Be part of the York Learning Community Introduction

Even though the last year has been extraordinary, you have continued to join us and celebrate learning in all its different forms. Our courses have brought you high quality learning experiences with highly skilled, qualified and supportive tutors (Ofsted 2019). We are continuing to roll out our range of courses which are online or in the classroom. If the need arises we can move all learning online. Angie Padfield Head of Service York Learning, Adult and Community Education Service There is so much that’s important about adult education that takes us beyond employment prospects. The benefits of learning to play a musical instrument have been huge for me: improving concentration and memory, using a different part of my brain, and the increased relaxation and reduced stress has had such a brilliant effect on my mental health during this pandemic, that it has been immeasurable. If everyone could do something like this, I’m sure it would have an impact on our mental health services in the NHS! L, Guitar Level 1

I enrolled on the GCSE Maths course last September with more than a little trepidation! My fears were soon eased by a very gentle introduction to what was to become a hugely rewarding experience. Being used to the traditional ‘chalk and talk’ method of teaching, a whole new, digital, world opened up to me. Google Classroom became the norm and inches, pints and ounces were replaced by centimetres, litres and grams! Helen is a fantastic teacher, with a clever knack of pitching the work to suit all learners. When the going gets tough she offers support and guidance in abundance. The lessons are broken down into manageable chunks and Helen works hard to ensure that her students are given ample opportunity to understand and embed their learning.

I came to York Learning to gain some IT skills but had incredibly low confidence working on a computer. I started with a computer basics course as I was very nervous about doing anything that involved exams. My tutor quickly realised that I was able to pick up the necessary skills and would be suitable for doing an ECDL qualification. All that stood in my way was confidence. My tutor worked with me to build my confidence and my ability increased. I was delighted to pass my first exam, mastering my fear of exams, and I am now speedily working towards my second qualification.
