STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING & KAYAKING AT LAKE MOTOSU
10
HORIZONS JULY 2020
You don’t have to climb Mount Fuji to enjoy Japan’s most beloved volcano. Do something off the beaten track and enjoy the view of Mount Fuji while paddleboarding or kayaking on one of Mount Fuji’s five picturesque lakes. Just like the other four lakes, Lake Motosu was formed hundreds of years ago when lava flowed from Mount Fuji and hardened in the nearby rivers creating a dam. Paddle along the deep blue, clear waters for a relaxing experience in nature. PADDLING STYLE Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are both popular, but some prefer one style over the other, as they certainly have their differences. KAYAKING Kayaking was created by the Inuit Native Americans at least 4,000 years ago. Originally designed for hunting, kayaks evolved into a recreational activity in the mid-1800s. Kayaks are often considered to be more easygoing than paddleboarding since users are able to sit comfortably, and paddling is more efficient. Still, kayakers can expect an upper body workout especially if you paddle fast or get stuck in a current. You’re also less likely to fall into the water on a kayak than you are on a paddleboard. With that being said, falling into the water on a kayak takes a bit more maneuvering, as you’ll have to
exit the kayak while upside down in the water and then flip the kayak right side up before hoisting your body back into the seat. But don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds, and the ODR tour guide will teach you beforehand. Also, due to the kayak’s sturdiness and stability, even beginners are likely to stay dry the entire excursion.
STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP) Stand-up paddleboarding is relatively new especially when compared to the history of kayaking. Although forms of transportation similar to paddleboarding can be traced back to thousands of years ago, its current form originated in Hawaii in the 1900s and didn’t reach mainland U.S. until the 2000s. SUP riders feel as if they’re “standing” on water and the boards offer the freedom to do just about anything whether that be standing, sitting, head-standing or taking a cool dip in the water. You are more likely to take an accidental dip in the water than you are kayaking, as paddleboarding requires more balance on the rider’s part. Thankfully, it’s relatively easy to get back on the board. Nervous to stand up for the first time? Although the common SUP stance is standing, you can paddle the entire time while sitting. New to paddleboarding or kayaking? Before embarking on your paddling journey, ODR’s friendly tour guide will teach you the basics. Even the most experienced occasionally lose their balance and fall into the water, so competent swimming ability is required. Waterproof shoes, a swimsuit and change of clothes are also recommended as participants may get wet. Life vests will be provided and are required.

JAPAN’S TOP CITIES WORTH EXPLORING FOR MANY, A VACATION IS LONG OVERDUE. PLAN YOUR NEXT GETAWAY RIGHT HERE IN JAPAN BY TRAVELING TO ONE OF THESE THREE NOTEWORTHY JAPANESE CITIES.
KYOTO
KOBE
One of Japan’s most iconic cities, Kyoto in many ways symbolizes the quintessential traditional Japan with its numerous shrines and historical experiences.
Nestled in between the Rokko mountain range and Osaka Bay, Kobe is considered to be one of Japan’s most beautiful cities with plenty of things to do and see.
Zen Temple Kinkaku-ji The eminent zen temple is most famous for its brilliant gold leaf paint. As you walk along the temple grounds, notice the exquisite Japanese garden which has kept its original design through the years. Fushimi Inari This temple is best known for its “thousand torii gates.” Walk beneath the passageway of fiery red torii gates up to the mountain’s summit for picturesque views of the city. Gion District Travel back to the time of geishas. You’re not likely to see geishas here (pesky tourists have forced them into secrecy), but you can walk along the old architectural buildings and visit its many shops and restaurants. Philosopher’s Path This leisurely walking path gets its name from the Japanese philosopher Nishida Kitaro who was said to meditate along the peaceful walkway during his daily commute to Kyoto University. Follow the koi-filled canal for a pleasant stroll and rest your feet at one of the trendy boutiques, shops and restaurants.
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Walk across the longest suspension bridge in the world. The Maiko Marine Promenade, located directly beneath the bridge’s main streets, can be accessed via elevator and provides guests the opportunity to walk the bridge safely. Kobe Beef & Sake Try Kobe’s world-famous beef, or tour a sake brewery — another common delicacy in Kobe that can be found on almost every city block. Mount Rokko Hike or take a cable car up to Mount Rokko’s summit for panoramic views of Kyoto and Osaka. The view is especially breathtaking at night. You can even enjoy the view while dining at the Tenran Cafe. The mountain also offers an outdoor park, musical box museum, botanical garden, shops and restaurants all accessible by bus.
EAST CHINA SEA
KOBE
SAPPORO
SAPPORO
Located on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, Sapporo is best known for its annual Sapporo Snow Festival — a snowy event held every February that’s certainly worth a visit as the intricate and massive ice sculptures are a sight to see — but there’s plenty of other things to do, even in the not-so-wintry months. Odori Park Hokkaido’s most famous park is located in the heart of Sapporo city. Walk through the green oasis, enjoy a picnic, try some Hokkaido delicacies at one of the food stalls and get sweeping views of the city at the Sapporo TV Tower. Odori Park hosts the notorious Sapporo Snow Festival, but not many know that this hopping park hosts a big event for each season. Welcome the coming of warm weather and enjoy hundreds of blooming lilac trees during the park’s spring Lilac Festival; sip on local and international beer, and experience traditional Japanese dancing at the Sapporo Summer Festival; or dine on delicious, local cuisine at the Sapporo Autumn Festival.
SEA OF JAPAN
Sapporo Beer Museum One of Hokkaido’s biggest tourist attractions. Discover how Japan’s popular brewery came to be the first beer company in Japan. Sip on Sapporo Beer’s most interesting and popular flavors at the Star Hall, or try some of Hokkaido’s famously delicious mutton at one of their neighboring restaurants.

Cuisine & Onsens Try cuisine unique to Sapporo like their soup curry or locally-sourced seafood. Sapporo is also teeming with onsens. The perfect place to rest and relax after a long day of sightseeing.

Matsumoto Castle is a National Treasure of Japan and, at 400 years old, is the oldest castle remaining in Japan. As you walk up to the castle grounds, you can’t help but stare in awe at the massive donjon and mountain backdrop. Notice the elegant black roof that brought about the nickname “Crow Castle.” Walk across the koifilled moat and through the wide brick gate to enter the pristinely kept garden. Once inside the castle, walk along the castle’s wooden floors and narrow staircases to view old artifacts from the Sengoku Period, and learn about traditional Japanese-castle architecture. Peer through the narrow windows once used by archers and gunmen for an aerial view of Matsumoto city.
exhibition and the impressively painstaking process of creating ukiyo-e. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop before you leave. Conveniently located behind the art museum is the Matsumoto Open Air Architectural Museum — a collection of government buildings from the Edo Period and late Showa Period. The buildings include a Nagano District Court building, the Showa Kogyo silk factory and Matsumoto’s old juvenile correctional facility. The museum’s quaint courtyard is beautiful and peaceful with a stream running past the facility’s gates.
Ukiyo-e Art Museum houses the private collection of the Sakai family’s ukiyo-e prints. Ukiyo-e, or woodblock print, is a genre of art established in Japan and is still heavily associated with Japanese culture. In fact, the world-famous Japanese artwork “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” is a ukiyo-e painting. With more than 100,000 prints, the Ukiyo-e Art Museum is believed to be the largest collection of its kind and includes representative masterpieces of all known ukiyo-e artists. WINGS PILOT PROFICIENCY PROGRAM The objective of the WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program is to address the primary accident causal factors that continue to plague the general aviation community and to suggest mitigation strategies to help avoid accidents. The WINGS program is based on the premise that pilots who maintain currency and proficiency in the basics of flight will enjoy a safer and more stress-free flying experience. Requirements for each aircraft category and class include specific subjects and flight maneuvers. The WINGS program consists of learning activities and flight tasks selected to address the documented causal factors of aircraft accidents. Pilots can select the category and class of aircraft they wish to receive training in and demonstrate their flight proficiency. To ensure a wellrounded learning experience, only certain activities fulfill specific credit requirements. All pilots holding a U.S. pilot certificate can participate in the WINGS program. To participate, pilots should contact certified flight instructors and schools who participate in the program. Student pilots are also encouraged to participate in the WINGS program. Student pilots will receive Phase 1 at the Basic Level certification upon satisfactory completion of their private pilot practical test and completion of an online course on aeronautical decision making. Please note that student pilots will initially register on FAASafety.gov as a non-airman.

CLASS SPOTLIGHT POWER YOGA
Walk into Alexis Miller’s Power Yoga class at the Natatorium and you’re likely to see all types of people from all walks of life sitting on yoga mats, talking with friends and prepping their designated yoga space. Alexis knows most of her students, and when she sees a new face, she’s quick to introduce herself and offer a warm welcome. Alexis greets me as I walk in; I’m one of her regulars. Since my introduction to yoga when I was 20, yoga studios became a sort of spiritual and physical retreat for me. In the States, I attended yoga classes at least twice a week — some weeks almost every day — and I quickly noticed the benefits as my mental health, cardiovascular health, muscle strength and flexibility increased. Upon moving to Japan, I searched high and low for yoga studios off base. I’d walk into random studios with my broken and limited Japanese asking if there were any yoga teachers that spoke English, and I even commuted an hour just to attend an English-friendly yoga studio, only to find the perfect yoga class was just a five-minutes’ walk from my home on base. Alexis’s Power Yoga class certainly isn’t easy, and I revel in the challenge, but it’s doable for people of all athletic and flexibility levels, and students are welcome to rest in child’s pose (a common resting position in yoga) at any point during the session. Class starts with gentle movements to wake up the body and gradually transitions into more active poses. The most difficult sequence is then repeated multiple times gaining speed with each repetition. Throughout the class, Alexis’s clear yet harmonious voice guides students through each yoga pose while calming even the most frazzled of minds. Once each and every student is feeling the burn, class winds down with some gentle stretches and savasana (another resting pose in which students simply lay on their mats and relax). Leave class feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
