NIKKO TOSHOGU SHRINE & OYA ROCK QUARRY
Nestled in the forests of the Tochigi Prefecture, this magnificent landmark memorializes Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate who ruled Japan for over 250 years. It’s unlike any other shrine in Japan.
Lavishly decorated with gold leaf and elaborate wood carvings, the Nikko Toshogu Shrine boasts over a dozen buildings. While exploring the grounds, you’ll notice a few quirky carvings—a sleeping cat, clawed elephants, and the famous three monkeys posed in such a way to express the proverbial principle: see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
After, the tour will continue to the Oya Quarry. During the Edo Period, man-made caverns were used to harvest the much sought-after Oya, a soft, yet durable volcanic stone. You can learn more at the museum and explore the vast network of underground hallways.

They Ate and Left No Crumbs
Undeniable Excellence at the Samurai Dining Café
For the unfamiliar, the expression “ate and left no crumbs” is slang for an action that has been executed perfectly. Having recently won the John L. Hennessy Trophy Award for a record-breaking fourth consecutive year, it is more than fair to associate the colloquialism with the Samurai Dining Café.
To win a John L. Hennessy Trophy Award, facilities must meet and exceed a set of stringent criteria. Beyond outstanding food and cleanliness, facilities must exhibit sustained excellence in areas such as food service management, force readiness support, food quality, employee and customer relations, resource conservation, training, and safety, as outlined by the Hennessy Travelers Association.
A visit to the facility evidences why they have been chosen year after year. The swinging kitchen doors reveal spotless stainless steel surfaces without the characteristic coldness, workers are quick to offer smiles and waves, and the dining room looks and feels upscale compared to standard cafeteria dining arrangements. Of course, it’s not the appliances or the type of seating offered, but rather the people who make all of it possible.
When asked to nominate someone for the FSS Spotlight, TSgt Clay, the NCOIC of the Samurai Dining Café, didn’t hesitate in naming A1C Masion Gaskins.
“A1C Gaskins is a hardcharging Airman who is dedicated to doing his best for Team Yokota’s Mission. He is an excellent teammate who always wants to do more,” says TSgt Clay.
Originally from South Fulton Tennessee, Gaskins arrived in Japan in January 2023. He takes an immense amount of pride in his work and is passionate about making good food. His favorite recipe to make, however, is a classic: mac n’ cheese.
Gaskins was also nominated for the Hennessy Traveler Association award to receive an allexpenses-paid culinary training at the Culinary Institute of America in San Antonio. Outside of the kitchen, you’ll likely find him in the gym or fishing.
