Young Life was incorporated in 1941 by Jim Rayburn, a seminary student and part-time youth minister in Gainesville, Texas, who wanted to reach out to kids disinterested in church. Rayburn went where kids were and found creative ways to share the love of God with them. His methods continue to transform lives today.

ALLIE PICKERING

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” — John 8:12, ESV

AREA OVERVIEW

ALLIE’S STORY I grew up knowing who the Lord was, but I struggled to understand what it meant to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to understand my identity as a beloved child. I started going to WyldLife out of obligation since it was at my house every week, but I soon learned the sweetness of how it was a welcoming and loving place for me to be. Young Life became home to me as I continued to go. No longer was it a place I felt I had to go, instead it became a place that I desired to be. High school was a time of loneliness and anxiety, but my Young Life leaders pursued friendship with me so beautifully that I started to tangibly understand Jesus’ love. These people changed everything for me, helping me grow in my own confidence and my faith. I attended Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where I got the chance to be a Young Life leader for three and a half years. While leading, the Lord stretched me and gave me a heart for kids in a way I had never felt before. As I have been learning and growing in my faith throughout the years, I have been able to lean into my identity in Christ and His truth. It is a gift to be able to share this with high school students, knowing that Christ is the light in any darkness! My prayer is that kids may know full life in Christ! I am so thankful for the ways that the Lord has used Young Life in my life, and I am hopeful for the ways He will continue to reach the furthest out kids through it!

Gold Country Young Life has decades of fruitful ministry. Auburn has been the home base of the area, but the whole area includes five high schools that we are hoping to establish ministry at in the years to come. These high schools include: Placer, Foresthill, Colfax, Bear River and Nevada Union, as well as their accompanying middle schools. There have been many shifts in the structure and operation in this area, but faithful community members have kept the ministry alive and strong! For the past three years, Gold Country Young Life has had an active and involved committee, a full time Area Director and teams of volunteer leaders for middle school and high school ministry. There is a strong foundation of ministry in this area, and it is primed for growth! The area’s mission is to produce lifelong followers of Jesus Christ through relationships, service and support of adolescents in our community
