horizons JANUARY 2020
Urabandai, the highland area of Mount Bandai, may just be one of Japan’s best kept secrets. Despite its high elevation and ideal snow conditions, Urabandai’s three ski resorts (Grandeco, Nekoma and Alts Bandai) remain uncrowded. In fact, weekday ski and snowboarders frequently feel as if they have the resort all to themselves. Beginners will appreciate the rookie-friendly runs at Grandeco while advanced riders can enjoy the long, winding black diamond trail. Nekoma offers high-quality powder, a park and mogul runs. Alts Bandai is the biggest of the three extending over multiple mountain ranges. Freestyle riders will stay entertained with the five terrain parks and there’s plenty of trails for the low-key riders. Wind down after a long day of carving at a cozy Japanese lodge. The western-style common area invites guests to gather with friends and take in the stunning views of the neighboring snowcovered lake.

Many people enter the gym and immediately feel their confidence deflate as doubt and self-criticism take over, but Samurai Fitness Center (SFC) is here to change perceptions — Yokota’s gym is a place of peace and empowerment for all. In fact, for Denea James, an SFC personal trainer and spin instructor, the gym was her saving grace. A few months after her first child was born, Denea began suffering from postpartum depression and low self-esteem. During one of the many nights spent consoling her 4-month-old, Denea started bawling right along with her. With tears streaming down her face, Denea realized it was time to do better for herself and her daughter. Her solution? A trip to the gym that quickly led to a complete lifestyle and career change. For Amy Negron — another Fitness Center trainer — her introduction wasn’t so instantaneous or provocative but rather a trickle of hints ushering her into the world of fitness. She had little experience working out, or with any sort of athletics, until she turned 20 and started tagging along with her mom during her trips to the gym. It took a few more years for Amy to find her calling in bodybuilding and personal training. Working out allows Denea to forget all of life’s stresses and focus on the present moment. For Amy, it just simply feels good to move and stay active. But living a healthy lifestyle does more than just feel or look good. Denea often notices mental transformations in her clients. “I live for that internal shift,” she says with a smile.
Interested in taking the first step with a personal trainer? Ready to try a fitness class? Or maybe you’re a certified trainer or instructor looking to share your passion? Call the Fitness Center or stop by their Front Desk for more information.
So you’ve decided to start on your fitness journey. Now what? It’s easier than it sounds. Make a goal and discover what works for you — work with a personal trainer, take fitness classes or tap into the plethora of online resources. The gym is yours to explore and the Samurai Fitness Center has everything you could possibly need:
Personal Trainers
Basketball Courts
Group Fitness Classes
Outdoor Track
Martial Arts Strength Training Inspired Classes
Cardio Equipment
Battle Rig Course
No matter your style, learn technique to establish a strong foundation. Amy has seen plenty of injuries during her 13 years of lifting (herself included) and, in her experience, it’s almost always caused by improper technique or from pushing too hard. She tells her clients, “I don’t care about how much weight you lift. I do care how you move.” If you’re not looking for a personal trainer and can’t find a knowledgeable gym buddy, Amy recommends doing research online.
“Trust the journey, respect the journey and enjoy the journey.” - Denea James
For most, the ultimate test comes during plateaus, setbacks or from sheer boredom. Results don’t happen instantaneously and that can be a hard pill to swallow. Denea reminds her clients, it took time to develop unhealthy habits and lifestyles so it’s going to take equal time to reverse those habits and embrace new ones. Be patient and trust the journey. Her fitness mantra: “Trust the journey, respect the journey and enjoy the journey.” For Amy, setbacks or plateaus actually make her more motivated as she explains, “I try to take the setbacks as a learning experience and then try to move forward from that.” She encourages anyone dealing with a setback to not let it get to their heads. “Half of it is mental, so try to reframe it or spin it and put more of a positive light into it.” Getting bored of the same old workout routine? Mix things up! Your fitness routine doesn’t have to be rigid and you’re never too old to try something new. And whenever you contemplate quitting, always remember why you started in the first place.

The Zenkoji Buddhist temple stands as the heart and soul of Nagano city’s origin and development. The 1,400-yearold temple was founded during the seventh century when Buddhism was first introduced to Japan. The clouds of incense smoke and prayers of countless pilgrims in the main hall attest to the importance of Zenkoji as a sanctuary of worship. Every February, the temple is lit up in colorful lights, while the main road leading to the temple is decorated with lanterns. Backlit with candles, the lanterns produce a warm and welcoming invitation. Notice the intricate “kiri-e,” or paper cut images, designed by local artists and students. Matsumoto Castle is one of five castles designated as a National Treasure of Japan and the oldest castle remaining in Japan. The 400-year-old castle and garden are kept in pristine condition. Walk across the koi-filled moat and through the wide brick gate to enter the beautiful castle grounds. Inside the castle are steep stairs and low ceilings leading past displays of armor and weapons from the Sengoku Period, or Warring States Period. The narrow wooden windows, once used by archers and gunmen, provide picturesque views of the Japanese Alps and Matsumoto city.

Advanced Preflight Advanced preflight is a program that helps you become more aware of all the safety-related data on an aircraft and focuses on a detailed approach to your preflight inspection based on the aircraft’s maintenance history. It is a valuable tool whether you own, rent or borrow an aircraft. Get to Know Your Aircraft Annual or 100-hour inspections require opening up the entire aircraft. It is highly recommended that you participate in or watch the mechanic perform one of these inspections. It’s a great way to learn about the aircraft’s systems, components and any areas prone to failure or weakness. It’s also important to know the aircraft’s maintenance history. Perform a records review including logbooks and records, maintenance manuals, ADs, manufacturer’s service letters, bulletins and any repair and alterations history. Ask your mechanic, a club or your local FAASTeam representative for help. You can also request a copy of the aircraft’s records at Aircraft.FAA.gov/e.gov/nd.
Common Issues to Look For Before your first flight after maintenance, ask what to watch for during the first flight. The mechanic will know what needs to be looked at right after an inspection or maintenance. Verify inspection covers are secured, and check for correct and unimpeded flight control surface deflections. Ask what was removed and/or disconnected to facilitate the work performed. Below is a list of potential equipment that may have been affected:

CLASS Spotlight Zumba
In Columbia during the 1990s, a fitness instructor forgot to bring his usual fitness music to class. In a last ditch effort, he grabbed some Latin music from his car and, rather than perform their usual athletic moves, had his students dance as if they were in a club. It was in that moment that Zumba was born. For those looking to burn weight, strengthen core and improve flexibility, Zumba is a match made in heaven. Zumba’s fast-pace, dynamic moves are sure to burn calories and build endurance. Lynn — the infectiously energetic and charismatic instructor — guides participants through each dance-inducing, catchy song. You don’t have to complete the choreography perfectly to reap the benefits, so those with two left feet can’t use their poor dancing skills as an excuse to not try. Even beginners who enter class with nerves or apprehension eventually find themselves dancing, shouting and high fiving with their fellow dancers. Leave class with your heart pumping, body sweating and face smiling.
