From the Editor’s Desk

Here in the South, we are having a grand ol’ football season, from our Mississippi schools, to Alabama, and to the one maybe some of you don’t know, University of Memphis. Their basketball team makes headlines, their football team, not so much. So, when our Tigers became Bowl Eligible, we joined forces united in our Tiger Blue! This month we are focusing on cruises! Ever wondered why the stores put out bathing suits and summer clothes sometimes in the dead of winter? A cruel joke? No, it is cruise season. We have cruise clothing, cruise and resort information, eating healthy on that eternal cruise buffet and cruise jewelry. It is the end of the year, and so we are looking forward to New Year’s Eve, too. We have beautiful dresses and styling of those dresses by Nai. It is a must to browse through! Our book review is being postponed a month, but it is coming!! We have another new idea in the works, so make sure you come back next month! Thanks! Carolyn Bendall

Life Image: Family Traditions By Carolyn Bendall

CREATING FAMILY TRADITIONS STRENGTHENS FAMILY TIES. CHILDREN THRIVE ON THOSE THINGS THAT THEY CAN EXPECT TO HAPPEN, WHETHER IT IS EACH WEEK, EACH MONTH, OR EVEN ONCE A YEAR. While

we were living in Southern California we decided to camp out on New Year’s Eve on Colorado Blvd., in Pasadena CA. Jomphong Grandma came to visit specifically to spend the night out on the street with us. The kids had so much fun sleeping on the street in anticipation of the Tournament of Roses Parade the next morning that we decided to go a second year. When the third New Year’s Eve rolled around our oldest was now old enough to go the New Year’s Eve Dance at Church, she didn’t want to miss that big milestone in her life. The other two kids argued their point on why we HAD to go, “It’s a tradition!” Two years, and it is a tradition. Yes, it means that much to children. It gives them stability. We started doing pizza and rent a movie on Friday nights when our children were young, mostly because we just couldn’t afford to go to the movies that they wanted to see so desperately. We thought it would last until they were teen-agers and then it wouldn’t be cool to hang out with Mom and Dad on a Friday night. We were wrong. This tradition followed them when they moved away to go to college. They still had Friday night pizza and movie night. Setting aside one night a week to be with your children, giving them your full attention, can make such a difference in their lives that when we promoted Family Night in our city the public school system got behind us and teachers volunteered to ‘teach’ the seminar to the parents. “I can tell which children spend even one night a week with their parents’ full attention. The discipline for on task for that child is above others in the classroom.” The teachers also noted that it was the same for behavior, the child that spent time with their parents’ undivided attention given to them were not the behavior problems in the classroom. The police department even stood with us, offering the precincts throughout the city to hold the seminars, free of charge. The police director at that time gave his reason for being completely on board with a Family Night, “Families are the answer to juvenile crime, not programs.” So, how does on go about with Family Night? First, choose a night of the week that the family will all agree that they will not schedule any other activities. Monday nights are usually good for most families. Decide what you will do for your family night. Make assignments for each person to do, even the 2 year old (who obviously will need help). The children will remind you after only one week of this new family tradition.

Preparing Millennials for a Professional Appearance By Amy Ware

“HE WORE WHAT TO HIS INTERVIEW?” THIS WAS MY

RESPONSE TO A RECRUITER UPON HEARING THAT THE STUDENT, WHOM I RECOMMENDED FOR THE JOB IN WHICH HE WAS INTERVIEWING FOR, WORE A HIGHLY WRINKLED SHIRT TO HIS INTERVIEW . After my shock subsided, I

managed to track down the student in order to provide him with some feedback. Upon asking “Do you feel that you were dressed professionally for the interview?” The soon to be graduate stated, “Of course; I wore a shirt with buttons.”

stockimages

Though this case is a bit extreme, it does reflect the casual nature of our Millennial generation. From nose rings to flip flops, their relaxed way of life is reflected not only in their clothing but also in their communication style. I can’t count the number of emails I receive that begin with “Hi!”

However, this generation also brings with it strong team-oriented and civic-minded achievers. Millennials believe that they have the potential to be great, and they probably do. They just need some guidance along the way in terms of how to present themselves professionally. So, what can we do to polish them up, and prepare them to present a professional image? Answer: a lot. First, we must actually provide this generation with honest, realistic feedback on their appearance. Remember, with this generation, everyone got a trophy. Therefore, they are not accustomed to not

D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 4 | 13

stockimages

Your True Colours

receiving positive feedback and praise, much less receiving constructive criticism. However, in an effort to prepare this generation to succeed as professionals, we must break it down for them. “Sandy, it’s time to take out the nose ring.” “John, I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to wear socks.” “Lucy, though your skirt is very fashionable, and might be exactly what you see your favorite actress wear on Law and Order, it is not appropriate for the work place.”

Ambro

In addition to having honest conversations, it is important for educators to provide opportunities for this generation to learn about professional attire through workshops, meetings, and special events that focus on professional etiquette for interviewing, networking, and in the work place. Programs that provide Millennials with real world examples of “do’s” and “don’ts” that they can relate to will assist them in grasping the fact that they must change their attitude on “business casual.” Also, it is important to address the need for a suit during any job search or interviewing workshop. And, be sure to tell them to iron their shirt!

Challenge Yourself, An App For You

YOU’VE BEEN THERE, YOU DOWNLOAD THE APP THAT COUNTS YOUR CALORIES, COUNTS YOUR EXERCISE FOR THE DAY, OR YOUR STEPS FOR THE DAY. You use it, and then you don’t use it. You use it, and then you don’t use it. And…the cycle continues.

And, you’ve downloaded the game with the little creature throwing bubbles. You use it, and you use it again. And, you use it again. What is the difference? It’s the competition, between you and the little creature. The fitness app, it just shows you what you haven’t done that day; or how much weight you will have gained/loss if every day were like this one. Now, it’s a game; between New Yoo and Old Yoo. Now you can put yourself in competition with yourself. If you choose for your goal that you want to walk at least 3 miles a day, approximately 6,000 steps. You set that as your goal. The average person walks about 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day (sedentary). So, this would be stretching the beginner. And that is what you want to do, if you are beginning. You set your goal to be 6,000 steps. And that day you log in 4,500 steps. New Yoo gets 4,500 points; Old Yoo gets 1,500 points. You win for that day! If you sat at your desk all long, very, very long day, you logged in 2,000 steps that day. New Yoo gets 2,000 points; and Old Yoo gets 4,000 points. You lose. You lose?! What?! You then say to ‘Old Yoo’, “Oh yeah! Well, just wait until tomorrow! You won’t win tomorrow! I’ll take that extra walk around the block, and I’ll park at the back of the parking lot!” And, just when you think you have it all under control, fooling yourself in your progression, the Old YOO sends you a text notification. (And, if it is the Old YOO, it isn’t going to be good job on beating me today!) The high abandonment rate among fitness apps was realized by Yoo’s developers, and they sought a way to rectify that situation. Dan Kinsbourne says, “We don’t play random games. Instead, we look forward to the World Series!” Chasing yourself, granted might be a little funny at first thought; however, we all know that we would get motivated by that competition. And, motivation creates action. And continued action creates a habit. And, a habit of activity is the desired outcome.

Cruises Are Very Popular, Why? By Barbara May

Photos Courtesy of Travel Leaders

HAVE YOU EVER TAKEN A CRUISE ? IF NOT, IT’S DEFINITELY SOMETHING TO CONSIDER. Cruising has

become very popular, but there are some people who have never been on a cruise. Here’s why you should consider a cruise for your next vacation. A cruise vacation can offer a multitude of destinations and amenities. Many cruisers fall in love with a destination and come back to stay for a longer amount of time, for example your Mediterranean cruises where each day you have the opportunity to visit a new and exciting place each day, but another perk to taking a cruise is you never have to carry your bags to a different place and by taking a cruise all your meals are included. A cruise vacation is a great option for those who like a change of scenery. From a floating entertainment center that takes passengers nearly anywhere, to tropical destinations, Alaska and even Antarctica. Understanding the benefits of a cruise will help you determine if it is the right way to spend your vacation budget. The cruise combines all of the necessary vacation components that you would otherwise pay for individually. Instead of renting a hotel room, eating out at restaurants, paying for shows and paying for transportation individually, all of those things are paid for when you purchase your cruise vacation. You can choose from a lengthy list of exciting shore excursions which will be added to your onboard account or explore on your own. All meals are included in the cruise package with the exception of alcoholic beverages. Overall, you are likely to get more for your money with a cruise. You have convenient access to all of those things right on the ship! A cruise saves you time on the planning process since the itinerary is already designed for you. You choose the cruise that fits your preferences and all you have to do is pack. You will not have to spend days or weeks deciding where to stay, where to eat and what to do for every day of your vacation. Coordinating all of the travel factors can be difficult. Since everything is located on the ship and readily

available, you constantly have access to entertainment without the stress of planning and coordinating.

Choosing the Right Cruise Line is the Key to a perfect cruise! Are you trying to plan a cruise? Is the cruise you are planning for the entire family, or more for adults? Did you know that there are many cruise lines and they all have something different to offer? While cruise lines try to persuade travelers they can offer an all-things-to-all-people onboard experience, we're increasingly seeing them carve out distinctive lifestyle niches. Celebrity is aiming at the spa and gourmet traveler, Carnival's focusing on mass-appeal food and entertainment, and Royal Caribbean is targeting active families. And, Disney is for over the top family experience! Still, picking the perfect ship is like choosing the perfect love match and can be very tricky. Even if cruise lines seem similar at first, they all have their own perks and quirks. And even the same line can offer different experiences based on the age and size of a ship and the destination and time of year you're sailing. The Cruise lines cater to more than 1.5 million kid vacationers a year. It's no wonder cruise ships are such a draw for families — there's lots of stuff for kids to do! While the kids are occupied in organized activities programs, adults get to enjoy some downtime. When the whole family is ready for some togetherness, waterslides and other fun play areas can provide places for creating memories. This year we have found that more families scattered throughout the U.S. are taking family reunion cruises together because the cruise ships provide a perfect venue for multigenerational groups. Everyone is free to do their own thing – play or lounge by day, and dine together at night.

Here are our top cruise lines for families.

Royal Caribbean: Active families appreciate the rock-climbing walls, waterparks and ice skating rinks, a merry-go-round and zipline on the Oasis-class ships (the largest ships in the world). Kids enjoy the presence of DreamWorks characters including Shrek, while adults have a choice of various venues day and night.

Disney: Disney characters including Mickey, Snow White and Cinderella light up the faces of both kids and nostalgic adults. There are also activities day and night for kids and some designed for the entire family to do together — including game shows, Disney movie showings and family-friendly shows featuring classic Disney tunes and characters. Disney also pays attention to adults, with nighttime adults-only bars, discos and energizing spas.

Carnival: Carnival is a particular good choice for families on a budget. The line has been going after the multigenerational market with its Fun Ship 2.0 programming — everything from Guy Fieri burger joints and waterparks to a game show themed on Hasbro toys. The adult "Fun Ship" attributes are also in place, from the big variety of bars to the lively casinos. New kids' programming includes activities themed with Dr. Seuss.

Norwegian: Waterparks, ropes courses and bowling are among activities that appeal to all ages. SpongeBob and other Nickelodeon TV characters make appearances in kids' and family programming. A big choice of alternative restaurants means you don't have to eat in the same dining room every night. Adults have fun in the casinos and numerous lounges. For well-heeled groups, if you book suites in The Haven you can have a pool and deck area practically to yourselves.

Oceania: This upscale line is a good choice for those groups that involve older kids. Passengers age 13 and up can join their parents and grandparents in classes at the Bon Appetit Cooking School. Oceania offers an impressive choice of casual and fancier dining venues (at no extra charge). Interesting itineraries allow extra time for port exploration.

Up and coming for 2015 – River Cruises As many as one million travelers took a river cruise in 2014. From the Danube to the Seine, from the Rhone/Saone to the Elbe and Rhine, Europe’s waterways – more and more A traveler can journey Europe’s waterways in a variety of ways typically carrying fewer than 250 passengers. With 20,000 total miles of inland waterways travelers absorb European culture at a relaxed, leisurely and up-close pace. The waterways of Austria, The Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Russia and others now have many options to meet the growing demand for river cruising. River cruises tend to be affairs of luxury, with an emphasis on informal, but upscale travel. Relaxation and intensive sightseeing are the main activities, as organized entertainment is somewhat limited on most river cruises, except for the occasional lecture or sing-along. Mostly, the crew allows passengers to enjoy their time as they see fit.

Viking River Cruises: With more itineraries in more destinations worldwide, Viking Cruise Lines offer behind-the-scenes insights and opportunities that set them apart from other cruise lines. They offer inspiring destinations, thoughtfully designed itineraries, cultural explorations, state-of-the-art ships, fine cuisine, excellent service and remarkable value. All created with personal attention to every detail. From visits to museums and landmarks, they go beyond! On every itinerary, you can experience local life through such excursions as home-hosted visits or trips to local markets. They offer the opportunity to see the working world of bakers and artisans, and the option for our guests to experience Privileged Access to museums, private collections and after-hours events that we thoughtfully curate. New for next year: Viking will bring its cutting-edge longship to the Seine River for the first time. Starting March 23, the "Paris and the Heart of Normandy" itinerary sails round-trip between Paris and Rouen, taking in some of the region’s most popular sites.

Including Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny and the World War II landing beaches in Normandy. The peak season for river cruising is much the same as European travel in general, late spring through mid-fall and early November. The shoulder season, a real value, ranges from early March through midMay. The autumn months coincide with grape season, and several cruise lines are fully booked during this time by wine connoisseurs. Finally, April is tulip season and cruises in and around the Netherlands are particularly popular. Travel by river is one of the best ways to venture out and take in the heart of the continent. Travelers who return from

river cruises carry memories of very intimate encounters with the countryside, local people, and fellow passengers. River cruise and barging travelers inevitably become true enthusiasts for the experience.

Travel agents can help: •

Choose the line that's right for you.

Make your booking.

Choose an appropriate cabin.

Assist with dining times, and submit any special meal requests.

Arrange airfare and transportation to the ship.

Help with pre- and post-cruise arrangements.

Advise on shore excursions.

Advise on travel insurance.

The reality is you're not likely to find greater savings by booking on your own through the cruise line — erasing one particular argument against booking with an agent — and you may even get a better deal through an agency that specializes in cruising including Travel Leaders located at 2765 Wolf Creek Parkway, Suite 104, Memphis, TN 38133 (next door to David’s Bridal) or you can contact Travel Leaders at 901-377-6600.

Why An All-Inclusive Resort Vacation May Be Right For You! By Lisa Rossmeissl

Vol. 1 Issue 8

ALLINCLUSIVE. WHAT IS ALLINCLUSIVE ? Well, according to the Travel Industry Dictionary, the term means one price covers all listed elements of a package or as a noun, a resort at which a single price covers lodging, meals, and activities. All-inclusive resorts have transformed the Caribbean vacation experience. The Caribbean is the back drop for most of these resorts, having captured vacationers for generations. I mean who isn’t drawn in by lush green mountains, brilliant sunshine, warm breezes and beautiful blue waters? Travelers will find that the resorts in the Caribbean have something for everyone. They cater to both the young crowd looking for fun, and couples and families who may be looking for a quieter scene. Besides being ideal for just about any traveler style, there are many other benefits all-inclusive resort vacations provide. You will have a more enjoyable getaway because you don’t have to keep thinking about the money you are spending. When you book an all-inclusive you have already prepaid for all your food, drinks and relaxation. Most all-inclusive resorts not only include all your food, drink and property activities, but some go so far as to actually include excursions such as a catamaran sailing. For many, that means that, other than your souvenirs your wallet never has to come out. This is a particularly great feature for those on a budget. Knowing ahead of time what you will be spending before you leave home and knowing you won’t have a large bill upon your return makes for a more

relaxing experience while on vacation. Flexibility. One of the reasons we go on vacation is to escape our routines. And what better place than an all-inclusive that lets you determine what you will do each day or not do? The resorts provide a daily activity newsletter to your room, letting you know when things are happening and it is purely up to you as to whether you participate or choose to lay in a chair all day. Dining is just as grand. They offer a wide range of dining experiences from sit down, buffets, theme nights, room service and private dining experiences. Today’s resorts keep offering more and more dining options, providing an around-the- world tasting pleasure. Family travelers will love the amenities that keep their kids

happy. The best resorts offer kids programs usually ranging from age 4 to 12, where parents can drop their kids off for various daily activities. Our favorite pick is Beaches Resorts because of the array of activities and inclusions provided. Beaches caters from infants through to your difficult tweens. They can accommodate special needs children as well. Couples will love the romance extras that are included. Some of our favorite resorts, Sandals, Secrets and Couples provide honeymooners with special romantic amenities such as champagne and rose petals in the room or drawn bath with lit candles. Plus, these resorts are what we refer to as adult only, couples only. And of course, a destination wedding at a resort can be a huge cost saver for couples compared to a traditional wedding at home, combining both their wedding and their honeymoon. So, is an all-inclusive vacation right for you? A nearly perfect vacation experience can be found in today’s all-inclusive resorts. With a variety of amenities, facilities and services to choose from at each property, a perfect fit is nearly guaranteed to be found. Beware, not all all-inclusive resorts are created equal. With the vast selection of Caribbean destinations and resorts to choose from, we recommend travelers contact a local travel agent to match them with the right resort.

A Lift Up

SARAH ARRIVES AT THE CENTER WITH HER TWO CHILDREN. SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAD A FIGHT, HE HIT HER, UNFORTUNATELY A KID SAW THIS HAPPEN. Sarah is in need of minor

medical attention, counseling, and a new lease on life. Tony, her son, age 12 is angry. Patty, the daughter aged 10 is scared. If they're going to stay at the center they're going to need new clothes since they left everything behind. Tony and Patty are going to need school, counseling and some healing. The center offers them a safe place to stay while they figure out what's going on in their lives. Tony is offered, art therapy (a lump of clay, and his hands can turn anger and frustration into art, and make him proud of something he has created). He is also offered sports therapy to work out positive male role issues, anger and aggression, and cooperation. Patty is offered one of the rescue animals, because she needs somebody to show her that she's safe, cared for and unconditionally loved. Of course Roscoe the dog had come from somewhere, and has been rescued himself. The animals are offered veterinary care, grooming, and housing, and food as well. Sarah is offered to work in the gardens, or do some other minor chore (i.e. housekeeping, cooking, or whatever her background is to trade) to offset her initial rent of one of the apartments, or houses on the property. Sarah is offered counseling, therapies of any kind that fit her needs, attorneys (if that's necessary), an elder mentor (which is another client at the center, this is a senior person, or someone who has been through what she has, or a “broken like me person). Obviously, the other people to do therapy or mentoring are also people working with the center. They can be people that live on property, or people that come and go. If they live on property their services could be something that they trade for their rent, helping Sarah and her kids. Any one of these scenarios are completely win win win. Very circular, and they all overlap.

Everyone that comes into the CENTER has something to trade of value to offset their rental, or therapy costs for living at the center. It can be taken care of the animals that come onto the CENTER. It could be working in the garden, cooking meals, house cleaning, working as a mentor. Any one of these situations is also very therapy to help heal them. Further scenario, the excess grown in the garden can be sold for cash or trade. The classes offered can be paid for in cash or trade, and attended and open to the general public. Now to go a step further... Jim also needs help. We offer him counseling, we asked the emotionally stronger, grounded men to talk to Jim in a nonthreatening way. Jim may not have understood the magnitude of the situation he created. Sometimes, a man just needs some other men (I want to say sane man) to simply have a conversation about how that's not an appropriate response and there are different ways to handle the situation. Now if you count with this one scenario, we have helped Sarah, Tony, Patty, Jim, Roscoe the dog, Betty and mentor, and that is just the beginning. We learn that Sarah wants to open her own business. The reason for the blow up was over money. Tony and Patty are starting to do very well in the charter school and are going to graduate out of the CENTER (of course win win again the teachers are also paid cash and trade for teaching at the CENTER) Sarah and Jim are working out their issues. Sarah started her own business, using cash and trade, earning both cash and trade. Tony is going on to become a dentist. The CENTER offers grant money, or possibly colleges in the future to help offset the cost. Tony will also come back to the CENTER and donate his skill to repay some of his grant money. This helps the other people coming into the CENTER of any dental care, for instance Pam just came in to the CENTER with her tooth knockout. Patty graduates from the CENTER and becomes a beautician. Same scenario as Tony, she comes back, offering her services to pay back the help that was offered to her. We now have grounded, emotionally stable young adults on the “right” path in their lives and we have broken the cycle of abuse, addiction and created a healing scenario that they can now help the next generation or council their own. The clothing that was offered when Sarah first arrived was recycled, re-purposed clothing, keeping it out of landfills as were all the appliances and dishes in the apartment or house they rented when they arrived. When someone leaves or graduates from the CENTER they are offered to “purchase” things

they will need for a new home (this is great for fire or catastrophic event victims). Since the CENTER runs on cash and trade and everyone has at least one skill that is tradable they can “purchase anything from the CENTER for either cash or trade. The CENTER is will also have a clothing line, animal product line, bookmarks, money clips, and any other way to monetize and generate profit (cash and trade) to generate necessary revenue to run the CENTER. The chickens that are rescued can produce eggs, feathers, and eventually meat. The CENTER has land with wild game to hunt. This is a very old ways idea or self-sustainability. Each CENTER is self-contained, running of whatever renewable resource is abundant in that area. We will work with all known organic growing ideas. There is no waste, nothing that cannot be repurposed, reused or recycled. The CENTER also works with all other non-profit organizations to allow maximum help and no red tape. This will heal and create the most good. For more information: http://redpaperclipcenter.com/

Yoga, the Union of Self-Care and Body Positivity By Thea Pueschel

Photos Provided by Thea Pueschel

TIS’ THE SEASON FOR PEOPLE TO WORRY ABOUT POUNDS GAINED FROM FOODS, SUGAR AND ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION. It’s the holidays a time of year that is meant for celebration and family, but is often fraught with stress, anxiety and over indulgence. Many blogs and magazine articles will be filled with these topics as well as how to lose those unsightly holiday pounds. There is always room for improvement in your life whether it is health or wealth or relationships. But, how about this holiday season we make a toast and a pledge to one another to be okay with the body we have today. Does this mean I am advocating poor health choices? Nope, I am advocating self-care and kindness to the body you have today. The holidays are for celebration. So, let the celebration begin with you. Have you ever taken a walk just because it sounded good? Have you ever taken a long bath just because it felt like it would nourish you? Have you ever decided to do something healthy not because of societal, family or friend pressure but just because it felt good? Self-care is one of those tricky areas of life, especially here in the states. It requires permission. You might have heard a friend say after showing you her new purse or piece of jewelry “Well, I would love to get a massage but I just can’t spoil myself right now.” We are taught that material goods have greater value than self-care. It’s represented in the media; it’s what sells and stimulates the economy. You may have also heard “I would love to do yoga, but I can’t; I am too fat right now.” Or “I am going to go to Hawaii as soon as I lose 25 pounds. I can’t go now, obviously.”

Before I committed to my very own yogic path, I too would not do things because I felt that my body wasn’t the right shape, that I would go to some exotic locale and lay on the beach if I could wear a bikini (never thinking that a bikini body is a body that you put a bikini in). I put my life on hold in a variety of aspects because I didn’t feel worthy. I wasn’t fit enough; I wasn’t thin enough, and my body wasn’t the shape that I thought was attractive. Once upon a time about a decade ago, I was attending Yoga at a dance studio on Wednesdays. There was a window that peered into the dance studio from the lobby. I would look into the window and watch the African Dance class. I wanted to take the class, but I was fearful of having two left feet. What if everyone looked at me and saw how uncoordinated I was? Or how uncomfortable I was? I would peer into that window every Wednesday before Yoga and wish I was brave enough to give it a try. One day, I truly became present. We talk about being "present" and "in the moment" in Yoga all the time. Somehow, on one Wednesday it came to pass. I was 100% present and noticed all the faces of those taking the class, and I realized something. They all had expressions of being uncomfortable; their brows furrowed as they stumbled over a step; the extremely uncoordinated were in the back of the room. I realized, they were all me, and I was them. This was the human experience, and I wanted to take part. Finally, the next week I gave myself permission to take that class. Yoga made me brave; it connected me to my body; it connected me to the moment, and it adjusted my behavior. Relating this story makes me think of Amy Cuddy in her Ted Talk® Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are stated “Our bodies change our minds…and our minds change our behavior…and our behavior changes our outcome.” Why that resonated so deeply for me, is I know that doing Yoga changed my mind, it changed how I felt about my body as well as how I spoke about my body. Standing in powerful poses such as Warrior I, II,

Yoga (Continued)

III, standing strong in tree, offering my heart in back bends opened me up to vulnerability and ultimately my inner strength. These poses unlocked my potential. They returned me to me and helped me shine brighter. After beginning a regular Yoga practice, I started to feel more grounded in my feet. I tripped less and less. The funny thing is, in yoga I never feared if I was the right shape nor if my lack of coordination would hold me back. I just loved the fact that the breath guides the body from one position to the next. Whatever happened on anyone else’s mat wasn’t my business. My practice was my own. It changed how I felt about myself and how I interacted with the world; I became much less reactive. I mellowed out. The movement and support of breath made Yoga my default “go to” for self-care. As my practice grew, I was able to take elements out of the studio classes I took and incorporate it in my everyday life. I could counteract hunching over a computer with a gentle back bend. If I had an overwhelming day or needed to shift my attitude I would throw my legs up the wall. The time spent on the mat leads to transformations. Nothing big at first, the changes are gradual. Moving from pose to pose helps build confidence. Learning the transition between movements can be tricky but once mastered it’s like floating on a cloud. If you can only master the breath, there is enough magic in that practice to sustain you for life.

The beauty of Yoga is that it is for everyone, though not all asanas (Yoga poses) are one size fits all. There is Yoga out there for every type of body, level of ability and mobility, flexibility and philosophy. You don’t have to look like the cover of Yoga Journal to be a Yogi. You don’t have to have the flexibility to join Cirque De Soliel to be in a beginner’s class. All you have to do to be a Yogi, is to practice Yoga. The definition of Yoga is union or to yoke. Through your practice, you can unite body, mind and spirit whether or not you can touch your toes. By becoming more mindful, experiencing breath as shape change and expression through movement you will connect to your body on a deeper level. Yoga is not a magic bullet. The way that it helps is it brings attention to your body, to your breath and to your life. Through the movement, through being present you will see personal transformation take place. When you move with the body, you have today you are saying “I am good enough.” You will marvel at the ways your body can move that you may have never thought possible. You will feel strong, grounded, and centered. You might even feel bold. You may even find yourself taking an African Dance Class, or eventually…teaching Yoga.

Wellness: Eating Healthier on a Cruise By Kally Efros

ONE THING YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NOT FIND IN A PROMOTION FOR ANY CRUISE ARE SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO EAT WELL . AFTER ALL, ONE THING CRUISE LINES HAVE EXCELLED AT , IS ACCOMMODATING; YOU WILL FIND A BEAUTIFUL ASSORTMENT OF FOOD. You will also find some healthier options that are just as appetizing. You can even request special needs ahead of time like Kosher, vegetarian or gluten free. Ships aim to please, so make your requests for healthier options if you want them.

The all-you-can-eat and all-inclusive natures of cruise dining put even the most committed passenger to the health conscious test. Before you skip past this article or call your travel agent to cancel the upcoming cruise, let’s look at some tips to help you with healthy on-board eating. Cruise lines do offer alternatives to those of us who want to eat well, even when on vacation. And it is possible. If you choose to eat healthier at home, and you choose to eat healthier on vacation, half the battle is won. Before your cruise you can work on your will-power and triggers using one of the many options, including the LifeLine Technique, hypnosis, EFT, and even meditation. I like to plan some options. I’ll drink an herbal tea while socializing. I plan for a plate of fruit instead of desserts. I also keep my food in balance, if I plan to have a dessert I will reduce sugar and carbs in the rest of my meals. The first choice you have is the dining venue. You can battle your willpower at a buffet, or dine in the privacy of your cabin to avoid peer pressure (assuming your partner supports you). There are also formal dining options, where the buffet is KEKO64 not staring at you the entire meal. In formal dining, you can opt out of any of the multiple courses. You can also request half-size or appetizer portions of any course. Check out your options and avoid impulsive choices. If you don’t eat fast food type meals at home, then don’t cave into them on a cruise. Pick and choose what is important to you, and what is special to you. Avoid eating just because it is there. Eat during normal eating times as best as possible, between 9 am and 8 pm, that will give your body a 13 hour rest from food. Once you decide where to eat, then you must decide how to eat. The cruise lines offer lower calorie options, typically involving less richness in the sauces and toppings. If you want to splurge for a meal, alternate excesses. Have a light lunch and indulge a little more at dinner, then switch it up the next day. D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 4 | 45

Remember every buffet will offer a salad bar and sliced fruits. Just don’t wander on down the line if you don’t intend to dive in. Whatever you eat, chew slowly, enjoy, and stop when you are full.

Apolonia

Using a smaller plate will encourage less food at the buffet. One trick I learned is to eat protein first and to get plenty of protein and fiber. You will feel more satisfied, full and the meal will stay with you longer.

A good general rule is half of your food should be fruits and veggies, heavier on the vegetable side. Get about 30% of your calories from protein, have some whole grains and healthy fats. A classic rule-ofthumb is to aim for at least three colors of food on your plate. This will encourage you to fit in fruits and vegetables. Start your day with a good breakfast. Include protein and potassium in that morning meal. Believe it or not, making sure you eat a good breakfast every day can be a crucial part of keeping those pounds off on your cruise vacation. Not only will this help your body get some of the essential nutrients and energy it needs early in the day, but eating breakfast also promotes a more active metabolism. Include fruits and vegetables when eating your midday meal and choosing snacks. Eat enough and well enough to support your physical activity for the day so that you are not starving when it comes time to eat dinner. At dinner, if you follow the rule and get your protein first, eat slowly to allow your body time to feel satisfied, then eat your salad and veggies. Lighten up on salad dressings, they can have tons of unwanted sugars. Opt for olive oil and vinegar if there are not good options. Avoid automatically having a roll or bread product unless it is something you really want. When it comes to dessert, enjoy dessert if you really want it. Just don’t eat one because it is there, and if it doesn’t taste good, don’t keep eating. Cut desserts in half or share with a friend. If you want to sample more than one – cut them even smaller. Have a fruit or fruit and cheese combination for dessert. Beverages can be a huge source of wasted calories. You can have soda anytime, that is, if you are a soda drinker, so skip the soda, juices and other sugary drinks as that will help balance out the extra meal items. Avoid juice as that is another source of extra sugar. Instead, drink a lot of water and if you are not a big water drinker, try herbal tea with a healthy sweetener like stevia. I can easily pack my own herbal tea and stevia. Often hunger will be disguised as thirst. Stay hydrated and you will eat less and

Eating Healthier on a Cruise (Continued) gain less. Don’t use fake sugar substitutes (that includes diet soda), it makes you crave more carbs. Keep alcoholic drinks simple. Avoid extra late night visits to the ice cream bar and avoid eating late at night. Stay active every day while on the cruise, walk and explore. Don’t take the elevator, use the stairs. Utilize the exercise facilities and pools if you are so inclined. Enjoy your vacation without making food the center attraction. One reader told me she avoided the elevator, ate lots of protein and veggies, and often had fruit for dessert. She did enjoy some desserts, but avoided juice and sodas. She tried lots of different foods and even had pizza. She lost 3 pounds and her husband gained 6 pounds eating everything. She didn’t skip meals, relaxed, slept and enjoyed herself. Make healthier choices if that is what you want to do. Don’t feel bad about your onboard eating, just keep it balanced. If you overindulge at one meal, eat a smaller meal next time. Make your calories count to be enjoyed, after all you can have French fries anytime, why have them on the cruise? You just have to choose to walk past the stuff you really don’t want. There are healthy choices available, make those feel like a treat and special. For me exotic fruit is a real treat. But remember it is your vacation, so enjoy yourself. ONCE UPON A TIME I GREW UP WITHOUT A TELEVISION. MY

MOTHER AND FATHER ENCOURAGED MY SISTERS AND I TO READ AND PARTICIPATE IN CREATIVE ACTIVITIES.

Mom was a talented sewer, Dad was an innovative thinker, full of ideas all of the time! One summer as usual I went to visit my Grandmother, it was there I was introduced to the sewing machine and the magic of making “scrunchies.” My cousin and I would sit for hours and make more scrunchies that we could ever possible wear but I loved it! Throughout the years I dabbled in creating different items and would share my creations with friends and family, in the form of gifts. When I was old enough to get a job I attained a job as an ice cream scooper. I despised the actual act of scooping ice cream but loved the freedom of working alone, setting the stage for the shift - I had a feeling I would never be satisfied working for anyone but myself. That feeling followed me in every job I took, even when I managed a corporate Hallmark store, I still thought about working for myself one day and focused on what skills I could bring from this experience into my own business. Fast forward a number of years-I went off to college along with a sewing machine and two bins of fabric- and it was just a hobby then! Attending college as an Interior Design major my creativity grew and passion for fabrics and design did as well. I sewed while others were at parties. I sewed when I was sad, happy and stressed out! The La Mia label was born. I held small scale “purse parties” in the female dorms. I continued to create for friends and started selling some items through retail establishments. I graduated from college with a design degree, took on a couple of jobs outside of the design industry, and continued developing fashion accessories on a journey to building a creative, self-sustaining business.

No matter what happened in my personal life the drive and passion to create and make a living from my designs was looming in my mind daily. The disintegration of mymarriage provided a stepping stone for growth in myself and my business. I remained focused and planned my next step in growth- I attended the Country Living Women’s Entrepeneurial conference as a “pitch your product” competitor. I was chosen as a participant and traveled to Chicago,Illinois with a suitcase of product I developed for the event. The Early History of the Handbag ByTammy Blakeslee

THE CONCEPT OF HANDBAGS AS A FASHIONABLE ACCESSORY ITEM CAME MUCH LATER IN HISTORY FROM ITS INITIAL INCEPTION. During Medieval days the handbag served as a pouch to transport life’s basic

necessities…literally. Transporting food, seeds, relics and medicine. Although, I’m sure a lot of women would consider make-up and cellphones as life’s necessities in modern times! The handbag was not just for women but for men too. As history goes on, the classic handbag was soon to be categorized as a woman’s staple accessory and the finishing touch to any outfit. Along with its feminine identity, the handbag became a symbol of sophistication and social class. The more extravagant the bag, the more wealthy the individual appeared. While in Medieval days the handbag served as a pouch to transport goods, it was also considered a symbol of marriage (I think we’ll stick with the ring!). Often the groom would give the bride a purse, which was called a “chancery,” with love stories embroidered into it. This gift giving of handbags was usually a tradition of the upper class. During the 18th century after the French Revolution, fashion changed and as a result so did the handbag. Women began sporting slender skirts with fewer pockets and were in need of a place to store their belongings. This increased the need for a handbag for women in the middle and lower classes who started to carry them on a daily basis. The Progression of the Handbag As we reach the late 19th century, technology was booming which opened the fashion gates to endless opportunities! Soon, the handbag advanced into many shapes, sizes, colors and designs that women could choose from. In the 1920’s and 30’s a new and distinct look arose. This was the era of shedding the elaborate, gaudier look and going for a cleaner, sharper image. This was the image of the flapper, the modern woman of its time! Top designers like Lanvin and

Patou created a new handbag called the clutch, which emphasized this new trend. This look was more masculine yet fitting for the era. It was simple yet chic, and it of course still carried all of the essentials that a woman needs.

Chanel and other designers began to make 'one size fits all' pieces through purses. Matt Burkholz collection, Route 66 West

Later, around the 1950’s, the handbag industry blossomed. This is when people realized that handbags are one-size-fits-all, unlike the French couture dresses. Because of this, designers like Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga took the lead in the handbag industry and sparked others like Coco Chanel and Hermes to gain immense popularity.

After the 60’s slump, in which items like bras, makeup, and handbags lost popularity with many feminists, the 70’s led way to a very simple style, meant mainly for practical reasons. Once women started to enter the work force in the 80’s, handbags began to evolve once more. This led way to the modern businesswoman bag. This made the bags larger and flashier, emphasizing the woman’s strength in the work place. This helped set the stage for more modern, sleeker trends. The Modern Handbag

Today, there is still so much room for handbags to grow. The stigma that handbags are strictly for women is far behind us. There are styles now that are both masculine and functional, such as the satchel. The classic feminine purse now comes in all shapes and sizes, including the clutch! There is a purse for ANY occasion. Whether you’re looking for an oversized tote to take to the beach, or a small strap bag that sits comfortably at your side

When Opposites Attract By Seema Gill

THE MOST POWERFUL AND DRAMATIC ATTRACTIONS ARE BETWEEN TWO OPPOSITES THAT FINALLY MEET. SO HOW DO WE BRING THAT INTENSITY AND CHEMISTRY TO YOUR HOME ? By contrasting furniture styles it

finds for a look that is unique in its richness and depth, giving your space personality and character that it deserves. So where do we begin? Take a look at the old age Pareto’s principle of the 80/20 Rule. The rule itself suggests that 80% of your outcome, comes from 20% of your inputs. Relating that to your home, that can translate to 80% of your space is unified by one style while you can contrast by 20% with another. Impact is created through contrast, and contrast can be applied to more than just color. You can get innovative with contrasting textures, shapes and even styles. So lets color outside of the lines and create a space with two differing styles. For instance, the inspiration in this dining room is a beautiful Teak Wood Sideboard, (Dala DÊcor: www.daladecor.com),the distressed character of this wood sideboard and the rustic iron handles gives it a charming contrast against the sleek and clean lines of the dining table and chairs. By bringing in an elegant chandelier with a warm neutral pallet with touches of red, gold, brown and black gracefully connects the contemporary and distressed styles. When you walk into this room and look around, pause for a few seconds; what is the first thing that you notice? My attention is taken straight to the distressed sideboard. An antique piece like this offers this space a great way to reenergize. If there was a more contemporary sideboard in its place, the focal point may have been blurred and not as obvious. A majestic piece such as this distressed sideboard gives it that unique and elegant look. This same room can be even more dramatic with a slight change of color. Two rooms

with the same decor but with a slightly different pallet provides this space with an equally stunning style, one being a little more dramatic than the other. Here again, we have taken a modern contemporary accent chair(Dala Décor) and wall art (Dala Décor) paired with a distressed desk (Dala Décor: www.daladecor.com) . The beauty of this room of course is all united with the cool color pallet of the wall and a hint of pink that has been pulled from the painting to give it that balance of warmth against the cooler more neutral colors. With the clean lines of the chair and art frame, the distressed table has given this room the personality and inspiration it requires. This can be a creative nook or an office space that allows energy to flow within.

Alluring pieces such as the sideboard and the desk or the more contemporary chair and the eye catching art are one of many treasures that Dala Décor has acquired through passion of travel, history and design. Visit Dala Décor at http://www.daladecor.com; there will certainly be a piece that will appeal to your senses.

10 Nutrition Commandments for the Pantry: By Wendie Schneider RDN, LD

1. A PERFECT PANTRY ALWAYS HAS EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL. In my pantry, I use a wide variety of oils including olive, sesame, coconut, and walnut oils, but olive oil is the most versatile. I cook with it and also use it in the raw as a salad dressing or over my entrees for extra flavor. 2. Make friends with the avocado. Avocados contain heart healthy monounsaturated fat. This type of fat can improve blood cholesterol levels, decrease risk for heart disease, and help keep blood sugars stable. I use avocado on salads, sandwiches, for guacamole, or even eat it alone. 3. Don’t be afraid of butter. Real fats are not the enemy. They are essential for strong bone development. They are high in fat soluble vitamins, which are lacking in most diets today. It is the processed industrial fats like margarine or Crisco that contain ingredients called trans-fats that are bad. It’s this simple- don’t fear butter. 4. Go nuts! Nuts are an excellent source of Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant many of us fall short on because there are so few sources of it. Studies have shown that adding nuts consistently to the diet helps to lower cholesterol levels, particularly the arteryclogging LDL’s.

Antpkr

5. You should always stash yogurt in your fridge. Yogurt contains probiotics. These promote a healthy digestive tract. Our gut is the largest immune organ in our body, so if you want to remain healthy and keep the bad “bugs” away, eat probiotics! 6. You should be drinking milk. Studies show that three servings of dairy each day seems to have positive effects on losing body fat, reducing waist circumference and increasing lean mass. I use whole or raw milk from local farms when possible because it is the least processed, it tastes better, and it keeps me satisfied longer.

7. Add eggs to your cart. Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse. The egg is the highest quality protein. One egg fulfills 10% of our daily protein needs. Eggs also contain Vitamin K which is vital for healthy bones. Eggs contain choline, a nutrient that helps with brain memory, and leutin for healthy eyes. 8. The sweet potato should be in your pantry year round. Sweet potatoes are packed with Vitamin A in the form of beta carotene, which is a powerful antioxidant. They can be baked in the oven or microwave, and also boiled. Fill them with chili, cheese, spinach, and black beans. Incorporate them into your favorite soups. Bake them as wedges instead of fries. The possibilities are endless.

9. Buy fresh fruit in season and always have on hand. There are so many fruits and so many choices. If you get overwhelmed check out my “What’s in aopsan Season” section and get some fresh new ideas. Give it a try—on top of cereal or yogurt, in salads, even grilled! 10. Eat WILD. Have plenty of lean meats in your pantry because protein is the primary building block for lean muscle. I try to buy meats that are grass-fed. Much of the time farmers in America add grains and corn to their animals’ feed and fill it with additives like hormones or antibiotics. Corn fattens up the animals quickly, and it’s cheap and readily available. Corn-fed meat is also much higher in omega six fatty acids, which cause inflammation that leads to many health problems. We need to add more omega three fatty acids into our diet to counteract this. Animals that are grass-fed or wild and fish from their natural environment offer higher levels of this healthy fat.

IT IS VERY SIMPLE—EAT REAL FOOD! http://www.pantrydr.com/ Do you need a Pantry Makeover?

Permanent Makeup and Disposable Single Use Hand Held Needles

By Deborah Paulmann

I USE DISPOSABLE SINGLE USE HAND HELD NEEDLES FOR IMPLANTATION OF PIGMENT FOR PERMANENT MAKEUP.

"Micropigmentation" is the technical term for the process of Permanent Makeup implantation. The only similarities in Permanent Makeup and Tattooing should be the use of a Tattoo gun, and nothing else especially for procedures on the face. Tattoo inks should never be used on the face as they are made of Iron Oxides, which will always change color on the face, and the Tattoo is PERMANENT; where the Permanent Makeup pigments are Organic Pigments which will fade down and not change color as in Tattoo, also "permanent" makeup isn't really PERMANENT and the time frame for how long it actually does last differs from person to person for many reasons (environment, swim and sun exposure, skincare and skincare products used as well as the actual location of the implantation all affect the potential breakdown of the Permanent makeup pigment; as an example someone who is a daily swimmer or spends much time in the sun may not have the same lasting pigment as someone who does not......), so where permanent makeup may last up to five years on one person, on another it may need touchup after a year or two. By the same token, the lasting potential of the makeup would be affected by the quality of the professional doing the implantation. I am AAM trained and certified as well by the AAM and was trained using disposable needles (these ones in the picture are made by Softap, with several different sizes of needles); I was not trained using a gun. While I have often witnessed the use of the gun, and have considered training with such--I am most comfortable with the complete control and calm quiet of using disposable needles, but most of all for sanitary reasons; when I am finished with my procedure, I appropriately dispose of everything on my work tray. The needles are placed into a sharps container for proper disposal. There are different sized needles (meaning the amount of needles actually in the implement) for different procedures, and I sometimes use more than one during a particular procedure. My most common procedures are eyebrows, eyeliner and lip color. The needle I use most often for these is a C5, which is 5 needles. I have done eyeliner using a 1 needle,

needle when the client only wants a very subtle line, more a line of a series of dots rather than liner. On larger areas, on some lip colors and some camouflage procedures, I use C18 which has many more needles to cover a larger area, though when doing lip color with lip liner, I will also use a C5 for the liner of the lip. I love the disposable needles, and the very few times that I've had any issue with any needle, Softap has always replaced the needle without question. So I am not only very happy with the needles but with Softap as well!!

Eco Footwear Brand Donates One Pair for Every Pair Purchased this Season

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A WONDERFUL TIME OF YEAR. SOMETHING INTANGIBLE SHIFTS IN THE ATMOSPHERE, FILLING THE WORLD WITH MORE SMILES, HUGS, GENEROSITY AND LAUGHTER. While many celebrate alongside family and friends with every need fulfilled, there are many more who struggle to make ends meet and care for their families.

It is this reality that inspired eco minimalist footwear brand kigo, to partner with anti-poverty organization Soles4Souls, specifically their micro-enterprise program which creates sustainable jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities. Soles4Souls delivers donated shoes to micro-entrepreneurs in areas of need who sell the footwear for a profit, ultimately supporting their families, strengthening their communities and stimulating their local economies. kigo encourages customers to make an impact by purchasing with a purpose this season and it involves a win, win, win. Every style of the brand’s ultra-lightweight and flexible footwear, featuring an anatomical shape, wide toe box and thin, zero-drop, slip-free outsole, is $25 off sitewide. Comfy shoes that are good for the feet and offered at a holiday deal…WIN for the customer! Every pair of kigos reduces its ecological footprint as the brand adheres to a cradle-to-cradle production philosophy, beginning with components that are vegan, recycled, recyclable and upcyclable. To close the lifecycle of the shoes, well-loved and well-worn kigos can be sent to reclaim partners Soles4Souls and PLUS Compound Technologies. Footwear that ensures nothing kigo does, and nothing a customer buys, need go to waste…WIN for the environment! Cruise Jewelry By Melinda Lewis

Your True Colours

Vol. 1 Issue 8

FINDING JUST THE RIGHT PIECE OF JEWELRY FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION HAS BEEN PART OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE FOR MILLENNIA.

TRADITION, FOLKLORE, SUPERSTITION, AND STATUS HAVE EACH EXERCISED THEIR INFLUENCE ON WHO SHOULD WEAR WHAT, WHEN . As both culture and jewelry manufacturing techniques evolved, new conventions were adopted, eventually dictating the appropriate styles worn in various venues. The jewelry one ought to wear while on a cruise to be found fashionable, is one only example in a long history of informal rules in the lexicon of jewelry fashion. The story of its invention, popularity, and infusion into the larger culture offers a special window into the evolution of fashion. In the late 19th century, imitation jewelry was entering an era of acceptance. It was for good reason as theft and robbery were too often commonplace. The wealthy began to see its importance as a suitable and identical substitute for the family jewels kept protected and secured in bank vaults. In the process, hand-cut paste and imitation stones, while previously considered gauche, began to make their way into evening jewelry worn by the elite. As the trend progressed, jewelry fashionably worn only at night became appropriate to adorn one’s daytime costume. Over time, imitation jewelry took on a life of its own, becoming popular and chic, paving its way to a larger acceptance. By the 1920s, sport jewelry was all the rage, replacing the filigree and Edwardian style with more modern and geometric shapes. In a common fashion reversal, by the late 1920s, this classical daywear style invaded the evening mode. Jewelry once appropriate for day time wear adorned the evening frock. Amber, topaz, carnelian, and crystals, once only suitable for more casual wear, were the “it” chic. What was once considered a “barbaric” fashion trend adorned the debutante. Evening events in New York, where celebrities and fashionables wore the accessory de jour, daytime sport jewelry was now worn by the audiences of Broadway. The shift in attitude perhaps Paris was ever the influencer and designers such as Chanel, Patou, and Lelong, most often set the trends for International fashion, but a new genre of jewelry was emerging in America. The love for sport jewelry turned attention to a new class of jewelry, jewelry meant not for evening, but in celebration of a few American pastimes ─ vacation, the beach, and cruises. Beach jewelry first gained its popularity in the 1930s. Jewelry was manufactured in the shape of sea creatures, often of white Catalin, and was worn for casual, evening wear, or beach bathing. White snail jewelry was highly popular, as was other jewelry fashioned in white. Considered a smart color accent for certain frocks, white came highly recommended by fashion advisors such as Amos Parrish in the 1930s. And, although this trend was inspired mainly by the style designs of American designers, French designer, Patou, had his interpretation of “bathing jewelry” made of rubber and cork.

D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 4 | 84

was the initial movement to create a nuance of egalitarian fashion, which enabled more people to wear jewelry not solely for the elite.

Cruise Jewelry (continued)

In the 1950s, with the harmony of jewelry genres crossing over many facets of fashion, the jewelry industry began to produce lines of jewelry specifically for cruises. After a half-century tradition of wearing formal dress for dinnertime on cruises, women were encouraged to wear jewelry that added to the romantic story of sailing on the high seas. Introduced each year in November, this jewelry was designed to be worn on the high seas or as a symbol of the well-travelled Palm Beach crowd. Jewelry manufacturers featured these collections in New York, Los Angeles and at the “Cruise Line Show” in Miami Beach. Cruise jewelry tended towards the light and comfortable. It was often adorned by or constructed from plastics that were very practical for the tropical air. Jewelry was frequently white or Necklace, c. 1940s made from accented with white, combined with wonderful pastels, sea foam mother-of-pearl beads. green, and the color of tropical waters. The success of these cruise jewelry lines in the 1950s paved the way for its acceptance off-ship. White jewelry found its way into the Op-art jewelry fashion of the 1960s and the popular jewelry styles of the 1970s, evolving into the twotoned spectator collections of the 1980s and ‘90s. Although the cruise industry continues to experience growth and popularity beyond anything that could ever have been predicted in the 1950s, long gone are the days when fashion jewelry had its category for this relaxing pastime. Today, passengers are often encouraged to leave the jewelry behind and gone is the romance of the fashionable high seas. By wearing the fashionable cruise jewelry from earlier eras as kitsch, we tap into the fun and creativity of the past and set the trends for our future. Melinda L. Lewis is the author of The Napier Co.: Defining 20th Century American Costume Jewelry Life By Design Publishing, 2013. Biofermentation Skin Care Treatment

Your True Colours

Vol. 1 Issue 8

LEARNING THE INGREDIENTS, FORMULATION, AND THE SCIENCE TO SUPPORT THE CLAIMS IN SKIN CARE SOMETIMES IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DO; HOWEVER, IT SHOULD BE THE FIRST STEP ONE TAKES IN CHOOSING A SKIN CARE . The results will be the end game of the

skin care merry-go-round. Anti-aging is usually the first thing that most women will notice when choosing skin care. Invasive procedures frighten many women, and those are finding that they feel more comfortable with skin care they apply themselves. Innarah® is a skin care system that will take its place among the most elite of skin protecting and anti-aging care. Innarah® Inc. has formulated a unique technology known as biofermentation. The brand’s signature VenoDefense collection has been perfected in the fermentation process, and developing it into an antiaging formula. The skin care treatment replicates the effects of snake venom. Snake venom has recently been found to be a good anti-aging process through smoothing fine lines. Other botanically based ingredients included with cutting edge ingredients such as Elk Antler Velvet, Ormus Gold, Plant Stem Cells and Marine Phytoplankton. The fermentation process also works with the immune system and gives permanent results, almost immediately. The Bioferm process developed by Innarah® is modeled on the ancient alchemic process called, “Nigredo”, who sole purpose is to transform the life force within matter. Innarah’s ingredients are fermented, there is no danger of the ingredients going through an oxidation process; plus, the result is a much more powerful cream. The shelf life of this natural skin care treatment is up to two years, namely because of the fermentation process. The ingredients are powerful, just like raw food. It helps with the skin’s own immune system. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and is the first line of defense in the immune system, it’s imperative to help protect it. Just as our daily diet of fruits and vegetables is important for our system to function properly; our skin is in need of nourishment, gained through those foods we eat, and by the treatments absorbed. The skin care treatment helps with the body’s immune system during the absorbing process. (Rub some garlic juice on your feet, in a few minutes you will taste it in your mouth. What we put on our skin, does go into our body.) The reticulation of Langerhans Cells, which are white blood cells generated in the bone marrow is the scientific explanation. When these cells arrive at the epidermis, they develop small legs or dendrites, and automatically generate an immune response to the skin when they come into contact with ingredients they don’t recognize. But ingredients that have been through the biofermentation process are readily accepted by these cells; so, Innarah acts as a bio catalyst.

Using Innarah products also aid the skin by diffusing and removing under eye puffiness and inflammation. The system is for all skin types, for men or women, and for all ages.

Using the products allows one to see and feel the difference the Bioferm makes in the process of the skin care treatment. The products are very concentrated; one drop does one’s entire face. Your True Colours – Transformations By Carolyn Bendall

WHO: JAN GORDON, 60, SINGLE, FABULOUS, HAPPY, INDEPENDENT WOMAN, WITH 3 GROWN CHILDREN, LIVES IN EAST M EMPHIS AND IS A CRYE-LEIKE REALTOR.

Issues: Friends talked her into doing the makeover. She agreed because she wanted to learn how to do her hair and makeup. Hair fix: Ted Cortese, nationally recognized hair colorist, owner of diVa Colour Studio in East Memphis, noted that though Gordon is a warm skin tone her hair was too light and too warm and washed out her features. Cortese used Organic Color Systems’ medium blonde with a little ash so the tones in her face were enhanced. Then, he brought out the warmth in the highlights, a light brown. Karl Smith, European trained Master Stylist, then reshaped Gordon’s cut to work with her face shape and adjust the movement of the hair for her to be able to manage. He did point cutting within the layers to create a soft, shattered look. The result took width off of the sides of her face and instead focused on her eyes. Smith left length on the top to create some volume. Smith gave detailed instruction for Gordon to be able to style at home. He spritzed Scuples Blow Dry Spray over Gordon’s wet hair until the moisture was out. He then applied Scruples Dual Design gel/wax over the hair. He then placed sections of hair in the wide toothed side of a comb and slightly bent the hair upwards then directly applied the blow dryer for a few seconds along the comb, using low heat and low power. To finish he used his fingers to lift the hair gently and applied heat from the drier at the roots. To set he used a pea-size amount of Scruples Finishing Paste and went through the hair to piece it out, and scrunch, depending on what was needed.

Before: Gordon wanted to get away from all black.

eauty fix: Carolyn Bendall, makeup artist for DiVa Colour Studio, started with European organic mineral powder foundation by Zao. She then used YTC Jade mineral powder eye shadow along the lash line of the lid, followed by YTC Wheat over the entire lid. YTC Brown mineral powder eye liner was applied

with a flat angled brush along the lower lash line only, and only from the outer edge to the center of the eye. YTC Blonde mineral pressed eyebrow powder was used on Gordon’s eye brows to fill in sparse areas. Zao Organic Pressed Finishing Powder was used to set the makeup. Then, YTC Pressed Mineral Bronzer was applied on the cheeks; Gordon’s Warm Tawny skin tone does better with a bronzer over an actual blush. Zao Organic Matte Lipstick in Red-Orange was used. Gordon has severe eye watering with mascaras, so the Brown eye liner was all that was used. Fashion fix: Vera Terrell, Certified Retail Consultant with Fashion Academy at Dillard’s Oak Court took Gordon out of all black and into bright fall colors. Terrell showed Gordon how to go outside of her color palette successfully by starting with Bryn Walker’s bamboo blend Tunic in Ischia (blue), which is in her color palette. Then Bryn Walker tunic and Casbah pants in Rioja (purple-red), were added, which were not in her color palette. Terrell finished the outfit with the Bryn Walker Santa Fe cotton cardigan in Ischia and a multi colored scarf by Fraas. Gordon added her own purple suede flats to complete the look. Score card: Gordon sat mesmerized by Smith giving her detailed explanation of how to do her hair. “This was a fun experience and everyone was so nice and so much fun.” diVa Colour Studio gave her Scruples Dual Design gel/wax, Texturizing Paste, Restorative Shampoo and Restorative Conditioner. Dillard’s Oak Court offered her 50% off, she purchased the top, tunic, pants, and scarf.

After: Bright colors fit into exactly what Gordon wanted to accomplish.

Insider info: From Smith: Don’t fight against your hair, let your hair do its thing and you adapt your style to that. From Bendall: When wearing colors outside of your color palette, to keep the unnatural redness, darkness under eyes and attention drawn to wrinkles that doing so creates; simply make sure that you have your best color up next to your face by way of a turtleneck, scarf, or high collar; if the color isn’t too far off then a statement necklace in your color will create the same outcome, flattering your undertones.
