Dear Readers,
MA
A
s we present to you our third edition of Distinctively Southern Wedding – I have just recently visited with my grandmother, who turns ninety years old this summer. She and my grandfather – who passed away several years ago – had been married over six decades. When we think about weddings, most of us think about love, commitment and til death do us part. Sometimes, that part doesn’t always come true…but when we enter into marriage, it typically is done with a heartfelt desire and intent, to be with this person for the rest of our lives.

Thinking about my grandparents, not only was that sentiment true on the day they married, it was true til death. And even beyond. My grandmother is still married to my grandfather, and until her own death – will be. That’s what weddings represent isn’t it? The commitment, the celebration of love and the idea of until death do you part. That’s why they are so special and so important in our world – a day of beauty and hope.
- Richard and Anna Margaret Giles -
I see all the beautiful couples we showcase in this issue – the issue of real brides – and my own heart is filled with such love. For these weddings, and the uniting of these individuals, fill our pages with true love stories and real-life stories of celebration. That is what we wanted in this issue – to show real brides and grooms and each of their unique days and stories. Of course, each ceremony, reception, flowers, gowns and all the trappings – are distinctively southern. We hope you enjoy another issue and we look forward to continuing to tell your love stories and showcase your special days in the future!

TIFFANY
THE TIFFANY ENGAGEMENT STORY
The engagement ring as we know it today, and the romantic traditions that surround it, are in large part the creation of world-renowned jeweler Tiffany & Co. Diamonds have long been an expression of affection and power. But it was Tiffany & Co. that turned these gems into the most exquisite and dazzling jewelry the world has ever seen. Tiffany’s insistence on absolute perfection produced diamonds of superior beauty. Each is a symbol that is worthy of true love and the promise of a lifetime of shared happiness together. With the introduction of the Tiffany® Setting in 1886, founder Charles Lewis Tiffany started a trend that grew into a cherished custom. This innovative setting lifts the diamond off the band into the light, maximizing the stone’s natural radiance. It remains the world’s most beautiful diamond ring and a popular symbol of true love, celebrated in literature, art and film.
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 14
THE TIFFANY DIAMOND STANDARD
Tiffany’s diamond standards are far more stringent than those established by the industry. The jeweler accepts only .02 percent of gem-quality stones, which are graded at the Tiffany Gemological Laboratory, one of few such facilities operated by jewelry retailers. The laboratory’s master diamond graders give individual grades for cut, color, clarity, carat weight and presence. In the process, other diamond reports are frequently overruled.
These top-tier diamonds are placed in the hands of skilled diamond cutters who cut for brilliance, adhering to a strict geometric plan with exacting measurements, including precision of cut and symmetry. Together these factors give Tiffany diamonds their extraordinary presence: a breathtaking show of light, with utmost dispersion and scintillation created, when light enters the stone, reaching the perfectly positioned facets and mirrored directly back through the crown.
THE PROCESS IN SELECTING AN ENGAGEMENT RING
The selection and purchase of an engagement ring celebrates one of life’s most important moments, reflecting the love and commitment a couple has for one another. It is not only important to select a ring and diamond based on the popular 4 C’s, but on the “presence” as well. Particular attention should be paid to the precision of cut, the symmetry and the polish, which together influence the diamonds brilliance and overall appearance, as well as ethical sourcing methods. Remember to think long term. Engagement rings and weddings bands will last a lifetime and the style of it should reflect the taste and personality of the wearer. The possibilities are endless at Tiffany & Co., whether choosing a ring from our five icons or another of the many unique styles. Whichever it may be, know that by choosing a Tiffany & Co. diamond, you are selecting some of the most brilliant diamonds in the world.
THE FIVE ICONS
See the latest wedding trends and find inspiration by following us on Instagram at @distinctivelysouthernwedding and liking Distinctively Southern Wedding on Facebook. Share your distinctively southern wedding day with us too!
In addition to the Tiffany Setting, there is the Lucida®, an exclusive diamond cut with a setting of clean, sensuous curves. The diamond’s square mixed-cut shape combines the classic elegance of a step-cut crown and a brilliant-cut pavilion. Together these two faceting styles strike a balance between period cutting, with an emphasis on line, and modern-style cutting, with an emphasis on brilliance. Tiffany Novo®, a brilliant cushion cut inspired by the faceting of the famed Tiffany Diamond, epitomizes style now and for all time, with every subtlety of chic and originality brought to stunning fruition. Set in a customized mounting of four sleek, tapered prongs, the diamond generates an extraordinary show of light. Tiffany Soleste® is a cushion modified brilliant diamond encircled by a double row of exquisite bead-set diamonds. And Tiffany Harmony is a round diamond in a tapered platinum setting that is coupled with a contoured wedding band of impeccable style. Additional masterpieces from Tiffany & Co. include Tiffany Legacy®, Tiffany Grace, Tiffany Bezet, Tiffany Etoile and Tiffany Embrace. To learn more and see more stunning designs, visit tiffany.com. Haley Stillings & Winston Voigt DECEMBER 15, 2018 Both natives of Williamson County, Haley Stillings and Winston Voigt, met on their first day of at Belmont University’s Accelerated Nursing Program in the fall of 2014. They began their courtship in the winter of 2015. On the 15th of December, surrounded by loved ones, they wed at First Presbyterian Church of Nashville. Festivities for the weekend began Friday evening with an elegant rehearsal dinner, hosted by the Voigt family, in the ballroom at Belle Meade Country Club. Holiday decorations adorned the ballroom and tables. On Saturday, at five-thirty that evening, Bach’s Bist du bei mir (Abide with Me), played on the church’s magnificent pipe organ as the bride was escorted down the aisle by her father, Tim Stillings. Pastor Todd Jones and Reverend Mark Price officiated a traditional wedding ceremony in the elegantly decorated sanctuary. During the ceremony, the bride and groom knelt at the altar upon a needlepointed wedding kneeler originally made by the grandmother of the groom for use in the wedding of the groom’s parents. Photos of the newly married couple and their families were held immediately after the ceremony and were captured by Jordyn Smalling Photography. Bridesmaids could be seen wearing their choice of Adriana Papell gown in neutral tones while the flower girl beamed in an antique lace dress handcrafted by Missy Voigt, mother of the groom. The reception was held at The McConnell House in downtown Franklin, with catering by Red Pony Catering. The historic venue is the converted Franklin jail with multiple levels, a bridal suite and exposed brick throughout the building. Approximately 200 guests were treated to a station-style buffet while live music was performed by The Flashbacks Show Band of Huntsville, Alabama. A decadent, three-tiered, buttercream frosted cake was provided by Lizzie Davis of Copper Whisk Cakes and was displayed in the foyer. Guests danced and mingled through the night between toasts and traditional first dances. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts lined the exit as the guests filed outside for the sparkler send off. The couple left early the following morning for their honeymoon in Castries, St. Lucia.

3 Steps to Finding the Perfect Wedding Venue BY CJ DICKSON
As a venue owner and wedding planner, I meet with couples every day who are very stressed about finding the right wedding venue. To help make the selection process as easy as possible while still having fun along the way, I am sharing my three-step process to finding the perfect venue for your big day. STEP 1: GET ORGANIZED Before you schedule your first venue visit, do a little bit of homework and get organized. This will go a long way and help you keep your priorities and budget in line. It’s important to have three key pieces of information in place: • The Guest List • Wedding Date(s) • Budget Yes, I know, these are pretty big things and they require a lot of work. But they don’t have to be perfect at this point. Some of these things may change as you get further into planning. But before you start considering venues, it’s important to have ballpark ideas of the “who,” “when” and “how.” STEP 2: DO YOUR RESEARCH One of the great things about planning a wedding these days is how much information is available to you 24/7 online, but that alone can make the process seem overwhelming. Don’t stress! This is actually a good thing and by doing your research online first, you will save a ton of time in the long run. Start by visiting venue websites to see what appeals to you visually. Don’t spend too much time going into details at this point.
You’re just looking for a vibe or sense of the space and what they offer. If you like what you see, pin or bookmark the venue in your browser. You will be coming back in a few days to dig into more details. Try to have at least five venue options, but no more than ten. Once you have this list, it’s a good idea to share these with your fiancé to get their input. If there are any other key players in the planning process such as a close friend or family member, it may be helpful to share with them as well. However, I caution you not to invite too many cooks into the kitchen. One or two outside opinions from people you love and trust is really all you need. Now that you have a better idea of what types of event spaces might be a good fit, it’s time to dig into the details. Revisit the venue websites and look for the following: • Check availability • Check pricing • Look at photos - use the Google “images” tab to see more than just what the venue has on the website • Check reviews (sites like Google, Yelp, The Knot are an excellent sources of reviews). Based on the information above, there should be a handful of event spaces that start to look really promising. Take your short list to your fiancé or a trusted family member and discuss pros and cons of each. Give yourself a few days to discuss options and together, select your top three to five to visit in person.
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 18
Pro Tip: Calling the venues on your short list can be the fastest way to check availability, as well as a great way to get a good feel for the personality of the people who work there. STEP 3: VISIT EACH VENUE I usually recommend visiting at least three venues, but no more than five because venue visits are really time consuming! With drive time and the tour itself, you are looking at, at least a few hours of your time per visit. It can also become overwhelming to visit a lot of spaces. Details start to blur together and those feelings of overload will start to creep in. Pro Tip: Many venues are not available for tours on the weekend due to their event schedules. If you can find a way to visit on a weekday, you can usually get in much faster and have the undivided attention of the sales manager. Don’t forget to have some fun with the venue visits. Make it like a date rather than a chore. When couple’s schedule a visit at my venue, CJ’s Off the Square, I always suggest that they grab a drink or a bite to eat at one of the nearby restaurants in downtown Franklin immediately after. This gives the couple time to stay connected throughout the planning process as well as to discuss the pros and cons of the space they just visited. Once you have visited at least three spaces, you should have a good idea of which venue is going to be the right fit. Run this past your key players one last time and if you get the green light, book that perfect venue right away!

Fall 2019 Wedding Trends
BY KRISTA EHRET
O
ne of the things that I enjoyed the most about designing events in the wedding industry was that the trends were constantly changing. Just about the time you felt like you couldn't even look at one more mason jar, bam! recycled wine bottle glasses would come out of nowhere and switch things up. Colors, florals, wedding dresses, everything updates each season. That is the great thing about trends. However, there is a darker side of trends as well. We're talking about the ones that are beyond stunning in that one (very much staged) Pinterest photo, but don't translate so well in real life. Here are some trends for fall 2019 and tips on how to make them work for your big day.
Moodier Color Palettes
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 20
The Pantone color of the year is living coral, which is just as bold as it sounds. This hue will carry over into the fall, but in a slightly darker tone. Edgier color schemes including midnight blues, gray, plum and burgundy set great backdrops for a pop of the lively coral.
Smoke Bomb Getaways Colorful smoke bombs have become popular to use during the getaway. I have lots of apprehension on this one. The good: they create an awesome photo moment. The bad: you have to use them during the day (or have some great night-time lighting), they can burn holes in clothes and also stain. Personally, I would use these in an engagement photo shoot where you don’t run the risk of ruining your wedding gown or triggering a guest’s asthma.
Velvet
Royal Wedding Inspired
Velvet is a wonderful texture for a fall wedding. It adds a richness that is unmatched and a little can go a long way. Think table runners, bow ties and the bride's shoes for a subtle pop versus draping your tables, bridesmaids and guests in such a heavy garb. One thing worth mentioning is that you will have a “grain” so to speak, as in the fabric will look different if you run your hand across it. Make sense? If you tend to run on the OCD side, just be aware of this ahead of time.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were wed over a year ago, but the influence of their big day remains. Simple wedding dresses, traditional sit-down reception dinners, natural makeup and dramatic floral arches will be prevalent.
Pampas Grass From bouquets and centerpieces, to aisle markers and beyond, pampass grass has made its way into every facet of wedding décor. It's easy to see the appeal. The dramatic, feathery look makes quite an impression and it goes with any color palette. Vellum Paper Goods The word vellum instantly transports me back to design school. If you're not familiar with the paper, it's very very thin and transparent. It's trending now as an overlay for fancy invitation suites.
Personal Scents You want your wedding to be an experience for both you and your guests. You go to great lengths to create a certain atmosphere with colors, lighting, food, music and décor. It only makes sense that now another of your five senses will come into play: scent. Many couples are creating custom scented candles to include at the ceremony and reception. Aromatherapy can definitely make a lasting impression and I love this idea! I would go with the “less is more” approach however, as you don't want to induce any headaches among your partiers.
Some other trends to consider wearable florals (such as arm bands, necklaces, and hair pieces), gin cocktails, ceremonies in the round, dramatic and unique lighting and statement wedding cakes.

JUNE 8, 2019
Mary Michael Jaquess and James William Cross V were married on the 8th of June in Fairhope, Alabama. The couple was married by Mark Price in the Point Clear Church, St. Francis at The Point. Immediately following the ceremony, guests took a trolley to the Grand Hotel Marriot Resort. Cocktail hour began on a patio at the hotel overlooking Mobile Bay, where guests enjoyed a beautiful sunset. The evening continued as doors were opened to dinner and dancing in the ballroom. The ballroom was covered in greenery with white and light pink flowers, gold touches and a greenery chandelier hanging over the dance floor. Az Izz band entertained as they began the evening with jazz and swing standards, and then progressed the energy to Motown, 80s, 90s and into current top hits. The band had everyone on their feet dancing, while they enjoyed the bride’s favorite late night treat, tambourines and light up dance floor attire. The couple exited the ballroom through a tunnel of family and friends throwing white rose petals. The bride and groom enjoyed a beautiful escape to Italy following their wedding.

Angela Beth Balser & Donavin Heusser Angela Beth Balser felt her sweet romance with Donavin Heusser was like a fairytale. The proposal was even perfect. Donavin enlisted the help of Angela’s friends to propose on the eighteenth green of the Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club where she played golf. Of course, the wedding and reception had to be at Bluegrass where the proposal took place. The staff was so helpful with the proposal that there was no need to talk with other venues. The ceremony took place on the 27th of April on the country club patio, where an excited groom danced his way to the altar. After a brief ride in a “just married” golf cart, the couple was introduced during the cocktail hour in the Sunnyside room, which overlooks the golf course. The party of 130 moved into the Cherry Hall Ballroom for an evening of dinner and dancing. A delicious buffet dinner and passed hors d’oeuvres

The floral arrangements and bouquets of orange calla lilies and orange and white roses were lovingly created by J Botanica. Each moment of the day, from getting ready until the end of the reception, was captured by Brett Richmond Photography. Everyone knew exactly where to be and what to do as the Wedding Coordinator, Beth Funderburk Templet was incredibly organized. Angela and Donavin were pleased with every aspect of their event. Should You Invite Technology to Your Wedding? BY LAURA BETH PETERS AND LAINIE STUBBLEFIELD
It’s interesting that this would be a topic we would write about, since our podcast discusses many old-fashioned traditions of the south that we hope to share and preserve, but the reality is that some technology really does enhance life experiences, and who doesn’t want that, especially on your wedding day? Your wedding day is a day you’ve put lots and LOTS of thought into, so why not make sure you’ve got some things in place that also equip your guests to make it one of the best days of their lives too? Let’s start pre-wedding with the invitation. There’s some really creative ways you can use today’s technology to share a very customized invitation with your guests such as, your colors, your photo, your own design. But guests should still receive a hard copy of that invitation. No matter the size of your wedding, all guests want to feel the welcoming hospitality and honor that comes in receiving an invitation by mail. There are elements to your wedding that will absolutely live and be shared online, but go ahead and plan a budget line item for printed invitations. Now, the RSVP could be a different story. If you’ve ever planned any event, you know how maddening it can be to get people to simply respond if they are coming or not. Traditionally, you would enclose a pre-stamped response card whereby your guests RSVP for your wedding. Nowadays, you see more brides simply including a card with instructions on how and where to complete the RSVP online. This is also a card where a wedding website can be shared with guests so they can go read your love story, see your engagement photos, meet your wedding party and see any logistical information that might be helpful on the wedding day. Many invitation designs allow for information to be shared on the backside of the invitation, this could also be a good location to print instructions on how to RSVP online – just know that some people might not flip over the invite! If you’re going the online RSVP route, you should plan to check in on any guests that may not spend much time with an electronic device (i.e. grandparents). Make sure they received the invitation and get their RSVP verbally. We’re not advocating for an online RSVP, as there’s something that’s truly special in going to the mailbox and seeing the response cards come in day after day, but we also see this as a place where you can definitely let technology work in your favor. An online RSVP will ease in the recording of responses and save some money as well, especially if you’ve got a large guest list! Now that your guests have made it to the ceremony, it’s a good time to communicate to them your expectations on what, if any, phone use you’re wanting to be a part of the ceremony; and by phone use, we of course mean camera phones and social media!
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 26
Keiana Hastings, co-owner of Simply Golden Events, says she’s definitely seeing a rise in popularity of phone-free ceremonies. “It’s called an unplugged ceremony. This is when the couple requests that cameras and phones be put away until after the ceremony has ended. This allows guests to pay attention and for the photographer, that they probably paid a pretty penny for, to get the shots they need, without cellphones or cameras blocking the view.” A phone-free ceremony is a personal decision you’ll have to make ahead of time, but let us caution you in leaning too heavily on your photographer to get every amazing shot of your ceremony. What if there is a look on someone’s face that is priceless and that only a guest could have captured? Also, remember that your guests have been invited to stand with you in support of the most important covenant you’re making; letting them capture the ceremony for their own enjoyment makes for a welcoming host/bride move. If you’re not going the phone-free route, you could go the other end of the spectrum and let every single one of your guests become a volunteer wedding photographer simply by supplying them with an official hashtag for your wedding. Simply put, a hashtag will serve as a catalog where all users (if they spell it correctly), will be sharing photos you can see later on! Even brides without grammatical wit can come up with a great hashtag with the help of online tools. Or if you’ve got a friend that’s great with puns, enlist him/her! Wedding hashtags are great for so many reasons, but the biggest one is for that of the bride and groom to see via shared photos how your guests experienced your wedding day; selfies, décor they loved, candid shots, etc. At my, (Laura Beth’s), wedding, we were thankful for someone using the hashtag on a photo of the groom’s cake because my husband and I never actually saw it in person! Do you have a list of potential guests much longer than what you can accommodate? Do you have friends and family that simply live way too far away to make it to your wedding? How about a family member that is sick or too pregnant to fly? If so, consider live streaming your wedding. My husband and I did this as a special way to include the people of Haiti where he runs a noprofit. What we found was that it opened up our wedding to allow for supporters everywhere to virtually join us! One couple even dressed up and sat at their computer to watch! We set up a stationary camera in the church and went live fifteen minutes before the ceremony began via UStream.TV. If you have a good WiFi connection at your venue, then you could also go live through your preferred social media platform. Just make sure
you’ve got someone dedicated to handle this ahead of time. Are you ready to take in all of the faces of family and friends as you walk down the aisle? Imagine if you were able to capture those looks of adoration, awe and joy on video. Well you can by doing this super savvy trick! Hide a GoPro camera in your bouquet! Make sure to talk with your florist in advance to let them know your plans and make sure to remove it before you toss that bouquet! We’d recommend practicing this piece at your rehearsal as well. At the reception, the tone is even more celebratory and guests will be ready for photos! Providing a photo booth is a great way to ensure that you and your guests get a great photo from the wedding. Keiana adds, “Photo booths are definitely still popular. Most booths will print two copies of the photos: One for the guests and one for the couple. I’ve seen a lot of couples use disposable or Polaroid cameras as an alternative to photo booths.” Older guests can have fun showing the younger ones how to use a Polaroid! And if you want to make sure that your guests are able to maximize technology, then provide a small charging station so that no one is rationing social media use or photos they take due to a low battery. In the end, these are enhancements to your wedding and the best thing you can do is to allow yourself to be present. Again, don’t lean too heavily on your photographer, videographer or guests to capture moments for you. You and your spouse are the moment! Sally Mink + Nathan Flinck
MARCH 18, 2019 Sally Mink, a native to Tennessee, and Nathan Flinck, originally from Minnesota, began their relationship in a unique way. Both working at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, at the time, the two formed a friendship at an annual conference in Lansing, Michigan. Coming from two different parts of the country, Sally and Nate were intrigued by cultural differences and accents! A year later, a spark of interest between the two led to them dating long distance for eight months before Nate moved to Franklin to be with Sally on July 4th, 2016. A year and a half later, Nate asked Sally to marry him in Rockland, Maine on their family vacation. Sally and Nate said their vows on the 18th of March, on a beautiful evening in John’s Island, South Carolina. The couple chose South Carolina because they wanted to have a small destination wedding that showcased a romantic charm. The beautiful live oak trees covered in moss was the perfect look.

The couple held their ceremony and reception at Wingate Plantation, including a signature strawberry basil margarita, and low country cuisine in honor of their destination, provided by Thurston Southern Catering. Their neutral, yet elegant florals were the showstopper of the evening with beautiful arrangements made with hydrangea, Tiffany roses, dusty miller and palmetto prawns, all designed by the bride’s brother, Parker Mink. The guest danced the night away to fantastic music provided by NICE Entertainment. Sally and Nate finished their last dance and made their final debut before taking off in a vintage Rolls Royce. Photography was provided by Cori Lee Photography and event planning by The Simply Elegant Group. Sally’s dress was designed by Watters and purchased at Fabulous Frocks in Franklin and Nathan’s suite was Jos. A Bank.

A Southern Gentleman as
Father of the Bride BY TIM KEARNS
I had my second opportunity to be father of the bride on June 1st, 2019 as my youngest daughter wed to a fine southern gentleman from Germantown, Tennessee named Daniel Young. The wedding day preparation is certainly left to the people best equipped to handle that task; the bride, maid of honor and the mother of the bride. I gave my opinion when asked, which was very seldom. The choice of venue, time of year, indoor or outdoor, colors, flowers, dress, showers, number of bride’s maids, bachelorette party, DJ or band, first dances, food, etc., are all topics way over the pay grade of this father of the bride. Yes, there are some financial decisions to discuss, but honestly weddings are very similar to a home renovation; a budget is a benchmark, but in the end you don’t want to shortchange the experience. Other than handling a few small details, the father of the bride’s job all boils down to the wedding day. Emotions are high and you need to be the rock; easier said than done for me: I’m emotional! I take the honor very seriously because I feel the father of the bride sets the tone for making the wedding guests feel welcome. It’s an opportunity to tell stories, recall memories of meeting the fiancé and how your relationship evolved with time. You introduce guests from both the bride and the groom’s side of the relationship who are meeting each other's family for the first time. The parents of the bride, hopefully, by this point have had opportunity to spend time and get to know the groom’s family. In our case, we actually met Daniel’s parents, Tommy and Gina Young, about four years ago and have spent time with each other in both Germantown and Franklin, staying at each other’s homes, growing as a family even before the “I do’s.” Your toast also gives you that one last chance to publicly tell your daughter just how proud you are of her and how much you love her! For me, the moment the delivery room doctor uttered the words: “It’s a girl,” my mind raced forward to; first steps, first day of school, little league soccer, teaching her to drive, her first date, high school graduation, college graduation, first job and then walking her down the aisle! As you stand in front of two hundred people with a microphone in your hand, this is your one opportunity to share a lifetime's worth of experience in a few brief minutes. You recall certain memories from childhood that led to her growth and development to the woman she’s become today. Use this as an opportunity to add to that growth and character. It’s not a time for off color jokes or memories that don’t put her in a flattering light. Send her off with her head held high and great memories of her wedding day that she can recall forever. You also get a beautiful, warm opportunity with a father - daughter dance. Choose a song meant to invoke a memory for each of you. Spend three minutes in private (while in front of two hundred friends), to speak
words of wisdom, encouragement and love. I really cherish those three minutes, I held my daughters and told them the hopes and dreams I have for her and the many reasons I will always love her! I often say the wedding ceremony will be the easiest part of being married. Once reality kicks in and the euphoria of the wedding day and honeymoon are a distant memory, all you have is that love and your relationship to hold things together. As you grow with age, people naturally change. Life changes you, children change you, careers, health, finances and all things that have an opportunity, if you let them, can drive you apart. The key is remembering that day; the day you said I do, the reasons you said I do, the love you have for that person. You want to continually share the type of love that makes the tough days not so bad and the good days that much sweeter. Bess and I celebrated thirty-four years of marriage on May 25th. Daniel’s parents, Tommy and Gina Young, will celebrate thirty-five years on January 21, 2020. So, if anything, Daniel and Taylor were both witnesses to parents who made the decision to love each other forever; fight through the tough days and give thanks for the great days! If you soon will be a father of the bride or become one years from now; cherish every moment, every memory and take every opportunity to tell your daughter just how much you love her! Make that day special as only a true southern gentleman would!

Touch Now for the element of touch, which for us means bringing in different textures. These could be items for your guests to interact with such as vintage, velvet lounge seating, velvet or silk table runners and tablecloths, accessories like blankets for cooler, winter month weddings, etc. Even fancy hand towels in restroom and hand lotion go a long way.

Sound Cue the music! A lively dance floor filled with wedding guests enjoying themselves is absolutely key to ensuring that your wedding was one for the books. You certainly don’t want everyone to remain seated throughout the entire night, so make sure the music does its job and appeals to the different age demographics of guests you’ve invited and then get out on the dance floor and get down to some of your favorite tunes! Also, remember that music isn’t just for the reception after dinner, don’t forget to have music playing during what was traditionally called the prelude, but is now just the time the guests arrive... Imagine yourself as a guest walking through the entire wedding experience and make sure that you’re going to have some sort of music playing and no crickets.

Taste Food and drink may be one of the most memorable parts of any wedding day, because let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good surf and turf, three course meal? Why not pair your hors’doeuvres or dinner with a wine or spirit that complements one another? Maybe there’s a certain dish that is unique to your family or the region in which you live, or perhaps there’s a special cocktail you were drinking the first time you met each other. Food and drink, in our opinion, is one of the biggest missed opportunities to add a little personal flair into your wedding, but is such a seamless and subtle way to add hints of your personalities to make your day stand out and uniquely your own.

Sight There’s no doubt that creating a striking and awe-inspiring statement with decor is a surefire way to really capture the attention of your guests’ sight. Think about where you want to make a statement with your decor, such as an elaborate or unique escort card display, a stunning aisle entrance or altar decor that sweeps you and your guests right off your feet. Having a specific focal point that really sets the tone and is a sweet sight to see not only makes for incredible photo opts, but also makes your wedding stand out

Scent Scent is such a strong way to really intensify your guests’ experience the minute they walk in the door to your venue and can be done in so many different ways. From the savory aroma of cocktail hour foods being passed, with trays whizzing right by your nose or the sweet scent of flowers filling the room, there are subtle hints of scents that add to the overall ambiance of the event and make a memorable impression.

How to Keep Children Entertained at Weddings BY JENNY REIMOLD
While it’s crucial to remember that children develop in stages and age-appropriate expectations need to be considered, the following suggestions may help ease the anxiety and struggle of bringing children to weddings. DISCUSS THE WEDDING AHEAD OF TIME While I know that explaining the significance of a wedding may be futile for some children, especially younger ones, it’s important to share where you will be going and why...in the most magical and exciting way possible. For younger children, share that they may see cousins or grandparents, that you’d like to dance with them at the reception or that they’ll get a special piece of cake for good behavior. For children in the wedding or older children, focus on the honor of being invited by the bride or groom, the value of their role and why it’s so important to be on one’s best behavior. Any attempt at establishing guidelines and expectations is always a good idea; rewarding children with cake never hurts either. IDENTIFY YOUR WINGMAN Depending on the age of your children or your role in the wedding, it may be impossible for you to monitor, control or distract your child throughout the course of the day. Plan ahead and find another attendee to assist you. In our family, we have an abundance of teenage and college girls to assist with the younger children. However, a grandparent or family friend may be good for backup as well. Identify a spot where a helper may be able to take a cranky child should they become disruptive. If your child is in the wedding, partner that child with an older one to aide in walking down the aisle.

PACK A “GRAB BAG” A “grab bag” is this mother of seven’s solution to keeping kids entertained at special events, road trips or plane rides. Prior to any event where my children have to be relatively under control and well mannered, I buy a few inexpensive toys and pack them in individual small bags. This may be a travel set of crayons with a mini coloring book, figurines, flash cards, matching games…anything that is small, peaceful and NEW. Having a new toy will allow for more engagement as opposed to the same toy you pull from the diaper bag each week. Throughout the day, if things start to head south, pull out another item from the grab bag.
It’s often said that parents learn many things from their children; patience being one of them. Nothing tests a parent’s patience and parenting skill set more than when we have to take our children to an event where they are expected to be on their best behavior. With fall wedding season upon us and many families participating in or attending a loved one’s special day, there are a few tips parents can follow to make weddings easier for both children and adults.
DIGITAL ACTIVITIES Although I am aware of our pediatrician’s screen time guidelines, desperate times call for desperate measures. In a perfect world, my children would sit quietly, color during the church ceremony and play Old Maid with their sisters during the reception. However, I live in the real world where I need a plan B. If the novelty of the grab bag has worn off, opt for a smart phone or tablet with a NEW game or movie. Check the recent downloads to see if any new movies you missed in theatres are available. Find a game your child hasn’t seen on your phone or iPad. Three of my favorite apps for younger children (that you can also play on silent without Wi-Fi) are: Knock Knock Family - Upload photos of family members that are hidden behind doors. Peekaboo Barn - Touch the barn doors to reveal animals that make sounds. You can also learn the animals in Spanish.
Sound Touch - Touch the squares in the grid to see and hear various animals, musical instruments and methods of transportation. I also love the Head’s Up app for older children. Ellen made this popular board game famous again and it would be great for kids to play with each other at the reception. Music Tiles is like the Rock Band of classical music where children touch moving notes to complete a song. KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT A NIGHT Ultimately, this is one of the most important days of someone’s life and if your children are a distraction or interruption of that moment, it may be best to excuse yourself and your child out of courtesy. Wedding guests may think flower girls struggling down the aisle are funny or children who giggle inappropriately at the wrong time to be cute. However, weddings can be very long days for children and as the evening progresses, the behavior typically digresses. Know your child’s limits and when it is best to bow out graciously.

Buy, Borrow or Steal… But Don’t Ever Wear White BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM
Listen up, ladies! This one is for you. Unless you are the one walking down the isle to your groom or you have been appointed to wear a certain color designated by the bride, then you are never, ever to wear a bridal color. This means: DO NOT WEAR White DO NOT WEAR Off-White DO NOT WEAR Cream DO NOT WEAR Ivory DO NOT WEAR Champagne DO NOT WEAR Blush or any similar colors
It has been a long standing rule of etiquette that women are never to try to outshine the bride on her big day. Wearing colors that a wedding dress could be is taking focus away from the one person in the room that should be wearing that color by traditional standards. This is not a thing of the past and if younger women are trying to imply it is, just wait until your big day. The dress is important. Huge. It’s a big part of your wedding. No one should be wearing the bride’s colors. You know why? Because they are not the bride.

So, it doesn’t matter if the only dress you have in your closet is a shade of white, cream, blush or something of the like… Buy, borrow or steal another dress in a different color. I am not really endorsing theft here. However, I do want to emphasize the importance of wedding dress etiquette. Guests are there to celebrate the BRIDE and GROOM. Yes, what you wear should be appropriate. This is a simple rule of manners. So, if it’s not your big day, then don’t be that guest.

A Maid of Honor and Best Man’s to Do’s Before the I Do’s BY PAIGE ATWELL
If you’re a bride and groom, there are a plethora of things on your to-do list before the big day. It can seem a bit overwhelming, but truth be told, that’s what your Maid of Honor and Best Man are for. These are more than just titles; rather, it represents your role in the couple’s life and the one they want you to play on their big day. It’s the job of these individuals to make the lives of the bride and groom easier. Here’s how:
it low key and vice versa. Whichever way you celebrate, just make sure everything is planned and that they have a good time.
ATTEND FITTINGS Often times, the Maid of Honor and Best Man accompany the bride and groom to dress and suit shopping and fittings. It’s important to be a calming presence, and to give advice or suggestions, but only when asked. The priority is to be supportive. Whatever they wear, they should be confident, and that’s easy to do when they have you cheering them on!
LEAD THE WEDDING PARTY As much as brides and grooms typically love the people they choose to stand next to them on their big day, keeping a large group on the same page can be challenging. For this reason, the Maid of Honor and Best Man should be the leaders. Make sure everyone knows when and where to be at all times and that they keep a positive attitude!
ATTEND PRE-WEDDING EVENTS There are a lot of events leading up to the actual wedding, such as wedding showers and the rehearsal dinner. As the Maid of Honor and Best Man, it’s crucial that you come to these. Not only should you attend, but be sure to offer a helping hand wherever you can.
BE A POINT PERSON FOR GUESTS If you’ve ever been invited to a wedding, you probably know that guests typically have a million questions. A great way to help the bride and groom is to be a point of contact for questions before and on the day of.
BE THE MESSENGER THE DAY OF Traditionally, the bride and groom avoid contact on the wedding day. This is the perfect opportunity to lend a helping hand. Stay in contact with the bride and
PLAN THE BACHELOR/ BACHELORETTE PARTIES This job does come with fun perks, such as planning the bachelor/bachelorette parties! You can also pull in help from the bridal party on this but be sure to consult the bride and groom first to be respectful of their wishes. If they want something low key, keep

groom and the wedding party to make sure everyone is there, ready to go! HAVE ALL VENDOR CONTACT INFORMATION The last thing you want on the wedding day is to have a stressed-out bride or groom. To help avoid it, make sure you have all vendor contact information before the day of. This insures that if anything is missing or messed up, you know who to contact to fix it without having to bother the couple. BE A CALMING PRESENCE Weddings can be stressful, especially the day of. Getting everything and everyone in order can be chaos, and there is a lot that, unfortunately, you can’t control. However, no matter what happens, you can be a calming presence to help ease the bride and the groom. You’ll be surprised by how much that act alone can help. PLAY HOST During the reception, the bride and groom can be bombarded with people, photos and well wishes. It can be difficult for them to get to everyone. For this reason, it’s helpful for the Maid of Honor and Best Man to act as hosts. Show people to their seats, make sure they get food and thank them for coming! MAKE SURE ALL RENTALS ARE RETURNED Last but not least, tie up any loose ends after the big day. If there are suits, dresses or party supplies that were rented, make sure they get returned on time.

Hannah Sierocki - and - Matthew Zehr APRIL 27,2019
Hannah Sierocki and Matthew Zehr met in April of 2018 when they were introduced by Matthew’s sister, who knew they would be the perfect match. Matthew took everyone by surprise when he asked Hannah to marry him on his birthday with both their entire families there on December 30th. He had all of Hannah’s friends in town so they could celebrate their engagement on New Year’s Eve together! They married four months later on April 27, 2019 on a gorgeous spring day. They got married on a family friends farm of 200 acres on the river where Hannah grew up vacationing and learning how to fish as a child in North Carolina. Matthew’s grandfather Armin Zehr, who is ninety-four years old, married the two. Matthew plays in a local band in Nashville and came and played for the wedding! Between the property being sentimental and his grandfather marrying the two, it was a very memorable day. At the end of the night everyone set off lanterns to send the couple off. They spent the next three days relaxing on the river, fishing and enjoying each other’s company in the peaceful mountains, as newlyweds. They returned home to their businesses and new home for a couple of weeks and then set off for a week in Turks and Caicos for their honeymoon. They have settled in a home in West Nashville.

HOW TO PLAN THE BEST BACHELORETTE PARTY IN NASHVILLE BY: BRITNEY HUBBARD
When you’re planning a Nashville bachelorette bash, whether it be for yourself or for your bestie, here are some top tips on how to make the most of your girl time in Music City!
MAKE YOUR WAY DOWNTOWN What’s a Nash bash without a night (or two), on Broadway? Nashville is known for its live music and party atmosphere – a perfect combination to let loose with your girlfriends. Start early by booking a drinking tour of Nashville; open top buses with booze flowing or BYOB pedaling around the city with your crew. Have a late dinner and then start bar hopping through the many honky tonks on Broadway.
BRUNCH IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA
Make sure you do some research on where and when you are going for brunch. We Nashvillians take brunch VERY seriously, therefore you might have to wait in line for quite a while for your eggs and bacon. Check out trendy spots in 12 South, Hillsboro Village, East Nashville and The Gulch for scrumptious fare and social media worthy photo ops. Cue the mimosa toast!
SWEATING FOR THE WEDDING If your bridesmaids want to get their workout in, sign up for a group class! There are so many studios that offer fun, upbeat classes from boxing to yoga that will wake your party up and get you in shape for the big day.
SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP DITCH THE HOTEL
What girl gang doesn’t love a good ‘ole fashion slumber party? Local Airbnb’s are great to house your group! Having an entire property to stay in during your trip will help make you and your girls comfortable for the whole trip. A kitchen on hand is ideal for cocktail preparation, snack assembly and will assist in cutting costs with the option to prepare meals for your girls instead of going out for each meal. You can find bachelorette-themed condos in downtown Nashville or cute 12 South bungalows listed on Airbnb that will accommodate a wide range of bridal party sizes. The memories will be flowing when you can sprawl out on the couch with your best gals, chit chat about boys and enjoy each other’s company. This is also a great way to cut costs, as Airbnb’s are usually more affordable than hotel stays.

WINE NOT
Throw on your midi dress, sandals and sunhat and take a trip south of town to Arrington Vineyards! The beautiful scenery and delectable wines are the perfect setting to make memories with your girls. Try to go when you can take a tour of the winery grounds. There are certain times that boast a full vineyard tour and tasting. You can also find live music, food trucks and picnic tables – perfect pairings for your wine and girl time!
Nashville has some of the best shopping! Gather your girls and head out to Green Hills Mall for luxury shopping. Stop in Tiffany & Co. for wedding jewels, find rehearsal dinner dresses, and do some wedding shoe shopping! Make your way to 12 South for a stroll through Draper James and the many Nashville boutiques sprinkled around the area. There are so many photo ops in 12 South like the famous “I Believe in Nashville” and Tie-Dye mural that are perfect for your Instagram grid! Next, take an Uber to The Gulch for even more famous Nashville murals like the “Wings” and great shopping. In case you get hungry, these locations double as great spots to grab a bite to eat or indulge in a happy hour cocktail.

John Wolff proposed to Erin Fergusson on the Natchez Trace Bridge in July 2017, while still living in the northeast, not yet knowing they would become East Nashville residents in March 2018. They wed on the 25th of May at The Old School farm and restaurant in Nashville in an intimate ceremony and reception for 125 guests. Erin and John’s good friend, Valerie Skinner, and their pastor, Matt Smallbone, officiated their special ceremony. The venue was set at the manicured farm in the beer garden and rustic barn, and was the perfect place for their vows and subsequent celebration. Wedding guests dined on a delectable meal prepared by Chef Penelope’s catering, followed by beautiful, floral, piped, cupcakes by Something Sweet, LLC and a cookie bar prepared by Erin and her mom. DJ Capcee, one of John’s dear friends, kept the dancing going all night until it was time for the couple to be sent off through a corridor of sparklers and the smiling faces of friends and family. They honeymooned in the beautiful and relaxing Grayton Beach, Florida, basking in the perfect sunshine and eating delicious seafood every night. John and Erin are so thankful for their amazing friends and family and were overjoyed to celebrate their marriage with them in the city they now call home!

Bride are you?
The Ultimate Gown Guide
Which
BY PAIGE ATWELL
There are typically two types of brides: Bride A is the bride that has envisioned her dream wedding dress all her life and knows exactly what she wants, and then there’s bride B: Who is overwhelmed with her choices and has no clue where to start. Whether you’re a Bride B and need help getting started, or a Bride A, whose dream dress didn’t pan out, there is a perfect dress out there for every bride-to-be. Whether you’re looking to accentuate your curves, live out your Disney princess dreams or yearning for a modest look - here are some tips on finding your perfect gown.
The Bold Bride This bride is sure to stun in whatever gown she chooses because it’ll no doubt make a statement! If you want to surprise your guests on your big day, a bold gown might be just what you need. When looking for your gown, check out the latest bridal couture shows and lines. Plunging necklines, sheer fabric or angular gowns are all designs that might make you feel your best. It’s your big day, why not go bold or go home?
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 62
Clean and simple are the key words for the classic bride. If you aren’t too keen on showing or doing too much, then less is always more for you. When searching for your gown, look for traditional, A line gowns with modest necklines to help you achieve your classic look. Simple jewelry such as pearls or studs are a great way to top it off.
The Princess Bride
Bring on the tulle! If you’re looking to live out your Disney, fairytale, storybook dreams on your big day, you’re definitely in the market for a princess gown. When you’re selecting your gown, it’s not so much what’s on the top that matters as the bottom portion of the dress. In other words, the more poof, the better. Add glitter or crystals to the top, sleeves or even in a belt and you’re sure to feel like a princess!
Your big day is supposed to be all about you, so what better time to flaunt your greatest assets? If you’re looking for a dress to hug your curves, consider slicker, clingier fabrics, mermaid style gowns or even a sash to give the gown more allusion to vava voom down the aisle!
The Modern Bride
The Classic Bride
The Curvy Bride
If you consider yourself to be the not-sotraditional bride, an out of-the-box gown might be exactly what you need to feel comfortable on your big day. Not a fan of white? More and more designers are making beautiful gowns in shades ranging from blush to black. Looking for something besides the traditional long dress? Opt for a short or midi dress or even a jumpsuit!
If you aren’t one for glitz and glam, then you might consider taking a more modest approach to your gown. Higher necklines, longer sleeves and simple fabrics are all qualities to look for in your dress search. Modest can still be chic!

I... DON’T?!
AVOI D G O I N G OV E R B OA RD BY JULIE JORGENSEN
Big, happy congrats and lots of hugs to all of the middle Tennessee brides-to-be! I’m excited for each of y’all and am super flattered that you decided to learn a bit more about the potentially-elusive notion of bridal beauty. We know you’re gearing up to say, “I do,” so let’s focus instead on maybe what to NOT do! First things first and keep in mind that I’m nothing if not honest, y’all: Please don’t overdo it with the pre-wedding diet and exercise routine. Your beloved asked for your hand for who you are as a person. He or she isn’t over there thinking, “well, I’ll propose, and maybe that’ll get her to lose a few pounds.” No ma’am. Breaking a sweat can work miracles in managing the stress associated with planning a wedding, and I’ll always support a healthy lifestyle. That said, pushing yourself to the extreme is neither necessary nor helpful. Why do I say this? Because I totally did it and they always say that hindsight is 20/20. I fainted two days before my wedding — in the middle of getting a spray tan — due to lack of food and over exercise. Coming to in a spray-tan booth, while somewhat funny to tell people about now, wasn’t fun at the time. Trust me here. Each of y’all are going to look radiant and beautiful on your special day, no need to try to starve and make yourself miserable in the process — and a baggy, ill-fitting wedding dress won’t look good on anybody. Moving on to the all-important topic of hair and makeup: Don’t go overboard. Standing before your future spouse is not the time for him or her to wonder who’s hiding under all of that dramatic makeup or peeking out from a mess of a hairdo. The real housewives look is best saved for the shouting ladies on Bravo. Think of your wedding-day look as you on your best, most-rested day: Luminous skin, bright eyes and a smile that can, and will, light up your wedding venue. A few months before the big day, take stock in your skincare routine and consult with an esthetician or dermatologist if at all possible. Any new regimen takes at least a couple of months to really work its best, so plan accordingly. Just so y’all know, no amount of makeup will cover up a bad skincare routine. I’m a big fan of dermaplane facials, even the at-home versions, to sweep away peach fuzz and dead skin cells and to get that glow. Chalk up on a hydrating serum and eye cream, as stress and emotions can wreak havoc on your pretty complexion. Sitting at your laptop checking reception RSVPs? Throw on a sheet mask! Sheet masks are all the rage when it comes to a quick hit of high-powered skincare, but always be sure to apply only on a clean face. I also love Patchology and
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 64
Karuna. Keep sheet masks in the fridge before use for an extra-cooling boost that feels ahmay-zing. Finally, give some serious consideration to investing in hair and makeup professionals on your big day. Don’t assume that it’s costprohibitive. Talk with your current hairstylist, ask for makeup artist referrals, visit your fave makeup counter for a free consultation. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being tended to while you sit in a salon chair with a mimosa in your hand. Enlist your most makeup-savvy bridesmaid to stash your “bridal kit,” (lipstick and gloss, highlighting and or setting powder and Kleenex and breath mints just to cover the bases), in her purse for touchups at the reception. Don’t forget, above all else, take a few deep breaths and try to live in the moment on your big day. It goes so incredibly fast. Grab a glass of that celebratory champagne, find a corner with your new spouse where you can observe everyone celebrating on your behalf, and enjoy a quiet toast, because that’s what it’s all about. Cheers!

Let’s begin with the tuxedo. A tuxedo jacket will always have some amount of satin on the lapel – some have just a trim, while others have a full satin lapel. The buttons will also be covered in a matching satin – making for a very sophisticated and timeless look. On the pants we notice a satin stripe down the outer leg – some stripes are thin and some are wider, but generally speaking satin on the leg ensures a traditional tuxedo.
Visit us online at streettuxedo.com or come see us at one of our middle Tennessee locations.
As with any definition, we find that there are always exceptions and hybrids if you will, of the two distinct types of formalwear. For instance, one of our new colors for Spring/Summer 2019 is the Cornflower Allure featured in these photos. This gorgeous new look is neither a tuxedo nor a suit based on the defining traits mentioned above. The jacket features a self-lapel but has covered buttons, and the pants do not have a stripe. This style provides the classic, sophisticated look desired by those wanting a tuxedo, along with the seamless, relatable look aimed for by those shopping for a suit. Whatever your style, we take pride in helping you find the look that most perfectly displays your personality, and we look forward to working with you!
A suit on the other hand, has no satin to be found. The jacket has a self-lapel, meaning the material of the lapel is the same as the jacket

ALTERNATIVES TO REHEARSAL DINNERS BY KRISTA EHRET
The rehearsal dinner in its authentic form is the ritual of feeding all family and bridal party members who are required to attend the wedding rehearsal. In current days, this dinner has exploded into its own event where all too many times the guest list and budget rivals that of the wedding itself. Another issue is that many modern-day venues will book weddings on Thursdays and Fridays which prevents the rehearsal from happening the night before. You may be forced to schedule your rehearsal in the morning or even have it the day of the wedding. If you have had any complications arise, or are just looking to branch away from the norm, here are some ideas to consider in lieu of the traditional post-rehearsal meal.
SIGHTSEEING TOURS Middle Tennessee has recently become a very popular spot for destination weddings. Due to the surplus of awesome venues and vendors, the growing Nashville scene, and being centrally located within the country, it’s easy to see the appeal. If the majority of your guests are out-of-towners, why not show them the sights? Depending on where everyone is staying, the Country Music Hall of Fame, Belle Meade Plantation, Ryman Auditorium, The Hermitage and The Frist Center are all great options. There are also tons of guided bus tours that allow the guests to see several landmarks in a shorter amount of time.
BEER, WINE OR WHISKEY TASTING If you have a group that enjoys a little libation, this is a great option as there are many distilleries, vineyards and breweries in our area. Tickets average around $8 per person, so it’s definitely a cheaper route than providing an entire dinner. With that money saved, you may consider providing transportation so that guests can all ride together and be safe. Similarly, there are wine tours that will valet your party around to different vineyards and to lunch. This is an all-day event and will be more on the pricey side. GET SPORTY If you prefer to be up and moving versus wining and dining, think of alternatives that get the blood pumping. Top Golf is a new Nashville hot spot that can accommodate large or small groups. Price wise, you may come out about the same per person as a sit-down dinner, but this includes the playing fee. Bowling, Line Dancing Classes and Pedal Taverns are other fun options. Going to a Nashville Sounds game is another idea that is very affordable and family-friendly. BRUNCH, BARBECUE AND BACKYARDS If due to venue restrictions you need to have your rehearsal at an odd time of day, just go with it and enjoy the opportunity to create a unique experience. Everyone loves brunch and you’re likely to come out much cheaper on the bill. I am not opposed to an at home event, but will tell you to please not host this at the bride, groom, or parents’ home. Try to find a good friend or family member who is willing to host the event, but isn’t tied as closely to the wedding the next day. You’ll have enough going on without needing to clean the house from top to bottom. Casual backyard barbecues or pool parties are a great way to relax and diffuse any jitters. Don’t feel confined to the traditional idea of what a rehearsal dinner should or shouldn’t be. Think about what you will enjoy the most and what allows you to visit with those friends and family who are sharing this special moment with you.

Jenna Wetherholt & Nathan Alley April 13, 2019
Photography by Ace Photography

It’s as good as it gets marrying my fair lady… Nathan Alley and Jenna Wetherholt got married on the 13th of April. They share so many similarities: Their love for Tennessee football, Nathan’s passion for movies and Jenna’s obsession with musical theater. They spent a year focusing on their vision, which was creating their two worlds molding together. So why not put his favorite movie, As Good As It Gets and her favorite musical My Fair Lady together? When planning the wedding, it was truly full circle. Jenna used to be a bridal gown model. Jenna was never going to be the traditional bride and had worn tons of white gowns. When it came time to pick a dress, Jenna knew she wanted something different. She chose a pink ombré gown with floral petals for their wedding in the woods at Drakewood Farm. Their table seating was custom designed signs that featured their favorite movies and musicals, from Gone with the Wind, to The Godfather to Major League. The cocktails and drinks were paired with napkins that had quotes from their favorite movies on them. They also had custom cotton candy made by Trish with Pandy Cotton Candy, and guests were able to pick a puff and pop it into their champagne! The groom’s cake and table were a Tennessee Vols theme, with pictures from Vols games, signed memorabilia from Peyton Manning and a note written to Jenna’s grandfather from a family friend, Phil Fulmer. Nathan and Jenna’s heritage were really shown in the details of the table. During the reception, Jenna changed into a custom-made jumpsuit designed by Karen Hendrix Couture, using her mother’s wedding gown. She paired that with her mother-in-law’s wedding veil. To end their evening, Nathan and Jenna ventured off in a white, 1950s vintage car. Not only did Jenna find her Professor Higgins…but she made him a better man.

Your Go-To Guide to
Wedding Day Gratuities
BY LEIGH BAWCOM
“Should I tip my wedding vendors? How much do you recommend?” Many of my clients ask these questions. First know that anything you give, whether it’s money, a thoughtful gift or a glowing testimonial, will be appreciated. Vendors might make their job look easy, but let’s face it, weddings are hard work and full of tiny details. When you receive service that is above and beyond, a great way to say thank you is by rewarding your vendors in some way. Here’s a guide to customary gratuities for each vendor.
Ceremony Musicians
There are many talented artists in this world, but musicians hone their craft for years to achieve flawless performances. Are you requesting a special song that isn’t in their repertoire? Consider giving a $15-$20 tip per musician at the conclusion of the ceremony.
DJ or Band
While tipping your DJ or reception band is optional, these wedding professionals not only make sure your guests are on the dance floor and keep the party going, but they also emcee the event and make the important announcements. When the reception is over, show your thanks with $50-$150 for your DJ or $25-$35 per musician.
Transportation
Whether transporting the bride and groom, the wedding party, or your guests, your driver should provide safe and on-time service. Be sure to check your transportation contract, as gratuity is sometimes included or it can be added so you don’t have to think about tipping when you are dropped off at your destination. 15%-20% gratuity is customary.
Hair & Makeup Artists PHOTOS PROVIDED BY: JOE HENDRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTNEY DAVIDSON PHOTOGRAPHY

These are the people that make you look and feel your best! They know all the tricks to keep your hair and makeup perfect for hours. Just as you would tip at your favorite salon, you will want to tip your hair and makeup artist 15-25% once your services are complete.
Y
It may seem like delivering flowers or a cake are easy, but they are major components of your special day and a big responsibility. If your venue only includes the space, the crew setting up and breaking down are likely working long hours and moving dozens of tables and hundreds of chairs at multiple venues. Your wedding wouldn’t happen without these behind-the-scenes people, so giving $5-$10 per person when their job is done is an appropriate way to recognize their efforts.

Delivery & Set-Up Staff
Officiant
Sometimes an overlooked “vendor,” the marriage wouldn’t be legal without your officiant. Their work isn’t just done on the wedding day. They often spend hours providing premarital counseling and getting to know you and your fiancé in order to create a personal ceremony. Whether a $100 gratuity to the officiant or a donation of the same amount to his/her church or synagogue, this is a nice way to express your appreciation.
Photographer and Videographer
Your photographer and videographer don’t typically expect gratuity, but remember that they are capturing every detail of your day and giving you images that will last for generations to come. If they don’t own their studio, consider giving $50-$200 per vendor.
Catering Staff & Bartenders Some catering contracts include service charges. Talk to your caterer to see what is included. In many cases, service charges only cover their equipment, props and transportation. If gratuity is not part of your contract, you’ll want to tip the staff that are serving and taking care of your guests throughout the event. 15%-20% of the food or liquor bill is customary or $50-$100 to each chef and $25-$50 to each server and bartender is acceptable at the end of the reception.
Planner
Planners don’t expect a tip, but at the end of a long day when their feet and back are hurting, it’s the best surprise! Orchestrating the many logistics of a wedding and reception (and sometimes troubleshooting along the way) is no small feat and is mentally and physically exhausting. Show your thanks with a 10%-20% tip, a gift card to their favorite store or restaurant, a personal gift or a handwritten note that can be used as a testimonial.

Financial Advice for Newlyweds BY JONATHAN WALKER
Getting married should be one of the most wonderful times of your life. Surprisingly, when I counsel people that are about to get married (or even that have been married for a while), there is a high percentage of people that haven’t had meaningful discussions about money. Here are a few topics I think all couples should discuss:
Helping to make you a more confident investor
Be open about your finances with each other. You are both coming into this marriage with preconceived notions about money. Often, one person is a saver and the other a spender, and this can be a great source of tension. Taking the time to learn about how your spouse reacts to money, debt and savings will greatly reduce marital stress about finances. Set goals. Discuss your financial goals; the amount of debt you each have, and find out if either of you are used to living on a budget. Best practice is to set multiple annual goals. It will keep you both focused. Start with establishing your emergency fund. Work on a budget. I am still amazed at the number of people that don’t live on a budget given how easy it is to set one up. There are a number of free online tools you can use to do it. Make sure you have some “mad money” in your budget that is there to spend freely. Unless you live on a budget, your money is managing you. Do not be in a hurry to purchase your first home. Even if you have dated a long time, marriage comes with adjustments and these adjustments can be stressful. Take a little time to get to know each other and let your marriage settle. Have some fun! I promise you will be glad you did. Make a will. Yes, I know it’s not even on your radar. But if you die intestate, or without a will, the State of Tennessee has one for you and I can guarantee you it’s probably not what you would want. This is even more important if this is a second marriage or if one or both spouses already have children. Also, update beneficiary information on insurance policies, 401k plans, IRA accounts and any legal docs you might already have in place. Do not push your partner’s financial buttons. Learning how to argue in a healthy manner, especially about money, takes time. The fastest way to set that process back is to instigate. Instead, try to understand where your partner is coming from, and move forward from that point.

What’s Your Floravere? Courtesy of Floravere
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 74
A
n innovative new platform is transforming the way brides shop for a wedding gown into a unique, home try-on experience. Floravere is shaking up the wedding industry and modernizing the way brides’ shop! Traditionally, shopping for a wedding dress is overwhelming and can be emotionally draining. Now, inspired by the millennial bride, Floravere is modernizing the process with a personalized experience that is convenient, efficient and affordable. Brides select gowns they’re interested in and samples are mailed directly to them to try-on at home! Samples are then returned, and the made-toorder final choice is sent back in a few months. Floravere was founded by Molly Kang and Denise Jin, who started a wedding dress business because they were surprised to find how antiquated and predatory the experience could be. The most-liked, elegant dresses cost more than the entire open-bar budget, while the dresses squarely in a decent price range felt crunchy, massproduced and not-so-chic. Having been behind the scenes at other fashion brands, Molly and Denise knew there was a smarter way. So, they built their own, more efficient supply chain, partnering with the best designers and artisans in the industry. They also decided to sell directly to brides, because fewer stops equals a smaller price tag. Floravere features a collection of unforgettable, right-off-therunway wedding gowns at historically impossible prices and a truly innovative shopping experience personalized to you: Try on wedding dresses in the privacy of your own home or come to a private appointment at one of our signature pop-ups! A signature home try-on experience unlike any other - each Bride Box includes selected sample gowns, a home try-on kit and dedicated time with a personal stylist. The bride tells us when and how they want to try on, Floravere makes it happen. The Floravere Showroom is the ultimate VIP bridal experience: A dedicated hour in our suite for the bride and her guests and an opportunity to try on the full collection (including exclusive and archived styles). Guests can get the full experience at Floravere boutiques in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and Washington D.C. Floravere has announced boutiques to open next in Philadelphia, Denver and Austin. But if you don’t find yourself near any of those cities prior to your big day, don’t sweat it! Thirteen Surprisingly Strict Wedding Etiquette Rules From Emily Post BY JESS CATCHER, COURTESY OF LITTLETHINGS.COM
Emily Post was renowned for her advice for behaving properly in society, especially when it came to the sometimes tricky realm of wedding etiquette. Most of us know the basics when it comes to the usual rules and traditions couples follow on their big day, but you might be surprised by just how strict Emily was when it came to her expectations for perfectly planned nuptials. Couples nowadays tend to buck pretty much all of these seemingly outdated rules — though they were as good as law back when Emily wrote them in 1922 in Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home. Take a look at the many surprisingly restrictive wedding rules she was famous for dishing out. You might even learn just how many of them you or your loved ones have broken on your own wedding days. 1. You Should Not Omit Inviting Friends Just Because They’re Poor: Obviously, most modern couples aren’t so gift-oriented that they would stoop to such tactics, but apparently it was a big enough issue back in the day for Emily to issue this “word of warning”: To leave out old friends because they are neither rich nor fashionable and to include comparative strangers because they are of great social importance, not alone shows a want of loyalty and proper feeling, but is to invite the contempt of those very ones whom such snobbery seeks to propitiate. 2. The Groom’s Family Should Never Pay A Single Cent For the Reception: Couples today have no qualm sharing the financial load of the wedding day between them (though perhaps with some help from both sides of the family), but Emily was steadfastly against the idea. In fact, she lists this as the “one unalterable rule,” saying further that “never under any circumstances should a wedding reception be given at the house of the groom’s family.” Instead, they can host celebratory balls and other celebrations leading up to the big day, but not the reception itself. 3. The Bride Should Use A Stand-In at Rehearsal: Although Emily explains that the bride is in charge of the whole ordeal, she also claims that the future missus should never actually take part in it herself. Instead, she should use a “pseudo-bride” to go through the motions in her place. She says this role can be filled by “anyone who happens to be present” and is supposed to ward off bad luck. 4. The Best Man Should Have the Busiest Job: She claims the best man’s role is the most difficult on the day-of, describing them as a “cross between trained nurse, valet, general manager and keeper.” According to her, this means that his job entails keeping his “patient” (the groom) from getting too nervous by “jolly[ing] him along as best he can” while simultaneously delivering the bride and groom’s luggage to wherever they will be spending their first night as husband and wife. Of course, he should also check them in on their behalf. “If he is
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 76
very thoughtful, he may himself put flowers about the rooms,” Emily wrote. Could you imagine a best man going this above and beyond today? 5. The Procession Should Be As Precise As Military Marches: To avoid wedding parties that “bop up and down like something boiling in a pan” as they make their way down the aisle, she recommends taking the time and attention to drill the members of the procession to move in perfect step like those in the military, “rising and falling in a block or unit." She claims that with practice, “this is not difficult.” 6. Bridesmaids Are to Match Each Other Precisely: Although the color between each of the ladies can vary, Emily’s rules state that the texture and model must be exact replicas of the same design. She also says that the bride makes the selection of dress “without considering or even consulting them as to their taste or preference.” The bride also doesn’t need to pay a nickel toward the cost — all of which speaks to why this particular wedding tradition fell out of style, as bridesmaids became brides themselves and remembered how they were treated. 7. The Best Man Should Be Dressed Exactly Like the Groom: At most weddings you attend these days, the groom and best man are at least wearing different ties. Not so back in Emily’s time, however, when she describes the two men as matching with the exact same ties. The exception she allows to set the soon-to-be-husband apart: a slightly larger boutonnière that is just a tad more elaborate than his best buddy’s. The ushers dress like the groom as well, but usually with a different tie and sometimes a white waistcoat. 8. Bridesmaids Are Not to Walk with Groomsmen: Emily demands that this common practice for today’s weddings be avoided at all costs, claiming that it “gives the impression of a double wedding and spoils the picture.” 9. The Bride Should Arrive Late for The Ceremony: For the “perfectly managed wedding,” Emily claims a bride should arrive one minute after the hour in order to give the latecomers a chance to find their place before her march begins. 10. The Best Man Should Have A Spare Ring: She recommends this for the “very careful best man” in case an unfortunate butterfingers causes the original ring to slip away from the groom during the ceremony. Rather than bending over to retrieve it, he should simply have another one readily at hand. 11. Guests Should Keep Their PDA To A Minimum: Since the day is all about the love between the bride and groom, Emily writes “it cannot be too much emphasized that promiscuous kissing among the guests is an offense against good taste.”
12. The Bride’s Money Is To Be Banned From The Honeymoon: In the same way she forbade the bride from allowing her groom or his family from chipping in for the reception, Emily wrote that “it is unthinkable for the bride to defray the least fraction of the cost of the wedding journey.” 13. Widows Should Not Have Bridesmaids When Remarrying: They’re less necessary since, according to Emily, she won’t be bothered to wear a dress with a long train — and it of course most certainly won’t be white, or feature orange blossoms on it, as those are emblems of virginity. Instead, they should don a “traveling dress” or other more casual design. She should also keep the ceremony small since her bare procession will do little to impress any guests — that is, unless “she is beautiful enough to compensate for all that is missing.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Wedding Superstitions
If there is anything you want to go perfectly, it’s your wedding day! You can have the best caterer, venue or planner, but what about the traditional aspects of a wedding? There are superstitions that we’ve all heard about what you should or shouldn’t do on your big day, but where did they come from?
A lot of cultures believe that rain on your wedding day is a sign of good luck. I know, I know, it seems like everybody’s worst nightmare! However, rain represents cleansing and new beginnings; both great ideals for newlyweds.
Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. This traditional mantra stems from a Victorian poem. Something old is supposed to ward off bad spirits and represent time and strength. Something new represents a fresh start and new beginnings. Something borrowed symbolizes another’s happiness, and blue represents love and purity.
We’ve all heard the saying that it’s, supposedly, bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before the wedding on the day of the ceremony. Apparently, this tradition dates back to times and cultures that practiced arranged marriages. People believed that if you let the bride and groom see each other before the ceremony, they may change their minds!
Several legends of different origin all share one ideal; that giving knives as wedding gifts is bad luck. A knife represents severance. Some say that it will end the friendship between the giver and the receiver, while others say it will break the marriage of the newlyweds.
Distinctivelysouthernwedding.com 78
In ancient cultures, new brides were considered to be susceptible to evil spirits as the passed into their new life as a wife. For this reason, grooms carried them over the threshold so that their feet wouldn’t touch the ground and the spirits couldn’t enter their bodies.
