Publisher’s Letter

“Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.”

A

As I start to write my letter this month, something continually resonates, as it does almost every year at this time. And so instead if replicating sentiments near and dear – I thought I would just share the real thing – an old classic that never changes, never grows old and never ceases to be full of a more profound truth of the true spirit of this season. Yes Williamson County, there is a Santa Clause and he exists in you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at Robertson Media Group; Johnny, Shelly, Anna, Caitlin, Andrea, Susan, Sarah, Kathy, Gary, Chris, Ron, Johnny Cashmere, Julie the Beauty Junkie, Connie, Krista, Lauren, Erica and the Chef, and the office mascots Queenie, Scarlett and Zelda. “DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON. 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET.”

“He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist... ” FRANICS PHARCELLUS CHURCH

~ “VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.” This special holiday reprint of eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon’s letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial September 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

Citrus at Christmas! C OLONI AL WI LL I AMSBURG DEC OR C OMES TO WI LL I AMSON C OUNTY.

by Chris Carlisle

This holiday season, think about decking your doors with fruit and swags of fresh greenery, or create a majestic portal to your home with wreaths of apples, lemons and pineapple. Imagine spiraling evergreen, mistletoe and boxwood wrapped around every column, tied with bright red pomegranates. We’ve all seen the faux wreaths with plastic poinsettia flowers and foil tinsel, but nothing seems more inviting than fresh boughs of holly, vines of greenery and ropes of magnolia leaves draped with colorful citrus! This style of decorating has evolved over time to become a tradition during the Christmas holiday season in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. Using real fruit as a design element in historical Williamsburg was popularized in the early 1930’s. Tourists come from miles around to visit and participate in walking tours and holiday festivities, just to admire the decorations. Sound familiar? Well, you won’t have to travel that far to see these design elements, because they’re right here in Franklin, Tennessee! I recently met up with Middle Tennessee native Jeff Yates, who’s been decorating with fruit, Williamsburg style, for several years in Franklin. Jeff is a self-taught decorator and has adopted his own eclectic style when decorating doors during Christmastime. He likes to use fresh cut greenery from his family farm in Dickson as the base for his decorations. His unique style creates a fresh sophisticated twist to a long established traditional style. Jeff’s first holiday project was the front of Gallery 202, located in the 14

YOURWILLIAMSON.COM December 2012

historic Clouston Hall at 202 2nd Ave. South in Franklin. Gallery owner Kelly Harwood was delighted to give Jeff the opportunity to create his own yuletide treasure and adorn the front steps leading to the gallery. Jeff has since been invited back to decorate during Christmas and has acquired many projects throughout the city. If you haven’t visited Gallery 202 yet, make it a point to stop by and meet owner Kelly Harwood and manager Jim McReynolds. This is where history embraces art and you may find a most meaningful holiday gift! Remember to participate in the Franklin Art Scene on the first Friday of every month to help support local businesses. Jeff Yates can be contacted at jeffyates@att.net. Memorability... at Westhaven, it’s when a stroll down the sidewalk evokes fond memories of holidays past. Every season displays its own unique beauty at Westhaven, but there’s something truly magical about the holidays. Here, “City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style” is more than a line from a cherished tune … it’s what greets you, just outside your own front door. In this special place where neighbors really do know their neighbors and holiday gatherings are reminiscent of a Currier and Ives print, we invite you to create and recall your own holiday memories. Take a closer look at Westhaven, and you’ll discover the difference is memorability.

Holiday Season The chill in the air reminds us the holiday season is here and while many of us are finalizing our plans to celebrate with family and friends, we are all reminded that the season is here as we are flooded with memories of years past, while thoughts of the new year and new projects, challenges and goals we wish to accomplish dance in our minds. Each year, many of the resolutions set by Americans are to eat better, exercise and live an overall healthier life. You can drive by any fitness facility the first week of January to find the parking lot jammed and the place buzzing. Typically though, by the end of the month the new enthused crowd dissipates, as many fall off the wagon with their newly set goal. We are able to honor and maintain tradition. We put up our holiday tree each year, decorate our homes with garland and lights, bake Christmas cookies and leave a plate of them by the fireplace with a glass of milk for Santa’s arrival…. as we know it will be soon. We watch the same movies over and over again, each time with excitement and anticipation, as if we have never seen them before. Traditions and memories are easy to relive and enjoy each and every year because they have had time build and instead of being a new resolution or change we are trying to include in our lives. Those traditions and memories have longevity. They are common practice. Memorability is the difference at Westhaven. Taking new experiences and turning them into new memories and traditions that will last for years to come. While we are honored to partake in the memories and traditions built over the years by our friends and neighbors, at Westhaven we are excited about the New Year and changes to come to share with our residents and visitors. So come and join us… turn your resolutions into memories with Westhaven. Cheers to your memories and here’s to a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year from your Westhaven family!

The Centennial Holiday Show at Centennial High School was the place to find that unique gift for that someone special. It was the 15th year for the PTSO’s annual craft fair with over 180 vendors showcasing their home made items. HOMES FOR THE

The holidays are upon us and it is very apparent throughout Williamson County that locals are full of Christmas cheer! Homes are decorated inside and out, from stockings on the mantle to twinkle lights on the roof. Williamson County has so many beautiful homes to see this year and one in particular has decked the halls to the nines! This gorgeous house pictured was featured on the “Homes for the Holidays” public tour which was held in Brentwood December 7th-9th. Four estate homes in three Brentwood subdivisions were decorated ‘over the top’ for the holidays by prominent Nashville area designers for this inaugural event. The three-day public home tour event featured unique and lavish holiday décor. Interior designers donated their creative services including Annette Valentine of Valentine Interiors in Brentwood, Tim Causey of ReCreations in Nashville, Kris Bagbey of Bagbey House in Franklin and Lisa Biggers of J.J. Ashley’s in Franklin. Outdoor lighting and decorations were provided by Edward Morales of Above & Beyond. The subdivisions represented were Princeton Hills, Brentwood Country Club and Belle Rive. Designers and homeowners started early to create extraordinary visual displays that showcased their talents. The homeowners were active participants in developing the design concepts and in bringing the concepts to life. Linzi and Kirk McConnell own the beautiful home we photographed this month. They, along with their three children, have lived in Princeton Hills of Brentwood for eight years. They love the area for many reasons, including the proximity to great schools, the convenience to local shopping areas and the interstate and the great friendships we have formed. The architectural style of their home would be best described as ‘Southern Classic’ with an eclectic mix of interior furnishings. Linzi and Kirk have been decorating for the holidays in a big way for several years and have acquired quite a collection of decorations. They continue to add and replace items every season and like to create a few different themes each year. This year, the McConnells have almost forty lighted figurines in the front yard and have seven themed trees throughout their home, as well as small trees in each of their children’s bedrooms. They are absolutely thrilled to participate in the first “Homes for the Holidays” tour and greatly appreciate the hard work the Literacy Council of Williamson County does for our community. 24

PARTY & EVENT PLANNING

Holiday Parties and Cheer! THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF YEAR by Krista Cook and Lauren Hartman

It really is the most wonderful time of the year! Parties, family and having to park a mile away from the mall: what could be better? The holiday party season is quickly approaching and can be quite overwhelming for even the most seasoned hostess. Luckily you have us to help you get started this year! The first thing you want to do is set the tone. Do you want a fancy cocktail soiree or something more relaxed? Themes are great as your guests may be invited to several events on the same night and you need something that will set yours apart from the masses. “White Elephant” or “Dirty Santa” is soooo 2010. Instead, try a “Favorite Things” party with your girlfriends where everyone brings five of an item they can’t live without and then, by drawing names, will award them to five other guests. Everyone goes home with a present and there’s no awkward glares when that one nice gift is stolen for the last time, via passé years. Another over-used trend is the tacky sweater party. Yes, it’s fun to re-use that 1980’s sweater vest and stirrup pants but here’s another option: Invite everyone to pick their favorite holiday movie character and dress up accordingly. Who wouldn’t love a group of Cousin Eddies (Christmas Vacation) clad in their skimpiest bathrobes in their living rooms? Sounds like a party to us! Once you’ve established the genre of your event, the rest is the details. Here are a few tips: - Your job ideally is to make sure everyone is greeted at the door, served a beverage and enjoying themselves. How can you do this if you’re stuck in the kitchen making sure the quiches don’t burn? Two options here: If it’s a casual event, ask your guests to bring their favorite appetizer or dessert to share. Pot-lucking not your style? Have it catered! This is quick, easy and allows you to relax and enjoy yourself. - Make sure you offer lots of drinks and variety. Often these types of parties will include friends from all different circles and having cocktails poured and ready as guests arrive will ease any awkward small talk jitters. Beer, red and white wine are always good stand-bys but also offer your 28

YOURWILLIAMSON.COM December 2012

guests a fun, seasonal punch with cranberries and champagne. You can even do a non-alcoholic version with sparkling grape juice! -Set the ambiance. Light some fragrant Christmas candles, bring out the poinsettias and always have background music! This sets a warm and inviting atmosphere and avoids any unwanted silence during gaps in conversation. Create a playlist, pop in a cd, or use Pandora online radio; just make sure you’ve tailored it to your preferences. The last thing you want is for the barking Jingle Bells dogs to come on during your ode to Tchaikovsky Nutcracker marathon. -Make room for coats and any hostess gifts that will inevitably be brought. People will be bundled up and need space to peel off all those layers. An extra bedroom is always a good go-to but if you have a coat closet near the door, clear it out (leave the hangers!) and help guests hang their coats up. - Don’t forget the bathroom when you’re setting up. Put out mints in a festive candy dish, light another candle (you can never have too many candles) and use disposable hand towels. These are so much nicer than a used, wet hand towel. We like monogrammed ones or you can do holiday themed. -Keep it cool: We know you want to provide a warm environment for your friends and family but don’t let them sweat. When you fill your house with good cheer...and people, it quickly gets WARM! And some of your guests may be wearing that sweater Aunt Ida gave them ten years ago because she’s in town, so keep that in mind when setting your thermostat. Above all else, remember that your guests will take their cue from you. If you’re relaxed and having fun, they will too! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Cheers to you, Krista and Lauren www.yoursouthernsoiree.com hello@yoursouthernsoiree.com

BEAUTY

YOUR BEAUTY & STYLE

Confessions of a Beauty Junkie “All I Want For Christmas”

Ho ho ho, y’all! The glorious holiday season is upon us! I don’t know about you, but at this time of year I always find myself saying, “There has a to be a way to minimize holiday stress. Maybe I’ll get it figured out by next Christmas.” This year I really mean it and I think I have a couple of ideas for you to do the same thing, all while looking and feeling fabulous and not missing out on any of the wonderful times this season has to offer. Pour yourself a hot toddy and settle in, chickadees! The gifts. The shopping for the gifts. The wrapping of the gifts. The mailing of the gifts. Enough already. While I’m all for buying some holiday happies for the children in your family, I’ve found that more joy comes from giving to those in need in lieu of gifts for my fellow grown-ups. The hubs and I have donated to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of our family members in Christmases past and continue to hold this amazing organization near and dear to our hearts. This year I’ve discovered a few more wonderful groups doing pretty awesome work in people’s lives. Compassion International allows you to, with a reasonable donation, give a water filtration system to a family in need for life. For LIFE, a family will have access to clean, safe water-- something I certainly take for granted. There are also options to sponsor a child in need, provide valuable education to women in impoverished areas, even vaccinations for precious little ones. Another group making others’ lives better is Graceworks, based right here in Williamson County. A friend of mine and the hubs’s has partnered with Graceworks to create Our Little Angels, providing all the necessities for new mamas and sweet babies in need in the community (everything from diapers to pack-and-plays).Why not pick up some stuff for Our Little Angels the next time you’re trudging through Target? How about clicking over to Compassion International while you’re cruising the web for holiday deals? Generosity is a beautiful thing, friends! One of my favorite parts of the holidays is the get-togethers with friends and family. In fact, I love it so much that I have my own little shindig every year instead of turning myself inside-out buying something for all of my girlfriends. At “Chickmas,” we laugh and visit over store-bought appetizers and mismatched wine glasses. Is it fancy? No, but it’s always a night filled with quality time with my best gals, which is way more important to me than receiving a little gift or having a clean kitchen. Last year I asked all who attended to bring a canned good for Second Harvest. Girlfriend time AND helping others? Yes, please! Now don’t forget to take care of your fabulous self during this crazy time. Go for a walk, get a massage, pick up a new lip gloss, watch your favorite Christmas movie, whatever it takes to keep you centered and sane. I love love LOVE yoga when life gets hectic and always come away from a class calm and focused. Have y’all tried Steadfast & True Yoga in Edgehill Village or Hot Yoga Plus in Cool Springs? What’s stopping you? All of the teachers at Steadfast are wonderful, providing classes for all walks of life. (I have a total yoga crush on the studio’s owner, Gillian and am not the least bit ashamed of it). Hot Yoga Plus is a great place to sweat out the stress of the season-- if you’re lucky, you’ll land a spot in Keleah’s “Wild Goose” class. She is, quite simply, amazing. If yoga isn’t really your thing, join me to dance your cares away while getting a killer workout at b. fab fitness. Owner Rebecca and her team of instructors offer a hip-hop-meetsZumba party that, for an hour, will make you sweat and smile like no other! Knowing that you’re doing something for others while taking care of yourself and enjoying time with friends and family sounds like a pretty fabulous way to spend the holidays to me, and I guarantee you’ll feel beautiful, inside and out. All of these elements swirl around the most important thing of all-- the reason for the season. Regardless of what holiday you celebrate this time of year, try not to lose sight of why we do what we do and for whom we do it. And with that, here’s to a wonderful holiday season-- Merry Christmas, Williamson County! Love, The Beauty Junkie

A BLANK CANVAS story & photography by K York The New Williamson County Chamber of Commerce, One Williamson One Chamber, kicked off their first event with A BLANK Canvas. Chamber members gathered at Liberty Hall in the Factory to enjoy delicious tastings from some of Williamson County’s finest restaurants and caterers and a special label wine provided by Arrington Vineyards. A blank canvas literally greeted Chamber members upon their arrival inviting them to share their ideas for the direction of the new Chamber. It is an exciting time for Williamson County as the Franklin, Brentwood and Cool Springs Chambers merged in October to work together for the residents of Williamson County.

SELF IMPROVEMENT

YOUR BEST SELF

Holiday Stress By Connie Haley, Life Coach “I love the holidays, but feel overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done. Do you have any suggestions for making the holidays less stressful? Jennifer T. Jennifer, I think we all succumb to the stress of the season in some way, or another. Short of stocking up on egg nog and hiding out until January, there are ways to increase the joy factor of the holidays. It just requires evaluation and a little pre-planning. First off, let go of unreal expectations surrounding this time of year. Anytime we have unmet expectations, we have stress and disappointment. Holiday happiness does not require us to bake every cookie from scratch, or to outdo our neighbors in yard light displays, unless these activities actually bring us joy. Dial down the expectation of doing everything perfect and focus on having fun and making memories. Now, grab paper and pencil and make a holiday “To Do list. Put a star next to the items that you enjoy and ask yourself why. If you can assess the feeling behind the why, even better! Once this list is completed you will have a good overview of what brings you joy and why it brings you joy. This awareness will be the foundation of your holiday planning going forward. For example, let’s say you love decorating the house because it brings out your creative talents and you are left feeling proud. Armed with this information, you can target other activities that foster your creative talents, thereby keeping yourself immersed in the holiday spirit. Do more of the things that are fun for you. Next, focus on the things that feel stressful on the list. Once again, ask yourself the golden “why question. Use this information to evaluate each item: Can it be eliminated this year? (This is a good time to look at your traditions and decide what you want to consciously take forward) Can the task be assigned to a family member? If not, start exploring ways to make the item less daunting. Suppose sending out greeting cards is stressful because you think it is tedious and feels boring. You don’t want to stop sending cards, though, because you like the personal touch of the tradition. Brain storm ways to make this more enjoyable:

-Only send cards to people you don’t see regularly in the year -Play some music, make popcorn and turn it into a fun family project -Send New Years cards instead. The holiday frenzy will be over and the task may seem more agreeable With this simple evaluation completed, you are now an expert on what you love about the holiday season and what you find taxing. Concentrating on the former and discarding or reworking the latter, will help you create the joyful celebration you desire. Good luck and Happy Holidays! FOOD & DRINK

The Chestnut Twist: A PLAY ON A TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY STAPLE by Erica Rains and Executive Chef Chris Rains

photography by Sarah Bailey

The great Mel Torme sat down one hot summer blister of day to ‘cool off’ and wrote some random phrases on his note pad. What came out were ‘Chestnuts roasting,’ ‘Jack frost nipping,’ ‘yuletide carols,’ and ‘jack frost nipping.’ 40 minutes later, “The Christmas Song” was born and chestnuts roasting on an open fire began an entire movement of what Americans really had no idea about before. Turns out the little nuts became a big traditional staple in the holiday rituals, or so it seemed. But let’s think back-how many chestnuts have you actually eaten in recent years during the holidays? If you did eat some (how very Norman Rockwell of you) were they anything else but roasted? You know - on an open fire? The thing is, chestnuts have really been under appreciated. They are absolutely packed with dietary fiber, vitamin C, folates, iron, calcium, magnesium and many other important vitamins and minerals. Bonus: they are also gluten free. With all of this info, the chef and I are thinking we should do much more with the little nuggets of nutrition as we head into another festive time of year. Might as well be healthy and traditional-thanks for the idea Mel Torme! Before diving in, be sure to know what to look for. Chestnuts are cool season crops and are best in (you guessed it) December! Basically anytime from October through March you should be able to find them, as they are harvested in hilly forest regions of North America in addition to some other continents. What you want is a nut with a white meaty inside and avoid any with green spots. They actually like to hang out in the fridge, so just throw them in your veggie draw and tell them they are in for an adventure! First of all, though they are tasty and hearty as a whole roasted nut, by throwing them in a food processor and creating other textures, you are also able to create a plethora of possibilities. Make one Chef Chris Rains’ Lobster and Chestnut Bisque below, and see how many family members are trying to hide being impressed at your witty twist on something so simple. CHEF CHRI S RA INS’ LOBSTER AND CHESTNUT B I S QUE What you’ll need: 2 -pound live lobster or 1.5 pound of lobster tails – both should be easily accessible in your grocer’s seafood department 3 cups heavy cream or whole milk 2 cups (or more) chicken stock 1 bay leaf 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 3 cups vacuum-packed chestnuts (16 ounces) this is the pre-peeled option-ask your produce manager whether they have these. If not, get whole ones, and roast ahead of time in the oven for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Be sure to score them (cut a small ‘x’ in each one) and they should open up and make a popping sound when they are near done. 1/4 cup Madeira wine 1 tablespoon butter Minced fresh chives

Steps to a drooling family for the holidays:  Cook lobster in pot of boiling salted water until shell turns bright red and meat is opaque in center, about 8 minutes. Drain. Transfer lobster to large bowl; cool. Working over same bowl to catch juices, twist off claws. Cut off tail. (Or if you just opted for the tails, part of your work is done for you!) Cut lobster meat from shells. Reserve shells; scrape out green tomalley and discard. Cut meat into 1/2-inch pieces; cover and chill.  Bring milk, 2 cups stock, bay leaf, thyme, and lobster shells with any accumulated juices to simmer in heavy large saucepan. Cover; simmer 10 minutes. Strain into large bowl. Return strained liquid to pan. Add chestnuts; bring to boil. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered until tender, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup in blender.  Bring soup to simmer. Stir in Madeira. Thin with more stock, if necessary, and stir until heated through. Season with salt and pepper.  Meanwhile, melt butter in small skillet over medium heat. Add lobster meat; sauté 1 minute to heat through.  Ladle soup into bowls. Top with lobster meat. Sprinkle with minced fresh chives and serve.

The Chef and I are excited to serve this one with artisan breads at the new location in Lenox Village after their opening on New Year’s Day to continue the holiday spirit into 2013. Stop by for samples and grab a copy of Your Community Magazine while you’re there-we love being your go-to culinary experts! Don’t forget, your chef is only a phone call away for any help while in the kitchen: Call Chef Chris Rains at 615.305.4869 for anything. Guests came to the theatre to enjoy appetizers and wine as “Next Gen” unveiled their new theme which is early 1960s Manhattan. The group finished the night by offering a complimentary screening of the original 1960 film, Ocean’s 11. WITH ANDREA DAVIS Your Williamson’s gal about town for everything arts, culture & leisure

ARTIST: elle dee studio by Lauren Dunn

@YOURAndreaDavis facebook.com/artsandculturealacarte artsandculturealacart.blogspot.com

While browsing the booths at Main Street Festival this year, I stopped to admire some artwork and distressed frames by a local artist. As usual, I had two little boys in tow so I got a card from the artist in the hopes to see more of her work, undistracted. The card ended up in a pile on my desk like so many others, and I just came across it a couple of weeks ago. The artist’s name is Lauren Dunn and I went onto her website to see more of her art. To my surprise, her biography read that she was from a small Mississippi delta town just like me. Of course, I quickly contacted her to set up a time to meet and see the studio. In just a few minutes of meeting with Lauren, I found out that she went to college with my high school best friend. We’re in the same sorority, and we now go to the same church. Needless to say, we became fast friends! Lauren’s Franklin in-home studio is filled with her beautiful artwork. She uses the impasto technique when painting. This technique is where paint is laid on an area of the surface very thickly, usually thickly enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. When dry, impasto provides texture, and the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas. Lauren uses acrylic on wood panels, and many of her pieces are churches inspired by her grandfather, a small

town Mississippi preacher. Lauren also does commission work from pictures. Because her paintings are on wood panels, they can be displayed on their own. However, she makes unique distressed frames that add even more artistic detail and interest to her work. Lauren’s artwork can be found in Nashville at York and Friends Gallery and her frames are at Redo in Franklin and Hot Pink in Brentwood. She also has artwork in many other towns across the South and plans to expand. Meeting Lauren was such a pleasure, and I’m so happy to know that there is another “delta girl” living right around the corner! Follow Lauren Dunn on Facebook and visit her site at www.elledeestudio.com. 54

MUSIC: Shahnaz Before having children of my own, I volunteered at Franklin High School as a Young Life leader. Within Young Life, small groups are formed, and I was blessed to lead an incredible group of girls who will always hold a very special place in my heart. One of those girls was Meghan “Shahnaz” Kabir. When she could get a break in her busy schedule of singing, writing, dancing and studying to graduate early, Meghan would come to our meetings and share her authentic kind spirit. When I think of Meghan now, the word EXQUISITE comes to mind. Since high school, Meghan has accomplished so many amazing things and is still just getting started in what I believe will be a life long successful career. At the age of 24, she has already had her songs on television shows such as The Hills, The City, and Victorious. American Idol’s Chris Allen is recording one for The Biggest Loser, and she had a song recorded by Selena Gomez in the movie Ramona and Beezus. Most recently, her song “People Like Us” was chosen to be on Kelly Clarkson’s next album and will be released sometime in January. I’m sure there will be lots of iTunes gift cards in Christmas stockings this year so put that one on your list to download! The “Shahnaz” in Meghan’s name comes from her father who is from Afghanistan. She is now using that as her name and forming a brand with it. She feels it is global like her music. Meghan has recorded songs in Farsi, one of the languages spoken in Afghanistan, and she was nominated there for best new artist. In addition to writing and singing, Meghan has started a jewelry line that came about from her wanting to custom tailor pieces to her style. She wants the jewelry to have a life of it’s own, but it is inspired by her music. She custom designs some of the pieces with her lyrics on them. Meghan’s favorite lyric is “We are all misfits living in a world on fire”. It’s about owning who you are. Meghan came to a point in high school where she didn’t fit in anymore. She wrote the song to unite other misfits in her situation. She says that music is such a spiritual connection. Meghan “Shahnaz” Kabir’s music is timeless, positive, colorful and inspiring. She is able to paint a vibrant picture with her words, and her soulful sound can transport you to a better place. It’s not always easy putting yourself out there, but Meghan stays authentic to who she is. I am certainly inspired…

THEATER: The Pull-Tight Theatre’s It’s A Wonderful Life If you have never been to a show at the Pull-Tight Theatre in Franklin, it is a must. The intimate atmosphere is unlike any other. I went to my first show there a few months ago, and now I am hooked. I love community theater and the Pull-Tight does it very well. I was able to go to a rehearsal of this month’s production of It’s A Wonderful Life to see a little of the performance and also get to know JT Landry. The Brentwood resident and Belmont alum is making his debut as a producer, as he usually is an actor. He was approached about producing by his friend, Justin McIntosh, who is directing the show. JT loves the classic story and wanted to be a part of something really special for Christmas. From what little I have seen, the sold-out show will be special indeed. Fortunately, I got my tickets just in time. Seeing a show, going to a rehearsal and just being a part of the process in general has definitely given me the acting bug. It’s been a long time since I’ve been on stage to do anything other than sing, and I find myself really missing the acting part lately. There are some great shows coming up this season at the Pull-Tight. Stay tuned to see if I will be making my own debut… December 2012 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM

It’s a

I bet you’ve already decided on your resolution for next year. Lose weight? Eat healthier? Quit smoking? Save money? Maybe even all of the above? So what’s your plan for the next week? Party, indulge, eat and drink like it’s your last meal and lay around while you still can? We all love to have a “start date.” That day when we start something new, re-start doing what we should, or get back on the wagon. A start date somewhere in the future gives us hope. We look forward to it with anticipation of the changes it brings and just know that when the day comes we will face it with all the motivation and determination of a thoroughbred at the starting stall. Planning for New Year’s resolutions is fun but rarely successful. According to research conducted by author Stephen Shapiro, only 8% of people are always successful in keeping their resolutions. How many times have you started your new diet, bought a new running suit, or thrown that last pack of Marlboro Lights in the trash? The problem I’ve had with start dates is the simple fact that the longer I wait to start (insert resolution here) the more my motivation wavers. Statistically, people who set resolutions are more likely to make positive changes in their life in general. However, when we put the start date off into the future, we give ourselves permission to let go now, ultimately communicating to our subconscious that these changes aren’t important enough to make today. Resolutions and start dates encourage a diet mentality, making the changes much easier to drop when they are no longer convenient or exciting. Big changes require small steps, taken consistently. Today, pick just one thing to do to move you towards your goals. If you can’t think of anything, here are a few suggestions.

Wonderful Life

-Eat a carrot. If your resolution is to eat healthier, start today by adding just one thing, a carrot (or two), an apple, or other veggie of your choice.

adapted by James W. RodgeRs based on the film by fRank CapRa

-Make an appointment. Call your doctor and make that appointment for your physical, smoking cessation plan, or cholesterol screening.

Show runs Nov. 30 - Dec. 15.

-Call a friend. Sharing your plans with a like-minded friend can help improve your success in reaching your goals.

Purchase TickeTs Beginning nov. 19! Go to www.pull-tight.com any time, or call 791-5007 Tuesday-Friday, 10 am-4 pm.

Discover a treasure.

-Pack a bag. If your resolution is to exercise, put some workout clothes in a bag and put them in the passenger seat of your car so that on your way home you will be reminded to stop at the gym or the park.

Successfully accomplishing one small step each day will help propel your motivation towards the next small step. So whatever your desire, go ahead and make that resolution. But don’t wait for January 1st... make today your start date!

The Cashmere family had a great Thanksgiving and we hope your family did, too. It’s hard to believe its December and just a few weeks from Christmas; this time of year is a fun time around our house, as the kids are now the perfect age to help decorate, but still young enough to enjoy the innocence of being a child. In fact, they have three elves that are constantly on the move and they enjoy the mystery of where they’ll end up next. I have to admit, I enjoy it, too... I had the pleasure of visiting with three movers and shakers in Williamson County for this months Q&A; Dana Katterjohn of CBL Properties (CoolSprings Galleria) and Ames & Sherrin Krebs of Franklin Horse Supply. I enjoyed getting insight into one of the state’s most prestigious mall properties in CoolSprings Galleria and then spending the day with the owners of Middle Tennessee’s Premier Equestrian Lifestyle Center. Shopping and Horses - great topics just in time for Christmas. Keep these businesses in mind as you prepare to fulfill various wish lists this Christmas - Merry Christmas from the Cashmere family...

Q&A with Dana Katterjohn of CBL Properties (CoolSprings Galleria) JC: Dana, as the regional marketing director for CBL Properties, tell our readers a little about your role and responsibilities, how large of a market you cover, etc. DK: As the Regional Marketing Director, I coordinate the marketing and communications for 16 regional shopping centers and additional associated centers. I oversee a four person team, who along with me, coordinate media, advertising, public relations, experiential events such as Santa Claus and social media for properties in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. JC: CoolSprings Galleria recently hosted the Rockettes during Santa’s arrival, that’s a big deal for our area, it must have garnered a huge audience. DK: We had another great turn out this year for the Rockettes welcoming Santa to CoolSprings Galleria. The local community loves this event and it really kicks off the Holiday season. We are always excited to partner with the Radio City Rockettes and get the festivities started! JC: Now to brag on you and your team a little, you recently won a Maxi Award, that is the Academy Award in the mall industry, can you tell us a little about this accomplishment and how it came about? DK: CBL and Coca-Cola partnered to spread happiness throughout their respective communities. The Nashville Region worked with Chemo Duck, an organization founded to help pediatric cancer patients in dealing with their fears. The results were astounding, the CBL Nashville Region presented a check for $30,000 to Chemo Duck, which provided 1,200 Chemo Ducks for children living with cancer. JC : Tell us about the new stores that arrived at CoolSprings Galleria in 2012 - some big names are now welcoming shoppers from all over the region and beyond, that’s exciting!

DK: This has been a great year for CoolSprings Galleria. In 2012, Apple, J.Crew, White House | Black Market,

Ann Taylor, Clarks, ALDO and Pandora all opened and additional stores are coming in 2013. We continue to enhance the shopping center with stores requested by our shoppers that complement our existing retail line up. Any time we can bring in stores the shoppers want, we feel we have succeeded in adding value and convenience for our guests. JC: The Christmas holiday usually sees stores staying open a bit later than usual, can you tell us what special hours CoolSprings Galleria will be having in December and when those special hours begin? DK: Starting Saturday, December 8, the mall will open one hour earlier than usual each day and close one hour later, then on Monday, December 17 the mall will be open from 8am10pm thru Saturday, December 22; Sunday, December 23 from 9am-8pm; and Monday, December 24 7am-6pm. We are closed on Tuesday, December 25. We will re-open for post Christmas shopping at 8am - 9pm on Wednesday, December 26. JC: CoolSprings Galleria has had some of it’s stores such as Williams-Sonoma featured on TV, Talk of the Town, specifically, the retailers have to embrace the way you and your team help promote them, in and around the community. You also recently had several holiday items featured to promote gift ideas - are there any specific gift ideas you want to suggest to our readers? DK: There is something for everyone at CoolSprings Galleria. From the latest technology at Apple to gorgeous baubles at Pandora to home entertaining gifts and ideas at Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn, guests will find something for everyone on their list this holiday season. JC: Thank you for your time, Dana I’ve had fun hanging out at CoolSprings Galleria today - I ate, did some shopping and got a massage - time to do a little more shopping ~ you’ll be seeing a lot of me around here with shopping bags in hand... DK: Please come out anytime, and be on the lookout for even more new store announcements coming soon!

truly is a one stop shop for all things equestrian. You even have feed - this is the most complete Tack Store I’ve ever seen. How does your team determine the mix of inventory?

Sherrin and Ames Krebs Q&A with Ames and Sherrin Krebs of Franklin Horse Supply JC: Wow! Ames and Sherrin, Franklin Horse Supply has fast become the go to place for any/all equestrian needs You’re also the owners of the Franklin and Columbia Kubota dealerships, can you tell our readers a little about what makes Franklin Horse Supply special and tell a little about how the idea for the store came about... AK/SK: Well Johnny, we are the only locally-owned tack shop in Franklin, and that makes us unique. We also are a feed store. We offer products and services that cater to the needs of the modern horse enthusiast and we are growing every day. We just launched dubarry of Ireland boots and apparel, as well as Smathers and Branson needlepoint products, and we are building our inventory of hunt apparel. And Sherrin and I are really trying to create a store that not only meets the needs of the local horse-loving community, but also inspires our customers to ride more and get their children and friends involved in riding. I hope that our enthusiasm as a family and as an organization is apparent to everyone who walks in the door at Franklin Horse Supply.

JC: I have a great friend who’s daughter rides hunter/jumper and fox hunts and all she talks about is your store, she says it’s a blast just going there...and she’s only eleven. What makes Franklin Horse Supply so fun for kids? AK/SK: I think it is just a fact that when a young person enjoys riding, they love their horse. And when they love their horse, their enthusiasm for anything that makes their riding experience more enjoyable, or makes their horse more comfortable or more beautiful, is practically without limit. So it is very common for young people to just gush about their experience at Franklin Horse Supply. We have a young staff that loves to ride and care for their horses, and they all enjoy the enthusiasm of the young folks that visit us. We all know that enthusiastic young riders are the key to the future of our industry, and we will do anything in our power to make their experience a positive one. A case in point is the upcoming event we are having on December 6th Hot Chocolate and a Story with Santa and Mrs Claus. We hope your readers will come out for this wonderful event. JC: As I shop around your store, I see that you have both english and western riding items and accessories. This

AK/SK: Our approach to inventory is to order items that our staff, as experienced horsemen, know will be needed by the many disciplines that our customers participate in. We also order many items, and indeed entire lines, such as dubarry of Ireland and Smathers and Branson needlepoint products, because they are things that Sherrin and I would like to have. If we think they are desirable, we are betting others will as well. We want to offer products that are not available anywhere else in our area. One thing we have learned from our equipment business is that quality sells itself. JC: Does Franklin Horse Supply have a mobile version of the store that travels to horse shows, rodeo’s, etc? If so, what geographical radius does Franklin Horse Supply cover from a travel standpoint? I can see how a mobile version of the store would be popular wherever it popped up...

polo player. Sherrin and I are vocal proponents of building a polo venue at Harlinsdale Farm, and we hope that plans move forward quickly to make that a reality. If it does, Franklin Horse Supply will be a sponsor of the polo instruction programs that will be a big part of polo at Harlinsdale. Bringing polo to Harlinsdale would be a great addition to the social and sporting life of our community. JC: Thanks for your time, Ames and Sherrin. I’ve had a blast at Franklin Horse Supply and this new needlepoint flask I just picked up here will come in handy this winter. AK/SK: Sherrin and I are pleased to see you again, Johnny. You are looking dapper as always. But as I told Catherine Darnell many years ago: “You should have worn tweed.” The weather is perfect for it... and don’t forget ~ “We get you Ready to Ride!”

AK/SK: We do have a mobile tack store, and our customers are never surprised to see us at their favorite event. Please stop by when you see us out in the field. JC: It’s definitely not hard to see why you’re Middle Tennessee’s Premier Equestrian Lifestyle Center - it truly is a Lifestyle Center and it feels good just being there - you have brands such as Smathers and Branson Needlepoint, DuBarry of Ireland and numerous well known and trusted brands in the industry. I can even see non-riders wearing some of these fashionable items - I bet you get your fair share of shoppers that just appreciate the quality and craftsmanship of the products you sell. AK/SK: We do have customers come in every day who either no longer ride or have never ridden a horse. Most residents of our area live here because they love the land and the country lifestyle, and our apparel, boots and gift items reflect that lifestyle. It never surprises me to have customers come in who just appreciate the quality and timeless elegance of many of the items that we sell. JC: In closing, are there plans for Franklin Horse Supply to add any items that pertain to additional equestrian related sports? I know that you’ve recently added an enormous amount of items for the foxhunting community. AK/SK: We are adding a line of hunt apparel, as we speak, so that our foxhunting customers have a local shop to patronize. We are also planning to add equipment and apparel for the

After a career in the financial services industry spanning 25 years, Franklin resident Jim Payne is optimistic about turning over a new leaf at 50 years old. Payne recently brought the first Welcomemat Services concept to Tennessee. The marketing and technology strategies company provides direct-mail gift checks specifically to new residents to help them get acclimated to their neighborhood. Payne’s desire to be a small business owner was ignited while he was working on his MBA at Vanderbilt University more than 10 years ago. It wasn’t until earlier this year, however, that he saw the opportunity to pursue his passion. Payne moved 10 times over a 20 year period while in the corporate world, so he immediately saw the value for locally owned businesses to reach out to new families. “I’m very excited to be starting this new phase of my professional life,” said Payne. “For the past 10 years I have considered branching out on my own and I truly believe the timing was just perfect to do so. Welcomemat has provided me with an excellent product that is designed to help locally owned businesses. I look forward to serving my community in a new way outside of the banking world.” Welcomemat helps the local community on two levels. First, it helps small business owners steadily build a stream of fresh loyal customers, ultimately growing the business and helping the local economy. A recent Zillow Mover Study (http://www.zillow.com/blog/2012-08-15/zillow-mover-study-movers-spend-thousands-on-cars-tvs-cellphones-etc/) showed that 21% of movers spent $10,000 or more on move related purchases. The study also showed that the process of moving can make consumers more likely to switch brands of household items as well as dine and entertain more frequently. Second, it helps individuals and families get acclimated to their new environment by helping them build loyal relationships with high-quality local businesses. Payne’s location services all zip codes in Middle Tennessee. As president of the board of directors for Franktown Open Hearts, a local ministry that aims to help inner-city youth, Payne is already deeply rooted in community initiatives and views the Welcomemat concept as another way to get involved. Welcomemat works by sending personalized packages of gift certificates to new residents that they can use at local businesses. Targeting the new resident segment and providing them with the services and products to fill their daily needs helps drive an influx of new repeat customers to local shops and businesses. Patented technology enables new resident information to be bar-coded onto every certificate, allowing local businesses to receive free, customized tracking and information reports regarding their offers. After a customer uses a gift certificate, the business returns it to Welcomemat. The bar code is scanned and the resulting information is provided back to the business in an easy-to-read data sheet profiling the client’s new customers and providing demographics such as the customer’s name, gender and income level. Welcomemat uses data from more than 35 sources to locate newcomer addresses. New residents receive their Welcomemat package within 30 to 90 days of moving in, depending upon how quickly the consumer changes their address information. Offers include such things as free dry cleaning, complimentary haircuts or free car washes sent to thousands of new families in various communities each year. Welcomemat began franchising in 2010 after receiving nearly $2 million in capital investment from private investors. Welcomemat has 12 franchised locations as well as corporate-operated offices in Atlanta, Charlotte and Greenville, S.C. Projections call for the opening of 12 franchise locations in 2013 toward a goal of opening 200 locations during the next five years in high-profile, transient markets across the country. The Salvation Army Angel Tree program In its final days and while nearly 6,000 angels have been adopted, nearly 4,000 more are still in need. These 4,000 represent children and seniors in the Nashville area that are in need of basic items such as clothing, and the simple gift of a toy to brighten the Holiday season. Angel Trees are located at Cool Springs Galleria RiverGate, and The Mall at Green Hills, with thousands of tags noting wish lists and necessities for children and seniors. Local Franklin businesses have also teamed up to offer $30 gift cards per business to the first 30 people that show their Angel Tree tags and/or the gift receipts or gifts themselves. After Dec. 9, shoppers will have to show their receipt and/or a photo of them dropping off their gifts at the Angel Tree booths. Participating Franklin businesses include: JONDIE Boutique, located at 407 Main St., Cookie Crumb Company, located at the Cool Springs Galleria; A Moment’s Peace Salon & Day Spa located at 9050 Carothers Pkwy. “We are thrilled to be able to support the Angel Tree program,” said Rebecca Davis, owner of JONDIE Boutique. “It’s a unique and fun way to reward those that are generously shopping for others in our community that are in need of necessities such as clothing and the simple joy of a new toy.”

Happy Tales and Happy Tales Humane For those who want to spread the Christmas spirit to animals, there are a number of options. Happy Tales located at 1001 Creeekside Crossing #700 in Brentwood, is hosting a photo day on Dec. 8th from noon until 4 p.m. Those who choose to pay for a photo of their pet with one of Santa’s Elves, will be making a donation to Happy Tales Humane, a non-kill shelter. Also at the store is a giving tree, similar to the Angel Tree for humans. This one is for Happy Tales Humane and all items purchased will be given to the shelter. Residents simply have to come to Happy Tales and take a paw print off the tree. For more information about Happy Tales Humane, call (615) 791-0827 or visit www.happytaleshumane.com. The shelter is located at 230 Franklin Road, Suite 1303 in Franklin.

GraceWorks During the holidays, GraceWorks arranges for food boxes to be delivered to registered families that include the ingredients for a Christmas dinner, as well as staples for the pantry. Additional Christmas assistance programs include: Forgotten Angel Tree: The Salvation Army Nashville Area Command has partnered with Daily’s Convenience Stores to add to our Christmas Angel Tree Assistance program a Forgotten Angels Shop. Of all the angels expected to register for Angel Tree, thousands may end up unadopted. To ensure that each special angel receives Christmas assistance, we have created a forgotten angels shop. Look for our ‘Forgotten Angel’ trees in all Daily’s and Twicedaily Markets. Kroger Food Angels: Kroger and WSMV - Channel 4 have partnered to provide The Salvation Army Food Angel program. This holiday season while you are shopping in Kroger, be sure to pick up a Kroger Food Angel off the tree, located in front of the stores. You can provide a holiday dinner for an Angel Tree Family by simply taking a Food Angel tag to the cash register; the cashier will scan it and $25.00 will be added to your grocery bill. Know that your donation goes to a family in the form of a direct Kroger Gift card valued at $25.00 which can help provide several meals for a family this holiday. Angels on the Air: Mix 92.9 and Waller Law present “Angels on the Air” this holiday season. While listening to Mix 92.9 FM folks will have the opportunity to call in and adopt angels. The morning crew - Anna, Kim and Clint- in addition to their other around-the-clock DJ’s - will daily read several specific angels’ needs on air so that loyal listeners will have opportunity to adopt 400 angels this year. U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program: The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future. The principal Toys for Tots activity which takes place each year is the collection and distribution of toys in the communities in which a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be conducted by a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys for Tots campaign. Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toys and monetary donations.
