Life Image – Realistic Goals

A New Year traditionally brings on New Year’s Resolutions. We see the beginning of a new year as the time to begin to shape ourselves into the person we dream of being. This is not a bad thing, however, there is a flaw in this thinking because within the first few weeks (or days) of the year those resolutions have been broken, forgotten, and left to the preference of keeping on as if no plan had been placed in action. And, therein lies the problem; no plan placed in action.

We decide that we must look like the ‘norm’ that fashion dictates we must look; we decide that we must be as perfect as our neighbor or friend; and we decide that all of this must happen within the first few days of making the resolution. And, therein lies the rest of the problem; unreal expectations.

Rather than make a full year resolution (who in the world can bite off that elephant!), simply make one resolution that will span 7 days, no more and no less. For one entire week, I will fold the laundry as soon as it comes out of the dryer or when I return home (this is allowing for those times when we throw something in the dryer while we are getting ready for work and there was a load already in the dryer). Check list time. Yes, check list time. Just pull out an index card and make an ‘X’ for each time you folded the laundry each time it came out of the dryer. You can write ‘Laundry Folded’ at the top and then have all of your ‘X’s’; or you can divide it up into 7 days of the week and put your ‘X’s’ inside each day. Then, you do this two more times for a total of 21 days. Now, it should be habit. If you mess up, just keep going, no need to start over.

Some people need an accountability buddy. This person shouldn’t be a spouse, partner, or significant other. (This is very important, to reduce the likelihood of brewing up disagreements on all levels.)

Some people need a plan, they cannot develop the ideas of what needs to be done on their own.

Usually this is because they see so much that needs to be done. Creating or purchasing a goal setting guide will assist this type of personality.

However you plan on developing your resolutions, at minimum, please make them realistic. If you want to lose 50 pounds, do not make that your goal. Your goal is to lose 1 pound a week, and you only weigh yourself once a week. Now, the goal is achievable. Well, it is if you have also resolved what dietary habits you are going to change to help you achieve your goal. You want to read all of the Harry Potter books; start with the first one and resolve to read at least one chapter a week.

Saying you are going to read the entire series is too difficult to comprehend; one chapter a week, doable.

The Reverend Don Mowery has just completed a fascinating account of his more than 50 years as an Episcopal Priest and his work with Youth Service, Memphis and Youth Service, USA. The book, Spiritual Networking: Father Don Mowery and Youth Service, is written by Darrell Uselton and David Yawn.

During his tenure with the agency, Youth Service established four major youth training programs locally and expanded three of them to over 100 U.S. military bases across the country. Workout Routines from Home

FOR MANY PEOPLE STARTING A NEW

EXERCISE ROUTINE THEY WANT TO WORK OUT FROM HOME . T HIS CAN BE DUE TO MANY REASONS. You may not

feel comfortable going to a gym yet.

You may not have the correct equipment or no clothes to wear. Or you just could have time constraints that keep you at home.

If this is the case for you then there are plenty of exercise choices for you.

You can easily pick up an exercise DVD and pop this in at home and then

exercise when you can.

When choosing an exercise program think about what you are interested in. Do you want to learn yoga, Zumba dance or even belly dancing? Exercise can and should be fun!

If you follow shows like the Biggest Loser then grab one or two of their DVD’s and follow along. You can even combine this with signing up for an online program where you can record your exercise and keep track of your goals.

You don’t even have to go out and purchase anything to start exercising at home. You can design your own fitness routine by combining some cardio with strength or resistance training.

As the exercises become easy add some more or increase your weights. For cardio try to increase the length of time or your intensity level as it becomes easier.

Working out from home has a couple of benefits with the main benefit being that you don’t have to pay for a gym membership. You also don’t have to worry about buying fancy gym clothes either. On the downside you may find that it is harder to make yourself motivated each day and you might get lonely working out alone.

As you can see there are many workout routines that you can do from home. You definitely have no reason not to exercise. Dig down deep inside you and discover why you want to start exercising and write these reasons down. How to Stop Negative Mind Chatter!

How to Stop the What If’s and Anxiety!

Everyone at some time or other is going to go through unnecessary anxiety. I confess, many years ago this was something I could be heard quite often to be saying. “What if this, or what if that!” The only thing I created, as many people do, was allowing anticipatory anxiety to take over my life.

Anytime you have to take some kind of risk or something is not within your comfort zone, it’s quite common to create stress for yourself by going to this place. However, there are ways in which you can change this pattern and make life much less stressful and more fearless for yourself.

Assuming you are not doing something that could create the outcome of death or injury, the first thing to do when something comes up that you are not sure about is to ask yourself; “What’s the worst that can happen?” Usually once you see this answer nothing looks quite as bad as it might have been. To read the tips for decreasing anxiety and stress.

Learn to put in place stress releasers so that they are there when you need them.

Deep breathing. Yes, it may seem a bit cliché but it works. For many centuries Buddhist monks have used conscious deliberate breathing during meditation. If you can, sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and start breathing in and out slowly allowing yourself to take in really deep breaths and slowly exhaling. Deep breathing oxygenates your blood, centers you and clears your mind.

Laughing is another way to release anxiety and stress. It releases endorphins and tricks your nervous system into making you feel happier.

Since caffeine has a tendency to create stress, instead of reaching for coffee or some kind of energy drink that just makes you feel stimulated, try a decaffeinated herbal or green tea which will relax you rather than feed into the stress.

Learn to practice ‘mindfulness.’ Yoga, pilates, and tai chi can actually prevent stress from taking over in the first place. stockimages

This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym for a workout. Maybe just a short walk, a change of environment or just stretching. Music is also a great stress reliever, turn on some music and let yourself free dance. You will find the what if’s and anxiety disappear quite quickly.

Sometimes when a stressful situation occurs it can interrupt your sleep pattern because you are so anxious about an outcome that you find yourself not able to sleep. Stop using your computer or phone and turn off the TV at least one hour before you intend to go to sleep so your mind is not stimulated.

Put these tips into place in advance so if something does happen that might cause some stress you have a strategy on hand to reach for. stockimages Stressful situations that cause anxiety are often unavoidable in life but it doesn’t mean you have to actually have anticipatory anxiety. Always think about what will happen if the worst doesn’t take place, you will have created all that anxiety and stress in your body and mind for no reason.

With some patience and a few simple strategies, you can stop the “what if’s” and you can reduce stress.

Wellness: A Brand New You Using Vintage Techniques for Health and Wellness

HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT THE WELLNESS INDUSTRY IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING INDUSTRIES IN THE UNITED STATES? YET, IT IS EASY TO NOTICE THAT WE ARE NOT GENERALLY LIVING VIBRANT HEALTHY LIVES. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT IN OUR HIGH TECH SOCIETY OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, WE LOST SIGHT OF BASIC WELLNESS PRINCIPLES AND NOW WE ARE PAYING THE PRICE ?

I have been working with people for over ten years and over and over again I can see that most of the health challenges people are facing can be remedied with seven basic principles. I have developed a program called:

Seven Simple Steps to Health and Wellness: Water, Food Rest, Exercise, Own Your Power, Environment and Play They really are simple steps! They are not new. I like to call them ‘vintage’ techniques for health and wellness. Let’s look a little closer: 1. Water. You need to drink about half your body weight in ounces daily. For example if you weigh 150 pounds, you would need 75 ounces of water. Dr. F. Batmanghelidj discovered that 75% of the reasons Americans go to their doctors was dehydration for conditions from inflammation, depression, sleep issues, sickness, constipation and more.

New: Spend lots of money on bottled water, water products and flavored water. Most, if not all, offer no real health benefits. They have added sugars and artificial flavorings. That includes the products labeled as natural. I personally never ever buy enhanced water.

Vintage Technique: Carry a water bottle, and drink your water. If you want enhanced water, add fruit to it. People actually used to do that. Make herbal tea. Drink water as your primary beverage, just like it used to be.

2. Food. The food you eat is your fuel. Without a healthy diet, your body cannot make repairs, power your immune system or provide your brain with energy. You need real food as opposed to “food stuff”. The My Plate standards are pretty simple to follow. Protein contains the amino acids to REBUILD your body, while fruits and vegetables provide your vitamins and minerals.

New: Processed foods with added nutrients that look better, store longer and travel farther to the store. Fake foods like chemical sugar substitutes or tons of preservatives added.

Convenience and speed outweighs nutrition and quality. Mono eating, eating the same thing each week and an extremely limited choice of vegetables and fruit. Food that has been hybridized so much that we are missing key nutrients.

Vintage: Momma always said to eat your veggies. It turns out that momma was right. In the old days, we had tons of variety, providing the diversity of nutrients needed for optimal health.

Eat food grown closer to home, in your own garden or purchased fresh from a local farmers market. You will be healthier when you eat a well-balanced meal. In my local community, there wasn’t a grocery store until well into the 20th century. Historically, grocery stores sold dry goods. You grew your own produce, butchered your own meat, and milked your own cow.

Adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night, teens need 8 to 9 hours, younger children need 10 to 11 hours, toddlers need an average of 11 to 14 hours of sleep and infants need as much as 14 to 16 hours of sleep. There is a connection between sleep and health.

New: Modern lifestyle keeps us busier and we tend to squeeze more into a day than is realistic.

We have access to TV and technology that can distract us and keep us awake. The average adult gets around 7 hours of sleep or less per night and most complain that their sleep is not restful. We load up on energy drinks during the day because we are not well rested, and that makes sleeping more difficult.

Vintage Health and Wellness (Continued) Vintage: Go to bed earlier and make sleeping a priority. When you rest you restore. Get enough sleep so that you wake up refreshed. Avoid the ‘I need to do it all’ mentality.

Grandma’s advice often included “sleep on it and it will make more sense in the morning”. As it turns out, research has proved that sleep allows you to access information that is remote to the initial problem. Your brain chills out and things can become clearer.

Regular exercise helps with weight, combats health conditions and disease, improves mood and actually boosts your energy. It is important that you get a variety of exercise including strength, aerobic, and stretching.

New: You need a gym or expensive equipment to work out and exercise.

Vintage: Our grandmothers didn’t have a gym, but they did a lot more work around the house. You can replicate that with tasks around the house.

Growing up I had a lot of chores like chopping wood, feeding the animals, milking, gardening and housework. I definitely stretched, built strength and stayed in shape. While you may not have a farm, you can still focus on strength exercise by lifting your babies, playing with them or lifting cans of food and some basic calisthenics routines like squats, push-ups, lunges, crunches and more.

Get moving, stretch, jog in place, do some jumping jacks, jump rope, or take a walk with a friend.

New: Someone else is to blame for my problems. Over-extending, trying to do too much or trying to make everyone happy. Social media and modern advertising contribute to envy and keeping up with the Jones’. There is always a new therapy out there, the self-help movement is huge.

Vintage: Og Mandino said, “Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later.”

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” Norman Vincent Peale said, “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.” Take responsibility for yourself and your happiness. Don’t dwell on problems. Look for the silver lining as the old saying goes.

New: New farming techniques often come at a price to the consumer in the form of chemicals causing problems. Modern lifestyle contributes to the pollution of our water, air and land. Even rural communities are at risk for increased pollution and contamination.

Vintage: Get old fashioned air with air filters and house plants. House plants really do help clean the air. Get vintage water with a good water filtration system rather than polluting the environment with water bottles. Choose organic produce or produce that is grown without chemicals.

7. Play. Everyone needs down time and play time. Play is essential for problem solving, creativity and relationships. The World Health Organization considers play time an essential right for all children. Adults do not lose the need for play as they grow up. Play time improves your mental health and reduces stress.

New: Play is dismissed as wasted time and unproductive, we’re too busy. Play time has become heavily dependent on technology. Play time for children has been replaced with classes and more structured extra-curricular activities.

Vintage: It has been common place throughout the ages to take time to celebrate together, play games, and relax. In the old days, kids were sent outside to play. Everyone needs the freedom to play for a portion of the day. You don’t need expensive technology. Enjoy board games, building blocks, sports (the real thing), or play with your pet. Learn a hobby like gardening, quilting or model trains. Interact in the real world. Connect with your friends and neighbors.

WHEN MOST COMPANIES DECIDE TO PARTICIPATE IN A SHOW, THE FIRST THING AND OFTEN THE ONLY THING - THEY THINK ABOUT IS WHAT THEIR EXHIBIT SPACE IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE . While that's certainly important, it's just one of seven factors that will decide if the event will be a success for you. These elements have neatly been quantified at the Seven Ps of Exhibiting. They are: Product. No matter how well you do everything else, if your product not something the people attending that show want, it's not going to sell. Maybe no one wants it, or maybe you're at the wrong show.

Price. Shows are a marketplace, which means your competition will likely be there. If you're being under-priced, and don’t have a competitive advantage to compensate, you may be in trouble.

Presentation. This is the actual exhibit, and there are books written about how to create an effective one. The basics are: do not block people from entering your exhibit; have a solid backdrop with signs, graphics or merchandise that makes it very clear what you do; put down carpet or floor covering; and do something that shows people what you do. Good lighting can also make a huge difference.

Personality. The person working your exhibit needs be friendly, want to be there, and approachable. Approachable includes staying off their cell phone, and to remain standing. If they cannot stand the entire time, get a high stool or directors chair. That way they are at least on eye-level with people walking down the aisle.

Professionalism. According to a national survey, the number one thing people remember about an exhibit is not the exhibit - it’s the person working the exhibit that they spoke to. That person needs to be an expert on whatever you

do, be able to communicate it, and look the part. They also need to understand why they are there, and what results are expected.

Pre-promotion. The best way to have people enter your exhibit is to have them come to the show looking for you. Let your customers, prospects, and the general public know you're going to be there.

Better yet, give them a reason to seek you out.

Post-show follow through. If your business involves follow-up selling after the show, you need to have a clean and efficient way to collect information about the people interested in your product. The basics are name, address, telephone and email. From there, your goal is gather information that will help you help the potential client. What type of product (project) are they considering? What is their time frame? What is their budget? Then have a plan to follow up with them.

Preparing for the New Year!

Is it Business as Usual Ladies?

THE HOLIDAY SEASON WILL IMPACT ON MOST WOMEN’S BUSINESSES. W HETHER YOU HAVE CHILDREN OR NOT, THERE ARE MANY COMPONENTS THAT AFFECT YOUR TIME AND RESULTS. This means you’ll need to work smarter in the hours you do have. You may have to start earlier or work later at night, depending on when you will be least interrupted. You may also need to think outside the square as to what your target market is looking at investing in at this time of year and why and how you can be the solution to their desires.

It’s great to have holidays, but if you have to work through them, or if like many of us are working part of the time, here are my top seven tips to assist you in working smarter and being more productive and get off to a great start in 2015.

1. Goal Set Correctly. Gain laser focus on your heart goal - something that really lights you up and stretches you. This is usually something that has nothing to do with your business – however, your business is the means via money and time to allow you to pursue it.

Ensure the way you work towards your goals are congruent with your values and that you set up sustainable steps that don’t overwhelm you. When this is all done correctly, everything else flows so much easier.

2. Communication. Inform your family and/or friends what you want to achieve in the holidays. If possible, let them know what’s in it for them; “I may need to work extra hours this week so we can go on holidays next week or earn extra income for holidays.” Paint the picture of what is in it for them.

3. Create the right environment. A clear desk and organised office will assist you in higher productivity however, the right mind environment is important too and for this you need to work without being constantly interrupted and/or feeling guilty. This is where the

communication step above is so vital. If your home office is not working for you over the holidays, organise to work in a library or café for some half or full days to pump out the work.

Look after you. If you have family home and lots of visitors, ensure you get some early nights when you can and take some time out for you. When your cup is full you are then fully there for others and your business – win, win!

Keep motivation levels up. Keep your vibration levels up over the holidays by reading or listening to inspiring books and audios. If possible, also meet socially with other business owners that you click with.

Planning. Good planning for the New Year comes in many forms. Plan on not doing everything on your own – become part of a group or mastermind and outsource where possible. Set up support systems at home and in the office. Map out your marketing campaigns for the full year and get in front of as many people as you can face to face. Stay on track and don’t get distracted by shiny objects. Stay true to your values, do what feels right and have fun along the way.

Accountability. Many business owners tend to put off what is boring or outside their comfort zone however, for business growth these tasks can be instrumental.

Get things done easily by making yourself accountable to the right person or group. Accountability, when used correctly is the most underestimated strategy when you work for yourself and absolutely vital for working smarter and achieving success.

Enjoy the holiday’s ladies and have a very happy and successful 2015.

PANTONE TAKES IT UPON ITSELF TO DETERMINE WHAT COLOR ALL OF US WILL HAVE IN OUR CLOSET FOR THE COMING SEASON. I do see the need for this, among retailers I suppose. However, lately it has taken on a life of its own, and if you don’t wear the color of the year you are just not ‘with it’.

This would be just fine, IF they would choose colors that are neutral and look great on all people. But, they do not. The 2015 Color of the Year, Marsala is a color that is not transferrable among all six skin tones. The best two skin tones that can wear it are Cool Red and Warm Tawny. Warm Orange would be the next one in line to be able to wear it. Cool Violet and Warm Golden will find it a difficult color to wear. Cool Rose just need to look somewhere else for their color of the year.

However, it does ‘go with’ many colors, so the Cool Violet and Warm Golden will find another color they can wear with it. Warm golden yellow will blend very well with it for the Warm Goldens. Cool evergreens and blues will spotlight it beautifully for Cool Violets to step into this season’s fashion color.

For the Cool Roses, if they can use it as an accent away from their face completely, teals and blues will hide the fact that the color just doesn’t flatter their skin tone.

At least when they display the entire color report, there are warm and cool colors for us to feel comfortable wearing.

Hemp’s Useful Textile Purposes

HEMP IS TODAY, A HARD TO GET ITEM. THE CONSUMER THAT ONCE PURCHASED ITEMS MADE FROM IT NOW CAN GET CLOTHES MADE FROM COTTON, PAPER MADE FROM TREES, MEDICINE MADE FROM MANMADE CHEMICALS, AND OIL SOURCED FROM FISH LIVERS. Textiles, paper, medicine and edible oils are but a few of the products that hemp provides; it is a simple-to-grow plant that can be cultivated on all continents save the Antarctic. Part of the whole enigma is that hemp is a plant of great varietal variability, lending itself even to experimentation as the great Russian plant geneticist Vavilov proclaimed. Thus it can produce tall slender stems with high cellulose fibre, or it can grow short and branched with many flowers which can contain high levels of THC and other cannabinoids. These compounds make some strains valuable to medicine and also appealing to marijuana smokers; most strains do not provide much in the way of medicine of drugs, but there is such a volume of literature on the marijuana culture that the general public at times associates all hemp with marijuana. There is also a large body of literature on hemp as an industrial plant, spanning centuries.

In the not too distant past, entire nations, empires to wit, depended on its availability; Russia, the chief supplier in the 17th-19th centuries, sold to both the British and the American navies. Britain and America themselves grew at that time no small amount, and both nation's legislators expressed alarm at the rate of expenditure on foreign hemp for their military. The superior quality and price of Russian hemp, however, ensured that Western powers relied on Russia's. Thus it was once the world's most traded commodity and cultivated nearly worldwide not only for its commercial value, but for the fact that many of its products, in addition to rope and sails, were necessary to survival; Thomas Jefferson, for instance, exhorted it be grown for the wealth and defense of the colonies. Over a century after his advice, the United States was eager to cultivate this crop and produced a film in WWII titled "Hemp for Victory." The threat to rope supplies in the Pacific prompted the legislature to make sure that American farmers were able and willing to plant hemp.

With the advent of metal ships running on steam and petroleum sails became almost obsolete, and abaca from the Philippines replaced hempen cordage on modern ships. Despite a dramatic downturn in

demand in the maritime industry, this plant continued to be grown into the 20th century, providing a range of products from paper to food. It excelled in both of these categories, as its long and strong fibres interlocked perfectly for long lasting paper (the oldest existing fragment of paper is 2,000 years old and contains hemp) and its Omega 3,6 & 9 rich seeds full of all essential amino acids were excellent for food.

Farmers also found the plant not only easy to grow in most countries of the world, but it acted as a natural pesticide (with one US cotton farmer sowing it on one third of his land at a time to rid the soil of pests).

Many changes in the law, however, in the 1930s to the 1960s in the US and other nations made hemp illegal, as these laws mistakenly lumped all forms of Cannabis sativain with high THC producing strains known as marijuana. A few nations continued to cultivate hemp; mainly China, which today profits from its policy. Western nations havehad a reawakening due to activists who struggled to make hemp not only legal but in some countries a subsidized species. These efforts have largely paid off, and there is presently a thriving hemp textile and hemp oil industry.

All of which might bode well for the US, as hemp, which was such a part of its history that the first US flag was made of it, can be grown in all 50 states. However, the present status of hemp is prohibitive, even with the recent ruling at the federal level that states may decide for themselves whether to allow its cultivation. So far, only two states have made cultivation legal: Colorado and Kentucky. Both were largely responsible for the change in the federal law, with farmers in the former sowing 60 acres of hemp in a field before the change; thus challenged, Washington lawmakers saw the gauntlet on the ground and conceded. Soon afterwards, a complex battle in the Kentucky House ensued, perhaps an epic note in American history, with both Republican senators, Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell, supporting the hemp issue in Washington, while a Democrat worked hard to keep it illegal. The governor promptly signed the bill, allowing the Bluegrass state, which was in the 19th and into the 20th century the hemp-basket of America, to regain its heritage.

While hemp is still illegal to cultivate in 48 states, and not yet produced in any quantity in Colorado or Kentucky, many American businesses manufacture hemp items, the largest sector being the hempseed oil industry, which sources its oil mainly from Canada, where farmers are profiting greatly from America's ban. A number of other firms manufacture hemp clothing, such as Minawear in Texas, which started in 1998 in California when the hemp movement was still rather small. The years of manufacturing hempen apparel by this and other companies has brought hemp to the awareness of the general public and has helped to restore the crop to legality in the US. Hemp was a major crop in many Renaissance countries, including Italy and the Netherlands. Not only was the textile used in art, but also the oil, which is clear and long-lasting. This last mentioned use of hemp is one that is not yet available on a commercial level, but is being researched by artists with a view to only bottling hemp oil as an art supply but also in finding the best variety among the thousands of varieties of hemp for this purpose, with the possibility that in the future it will replace linseed and safflower oils, both of which are prone to some degree of yellowing.

From the innovative to the well established, hemp has many uses, making it an essential part of the economy, as well as being a top choice ecologically, given the fact that it needs less water than cotton and also far less pesticides. Since there is no real reason not to cultivate it, and every reason to do so, it is the challenge of this present generation to reverse the mistakes of our predecessors and restore hemp to its place in our fields and the marketplace, hopefully succeeding and earning the respect of future generations.

LIFE HAS A WAY OF CHANGING THINGS AS WE GROW. EVERYTHING IS GOOD AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU JUST KNOW THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE YOU WANT TO DO. For Brian Wells, this change began with a trip into a new life.

Wells began his musical journey in 1988 when he studied voice lessons to prepare for a theater role.

In 1990, he opened Starliters Dance Studio and continues today as owner and teacher. He is a certified ballroom and Latin instructor who travels to exhibitions nationally with his dancers. He has received numerous awards for both himself and the studio.

In 2006, Wells found himself at a turning point in life that sent him to Nashville. More than listening, he felt the music and knew he wanted to write songs to move people. The singer/songwriter was born.

Wells writes songs that touch on spiritual and patriotic themes as well as playful humor. He wants to inspire hope and move his audience using his personal experiences and love of music. His song “My Best Friend” was written to his daughter and won an award at the Best New Up and Coming Songwriters competition in Nashville in 2007 – the first of many awards for his music. Other awards include Number One in Country by the Northwest Alabama Music Publishing Company, Runner Up award at the International Song of the Year Contest, Song of the Year Country Music Semi-Finalist Award, Song of the Year Christian Music Song Runner Up, Number One Country Rock Song by the Alabama Publishing Company, Number One Love Song by the Alabama Publishing Company and the list goes on. His songs have been successful on indie charts and in international markets.

When an opening act is needed from a local performer for a named country performer, Wells is that person in his area – they know he’ll get the audience going with a great show.
