Tens of thousands flock to Yokota Air Base’s flight line each year for the Friendship Festival — Yokota’s most anticipated open-base event. The atmosphere is one of high spirits and comradery as visiting Japanese practice their English, take pictures with service members and gawk at the military dogs walking alongside their handlers. Meet our neighbors and see just how hard the Yokota community works to support the mission.
MILITARY DEMONSTRATIONS Catch a glimpse of the U.S. Air Force and Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) missions. Get up close and personal with a variety of military planes. Heavies, including the C-130J, UH-1N, C-12J, P-8A Poseidon and C-17 are common sightings at the Friendship Festival. The CH-53 helicopter, CV-22 Osprey and A-10 Thunderbolt Jet were added to the flight displays in 2017 and 2018. For something a little different, hop in a firetruck and try on a firefighter’s suit. Enjoy Security Force’s K-9 demonstration and a JASDF drill performance. Keep your eyes on the skies to see an air display team perform a fly-over, parachutists jump out of planes and Osprey pilots execute flight demonstrations. Witness rescue demonstrations as trained servicemen put their skills to the test with victim transport and emergency evacuation drills.
CONCESSION STANDS Booths run by on-base facilities and organizations — like the American Red Cross, AAFES and Yokota Clubs — encircle the military planes and sell merchandise and food. Get a taste of home with American fare like hamburgers, fries and hot dogs; or try local Japanese street food like yakitori and yakisoba. SHOWS & GAMES Watch a variety of shows held throughout the weekend in Hangar 15. Traditional Japanese Bon dancers, Daiko drummers and the PACAF band have all made appearances at past Friendship Festivals. Or, walk over to the Strongman Competition to marvel at the competitors’ herculean strength as they complete the farmer’s walk, overhead log press, tire flip and more. Keep kids entertained with bounce castles and test your skills in a game of cornhole. The event concludes with a fantastic fireworks display. Don’t miss this esteemed event as we celebrate and foster our relationship with our Japanese neighbors and friends.

Stroll through a scenic forest to reach Jigokudani Yaen-koen — a park that offers guests the chance to observe wild Japanese macaques, fondly known as snow monkeys, in their natural habitat. Jigokudani Yaen-koen may be known for its onsen-bathing snow monkeys in the winter but is also worth a visit in the summer. The monkeys can often be seen resting in the broad-leaved vegetation and eating plants and insects. The rambunctious youngsters are wildly entertaining as they chase and play with family members. worn out, the babies cling to their mother’s belly for a quick nap. You’ll want to take photos of these delightful macaques, but don’t get too distracted — the mischievous monkeys are known to steal items from unsuspecting guests. Afterwards, satiate your hunger with a trip to Shinshu Fruitsland. Pick fresh grapes straight off the vine for 30 minutes of all-you-can-eat grapes. Stop by their store to shop for fresh fruits, treats and souvenirs. Leave with a free cluster of grapes.

HOW SAFE IS IT?
When someone considers learning to fly, the question of safety inevitably comes up. How safe is flying in a light airplane? Just like driving a car or boat, the risks involved with flying depend on the circumstances, the risk tolerance of the individual and their willingness to keep learning.
AERO CLUB/FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER (FTC) 225-8988 • Bldg. 4304
FLIGHT SAFETY MEETING Sat • 7 Sep • 9 a.m. Kobayashi Room, Enlisted Club Join us for a local general aviation flight safety discussion group. Attendance is required for all pilots.
Compared to automobiles, general aviation — defined as all kinds of flying except for the airlines and military — has about one-sixth as many accidents on a per-vehicle-mile basis, and the accident rate is stable. Training for a pilot certificate is much more rigorous than it is for a driver’s license. Mandatory ground and flight training, along with written and practical tests, help to ensure that pilots have achieved a basic level of proficiency, and periodic, recurrent training helps to maintain and improve flight skills. The environment in which aircraft operate is much more closely regulated as well. The regulations have evolved over the years to address accident prevention, and most pilots prefer to use regulations as a minimum guideline to exceed in their own flight operations. Perfect safety is unknown in transportation and probably in most of life’s endeavors. By almost any measure, commercial air travel is probably the safest mode of transportation. This is because of the tremendous emphasis that is placed on the reliability of aircraft, air crews and the air-traffic control system in which they operate.

INSTRUCTOR Spotlight Taiyo Piano Instructor
Mie Fujimori
Mie Fujimori watched in admiration as her student, Kaylee Hubbard, played complicated, beautiful songs from Beauty and the Beast, My Neighbor Totoro and The Greatest Showman. At age 13, Kaylee is arguably a piano-playing prodigy. An observer would assume she’s been playing since the age of three; in reality, she started learning just two and a half years ago. Time and time again, she defied Fujimori’s expectations often mastering difficult and complex songs written for pianist experts. Kaylee even learned a beautiful rendition of The Greatest Showman song, “This is Me,” by ear. She practices for at least an hour every day — usually in the mornings until her parents urge her to get ready for school. Because of pianist protégés like Kaylee, Fujimori now encourages students to request songs. One of her pianists loves gaming, so he played a song from a popular video game. She tells her students, “Maybe I say no, but you tell me first.” Besides, “music is music,” she argues, no matter what the genre. Mie Fujimori is a talented musician in her own right having played for almost 50 years. She whole-heartedly believes piano runs in her blood as her father was a devoted musician who, after World War II, spent the little money he had on a piano. He instilled his love for music in Fujimori who went on to attend art schools in high school and college. She started teaching piano when she was a teenager and has been an instructor at Yokota Air Base for over 25 years. Mie Fujimori often advises her students, “No chocolate, no sleep, no games.” Her advice may sound silly at face value, but her aspiring pianists understand the underlying meaning: talent takes practice and persistence. Mie Fujimori and Kaylee Hubbard are living examples of that. See page 35 for more information on Fujimori’s classes.
