Welcome back to YOUR Pembrokeshire

e hope this issue finds you well and enjoying the final days of a somewhat unpredictable summer. But, come rain or shine, we can’t begrudge the armies of tourists that

descend on our gorgeous county eager to experience all our county has to offer.

Enough of moaning about the weather; Welcome to Your Pembrokeshire’s action-packed second issue. Intent on avoiding the dreaded “second album” syndrome we’ve hit the phones with new-found enthusiasm and had another challenging and interesting month speaking about glorious Pembrokeshire and how we can help bring people together from all over our county. Hopefully you’ll find the fruits of our labour interesting, engaging and fun as those are some of the qualities you’ll find throughout our county and some of the main reasons tourists flock to our small little corner of Wales. While we do try and cater to every taste in Pembrokeshire, some, unfortunately, are overlooked. So if there’s something going on that we’ve missed or if you want to see us do a particular feature or article: Please let us know. How else can we represent YOUR Pembrokeshire?

Pembrokeshire is CHANGING!

ince we launched Your Pembrokeshire magazine in September we’ve had a huge response from readers and advertisers alike....

While nearly all has been positive we’ve also been asked to do sections that, for a premium county wide publication dependent on advertisers, we simply can’t afford to run. Pembrokeshire people want Classified Adverts, What’s On listings, more competitions and more relevant articles. Pembrokeshire businesses want a publication readers will pick up, keep and refer back to. They also want great prices in challenging economic times. Door-To-Door distribution and printing has kept our advertising rates high and have put off smaller businesses. So, going off of YOUR feedback, and after great consideration, we’re making some changes to Your Pembrokeshire....

How Can You Help? We still need your feedback. We really want our magazine to become Pembrokeshire’s must have monthly publication. In order to achieve that high benchmark that we’ve set for ourselves we open everything about this magazine up to you. Are you looking to sell something? We’ll be providing FREE listings for items under £100.00. Are you holding an event? We want to become the one stop guide to all events in Pembrokeshire, so let us know what you’re doing and we’ll discuss how we can best help push and promote your event in our magazine. Are you a budding writer or photographer? Send us examples of your work and, if it’s right for the magazine, we’ll run it. This is open to any hobby or past time you might be involved in. Are we missing something? Is something going on in Pembrokeshire that we don’t know about? Well, email or phone us and let us know. By making these changes you, the reader, have the choice to craft a magazine that’s useful, informative and, above all, relevant. Make sure you pick up the October edition in a location near you!

The Future From October our magazine will no longer be going through the doors of Pembrokeshire homes. Instead you’ll be able to find our magazine in over 400 local shops and businesses! We’re making the publication BIGGER and using that space for classified adverts, event listings and recruitment adverts we’re aiming to become Pembrokeshire’s Essential Monthly Magazine. A Magazine that the public want to pick up and keep and that all businesses can afford to advertise in. Only by doing this can we truly offer the people of Pembrokeshire a magazine that reflects US. We are truly dedicated to crafting a publication that we can all find, use and help create.

Pembrokeshire Businesses

Were our rates too much for you? See our new rate card on Page 30 or call us on 01646 663008 and see how we can help promote your business in Pembrokeshire’s must have Magazine. A forward thinking, relevant magazine for everything Pembrokeshire is in the 21st century. Our magazine is capable of so much more and, thanks to your feedback, we’ve realised that and we want to create the publication Pembrokeshire wants right now. A free, content-based publication with sections on events, classified listings, recruitment etc. with an attractive rate card that doesn’t exclude the smaller businesses. We hope you can see the reasons for our changes and we hope you share our goal of a publication built by the people, for the people with something in it to attract everyone and advertising prices that make sense in these tough, economic times.

See you in October!

Good Eating In Pembrokeshire

O

n the outskirts of Haverfordwest, on the corner of portfield and the Dale road is a rather unassuming pub. The Bellevue is one of those places that most know of, but few go in to sample what it has to offer. And boy, does this pub have much to offer!

We booked to eat at the “all day Sunday lunch” and was pleasantly suprised by the amount of parking available to the rear of the pub. Walking through the door gave us another suprise with modern and clean fixtures and fittings. But more importantly, a friendly smile and welcome from behind the bar.

Having introduced ourselves, we took our seat, unrushed and unhurried by the waiting staff. Having decided on the traditional roast beef and Roast Pembrokeshire turkey, we were served our drinks.

The starter was served hot, promptly and without fuss. I was intrigued by the combination of Cheese and dill but it WORKED brilliantly, so much so, I would order it again. Care was taken over the side salad, and it felt as if we were “special” (NOTE: at this stage, they weren’t aware that we were reviewing the meal) The meal itself was SUPERB! The meats presented with none of the boring boiled vegetables that are the usual fayre at “traditional pub lunches” but potatoe dauphinoise! Cabbage with cream herbs and spices that really brought out the flavour and carrots coated in proper butter. The only criticism, if any that could be made, is the serving staff, whilst superbly efficient, courteous, & pleasant, could have done with smiling a little more! Overall, The Bellevue is now a mainstay on our “sunday lunch” list and will be for a long time. Thoroughly enjoyed the food, company and service - WELL DONE.

t’s a Saturday, one of my few days off and Shaun asked me if I wanted to ‘Do Lunch’. Thinking Shaun was being all cosmopolitan; I agreed. It turns out that Shauns idea of doing lunch is slightly different from mine.... We take a drive out to the Plas Hyfryd Hotel and their amazing Ivory Restaurant. As soon as we park up my mouth is watering at the idea of getting my teeth into some delicious Thrice Cooked Chunky Chips. Sadly, my plan suffered a bit of a set back as, rather than eating some of the Ivory’s delicious cuisine, they sprung the surprise on me that I’d be helping craft some of the finest food in Pembrokeshire.

After my stretch in the kitchen came to an end I got to sample some of the fruits of my labours. I helped flambe a Brandy and Peppercorn sauce for a really plump Prime Rump Steak that I felt was totally deserved after my experience. I hope my brief stint as chef didn’t damage the Ivory’s fine reputation and, as of typing this, no-one got food poisoning! So I couldn’t have been THAT bad. I was amazed by my time at the Ivory, the Chefs and the food are of a really high standard and I didn’t appreciate the amount of effort that went into crafting their dishes. So pop in if you’re passing and, as long as I’m nowhere near the kitchen, try the Sweet Potato and Parsnip chips, they’re absolutely delicious!

By Andy Chandler

Don’t I look great in my Chef’s Clothes? I was initially quite worried about stepping into the kitchen. How can I, a guy that once burnt Instant Noodles, help craft some of the finest food in our county? Luckily they put me under the care of one of the Ivory’s chefs who helped me create some amazingly tasty (even if I do say so myself) Sweet Potato and Parsnip Crisps for their Al A Carte menu.

They look pretty tasty right? One thing became clear to during my afternoon in the kitchen, they have some of the most skilled chef’s I have ever seen lift a ladle. Not only are they skilled but they’re the nicest guy’s you’ll ever meet and were more than happy to show me how to cut Carrots....

Pembroke Dock

The Renewable Royal Dockyard

O

f all the towns in Pembrokeshire, none has such a distinguished history as Pembroke Dock. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The evidence is right there in front of you.

Consider those gridiron streets, the towering Dock walls and glimpses of half covered railway tracks in the town centre. All point to a time when a staggering capital investment was made in this waterside community. Go back 200 years when Napoleonʼs great armies were being ground into submission across Europe. Then, there was no such place as Pembroke Dock. The sloping banks of the River Cleddau below Pembroke town – itself no small player in the timeline of Britainʼs history – were simply farmland and wooded shores. And yet within a few decades Pembroke Dock was building and launching some of Britainʼs mightiest ships of the line, behemoths that bullied and muscled their way to creating the greatest Empire the world had ever seen. In its heyday some 2900 people worked in the Royal Dockyard. An entire town had been laid out with typical military precision to support it. The Docks were without doubt of enormous national importance. The great walled Dockyard would turn out more than 200 ships of the line and 5 royal yachts. But the economic importance of these Docks to Pembrokeshire at that time is almost impossible to measure. Certainly the benefits were felt far beyond the town itself. The best way to judge the economic role of Pembroke Dock would be to look at then catastrophic decline that followed the end of PDʼs days as a shipbuilding giant, and its consequential role as a base for Army, Navy and Air Force garrisons. Pembroke Dock went from being a beacon of an Empireʼs greatness, to a scarred epicentre of one of the most economically hard up corners of Europe. At its lowest point many had lost hope that the town could even survive.....

8

Fast forward to today and certainly Pembroke Dock is not what it used to be. But the popular perception that PD is now a town without purpose, a standing metaphor to regional decline, could not be further from the truth. Inside the walls of the once great Dockyard, an almost unseen revolution is taking place. And once again, the Docks’ economic influence is spreading into surrounding areas. Employment is on the rise, and the talents of engineers, draughtsmen and shipwrights are being engaged for clients across the world. The extravagant industrial needs of the petrochemical giants down river, coupled with the legacy of excellent waterside facilities puts Pembroke Dock in an astonishingly strong position in the 21st century. It has once again found a purpose, and is becoming a vital regional, even national, asset. Beyond the gateways of the Royal Dockyard, the Port of Pembroke, Mustang Marine, Unit Birwelco, Ledwood Engineering and other companies are busier than ever. All are equipped in their own way to help PD challenge the rest of Europe to become one of the centres for the fast growing renewable energy industry. And they are ready for that challenge. Claire Palmer is responsible for Business Development at Milford Haven Port Authority, which owns and operates the Port.

Pembroke Dock

“Whether it’s wind, wave or tidal the west Wales coast is a gateway to an abundance of energy”, says Claire. “To maximise its potential, it needs designers, fabricators and engineers, and the ability to launch boats and ship components with ease. That’s exactly what we have here. As it was in 1812, today Pembroke Dock is the right place at the right time.” As it approaches its bicentenary this is an industrious yard once again. But history is being preserved and celebrated too. The great Garrison Chapel is restored and the incredible Sunderland Flying Boat Museum is fast becoming a landmark on the tourist route. The Museum’s creators have set themselves the challenge of raising from beneath the murky waters of the Haven, the only remaining airframe of a wartime Sunderland anywhere in the world. So once again events have conspired to put Pembroke Dock in a powerful position to lead Pembrokeshire’s economic growth. It has the facilities, the men and women and the location to make it a big player in the European renewable energy industry. MHPA Quayside Est 140x95_Layout 1 08/08/2011 10:20 Page 1

Charity Does NOT Begin At Home!

recently had cause to browse the Internet for no particular reason, and found myself visiting numerous charity websites, just to see what was going on at these worthy causes.... I was rather taken aback by the prices I found attached to many items that I could pick up at summer fairs or car boot sales, at a fraction of the price. In fact, some of the prices were downright ridiculous. I decided to keep browsing and found a disturbing trend in the charity world. I had thought that charity began at home, with items being donated to these causes so that sales could be made to relieve the suffering of others. Boy, was I wrong! Now, before you start pointing out that the more money charged, means more money made for these charities, also consider that we are in a recession, and everything that is donated is FREE. Surely it would make more sense to follow the time honoured fashion of selling as cheaply as possible to the many, than to price yourself out of the market in order to sell to the few. In an age of bargain hunters, many people are now becoming disillusioned with charity shops. They seem to have forgotten that they are a CHARITY, not a business. Many benefit from reduced rents and rates, and have volunteers who give up their time to make the opening of shops possible, and it seems a bit like open mockery to charge higher prices. It almost smacks of greed. Also, to buy things off their sites on the Internet means adding postage costs, which drives the price higher still. When did charity become big business? I used to love trolling through the charity shops, for jewellery, clothes, nik-naks and the like, but now feel disappointed at the fact that I would be better off going to the car boot sales that are dotted around our county almost every weekend, where a bargain is far more likely to be had. So even though there are many charities to support, and many people who give up their time and donate their unwanted belongings, please remember that charity really DOES begin at home, not over the counter. The Despicable State Of Roads In Pembrokeshire!

B

eing a keen motorcylist in Pembrokeshire I’m regularly to be found venturing around our county and have often been left gobsmacked by the state of our county’s roads.... I’m not the most confident of bikers, definitely not a ‘Speed Demon’ or anything like that. And, although it may cause other road users to beep and get angry being slow has saved my neck more times than I care to remember. I’m amazed at how terrible a state our roads are allowed to be left in by the farming community. I’m a realist however and I understand that they need to plough fields, pick crops and all this involves mess. However, they must surely have a responsibility to keep Her Majesty’s Highways free from half a fields worth of soil that, thanks to our weather, quickly becomes a slippery streak of mud that endangers other road users! Praise Our Young People!

ear Sirs, following the recent rioting that has plagued Britain I really think our youngsters need praise for not copycatting the dreadful behaviour seen elsewhere.... In an age of Facebook and Twitter it’s very easy for a message and an idea to be spread around our country. Our amazing youngsters ignored peer-pressure to rise above teenagers and young adults from elsewhere in the country and not bring that despicable behaviour to our county. I think our youngsters are an amazing generation of respectful and proud individuals who aren’t afraid of pushing against the tide of anarchy and selfishness that washed over our nation in August. So a big ‘thank you’ to all our young people and don’t be afraid of being individuals and not following the herd! Anonymous.

LET US INTERTAIN YOU! Lord Of The Rings Movie Review

H

ave you ever watched a film series and been completely and totally entralled, awed and amazed by every single thing you get to see? I have thanks to The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.... Recently re-released on Blu-Ray is Peter Jackson’s epic film adaptation’s of J.R.R Tolkien’s literary masterpieces and, in this reviewers opinion, the film versions aren’t far from receiving the same high praise.

With every penny of the films vast budget clearly represented on screen, the film feels epic. The story is your basic Good v Bad affair with peace-loving Hobbit Frodo Baggins forced to journey across Middle-Earth to destroy a magical ring of terrible power. What blasts this film into the stratosphere is the stella casting of Sir Ian McKellen as the ancient wizard Gandalf, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Elijah Wood as wide-eyed Hobbit Frodo Baggins. As a fan of the books I cannot imagine anyone else playing any of the characters in these films, even Brad Dourif acts his socks off as relatively minor character Grima Wormtongue.....

Music Review

F

ew bands ever get to create a new genre of music and watch it slowly take over the world. Say what you will about Annie Lennox and Dave Lloyd but their contribution to music cannot be underestimated....

If you can see past the androgynous image then you’re in for a real treat. Including such hits as ‘Sweet Dreams’ and ‘Love Is A Strange’ their ice-cold synth hits come thick and fast. About mid-way through this collection I found myself in awe of Annie Lennox, her voice cuts through the cold, and sometimes sterile, electronica and delivers a deep almost soulful performance that connects with the listener on a level I haven’t experienced since soul legend Aretha Franklin.

12

Peter Jackson

The story keeps a great pace throughout the trilogy and you don’t feel the films are 3+ hours long EACH as the time seems to fly by.

No Good v Evil story would be worth it’s wait without fighting. And there’s lots. Some of it can be bloody so this isn’t necessarily a film for small children. The Helms Deep battle from ‘The Two Towers’ is a high point. The tension slowly builds and you genuinely feel disheartened for our heroes as they face a never-ending army of Uruk-Hai hell-bent on their annihilation. If you haven’t seen these films you NEED to, I can’t stress that enough. If you have seen them then the new re-mastered Blu-Ray edition will bring you back to Middle-Earth with a 1080p inspired crash. And don’t forget that christmas 2012 will bring us another Jackson-helmed Tolkien adaptation: The Hobbit.

Eurythmics: Greatest Hits As the album progresses you’ll hear Lennox’s haunting voice call out on amazing tracks like ‘Who’s That Girl’ or ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’. Changing music stylings nearly every song you’ll hear countryinspired tracks. No matter what track you’re listening to you’re hearing two musical icons express themselves whilst toying with different musical styles throughout. This 63 minute long experience is a great way to dip a toe into the careers of Lennox and Lloyd at their most influential and artistic. Whilst a few classics are missing you’ll still find enough to appeal to newcomers and long-term fans alike. A must add to any music lovers record collection.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Square-Enix

repare yourselves for a gaming, no, a HUMAN REVOLUTION, as Deus-Ex finally makes an appearance on the current generation of gaming consoles and PC.

Set 25 years before the much-praised original Deus-Ex in a futuristic world of human augmentation and nanomachines enhanced super-soldiers. The year is 2027 and you play Adam Jensen, an employee of Sarif Industries who is horrifically injured in an attack on his workplace. Augmented and given back the arms he lost in the attack he finds himself at the centre of a conspiracy involving shady government forces, humanist protestors and violent attacks and demonstrations. The game is a mixture of third and first person shooting and really helps you feel a part of the world as, with bullets flying over your head, you take cover behind an overturned table and the camera moves outside of your character so you can survey the enemies ahead.

Your whole body is a weapon, you can slash, burn and fight enemies with augmentations to your body. Having robotic arms means you also have amazing strength and can even punch through walls. The fighting looks fluid and feels effortless. It’s not all shooting as there are deep stealth sections requiring thought and patience. Not to mention a world as rich and as real as RPG’s like Oblivion and you’re looking at a tremendous return-to form for Deus-Ex. Add to the mix a great Blade Runner inspired soundtrack and Deus Ex suddenly begins turning heads and standing out from the crowd. Get ready to step into the future with Square-Enix.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is released on August 26th 2011!

But the true ‘stand-out’ features of this game isn’t the run-of-the-mill FPS. It’s how the augmentations change your body and the world around you. From super sight to accuracy enhancers, you really can customise Adam Jensen to your own unique way of playing....

Knowledge of Angels Jill Paton Walsh

et in an era around the 15th century, on a Mediterranean island, Knowledge of Angels centres around two very different people. One is a man from a distant land who survived a ship wreck. The other, a young girl raised by wolves.

Book Review

With Twilight Books

And you do genuinely fear for two people that, thanks to the author, you have gotten to know and understand. Walsh writes beautifully, and creates a tale of passion and poignancy, which will leave you both enriched and bereft.

Put this on your reading list!

The Church is intrigued by both these characters, and sets out to examine them both in an attempt to understand faith, or lack of it, with or without prior knowledge. This book explores attitudes to faith in a disturbingly close representation of our own world. The desire to believe that faith is innate holds you within the pages, whilst also allowing for the debate that man should be able to believe whatever he wants, without fear of judgement from those whose beliefs are central to their lives. However, the arrival of the Inquisition heralds an end to discussion and challenges and drives fear into the reader.

ondering where to Stay, Eat, Go, Shop or looking for a local business service in Pembrokeshire? Why not start your search with the great local experts at www.wheretoinpembrokeshire.co.uk....

The Story In 2009 Husband and wife team Andy and Laura Pearce started a business that that would enable them to achieve all their goals - to work together, achieve a great work life balance, and be financially secure in the future. With seven children under the age of 10 including a new baby and a 1 year old finding the solution was not easy. However, with Andy’s 15 year Corporate IT and Finance background and Laura’s successful Sales and Marking career behind them it didn’t take long to find a concept! Just how quickly it would all happen was a shock, and now with a full time nanny the happy duo are looking to recruit 2 business managers within the next 3 months and there are smiles all round.

To stop the sites being just another corporate directory listing the concept was to utilise local knowledge and recommendations alongside a unique nearby listings system for each listing to make the website more personal feeling and relevant. The website is also bright and clean looking and deliberately avoids clutter and pop-ups to make a pleasant browsing experience. The other main concept was to utilise the fact that most people now search online for the majority of their needs and achieving a high ranking in the search engines, especially Google was vital to get businesses noticed on the website. The site uses sophisticated Site Engine Optimisation to achieve page one Google rankings for our advertisers on many keywords. “Building long term business relationships with our clients and listening to their feedback whilst always continuing to improve the sites is key to the long run success of the business” explains Laura. Andy goes on to describes why the concept is unique and how it works for the user:

The Concept Born from two observations. Firstly often small businesses struggle to get noticed on search engines and thus get overlooked. Secondly, when people are doing research into where to Stay, Eat, Go, or find other things in a specific area no single site seems to combine it all in a complimentary way. Thus the www.whereto... concept began. The parent website is www.wheretoinwales.co.uk, and in time each region in Wales will have its very own www.whereto...website with its own Regional Business Manager heading up a team of sales and account managers to ensure that a local touch is maintained. The concept for the web site is to promote tourism, leisure and other business services in each region offering both tourists and residents a reference site when they need to find places to STAY, EAT, GO, SHOP and OTHER STUFF – and helping local businesses promote their services locally and nationally.

“For example if you are looking to book a holiday cottage you can also look for nearby restaurants, places to go, fun things to do with the kids, walks, activities etc to enhance your stay. All the information whilst available in the usual ‘list of results’ is also displayed on a large Google map allowing the user to clearly see everything available nearby in a very complimentary way” Clients already enjoying advertising on the Pembs site include Battlefield Live, Celtic Quest Coasteering, Quality Cottages, West Wales Cottages, Wales Holidays, Upsy Daizy, to name few. PEMBROKESHIRE’S HIDDEN TREASURES

D

DALE AND MARLOES

ale and Marloes, located in the South West tip of the National Park, may not be the most well known spots in Pembrokeshire, but both of these villages have a lot more to offer than may appear at first glance. Dale

In 1603, Dale was described as a ‘borough in decay’. Now, over 400 years later, this could not be further from the truth. Dale has a thriving community spirit, which includes an amateur dramatics society and an active Women’s Institute. There is also a village shop, a café and most importantly, a buzzing pub that serves delicious local food and ale. The more adventurous of you won’t be disappointed with the amount of activities that are on offer for such a small village. There is a yacht club, a water sports centre, a rowing club and Westdale beach for the ‘gnarly’ surfers. There are also island sea safari excursions, which leave from the Dale pontoon and St Martin’s Haven near Marloes village. When visiting Dale, water sports may seem like the obvious attraction, but if squeezing into a wetsuit does not appeal, the Coronation Hall often hosts local exhibitions. Alternatively, you may have to just settle for a pint of beer or some delicious local food overlooking the Haven. On a summer’s day in Dale, you are most likely to see fishermen bringing in a fresh catch, children catching crabs off the pontoon, or sailing enthusiasts competing in a dinghy race. If you are really, really lucky and happen to be there on a bank holiday, when the locals like to party (just a little), you may even be privileged enough to witness a spontaneous tug of war on the beach.

Marloes

Undoubtedly my favourite thing about Marloes, is Marloes Sands; a remote unspoiled beach just a mile away from the village. Despite the fact that this beach has previously been described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Britain, it is still un-crowded all year round, and even in the school summer holidays you can find a private area to set up camp for the day. In the winter, Marloes Sands is also a great beach for the surfers, although be prepared for a long walk down from the car park. Like Dale, Marloes village also has a lot to offer. There is a pub and a couple of fantastic places to eat, or to have a decent cup of coffee. For those of you wanting a bit of culture, there is an art gallery and a village ‘Clock Tower’ (erected in 1904), which is definitely worth a look if you are visiting.

How to get there

Dale – If travelling by car from Haverfordwest, take Dale Road (B4327) all the way from Haverfordwest to Dale. Sat Nav postcodes - SA62 3RB for Dale, or SA62 3RL for Westdale. Marloes – If travelling by car, again take Dale Road (B4327) from Haverfordwest. Travel roughly 11 miles before turning off right, where it is signposted to Marloes Village. Sat Nav postcodes - SA62 3AZ for Marloes Village, SA62 3BH for Marloes Sands, or SA62 3BJ for Martin’s Haven. The Puffin Shuttle – Bus Route 315 conveniently stops off at both Dale and Marloes Village.

PARANORMAL

PEMBROKESHIRE

I

nterest in ghosts and the supernatural is not a modern phenomenon, in fact as long as man has lived he has been haunted and visited by ghosts, spirits, devils, fairies and a whole host of otherworldly beings. Pembrokeshire has more than its fair share of supernatural and this is reflected in the many stories and accounts that have thrilled or frightened its residents for hundreds of years; in the 11th century local boy Gerald of Wales gives several accounts of witchcraft, devilry and ghostly goings on taking place in the county of his birth. Over the centuries that followed, many others have added to the wealth of supernatural folklore and tales. The well attested haunting of H.M.S Asp in Milford Haven, terrifying encounters with fearsome black dogs throughout the county and the numerous sightings of phantom funeral processions barely scratch the surface of the many and varied accounts of the Paranormal in Pembrokeshire. One of the most famous and oft repeated stories is that of the Tenby Corpse Candle and the following was contributed to the Pembrokeshire County Guardian on May 11th, 1901 by Mr. Joseph Davies of Clynderwen: Sir. It happened not many miles from Tenby where a certain young school mistress lodged at a farmhouse where she was very happy in every respect. One night after retiring to rest, the light having been put out and she was lying awake, she suddenly noticed a peculiar greyish light like a little star moving towards the foot of her bed from the doorway. The light came to a standstill by her bed and gently lowered to her feet. Almost paralysed with fear, she called with all her strength for help and in a few minutes the whole of the household were together in the room listening in amazement to the frightened girl’s story. All sorts of means were used to pacify her and to induce her to go to sleep but without avail. She would not stay in the room for the world and her bed had to be removed and fixed on a temporary bedstead in the room where the mistress slept.

18

With

Steve Parsons

Time passed and the story spread abroad; some made light of it and some looked serious and all tried to get the young lady to shake off all thoughts of it. But to no purpose - let them laugh or chaff, she bore the same sad expression and said something would certainly follow to clear up the mystery. About six weeks or so had passed and on one night the mistress, who was a strong healthy woman suddenly took ill, and quite unexpectedly died. The young schoolmistress happened at the same time to be away on her holidays and on hearing the sad news, she hurried back to attend the funeral. When she arrived at the house she was taken upstairs to see the body. She again became almost paralysed on finding that the corpse had been laid out on the spare bedstead on the very spot where she had six weeks previously pointed out where the light had lowered and disappeared. No one had thought of the incident until reminded of it. The body had been laid out there for convenience at the time; no one ever thought of the young lady’s fright until she now pointed it out herself. So after that, it can be easily imagined the whole neighbourhood became convinced that there was something in it after all, and the old superstition got strengthened in the minds of the young people that it remains to a great extent to the present time

The 'Canwyll Corph' or 'Corpse Candle' is a frequent death portent which had frequently been reported throughout west and mid Wales right up until the first half of the 20th Century. I don't have any modern reports of people sighting corpse candles in Pembrokeshire or for that matter anywhere in Wales have they been snuffed out for ever?

The Phoenix from the flames of review sites Alex Small, CEO, Trust Mico Ltd

F

or many years I have been frustrated by review sites. I, like many, have used these websites to gauge which hotels, pubs or restaurants I am less likely to have a life-threatening experience in but, whilst doing so, I have always been uncomfortable trusting the opinions of complete strangers that I know nothing about. If my sister was to describe a hotel as cluttered, I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole as she is the most disorganised person in the Western hemisphere. If my (slightly OCD) wife was to describe a hotel as cluttered, it wouldn’t phase me in the slightest. The same goes for “a bit pricey” – what does that mean if you don’t know if that person is an eighteen year old student or a multi-millionaire? The simple truth is: if you don’t know the slightest thing about someone how can you possibly assume that their comments are relevant to you? I have therefore found it very interesting to see the considerable scrutiny that Tripadvisor, in particular, has come under in recent years. But, when I started looking in to the research surrounding this field, I discovered that the problems people have in using these sites go way beyond the issues of fraudulent reviews, libellous comments and countless hours of trawling the net. The main stumbling block is actually us, the human being. The stem of the problem lies with what is termed “The Negativity Bias”. John Cacioppo, Ph.D, of Ohio State University, studied our reactions to images that were known to cause positive feelings, negative feelings and neutral feelings. He demonstrated that our brains are 5 times more stimulated by negative imagery than positive imagery. Baumeister et al suggest that the reason that bad is strongly than the good is based on our evolutionary instinct to survive. They suggest that creatures that didn’t concentrate more on the bad would generally have overlooked lifethreatening situations and become extinct.

It is this need to survive and to protect our species that causes great harm to businesses. Not only does it make people 5 times more likely to remember (and therefore write about) their negative experiences rather than their positive ones, it makes them need to see 5 good reviews to outweigh the psychological impact of one negative one. What’s more, the more emotional the purchase, such as booking the hotel for your honeymoon, the more powerful the negative reviews become. Is it really surprising, therefore, that perfectly honest hoteliers have resorted to dishonestly writing their own good reviews as a way of evening up the balance? I started to think that there must be a fairer way to provide useful information to consumers that doesn’t harm good businesses. Also, having never felt the inclination to write a review in my life, I wanted to find a simpler system that didn’t mean I had to spend ten minutes at a computer to generate the data. The answer came in June 2010, when Microsoft and Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducted a survey of 624 people to see what they used their social networks for. By far the most popular request was for recommendations (at 29%), next was opinions (at 22%). It became obvious that people don’t actually want countless review sites giving them opinions from total strangers. What they really want is recommendations from people they know and trust. Cue www.trustmico.com. Launched on 18th July 2011, our philosophy for the site is quite simple: provide people with the UK’s largest business directory, let them search for, find and recommend the businesses they like. By allowing them to import their existing social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn and email contacts), they can then share these recommendations with people they know. In return for these powerful personal endorsements, businesses are happy to offer great incentives and rewards for their customers. Trust Mico provides a balance where both businesses and consumers can benefit, all in the positive environment of recommendations from people we trust.

Good Eating In Pembrokeshire

F

or my anniversary with my long suffering girlfriend, I wanted to do something different. After much deliberation I decided to book a room for the night, and a meal in the A la Carte Ivory Restaurant in The Plas Hyfryd Hotel in Narbeth.... Pulling up to the Plas we were met with an imposing Georgian building with a sense of history and grandeur. Entering through the doors; the main reception was also stunning, a high ceiling hallway oozing charm and history, leading to the sweeping stairway at the bottom where the staff waited to book us in. We were shown in to the restaurant. The Ivory reflects the history of the building with a modern twist, it’s spacious but, surprisingly, maintains an intimate feel. This was a perfect setting for our romantic celebration.

So we decided to have a desert to finish of the evening, and we ordered the Assiette of chocolate, and the warm banana bread slice. I think it was disappointing after the main course, but still delicious all the same. It may be unfair to say disappointing as had the mains not been so spectacular then these dishes would have been delightful in their own right. So an amazing evening all in all, the only real disappointment was the time waiting for my drink refills, but the atmosphere of the whole restaurant, the comfort and style of the hotel and the courteous friendly staff mad this an experience we heartily recommend, and will definitely be booking here again, infact we are currently looking at booking our wedding here.....

Orders placed soon the Starters came out, for me the Sesame Crusted Fishcakes, with spring Onion Tartar sauce and a sweet chilli dressing. My partner had opted for the Wild Mushroom tartlet with confit garlic, cheddar crust and white truffle dressing. My fishcakes were perfectly sized, packed a powerful flavour, and the dressing had just enough bite, whilst not being overpowering as is so easily done. The mushroom tart was the star though, crisp pastry, an amazing flavour from the mushrooms and the truffle just gave it that edge, definitely what I would order in future. Then on to the main attraction. We had both opted for the ‘surf and turf’ an intriguing offering Medallion of Beef Fillet, Boudin of Braised Chuck, SautĂŠ Tiger Prawns with Roasted Garlic, Rosemary & Sea Salt After a slight wait, which was a bit disappointing, our food was delivered and the impact when brought to the table was enough to delight the senses. The aroma of the garlic and rosemary was mouth-watering, presentation was special, it was almost too good to eat, but needs must! The individual aspects of this dish, on their own, are good; tender beef, smooth chuck and plump juicy prawns. Each one deserved merit in their own right, but the combination of flavours when combined was what elevated the dish. A mind blowing explosion packed full of flavour, and a hard taste to beat.

he Pembrokeshire County Wedding Fair was initiated by a small group of businesses from the wedding industry and the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society. It was felt that something bigger was needed – to offer more choice to couples and reducing the number of Sundays that are spent at smaller wedding fairs! There was a strong sense of wanting to show that you could get everything you need for a wedding/ civil ceremony – or other big celebration – from Pembrokeshire and its borders. You can shop locally. With 100 or more stands, you will need to set aside some time for your visit. With that in mind, there are refreshments available: tea & coffee and pig roast rolls from Ken Davies, Crymych, all supporting the local charity The Paul Sartori Foundation (hospice at home). Entry is free, with a £300 entry prize draw: sponsored by Ocky White Travel, Haverfordwest; to be spent with an exhibitor/exhibitors. The Pembrokeshire County Wedding Fair is proof that if you want to have your wedding in west Wales and support local businesses, you have a wide choice of services to suit a broad range of budgets and styles, from formal to quirky. You will find practically everything needed for a perfect day, even mothers and guests are not forgotten. We may even surprise you with things that you haven’t thought of! Local businesses providing for your local wedding; the Pembrokeshire County Wedding Fair: possibly the biggest wedding fair in Wales‌and on YOUR doorstep.

We offer a wide range of beautiful designs and floral displays Helping to fulfil your every wish on your special day For outstanding quality and a full service second to none Call

ne may ask what is the point of a window lock, if someone can just throw a brick through the window? Its all about the risk of being seen, the noise of a breaking window, that may draw attention to anyone who may be in the area. The question is, can a burglar afford to take that chance?

On a casement window, consider the Era 809 window lock. When these units are clamped down hard and properly screwed into the frame, we have found the frame has given way, in some cases, before the lock has. At less than a tenner, these locks are well worth considering

Darrel Walters, founder of The Walters Group, has over 25 years experience in the security industry, from simple locks on cabinets to large scaled security projects.

When it comes to wooden Sash windows, one of our preferred choices of window lock is the Banham Rola lock. These can be found under the Sash window section of our website: www.locksonline.co.uk. Depending on how they are fitted, the window can be opened a few inches for ventilation.

Gas safety week 2011

eptember 12th sees the launch of the first ever Gas Safety Week run by Gas Safe Register. The aim of the week is to raise awareness of gas safety in the home.

Gas Safety Week aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these top tips to help keep you and your family gas safe: * make sure only a Gas Safe registered engineer works on your gas appliances * make sure gas appliances have a regular service and an annual gas safety check, * always check the engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card

As part of Gas Safety Week, Gas Safe Register is going around the country raising awareness of gas safety and giving out essential advice to help people keep safe in their homes. Many people buy gas appliances but we want to remind them that only a Gas Safe registered engineer should fit their appliance. Gas Safe Register is working with major gas appliance retailers B&Q and Comet to help raise awareness during Gas Safety Week, with events taking place in some of their stores across the country.
