Laughter Lawyer: Patch Adams, Til Eulenspeigel, and the Courage to be Irritatingly Happy By Debra Norwood Photos provided by Debra Norwood
WHEN I WAS A YOUNG GIRL, MY MOTHER GAVE ME A COLLECTION OF STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD. My favorite soon became the stories of Til Eulenspeigel, a Medieval German trickster who set out to change his world by mocking all conventionality, intentionally sabotaging and pranking all authority figures in his day whom Til judged to be deceitful, greedy or arrogant. I came to revere Til and his many travels and enjoyed how he had the ability to make everyone think he was a fool when in reality he was proving that the only fools were the victims of his humor. As a child I thought his exploits hysterical. In retrospect, and as I matured and understood the role of conformity in society, I came to realize that he was also a dangerous fellow, his “devil’s advocate” methods, questions and crass Statue of Til Eulenspeigel in front of the Dacha “punks” were bound to frighten as well as enlighten. Til Eulenspeigel is a clown that relays a much more sober message to society than the title of the beautiful Johannes Strauss musical concerto innocently portrays. A great example of Til and his zany way of “pranking” people into sanity in an insane world can best be summed up in one of my favorite tales of this not‐so‐crazy kook. The story is told that Til Elenspeigel in his many wanderings came upon a badly overcrowded and despairing hospital, where many people were dying. As they were desperately advertising for medical help, he chose to impersonate a doctor who then charged a large fee for what he claimed would be a miracle cure for the incurable. This medicine that would help anyone and everyone was to be created by taking the blood and other secretions of the sickest person in the hospital. Then, all whom were infirm would have to drink the

concoction so that they would be cured! Naturally, the patients, being offered such a deadly cocktail, quickly dispersed, all claiming they really were not so sick, at least not as sick as the sickest of them all! Thus, Til Eulenspeigel by his prank, proved to be the greatest of healers by miraculously causing all the patients to reconsider their own state of affairs and voluntarily leave the hospital rather than die from the cure. It came as no surprise to me, therefore, that I would come to equate meeting another famous healer, the “real” Patch Adams with the same excitement, delight, curiosity and trepidation that I attach to reading story after story of Til Eulenspeigel’s escapades. Til’s name loosely translated has been described as “Owl Mirror”’, a not so thinly veiled reference to the wise owl who turns a mirror towards others so as to see themselves for who they truly are. I believe Patch Adams is such a mirror for financial institutions, hospital administrators, malpractice carriers, doctors, medical personnel, medical schools and any professional association that claims to be involved in the social, emotional or physical art of healing. Like the famous Til of old, this modern day clown healer calls out the ridiculous inconsistencies in healing occupations, professional associations and patient participants. Patch Adams seems intent on creating a similar shaman’s prank in all modern day hospital settings: he tricks the sick into feeling and being well by making exercise and healthy living fun, and proposes a system of selflessness that would paralyze the insurance industry and patients themselves it seems, through the elimination of fees, and malpractice insurance. At first glance, Patch Adam’s interest in reforming our health system was in my mind, seemingly for the protection of the poorest of the poor’s interests, but as I came to later learn, everyone, even the rich, Patch theorizes, are availing themselves to substandard care…they are just paying more for it! In his egalitarian mind, all are victims, patients and doctors alike, and all need to learn how to love more and laugh more ‐‐and treat one another with respect and dignity to foment the type of social relationship and bonding that fosters healing. For me, coming upon a full anniversary of meeting and having spent further time researching Patch Adams, I now firmly believe is the soothsayer for a profession that is

Laughter Lawyer: Patch Adams (Continued) supposed to heal, but by becoming a gargantuan corporate model, has sometimes hurt more than it helps. As Patch states, in his book, Gesundheit: Modern medicine is crying out for hope. The American Medical Association (AMA) and medical and lay writers shout out in pain over the direction it has taken. Never have we better understood the mechanisms of body functions. Yet doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics, and health care professionals are rarely vibrant with the joy of human service. We are seeing a health care system in pain, people in pain, a world in pain. I believe something can be done to make it better. 1 It was the “something better” that Patch says he has to offer that tempted me to attend the 2014 Laughing Body Art of Care retreat at the Gesundheit Institute in West Virginia. I went there to see for myself, as a caregiver who has amply wrestled with the health care profession and has become a zealous advocate for my own family’s mental and physical welfare, primarily because I wanted to know if this crazy man with radical ideas about health, humor and clowning was a charlatan or a seer, a visionary or a profiteer. I had heard about him with mixed reviews, some claiming he was crass and abrupt, others claiming he was a gentle humanitarian. I had seen the movie, with Robin Williams portraying Patch Adams, and coincidentally, was watching the movie again, on the very day Robin Williams died. Like everyone else, I pondered what the relationship between these two great icons of humor and laughter really was. I was brimming with questions, but also fearful about Patch’s purported disdain for authority, and wondered if my being an attorney would invoke his derision, as so many revolutionaries feel about the legal profession. My main trepidation at leaving home was not, however, simply nervousness in meeting Patch Adams, that was something innocuous I knew I could overcome. It also coincided with my mother entering into hospice at home for the third time in her 12 years of being bedridden and living with me. My heart

sensed that this would not be one of those miraculous recoveries, and that my 94‐ year‐old mother could possibly pass away while I was gone. I messaged the Gesundheit Institute in advance, having been told that I would not have access to cell phone reception, and I asked for permission to call home to check on her status via their landline, which was graciously granted. When I boarded the plane to West Virginia, I realized I had not really left her side for that length of time in what seemed to be ages, and trembled wondering if I had made sufficient arrangements for others to care for her there while I was gone. What greeted me at Gesundheit Institute was a delight to all of my senses. As the driver who picked me up from the airport entered the gateway to the 321 acres where the Institute is located in West Virginia, the countryside was dotted by cheerful, homemade looking signs, a colorful bus, nature trails and magnificent rolling hills, a hidden waterfall, a large pond to swim and fish in, multiple butterflies, exotic insects, wildflowers, and deer that silently navigated among human structures with very little trepidation. I was immersed in the healing power of nature! The staff was cheerful and helpful. My room, shared with two others was incredible lodging in a prize winning, Russian farm‐style communal dormitory called the “Dacha”. Every day I explored another nook and cranny of what was an amazing feat of woodworking with pegs, not nails. I would split where I spent my time in several places, ‐the farmhouse‐‐ our kitchen and cafeteria, the Art Center and the Dacha. Breakfast, lunch and dinner would be a vegetarian repast that was not only nourishing to the body but extraordinarily tasty and pleasing to the eye both in texture and vivid color. It did not hurt to see the vegetables for dinner being harvested from the organic garden on site, either! Everyone I met, from the amazingly compassionate teachers from Clown One Italy, Ginevra Sanguigno and Italo Bertolasi, and a spiritual giant from Clown One Japan, Mariko Kanemoto, along with an ethereal and intellectual beauty, art therapist Margherita La Goia, and a very grounded land manager Rich Ludwig, to the former acrobat and long time Gesundheit! supporter, Joe Reichlin, and Gesundheit volunteers such as Gerome Graham, Billy Cunningham, and others, as well as the beautiful people who came from everywhere around the globe to share and live communally for that brief time, all added to the mix of the “Laughing Body, Art of Care”. I fell in love with each and every person I interacted with. It was easy to become an optimist in such an environment. Those first intensive days of impossible hikes and yoga were grueling for my unaccustomed body. I was in survival mode, and had to release my personal feelings about aging, being overworked, and suffering great stress over my mother’s medical status. I forgot myself, and all vestiges of my responsibilities as

wife, mother, attorney, radio host and speaker were superseded by non ‐stop activity. I became a dishwasher, recycler, an avid reader, watercolor painter and artist; a secret “angel” that was encouraged to find ways to help another to enjoy their time at Gesundheit in anonymous ways. My duties included opening my heart to love others unconditionally and expand my intellect to new possibilities and ways of thinking. As I was quickly immersed in vigorous exercise, community clean‐ups, yoga meditation, tai chi, therapeutic art, world music, and nature hikes and classes. I found myself unable to differentiate between work and play. I found myself laughing so loud, and so hard, enjoying my labors and the

Laughter Lawyer: Patch Adams (Continued) company I was in, that all memory of my troubles faded away. I was swiftly persuaded that maybe Patch Adams and those who loyally embraced his mindset were true healers after all! Patch flew in to train us for two days. He had been in Peru on a humanitarian clowning mission. As soon as Patch arrived I realized that Til Eulenspeigel had entered the “berg”. Like the depictions of the medieval jester, Patch was lanky, and incredibly tall. Deceivingly haughty and opinionated, soon it became apparent he was really as gentle, romantic and spiritual as he could be crass and irreverent. In spite of some things which frankly, were not to my liking,(upon asking for a picture with Patch, he responded that all pictures with him require one to be picking their nose… and our graduation picture included an optional group shot mooning ) I, nevertheless, could not stop laughing at all his antics, and his Patch Adams! stern mockery of all I held sacred in my life. I admired him, almost in spite of myself, and my preconceived notions of morality and propriety. He derided publically organized religion, the insular family, and all authority in general, yet when he questioned me about my mother, and about my health, he seemed genuinely caring, concerned and supportive. He was obviously very appreciative of his own mother, and all mothers who have sacrificed for their children. Yet in the same breath he blamed mothers for much of the selfishness and complacency in mankind, claiming, as he decried our group’s failure to return our mugs and cups to the kitchen, a result of “babying mothers who cleaned after their children rather than teaching them to wash and learn to be orderly themselves. “ Patch’s workshops primarily focused on our ability to love ourselves to be able to care for others, ‐‐“I love me!” was a phrase I wearily and somewhat half heartedly repeated long and often‐‐ and he was punctilious about demanding that we learn to listen and be emotionally and physically present in each activity. He was tireless, constantly in motion. His talents ranged from reciting amazing passages of

poetry, and excerpts of Russian and Latin American literature to being a prolific book reader of all subjects and a passionate hand written letter writer. He spoke of true love and how to be firm about one’s needs within relationships, slipping easily from serious matters regarding the making of a better society, clowning and medical malpractice to jokes about farting. “Farting” he said, was the one thing that was “funny” in any language, and clowning required no formal training….yet I observed that Patch Adams was meticulously training us in every way to be mindful, conscious, intentional and orderly in every exercise we engaged while learning how to become happy caregivers. The top event of the Patch’s arrival at the Gesundheit Institute was to be the renewal of the wedding vows of two of our instructors, from Italy, Ginevra and Italo. Patch Adams would be officiating, sporting a red nose after being submerged in a mud pit. That mud pit, by the way, took countless numbers of hours to dig and prepare, and every hour we delayed the ceremony had me obsessing over my prudishly shy self, going over to participate in a mass tangle of bodies in mud. I resolved to take matters into my own hands and opted to be in the loop by volunteering to create the pit. It was a watershed moment for me, as I donned a bathing suit and immodestly squatted in clay until I became acclimated to the freezing and almost congealed dirt. I found myself clawing and digging in with all my limbs to create pockets for others to descend into. The work was infuriating, exhausting and debilitating, but Patch’s running commentaries about diarrhea, as well as the seriousness of trying to make everything perfect to celebrate the love of two wonderful friends of his, as well his incredible and extraordinarily good nature caused me to join in the effort with renewed vigor and cheerfulness. The culminating moment of ridiculousness, insanity and enlightenment finally hit me, somewhere knee deep in a watery sludge that was requiring me to use every ounce of strength within me to knead into the proper consistency for others to be able to climb into the mud hole later. In that precious hour and a half that I had to share with Patch with four others while we created the mud pit I had a chance to observe and evaluate (and often laugh hysterically I might add) at this jester, this lover of mooning and excrement, farting and irreverence, just as Til Eulenspeigel was reported to have been also fond of, according to European lore. Many moments of laughter were interspersed with love and bonding with others who were seriously working alongside me, and I found that I had to ask myself, over and over, what was I personally learning about the Art of Care in all the sludge?

Laughter Lawyer: Patch Adams (Continued) The answer was tender and crisply emerging: I had arrived, days earlier, exhausted, and fearful of death, saddled with a body that was aching, hobbling and rheumatic. After hearing Patch talk about death and dying, and laughter and the joy of living that one can experience, even whilst drawing one’s final breath, as he had so often witnessed, I found myself breathing happier about my own mother’s situation and the choice I had made to care for her at home so many years. Being a caregiver had taken its toll on my nerves, yet I found myself enjoying living again, thriving in the environment of community that he had very intentionally created to be his “hospital without walls”. I became both a patient and a caregiver, and was learning by example. At Laughing Body, The Art of Care I was mentored on how to lead others to trust in their own instincts as well as my own. By the time I was safely embedded in a mud hole I had very intentionally created to be his “hospital without walls”. I became both a patient and a caregiver, and was learning by example. Laughter Lawyer: Patch Adams (Continued) stubbornness and desire to help others overcome the cold and stickiness by laughter and play emboldened me further to join in the mud slinging, jocularity and admiration for all of us in being willing to experience nature in its rawest of forms, all for the love of an adorable Italian couple , obviously in love, and out of respect for a tall, lanky ‐legged madman with a red nose singing “Fly me to the Moon” as he endorsed their union by the power invested in him by the mud pit! What joyous insanity! Patch Adams in the eye many skeptics, is a Pollyanna insisting that his Gesundheit Institute, his vision of a communal living hospital, must mandatorily be a place that “won’t charge money, take third party payments, or carry malpractice insurance”. The lawyer in me is not convinced he can win the approval of financiers who want guarantees and profits, nor do I see him compromising any of his dream hospital any to such investors. His intimate talks to our group let us know of his puzzlement yet profound understanding of profit versus purpose. He is well aware that even after having introduced the positive benefits of laughter in the medical profession and proving that clowning, caring and collective vision is possible to achieve, and is extremely healing, nonetheless, major funding for his hospital to become one that is truly free of charge, is still a work in progress. With constant challenges to his anti‐establishment philosophies, Patch, like Til Eulenspeigel, has invoked the derision and ire of many, and he reports that he regularly receives death threats. His hospital was once operational, but his larger dream of a physical place of healing in West Virginia with 44 beds and an accompanying EcoVilliage is not operational ‐‐at least not yet. Patch Adams infectious optimism, however, seems unrelenting, and in his own words, he has set himself to be “ irritatingly happy” in spite of the challenges of fund raising and the even greater tragedies of war, sickness and human devastation that he seems to find himself embroiled in while engaged in worldwide humanitarian clowning nearly every day of the year. So what did this reformed stick‐ in‐ the‐ mud attorney learn by being stuck neck deep in mud with Patch Adams and all the other sundry Canadians, Italians, Japanese and Americans wallowing in cold, sticky West Virginia muck? I learned with pride that I had done well in caring for my mother, “Yes! I love me for that!” I learned that I did right most of the time by my clients and my family these lo, so many years, and that I probably could have done it even better if I had encouraged even more community, communication and caring. I now am a firm endorser of autonomy rather than enabling. I learned I didn’t have to eat meat daily, and that my body could be pushed a little harder—a lot harder! I learned to question more. I learned to listen to the underlying question that the trickster and the prankster asks as he has us laughing at our own idiocy, which he terms “assanas” and I once again learned that the intentional fool is not as “asinine” (another Til Eulenspiegel reference, once again) as he pretends to be. Above all, I learned that one truly CAN and MUST set an intention to be happy, even in the midst of tears. In our last evening with Patch, it was impossible to ignore the nudging from within when Patch asked, bloomer bedecked, blue haired, and with a fork earring dangling near his handlebar moustache: “Have you ever held a starving baby in your arms? “

It is a question the giant answers himself, on film, holding an injured child of war, while a tear rolls down his cheek, as he’s softy hugging the injured infant. Our group heaved a collective sigh, visibly moved again and again as we observed Patch and fellow humanitarian clown, Ginevra Sanguigno, interacting with children and victims of war in a movie showing in the basement of the Dacha in West Virginia. “Clownin’ in Kabul” is a film of Clown One Italy, where Patch, and other humanitarian clowns are making history as they break more taboos entering as a conflict‐ resolution and peace‐building jesters in the aftermath of the war in Afghanistan then, and now, elsewhere around the globe. By request of the Italian government, Patch and his crew dared to visit villages and hospitals in Kabul and outlying areas, and challenge others to live, what Patch calls a ”paradigm of joy” founded in fun and service to others. As a conflict resolution attorney, I marvel at Patch and his theories on peace through fun and sociality as a “nasal diplomat”, as he calls himself, whenever he is wearing his red nose, and am glad to ad my red nose to his peace building efforts. Patch Adams insists that all poverty can be eliminated. His theory is simple—competition and greed lays at the root of all tragedy, be it upon those infants and children maimed from rockets or landmines or individuals ravaged by loneliness and disrespect in industrialized nations. He lobbies for compassionate caring with his red nose and mock dead fish in hand, and scrunches his face in foolish posturing in a desperate need to remind others that he is deadly serious about helping raise the standard of care for those patients dying in facilities deficient in antibiotics and electricity. He leads a motley crew of slapstick musicians and stilt‐walkers, jugglers and clowns in a caravan reminiscent of the same side ‐show Carnivals of yesteryear, no more props than a smile and bubbles or balloons. Like the medieval jester, Til Eilenspeigel, Patch Adams, over and over again, convinces the leaders of each place
he enters to wake up from their complacency on order to do more to ease some of the pain revolving around inhumanity and corruption. It is hard work, convincing people one person at a time. He draws to public light by his buffoonery the truth about conditions that should not be cloaked in secrecy, or

Laughter Lawyer: Patch Adams (Continued) tangled in bureaucracy. Patch Adams’ public presence in a decrepit area operates as a mirror and accusation to wealth and thus, as a notorious and outspoken witness, the famous jester leaves his mark to impact future generations. The afternoon that I boarded a plane to tearfully leave West Virginia, bidding farewell to the numerous international friends I had grown to love and admire, I knew I was leaving the utopian world of community and care called the Gesundheit Institute. As I settled in my airplane seat high above the clouds and far away from mud pits, art centers, organic food, mystic waterfalls and shamelessly bold deer, wildflowers and yoga, a new I woman, that for close to a week had lived in a communal society, unplugged from the internet, news and all temptations from the outside world, and I wanted to stay that way, just a little longer. I was visibly startled when I was offered a commercial magazine to read on my flight. I hesitated to accept, until I glanced down at the headlines, where the glossy cover screamed: These Doctors are Among the Best Doctor’s in America. Curious, I leafed through pages of photo‐ shopped pictures of impossibly handsome plastic surgeons, and neatly groomed cardiologists and urologists; my mind reeling with something akin to bemusement and disbelief, and an unspoken question swelled within me: Are these truly the Best Doctors in America? I closed my eyes, and pictured a much taller, older, quizzical looking man with a whitening handlebar moustache, scraggly white and blue hair pulled back in a long pony tail ‐‐a giant buffoon with cutlery for earrings, Hawaiian shirt and bloomers, and I asked myself: Where would all the contributors and sponsors of this survey rank Doctor Hunter (Patch) Adams in this parade of “Who’s Who” review of Best Doctors? Do they even know if Dr. Patch Adams exists? The answer lies somewhere in the wonderful description of Til Eulenspiegel’s enduring legacy by Rachel M. Haring, which in my opinion, could easily have been written about the “real” Patch Adams of today:

His appeal is universal and primal—he is a rogue and trickster who shows the honest truth and deflates the egos of the pompous. He is a complex jester who shows a wicked cleverness above all expectation. He delights in wordplay and deceit, sadism and humor, weaving a raunchy tapestry of the inherent bumbling and figurative dishonesty of man and woman, rich and poor, noble and common. He disgusts our sensibilities even as his mischievous genius delights our intellect. It truly matters little whether such a man ever drew breath; Til Eulenspiegel will continue to live in the hearts and minds of those who know him, winking and smirking at the eternal foolishness in us all.2 Rachel’s piece is entitled: Til Eulenspiegel was Here. And indeed he was, and still is, at least in my opinion. He dwells in a hospital without walls, in a mud pit in West Virginia, or can be spotted in Kabul, in an orphanage in Russia or in a festival in Belen, in Latin America. You can catch him at a conference in Quebec, or speaking before medical students in medical schools and hospitals around the globe. His name is Patch Adams, and like him or not, believe in him or not, he makes you think. And no matter what you decide about him, he’s going to continue in his resolve to be irritatingly and outrageously happy. 1

Life Image – Family History 5 ¶BEHOLD, I WILL SEND YOU ELIJAH THE PROPHET BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND DREADFUL DAY OF THE L ORD:

MALACHI 4:5‐6
Today, it is easier than ever to do Family History. However, believe it or not, it begins with you. What is your history? Quite a few people have diaries, and more have journals. But, what if you haven’t been keeping a journal, or what if you started keeping a journal later in life? How do you pull together a Personal History for your family to be able to learn about you, and about the time you lived in? Simple. Below are listed several thought/memory provoking questions that you will print off and cut in slips; then, you will pull one each day and write down the question and the answer. Your mind will begin to work, and then your memories will begin to flow from you mind to your pen (or keyboard, but I recommend pen, let your great grandchildren see your handwriting!).
What is your earliest memory? Who was your first best friend? What is the first movie you remember going to a theater to see; to the drive-in? Who or what was your first concert; symphony; play; musical? Did you go to Bible School? What memories do you have of the classes and activities? What was the first amusement park you went to and who did you go with? Where was your first apartment?

Wellness: Vitamin D – The Sunshine Vitamin By Kally Efros WE HEAR ALL ABOUT VITAMIN D AND ITS ROLE IN OUR HEALTH . But what is shocking to many is that even in states like Arizona, where we have abundant sunshine, more and more people are deficient in this important nutrient. How can this be? Let’s take a closer look at this important Vitamin and how we can get sufficient amounts.
What is Vitamin D? Vitamin D is really a fat‐soluble hormone that the body can synthesize. A vitamin that is fat‐soluble is stored in the fatty tissues and the liver. There are different forms of D, and D3 is synthesized by humans when the skin is exposed to ultraviolet‐B (UVB) rays from sunshine. This mega important hormone affects nearly every cell in your body.
Why are we deficient in vitamin D? The main reason for Vitamin D deficiency is limited exposure to the sun. After all, Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. Research indicates that your eyes need exposure to sunlight to signal the body to make Vitamin D. Due to the fear of skin cancer, many people use sunscreen on a regular basis, and wear sunglasses or hats. Even regular prescription glasses block UV rays. People spend more time indoors these days, especially during the daylight hours when there are enough UV rays for the body to synthesize Vitamin D. On top of that, even if you do spend time outside, the color of your skin, ozone amount, latitude, clouds, and time of the day all affect the process of synthesizing Vitamin D. Certain medication can also interfere with your ability to synthesize and utilize D. To find out more, check with your pharmacist. Individuals that are overweight may also be at risk for low levels of vitamin D. It is believed that the extra fat in the body holds onto the vitamin rather than releasing it. There are people with digestive issues such as Crohn’s disease or celiac disease that are unable to absorb enough of the vitamin. Globally, as we age, we have a decreased ability to synthesize D from the sun. Diet deficiencies may also be contributing to this challenge as you need other vitamins and minerals to work together in synergy. Many people are now eating a diet consisting of fast food and overly

processed foods and are commonly missing a basic healthy diet of fruits, veggies, greens, whole grains, healthy fats, protein and plenty of water. Simple blood work can tell you if you are low in vitamin D.
What are side effects of low vitamin D levels? Low levels of Vitamin may cause you to experience bone or joint pain, gout, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, increased asthma symptoms, cancer, type 2 diabetes, increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, erectile dysfunction, depression, schizophrenia, fibromyalgia, cavities, periodontal disease, psoriasis, PMS, infertility, autoimmune conditions, fatigue, weight gain, sleep issues, concentration challenges, headaches and even constipation or diarrhea.
Where do you get Vitamin D? The best source of Vitamin D is from the sun. Because Vitamin D is fat‐soluble, it can store in the body for a ‘rainy day’. So many people are afraid of the sun due the concerns over skin cancer. Interestingly, avoiding the sun increases your risk of cancer. We need the sun and should not be afraid of sunshine. You don’t need hours of sunshine each day, but more likely a few minutes depending on your skin tone. This short sun exposure should be without sun block, glasses, sunglasses, hats, make‐up or moisturizers that block UV rays. Close your eyes, and sit and relax in the sunshine – the more skin being exposed, the better. For my latitude in Arizona at 3,000 feet on a clear day in May at 10:30 am, with my fair skin, I only need about 5 minutes of sun exposure. That is something I can do, even with my busy schedule. The farther north you go and the more cloudy days that you have, you are more at risk. So on sunny days you need to get your exposure and store up your Vitamin D. There is an app that I love, and no I don’t get paid to mention them. It is called dMinder and you can read more about it at: http://dminder.ontometrics.com/. There is a free version that I use or you can upgrade for more features. It will tell you the UV Index, how much recommended time you should spend in the sun, depending on the time of day, how much skin is exposed, and keep track of your Vitamin D. You can also check www.weather.com or other weather apps and channels for UVI information.

Vitamin D (Continued) When you spend enough time in the sun to produce sunburn, you are not producing Vitamin D. When your body gets its share of Vitamin D synthesized, it also stops producing D. You cannot overdose on natural Vitamin D from sunshine. You can safely get the Vitamin D you need from the sun by controlling your exposure. Increasing your Vitamin D levels does seem to offer protection from cancers. Make sure that you are drinking your water because sunbathing without water creates a stress on the body. Consuming foods high in anti‐ oxidants such as fruits and vegetables also protects the body and help to avoid sun damaging your skin. You also need a good balance of Omega‐3 oils, which is always a good first line of defense against sunburn. You need a UV Index of 3 or more to get the needed UVB in sufficient amounts. If the sun is producing long shadows, you are not going to have enough. Also avoid taking a shower immediately after sun bathing. When you can’t get your Vitamin D from sunshine, look to foods like: egg yolks (farm eggs), butter, fish liver or oil (Cod‐liver oil), fatty fish, or Portobello mushrooms. There are many Vitamin D supplements on the market. Make sure your supplement is D3. The challenge with supplementation is that you have to take so much to get enough D in the system. This is why sunlight is the better choice. Remember, those with absorption issues will even have a hard time with supplementing D. You may want to speak to a specialist, like an herbalist to make improvements. You can get too much Vitamin D in supplement form, so if supplementing, observe recommended amounts and speak to a health care provider. One of our favorite D Supplements is D3‐K2 Liposomal from DesBio. The liposomal delivery method allows the nutrients to bypass the digestive tract and get to the cells of the body. Talk to your health care provider for more information about getting a good Vitamin D supplement.
How will vitamin D benefit me? Vitamin D is essential for your overall health. It boosts your immune system. It is important for all your muscles, strengthens the cardiovascular and respiratory system, helps with brain function and

development, and has anti‐cancer effects. Vitamin D helps reduce inflammation and can help decrease levels of C‐reactive protein (an inflammation marker). Getting enough Vitamin D boosts your mood and helps with depression; it can even improve your memory. Vitamin D is needed by the body to make repairs including damage from cancer cells. It even affects your DNA. Scientists have discovered that nearly 3,000 genes are influenced by Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body utilize minerals like calcium and promotes bone mineralization – creating strong bones and helping prevent osteoporosis. This effect also means fewer cavities. Now that summertime is here, take advantage of nature’s free offering of sunshine. After all, you are literally solar powered.

Summer Reading List for Women By Gina Davis
SUMMER TIME. VACATION TIME. SUMMER AND VACATION ARE GREAT TIMES TO WIND DOWN AND LAZY THE AFTERNOON AWAY. A perfect past‐time for
this is reading a thought provoking science fiction or a fun/funny romance with a little fantasy thrown in there.
Photo Credit: Reading a book at the beach via photopin (license)
I've been anticipating getting into a great summer read or two or three or four or....Ha! You get the picture. Looking through my list I am finding a multitude of genres like Contemporary Romance, Dystopian, Fantasy, Historical romance, Non‐fiction, Science Fiction, and Women’s fiction.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUMMER READING
Series There are several series, that I am on the last few books. I particularly like to read a book before seeing the movie/video and the last in Divergent series will be out on video shortly. Genre: Dystopian Allegiant ‐ Book 3 (Divergent Series) by Veronica Roth (Author) Excerpt from Amazon description: ….continues the dystopian thrill ride that began in Divergent. ….As war surges in the factions of dystopian Chicago all around her, Tris attempts to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Check out the other two in the series –
Divergent ‐ Book 1 (Divergent Series) by Veronica Roth (Author) Insurgent ‐ Book 2 (Divergent Series) by Veronica Roth (Author)
Series are one of my favorite. I started reading this next one, because of my husband’s interest in the ‘World of Fast Cars’, He drives a drag car himself and enjoys watching NASCAR. Genre: Contemporary Romance The Chase ‐ Book 4 (Fast Track Series) by McCarthy, Erin These books a based in the fast‐paced world of NASCAR. The men and women of the NASCAR world have everyday struggles for love just at a faster pace. There are 8 books in this series ‐ Flat Out Sexy, Hard and Fast, Hot Finish, The Chase, Slow Ride, Jacked Up, Full Throttle, and Final Lap. These title are great, love the double entendre. I love a good historical romance and the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn, has to be one my favorite historical series. These are fun summer read. Caution: With many of these, I read them one sitting, because I could not put them down. Genre: Historical (Regency era) Romance The Duke and I ‐ Book 1 (Bridgerton Series) Mass Market Paperback by Julia Quinn Excerpt from Wikipedia: The Bridgerton family consists of eight siblings and their widowed mother. In the novels, the Bridgertons are well respected and favored among British society. The Bridgertons are an extremely loving and tight‐knit clan. The series comprises eight books in which each of the siblings finds true love. Each book is set against the backdrop of upper English society during the period of Regency England. The others in this series are The Viscount Who Loved Me, An Offer From A Gentleman, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, To Sir Phillip, With Love, When He Was Wicked, It's In His Kiss, On the Way To the Wedding, and The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After There are also 2 anthologies based loosely in the Bridgerton world The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown and Lady Whistledown Strikes Back .

Summer Reading List (Continued) This next series caught my eye right away. The cover kept drawing my eye. Description grab me, then the reviewers cinched it for me. Genre: Fantasy Snow Like Ashes ‐ Book 1 (Ashes Trilogy) by Sara Raasch 2nd in series, Ice Like Fire due out Oct, 2015 Excerpt from Amazon description: Game of Thrones meets Graceling in this striking fantasy tale of dark magic, dangerous politics, and discovering your true self. Sara Raasch’s debut fantasy is a lightning‐fast story of loyalty, love, and controlling one’s destiny.
Standalones Next I was looking for a few quick reads, that didn't pull me into a world building style book. Genre: Fiction The Wonder Garden Hardcover by Lauren Acampora Excerpt from Amazon description: In her stunning debut collection, The Wonder Garden, Lauren Acampora brings to the page with enchanting realism the myriad lives of a suburban town and lays them bare. These linked stories take a trenchant look at the flawed people of Old Cranbury, incisive tales that reveal at each turn the unseen battles we play out behind drawn blinds, the creeping truths from which we distract ourselves, and the massive dreams we haul quietly with us and hold close.
Second one in this group. I recently found Jane Green and have been reading her backlog. All her books are stand alone. Genre: Women's Fiction Bookends by Jane Green Excerpt from Amazon: Bookends, Jane Green's third comic novel of contemporary love, proves beyond a doubt that when it comes to light reading, plot is everything. Catherine Warner and Simon Nelson are best friends: total opposites, always together, and both unlucky in love.

Another book that was a movie earlier this year and will be a superb additions to your summer reads. Genre: Women's Fiction Still Alice by Lisa Genova Excerpt from Amazon: Neuroscientist and debut novelist Genova mines years of experience in her field to craft a realistic portrait of early onset Alzheimer's disease. Alice Howland has a career not unlike Genova's—she's an esteemed psychology professor at Harvard, living a comfortable life in Cambridge with her husband, John, arguing about the usual (making quality time together, their daughter's move to L.A.) when the first symptoms of Alzheimer's begin to emerge. First, Alice can't find her Blackberry, then she becomes hopelessly disoriented in her own town. Alice is shocked to be diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's (she had suspected a brain tumor or menopause), after which her life begins steadily to unravel. She loses track of rooms in her home, resigns from Harvard and eventually cannot recognize her own children. The brutal facts of Alzheimer's are heartbreaking, and it's impossible not to feel for Alice and her loved ones, but Genova's prose style is clumsy and her dialogue heavy‐handed. This novel will appeal to those dealing with the disease and may prove helpful, but beyond the heartbreaking record of illness there's little here to remember. I am really excited about the movie Tomorrowland, Disney is one of my favorite brands. Sadly there is not a book written for this movie. In my search though I ran across this one that takes a look a science fiction in books and compares it to reality. Genre: Non‐fiction Tomorrowland (Not the Movie) Drats! Tomorrowland: Our Journey from Science Fiction to Science Fact Paperback by Steven Kotler Excerpt from Amazon description: ...those pivotal moments when science fiction became science fact…and fundamentally reshaped the world. Now he gathers the best of his best, updated and expanded upon, to guide readers on a mind‐bending tour of the far frontier, and how these advances are radically transforming our lives. This next one looks a little more intense, yet it caught my eye immediately, therefore on the reading list it goes. Genre: Science Fiction

Summer Reading List (Continued) Seveneves: A Novel by Neal Stephenson Excerpt from Amazon description: What would happen if the world were ending? A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.
My final pick for this list, yet by no means the last book I will be looking at for the summer is from the Classic genre. For a while I have known there were books I have not read, that I have wanted to read. Btw, I believe there is a movie based on this book. Genre: Classic Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Excerpt from Amazon description: a mentally challenged man receives an operation that turns him into a genius...and introduces him to heartache.

Stepping Into Family History “…turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers” By Bennie Denton WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY? FOLLOWING THE SIMPLE STEPS OF RESEARCHING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY. The first thing you need to do is write down what you know about your family. There are many website that you can use to do the research, starting with www.familysearch.org. This is a free site. It is really important to know about your ancestors. It could help in medical situations. Knowing where they lived and what they did to provide for their family is a part of family history. When you are searching for ancestors prior to 1880 census remember it was taken by the Federal Marshalls. A lot of people hid from the law in that time period. For the 1880 census, the federal government hired part time workers.

Records that have been indexed make it so much easier to find who you are looking for. Go to the original record to see what jobs they did, if they owned or rented. It is very important to look at these records to see how long they had been married and the number and ages of the children. This will give you a clue if the father has been married previously. Make sure you document all the information and where you find it. A good document is either a census record, marriage, birth or death record. Don’t use the website as documentation. Families need to be connected. Contact the oldest members of the family that you can find. Ask them if they have an old box of pictures that you can look through. Take something with you so you can get copies of the pictures. An example is an IPhone or scanner. Most of the time the person you visit can tell you who is in the picture and something about them. It is really good if you can record the whole visit. The other free site I use is www.findagrave.com. This is a good site. You have to remember that the person inputting the information is either a family member or friend of the family or someone that just catalogs cemeteries and enters the information that is on the marker.

Stepping Into Family History (Continued) If the person has died in the last 60 years, try to find the obituary notice. They are pretty accurate and it gives you a glimpse into the family. You can contact relatives of the deceased and ask for information on the family. Another site you can use is a paid site www.ancestry.com. You can use this site for free Family history information collected through oral histories is shared with families in in the Family History Africa. © 2015 Intellectual Reserve, Inc. All rights reserved Centers located at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‐day Saints building or at local libraries. With this site you have access to store family history on this site. Through the family tree section you can most likely connect with other family members. Most siblings have a few old pictures. This will give you the opportunity to gather a great collection of pictures of the family that tell a lot of the family story Another reason to use Ancestry is that you can use the publisher part of it and you can do that with a free account. There are many genealogy websites on the internet. Some are really good. I mostly use the free sites with one exception. I do use ancestry.com. Ancestry and Family Search make it easy to research your family history. I like looking at the original records and you can do that from these two sites. Indexers have done a wonderful job making it easier to do research but you have to remember that they are human and mistakes are made. The census taker wrote down what he heard and they also made errors. Doing research can bring the family closer together. The whole family will want to see what you have found and yes they all will want copies of your records.

June + Father’s Day = Grilling Season! WELL, ACTUALLY, ANYTIME = GRILLING SEASON ACCORDING TO THE ALPINE WURST AND MEAT H OUSE . Located in Honesdale, in the Northern Pocono region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, The Alpine Wurst & Meat House has been a premier manufacturer of German sausages, smoked ham, Kassler Rippchen, cold cuts and meats for over thirty years. The three on site smokehouses assure you the best authentic smoky flavor; while providing the best quality sausages produced with the utmost care and attention. A family business since inception, the current owners of The Alpine are committed to using the same quality recipes created by the founders. Klaus Eifert first opened the Alpine in 1977 to provide customers with the authentic fare of his homeland, Germany. His son Mark grew up in the business working alongside his parents. "Many times I remember people would say that my parents would not make it. Well, they were wrong. My parents worked, sacrificed and worked some more to make our business a success." Mark says. It had been Mark's ambition to eventually run the family business. Following graduation, he traveled to Germany to learn firsthand the tools of the trade. He spent three summers as an apprentice butcher in Germany, perfecting his skills. Mark offers up some grilling tips for the season, of course using his Alpine sausages as the best case scenario. ‐ To eliminate the burning and the flare‐ups ‐ keep the fire low. ‐ Use indirect heat – meaning place the sausages in the space between the flames, not directly over the flames and close the lid ‐ Keep the sausage casing unbroken ‐ careful with the tongs! ‐ Move the sausages away from any flare‐ups that do occur

‐ Don’t pre‐boil the sausages ‐ Don’t overcook. Check doneness by inserting a meat thermometer through one end of the sausage for a reading of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
As for the sausages themselves, these are some of the Alpine’s favorites: Bratwurst, Bockwurst, Knockwurst, Kielbasa and of course the Alpine’s famous Franks – available either skinless or natural casing in all beef and beef and pork. Don’t be afraid to try the all‐white meat chicken sausage or the Cajun style Andouille sausage. All of the Alpine sausages are made onsite in Honesdale, PA.
If you can’t visit the Alpine, be sure to visit their online store to order some German favorites in time for the grill cover to be stored away this season!

Distinction Beyond Compare, Bespoke Writing Implements By Carolyn Bendall Jack Row, a young man living and doing business in Great Britain, has talent and gumption many wish they had. At the usually rambunctious age of 15, Row began working with a Goldsmith on the weekends and after high school. After working for a year with the company his creative skills began to awaken and the need to design began to go beyond his hobby of putting together models. Working with craftsman who made jewelry for the Queen gave him the inspiration to pursue this itch. Then, he was a victim of downsizing. So, college became his next pursuit. Where he continued in his passion, and received a B.A. in Jewelry Design. Part of the degree involved a study of the technology in the industry. He had gained invaluable knowledge while apprenticing during high school, giving him the skill of the traditional techniques of jewelry design. He combined the two skills and for his college project he designed a fountain pen. The luxury store, Harrod’s, was at University and when they saw his work on the fountain pen, he was told to contact their buyer. At the ripe young age of 23, Row was setting a new precedent for stepping into jewelry design. Many waited years to hear the magical words, “Contact our buyer,” and he was hearing it while still at University. He began to design his pens, then added matching cuff links. Each of his creations’ filigrees are done by hand by Row, himself. Each pen has its own distinctions and no two are the same, as well as the cuff links. Each design is made exclusively for the client. A diamond, or maybe a ruby will be the jewel,

then gold or silver will be decided. Therefore, each piece bespoke. As Row began to develop his style and sought retailers, he was told over and over, “The designs are too big and bold, they won’t sell.” Row, smiled, knowing that they were already in Harrod’s. His personality didn’t allow him to slow down with all of the negative responses, and for the good of his company in the end. His pieces are now available in Harrod’s in London and in Burlington Arcade; he is also in Holland. His business flourishes by word of mouth and via the internet. The Middle East accounts for a large number of his writing instruments, and the United States account for a large amount of his cuff links. The cuff links that are all one piece are completely made by Row. Swivel or toggles are manufactured, and Row will do the cover. He also has letter openers. The pens can be fountain, roller ball, or fine point. If the fountain pen is chosen, it can be ink well or cartridge. Row uses an Archimedes screw, which allows transition between ink well or cartridge (simple remove the screw for the cartridge).

Beads Are For Men, Too! By Gari Anne Kosanke
When most men think of beads, they think of girly sparkle and pretty colors. But beads are for men too! They can be seen EVERYWHERE if you know how to look for them.
Beads are just an object with a hole through it and are incorporated into jewelry for men in countless ways. Men’s necklaces are dark, rugged, chunky shapes and perhaps a charm for luck or protection.

iShare Agency Spotlight: Dr. Mary G. Patton By Sherri Henley How does Dr. Mary G. Patton fit into the iSHARE Agency client focus of this article? Many of my clients, with Dr. Patton being a prime example, initially present their immediate need as “social media education” and “DIY business development.” However, once we began the discovery process in the first, of often several two hour sessions of business brainstorming, the initial project quickly becomes clear to my client that their business aspirations encompass more than the original intent for which I was employed. This is when the Sherri Henley Intelligence project becomes an iSHARE Agency initiative which fills the gap of expertise in areas which I did not possess, in full. iSHARE Experts specialize in delivery of a variety of skills which benefit my client and their desired end‐result. What began as an exclusive Sherri Henley Intelligence client becomes an inclusive iSHARE Agency project management piece landing on my calendar as #TeamDrMaryGPatton. Now, I along with my iSHARE Agency business partner, Cheryl Malik, have the privilege of working with a collaborative team of experts to deliver a top‐notch finished product and plan, combined with a variety of action‐items for the continued success of our #ishareclient. Let’s continue with the case of Dr. Mary G. Patton: In addition to social media intelligence, Dr. Patton’s immediate needs encompassed the foundation of business which specialized and focused on content that pointed to her ultimate message ‐

#healingthehurt. Dr. Patton needed and wanted a clean and responsive website with professional photography to spotlight not only her specialty, but also her longevity and approachability in a well‐balanced digital story (website and photography skillfully designed by iSHARE Agency Founding Partner, Cheryl Malik @ www.drmarygpatton.com), business cards, digital one sheet for print (printed by iSHARE Expert, Bruce Orpet), along with other variables of what is now a completed iSHARE Agency project. Enter the conversation with Dr. Mary G. Patton in this exclusive interview: Sherri: Dr. Patton….tell me about your business and why you choose to work with people who have endured emotional trauma. Dr. Patton: I am an Author. Speaker. Consultant…specializing in healing the hurt resulting from past emotional trauma through the application of biblical principles in a therapeutic manner. My decision to work with victims of emotional trauma arose out of a need to assist with issues that my grandson was having in his elementary school. Once I began my research, it became apparent to me that this was a population that appeared to have been grossly in need of service and appeared to have been underserved. I realized that the abused as well as their abusers were in need of healing. That is when I made it my personal mission to intervene on their behalf in an effort to assist both populations in living their best life! Sherri: What are the titles of your books and how will they help people who are in search of healing? Dr. Patton: The title of my first publication is Emotional Trauma in School: Cause, Effect, Cure. This one was inspired by my grandson. It reveals of the reasons and ways that inappropriate teacher behavior affect the overall social, emotional and academic success of students. My second book, titled Therapeutic Application of Biblical Principles for Overcoming Emotional Trauma is the cure that was referred to in the first publication. Both books are enlightening, and curative in that they are designed to uncover residuals of past trauma issues that may still be effecting the quality of an individual’s life.

iShare Agency Spotlight: Dr. Mary Patton (Continued) Sherri: What type of service do you offer to those who are hurting? Dr. Patton: I offer a complimentary fifteen minute needs assessment to individuals who are seeking help from emotional pain. In addition, I offer sessions focused on healing the hurt which can be packaged according to individual need. Session topics include: Healing the Hurt 101 – This session is one and a half hours in duration, and is highly recommended as the first step in healing the hurt. Additional topics (sessions) can be packaged according to client needs: Building Rapport Identifying and Facing Issues Breaking the Silence Gaining Control of Emotions Establishing Accountability Understanding Personality and Behavioral Flaws Building Your Support System To Confront or Not to Confront Letting Go to Grow Restoration Fortifying Your Spiritual Self Sharing Your Pearls Sherri: Do you offer a service for the trainer…those who work with people who are hurting? Dr. Patton: Absolutely! I offer a Healing The Hurt Conference which includes training for those who wish to work with trauma survivors from a biblical perspective. The training includes the complete workbook, all twelve lessons! Sherri: Name a few examples of people that could apply your sessions to healing, i.e., veterans, etc…. Dr. Patton: Yes, veterans can most definitely benefit from my sessions. Also cancer survivors, accident victims, police officers, teachers, or anyone who has suffered any type of traumatic experience who is open to applying biblical principles to their area of hurt or emotional pain. My sessions are not psychotherapy; however they deliver great benefit as an additional resource. Sherri: Since your book is based upon Biblical Principles…are you open to working with people who are non‐Christian?

Dr. Patton: Yes, absolutely! The lessons (a marriage of psychology and Bible principles) are easily adaptable. As a professional, I am willing to work with anyone who is willing to work with me in a mutually respectful and professional relationship. Sherri: How and why did you become an iSHARE client? Dr. Patton: It was interesting how that all came about! I connected with you, Sherri, on LinkedIn in an effort to improve my digital skills, and online presence. It was awesome to experience the knowledge, oversight, and professional resources available through your system of referral as we worked together to update and present a more robust presence on my social media platforms. Sherri: Name the most valuable tool you learned from iSHARE… Dr. Patton: It is difficult to name just one, Sherri. Everything that I learned was valuable. I guess if I must name one, I will have to say training, since that is inclusive of other valuable tools that I learned, such as business development and branding. Sherri: You have had the unique experience of working with not only iSHARE, but also Digital Citizen University (DCU). Do you consider yourself a #digitalcitizen? Dr. Patton: Sherri, I am going to say yes to that question….As you remember, I entered this process with you to become a #digitalcitizen with very little knowledge! As a matter‐of‐fact, I did not even know what a hashtag was! With your instructions, and let me add PATIENCE with me, I have made significant gains in terms of digital intelligence…. thanks to you and DCU! Sherri: Sum up the true value of your purpose ‐ #healingthehurt Dr. Patton: Residual pain from past trauma issues can, as you know, be devastating, with the potential to negatively impact every aspect of an individual’s life because it distorts the way one views their world.
I believe that #healingthehurt will change one’s perception of self and their world‐view, as well as contribute to a more peaceful, productive society. I further believe that #healingthehurt will lead to improved overall quality of life and relationships with others. It has value for anyone who has experienced emotional trauma from any source.

Dermelect’s Key to ‘Ageless & Youthful Hands’ Peptide‐Infused Innovations for the Remedy & Protection of Damaged Nails By Amos Lavian Founder/President, Dermelect® Cosmeceuticals
WHEN IT COMES TO REVEALING, OR CONCEALING, YOUR TRUE AGE, THE HANDS ARE HUGE INDICATORS . We go to great lengths to prevent the signs
of aging on our faces and necks, but it’s the hands that end up being abused, yet neglected, the most. Think about what your hands are put through on a daily basis. Constantly immersed in water and exposed to nature’s elements, is it any wonder why your nails are peeling and chipping while the texture and look of your hands feel like cardboard?
Reversing the Damage. Traditional nail care companies approach nail treatments with an old fashion, protein/moisture concept‐ apply a protein rich ingredient in the treatment and moisturize often usually with glycerine being the main ingredient. Always in search of new technologies to address the age‐old question of visual aging, Dermelect’s focus for nails is on Keratin‐ the essential protein found in fingernails, skin and also hair. Keratin diminishes as we age and expose our nails to everyday wear and tear. Dermelect is leading a new frontier in nail care by being the first United States company to introduce the use of peptides in the launch of it’s anti‐aging nail and hand treatments. now the results that peptide infused facial treatments provide. Well now that same principal has been expertly formulated to restore beauty and strength to natural nails. Whether you’re trying to treat damaged nails or maintain beautiful, natural, long nails, Dermelect’s treatments are the most advanced formulas available.
How Does It Work? New Zealand wool protein‐peptide biotechnology is the breakthrough ingredient in Dermelect’s nail care. It’s actually pretty simple. Keratin is very difficult to extract from wool without damaging the amino acids that make up the protein. Most processes mangle the amino acids, meaning that the potency suffers. The peptide ingredient that Dermelect utilizes is extracted from the wool in a gentle yet powerful process keeping the protein intact and therefore maintaining its potency without damaging the amino acids that make it up. The integrity of the extracted peptide (keratin protein) is in a near‐perfect state yielding unprecedented, age‐defying, strengthening and softening results for the nails and hands. Currently, this is as close as you can get to restoring the natural keratin found in healthy fingernails and skin! When it comes to nail care everyone has their own opinion about the “best” kind of manicure. While many go for acrylics, wraps, and the presently popular gel manicure, many salons and experts across the country are opting to do away with all the hoopla and instead revert back to basics‐ naturally beautiful nails. There are many reasons cited for the resurgence of natural nails, such as lower maintenance, but most notably the common thread is that going natural can address common nail ailments, especially as you age. With this intention in mind, Dermelect Cosmeceuticals’ peptide infused, nail treatments enable anyone to strip off the enhancements and go stunningly long and strong. All Dermelect nail, hand and foot treatments are: • dbp, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor & toluene FREE • Cruelty FREE ‐ No Animal Testing, Ever! • Hydroquinone FREE • Paraben FREE © 2015 Dermelect Cosmeceuticals http://dermelect.com/ J u n e 2 0 1 5 | 68

A Good Shave, It Is Achievable By Philip Masiello
SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME, MEN HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE ULTIMATE SHAVE TO IMPRESS WOMEN. A ND WOMEN HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE ULTIMATE SHAVE FOR REASONS OF COMFORT. So what is the best
way to achieve the perfect shave on any part of your body? The key is preparation, preparation, and preparation.. Getting a Close Shave The first, and most important step is to soak the hair with warm water. This allows the hair to soak up the moisture and expand. This expansion brings more of the hair to the surface allowing for a closer shave. Next, you need a great shave cream. The Ultimate Shave creams are great because they are not thick and heavy which don’t moisturize your skin and actually dull your razor. This product is designed to nourish the skin and not clog up your razor. Most people still shave with a foam shave cream out of an aerosol can and experience razor burn and don't know why. This type of aerosol shaving cream contains excess chemicals such as alcohol and numbing agents that can be very harmful to the skin and irritate it. Aerosol shave creams actually dry the skin, giving it a leathery appearance instead of hydrating and soothing the skin. These canned shave foams tend to contain more air than the shave cream itself. This affects the skin's ability to upwardly suspend the hair, resulting in razor burn after shaving and not getting a close or comfortable shave experience. It's no secret that the most decisive part of your being is your face. Dry, dehydrated, and rough skin will never be in fashion. With the overwhelming amount of aerosol shave creams and shave gels, it is easy to choose one and move on without considering the consequences. It is no wonder that 50% of women and 30% of men suffer from razor burn. This is where the best shave cream to give you the ultimate shave comes into play, providing a protective layer on the skin to avoid this discomfort. You definitely do not want to settle for anything less than perfection. J u n e 2 0 1 5 | 70

A Good Shave (Continued) Switching to shaving creams like Ultra Smooth Shaving Cream from 800razors.com will immediately enhance your shaving experience. This cream is made with a Peruvian flower complex that is clinically proven to reduce the burn after shaving by up to 80%. The difference lies in the closer contact between your razor and your skin. When smearing aerosol shave cream or shave foam on your face, you get an uneven lather that doesn't adequately penetrate the beard. With a true shave cream like ours, the shave cream actually sinks into the skin like a moisturizer and allows the whiskers to come out to the surface. The whiskers are softened by the brushing action allowing for a much closer shave. So here is a shout‐out to all those with sensitive skin out there: it's time for you to come out of that cocoon of unawareness and say good‐bye to aerosol shave cream. Enjoy the experience of pampering your face with the 800razors.comUltimate shave cream. Indulge in a product completely made the way you've always wanted your lubricant to be made—easy to use and with Zero Burn! The single biggest question we get asked every day by men and women is ‘How often should I change my razor blades’, and it is not so easy to answer. Why? For the simple reason that shaving is subjective. Not everyone shaves the same or has the same hair thickness or has the same shape or the same preferences. Many factors go into the cartridge life and that is why there is no single answer to the question. The key to determining when to change your razor blade is how you feel when your razor strokes your face. I can always tell, from the first swipe, that the blade needs changing. Usually about every 10 days. Some people can make their cartridges last 30 or more. But you need to start with a great razor blade to begin with. There is a difference between cheap razor blades and inexpensive razor blades for sure. Every man and woman wants a great shave, they are just tired of overpaying for it. But the key is quality. Just going overseas and importing a cheap razor blade is not the answer. Yes, they may be cheap enough to change your razors every few days, but that doesn’t solve the problem. You need to have a razor of the same quality as the industry leaders. That puts the experience on an even playing field. Then make it less expensive than the bigger brands and now you can get the same shave experience, at a lower cost and chose when you want to change your razor blades. Because the quality is just as good and the price is less, there is no need to try to stretch the life of your razor blade. You can change it whenever you want to.
