READ TO ME (AGES 5 & UNDER)

BADGER’S PERFECT GARDEN

LINUS THE VEGETARIAN T. REX

By Marsha Diane Arnold Illustrated by Ramona Kaulitzki

By Robert Neubecker

The hard-working, dedicated Badger excitedly completes the laborious process of planting the seeds he’s been collecting all year. But when a storm passes through and scatters his perfectly planted seeds, Badger must learn an important life lesson: things don’t always go as planned, but what actually happens may be better than what we could have ever expected.

LIBRARIAN ON THE ROOF! By M.G. King Illustrated by Stephen Gilpin

A biography on RoseAleta Laurell — an animated librarian so determined to improve her town’s library she’s willing to spend seven days on the library’s roof. Through RoseAleta’s compelling story, children learn that it takes dedication, determination and passion to make a difference.

Ruth Ann Mackenzie is a regular visitor of the Museum of Natural History and knows everything there is to know about dinosaurs, so when the new dinosaur exhibit opened, she didn’t expect to be surprised — that is, until she meets Linus the vegetarian T. rex. A fictional story inspired by the real falcarius dinosaurs whose ancestors evolved from carnivores to herbivores.

YOUTH (AGES 6–12)

BEHIND THE LEGEND: BIGFOOT

YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO BE A VIKING EXPLORER!

By Erin Peabody Illustrated by Victor Rivas

Behind the Legend: Bigfoot artfully bolsters readers’ imagination while simultaneously encouraging them to use factual evidence and multiple sources before drawing their own conclusions. With mythical stories, videos, photos, eyewitness accounts and expert opinions, this book offers plenty of resources for children to make their own opinions on the elusive bigfoot.

GROW YOUR OWN MONSTERS By Nicola Davies & Simon Hickmott Illustrated by Scoular Anderson

Learn how to grow and care for your own “monster” plants like the meat-eating venus fly trap, 20-foot-tall giant echium and dead-smelling voodoo lily. With interesting facts and easyto-read instructions, this book encourages readers to get outdoors and plant.

By Andrew Langley Illustrated by David Antram

Become a Viking and travel from your homeland in Greenland to the new frontier of Newfoundland Canada. With creative artwork and an immersive story line, this book hooks readers while teaching them a thing or two about the sometimes barbaric, yet highly consequential, Vikings.

TEENS (AGES 13–17)

GIRLS WHO CODE

THE IMITATION GAME

By Reshma Saujani

By Jim Ottaviani Illustrated by Leland Purvis

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for computing careers is $86,320, and the job rate is growing. Yet, according to Quartz.com, women hold less than 25% of America’s computer science jobs. Girls Who Code is looking to change that with easy-to-understand coding explanations and inspiring stories of women who have broken the glass ceiling and made a name for themselves in coding.

SHACKLETON By Nick Bertozzi

Ride the ups and downs of Ernest Shackleton and his team’s perilous journey to the South Pole — an expedition that, at the time, had only been conquered once before. The comic book’s sense of adventure and creative drawings are sure to entertain, and Shackleton’s story is certainly one to inspire.

Told through the point of view of Alan Turing and his closest family members and acquaintances, Ottaviani’s comic adds color to Turing’s significant yet undervalued and tragic life. Follow the highs and lows of the eccentric and brilliant Alan Turing as he navigates primary school, deciphers messages during World War II and creates the revolutionary Turing machine and Imitation Game.

ADULTS (AGES 18 & UP)

RISE OF THE ROCKET GIRLS

TOKYO MAZE

By Nathalia Holt

Written by a native German who has lived in Tokyo for over five years, Tokyo Maze offers advice only an experienced gaijin could give. The first 33 chapters provide travelers with attractions, sites and eateries within walking distance of each notable station in Tokyo. The last nine chapters explore areas near Tokyo like Kawagoe, Nikko and Kamakura.

Nathalia Holt masterfully showcases the unsung women who made massive advancements in the science of space during the mid1900s. A brilliantly written biography that recognizes the women whose small steps made giant leaps for womankind.

Volunteer Spotlight Tammy Jenkins likes to keep busy and is an eager volunteer (in the States, she often worked 18 hours a day while still finding time to help out at a local animal sanctuary and hospice care), so when she heard the Post Office needed volunteers last December, she jumped on the opportunity to help. She’s been volunteering at the Post Office ever since, often working eight-

hour shifts three times a week. Tammy says what keeps her coming back is knowing that she’s helping someone get their mail sooner. She’s also learned a lot and is now a bit of an expert on the postal process. Although Tammy spends many hours at the Yokota Post Office, she emphasizes that staff are appreciative of any help they can get, and they’re flexible too. Simply stop by when you have the time and work for however long you can. Tammy encourages anyone interested in lending a hand to give it a try. It’s so much more than just putting mail in boxes.

FLIGHT SAFETY MEETING Sat • 6 Jun • 9 a.m. Kobayashi Room, Enlisted Club Join us for a local general aviation flight safety discussion group. Attendence is required for all pilots.

AERO CLUB & FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER

PURPOSE OF GO-AROUNDS A go-around is a maneuver pilots perform when landing conditions are not ideal. Due to less than ideal conditions on their final approach, pilots will choose to abort the landing and “go around” the pattern to make another attempt. Here are six reasons for why a pilot might complete a go-around. This is by no means an all-encompassing list as there are a broad range of reasons for why a pilot might decide to perform a go-around. 1. RUNWAY INCURSION One of the most common reasons for a go-around is when there’s something on or close to the runway that may pose a threat such as another aircraft, airport vehicle or animal. 2. TRAFFIC CONFLICT A traffic conflict might occur because another nearby aircraft makes an unexpected course change, or a controller might direct a pilot to go around due to heavy traffic. Since a controller’s primary responsibility is to ensure separation from other aircraft, a pilot may need to perform a go-around. 3. UNSTABLE APPROACH In order to land safely, pilots need to make sure the aircraft is on a stable approach. If the plane is moving too fast, too slow, too high, too low or not properly aligned with the runway, the plane experiences an unstable approach. If the approach is not stabilized within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold, a go-around is necessary.

5. BOUNCED LANDING A bounced landing usually results from trying to land with an unstable approach. The pilot may try and land just a little too fast or too quickly. However, it only takes a little bit for the airplane to refuse to land. If the plane bounces more than once, it’s time to hit the throttle and try again. Multiple bounces can compound the instability of the plane and exacerbate the situation. 6. IT JUST DOESN’T FEEL RIGHT There may not be any specific issue or problem — at least not one the pilot can readily identify. Something just “feels off.” https://www.aviatortips.com/why-do-pilots-do-a-go-around/

LIFE & LEISURE

4. CROSSWINDS & DOWNDRAFTS Planes must maintain proper airspeed, altitude and rate of descent. If a crosswind rolls the airplane too close to landing, the pilot will often perform a go-around. While this is similar to an unstable approach, it’s different in that the approach was stable until there was a sudden change at the last second.

VEHICLE OPERATIONS 225-7720 • Bldg. 1290

Plan Ahead for Stress-Free Summer Travel

Summer PCS and vacation season is fast approaching. Here are some Vehicle Operations’ rules and regulations worth noting before your shuttle trip so that you can travel to the airport stress free. The baggage policy for the airport shuttles allows for two pieces of stowed luggage plus one carry-on. Excessive and/or oversized baggage larger than 62 inches is only permitted on a space-available basis. Cost is $10 per extra bag, and room for your extra bag is not guaranteed. Vehicle Operations’ shuttle service to Haneda and Narita airports is available to customers traveling without pets. Customers traveling with pets are not permitted on the shuttle bus. Call in advance to reserve chauffeured transportation for your family, luggage and pet(s) to Haneda or Narita. Prices start as low as $36 per hour (minimums apply). Reserve in advance as the chauffeured service books quickly.

LIFE & LEISURE

If you have non-DoD ID card holding family members visiting and would like to have them ride the shuttle bus unaccompanied, please visit Vehicle Operations’ Front Desk to fill out a Certificate of Sponsorship form, or call for more information. Even with a Certification of Sponsorship form, you will still need to pick up your visitors from Yokota Air Base’s Front Gate.

CLASS SPOTLIGHT U-JAM

Getting fit doesn’t have to be boring as proven by U-Jam — an urban dance workout that resembles a hip-hop dance party more than a gym workout. Similar to the popular Zumba, U-Jam relies on moves derived from dance and aerobics. Dance to fast-paced, hit songs from a variety of music genres including hip-hop, pop and samba. Although U-Jam certainly appeals to dancers and Zumba lovers, dance and workout experience is not necessary for this class as the always-smiling instructor, Lynn Gomez, leads participants through each move. Her contagious, charismatic and lively energy spreads to her students as they shout and laugh along with her. Even beginners can’t help but smile by the end of class. Classes start with simple moves to warm up the body before transitioning into more dynamic dance moves that are sure to make you sweat. End class with a cool-down track to stretch out those tired muscles. For the class schedule and price, see page 21.
