TIME to

PARTY

MORE THAN JUST ONE DAY OF FUN! BY MEGAN ZINGER

Congratulations on your engagement! Now it’s time to start planning all the fun parties before the big day. First, of course, choose a date that you and your spouse want to have the official wedding on. After that, you can start planning out each party based on the timeline you’ve chosen. Let the celebrations begin! ENGAGEMENT PARTY The engagement party is the first event to take place after the proposal. Depending on how long you plan to be engaged, you can arrange to have the party weeks or months after the engagement. It is really up to the newly engaged couple when the best time to throw the party will be for them. Traditionally, the engagement party is hosted by the bride’s parents, but anyone can be the host — even the couple themselves if they choose! The first steps are picking a date, creating the guest list and finding a venue or house to host. Little details, such as menu and decor, can come after. BRIDAL OR COUPLE SHOWER As the big day approaches, the bridal shower is an opportunity for the almost bride to be celebrated and for guests to give gifts. Typically, bridal showers take place two months to two weeks away from the wedding date. As for who is to host the bridal shower, that is really up to the bride. Anyone from aunts, cousins, grandmothers, mother-of-the-bride or friends, tend to host. The almost newlyweds can even decide to do a couple shower to be more inclusive. Couple showers have become increasingly popular over the past few years and allow the celebration of both people getting married. BACHELORETTE & BACHELOR PARTY For the bachelorette and bachelor parties, the maid of honor and best man are typically the ones to plan this outing. Whether you decide to keep it local or travel, that will be up to the soon-to-be bride and groom! A few popular bachelorette and bachelor parties are Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, Cabo, Key West, New Orleans and many more! It’s important not to plan these trips too early or late before the wedding. Between one to four months out is ideal. Be sure to give attending guests one to two months before the trip to plan accordingly for tickets and passports. REHEARSAL DINNER Wedding rehearsals are crucial in making sure your big day runs smoothly. They are also considered the “kick-off” to your wedding weekend and typically occur the night before the wedding. The type of rehearsal dinner will be up to the couple, from a backyard barbecue to a formal sit-down dinner. It just depends on personal preference. The first thing to do at this event is to rehearse the wedding ceremony at the venue with all wedding party present. Then on to dinner, usually at another location. Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is hosted by the groom’s family if not the couple themselves. This is a special evening as it is an opportunity to share a more intimate and relaxed time with primarily family and the wedding party . Usually out of town guests and other close friends may be included as well. Remember: The purpose of these parties and showers is to celebrate you and your spouse. So try to relax, have fun, make memories, enjoy the company of family and friends and be spoiled a bit— you deserve it!

8 WINTER 2022

Cheers!

PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR

WITH SOUTHERN EVENTS PARTY RENTAL COMPANY PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ANGEL PATRICIA PHOTOGRAPHY

If you love event design that is creative and confident, then you’ll fall head over heels for the 2022 Pantone Color of the Year, Very Peri! A soft blue with violet-red undertones, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, is described to have a “spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence.” And for a year where event trends include vintage inspiration and luxe details, what color could be better? So to help you plan a memorable and photo-worthy event, get inspired by event design incorporating Pantone’s color of the year.

Whimsical Event Design

By far, our favorite aspect of this color of the year is the whimsy that it lends to an event! A unique mix of blue and purple, Very Peri oozes youthful luxury. Therefore, when featuring this color at your event, we recommend opting for rentals that are equally lighthearted. For example, complement any dining table with our classic Antique White Bentwood chairs. Or create a contemporary twist with any of our on-trend acrylic chairs, such as the Carrigan side chair.

Perfect Very Peri Linens

If you’re looking for an easy way to feature this fun color without overwhelming, our top is to run with a set of colorful linens! Easy to build on top of, even for an amateur host, it can be used to create various table settings. A few of our current favorites include Wisteria Satin and Lilac Poly. For an extra luxurious pop of purple, you might also consider our Lavender Velvet – even just for napkins. 10 WINTER 2022

Colors That Lend Contrast

Although beautiful, Very Peri is a color that, in large quantities, can be overwhelming. To break it up, be sure to feature a mix of contrasting colors. To keep your overall event palette light and airy, go with a classic and crisp white, as shown with our delicate Darcy China. If you prefer a bolder theme, go big with our stunning Onyx Earthen China. Then, of course, don’t be afraid to add more color! Our Amber Goblets features a vintage design and unique color, perfect for a unique bohemian look. Feeling inspired by event design incorporating Pantone’s color of the year? Contact our team today at info@southerneventsonline.com, and we’ll help you create a one-of-a-kind look featuring this stunning color. || MARRY ME || BY EMMA CHENNAULT

We are currently in a period where technology is the ruler of everything. It is incorporated in almost everything that we do in our daily life, and we have come to enjoy the benefits that it provides. Digitalizing your wedding can allow you and your guests a unique experience to share things a lot quicker than the “normal” wedding procedures.

Welcome to the Digital Age HOW TO DIGITALIZE YOUR WEDDING

WEDDING WEBSITES Wedding websites are a valuable tool for brides and grooms to help share information with their guests. These will be the home for updates, registries, RSVPing, the bride and groom’s story, things to do near the venue, engagement photos and many more. Some of the more popular

with tableware, linens, rentals, & styling expertise for your big day!

websites are Minted, Joy, Zola and The Knot. After you decide what you want out of the website, you can then choose and start developing your site. WEDDING HASHTAGS A wedding hashtag is one of the first things that brides and grooms come up with after their engagement, which usually incorporates both last names into a catchy hashtag for social media posts. The most important thing to remember when creating this hashtag is to make sure it is unique. That will ensure that your pictures will be the only ones to show up under it. You will also want to make the spelling easy, avoid using the same letters back-to-back and always capitalize the first letter of each word to make it easier to read.

If you have trouble thinking of your hashtag, many online tools can help. There are hashtag generators online, Facebook groups you can join and you can even hire someone who will come up with one for you. SNAPCHAT GEOFILTERS Snapchat geofilters are a fun way for your guests to post about your wedding with a graphic created by you. To create a geofilter, you can go onto the Snapchat website or app, select the area you would like it to be active and then upload your design. Geofilters can cost anywhere from $5 to $20 per day to cover the average size of a suburban home. This price does change based on the square footage of the area and the location of the venue.

REVEL

In The Moment FIND THE DRESS YOU WILL REMEMBER FOREVER

Adorn is a bridal shop that strives to offer a truly bespoke and memorable experience for each and every bride. We know that finding your dream dress isn’t always easy and can sometimes feel discouraging. Our philosophy is simple: empowered brides are the best brides. This is your day. You should feel special and supported. Our goal is to create a moment of pure joy when you try on your wedding dress. We want you to step up to the pedestal, look in the mirror and think — wow! You’re gorgeous, you’re glowing and you’re a bride! That’s why we take the time to get to know you before you even enter our salon. We want to understand what you’re hoping to look and feel like on your wedding day so your expert stylist can pull the perfect dresses for you. We are here to make finding the dress you love effortless. After the pandemic it’s harder to quickly purchase all sorts of things, from cars to cream cheese. It’s more difficult to purchase a designer wedding dress on a short timeline as well. That’s why it’s important that brides start shopping and decide on their wedding dress nine to twelve months before their wedding date. Most designer wedding dresses are made by hand for that individual bride upon purchase. This process can take up to six to nine months, especially when there are supply-chain constraints. In addition, alterations can take one to three months. Our advice to brides: if you are less than a year before your wedding date, you need to shop for your dress. STEP 1. SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT Tell us about you, your dreams, and your aspirations

STEP 3. SAY YES WITH CONFIDENCE Choose the dress that makes you look and feel beautiful!

STEP 2. TRY ON DRESSES Try on your hand-selected designer gowns, curated to your unique and individual style.

Jordan Cheshire & Jonathan Clint Eudy S E P TE M B E R 5 , 2 02 1 On Sunday, September 5th, 2021, Jordan Cheshire and Clint Eudy shared a magical wedding in the rolling hills of College Grove surrounded by their friends and family. Both Georgia locals, the two met in downtown Athens and got engaged in 2020 at Whispering Pines Plantation near Albany, Georgia. Troubadour Golf and Field Club in Tennessee, made a perfect, warm countryside wedding venue for the Georgia natives. Jordan walked down the aisle wearing a stunning mermaid fit custom gown by Olia Zavozina with low V cuts, front and back. Her bridal bouquet consisted of white flowers and greenery and included a piece of fabric from her mother’s wedding dress to hold together the bouquet. Clint wore a clean-cut Armani classic tuxedo with a bowtie and black shoes. The couple shared their special first dance to Can’t Help Falling in Love by Haley Reinhart. 14 WINTER 2022

The reception area had a beautiful baby’s breath flower tunnel covered with twinkle lights and other assorted flowers. Jordan changed into a fitted, short gown with feathers and long sheer tulle sleeves for the reception. Guests enjoyed a beautiful gourmet meal before the fabulous dessert; a signature Hallelujah! wedding cake was served made by Leland Cakes— designed to honor Jordan’s parent’s wedding cake— along with a chocolate truffle groom’s cake. Behind the two cakes, Jordan and Clint had a family tree cake wall with framed photographs to honor family members. September 5th will forever hold a special place in the couple’s hearts and will always be a day to reminisce.

TOP TEN

Wedding Songs SONGS THAT ARE SURE TO TOUCH ON EVERY EMOTION BY MEGAN ZINGER

When it comes time to choose songs for your wedding, it can be overwhelming just how many options are out there. You may already have a special song with your spouse or your parents. But, remember, the type of song you choose will really set the emotion in the room. Do you prefer country music? Maybe a classic or oldie song? Or perhaps pop is more your style? We compiled a list of ten songs we think are the perfect mix of genres for first dances, father-daughter dances and mother-son dances. Put your dancing shoes on and have a tissue nearby!

This song is said to have been written about John Legend’s passionate love for his wife, Chrissy Teigen. The song came out the same year John and Chrissy got married, so this song fits perfectly as a first dance choice.

Country-pop duo, Dan+Shay wrote this song to describe the groom’s delight when he gets to first look at his bride. This song would be perfect for a bride walking down the aisle or for a first dance — be sure to grab the tissues!

Walk down the aisle with this ‘60s classic song from the King, Elvis Presley, himself. It is one of Elvis’s most romantic and famous songs from his singing career.

This song is the perfect slow dance pick for a fatherdaughter dance. The song’s underlying meaning talks about a father’s role in his daughter’s life until she is married and that she will always be his baby girl.

This song may remind you of the movie Twilight, but it is stunning when played as an instrumental on a violin while walking down the aisle.

Tim McGraw poignant song, is sure to make the whole crowd emotional for a father-daughter dance. The song revolves around a father watching his daughter grow up. Talk about waterworks!

The title says it all with this marital-themed song. It was considered a smash hit in 2010 and will touch on all emotions during a first dance.

This Jack Johnson classic, is a sweet reminder that you and your spouse are better when you’re together. Its acoustic rock sound is perfect for a more upbeat first dance. 16 WINTER 2022

This sentimental song by the iconic Whitney Houston is perfect for a mother-son dance. The song speaks of strength and looking up to an important figure in your life.

An acknowledgement of love from sons to their mothers, this song by Edwin McCain is the perfect mother-son dance that will cause teary eyes all around.

Smart Planning Before Saying “I Do” PRENUP 101 & OTHER PRE-WEDDING THINGS TO CONSIDER COURTESY OF BRIDES.COM

It’s important in today’s world to plan for all possibilities BEFORE you walk down the aisle. It is also a great idea, with thoughts of happily ever after in your head, to go ahead and take care of all the business of merging your life with another, pre-wedding day. What is a Prenup? A prenup is a written contract where soonto-be-married couples state their rights and responsibilities regarding premarital and marital assets and debts in the event that the two parties get divorced. A prenup is not a bad thing to consider and does not mean you will end in divorce. If anything, it helps couples communicate their finances, any accrued debt, general attitude about money, and overall spending and saving habits before the wedding. Who Should Consider a Prenup? If one party is wealthier than the other. If any debt is present for one party. Another reason to consider is if one or both parties already have children. A prenup will help protect the financial interests of the children. When Should The Prenup Process Begin? The prenup process is different for each couple, but starting it as soon as possible is ideal. Finalizing the prenup agreement thirty days before the wedding is recommended to reduce any stress or tensions. Like anything that involves attorney practice, prenups take time to ensure everything is correct. Other Things To Do Pre-Wedding: • Get marriage license and make copies • Update name on Social Security card • Update driver’s license with new name • Update passport and travel documents • Update last name on any credit cards • Update rent/mortgage/utility documents • Update any auto-pay accounts • Change last name on all bank accounts

The neckline and shoulder straps have a beautiful border framing the face and matches the detachable dual shoulder Watteau. There are so many similarities to the shoulder pads reminiscent of the 1940s Paris fashions worn by Joan Crawford, Marlena Dietrich and Rita Hayworth. Brides are falling in love once again with Hollywood fashion from bygone eras. 18 WINTER 2022

Aisha This Aline boasts a plunging Décolletage with beautiful beading encompassing an empire waist and crossed bustline pattern. If you have never considered an empire waist or empire bust line, you should. It creates a more curvaceous bust when it may be physically lacking on a bride and minimizes the size of the waist. This specially designed glitter pattern fabric with the luxurious maharani silk tulle pleats creates an eye catching flow. The extravagant Cathedral length cape with marabou and ostrich feather embellishments ads the perfect decadent charm turning this from an elegant dress to one befitting a Contessa.

Chesara Chesara blends the charm of bygone-eras with the modern chic of new. High collared presence in fashion is making a comeback, and yes most certainly in the bridal industry. The understated elegance of fabric gently gracing the neck and jawline is a force to be reckoned with in Europe. Pay attention brides, you’ll want to be one of the first to embrace this Parisian fashion trend. Padded shoulders and the gentle folds of the 1990’s balloon sleeves is also seeing a resurgence in bridal fashion for 2023. Chesara has a wonderful mix of silk fabrics, boho inspired embroidery, sheer balloon sleeves with embellished wrist cuffs, and a dimensional scalloped train to die for second only to the the feather accents strategically placed throughout this bridal creation.

20 WINTER 2022

Batistiella Who said strapless is out of fashion? If it is structurally sound with extensive boning, drill and internal support systems the likes of which is seen in Batistiella, a strapless sheath is no longer a bride or photographer’s nightmare. No more slippage exposing bodily features everyone wished remained hidden, and no more candid shots ruined by the bride tugging on her dress. This architectural wonder features original silk embroidery with an exquisite Chantilly lace under shell, single string hand beading, dimensional sequins and delicate 3D flowers. The sweetheart neckline is just captivating. The piece de’ resistance, the incredible high color silk tulle watteau with embellished cap sleeves states, “I am a bridal force to be resigned with reckoned with, all other Divas stand aside”. FAT H E R G RO O M OF THE

BY DANNY ANDERSON

“FATHER OF THE GROOM” – well, that is a new one for me. I have served as Chair, Co-Chair, Committee Member and Worker Bee for many events — some large and some small — but never a Father of the Groom. I just experienced this very role, as my son just got married! But, what exactly was I expected to do? Over the years, my wife and I have attended many wonderful and fun weddings. So far, all the “Fathers of the Grooms” did about the same thing. They showed up, looked dapper, mingled with the guests and did what they were asked to do. I am sure they did a lot more than that, but they all looked calm and collected on the surface. So, when I found myself in that role, I wanted to find out just what the duties of the Father of the Groom were, so I went to my wisest friend — Google. 30 WINTER 2022

I found out that my number one role was to support my son and be a calming influence. That one I knew I could do with pleasure. Secondly, be involved in wedding festivities as much (or as little) as the bride and groom wanted me to be. Those who know me well know that the “as little” part was challenging for me to pull off. However, all of the articles I read said that the Father of the Groom should try not to interfere and not get too involved unless the bride and groom ask for input. OK, I gave it a good try! According to the articles that my friend Google pulled up for me, today’s wedding arrangements can be much more flexible than the traditional wedding I experienced. The groom’s parents may take on a more active role in the wedding planning and the wedding itself. It all goes back to what the bride and groom want.

While the responsibilities of the Father of the Groom are not high profile, they are important. The below are traditional ideas of what the groom’s parents do, but keep in mind that you take the lead from your son. • • • • • • •

Support your son and be a calming influence. Contact the bride’s parents to arrange a meeting and offer congratulations. Review financial responsibilities and how you will be involved. Provide the bride and groom a list of wedding guests with their complete addresses. Host the rehearsal dinner and work on your toast to the Bride and Groom. Mingle with wedding guests. Have fun and enjoy every minute of this special time.

Wedding etiquette for parents of the groom has often been neglected. However, changing attitudes in modern society have opened new doors for the groom’s parents to take on a more significant role. Navigating the gray areas of wedding etiquette is often difficult, but being polite, kind and helpful always makes the process easier. The one thing I know for sure is that I was proud to be a Father of the

Groom. My wife and I are so proud of the person that our son has become and are so very excited about having his beautiful wife as a loving member of our family. Weddings come in all shapes and sizes, and no matter which they may be, for me, they are all a time of celebration and a sacred commitment of the heart. For future Fathers of the Groom who may want to know their role, I suggest that you do what I did – Google it! If nothing else, it is an interesting read.

Caroline Dean Tuma & Jeffrey Walker Brink D E C E M B E R 18, 2 02 1 For Caroline Tuma and Captain Jeffrey Walker Brink, US Army, their love story started when they were both students at The University of Tennessee College of Law. The two were engaged in December of 2020 at the bride’s family farm in Rutherford county. For the big day, Caroline’s dress was a white, offthe-shoulder ballgown paired with a gorgeous crystal-trimmed veil and blusher. The bride’s bouquet consisted of white peonies and roses, complemented by fresh evergreen from the bride’s family farm. The bouquet also included unique sprigs of a Carolina pine tree given to the bride by her uncle, Kevin Carroll, when she

was a child. Jeffrey wore a classic black tuxedo with a black tie, cummerbund and engraved cuff links given to him by the bride. The wedding ceremony took place at First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The bridal processional was Trumpet Voluntary, played by the bride’s cousin, Thomas Falls, and organist, Sandy Arndt. Elliott and Janae Peterson provided vocals for the ceremony. The recessional song Joy to the World was played after being pronounced husband and wife. The wedding reception took place at the premier

private country club, Stones River County Club, in Murfreesboro. The ballroom was decorated with all-white tables, chairs and chair covers. Southern Sky draped white tulle and string lights elegantly over the dance floor and behind the band. Stones River Country Club provided an Italian buffet for dinner. The wedding cake consisted of two different layers of flavors, almond and snickerdoodle. Around 10 pm, chicken tacos and beef sliders were served as a “late-night snack” for guests. At the end of the evening, guests sent off the happy couple by shaking jingle bells. It indeed was a happily ever after for Caroline and Jeffrey!

HIRE YOUR FAVORITE IMPERSONATOR For a fun touch, hire an impersonator to float around the party! Elvis Presley, Britney Spears or even Madonna would bring some life to the party.

or “baarat” based on the region. It is a mini-parade that includes dancing, music, a special rice toss called “akshat,” and the groom wearing a garland and carrying a lit lamp called “arati.”

Norway

A Norwegian tradition for the bride is to wear a beautiful ornate silver and gold crown with small charms hanging off of it. Tradition says that the sound of the charms clinking around is supposed to deter evil spirits. Norwegian weddings do not have typical wedding cakes. Instead, they serve a special-occasion cake called “kransekake.” It consists of iced almond cake rings stacked from largest to smallest, giving it a cone shape. Often a wine bottle is placed in the center of the cake due to its unique shaping.

Brazil

Traditions of Love Across the World MULTICULTURAL WEDDINGS

Brazilian brides and grooms only have one wedding ring, unlike in America, where an elaborate proposal usually ends with a diamond engagement ring. In Brazil, the couple makes a mutual decision to get married and buy the rings together, typically just a band. The rings are worn on the right hand during the engagement, not the left. And during the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom make the switch to their left hands to signify the shift from engaged to marriage.

Mexico

During the ceremony at a Mexican wedding, a flower and rosary beaded “lazo” (lasso) is placed around the necks of the bride and groom in a figure-eight shape. The tradition says that “el lazo” signifies the couple’s union. The figure-eight shape also represents the infinity symbol and is a sign of long-lasting marriage. BY MEGAN ZINGER

There are many unique ways that different cultures celebrate weddings and say “I Do.” However, the beautiful part about a wedding is, no matter what the tradition is, it’s the celebration of love and the joining of two souls. Here is a list of interesting traditions from a few countries around the globe.

China

In China, brides typically walk down the aisle in an embroidered, slim-fitting traditional dress called “cheongsam,” also known as “qipao.” The bride will then change into a gown for the reception. And it doesn’t end there. Chinese brides will change into a third and final cocktail dress 36 WINTER 2022

for the night. Red and gold colors can be seen dispersed throughout a Chinese wedding. Red symbolizes love, prosperity, fertility, success, happiness, honor and loyalty, whereas gold symbolizes wealth.

India

Before the wedding, it is tradition for the Indian bride and her closest female friends to have their hands and feet painted with henna, a type of dye made from a plant, in detailed designs at something called a Mehndi ceremony. Fun fact, it is common for the bride to hide her partner’s name within the design and have them try and find it later — believing this will reflect patience to come in their marriage. The groom’s arrival at an Indian wedding is a celebration within itself called “vara yatra”

Turkey

The Turkish flag, consisting of a red crescent and star, is typically placed outside the groom’s home by his friends the day he is supposed to wed. Then, depending on the region, certain items are placed on top of the flag, signifying the ceremony has begun.

Germany

Once married, newlyweds in Germany are presented with a tree log and saw. Then, together, the couple works to saw the log in half, representing their ability to work together and overcome obstacles.

Philippines

Filipino couples are served a type of sticky rice cake called “kalamay.” The rice cakes are wrapped in palm leaves are meant to symbolize the couple sticking together through their marriage.

Nigeria

The breaking of a kola nut signifies the start of traditional events for many tribes in Nigeria. It is also a way for the elders to welcome the guests. The kola nut must first be blessed before being broken into many pieces then handed out.

Russia

A delicious Russian tradition is sharing “karavay,” a sweetbread with interlocking rings to symbolize faithfulness, and wheat to symbolize prosperity. The tradition says whoever takes the biggest bite with no hands will be considered the head of the family.

CHASE & BELLA LIVESAY’S ELOPEMENT STORY

38 WINTER 2022

BY MEGAN ZINGER

Sometimes a big, elaborate wedding can be overwhelming and not be the path some couples want to take. A good alternative to a big wedding is eloping. When you hear the word elope, the first thing that might come to mind is getting hitched in Vegas at one of the drive-thru chapels or going to a courthouse. But it does not have to be like that. Elopements can be beautiful and intimate for the two getting married. For Chase and Bella Livesay, they were both drawn to the idea of having a simple, intimate elopement.

everywhere we were looking, neither of us had ever been to,” Bella said. “I stumbled across an Instagram page called Elopement Las Vegas, and I immediately fell in love with their pictures, locations and packages.” The couple had an amazing experience with eloping and wouldn’t change anything about their special day. The company they used took care of permits, photography and even the decorations. Bella’s favorite memory was her and Chase’s first dance in the middle of the beautiful red rocks of the Nevada — just the two of them.

Bella and Chase met in high school as teenagers. When Bella was seventeen, they found out she was pregnant with their now five-year-old son, Avery. The two have been together ever since and wouldn’t change a thing. When it came time to start planning for a wedding, Bella felt overwhelmed with the little things and told Chase about the idea of eloping, which he agreed to almost immediately. Bella said both of their families were understanding of her and Chase’s decision to elope.

Bella’s advice to couples thinking of eloping is to just do it. “Ultimately, your day is about you and your fiancé,” Bella said. “So, if that means a big wedding with all your friends and family, then do it, but if it means an amazing, intimate trip to somewhere beautiful and new, then do that. I would also really recommend using a planner or company located in the city you’re eloping. It definitely lessened the stress of planning from across the country.”

They chose Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada as the location of their one-of-a-kind wedding day. Bella came across the state park while searching on social media. “There were so many beautiful options, but it was difficult because

Bella jokes that all she and Chase had to do was just show up, and that’s precisely how it went. The planner took Bella’s vision and turned it into reality. “Do what is going to make your day the most enjoyable and memorable for you and your partner,” Bella said.

Never Forgotten and Always Loved HOW TO HONOR LOVED ONES AT YOUR WEDDING BY EMMA CHENNAULT

Weddings are a place where love is celebrated. Your guest list is specially curated to include people who have impacted your life in some way. Deciding how to honor a deceased loved one on your big day is something that many brides and grooms struggle with. However, there are many ways to do something special to remember someone you wish could be there. The beauty of weddings is that they are unique to each bride and groom. Some couples may want to honor their loved ones privately, whereas others might want to include all their guests. However, a balance needs to be achieved to keep these moments about happiness and remember the good times that were shared with the ones who have been lost. Here are a few ways to honor your deceased loved ones:

Reserve a Seat

Place a photo of them and add some of their favorite items in their honor.

Display Family Photos

Choose a place at the reception or ceremony and create a space to display photos of your loved ones.

Add an Heirloom

Pin an heirloom that belonged to that family member to your bouquet, dress or tuxedo.

A Note on the Program

Include a small passage on the program for your guests to be able to take a moment and remember the loved ones who could not be there.

A Moment of Reflection

Take a moment during the ceremony or reception and have a moment of silence.

Light a Candle

Light a candle at the ceremony or reception and decorate that area with photos and items they loved.

Make a Donation

Choose a charity that your loved one supported and donate in their name. You can include your guests by asking them to donate as well.

BEST BACHELORETTE DESTINATION

BY CLAIRE PAGE

Over the past few years, Nashville has become one of the most popular destinations to take a bachelorette trip. Two years ago, before I had moved to Nashville, my best friend decided to have her bachelorette trip here, and let me tell you, it was the most fun I have ever had! Nashville is known as NashVegas because it is called the Vegas of the South. So it is the perfect nickname to go along with all the fun activities to do here. Nashville is jam-packed with places to go from party buses, fun directive hotels with rooftops and Broadway bars. Here are a few of my favorite places and activities to do when I was attending a bachelorette party here!

WHERE TO STAY

There are so many places to stay in Nashville that it can be overwhelming, especially when you have never been to the city and are unfamiliar with the different neighborhoods. You want to be in a safe, walkable area, whether you are staying in a hotel or an Airbnb. Staying near downtown Nashville would be the best option, so you are close to all the fun! I suggest staying in the heart of actual downtown Nashville, or a close by neighborhood like the Gulch, 12 South or Midtown. If you have a larger party size, Airbnb is the way to go! It allows you to have tons of room for your guests. If your party is on the smaller side and you want to be all together, I suggest a fun hotel. Two of my favorite hotels in Nashville are The Graduate Hotel and The Virgin Hotel; both perfect for a bachelorette trip!

WHERE TO BAR HOP

When you think of Nashville, most likely your next thought is Broadway and live music. Of course, one of the main attractions in Nashville is Broadway itself. With so many bars to barhop from, and live music filling the air, you are bound to have a great time with your gals! Some of my favorite bars on Broadway are The Stage, Florida Georgia Line ( Luke Bryan’s 46 WINTER 2022

bar), and The Valentine, just to name a few. But, if Broadway isn’t your scene, do not worry! Midtown is a great alternative and is a little more laid back than the hustle and bustle of Broadway. One of my favorite Nashville bars is Loser’s Bar, located in Midtown. Every Friday night, Loser’s has their famous “Loser’s Band” that plays, which you do not want to miss! In the summer, they even have Whiskey Jam, a free live outdoor concert with an amazing lineup.

WHERE TO EAT

Nashville has a ton of places to eat, with different types of cuisine and for all meal types, whether it be breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. The must-haves that you will want to add to your list are The Hampton Social, The Listening Room, Liberty Common, Butchertown Hall and Bartaco. The Hampton Social and Liberty Common are near each other and just a few blocks from Broadway. Both overlook the river and have the best bachelorette and girly vibe you could want! The Listening Room is a live songwriter cafe where you can eat great food and listen to upcoming artists. Just make sure to buy your ticket beforehand on their website. Finally, if you are looking for good tacos and southwestern food, Butchertown Hall and Bartaco are your go-to places!

WHAT TO DO DURING THE DAY

There are so many things to choose from besides just going to a bar! The Nashville Tractor is one of my all-time favorite things to do; you get a tour of Nashville in a fun, unique way while having great music blaring! If you want to get away from the city life for the day, Arrington Vineyards is a great place to have a laid-back, fun day with your girls, and their wine is excellent. Go take those commemorative photos in front of the famous Nashville murals, 12 South or The Gulch - great areas to walk around and get quality tourist photos. Last but not least, the Dry Bar is the place to get pampered while getting the most amazing blowout. For more planning ideas nashvilleguru.com and sipsandthecitynash.com are great resources. The Sips and the City girls will even make reservations for you and plan your itinerary if you do not know where to begin. Nashville Guru is a mega website with all the things to do in Nashville in one spot. And the best part is, it is free and easy to use. I hope this guide gave you more insight on where to go when planning your most memorable bachelorette trip yet!

cherish your special day

FOREVER HOW TO PRESERVE WEDDING MEMORIES BY MEGAN ZINGER

Your wedding day is supposed to be one of the best days of your life. It’s one of those life milestones you dream about when you are young. A day filled with intimate vows, flowers, happy moments, laughter and good company can be so fun yet go by in a blink of an eye. So, how can you preserve some of the special moments that happen during this big day? Here are a few ideas to keep your wedding a part of you, forever and always.

Your Flower Bouquet

Flowers are beautiful and full of life but eventually wilt and die. Preserving your wedding bouquet is memorabilia that you can cherish forever. First, you can press and then frame them. This process includes placing your flowers between two sheets of parchment paper and then putting something heavy over them for seven to ten days to dry them out.

Your Wedding Dress

Unfortunately, a few things can happen if you do not preserve your dress properly—yellowing of the fabric, oxidation spots, mold and creasing, to name a few. The first step in maintaining your dress is getting it professionally cleaned.

A good way to re-purpose wine bottles, whiskey bottles or, perhaps, the champagne bottle used for your first toast is by making them into candles. You can customize your favorite scent and light it while having a cozy reminder of your wedding day.

Videographer

Having a videographer at your wedding can be just as important as having a photographer. Pictures say a thousand words, but a video tells a story in live-action and helps you reminisce on your special day. A video can simply be downloaded on a laptop or phone for you to look back on at any time.

Another fun DIY idea is using resin letters for you and your spouse’s initials and adding the flowers. Supplies can be purchased or bought as a kit. The process includes mixing the ingredients and then pouring them into silicone molds to form the letters.

Guest Signatures

48 WINTER 2022

Vows are an intimate oath of promises and a profession of love towards your spouse. Writing them down makes it that more sentimental. Once the ceremony is over, make sure they are in a safe place. Framed vows serve as a great reminder of what’s important to your marriage, especially during tough times.

Your Glass Bottles

Another way to preserve your bouquet’s flowers is to turn them into a paperweight. This is the perfect route to use if you want to keep your flowers looking perfect forever. The flowers are freeze-dried to keep the color and shape before being turned into a paperweight. The paperweight would serve as a great wedding reminder to have on a coffee table or office desk.

Where guests enter the venue, have a frame or poster sitting out with a few colored sharpies of choice for them to sign. It is a way to look back at the guests who attended the wedding and shared your special day with you! Another idea is to set out stationary paper and pens for guests to write messages or marriage advice. Guests can then fold up their notes and put them in a jar to look back on.

Your Vows

It is recommended not to wait longer than six weeks to get your dress cleaned. The next step is storing in an airtight box where only nitrogen is inside, preventing oxidation. Lastly, be sure to store your dress in a cool, dark place that avoids direct sunlight, which may cause fading or the dress to turn yellow.

Fur EVER IN LOVE HOW MAKE YOUR PETS A PART OF YOUR WEDDING BY MEGAN ZINGER

Our pets are a vital part of our everyday routine and are considered a part of the family. They are there for you during the good, the bad and the ugly. So why not make it a point to include or, at the very least, acknowledge them during your wedding? Of course, there are ways for more or less involvement with your animal(s) at your wedding, depending on the venue’s guidelines.

First Look

The concept of first looks has become increasingly popular over the past couple of years. Typically, first look photos are done with the groom and father of the bride. So, why not do a first look session with your pup? It brings a whole new dynamic to your wedding photos and showcases the special bond between owner and dog.

50 WINTER 2022

Cake Accents

Including your dog or cat in the wedding cake is a subtle acknowledgment to your furry friend without them being there. You can get a personalized cake topper of your furry friend that fits your design preferences, whether that be a trail of pawprints on the side of the cake, a cat figurine peeking around the corner of the cake or the bride and groom figurines holding their pup. You can even make it look like the pet figurine has taken a bite out of the cake!

Ring Bearer

Use your male pup instead of the typical child or baby as the ring bearer! Plus, any excuse to dress up your male dog in a fancy bowtie or dog tux is a must. Make sure to strap down the rings and keep them in a safe container to avoid falling loose while the dog is walking down the aisle. It is best to have your pup on a leash for this, so there is no running off from surrounding distractions.

Flower Pup

Similar to the ring bearer concept, having your girl pup act as the flower girl instead of a child would be the cutest! You can dress your dog up in flower attire and, if cooperative, the dog can hold a little basket with flower petals in it. Again, it may be advised to keep your pet on a leash while they walk down the aisle.

Standing At The Altar

furry friend stand next to you and your spouse as “Dog of Honor” during the ceremony. It is a simple yet meaningful way to include your dog during the wedding.

Wedding Theme

If your pup can’t attend the wedding in person, there are subtle ways to acknowledge them through decorations. For example, you could do dog-inspired place cards to set on all the tables for the guests. If alcohol is being served, you can do a signature drink inspired by your dog. Along with the desserts at the wedding, you could hand out custom cookies with your pet’s face on them for an adorable treat.

Heather Wilkes Pearson & John Travis Burch III M AY 2 2, 2 02 1 For Heather and Travis, it was love at first sight. The couple met while working at a children’s school in Nashville on Travis’ first day! They got engaged at Mere Bulles in October of 2019 but initially were there to celebrate his birthday. It was a special full-circle moment for Heather and Travis because fast forward to the wedding day, they ended up having their reception at Mere Bulles! Heather wore a luxury ballgown covered in intricate baroque lace made of lustrous white sequins. Her bouquet consisted of an 52 WINTER 2022

assortment of white, cream, peach, pink and lavender roses, along with purple lilacs, pink ranunculus, white hydrangeas and thin-leaved eucalyptus. Travis’ attire was a classic black Ralph Lauren suit with a skinny black tie. He was going for a timeless look inspired by The Beatles. The wedding ceremony took place at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nashville and was officiated by Reverend Dr. Brian Hooper. Organist Dr. Kristen Hansen played the ceremony music for the seating of parents and grandparents, bridesmaids processional, the bride’s processional and the recessional.

The wedding reception was a dinner party celebrated and catered by Mere Bulles. The wedding cake was a chocolate and almond cake with buttercream and decadent flowers added by the florist. Copper Whisk Cakes designed the wedding cake to look like Travis’ grandparent’s wedding cake from 1956! For Heather and Travis, their wedding day felt like the longest AND shortest day of their lives, but truly the happiest day thus far!

Bride & Groom Gift Exchange DAY OF THE WEDDING GIFTS BY CHRISTIAN HEADDEN

A wedding is something that you look forward to your whole life! But, as the day finally comes, along with the hustle and bustle of events, you need something special to connect you and your groom. In addition to a heartfelt, tear-jerking letter, a gift is a perfect way to remind each other that the day is about their connection and love. Here are a few of my favorite “day of” wedding gifts:

For Him Cuff Links Personally, I went with 18K gold cuff links from Poshmark. Websites like Poshmark and Etsy are great for getting cuff links for a good deal and getting personalized. My husband absolutely loved these and wore them for our wedding! Leather Passport Cover This gift is great for jet setters and those going international for their honeymoon. A passport can easily get lost; therefore, having a passport cover can be easier to spot and keep up with. Plus, leather is great quality that will last throughout all your traveling adventures! Personalized Leather Wallet By now, chances are that your future husband has had the same wallet for many years. A leather wallet is a staple item for any man! You can personalize it with their name, a quote or a sports team. You can shop for personalized engraved gifts on Etsy. Watch A watch is a classic and timeless gift to give your groom. This gift can be sentimental, stylish and a symbol that your groom can wear every day! You can even engrave the watch with a personal quote like, “I will love you every second of the day.” 54 WINTER 2022

Personalized Handkerchief Have your heartfelt vows embroidered or pass down a family handkerchief for your husband. This is a unique gift that can be used not only on your wedding day but for a lifetime! Cologne Something tried and true, or something new. Cologne is a gift that will make your groom not only smell great but have a signature scent that is special to both of you! It is a great gift that will get its use over the days and years to come.

For Her Earrings My husband gave me these three pearl drop earrings that I wear on special occasions! I love how classic these earrings are, and it is even more special knowing that my husband picked them out for me. When I wear them, they remind me of the most special day of my life! Necklace Necklaces are an item that most people do not buy for themselves, which means it is more special and sentimental when given by the groom. This piece is a gift now but can eventually turn into a family heirloom, making it even sweeter to receive, knowing that the necklace can be passed down one day!

Shoes The shoes you wear on your wedding day are one of a kind, a pair that you will forever remember, and even more exceptional when gifted from your groom! It is a gift that should be exchanged earlier in the day so you can have plenty of time for photographs and wear on your wedding day! Perfume This gift can be a scent that can be a traditional scent, a perfume that you have always wanted or one that is sentimental, that your mother or grandmother wore. The scent of perfume can bring back memories or start creating new ones – this is the perfect day to give your bride perfume! Engraved Jewelry Box An engraved jewelry box is a unique, thoughtful gift to give your bride-to-be on your wedding day! The box can have a sweet quote, letter or her new monogram with your wedding date that will be sure to make her smile! Lingerie If you want to spice things up, lingerie is the way to go! This intimate gift will boost your bride’s self-confidence and is sure to make her feel beautiful. Choose her favorite colors and go for silk or lace material!

The

Honeymoon s m a e r d of your WITH FRANKLIN TRAVEL SERVICES - A REJUVIA TRAVEL COMPANY The proposal is accepted, and a date is set for the wedding — time to start planning for the big day! Of course, you want everything to be as close to perfection as possible. You may have even hired a professional wedding consultant to take some of the stress away from wedding planning. So why not work with a professional travel agent to take the stress out of planning your honeymoon? It’s never too early to start planning. Do you want an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora? A soft adventure tour through the jungles of Costa Rica? How about a romantic villa stay in Tuscany? Or an African safari? Perhaps, an all-inclusive Caribbean resort or cruise? As you plan your honeymoon, discuss your thoughts and ideas of the ultimate destination for both of you. An agent can advise you of the right spots for nightlife, food tours or a great beach to chill out on after your wedding. Another critical factor is how much to budget for one of the most memorable trips of your life, and an agent can help you find the best value. Many couples choose to wait a day or two, or even a month, after the wedding to travel. Often international flights leave early

56 WINTER 2022

in the morning, meaning you would have to get to the airport as early as 3 am, which is impractical for the day after your wedding. Additionally, families who visit out of town may want to stay and spend time with the newlyweds. However, it is perfectly acceptable for you to plan for your honeymoon at the time that best suits you, whether that be the next day or months later. A travel agent can save a lot of time that you would spend planning and researching your honeymoon by gathering the information for you. As you travel, there are hidden costs that you might not have considered, but an agent can point some of those out to you. An agent will have destination information and access to honeymoon packages with extra amenities. In addition, agents will keep you updated on any visa or health requirements, which can change regularly. Enjoy the anticipation, but consult with a travel professional for stress-free planning. For more information on travel services, visit Rejuvia Travel Company’s website, rejuviatravel.com, or call at 615.791.4690 to talk to an agent today.

Seven Surprisingly Strict Wedding Etiquette Rules From Emily Post BY JESS CATCHER, COURTESY OF LITTLETHINGS.COM

Emily Post was renowned for her advice for behaving properly in society, especially when it came to the sometimes tricky realm of wedding etiquette. Most of us know the basics when it comes to the usual rules and traditions couples follow on their big day, but you might be surprised by just how strict Emily was when it came to her expectations for perfectly planned nuptials. Couples nowadays tend to buck pretty much all of these seemingly outdated rules — though they were as good as law back when Emily wrote them in 1922 in Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home. Take a look at the many surprisingly restrictive wedding rules she was famous for dishing out. You might even learn just how many of them you or your loved ones have broken on your own wedding days. 1. You Should Not Omit Inviting Friends Just Because They’re Poor: Obviously, most modern couples aren’t so gift-oriented that they would stoop to such tactics, but apparently it was a big enough issue back in the day for Emily to issue this “word of warning.” 2. The Groom’s Family Should Never Pay A Single Cent For the Reception: Couples today have no qualm sharing the financial load of the wedding day between them (though perhaps with some help from both sides of the family), but Emily was steadfastly against the idea. In fact, she lists

58 WINTER 2022

this as the “one unalterable rule,” saying further that “never under any circumstances should a wedding reception be given at the house of the groom’s family.” 3. The Bride Should Use A Stand-In at Rehearsal: Although Emily explains that the bride is in charge of the whole ordeal, she also claims that the future missus should never actually take part in it herself. Instead, she should use a “pseudobride” to go through the motions in her place. 4. The Best Man Should Have the Busiest Job: She claims the best man’s role is the most difficult on the dayof, describing them as a “cross between trained nurse, valet, general manager and keeper.” According to her, this means that his job entails keeping his “patient” (the groom) from getting too nervous by “jolly[ing] him along as best he can” while simultaneously delivering the bride and groom’s luggage to wherever they will be spending their first night as husband and wife. 5. Bridesmaids Are to Match Each Other Precisely: Although the color between each of the ladies can vary, Emily’s rules state that the texture and model must be exact replicas of the same design. She also says that the bride makes the selection of dress “without considering or even consulting them as to their taste or preference.”

The 700-acre family farm of Sara and Keith Shepherd, and their daughters, Jessica and Jackie Shepherd is home to two unique venue options and sits in the heart of the rolling hills of western Kentucky just north of Nashville. If outdoor weddings and nature are your thing, then the 4000 square foot Tobacco and Chapel barns are venues for getting married. The chapel barn has hardwood floors, crystal chandeliers, Edison string lightning, white church pews, and three different arches to choose from that all help to create that fairytale wedding you always dreamed of. The Tobacco barn has five antique crystal chandeliers, stained concrete floors, a deck and patio, and a 150-year-old outdoor stone fireplace. If modern industrial is your thing, you will love our newest venue, Keith Glen. With over 7000 square feet, Keith Glen is located in the woods with a pond and lighted fountain. Its features include a 30-foot wall of glass, a massive stone fireplace, exposed steel beams, concrete, several chandeliers, and tin and natural wood features. There is also a one-of-akind copper-topped bar!

6. The Bride Should Arrive Late for The Ceremony: For the “perfectly managed wedding,” Emily claims a bride should arrive one minute after the hour in order to give the latecomers a chance to find their place before her march begins. 7. Widows Should Not Have Bridesmaids When Remarrying: They’re less necessary since, according to Emily, she won’t be bothered to wear a dress with a long train — and it of course most certainly won’t be white, or feature orange blossoms on it, as those are emblems of virginity. Instead, they should don a “traveling dress” or other more casual design. She should also keep the ceremony small since her bare procession will do little to impress any guests — that is, unless “she is beautiful enough to compensate for all that is missing.”

Whichever venue you choose, the Shepherd Family and their staff will go above and beyond to ensure you will never forget your day at Burdoc Farms! Burdoc Farms 1655 Pleasant Grove Road Crofton, KY 42217 270.348.1483 burdocfarms@hotmail.com burdocfarms.com E Q@burdocfarms

Laura Grace Beck Dodd & Joseph Randolph Phillips JA N UA RY 1, 2 02 2 Laura Grace and Joe both grew up in the south but made their way separately to Portland, Oregon, where they met on a random yet fateful night out with friends. Joe proposed to Laura Grace after a fun and very eventful evening of night tubing in January of 2021, while on a trip to Mount Hood. The couple set their wedding date to ring in the new year – January 1, 2022. The ceremony was held at Vine Street Christian Church in Nashville with the reception following at Noelle Hotel. This location is a historic 1930s Art Deco space and was decorated with large white calla lily arrangements circled with gold 62 WINTER 2022

pedestal bowls filled with magnolia leaves and candles atop lovely sequin table coverings. The hotel provided the food including small bites for starters and a ‘New Year’s Day’ themed dinner menu. The bride wore a chic modern dress with a square neckline and three quarter length sleeves that carried the sweetest details. Her floor length and two-tiered soft tulle chapel length veil had a two-inch horsehair trim. The groom wore a classic tuxedo with black narrow notch lapel coat, white tuxedo shirt and black bow tie.

The wedding cake was a four-tiered almond cake; first layer filled with light raspberry mousseline. The top three tiers were filled with cream cheese filling, all frosted in buttercream. In lieu of a groom’s cake, there were two satellite cakes of carrot and strawberry. The bride and groom made their exit from the reception in a 1974 blue Volkswagen bus. After new COVID outbreaks surfaced, the couple chose to make a last-minute adjustment and stay in the country for their honeymoon. They enjoyed a wonderful vacation in the Art Deco historical district of Miami Beach, Florida

DINNER? for

RECIPES FOR TWO

BY CHRISTIAN DIAN HEADDEN

One of the hardest things about being married is figuring out what’s for dinner. It’s easy to reach for the phone or car key and get meals to-go. But cooking together can be a fun way for newlyweds to bond and spend quality time together. Over the last two years, my husband and I have experimented with lots of recipes and different meal kits. Here are some of our favorite recipes. Here are just a few of our favorites we have perfected and can enjoy for years to come!

Pan-Seared Cod with Pickled Onion & Arugula Salad Courtesy of Blue Apron 2 SERVINGS | 35 MINS INGREDIENTS 2 cod fillets 2 cloves garlic 1 oz. dried Medjool dates 1 oz. butter 3/4 lb. golden potatoes 2 oz. arugula

What’s

PREPARE THE INGREDIENTS Remove the honey from the refrigerator to bring to room temperature. Place an oven rack in the center of the oven; preheat to 450°F. Wash and dry the fresh produce. Cut the potatoes into 1/4-inch- thick rounds. Halve, peel, and thinly slice the onion. Peel and roughly chop 2 cloves of garlic. Pit and roughly chop the dates. Quarter and deseed the lemon. ROAST THE POTATOES Place the potato rounds on a sheet pan. Drizzle with 2 teaspoons of olive oil and season with salt and pepper; toss to coat. Arrange in an even layer. Roast 18 to 20 minutes, or until lightly browned and tender when pierced with a fork. Transfer to a large bowl. PICKLE THE ONION Meanwhile, in a small pot, combine the sliced onion, honey (kneading the packet before opening), vinegar, and 1/4 cup of water; season with salt and pepper. Heat to boiling on high. Once boiling, cook, stirring occasionally, 1 to 2 minutes, or until combined and the onion is coated. Turn off heat. Set aside to cool at least 10 minutes. Taste, then season with salt and pepper if desired. COAT & START THE FISH Meanwhile, on a large plate, combine the flour and spice

64 WINTER 2022

1 Tbsp. sherry vinegar 1 Tbsp. honey 1 Tbsp. smoky spice blend 1 red onion 1 lemon 1/4 cup rice flour 2 Tbsp. sliced roasted almonds

blend. Pat the fish dry with paper towels. Season with salt and pepper on both sides. Working one piece at a time, thoroughly coat the seasoned fish in the seasoned flour (tapping off any excess flour). In a medium pan (nonstick, if you have one), heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil on mediumhigh until hot. Add the coated fish. Cook 2 to 3 minutes, or until browned. MAKE THE SAUCE & FINISH THE FISH Flip the fish. Add the butter, chopped garlic, chopped dates and 1/4 cup of water (carefully, as the liquid may splatter); season with salt and pepper. Cook, occasionally spooning the sauce over the fish, 2 to 4 minutes, or until the fish is coated and cooked through. Turn off the heat. Evenly top with the juice of 2 lemon wedges. Taste, then season with salt and pepper if desired. MAKE THE SALAD AND SERVE THE FISH Reserving 2 tablespoons of the onion pickling liquid, drain the pickled onion. To the bowl of roasted potatoes, add the arugula, reserved pickling liquid, the juice of the remaining lemon wedges, a drizzle of olive oil, and as much of the pickled onion as you’d like. Toss to combine. Taste, then season with salt and pepper if desired. Serve the cooked fish and sauce with the salad. Garnish the salad with the almonds. Enjoy!

Spicy Chicken Sausage Stuffed Peppers with Pepper Jack Courtesy of EveryPlate 2 SERVINGS | 35-40 MINS INGREDIENTS 2 bell peppers 3 garlic cloves 1 chili pepper 1/3 cup Israeli couscous PREPARE INGREDIENTS Preheat oven to 425°F. Wash and dry all produce. Halve bell peppers lengthwise; remove stem and seeds. Peel and finely chop garlic. Finely chop chili (if you’ve got sensitive skin, wear gloves for this part). PRE-BAKE PEPPERS Place bell peppers cut sides up on a baking sheet and drizzle each half with olive oil; rub to evenly coat. Season with salt and pepper. Bake until bell peppers are softened and beginning to brown, about 20 minutes.

BROWN SAUSAGE Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add sausage and garlic and cook, breaking up meat into pieces, until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes. Add tomato paste and couscous and and stir to coat. PREPARE STUFFING Add 2 cups water and a pinch of salt and pepper to pan with sausage mixture. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring often, until couscous is tender and mixture is thickened, 8-10 minutes. Stir in

1/3 Shredded pepper jack cheese 2 Tbsp. tomato paste 1/2 lb. chicken sausage as much of the chili as you’d like. (Start with a little, taste, and go up from there!) Taste and season with salt and pepper. ASSEMBLE PEPPERS Heat broiler to high. Carefully drain any liquid from bell peppers, if necessary. Stuff halves with half the filling and evenly top with cheese. Place back on baking sheet and broil until cheese is melted and beginning to brown, about 3 minutes. (Watch out for burning! The broiler is a powerful tool.) Divide remaining filling between plates and top with stuffed peppers.

One-Pan Prosciutto Gnocchi with Brussels Sprouts & Lemon from Blue Apron Courtesy of Blue Apron 2 SERVINGS | 20–30 MINS. INGREDIENTS 3 oz. prosciutto 1 lemon 2 Tbsp. butter

3/4 lb. gnocchi 1/2 lb. Brussels sprouts 1 Tbsp. honey

PREPARE THE INGREDIENTS Remove the honey from the refrigerator to bring to room temperature. Wash and dry the fresh produce. Stack the prosciutto (removing the plastic lining between the slices), then thinly slice crosswise. Cut off and discard the stem ends of the brussels sprouts; quarter lengthwise. Peel and roughly chop 2 cloves of garlic. Quarter and deseed the lemon. CRISP THE PROSCIUTTO In a large pan (nonstick, if you have one), heat a drizzle of olive oil on medium-high until hot. Add the sliced prosciutto. Cook, stirring frequently and breaking apart any clumps, 2 to 3 minutes,

1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

or until crispy. Leaving any browned bits (or fond) in the pan, transfer to a paper towellined plate. This recipe was designed for easier cleanup— no extra prep bowls needed! COOK THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS In the pan of reserved fond, heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil on medium-high until hot. Add the quartered brussels sprouts in an even layer. Cook, without stirring, 3 to 4 minutes, or until light browned. Add the chopped garlic and as much of the red pepper flakes as you’d like, depending on how spicy you’d like the dish to be. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, 1 to 2 minutes, or until softened.

FINISH & SERVE YOUR DISH To the pan, add the gnocchi and 1/3 cup of water (carefully, as the liquid may splatter). Cook, stirring occasionally, 2 to 3 minutes, or until the water has cooked off and the gnocchi are tender. Add the butter and honey (kneading the packet before opening); season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, 2 to 3 minutes, or until the butter is melted and combined. Turn off the heat. Carefully stir in the juice of 2 lemon wedges. Taste, then season with salt and pepper if desired. Serve the finished gnocchi topped with the crispy prosciutto and cheese. Serve the remaining lemon wedges on the side. Enjoy!
