Become A Tennis Match Play Specialist
Introduction
As you know match play happens at different levels from just a small group who want to get together and play either a singles match or doubles match to the very highest Grand Slam match between some of the world’s best tennis players.
What ever level you are at or seek to be at, it is very beneficial to take time out and evaluate you and your game to enable you to find ways to improve.
In this short report we have put together a few searching questions to help you understand how you play today and perhaps what you need to do to arrive at the level of match play you seek.
Let us start with defining what in our opinion a match play specialist is and then give you some guidance in your quest to establish where you are on the path to excellence.
Definition of a Tennis Match Play Specialist
You already know what match play is, it is the process of two or four people playing at their very best to determine who will win.
The level of play will be determined by the standard of Tennis achieved by each competitor.

It is possible that the result will be determined by finding the player or pair that are the weakest players.
This is not always true, it has been known that on the day a player or pair with less racket and ball control skills has beaten players of higher standard. This can be achieved by having a stronger conviction that you are going to Win.
It could also be that your opponent is affected by the conditions or is not feeling fully fit or even they experienced some situation which means they have less focus on the game making it easier to win against them.
A match play specialist is someone who has the Tennis skills and also the mindset to stay focused for as long as it takes to win the game.
Defining your current skill level.
In reality it is almost impossible to improve something unless you know where it is today, so please take a few minutes and evaluate your skill level today.

Continue improving the parts of your game which are strong.
Try and improve the parts of your game which need improving or find an alternative shot to the one you have problems with.
If you are really struggling with part of your game, ask a Coach to assess what you are doing and to recommend an alternative grip or shot to improve the situation.
Watch another player who plays the shot you are struggling with well. Ask them how they hold the grip when playing the shot.
The best way to improve your game is to practice, find someone with good skills to practice with, avoid someone who plays at a lower level than you as this can easily affect your own game.
What do you consider to be the strengths of your game?
As I mentioned above once you know your strong shots you should keep practicing them as they will become your best chance of winning points. They will also often enable you to maintain control when competing against someone who knows your weaknesses.

What do you consider to be the weakest parts of your game?
Knowing your weaknesses has two major benefits, you can often move your feet so you are able to play one of your strongest shots instead of calling on a weak shot.
Knowing them will also enable you to improve them or find an alternative shot to replace them.
Doing your research.
As a match play specialist or a student of match play, what do you focus on when playing a match, is it:
Your racket?
The Ball?
The Net?
The player opposite you?

The player hitting the ball?
You may not know the answer right now, so why not put this question in your mind and the next time you play try and catch yourself having played the ball over the net as it approaches the opponent’s racket.
This is a very important question and could significantly improve your match play if you not only knew where your eyes were focused, you actually had them looking in the right place giving you more time to prepare for the return shot.
Conclusion
The information above is just a sample of the content I, Sean Medley will be sharing with you over the coming weeks and months.
To become an expert or specialist at anything takes time, knowledge and practice to achieve.
Very few people can just walk on to the court and play Tennis to a very high standard, even the very best have had to work extremely hard to achieve the level they are playing at today.
Remember even the very best have days when they struggle to achieve their best.
