On average, the Yokota Post Office receives 12,000 pounds and ships 2,000 pounds of mail every day, but not many Yokota residents know what it takes for these precious parcels to travel around the world. The postal journey is far and tenuous but organized and efficient thanks to the United States Postal Service (USPS) and Yokota Post Office.

1

Mail is routed to Chicago or San Francisco. Mail leaves the States via plane and arrives at Narita Airport.

2

Employees of Yokota’s Air Mail Terminal (AMT) take the two-hour drive to Narita three times a day to transport mail to Yokota Air Base. Twice a day, AMT drops off mail at the Yokota Post Office.

3

Mail is sorted by Post Office employees. Packages are placed on shelves by weight — lighter packages on higher shelves and heavier packages on bottom shelves. Letters, magazines, postcards and smaller packages are numerically sorted in small cubbies.

4 Parcels are scanned and

an automatic email notification is immediately sent to the receiver.

1

AMT picks up mail from the Yokota Post Office twice a day and transports them to Narita Airport.

2 Depending on the adressee’s zip

code, mail is sent through Chicago, New York, San Francisco or Hawaii. Everything is shipped to the U.S. first, even if being shipped to another country (including Japan).

Out processing or sponsoring a new Yokota resident? Don’t forget to stop by the Yokota Post Office’s Customer Service Office with a copy of the orders.

Wait until you leave the Post Office to open your mail. For safety and security reasons, customers are not permitted to open their packages in the Post Office building.

Packages that are too big must be shipped outside of a bag and are more prone to being damaged by weather and other various factors. However, the Yokota Post Office staff tries their best to rewrap and reseal any damaged packages. United States Governement

ENHANCED VISION SYSTEMS The General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC) believes Enhanced Vision (EV) and Synthetic Vision (SV) technology can significantly improve general aviation utility and reduce the chance of accidents during night and Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) operations. SYNTHETIC VISION Unlike EV, SV does not use sensors to “see” outside. Instead, SV relies on GPS information and a database to create a virtual representation of the outside world that you, as the pilot, would see. Using information from navigation databases, SV creates a picture of the flight environment and overlays that picture with aircraft instrumentation and weather information to create a single image that contains all of the information necessary for safe flight operations. One key advantage is that SV can be “installed” in many aircraft with minimal expense or effort. ENHANCED VISION EV systems use sensors to provide a better view of the outside world. These aircraft-based sensors use near-infrared cameras or milimeter-wave radar to provide vision in limited visibility environments. EV systems can identify terrain in weather and detect wildlife or other obstructions on the runway.

EV does however take some getting used to. You’ll have to make the transition to visual reference at some point, and that can be a challenge — especially if you’re not viewing the world through a Head Up Display. KOLTOn MunGer Youth Sports Soccer Coach

KIDS' KORNER

Kolton Munger started coaching while stationed in Korea three years ago. “It’s something to get my mind off the grind of work … something to look forward to,” he explained. There’s a lot he enjoys about coaching, but his main motivation is to serve others and support the Yokota community. In his mind, there’s nothing like making a difference in the lives of our future generation. Interested in impacting the youth of Yokota? Youth Center is always in need of coaches for a full spectrum of sports. Visit the Youth Center or call 225-7441 to find out more about the many coaching needs you can help fill.

CLASS SpoTLighT hAkkoryu goShin

During a hakkoryu goshin class session, instructor Joseph Miller attempted to persuade an observer to step on the mat and try a defensive move, but she was hesitant. She had merely planned on watching the class and by no means expected to participate. She insisted she couldn’t due to her arthritic hands but, with a bit more coaxing, Sensei Miller convinced her to try. Miller’s assistant grabbed her by the wrist and instructed her how to release his grip. All it took was a simple yank of her forearm straight up towards her ear, and she was free. She whooped and hollered at her success and exclaimed, “You can’t blame it on arthritis!” Hakkoryu goshin provides people of all ages, weight and gender the self-assurance they need in a worst-case scenario. Joseph Miller describes hakkoryu goshin as a “science of the body” since the practice relies on human anatomy to create practical and safe selfdefense moves. “No challenge, no resistance and no injury” is a common and fitting saying within hakkoryu goshin as its reliance on pressure points works to prevent, not injure, an attacker. Hakkoryu’s Japanese roots are apparent at the beginning of class as practitioners clap, bow and chant “onegaishimasu.” Students then move on to stretching before learning and practicing selfdefense moves. Teachers are hands-on and often act as an attacker to better simulate what students should do in any given situation. Unlike Brazilian jiu jitsu where participants spend most of their time grappling on the ground, hakkoryu goshin’s moves take place while either standing or kneeling. Students can rest assured they are in good hands at the Samurai Fitness Center’s Hakkoryu Goshin class as Joseph Miller has many years of experience under his belt. He started martial arts at the age of 6 and was invited to study with hakkoryu grand master and founder Soke Yoshiji Okuyama in 1968. He has since spread his martial arts expertise to people of all backgrounds including children, women and service members. Interested in learning self defense? See page 33 for the Hakkoryu Goshin class schedule.
