Good Eating In Pembrokeshire
The Plough Inn, Sageston

ince starting this article on our gastronomic voyages around Pembrokeshire we’ve ventured to many new places and experienced lots of different types of cuisine, but none have been so pleasantly surprising as The Plough Inn in the small village of Sageston near Carew.
To be honest Sageston is a place we had never thought of visiting before, although we have passed it many times going to Carmarthen and hadn’t thought twice about it until we were invited to try out the new menu at The Plough and write a short review about our meals there.
I found The Plough Inn very easy to find, with ample parking for the clientele they catered for, as we entered we were warmly welcomed by Sue Wright and her husband (the landlady and landlord,) they both made us feel at ease, treating us as if we were valued regular customers rather than the fresh faced client we actually were. The new menu and specials board were bursting with choice for starters, main course and desserts, it took us a while to decide, but the service was unhurried which was a bonus giving us both ample opportunity to make an informed and relaxed choice.
Sue took our order and frankly it seemed nothing was too much trouble for her or the staff in the kitchen. I ordered breaded butterfly king prawns with salad at £5.25 for my starter, I felt that the dish was slightly overpriced as I had four prawns with my serving, however the taste of this dish soon made me forget the price tag.

my colleague ordered brie wedges in breadcrumbs also served with salad at ÂŁ4.95 this came with a chilli salsa he informed me his starter was very tasty and to his mind well worth the price, we were both pleasantly surprised that the salad garnish was fresh and also full of flavour. There was a short rest between our first course and the main event; I had ordered Gammon, eggs, onion rings, mushrooms and salad, my colleague ordered surf and turf which comprised of 8oz sirloin steak, butterfly king prawns, mushrooms and salad with a side order of chips, I thought my main dish was lovely and I welcomed the addition of mushrooms, my friend informed me his dish was delicious and was delighted as he had ordered his steak rare and it was cooked to perfection and was a wonderful cut of meat in addition.
After finishing our delicious meals we spoke to Sue who informed us that they’ve just started a new takeaway menu recently and was already very popular, with dishes reasonably priced from £2.00 to £5.50 I thought the meals were very well priced and wish them well with this venture. We had a lovely evening and will definitely be returning soon. All we can say is if you want a good evening out, fantastic food and a very warm welcome, why not try The Plough in at Sageston?
We felt looked after during our meal and Sue’s occasional offer of refreshment didn’t make us feel pressured, she struck a perfect balance. The decor of the pub looks very modern at the back but the front main eating area is a warm, comfortable and welcoming area to eat in. It makes the Plough feel homely, but the juxtaposition between old and new is a tad confusing and can snap you out of an otherwise nice dining experience. Decor aside the food was great, the service was not intrusive and we felt welcomed from the get go.

Have-A-Go-Hero!
BP KARTING

his month Shaun informed that my adventure would be “eating his dust”. Not a particularly appealing idea but I was intrigued. Even more so when he picked me up and we headed for Withybush Showground.... Shaun, Luke and I were going Go-Karting, something I hadn’t done since I was younger and considerably lighter. Not being a driver I was initially concerned that my lack of skills might be a problem but, after we had thrown our safety gear on we got a thorough talk about the kart, how to handle them and stay safe while racing.
Shaun tried to overtake me on a corner and, being distracted by Luke spinning out, I honestly didn’t see him and clipped his back dunking him into the tyre wall. Oh no, I had accidentally gotten my own back, what a shame! As our 20 lap session came to an end I was exhilarated. The speed, the concentration, everything. I had no idea that racing around in Karts could be so much fun. In between our sessions we had some light-hearted banter and each told their own version of how they’d been unfairly shunted out of the race. We tried to get ourselves back in the mindset for racing but we were just having too much fun! Anne and the team made us feel completely at ease with our own limited skills and the great Karts that they use. We didn’t once feel in over our heads or concerned, even when tearing into a corner far too quickly.
Exuding ridiculous amount of over-confidence and offering my competitors two tickets to the gun show we stepped onto the tarmac and got ready to race!
I totally recommend BP Karting to anyone, from the newbies to the petrolheads, it really was a great amount of fun. As we were leaving we even began talking about a rematch....sorry guys, we hope you don’t mind us wreaking more havoc!
The karts are great, they’re fast, agile and responsive, you can really tell that Anne and the team at BP take great care to keep them in tip-top condition. Then our engines roared to life and we were waiting for the light to turn green....it felt like an age....and then we were off. I tore around the tarmac intent on keeping my friends behind me. The first lap was a very cautious one, we were still learning the Karts and the track. The second lap was a different story, we became more confident and people began to see places where they could sneak past the driver in front.
The Fast, The Furious and The Fool!
Shaun clipped the back of my kart quite early and spun me into the side. My first “crash”. It didn’t hurt anything but my pride and I was more annoyed that I could see my friends disappearing into the distance. Luckily I was soon back up and after my friends intent on getting the quickest lap time if nothing else. Very soon they were coming back around to try and lap me. Luke was now in the lead and really pushing hard to get me out of his way, he tried to undertake me going into a corner but ended up buried in the tyres. While watching this unfold Shaun then made his move....

PEMBROKESHIRE’S HIDDEN TREASURES Walking In Porthgain
M
y editor had the idea of opening up our magazine to the outdoor contingent of Pembrokeshire, I sat there happily informing him he had a wonderful idea. The conversation took a turn for the worse when he said ‘Gillian go out and buy yourself a pair of walking boots because this is your piece’ I sat there shocked for a few moments as his words sank in....
I quickly called a friend who was into all things outdoors, he kitted me out with a waterproof and a pair of sturdy boots. I looked the part, Then we wanted to plan an easy route to start, we looked at a big ordnance survey map of Pembrokeshire and put a pin in the map, which landed in Porthgain. After packing a rucksack I informed my friend I would see him bright and early and went to bed. The next morning it was a struggle to leave the warm and comforting grip of the duvet, after 30 minutes or so I was a girl reporter ready for action and being driven to our destination. My friend giving me lots of tips regarding walking and outdoor life (I fear he thinks he is Bear Grylls).
We arrived, put on our walking boots and were off. The views across the water at Porthgain were amazing, we followed the mouth of the harbour and then traversed the steepest steps I have ever seen, but the climb was worth it as the sight that met me took my breath away; the raging seas and the majestic cliffs standing up to the relentless pounding of the waves. As I looked up to the heavens just starting to feel comfortable with this new challenge I had been entrusted with, the heavens opened and myself and my friend were instantly soaked to the skin, we braved the weather and continued to follow the coastline away from the village itself. We battled Mother Nature herself following the path “Bear Grylls” informing me he felt exhilarated (what planet was he on?) My friend said on a clear day the walk was very easy and had stunning views, possibly being able to spot the odd seal. We walked for another 20 minutes and then both decided we would return to the harbour, and have lunch in the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the local pub which has friendly staff and a fine selection of food and drinks. I recommend this walk for beginners like myself, I was able to walk much father this time as the weather was warm and inviting and the views aided my walk, making the route feel much easier this time. If you’re down Porthgain way, why not try this route and treat yourself to a good meal in the local Inn.

We wanted more, so we spoke to the guys at OnLive and begged them for a pre-release version of their set-top box so we can stream their vast array of games directly to our TV. They obliged and 24 hours later it arrived....

You save money, you save space, you can rent full games for 3-5 days for £3-£5, a great price to experience the full game before commiting to purchasing so you save money and, as the console is so small you save space too. Back in 2008 I was dragged (kicking and screaming) to the cinema and witnessed a film that defied my expectations to enthrall and entertain me against my will. 2 sequels later and the ultimate 21st century love story has entered its final stages. With Edward and Bella’s marriage at hand the story revolves primarily around their coupling (much to Jacob Black’s protest) and, after a headboard shattering wedding night, their half-human, half-vampire child. But beware, this is NOT your regular happy ending. This is a gore filled, realistic take on birth that’ll pull no punches and have you really sympathising with Bella’s predicament. She’s carrying a child who can break her ribs with a small kick and leeches off of her frail form because of an unending hunger for the red stuff....
The acting seems solid with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner all back and ready to close one of Hollywood’s most enduring love triangles. With a wedding, a honeymoon, a birth and a death all on the cards we’re promised a roller coaster ride of emotions. Say what you will about the story and the actors; this film promises to be a spectacle, and that’s just Jedward Cullen’s hair. This will be a must-see film for me. I’ll say it’s just to keep my girlfriend happy but I find these films quite good myself. They’re a definite guilty pleasure. I’m quietly optimistic that Breaking Dawn can cast aside the mediocrity of New Moon and Eclipse. But I don’t think it’ll be able to scale the heady heights of the original Twilight film. Time will tell this November when the film hits the cinemas and hoards of R-Patz fans get their fangs into the beginning of the end of The Twilight Saga....

used to have a Batman costume, back when I was a boy. It’s no secret that Batman is my favourite superhero and one that, until 2009, had never been adequately captured by computer games..... Then Rocksteady Games unleashed Batman: Arkham Asylum and it broke records. For the first time EVER I played a game that made me feel like Batman. Not the KAPOW! ZOK! and OOOF! Batman of my childhood, but The Dark Knight. A grown up’s Batman.

Our initial worries about how Batman would play with more of a sandbox feel were instantly dismissed, Arkham City is in the midst of a gang war. Several gangs in fact are all vying for control of Arkham City so the area is broken up into self-contained “turfs” populated with members of the gang in charge of that area. So the vast space feels broken down into smaller chunks and, as the gang war erupts around you, you can often slup through areas of Arkham City as little more than a bat-shaped shadow.
Arkham City pick’s the baton up from it’s predecessor and takes it to new heights. The graphics look great, the music retains the brooding, ominous feel that really helped turn Arkham Asylum into a scary place.
These gangs need leaders and luckily the inmates of Arkham City include are those leaders; Mr. Freeze, TwoFace, Solomon Grundy, The Riddler, Catwoman, The Penguin and more, are all eager for a confrontation with our Dark Knight. Who has lost none of the combo’s or gadgets from his previous outing.
But it’s time to leave the old asylum behind as the action this time takes place on the abandoned streets of Gotham that have been turned into a makeshift asylum until the original is back up and running.
If Rocksteady can muster up the same magic that blessed 2009’s game of the year then this will be a sure fire hit with enough gameplay clout behind it to make it a potential game of the year for 2011 as well.
This is a great story led reason to increase the scope, scale and size of the original. Instead of wards and asylum grounds to play in, you have neglected city blocks and crumbling buildings.
There may even be enough room for the boy wonder in this one....
Funny, captivating and very well written, this book will entertain adult and child alike. It rolls along nicely, and keeps a captive audience throughout. A great sequel to the first Tom Tyme book, with a great set of characters, and a well thought out plot. Stefan Jakubowski does not disappoint! It is nice to see a great author, living and working in Pembrokeshire. I hope to see many more books from him!

I certainly believe that some people see ghosts, but what it is that they are actually seeing remains the key question. Are they apparitions of the dead; a replay of some past event or a trick of their imagination? I don’t believe we know the answers and that’s why we need to keep looking.
C. For me, it’s not a question of belief. I’m fascinated
by the idea, the investigations and the accounts from witnesses. To date, however, I haven’t been presented with the proof that would convince me of the reality of ghosts.

of the year; by day and by night. I think that Halloween people are just more aware of the paranormal and also they tend to be involved in some activity that’s related to the celebrations - so they are probably just likely to get to see what they expect (and hope) to see.

change to do some ghost hunting close to home. I’m really looking forward to “Ghosthunting: The Psychic and the Science” weekend at Plas Hyfryd. Ciarán and I will be presenting our popular joint Ghosthunting skills workshop and leading the overnight investigation at The Plas. And for a nice change I get to sleep in my own bed afterwards.

Halloween Special With Pembrokeshire Beyond
W
ith Halloween almost upon us and the nights drawing in people turn their attention to the spookier side of life. For some it means scary costumes and sweets, for us it means the real work of investigating paranormal reports in Pembrokeshire can begin even earlier! As the gorgeous summer evenings are all but behind us, we don’t have to wait until 9-10pm for it to get dark. We can finally tackle the reported sightings of an apparition on the A4076 coming into Steynton. All reports take place during the hours of darkness so trying to investigate it during the summer was a bit of a headache for your friendly neighbourhood paranormal team!
Since the media storm surrounding the ‘Haunted Highway’ we’ve had an influx of reports from around our county, people are starting to open up about their experiences and we’ve learnt that Pembrokeshire really is far more spiritually active than we had initially thought....
So, now that we’re done touting for ghostly reports, it’s time to start touting for members. We want open minded individuals to come onboard and join our team, it’s totally voluntary and all we ask is that you aren’t afraid of the dark and of speaking your mind. The great thing about these new reports is that they don’t all focus on ‘hot spots’. Some of them are from places we’ve never heard of and from very unexpected sources. Several fishermen who frequent Wards Pier in Milford Haven have reported seeing strange lights and hearing noises from the abandoned mining depot in Blackbridge, a place we had never heard spooky stories about before! Sadly, some of the spooky sightings that get reported to us are simply impossible to investigate. Modern health and safety rules mean visiting decaying buildings like the old mining depot is completely impossible. It can be so frustrating but that’s the name of the game. The same thing can be said of the many forts that litter Pembrokeshire. We will never be able to follow up reports from them as they’re just in too poor a condition to get access to. But with new reports coming in daily you don’t seem to get long to sit and wish about the impossible. So keep them coming in, we can’t implore that enough. Without those reports we’d be sitting around all night drinking coffee and chatting, not doing what we love!

embrokeshire has always had a spiritual side, and there has been no better display of this than the annual West Wales Health show held in the Pavilion at the Haverfordwest Showground in Withybush. We caught up with the organiser of the much loved event; Rosemary Griffiths to get some background information....
“The Show originally started as a ‘fun open day’ in my house, we had readings in the bedroom, Reiki and spiritual healing in the living room and Jo was selling crystals in the kitchen in amongst 2 large pans of homebade Cawl. There has always been a need to increase awareness about complimentary therapy, Earth energy and healing so we decided to develop the fun day in to something more large scale. Since making that decision the show has gone from strength to strength.
The show is now held over 2 days and runs twice annually, and we are continuously looking to reach out into other areas to show the Pembrokeshire people and visitors to the area. Many of the core exhibitors are still with me from my ‘living room days’, and I would like to say that without them and a core group of people made up from friends, family, colleagues and students – all of whom offer their time and wonderful energies – the show would not be the success that is today.

This long practised and rather diverse tool using the mind to produce a sense of well-being and self awareness has now started to be fully understood through science too. Over the coming few months I will be looking at concepts within the umbrella of meditation and how they can impact positively on your life with a suggested technique to try out at home For today, why not try some simple deep belly breathing. Put your hand on your upper belly and with your in breath imagine you are blowing your belly outwards with the air, then up into your rib cage as it expand. Pause for a few counts and then slowly release the breath as if you squeezing the air out by contracting your belly muscles. Pause for a moment or two and repeat several times. Do not force this and make sure you do not go dizzy. Whilst deep breathing keep your attention on the process so you are thinking of nothing else. This exercise not only helps utilise your lung capacity but starts to begin to train the mind in the art of concentration and if you are able to breath in and out through your nose, create a sense of calm. Anti-aging injections in the cosmetic industry

It acts by temporarily blocking the junction between the nerve and the muscle. The most popular areas treated are frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet.
Dermal Fillers are another product which has changed the cosmetic practice dramatically. They essentially are a collagen which might be synthetic or natural or a combination of the two. The basic roles of dermal fillers are to pump up the area into which it is injected and thereby change the contour of the skin. As one grows old the epidermis thins out leading to decreasing ability to protect the dermis from water loss. Added to the mix is the decreasing production of collagen as the existing collagen becomes ineffective. These results in wrinkles, pronounced furrowing of the normal folds of the skin and depressions in the skin. Dermal fillers act by replenishing the natural collagen rendered less effective due to the aging process. The most popular areas treated are the naso labial line which extends from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth, the lips, the smile and depressions in the skin caused by aging or acne. Other commonly treated areas are weak and sunken cheeks, marionette lines (mouth to chin), tear troughs (tired and baggy eyes) and lip lines caused by smoking. Contouring and enhancements include eyebrow reshaping, chin enhancement, cheek and lip enhancement and turning up the mouth corners (dropped smiles). Come visit us at Seraphim Aesthetics.

love Christmas in the office, though it normally starts for us in September with the boss telling us what plans are ahead in the magazine for Christmas so we can inform our customers in plenty of time. Then come the mince pies and Christmas carols, so by November I have normally had enough!

One of the traditions that I do love is that of the Secret Santa. The original idea, so I have heard, was to allow gift-giving without causing the giver to go broke; by giving a present to one person, you symbolically give it to everyone that works there. Basically you pick a colleagues name at random, and then purchase that person a small, inexpensive gift which is then dispersed at or slightly before Christmas. Fun though this is there are some rules of etiquette out there! Try to stick to a small amount; for even close workers, a few pounds is acceptable. The idea is to show that you like and respect the person; a small gift is all that is required to demonstrate this. Anything more expensive is actually almost offensive, as it demonstrates too great an affection. Try at all costs to avoid gifts that are rude, intimate, or just tasteless. As the gift will be given in public, gifts that would be better given in private should be avoided. If you feel the gift must be given, then give it in private as a special, personal gift. There were a number of other rule out there and I am sure we haven’t seen them all, but I think that those two are adequate enough for now. Above all the idea is to generally have fun, and show your respect for the person....but there is always that awkward person to buy for!

ilford Haven Port Authority is in its final year of the European INTERREG IVA funded project Rising Tide. The project is a multi faceted collaborative project between Milford Haven Port Authority, Pembrokeshire College MITEC Centre, John F Kennedy Trust and Kilkenny Leader Partnership.

Rising Tide covers a geographical area of 6 counties on the West Wales Coast, with a similar geographical area in South East Ireland. By investing in 6 maritime events in towns within these areas, over the 3 year period of the project; it is hoped that this will bring a positive effect on those local economies, whilst also creating some sustainability for the future.
The project focus is; regeneration of coastal communities, building of a strong body for maritime heritage in Wales and Ireland, and provision of specialised training. Rising Tide is a pioneering marine based project, hailed as an example of best practice in Wales. Teams of 6 people to take part in a 10 week training programme. To be eligible, participants must be at least 16 years of age and not in education, employment or training. ( there is no upper age limit) The programme is run at Pembrokeshire College’s MITEC centre in Milford Haven and offers qualifications including sailing, power boating, navigation, first aid, VHF radio, boat building and marine engineering. There is no charge to attend the course and financial assistance may be available for people who are currently in receipt of benefits.
Each team takes part in a week-long residential visit to Kilkenny in Ireland, working with the Kilkenny Leader Partnership students. There is also an opportunity to be crew on a tall ship voyage. This summer, Rising Tide participants took part in a voyage on board the Challenge Wales Yacht, which was a life changing experience for all Project co-ordinator, Beverley Richards said “All the activities are underpinned by the aims of awakening ambition and improving confidence. All skills are transferable to all walks of life and careers and so far the outcomes have been outstanding, with participants progressing onto further training or employment” Rising Tide is an incredible opportunity to attain some real, useful, relevant qualifications, meet new people, try new activities and embark on an adventure. Rising Tide participants will also work alongside MITEC’s Boatbuilding students on the build of a replica Tenby Lugger
The Maritime Heritage of both Wales and Ireland is sadly neglected and Rising Tide is setting out to change this by creating a strong unified body that will bring attention to the areas whilst securing the associated culture and stories for the future. Through this unification, participation in UK and European Maritime Heritage forums will provide the support and information necessary to improve interpretation and highlight the Maritime history. It is these three aspects which Rising Tide sets out to bring together, to investigate best practises, develop interpretation models and to provide the support and security, whilst telling the rest of our countries, this Maritime History, this Heritage, this Culture is an important part of our lives which cannot be forgotten and which can once again become a part of our economy. t’s hard to believe now that Neyland Marina is 28 years old, but that has been ample time for a ‘village’ community to grow into serving all the diverse needs of Pembrokeshire and visiting boaters....

When you arrive at Brunel Quay, obviously the first thing you notice is the Marina itself. Neyland Yacht Haven by its official name, offers a naturally sheltered, scenic location with the option of year round and seasonal berths with full tidal access, or even daily berths for visiting sailors. Nationally renowned by visiting yachtsmen and the national boating press this marina is a true credit to Pembrokeshire. But of course as well as somewhere to moor, every boat needs to be equipped and maintained, and that’s where Brunel Quay immediately impressed – there’s a business there to cater for just about every boating need. Dale Sailing, have a chandlery selling ‘everything from the smallest shackle to a giant outboard’, a fuel pontoon selling diesel and soon to be also selling petrol, a service workshop, a boat building yard that offers everything from a new boat build to a high quality repaint or just a spring time spruce up.
I caught up with Barry Jones, manager of the chandlery. “Yes, we do sell it all – a lot more than we can display on the shop, at this time of year we’re selling all that you need for a winter layup as well as some great ideas for Christmas presents for the boater in your life.” Barry was also keen to point out their pricing policy keeps the chandlery competitive with the best prices on the internet whilst offering the convenience of being able to shop on your doorstep. A peek inside the other buildings at Dale Sailing was quite amazing, you would never guess such unassuming boat sheds hid such a hive of activity – as well as the engine servicing I expected to see, I also witnessed electronics experts carrying out the most sophisticated of installations, boats being resprayed to a mirror finish and even some complete boat builds – another story in itself. But I was most intrigued with their newly launched dry-stack berthing facility; the very first of its kind in West Wales. Mike Reynolds gave me the full run down:

Wandering a little further along the quay, I could see what Mike meant – right at centre of the marina there was quite a buzz, and not just from boaters – cyclists and walkers using the Brunel cycle and footpaths, as well as boat owners were all catching up with friends, exchanging tales and settling down with a tea or coffee in the area in front of the café which enjoys great views of the marina. Stopping off for lunch myself, it was clear clear the café is more of a ‘café-plus’ – I’d already heard about their home cooked breakfasts, but I found a menu that included some delicious speciality dishes and a range of very tempting cakes all made from local produce at the cafe. Adjacent to the café was another well-stocked chandlery run by a very friendly Mrs. Haynes, one of the best loved characters of the Brunel Quay community I was told. Carrying on my stroll I found ‘The Bar’ which is also a restaurant. Some of the locals told me in no uncertain terms about how the freshness and superb quality of their food with fresh fish specials, home made breads and locally sourced ingredients makes it one of the best places to eat in Pembrokeshire! But before I left there were two more marine businesses to visit. Stephen Ratsey Sailmakers is another long-established business that as well as being sailmakers, offers a full range of complementary services such as cover making, sail and cover washing and repairs, mast replacement and the setting up and tuning of rigging. Milford Marina is now offering winter berthing for your boat on both marina berths or ashore. Our yard is safe and secure and you can access your boat whenever you wish to carry out those essential winter jobs, ready for the 2012 season.
Electricity and water is also provided. If however you wish to keep your boat afloat for that opportunistic winter sail, we can offer marina berths at competitive prices. We will also fix prices for winter hard storage and berthing until the end of March 2012 if you book before the end of the year. Winter storage ashore costs ÂŁ2.60 per metre per week and a winter berthing starts at ÂŁ33.50 per per metre per quarter (minimum charge length is 6m). So, rather than leaving your boat to the mercy of the weather on a swinging mooring, bring it to Milford Marina, where we will care for your pride and joy during the wnter months. If you decide to take an annual berth after spending your winter at Milford Marina, we will back date your contract and charge the lower rate associated with the annual berth (prices updated in January 2012). s n n e w w h o o c t D he Ha Continued D n n e e t t t t a T Ba B Preparing Your Boat If you do not intend to use your boat until the 2012 season begins, there are some simple maintenance tasks to carry out to ensure all is ship shape and ready for April. Engines do not like salt water and it is important to flush your raw water cooling system with fresh water to remove all traces of salt. You should also consider winterising your engine. All good marine service centres will be able to do this work for you, or if you have a bit of maintenance knowledge, you could do this yourself. High winds during the winter also mean that it is essential to remove sails and stow them in a well aired and dry place on the boat, or even better, at home in the garage. You should also remove all spray dodgers and spray canopies and tie down halyards. If you intend on leaving your boat afloat, ensure all your seacocks are closed and remove any valuables from the boat.
Using your Boat
Fill your diesel tanks to the top to minimise the formation of condensation and drain your fresh water system. It is a good idea to remove soft furnishings, or at least prop cushions up inside the boat to allow air to circulate. A pontoon berth also allows the option of installing a mains powered dehumidifier to ensure the inside of your vessel remains fresh and dry..
Why not consider using your boat during the winter. The Milford Haven Waterway offers 20 miles of sheltered water and can provide a relaxing day out even in the depths of winter. Although many of the landing stages will have been removed, there are still many locations to visit such as Lawrenny Yacht Station and Rudders Boat Yard. You can also drop anchor, or pick up a buoy at many locations around the Haven, such as Dale, Angle or Llangwm. If the weather is fine, a winter trip to the islands will offer a relaxing day out where you can see wildlife that remains on the island year round. The scenery off the Coast of West Wales can also be enjoyed, possibly without seeing another vessel. The Haven sailing clubs also offer winter racing and many of the bars and restaurants around the Haven remain open for business.

We’re plagued by poor drivers who routinely flout speed limits as they head home from, I’m assuming, the Murco Refinery and the LNG Plant as, shortly before 5pm our village becomes a grand prix track of people racing home. However, it isn’t just regular employees risking lives. It’s tanker drivers from Murco too who speed through our village at 2am, shaking houses from foundations to eaves and tear down the Bulford Road and Quarry Lorry drivers from FH Gilman’s down the road too. We were graced with a few speed traps/crossings to try and slow drivers through the village but, as money talks louder than public safety, Murco had 50% of them removed so that they could carry on bringing in heavy loads via the Dale Road. All of that, coupled with no off-road playing area for our children and an impotent and out-of-date community council is really beginning to make an accident in our village an inevitability. How it hasn’t happened already is some kind of miracle. We’re at the end of our tether, we’re one step short of disappearing out with a shovel to “borrow” a speed bump or two from the ridiculous amount of speed traps in Thornton! By A Worried Resident

As a charity shop manager of 10 years, I understand where Anna is coming from; there are a few charities that do appear to over price stock, particularly the ones that use the Internet, however I can only speak for my own shop. 1: A very small proportion of our stock is free (as in handed into the shop by a member of the public) I have to PAY for a driver and fuel every week to go and collect me enough stock to meet the needs of my shop. We do not get nearly enough free stock to cover our outgoings. 2: Our shops are a business, a serious business run to make as much money as possible for the BRITISH RED CROSS. We certainly do NOT benefit from reduced rents etc. 3: We offer a full refund for anything purchased that doesn’t suit for whatever reason (you won’t get that at a car boot sale Anna). For Anna to use phrases like: open mockery and smacks of greed can only have a detrimental effect on our shops, for anyone that is doubt of our commitment please go to our website www.redcross.org.uk. I feel that society label the people I work with and this is unfair, the only way we as individuals can change our prejudices is to spend time getting to know this sector of society, welcoming them into our community full time, not as a token gesture. Would you be able to volunteer a small amount of your time, this would help in two ways, you would be able to help someone in need and find out more about them so fear of the unknown is reduced and, eventually, disappears. You can also inform friends or family to see if they could also help: making this a real community without discrimination. t is surprising that even in this day and age, a lot of houses rely on a traditional Yale type night latch as the main form of securing their front doors, and even more surprisingly, so do many businesses....

The main principle of a Yale type latch is to provide passive security, so quite simply, no one can just open the door and walk in, but a modest kick or shoulder to the door in most cases is all that is needed in which to force access.
The main concern with this is how simple it is for a burglar to make an escape. They may have come through a window, but you have made it so much simpler to leave with your 50 inch plasma TV through your back or patio door. Burglars would have looked through all accessible windows, checking to see if they could get out quickly and easily through different doors. Seeing keys left in back doors or simply a lonely Yale type lock on the front door makes the Risk/Reward ratio far greater for the burglar. In essence, you are inviting them in. There is always the concern of fire in the home. Common sense may seem to say that leaving a key in a back door ensures a means of escape in the event of fire, but we would recommend that you have spare keys cut and hidden in an area that you can gain access to, to open a door through which to escape. Don’t rely on your normal set of keys, as quite often in an emergency, you will never remember where you dropped them the evening before. The Walters Group do carry out free security surveys. We are all accustomed to the Yale latch on the door for simplicity, turn a lever to get out, and a simple twist of a key to get in. However, if you are relying on this as your main way of securing your front door, it is simply not good enough. Needless to say that your insurance may be invalid as well. There are different types of Yale type night latches. Some have dead locks, giving a better degree of security; some now even have a British Standard Kite mark. If you are fortunate to have a BS Night latch, remember to deadlock the handle on the inside for it to comply with your insurance. You can’t beat having a dead lock on both your front and back doors. The minimum should be a 5 lever dead lock, and with the event of Euro profile locks becoming more popular, there are a range of these that are comparable to a 5 lever dead lock. These allow you to use a smaller Yale type key. You should however, strive to ensure all locks on external doors are to BS3621. This is a standard that is accepted by insurance companies, and you must use these locks. If you do not, your insurance may be invalid if fitting the correct lock or correct use of the lock already in place would have avoided the burglary. One thing to remember with dead locks is to take the key out. We see so many properties when we are doing security surveys where the keys are left in the locks. Patio doors, sliding doors, back doors are nearly always left with the key in the door.

Ever since I first clambered aboard a diminutive Shetland pony at the age of five I have been on a lifelong adventure with horses. But this has been no love story, more like an aga saga, with tearful partings, fallings out, and off, detours into real life and joyful returns to the simplest and most complicated of all relationships, the owner and his human....

Those readers who grew up in “proper” horsey households will not read far in to this column before they deduce that my family were amateurs in the equine arts. This does not begin to describe how naïve we were. Nobody in my family had ever had horses; we lived in the middle of a city, albeit with some land around our suburban semi, and I was a waif like five year old who had never shown the remotest interest in riding. My father must have had a rush of blood to the head, or spent too long watching Horse of the Year Show or something, because he suddenly decided to buy me a pony, from an Irish travelling horse dealer, enough said. The pony he bought rejoiced in the somewhat subjective name of Beauty. He had obviously been drawn by Thelwell. He was short fat and hairy, which may be an appearance that would spell instant rejection in a boyfriend, but stole my infant heart from the moment his button eyes shone out at me from beneath his trailing forelock. Unfortunately I was too young to realise that those shining eyes were reflecting a positively Machiavellian intelligence that was focussed on getting his own way, preferably by riding roughshod over his rider.
If you have ever known a Shetland pony you will know that they don’t really have withers, and withers are the handy lump God put where the pony’s body ends and his neck begins, to keep the saddle in place. Beauty knew that if he took off as fast as his short fat hairy legs could carry him there would be very little I could do to stop him. He did stop though, suddenly and without warning, whereupon his saddle would continue to travel down his neck, causing small me to describe a graceful arc over his head and land in a heap in front of those shining eyes.
The little monster would then take off into the far distance, still wearing his saddle like a Viking helmet. He didn’t disappear from view though, once he had achieved a suitable distance to build up a head of steam he would turn and gallop back, straight over the top of his poor prostrate rider. I spent many of my formative years explaining horse shoe shaped bruises in strange places to teachers who probably suspected my poor parents of bizarre child abuse.
Looking back, I’m sure we were using the wrong girth. I’m sure we didn’t even know there were a variety of girths that one could use, we knew nothing. One day in the first week of our ownership I went to the stable in the morning to find two teeth in the water bucket. My father was outraged, he believed we had been sold an ancient nag and were going to have to feed the poor beast with gruel until it tottered off to the meadow in the sky. He was somewhat taken aback when the hastily summoned vet told us that we had in fact bought a pony that was probably about two years old and was shedding baby teeth. We didn’t know that a bolt on a stable door is not enough to keep a barrel chested Shetland from marching straight to freedom, the spoils of the vegetable patch and, once he learned to open the back door, the sugar bowl on the kitchen table. We didn’t know so many things that it was a wonder we didn’t kill poor Beauty, or he didn’t kill me. It didn’t matter though, I was hooked, and over four decades later, I still am..
