Adrian Edward discovered music at 14 and from there became obsessed with everything about how to make it and play it. He put himself through high school 2 years earlier so he could go straight into his music education; then went straight into classical and later jazz training. He later took his creativity to the next stage by forming a band under his own name to showcase and put to work his skills not only as a performer but as an amazing songwriter. Today, he’s the music therapist at The Guild for Exceptional Children where he teaches children to use music as a means to communicate with the outside world. He also maintains a list of private students. And because he loves what he does he turns learning music into a full interactive experience. He’ll make you love learning.

From the Editor’s Desk Happy Holidays, All of Them!
This is the holiday season from Halloween to New Year’s Eve, we will have party after party for the next few months! We have a recipe for you to take to those parties, No Bake Nutella Cheesecake, oh please…I made the day after I got from Violeta. Goodness. Pure Goodness. This is a print it off and keep it recipe! We also have an answer to what to wear for the men that just want to wear jeans and tee shirts to parties; when did we, as women, start walking out the door with these said men in said outfit? There is nothing more insulting than for you to get all dressed up and then the significant other with whom you are going, chooses not to get all dressed up. (Take note, guys!) We have a spread from a New Zealand designer and a German-based outerwear company; this is why I love being on line, we can draw from so many different places! Skin care during or after cancer treatment, appropriate for an October issue, is discussed by an expert in the field, Charlotte Dorsey. We hope to have more submissions by her in the future, what knowledge. Imagine going to teach English in China for a year; and years later you are still there and performing on stage, meet Angela Efros! We hope you enjoy this issue, and that you are looking forward to each issue. Do you have a story? Do you have a new product that is just great, but you can’t afford that big marketing pitch? Please check out our prices, we are sure you can afford them! We also know that we promised you an article on Patch Adams, and children starting their own businesses…however, sometimes life just gets in the way! These articles will be coming in next month’s issue, we promise. Til Next Month… Carolyn Bendall

Kaliedescope literally changes colors with whatever it is paired with! How do they do that! The Arizona Necklace maybe silver, but along with the turquoise is brown; it mixes wonderfully with anything in a Warm skin tone’s wardrobe. CAbi has a jacket this season that is a great buy! The washable ponte animal print Estate Jacket is amazing and comfortable. No fear, the brown can go with all skin tones, see how they have it paired with wine. The Asymetrical white cotton shirt (Chic Shirt) is just fun, also shown with the sweater. And, their paneled cowl neck top (Overlay Tee) is high on my list, all personalities can wear this top with complete coverage, as long as they are a Cool skin tone, because that is the only color it comes in and it will not flatter a warm skin tone. Warm Tawny’s might, might be able to get away with it, but definitely not a Warm Golden or Warm Orange. To find a consultant near you: http://www.cabionline.com O c t o b e r 2 0 1 4 | 12

NO BAKE NUTELLA CHEESECAKE By Violeta Vasilopoulou
THE ART OF PASTRY CAN SOMETIMES BE TRICKY, ESPECIALLY DURING THE HOLIDAYS WHEN WE ALL HAVE LOADS OF COOKING TO DO & RUN A THOUSAND ERRANDS. So during the years, I have mastered a few dessert
recipes that I know that will work out great and avoid any unpleasant last minute surprises. Holidays and the colder weather in general make me always crave for something chocolaty and there is nothing chocolatier than Nutella… I don’t have a problem diving directly into the Nutella jar but I have found and tested a few Nutella recipes that are mouthwatering and I decided to share my favorite “No Bake Nutella Cheesecake” recipe with all of you and urge you to try it out and add it to your dessert table during the Holidays. Trust me you want regret it and it will be a definite crowd pleaser… I found this recipe a few years back through my baking addiction, my go to food blog for yummy dessert recipes that never fail to please me and my guests. I have made it so many times that I have slightly adjusted it to meet my preferences. The Oreo cookie crumbs create the perfect base for the creamy, fluffy Nutella and cream cheese mixture that I have to restrain myself from eating it with a spoon straight from the mixing bowl! You can choose if you want to add and which garnish to add and serve it in beautiful wine or martini glasses and serve it during the Holidays after a festive dinner. You will definitely win some great hostess points! NO BAKE NUTELLA CHEESECAKE Servings: 4-6 servings Prep Time: 15 minutes Ingredients: For the Crust 12 Oreo Chocolate Cookies, crushed into crumbs 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted For the Filling 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 2/3 of a cup Nutella 1 teaspoon of cognac 1 (8 ounce) tub frozen whipped topping, thawed

No Bake Nutella Cheesecake (continued) For the Garnish whipped cream, optional white & dark chocolate shavings, optional caramelized, chopped hazelnuts, optional DIRECTIONS: 1. In a medium bowl, stir together the Oreo cookie crumbs and the melted butter. Evenly divide the crumbs between your individual serving glasses and press them in the bottom of the glasses in order to form a crust base. 2. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer beat the cream cheese and Nutella until smooth. Add the cognac and mix to combine them. Using a rubber spatula, fold in the whipped topping until they are blended well and no streaks remain. 3. Evenly pipe or spoon the filling in the individual serving glasses. Cover them with plastic wrap and refrigerate them for at least 2 hours before serving. 4. If you wish, you can garnish them with additional whipped cream, white & dark chocolate shavings, and/or caramelized, chopped hazelnuts.

Life Image – The Written Memory
The hand written letter has come to near extinction due to electronic communication. Christmas cards and other seasonal or occasion cards are now done via automated businesses from Walmart to the Direct Sales company, Send Out Cards. They tout the ease of entering a data base (Send Out Cards) to the personalization of the card. One can still do the personalization without sacrificing the hand written note. Choosing your own family photo to be the cover of the card gives the personalization; however, your added quick note in your handwriting gives the card ‘I care’ persona. There is something special about a hand written letter or note. We don’t go back and look at emails, social media posts, or text messages to bring back a memory; we handle a hand written letter. We pull out the shoe box and go through the hand drawn cards by our children or grandchildren; we hold them, smell them, hold them close to our heart. There is something special today about the hand written letter. It shows that you have gone the extra mile to think of that person. Even within business, a hand written thank you note is noticed and held closer than the thank you email or e-card. If you just can’t grasp the idea of purchasing a card (they are getting more and more expensive), or you just are not computer savvy enough to work with a template, or you never send cards at anytime, then at least think about preserving your life for those who will come after you. Letters are one way that future generations see into the past. Another is through diaries or journals. If you have a hard time with journals then siimply set aside time every day to answer the questions that we have attached.
Journals can reflect your personality. This is one from Barnes & Noble, Dr. Who's TARDIS

Wellness: Stress Less for the Holidays By Kally Efros
ONE OF THE GREAT BEAUTIES OF OUR WORLD IS THE CHANGING OF SEASONS, GIVING VARIETY TO LIFE. SEVERAL THINGS HAPPEN IN OCTOBER AS WE MOVE FULL SWING INTO THE HOLIDAY SEASON. The weather
starts to turn colder as fall blows in full swing. The days are shorter and we all spend more time indoors. Fall is the time of harvest, marking the end of the growing season. The changing leaves signal a time to let go and prepare for winter and the holidays. This year Fall Equinox occurred on September 22 which happens when the day is 12 hours and the night is 12 hours. From this point forward our days are getting shorter. On an energetic level in Chinese medicine, autumn is represented by metal, which includes the lung and large intestine meridians. Autumn is time to clear out negativity and let go like the trees let go of their leaves. Metal represents stability, structural foundation, bendability, discernment, strength, and refinement. For many, fall brings another season – the cold and flu season. There are many reasons for this, less vitamin D from spending more time indoors, all work and no play, less fresh air, more processed foods at work or school, more junk food and candy, and kids gathering in classrooms. Science tells us it is not the cooler temperatures that being the cold and flu, as some have been led to believe. Nature tells us to turn inward and let go. Our holiday season is a time to get together with family and friends, reconnect with old friends, and think about what is important to us. It is full of tradition and ceremony which bonds us together as families and communities. Sadly, for many it is a time of sickness, busyness, stress, depression and anxiety. If you are finding yourself dreading the whirlwind of the last quarter, then do something different this season. Here are 10 easy steps that can help you make the most of fall and the holiday season. Step 1 Evaluate last year. What did you actually do? What did you like? What didn’t you like? What are you dreading right now? What do you put off? Did you spend most of winter fighting illness? What is one small change that would bring you more peace and happiness?

Step 2 Wish - what is your ideal fall and holiday season? Don’t hold back here. Write down everything you wish could happen and that you dream and imagine about. Write down your standards. This doesn’t mean that these are executable ideas. So remember if you have an expectation that isn’t getting met, you are setting yourself up for failure. The idea behind this step is to understand your wants. Often we have wants and no one realizes it is even important and rejection sets in. So don’t hold back, write down your expectations and wishes. There is probably a huge gap between your expectations and what really happens. The goal is to get these two closer together. Step 3 Why? Why do you want to change? Change in patterns, traditions and habits can be difficult. Knowing and understanding your ‘why’ can help you say focused. Step 4 Learn to follow just one rule – it is like a magic wand to help you transform the holidays. Your new rule…..
KISS Keep It Simple and Special Step 5 Share this information with your significant other and family. Get their input. Have them evaluate last year. What are their wishes and expectations? Why do they want things different? Talk it over. Step 6 Plan and Budget, keeping in mind the KISS rule. First start with your wishes, then move on to what is realistic? What are you really going to do – remember “Keep it Simple and Special” and narrow down the list. You may want to add a new thing every year.

Stress Less for the Holidays (Continued) I realized one year that while I loved sending out Christmas cards to my friends, it was a huge task and stressor to me. So I let it go some years. I love getting cards and sending them. But to keep things simple and special, sometimes I have to let that task go. My family at home is more important that sending out cards. So now if I have time I send out cards and if I don’t, I’m okay with that. Now that you have narrowed down your wishes and expectations, compare that to your list from step 1. Make a new list of what you want to do this holiday season. Make a budget and stick to it. Look at what you spent last year and adjust as needed. As you plan ahead for next year, save a little each month for the end of the year and avoid holiday debt. Step 7 Prioritize, make a list of what is really important – the must do’s. Then don’t let anything get in the way of this. You will probably have more on your list than what you can feasibly do. List things out in order of importance to you and your family. Using the KISS rule will help – simple and special. This will give you time to really enjoy some important and special activities with family and friends. Step 8 Enjoy each and every day now that you have a plan. Celebrate the holidays with more joy and leave the stress behind. Remember why you are celebrating and have fun. Don’t spend so much of your time planning and preparing that you don’t have time to enjoy. Step 9 Stay healthy, many people get so busy they eat out more and eat more junk and processed food. When you are trying to get so much done, you might find yourself relying on caffeinated beverages. Holidays come fully loaded with candy, treats and desserts at every party and gathering. Just say no to most of that and make yourself some better alternatives. Make sure you follow the basics of health and wellness. If you need help with that, come on over to my website. Water is just as important in the fall and winter as it is in the summer and should be your primary drink. You need fuel to keep you going: veggies and fruit – a balanced diet. Plan time to prepare healthy meals and enjoy them with your family. Keep moving and exercising. Exercise cuts down on depression and anxiety, gives you more energy, and boosts your immune system. Get your rest. Avoid food and candy you don’t want in the first place. Don’t eat it just because it is there. Put some limits on sugar consumption. When you eat sugar, your immune system drops down and you are more susceptible to whatever is going around. We don’t hand out candy for Halloween; I buy erasers and other little goodies like glow-in-the-dark bugs to hand out. My kids can eat whatever they want on Halloween and then we clean it out and get rid of

Stress Less for the Holidays (Continued) most of it. There are tons of desserts and ideas all over the internet that are healthier for you. Try a few. Take your vitamins and use some alternative remedies like herbs and essential oils to help prevent sickness. Get your sunshine and get fresh air when you can. Studies suggest that Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, is so essential to our immune system that when we hide out indoors, we weaken our defenses. If you can’t get enough sunshine, consider a Vitamin D supplement. Wash your hands often, with just some good soap and water. Evidence suggests that antibacterial soaps and lotions may not be good for your health and that simple soap and water really does cut back on germs. Talk to a wellness expert to get more great ideas to help you and your family stay healthy. Avoid overeating and overdrinking and don’t starve yourself in anticipation of a large meal. One improvement I made in this area was Thanksgiving. There are so many favorite foods to eat. I started preparing smaller meals that were different each time, around Thanksgiving, rather than one big feast with all my favorites, feeling sick after stuffing myself and exhausted from the preparation while other played. Moderation my friends! Step 10 Wrap up and repeat. While you’re in the holiday spirit, it is so easy to write down a few notes and evaluate what you enjoyed most and what you want to change for next year. Update addresses from cards and letters. Record the highlights of the year and the holidays in a family or personal journal. Get rid of broken decorations and clutter. Just remember: evaluate, wish, why, KISS, share, plan and budget, prioritize, enjoy, stay healthy, wrap up and repeat. If you still find yourself feeling the blues, get some help. Talk to a friend. We can carry a lot of baggage from our past that is connected to the holidays. There are a lot of resources out there from journal writing, hypnosis, therapy, and energy work like the LifeLine Technique. Don’t sweep your feelings under the carpet. Acknowledge your feelings and work through them. Focus on what is good in

Stress Less for the Holidays (Continued) your life and what you have to be grateful for. Volunteer and help someone else. Focus on your spiritual beliefs. Reach out. Set aside any differences with family that may be keeping you away. Here are some holiday tips that I have learned: •
•
•
• • • • •
• •
I have a holiday binder. I record budgets, wish lists, gifts I have given (so I don’t give the same thing twice), memories, favorite family recipes with a shopping list and my plan. It is command central. When you put together your plan for the holidays, trim it down again, if needed. Make sure you have time to enjoy yourself. Holiday Cards: I only send if I have time and I try to start early with this. At the end of the year I update addresses of friend and relatives and start my holiday card list. Sometimes I update everyone with a social media post from our family. I keep a digital address book and update it as the year goes on. Stock the pantry with staples and spices early so I’m not running out to the store for last minute needs. Plan your meals ahead so you can take advantage of specials. Don’t overdo the decorations and all the time needed to put out decorations and then put them away. Shop early and take advantage of sales and items in stock. Get some Santa helpers, your local shops may assist you with with shopping and services. Hire teens to help clean. Wrap gifts as you buy them to avoid an all-nighter wrapping party (I’ve done that one too many times). Be sure you write this down in your book and put a tag on the gift that won’t fall off with who it is for. Learn to say no. Take 5, as they say. Take time to breathe, to just sit still without distractions. Meditate and/or listen to calming music. Holiday music is always so wonderful, I wait all year to listen to it. Let nature guide you this season, just like the trees are letting go of their leaves, let go of some of your expectations and busyness this year. Turn inward and plan for relaxing days ahead. Let go of waste and old, and be open to new experiences. Get rid of clutter and things you no longer need. Breathe in deeply the crisp autumn air and feel energized. Then when you move into the holidays, you’ll be more refreshed and have clarity of mind. Enjoy the season!

A wintery Saturday in December brings images of a Dickensesque Christmas as carolers stroll along serenading shoppers who are taking a break from their shopping with a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Sitting outside a quaint local coffee shop watching friends and neighbors pass by is the place to see old trains and a picturesque park full of young families. Then there are the Collierville Town Square summertime Thursday night concerts which draw hundreds of guests, young and old alike, to gather in the park and enjoy music and small town charm. From the Civil War walking trail telling the story of the Battle of Collierville to the quaint boutiques and gift shops that line the Town Square, this charming town has managed to blend the old with the new in a way few towns have been able to manage. There are restaurants and antique stores perfect for browsing and then there are photography studios, personal training facilities and a yoga studio bringing folks from all walks of life into the historic district of Collierville. “It is the mix of both businesses and visitors in historic downtown Collierville that keep this area vibrant and alive,” says Laura Todd, Director of Main Street Collierville, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote and preserve the historic downtown area. “Our downtown is the heartbeat of Collierville and the mix of activities, people, and history is what makes it an interesting place to work, live and visit.” There are beautiful churches nearly a century and a half old scattered around the town square – one is the town museum, another an event venue and two more which still house worshipers each Sunday morning, sitting in the same pews and looking through the same stained glass windows that their great-great grandparents did just after the Civil Historic structures dot the Collierville Town Square.

Should You Push Your Kids Into Piano Lessons? By Adrian Edward
Photos by TheMusicWorkshop.com
Every Parents Dream THERE IS HARDLY A PARENT THAT DOESN’T SHARE THE DESIRE THAT THEIR CHILDREN HAVE MUSIC IN THEIR LIFE .
I
find that intentions are usually good ones and ones of genuine concern and desire that their children have a complete experience in life that includes learning music, in many cases, learning how to play the piano. The problem arises when we ask the question, “when is the fine line between encouragement and forcing a child to play the piano?” That’s not an easy question to answer but one that deserves some attention. The reason I find this question so important is because there are so many adults and parents that I speak to that retain a negative experience in regards to their own parents forcing and pressuring them to learn the piano when they were kids. I have a huge problem with this for many reasons but mainly for the fact that because of those actions of pressure, a wonderful experience of learning an instrument and playing the piano has become a traumatic memory that they will carry around for the rest of their lives. This is a tragedy since music is one of the most wonderful gifts imaginable and the last thing that learning the piano should do is create bad memories.
How Do We Know? It is no secret that most kids need some form of encouragement in order to do anything. Unless it’s video games or dessert, we have to offer a friendly and encouraging push. But the question is how do we tell the difference between encouraging and genuinely offering a slight push to keep the child on track? I will try to answer that question based on the experiences I’ve had with families and please feel free to add your own thoughts in a comment below. We could all learn how to better deal with this difficult topic. In my experience, a child, any child, is not typically going to be super excited about practicing or learning anything. That’s just the reality for most of us. Yes, some kids have almost an innate desire to learn and study but let’s face it, which rarely happens. The more typical case is that we, as parents, have to push and encourage our kids to do their homework, go to school and learn the things that are required of them. With the piano, since it is an elective subject that they commonly learn outside of school, I think the push factor can be a little less while still remaining encouraging. Telling them to sit down for an hour at the piano to practice is not the way to go. Instead, small 10-minute sessions, I find, work much better O c t o b e r 2 0 1 4 | 49

Piano Lessons (Continued)
and this allows a child to not associate sitting at the piano to practice as a big chore. Keeping a piano practice chart and offering small rewards for a full weeks practice is also a great way to encourage children. If however, after a few months of piano lessons, you see that they are still dreading sitting at the piano, I think it is okay to take a break and come back to the talk of lessons the following year. This is the critical point that you don’t want to push beyond and where a lot of people develop that resentment towards learning the piano.
Is Piano the Best Instrument to Learn First? Another comment I hear often is that parents want their child to take piano lessons because they feel that piano is the best instrument to start with. Although I am partial to the piano, I am not necessarily sure this is entirely true. While the piano does offer the possibility to more easily become familiar with harmony and sight reading more than one line of music, the myth that it is the best way to start learning music is just that, a myth. The truth is that a child can have a great musical education while beginning to learn just about any instrument, it doesn’t have to be the piano. It can be the guitar, violin, cello or clarinet. So, in my opinion, if a child is resisting the piano, ask if they would be interested in a different instrument altogether. You may be surprised at how interested they are in music, just not specifically the piano.

Using Talent to Have a Happy Career
Diane Lawrence has a talent for knitting. She knew it. Her family knew it. For years she would knit items, then stash them away awaiting the next baby shower announcement or new baby in the family. As she pondered her talents and her growing inventory, her thoughts took her to considering retail. Her talent, she believes, is from God; and she was hiding it away when there many that could benefit, including her Royal Collection Blanket with name embroidered. financially. Turning talent into income is the stuff of dreams, and Lawrence was going to embark on that dream. Her family slightly chided as she searched for the store front, but then when the business started coming in they understood her passion. She is the only one that does the work. She dreams of the day that she can truly give back by hiring others to help with production and to be able to have the inventory and enough income that she can truly give back. She wants to see her small business get to the landmark place that she can give away one item per item bought. So many babies in need of the warmth her collection provides, and she wants to take care of them. At any given day you will see her in her shop; and she will be knitting. She is her factory. Her days bounce from cashier, to factory worker, to saleswoman, to designer; and it all makes her happy. A customer walks in sees a layette and wants it in a different color, she accommodates. Another customer walks in and wants a sweater in a different size, she accommodates. Want it slightly different in style, she can accommodate, because she makes her own patterns. Skin Care Within Your Shape Wear
Philippe Lahmani has developed a combination of skin care within the shape wear; and he kept the shape comfortable. If you have tried on shape wear and needed a Victorian Fainting Couch, then you need to try this shape wear. I was very hesitant myself, because,
I’ve done the ridiculous shape wear. I was also very hesitant because he did have me try this product in August in Memphis TN. The hottest, most humid time of year in the Mid-South. Result? Comfortable. I warned him that I would need the largest size he has because I am used to what I have purchased in the past. He promptly sent me a true to size body shaper. I hesitated. I contemplated not trying it on because I knew there was going to be a struggle. I was amazed. This product shapes nicely, fits without constricting. Now, does it take you down a size, No. But, then neither do Sculpt Tights: Slimming Benefit: Caffeine combined the other brands, they just shove it up and out. (Let’s be with Cedrol stimulate fat burning, help efficiently reduce the appearance of cellulite. honest.) With this body shaper, there was no pushing everything up and out. Just a soft line that made knits look so Skin Restructuring Benefit: Shea Butter, Brown Algae and Inca Inchi Oil nourish & improve the skin much nicer. elasticity leaving skin softer.

The piece that I really liked, the arm shapers. Yes, arm shapers. They help tone the arms a bit. Now, did I see a major difference? No. Did I feel a difference. Yes. What do I mean by that? My arms were softer, hence the skin care within the fabric. I have the shapers sitting by my desk so that I will think to put them on. These garments are meant to be worn for about 8 hours or so a day. And, not to sleep in, they are meant for you to be active in them, moving about your day. My arms were not tired after a day at the computer, that was a big plus. Now, about the heat. Didn’t really notice it, except with the arm toners, in the heat of the day. But by then, I had had them on for nearly 7 hours. The body shpaer did not add heat to my day, either. He smiled when I told him, “Ah, you will trust a Frenchman from now on!” Tone Sleeves: 1. Rosehip Oil: stimulates collagen and restores skin’s elasticity 2. Root Extract: improves microcirculation and protect the veins 3. Algae Extract: rich in ceramid it facilitates the hydration of the skin 4. Green Coffee: anti-cellulite action, ” fat-burning” effect"
The leggings are called “Second Skin” because that is what they are and I could see those coming in handy in the very cold, even if Lahmani does say that they are not hot. But, I do want to warn, as I always do, leggings are not pants. One must wear a tunic, at minimum with leggings. There is a high waist body shaper for evening dresses, especially the clingy ones.
Lahmani has been asked if the garments are good for exercise wear and he warns that they really are only for light everyday wear. Yoga may be okay, however, anything vigorous or strenuous would probably not have any added benefit wearing the garments. The skin care that is in the garments does wash out after about 20 or so washes; however the garment is still a top notch body shaper. At this time the shapers are found in select spas and salons and on line, at http://www.shapeandslim.com

The Gifted Groove of Life By Maricia Sherman
WELL, IT'S GETTING CLOSER TO THAT TIME OF THE YEAR. THE HOLIDAYS! It seems as if the year just flies by
and the gift giving season descends upon us quicker each year. Soon, many of us will begin shopping well before Thanksgiving and some of us will make that last dash on Christmas Eve. Either way, gift giving and the holidays go hand in hand. We will purchase those special items for significant others, candy and cookies for office parties, and well-meaning pictured cards for family members. We will decorate our homes and plan for special holiday family meals all while exchanging those beautifully wrapped gifts. No doubt these treasured moments will continue to be passed down for generations to come. As a little girl, I can remember those precious traditions. One Christmas in particular, I wanted a very special gift that I had seen in a local toy store. I remember writing it down and handing my mother my one item list. I knew she could not afford the rather expensive toy but it was Christmas, right? Tragically, a few weeks before the holiday our family received unfortunate news. A beloved family member had been rushed to the hospital and had died an unexpected death. While as a child I didn't quite understand all of it, I knew that Christmas morning would probably not be the one that I had such high expectations for. Needless to say, I was selfishly disappointed at the thought that the holiday would not be its usual festive occasion. Although Christmas morning I did unwrap that wonderful toy, it was over those few weeks that I grew to understand the value of one of the greatest gifts we have been given-LIFE. Even though my family attempted to keep those traditions during that holiday, it was obvious that something was missing and the selfishness I had originally experienced drifted away into compassion. The more I watched my family grieve, the more I understood that an unforgettable voice had been lost and even as a child I wished I had spent more time enjoying that gifted life. As humans, we all too often forget that what we have been given so beautifully wrapped in the form of life is simply a marvelous gift. Not only is it a gift but it has added characters that bring even more value. What characters am I referencing? I am speaking of your unique talents and abilities or what I affectionately call your "groove". I believe that we each possess abilities worthy of renowned notability.

The Gifted Groove of Life (Continued) Furthermore, that each of us has been given a "bright light" and in the same manner that we share those holiday gifts we must be even more hard pressed to share our gifted lives with one another in our own incomparable way. In doing this, we give the most needed gift of all, ourselves. I do admit that opening oneself up and sharing freely can be scary but I assure that your contribution to the world is needed. Love, devotion, commitment, and relentless passion are all ingredients to assist you in confidently sharing your amazing life. Let your life be stirred with these ingredients inspiring someone else to realize that their “bright light” is never to be placed under a lampshade. What you possess is uniquely designed to impact and motivate the world around you. You are good at what you do for a purpose. There is only one of you. This means that you have something unique to offer and if you just let it lie dormant inside of you, the world is robbed of its unique value and creativity. Unwrap that creativity by making http://www.hergroove.com yourself available to your surroundings and sharing your gift. Be aware that your life is the ultimate gift and no greater gift can someone give than that of themselves. Think on it. Twenty years from now will you regret not pursuing your groove, not celebrating the gift of life with others on a deeper level? Then ask yourself, why am I not celebrating? Why am I not pursing building a legacy that will outlive myself and leave my fingerprints stamped upon all within my reach? Will the world know you were here? This holiday season I urge you to consider ways to give more of yourself. Consider more ways to share your unique gifts that lie inside you. Allow the world around you to see your talents in a loving and special way. Find the heartbeat and rhythm of your community and groove to its beat by joining in on community efforts of improvement. Take time to enjoy the sparkles of life. Embed yourself into someone else’s world by giving of your time, talent, and treasure. After all, it’s this process that makes the world go around and it is this action that will continue to bring harmony and balance to our universe. Positive action and positive thoughts are the perfect combined force against negativity and discouragement. It is time to take action. Take your place in the fulfillment and celebration of it all understanding that the most exciting gift you could give is to share your energy, your groove, and your inner self with society. Fly toward the window of opportunity to share more than the usual presents and gifts this holiday. Create opportunities to give of yourself. My wish for you as we embark upon the last quarter of the year is that you would celebrate all that you have been created to be! End this year with fireworks comprised of service, giving, and intentional acts of kindness. Touching it in a manner that only your unique individuality could do! Stamping it with your fingerprint. Firmly grasp the realization that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are a special

This Lady Means Business! By Guy Holland (reprinted from http://www.ultra-fitmagazine.co.uk/)
HER LOOK-A-LIKE COUSIN CAME RUNNER UP IN THE LAST SERIES OF T HE A PPRENTICE AND HAS BECOME SOMETHING OF A ‘ TABLOID MEDIA BABE ’, BUT NOW NICOLA KALOZOIS IS GAINING SIGNIFICANT ATTENTION IN HER OWN RIGHT. Nicola's own entrepreneurial skills and business drive led her down the path of early selection for the famed TV series back in 2007 but she realised the process and environment wasn't for her, pulled out and has been happy to concentrate on building up her Branded Ego line of fitness and leisure clothing and enhancing her business skills away from TV cameras and intrusive media attention.
BUT IT WAS ONLY SEVEN YEARS AGO THAT NICOLA WAS TOLD SHE COULD BE FACING A LIFETIME OF INACTIVITY THANKS TO A SERIOUS NECK CONDITION. AN ACCUMULATION OF TRAUMAS TO THE CERVICAL SPINE REACHED A HEAD WHEN SHE WOKE UP ONE MORNING IN TREMENDOUS PAIN AND WITH AN ALMOST COMPLETELY PARALYSED LEFT ARM.
With her family's 100 year history in the clothing trade it is very much in her blood and she is determined to carry on the fine traditions of her forbears. But Nicola is not just about business - if she was this feature would not appear between the covers of ultra-FIT. Not content just to bring her extensive range of quality garments to market, she has committed to immersing herself in the fitness industry, "If you are going to talk the talk you have to walk the walk", said Nicola in a tone of absolute commitment and total belief. "Over the last year I've become more and more exposed to the sports, leisure and fitness industry as the elements of my business have fallen in to place. I have been dealing with everybody from photographers, fitness PRs and writers, fitness models, trainers, sportspeople and coaches to magazine publishers and event organsisers. I was so encouraged and inspired by so many of these characters that I felt like I must become part of this world rather than just sell into it". So if the mother of two didn't have enough going on she has added goals to her already extensive list including competing in fitness/ figure competitions and taking part in 2015 Fit Factor in India and the UK. "I love the idea of Fit Factor. It seems like a great concept and a format that allows the personality and whole rounded person to shine, not just the body and I think that suits me! In some respects it does look like I am heaping further pressures and commitments on myself outside of what is already a massive and exciting business challenge with Branded Ego, but in a strange way I believe it actually helps. By entering the realms of hard training and strict dieting I have no choice but to build firm O c t o b e r 2 0 1 4 | 68

Then of course there are the physical and mental benefits; I feel good about myself, I feel sharper, healthier and more able to tackle whatever ups and downs come my way on a daily basis". And Nicola knows a bit about ups and downs. However laudable, there may be nothing particularly remarkable about a busy young mother launching a business and simultaneously committing herself to honing a new body and taking to the stage. But it was only seven years ago that Nicola was told she could be facing a lifetime of inactivity thanks to a serious neck condition. An accumulation of traumas to the cervical spine reached a head when she woke up one morning in tremendous pain and with an almost completely paralysed left arm. Three herniated (bulging) discs were identified. With her neck immediately braced and the arm placed in a sling, treatment options were analysed and discussed. “I was told I would face years of treatment and intensive rehabilitation. As an active, entrepreneurial businesswoman and dedicated mother to two young children this was a nightmare outlook. I couldn’t drive, I couldn’t work and I was unable to care for my children or household properly. The only way had to be forwards and upwards.” One year on from the initial problem surgeons recommended the removal of the discs, fusing the spaces together with rods and plates whilst hoping to avoid the attendant risks of spinal cord damage, infection, cerebrospinal fluid leak and damage to the trachea or major blood vessels of the anterior spine. The best outlook seemed to be a managed life of caution and frustration for a lady who had always enjoyed sports, action and activity. She became a mother at 20 when she and her husband brought daughter Charlotte into the world, followed five years later by their son Finley, and just when she was looking forward to resuming a sporty and active life circumstances seriously conspired to work against her. "It was a massive blow but it really is a case of rolling all those cliches into one about making obstacles stepping stones and finding a way over, under or around walls if you can't smash through them, and following Churchill's great remark that, 'If you find yourself in Hell keep on going'. If you really think about it there isn't much choice. Certainly not if you want to stay buoyant and regain your quality of life. Of course you don't want to do anything crazy and make it all so much worse, however you can set goals and aspire to positive outcomes and perhaps

SO NICOLA DETERMINED TO START HER OWN COMPANY, BASED ON WHAT SHE KNEW BEST - CLOTHING DESIGN - CREATING HER OWN STYLES AND MANUFACTURING FOR DANCE SCHOOLS, COLLEGES, BOUTIQUES AND CELEBRITIES.
become more driven than you might have been."Having weighted up all the odds and spoken at length to family and friends, Nicola opted to pursue alternative treatment with osteopath Mr. Vish Tanna and Consultant Anesthetist & Pain Specialist Dr. Patrick McGowan. Every two months for three years Nicola endured cervical epidural steroid injections directly into her neck. And up to four times a month she also had acupuncture treatment. Additionally Nicola swam daily, studied Reiki and attended meditation classes. “I had been categorically told that, without the insertion and fusing of plates, I would never be able to even lift a kettle with my left arm. Well, there are no plates inside me and I’m moving the kind of gym weights around that I’d never have thought possible even if I’d never suffered an injury in my life! I was unable to work for a few years and that added financial pressures and anxieties and divorce over this time added considerably to the general stress and strain. But having goals definitely helps any recovery period. It prevents wallowing in the present which might not be so great, and sets the mind on a better future and provides purpose and impetus." So Nicola determined to start her own company, based on what she knew best – clothing design. Creating her own styles and manufacturing for dance schools, colleges, boutiques and celebrities. She established an office near her home, her father Chris Kalozois came out of retirement to help and support on a daily basis and the journey from inactivity and partial paralysis to the realization of her goal was complete in September 2012 when Branded Ego was born. So far the momentum she was so keen to harness has taken Nicola's Branded Ego range from the design, fabric sourcing and manufacture stage into major high street retailers in little more than a year. In May she launched the Branded Ego men’s range. Added to that she is committing to serious twice daily gym training and has even ventured into bike motocross! "Motocross is amazing and I love it. My son is really keen and his father is very much involved in the sport, so I thought I'd find out what it was all about. But I can’t be stupid and take undue risks so I am as careful and sensible about it as I can be!” Her intention to get truly fit and become an authentic member of the health and fitness community has seen her talk to and absorb as much as she can from top trainers. She has adopted appropriate diets and is training up to seven days a week, sometimes twice a day starting with fasted cardio at 6am and weights sessions in the evening. “I’ve been so lucky to meet, talk to and be inspired by the likes of Joey Bull, Shaun Stafford, Kris Gethin, Maria Ahlberg, Mark Hoban, Ronnie Coleman, Drew Neal, and Melissa Haywood amongst others. To be part of their world and the wider fitness and leisure industry is a privilege as far as I’m concerned and I’m totally focused on becoming a successful figure within it – literally and in business terms!” A recent trip to Bodypower India and her presence at this spring’s Bodypower at Birmingham’s NEC has only served to provide even more inspiration. “I have made it my mission to train hard, to qualify in fitness and aspire to live up to the standards of some of the people I’ve been lucky enough to meet over

By Gemma Bolton (buff-beauty.com) Branded Ego is a funked up fitness – and soon to be lounge-wear – line, also retailing nutrition and accessories products. The collection takes its cue from the current trend for graphic prints and logos, balanced with its classic approach to cut and fit. So, taking a closer look at the products, I decided to team a stylishly simple BE FIT loose tank vest with their playful yoga leggings - playful, because of the flash of purple at the waist. my Favourite My favourite piece from the collection is the Expect the Unexpected Yoga Style Crop Tee, pictured here in grey and also available in ceramic (teal) or grape (a purpletoned pink). Now, this is a super-sized number, great for dance workouts, slung on as a post yoga cover-up, or worn with skinny jeans as day-wear. Just like I’ve done here…

It’s a Wonderful Life: Jewelry From the 1940s By Melinda Lewis
THE YEAR WAS 1946, AND THE NOW MUCH-BELOVED CHRISTMAS CLASSIC, "IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE," STARRING JAMES STEWART AND DONNA REED, WAS RELEASED TO THE A MERICAN PUBLIC— A A MERICAN TALE OF SELF- DISCOVERY AND GOODNESS. Ironically, in the post-war era when the country’s optimism for feel-good movies should logically be embraced, the movie was a box-office failure. However, post-war optimism wasn’t abated in fashion or adornment; women welcomed it after many years of priority restrictions, war-imposed manufacturing laws, and human determination of self-expression. Women who had earned more wages than any other time in history had come into a sense of financial independence and self-expression. Fashion and jewelry were ripe for a new revolution. Looking Back The years prior to 1946 had brought about a pent up demand for increased interest in costume jewelry, as war-restricted utilitarian fashions, in both Europe and America, lacked many desirable design elements deemed too costly or rationed for the war effort. Everything from buttons to hem-lines were Pin. c. 1940s pin with perforated brass backing, designed with wood bead dangles. measured, counted, and regulated, leading to a dearth of fashion designs. Women were desperate for creative adornment to enhance the
simple styles. In the spirit of can-do American ingenuity, war-time patriotism, and a bit of a profit motive, the American costume jewelry industry rallied to bring a variety of innovative materials and designs to the public; manufacturers used everything from cork, macaroni, wood, shells, and newly discovered yet-to-be restricted, pre-priority plastics. The Turning Point The transition back to pre-war manufacturing materials and design took several years. Contrary to popular belief that most sterling costume jewelry* was made only during the war from 1939 to 1945, significant metal restrictions were enforced until 1949. Many companies who made cast jewelry prior to the war, continued to manufacturer in silver due to limited availability of metals used in cast settings. (Note: The government fined jewelry manufacturers for disobeying the order that remained in place for strategic stockpiling of tin, an essential metal used in “white metal” jewelry.)

However, as the post-war optimism began to take hold and more of the war-priority materials restrictions were abated (especially priority metals), the full palette of possibility became once again available. Gone were the simple craft-style or hand-made jewelry designs, replaced by more complex metal and rhinestone designs. In 1947, Dior led the field in a new embrace of feminine fashion and the jewelry industry followed suit as materials became available. New and far more elegant designs began to emerge in the fashion and costume jewelry marketplace. Styles impossible to execute during the war, such as intricate filigree work, known as “Contour Jewelry,” which allowed the gown to show through the jewelry entered the market again. Necklaces became increasingly bold and expressive, while bangle bracelets were worn in multiple. O c t o b e r 2 0 1 4 | 76

It’s a Wonderful Life: Jewelry From the 1940s (Continued) Unlike purchases made during the war, women began to purchase complete sets or parures strikingly different from those made during the war. Women began to enjoy the look of intricately hand-set bejeweled pieces that were impossible to make when rhinestone supplies from Czechoslovakia had ceased due to the war. Additionally, new elements and inspiration from the exquisite jewels of the Orient and other exotic lands found its way to jewelry store countertops. (Side Note) Post-war, manufacturers such a Kramer Jewelry turned to Austria for rhinestone supplies, but the cost and quality were not up to pre-war standards. By 1949, Christmas advertisements featured bright sparkling jewelry in white metal with rhodium finishes. A new optimism took hold as the country

entered into a new decade. Unrestricted by the conditions of recent years, designers were pushing the boundaries with new textures, colors and designs. It was time for a “wonderful life.” The glory years of the 1950s were about to begin. *This does not include all sterling jewelry, but rather styles and motifs associated with the 1940s. Cool Skin Tones
Oh, the mistakes we can make with makeup! It happens on television quite often, the makeup artist is selling the shade of the season on everyone in the cast; only it doesn’t work on everyone.
Pink Spice, a soft cool pink. A good color for Cool Skin Tones that already have color on their lips, it won’t be as harsh as other lipsticks with a dark hue.
New Clover, the next place a mistake can be devastating to the overall look, blush. This cool blush is best on Cool Skin Tones with darker skin; a fair Cool Rose or Cool Violet will have cheeks that enter a room before she does!

Breeder Sally Fox Talks about Organic Color Grown Cotton
Inventor of FoxFibre organic colored cotton Sally Fox speaks about her journey and her expectations for the future of naturally colored organic cotton.
AN EARLY FASCINATION WITH FIBERS COMPELLED ME TO LEARN HOW TO SPIN, KNIT AND WEAVE AS A TEEN. My initial big idea
was to go into business custom spinning dog hair. When I was in high school every Saturday I sat in the window of a dog grooming shop spinning yarn from the hair cuttings. While still in high school I met a phenomenal woman named Dr. Elizabeth Wangari. Dr. Wangari was the second woman from Kenya to earn a PhD from a United States University (Wangari Maathai being the first). Dr. Wangari, inspired me to go into the study of insects (entomology) with the hopes of becoming part of a group of scientists figuring out ways to control pests without the use of chemicals that were also lethal to humans and other mammals. She organized an internship through a company that commercialized pheromones and insect growth hormones. This internship allowed me to attended University. I was the first in my family to ever receive a scholarship. It paid my tuition for all four years. Upon receiving that scholarship I believed I was on my way to changing the world for the better! I partially supported other college expenses by teaching others how to hand spin fibers. One of my students was an older woman whose daughter had been a high school textile instructor. As an instructor, she neglected to wear protective gloves when working with the chemical dyes used to teach her classes. The chemicals accumulated in her brain and as a result she had tragically been rendered a "vegetable" and in the care of a nursing facility. When my student shared the story of her daughter and her career I became inspired. I had always been fascinated with the natural colors of natural fibers. In fact, the San Francisco Zoo allowed me to frequently collect the down and hair of camels, musk oxen and many other animals to use in my hand spinning projects. There is a great range of color available in the animal fiber world. However, in cellulosic fiber I was only familiar with the white cotton I pulled out of medicine bottles and spun along with the lovely golden to silver tones of flax. Soon I learned there were many more shades, colors and tones’ of cotton. During the Southern California Hand Weaver’s Conference in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1978 I saw the first textile produced using naturally colored cottons from Central America. My

mind was blown! I wanted those colors! I graduated college and attended grad school in the hopes of researching and contributing in the field of agricultural studies in West Africa. However, upon graduation there was a depression in agricultural jobs in the US. The only work I could find was being an assistant to an independent plant breeder working on breeding nematode resistant cotton in Davis, CA. One day I opened a drawer in the greenhouse to discover a paper bag filled with the most glorious caramel and chocolate colored cotton, like the fibers I had seen years earlier in the Central America textile at the Hand Weaver’s Conference in Santa Barbara. That was the day I finally found my life's work. What gorgeous brown colors I had found! But, what a terribly short fiber- making it difficult to hand spin! I asked my employer if we could breed this cotton to get the fiber longer. He laughed and informed me that the USDA breeder had been trying to get the private cotton breeders to use these cottons as a source of insect and pest resistance for years; but he was not interested nor did he want to bother with the process and time required. The cotton had been collected from the Cajuns in Louisiana. The Cajuns received the cotton from enslaved Africans who had only been allowed to grow these cottons in their gardens. When I saw the cotton I knew we could improve the fiber length by crossing it with longer cottons and selecting back the longest and richest colors. My employer laughed and disagreed stating there was no market for colored cottons. I remember suggesting, "we can make a market for it." He replied, “why don't YOU make a market for it, during your own time," in a kind and amused sort of way. His remarks have guided me to the present day. I have been breeding, growing , designing yarns and fabrics and testing the products made from the cotton found in that paper bag since 1982 when I first was captured by these magical plants. Along the way I have worked with heroes and geniuses and people with hearts of gold. I’ve learned quite a bit. Consumers wanting or needing to avoid toxic dyes were some of my first customers and so the adventure of reducing or eliminating toxic chemicals in the entire textile process Just before picking, a magnificent "Coyote" brown cotton plant. Organic Color Grown Cotton (Continued) also became important. Thirty-three years later, I find myself still working to create a market for the cotton that I love by growing it. I still design beautiful yarns/fabrics and finished goods that are pesticide, herbicide and chemical free in the colors of golden brown, beige and green. The fascination never diminishes and the things I continue to learn about the cotton always enchants me. Throughout all these years more and more people have become enchanted with the rich and beautiful tones of this magical plant. Today, the fiber is loved and sought after by many conscious growers’, fashion designers and fabric retailers seeking to bring it into the world of commerce by providing many consumers the opportunity to enjoy its nurturing touch and amazing beauty. What I’m most excited about is the fact I’m no longer on this journey alone. Hundreds of people are wishing my company and the industry well and contributing. This past year FoxFibre initiated its first crowd funding BROWN RAW CHENILLE foxfibre® colorganic® cotton unboiled 1000yd/lb chenille suitable for knitting and campaign through Indiegogo. Conscious consumers weaving on a 1 lb cone stepped up their support for slow fashion by donating to the campaign. Because of their support the farm is more operational. In today’s fast and disposable fashion industry this overwhelming support assured me that I am not alone, many consumers want this cotton validating the fact that I am still on the right path. Last year the farm produced ten bales of color grown cotton. Due to the California drought this year we chose to not plant. However, I look forward to next year’s breeding and harvest. Vreseis Limited is the sister company of FoxFibre and a member of the Fibershed Marketplace. The Fibershed Marketplace is an independent association of farmers and artisans whom are certified by the educational non-profit organization called Fibershed*, as producing goods made entirely from fibers, natural dyes, and labor from within a 150 mile radius of the Northern California Fibershed headquarters. Recently, FoxFibre and sister company Vreseis Limited joined “CATA” Consumers Against Toxic Apparel as a Business Associate. As an associate FoxFibre is part of a national resource of organic clothing companies providing consumers exclusive discounts on unlimited purchases when they become a member. By joining “CATA,” FoxFibre is helping make organic apparel more affordable and sustainable while providing education and sharing vital information about toxic clothes. I believe the future of organic color grown cotton is bright, the industry is poised and waiting and the market is ready. IT’S TIME FOR THE HOLIDAY PARTIES, AND GETTING THE MEN TO DRESS FOR THE OCCASION CAN SOMETIMES CREATE HATE AND DISCONTENT BEFORE EVEN LEAVING THE HOUSE ! Trends have also moved towards men wearing whatever they
want while the women dress up for the occasion. And, by wearing whatever they want I mean, tee shirts and jeans. Any given moment one can observe a couple out on a date (married or not) and she is dressed casually but appropriate, and he is in jeans and tee shirt. When did this become the norm? We think it should change, and here are a few easy suggestions on how to create a fun holiday wardrobe for the man who truly wants to look his best for the woman in his life. A tuxedo jacket, why not? Who says it has to be with tuxedo pants? We have it paired with washable wool Traveler pants, a traveler long sleeve golf shirt, slip on Cole Haan shoes, and a silver pocket square. If he prefers a silk mock turtleneck, the look is still just as classy. This can also be achieved with a pair of black or blue jeans. But, don’t ruin that great look when you revert to the jeans by reverting to athletic shoes of any kind; keep the dress/casual Cole Haan slip on. Another easy to wear, again with jeans, khaki’s, or a washable wool pant, is to add a red blazer to the wardrobe. This is a staple, if not red, then at least a navy blue one; in camel hair or cashmere. The ones we show are camel hair. Add a tartan plaid tie if he has a dramatic personality, or a simple solid gold tie will suffice. Fashion trends have brought a resurgence of the patch elbow, we chose a light blue for the holidays, with a solid blue Executive button down shirt, and a red Joseph cashmere sweater. Always try to add a pocket square for little touch of class, with or without a tie. A plaid shirt paired with a holiday red or green sweater works if you just can’t get him into a blazer!

Coperlabel Heated Jackets, German Products Breaking into the World Market
By Carolyn Bendall Photos by Coperlabel
TAKING ON THE COLD HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR ALL OF TIME . Man has been trying to keep warm; and once he was able to keep warm in normal circumstances he increased the need for being warm in harsher circumstances. We flock to the higher elevations to play in the snow, whether it be to ski, to hike, to take in Mother Nature’s wonders, we flock to the snow. Visions of a warm fire and hot chocolate give us the hope to endure while in the cold. However, to Yves Pierre, his move from tropical Dominican Republic to the frigid winters of Germany, layers of clothing and hot chocolate wasn’t working. He began his pursuit to apply technology to fashion for practical warmth. Technology and Pierre did step up and he has provided us with heated jackets. The jackets actually came from medical technologies adapted to the outdoorsmen in all of us. The jackets have integrated heating panels into the fleece in the body of the jacket, powered by specially made power packs powered by batteries. The power packs have 4 different levels for the comfort of the wearer. The arms of the jackets are made to absorb the heat from the body of the jacket. Fleece is used for heavy cold; and polyester is used for milder cold. Humid climates that have the biting to the bone cold, are especially suited for the jackets, as they are made to wick the moisture away from the skin. The manufacturers have thought of everything, knowing that for an active lifestyle that the jackets are made for, they are easy to clean. Brushing the neck and under the arms, for everyday care; and hand washing for extreme cleaning. Hang the O c t o b e r 2 0 1 4 | 98

The wires and the heating panels should be carefully handled while cleaning (much like an electric blanket). The panels may break or become weak in the rotation of a washer or dryer. The jackets takes minutes to heat, and it is recommended that one starts with the highest setting, then reduce the heat to the comfort level best suited for the climate. The power packs’ batteries are rechargeable with plans in the works for those who hike extensively being able to recharge by solar energy. Tee shirts, also provided by Coperlabel, are recommended to be worn under the jacekts. The jackets are made in different levels, named for Mountains (in Europe) for the intensity needed. Other products in the works, are dresses and gloves. The company at this time is located on Kickstarter, the on line investor website. Those who invest in Coperlabel will receive discounts and access to the new products before the general public.

FITOVERS速 Sunglasses - Jonathan Paul Eyewear
Since Fitovers速 Sunglasses are designed to worn over your prescription eyewear, you will need to determine the style that best compliments the size and shape of your eyeglasses. Key to finding the right style, is to firstly measure the OVERALL width and height of your eyewear. Then refer to the size guide and look for a style that resembles the shape of your eyeglasses, then refer to the internal measurements of that style, and if your eyewear dimensions are less in height and width, then that style can comfortably be worn over your prescription eyewear. http://www.vseyewear.com/store-sunglass/fitovers-eyewear.html

So Let's Talk Soap. By Kati Goguen Photos by Green Lotus Studios
THERE IS NATURAL SOAP AND THEN THERE'S THE OTHER STUFF. FIRST LET' S TALK ABOUT THE OTHER STUFF. Did you know that the FDA heavily regulates the word Soap? Companies are not allowed to use that word unless it a TRUE handcrafted bar of soap. Take a look at the "soaps" you may have in your bathroom. Does it say soap or does it say "beauty bar", "skin cleanser" or anti-aging moisturizing bar"? I grabbed one of my leftover bars that I keep forgetting to throw away and actually looked at it. Do you know what it said? It says "Sweet Honeysuckle & Orange Peel". That's it. Nowhere on the box does it actually say it's soap. It's really a detergent! Let's look at the ingredients in it and see if we can understand them. First we have Sodium Tallowate. Sodium Tallowate is sodium salt of Tallow Acid and may be derived from animals. It's been known to cause eczema and blackheads. It's also used in wax paper, crayons, margarines, paints, rubber and lubricants. Do you really want that on your skin? Next ingredient is Sodium Cocoate. It is the PROCESSED sodium salt of Coconut Oil. Normally this is ok for you but keep in mind it's processed, not natural or organic. Then we have water, no problem there so let's move to glycerin. Glycerin is very good for you as it draws moisture out from the air and puts it in your skin which helps the skin remain moist and soft for long periods of time. However these large companies prepare their "soap" in a way that usually removes the glycerin content from the finished product. Now we come to the Fragrance. Did you know that the term fragrance usually represents dozens of mixtures of chemicals? Of the many thousands of chemicals that are used in fragrances, most have not been tested for toxicity and many have unlisted ingredients that are known to be irritants, can trigger allergies, migraines and asthma symptoms. Some have them have even been known to mimic hormones and alter genital development. Not all fragrances are that bad but unfortunately there’s not a way to know which have these unlisted ingredients and which don’t. Sodium Chloride is also known as table salt and is not harmful for your body or the environment unless used in very high

concentrations. Citric Acid is a natural preservative and is not known for causing any problems and in fact is used in many food items to help preserve them. Pentaerythrirtyl tetradi-t-butyl hydroxyhydrocinnamate, now that’s a mouthful. What is it do you ask? Well it functions as an antioxidant in cosmetic products and is known to be an environmental toxin. It was also shown to cause heart arrhythmia in laboratory rats. Pentasodium Pentetate is next on our list and is a chelating agent used to bind and sequester metal ions. Wait, what? Why would "soap" want to bind metal ions? Because it dissolves metals that are in the "soap" and prevents them from being deposited onto the hair, scalp and skin. I'll also tell you more uses for it later on. Chelating agents are used in cosmetics to remove calcium and magnesium cations, which impede foaming and cleansing performance and which can cause a haze in clear liquids. It also contains Honeysuckle Flower Extract and Orange Peel Extract which sound great but are these extracts organically and sustainably harvested or are they saturated in pesticides? Do you want to bath in Raid? Now let's look at Tetrasodium EDTA. This is perhaps the most dangerous ingredient of all. It's made from formaldehyde-a known carcinogen according to the National Cancer Institute and also from sodium cyanide (which is made from the toxic gas hydrogen cyanide). And the news gets worse as not only is it reported by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review to be safe but it's also a penetration enhancer. That means that it breaks down your skins' protective barrier which makes it easier for other potentially harmful ingredients in the formula to sink deeper into your tissues and even into your bloodstream. Can you believe we aren't done yet with the ingredients? We're not, next we have Titanium Dioxide. Titanium Dioxide is as old as the earth itself but it is chemically filtered for cosmetic use and is used in body care products like sunscreen. It appears to have low skin penetration but inhalation is a concern as it has been known to cause cancer from products that are aerosolized (airborne). Last but not least is the colorant. This product uses FD&C red no 4 and D&C yellow no 10. Synthetic colors are made from coal tar and contain heavy metal salts that may deposit toxins onto the skin. This causes skin sensitivity and irritation. Animal studies have shown almost

So, Let’s Talk Soap. (Continued) all of them to be carcinogenic, meaning they cause cancer. Remember when we wondered why you would need Pentasodium Pentetate which binds metals? Now you know why. Now that I've given you some background on why NOT to use commercial "soap" and possibly scared you too, let me tell you about natural or organic soap. Natural or organic soap is made from a process called saponification. This is where we combine lye (sodium hydroxide) and water. Once these two have combined we mix them with our fats and oils. Once you've blended them properly you add your scent (we love using Essential Oils but have been known to use fragrance oils from reputable sellers) and voila`! In 6 weeks you have bars of soap that are safe to use from organic or natural ingredients. You will never find natural or organic soap that has been made in a factory. At Green Lotus Studios it's all made lovingly by hand with only the best ingredients. Now I want you to read back through the really long section on commercially made "soap (detergent)" and the short section on natural or organic SOAP and I'll ask you this question, which one do you prefer to use for yourself or family? I imagine in the next 5 years or so that consumers are going to be demanding safer ingredients for their body and personal care items, especially after they've learned exactly what the big corporations are putting in it. I believe there will be a massive change in the way future products are made as the consumers will demand it. Oncology Esthetic Skincare (More than a just a facial)
By Charlotte Dorsey, M.Ed, LE, Certified Oncology Esthetician IT’S MONDAY MORNING, A DAY THE SALON IS NORMALLY CLOSED AND I’M WAITING PATIENTLY FOR A CLIENT WHO REQUESTED TO COME ON A DAY WHEN NO ONE ELSE IS THERE FOR HER SKINCARE . She is a breast cancer survivor, recently completing her last chemotherapy treatment and scheduling her reconstructive surgery. I’m seeing her for the first time today and will write a plan for her treatment. She was experiencing extremely dry patchy skin and hyperpigmentation from chemotherapy treatment, dark circles underneath her eyes, thinning hair and emotional stress as she is also a new mother. When she came for her first treatment, she announced: “My skin feels so dry, it’s flaking and I don’t want to even get dressed or put on make- up. I’m so stressed out right and trying to live a normal life, I can’t sleep. My hair is so thin and I just need a place of peace and respite, these dark circles underneath my eyes are too much, my life has changed since my diagnosis and I can’t relax. I was referred to you by several people so I’m here waiting for your fingers to touch my face”. This is my reward and I eagerly accept the challenge to bring life to health challenged skin that will also impact the mind, body and soul. Our appearance is very important to us which makes dealing with an illness and it’s after effects that much more stressful. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and medication can take a toll on the body inside and out. Once you’ve been diagnosed and made it through the journey of treatments, the next logical thing to do is to get back to living your life as you knew it, right? Wrong, you might never feel completely the same. You are proud that you made it through, then you realize things are different – you are different, your mind, body and spirit require a place of revitalization. Oncology esthetic skincare is an advanced certification program for spa professionals developed over the last 10 years through extensive research to integrate holistic healing spa treatments with western medicine. As oncology estheticians, we are trained to recognize abnormalities on the skin and direct appropriate referral for care. This specialized field requires complete commitment to the healing process of not only the integrity of the skin but also the psychosocial and emotional healing through a portion of the facial called touch therapy. As oncology estheticians, we know and understand the lymphatic system; how to direct the flow of massage (facial, neck, shoulders, arms and hands) based on where lymph nodes were removed. This is critical as we don’t want to cause an obstruction to an area where the nodes have been removed. This is one of the

Oncology Esthetic Skincare (Continued) reasons why certification is needed when addressing the concerns of cancer patients in a spa environment. The removal of lymph nodes as a result of cancer surgery determines the flow of lymph fluid for removal of toxins. When toxins are removed, the skin is much more vibrant. This form of oncology massage also eases pain, nausea or stress associated with the side effects of this life changing diagnosis. Oncology spa treatments keep the skin, hair and scalp as healthy as possible during and after cancer therapies and support a speedy recovery. Common side effects treated during oncology esthetic skincare: 1. Extremely dry, cracked or flaky skin and chapped lips usually seen in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Chemotherapy may impact the functioning of the sweat glands that leads to excessive dryness. 2. Itching after radiation treatments 3. Acne form rash caused by inflammation and stress 4. Hair loss and brittle nails caused by medication. 5. Pain, anxiety and stress which can consume one’s energy and consequently your appearance can fall by the wayside. Oncology esthetic skincare addresses these issues in a way designed to help clients look better which can give them the extra boost they need to actually be better. We understand that how you look directly affects how you feel and research shows that stress may delay the healing process. Healing is accelerated through touch as human touch comforts a hungry psyche. During the oncology facial, our focus is to hydrate and soothe the skin. The products selected and recommended are natural, organic and soothing to the skin, super hydrating, work well with the body to re-establish good moisture levels in the skin and boost its ability to heal itself as well as it did before.

As oncology estheticians, we understand that every medication taken depletes your body of other vital nutrients that must be replaced to keep your body healthy, balanced and less inflamed. Therefore, consistent skin therapy treatments which feed your skin topically with vital organic nutrients combined with oncology massage for psychosocial/emotional relief along

Oncology Esthetic Skincare (Continued) with a healthy diet and good nutrition are more important than ever when going through treatment and continued after treatment for speedy recovery. Did you know? A. Emotional stress can instigate disease and skin damage. The impact stress has on the skin is evident in conditions such as hives, acne, psoriasis and eczema. B. Psychological stress can affect the immune system and is the main trigger for negative emotions that cause emotion distress. This emotional distress can cause a delay in healing, has an inflammatory effect and causes premature aging of the body and skin. The therapeutic benefits of oncology esthetic skincare decreases impact of side effects such as dryness, sensitivity; increases opportunity for a speedier recovery, eases pain and stress associated with side effects plus integrates psychological and spiritual aspects of healing through touch therapy. 10 Tips from your Oncology Skin Therapist: 1. Boost your energy with vitamin B supplements. 2. Use Natural/Organic Serums that contain Vitamin C (a potent anti-oxidant that prevents fine lines and wrinkles). 3. Pumpkin is packed with Vitamin A,C,E. Make a puree and use as a mask to help give your skin a glow. Tina Phillips
4. Oncology esthetic skincare is recommended for anyone experiencing concerns related to health challenged skin, i.e. side effects of medications, lifestyle neglect, recovering or in treatment for cancer therapy and should be performed by a oncology esthetician. 5. Read your labels as far as product ingredients. Look for products that contain shea butter, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and aloe. These ingredients really work well with the body to re-establish good moisture levels in the skin and boost its ability to heal itself.
6. Sunscreen = Be a shady lady. No direct sunlight between 10 & 3. Your sunscreen probably isn’t shielding you from sun damage because most of us don’t apply the recommended shot-glass amount of SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. That’s the minimum experts say you need to protect yourself. Also chemical sunscreens are highly toxic and may affect the endocrine system. It is better to use physical sunscreens like titanium and zinc. Formaldehyde is found in many personal care products and it is a known carcinogen and can cause dermatitis. Organic and natural products are best. 7. Do It Yourself Mask: Banana and honey face mask to brighten and hydrate your skin: Banana’s contain B6, Vitamin C, Manganese, Potassium and Fiber. Honey contains B2, B6, Iron and Manganese. Combine ½ banana (mashed) with 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of sour cream. Apply to your face and leave on for 10 minutes. Gently wipe off with a damp washcloth. O c t o b e r 2 0 1 4 | 116

You might want to invest in a buckwheat or form-fitting pillow that will help keep your head upright. 9. Meditation – Yoga – Skincare: All related to and has brilliant positive healing potential. It requires you to concentrate on your breathing, mind and inner self. It supplies oxygen to your body which helps in replenishing and rejuvenating lost nutrition as well as eliminating lifelessness in your skin. 10. Vitamin A is a wrinkle fighter and found in liver, eggs and fruit.
11. There are ways to diminish the appearance of scars after breast reconstruction which can lead to improved mental and emotional health. Many women use LED light therapy to reduce the visibility of scarring after surgery. While a scar will never disappear completely, it will soften with a series of weekly treatments. About Nurturing Touch Skincare: Nurturing Touch provides safe, soothing holistic facial skincare treatments to clients experiencing any side effects from health challenged skin. We treat clients’ dry, sensitive, fragile and debilitated skin as a result of chemotherapy, radiation, medication or just a lifestyle of neglect. We provide sensitive yet supportive treatments that bring out the most amazing skin results. As advanced trained and certified spa professionals, we are qualified to recognize related side effects of different therapies and medications and tailor skincare treatment accordingly. Angela Efros: An American in China
By Sherry O’Connor Photos Provided by Angela Efros
PHYSICS, MATH, BUSINESS AND THEATER WERE THE CHOICES BEING CONSIDERED BY ANGELA FOR HER COLLEGE DEGREE . Like many young people, she couldn’t make up her mind. Which way should she go? She graduated from Eastern Arizona College with an Associate of Arts in Theater and worked as a journalist for the Eastern Arizona Courier. In 2010, Angela decided she wanted to do something different – she went to China with China Horizons (an English teaching program that seeks out individuals with high morals and standards looking for a life-changing opportunity abroad while offering meaningful service) to teach English for six months. That was four years ago and she is still having a blast writing, teaching and performing – all while exploring China. Angela has a passion for language. Living in China, she has learned Chinese without all the work most people think is required. She wants to show the world language learning is not about textbooks, but is about living life. One of her best learning t

ools in her China adventure was talking to taxi drivers. In 2013, she represented her university in a competition called China Bridge – an international competition to find the best Mandarin Chinese speakers – and she made it to the finals. The unique method Angela used to learn Chinese is now being passed on to her students. She encourages them not to study English, but to live in English. She cooks foods, shows movies or gets them singing in English – all the while learning new words and working on pronunciation. With several large classes, learning names for each child is difficult. They pick their own English names and it must be a wonderful place with students named Rainbow, Coco or Snow White. She is amazed at their optimistic attitude. No complaining about 14 hour days or extra classes on weekends – they treat each day as a gift and are happy to be alive. Best of all, she has the chance to inspire her students to have courage and go after their dreams. Music has always been a part of Angela’s life with parents who encouraged her to use her talents performing in community activities that allowed her to perform on stage both as an actor and singer. It wasn't always easy and feelings of self conscientious was occasionally present, but to give it up – she knew she would never be happy if she did. Now as a performer, she sings both English and Chinese for events and parties – she has even been on TV. The feeling of connecting with an audience on the stage is just so incredible. Angela says that point when she is on a stage, stops thinking about everything else

Whether they are crying with her, or laughing with her, for those few moments they share something together. In 2011, Angela opened for the Hainan Island Golden Music Festival where several Chinese celebrities performed. She was amazed to find the people we idolize are usually just like the rest of us. With a beautiful voice, a unique teaching style and an honest interest in exploring and learning, Angela is enjoying life just being who she is. Angela has met some incredible people, learned a whole new culture, and is having a grand adventure. Her advice to you – “if you have a crazy idea that you want to try, a trip around the world, a book, whatever, don't try to rationalize your way out of it. Really, what's the worst thing that could happen if you try? And then when you realize that it’s a lot less scary than you think it is, just go for it.” Learn more about Angela at www.angelaefros.com.
