Here at the YLL office, we’re super excited about the arrival of July and that’s not JUST down to the sunshine or the thought of a beer garden trip after work (although it does sound good, doesn’t it?) There’s going to be plenty of buzz in the city this month, and York’s music scene is looking especially exciting. Whether you fancy the classical tunes at York Early Music Festival or if you find yourself boogieing down to the Music Showcase Weekend at York Racecourse, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Schools will of course be breaking up for the summer holidays later this month too, and although we fully encourage you to enjoy those last moments of peace, there are plenty of activities for your family to look forward to, including the hotlyanticipated York Maze. We can’t wait for this year's theme and if you fancy being in with the chance to win a bunch of tickets, turn to page 14 to find out how. Whatever you do this July, we hope you have a fabulous month! YORK LIFE
It’s been a decade since pioneering service, Keep Your Pet established itself within the community and it’s fair to say they’ve been successful in their endeavours, as a testament to their ever-growing clientele and impressive volunteer base of 115 members. In conjunction with Age UK York, Keep Your Pet provides local, shortterm support for elderly domestic pet owners in times of ill-health or other emergencies. Over the years they have provided essential assistance such as short-term fostering, dog walking and home feeding, whilst being host to fabulous fundraising events, from doggie fashion shows to carnivals and ceilidh dancing. With the evidence of increased social withdrawal following the pandemic, the organisation recognises that now, more than ever, the support that they offer is increasingly significant. For example, to help rebuild the confidence of those who have become nervous about venturing out since lockdown, the organisation is now offering a ‘walk alongside’ service, whereby Keep Your Pet volunteers walk with an owner and their dog.
Hoping to reach a wider demographic, Keep Your Pet is actively appealing for suggestions and contacts to ensure that support reaches all who need it. Going forward, they are setting their sights on building more partnerships with other local businesses that support their aims, such as supermarkets, vets, animal food suppliers, animal rescue services, and most recently, were invited to put on a display at the Clifton Moor Tesco store. As an organisation that relies heavily on fundraising and donations, the team behind Keep Your Pet are now also calling for willing volunteers to help with their exciting programme of events, with delivering leaflets and posters, or simply spreading the word about the service. Want to get involved? For more information on how you can help or for future events, visit https://keepyourpet.co.uk/

All walks are organised by mighty mums, Erin and Gabby, who are both on hand during the walks to offer friendly advice, support, and a good old natter. An older member of the opposite sex will be very helpful and supportive in a number of different ways. There is a sexual element here, but not necessarily a romantic or an emotional one. This could be dangerous and embarrassing if you’re not aware of what is going on. On a slightly different note, this is a very positive period for samesex relationships, especially those which have some history and maturity associated with them.

letter’ days. There are some interesting travel aspects between the 7th and the 14th but in all fairness, this could just be a holiday break. Between the 14th and the 21st you’re going to be feeling full of confidence and energy, and
probably will be enjoying a greater degree of influence over other people than you might imagine… but herein lies a problem! During the last week of the month, you come up against some envy and resentment from a friend or
colleague (probably of the same sex) which will lead to a clash of wills and conflict. This is not a situation that can, or will be resolved overnight. Come to think of it, this could even be a conflict between mothers and daughters!

July should be quite a lovely month for most members of the sign with the accent firmly on emotional unions and relationships. Those in established partnerships recognise the strength and worth of what they’ve got, while singletons are presented with at least one (and probably two) opportunities to stop being singletons. Let’s see the third week of the month as being the optimum time for this situation to emerge.
RD
SEPT - 22ND OCT
Some tension in parent/child relationships, especially if we’re talking about mothers rather than fathers. On the one hand, parents of teenage children may be having some problems while Libran children may be having a few problems of their own right now which, in their opinion, their parents could not possibly understand. There’s nothing new about this, but it is a minefield of eggshells so tread carefully.
RD
OCT - 21ST NOV
On more than one occasion you will come up against restrictions imposed by bureaucracy, but this time around, rather than giving in to it with acceptance, you’ll fight back and break a few rules – and I’ll be cheering you on from my corner of the country! There are some people who will not approve of the company you’re keeping, and perhaps you need to tell them to keep their noses out of your affairs.

NOV - 21ST DEC
Not the easiest month of the year. In so many areas your hands are tied and you feel unable to change things that need to be changed. There is no point in banging your head against a brick wall, and far better to back off, and let certain events take their natural course. Some concerns (and irritations) connected to a younger male member of the family, and you’ll have to change your mind about something and remake a decision.
CAPRICORN 22

DEC - 19TH JAN
The positive energies associated with June carry on over into July, which should carry on being a busy month on the work scene with some alleviation of financial worries and concerns, particularly around the 8th and the 13th. Perhaps a tense few days around the 18th when your energy levels are not up to par, but some really good travel vibes around the 23rd to 28th, and even if it’s only a short holiday, you deserve and need this break.
AQUARIUS 20

JAN - 18TH FEB
Quite an element of domestic tension during the first week of the month, alleviated by a busy and financially successful week between the 7th to the 14th. During the third week of the month, you’ll be faced with at least one awkward decision on the lines of do you do something now or put it off until later? I’m fairly sure you’ll go for the second option, and if nothing else, it’s certainly the safest bet.

FEB - 20TH MAR
An old allegiance was sacrificed to make way for some new commitment. Some specific financial gains are made during
the first two weeks of the month – which is lovely and well deserved, although it will cause some jealousy and resentment in a third party. Unfortunately, quite a major falling out with an old friend sometime between the 15th and 25th, and sad though it may be, if a friendship is past its sell-by date, you need to throw it out.

A few tingles of financial tension this month as you measure your income against your outgoings, and there may be twinges of regret at some of the purchases you have made earlier this year. I’m not saying that this is necessarily a time to sell, but it is definitely a time to stop buying. At least on this subject a partner/spouse will be in complete agreement with you, which leads to a greater degree of emotional harmony.

APR - 20TH MAY
A very interesting month associated with the acquisition of new knowledge which causes a major boost to levels of optimism and self-confidence. Anything to do with education and learning gets a gold star, and there will be opportunities in abundance for career and business bods. A journey towards the month’s end to a nostalgic old haunt will be welcome.

MAY - 20TH JUNE
Quite a vibrant month for buying and selling and in relationships (both personal and professional) watch out for some element of role reversal! There will be some hellos and goodbyes in the weeks ahead, and by and large, it could be said that you are clearing the decks for new actions and ambitions. Certainly, your vision of your long-term future goes through a subtle metamorphosis.

The Final Ball S H O R T S T O R Y O F T H E M O N T H BY ROBIN LEWIS LIGHT “This could be the one we win,” said Ian. “Yes, it could,” I said. “Though we say that every week.” Ian laughed. “Snoozer thinks we are going to start winning very soon.” I frowned. “Don’t call him that.
That’s the captain and my father.” The Murston cricket team had too many inexperienced players. This season - the village’s first season playing cricket for many years - we had lost every game. We could not go down - you start in the lowest division – and Dad believed that we would get better. I had heard some of the other lads call him Snoozer - behind his back, of course. Today we were playing league leaders Askwith. It was the last over and we only needed seven runs and three balls had been bowled. Askwith had James Phillips bowling the final over. He was a very quick bowler and he did not know his own pace. Four balls in Matt, our batsman, was caught behind. I walked out to the wicket. Seven runs from two balls now. I looked at my fellow batsman, Alex Hartley, and gave him a thumbs up. He gave me a look of sympathy in return. James Phillips bowled a very wide ball at me. The umpire turned to the scoring hut and put his hands out, signalling a

wide. Six runs needed now. The next ball was the quickest ball I have ever faced. I was wearing a helmet but the ball clipped it as it flashed past me. The next thing I remember the umpire was standing over me. I realised that my father was also standing and looking down at me. “Son,” he said, gently. Dad walked with me to the pavilion. The Askwith captain came over to us as I sat down. “Are you going to concede this game, then?” he said. My father just sat down beside me. “Give me a minute,” he said, to himself as much as anyone else. “Follow my finger, son,” he said. I followed it and nodded, before giving him a thumbs up. “I’m fine,” I said. “I’m good.” My father smiled and waved at the tea lady, Joan. “Bring this man a cup of tea,” said Dad. He patted my shoulder. Then he looked at the Askwith captain and there was just the edge of irritation in his voice. “Sorry, you were saying?” The Askwith captain shrugged. “You’re conceding the game?” he said. “You have a ball still to bowl, don’t you?”
“My name is Robin Lewis-Light and I have lived in York for most of my life. I got a journalism degree a long time ago and now I just write for the joy of it. I played cricket when I was much younger, but now I only watch and hope. “
“Yes, but you have no batsmen left,” he said. Dad shook his head. “We have one batsman left,” he said, and picked up his bat, walking out to the wicket. Joan came and handed me a cup of tea, sitting next to me. “He’s not done this for a while,” she said. “No…” I said. “He’s never really played the game.” Joan laughed. “They may call him Snoozer now, and he knows it, but back in the day he was known as a big hitter.” “A big hitter?” I said. Joan smiled. “Oh, yes. Just watch.” she said, so I watched. All of a sudden it seemed to be in slow motion. My father took a step sideways as the ball was bowled. He hit the ball with the sweetest sound I have ever heard and the ball disappeared over the pavilion. The umpire raised his arms to call it a six and Murston celebrated their first victory. I had never seen a ball hit as far as my father hit it on that final ball and nobody ever called him Snoozer again.

Distance:
7 Miles 1/2
The recommended starting point is the Barton-le-Willows crossroads. On-street parking is available in the village, and it is also possible to start from Kirkham Bridge, but parking spaces are limited. Barton-le-Willows is 11 miles from York via the A64 turning off at Steelmoor Lane. There is no direct public transport to either Barton-le-Willows or Kirkham. The best option is a Coastliner bus to Whitwellon-the-Hill which is about a 20-minute walk from Kirkham Bridge (point four of directions).
The highlight of this walk is a long stretch beside the River Derwent. It also provides an opportunity to visit Kirkham Priory and Crambe, one of York’s most tucked-away villages.
1 Starting from the crossroads in Barton-leWillows, take the road signed ‘Howsham’ and ‘Leavening’ following it as it bends left. At the junction go right (signed ‘Howsham’) but in about 50 metres, look for an inconspicuous footpath marker left by a hedge gap. Take the path to the field corner on the right, then head left down the field. Keep the hedge to the right, kinking left and right, to eventually arrive at the field’s far-right corner. Go into the young trees, soon reaching a T-junction. Turn right with the stream on the left. In about 100 metres, go left over a narrow bridge part embedded in the tree trunks. 2 Walk ahead across the field aiming for a gap halfway along the hedge on the other side. Once through the gap, continue straight across the next field to a further hedge gap. Turn immediately right to a wooden fence in the corner of the field. Now walk ahead on the narrow path between fence and hedgerow. At the field end, go through the gate and turn left with a hedge on the left, and a fence on the right. Cross the track in front of the farm and continue on an enclosed path downhill to the road. Cross and go through the gate opposite to walk alongside the hedge to the gate, giving access to the riverside path.

Directions
Time:
3 Turn left and walk alongside the river which continues for nearly three miles, passing through gates and crossing ditches and boardwalks. Nearing Kirkham, the path enters woodland. Keep close to the river, climbing slightly as the path approaches the weir. Exit the wood to walk over the grass to a gate adjacent to the road bridge. 4 Turn left and go over the level crossing (to visit Kirkham Priory and Stone Trough Inn, go right over the bridge). About 30 metres beyond the railway, take the signed path left into the woodland which soon swings right and climbs steeply through the trees. Follow the path out of the wood to the road. 5 Turn left, but in 50 metres take a signed path to the left through a metal gate. Keep with the path as it enters the right edge of the woodland, staying above the steep bank to the left. After the obvious path crosses a wider patch of woodland, go through a metal gate and turn right in the field alongside the wood to the field corner. Here, turn left with a hedge on your right. Continue across the grass heading downhill with a farm on the left, meeting a farm access track at the bend. Go ahead (right), following the access track to the road. 6 Turn right on the road and continue until the
Is this walk for me? This is a generally easy route but there are two climbs, a few areas with encroaching vegetation, several stiles, and a narrow footbridge. Muddy patches may be encountered near the river – this section will be impassable when water levels are high. The path across the fields from Barton-leWillows requires careful navigation as the route may not be clear on the ground.
What to see The tranquil and unspoilt stretch of the River Derwent between Howsham and Kirkham offers one of the best riverside walks in the York area. Historic Howsham Hall and the trees of Howsham Wood are visible across the water. At Kirkham, there’s the bridge, weir and ruined priory (entry fee applies). Tiny Crambe, has several interesting buildings. St Michael’s Church has a restored eighteenth-century organ and Norman font. Good views over the Vale of York and Wolds are available above the village.

MOST POPULAR CAR COLOURS OVER THE CENTURY REVEALED! No industry has boomed quite like the automobile trade over the last century, and it’s pretty incredible to think about how much car models have changed throughout this time. But what about car colour trends? The car lease experts at LeaseCar. uk have been exploring the most popular colours of cars in the UK since the 1950s, and the results are in:
1950s: Pale Green When the decade of ‘Rock and Roll’ not only meant Elvis and his blue suede shoes, but also the rise of cool, classic sports cars from Triumphs to Jags. During this decade, crisp pastel colours
were a firm British favourite and pale green was a top choice for drivers.
1997 alone, there were approximately 6,733,640 red cars sold.
1960s: Beige
2000s: Blue
Who said beige was boring? Greys and beiges were the shades of choice in those flower-power years. Other fashionable colours such as metallic gold and light yellow were also really popular.
From the popular British boy band to the double denim trend, it is no secret that blue was a noughties obsession. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures reveal that there were a staggering 7,522,576 sales of blue cars in 2007 alone, making it the most popular colour of the decade.
1970s: Brown Earthy tones were fashionable at this time, but the top choice amongst drivers was brown. Many hazel and mudcoloured motors made it to the market in the ‘70s.
1980s: Black Although we’d love to say that an ‘80’s neon purple came up trumps, black was seen to be the most popular colour of this decade.
1990s: Red Oh so rouge! Red topped the charts in this decade and in

2010s: Black Living up to its timeless reputation, black made a comeback in this decade, taking the top spot for the first time since the 1980s.
Present-Day: Grey Even despite the impact of sales during the pandemic, grey topped the charts according to SMMT, with a huge 397,197 cars sold last year.
The Future: Yellow? Calling all Mr. Bean fans! According to SMMT figures, yellow cars have increased their market share by over half, with almost 7,000 vehicles sold. Could yellow take the high road next decade? We shall have to see.

SPORT
YORK
COLUMNIST
Simon Pattinson
We hear from our resident sports writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson. As I write this, I am still looking back at how on earth we managed to gain promotion from National League North! What a superb achievement and what a day it was for all York City fans to finally see the back of regional football and get back to a level where we at least belong in this current climate. It’s still not League football (where we should be), but it’s back on the right track from a time that represents a shambolic era for the club. Yes, Covid-19 may have potentially gotten in the way of promotion sooner, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that we have seen the lowest of the low moments over the past five years or so. All that aside, John Askey is a hero as far as I am concerned. Askey has galvanised the club by completely rebuilding a side in the middle of a season, making players fight and making them fitter and as a result, we as the fans have shared the belief that this side has truly been set. Since the retained list came out and despite the sad news of Pete Jameson joining Harrogate Town, there has been a real bond with this side that fans haven’t seen since the ‘Gary Mills 2012 Wembley twice’ era (coincidentally, it has recently been 10 years since
that very special week!) I think the relationship between the sadlynow-departed Jameson with young fan, Jack, epitomised the togetherness that the fans had with this set of players. The pictures of Jack with the team will go down in history and we will be forever thankful to this group for getting the job done. Clayton Donaldson, another of the players who has now left the club created the ideal fairytale, previously returning to where it all started for him 16 years ago, under Billy McEwan. If he wasn’t already a club legend he cemented that for me, with his promotion and with showing real class and experience all season. However, sentiment gets us nowhere and we wouldn’t necessarily be able to sustain what we want as a club going forward in the National League, with the players who have departed. In fact, this was the mistake I think that got us into a mess that ended with Gary Mills then losing his job in his first stint. I think I say thank you from all fans to John Askey though - I said he is a hero, and that feels like an understatement for the miracles that he has performed. We were sitting in 15th place in January
and only Gateshead, the champions of National League North, had bettered City by just 30 points by the end of the season. Just staggering! As we currently await players who have yet to sign new deals, we know that even despite all the hard work of last season, this is just the beginning for City, under Askey. As I write this, Scott Boden, who scored 13 goals for Boreham Wood last season, is the first recruit and I think this will be a catalyst to make a big step up next season. If we keep the spine of the side we have offered deals to and add similar quality, I do believe we will do
very well next season. I have to also give a big shout to the York City Ladies who have announced Steph Turnbull as their new manager for the new season in their first-ever time in the FA Women’s National League. What a job from Chris Hamilton, who left for a new challenge at the end of the season after working wonders with the team. They not only achieved a double-winning season but lost only two games all season, scoring 105 goals and conceding only 23. York City as a whole feels like it’s only going one way.

It’s birthday month here at Your Local Link, and what an amazing 19 years we have had so far. From competitive ping-pong tournaments, ‘Come Dine With Me’ lunchtimes in the office and 2pm Worldle games, there is never a dull moment. Asides from surviving a pandemic, in the last couple of years we’ve seen an exciting move from our little office in Haxby to our new office base in the labyrinth that is Clifton Moor Industrial Estate. We’ve also proudly grown our readership to reach over 90,000 households and have witnessed over 16,000 followers across all of our social media platforms. None of this would be made
possible without the incredible support of our advertisers and loyal readers, to whom we owe a lot of thanks. Above everything, we feel especially lucky to represent the city of York itself. Steeped rich in history, with some of the strangest street names going and probably more bridges than bus stops (maybe an ever-so-slight exaggeration, but still…), this is a place like no other. With lots to see, do and explore in the area, we thought we’d share some of our favourite things about this fab city that we all call home: Helen: “We have some really interesting history in this city and I love that York is supposed to be the most haunted city in Europe. I lived in Leeds for over 20 years but fell in love with York in the last couple of years by visiting as a tourist from Leeds, and chose to move to the city by myself four years ago and I still act like a tourist.” Emily: “I love York because there’s always something going on! This city is full of amazing independent businesses, delicious food, and some really cool events every month.

It still astounds me that the magazine goes into every home and I’m always surprised at how much is going on in the city when I read the events diary in the magazine each month.” Mim: “I love York because of all the independent shops and restaurants we are lucky enough to have in the city centre!”

BUSINESS
COURSES FOR 2022 / 2023
We have a couple of new faces in the PenLife Team. We have taken on two new Advisers after really taking our time to find the right people to fit in with the PenLife team. Everyone, please meet Craig and James. Craig and James have been with us now since January 2022, and we know we’ve made the right decision because we can’t remember a time without them. They’ve been busy getting up to speed with the ways of PenLife and are in the process of introducing themselves to the clients they’ll be looking after going forward. We thought it would be nice to introduce them properly to everyone now they’ve settled in.
Craig Howard Craig previously worked as an Independent Financial Adviser for Moneyweb Ltd in Scarborough but moved across to J. Illingworth & Company Ltd when he came to live in York a few years ago. Craig enjoys a leisurely round of golf and on occasion you may see him rowing on the River Ouse. Since arriving at PenLife he’s thrown himself into the developmental part of the role and is already studying for his second Chartered level exam, the expectation is that he will reach Chartered Status early next year which will be an amazing achievement in such a short time. 1. If you were stranded on a Desert island, who would you want with you? Maybe Ben Fogle so I could star on ‘New Lives In the Wild’. 2. Where/what was your first job? I enjoyed spending my summers on a boating lake in Scarborough, helping tourists on and off Pedalos, Canoes and Rowing Boats. 3. What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given? I’m not sure, but I do like to receive a good book! 4. What’s your favourite food? I love Indian food, but I will try anything. 5. What never fails to make you laugh? Talking about memories with family and friends!!
James Wadsworth James has worked in Financial Services for over 8 years and his previous role was as a Financial Adviser at St James’ Place Wealth Management across in West Yorkshire. He loves traveling to new countries, meeting different people and experiencing different cultures but also enjoys time at home with his partner and sausage dog. James has also been studying away and with one exam to go and should reach Chartered Status later this year. 1. If you were stranded on a Desert island, who would you want with you? David Attenborough so he could narrate on the wildlife on the island. 2. Where/what was your first job? Stacking the beer, wine and spirit shelves at Asda whilst at college. 3. What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given? A watch from a friend I met traveling. 4. What’s your favourite food? A Sunday roast dinner 5. What never fails to make you laugh? Anything Ricky Gervais says We’re thrilled to have them both on board. If you have any questions or queries about your financial or lifestyle journey, please feel free to email enquiries@pen-life. co.uk, or alternatively, call us on 01904 661140. We cannot guarantee that you will be working with Craig or James, but we have an array of fantastic financial planners who have all of the relevant qualifications and expertise to help you with your queries.

YOUR HOME & GARDEN
As it’s now July, you will hopefully be reading this while basking in the glorious summer sunshine and sipping a glass of something cool! In the hope of warm weather, I thought it might be worth mentioning that this is a testing time for your old fridge freezer. Make sure you keep an eye on your fridge because as the room temperature rises, it will be doing more work than usual. If your fridge is feeling the strain, help it out by avoiding unnecessary openings of the door or putting any warm food in to cool it down. It seems obvious but the longer you can leave the fridge door shut, the better as it helps to maintain its cool temperature. If you suspect your fridge or freezer might be struggling then now could be the time to trade up to a more economical model before the worst
happens. LOCAL EXPERT Refrigeration MATT TODD products are graded from A to G and modern energy-efficient appliances are not only good for the planet but will also save you money every time the electricity bill lands. Food will also stay fresh for longer so you can not only space out your trips to the local butchers, but can save more money with less food waste. Look out for models with an energy rating of D or better to save money and the planet. Of course, it’s far more likely that while you’re reading this it is actually raining and your Chardonnay is being watered down by mother nature. Either way, I hope your summer gets off to a good start and your fridge is in fine fettle! If not; you know where we are.
A well-cared-for plant can be a great centrepiece for any room, and the staff at Botanic have been providing beautiful plants for homes and businesses in York for over four years. Alongside their wide variety of tropical plants, cacti and succulents, they offer specialist advice to help you find and care for the ideal plant for your home. Here are a few of the team’s favourites to add a little greenery to your life! Monstera deliciosa The quintessential '70s plant, the Monstera (or Swiss Cheese Plant) is a great choice if you want to bring a bit of the tropics into your home. Their large leaves with Swiss cheese-style holes are instantly recognisable, and their minimal care requirements are a bonus. Position them somewhere with bright, indirect light and allow them to dry out completely between waterings - in a warm, bright position this may be every 2-3 weeks. Monstera likes to climb, so consider providing a moss pole or other support.
to grow, and like to be watered once their soil feels completely dry - make sure to water evenly! Also, try not to move them more than necessary to avoid causing them stress. Calathea makoyana The perfect statement plant, these boldly-patterned beauties look as though they've been painted - but it's all natural! The round, elegant leaves will attract plenty of attention in the home, and it's easy to maintain their beauty. They enjoy humidity, so position them in a bathroom or kitchen out of the way of dry air and direct sunlight. Allow the pot to dry most of the way between waterings, and your plant will thrive.
Begonia maculata A close relative of the wax Begonia and its vibrant clusters of flowers found in flower beds around the country, these striking plants have a modern, architectural appearance to them. These Begonia will feel most at home in a bright, warm spot with plenty of room

Summer is undoubtedly one of the prettiest seasons. However, along with the promise of sunnier days, comes drier conditions and so it’s really important to pay particular attention to our plants this month, to make sure they’re still thriving.
from drying out by moving them to a cooler room or away from a bright window. If you’re away for a longer holiday (lucky you!) be sure to check for information on your specific plant and how best to care for it in your absence.
Deadhead those perennials
It may sound obvious, but when growing plants in pots, one of the most important tasks is ensuring that it receives just the right amount of water. Roots need air and water to thrive, as well as good compost or soil. Potted plants need tending to all year round, but especially so in the summer when they can quickly run out of water and nutrients. That being said, most plants will do fine if you let them dry out a little between waterings as they will adjust to drinking less water if there isn’t much available. It’s all about the balance!
Most flowers fade with time and should be removed. Deadheading regularly supports better growth and more blossoms for your beds and borders. As soon as the old flowers begin to look withered, remove them to ensure the best bloom.
Give your houseplants a little love Giving plants a good watering before going away on your jollies may be enough if you’re only away for a short while. You can also prevent your plants

APHID ATTACK
At the time of writing, that’s four or so weeks before you’re likely to have received this issue of Local Link, the otherwise good start to the growing year has been marred by a sudden appearance of Brevicoryne brassicae. Unless you’re an agronomist or entomologist you’re unlikely to be familiar with this name, as was I until undertaking a little research. Brevicoryne brassicae is the scientific name for mealy cabbage aphid, a pest that has suddenly infested virtually all my young brassica (cabbage family) plants. And I’m not alone. Other York area gardeners are also commenting on its abrupt appearance. Mealy cabbage aphid isn’t an unusual pest in the garden. What is unusual however is the earliness, suddenness and scale of this year’s onslaught. Normally this aphid isn’t about in numbers until summer. Even then it generally appears spasmodically, attacking odd plants rather than virtually every one. Why this year sees it so active early in the season I’m unsure, but the mildness of last winter may be a factor. Although I can’t be sure of this either, its prevalence now could mean it’ll be a menace all through summer.
So, how do you know if you’ve got mealy cabbage aphid? To be clear, you only need to watch out for it on members of the brassicae family. Brassicae are cabbage-type plants: as well as cabbage that’s sprouts, broccoli, kale and cauliflower, and, perhaps more surprisingly, turnips, swedes, radish, and some salads, such as rocket. Suspicion of the presence of mealy cabbage aphis should be aroused if whitish-yellow blotches are seen on the face of leaves with purplish-tinged patches on the undersides. This blotching is accompanied by pronounced leaf distortion and curling. On closer inspection, dense clusters of small greyish-white aphis will be found, these having an appearance somewhat akin to discarded cigarette ash. While disfigurement of the larger outer leaves is the most visible symptom, the severest damage is caused by aphis congregating at the heart of plants. This stunts growth and, if the delicate growing point is harmed, the plant may never develop or ‘head’ properly. In some cases, young plants are so overwhelmed they die. Keeping mealy cabbage aphid in
check depends on the scale of the attack. On mature plants, especially if clusters are on outer leaves that’ll be discarded at harvest, it’s probably safe not to intervene. In my experience, most aphis infestations are eventually cleared by predators, mainly insects like ladybirds (adults and larvae) and hoverflies. On immature plants, however, intervention is necessary to avert irreparable damage. Here the best method is to squash the aphis clusters using a finger and thumb. Care needs to be taken not to injure the plants, especially the vulnerable growing point. An alternative is contact insecticides, some of which are marketed as organic. I prefer to avoid these, however, partly because of the potential side effects on beneficial insects but also because it’s difficult to ensure these are applied thoroughly enough to coat the aphis. Mealy cabbage aphid is a perennial pest problem, but one that may be reaching a new intensity this year. Whether this is a one-off or whether it signals a new trend, perhaps another consequence of a changing climate remains to be seen. Whatever the cause, it’s a pest to

YOUR FAMILY ERY FO R YO UR CH ILD CH OO SIN G TH E RIG HT NU RS Time certainly flies and with September on the horizon, you may be starting to think about childcare options in preparation for the new term. If you’re new to the search and wish to use a day nursery for childcare, get shortlisting a few different nurseries in your area and make an effort to visit each one in person, if possible. Doing a bit of digging before
hand will improve your chances of choosing the right place that suits both your and your child's needs. But what actually makes a good nursery, and where should you begin your search? We've put together a handy checklist to help with your hunt.
Recommendations: Start with the basics. Recommendations from other parents are often a good place to start. Get booking a tour of the nurseries that you like the sound of and try and chat with one or two of the parents to get a feel for the place. If there are no other parents around when you go, ask the nursery if they can provide a few reviews for you.
Positive staff: An obvious care for children is extremely important, so make sure
that the team are passionate and demonstrate a high level of attention to your child's needs. They'll be keen and approachable, and will be calm under pressure. Questions regarding your child's health and treatment, as well as their interests, should also be asked by the staff. They may well enquire about your daily routine and discuss how they might assist your child in adjusting to their new surroundings.
Activities: Your day nursery should include activities that will encourage your child’s emotional and physical growth as well as their creativity, social and communication abilities. This could be anything from sandpit and water play, dancing, cooking, jigsaws, and painting. Children learn through play, so look for a place that responds to the activities that the children enjoy. A good nursery should also supply age-appropriate and culturally diverse toys, books and displays as these will support the growth of your little one
and encourage imaginative play. Most good day nurseries will also have an outdoor play area, or at the very least, should take the children on visits to the local park.
Policies: From opening and closing times to dealing with emergencies, a day nursery should have clear procedures for everything related to your child's care. A key worker policy is also something to look out for - a policy that ensures your child is working towards their developmental goals with the support and observation of one particular member of staff. A good nursery should also have an open-door policy that allows you to visit your little one at any time and speak with their key worker. Finally, have a look into any mealtime policies to ensure that the nursery provides a variety of fresh, nutritious options as well as caters to any dietary needs, if applicable. Good luck with the search!

The ‘purrfect’ day out
LET THE GAMES BEGIN! If you’re looking for an outdoor activity that is entertaining and a little bit different this summer, look no further than the Kingsmen Activity Centre in Riccall. Led by experienced instructors, these exciting activities - Axe Throwing, Air Rifle Range and Archery - are suitable for beginners and mixed abilities alike. As well as being super informative, these sessions are great fun and the perfect choice for groups, stag and hen parties and corporate days. In fact, some of our YLL squad headed over to the centre last month and we had an absolute blast. It was a great team-building day and an excellent opportunity to suss out exactly who we wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of (not mentioning anyone in particular…ahem… Mim!) Parking is available at the site and there are tea and coffee facilities too. As this is an outdoor venue, make sure that you’re dressed for the weather - although
Viking fancy dress is also highly encouraged. So whether you come for the banter, to celebrate special occasion or to learn a new skill, prepare to bring your A game. Are there age restrictions? Activity packages are designed for individuals over the age of 14 years only. Teens must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Where to find them? You'll find the centre at the Viking Heritage City of York, and just on the edge of Skipwith Common, a beautifully local protected nature reserve. For more information or to book your place visit www. kinsmenactivitycentreyork.co.uk.
ROCK ‘N’ ROLL IS THE ANSWER! Can you imagine dancing your way back to health? How much more would you enjoy getting active if you could have some fun? They boost serotonin levels: Bananas contain an essential amino acid called tryptophan.“Tryptophan helps to produce serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation”, Lee explains. As our bodies are unable to produce tryptophan, eating a banana will naturally boost serotonin levels, leading to better relaxation. They help to ease muscle cramps: If muscle stiffness keeps you awake at night, it could be because your potassium levels are low. The extra potassium from eating a banana helps stop and start muscle contractions, therefore easing those stubborn night cramps. They help you stress less: Bananas are also rich in magnesium, a mineral that affects the release of our hormones. When our magnesium levels are low, our stress hormones increase. Lee continues, “Stress and anxiety are often associated with sleep disorders like insomnia, so a banana might be the perfect snack to help calm down before going to sleep.” Visit www.eachnight.com to find our more.

SPEND YOUR JOLLIES IN JAPAN! This month we caught up with our friends at Inside Japan Tours sharing our excitement that after over two long years, Japan has finally begun reopening its borders to tourists. You cannot think of a trip to Japan without picturing the likes of geisha, sumo wrestling and cherry blossoms (and trust us – these are not to be missed!). However, there is so much more to offer here with a wealth of activities, experiences, sights and tastes for you to enjoy. For the best in traditional Japanese culture, take a tour through the temples of Kyoto on a private Zen Buddhism walk or explore the ancient art of woodblock printing and pottery design in Takayama. Adrenaline junkies can dive through the shipwrecks of tropical Okinawa or ski on the Olympic slopes of Nagoya. Hiking, a Japanese pastime, is found throughout the country but trips to the
historic Nakasendo Way for its stunning 17th-century preserved villages are not to be missed. For families, look no further than the arcades of Akihabara, Disneyland Tokyo & Taiko drumming lessons. And, when talking about the best of Japan we cannot pass the opportunity to talk about food. Whilst sushi and ramen are staples across the world, so much more can be said about food in Japan. From golden ice cream in Kanazawa and the market halls of Hiroshima filled with Okonomiyaki grills, or warming shabu which is best enjoyed on a snowy day. No matter your tastes, Japan has something for you. Even though the borders have been closed for over two years, one thing we are certain of is that you will receive the warmest of welcomes in Japan. Omotenashi (to wholeheartedly look after guests) is ingrained in Japanese culture. No matter where
you stay or who you see, a familiar smile and welcome will follow you throughout your trip, leaving you to wonder whether you wish to leave Japan at all! Opening rules: Whilst the reopening is a great step forward, there are still some restrictions in place for tourism in Japan. Organised group tours are currently only operating with self-guided, tailor-made travel expected to return by the end of summer. Visitors to Japan need to register with an approved tour provider prior to travel and they currently require a visitor visa to enter Japan (which we expect to be removed imminently as per pre-covid regulations.) If you would like to discuss travel possibilities, get in touch on 01904 623444, or call in to see us at 88 Main Street, Fulford. We look forward to speaking to you.

Yes. It’s time. It is officially summer which means that barbecuing becomes an obligatory way of life for the next couple of months and we’re all for it. If you’re looking for inspiration for your alfresco feasts, we have the perfect suggestions to get you started:
The Future Burger by Future Farm £3.90 from www. futurefarm.io If you’re looking for a meat alternative or you’re simply just wanting to be more adventurous, look no further than the Future Farm burgers. Two to a pack and with a generous use-by date, these evolutionary vegan burgers use True Texture TechnologyTM to achieve a similar texture, flavour and juiciness of meat. If burgers aren’t quite your bag, they also do sausages, mince and meatballs - all made from 100% natural soy, pea and chickpea proteins. Powters Scrumpy Pig Sausages £3.55 from powters-butchers. co.uk Great for barbecue season, these bangers are the absolute bomb! Packed with flavour, these tasty pork sausages by Powters Butchers & Deli are infused with zesty apple and sweet cider - a combination that makes for the ultimate treat. Pair them with some wholegrain
mustard or red onion chutney and you have yourself a sarnie fit for champions. If you fancy going the extra mile, Powters also offer other delicious sausages and meats, such as wings, burgers, steaks and koftas - you’ll certainly be spoiled for choice. Tracklements Special Edition Coriander & Chilli Chutney £3.75 from www.tracklements.co.uk The perfect dipper for flatbreads or for slathering over juicy burgers, kebabs, and delicious meats, this special edition Indian chutney is certainly worth a try if you’re looking for food with flavour. Packed with fiery spices, green chilies and coriander, this delectable chutney is gluten-free and suitable for vegans too. Everdure CUBE™ by Heston Blumenthal £179 from everdurebyheston.co.uk Fit for a world-class chef, we love this awardwinning barbecue that is perfect for on-the-go grilling. With a foodgrade storage tray, smart preparation board and durable, porcelain enamel firebox, it is super simple to set up, cook, clean and store. Fuelled by charcoal, this barbie can sizzle up to approximately six small burgers or three medium-sized steaks at a time, and its chrome handles ensure that heat is kept to a minimum when transporting from A to B.
