Admire the vibrant and colorful fall leaves as you hike one of Japan’s most famous mountains. Mount Takao, Mount Fuji and Mount Hako are considered Japan’s three holy mountains and spiritualists believe them to be the source of life. With its well-maintained trails and practical trail distances, Mount Takao offers a more leisurely alternative to hiking Mount Fuji and is a great option for beginners and families. Upon reaching the summit, visit the observation deck for an expansive view of the nearby mountain range and cities. A monkey park and Buddhist shrine are also open to visitors near the top of the mountain. Stop by the local shops for trinkets and snacks.

Tama Hills was originally established as Tama Arsenal — a plant built for the production of explosive chemicals. Built in the late 1930s, Tama Arsenal was operated by the Japanese Imperial Army until the end of World War II. The land was ceded to the U.S. Army in 1945 and used as an arsenal facility during the Korean War. Hike through Tama in a hunt to find hints of its rich history.
1931 Japan starts expanding into East Asia.
1938
1940
Tama Arsenal was built for the production of explosive chemicals.
Japan enters WWII.
1955 The Air Force discontinues its munitions plant and relinquishes the land to the 6100th Chaplains’ Office. The land is used as a religious retreat center and Boy Scouts camp.
1967 Sep, Tama Arsenal is renamed Tama Service Annex.
1945 World War II ends. 1 Nov, the U.S. Army takes control of Tama.
1971 The 475th Air Base Wing acquires Tama. Civil engineers and volunteers renovate many of the facilities.
1947 18 Sep, the U.S. Air Force is created. 28 Oct, the U.S. Army relinquishes Tama to the U.S. Air Force.
1980–1982 Tama undergoes periodic, major renovations.
1952 20,000 tons of aerial bombs are stored at Tama in support of the Korean War.
Present Day Tama Hills operated by the 374th Force Support Squadron as a recreational retreat.
1. SACRED SHRINE It’s not uncommon for Japanese factories to designate a deity as a symbol of good luck and safety. Tama Arsenal was no exception — its shrine was dedicated to the spirit of fire protection. Although the shrine was demolished after World War II, there are still hints of what once stood. What is now the entrance to the Archery Field was once the shrine entrance. Notice the small ponds on both sides — a common characteristic of Japanese shrines. Walk onto the field, look to the hill on your right and imagine where the stairs — now covered in shrubbery and grass — once led to the shrine. To the left is the start of a long trail that winds past a few other military ruins.
2. STAIRS THAT LEAD NOWHERE Take the trail from the Archery Field and make a right turn towards Campsite G. When you reach the road outside Campsite G, look to your left. These timeworn stairs once led to an office building. The nearby tunnel and road were also built during World War II. Much of the historic roads are still useable. Determine the new versus old from their consistency and appearance: the older roads are made of concrete with gravel and retaining walls on both sides, while the asphalt is used for repair and maintenance by the U.S.
3. WWII ELEVATORS Partially hidden in overgrown underbrush is a massive elevator shaft that looks like something out of an Indiana Jones movie. In reality, these elevators were used to transport explosive materials as it was too dangerous to move the materials via road. Workers were required to walk up the long, steep stairs adjacent to the elevator. There are three elevators in total — one located in plain sight of the main road. The other two are more difficult to find as they are shrouded in shrubbery near the Tama trails. Can you discover all three?
HIKE THROUGH HUNT TO FIND H RICH HIS
4. BURLY BUNKERS Arguably one of the easiest relics to find due to their size and abundance (there are 14 in total), the bunkers were used to store munitions. To avert potential explosions, the bunkers were made of one-foot-thick concrete walls. Even the window panes, shutters and doors were deliberately made of heavy steel. Although most of the bunkers stand in plain sight, some are almost impossible to find — one is completely covered due to a recent landslide.

5. OLD ROADS Walk up this road to find still-functioning examples of the old road structure. Large stones were collected from Tama River and combined with concrete to build a retaining wall. To this day, the wall prevents vegetation from creeping onto the roadway. The drains alongside the road carried rain water and hindered potential landslides. They also served as a hiding spot for workers who took cover in the ditches during air raids.
6. FOREST FOX HOLES Located within the Tama forest are man-made holes used as effective hiding spots by Tama Arsenal employees and materials during air raids. The Japanese Imperial Army relied on the surrounding nature to keep Tama Arsenal hidden in plain sight.
7. THE POWDER PLANT The Tama Powder Plant produced munitions for the Japanese Imperial Army including picric — a highly-explosive substance used in the production of bombs and grenades. On 8 June, 1945 a massive picric explosion demolished the Tama Powder Plant and took the lives of five Japanese workers. The cause of the explosion is unknown, but historians speculate the material’s temperature became too hot for the highly-sensitive picric acid. The only surviving proof of what once stood is a concrete wall. Peer close to see dents on the wall caused by the explosion. Some believe the neighboring Shogun Cabin is haunted. A few lodgers have reported lights turning on and off and belongings moving at night.
8. BOILER PLANT It was too dangerous to use fire around the susceptible powder and munitions, so the Japanese Imperial Army had to develop a way to heat the hot water at the bottom of the hill and carry it to various areas all around the facility. During your trail excursion, be on the lookout for pipes peeking out of the ground. These were once used to transport the hot water.
Special thanks to Yoshitaka Yamaguchi and Jeff Heagerty for taking the time to meet with FSS Marketing to share their expertise on Tama Hills’ history.

UDON SUMMIT 2019 S a t • 16 N ov Cultural Connection
Indulge your taste buds at Japan’s ninth annual Udon Summit — a massive festival that brings over 100,000 attendees each year. Held in the impressive Kumagaya Sports Cultural Park (the same stadium where the 2019 Rugby World Cup was recently held), this event offers visitors the chance to slurp Japan’s finest udon. World-renowned chefs from the northern island of Hokkaido to the southwest tip of Japan in Kyushu offer their region’s unique udon creations to hungry guests. At the end of this two-day event, the best tasting udon takes home the national title.
What is Udon? Udon is a noodle made of wheat. Brought to Japan from China, this dish can be found in many Japanese restaurants and homes. Thicker than soba and ramen, udon can be served cold or hot; in a broth or on its own. Toppings vary depending on the region but common pairings are green onions, seaweed or chili peppers.
November tour sign-up starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 5 October. 227-7083 • Bldg. 327 Cost: $35 Includes: Udon making experience

THE AVIATION MAINTENANCE TECHNICIANS’ MODEL CODE OF CONDUCT The Code of Conduct offers recommendations to advance aviation maintenance technicians’ (AMT) professionalism and has benefited from extensive input and review by the aviation maintenance community. The Code of Conduct should enhance safety in the maintenance workplace and in-flight operations; promote improved training, appropriate conduct and personal responsibility; encourage the development of good judgment and ethical behavior; and contribute to the aviation community and society at large. It also supports improved communications between AMTs, aircraft owners, pilots, regulators and others in the aviation industry and seeks to make aviation maintenance a respected and rewarding profession. The Code of Conduct presents a vision of excellence in aviation maintenance within its seven sections:
• General Responsibilities of Aviation Maintenance Technicians • Third-Party Safety • Training and Proficiency • Security • Environmental Issues • Use of Technology • Advancement and Promotion of Aviation Maintenance. The Code of Conduct is a living document periodically updated to reflect changes in standards, practice and the aviation environment. The Aviation Maintenance Technicians’ Model Code of Conduct is the latest in a family of similar codes. They have also been written for glider aviators, light sport aviators, seaplane pilots and student pilots. Visit SecureAV.com for the free code of conducts and supporting materials.

CLASS Spotlight Youth Programs Cheerleading
impressive Young Cheerleaders cartwheel, handspring and backflip through the air and across the gym floor. On the day we visited, the students worked on their assigned exercises — one group practiced backbends while others worked to improve their cartwheels, backflips or handstands. Coach Jaclyn shuffled between the groups offering suggestions and hands-on assistance. Jaclyn pushes her students to grow and improve while remaining aware of each individual’s current skill level. Jaclyn works hard to create an atmosphere of comradery by recognizing each student’s personal achievements. At the end of class, she took the time to acknowledge two students who both accomplished their first backbend. The cheerleaders showed off their new skills as the other students clapped in support. If your child loves to tumble around the house, or maybe you want them to learn dedication and team work, consider signing them up for Youth Programs’ cheer classes. Jaclyn’s Cheer Tumbling class focuses on acrobatic skills whereas Youth Elite focuses on cheer jumps, such as toe touches and herkies, and routines. For more information, see page 34 or call 225-7441.
