DESIGNER FAVOURITES

I’M IN LOVE WITH THIS GORGEOUS GOWN ‘PENELOPE’ BY ROSA CLARA FROM HER SS18/19 COUTURE COLLECTION. THIS GOWN EPITOMISES THE BRIDES OF TODAY, SOPHISTICATED AND NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL. What are the outstanding features of this gown? This gown is seductive with its beaded chantilly lace long sleeve bodice and crepe skirt shaping over the body with a sweeping train and split detail. It’s sheer illusion lined bodice is quite incredible, the plunging V neckline is flattering but not revealing. The soft nude in the bodice gives you warmth to your complexion giving you the opportunity to have a natural glam make-up look. My Brides want to feel comfortable and be (jaw dropping) beautiful when they walk down the aisle. There are no rules or regulations to what you should wear. My priority is for my Bride to feel comfortable and confident.

www.WeddingGuide.com.au

38512 Ed - Designer Favourites.indd 1

What style would describe this dress? This gown is natural glamour. It’s wonderful that we’re entering an exciting time for woman, a celebration of being you, a beautiful woman. What accessories would be the perfect match for this gown? To complete the look, I would add a medium sized tear drop earring with a very sheer long veil past the train. If you’re not a veil person then an elegant headpiece, to catch your hair on the short side of your part just behind your ear. Remember your accessories finish your look, invest in quality pieces. This gown will showcase your shoes, choose something you love. Maybe a designer shoe you’ve always wanted or even something blue.

10

2/1/19 11:42 am

Your advice to the bride keen to wear this style? Stay away from shoes with ankle straps as they shorten the leg line. We quite like a nude or soft champagne coloured shoe with a split - your legs will look never ending. Buy some dancing shoes for later in the night, your feet will thank you. This style has a long sleeve which isn’t for everyone, ask your consultant for assistance and they will make sure you feel confident and beautiful in your gown.

NATURAL PHOTOS

Candid style shots are still popular with couples leaning towards a more authentic look to their photos - less formal, posed type shots and more natural, free form images. No deer in the headlights shots here thanks!

THE FIRST LOOK Around 2016 saw the introduction of ‘The First Look’, a trend where couples meet up before the ceremony to get shots with each other. The sense of anticipation and the chance to spend some special time together before the formality of their wedding begins makes for emotional, powerful and natural photos. Now a new form of a ‘first look’ has started to appear - that of the father-daughter ‘First Look’. If you share that special bond with your father, how special would it be to have photos of a special shared moment together as well.

HASHTAG

ATMOSPHERIC SHOTS

Taking advantage of the natural beauty surrounding them, photographers are creating some breathtaking photos for weddings. With these shots, the couple are the focal point, but are captured within a setting that shows them to be a small part of a much larger picture. Many couples are keen to follow this trend as it can produce powerfully emotive images. Moody shots at dusk or dawn, dark cloudy skies or vast starry nights are sought after for their dramatic and timeless quality.

23

38516 - 38517 Ed - Photography Trends.indd 1

When it comes to social media, it’s good to let your guests know where you stand. Some couples really don’t want their wedding photos splashed all over social media, while other couples create a Hashtag and encourage their guests to take lots of candid shots to share online. If you’d like your photographer to capture your guests’ reactions at your ceremony, and not their latest iPhones covering their faces, then an Unplugged wedding may be the way to go. If you have strong views either way, make it clear to all of your guests before your ceremony (or your Celebrant can make an announcement for you).

MATTHEW + SARAH Sarah was unimpressed with her parents decision to relocate to a small rural town when she finished High School. “I took a gap year between finishing high school and going to university and started working at the Taralga Hotel to make some money of my own” she remembers. “I was adamant I wouldn’t be staying…but I served Matt at the bar one night, and the rest is history.” “Ours truly is a once in a lifetime love and I will be forever grateful for the series of events that led me to Matt” says Sarah. Sarah and Matthew went on to spend the next 14 years together, enjoying a relationship filled with lots of love and laughter. Then on Sarah’s birthday, as she finished hanging out the clothes she was surprised to find a little box at the bottom of the clothes basket. As she looked up, she remembers Matt standing there with a massive grin on his face. The same giant smile was there to greet Sarah when she met Matt at the end of the aisle on their special day. “One of the stand out memories of the day, was how happy Matt was…” she says.

Ours truly is a once in a lifetime love...

Sarah loved every minute of their wedding day, from getting ready, to the drive out to the ceremony, to their vows - and dancing the night away until 3am! She was surprised at how nervous she got before the ceremony and how emotional she was during the vows and her speech. “I remember walking down the aisle and trying to avoid eye contact with everyone as I held back tears,” she says. “I think I was a little overwhelmed with emotion and just so full of love and happiness. It was maybe even a little bit of shock after 14 years together that we were actually getting married.” Sarah and Matt wanted to ensure their day was intimate, relaxed and incorporated aspects of them as a couple. They had their Grandmothers sign their marriage certificate, their Mothers presented them with their rings during the Ceremony, and they were married in Matt’s parents’ garden. Sarah wore her Mum’s garter and her Dad built the arbour. “These little touches added special meaning to our day and really personalised it for us” she remembers.

The majority of their 90 guests were Taralga locals, but some travelled from Sydney, Wollongong, the Southern Highlands and Goulburn. All witnessed the love and happiness shared by Matt and Sarah. After a touching ceremony they enjoyed a lively reception at The Argyle Inn, Taralga, with many guests commenting on the attention to detail with the candlelight and gold accents perfectly tying in with the white florals and greenery. They enjoyed a superb menu followed by an equally decadent 4 tier cake, made by Sarah’s close friend. This amazing cake had so many flavours which included, orange and poppy seed with homemade orange curd, Lemon mud with raspberry coulis and homemade lemon curd, white chocolate mud with caramel swirl and peanut brittle crunch and Black Forest.

In the early hours of the morning, Sarah and Matt spent the remainder of their wedding night at The Argyle Inn, Taralga and then hosted breakfast there the next morning with their parents, which 50 of their guests attended. For their honeymoon, Matt organised a road trip through outback New South Wales and Queensland, to Port Douglas and back. Seeing opal fields, gorges, waterfalls and so many sights along the way. They then enjoyed total relaxation for five nights in a penthouse apartment at Coconut Grove Resort with their own private roof top pool and spa. Sarah admits, “ We ate wonderful food, drank too much and just enjoyed each others company as a new husband and wife.” Sarah’s best wedding advice:

Savour every moment on the day as it all goes by too quickly and also don’t sweat the small stuff. I am a bit of a control freak so it was difficult on the day to sit back and let the wedding coordinator take the reins, but that’s what they are there for and in the end I honestly couldn’t tell you if the garlands or decorations were exactly where I had said I wanted them, or if all the candles were lit - but everything was perfect to us. All that really matters is the two of you being together and celebrating and enjoying your special day surrounded by your family and friends.

“A Shot Above The Rest was recommended to us by a close friend after I expressed my angst in choosing a wedding photographer from the huge amount of providers available. It’s now my turn to pass on the recommendations and I cannot speak highly enough of our experience with Mel. From the moment I contacted her I knew we were on a winner and when we met in person I was without a doubt that she was the photographer for us. Mel is warm, welcoming, friendly, fun and incredibly talented - her pictures speak for themselves. The quality of her work is second to none, she is a true professional and she has an incredible ability to make everyone around her comfortable, enabling her to really capture the emotion of all the moments that make up the day. It’s wonderful to watch her work and bring her vision to life. In a word, Mel is brilliant at what she does and we are overjoyed that we had her capture our special day. Words cannot describe how beautiful our wedding photographs are, we will treasure them forever. Thank you Mel, all our photographs are absolutely stunning and we have had so many people comment on the quality of our images, the attention to detail and the scenery you captured. You are incredibly gifted at what you do and we are so grateful to you for capturing our wedding day so perfectly.” Sarah.

DRONES

Not just for videography, Drones are also being incorporated into wedding photography more often, creating unique wedding photos. With drones capable of taking photos from original angles that otherwise wouldn’t be able to be captured, a whole new perspective on weddings is now available and becoming more commonplace. Red Photography

TEASERS

Next day teasers, where 10-20 edited wedding photos are available for the couple is a popular trend. It makes waiting for a wedding album - which can take some time, much more bearable.

VINTAGE STYLE

Many couples are opting for black and white photos, adopting a vintage style look to record their day. Some couples are going a step further and employing the use of film to create softer style shots in contrast to the sharp digital shots of modern day photos. The Filmic look is timeless and classical, with the use of black and white giving a photo journalistic feel to the images.

SAME DAY EDITS

Some couples may prefer to have a Same Day Edit so they can have a slideshow at their reception to show their guests, but they need to check carefully with their photographer to ensure that by requesting this, their photographer doesn’t miss out on good photo opportunities on the day, due to being busy making the slideshow. If more than one photographer is shooting your wedding, then there may be no need for concern. It’s a great idea as long as the important stuff on the day is still being captured.

ORIGINAL IMAGES Originality in wedding photos is definitely in, with cookie cutter weddings out! With social media, we are all exposed to so much more and the last thing we want is to see other weddings looking exactly like our own. Originality is key.

SMOKE BOMBS

Another addition to wedding photography is the use of smoke bombs. These can be used to add that pop of colour (as well as keep your wedding party entertained), or add a touch of drama to your images.

the universe works in weird and wonderful ways...

Lara and Gonz picked the perfect song for their wedding in Christina Peri’s, “A Thousand Years”. Having first met each other nearly 30 years ago, when Lara was only around 10 years old, they have known each other for a long time… Growing up as a best friend to Lara’s brother, Gonz was like family, but they both led completely separate lives as they grew up in Canberra. It was not until 30 years later that they once again crossed paths. “I never thought that we’d meet up in our forties in Queensland, let alone get married,” says Lara, “the universe works in weird and wonderful ways.” She says, “Our only regret is that we didn’t meet up in our twenties…”

After proposing to Gonz on top of the Glasshouse Mountains in Queensland, they set about planning for their special day. With family still in Canberra, Lara and Gonz made plans for a winter wedding in Canberra, from Brisbane where they both lived. Though challenging, they managed to pull it all together. Lara admits that she wasn’t a high maintenance bride and was happy to outsource jobs to her supportive friends and family.

“We loved the country atmosphere of the Homestead”, but admits that Canberra in the middle of winter was a bit crazy. “I think a lot of people were looking for the bonfires by the end of the night” she says. But it was perfect for beautiful photos. “Crystal clear blue Canberra winter skies” she remembers. While some guests travelled from Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, the majority lived in the ACT. With their 40 guests in attendance, Lara and Gonzalo were married on 14th July 2018 in a Civil ceremony at Tuggeranong Homestead. They then celebrated with their guests to the beat of a local Chilean Band called Jorge.

They enjoyed a Banquet style menu and two gorgeous wedding cakes made by Leigh, Lara’s Aunty, who also organised the table decorations and makeup. Their Photographer, Bec Fassone from Bad Cat Photography was a lovely surprise for them. Says Lara, “My wonderful friends all put in together to pay for our photographer. We couldn’t have asked for a better wedding gift. Very happy with Bec’s work” After a perfect evening catching up with family and friends, Lara and Gonz then spent their wedding night at Alpha Hotel in Tuggeranong. Lara’s best wedding advice: “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

STEVE + RACHEL If a destination wedding is on your wish list, then this dreamy location where Rachel and Steve chose to marry - Le Lagoto Resort & Spa, Savaii, Samoa - is one to add to the top of your list. Le Lagoto is Samoan for ‘sunset’, and as you can see from the images captured by Bindy Welsh from Indigo Images - it is stunning! Rachel and Steve married on 18/8/18, which is a very lucky date according to Chinese Astrology. But what makes their wedding even more special, is that they were getting married 40 years after their very first date. Originally meeting through school in Canberra, Rachel says, “Steve took me on a date to the movies in 1978 in Canberra.” After that they dated again briefly in the early 1980’s, but they then went their separate ways until reconnecting again in late 2011.

Fast forward a few years to the marriage proposal Steve prepared while they were on a yacht in the picturesque setting in the Mediterranean, near Fethiye in Turkey. “One of the other guests on board was an Opera singer from Berlin and Steve arranged for her to sing an incredible aria for the occasion, which resonated across the water to huge applause from other yachts in the area. It was very romantic. Rachel recalls.

On 18/8/18, as Rachel and Steve prepared to wed each other, the rain, which had been pouring down all day, amazingly stopped - about an hour before their wedding. It was perfect. With the sun shining through the clouds, Rachel and Steve were married in front of 40 of their closest family and friends, at their dream wedding location. Rachel wore a 1950s vintage style dress that belonged to her mother. It was a cream, Irish linen dress that was her mother’s favourite race day outfit. And in keeping with the tropical surrounds, she wore a stunning floral headpiece, while Steve in his floral shirt and cream pants looked every bit the tropical groom. In this tropical haven, their casual beach themed wedding included appetisers on the beach, platters of oysters, lobster tails, sushi and mussels, with the mains including a whole suckling pig, fish, chicken and salads.

“Being a destination wedding, most guests arrived the week before and stayed a few days after the wedding, so celebrations were plentiful.” Rachel recalls how she was surprised with how relaxed and chilled they both were and how much they enjoyed it all. “No stress, just lots of love and fun shared with family and friends.” After a relaxing two weeks spent at Le Lagoto Resort & Spa with their guests, Rachel and Steve then stayed for three nights at Ifieleele Plantation on Upolo Island with family. Finally, they headed to New South Wales for two weeks to enjoy some alone time together as a newly married couple.

WILLIAM + KATHRYN Both born and raised in Canberra, Kathryn and William first met each other through friends 9 years ago. Kathryn had always said she wanted to get married at Gold Creek Chapel, and soon her dream wedding was to be realised when William proposed to her. She remembers the “Sweet, unexpected surprise at dinner! With 12 months until their wedding date, they set about organising their day with Kathryn taking on the role of wedding planner, stylist and coordinator. When their special day arrived, Kathryn spent the morning getting ready at the luxurious Hotel Realm with her bridesmaids and family, while William took advantage of the perfect sunny day and had a barbecue with all the boys at their home. Ready to walk down the aisle, Kathryn looked beautiful and stylish in her Alfred Angelo wedding gown (with the most amazing heels we might add), and her bridesmaids were stunning in their navy dresses matched with complementary coloured bouquets of burnt orange. The groom and groomsmen looked sharp as well with the white, navy and burnt orange colour combination.

Their wedding ceremony at Gold Creek Chapel was perfect. Says Kathryn, “My 11 year old daughter did a reading at our ceremony which brought tears to everyone.” Their wedding reception was held at The National Press Club of Australia, with 113 guests in attendance, travelling from Queensland, New South Wales, Canada, Melbourne and Canberra. One thing that surprised Kathryn on the night was that her maid of honour actually gave a speech after telling Kathryn that she couldn’t do one. Kathryn rates the experience at The National Press Club as amazing, saying “The team there are so good!” “The guests had a ball” she says, “and the kids wanted to do it all again the next day.” They included unique extras such as a Photo Booth from Mugshots Photo booths and the bomboniere consisted of small bottles of Baileys as they were now Mr & Mrs Bailey. Following the reception, Kathryn and William spent their wedding night at Hotel Realm and then headed off to the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Says Kathryn, “I wish we could do it all again - we can’t wait to see what the future brings.” Kathryn’s best wedding advice:

Enjoy every minute, don’t let the small things ruin your day.

JEFFERY + JESSICA It was not long after Jessica arrived in Canberra from Echuca in Victoria, that she met Jeffery. Now, six years later and they are happily planning to spend the rest of their lives together. With a little over 7 months to plan their wedding, Jessica set about organising all of the details for their special day, while Jeff chose their venue. Their guest list included friends and family from Echuca, Swan Hill, Robinvale, Queensland and Canberra. Jessica’s main focus was the ceremony - and it turned out perfectly. Their elegant colour scheme of black, silver and purple was carried through to the ceremony, with a black carpet runner and purple seat covers for that pop of colour.

Jessica, Jeffery and their wedding party looked relaxed and happy on the day. The black bridesmaids dresses and combination of black, white and silver worn by the groom and groomsmen, looked sharp and stylish and complemented Jessica’s lovely white and silver strapless gown perfectly. At their reception, which was also held at Rydges Manuka, the most emotional moment was when it was time for the dancing. Jessica’s mother had difficulty walking due to Osteoarthritis, so they organised for an Aunty to step in and dance with Jeffery. Jeffery however insisted on helping Jessica’s mother and supported her while she was dancing. “It was very emotional and made us all cry.” Jessica says. After a lovely night shared with family and friends, Jessica and Jeffery spent their wedding night at Rydges Manuka before heading off to Port Douglas for their honeymoon. “We were there for 7 days,” recalls Jessica. “We went to Cairns and to the Hartleys Crocodile Park - it was amazing.” Jessica’s best wedding advice:

Don’t stress - I know it’s hard, but just have fun. Don’t worry about what other people will think, just do you and have a blast.

DAN + AMY Amy and Dan first met each other through friends, at a barbecue. “Our friends were planning to set Dan up with my cousin, but that didn’t go to plan!” says Amy. Dan had moved to Canberra from Sydney’s Northern Beaches the previous year for a university course, but once he met Amy - he never left! On Christmas morning 2016, just shy of four years since they had first met each other, Dan decided to take the next step in their relationship. Amy was not looking her most glamorous that particular morning, having just had knee surgery. She was impressed that Dan had still proposed to her as she says, “I was stuck on crutches and had hair stuck to my forehead with a clump of toothpaste.” The toothpaste from the previous night when she had slathered it all over her arms and legs to stop the mosquito bites from itching! Amy’s ‘Christmas present’ was a big box which had layers of boxes and chocolates with messages on each box inside. When finally, in the middle she found the jewellery box, she was at first too scared to open it. “I didn’t want to look stupid, getting all excited to open it, in case it was earrings or a necklace.” She admits. “But Dan opened it for me and there was the ring.”

Family is everything to this couple, so they were happy to involve them in the planning of their wedding. One Aunt gave dancing lessons in the weeks leading up to the wedding and another Aunt was their marriage celebrant on the day. Dan’s wedding ring was a gold and onyx ring that had belonged to his Grandfather, while Amy wore pearl earrings from her Aunt and had a crucifix necklace which was given to her by her Nanna on her 16th birthday - wrapped around her bouquet. Her mum was a yoga instructor, so Amy and one of her bridesmaids enjoyed a relaxing session early on the morning of the wedding. Guests travelled from across Australia. One of Amy’s best friends flew in from London for the weekend to be her bridesmaid and her brother travelled all the way from Japan. “Having my Nanna attend the ceremony from her nearby nursing home was also a huge feat which meant everything to me” says Amy. During the day, the weather was perfect, with clouds clearing just before the ceremony. Amy walked down the aisle to “Follow You Down” by Matthew Mayfield and performed by their close friend, Thomas Smith - it was Thomas who first introduced Dan and Amy to each other. They enjoyed a lovely ceremony in the House of Representatives Gardens at Old Parliament House, with their fur babies, Mike and Kegs also in attendance. Though Kegs couldn’t resist the temptation to dive into the back of Amy’s dress as she walked back up the aisle!

Their reception, held at The Deck at Regatta Point was a bit cramped due to a late storm. It forced them to fit their 7 piece band inside and change their original plan to have their dance floor out on the deck so they could dance the night away under the stars. “Turns out we were extremely lucky though” says Amy, “the next day we woke up to torrential rain with Canberra’s CBD flooding!” At the reception, their first dance as husband and wife was to the song “I Can’t Help” (falling in love with you), by Elvis. “After our first dance” says Amy, “Dan’s cousin surprised us and our guests with a personal video message from Daryl Braithwaite, congratulating us on our wedding and wishing us all the best!”

“We’re proud of the the wedding and celebration that we pulled together, and had such a great time with our friends and family. There were so many things that didn’t go how I’d envisioned them - but at the end of the day I knew I was the only person who would have noticed. Waking up on the day, I realised that whatever would be, would be; there was no time to change or fix anything, so I felt so much more relaxed. Nektaria, our wedding coordinator was amazing and I’m sure also took care of many other hiccups that I didn’t even notice!” Amy and Dan were then spoiled by the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra where they spent their wedding night. For their honeymoon, they travelled to Vietnam to recover in the luxury of Palm Garden Resort & Spa in Hoi An for a week, then they spent the next few weeks exploring Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore. Highlights included cruising through Ha Long Bay, a busy food tour through the night time markets in the Ancient City of Hanoi, and watching the Sunrise with local friends at Angkor Wat. Amy and Dan are now also excitedly preparing for the arrival of their first baby, a girl due in March 2019.

RINGS & JEWELLERY

When selecting an engagement and wedding ring think carefully about your investment. It should reflect your personal style and your lifestyle because you will most likely be wearing them pretty much everyday. The white diamond is still the most popular and traditional choice of gem, but if you prefer a bit of colour there’s lots of coloured gems from which to choose. When selecting the stone, particularly a diamond, the four most important characteristics to look for are the cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Find a good jeweller who will help to find the perfect ring for you.

KNOW YOUR DIAMONDS

A Shot Above the

Rest Photograph y

Since your engagement and wedding ring will most likely be worn every day, it’s worthwhile knowing a little bit about what to look for before you buy. The Cut

The Cut refers to the arrangement of a diamond’s facets, whatever its shape. Most diamonds are cut with a full 58 facets, and different cuts will reflect light differently. A well-proportioned cut will reflect light between the facets and up through the crown. The shape of the stone is a matter of personal preference. The round (brilliant) shape is the most popular, with shapes like the emerald (rectangular), the marquise (oblong with pointed ends), the pear, the oval, the princess (square), and the heart shape offering some variety. The cut is the only one of the four qualities determined by man.

Colour

When you choose your diamond, choose one as close to colourless as possible; this allows white light to pass through and be dispersed as dazzling rainbows of colour on top. Very few diamonds are truly colourless, with most having a barely distinguishable brown or yellow tint.

Clarity

Clarity is determined by the number, size and position of inclusions (an inclusion is a trace of noncrystallised carbon). A diamond free of inclusions is very rare and therefore very valuable.

Carat weight

The actual weight is measured in carats with each carat divided into 100 points. So the weight of a diamond of 25 points is 0.25 carats, or 1/4 carat.

The Setting

Settings show off the brilliance of the ring and set the style. A complementary, innovative, and professional design and ring setting will ensure their natural beauty is highlighted. The most popular settings include: Bezel set - diamond is set in a secure frame of precious metal hannel set – a number of diamonds set side by C side within a band of precious metal law set – a solitaire diamond is held in place by C four or six metal prongs that bend over it avé set – many small diamonds are placed closely together P and held in place by individual grains of gold ension set – a modern version of the classic solitaire, the T diamond is suspended in a gap in the actual band.

The Metal

While yellow gold has traditionally been seen on Australian brides, the popular European trend of using white gold is now coming to the fore. Some jewellers say all diamonds should be placed in platinum or white gold, as it can make the diamond look larger and brighter. However, yellow gold, rose gold and silver are still very popular. Some couples choose a style that combines one or two of the options. A combination of yellow and white gold best enhances semi-precious and precious stones.

Caring for your rings ry to avoid harsh T cleaners and chemicals, as they can damage or tarnish your rings.

Things to consider before buying your rings Check that neither of you react to your choice of metal. I s the style practical for long term use. eg., does the ring sit too high above the hand? ill the rings date when W fashions change? Are the rings comfortable to wear? o you prefer a smaller highD quality gem or do you prefer quantity over quality?

e careful with everyday B chemicals such as those found in hairsprays and perfumes as they can put a dull coating on your diamond. t least once a year put A your rings in for a ‘checkup’ with the jeweller. They will professionally clean your rings and check the settings to ensure that their stones are still firmly in place.

2019 CAKE TRENDS Metallics

Rustic Buttercream The rustic buttercream semi-naked cake with drips and fresh florals or the completely iced buttercream cake in either a smooth or rustic finish, with the addition of fresh florals top the list as the most sought after wedding cakes for 2019. And it’s no wonder - fresh florals are so popular on cakes as they can complement your wedding colour scheme easily, while adding that touch of romance that flowers do so well.

Whether gold leaf effects, metallic lace effect, a sharp geometric design in metallic or all over metallic coloured cake, metallic cakes can’t help but look glamorous.

Ombre Ombre effects can look equally as good on a rustic buttercream cake, on a more delicate piped cake, to a sharp hard edged cake using fondant. If you like the look, but don’t want too much colour often associated with ombre cakes, a subtle white to ivory coloured ombre effect would look very elegant.

Ruffles

White on white

Delicate frills and ruffles give wedding cakes a gorgeous, feminine finish. This effect can be achieved using buttercream or fondant.

Crisp white, sharp edged, tall barrel designs using fondant with all white embellishments are popular for their ‘Wow’ factor. Bad Cat Photography

Handpainted It’s not surprising that many of the talented cake designers are artists who use cakes as their canvas. If you want a completely original looking cake, handpainted cakes may be for you. Monet Inspired, strained glass look, illustrative or watercolour effects - there are so many options, so it just depends on your preference and your cake decorators style.

Lace Red Photography

Monogrammed The monogram can be used as an all over pattern or just as one large motif. A great way to celebrate your new shared initials!

Rosettes Created with all over textural sugar roses, for a delicate and elegant effect. Rosettes always look beautiful for weddings in white, ivory or subtle blush tones.

69

38537 - Cake editorial.indd 1

With the continued popularity of lace wedding gowns, lace cakes remain to be popular. Lace always looks beautiful and brides can customise their cake to the look of the lace used on their wedding gown. It looks best white on white, ivory on white or a subtle blush on white.

Geometric Geometric cakes give a stylised urban feel. The bold patterns work well with bright colours and can include the traditional zig-zag, or chevron design to sharp shapes such as hexagons or other simple, striking shapes. Perfect for a contemporary reception setting, this style works best with a simple colour palette so it doesn’t compete with the design.

What flavour is this cake? Vanilla. What flavours are popular right now for wedding cakes? After the Royal wedding I have had a few enquiries for Lemon Elderflower, although I think a lot of couples are keeping the flavours more traditional, such as Chocolate or Vanilla. What trends do you see in wedding cake designs at the moment? Naked Cakes, Floral arrangements and bright pops of colours seem to be popular. Where do you get your inspiration? I love Fine Arts and exploration into textures - I get a lot of inspiration from Artists and designers from all around the world with their twists and interpretations into design. What made you go into cake designing? I have been a Chef and Pastry Chef since school, so food is my background and having my passion and practising of Visual Arts, I thought of a way to bring my two loves together. Cake design seems to be a perfect platform.

Why is this one of your favourite cake designs? This petit little present is a recent wedding cake design. It’s one of my favourites as it captures not only the idea the couple were after for their cake, but the representation behind their relationship as well. The natural texture of the fondant with Australian fauna represented the Kimberlys, where the couple had met, the compass for travel, the ribbon and bow reflected the colours of the Bride’s dress with touch of gold, and the flowers were hand crafted to match the bouquets. I truly believe I was able to capture the couple and their story, as well as the day itself. It was a beautiful piece.

What trends do you predict for 2019 wedding cakes? White on White – a twist on a traditional wedding cake with white texture and flowers etc. Different shapes, pops of colour and gold. Flower arrangements were popular for 2018 and I think that will carry forward into the new year. Any advice to the couple when looking for their dream cake? Its not just a cake! It is something that is remembered and is a part of your story. It should be unique and a representation of you both.

Q. Any advice to the couples organising flowers for their wedding? A. Order early!!! Even if you get a deposit put down to set the date. All good florists will book out early, especially for March to May and September to November. Avoid getting married around a florist peak trade…Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas and New Year as you will find it difficult to get a florist to have the time - and also flowers are being purchased in high volumes and therefore may be harder to source, and more expensive.

MANUKA FLOWERS www.manukaflowers.com.au

Q. Why is this flower arrangement one of your favourites? A. I love this bouquet because it is different. The textured materials and the colours work so well together. Q. What flowers have you used to create your arrangement? A.We have used succulents, hypericum berry, dusty miller, Bruni and sedum. Q.Where did you get your inspiration for this arrangement? A. The client brief for this wedding was to create something different including succulents (her favorite) and other textured material. The bouquets needed to travel to the mountains so we also needed to use flowers that would hold up for the trip. This is the stunning result that tied in perfectly with the colour theme and the outdoor wedding venue.

Q. What flowers and arrangements are popular right now for weddings? A. Popular for weddings are the use of the garden type blooms like open and perfumed roses (that are now grown commercially by many growers). Also Peonies and Hydrangea. The bouquet style is informal and loose. Lots of textures and flower forms. Q. What trends do you predict for 2019 wedding flowers and arrangements? A. I think the above trend will continue for a while as many couples are choosing an outdoor venue for their ceremony and reception. The outdoor setting in nature is very on trend like gardens, parks and wineries.

73

38535 Manuka Flowers Ed_final.indd 1

Q. Any other tips or anything else that you would like to share with us that is interesting about your field of expertise? A. Take the floral designers advice and be open to letting them help with the choice of flowers as they are the experts and know what will be in season and what the quality will be like. You may need to have a second choice for some blooms that are on the cusp of a season start or finish. Just like seasonal fruit and vegetables, there are better times to buy certain things and if you want out of season you will pay more to get it imported. The cost of the flowers will also depend on the labor that goes into creating the bouquets. Every bloom needs to be prepared to hold up out of water for your special day. Manuka Flowers has been in business for 25 years and run by Sue and her qualified team of designers. We spend time with our brides from the very first appointment through to the wedding day making sure everything is perfect.

FLOWERSWITHLOVE flowerswithlove.net.au

Q. What made you go into floristry? A. I have always loved to garden and grow things and started working in the Dried Flower Shop at Pialligo Plant Farm in 1990, we ran classes, made wreaths and dried flowers there. Since I was a child I’ve always been creative.

Q. Why is this flower arrangement one of your favourites? A. I love the textures and colours of this one. Burgundy and green are my two favourite colours and at the moment they are very popular in wedding bouquets. Q. What flowers have you used to create your arrangement? A. A mix of roses, dahlias and Veronica with dusty miller and peppercorn foliage. Q.What flowers/arrangements are popular right now for weddings? A. The unstructured, ‘just picked from the garden’ look has been popular for a little while but a lot of our brides are still requesting the classic, rounded bouquet, or something in between the two. Q.Where do you get your inspiration? A. I get a lot of inspiration from nature, and when I walk my dog Daisy.

www.WeddingGuide.com.au

38536 Flowers With Love Ed.indd 1

Q. What trends do you predict for 2018 wedding flowers/arrangements? A. Flowers are a bit like fashion, the popularity of styles will do a full circle and eventually come back into fashion again. At the moment the loose, unstructured style is very popular but a lot of our bride’s still want the classic style bouquet too. Q. Any advice to couples organising their flowers for their wedding? A. Contact your florist as soon as you can to be sure they are not already booked out. Be prepared to be flexible with your flower choice because what you have your heart set on may be completely out of season.

WEDDING STYLING & HIRE When it comes to wedding styling, we often put weddings into categories such as rustic, bohemian, vintage to name a few. In reality though, every wedding is unique and these categories are not meant to be rigid, but more a framework to work with and take from it what appeals to you. Professional wedding stylists can decorate your ceremony right through to your reception in a way that reflects who you are as a couple. They can help you narrow down your wedding ‘look’ and supply you with beautiful decor to suit your style.

traditions&customs

TRADITIONS & CUSTOMS Traditions, customs, conventions and superstitions, whether you realise it or not, are probably all a part of your wedding. Although most of these rituals started in times when marriage was very different to what it is today, their core symbolism relates to the unification of a couple; to a couple becoming one.

Carried over the threshold This romantic custom is believed to have come from the time when tribal man hit his chosen wife over the head and carried her away where her kin couldn’t find them!

The eternal bond This never-ending circle, complete union without end, is symbolised today by wedding rings. Customs comply with the ‘eternal bond’ in various ways; the wedding ceremony of the Greek Orthodox involves holding a crown over the couple; in Jewish tradition, the ceremony takes place under a ‘huppah, where the couple shares a glass of wine, then the groom breaks the glass, freezing the moment in time. Some asian cultures believe that by sharing rice from the same bowl, the bride and groom show their oneness; and in Japanese custom, the couple takes three sips of rice wine to seal their union. Red Photography

Throwing rice Showering the new bride and groom with rice was a tradition started in Asia that was considered a symbol of fertility. In Australia, this was then replaced with confetti, and now bubbles, rose petals and pot pouri are more popular.

Something old, something new

Indigo Images

The tradition of wearing ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is still recognised by many brides. Something old represents the bride’s family ties and her life before marriage, while something new represents the new life she is entering. Something borrowed represents the importance of family and friends, while something blue represents their faithfulness to each other and their union. Brides often choose jewellery to symbolise ‘something old’; their wedding gown for ‘something new’; often a handkerchief for ‘something borrowed’, and ‘something blue’ is often a garter with blue ribbon or sapphire or turquoise jewellery.

The honeymoon The custom of a honeymoon is said to have similar origins. One month of seclusion was considered enough time for the bride’s kin to call off the search for her. Though another theory for the word ‘honeymoon’ originated in ancient Egypt where the bride’s father gave the groom a full pot of honey in honour of the union. The ceremony always took place on a full moon, hence the word ‘honeymoon’.

Red Photography

The luck of the chimneysweep The luck of the chimneysweep is a superstition from England and involves an authentic chimneysweep kissing the bride on her wedding day. The kiss is supposed to impart luck, ensuring the marriage is a happy and prosperous one. If you just happen to see a chimneysweep on your wedding day, that is definitely considered good luck!

entertainment

ENTERTAINMENT Entertainment is the perfect ingredient to complete your wedding day and there are so many different options available. The right entertainment will set the mood, highlight the day’s proceedings and create a special harmony to share with all those lucky enough to be celebrating with you. Whatever form of entertainment you choose, employ experienced personnel who understand your specific needs.

OUR TIPS What Style?

Choose the style of music you would like your disc jockey or musician to play. Popular choices include jazz, country, pop, bush, rock & roll, ballads, old style dance and dinner music. It’s a good idea to incorporate a few different styles to follow the nights proceedings. Ceremony - sounds of a string quartet, saxophonist or jazz duo is a popular way to say ‘I do’. Pre-dinner drinks & dinner - being neither loud nor intrusive, instrumental music is the ideal accompaniment. After dinner - more upbeat dance music will set the mood for a lively celebration.

Last minute checks

A week before your wedding, it is advisable to contact your entertainer to re-confirm details. Check the reception date, venue, time guests will arrive, time you expect to finish and particular pieces of music you requested have been noted. If you have a separate MC, make sure your entertainer and MC meet each other on the day to discuss timing of toasts etc to ensure the proceedings run smoothly.

Meet your Entertainer

Don’t just book online, set up an appointment so you can meet them first. Make sure their style is what you are after. Ask questions and discuss the reception format and music before booking your entertainment in. Check that they are able to perform any music or special song you would like. If you don’t have an MC (Master of Ceremonies) organised, it’s worth checking if your disc jockey can perform this additional role, as they are often called upon to do this job.

The Old Coach Stables

The old coach stables were built in 1857, and used by the Cobb and Co mail service. The stables have been recently restored into a beautiful restaurant. The Old Coach Stables Restaurant provides a very unique venue in a rural setting for special functions, business conferences, and weddings. We are open only by appointment. Our venue is a wonderful combination of history, food, and wine, on a working sheep and cattle property. We are located 50 minutes from Canberra and 30 minutes from Yass, Goulburn and Crookwell. We invite you to call and make an appointment – we would love to show you around the stables, discuss your event, and answer your queries.

There are a couple of important tips in selecting your marriage Celebrant. The first is to book early! It is recommended that you book your celebrant at least 6 months prior to your wedding date. Secondly, find a celebrant who will deliver the style of wedding ceremony you would like. Finally, you can do almost anything in your ceremony, so talk with your Celebrant about the many options available, or make some up!
