Life Image – 30 Day Fitness By Carolyn Bendall THIS MONTH’S LIFE IMAGE GOAL FOCUSES ON FITNESS. We challenge each of our readers to print out the following pages put together by Dave Gilbertson with 3 Elements Fitness out of Thousand Oaks CA, USA. A personal trainer, Gilbertson appeared on our radio show and talked about fitness and how to achieve success. So many of us get started and then don’t follow through. I wanted to put together a 30 day challenge that wasn’t so challenging that one would give up on following through. If you do something for 21 days, then it becomes a part of your day. That is how long it takes for a new habit to be formed. Join us on this 30 Day Challenge and watch our Facebook page to keep up with me as I go through this 30 Day Challenge myself. I have already found a place near our home to do the 30 minute walking. I need to get a jump rope, I will do that right away. This is a fitness challenge, with a nutritional challenge. Start by emptying out the things in your kitchen that just don’t belong. You know what they are, all the junk processed foods. Now, in some cases that box of macaroni and cheese is a matter of budgetary restraints. So, what we want you to get rid of right now are the sweets and chips and anything in between those two! You can do it!! And, no binging on them to get rid of them is NOT acceptable. Gilbertson gives some more guidelines for your nutritional needs. So, for the first part of the 30 Day Challenge for the nutrition, just get rid of the junk. We aren’t asking you to ditch all sugar and flour in the house; 99.9% of you won’t do that anyway. So, let’s take baby steps. Now, to replace those junk processed foods let’s add apples and oranges. For that salty taste you crave, peanut butter or pimento cheese on celery. You can make it through those two things, right? Now, set aside the time of day that you are doing to do the fitness challenge, and ‘Like’ us on Facebook so that you can watch our progress and others’ progress! https://www.facebook.com/yourtruecoloursmagazine

The 30 Day Challenge The reason 3 Elements Lifestyle created The 30 Day Challenge was to bring fitness to the next level for its members. Many times, a kickstart to one’s health is what it takes in order to see where they stand and what their possibilities are for improvement. Thirty days is not a long time when you think about it. It is four weeks, one month, or seven hundred-twenty hours. If that is how long it takes to change a life for the better, we figured why not change someone’s life...one day at a time. We are talking about ridiculous results here. This is not your typical lose five pounds in one week diet and exercise plan. The 30 Day Challenge was created to improve fitness and health at any level. In the Beginning Participants of The 30 Day Challenge arrive to 3 Elements Lifestyle excited. Day one is the day in which goals are set. 3 Elements Lifestyle team members take special care to appropriate measurements and conduct the body fat analysis of each 30 Day Challenger. Afterwards, 3 Elements Lifestyle gather 30 Day Challengers on the gym floor to test the ability levels with a series of exercises. 3 Elements Lifestyle developed six movements to measure an individual’s muscle balance or imbalance as a whole. Some people use upper body muscles more than lower body muscles in their everyday life and vice versa. The movements people use are to make us stronger in everyday life. The 30 Day Challenge exercises focus on a core set of movements utilizing upper body pushing and pulling, lower body pushing and pulling, core and lots of conditioning. Mastering core movements like these allows us to venture through our everyday life with less risk of injury while picking up our kids, carrying the groceries, lifting a 50 lb. bag of dog food from the trunk, and even hiking.

The Challenge Begins A 3 Elements Lifestyle trainer calls out to the 30 Day Challengers to gather round. The intensity in the gym begins to build. 30 Day Challengers have been measured, weighed in and analyzed. In hand, each 30 Day Challenger holds a manual for the thirty day journey. A 3 Elements Lifestyle trainer explains to the excited Challengers it is now time for warming up and then they will be partnered with someone in the group for the six exercises. The warm up and Challenge begins. As the trainer calls out different warm up exercises to the group of Challengers, the heat of the gym rises. The Challenge Is Set In Motion Now that each Challenger is ready to be put to the test, the trainer explains each of the six core tests. Each core test has three levels. STABILITY

STRENGTH

POWER

Stability Stability level is for beginners or Challengers who have injuries are new to working out or just a little nervous. Strength Strength level is for Challengers who have been working out regularly but still need some form correction and would like to improve even more. Power Power level is for serious athletes who really want to take there abilities to the NEXT level. Each Challenger takes turns cheering on their partner on the first day of the Challenge. A Challenger’s goal is to achieve a high a rep with each exercise. Once a Challenger has tested their ability level on each of the exercises, they set a goal for themselves for the end of the 30 Day Challenge.

Support Emails are sent out during The 30 Day Challenge to each Challenger. Manuals, self help videos and recipes are provided for the thirty day journey of ridiculous results. 30 Day Challengers are offered unlimited access to 3 Elements Lifestyle during The 30 Day Challenge. Do It!

Living The 30 Day Challenge Fitness It is important to exercise on a consistent basis. It is not necessary to repeat the same exercises from the first day of the Challenge. Change your exercise routine up each time. Doing so will keep your workouts exciting. Exercise for a minimum of an hour each time your workout. Ensure that you take the time to stretch and warm up in order to get your heart rate up during your workout. Nutrition Don’t try to complicate your diet. Eating is really simple and delicious. Look at food in four categories protein, veggies, carbs and fats. Calorie counting is not important. Keep your diet raw and simple. Do not consume processed foods. If you cannot pronounce it, do not eat it. Eat three proportionate meals a day and a snack in between each meal. How much should you eat? Look at your hand. The size of your palm including width equals one meal worth of protein. The size of your closed fist equals one meal worth of veggies. If your hand were cupped to gather water in it, that is equal to one portion of dense carbs. This means the amount of water you could hold in your cupped hand, not a heaping amount up to your finger tips. Your thumb is equal to one fat portion. Please visit our friends Precision Nutrition for a link with more assistance and information to the hand plan. Men and Women should be on a different diet.

t tac n Co ow! N Us

Men can calculate the following for each meal: 2 palms of protein 2 fists of vegetables 2 cupped hands of carbs 2 entire thumbs of fats Women can calculate the following for each meal: 1 palm of protein 1 fist of vegetables 1 cupped hand of carbs 1 entire thumb of fats

Change Your Life!

Recovery Exercise is important. Nutrition is important. Taking the time to rest and recover is very important. Keep on a regular workout schedule as well as taking the time to let your body rest in between. Don’t workout every day of the week. Give your body a day or two of rest. Resting does not mean being lazy. On the days you don’t workout, stay active with errands or a walk, keep moving. Allow yourself ample time to sleep as well. Recovery is an extremely important part of being healthy and fit. Have an amazing Challenge! Welcome to best 30 days of your life!

Wellness: What Do You Do in the Summertime? By Kally Efros WHEN I WAS A KID, I REMEMBER LOOKING FORWARD TO SUMMER WITH GREAT ANTICIPATION.

I HAD THREE MONTHS OF NO SCHOOL. I lived out in the country and summertime meant lazy days and lots of exploring. I rarely wore shoes. We climbed trees and ran in the ditches by the fields. We helped with the family garden, took family vacations, camped, enjoyed longer days, swam, slept out on the trampoline, built forts, ate homemade ice‐cream, went on picnics, watched fireworks, played baseball, and enjoyed all the adventures my young mind could imagine. I remember lying on the grass, the trampoline, or up in the treehouse watching the clouds go by and listening to the different sounds of the birds. It was a time to explore and get bored. But most important, it was a time to own my world – my back yard. I was the queen of my realm on some days and on others I was a pirate exploring the desert sea for adventure. Somewhere in those tween years and early teens, I grew up and had more responsibility. Summers got shorter and I found myself looking for summer jobs. At 18 years old just after graduating high school, I remember climbing the fort with my boyfriend saying goodbye to our childhood and contemplating the future. This summer would be different and our lives would be forever changed. We had graduated from high school. My boyfriend and I would be going our separate ways; different colleges and different paths. Suddenly, we felt as if we had to act as adults and be serious. Lately it seems that summers have gotten even shorter. The days seem to be busy with camps, activities and commitments. I find myself in August wondering where the long days of summer disappeared to. I don’t see my kids lazily exploring the adventures of our backyard. As a young mom, I didn’t want my kids to fall behind in school so I joined the ranks and got “summer workbook” school work for my future Einsteins to be busy with. Schools began giving reading assignments to be completed over the summer.

Your True Colours What does summer mean to you? Summer is an important time for both rest and play. It is just as important for your healthy mental state as it is for the children. There is a time and season for everything. Humans have historically lived according to the seasons. Living with nature and going with the flow of nature helps us to thrive. The fall is a time of gratitude, gathering the harvest and recognizing blessings. It is the season to finish the chores and transition to winter.

Winter is time to turn inward and slowdown. It is a good time to contemplate. It is a season of shorter days. It is also a time to celebrate and honor your heritage. Many cultures see winter as the season to clear out the clutter, especially as you approach the New Year. Winter is ruled by yin energy, which is restorative and restful. One should slow down, rest and relax. Spring is the awakening as we transition to the summer. In nature we see the earth waking up. It is time for new projects and ideas and the sowing of seeds. It is a good time to take stock of your physical health. Summer is the season in the northern hemisphere where the sun is the hottest and the days are the longest. It is a season of light, fun and a time to enjoy the outdoors. Summer is the fire element and is ruled by yang energy. It is a time to re‐connect to your passion. Yang energy is fiery, active energy. Summer is the time to get things done with all the extra energy the season brings. Allow yourself to be more active. Connect with the earth for grounding and balancing. It is natural for us to have a strong connection with the outdoors in summer and walk barefoot in the grass, or want to be near or in the water. This is how I naturally spent my childhood summers. Life felt more balanced back then. Balance the extra summer energy with more fluids. Eat lighter meals and enjoy the bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Have fun in the summer and find time to do some extra activities. Don’t over schedule boring work projects or if you have kids, don’t over book them either. Summer work projects are okay as long as they don’t overshadow fun. Studies show consistently that rest, relaxation and fun improve your health. So tap into your inner child and play. Even if you have a regular job, you can still take time to play by utilizing your weekends and the longer days.

Wellness: Summertime (Continued) Enjoy greater physical activity, especially activities you can enjoy outside like bike riding. Go to the beach or a lake if you can. Go camping and sleep under the stars. Find a new trail to hike. Play games with the family or with your friends. Read a new book. Tour your own region or city. You don’t always have to leave town to have a vacation. Pick up a new hobby or learn something new. Go on a picnic and play Frisbee or catch. Camp out in your own back yard. Roast marshmallows. Sit out on the porch and watch the world go by. Take a day off and just be lazy, many people have coined the phrase “staycation”. Turn your phone off and be on vacation in your own home. Let’s not forget about the value of a personal or family vacation. Whatever your budget, find a way to work in some time off. In our early days, camping was a wonderful inexpensive way to vacation. The family vacation is a great opportunity to make memories that last a lifetime and to explore the world around you. These days, families can be so scattered and busy with school, work, and friends that time together as a family gets pushed aside. The family vacation is a great time to reconnect and strengthen those bonds. Whether you stay home or go on a vacation, have fun and be active. Walk barefoot in the grass. It turns out that that is actually a very healthy activity. You’re not a kid anymore and you can explore the world, not just your back yard. Renew yourself this summer. Really enjoy your summer! Connect to the magic and energy of summer in many ways. You’ll be glad you did.

Safe Travel for Women Abroad By K. Paige Engle TRAVELING WORLDWIDE FOR BUSINESS OR PLEASURE IS INCREASINGLY POPULAR AMONG PROFESSIONAL WOMEN. EACH TRAVELER SHOULD KEEP THE FOLLOWING TIPS IN MIND: Research Your Destination Safety and security are crucial when traveling domestically and internationally, so researching your travel destination is key. Besides the location, it is important to be familiar with cultural attitudes towards women, especially women traveling alone. It may be necessary to secure a male traveling companion in some parts of the world. Hotel Awareness Be sure to pick a hotel in a safe neighborhood and/or near your meeting place or visiting office. I always pick a hotel based on the activities that I will be doing during my trip. Obtain essential hotel information and ask if they have a women‐only floor. I also pack a small rubber door stop in my suitcase. As a precaution, never reveal your hotel information (especially your room number); even to business contacts. Meet them in the hotel lobby or restaurant. Travel Documentation It is important to have all of your travel itinerary information printed and/or saved on your mobile device. Be sure to have a valid passport and /or visa for travel and keep a copy with you at all times or in the front desk hotel safe. Having a backup will make it significantly easier to replace if it is lost or stolen. Finances Always travel with a small amount of local currency and a credit or travel card if you are traveling internationally. Be sure to alert your banking institution of your travel itinerary and the countries you will be visiting. I have had the pleasure of being in Hong Kong and having my card denied because I did not inform them, and let me tell you, the long distance call to my local bank from Kowloon was not cheap. As a reminder never place all your valuables in one location, better yet, leave them at home. I always advise my clients to carry either a money belt, neck pouch, pocket scarf or pocketed camisole. These accessories make all the difference.

iSHARE Agency Spotlight: “The Mule” By Sherri Henley AT ISHARE AGENCY, MY FOUNDING PARTNER, CHERYL MALIK AND I ARE GRANTED THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH A VARIETY OF ENTREPRENEURS, BUSINESS OWNERS AND PROFESSIONALS. ONE OF THE STAND ‐ OUT ADVENTURISTS IS MELVIN MCCOY, A /K/A THE M ULE . Join me as I interview* iSHARE featured client, Melvin McCoy about his upcoming #MuleWalk… Sherri: Q: Melvin...Why are you called, "Melvin The Mule?” Melvin: A: Melvin The Mule is an easy way to associate the MULE and the man and is a social media friendly name, I hope! Sherri: Q: What inspired you to create "The Mule?" Melvin: A: On a visit to Oregon, I was invited on a hike and listened to a lady complain about her inability to carry hike loads anymore. After a brief discussion, I puzzled why, with the amount of people that hike, hunt and carry loads in the field, there wasn't some product to address this issue. From that trip, I started brainstorming and the rest is, well…you know…. Sherri: Q: Tell us about the capacity of "The Mule."

Melvin: A: The MULE allows a person, man or woman to double the amount of load in weight and volume that they can carry in the field. Sherri: Q: How many walks have you taken with The Mule, how long, when and where? Melvin: A: I walked from Newport Beach, California across the continental U.S. to Cape Henlopen, Delaware at the Atlantic Ocean in 1992‐93. It took 8 1/2 months of walking. Death Valley, California was 7 days and 6 nights of walking…I recently walked from South Houston, Texas to Baton Rouge, Louisiana which took 1 month in 2014. Sherri: Q: Are you walking for a cause, and if so...what is your cause? Melvin: A: My cause is twofold: 1. Raising awareness and support for Veteran's causes. 2. To launch our crowdsource fundraising Kickstarter campaign to begin production of the MULE for consumer use and purchase. Sherri: Q: How did you become an iSHARE Client and why? Melvin: A: I became an iSHARE Client by referral to raise awareness of the MULE online. Sherri: Q: How can someone give to your cause? Melvin: A: Donations will be accepted online once the #MuleWalk starts and the Kickstarter campaign goes live. Supporters can choose any of more than a dozen rewards ranging in price from $5 and up. Sherri: Q: Can someone buy "The Mule?” Melvin: A: Yes. Part of the Kickstarter rewards is preorders of the MULE from our initial production run. Some MULEs can be ordered in custom colors and part of numbered series. Sherri: Q: What is your long‐term goal for "The Mule?" Melvin: A: My long term goal for the MULE is the widespread introduction and use, worldwide of the product, especially in the third world. Natural and Fine By Karen Scott

HI, I’M NATURAL AND FINE. SOUNDS LIKE THE OPENING TO A TWENTY STEP PROGRAM.

THE REALITY IS, DEALING WITH FINE NATURAL HAIR IS A STEP BY STEP PROCESS. Motivation, because you have to be ready to do the work. Time, because there is no quick fix. Patience, because results don’t happen overnight. Re‐evaluation because not everything you try will work for your hair. Fine hair is a classification of texture which also includes medium and thick (coarse). Hair texture is defined by the individual strands. The diameter of the cuticle is the determining factor as to if the hair is thick (coarse), medium or fine. Now this is not to be confused with thin hair which refers to specifically to density. Although, both can have similar problems and vulnerabilities. Fine refers to the number of hairs per square inch. This outcome is usually but not always influenced genetically. A complete understanding of hair is much more detailed including other traits like curl pattern and porosity and don’t forget combination hair which is also common. For our purposes the focus is fine hair because it makes hair more vulnerable and difficult to style and from my experience maintain. To the left is a visual of hair strand texture: Fine hair is delicate and depending on your curl pattern can also be dry. This hair texture, believe it or not is quite common. Dealing with it can be a challenge without a proper maintenance program. Styling, managing and maintaining the health of fine strands is a learning experience. Okay now, let me clarify, I am not an expert. I am a work in progress. As I wrote in a previous reflection; Tight Curlz: A

Transitioning Love Story, “Hair care is a personal journey, an intimate relationship that is developed over time.” Frequently we get caught up in the “grass is greener on the other side” syndrome when it comes to hair. Don’t get me wrong. Its fine (laugh here). I’ll even add. It’s beautiful when we compliment each other. Then there is also the misconception about good hair. You know what I mean, so and so has good hair. I like remind myself what grandma always said, “All hair is good hair if it’s healthy.” So let’s make that our goal, healthy hair.

Some Common Challenges for Fine Hair: smaller diameter makes it weaker and lacking the kind of additional support of medium or thick (coarse) textures more vulnerable to the environment, harsh products and daily manipulation easily weighted down by products more prone to breakage lack of volume frequent frizz hard water can dry and damage strands difficult to style, limp and lacking body and bounce moisture is your friend and foe easily susceptible to chemical and heat damage stress I’m sure you have some challenges you’d like to add, but you get the point. So now that we have glanced at the dark side of fine hair…time to move toward the light. There are some aspects to caring for fine hair that provide a healthier outcome. Perhaps even improve your current hair dilemma. A commonly overlooked step, consulting a health care provider. When dealing with hair difficulties it’s important to rule out health issues. Genetics, vitamin and mineral deficiencies are a few things that may also contribute to changes in hair quality. For example, when getting blood work done, inquire about vitamin and mineral levels. In some cases even the slightest change can have an impact. Your levels may be in range and your hair may still react to the difference. It is also important that when you are making major changes to your diet or adding supplements you first discuss this with your health care provider. So what to do? Where to begin? Start a hair journal. Include enough information for a clear indication of what doesn’t work for you.

Natural and Fine (Continued) From the list below try one new thing at a time, determine if the impact is positive or negative and proceed accordingly.

Steps to healthier fine hair: ‐ Hydrate ‐ drink plenty water, it keeps hair and skin hydrated. Try giving your hair a spritz of H2O (water) before bed. Add moisture to the air with a humidifier. It may be a choice between hydrated hair or frizz, choose hydrated. ‐ Sleep ‐ Ditch the chemicals ‐ when you change the natural structure of your hair with stripping chemicals it becomes weak. A real deal breaker for fine hair. ‐ Eating a balanced diet makes your hair vibrant. ‐ Use Natural products on hair and skin ‐ Protein ‐ Yes, you need protein after all hair by definition hair is a protein filament that grows from the follicles. How much needs to be gauged by how your responds. ‐ Biotin ‐ is thought to strengthen hair shaft adding additional protection for fine hair and absorbs stress. ‐ Shampoo only when necessary, try co‐washing to remove debris and condition the hair. When using a shampoo make sure it is natural and gentle and doesn’t strip the hair of its natural oils. Dry hair leads to breakage.

Herbs cleanse the scalp, stimulate circulation, nourish and strengthen the hair follicles. They are beneficial for all hair types especially fine hair. They can be included in a diet as well as a nourishing hair rinse. Also look for them in the products you use for your hair. Consider Nettle, Basil, Rosemary, Lavender, and Horsetail.

Mucilage: is also found in herbs, it adds conditioning and slip; detangling properties that aids in the manageability that fine hair needs.

• • • ‐ ‐

Flax seeds Chia seeds Slippery elm

Frigid or cold rinse ‐ seals in moisture, add shine, reduces frizz, smooths and protect strands Light Natural oils and Butters applied to damp hair nourishes and locks in moisture. Argan, camellia, jojoba, sweet almond oils work well. As for butters Tress Dress is both light and nourishing.

Handling hair use care to avoid tangles and breakage. Embrace protective hair styles. Minimum manipulation is key. Comb hair from ends to roots to avoid tangles and knots. Refrain from using brushes. Fine Tune as necessary… changes in life cycle and keeping healthy hair involves periodic fine tuning to maintain a healthy balance.

This next point may make you pause and call me luny, because I am. Incorporating the lunar cycle into your hair routine might be something you want to try. Why, because it works, it does for me. Faster growing and thicker hair by the lunar calendar is something that has been used for centuries. My favorites to check are Farmers Almanac and the OM Journal. These are some things I learned along my continuing hair journey. My hair is healthy, dense, Natural and Fine!

Post Partum Care with Lavender Essential Oil By Cari Carraway I FOUND SOME INTERESTING RESEARCH THAT DISCUSSED HOW DURING THE POST PARTUM PERIOD LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL MAY BENEFIT AND SOOTHE THE NEW MOMMY . B EFORE I START THIS NOT SO PLEASANT SUBJECT OF EPISIOTOMY CARE I WANTED TO MENTION THAT I GET ASKED ALL THE TIME IF ESSENTIAL Image courtesy of David Castillo Dominici at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

OILS ARE SAFE FOR PREGNANCY AND

CHILDREN. I always refer everyone back to their healthcare provider, nurse midwife, or obstetrician so

they can discuss alternative options, if someone is looking for a natural and alternative treatment. I was recently researching essential oils on pubmed and came across a research article that took a look at support with lavender essential oil, after a very common procedure is done during delivery, which is called an episiotomy. An episiotomy is where, an incision is made in the perineal wall to help ease the delivery of the newborn so that the mother’s perineum does not tear during the forceful pushing and delivery. I had three of these, with each of my deliveries. OUCH! I was thankful to not tear, but were these ever tender and sore for about 7‐10 days. Typically you are given ice packs and OTC pads which have witch hazel and lots of other chemicals to help ease the discomfort, along with numbing spray. I didn’t start using essential oils until after my 3rd son was born so I wasn’t able to try what this article suggested but I found it very interesting and wanted to share this information with you. You can find the research article that discusses healing advantages after an episiotomy with lavender essential oil here.

This is the abstract from PubMed: Episiotomy is the most common perineal incision in obstetric and midwifery. Nowadays alternative and complementary methods such as Aromatherapy using essential oils are established as an alternative therapy. This research was carried out to assess the effect of lavender oil in wound healing. This randomized control trial was conducted on 120 primiparous women with singleton pregnancy, without any acute and chronic disease and allergy who had undergone normal spontaneous vaginal delivery and episiotomy. They were randomly allocated in case and control groups. Case group received lavender oil and controls received povidoneiodine. Incision sites were assessed on the 10th day postpartum. 25 out of 60 women in lavender group and 17 mothers in control group had no pain (p = 0.06). There was no significant difference between two groups in surgery site complications. However, redness in lavender group was significantly less than controls (p < 0.001). This study suggests application of lavender essential oil instead of povidone‐iodine for episiotomy wound care.

Soothing Naturally Using lavender essential oil in the post‐ partum period may be a great option for this temporary issue. It got me thinking that it would have been nice to have a more natural way to help ease this discomfort when I went through this. I currently use a spray bottle with essential oils for lots of things around my house for the people in my house. What if you added some organic witch hazel along with organic aloe vera (both known for their soothing properties) and some Young Living lavender essential oil

(because this is my preferred brand)? You could then use this natural version in place of the other OTC treatments most post‐partum momma’s are given to help ease this discomfort of an episiotomy during the healing period?

Post Partum Soothing Spray Start with an 8 oz. glass spray bottle and add: 2 oz. Purified Water 3 oz. Witch Hazel 1‐ 1/2 oz. Aloe Vera Gel 10 drops Young Living Lavender Essential Oil Spray on perineum as needed or after voiding.

Post Partum Cooling Pack Did you ever use an ice pack after delivery? Icepacks can of course help numb and reduce swelling to the perineal area and for me and were very comforting. You could prepare ahead of time, an essential oil infused cooling pack for when you return home. Use the same recipe as the “soothing spray” and pour over an infant diaper, place in a freezer bag and freeze. Apply as needed. Brrrrr, but Aaaah all at the same time. I’m guessing the above recipe would make maybe 4 or 5 cooling packs.

Whenyou try this, I would love to hear how it works! Wishing you a more comfortable recovery after your little one arrives. The Flip Side of Temperature Control – Heatsheets and Warm Weather Events By Chris Falk You’ve trained hard for months, why surrender all that effort to a preventable injury? Wherever the barometer lies, the management of body temperature is a crucial piece of endurance event safety that all participants – and even spectators – should keep in mind. You’ve already put so much time and energy into preparing your body, don’t risk your health on the big day on a problem so easily solved. Heatsheets’s products strive to protect the human body from temperature‐related injuries and while we’re typically front‐of‐mind when it comes to post‐race warming solutions, Heatsheets have also been demonstrated to be effective as a post‐race cooling tool for warm weather events. After miles of physical exertion, the sudden stop can lead to a rapid bodily cool‐down that, depending on the weather, can lead to dangerous and even hypothermic conditions. But in warm weather races, runners also struggle to find relief from the heat after crossing the finish line. The risk of dehydration and heat stroke, a condition that kills over 650 Americans annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), is high. In the excitement of a race’s last few miles when participants are stretched to their physical limits and focused on the finish line, racers are in danger of mistaking the early signs of heat stroke for regular exhaustion. The typical lightheadedness and muscle

cramps of this heat‐related injury can easily be dismissed as the effects of endurance running, whether a full marathon or just a few miles. This makes post‐race self care as important in warm weather events as in cold. For the most recent example of the havoc heat can wreak on the human body when it comes to endurance events, look to the 30th Annual L.A. Marathon on March 15 of this year. While L.A. is usually warmer than most places, this year’s race day saw record highs over 90 degrees, well above a typical balmy California spring Sunday. When the forecast began to climb as the weekend drew closer, the L.A. Marathon bumped the start time up by half an hour to let runners cover as much ground as they could before high noon. Heatsheets sent reminders to race officials that the blankets can be flipped to deflect some body heat as well as a social media blast to inform racers of Heatsheets’s dual use. Despite all that, the unseasonably high temperatures still took their toll on several runners, demonstrating just why most races aren’t held in the middle of summer. When most people think of Heatsheets, they think of runners using Heatsheets blankets to stay warm after a race. But when reversed – shiny side out – they are effective tools for deflecting sunlight to allow the body to cool more rapidly post‐race. And under our starting line campaign, Heatsheets capes and blankets can be effective to keep runners from overheating before exertion even commences in the starting corral. All athletes, from the serious to the amateur, should always take care to prevent injury. Temperature‐related conditions from dehydration to heat stroke to hypothermia are among the most easily‐prevented so take care this summer to keep cool and listen to your body when it comes to performing outdoors.

Sock of the Month Club? Alec Schidlovsky was becoming bored with the professional look that came with the professional career after college. He sought to find a way to express himself without taking away from the business style. Stylish socks came to his mind. Jerry Lewis told Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show many years ago that his goal for success was when he wore socks only once. As Carson questioned this particular goal, Lewis clarified that there were so many ways to be wasteful once success comes one’s way. So, he chose something that he could do relatively inexpensively. He wears his socks once, and he is done with them. (Socks worn only once could easily be donated to homeless shelters, without worn out holes.) Schidlovsky has a similar plan. Noting that socks can be expensive, usually starting at $15 a pair, he wanted to set up a plan that was financially enticing and time and effort saving. Once a month, every month, The Sock Society will release a new collection of exclusive socks. When you register for The Sock Society, you gain access to this new members only selection. You log onto your account and choose your selections; if that is too much effort, then The Sock Society will choose for you. Melatonin is the hormone that controls daily day-night cycles of sleep. Some sleep disorders, such as insomnia and Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS), are attributed to low melatonin levels. Travelers suffering from jet lag and swing shift workers may also benefit from supplemented melatonin. As we age our bodies do not make sufficient melatonin. Sleep enhancement is possible in healthy people as well with additional melatonin that may: * Decrease the time needed to fall asleep; * Increase sleepiness; * Increase sleep duration. Each measured dose of Maxasorb Melatonin lotion from our airless dispenser delivers 3 milligrams of melatonin with a full press of the pump. Just before bedtime, rub the easily absorbed, odorless lotion on your arms or legs. For travelers trying to ease the effects of jet lag, apply Maxasorb™ Melatonin lotion the day of travel close to the target bedtime at your destination. This will aid in falling asleep faster, improves alertness during the day, and reduces daytime fatigue. Use the product throughout the trip and for a week after return to help your body readjust its natural sleep cycle. Natural ingredients assure this lotion is gentle to your skin.

Making a Difference in India VRITTI PASRICHA IS BUILDING A BUSINESS IN INDIA THAT IS ECOLOGICALLY FORWARD AND BUILDS INCOME FOR WOMEN WHO FIND IT DIFFICULT TO WORK ALL DAY IN A FACTORY AND HAVE THEIR CHILDREN TENDED DURING THE LONG WORK DAY. Vritti Designs consists of

various textiles and non‐textiles products under Dhaani (textiles and ready to wear clothing for men, women, and children), Potli (various facets of India and traditional Indian art in form of handicrafts), and Ida (a wide range of certified organic products‐ Cereals, Pulses, Baby Food, Spices, Snacks, Dry Fruits and Ready to eat products). In her factory in Mumbai, India, Pasricha directs the various artisans that work on her projects. For her scarves alone she uses block printing, hand dying, Ajrakh Print, digital print, and hand weaving. For that variety of methods, she utilizes the best in each field which then requires that her scarves are sent to various parts of India for completion. Pasricha worked in the garment corporate sector and in the factories. She realized that many chemicals are used in the process of making garments; and each chemical affects human being health and the environment. So, in May 2012, she decided that she would do her own part by bringing organic and/or eco‐ friendly practices in this industry within India. Taking the extra step to support handloom weavers and other artisans for their own livelihood and the

result also supports Indian artisan heritages. Her fabrics that utilize the organic and eco‐friendly methods include Khadi fabric (Cloth that is primarily woven from Hemp and may also include silk, or wool, which are all spun into yarn on a spinning wheel called a charkha.), handspun yarn, weaving done by hand, nettle from the Himalayan range. The artisans work individually, and then return the finished project. In some cases, the item may then go to another artisan to apply the next step. As in the case of a hand woven fabric that then has hand sewn embroidery work applied. There are some projects that require a machine, digital prints on modal or wool; which are then sewn by women who are experts in that art.

Your True Colours - Transformations

THE NETWORKING GROUP, TALK SHOPPE, HELD IN MEMPHIS TN, HELD A MONTH LONG ONCE A WEEK SEMINAR ON THE HOW TO’S FOR SEEKING A JOB. One of the classes

was on image. Two students from The University of Pheonix were chosen to receive a makeover. Lisa McGhee, who is striving to be in business administration needed color in her look. Marva Ballard, designer for MG Ballard Designs, outfitted McGhee in a tunic and pencil skirt with a ruana wrap in a burnt orange to complement her Warm Tawny skin tone. Multiple necklaces and a coordinating wrist cuff from Permier Jewelry completed the wardrobe fix. McGhee’s skin is flawless and she wears very little makeup, Carolyn Bendall, makeup artist used Your True Colours lipstick in Playful (a copper brown) to give her lips a hint of color. Kosandra Weaver, hairstylist at Gould’s Spa and Salon in Collierville TN, treated McGhee to subtle highlights in her dark brown hair to add dimension. She then used a flat iron to create very tight curls that would hold a few days with hair spray. Weaver also waxed McGhee’s brows creating an open eye and a more polished look.

David Loggins, who is preparing to enter the real estate field, needed a more business‐like image. Carolyn Bendall, Image Consultant, took him to Jos. A. Bank (Oak Court in Memphis TN), to create an easy to care for look. To truly spotlight his Cool Violet skin tone, Bendall chose a blue plaid tailored‐fit wool sportcoat. A fine line purple Traveler spread color shirt with a Signature paisley tie. For the flair of fashion a navy blue vest and a silk pocket square was added to the ensemble. Simple black Traveler plain front khaki’s in black. Bendall showed a Traveler button down collar shirt that would match the jacket; and a golf polo shirt that could be worn for a more casual look.

Cool Skin Tones

Hair color is just as important when in relation to one’s skin tone as makeup and clothes. Cool Blondes, Cool Brunettes, and Cool Reds can all be highlighted with warmer colors, but the overall color should always be warm. Hair Color by Ted Cortese http://www.divacolourstudio.com

Warm Skin Tones Warm skin tones have a bit more difficult time with adding cool highlights. For warm blondes it may look like gray. It takes a skilled colorist to know how to balance the base color and highlight color when mixing warm and cool. Warm Tawny’s do not have a ‘blonde’ on their chart (in layman’s terms). Your True Colours Reviews: Trendage What a fun new website! Want to see what the outfit will look like before you purchase it? Trendage allows the customer to go through various styles and put together the complete outfit. The outfit to the right is the one that I put together. You can purchase the outfit from the website, taking you to the stores that each piece originated. Your total is presented after you are finished with the outfit. The only drawback that I saw was that this was the only model, but they are just getting started and it is a fun way to shop on line. Their choices are limited at this time, too. Men can also make their own choices, with a male model.

From Concept to Garment: Theresa Onwuka NEEDLE POINT SHOP IS A LIFESTYLE BRAND CONCEIVED BY THERESA ONWUKA. IT IS DEFINED BY HER LOVE FOR AFRICAN CULTURE AND F ASHION . Onwuka focuses in the creation of contemporary ready‐to‐wear clothes in African print, distinguished by the use of high quality prints and embellishments to create timeless pieces that transcend seasons. She caters to the personal style needs of her clientele of varied ages, who seek to be effortlessly stylish, elegant and comfortable in their clothes. Founded as a hobby in 2006, Onwuka relaunched Needle Point in 2010 with the opening of its flagship store in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria. Onwuka’s passion is making women look amazing in her timeless pieces. According to her, "It's all about adding that touch of effortless chic to every piece." Onwuka is quite spiritual and feels inspired by God with the ideas that flow through her creative prowess. Prayer brings her closer to the inspirations that are around her in nature and man. She begins by imagining the new creation in her mind. For the Cruise 2014 line she had wanted to include linen, and took that to the images in her mind. The next step is to put that image onto paper, to be turned over to the in‐house pattern‐maker. The sample is then created in her size. As she wears the garment she notices whether there are some slight changes that may need to be created, working closely with her pattern‐maker during this step is key for making sure the structure of the garment will make the possibilities come to life. The corrections are made, and the sample adjusted; then another evaluation of the piece. When Onwuka is completely pleased and the pattern‐maker agrees with the viability of structure of the garment the pattern is created. Fabric choices for the collection is then determined. Followed by the printing on the fabric and final details involved. The production phase is carried out in Onwuka’s own factory that has increased from a staff of 3 in 2011, to a staff of 13 going into the 2015 seasons. M a y 2 0 1 5 | 77

The model is chosen after the collection is finished. She has to fit the story/look of the collection. When the runway models are chosen, the same criteria is applied because Onwuka feels that the model’s personality must come out on the stage and in the photos through the garments. The garment then works in tandem with the model to relay the real look and feel of the line. Every line has a trait that sets them apart from the others within the market, and NeedlePoint is no different. Onwuka consistently uses Ankara (block African print) that is usually embellished with beads, semi‐precious stones, and crystals. The beadwork is manually done with time spent on a piece ranging from 5 to 40 hours. The pieces are timeless and will keep the wearer in style for years to come.

DIY Skirt: Walking on Sunshine! By Katie Rustin

WHEN I WOKE UP THIS ONE PARTICULAR MORNING, IT WAS RAINING, OVERCAST AND JUST GROSS OUT . I had plans to make Superman capes with Little Buddy and have a fun adventure outside. Guess that wasn’t going to happen... At about 3, I walked outside and it was absolutely beautiful. My yellow flowers were wide open and happily soaking up some sunshine. I ran inside to find something to remake. Something yellow, something yellow, something yellow… I settled on this men's yellow shirt. It is made of cotton with a little bit of texture. I knew I wanted to make a skirt so I chopped off the top of the shirt.

M a y 2 0 1 5 | 89

Your True Colours

And then sewed the flaps on the bottom together.

I sewed over the raw edge at the top.

M a y 2 0 1 5 | 90

Vol. Issue

When I cut the shirt, it wasn't a straight line. You have to make a straight line or the skirt will pucker weird on the side. You really need to make a line from the top to almost the bottom. I didn't and it was weird puckering so I had to go back and change

I pinned this skirt about 6 different ways because I couldn't figure out what to do. Do I want pleats? Do I want an elastic waist??? I'll try elastic? I grabbed this 10cent roll of elastic that I purchased at a Church Yard Sale forever ago. *Church Yard Sales are my favorite because they always have TONS of craft/sewing supplies and they are always very well priced. The people are generally really nice too

Your True Colours

Your True Colours

Vol. Issue

Instead of putting the elastic at the top, I offset it. This will give the waist band a ruffled look. *Hopefully*

I always pin in halves. Pin the middle of the front. Then the sides, then the middle in‐betweens. When sewing with elastic, be patient.

The yellow and white flowers still look so pretty so I paired this yellow ruffle skirt with a white top. To see more Do It Yourself projects from garage sale finds go to http://www.duckinyellow.com

Aromatherapy for Beauty By Marta Raptis

BEAUTY IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP. WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK, HOW YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY AND HOW YOU CLEANSE YOUR SKIN ALL AFFECT YOUR GENERAL WELL BEING . To ensure that you face the world looking as good as possible might mean examining what you eat and making changes to help your skin from within. This means drinking lots of water, herbal teas, eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Eliminating or reducing salt, alcohol, fried foods, red meat and sugars will also help the skin retain its natural glow. It's also vital to get plenty of fresh air and sufficient exercise, avoid smoking and reduce stress to aid in having healthy, beautiful skin. Once your skin care has been tackled from the inside, it's time to consider how essential oils can be used to improve complexion and help with specific skin conditions. Essential oils have been used for beauty purposes for centuries. Scientific research has shown that certain essential oils, such as rose, neroli, lavender and frankincense, stimulate the regeneration of healthy new skin cells. Some essential oils are rejuvenating to the skin, restore vitality and regulate capillary activity. Therefore, it is worthwhile to incorporate them into your skin care routine.

Your True Colours So which essential oils are beneficial for your skin type?

Normal skin ‐ If you have more or less normal skin, you can use almost any essential oils in your skin care products. Although you might want to avoid the spice oils as they may cause you skin irritation. Some recommended oils for you include: chamomile, rose otto, rose absolute, lavender, geranium, neroli, rosewood and palmarosa. Dry and sensitive skin ‐ If you suffer from dry and sensitive skin, the best essential oils for you to use in your skin care products are: geranium, rose geranium, rose, sandalwood, chamomile, neroli, ylang ylang, palmarosa and patchouli. Oily and combination skin ‐ If you're looking to balance your oil and/or combination skin, look for these essential oils in your products: lemon, bergamot, juniper, lime, geranium, cypress, rose geranium, mandarin, orange, sandalwood, neroli, cedarwood and lavender. Mature skin ‐ Mature skin can benefit from essential oils such as: rose, neroli, frankincense, myrrh, patchouli, lavender, palmarosa, geranium, rose geranium and sandalwood. Eczema or dermatitis ‐ If you suffer from these skin conditions, you might want to look for these essential oils in your skin care: bergamot, cedarwood, geranium, lavender, chamomile and sandalwood. So when you're looking for new skin care products to add to your daily routine, try to find ones with some of the essential oils mentioned above according to your skin type and you will have the added benefit of aromatherapy when you cleanse, exfoliate or moisturize. Make sure the products specify that actual essential oils are used as the synthetic fragrances do not provide any aromatherapy benefits at all.

The Summer of 1968: A Cultural Look at Fashion and Jewelry By Melinda Lewis

THE SIXTIES MAY CONJURE UP IMAGES OF THE HAIGHT-ASHBURY, HIPPIES, ROCK & ROLL AND FLOWER POWER, BUT BOTH FASHION AND JEWELRY WERE MORE THAN AN EXPRESSION OF TUNING IN, TURNING ON , AND DROPPING OUT — AND FAR MORE THAN JUST HIPPIE BEADS, HEADBANDS AND AFGHANI FASHIONS . IN FACT , THE ACTUAL HIPPIE MOVEMENT INVOLVED A SMALL FRACTION OF FOLKS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY . UNREST In 1968, the country had experienced the terrible loss of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. The civil rights movement was in full force. Protests, such as that held by the “Yippie” movement, in August of ’68 (during the Chicago Democratic National Convention), shocked the nation. These events challenged the moral fabric of the country and were far from the 1967 peaceful ideals shared during the “summer of love.” A SEARCH FOR NOSTALGIA In the midst of chaos covered by the media, fashion quietly turned to nostalgic inspiration for clothing and adornment. The mini‐skirt faded in popularity as skirt lengths fell, and the maxi‐skirt, similar in length to that during the Edwardian period came into fashion. A longing for romanticism was expressed by Victorian lace, Edwardian silhouettes, and big hats. Exoticism was explored by Eastern and Indian influences and a desire to reconnect to the country’s roots was reflected in the jewelry and fashion with elements borrowed from the Native American culture and the Wild West. Even 1920s nostalgia was given a name with the “Deco” revival movement spurred by the publication of historian Bevis Hillier first book on the subject: Art Deco of the '20s and '30s. THE FASHION SILHOUETTE Chain and pendant 1968, by The fashion silhouette varied as the 1960s represented a time of self‐ Napier ‐‐Swarovski's "Designer of the Year" award. expression. The late 1960s did adopt elements of the counter‐culture style, the mini still had its presence, but fashion also offered an abundance choices. The paradigm to be self‐expressive by defining individual style was omnipresent. Loungewear, Turkish pajamas, Napoleonic collars, jumpsuits, tunics worn as dresses or tops, were just some of the fashion styles present during 1968. Women’s fashions ranged from extremely feminine to decidedly sharp and angular. The miniskirt most known for the sixties

Your True Colours Summer of 1968 (Continued) plummeted as styles took a more romantic nature. By 1968, Paris dominated the fashion scene in styles ranging from “Napoleon styles (a transitional period of self‐expression), Edwardian delicacy, to “Moroccan” chic according to style experts.

Mosaic plaids became a staple for most American women in rich color tones Pre‐Inca costume ring, c. accented by long pendant necklaces 1968‐1969 by Napier such as those created by Accessocraft. featured in Vogue. Floral coat dresses were accented with Rhinestone Cocktail Ring, c. 1960s by Napier large geometric earrings and wrap dresses in faux suede displayed an abundance of fringe. Where a ruffled blouse covered the neck and chest‐‐earrings and large rings dominated the accessorizing. Delicate crepes called for large dramatic earrings against sleek hair. The iconic set by Trifari called L’Orient made its way to complement the fashions of the East. JEWELRY TRENDS 1968 was the year of the bracelet, followed by giant earrings and fantasy necklaces. Multi layers of golden chain bracelets, some adorned with babbles, were a go‐to‐fashion accessory. Coro and Monet, in particular, filled the fashion editorials with thick linked accessories, and proponents of the Napoleonic fashions favored chain bracelets as the perfect accessory. Plastic jewelry was still popular when worn with mod paisley prints such as those made by Sant’ Angelo displaying a laminated three‐ dimensional design or a simple single‐layer design incorporated into a large hard resin cuff. However, the background pallet for plastics was not always a spectrum of color to sport a large fabulous piece; as exampled by a simple, clear Hattie Carnegie “armband” in an early 1968 fashion editorial. Over‐sized bauble‐style earrings and bracelets in mixed‐metal tones by Robert Originals made a fashion statement and reflected

a new trend of using two to three metal colors in a jewelry design. Napier introduced tri‐colored pieces into its line featuring metal chains plated with rhodium,

Some of the most exciting sculptural designs for 1968 were those by Isreali designer Giora Novak and Italian‐born Giorgio Sant’ Angelo. Both used aluminum in new ways. Novak designed highly polished futuristic pieces, and Sant’ Angelo’s jewelry embodied an old‐world hand wrought appearance.

Summer of 1968 (Continued) Hair designs moved away from big hair and hair pieces to a cleaner silhouette while occasionally allowing the wild hair of former years should the fashions call for it. This sleeker, kempt look allowed for large fantasy earrings to embolden the frame of the face. Fantasy necklaces by such jewelry icons Stanley Hagler, Gripoix, and Kenneth J. Lane made a lasting impression and are greatly sought after by collectors today. However, when the fashion called for a necklace, long chains or chains and pendants were commonplace. In summary, 1968 was a year of reflection, romance and the beginning a transition. The country was ripe for change, peace and romantic nostalgia and fashion started to pave the way toward a new era.. Melinda L. Lewis is the author of The Napier Co.: Defining 20th Century American Costume Jewelry, Life By Design Publishing, 2013. As a jewelry historian, she has been involved with the online vintage costume jewelry community for the last 14 years, with a focus on The Napier Co. over the past 11 Original Fantasy Rhinestone years. http://www.vintagejewelrycollect.com Necklace, c.1960s by Napier

Chris Hill: A Blend of Country and Rock, with Some Memphis Blues By Carolyn Bendall Photos Provided by Chris Hill CHRIS HILL IS SON OF A MUSICIAN, AND GREW UP IN MEMPHIS AROUND MUSIC. Hill is 28 years old, owner of his own remodeling company, and carries the title of musician. Sports dominated his young mind until at the ripe old age of 12 a band at church needed a bass player. Hill was self‐taught on the bass guitar, so he joined the Praise Band; playing bass and singing backup. By age 16 he had mastered the guitar, too, and was now the lead singer of a rock band. This band took him to restaurants and bowling alleys. And, prepared him for his own band at age 18, Page 13. Where he now was writing his own songs. Page

13 covered songs, and played Hill’s original songs, which landed them the opportunity of a lifetime, a spot on MTV’s Spring Break special in Cancun Mexico. Following his Father’s advice, “Don’t put music out until you have something you are really proud of,” Hill maintained his standards within the rock band. No cussing in the songs, and uplifting subjects led him to bigger opportunities. His style developed with a bit of contemporary rock melded with Christian rock, and hint of Memphis blues. “I write music because I want it to relate to everyone,” Hill says about his writing style. Staying true to the ‘no cussing’ he writes touching love songs now. His CD that he waited on putting together because of his Father’s advice, is named A True Story, because that is what it is…his true story through song. When asked about the single that would be released from the CD, he confessed he turned to social media to make that decision. Asking his Facebook followers what their favorite song was on the CD that should be released proved fruitless. Each person listed several songs rather than just one, leading to a tie for several songs. So, he is still contemplating which song will be the release! He has just traveled to Nashville for a concert there, and has a trip to New York City planned, with more cities coming. He has already booked a 5 city Festival Tour in the summer. That remodeling company that was his main source of income has now turned him into a contractor where he contracts out the work that needs to get done. Definitely a sign that his music career will soon be his main source of income, following in the footsteps of his father. Connect with Chris Hill on Facebook.

Through explorations of her own past and present tense, Marie reflects on how the sum of her trials and triumphs shaped her into the empowered woman she became during her incessant quest to find her “yes.” ... http://frombarefoottostilettos.com/
