Great Finds: Going Natural Laundry Soap with no suds, blasphemy you say!! Suds is not needed, contrary to popular belief. This laundry soap is wonderful. It is not mass produced and full of fillers and sudsy stuff. It’s simple, clean, and works. http://www.coconutrain.com/

Kiehl’s Lip Balm is not fancy, doesn’t come in a trendy package, and is just plain old boring. But, it works. It keeps lips soft and smooth for several hours. Longer than I am used to when using the fancy lip glosses that come in an array of packaging, delivery systems, and flavors. Kiehl’s does have flavors (a gift set for the holidays), but they are not overpowering and do not linger. Just a good product that works. http://www.kiehls.com/Lip-Balm-1/307,default,pd.html

doTerra’s ‘Slim & Sassy’ metabolic blend is a blend of essential oils that helps with one’s metabolism. You can add a few drops to a glass of water (real glass, not a plastic glass) and drink it. You can also apply it to the skin directly or with an occupanying oil (usually coconut oil or olive oil) if your skin is sensitive. When you apply it to the skin, you are supposed to also do a ‘wrap’ which can be plastic wrap from your kitchen. You rub in a few drops of the oil in the area you want treated, then you apply the plastic wrap and leave it on for several hours. They mention that most people just do this overnight. Now, I’m very skeptical of potions that tout weight loss. However, I am at a place right now that I am gaining about a week (unless I drink water all week). Since I started using this (mostly as a drink, but one failed attempt at wrapping, however, I didn’t give up on simply massaging in) I have not gained any weight. Now, if my metabolism were normal, I truly think that I would be losing weight. I don’t know it’s magic cure ingredient; however, the scales don’t lie. http://shop.doterra.com/ N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 | 11

Your True Colours Great Finds: Going Natural (Continued)

Green’s First. I attended a seminar on green smoothies. I tried it. I failed miserably. First, my blender didn’t really make them smoothies, more like chunkies. I just couldn’t sip on something all day (like the lady doing the seminar said is the best way to drink the two smoothies a day for your healt). I understood the ‘raw is good for you’; not disputing that. I just need a smoothie that is for one meal, when I drink it, I’m done. I’ll do those, a little fruit, some yogurt, maybe a bit of protein powder. Then, a friend of my gave me sample packages of Greens First. Two days later, I bought a canister. My knee pain and stiffness and not being able to put much pressure on them and not coming down stairs very easy all diminished. Am I losing weight? No. I don’t care about that. I care about the nutrition that I am obviously getting that I needed desparately. I can climb stairs, I can descend stairs, I can get up from a chair, all without maximum pain. There might be a hint of stiffness at the first few steps, but I can deal with that completely. It is just one scoop with water (or mixed in with a protein powder or juice or milk) and you have your nutrition. I drink one glass of water with one scoop of the powder a day. If I miss one day, I feel it. So, basically; not missing a day….http://www.waytogonatural.com

Apothecary Extracts’ Tea Tree Oil is a maleluca pure oil. It is affordable, and you get 4 oz. Most other essential oil companies have a much smaller jar and cost quite a bit more. I love essential oils. I can get rid of a migraine if I catch it quick enough without taking migraine medication just by using Tea Tree Oil. I used it on my feet at the end of the day, when one’s feet are just tired, and not only did it ease them but I woke with soft feet that which I didn’t have to apply lotion. There is a 50-something page ebook that comes with the purchase of the oil that is full of ‘recipes’ for various uses from body aches, to softer skin, to a healthy scalp, to cleaning. I always recommend essential oils. There should be certain ones in your medicine cabinet all the time. Tea Tree Oil is only available through Amazon.com, right now.

The Napier Co. Defining 20th Century American Costume Jewelry

MELINDA L. LEWIS

T

he Definitive History and Visual Catalog of The Napier Co. Jewelry: A Tour De Force!

Of all the jewelry manufacturers in the United States, none has influenced a woman’s expression of style more than The Napier Co. Throughout its 121–year history, it continually broke new ground, raising both standards and expectations for quality in fashion jewelry. It is only fitting that the Scottish name “Napier” means “without equal,” as its dedication to innovation in manufacturing methods and the creative freedom of its designers, raised the bar for the American costume jewelry industry. This book tells the heretofore untold and phenomenal story of The Napier Co.’s inception, development, flowering, and ultimate success. It chronicles the history of its management, manufacturing, marketing, and most importantly, the unparalleled beauty of its jewelry. With approximately 4000 pictures and over 250,000 words of text and descriptions, you will be taken step-by-step, decade by decade, through the development of the Napier style. As a collector, you will learn to recognize the findings, materials, and designs to appropriately circa-date the Napier jewelry in which you are investing. As a lover of jewelry, you will enjoy the drama and excitement of the trials, tribulations, and breakthroughs at each stage of the Napier journey. In the end, you will have a deep and lasting appreciation of the romantic story infused into the metal, gemstones, crystals, cabochons, and elegance of each piece of Napier jewelry that you own or are considering owning. On this journey, we will examine Napier’s role in the jewelry and fashion industries of which it was a part, especially the relationship between overall fashion trends and jewelry design. We will follow the development of the fashion industry as a whole, from the last quarter of the 19th century into the 21st century, with a particular focus on the 20th century, when fashion or costume jewelry entered a woman’s wardrobe as part of the necessary accoutrements of fashionable dress. As we guide you through the decades, you will learn how various social factors shaped the history of costume jewelry, including: • The influence of the Paris Salons, couture, and the various fashion “movements” whose popularity and competition drove the ever-changing styles. • The effects of technological and manufacturing breakthroughs, such as mass production, new materials and the affordability of jewelry on popular tastes. • The communication breakthroughs in mass media, which both spread conventional fashion standards faster and more broadly, but also allowed for the creation of more specialized markets and styles. • The impact of competition between jewelry manufacturing communities, firms and related industries, as well as the effects of governmental regulation and resource availability on what could be made, marketed, and sold as the latest fashion. • And much, much more.

“Not only is the book beautiful ... photos, color, layout and design and

paper, but is filled with an encyclopedia’s worth of information. Everyone should have this as part of their jewelry library.” Shelly Osborne

Life Image – Gratitude BY CAROLYN BENDALL

I LOVE THE TANGENTS THAT HAPPEN ON FACEBOOK FOR GRATITUDE POSTS. I have a Facebook friend that did several weeks of ‘Gratitude Walks’, and she would take a photo along her walk, then post what she reflected on that day during her walk. It was really beautiful. I watched for her post each day. It wasn’t a set up meme or someone else’s post that she shared. It came from her heart and refelcted her thoughts. Stepping outside of our busy world where we can quickly become obsessed with the most minute disruption of our day is a must. Everything has to be done instanteously and then lost just as quickly. Instead, let’s look around us for the things within our day that we should be grateful. Stepping outside of my world around me, what can I be thankful for on this particular day? • The sound of the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels flying above practicing for tomorrow’s air show. I am grateful for those brave men and women who defend our freedoms. • The car that I drove to a photo shoot this morning. I am grateful for the car, for the skill of those that developed and built it. I’m

grateful for the roads and the workers that put sweat into my convenice. I’m grateful for the radio I listened to and the technology that brought it to me. • The food we have and the abundance that we have that enables us to provide for ourselves and others. • The computer I am creating on, and those that had the knowledge and talent to concieve the idea and the others that brought it to fruition. We can take our daily life minute by minute and find all the things within our own personal world. So, for the next month, let’s do a daily gratitude walk. Walk through your day in your mind, and record those things that all came together to make your day possible. Use the chart provided, either as a guide or print off enough for the month, and write down (reason

for that) those things within your life that you are grateful. Why write it down, it means more and it makes you go outside of your crazy world to focus. Then, later, when you are having a case of the ‘Oh Poor Me’s’, you simply bring out your Gratitude Walk, and realize your world is great.

#gratitudewalk Day 33: went up the #afcanyon for an early morning stroll with Lizette - no crying kids this time Feeling especially #grateful for the beautiful world we live in. #thankful for a loving God and Savior who created such a beautiful place for us to enjoy and recognize #heavenonearth. They understand our need to escape from the stresses of life, and provided such places to feel peace and close to them. #thankyou #happysunday

Wellness: Gratitude By Kally Efros

EXPERIENCING AND EXPRESSING GRATITUDE IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF ANY SPIRITUAL PRACTICE. IT OPENS THE HEART AND ACTIVATES POSITIVE EMOTION CENTERS IN THE BRAIN. Regular practice of gratitude can

change the way our brain neurons fire into more positive automatic patterns. Gratitude improves a person’s cardiovascular and immune system functions. There is even evidence that thinking about the people we love lowers the risk of coronary problems. The positive emotions we evoke can soothe distress and broaden our thinking patterns so we develop a larger and more expansive view of our lives. Gratitude is an emotion of connectedness, which reminds us we are part of a larger universe with all living things.

Vlado

To begin bringing gratitude into your life, you can deliberately meditate on all the things in your own life that help you or give you pleasure. A common method to develop the practice of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal, a concept that was made famous by Sarah Ban Breathnach’s book “Simple Abundance Journal of Gratitude”. This exercise basically consists of writing down every day a list of three to ten things for which you are grateful; you can do this first thing in the morning or before going to bed at night. Many years ago I was asked to do this as part of an experiment for 30 days. It was hard at first and then it changed my life for the better. I couldn’t believe the difference it made.

Another exercise you can try is to write a gratitude letter to a person who has exerted a positive influence in your life but whom you have not properly thanked. Some experts suggest that you set up a meeting with this person and read the letter to them face to face. The holidays are a great time to express your gratitude to friends and family by writing cards and exchanging thoughtful, personal gifts. Baking cookies for neighbors or sharing food with the poor are other ways to express appreciation for the abundance of food that we have in this country. Gratitude can lead to feelings of love, appreciation, generosity, and compassion, which further open our hearts and help rewire our brains to fire in more positive ways.

Gratitude can be a powerfully transformative practice. Psychologists Robert Emmons of U.C. Davis and Michael McCullough of the University of Miami have found that practicing gratitude can actually improve our emotional and physical well-being. Their ongoing research has found that people who keep weekly gratitude journals had fewer physical symptoms, exercised more, had a better outlook on life and were more likely to reach their goals. The study split several hundred people into three different groups and all of the participants were asked to keep daily diaries. The first group kept a Stuart Miles diary of the events that occurred during the day without being told specifically to write about either good or bad things; the second group was told to record their unpleasant experiences; and the last group was instructed to make a daily list of things for which they were grateful. The results of the study indicated that daily gratitude exercises resulted in higher reported levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, optimism, and energy. In addition, those in the gratitude group experienced less depression and stress, were more likely to help others, exercised more regularly, and made greater progress toward achieving personal goals. People with neuromuscular disease who practiced daily gratitude "had more high-energy positive moods," felt more connected to others, and felt more positive about life in comparison to a control group. Emerging research points to gratitude as a potential bridge between students' academic and social well-being. Studies show that grateful youth have higher GPAs; experience more positive emotions; and, ultimately, go on to live more meaningful lives. In addition, gratitude among middle school students can foster an increased sense of hope and trust in others and fuel a desire to give back to their community. “Practicing gratitude helps people extract the most out of life,” Emmons says. “People can also experience an overall shift to a more benevolent view of the world. I think it’s kind of a spiritual shift for some people because it makes them more aware of life as a gift.” Here are daily practices anyone can use to increase gratitude. 1. See the giver behind the gift. "We ask people to focus every day on a particular person who provided

them with a benefit," Emmons says. That's really what gratitude is. It's not just something you're happy about." It could be anyone from the spouse who made you a nice breakfast to the person who bagged your groceries. 2. Ask yourself three questions every day. A powerful way to cultivate gratitude is to focus on what is really happening in our lives, rather than falling into the traps of complaining and drama, says Gregg Krech, author of "Naikan: Gratitude, Grace, and the Japanese Art of Self Reflection," and co-founder of the ToDo Institute in Monkton, Vermont. The basic practice of Naikan, which translates to "insidelooking," consists of asking oneself three questions every day: "What have I received today? What have I given? What trouble have I caused?" While Naikan doesn't deny the difficult parts of our lives, it puts things into perspective, says Krech, who asks himself these three questions every evening. "When I list everything I received and then everything I gave each day, what I have in the giving column is always so much shorter than what's in the receiving column," he says. "As we become aware that we've received so much more than we've given, not only does that cultivate gratitude, it also cultivates often a sense of wanting to give something back to the world." 3. Practice even when you don't feel like it. "One of the mistakes people often make in our culture is thinking you have to feel grateful to practice gratitude," says psychologist Miriam Greenspan, author of Healing Through the Dark Emotions: The Wisdom of Grief, Fear, and Despair. "You can practice anytime—when you feel sorrow, great anxiety over a parent's imminent death, if you have a disabled child. Whatever one can muster at these points as a prayer of gratitude—okay, I'm still breathing, or I have friends who care about me—tips the experience from being immersed unmindfully in one's suffering to moving into the present moment with a more holistic perspective. We see that there is suffering, but there is also this gratitude, and we can hold them together." 4. Create a simple family ritual. "In our family, every evening when we have dinner, we say our thank you's," says Greenspan. "It's not a formal prayer of any kind, but just what we're grateful for in the moment, and that's all. It brings us back, it's a touchstone to the miracles of life that we may have been overlooking." Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. In addition, behavioral and psychological research has shown the surprising life improvements that can stem from the practice of gratitude. Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health, and it reduces stress. In addition, Dr. Emmons’ research shows that those who practice gratitude tend to be more creative, bounce back more quickly from adversity, have a stronger immune system, and have stronger social

Wellness: Gratitude

relationships than those who don’t practice gratitude. He further points out that “To say we feel grateful is not to say that everything in our lives is necessarily great. It just means we are aware of our blessings.” Dr. Darren Weissman has a book entitled The Heart of the Matter: A Simple Guide to Discovering Gifts in Strange Wrapping Paper. We all have experiences that we are not thrilled to have and are painful, but these challenges are really gifts in very strange paper. If we receive them with gratitude, we grow. When you going through a challenging time, stop and with mindfulness and gratitude observe the experience. “What can you learn?”, “What gifts are there in this?”, “What’s good about this?”, and “What are you grateful for?” Remember, every difficulty carries within it the seeds of an equal or greater benefit. Once you become oriented toward looking for things to be grateful for, you will find that you begin to appreciate simple pleasures and things that you previously took for granted. Gratitude should not be just a reaction to getting what you want, but an all-the-time gratitude, the kind where you notice the little things and where you constantly look for the good even in unpleasant situations. Today, start bringing gratitude to your experiences, instead of waiting for a positive experience in order to feel grateful; in this way, you’ll be on your way toward becoming a master of gratitude. Dr. Emma Seppala of Stanford University says, if we have a roof above our head, a couple of meals a day, are educated enough to read and have access to a computer and the internet, we have received more opportunities, material goods, and education than the majority of the world's population. In fact, research suggests that, in general, we actually have three times more positive experiences than negative!” Sure, there will always be difficult situations in our lives and plenty to grump about. However, we can either let these situations control the state of our mind and spoil our day or take charge of our own wellbeing by remembering to smile at all that's right. The situations may not change, but we will. If that doesn’t convince you of the power of gratitude for your arztsamui physical and mental health, then this might. A great research who just passed away, Dr. Masaru Emoto, studied water. He looked at frozen water under microscopes. Polluted water will not form a crystal shape while spring water will. He studied words, thoughts and music’s effect on water and found interesting data. He found that negative thoughts, words, and even N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 | 22

harsh music will not form a crystal. But, positive thoughts and words such as love and gratitude and good music will form beautiful crystal shapes. Your body is around 80% water, when you are exposed to negative thoughts and words the water in your body doesn’t form a crystal, it can’t conduct energy and you may feel weighed down. On the up side – when you expose your body to positive thoughts and words, your water will form crystals. Crystal shapes conduct energy and we are able to process emotions, think and even have more energy. Negative thought and polluted water share a common result just as positive thought and fresh spring water share common results. What you focus on grows. Count your blessings. Fill your heart and mind with positive thoughts and gratitude. You will experience the same wonderful change I did. I have a lot to be grateful for. I have an amazing husband, Mark who stands by my side through many ups and downs. I have 7 amazing and unique children. I have extended family and friends that have touched my life in extraordinary ways. I’m grateful for Carolyn Bendall and Debra Norwood for all they do and allow me to do. I’m grateful for the little things, like running water and a toilet, for my comfy bed. I’m grateful for the challenges in life I have had – and while painful to handle and sometimes I didn’t think possible to get through, they have taught me amazing things and I am a better person for having had those experiences. I am grateful for wonderful teachers and digitalart mentors along my path. I’m grateful that I had some very poor health experiences that got me to learn about alternative health and better living. I am grateful for my business that allows our family to spend time together and for our customers. I could go on and on – but I am most grateful for my understanding of God and for His grace and mercy. If you want to help change the world, spread happiness, love and gratitude.

The average person walks approximately four miles each day – that is 115,000 miles in a lifetime. Say what you will about the look, feel or aroma of the human foot, there is no debating that it is a strong, sensitive and highly specialized structure. Designed for endurance, the foot contains 26 bones, more than 150 ligaments, 7,200 nerve endings and a complex network of muscles and blood vessels. It is the capacity of the foot for strength, sensory perception, balance and endurance that inspires the foundation of kigo's design. kigos are made to maximize the foot's ability to function as it is naturally intended, while keeping it protected from the elements.

Is It Time To Invest in a New Pair of Sneakers? By Tonya Tittle

I’M TONYA TITTLE, A PERSONAL TRAINER IN DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS AND RUNNER FOR OVER 25 YEARS, CLIENTS ASK US HERE AT ENERGY FITNESS HOW TO TELL IF IT’ S TIME TO INVEST IN A NEW PAIR OF SNEAKERS. Often times having lower leg or low back injuries is the first sign to look at replacing your base of support.

A good pair of running shoes may run you anywhere between $65 and $135. This can add up to a huge investment in your health. Often times you can get last year’s model for close to half price. Scout online stores like zappos.com, 6pm.com, or Amazon.com . Most running shoes last anywhere between 300500 miles, depending on the construction of the shoe, your physical makeup and the way your foot strikes the surface as you run. The best way to tell if you need a new pair of sneakers is to look for signs of wear and tear on the outsole and checking the compression of the midsole (the cushioning just above the outsole). The outsole, the rubber part that hits the ground, will eventually wear down, much like a tire, making it harder to grip the surface below. The midsole cushion will compress and lose its ability to absorb shock. treadmills. Running on pavement will wear out the outsole much faster than running on dirt roads, grass and treadmills. However, the midsole cushion will compress at the same rate no matter the surface. To test your midsole, turn your shoe over and press on the outsole, notice the compression of the midsole section. As you wear the shoes, the compression area of the midsole will lessen.

Is It Time To Invest in a New Pair of Sneakers? (Continued) Trying a new shoe on one foot, yet, keeping your old shoe on the other is also another way to check your midsole compression. If you are significantly higher in the new shoe, your midsole is compressed.

What’s your wear pattern? If your sneakers have an even wear across the heel and under the ball of the foot, then you have a uniform stride along the foot from heel to toe. About 80% of runners fall into this category. If your outsoles are worn down mostly on the outside of the shoe, it indicates that you are not rolling your ankle inward enough when running and you are striking the ground with the outside edges of your foot. Runners in this category are susceptible to stress fractures and should buy shoes that are well cushioned for shock absorption.

Is It Time To Invest in a New Pair of Sneakers? (Continued) Sneakers that have significant wear in the heel and ball of the foot extending up to the big toe indicates that the runner rolls their foot too far inward as they land. Shoes that provide arch support can help limit this roll and keep their pace in line. When sneakers show wear mostly in the heel, with slight wear around the ball of the foot, it points to an over-stride, or running with the feet too far in front of the body. Runners in this category should buy shoes that offer protection with extra cushioning to relive some of the shock when landing. The bottom line, is to trust your gut and pay close attention to how your body feels during and after a run. If you experience discomfort due to poor tread or wear, go try on a new pair

Header from Jewelers' Circular 1906

THE EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE OFTEN CONJURES UP THOUGHTS OF FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND A GOOD LIFE. I AM GRATEFUL FOR ALL OF THOSE THINGS, ESPECIALLY FOR MY DAUGHTERS AND MY HUSBAND. However, as strange as it may seem at first to say,

I’m especially grateful for vintage costume jewelry. And, surprisingly the gratitude and purpose I have found through studying jewelry is common for many people in the larger jewelry community who study and collect it. To understand the passion and gratitude I (and my compatriots) have toward the history of fashion adornment, you must know the story and legacy of the American costume and fashion jewelry industry. It is a story of hope, adventure, hard work; and at times, bravery. The roots of costume jewelry date back to the 18th century when the first jewelry concerns were established in Providence, 1920 Napier Beaded Sautoir Rhode Island, and the Attleboros of Massachusetts. Many skilled artisans and craftsmen left Europe with a vision of a better life— often fostered by the spirit of entrepreneurship. Some journeyed across the ocean as passengers, with their names documented on old passenger ship manifests, while others came as stowaways, their passage uncounted in the naval histories. Early census records documented the birthplace of jewelry workers from countries such as France, Germany, and Hungary. These new immigrants brought not only their hope and drive to succeed, but also tremendous talent, imagination, and skill. Many of these men had c. 1890's Jewelry factory located in Providence, RI, USA

worked for famous jewelry businesses in Europe. They were silversmiths, stone setters, and model makers. They were, in fact, artists and trendsetters. With the American public hungry for designs coming from Europe, especially Paris, these men understood how to translate the je ne sais quoi of Parisian and European style into the American idiom. By the mid1850s, jewelry had already become a means of selfexpression for the citizenry of this rapidly expanding nation.

Over the following 150 years and up until the present moment, an intricate dance evolved between the costume jewelry industry and the people who wore it. As the styles and fashion changed, so did the public demand for novel jewelry design. The manufacturers responded by innovating new methods, materials, and marketing techniques to satisfy our desires. Through the process, we are left with an unfolding history of

Your True Colours

For the Love of Jewelry (Continued) beauty, craftsmanship, and pageantry. It is the beauty and pageantry of this history for which I am so grateful. I am enthralled by the prosaic drama of it all. Each time I learn something new about the history of a decades-old piece of jewelry, I experience a rush of endorphins and excitement. Each discovery acts as a salve, washing away the aches and pains that otherwise act to spoil my daily experience. I live with chronic pain, yet jewelry gives me a purpose to experience it not from a place of suffering, but from a Early turn of the century factory jewelry bench work. place of purpose, discovery, and sharing. My days may be crummy, despite my outward smiles, but my love of jewelry history inspires my creativity and sources my thriving. My story is not unlike many who enter into the field of jewelry history, or collecting, or selling--folks who work hard to try to cope with physical challenges. We eagerly await the next discovery of information lost from decades ago. We love the excitement of finding something new that has a beautiful story, educating one another on what we have learned, and sharing in the community that forms around our common fascination. We love the thrill of the hunt—as it bathes the body with the neuro-chemicals that trick it to feel better— even if it is for a short while.

December 6, 1906, Jewelers' Circular image of Lavelier style necklace.

To say jewelry was and is a Godsend is an understatement. The manufacture and marketing of jewelry have given people the hope of prosperity. The purchase and display of jewelry give its wearer the opportunity to bring beauty and style to their lives. And the study and collection of pieces across decades of history brings joy and fellowship to people long after the fashions of the day have past. I offer thanks and appreciation to all those who love and create the jewelry with which we decorate our ensembles, and through which we fashion small but precious moments of meaning.

The Need for Natural Fragrances! By JoAnne Bassett

Natural eau de toilettes and natural parfums made solely from therapeutic quality essential oils and high quality absolutes are far superior to their counterpart - the synthetic fragrances. Many people who have allergies are not able to wear the synthetic fragrances that are sold in the major department stores, discount stores, and drugstores. This is due to the chemical compositions that they contain. This “chemical soup” that is the fragrance oils, contain toxic chemicals that are compounded in the laboratory. These so called fragrances have never even seen a flower let alone a flower grown without pesticides in an organic garden. These chemicals that copy nature are used to make synthetic eau de toilettes and parfums. They are used to reduce the price of the product. In days of old when real flowers were used the all-natural concoctions became cost prohibitive. The real French parfum and all natural eau de toilettes became very expensive to produce. Therefore the market required a cheaper alternative. Synthetics were born. Real lavender essential oil, real Bulgarian rose oil, and real Jasmine sambac were now a thing of the past. In their places were Praisaeng the chemical mixtures that were made to ”smell” like the Essential Rose Oil is a natural fragrance that real rose, etc. True Bulgarian rose oil has a complexity should be used in fragrance. that cannot be duplicated in the laboratory. The “fake” rose oil that is created in the laboratory is inert and has no life energy to it. The true rose has a depth and softness that cannot be copied in the laboratory.

The “real thing” does not make your nose curl or your nose water. People with allergies cannot go near a fragrance department in a store as they may not be able to breathe or their eyes or nose will water. Some people will get an instant headache from inhaling these petrochemicals. The scary thing is that some of these trendy fragrances cost a fortune with their beautiful packaging. Very large advertising budgets are needed to support the new fragrance campaigns. These expenses all get added to the cost of the bottle of eau de toilette. David Castillo Dominici

Wouldn’t it make more sense to support the small farmers raising the organic gardens, harvesting, and distilling the natural essential oils from the flowers? Why would anyone support the industry that copies the real thing? When purchasing all natural eau de toilettes from boutique perfumers, you can be assured of the quality of materials they are buying. Most of these organic materials would be of the same quality found in your organic produce section of your local health food store. Isn’t putting all natural products on your skin as important as putting organic and all natural products in your diet? I trust the next time you go to make a purchase of fragrance, take a moment and consider spending your money on something that is alive and not grown in the lab. Your skin will thank you and your nose will be much happier. The people in your immediate environment will not have to turn away so they don’t choke on the fumes! Elevator rides may even become a pleasant experience.

Did you ever wonder why you are attracted to certain scents? Why you walk right up to someone to ask what they are wearing? This book will help you get a better idea why we use our nose and not are brain when choosing fragrance. We have smell memories and we are able to discern fragrances that we have encountered before. This favorable scent will unlock mysteries and keys to our growth and understanding of ourselves. Are you intrigued? Dive deeper into the world of fragrance as JoAnne takes you on an aromatic journey of the senses.

Image Careers – Keith Barrett, Jr. (Continued) Google Play Store. Barrett’s writing starts with a melody he may develop within his thoughts; then as he thinks more about the tune, words begin to fill in the spaces. Networking with artists and independent music composers brought with it the invitation to co-write. Then, he met Everett at a church where Blessed Generation was performing. He notes that along with his duties born from his talents, he also has to make sure that the groups he manages have a stylish stage presence. “The audience is more critical of the fashion on stage, you must look your best.” He further explains why his image consultant training was so significant, “A group shouldn’t be in a ‘uniform’; rather the individual personalities of the performer must come through. Yet, still maintaining a coordinated appearance.” Then add skin tone differences to the equation, and creating a great group look can be frustrating, unless you have the correct tools to make it a breeze. Barrett says that the solo performer is a bit easier, because they really only have themselves to work with. However, making wrong choices will show more with the solo performer. Knowing body line, personality and skin tone gives him the ability to set the stage for the solo performer to have the audience focus on the music and not why he or she choose the ‘horrible outfit’ they are wearing. The major reason he knew he needed the Image Consultant training to add to his resume, “Performers are working indepent more now than they have ever in my memory. The record companies are not there to provide that Image Consultant to make sure one puts the best foot forward.” The new age of Kickstarter, I-Tunes, You Tube, and Google Play Store have created a void in the full package an entertainer once had. Barrett knows he can fill that void.

Melissa Laskin mostly is a stylist for people who wanted to be unique with their wardrobe. She was a painter, however, it wasn’t a part of her styling. Then a life event changed that. A serious car wreck left Laskin with time to spend with her painting while her back healed. She had the time to experiment with abstracts, and how she could meld her two professions. She began to see the paintings as a tee shirt, and then began directing the abstracts so that they were meant to be a tee shirt instead of a canvass. Meaning that the design of the abstract was placed in a manner that it was best represented as a tee shirt. The next step in the process was to make sure that the tee shirts were not cheap looking; they needed to be nice Melissa Laskin, stylist, painter, designer; ‘Mom’ to ‘Elvis’,the orange tabby, her line is named after.

could be worn with anything from jeans to a suit. The fabric is soft and the design is not banded. Her tees come in straight and fitted cuts. The sleeves can be short, 3.4, long sleeve. The necks can be a crew neck or a v-neck. The tees have been seen on Robin Wright, Pauley Perrette, and Courtney Cox, just to mention a few. They can be purchased in boutiques all across the United States. Stepping into a truly one of a kind piece Laskin recently painted on a canvas; then fashioned the canvas into a skirt. There is no way that skirt can be remade exactly! It made for a fun photo shoot! Laskin’s latest painting, so new the tee shirt is still in production.

Your True Colours Rose Anne Colavito, photographer, draws from nature for her inspiration. Transitioning from artist to creative director of her own fashion company happened when a friend commented that a photo hanging in her home would make a pretty scarf. Colavito took that compliment and made it a business. If she was going to make it happen, then it had to be the best. Her research landed her in Italian silk. Crafting the scarves there also gave her the hand rolled edges that sets quality and luxury apart from mass and machines. Hand rolling takes time, an expert hand roller can produce three scarves an hour. Quality resonates from Colavito’s creations.

Taking the design from the pohotgraph to the scarf is carefully watched over by Colavito. Whether the scarves are Rose Anne Colavito, photographer, and creative designer for floramirris. silky stoles or squares, the fabric is chosen to best highlight the design and the function of the scarf. Elaine Enis, paints anything from abstracts to realistics. She chose to paint a special painting as a hostess gift when she and her husband were invited to a friend’s for a party. And, then she couldn’t get it out of her mind. “It spoke to me,” she says. The original design was actually sketched with glue, then painted over after it dried with a metallic paint to create a 3-D effect. She continued to think about the design and sketched it again; then began to ‘shop’ for a venue she could present it in. She sketched it on burlap and then embroidered over it for pillows. She chose inexpensive jewelry, aluminum cuffs and pendants on a leather strap. But, she still had not found the medium she wanted.

Elaine Enis, hostess gift painting became 'Exclusively Elaine'.

To her, the design symbolizes God’s unending love and it needed to have beautiful expression. She settled into the thoughts of fine jewelry of sterling silver and gold by special order. She learned the business end of jewelry

design and then worked at creating the right pieces. All pieces are made by a company out of Atlanta GA. The chain is sterling silver, that was important to her; the chain had to be the same grade as the pendant. Earrings are being produced with a fish hook design; however, if a clip earring is wanted, it can be ordered. The paintings are also available. “This is my way to share my testimony,” Enis said and so the paintings will be available custom made to fit into any décor. Prints and blank note cards are also available. Exclusively Elaine plans on expanding with other paintings one day, but for now her signature painting has precedence.

Pendants in costume jewelry are affordable at $20.

Blonde, fair skin, slightly warm skin tone, and green eyes, use lilac and darker colors to create a smoky eye.

Warm skin tone, blue eyes to green eyes, will use shades close to their eye color and browns to create a smoky eye.

Vol. 1 Issue 7

THE WORD “SMOKEY” COMES FROM THE IDEA THAT THE EYES ARE ENCIRCLED IN SMOKE AND SMOLDERINGLY ATTRACTIVE. Smoke in reality is in shades from very light to very dark grey to black. Envisioning this, when creating the “Smokey Eye’’, you decide the level of darkness and the depth of drama you would like to create for your look. Keeping in mind that the darker you go the more dramatic and intense, as well as deep set your eyes will look. There is a version called the “Hollywood Smokey Eye” which is simply what I call the variation that all the makeup artists of the Hollywood stars have created. They have chosen colors for the “Smokey Eye” in shades of grey, brown, black, dark forest and emerald greens, navy to steel blues, and all shades of plum. This variety of the look which Hollywood wears so enviably, has given birth to this massive obsession for the “Smokey Eye”.

Movie stars, celebrities, rock stars and even brides of all Cool skin tones will use a lighter shade, highlighted by a deep purple or dark gray to create the ages are donning this look Smoky Eye. Photos on this page by Elizabeth Stobbe

globally. The highly coveted makeup look has women of all ages asking makeup artists everywhere for the “Smokey Eye”, as if by wearing this sultry look they will be transformed instantly to a life of luxury and romance! And really why not! If by just adding some heavy eye shadow and eyeliner you feel glorious then I say go for it. Let’s be transformed! The mystery behind the “Smokey Eye” dates way back to Egyptian Queens like Cleopatra. Her look was sultry and seductive as well as powerful. Women today have adopted this look for these very same reasons, sultriness and seductiveness, with a sense of power. Not power over anyone in particular, but power over ones’ selfconfidence and selfawareness. Women feel beautiful in many different ways and being able to patrisyu patrisyu transform oneself into someone sultry and more alluring in your own eyes by the power of a

makeup brush is quite intoxicating, even if it is only for a day or a few hours. I am a professional makeup artist in a large metropolitan area, and I have many wedding parties, and the most sought after look is the magically transforming “Smokey Eye”. Women of all ages will ask for this, and I will always let them know the many variations of this look, and they will always eagerly fall prey to this dark and mysterious palette of colors. It has become the transformation obsession of the century, especially because so many of our adored movie stars, celebrities and rock stars wear this look so magnanimously. Achieving the “Smokey Eye” does take some practice and technique. There is a graduation of color that needs a proper “eye” to achieve, which includes a very dark application on the lid and at the lash line, to the outer corners and gradually fading out lighter toward the crease, ending with highlight under the brow bone. This equals the continuously replicated and lovingly nicknamed the “Smoked out Look”. Right it sounds easy, but try it if you are not a highly trained professional and it will take hours of practice, the correct brushes and several shades of eye shadow, the perfect liner and an abundance of patience. Or you could just hire a professional makeup artist! Elizabeth Stobbe is a professional makeup artist, skincare specialist and writer in the Detroit metropolitan area. Eric Watson at work creating hats from a by-gone era.

The Quest for an Authentic ‘Indiana Jones’ Hat Creates a True Craftsman

AFTER 8 YEARS OF COLLEGE AND TWO DEGREES, A C OMMERCIAL PILOT CERTIFICATION, AND NO JOB; ERIC

WATSON LEARNED THE TRUE MEANING OF THE PHRASE , “DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND YOU’ LL NEVER WORK ANOTHER DAY.” At the young age of 12 or 13 Watson decided he had to have a hat just like ‘Indiana Jones’, the college professor-action hero of children since the movie franchise first came out in the 80’s. His search landed him in antique stores because he couldn’t find the right one in new hat shops. One shop in particular had been an old mill but now treasures from a bygone era filled the vast spaces. The hat he had found that even Harrison Ford would have to admit was the right one was actually from the 1930’s era and needed much work. So began his schooling on hat making equipment. The old mill had an array of old hat blocks and with a promise to do many chores in the near future, he made those old hat blocks his new treasure. In those hat blocks he had the exact size he needed for his old ‘Indiana Jones’ hat. Soon to follow, hats from 1910-20; he repaired them, re-sewed them, created new hat bands and ribbons. In this process he also learned how to flange the brim (create the curve of the brim). His knowledge grew as he progressed through school. Then, at that moment when he realized he wasn’t getting the promised jobs college counselors told him he would get, he called his Father and told him he needed the old hat blocks.

The Quest for an Authentic ‘Indiana Jones’ Hat Creates a True Craftsman (Continued) Watson began making hats by hand at home, and as his business grew he moved it all to a shop. That was 4 years ago. He has two employees; his Mom who works the retail end, and an expert saddle maker who helps make the leather hat bands. To create a piece of history one needs the right equipment to do it, Watson purchased all the old equipment that is needed to create the quality hats of old. His sewing machine was made in the 1930’s, “It’s all original. These machines were made so they won’t break.” On the off chance that he does have a machine that needs work, he has to hire an expert tradesman to create the part. Watson offers 33 different colors for his beaver pelt felt hats, so the chances are he has what you need. However, if you want that hat you saw in a movie, or perhaps, on your ancestor’s head, simply bring in the photo and he can re-create the hat. To further keep originality within the shop, Watson has an old salesman catalog that he has laminated for you to choose that exact era’s design. He will then make the hat. Turn around for the custom hats are around 12 weeks. A rush order can be done in 30 days, however, it is $100 extra. The process of the development of the felt and the hat itself is the reason for the long time frame. Custom made leather hat bands are sold separately, but well worth it to have your hat definitely yours in every way. Watson’s hats have no pressure points due to their unique design, which results in wearing comfort. Watson designs hats in a regular or long oval, depending on your preferences. Panama Hats are included in the Western and Dress Hats. Due to the hand weaving process for the Panama Hats, they too, take at least a month and maybe longer. Precision, talent, and quality take time. Watson’s Hat Shop is located in Cave Creek, Arizona. Those in the area definitely have an advantage to the custom made hat. Watson realized this, and has

Simple instructions are also located on the website. For your old hats, or great antique hat finds, Watson’s does restoration services, too. Remember, that is how he started; restoring his ‘Indiana Jones’ find! They do complete hat restoration including reblocking, cleaning, new lining, re-flanging, and new leather sweatband. •

One may expect to walk into a shop with a literary name as this and find an eccentric man accompanied by a rabbit in a hurry, however, in this quaint shop in North Carolina you will instead find hats to one’s heart’s content. Accompanied by select teas and other treats to go with the teas, scone mixes and such await you to enter and choose. Mad Hatter does have tea parties, in case you were wondering. Perhaps while planning your next trip through the North Carolina area you might want to plan it around a tea party at the Mad Hatter in downtown Fuquay-Varina (about 30 minutes southwest of Raleigh NC). Dainty tea cups adorn the shop, ready for use. In amongst the one of a kind hats and fascinators that dot the scenery, is an array of goods that epitomizes shopping local. Various teas from locally made to the brand Tea Forte are available. Locally made lotions, sprays, and soaps are among the prizes one finds within the walls of the shops. Locally treasured barbecue sauce, vinegars, and seasonings adorn the shelves. YTC loved this hat shop so very much, we had to feature them in the magazine. Now, flip through and choose your hat for the holidays; and don’t forget the accompanying required tea. Mad Hatter is located at 107 South Main Street in Fuquay-Varina, NC, and may be reached by calling (919) 557-5771.

Introducing, The Fellas: DeltaCapella By Sherry O’Connor Photos by DeltaCapella

TAKE A GROUP OF MEN – ROUGHLY 12 -- FROM DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS AND PROFESSIONS -- ALL BETWEEN THE AGE OF 20 AND 60 -- PUT THEM IN A ROOM – WHAT DO YOU HAVE ? Sounds like a headache to me, BUT let them start singing. Your headache will float away! The vocal band originated in 2007 from the idea of Jay Mednikow. Jay had returned to Memphis to help run his father’s jewelry business and missed singing a cappalla like he had done in college. There was nothing like it in Memphis outside of college. With the help of friends, they starting looking for singers for their first set of auditions -- after which they had a group of 12 men and DeltaCappella was born. It hasn’t been easy and the lineup has changed due to time constraints and expectations for the group, but DeltaCappella withstood the challenges. Their website introduces the individual bios as “the ‘fellas”, which appears quite appropriate – just a group of guys having fun doing what they do. The members of DeltaCappella sing together for the pure

pleasure of singing and one member went as far as to say he would do it even if he wasn’t getting paid. On stage they are fun – singing music that they appreciate the audience singing along or clapping to. That casual attitude on stage is the result of serious practice and a lot of work. Regular practice is once a week, but they have them more often for special events requiring special songs. Many group members have experience with musical theater, choral music, barbershop and church music, but the group is and always has been contemporary. The band is completely vocal -- no instruments ever – so you might be surprised to see a “percussion solo” in their videos. Note the word “vocal” in front of it – it’s amazing what these guys can do. Like most a cappella groups, DeltaCappella performs at local benefit concerts, churches and community concerts, but they have also scored some

FIREWORKS COSMETICS, A MINERAL MAKEUP LINE THAT IS NOT A MAINSTREAM MAKEUP BRAND. Debbie

McAlester fills each order herself, in her shop in an outbuilding on their property in Armory, Mississippi. Her makeup is concentrated, very concentrated. Until you learn how to use it, we recommend putting very little on the brush. It comes in a smaller container than most of us are used to, however, please take into consideration that: 1. There are no fillers in the makeup, you are getting pure foundation. 2. The container is simple, what you see is what you get. The container is not created to give the consumer the feeling of a larger jar when in reality the reservoir is the same size as this one. 3. That’s it. That’s why it is smaller, no bells and whistles.

Moonkissed Foundation Her makeup dismisses the need for concealers in most instances because if you need extra coverage after you have applied the foundation, you just add a bit more over the areas you need. She has eye shadows, blushes, and lipsticks (well, we should say, lip pots, because her lipstick is not in a stick, it is in a pot).

She also has themed seasonal boxes that she sends out full of homemade soaps, tarts, and such. Attention to detail, and one on one with the customer will never go out of style. http://fireworkscosmetics.com/ Apply for an endorsement by having Fashion Critic, Carolyn Bendall and Fashion Academy's international team of Total Image, Retail, or Colour Analysis Consultants review your product.
