Here’s YOUR Pembrokeshire

W

elcome to November’s edition of Your Pembrokeshire. Winter is most definitely here, gone are the long, dreamy days of summer and now it’s time to tuck in, light the fire and snuggle up in the warmth....

Inside this issue you’ll find our ever present classified listings, recruitment section and what’s on listings but also some handy hints on how to get your car and your home ready for the dark winter months. Especially as they say this winter could turn out to be quite a cold one. Add to the mix a great paranormal article from Steve Parsons, the latest INterainment news and reviews and a great article on Pembrokeshire’s Forgotten Heritage and we’re confident we’ve crafted another issue of Pembrokeshire’s must have magazine that you’ll want to pick up and, hopefully, not put down until you’ve turned that last page. As an ever evolving magazine we still need your opinions, feedback and news to help us bring you the magazine you, and the whole of our county, needs and deserves. PEMBROKESHIRE’S

HIDDEN TREASURES

A

Our Forgotten History

s you drive into Warwickshire, you are welcomed by signs telling you that you’re entering Shakespeare country. The same is in Norfolk, where the signs tell you it is Nelson country that you’re entering. As Pembrokeshire is heavily reliant on its tourism industry, I am still somewhat surprised that Pembrokeshire is not marketed to the UK and beyond as TUDOR Country, with signs welcoming visitors, as they enter our county....

You are probably confused and thinking that I am referring to Pembroke Castle. No, I am in fact referring to Mill Bay, near Dale, where Henry Tudor landed on 7th August 1485, with an army of 4000 men on 55 ships, and marched to fight Richard III for the crown on England. Of course, the rest is history as Henry Tudor defeated Richard at the Battle of Bosworth Field, 2 weeks later on the 22nd August. Whilst Pembroke Castle reports that Henry Tudor was born there on 28th January 1457, there is STILL no statue to the founder of the dynasty that ruled the throne of England (and Wales) until 1603. I understand there is a campaign to place a statue to Henry outside the castle, but in my opinion, that is WELL overdue.

It was not until an old school friend came to stay that I thought I had to resolve this once and for all and by the use of Google (Henry Tudor landing Dale) I eventually got the answer I was looking for. Mill Bay! I have Pembrokeshire maps used by walkers and located Mill Bay. I was then able to drive to the National Trust car park and we walked the final mile or so to Mill Bay, which included walking along the National Park Coastal Path, past the only monument to this pivotal event in history.

Maybe Mill Bay is better kept as a tranquil small bay, rather than to become a place of pilgrimage to those of us who are captivated by the Tudors. But when you consider there are not even any signs within Dale itself, directing tourists, it makes me wonder why everyone is so secretive about the county’s links with Henry Tudor. We cannot turn back history, even if you’re not happy at what Henry VIII did to Wales and its people by his Acts of Union, but surely the Council and the Tourist boards should be doing more to promote Pembrokeshire to the UK and beyond as “The Tudor County”. So come on Pembrokeshire, be proud of your most famous son and let’s start referring to Pembrokeshire as “The Tudor County” and then we can market it to bring more visitors here, to see all that we have to offer.

Before moving to Pembrokeshire from Wiltshire, almost 10 years ago, my ex-wife and I had several holidays here and one of the first things we did was to drive to Dale and there was nothing there in the village to mark Henry Tudor’s landing. We therefore assumed he landed on the beach in the village thinking that over 500 years ago, there would have been hardly anything there. Several visits since moving to Pembrokeshire and still I had no confirmation where Henry Tudor ACTUALLY set foot on Welsh soil.

4

Am I alone in thinking that these suggestions need to be considered by Pembrokeshire County Council and the various tourist organisations within the County? I just don’t think the County does enough to blow its own trumpet! This is why in my view, Mill Bay, near Dale is, without doubt, one of Pembrokeshire’s Hidden Treasures.

Remember Them...

emembrance Day is so important for us. It doesn’t matter if you’re Welsh, Scottish, Irish or English; the only reason we’re here is because of the ultimate sacrifice paid by those who have fought across the globe to defend our realm....

In the last few months members of the PC brigade have tried to play down the importance of the Poppy and some big companies have even tried to prevent employees from letting a Poppy adorn their uniforms. There was no way we could let Remembrance Day pass without doing all we can to honour the glorious dead of Pembrokeshire: we owe them everything we have and we owe it to them to honour their memories. On Friday November 11th is our chance to stop and think about everything we have and those who have laid down their lives for freedom.

What Is Remembrance?

I remember grazing my knee as a child and the feeling of letting my dad down for crying about it. I remember finding my granddad’s medals and the feeling of awe as I held them. I remember joining the army and thinking I had escaped the magistrate. I remember the Sergeant Major shouting at me for the first time and thinking “My mums louder than him, this is going to be easy”. I remember the first mortar attack and my utter belief that my helmet, body armour and the 2 inch thick mattress above me would save me.

In the end it doesn’t matter what I remember, what matters is that WE remember, that we all remember. What matters is that we remember, not only the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of this country in time of war; but also those that have paid that price in the defence of others.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. WO2 Si Dent

I remember the second mortar attack and my unreserved promise to subscribe to a major religion. I remember a young Para in the Legion bar, boasting of his exploits and the old man in a wheel chair quietly telling him what it was like at Arnhem. I remember the lady who had served in the Land Army commenting on my medals and my embarrassed feeling that I hadn’t earned her respect. I remember the first military funeral I attended and hoping I didn’t cry. I remember the latest military funeral I attended and wondering why I couldn’t cry.

Good Eating In Pembrokeshire The Vine Inn, Johnston

I

had driven passed it many times without registering what was hidden behind the traditional facade. But it was different today. After a busy day in the office, not much in the cupboards and a rumbling stomach alerting me I needed to fuel up, I decided to try The Vine....

Upon arrival at The Vine we went into the busy bar, got a couple of drinks and were shown into the conservatory with our menus.

Recently under new management and all the feedback we were getting in the office was that this was a great place to eat. It didn’t appear to be pretentious, stuffy, or too formal - just provide good food in a relaxed manner.

The staff seemed relaxed and appeared to give off a family feel, and they were very welcoming. They were attentive, smart and friendly, but not overbearing which was great for the night we had in mind.

The Conservatory area is a nice little nook but I can’t help but feel that it needs some sprucing up and modernisation to live up to it’s potential. The same could be said of the decor throughout, not bad; just in need of some updating.

The menu was bursting with traditional pub food, no pretence or extravagance here, and it has all the usual staples, I opted for the Rump steak, and my guest decided upon a sirloin, this was to be preceded by starters of prawn cocktail and breaded garlic mushrooms. We were impressed by the speed that the starters arrived and they were garnished with delicious fresh salad and dips.

Eat, Drink & Be Merry...

After finishing our starters, there was a short wait during which we were offered drinks and made to feel welcome by having a light chat with Alun and Jill the new proprietors of The Vine. The steaks were ordered Medium Well and Medium Rare, and both were cooked to perfection, which is unusual in this type of establishment. Plus they were delivered piping hot within minutes of finishing the starter. The food and service was speedy, the portion size was large and the atmosphere was relaxed. Nothing out of the ordinary here but definitely the best priced meal we had received in a while.

During our entire time at The Vine we felt relaxed, looked after and welcomed by the staff. It’s a perfect place for a quick lunch, Sunday roast, or a family outing. The food is not going to break any records, or amaze you, but that does not seem to be what they are trying to achieve. Alun and Jill are simply trying to provide good traditional pub grub, in a good atmosphere, at a great price; which the team at The Vine have mastered hands down. Definitely worth a revisit in the future.

Defy Gravity

haun usually gives me hints about what he has arranged for me to do for this article. This month he was keeping schtum...so I was instantly suspicious!

When we turned up at The Manchester Club in Milford Haven I was totally flummoxed. When I enquired about my activity he just kept giving me a wry and knowing smile. When we opened the doors and walked into a room filled with gorgeous women I was quite hopeful. It wouldn’t last....

I am remarkably aware of my size, especially around the fit ladies that flock to the classes on a weekly basis, but it wasn’t a factor for them. They didn’t scorn or laugh at me (too much!) and they were all there to offer advice and help on my sorry attempt at Pole Dancing. Towards the end of my time with Jamie and the gorgeous girls at Defy Gravity I saw things I simply couldn’t understand how they were doing. Why weren’t they crashing down on their heads? It was truly remarkable! Jamie’s enthusiasm and acceptance was really comforting and I found it gave me more energy to push myself and try new things, I can totally understand why she has so many trophies and awards. Her teaching skills are amazing. If you’re looking for an amazing way to get fit, a great sociable hobby or even a good laugh with amazingly open and warm-hearted ladies: I cannot recommend Defy Gravity enough I found myself having such a great time I even got asked back. Thanks for inviting me out Jamie, I really enjoyed myself!

I think my first words were “Pole Dancing?!?! You’re having a laugh!” I’m not the fittest or most agile person so the idea of trying to haul my bulk around a pole was quite horrifying. Then I spoke to Jamie and she made me feel at total ease with myself and with my limited abilities. She told me it wasn’t about how you look it was about having fun and enjoying yourself.

Once I had caught my breath I got back to it. I even impressed Jamie with some of my spins around the pole. I really was feeling quite conscious by this stage and her reassurances really brought me out of myself and I started to have fun with the dancing. Within minutes I found myself getting into it and trying to push myself further with Jamie’s encouragement. She even had to reign me in on times when my enthusiasm outweighed my ability and I was trying too much. She didn’t make me feel awkward, she was giving her expert opinion on what I simply wasn’t capable of.

THE BIG QUESTION:

'm thinking of buying a new computer, to replace my old PC. But should I go for a desktop machine or a laptop – laptops seem to be all the rage these days. Which would you recommend? Answer: Unless you regularly need to move your computer from one place to another, a desktop PC appears to be the obvious choice – but things are never quite as simple as they seem. Over the years, laptops have become faster, cheaper with larger screens and better ergonomics. There’s even a class of laptop called a “desktop replacement”, designed for those without a permanent workspace or an occasional requirement for portability, but in the end the key differences between the two types of PC really haven’t changed that much.

Space tends not to be an issue with a desktop computer; there’s normally room inside the case for a second hard drive, higher capacity memory modules and expansion cards for more advanced graphics and audio, or extra ports and connections. Upgrading to a larger display, adding a second monitor, or switching to a better keyboard or mouse is not a problem either, and unlike a laptop you can position them on your desk for maximum comfort. Desktops also fare better in the Price vs. Performance equation, though the gap is narrowing all of the time. Laptops will always be more expensive due to the cost of manufacturing smaller components. They are also easily damaged, upgrades and repairs are dearer, and they are vulnerable to theft.

LET US INTERTAIN YOU! Movie Review

A

long time ago in a galaxy far, far away George Lucas created one of the most watched and best loved film universes of all time; just re-re-released on Blu-Ray is the amazing Star Wars Saga.... We’re big fans of the original Star Wars trilogy; episodes 4,5 & 6 as they’ve become. The characters stand out and are played so perfectly they almost pop off the screen. Is there a film villain more despised than Darth Vader? Unfortunately there is and he’s called Jar-Jar-Binks. The prequel trilogy is everything wrong with modern family movies. The action is by-the-book, the characters, Mannequin Skywalker included, are cold and virtually unlikeable, the love story is painful to watch and the meandering story limps to it’s inevitable conclusion with all the tension and pace of a soggy flannel. The prequel trilogy’s ONE redeeming feature is the last 10 minutes of Revenge Of The Sith, where these big screen toy ads suddenly start to feel like the Star Wars we know and love. Apart from that they’re a vapid, soulless collection of movies that not even the amazing Ewan McGregor can pull from the galactic trash compactor!

Star Wars: The Complete Saga 20th Century Fox Focusing entirely on the original trilogy you have a must see collection of epic sci-fi fantasy movies told by expert story-tellers & films that, through countless re-tinkering, still look great today.

The John Williams music is iconic and really helps the trilogies maintain a feel of continuity, grandeur and scale. The Blu-Ray transfer looks the part, the full 1080p treatment has done wonders to the films and Mr. Lucas has taken this opportunity to re-do effects shots and update the CGI again. Also the blu-ray boxset is crammed with deleted scenes like the sandstorm scene from JEDI and a massive scene with Luke and his friends from Toshi Station in A NEW HOPE. The Star Wars films, even with the prequel trilogy, are still classic movies and the Blu-Ray editions deserve to adorn the shelf of every home and would be a great pressie for the geek in your life. Our only worry is that George Lucas simply can’t leave these films alone, so this is not the definitive Star Wars Collection; our mind-bending Force powers inform us that the entire saga is being re-re-re-released in cinemas from next year re-polished and unleashed in uber-trendy 3D!

Assassins Creed: Revelations Ubisoft

ssassins Creed is the gaming franchise that keeps on giving. The first was a good idea wrapped up in monotonous missions. The second was a re-birth of the franchise that took the player to Renaissance Era Italy.... The main story of Assassins Creed revolves around a secret war between Templars and Assassins stretching from 12th century Jerusalem to the modern day. Both sides possess a machine called an ‘Animus’ which allows them to re-live the memories of their ancestors to help them find mythical super-weapons called ‘Pieces Of Eden’ that can be used to control minds. The first game took you to Jerusalem as Assassin Altair, the second took place during the Renaissance and you began playing as Ezio Auditore Da Firenze. His story takes you from his family being killed, toppling the papacy and now, with Revelations, Ezio is journeying to Constantinople in search of treasure left behind by Altair. Graphics have always been a strong point for Assassins Creed and the latest installment really delivers. Looking and sounding great Revelations promises to be the swan song Ezio deserves.

his is the extraordinary story of the sister of the most famous of Henry the Eighths’ wives: Mary Boleyn. She was educated from an early age in the French Royal Court, and brought back to England to marry.... Her husband, William Carey, was high in the Kings favor, and the beautiful Mary caught Henry’s eye when William brought her to court. A notorious womanizer, King Henry set about seducing the young bride, and fathered two children with her. Mary loved Henry, but was eventually put aside for her sister, Anne. Gregory’s fascinating take on the life of the woman who became the mistress of a great King is heartwarming, funny, tragic and full of court intrigue. You really cannot help but be totally drawn into the world of Anne’s Sister Mary and, as she becomes her sisters’ closest adviser, you get a glimpse of how hard it was for Anne to become Queen of England, but also how truly difficult it was for Mary to survive Anne’s downfall.

With Pwned Pembs

Ezio’s array of weaponry is increased again in Revelations, he now has a curved hidden blade so he can slide along high wires and he even has various different hand grenades to help him take out those pesky Templars.

Picking straight up from the previous installment; Brotherhood, you find Desmond Miles comatosed inside the Animus and he’s left to piece together his fragmented psyche....Who is the mysterious Subject: 16? Is his story more intertwined with Desmond than we know? Promising to dramatically bring Ezio’s story to an end, with the ever present multiplayer mode, our excitement towards Revelations is palpable. Released on the 15th of November for all major consoles and PC we simply cannot wait. Newcomers to the series are advised to play through the previous games first to really understand the story and scale of Revelations.

With Twilight Books

She despised her family for what they had done to further their court careers; using two innocent girls as their pawns! For those of you who have seen the film, but not read the book, I suggest you pick up a copy. The film was a travesty, as the book is superbly written, and far more engaging than the nightmare that graced our screens!

PEMBROKESHIRE

P

embrokeshire is an internationally renowned holiday destination. Holiday makers from around the UK and overseas are regular visitors throughout the year to enjoy the many and varied attractions that the county has to offer. What is not so well known is Pembrokeshire also attracts visitors from much further afield too... Visitors seemingly from other planets! An early extraterrestrial visit took place in March 1952 and was reported by Mr. Thomas who was taking a stroll amongst the dunes at Freshwater West on the fringes of the Castlemartin military range. Around Midday he encountered a shiny metallic object that was partially concealed in the sand dunes. Curious, he went closer to investigate and noticed several men standing on top of the disc shaped object.

C

As he approached one of the men who was apparently in charge of the group warned him to stay clear as he would be injured by the “strong rays” that were being emitted by the craft, since he wasn’t wearing protective clothing. He was informed that the craft was recharging itself from the Sun’s rays. Although they appeared to be human the leader revealed that the group had travelled from a distant Planet - giving Mr. Thomas the name of the planet which he was unable to later recall. He did recall that the leader said they had been visiting Earth for hundreds of years and also expressed concern that the Earth was on a path toward self-destruction. Alien visitors returned again to Pembrokeshire in 1977, this time their visits led to one of the strangest UFO flaps ever to have occurred in the UK. In early February of that year a group of schoolchildren attending Broad Haven school claimed to have seen a spaceship and a silver suited spaceman in a field adjoining their school. Teachers and Parents did not take the claims of the children seriously at first. The children persisted in their claims and shortly others started to come forward with their own curious accounts of strange lights in the Pembrokeshire skies, landed UFO’s and alien visitors. This first wave of sightings and close encounters heralded the start of a year of extraordinary happenings, as it unfolded vast numbers of people throughout the county were to claim their own bizarre experience. One family in particular seemed to be severely affected by this wave of alien tourists. The Coombs family, who at that time were living and farming at Lower Ripperston Farm overlooking St.Brides Bay suffered a series of alarming and disturbing incidents. They were followed when out in the car by strange craft and the car was also plagued by countless seemingly unexplained mechanical failures and breakdowns. These unexplained failures also extended to their TV set and numerous electrical appliances within their home and around the farm.

Steve Parsons

One terrifying evening they claimed to have witnessed a 7ft tall silver suited alien staring at the family through the window! The livestock too was affected by the visitors, their herd of cows being apparently teleported from the farm to adjoining fields belonging to a neighbouring farmer on several occasions. Another witness to these strange visitors was Mrs. Rose Granville, owner of the Haven Fort Hotel near to Broad Haven. She claimed to have witnessed a saucer shaped UFO on land adjoining the hotel and strange humanoids wearing white or silver boiler suits emerging from the craft and walking around as if collecting or gathering samples. Later, she also claimed to have witnessed aliens walking around on Stack Rocks and even entering the rock using a doorway that opened up. The events of that year resulted in a media frenzy and was regularly reported in the National press. Later, several books were written, containing the lurid accounts of the many witnesses. UFO researchers flocked to the county in their thousands all eager to see for themselves what was taking place and resulting in further claims of alien encounters.

t e r c e S p o T

Of course, sceptics have claimed that the entire UFO flap was caused by hoaxers or resulted from a combination of over active imagination and the misidentification of normal incidents. Indeed, several people did eventually come forward and claim they took part in a series of pranks and hoaxes leading to the temptation to dismiss all of the incidents. The Coombs family and other witnesses had their credibility seriously questioned and the whole affair eventually descended into chaos. The books were later shown to be either full of factual errors, inconsistencies or in several instances sheer fabrication. More than 30 years on from the now infamous ‘Dyfed Enigma’ as it became known it still remains as one of the most unusual UFO flaps ever recorded in the UK but still presents more questions than answers.

If you want to discover more about the Dyfed Enigma you might like to dig out an old copy of either ‘The Uninvited’ by Clive Harold or ‘The Dyfed Enigma’ by Randall Jones Pugh & F.W. Holiday. Both are currently out of print but a trawl through the internet or local bookshops and car boot sales often turns up a dog eared copy.

Next month, we look at some of Pembrokeshire other regular visitors - Fairies!

Mind, Body & Soul T

What is Mindfulness? ake a moment to think about your mind chatter. I will bet that its stuff from the past and thoughts about the future‌‌ of course! Now, think about what worries you and causes you stress. Stuff from the past and thoughts about the future?

I know that’s rather simple but that’s what mindfulness is all about, being in the moment, not trying to change anything, no judgement (which we are all pretty good at doing to ourselves). Just pure acceptance of who you are at that moment and what you are feeling.

Mindfulness is an ancient Eastern practise and is one way to bring full attention to our life; to be more aware and awake in our daily activities rather than being on automatic pilot, rushing around, or barely noticing anything at all. By learning to stay present we have a better chance of noticing what is happening. As a result we may make more effective responses and choices; and as Mindfulness is helping us to be more present it can enhance whatever we choose to do.

Embracing Change...

Mindfulness teaches us to develop a wider awareness so that we can see more clearly the patterns of our minds that get us stuck in our pain and stress. These patterns could be seen to be brooding and rumination on the one hand or avoidance and suppression on the other.

The process uses hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural techniques to help you achieve your ideal weight and stay there. Does It Involve Surgery? No! The Hypno-Band system is a non-invasive behavioural changing method using the techniques of hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Does It Hurt? On the contrary; the Hypno-Band procedure is extremely relaxing and pleasurable. Are There Side Effects? The Hypno-Band system is perfectly safe, there are no side effects associated with it at all! Will It Work For Me? The key to success is YOU! The Facts Behind Facials

F

acials are a very popular treatment in most beauty salons. We have divided them into A: Therapeutic and B: Pampering facials. We at Seraphim Aesthetics do quite a few of them every day. In its most basic form the steps of a facial are: 1: Cleansing 2: Skin analysis 3: Exfoliation 4: Extraction 5: Effleurage

We have also divided our therapeutic facials into: 1. Microdermabrasion Facials- These are facials which use crystals as a safe and controlled form of exfoliation. It is one of the easiest and most effective anti-ageing treatments, it softens fine lines and wrinkles, it softens coarsely textured skin, it softens scarring and reduces superficial pigmentation leaving your skin refreshed from within. 2. Oxygen Facials- Using an advanced Oxygen serum the skin plumps up and smoothens out the wrinkles from inside; quickly and dramatically rejuvenating ageing skin. As we get older our skin becomes less supple and in turn fine lines and wrinkles appear, part of the reason behind that is that oxygen levels in the skin decrease with age. The other great benefit of the oxygen facial is that it brings out the healthy glow in your skin by bringing your skins own natural oils to the surface.

3. Non-Surgical Facelift Facials: Using electrodes this facial tones up the muscles of the face. It gives you that “Buzzy” sensation but the final effect is one where you get a taut jaw line, the cheek bones appear lifted and one looks youthful. 4. Cellulite Facials: By using a combination of vacuum and pulse action it offers a non invasive solution to reduce the appearance of cellulite and improve skin tone in general 5. Advanced Facials: The Recharger for Mature skin - The Refiner for acne and problem skin - The Relaxer for sensitive, high colour and fragile skin - The Ultimate for all skin types and the Eye Zone Facial. 6. Peels: One of our specialities is Facial Peel and Heal system. This procedure uses various compounds to “peel” away damaged layers of skin and along with it, surface lines and wrinkles. RegimA contains alpha and beta hydroxyacids derived from plants. The ‘Peel & Heal’ successfully and safely, works through the outer dead layer and down to the basal living layer. It stimulates collagen production, re-elastisizing and rejuvenating even the most damaged, scarred, sun damaged or ageing skins. The RégimA helps to THICKEN the skin, making it much more youthful, healthy and less prone to cell changes. It contains skin and scar healing ingredients blended with only pure, NATURAL, unadulterated acids. Although the ‘Peel & Heal’ is potent it is still easily tolerated and one does not have to experience a major peeling to reap the full benefit. The secret is always in the formulation. With regular peels the skin becomes firmer, smoother, even in colour and texture.

Are You Ready Christmas Toys Must have List...

A

defecating Dog? A doll in a hydration tank? There are some amazingly bizarre toys out there which wouldn’t have even been thought about when we were young.... The Toy Retailers Association (TRA) have come up with a list of the 12 top toys, also included are favourites such as Fireman Sam, Elmo and a Nerf gun – the Vortex Nitron Blaster. A spokesperson for the TRA commented:

‘Most of the products on the Toy industry’s official list of predictions for Christmas best sellers have a technological twist’ The top 12 were chosen from a list of 70 toys, including two interactive tablets aimed at the four- to nine-year-old market, clearly imitations of Apples’ iPad, a favourite gadget for many parents. The VTech InnoTab, operates with touch screen technology, while the LeapPad Explorer relies on a stylus to operate it. Both retail at £79.99. VTech’s Kidizoom Digital Camera, which was the bestselling toy last year, is once again in the top 12 after a makeover and a relaunch as the Kidizoom Twist – for my children and their passion for photography - this is a must have! The TRA, alongside it’s own list, also gave children the chance to vote on toys themselves. Alongside ‘Apps’ such as ‘Angry Bird’ the children also chose new takes on classic toys.

In the last two years we have really gone from strength to strength. Online Home: Pembrokeshire Central

I

spend a lot of time online, and our county has lots of little websites floating out there. Many are niche, many are not updated and many just don’t have a purpose. I think this is a shame, why isn’t there once central place for Pembrokeshire that has information for everyone, kept up to date – and easy to use? I’ll tell you why not, it’s not a viable proposition. It costs money to run a website, it takes time to keep it up to date and it costs money to market it and get a reasonable amount of traffic to it.

That’s all about to change. Pembrokeshire Central is launching this month. We have been working hard here behind the scenes for a year now trying to come up with a formula that works, and we think we have it. We think we have thought of everything, somewhere for the locals, somewhere for the tourists, somewhere for events, a classified section, jobs listings and even an online shop from the Pembrokeshire businesses. Everything under one roof!

This is our launch month so not all the facilities will be live from the start; however they will be going live as and when we complete each section. To make this a success we need input from you. Your photos, your blogs, poems and anything else you want to send us and we can put it on there for you. We want you, the people of Pembrokeshire, to be involved with this project and make it a success, if you want anything on there that is missing then get in touch with us on 01646 663008 or email: office@pembrokeshirecentral.com If you run a business, sell craft items, or anything else and are interested in finding out more about our online shop to sell your products then get in touch on 01646 663008. The only condition we make is that you are Pembrokeshire based and you can be involved. We look forward to seeing you there soon and, until we’re ready to unleash the power of Pembrokeshire Central:

YOUR Peace Of Mind Home Security with The Walters Group

R

You too can have a Key that fits all!

ecords show one of the first civilizations to use locks on doors were the Egyptians. They used very fine wood was crafted it into different shapes to replicate a recess on the door where the ‘Key’ would be used to open the lock. The keys where shaped and used as rings....

In recent years we have the great ambassadors to locks, like Chubb, Yale, Bramah etc. Our favourite is quite possibly Chubb and Yale. Linus Yale, was the person who it is implied created the ‘pin tumbler’ lock that’s commonplace here in the UK. When it was created Linus implied that it was un-pickable and for many years it was sold as just that. Hundreds quite possibly thousands of budding locksmiths tried to pick the cylinder, but alas failed for many years.

At The Walters Group we hand build Master Key Systems for small businesses as well as houses. Because they are hand built we can create various security levels to suit your exact needs. Imagine your house, with all its doors working with one key, imagine your staff having a key to your office and your Children a key to your home, but your key would work all, plus the padlock to your shed in the garden. In a simpler form, we can simply have multiple doors keyed alike. Security of keys is also important, and should you not wish for anyone to have keys cut our restricted and now patented systems will ensure your keys will not be easily duplicated. With the patent system unauthorized duplication is illegal. So if your finding that big bunch of keys digging holes in your pockets then from less than £30.00 a cylinder you can have total control and flexibility! Give us a call, pop down to see us, or we will pop out and have a chat, having the freedom of knowing you have a key on you that will open your locks all the time is simple, convenient, secure and can quite possibly save you money. Lets Talk ..... 01646 698218

All over the Americas Linus Yale’s Pin Tumbler Lock was selling in its millions due to the misconception that it was un-pickable. Scouring the history books you find that eventually it was picked by a Canadian; but in the mean time so many of his cylinders were sold that the momentum just continued and, even though it was picked, in reality it was one of the best locking solutions around in its time.

The Pin Tumbler concept is still very popular today and is quite possibly the most common format used in the locking industry. Obviously we all know the Yale type locks on our front doors, the concept is used on all UPVC locking solutions, Aluminum doors etc. This has allowed matrixes to be created to allow more than one key with different cuts to open locks, hence the creation of Master Key Systems. Many will think that master key systems are only used for large commercial buildings where you need more flexibility of locking and control.

Get Ready For Winter With::

Winter driving Be prepared – Be Safe

W

inter is upon us, and it is the season which is probably the most dangerous for motorists. With some due care and preparation you can ensure you are safe and minimise chances of breakdown. The AA provides some great advice for you and we have collected some of that for you. For more comprehensive information then visit their website; www.theAA.com

Battery and electrics

Lights, heaters and wipers put high demands on the car battery. If your driving is mainly dark rush-hour trips, the battery will give out eventually. Batteries rarely last longer than five years. Replacing one near the end of its life can save a lot of time and inconvenience at the side of the road. • Avoid running electrical systems any longer than necessary – turn the heater fan down and switch the heated rear window off once windows are clear. • If the car stands idle most of the weekend a regular overnight trickle charge is a good idea to give the battery a chance to revive. • Turn off non-essential electrical loads like lights, rear screen heater and wipers before trying to start the engine. • Use the starter in short five-second bursts if the engine doesn't start quickly, leaving thirty seconds between attempts to allow the battery to recover.

Tyres

We recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm. Don’t reduce tyre pressures to get more grip – it doesn’t work, and reduces stability. It’s rare to need snow chains unless you live in an isolated area hit with heavy snow, and where the roads are not cleared. They must be removed to drive on a metalled road without a reasonable covering of snow. Consider changing to winter or all season tyres – these have a higher silica content in the tread which prevents it hardening at lower temperatures, and therefore gives better grip in cold wet conditions.

Driving in snow and ice

Gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving - stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow. • Wear comfortable, dry shoes for driving. Cumbersome, snow-covered boots slip on the pedals. • Pull away in second gear, easing your foot off the clutch gently to avoid wheel-spin. • Up hill - avoid having to stop part way up by waiting until it is clear of other cars or by leaving plenty of room to the car in front. Keep a constant speed, choosing the most suitable gear well in advance to avoid having to change down on the hill. • Down hill - reduce your speed before the hill, use a low gear and try to avoid using the brakes. Leave as much room as possible between you and the car in front. • If you have to use brakes then apply them gently. Release the brakes and de-clutch if the car skids.

Carew Car

Dismantlers

If you get stuck, straighten the steering and clear the snow from the wheels. Put a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels to give the tyres some grip. Once on the move again, try not to stop until you reach firmer ground.

Carew Airfield, Sageston, SA70 8SQ

Above all; when the bad weather descends DON’T go out unless totally necessary!
