Box 2674 El Segundo, CA 90245 Young Life is a charter member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) and has maintained that membership through a yearly review of its compliance with the ECFA’s standards.

Young Life was incorporated in 1941 by Jim Rayburn, a seminary student and part-time youth minister in Gainesville, Texas, who wanted to reach out to kids disinterested in church. Rayburn went where kids were and found creative ways to share the love of God with them. His methods continue to transform lives today. Annah Cameron

ANNAH CAMERON

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.’” — Revelation 21:3, NIV

AREA OVERVIEW Young Life L.A. Airport is made up of the El Segundo and Hawthorne communities. In the geographic area, there are six middle schools, four high schools and three colleges with 5,635 high =students, 5,700 middle school students and 19,028 college students that make up LAX Young Life.

ANNAH’S STORY

I didn’t grow up in a family that believed in the gospel, and they certainly didn’t live in a way that resembled it. When I started going to Young Life club my sophomore year of high school I knew it was a lot of fun and a ton of people at my high school were involved. It wasn’t until much later I realized, in the Lord’s faithfulness, He was calling me to Him through the work of Young Life leaders. By my senior year, I was heavily plugged in and very close to my leader. She was so invested in my life, she showed up for just about everything I wanted or needed her for and she unrelentingly spoke life into me. I gave my life to Jesus at Crooked Creek, a Young Life camp in Colorado, and still to this day taking students to camp is one of the most tangible glimpses of the work of God I can point to. Seeing kids show up at the beginning of the week with walls and defenses up, then watching as they experience transformational freedom through the work of the Holy Spirit, is one of the biggest joys I know. When I started college, I immediately plugged in to Young Life there. A woman on staff invited me into her life and allowed me to walk alongside her and her family. There aren’t many words to describe how this simple act of discipleship changed my life. To see the gospel lived out in this radically ordinary way made me want to live my life for Jesus. She is still one of my closest friends many years later. I have been involved with Young Life on nearly every level — from volunteer leader, to camp intern, administrator — and now getting to tangibly live out the gospel in the lives of high school and college students. I get to show up in the same way that was done for me so many years ago — by going where they are and inviting them into a space where Jesus isn’t just someone that is talked about, but where they can see what it means to live for Him.

L.A. Airport Young Life started at Lennox Middle School in the fall of 1997 and then expanded to Hawthorne High School before becoming an official area in 2002. The area then branched out to El Segundo High School and the DaVinci Schools. Between El Segundo and Hawthorne, there is a diverse community made up of people who come from various socioeconomic backgrounds. There is a strong presence and history of Young Life in the community and our hope is to know 1,000 kids by name.
