embrokeshire is a big place. Not exactly “breaking

News” for our first issue but a challenge. If you live in Tenby you don’t always know what’s going on in St. Davids and vice versa. The advent and booming popularity of social media web sites like Facebook and Twitter have helped the people of Pembrokeshire share and interact like never before, but what if you languish in one of the many “not-spots” that pepper our county? What Pembrokeshire needs is a fast, efficient and inexpensive way to bring everyone together, to inform and entertain in equal measures. We need a way for the people of our county, from locals to welcomed tourists and visitors, to discover everything our county has that makes it the most amazing place to live, work and play. This publication bridges that gap, we want to bring people together with a magazine that embraces all that Pembrokeshire is, was and wants to be. Where we go from here is up to you. This is YOUR Pembrokeshire after all, so enjoy it.... Shaun Sables Your Pembrokeshire Editor

The Black Sheep

O

ne of the most imposing buildings in Haverfordwest hides a culinary delight. Behind the Shire Hall’s facade lies one of the best dining experiences I have had on my gastronomic journey around the county. Nestled on the first floor is a rustic restaurant; without any stuffy airs or graces, just charm and style. With a menu focused on freshness, home grown produce and local dishes. Plus a daily change means there is always something new and fresh to sample. I’ve been a patron of The Black Sheep since their humble beginnings as a small intimate restaurant on the High St, their food to me has always been a triumph. What has let them down on occasion has been the service.

THE BELLEVUE All Day Sunday Lunch Afternoon & Evening Menu’s Warm Welcome Children Catered For Ample Car Parking Full English Breakfast Lunches Served Noon - 2:30pm

After deciding to revisit, I was pleasantly surprised. Their food offering is as delicious as ever, though they seemed to have lost the twice cooked chips, but the improvement in the service was 10 fold. I have since been informed the have a new Maitre De, and he seems to know his stuff. All the staff where attentive to our needs and nothing was too much trouble. They seem to have got the mix right, from the fantastic mix of fresh dishes, a great selection of steaks, which I must admit when I do visit that is what I head for, to the fish dishes that my partner loves so much. We have on occasion taken the children, and their offering of burgers and pizzas has been more than enough to keep my young ones happy. The atmosphere is relaxed, they seemed to have hit the nail on the head with the service at last, and the food is top notch – all wrapped into an affordable price! And, if the staff are reading this; well done, keep it up and remember the front of house is just as important as the food – oh and get those chips back!

Have-A-Go-Hero!

VENTURE JET St. Davids Peninsula, Pembrokeshire The cold wind of the Irish Sea (and a bit of spray) hits me in the face as Tim opens the throttle of the boat and we tear towards Ramsey Island. But it’s OK, we’re learning things.... The chance to speed around the breathtaking coastline of Pembrokeshire was far too good . miss. My only concern was that I’d never e even set foot upon a boat before, the nearest i I’d ever been to one was a long soak in the b bath!

As we turned for home this gave Tim the chance to really open the boat up, and the adrenalin junkie in me comes alive. We do some high banking turns and the salty spray of the sea strikes my face as he slams the brakes on! I really enjoyed my time with Tim and the Venture Jet crew. Not only did I get to see and experience a side of Pembrokeshire I had no idea about, but I also got to learn AND get an adrenalin fix along the way while feeling totally safe and comfortable. Venture Jet truly has something for all the family to enjoy. By Andy Chandler

But Tim put me at my ease, he’s clearly an experienced professional with a passion for boats and the extraordinary wildlife of Ramsey Island. I did get a bit worried when we began to venture into some of the caves that eat into the island, but his experience shone through and we emerged from the cave safe, sound and with a head FULL of new information about the local population of Seals. Oh yes, it’s not just a pleasure cruise or a spin around on a boat. You’re actively learning, watching and encouraged to ask questions about any and every aspect of the Ramsey Island ecosystem. Tim regales us with tales of them driving cows and pigs out to the remote island and his sense of humour and knowledge turn this tale into a full blown saga as he describes the dangers that would’ve been present. As we sped around a corner Tim spotted something and the roar of the engines died immediately. We were presented with a gang of Porpoises swimming around in the surf. They couldn’t have been more than 10 feet away from us! I was amazed at the wealth of wildlife that clings to the face of the sea-worn cliffs of Ramsey Island....

Pembrokeshire’s Hidden Treasures

B

Barafundle Bay

arafundle Bay on the Pembrokeshire Heritage Coast of South Wales, is a remote stretch of soft, golden sand and clear water, that can only be reached via a cliff path and then a steep descent through woodlands and dunes. Now owned by the National Trust, it adjoins the trust’s Stackpole Estate, once home to the Earls of Cawdor. A Cafe near the carpark offers traditional fayre, with toilet facilities, before the short walk around to the beach. A pathway leads (via steps) over the headland east towards the bay. Keep to the path as there are cows! This unspoiled beach is a “Jewel in the crown” of Pembrokeshire and well worth the trip to experience the tranquility of the area. By foot The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes between Bosherston and Freshwater East via Stackpole Quay. Footpaths lead from Stackpole village out across the estate. By bike Stackpole is 6 miles south of Pembroke via on-road cycle routes. The Coastal Cruiser shuttle bus carries bicycles. There are also cycle racks in all National Trust car parks on the estate. By bus 387 Coastal Cruiser shuttle bus takes a circular route from Pembroke, close to railway station, stopping at all the coastal highlights: Freshwater West, Broadhaven South, Bosherton Lily Ponds, Stackpole Quay and Freshwater East. For a timetable go to Pembrokeshire Greenways By road B4319 south of Pembroke. For Stackpole Quay and Barafundle, follow signs through Stackpole village. For Bosherston Lakes and Broadhaven South, follow signs to Bosherston. For Freshwater West, follow signs through Castlemartin. Large coaches may have problems getting to Stackpole Quay and Broadhaven South due to winding single lane roads.

Get on your

High Horse

O

ur new monthly article aims to give YOU, the people of Pembrokeshire, the chance to get anything off of your chest; from local politics to congestion and anything inbetween. For our first ‘High Horse’ we’ve turned to the “Save Haroldston House’ campaign.... Pembrokeshire has a vast and glorious history, from the ancient burial mound of Pentre-Ifan to the battlements of Carew Castle. Like it or not this county wears it past on it’s sleeve with pride. While local authorities and CADW do their best to preserve as many buildings, castles and churches as possible; some seem to have sadly been overlooked or forgotten. I’m talking mainly about Haroldston House; a 13th century mansion built by the Harolds family and later the birthplace of local patron, and early Haverfordwest benefactor, Sir John Perrot. This is a building so forgotten that some residents of Merlins Bridge never even knew that was the name of the sad-looking ruin that occupies Clay Lanes. Once described as having “some of the most glorious gardens in Tudor Wales” the mansion is now a ruin (no thanks to the Pakington family who brought the building in the 17th century and began a long demolition and reclamation process on the site!) and is slowly rotting and collapsing down on itself as the aged and unsupported structure finally gives in to the ravages of time. As a proud and vocal supporter of local history I think we all have a responsibility to demand that relics like Haroldston House, Fort Hubberstone and the Wesleyan Chapel on Barn Street are all preserved and secured for future generations to dip a toe into the varied and glorious past of our county! These campaigns need and rely on YOUR support to help protect these ancient buildings and to help get them the preservation they sorely need....

10

So, how can you help campaigns like “Save Haroldston House” and “Save Fort Hubberston”? A quick Facebook or Google search will bring up their pages and you’ll be introduced to a passionate group of people striving to bring local history back to the forefront. On their pages you’ll find links to petitions that give YOU the chance to speak directly to the powers that be and demand that our heritage is here for us to pass on to our children and grandchildren.

If you can offer these groups support or guidance PLEASE get in contact with them. As mentioned they are fiercely passionate about the heritage of Pembrokeshire and angry at the “powers-that-be” for sitting back and watching whilst the most iconic and important structures we have are ignored to the point of collapse or destruction by redevelopment. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Andy Chandler - andy@allmme.com

The Riverside Market

T

he Riverside Market, overlooking the river Cleddau, is open six days a week and across an attractive wooden footbridge is the Riverside Quay Development, a pedestrianised tree-lined boulevard offering all the latest high street shops. The Indoor Market has seen a resurgence and influx of new business as well as the more familiar traders. From The Animal Welfare Shop, Moonshyne, Cherry Tree Products, Penny Readwin Jewellery, Terminal Records, The Flower Shop, Time is, through to Haverfordwest Model Centre, Brewers Army Surplus, Dee Dees This and That, Albert Rees Butchers and many more! And dont forget the superb Cafe! The market manager, Mike Lyford, is keen for the market to be put back on the map as one of the “must see” places in the county town. He says - “Surprisingly, even though we’ve been here in the current building since 1982, there are still people asking where we are! - We have a lot to offer and would love to see more people using and shopping in the facilities.” Many of you may have visited the market in recent years when many of the stands were closed. Now it is a vibrant centre with new faces. It really is a small community within the county town of Haverfordwest and well worth a visit to see what it now has to offer.

Let us INtertain you! Blade Runner Ridley Scott

Movie Review

B

lade Runner recently topped a poll for ‘Best Sci-Fi Film Ever’ run by Total Film. It just pipped The Empire Strikes Back, and there’s a reason why not even the franchise power of Star Wars could persevere against the longevity and scope of this sci-fi classic. Quality.

Rutger Hauer, in a career defining performance, plays the Replicant antagonist Roy Batty. His heartfelt ‘Tears in the rain’ speech still moves me to this day.

From the first moment the Vangelis score picks you up and shows you the dark, dank and depressing world of Los Angeles in 2019 you’re thrown into a world that feels so real. A world of infinite questions and few answers.

The film reeks of the noir genre. The darkly lit, brooding actors, music and script will keep you on the edge of you seat as a rich and involving plot unfurls around you. It brings up questions on religion, existence and the sacredness of life.

This is truly Ridley Scott’s masterpiece, a fine and intricately woven film it relies on atmospheric shots and a hauntingly beautiful score that really sets the tone for the film. Not one part of this futuristic dystopia feels forced, wrong or out of place (OK, except the voice over which has been happily dropped from the final cut!).

So watch Blade Runner, but don’t expect an adrenalin fuelled thrill ride, this isn’t The Fifth Element, this is true, unashamed and glorious science fiction film making given a blank cheque and the direction of a film maker at his artistic and imaginative peak.

Harrison Ford delivers an underated performance as “Blade Runner” Rick Deckard, brought back into an LAPD over-run by escaped androids called Replicants.

Dark Side Of The Moon Pink Floyd

ark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered a new by each generation of rock listeners.

I bought this album having no idea what to expect other than the fact that it was made in 1973 and the artist Pink Floyd was a progressive rock group.

This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn’t rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like “On the Run,” “Time” and especially “Money” (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques.

42 minutes and 10 seconds later I was left speechless, blown away, and in utter amazement. This album left me almost with a whole new outlook on life. The lyrics, vocals, instruments, performances... mind blowing. Track 3 “Time” in my opinion may just be the absolute single greatest recording I have ever heard. 7:06 of musical brilliance and genius. In conclusion, “Dark Side Of The Moon” is to music what “The Godfather” is to movies. An epic, timeless, must-have CD.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Bethesda Softworks

Game Preview

O

nce every 5-6 years the amazing guys at Bethesda unleash a game, no a masterpiece, upon the unsuspecting members of the public. Come November any serious fan of games will become a recluse as they venture into the northern province of Tamriel: Skyrim. The previous volume of The Elder Scrolls series consumed about 1000 hours of my life as I spent the best part of 3 years raiding ancient tombs, fighting demonic lords and trying to save a world I actually found myself caring about. Skyrim promises more of the same. The attention to detail, the sheer scale of Skyrim and the graphics engine have all been vastly improved over ‘Oblivion’ and this is looking like an instant classic and, I’m sure, a day one purchase for any serious gamer. So make a note of a VERY special date: 11/11/11, book your holidays (or start planning an illness), clear your diary and prepare to be immersed in a world that you won’t be able to tear yourself away from...... oh, and we forgot to mention the dragons!

The Circuit Bob Shepherd

Book Review Twilight Books

B

ob Shepherd was a member of the SAS for 20 years. After his retirement, a dyed in the wool soldier, he joined a private security company operating in the most dangerous places in the world: Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

With

The Circuit is a compelling read, and bravely shows not only the true face of war, but also the people really affected by these conflicts. There is far more to these wars than could ever be imagined, and Shepherd skillfully demonstrates that what you read in the paper is not always to be believed.

He became a security advisor, assisting news crews as they brought the world coverage of the wars that were raging in these areas. His experiences left him a changed man, and his book exposes the virtually unknown world of private security companies operating in the most hostile of territories. Along with members of the news teams, local guides and other former soldiers; he met some of the most dangerous men in the world. Including coming face to face with the Taliban, and documents his brush with the well documented ‘Bravo Two Zero’ fiasco....

What are QR codes? They look like this:

They come to us from Japan where they are very common. QR is short for Quick Response (they can be read quickly by newer mobile phones). They are used to take a piece of information from media and put it in to your mobile phone. You’ll soon see QR Codes in a magazine advert, on a poster, a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt. Once it is in your mobile phone, it’ll give you details about that business or organisation, or details about the person wearing the t-shirt, show you a web site where you can watch a YouTube clip, or it may give you a coupon which you can use in a local outlet. The reason why they are more useful than a standard barcode is that they can store (and digitally present) much more data, including web site links, geographic coordinates, and text. The other key feature of QR Codes is that instead of requiring a chunky handheld scanner to scan them, many modern mobile phones can scan them. How does your mobile phone read the code? Your mobile phone needs a QR code reader, usually downloadable free from your phone provider. It takes literally 1 minute for someone with an iPhone or Android phone to find and install the reader. How do you generate a code? You can easily generate a QR code using a site like Kaywa.com. Google also has a tool. How can you use QR codes to benefit you

Will your customers use them? Today, few may use them, but those that do will certainly appreciate your tech knowledge, and those that don’t will certainly be inquisitive, which may open the door for conversation and a potential sale. Those that do use QR codes will definitely have a high tech know-how and may be more receptive to your presence on the web, your Twitter presence, Facebook, YouTube etc. How could you use a QR code? Your business, no matter how small or large, could use QR codes in a number of ways. You might auto generate one next to every product on your web site containing all the product details, the number to call and the URL link to the page so they can show their friends on their mobile phone. You could add one to your business card containing your contact details so its easy for someone to add you to their contacts on their mobile phone. Add them to any print advertising, flyers, posters, invites, containing: • Product details • Contact details • Offer details • Event details • Competition details • A coupon • Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook pages • A link to your YouTube video • Whatever you imagination can come up with!

AllMMe Ltd actively promote QR Codes and believes it will add value to your business or organisation. It may be short lived, but the curiosity factor alone will make this a talking point with your Customers and potential Customers. Give us a call to discuss how this technology, and relatively cheap marketing tool, can help you.

We are only just scratching the surface of how they will be used. Your imagination is as far as they can be taken! Here are a few examples of how others are using them. A business card with all your details on that automatically creates a contact in your phone. Promoting a web site in your shop window. Your opening hours and contact telephone number in your next advertisement. More details about a product or service that the end user can take away with them to read later....

Beyond The Veil with:

O

ne of the main goals of Pembrokeshire Beyond is to investigate various local legends and ghost stories and try to get an idea of exactly how haunted West Wales really is... Having grown up in the area we were constantly hearing ghostly yarns ranging from duelling ghosts at Fort Hubberstone to a ghostly apparition several motorists have believed they’ve struck with their cars while driving into Steynton late at night. A lot of these stories must be taken with a grain of salt, however we really believe that where there’s smoke there’s fire and that something has instigated these stories in the first place. We’ve been lucky enough to investigate a lot of older buildings right in the heart of our county’s main town; Haverfordwest. We’ve spent many an eerie evening searching such places as Minnies Nitespot and Eddies Sports Bar for evidence of the paranormal and, although those cases are still open, we firmly believe we’ve caught some unexplainable phenomena on camera already. In Minnies we ran into the spirit of a mysterious male called ‘Jack’ that two “sensitives” picked up on independently of each other and in Eddie’s we believe we’ve caught a ghostly footstep during a lone vigil....

We’re on a constant and never-ending quest to uncover the facts and the truth behind hauntings, spooks, spectres and reported apparitions. We have been mislead in the past and visited locations to uncover more information about ghostly tales and reports only to discover they were created by now ex-owners to try and draw more punters and thereby increase their income. This is obviously highly frustrating and really flies in the face of what we at Pembrokeshire Beyond are trying to do. However we do have questions about our county's reported hauntedness; why do we hear countless stories of Fort Hubberstone's troubled spirits when there is only ONE reported death that has EVER taken place there and not more reports from Puncheston about the crashed Liberator that killed 6 airmen during W.W.II? We're not trying to belittle or write-off Fort Hubberstone as haunted at all, we just know that sometimes a haunted reputation doesn't take more than 2-3 drunk teenagers who spook each other out for that building to be tarnished as "Haunted" forevermore. So, how haunted is West Wales? From a paranormal investigators point of view; we don't know enough to have anything definitive yet, we haven't proven 1/100th of the stories we hear as being anything paranormal. BUT we hear stories every week about hauntings. So we believe Pembrokeshire is haunted, we just need your help to prove it! If you have ever experienced anything ghostly in Pembrokeshire please email your experiences to

School Report SECTOR LEADING PRACTICE AT MOUNT AIREY

I

n a recent Estyn Inspection report (December 2010) Mount Airey’s Foundation Phase practice was evaluated as ‘sector leading.’ The school was awarded a judgement of excellent in four key areas out of a total of five Within the Inspection report pupils’ attainment levels at the school are described as ‘exceptional.’ The report notes ‘Overall children’s communication skills are exceptional and most pupils confidently apply their communication, numeracy and ICT skills securely in a range of contexts. The quality of children’s writing for example is often exceptional as are children’s speaking and listening skills.’ Provision for pupils with Additional Learning Needs was described as ‘excellent.’ Standards in Leadership and Management were evaluated as ‘excellent’ with the management structure throughout the school identified as a particular strength. The school has been asked to submit two case studies to Estyn which will be used to disseminate these models of excellent practice in schools across Wales. The first case study describes the robust and rigorous monitoring of skills in Mount Airey to inform future planning to drive up standards of attainment. The second case study outlines pupils’ involvement in their own learning experiences and in shaping the ethos of Mount Airey and how this impacts on pupils’ standards. Mrs. Cora O’Brien the Head Teacher acknowledged the tremendous contribution of all stakeholders the pupils, the parents, the staff, the volunteers and the Governing Body in promoting excellent standards in all aspects of Mount Airey’s practice. She emphasised that the school’s prospects for improvement were evaluated as ‘excellent’. Everybody within the school community has the highest expectations for each individual child to enable him/her to maximise his/her unique potential by achieving the highest possible standards in all areas of learning. She acknowledged the significant role of the pupils in shaping the ethos of the school and in ensuring that Mount Airey is an excellent school. Mrs. O’Brien noted that the school motto “Where Children Come First” captures the child-centred nature of the ethos at the school and informs all of its stakeholders consistently and effectively in all aspects of their practice.

New Online Service Promoting Leisure on the Haven A brand new tourism service offering a full online booking facility has just been launched to promote businesses and events around the Milford Haven waterway, and it’s free!

T

he interactive website www.pembrokeshiremarinegroup.com/whats-on is attracting businesses who can see the advantage of having a dedicated service to promote leisure on the Haven. “We’re using the site to promote our RYA courses to boat owners. We hope it will reach a different type of customer who might not otherwise have used us.” said Jane Sadler, Marketing Manager at Pembrokeshire Activity Centre at Pembroke Dock. “I found the site very straight-forward to use and I’m not particularly IT savvy. It was just a case of clicking on buttons and filling in boxes. It was quick too, I uploaded an event in 2 or 3 minutes with pictures.” said Jane. ’I only have to pay a very, very reasonable commission when someone books, other than that, it’s free. The site is another good marketing platform’ she said. The site automatically updates businesses with email alerts to let them know a booking has been made and at the same time, sends the customers their e-ticket. Customers can relax knowing their payments are being processed securely through PayPal. It’s backed by Pembrokeshire Marine Group, which manages Milford Marina on behalf of Milford Haven Port Authority. For more information contact Anna Malloy on 01646 695156 or visit: www.Pembrokeshiremarinegroup.com/whats-on

Milford Marina turns 20!

M

ilford Marina is 20 years old this month, and along with the celebrations there’s lots of new and exciting developments happening at the marina for everyone to enjoy from sailors to shoppers! To celebrate its 20th anniversary the Marina is holding a weekend of celebrations on 20th and 21st August. Saturday will be a family day open to all visitors with children’s entertainment and stalls along Nelson Quay and Sunday will be a continuation of the celebrations. Local businesses will also be offering promotions and joining in the fun. The event is to say thank you to all those that have supported and contributed to Milford Marina over the last 20 years Bright Future The marina is growing with some exciting new plans for everyone in Pembrokeshire. Pembrokeshire Marine Group (PMG), which manages the marina for Milford Haven Port Authority, is looking for dynamic and growing businesses to join the developing marine community at the marina. This community will take the form of a Marine Village which, aims to include an angling shop, watersports equipment outlet, diving shop, charter companies, yacht sales and marine finance and insurance. We want to ensure yachtsmen have every provision they could possibly need at hand, from chandleries to sail makers and yacht builders to yacht brokers.

New Services PMG has recently received planning permission for a 144 berth dry stack facility, which will provide a “launch on demand” service for boats up to 30ft and 5 tonnes for an all inclusive fee. Boats will be lifted off the racking system and placed into the water by a large specialist marine fork lift truck at the request of owners. Customers then return their boat to the PMG pontoon for return to the rack. Fees start at £148/month per year and customers can enjoy a 10% reduction on their first year fees if they register interest early. More details about the dry stack berthing facility and the considerable advantages of berthing your boat in a dry stack are set out on the web site at www.pembrokeshiremarinegroup.com. PMG is also developing an on site service centre, which will include the provision of a 40ft shed allowing work to be carried out on boats undercover. This is a service, which is not currently available on site and will be a useful asset to berth holders and visiting yachts requiring GRP work, painting, varnishing and other weather sensitive services.

find out more about the marina at:

Elevating the Marina’s Profile As part of the ongoing development and promotion of Milford Marina, Pembrokeshire Marine Group, with the assistance of the South and West Wales Marine Leisure Federation, hosted 5 of the top UK and International boating magazines in May. The power boat journalists visited the islands and up river on Magic, the marina’s resident Sealine 34, while the sailing journalists toured the waters on Pembrokeshire Cruising’s Jeanneau 42. This was followed by a guide to the facilities at Milford Marina and the plans to increase the service provision on site. The intention of these visits is to increase knowledge of the Milford Haven waterway and encourage more yachts to visit here or take up residency in the marina from the South Coast of Britain. The press visits were also used to showcase excellent value for money at Milford Marina, where berthing costs are less than 50% of the South Coast. The press days will ensure exposure of the excellent facilities in the Waterway and at Milford Marina to over 250,000 readers. Work and Play Milford Marina has grown over the past 20 years becoming a real asset to Milford Haven and offering more than 300 berths to sailors at an affordable price. Why not come and come and see the marine services we have on offer or just enjoy browsing the shops and having a light lunch overlooking the boats in this very special place. Fashion and Lifestyle Trends

very Choice you make in life defines you as a person, and to some to degree every choice you make has a reflection of the influences which you have been open to. Your choice of kitchen, pet, diet and even appearance are all in some way effected by the latest trends within your social circle. So what’s on the cards as we go forward, where are our choices taking us? We have looked at where we have been, and seen what’s becoming more popular and have put together our top list of what’s hot as we push through 2011. The decline of the Plastic Bag, and the fashion statement of your Shopping Bag Most people love to shop, with more and more emphasis being placed on environmental concerns, people have been seeking alternative means of carrying their purchases home. Whether you prefer to declare your affinity with nature using the eco-friendly type, or want to display just how current you are with a shopping tote lovingly created using fine leather, there is something out there for everyone.

Healthy living, you are what you eat Standard diet and exercise has been the message for as long as I can remember. However our lifestyles changed and less emphasis was on the family meal, balanced diet and exercise. We lived faster, did more and had to find ways to save time. This imbalance has since been redressed, and we are going back to those values. Support can be found in many areas, to help educate and give you structure if it’s something you need. You have to find the professional that suits your needs, lifestyle and bank balance.

What are your waiting for, make your statement, count your cash and head out to the shops.

Entertainment lifestyle We are shifting to spending more time in our homes now, Intertainment is the new buzz word being touted by media savvy marketers. People are starting to revisit the benefits of renting and discovering how they can sample some of life’s pleasures without incurring the hefty price tag. Less people are visiting our bars and clubs, or when they are going out it seems to be at a later time, opting instead to have ‘Film / Game Nights’ with their friends in the comfort of their own home. This trend seems to be going from strength to strength as we are given more choice, and often a better price tag when we ‘Do It Ourselves’.

DIY Decisions M

easure twice cut once, the most valuable piece of advice given to me by my father before any DIY project we undertook. Basically what he meant by that was plan everything before you start, check every step before you plan the first one, and the recheck the steps again to be sure! When planning your time, take into account your own expectations and personal standards regarding the work. If you know you are a perfectionist or that you wish to add in small details to your design, add more time so that you can pace yourself realistically. Try to take an objective step back and view to project as though you were an external contractor. What would you recommend be completed first? What work is necessary? It may be the case that the plaster needs repairs before you can begin to paint, for example.

DIY or Do You Need Help? Be Realistic, do you have the skills to undertake the job you are planning? Make sure that you have all the tools, and ensure you know what you are undertaking. If you at all in doubt then seek some advice, and possibly even get an expert in to do the job for you. Get some advice: Find a book on home renovations and step by step DIY projects, or visit a good hardware store. Most of the smaller hardware stores will give you great advice, and they are normally great DIYers in their own rights. Ask your friends and family to see if they have done a similar job themselves, any advice they could give, or any problems they came across could save you some valuable time and headaches! Failing that; talk to an expert. Hire a contractor for the job, or even. That way you can still complete the project yourself without any major hiccups.

So in summary measure twice and cut once!

S

Goodbye!

o, that’s almost it for the first edition of ‘Your Pembrokeshire’. We hope you found the magazine entertaining, informative and, above all, representative of Pembrokeshire. Pembrokeshire has such a vast plethora of activities, events, places and people that no publication could ever truly represent our amazing county as a whole. We hope we’ve done you all justice with a publication that you can help shape. That’s the only way it will ever come close to expressing our county. We hope our long hours, our caffeine fuelled evenings and our numb fingers have created something the people of our county can start to claim as their own and steer our vision the way you want it to go. That does mean grasping the initiative and contacting us. We have a vast presence on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube so that you can contact us by whatever means you have. Even Carrier Pigeon... OK, maybe not So, we’ll stop typing, click the send button and unleash our magazine. It’s been a journey, a trial and an amazing amount of fun talking to all of the people and the business owners of Pembrokeshire and we start all over again tomorrow. Thanks everyone! Shaun, @PembDave, Andy and Gillian.
