THE ULTIMATE LUXURY FOR MANY OF US IS TRAVEL. After all, who would say no to the luxe offerings on page 42 (they have all been added to my bucket list), ticking off a lifelong dream such as gorilla trekking (page 52) or getting away from it all to inhale a vastness that can only be found off the beaten track (page 48)? I lean more towards the latter as I get older – is it an age thing that quieter, more meaningful travel overtakes the need for bright lights and city nights?

Our cover personality, Thebe Ikalafeng, takes travel a whole inspiring step further. He had a dream, set a goal and then achieved it. Visiting every country in Africa was as much a personal adventure for Thebe as it was part of a journey to understand his continent better, as well as to highlight all that Africa has to offer. An entire continent later, Thebe’s life, work and passion are now all aligned.

If you’re gripped with wanderlust, start that life list today – the weekend jaunt you keep promising or the ultimate experiential journey – there’s never a better time than now.

IN THE REALM OF HOROLOGY, few timepieces command as much admiration and reverence as world-time watches. These masterfully crafted instruments of timekeeping offer a window into the global tapestry of cities, continents and time zones, effortlessly bridging the gaps between different regions and nations. With their intricate dials and incredibly complex mechanisms, world-time watches serve as a functional tool for the modern globetrotter, displaying the time in multiple time zones simultaneously.

PATEK PHILIPPE

5531G White Gold

At Watches and Wonders this year, Patek Philippe reminded us of its incredible mastery over every aspect of watchmaking with the World Time Minute Repeater Reference 5531G, now adorned in splendid white gold. The dial of this extraordinary timepiece boasts a central Grand Feu cloisonné enamel, meticulously illustrating a steamboat cruising on the picturesque Lake Geneva. The dial plate and 24-hour ring are expertly crafted from 18-karat gold, adding a touch of opulence to the overall design. The timepiece houses a minute repeater mechanism with two classic gongs and is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, the Calibre R 27 HU. POA, patek.com

TIME WITHOUT BORDERS

A WORLD-TIMER WATCH IS THE PERFECT TRAVEL PARTNER FOR GLOBAL ADVENTURES WHERE TIME KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES

MIDO

Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer

Mido’s rather popular Ocean Star Decompression Timer, a limited edition released in 2020, revived the use of colourful vintage dials. Now, the 2023 Ocean Star Decompression Worldtimer expands on this concept by retaining the colourful dial while adding a worldtime function. The 40.5mm stainless steel case maintains a classic skin diver shape, while a box-shaped sapphire crystal emulates the look of vintage acrylic. The bidirectional rotating bezel features city names instead of the usual timing function, with minute markings at 10-minute intervals. This fusion of vintage charm and travel functionality embodies Mido’s allure for collectors and adventurers alike. POA, midowatches.com

OMEGA

Seamaster

Aqua Terra Worldtimer

The latest version of the Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer breaks away from the typical elegant and dressy presentation of this complication by going with a sportier aesthetic. The trio includes a lightweight titanium version – a material that is currently the darling of the watch industry. The steel models feature green dials and ceramic bezels, while the titanium variant showcases a black and grey dial with 18-karat gold accents. These 43mm watches offer a 24-city world time function and are water-resistant up to 150 metres, making them ideal for those who are looking to make the most of the post-pandemic surge in travel. THIS IS THE STORY OF HOW THEBE IKALAFENG’S INCREDIBLE JOURNEY TO VISIT EVERY COUNTRY IN AFRICA CHANGED THE WAY HE SEES THE WORLD

15
YOUR JOURNEY
yourluxury.africa
yourluxury.africa

THERE’S A STRIKING black-and-white portrait hanging up on the wall behind Thebe Ikalafeng’s desk that will forever remind him of one of his most meaningful achievements. It is a silhouette of a man in a simple white Sudanese jellabiya walking down the centre of a seemingly endless road with the vast desert bordering either side. There is no landscape, no embellishment, no detail.

The painting is of a picture of him taken in Sudan by his friend Thembi Khumalo, commissioned and gifted by his mentee and Anglican priest friend, Rt Reverend Kabelo Motlhakane. The picture was taken the day and moment it fully dawned on Thebe that he had accomplished his ultimate African goal: to visit each of the 55 countries on the continent. There are technically 54 because the Western Sahara is a disputed territory, but the African Union recognises 55.

“Sudan was actually the 54th country,” Thebe recalls. “I still had to visit Equatorial Guinea, but in my mind, on this very day in Sudan, I had finished my journey. I was overcome with a jubilant and incredibly deep emotion.”

There can’t be too many members of the 55 club – individuals who have set foot in every country in Africa – and for good measure, several ‘European’ islands such as St Helena, Mayotte and Reunion, which are practically within the African territory. It does feel a little ridiculous to try and tell the complete story of extraordinary travels, of a person who’s been to more than 115 countries, to every continent, journeyed from Cape to Cairo and from the Artic in Greenland – the North Pole –to Antarctica – the South Pole, and dared the most exhilarating adventures along the way, in one short article.

Looking at each border crossing, each person he met, each meal he’s had, and throwing in the odd real monkey stew, trying out khat, being detained and having his passport retained, threatened to be thrown out of a country, daring crocodiles and pythons or trekking the rare silverback gorillas in the Virunga mountains – every one of his extraordinary experiences will surely find their way into a best-selling book one day.

The story that does bare telling here, however, is how Thebe’s journey across Africa changed him and forever impacted the way he views travel, as well as his relationship with the continent – the art, fashion, culture and the people he’s met along the way. Thebe himself says that the journey was more a metaphor of his philosophy that success and respect start at home.

Best known for his work as an accomplished and award-winning Hall of Fame African marketer, Thebe has purposely evolved his work and life, and is now well recognised as one of the foremost champions of a brand-led African renaissance. His Brand Leadership firm, established in 2002, has over the years consulted to hundreds of brands and organisations as diverse as poultry and politics across the continent. Since 2010, the Brand Africa initiative, through which he pioneered his ‘Brand Africa 100 | Africa’s Best Brands’ survey and rankings of brands in Africa, is recognised as the only and most-cited study and reference of brands in Africa.

In 2020, he founded the African Leadership Academy (ALA) globally to inspire an Africafocused brand leadership and to sharpen the skills of brand-builders, empowering them to build the next generation of African brands. Most recently, he launched an intellectual property law advisory, African Intellectual Property Partners (AIP), to advise brands and entrepreneurs to identify, enforce and protect their intellectual property rights in Africa.

“It’s unacceptable that, as we have established in our study of brands over the past 10 years, on average, only 20 percent of the brands that Africans admire are African, and globally, according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Africa accounts for less than two percent of the trademarks that are registered in the world. If we as Africans are going to grow and compete globally, we need to invest in building great African brands and in protecting them,” says Thebe.

THEBE PORTRAITS:

OPENING SPREAD LEFT: Thebe delights in being a “walking billboard” for distinctive and authentic cultural outfits from every African region. Here Thebe is pictured in a suit by Moshions in Rwanda and a skin on loan from a royal house, a walking stick from Ghana and ostrich-beaded headgear from Botswana under a traditional Zulu headband –umqhele. OPENING SPREAD RIGHT: Thebe wears a Kimono outfit from Ghanaian designer and friend, K.O.D of Nineteen57, and a traditional head dress, Umugara, worn during Intore, the Dance of Heroes, performed at traditional ceremonies in Rwanda. THIS PAGE: Thebe wears an original Akan ‘nwentoma’, also known as Kente, meaning a woven cloth, he acquired at a historical source in Bonwire on the outskirts of the traditional Ashanti region of Kumasi in Ghana. His accessories are also from the region.

When asked about the genesis of his African journey, Thebe says it gained urgency, meaning and momentum when he left his job as Nike’s chief marketing officer for Africa – a rather stellar start to his mercurial marketing career, which won him several global and local awards and immediate recognition as one of Africa’s leading marketers.

“When I left Nike, I knew I was done with corporate, but needed to reframe how I saw myself in the world. Back then, while I was winning awards for excellence in branding and communication, the more popular narrative was that of ‘winning’ best-dressed ‘awards’. It began to concern me greatly that the first perceptions about me were always, “He is so elegant, charming and dresses so well.” I wondered privately: When are they going to say I'm doing something meaningful? I wanted to be remembered for having a meaningful existence in this world.”

Thebe adds, “I needed to move from success to significance – to matter – and began to intentionally chart my journey and focus. We learn as we grow older that whether it’s a social media post, a presentation you make or how you put yourself together, somebody is always watching, and you are making an impression that shapes other’s world view of themselves and, or, of you.”

Thebe says the first things he did were to intentionally stop wearing his signature Western suits, change his engagements and focus his writings and speeches on a narrative that single-mindedly contributed to the continent’s image. He championed brands that build the economy and the continent’s wealth, image and reputation. “Initially, I received a lot of strange feedback. People would ask: “What’s up with these ‘African' rags you’re wearing? We miss your immaculate Gucci suits that you wore so well”,” he says. “But later, I began to see the see the shift among my peers in business and politics – particularly in South Africa –switching too, saying how they had been watching me and felt inspired to change and reflect their pride in their country, cultures and continent.”

yourluxury.africa

What is now known as purpose-led marketing has become a way of life for Thebe and meant his mission to travel to every country on the continent was as much of a personal adventure as a purposeful journey to understand his continent better. While his first forays into the continent were a trip to Kenya in 1996 with his American university friend, Robb Hoenick, and to the Africa Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso in 1998, as well as several to his grandfather’s ancestral home in Botswana, he sees summitting Mount Kilimanjaro (which he did once for Mandela’s birthday and then again exactly on his 50th birthday) as the transformative moments that cemented his purpose. Fifteen or so maxi passports and every African country and island later, Thebe’s life, his work and his passion are now all finally aligned.

The logistics, cost and effort of visiting all of Africa cannot not be underestimated, he admits, and he would often tag his African visits onto official business trips. For example, if he was due to visit Kenya to see a client or deliver a talk, he would leave time on one side of the trip to take in another country. “This was often easier said than done since there aren’t always direct flights in and out of neighbouring African countries,” he notes.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Sudan – Thebe’s penultimate African country; Botswana – with the statues of its three founding chiefs; Tanzania – at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on his 50th birthday; Chad – shopping at the Chad Grande Marche with host and friend, Tito

Thebe also decided early on that his visits would not be curated, tourist-style African trips. He would immerse himself in the local culture and experience life the way citizens live it. When visiting a country, he says he leaves his own at the border post and opens himself to enjoy each place without judgement or preconceptions. Similarly, when he documents his journeys as he does on social media, he does not sensationalise nor focus on the negatives, but rather celebrates the uniqueness, positives and real experience of each wonderful destination.

Never averse to a challenge, Thebe’s African adventures have included skydiving in Swakopmund in Namibia, summitting Mount Sinai in Egypt, as well as trekking the 116km Moshoeshoe Walk that retraces the path the great Basotho King walked as he led his people to safety on top of Thaba Bosiu’s natural fortress in the 19th century. He’s travelled 155m below sea level when visiting Lake Assal in Djibouti – the lowest point in Africa – rode the 52hour train on the historic 1 860km-long TAZARA train track between Tanzania and Zambia – also known as the Uhuru Railway which was established in 1976 – and has bungee jumped off Bloukrans Bridge, the tallest bungee in the world.

An always-on marketer, Thebe is acutely aware of the message his every move sends out. While he often stays at some of the finest hotels and dines at the best restaurants, it’s never his preference, and he is always sure not to post anything pretentious about his travels on social media. “To me, luxury has always been the authentic experience and not the flashy trappings,” he says. Thebe feels a responsibility to celebrate Africa for the beauty of its rawness – its authenticity. He also emphasises travelling with a sincere approach towards the people that he meets. “I don’t look at people as a moment to transact, but as an opportunity to understand the common bonds, purpose and hopefully enduring relationships, irrespective of our origins or circumstances.”

Thebe’s family and friends who follow his posts have been inspired by his downto-earth attitude. “You have moved us and inspired us to love and enjoy our continent,” they tell him. “They recognise that my posts are not bragging about my experiences, but share insights. And many say that even if they never get to travel to these countries, they’re grateful that I’ve taken them along vicariously – or I’ve inspired their bucket list,” Thebe says.

His African travels have definitely impacted his sartorial style. Thebe is seldom seen in Western-branded suits and has instead become an unofficial ambassador of African luxury. In every country he visits, he seeks out the best designer and pays

the studio a visit. The result is a wardrobe brimming with traditional and designer African clothes and accessories. Thebe has a close relationship with many of these designers and tailors, and they deliver handmade garments to him wherever he is in the world.

And so, with Thebe’s Africa travel mission complete, he continues his other mission to amplify great African brands. “We are the generation that gets to tell a better and real story of Africa as an enterprising, innovative, independent, resilient and prosperous place. Because the politics and politicians have failed us, one thing we can control is the ability to create competitive brands that enable us to change the continent’s narrative, growth and wealth. While we do have a youth dividend, with diminishing resources and open borders, we don’t have the luxury of time. Instead of blaming the world for appropriating our creativity and ideas or borrowing and begging to fund our growth and development, we need to build, appreciate and support world-class African brands for Africa and for the world. Our authenticity is our luxury, our distinctiveness and competitive advantage,” he concludes. @thebeikalafeng; www.ikalafeng.africa ■

MY LOVES

PENS: Thebe started collecting Montblanc pens after a friend gave him one when he graduated with his MBA 30 years ago. It’s one of the few he’s regrettably lost. But since then, he’s acquired many, and only uses limited-edition Montblanc pens. “My most treasured are the Miles Davis, Jimi Hendricks and Alexandre Dumas pens – the only people of African descent in the MB limited edition series.” His only pen that’s not a Montblanc is the limited-edition Montegrappa Nelson Mandela pen.

GLASSES: Thebe wanted stylish round glasses, and Belgian eyewear brand Theo fitted the bill with its unique flair for individualistic design. “I think they’re now more a collector than a functional item, and I’m constantly getting a pair or two. I also enjoy local brand Aluta’s sunglasses, which I alternate with other global brands on the odd day I wear sunglasses.”

AFRICAN ART AND ARTEFACTS THAT REFLECT HIS TRAVELS: “My 200-year-old Ethiopian Orthodox Bible, handwritten on goat skin, is probably my most treasured artefact. Because of the array, vibrance and diversity of the global African aesthetic of my living spaces, Trevor [Stuurman] calls my home Zeitz MOCAA. But what pleases me is anyone who enters my space usually says it’s exactly what they expected – a reflection of the person and journeys. Every room has art or an artefact, which collectively sum up my African travels and blend elegantly with its Western context. In most cases, I would have met the artist or know the history intimately. What I value most in everything I own or collect is the story behind it, and not the commercial value.”

GROOMING: There are only three fragrances in Thebe’s bathroom, and Aqua di Parma is his go-to daily fragrance. “I’ve been wearing it for over 25 years. Along the way I’ve added Creed and Loewe, and I use Ghanaian luxury shea-butter-based personal care range, Kaeme.”

THE GIFT OF TIME: “The best gift that I’ve given or received is the luxury of time and bringing people together to celebrate. It’s most meaningful to me when I’ve made time for others’ birthdays, graduations, births and other of life’s beautiful moments. I’ve invited many friends along on different African trips and think the gift of time, experience, exposure and inspiration cannot be measured in money. With their experience of the continent, they’ve become inspirations to other people to champion the African story.”

TRAVEL SIGNATURE: “I pack at least one of my favourite African brands when I travel – either my Nigerian brother Tunde’s Ethnik brand sneakers, mentee Tshepo’s jeans or MAXHOSA AFRICA’s swimwear. I wore orange and yellow Camper shoes through most of my journey across the continent. But other than my new favourite Mafi Mafi custom travel shawl blanket by my favourite Ethiopian designer, Mahlet Mafi Afework, I travel light.” Other travel must-haves include his camera with its unique beaded strap from Kenya, 1T iPhone, essential plugs, meds, headsets and an empty memory canvas to record new experiences.

STYLE SIGNATURE: “My incomparable African suits by arguably the finest designers on the continent or Ghanaian Ashanti wraps I travelled to get at the source in Bonwire outside Kumasi. I’m very good friends with most of my tailors and designers and collaborate with them on creating unique outfits for me. Generally, I’m comfortable being a walking billboard for the most distinctive cultural outfits from every region in Africa.”

FOOD AND DRINK: “While I prefer my close friend Desmond Mabuza’s famed restaurant, Signature in Morningside, for fine dining in Johannesburg or mentee and friend Siba’s in Cape Town, I’m at my indulgent happiest at Marco’s African Restaurant in Cape Town, Sakhumzi’s in Soweto and the innumerable African restaurants across the continent.”

BAde o f Roses

FOUNDED ALMOST 35 YEARS AGO, ELEMIS is a leading British luxury skin wellness brand committed to healthy skin and body with efficacy at their core. And now, after two decades of their iconic Pro-Collagen Marine Cream – the first to launch of the Pro-Collagen range and the brand’s best-selling day cream – ELEMIS is once again coming up roses. The Pro-Collagen Marine Cream has been reimagined, drawing on the brand’s British heritage and the much-loved scent of organic English rose hydrolat (a floral water).

ELEMIS uses roses grown in Herefordshire on a female-led farm that is committed to sustainability, minimising waste and recycling. The fully traceable organic English rose hydrolat incorporates more than 20 rose varieties, carefully selected for their complex fragrance. The roses are handpicked at their optimum to encapsulate their soothing benefits while transporting users to a scent inextricably linked to the brand.

The formula contains the same clinically proven skincare technology as the original Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, and includes the moisture-boosting Padina Pavonica, anti-ageing powerhouse Chlorella Vulgaris and Gingko Biloba, to soothe and calm the skin. The gel-like texture hydrates the skin without leaving an oily residue. This performance-driven day cream is suitable for all skin types, but specifically delicate skin, thanks to the soothing benefits of English rose.

CHARACTERISED BY ITS LATE-NIGHT SUNSETS, seas of people spilling from pubs into the streets and the sounds of festivals and street markets, a London summer can feel otherworldly – even for its own residents. The three-month break from its infamous grey, drizzly weather means a citywide good mood is firmly in place, making it arguably more festive that the Festive Season itself.

With the sun up before 5am each day and the last rays of sunshine still glinting at 10pm, it’s worth packing as much as possible into a single day. It’s not unusual for Londoners to flit from morning street markets to lazy pub lunches in beer gardens hidden across the city, then onwards to rooftop cocktails overlooking the Thames River before ending off with a late-night meal at one of the thousands of choices of top restaurants.

But with so many options, it can feel a bit paralysing to plan your days in London during the summer – especially when visiting from another continent. This guide is an entryway into the capital city during the warmer months, to share stories of the places your friends and family haven’t been… yet.

BATTERSEA POWER STATION

After many years of sitting empty, London’s Battersea Power Station has been revamped and given a new lease of life as a shopping and leisure destination. Its mixed-use renewal blends together exciting eateries, late-night bars and a wide range of designer brands, events and exhibitions. In particular, the Chimney Lift Experience will zip you to the top of one of the old smoke stacks of the power station, giving you an all-round view of London from an impressive 109 metres up. batterseapowerstation.co.uk

NOT-SOSTANDARD AT THE STANDARD

Typically conjuring up an image of one of its American counterparts, the first The Standard hotel outside of the United States is a quirky nugget that stands out strong amongst its neighbouring Victorian-era buildings. Right on the doorstep of King’s Cross, it’s central enough to serve as a great base for any London stay, but also has numerous food and drink options to make it a haven from the busy streets when you need it.

Decimo, one of the premier restaurants at the hotel, is overseen by Michelin-starred chef, Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, who claims half Mexican and half Bristolian heritage. Naturally, the eatery focuses on modern upgrades to Mexican cuisine and couples it all with incredible views over the city. Look out for the guest chef rotation if you’re in the mood for something a little more special. standardhotels.com

A PARISIAN ESCAPE

“No matter your sin, you’re welcome here…” belts out Harold Zidler in the stage adaptation of Baz Luhrman’s renowned Moulin Rouge. His voice echoes off of a life-sized elephant that juts into the crowd, and the twinkling of a thousand small lights makes you forget about the streets of London outside. The Picadilly Theatre’s longstanding performance of Moulin Rouge is for good reason: it’s an epic display of flash, feathers and humour and incorporates modern pop songs for a singalong feel. thepicadillytheatre.com

But why end the night with the show alone? Across the road lies Brasserie Zédel, a restaurant so opulent that you will feel as if you’ve stepped into a film yourself. VISIT LONDON’S BEST NEIGHBOURHOOD

Voted as the best neighbourhood to live in by Sunday Times readers in 2023, the north London enclave of Crouch End feels as if you’ve stepped out of the often manic quagmire of the big city into somewhere serenely remote.

Without an official tube stop, Crouch End has become a haven for independent boutiques and thriving local restaurants that have been around for decades. It’s considered to be one of the best areas for those in the creative industries to reside, and as such, you can expect to find quirky galleries and studios dotted along the high street. Keep an eye out for its iconic clocktower too, reliably clanging out each hour of the day.

FOR DESIGNER GEAR AT A STEAL:

YOU KNOW THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT A HOTEl when you get told to take the Golden Staircase to the breakfast lounge, when you have a heated Japanese loo seat with a view of Big Ben in your bedroom and the serene underground swimming pool completely erases the hustle and bustle of the British capital’s busiest square.

Dubbed a ‘super boutique’ hotel, The Londoner is the flagship five-star property for Edwardian Hotels London, founded by British billionaire Jasminder Singh. Legend has it that Mr Singh spends many a day sitting in the lounge around The Londoner, soaking in the hotel experience and observing how guests interact with this luxurious space.

One of the newest additions to the London hotel scene, The Londoner opens onto Leicester Square, right in the middle of London’s busy theatre district. It’s hard to miss with more than 15 000 handcrafted blue tiles cladding the exterior of the building.

But step inside the luxury oasis and you’ll find that the understated elegance of the extraordinary 16-story space makes it an absolute sanctuary. Spacious rooms are complemented with bathrooms, which truly have to be seen to be believed. Dark teal floor-to-ceiling tiles, combined with dramatic brushed-black chrome Axor fittings, make for a warm and moody bathroom experience that every other hotelier should endevour to emulate.

Some call The Londoner the ‘iceberg hotel’ as six of the hotel floors are actually undergound. There are two private cinemas (this is theatre land, remember? And the Odeon is right next door), a ballroom, spa, gym and many private meeting places. There are six concept bars and restaurants, but the flagship is undoubtedly Whitcomb’s with its refined but light French-inspired menu. One of the highlights is a rather remarkable potato bake, so be sure to order it when you’re there.

After dinner, head up to 8 at The Londoner – a rooftop bar that was closed when we visited in winter but is sure to be delicious this summer.

THE AUTHENTIC SPIRIT OF FINE MEXICAN TEQUILA LIVES ON THROUGH THE DEVOTION OF DON JULIO

PorAmoral Tequila

THE LEGEND

It’s early morning in Atotonilco, Mexico. The sun has just risen above the crest of the ochre hills and illuminates the silhouette of a man bent over neatly planted rows of agave plants as the cool of the dawn slowly gives way to the heat of the day. The man is Julio Gonzales and he is doing what he does every morning because it’s his passion. Julio carefully trims around each succulent, making sure that no invading weeds or grass can steal precious water and nutrients from his treasured agave, as he knows that only healthy plants can produce the high-quality tequila that he loves making.

It was with this devotion that the legend of Don Julio and his La Primavera tequila distillery was born in 1942. The craft of working with the rich red soil of Jalisco ran in Julio’s blood. He had been a farmer for most of his life, so where the unforgiving highlands of Atotonilco struck fear into the hearts of lesser men, Julio saw only opportunity. More than 80 years later, we have Don Julio and his humble passion to thank for a range of extraordinary tequilas that evoke the spirit of Mexico, of entrepreneurship, of family and the Jimadores community that make Don Julio possible.

34 yourluxury.africa

THE SPIRIT

Step into the Don Julio family circle and taste the soul of Mexico through the fruits of Julio’s labour. The distillery still uses the original recipe and distilling techniques founded by Don Julio back in 1942, but has infused these timehonoured traditions with a modern twist, appealing to a new generation of tequila lovers that appreciate quality based on years of expertise. Don Julio would be proud.

THE TEQUILA

New to our shores, Don Julio Blanco is the perfect addition to a tequila cocktail. Its fresh, crisp notes of agave and citrus brighten up any mix. While Reposado is already well-known to South African tequila afficionados – its distinctive amber bottle revealing a hint of its mellow flavours – the Don Julio Anejo is best served at celebrations where family and friends come together. The aroma and palette are rich and complex, a result of being perfectly aged, and so are the signature flavour profiles of this iconic Mexican tequila.

The Don Margarita

BILALA MABUZA’S MOST RECENT creative endeavour at City Centre, Steyn City’s interpretation of modern-urban apartment living, is an unparalleled showcase of her talent. It combines her understanding of the City Centre’s vision of a curated lifestyle with her own finely honed instincts for details, layering, texture and colour. She is the driving force and creative genius behind the Cocoon Lifestyle team, and was initially invited to design one of the City Centre’s first show apartments in 2021. Her order book grew overnight from new home owners in the City Centre. It’s not surprising, then, that Steyn City Properties invited her back to exercise her talent once again through the interior design of a new luxury three-bedroom apartment.

Bilala undoubtedly has a firm grasp on what makes the development unique, making her an ideal choice for this project. Much like most of her designs, City Centre effortlessly combines luxury and convenience to evoke a premium lifestyle. “This attention to detail comes through in the new retail offerings, which have been carefully curated to remain in line with the City Centre’s concept of ‘fine concierge living’,” she says.

Since her first project in 2021, the City Centre has grown into a bustling city complete with treed piazzas, a 2 000acre indigenous parkland and a selection of outdoor facilities that keep residents active. These include an 18-hole Nicklaus design championship golf course, a 45km floodlit promenade, a 50km mountainbike track, a 300-metre-long lagoon, as well as outdoor workout stations, tennis courts and an indoor aquatic centre. Add to this the many retail and gourmet options, such as The Gallery at Steyn City, Le Creuset, The Seattle Coffee Company, Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream and awardwinning Italian restaurant Café del Sol.

The spacious multiple-roomed apartments do make it hard to leave the comforts of your home though, with double-glazed

windows, climate control, integrated blu_line kitchens with Gaggenau appliances and Kohler bathroom fixtures all coming standard. They’re the perfect canvas for the exuberant designs which blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. “We create homes for cocooning that envelop the senses and are elegant over time,” says Bilala. The recently designed three-bedroom apartment positioned due north overlooks the stunning lagoon, so it made sense to juxtapose form, function and asymmetry to engage the senses, layering engineered stones, leather and metal with warm oak and rich fabrics. Greys, whites, champagne and black accent the clean architectural lines of the dining room and kitchen chairs, while lighting fixtures and accessories like scatter cushions, faux fur throws and pendant lights from Cocoon Lifestyle’s new Profile Collection add texture and interest.

The outdoor space is a feast for the eyes: black and auburn highlight the greens and blues of the lagoon and surrounding landscape. Cleverly, the decision was made to divide the patio into three living zones where you’re able to relax with a book or entertain friends. ArtEye Gallery provided abstract works by Tony Bico, Rika Senekal, Sthenjwa Luthuli and Hussein Salim to complement the style and mood of the home.

Much like the founding concept of City Centre, Bilala’s designs are meant to enhance unique and customised spaces for families, couples or single professionals. Spaces that are custom-made for flexible and stylish living and entertaining.

THE WCELLAR DRINKWARE COLLECTION FROM WOOLWORTHS HAS A SIGNATURE GLASS FOR EACH WINE VARIETAL AND IS THE PERFECT ADDITION TO YOUR NEXT DINNER PARTY

40 yourluxury.africa
dining

IF YOU APPRECIATE YOUR WINE, you no doubt appreciate using the correct glassware. And you know that the right glass improves the taste of wine and that the shape and size of a drinking vessel brings different characteristics of the wine to the forefront while muting others.

The bowl of the glass is where the wine sits and where you drink from. You should never fill the glass completely, as to properly taste the flavours in the wine, you need space above it to collect aromas.

The elegant WCellar flute glass is designed for connoisseurs and home entertainers looking for glassware to welcome guests in style. It has a tall, narrow flute – perfect for bubbly – and its delicate rims enhance and elevate the tasting experience.

White wines are typically served in smaller-bowled glasses as they preserve floral aromas and express more acidity in wine. They also deliver extra aromas due to the wine’s proximity to the nose. Full-bodied white wines such as Viognier or oak-aged Chardonnay are better served in a larger bowl with a wider mouth to emphasise the wines’ creamier textures. The WCellar classic wine glass has a

timeless design and is a must-have for unlocking the fruity symphonies of the more delicate, floral wines, like your favourite Chardonnay, Pinot Noir or Rosé.

The Sauvchen glass is an opulent addition to your glassware collection and offers a palate-pleasing tasting experience. Its intended to soften the full-bodied flavours of wines such as Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc, and has a short nose to release the wine’s full bouquet.

Red wine tends to taste smoother from a glass with a wide opening, but it does depend on the varietal. Full-bodied wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot need a more generous glass size that allows the bouquet to fully develop.

All WCellar wine glasses have the clarity and brilliance of crystal without the lead content. They are recyclable and dishwasher safe, making them perfect for everyday occasions and more special events alike.

PLANNING YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY ADVENTURE? RESORTING TO ONE OF THESE LUXE STAYS MIGHT BE EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED…

WHILE THERE’S A LOT TO BE SAID FOR INDEPENDENT TRAVEL, sometimes we all just need a break. A proper holiday, where there are no adventures on public transport or tramping the pavements between historic sights, or deciding what’s for dinner.

This is where resort holidays come in. Havens of fine living where you never have to lift a finger. And we’ve done the hard lifting for you by unearthing four resorts across the globe that combine a healthy dose of luxury – and a little bit of exotic allure – with a whole lot of R&R.

Resorts for a little R&R

ZANZIBAR EMERALD ZANZIBAR RESORT & SPA

It’s not hard to be enchanted by Zanzibar, the romantic ‘spice island’ off the coast of East Africa. It’s an island where you can happily spend a day wandering the cobbled alleyways of Stone Town, the air perfumed with fresh spices drying in the sun, admiring the elaborately carved wooden doors and quiet courtyards. Come evening, book a table at a rooftop restaurant to watch the sun dip over this ancient trading port.

But don’t spend too long sightseeing amid the bustle of Stone Town. You’re here on holiday, remember? Instead, hop over to Matemwe on the north-east coast, where the Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa opened its doors in late 2022. It’s the first property outside the Maldives for this respected hospitality group.

With 250 rooms on offer, there’s a suite for every taste, and you can’t go wrong with the gorgeous Pool Suites. There are just four available, each with a private courtyard pool offering a haven of peace and quiet. The Jacuzzi Superior Junior Suites are your next best option, with – yup, you guessed it – a private jacuzzi.

If there’s a downside, it’s that most of Emerald’s suites are set at the rear of the 10-hectare property, which means only a handful of rooms enjoy an ocean view from the private terrace. Instead,

expect lush gardens and rustling palms to frame the horizon. It’s little hardship though, as the large hotel pool and beachfront restaurants offer glorious sea views and feet-in-the-sand dining. And you certainly won’t go hungry (or thirsty) here. Key to the appeal of Emerald Resorts is its elevated approach to all-inclusive. Their Deluxe All-Inclusive package begins the moment you arrive, and regardless of your room category – there are seven to choose from – the rate includes a-la-carte dining across four restaurants and an extensive wine and cocktail list to be enjoyed at four bars. Here, there is no mental gymnastics needed to work out the exchange rate on that second bottle of rosé you have your eye on. In-room mini-bar? That’s included too and is replenished daily. And did we mention the on-site gelato emporium?

It’s not all about indulgence though. The all-inclusive offering extends to activities with unlimited non-motorised watersports on offer. Unlike the busier west coast, the reefs offshore offer superlative snorkelling. You’ll also enjoy unlimited access to tennis and padel courts, while multi-generational travellers can make use of the Dolphin Kids’ Club, which is open until 9pm.

MALDIVES

AVANI+ FARES MALDIVES RESORT

Conjure up a mental image of a tropical paradise and I bet you it looks a little something like the Maldives. White sand so fine it squeaks underfoot. Waters so warm they make Durban feel chilly. Palms draped over aquamarine seas. You get the idea.

There are more than 160 resorts on offer across the Maldivian archipelago, from the eye-watering suites at Cheval Blanc Randheli – yes, that Cheval Blanc – through to the cheerfully accessible all-inclusive Club Med.

Hitting a happy medium is the brand-new Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort, which opened in April. It’s the first outing for the Avani brand in the Maldives and brings their signature sense of chic contemporary luxury to the archipelago with a 176-key resort in the Baa Atoll.

Just when you thought the Maldives couldn’t get any more spectacular, you discover the Baa Atoll. This remarkable collection of coral islands is the only proclaimed UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Maldives, and Fares Island is one of just a few dozen enjoying easy access to this remarkable conservancy. The highlight is Hanifaru Bay, world-famous for the opportunity to snorkel with manta rays and whale sharks.

Scuba diving is prohibited in Hanifaru Bay, but the reefs around Fares offer a dozen incredible dive sites, including a vibrant house reef that’s ideal for novice divers. Above the water, you’ll also find flyboarding, jet skis and kite-surfing to keep you occupied.

Back on dry land, a luxurious embrace awaits. It’s the first new opening in the area for three years, and it’s a resort that delivers understated luxury that never overshadows the magnificent natural surrounds. There are 16 categories of rooms and suites, from entry-level studios on the beach through to extravagant three-bedroom over-water villas with private pools.

Regardless of where you lay your head, you’ll enjoy access to the resort’s varied facilities, whether it’s the AvaniSpa or AvaniKids entertainment centre. The culinary experience is a highlight, with seven dining venues serving everything from flame-grilled fare at Charcoal to traditional Maldivian cuisine. Much of that is delivered fresh each morning by local fishermen, while the resort’s own gardens ensure a steady supply of organic produce. It’s a contemporary island escape in one of the country’s most notable new openings. Look out for the value-driven specials.

SAUDI ARABIA

HABITAS ALULA

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is on an aggressive tourism drive as it seeks to wean its economy from oil and follow in the footsteps of Dubai – and with a direct flight to Johannesburg in the pipeline, there’s never been a better time to visit the Kingdom.

Amid the ambitious development plans, Saudi Arabia is focusing firmly on its cultural heritage to draw in curious travellers, with destinations like AlUla in the northwest evoking the rich history of the region. Once the ancient kingdoms of Dadan and Lihyan, AlUla was a crossroads on the incense routes across Arabia and Egypt. The Nabataean kingdom was centred on the city of Hegra; Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site that is as famous for its labyrinthine streets as its ancient tombs and rich oases. And it’s into this cultural and natural wonderland that Habitas AlUla recently ventured, opening its latest ‘Habitas home’ in a striking amphitheatre of stone.

Habitas has quickly become a leader in sustainable wellnessfocused resorts worldwide, and Habitas AlUla is no different. Here each stay is founded on a deeply experiential stay, encouraging guests to explore both the natural setting as well as their own wellness goals. Days can be filled with canyon trekking – a desert alternative to Japanese ‘forest bathing’ – or in meditation

sessions surrounded by the fortress-like canyon walls. At the Thuraya Wellness centre, outdoor massage treatments take place in secluded alcoves of stone while days often begin with yoga and breathwork sessions. Outdoor cinema screenings and opendiscussion lectures take a deep dive into local history and culture.

Your home for this immersive journey of discovery will be one of the 96 guest villas, which range from premium Celestial Villas, Alcove Villas and Canyon Villas. Each is decorated in a palette of desert tones and textures, with private outdoor lounge decks, king-sized beds and indoor/outdoor showers.

Beyond your villa, you’ll find ample opportunity to mingle with fellow guests at the Ashar Deck Lounge or around the sweeping infinity pool. But perhaps the best bonding is over food, and at Tama – the word for “here and now” in Aramaic – the focus is on being present in the moment. The Tama menu is also a celebration of the unique location, tapping into the spice heritage of the incense route to create a marriage of Middle Eastern and international cuisine. True to the Habitas philosophy, it’s a discovery on many levels. This is a destination that shouldn’t be rushed, so allow time and space to journey properly.

GREECE COSME PAROS

It’s summertime in Europe and, trust me on this, there’s nowhere you’d rather be than the Cyclades. Far from the madding crowds of the Spanish or French coastlines, these islands of the Aegean are nothing short of paradise, a riot of fine living and pastel blues. Whether it’s the painted roofs above shimmering white walls or the seas the colour of a postcard cliché, the islands of the Cyclades group overdeliver on every front.

And while there’s certainly no shortage of quaint villages and small coastal hotels, Cosme Paros offers the perfect balance between resort-style service and comfort, and the low-key charm of a boutique hotel.

You could fly in from Athens, but there’s also the high-speed ferry (less than three hours from Piraeus) that arrives at the island port. From there a taxi will whisk you to the charming little village of Naousa, filled with cosmopolitan boutiques and charming seafront bars, for your check-in at Cosme Paros.

First, you’ll notice the sea: it’s just metres from the hotel with private sun loungers strung out along the shoreline. From there, let your eyes rest on the half-moon rim-flow pool just above the high-tide mark. Feel that smile spread across your face at the prospect of lazy days to come.

Cosme Paros has just 40 rooms, making it ideal for a low-key resort stay. The rooms take their cue from the Aegean beyond, all decorated in a palette of neutral tones that thankfully never resort to that Greek island cliché. Most suites offer private terraces, but the Astro Suites are a true delight with a private plunge pool, daybed and private dining area set just back from the beach.

Speaking of dining. The restaurants of Naousa are just a short stroll from Cosme Paros and are definitely worth exploring, but what if you can’t be bothered to get dressed up? At Cosme, the Parostia Restaurant is curated by celebrated Greek chef Yiannis Kioroglou, and he delivers a menu that speaks to the culinary traditions of both the island tavernas and authentic Grecian kitchens. Breakfast is served at the second restaurant, Volta, until a very respectable 11:30am. Lie-in, anyone?

Once you’ve eased into your holiday, it might be time to consider exploring a little further afield. There’s the busy port town of Parikia to wander around or the hilltop settlement of Lefkes. Unsurprisingly, the island has numerous great beaches, so hire a car and head out in search of a secluded stretch of sand to call your own.

“MY EARLIEST FASHION MEMORY is going through my mom’s collection of saris,” says Sumendra Chetty, buyer for Cape Town’s popular Merchants on Long store. “I remember just staring at all the beautiful silks and embroidery, and even at that young age appreciating all the craftsmanship that went into making a garment,” she continues.

It’s apt then, that Sumendra has made a career and fostered a passion around beautiful clothes – more specifically those made in South Africa and on the wider African continent. Born in East London, which she fondly refers to as “a really small city with lots of heart”, she studied social sciences at Rhodes University. This academic grounding, as well as her own South African Indian upbringing, gave her a real understanding of the importance of culture.

Her first job was as a sales intern for legendary design duo Marion & Lindie. Here, she bought her first locally produced purchase – a sleek black dress. “It’s still in my closet on rotation,” she says, “I loved the story behind it and how people in South Africa were being employed to make these garments, which meant so much to the economy.”

But it’s working at Merchants on Long, a concept store that celebrates the best of what the continent has to offer, that has really impacted Sumendra’s ethos of what she says is “preserving wonderful and unique techniques, crafts and cultures and growing our creative communities.” And while she had always had an interest in these notions, being surrounded by so many ethically produced local brands has been inspiring and educational.

“I am fond of every brand that is stocked at Merchants on Long, so much so that

many of the designers have become close friends. Lukhanyo Mdingi is an exceptional talent, Nyambo MasaMara is just growing from strength to strength and Sindiso Khumalo creates the dreamiest dresses,” she says.

And Sumendra’s dream outfit? “An Imane Ayissi evening dress from his Couture AW 21/22 Collection in a silk Mikado, hand beaded by Fondation Jean-Félicien Gacha in Cameroon. I would actually wear this every day if I could,” she gushes.

But don’t fret if the thought of wearing local is overwhelming – Sumendra can offer some great pointers to narrow down your search. She suggests popping into a few concept stores that ignite your passion for brands. “Merchants on Long is, of course, a must-see. Lots of brands in South Africa do produce locally, like Poetry, for example.” Alternatively, she suggests looking online at designers based in other African countries and supporting brands that are starting out by visiting markets like the Biscuit Mill in Cape Town. And while shopping locally can be pricier, Sumendra points out that “valuing what we have locally grows our economy –there are fundamental reasons for wearing locally made clothing and accessories. Like the saying goes: you vote with your money.” She adds, “People’s rights are a huge reason to support slow fashion, you have to think of the consequences when your T-shirt costs less than a takeaway coffee. What are the working conditions and the wages that people are tied to in fast fashion? I am happier knowing that fair labour practice is something we can be proud of. These pieces tell a story, they have soul and, most importantly, they will last far longer than an item from a fastfashion brand. The cost-per-wear means that the price goes a very long way.”

“My blue cardigan by MAXHOSA AFRICA is so special to me. It’s a classic piece from 2015 and has been along with me on many of my travels. It always gets so many compliments.”

“I am so in love with my shorts from LaurenceAirline, an Ivory Coast-based brand. They are classic and well-tailored and suit just about everything. They’re a staple for me.”

“My Brother Vellies leopard-print Congo sandals go perfectly with my Cape Town lifestyle. Brother Vellies founder Aurora James is an inspiration and her support of small businesses is noteworthy.”

“My gunmetal ostrich skin Aja from Okapi. They source all their leather from the food industry, which means it’s a zero-waste product. This piece has been used so many times.”

IT MIGHT NOT BE AS HIGHLY PLUGGED as those offered by some of its European counterparts, but Greece might be the last word in residence by investment schemes as the sun sets on the priceless Golden Visa. With Portugal shutting the door on its highly successful scheme, Greece is an enticing alternative as one of the most cost-effective Golden Visa programmes in Europe, opening the door to a second chance in the cradle of Western civilisation.

The biggest drawcard of the Golden Visa programme is not Greece’s ancient attractions, its glorious cuisine or those sandy beaches; it’s that applicants can be granted Greek permanent residency within less than six months after investing in property worth at least €250 000. At the current rand-euro exchange rate, that tallies to just under R5.2million, granting residency permit holders the right to live, work and study in the country.

A big drawcard of this is that as part of the Schengen Zone, Greek residents can travel visa-free throughout the 27 member states and can spend up to 90 days every 180 days in other Schengen states.

A Golden Visa provides both investors and their families with access to new markets and a host of business, career, educational, healthcare, tax and lifestyle opportunities for both present and future generations. Furthermore, many Golden Visa programmes allow the successful applicant to apply for citizenship after a few years of residence, such as the Portugal Golden Residence Permit Programme, which offers citizenship eligibility after five years, the Greece Golden Visa Programme after seven years and the Italy Residence by Investment Programme after 10 years.

Golden Visa legislation is currently in place in more than 100 countries, spanning five continents. Over 60 percent of EU member states have programmes that are functional and active, with the UK and the US having among the world’s longest-running Golden Visa programmes, says Henley & Partners, which promotes 35 such programmes.

With a relatively low barrier to entry, Greek Golden Visas are one of the last remaining options in Europe, as Portugal, Spain and other countries mull closing their doors for good on their programmes.

Even Greece is likely to become more sticky about these residency-by-investment programmes. From 1 May this year, Greek authorities reined in requirements by raising investment to €500 000 to make property more affordable to locals in Athens, Thessaloniki, and the islands of Mykonos and Santorini, but for now, the €250 000 threshold remains in place in other regions.

Now that Portugal is clamping down, Greece is most likely to benefit from the influx of foreign investment. International property, residency and citizen experts, Astons, believe this is likely to produce a greater interest in Greece. It said Greece not only saw the third-highest level of applications by US investors in 2021, but this level of activity was 740 percent higher than the previous year. It is currently one of the most popular schemes in Europe and one of the most affordable routes to European residency. Other countries, such as Cyprus and Malta, which require a $300 000 investment, are also likely to become more popular. However, Cyprus is not a member of the Schengen area and so a Cypriot residence permit does not allow for visa-free travel around Europe.

Immigration expert for Astons USA, Alena Lesina, said: “Spain’s decision to potentially close its doors to Golden Visa applicants is likely to spur a final wave of demand from those keen to invest before it’s too late, but, beyond this point, we expect Greece, Malta and Cyprus to become the frontrunners where Golden Visa demand is concerned.”

“All three options present a similar offering in terms of geography, lifestyle and climate, with the minimum investment requirement also remaining some of the most affordable of all Golden Visa offerings,” she adds. ■

TAPPING OUT, TO TAP IN WORDS MILA CREWE-BROWN

With staggering views and the promise of an autonomous bushveld experience, the new Elements of Altitude in the Waterberg is the revitalising tonic we all need.

Far from the discordant soundtrack of traffic and the incessant ping of your inbox, Cypiro Leopard Lodge in the Limpopo’s Waterberg Biosphere is a sanctuary with a unique approach to (dis)connecting. Throwing out the rule book with the promise of days filled with – input your choice of activity here – the lodge’s two new deluxe self-catering units, Ebony and Ivory, are a seductive mix of bush, beauty and autonomy.

Contrary to self-catering norms, these contemporary, sandstone-clad pods offer all the perks of five-star hospitality. Think crisp white bed linen, reliable Wi-Fi, a bottle or two of chilled wine upon arrival as well as freshly prepared dough to bake in your very own wood-fired pizza oven, or a private chef, should you wish. Designed to emulate the curvature of the pangolin, the pods are also kitted out with a modern, plush interior with pieces designed largely by the family business, Mija Furniture.

Eschewing the customary game lodge schedule, guests here are encouraged to settle into their own rhythm and take advantage of the freedom they have to reconnect with the wild. You can trade the standard crack-of-dawn game drive for a sunrise yoga session on the lofty deck, a walk on the farm in the company of sable, kudu or giraffes or forgo the typical evening game drive and buffet for a stargazing session upon a suspended net.

The new off-grid pods, collectively called The Elements of Altitude, claim the property’s best views, having once been pegged as the site of owners Pim and Rob Verdoorn’s own home. Amplifying the openness that comes with such a setting, each pod scans the savannah below from a rocky hilltop, its vantage coming to rest at the distant hills to the south.

Observed from the king-sized bed, the swimming pool and even the shower with its impressive curved glass window, the panorama of bush and mountain is omnipresent. With such unadulterated views and little to tear you away, Ebony and Ivory serve up the promise of unreserved relaxation.

During a recent stay at Ivory, I spent hours in a torpor, draped over one of their sun loungers. From there, I gazed between cloud-streaked sky and veld, watching the coming and going of grazing antelope. In another instance, I was awed by the sight of roughly 100 birds swooping and rising gracefully as one, as they carved a concentric course through the sky – their wings splitting the air on the turns with an audible whoosh. This utterly beautiful spectacle, I learned, was a training session for Rob’s upcoming pigeon racing season.

Just three hours’ drive, give or take, from Johannesburg, Cypiro Leopard Lodge offers easy access to Big Five game at Marakele National Park nearby, and their upcoming fine-dining experience with Parkhurst’s Embarc restaurant is sure to win over nature lovers and gastronomes alike. Here, guests have complete agency over how they’d like to design their stay, tapping into the pulse of the wild, while tapping out of the pace of conventional game lodges.

A CELEBRATION OF THE KLEIN KAROO

Mont Eco Private Game Reserve is more than a magnificent location; it has energy that emanates from the 450-million-yearold quartzitic sandstone mountains that hold the secrets of the past. This Big Five reserve, close to Montagu in the Western Cape, is 6 500ha of mountains, rivers and plains, indigenous fynbos and succulent Karoo vegetation. The reserve is totally off the grid, powered purely by solar energy, and the lack of light pollution makes star gazing a truly phenomenal night activity.

Creature comforts abound, but the magic lies in the intangibles. In our frenetic digital world, time is a highly desirable commodity, and at Mont Eco, the days are counted in moments paced to the rhythm of nature. A Karoo sunrise painting the sky in shades of pink, the early morning glow that colours the mountains, both reflected in the still waters of the vlei. A pair of waterbuck, pausing to drink, close enough to see the steam of their breath. The sight of a lone giraffe, and the first glimpse of the elephants heading for the sweet acacias…

Mont Eco does not shriek luxury. It whispers it softly and envelops you with a sense of total contentment.

Between morning and evening game drives to seek out the Big Five, days at Mont Eco can be filled with activities or spent relaxing. Discover the Karoo landscape on foot with a guided walk that reveals the miracle of the indigenous plants. Marvel at the tiny succulents growing on the rock face and the exquisite wildflowers that thrive in this semi-arid landscape. Hike to the fossil or San Rock art sites and imagine life here thousands of years ago.

Explore the nuances of the local wines with dinner and select a few bottles from the curio shop to take home a true taste of the Karoo. They say you should never trust a skinny chef, but Chef Marcel is the exception to that rule. Using fresh, locally produced ingredients, he conjures up menus with a unique flair that impresses the most discerning palate.

Doing nothing is the height of luxury, and Mont Eco has created spaces where you can just be. Take a gin and tonic or a pot of tea to the viewing deck and enjoy the endless vistas of unspoiled nature. Curl up with a book in the cosy lounge, or doze in the sun on the daybeds at the pool. Relax in the basket chair on your deck and absorb the sights and sounds of the bush. Take up birdwatching, and look out for the cheeky ostrich who frequently wanders into the camp.

Kingsley Lodge consists of a shared main area, a boma and seven spacious suites that follow the lines of an ancient riverbed. Each suite is private and melts into the landscape. Crafted from natural wood and stone with expansive glass doors and a spacious deck, your living quarters merge seamlessly with nature. The decor is earthy with neutral tones, rich textures and plenty of natural light. Highlights of the 80-square-metre suites are the traditional Karoo clay fireplaces, ideal for removing the chill of the fresh Karoo air, and the luxurious African Kho San bath ensconced under a basket weave dome.

A DESERT ROSE

WORDS INGRID WOOD

There is something to be said about the power of wide open spaces in nature and its effect on wellbeing. And the opportunity to revel in space – on foot, on wheels or even in the air –is for many the ultimate luxury.

Wilderness Little Kulala in the Namib Desert if the perfect place for this, bringing together solitude and splendour and full immersion in nature, but with all the comforts.

The focus on out-of-camp activities is what Wilderness terms a ‘living desert adventure’. From e-bikes and eco-sensitive quad biking to walking trails and hot air ballooning, the choices are tailored for optimal exploration of the magnificent surrounds.

Take in the vast expanse of the desert with an excursion to Sossusvlei where you can test your dune climbing on Big Daddy, one of the highest sand dunes in the world overlooking Dead Vlei, a pan dotted with the skeletons of 900-year-old camelthorn trees. Or you can explore the 3km-long Sesriem Canyon formed by the Tsauchab River carving its way across the topography for millions of years. The views from the top are breathtaking while the gorge itself is a geographical wonder.

Other ways to explore this remote area is on foot, e-bikes or quad bikes, with the possibility of seeing less common wildlife, such as the oryx, springbok, brown hyaena and Cape fox. And then, of course, you can opt for the bird’s-eye view from a hot air balloon, which is the only way to fully appreciate the scale and evocative panoramas.

The recently refurbished Little Kulula itself is a dreamy desert lodge. Each suite has its own pool and a rooftop from where you can enjoy sundowners or a private dinner. There’s a rollout bed on the shaded deck for an afternoon nap or a night under the stars. Add to this fairy-circle dinners, river oasis lunches, cultural campfire evenings and stargazing evenings in one of the darkest places on Earth. If a remote getaway is on your bucket list, it really doesn’t get better than this.

CAMINO

ONE OF THE MOST COVETED EXPERIENCES that tops many a travel bucket list has to be the gorilla trek. The primates shot to prominence after Dian Fossey, fearless researcher extraordinaire, put them firmly on the map, and eco-passionate Rwandans picked up the baton and ran with it. More than 60 years later, these highly endangered creatures are cosseted natural assets, and when it comes to progressive anti-poaching policies, habitat preservation and community partnerships, the country is in pole position.

Rwanda is a nation on its green game that rewards mindful explorers with extraordinary adventures that are enough to slay even the most seasoned travellers. Today, 12 habituated gorilla families are living in the biodiverse Volcanoes National Park (VNP), while an additional four reserves showcase a luxuriant aggregation of rare and endemic species that include the Big Five. It’s no wonder then that the tourism sector in the country is bullish and expected to turn a staggering US$800 million by 2024.

Rwanda’s northwest sees high precipitation, and my trek day dawned with a steady drizzle – not the ideal conditions for gorilla sightings since they become more elusive in inclement weather. Nevertheless, we gathered at the park HQ in Kinigi to meet our guides and secure the permits, and it was reassuring to discover that only eight people at most are permitted to visit each gorilla family a day, mitigating over-tourism and animal anxiety. The most important part of the briefing session is the rules of engagement: no sudden moves, minimal eye contact, wear a mask and don’t squirrel snacks into your pocket unless you feel like fobbing off a hungry monkey’s deft digits.

Important intel out the way, our little company set off on a pilgrimage across the potato paddies and up into the reserve towards the grand prize. Soggy ground underfoot made the going tougher than usual and the porters proved to be a great support, carrying backpacks and camera bags and lending a steadying hand when needed.

IF CONSERVATIONCONSCIOUS TRAVEL INTO UNTAMED TERRITORIES MAKES YOUR HEART SKIP A BEAT, CONSIDER RWANDA, THE LAND OF A THOUSAND VERDANT HILLS AND ONE OF AFRICA’S BRIGHT SHINING STARS

A trek can take up to two hours depending on the family’s location – or if you run into a crabby water buffalo like we did and need to detour unexpectedly.

But after a little while the walkie talkies crackled, announcing the discovery of the gorilla enclave, and just like that, we were eyeing the payoff. There sat Big Ben, the magnificent Sabyinyo Silverback, enthroned in an elevated bamboo nest like a charcoal portrait, fur beaded with raindrops and his handsome, leathery face all wet and shiny. As I focused my lens, he turned slowly and looked right at me, and there was a fleeting connection. The words of biologist George Schaller resonated: “No one who looks into a gorilla’s eyes – intelligent, gentle and vulnerable – can remain unchanged, for the gap between ape and human vanishes; we know that the gorilla still lives within us.” Luckily for us the clouds lifted and so did the mood, and soon the entire family began to trickle out from all sides to forage and socialise, seemingly oblivious to their twolegged guests. There were mothers with wide-eyed infants, toddlers frolicking and the noble alpha feasting on some juicy bamboo shoots. At one point a blackback – a younger male in the family – burst

through the bushes thumping his chest in show-off mode, and I was prevented from fleeing by a quick-thinking ranger’s firm hand on my shoulder. Guards, all armed, remain extremely vigilant and constantly make grunting sounds that, in gorillaspeak, signify submission. The entire 60 minutes was riveting and I was left with a treasury of precious memories.

All trekkers obviously need a base, and mine was Wilderness Sabyinyo, a storied lodge located 20 minutes from the VNP. Wilderness is a leading safari outfit in Africa and their properties are underpinned by blue-chip hospitality. Sabyinyo, meaning ‘tooth’ in Kinyarwanda, is all charm and quiet luxury, backing onto the densely forested volcanic foothills. The enviable location and proximity to the mountain means that guests are occasionally privy to a walkabout by the Hirwa gorilla family that call this area home. As Rwanda’s first community-owned lodge, Sabyinyo keeps the needs of their communities front of mind, actioning upliftment through their Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association (SACOLA), established almost 20 years ago in a bid to drive socioeconomic change through a range of conservation initiatives.

The beauty of a Sabyinyo stay is that every cent spent by guests finds its way to those most in need. It’s an inspiring example of how gorilla tourism is positively impacting lives on a daily basis, making a difference at grassroots level. Viva Rwanda. ■

One definite favourite, however, is Salmon Guru at the Opus Tower in Business Bay. The second outpost of the original in Spain, it is a fun, quirky cocktail haven worth experiencing. The cocktails are served in creative contraptions (Hello Kitty, anyone?) and are well thought out, and... be warned... strong. @salmongurudubai

TO DO

Spending a day out of any city is always a good idea. If you have time, take a road trip to the neighbouring emirate, Ras AlKhaimah. Just under a two-hour drive away, it offers some lovely beaches and a much more relaxed tempo to Dubai’s always-onthe-go energy. A personal suggestion is to take a scenic flight at Jazirah Aviation Club where you can hop on a microlight for a bird’s-eye view of what is popularly referred to as RAK. jazirahaviationclub.com

BONUS

If you’re South African and have a sudden craving for some home goods, head down to a shop called Hyperama in Al Quoz. There, you will find a range of South African delicacies including biltong, bunny chow and even some Woolies snacks.

TO EAT

Le Diplomate is a fashionable, Frenchthemed bistro on the vibey corner of 14th and Q Streets NW, within walking distance of upmarket Logan Circle, and is the go-to spot for long, lazy, Mimosa-filled Sunday brunches. Popular with both Hill aides and trendy tech startup founders alike, take my advice and order the pancakes with maple syrup and crispy bacon. Don’t forget to grab a loaf of their home-baked sourdough on your way out. lediplomatedc.com

If you crave weekend visits to bustling markets to pick up some ethically farmed sirloin steak or a box of free-range eggs, then Eastern Market is for you. Located in a 150-year-old heritage building in the pretty, Victorian townhome-lined Capitol Hill neighbourhood, Eastern Market is a veritable treasure trove of vendors selling anything from stained glass and ceramics to family-recipe bratwurst and carrot cake muffins. Get there early for fresh produce and keep an eye out for my favourite bake stand, Ravenhook Bakehouse –their Mardi Gras King Cakes are a delight. easternmarket-dc.org

TO DRINK

Sometimes, a hand-mixed cocktail enjoyed while perched atop a plush barstool is the only way to end a stressful week. At The Pembroke, located on the ground level of the Dupont Circle Hotel, you can relax in comfort knowing you’re in the hands of consummate cocktail professionals. The bar decor (by Martin Brudnizki) is a contemporary nod to the casual style of the 1950s, with lots of fresh flowers accenting cool white marble. Stop by for a full dinner after an exhibition opening at the nearby Dupont Underground (an art and events space housed in an old tram station) or, like us, pop in on a Friday night for one of their delectable Vodka Collins with a side of indulgent truffle fries. thepembrokedc.com

TO WATCH

The Studio Theatre in Logan Circle has been hosting and producing thoughtprovoking pieces of culturally incisive playwriting for over 40 years. Studio X falls under the umbrella of the main studio and is an important incubator for new and challenging work that might normally struggle to raise production funding. Racial and gender equality and the ever-present spectre of gentrification are just some of the prickly issues that actors tackle onstage at Studio Theatre. Go online or follow them on Instagram for regular updates to their itinerary. studiotheatre.org

Often second fiddle to the Potomac, the equally majestic Anacostia River winds down from neighbouring Maryland to form a fork with the Potomac at the bottom of the city. This fertile body of water was once home to the Nacotchtank Native Americans and has been the focus of environmental upliftment and rejuvenation by the surrounding communities since the late 1950s. The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is 20 miles of gorgeous, paved walkway under shady American Elms that stretches along the banks of the river from the nearby Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens down to the hip and trendy Navy Yards development. Whether you’re a regular runner or prefer a more leisurely pace, this trail is less crowded than the ones to the Northwest of the city and allows you to fully appreciate the work urban planners are doing to create a sustainable link between the more prosperous West and the historically marginalised East of DC. ■

WHEN DO YOU FEEL INSPIRED?

I’m most creative late in the evening when there are no phone calls coming through. I find I have the majority of my ideas during this stillness.

SHOPPING CHECKLIST? My most important considerations when choosing clothing are: Where was it made? From what is it made? By whom was it made? My work with Fashion Revolution South Africa has imprinted this on my mind.

TREASURED CLOTHING ITEM? I have a wool coat that was tailored for me in Pietermaritzburg. I treasure it as both my parents were alive at the time it was made and insisted that I have this done. It was paid for by my dad and cost a lot at the time. Twenty-seven years later, both my folks have passed, and this is a prize coat in my wardrobe. I know who made it, I know from what it was made and I know where it was made. Most importantly, it is the love that this jacket holds.

JOYS OF LIFE IN CAPE TOWN? It is my home and it’s a beautiful city. I love the friendships I have here and the landscape of the ocean and mountains.

FAVOURITE LOCAL RESTAURANT? There are many choices, but if I have to pick just one it would be Willoughby & Co (at the V&A Waterfront). It’s consistently great.

TRAVEL PREFERENCE? Although I’m not opposed to short breaks during the year, one long vacation is what I currently do. This is usually at the end of the year and allows me to be fully immersed in a country and its culture.

DRINK OF CHOICE? If it’s after 5pm (and sometimes just before!), I love a good martini – stirred, not shaken. And it must be a dirty martini with three olives.

UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE? I visited India in 2004. En route to the Taj Mahal, I stopped in Jaipur to see some of the local sites. I had my first dosa there and was very amused that it fit over two plates. Then, in 2022, I was on holiday in the US. There is a guy, Thiru Kumar, known as the Dosa Man who serves up authentic two-plate dosas right in the heart of New York!

RECENT INDULGENCE? Having a scent consultation. I enjoyed talking about different scents and finding out what I’m most attracted to before figuring out what scents work best for me.

SIMPLE PLEASURE YOU ENJOY? There’s a spot in my lounge where the sun beams in beautifully. This is where I love to sit and unwind with a good book, rooibos tea and either homemade scones or a sweet treat.

LEISURELY DAY HIGHLIGHTS? I love exploring the local fashion scene and looking at vintage stores. Another hobby of mine is visiting art galleries and museums. And of course, a pastime I really enjoy is eating local food.

IDEAL SHORT GETAWAY? Having visited New York city a few times, this is where I would go for 48 hours. I would most definitely have breakfast, lunch and dinner with different friends in the city.

KITCHEN SKILLS? I recently decided to learn how to cook authentic dosa. It takes two days to prepare and isn’t an easy recipe. But I took on the challenge and was happy with the result. I enjoyed the process as I have so many good memories associated with this dish.

Carry-on must-haves: Contact lens solution and lip balm. Back-at-home meal: Fish and chips as only done in Cape Town. Regularly used gadget: Earpods. Must-pack luxury item: A beautiful fragrance. My current obsession is Le Labo Santal 33. Repeat destination: The MET Museum in New York City. I have not completed it… Is it even possible to see it all? ■
