Lauren and David didn’t invest too much time worrying about everyone else’s opinion of how their day should be. “Your wedding day is just that – your wedding day, and you should do it how you want,” she says, “you want to be able to look back at your wedding day and say that you loved everything about it, and that it was a representation of you as a couple, and your lives together.” They first met in 2016 at the swim school where they both worked. It then took a little over a year before they officially started dating each other. During their relationship, David had planned to propose to Lauren on multiple occasions, but issues kept arising. His desire to involve Alpacas (her favourite animal) in his surprise proposal proved to be difficult. Finally, between floods and businesses backing out after initially showing interest – he decided enough was enough. One afternoon he decided he didn’t want to wait any longer. He made up a story about wanting to photograph the sunset over the Brindabella Mountains to Lauren, and off they went! When they arrived at Shepherds Lookout, he asked Lauren to be in the photo so he could get shots of her looking at the mountains – meanwhile, dropping to one knee as she looked away. “He managed to capture the exact moment I turned around - and asked me to marry him,” she recalls. They had close to a year to plan their special day. Lauren remembers how much she enjoyed the process. “Luckily we both had similar ideas of what we wanted our day to look like, so planning the day was easy,” she says.

They both agreed that they wanted their wedding to be fun and relaxed, and worked hard to ensure they achieved it. The three main things they paid most attention to were food, music, and photography. Guests loved the food, and the buffet style Lauren and David chose for their reception at Hotel Realm. “The buffet style meant that you didn’t have to do the alternate serve swap around the table for people to get the meal they wanted, or liked more,” she says, “everyone got what they wanted and were able to get seconds and thirds.” Having a live band for both their ceremony and reception was also something their guests enjoyed. “The band brought a vibe with them that we felt you wouldn’t get with a DJ or single musician.” Their other important decision was choosing their photographer. “We were very lucky that we had already seen the amazing photos Mark and his team produce from other weddings we have attended,” she says. One of the things that made them choose Mark in the first place was his style of photos and his ability to capture people’s personalities within the photos. Both agree that he was great through the whole planning process and on their wedding day. He took the time to meet them in person prior to signing a contract, and discussed the kinds of photos they were keen on and those they weren’t. Lauren adds, “We love how Mark allowed us to be ourselves in our photos, and how natural they all look because he ‘got us’ as a couple and made sure we got photos that were a true representation of our relationship.” Before their wedding day arrived, both enjoyed a hen and buck’s getaway. Lauren rented a house on the beach in Callala Bay, where with her bridesmaids and a few close friends, they relaxed and enjoyed stand up paddle boarding. David and his groomsmen meanwhile, travelled down the coast, and then met up with a bigger group of friends for axe throwing and pitch and putt on their return to Canberra.

On their wedding day, they were blessed with beautiful weather. Thankfully so, because Lauren had said they were getting married in the Brassey Gardens, irrespective of the weather. They didn’t like the venue’s wet weather option, so were understandably very happy with their fine day. David’s parents travelled from the UK, and they also had guests from Vienna and Austria joining them. However, most of their family and friends travelled from within Australia. “For us, it was really meaningful to have our celebrant, Michael Bower marry us,” Lauren says. He had been the celebrant for both her sister’s wedding, and her brother’s wedding. And they were so thankful when he moved personal plans he had on the day, so that he was able to be there to marry them, and then MC their reception. He was also the person their suppliers and the reception staff at Hotel Realm, spoke to on the day. “This really helped with us being able to enjoy our day and not be bogged down with making small decisions or adjustments to the timeline – Michael knew what we wanted from our day and made sure it happened.” Lauren and David had so much fun at their reception, chatting and dancing with their family and friends. They received multiple comments from their guests about Mark and the team, “how they just fitted in so well to the wedding that they were able to capture true moments as people felt relaxed around them.“ Lauren says, “We cannot thank Mark enough for all the moments he captured at our wedding and the amazing photos we now have to remember our day for forever with.”

“One thing we both really enjoyed on the day is the energy Mark and his team bring. They are fun and vibrant and make you feel relaxed during the 1000’s of photos they take on the day.” “We wanted it to be fun and everyone to have a great time. And from the pictures and videos of our reception, I would say that was achieved,” she says. “We were incredibly lucky that all the suppliers we chose were amazing and really worked with David and I so that we got the day we wanted.” Lauren and David spent their wedding night in a suite at Hotel Realm as part of their wedding package. Then close to three months later, they boarded a cruise to the South Pacific Islands, visiting Noumea, Mystery Island and Vanuatu for their honeymoon. Lauren & David’s wedding advice:

“If you are finding the planning stressful, the best thing I did was talk to our suppliers with any questions or issues I was having. While I was planning my first wedding, this was not their first wedding, and they have seen it all. I also found our suppliers would ask us questions I would never have thought about, and they helped us with backup plans if something went wrong on the day. Also, don’t worry if things go wrong on the day, your guests are not going to know that something has gone wrong as they don’t know what you have planned. The great thing about weddings is that everyone wants them to go well, so if something goes wrong, most of the time your suppliers will work together to find a solution.”

While he was building his custom race car, David, a mechanic was a regular customer at Supercheap Autos, where Susan worked. A few months later, when Susan brought her newly adopted puppy to work with her, it was the perfect opportunity for David. He approached her to “meet the puppy” and then also asked for her phone number. A few days later they went on their first date! Almost a year and a half later, when David suggested a drive up to Mount Ainslie after dinner at their favourite Japanese restaurant, Susan thought nothing of it. Mount Ainslie had been a special place for them since David had taken her there on their first date. “I thought we were celebrating me starting my new job,” she says. But David had other plans. As they watched the storm roll in, he proposed! “He didn’t quite get down on one knee as I heard the rustling as he got the ring out of his wallet and may have crash tackled him before he got all the way down,” she says. Susan and David gave themselves 12 months to plan their wedding - but with her planning and organising, and his reviewing and approving, they had it all organised in 6 to 7 months. This left only minor details to sort out in the lead up to their wedding day.

David chose his suit on his own, but Susan found it difficult to go dress shopping without her mum and step mum. They didn’t live in Canberra, so it was not easy to schedule a suitable time to get together. But the hardest part was sorting out their guest list. They both had large families and many of them lived outside of Canberra. Eventually, they decided on a guest list totalling 73, with guests travelling from Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sunshine Coast, Sydney, and locally from Canberra to attend their wedding. It was cold and overcast on their special day. “Coldest day in January that year,” says Susan, “Got to 18. Suited David and I fine, but you could tell who the out-of-towners were.” The overcast day worked perfectly for their photos though. Melissa, from A Shot Above the Rest, who was a close friend, photographed their wedding. “Having her there to capture our day and also help with the planning – it made it easy and meant a lot to us.” Susan fondly remembers their wedding, saying, “We had a lot of humour in our ceremony with David pulling out a sock rather than the ring.” She explains that it was a funny reference to when they first moved in together, where David would hide socks around the house. She says, “If I didn’t know my life would always be filled with laughter before - I did then!” Another memorable moment was having her best friend, Emma walking down the aisle and standing with them. “Emma had been battling brain cancer for nearly two years, and we were not sure she would make it to our day,” says Susan. Emma passed away six weeks after their wedding, but the photo of them together sits on their mantlepiece in remembrance. “Her being there for us meant the world,” says Susan. Seeing Susan walking down the aisle in her wedding gown was a special moment for David also and the highlight of his day.

He says, “I knew then, that was the beginning of the rest of my life.” David’s dad loves woodwork and gave their wedding a personal touch by making their table numbers, a seating plan frame, and their Mr & Mrs sign and easel. Their ceremony and reception were both held at Royal Hotel Queanbeyan, and they agree it was, “Amazing. Food service, everything was exceptional,” they say. “We had so many compliments that night and after. We cannot thank Matt and Bianca enough and recommend them every chance we get.” Susan and David were thankful that they also catered for coeliacs. “David is a ‘sensitive coeliac,” she says, “and we have four friends with the same autoimmune disease. We also had a lot of other dietary requirements, but again the hotel handled it in their stride.” After their reception ended, they didn’t have far to go. “We spent the night at the hotel, and my goodness it was lovely,” she says. “Modern, comfy and we had plenty of time in the morning to pack up. We even got a complimentary breakfast at the café below.” “David and I are very happy with our wedding experience. The Royal Hotel Queanbeyan made it the most easy and pleasurable event and a huge shout out to Matt and Bianca for going above and beyond for us. We also had amazing support from Mel, our photographer and Val, our celebrant who was very intuitive and engaged in making our ceremony special.”

For their honeymoon, they took three weeks off and drove over to Perth and back with their camper trailer. Susan says, “We saw a lot of wildlife, and some spectacular scenery. We met some amazing people and were humbled by the history and stories we discovered.” And they say, they’re already planning their next getaway. “We also plan to complete a few seasons in the race car that David built from the ground up – and exploit our competitive spirit.” Susan & David’s wedding advice:

“Honestly…take a deep breath and just go with your gut. At the end of the day, it will all play out. Plan and plan as much as needed and find the compromise. It’s about you both, so do things you both want, and be willing to meet in the middle. Also, family drama is a thing – it can be hard. Be honest and pick the battles that mean the most.”

Meeting on a dating app, Chris asked Rachel on a date four times before she finally said yes to him. For their first date, they made plans to have a few drinks at the Tatts at Goulburn before dinner at Samara Thai. They never made it to dinner though. Instead, they sat and drank, and talked all night. On the day of Chris’ surprise proposal, Rachel was working. A hairdresser, she was busy doing hair for a wedding that day and was then attending the wedding that evening. “And Chris, well he was playing cricket,” she laughs. But that wasn’t all he was doing. Chris was busy laying the groundwork for his surprise romantic proposal later that night. When Rachel arrived home from the wedding, he suggested they go check on the progress of their house they were building. When they arrived, Rachel says, “I walked into the bedroom and when I saw the rose petals on the floor, I actually thought some teenagers had broken into our house.” Chris motioned her to the wardrobe, so she popped her head in, and saw a Liverpool soccer jersey hanging up. “Chris is a hardcore Liverpool fan – me, not so much, so I was like, oh thanks so much babe.” When she turned the jersey around and noticed R. Arnold 23, she didn’t quite know what to think (Arnold is Chris’ surname). It all made sense when she turned around though. “Chris was down on one knee and asked the big question,” she says.

They both agree that they had plenty of time to plan their wedding in 11 months. It was important to Rachel and Chris that they find an amazing photographer and videographer so they would remember their special moments. They chose Zinette Hopper Photography and Storytellers Wedding Co, who they say, “were absolutely amazing”. And their venue, The Old Coach Stables in Gunning was perfect for their rustic boho themed wedding. She didn’t worry too much about a hairstylist. “I’m a hairdresser, so I wasn’t too bothered – I ended up doing everyone’s hair,” she recalls. Before their wedding day arrived, they both enjoyed a hen and buck’s party. “Chris had a buck’s party which was a fiveday cruise,” she laughs, “and I had a hen weekend away in the city with my girls.” Their guests arrived from all over New South Wales for their special day. The weather was perfect – 26 degrees with a soft breeze, the sun beaming. A special memory of their ceremony was having Rachel’s nan read the poem that Chris’ nan had read at every wedding she attended prior to her passing. It was a lovely way to honour her memory and continue the tradition. “Our guests said our wedding was relaxed, fun, and full of love,” says Rachel. Their reception had amazing vibes, they recall, but they just wish they had more time to talk with their guests. Apart from that, they say, “we thought our day was pretty spot on.” www.WeddingGuide.com.au

They recall how their photographer knew how to make everything amazing, and helped the day run smoothy. “Our photographers were absolute legends,” she says, “couldn’t have asked for better.” The Old Coach Stables, Gunning was their dream venue. Run by the amazing Melinda, they say it exceeded their expectations. In fact, all their vendors surpassed their expectations. That night, they stayed at a beautiful Airbnb - Hazel House in Goulburn. Rachel and Chris then spent their honeymoon at the Mirage Whitsundays, at Airlie Beach. “Our whole honeymoon was amazing from snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef, jet skiing through the island, dinner cruise in the bay, Whitehaven Beach is to die for – absolutely stunning, down to our two-story waterfront villa with the view of the ocean and the occasional turtle.” Rachel & Chris’ wedding advice:

The uniqueness of Charly and Nathan’s wedding was undeniable. Walking down the aisle to “Sexomatic Venus Freak” by Macy Grey, a Wayne’s World style singalong to “Bohemian Rhapsody”, a plush dog toss in place of a bouquet toss, and a totally blinged out dog pram so their dogs could go down the aisle in style, were but a few of the distinctive features of their wedding. It was no less than 18 years ago when Charly and Nathan first met outside a bar on Oxford Street in Sydney. On their first New Year’s Eve together, Nathan told Charly he wanted to marry her. It then took them almost 18 years to actually get married. Creating a wedding celebration that truly represented them and brought joy to their families was foremost in their minds as they planned their special day. In keeping with their fantasy wedding theme, they made personalised centrepieces based on their favourite fantasy themes and games, such as Final Fantasy and Dr. Who. They also planned a photobooth, personalised menus, a song list, and a quiz to encourage mingling and conversation. Charly says, “I think one of the best aspects of planning means that you get to relive a lot of your lives together through stories.” That was certainly the case for them as they say they were “crying laughing’ as they recounted to their celebrant, the stories of how they met each other and their early years together.

“As someone that loves fashion, the outfits were always going to be a big deal to me. Thankfully I found Bibian Blue fairly early in the process and was able to find my dress and the bridesmaids’ kimonos through her, and then work everything else around them,” she says. Finally, the day that they had spent 20 months planning for, arrived. An Autumn day, it wasn’t too windy, and the sun was shining for their outdoor ceremony at Flagstaff Hill, Wollongong. 90 guests from New Zealand, Queensland, the ACT, Sydney, and Wollongong were due to arrive. However, Charly, Nathan, and their bridal party were in a spot of bother. Their wedding car had broken down, so there was a last-minute scramble for transport. With the help of family, friends, and the Illawarra Taxi Network, they eventually made it to their wedding ceremony. Then Coastwise Limousines & Quality Cruisers came to their rescue and transported them to their photo locations and back to their reception. Charly states, “but this is not your normal car breakdown story. My husband’s dad, David, died a few years ago, so many of us were missing him dearly that day. David was a known prankster and pulled off some truly incredible pranks in his time, not only that, but David’s car broke down on his wedding day too, so it really felt like David finding a cheeky little way to still be involved with our day.” Charly and Nathan personalised every aspect of their wedding day as they wanted every moment to feel meaningful. “There isn’t a single moment I look back on that doesn’t fill my entire being with joy,” she says. But being detail orientated was also a necessity for Charly as there were a lot of extra details that she had to consider due to her chronic pain condition. She says, “My bouquet, my dresses, shoes, where we got married, where we stayed, and where we were photographed were all guided by my disability.” Her suppliers, however, were very supportive so it took a lot of stress off her.

“I thought I’d have to make a lot of sacrifices to be in a state to enjoy the whole day,” she says, but “thankfully, with some very careful planning, some amazing personal support, and truly incredible suppliers, I was able to have a dream wedding that encompassed everything that is important for us. Every vendor did things to accommodate my condition and all of those things mean the absolute world to my husband and I.” Charly and Nathan loved their reception venue, City Beach Function Centre. “The views are exquisite, the food is divine, the service is impeccable, the rooms themselves are absolutely beautiful, and then the staff take it to beyond breathtaking with everything they do to achieve your aesthetic.” And the MC and DJ provided by City Beach Function Centre really added to their evening. “We had an extremely eclectic song list, but the DJ mixed it to absolute perfection and ensured everyone had a great time,” she says. Their MC was incredibly entertaining they say, “though it was the kindness he showed to our family members when their grief took hold that I’ll remember the most fondly,” she says. Their fantasy themed centrepieces and their quiz were loved by their guests, and Charly says she had endless compliments about her dress. “My absolute favourite of those was being told by a teenage girl that the two dresses reminded her of Katniss Everdeen,” she says, “and I don’t think a teenage girl can pay a higher fashion compliment.” They ended their night with, “My Way” by Sid Vicious, and then spent their wedding night at a beautiful Airbnb.

Charly and Nathan’s wedding advice:

“Breathe! No matter how well you plan, it’s likely something will go wrong but months later that wrong is something you’ll both laugh about as long as you’re able to just breathe through it and not let it overcome you. For all brides, but especially brides like me that are dealing with a physical disability, don’t be afraid to ask. Many wedding dress designers will customise around your disability and if your store or desired designer doesn’t, don’t be afraid to ask them if they can recommend someone that can. I wanted a big bouquet with a bit of drapery but had to be super aware of weight, so my florist went looking for the lightest possible flowers in my colour scheme. My celebrant brought a tiny little chair that was kept at hand just in case I needed to sit during the ceremony. City Beach Function Centre even changed the run order of our reception at the last minute for me, as I needed time to just sit and medicate before doing my first dance with my husband.” “I felt so surrounded by love and joy through the whole process, from the planning through to the wedding. Then to have that culminate in such a perfect day where I got to marry my best friend and share that with all our loved ones still feels like something out of a fairy-tale.”

It’s not often that we associate calmness with weddings, but for Jess and James, a calm vibe was everything. Combined with their ‘a dash of pink’ theme, their wedding was relaxed, meaningful, and uniquely theirs. Their love story began when Jess and James met in 2014. Fast forward to 2021, and James, with his family and their pets all looking on – proposed to Jess on Christmas Day. Jess says, “we had 14 months and planned the whole way through so that we could pay for the things as we went, and the lead up wasn’t stressful because we already had everything sorted.” Jess and James honoured Jess’ mum’s memory with their ‘a dash of pink’ wedding theme as this was her favourite colour. Jess included pink in their florals, signage, décor, and her wedding shoes – not to mention her gorgeous pink reception outfit! Before the arrival of their special day, James returned to his hometown, Adelaide, to celebrate with his friends. Jess’s bridesmaids surprised her with a lovely dinner the week before the wedding.

The day of their wedding arrived, and it was amazing, says Jess. It was forecast to storm and snow, but instead they had perfect blue skies. Luckily for them, the snow held off until the following day. Their wedding brought guests from everywhere. Jess’s sister travelled from Paris, and other guests arrived from Ireland, Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne. Jess surprised herself with how calm she was while walking down the aisle. “It was so much fun,” she says. “It didn’t even occur to me to cry, because the sun was shining, my favourite human was at the end…” The only thing she says she would have changed is to have less time in-between their first look and their ceremony. Guests loved their wedding. “It was a beautiful mix of country meets city,” she says. “It was super relaxed, which is just how we wanted it.” Jess and James both wanted to create a calm vibe, and their venue, The Old Coach Stables, could not have done more. Their seasonal food was incredible, she recalls, and Melissa from the venue was a dream to work with. “They are exceptional, nothing is too much fuss or too hard,” she says.

Jess was also really impressed with her hairstylist, Amanda from AJ Hair and Bridal. “I did a 2-hour trial which included 3-4 different styles, then on the day I wanted something completely different, and Amanda nailed it. She hung around to help with the veil, and until we left, to make any small changes. She was incredible to work with.” Their wedding was uniquely theirs – they didn’t include what they didn’t think was necessary. A first dance, a bouquet toss, and wedding games were all shelved. Jess says, “It was exactly how we wanted it, which meant we were both so calm the whole time and were able to enjoy the day in its entirety.” Their photographer, Melissa from A Shot Above the Rest, captured their wedding day beautifully. Having had their engagement portraits with Melissa earlier, they booked her for their wedding also, after falling in love with the relaxed style of those portraits. There was no fuss, just lots of fun involved in capturing their amazing photos on their wedding day.

Jess and James spent their wedding night at Little National, in Barton, followed by ten amazing days in the Whitsundays, at Palm Bay Resort. Jess & James’ wedding advice:

“Stay calm and just chill out – it’s not the be all and end all, things go wrong but who cares! Plan for what you can and accept what you can’t plan for – if you accept the day for what it is, you’ll have so much more fun! We loved every second because it was all just so relaxed (while still being planned and what we wanted). Have fun and be authentic.

WEDDING STYLING & HIRE

When it comes to wedding styling, we often put weddings into categories such as rustic, bohemian, vintage to name a few. In reality though, every wedding is unique and these categories are not meant to be rigid, but more a framework to work with and take from it what appeals to you. Professional wedding stylists can decorate your ceremony right through to your reception in a way that reflects who you are as a couple. They can help you narrow down your wedding ‘look’ and supply you with beautiful decor to suit your style.

Preparation can start as soon as you’re engaged, as hair and makeup trials, health plans and treatments often take place weeks or even months prior. Take the time to look at various options so you’ll feel happy and confident on the day.

CAKES Your wedding dress, your chosen venue, your stationery, your transport; all of these things combine to communicate the style of your wedding. The same goes for your wedding cake. A work of art, it proudly sits atop it’s pedestal revealing your unique wedding style to guests as they arrive at your reception. As well as looking amazing, your wedding cake should taste exceptional, so if possible make an appointment to sample a few different flavours to find that perfect blend.

OUR TIP Allow your cake designer to organise the delivery of your wedding cake to ensure it gets to your reception intact.

bomboniere

BOMBONIERE

It is a nice idea to leave your guests something to take home as a token of appreciation for their attendance and gifts. ‘Bomboniere’ is an Italian word meaning ‘sweet favour’ (French Bonbonniere), and in Australia the word has come to represent the small gift the married couple gives to each reception guest. Traditionally a bag of five sugared almonds to signify health, wealth, happiness, long life and fertility, bomboniere now takes many forms.

flowers

FLOWERS Flowers offer an instant splash of beauty and colour to your wedding day. Used in bouquets, headpieces, table centrepieces, cakes, arbours, backdrops and boutonnieres, they play an important role in adding the final touches to create the perfect look for your wedding. TIPS ON SELECTING YOUR FLOWERS Decide on the colour theme for your wedding before choosing your flowers.

Check on the availability

of your preferred flowers - are they in season at the time of your wedding?

Ensure that the flowers

you’ve selected will last in the weather conditions.

Think about how you will

carry your bouquet - make sure it will be easy to handle.

Book an appointment with your florist to discuss your ideas.
