A GOAL TO LOVE Dear Readers,

CUSTOM PUBLISHING . INTEGRATED MEDIA & MARKETING . CONSULTING
PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Hello 2014! Are we all officially immersed in this new year and the resolutions and great goals we have set for ourselves? Goals are a great thing to have. At the start of a new year or just every morning. “Today I will make it a great day!” That daily mantra for me is a goal I am having a pretty easy time reaching every day. 2013 was an amazing year both personally - I became a mother for the first time - and professionally – my company Robertson Media Group grew beyond my expectations and met goals well in advance with so much on the agenda for 2014 that we are all sprinting to keep up. But the pace that accompanies and follows success is one I accept, as does my entire team. After all, our goal – to produce a top quality publication all about this “Now at last they were wonderful place we call beginning Chapter September 29, 2012 home, is One of the Great Story not hard to want to do and the doing comes easier when you are doing which no one on earth something you love – doesn’t it? I’m so excited I am giddy has read: which goes on as a “bride” and so glad I get to work every day with some pretty amazing people; both in and out of the office!
forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.” ~ C.S. Lewis
Are you feeling romantic? If you were not when you picked up this issue, chances are you will when you finish. For the bride in all of us, we have a little bit of everything to help those of you planning that big day. Get some great tips, good advice and expert knowledge about the who, what, when, where and how of weddings. I mean, who doesn’t want to take advice on picking out a diamond straight from Tiffany & Co.? Yes, that’s what I thought… and speaking of diamonds…. Could be useful information for that special holiday we ALL get to celebrate coming up in February. For all of you love birds out there – read about some true romance right here in Williamson County; and gush at some of our bride to be models’ engagement stories. It isn’t often that a singular theme prevails throughout our issue, but in this case we thought – why not? After all February is National Heart Month – so we are just sticking to a truly heartfelt theme, right? We would like to welcome new monthly contributor Katie Jacobs as our Styling YOUR Every day expert as well as new staff members Charlie Kaser and Erica Lampley. Happy Valentine’s Day Williamson County – YOU know we love YOU! We hope that the weather doesn’t get too frightful and that your winter stays warm and delightful – enjoy. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s a great time to start thinking about those in your life who need to be reminded how much you love them. This year, think beyond the obvious boyfriend or spouse and be sure to do something lovey for your teenager, parents, friends, sister or babysitter. We did some research on the best gifts to give your loved ones this Valentine’s Day, and regardless who you are buying for, CoolSprings Galleria is your one-stop shopping spot for all the loves in your life. Among the top recommended gifts for women include jewelry, lingerie, skin care products, purses, a special date night and chocolate. Men prefer grooming products, cologne, a watch and tech gadgets, where teens love cell phone cases, fun pajamas, makeup and jewelry. Start your shopping at Pandora and either add a few charms to your loved one’s existing charm bracelet, or start one for them with themed charms ranging from a hobby or birthstone, to anything from their love-themed line of charms. James Avery is another great jewelry option for everyone on your list with items ranging from charms to bracelets and even jewelry for men. Pieces start as low as $18. If you are looking for something with a bit more bling, Kay Jewelers has an extensive line of birthstone, monogram signet and diamond rings. Whether it’s an enamel Hello Kitty ring you need for your little one or an anniversary band for your bride, Kay Jewelers has it all. Be sure to check out their line of men’s watches. With names like Movado and Bulova, there’s sure to be a style that will make your man swoon. Your next stop should be Victoria’s Secret. Whether it’s Pink pajamas for your teen or something spicier for yourself, they have a wide range of gift options available. Check out their signature line of fragrances, skincare and Pretty in Pink scrubs, body mist, lip gloss and nail enamel. January is also Victoria’s Secrets big semi-annual sale month, so take advantage of prices up to 70% off on everything from lingerie to lotion. Bath & Body Works is another great stop for Valentine’s Day gifts for everyone from yourself to your child’s favorite teacher. Choose from lotions, candles, home fragrance oils, and a very popular item during flu season – scented hand sanitizer. These items start as low as $3 and Bath & Body Works is notorious for offering volume discounts if you buy multiples. The more you buy, the more you save! Bath & Body Works uses the month of January to offer half off and up to 75% off many items to bring those prices down even more. Last but certainly not least should be a fun date night. Buca di Beppo, Stoney River and J. Alexanders all offer a romantic setting, fabulous food and a great option for a special night. Although the holiday shopping frenzy is behind us, this is prime time for semi-annual sales at most of the larger retailers in addition to those mentioned here. Prices tend to be slashed up to 70% off as retailers look to clear their shelves to make room for spring and summer merchandise. Watch for a chance to win a $100 gift card to James Avery courtesy of James Avery at CoolSprings Galleria on our weekly eblasts and Facebook this month.
This year, spend more time with friends and family...

Happy New Year? Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence. – Aristotle Happy New Year! I hope everyone created magical holiday memories and has started 2014 with an abundance of things to be thankful for. I began the New Year by skipping the whole concept of “New Year’s resolutions;” for some reason it just felt taxing. When I thought about why I wanted to accomplish anything on my resolution list, I always ended up with the same reason: To Be Happy. I decided to focus my attention, instead, on what I needed to do to cultivate a sense of overall happiness. Stepping back and looking at my life from a macro viewpoint seemed to make more sense. Specific goals have merit, but they seemed like temporary repairs to cultivating lasting joy and happiness. What if I could make changes that would result in deep satisfaction in my day to day existence, instead of in just one area of my life? I decided to research the subject. Interestingly enough, there are things that happy people do differently on a regular basis. (Hint: they have nothing to do with losing weight, better paying jobs or possessions.) I gained so much insight around this topic that I wanted to share my findings. So, for the remainder of the year, I will be highlighting one “happy” habit in my column each month. Some of these habits you may already be doing, but I challenge you to start incorporating any that are missing in your life and notice if your happiness levels soar. Here is an over view of the mental diet that happy people consume: • They are mindful that their thoughts control their feelings. • They know their personal values and align their life with them. • They pursue their natural passions and talents. • They mind their own business. • They actively express gratitude and give back to others. • They are connected to a higher power and other people. • They accept reality if they can’t change a situation. • They stay in the present moment. • They are accepting and forgiving of their own and other’s faults.
Back or Neck Pain?
If you suffer from back pain or neck pain, you know these conditions can intefere with a normal lifestyle. But there’s good news! You don’t have to learn to live with it . . .
I look forward to delving into each of these topics in more detail throughout the coming year. As always, I welcome your comments and feedback. Connect with me on Facebook, facebook.com/ConnieHaleyLifeCoaching, or via my website, conniehaleylifecoaching.com. to comment on this topic, to sign up for my monthly newsletter or to schedule a no-cost coaching assessment call. STYLING YOUR EVERYDAY
KATIE JACOBS If you follow my blog, stylingmyeveryday.com, you know that I have a passion (some may call it an addiction) for sweets. From chocolate eclairs and French macaroons, to peppermint cheesecake and chocolate lava cakes, my holiday was full of baking and well, eating. The day after Christmas, I woke up tired, bloated, broken out, and sniffling with a cold I had been fighting for two weeks. My body was craving nutrients. Since then, I have been making healthy eating a priority. That doesn’t mean depriving myself of those sweets that I love (I truly believe everything is ok in moderation), but it does mean working hard to incorporate more nutrients, especially from vegetables, into my daily diet.
A Superfood to Revitalize Your Diet
KALE
To make it easier, I’ve created a few simple, fresh and healthy recipes that all include one of my very favorite superfoods: KALE. It is an incredible vegetable, full of iron, calcium, vitamins A, K and C, antioxidants and fiber. It is also a great antiinflammatory (full of omega-3 fatty acids) and lowers cholesterol levels. Kale is a versatile and inexpensive vegetable that has suddenly taken the spotlight as foodies and chefs all around the globe hail its health benefits. So whether you are trying kale for the first time or are soon to be inundated with bags of the stuff from your local CSA, you’ll have a few go-to recipes that are a delicious, and healthy, way to start your new year.
Katie’s Healthy Green Smoothie While kale is the main power-player in this green smoothie, the other ingredients pack quite a nutritional punch, as well. Frozen mango chunks bring sweetness and are rich in minerals, antioxidants, vitamins, fiber and digestive enzymes. I’ve thrown in a frozen banana (potassium and vitamin B6) and half a fresh orange (vitamin C and citrus limonoids) for even more tasty fruit flavor. Flax seeds, full of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, lignans and fiber, and probiotic coconut water, which contains more potassium than four bananas, help regulate proper intestinal function and digestion. Lastly, almond milk makes the smoothie rich but also adds vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, iron, fiber, zinc and calcium (and is much lower in fat and calories than cows’ milk). Ingredients: 1 cup chopped frozen kale 1/2 cup frozen mango 1 frozen banana 1/2 fresh orange (peeled) 1 Tablespoon ground flax seed 1 cup probiotic coconut water 1 cup almond milk Directions: Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Serve immediately. Serves one.

Spicy Sausage, Kale, & Whole Wheat Tortellini Soup Cold winter nights call for comfort foods, which don’t have to be unhealthy. Directions: Heat a large pot over medium-low heat and add the olive oil. Add the onion with the salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and stir. Cook until onions soften, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add in the mushrooms, garlic, sage, bay leaf and sage and cook for 3 more minutes, then add the chicken stock, increase the heat to mediumhigh and bring the liquid to a boil. When the stock is boiling, add the pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, just until it’s al dente. Add the kale and stir well, cooking for 2 more minutes. Stir in the cheese, then taste and season with more salt and pepper if desired. You can add all of the sausage into the soup or serve the soup into bowls and add the sausage on top per serving. Remove bay leaf and serve with extra cheese for grating. Make sure to turn the heat off underneath the soup to prevent the noodles and kale from getting soggy.

YOUR HEALTH & WELLNESS
WILLIAMSON MEDICAL CENTER
Subtle Changes in Diet and Lifestyle Can Save Your Life
Teresa White, M.D. Board-certified pediatrician Tennessee Pediatrics
As we stare down the barrel of a brand new year, it’s a perfect time to examine the lifestyle and eating habits of both you and your children. In today’s society, we don’t think twice about a $300 handbag or a $50,000 Mercedes, but we won’t spend money on good quality food to nourish our bodies. Food is medicine, and it is most helpful to change our focus a little bit. Too many people’s eating habits look more like they are filling a hole, than nourishing their bodies. And as parents, we need to realize our kids notice our eating habits. We need to teach them that food is important.
I just finished a two-year fellowship on integrative medicine, which focuses on a wellness-based approach to your health. The fact that 75 percent of chronic diseases in the U.S. are related to diet and lifestyle was very eye-opening to me. So, I am very proactive with the children I see in my practice. I look at the whole child, their family, their lifestyle and not just what they eat, but how they are eating. Do they watch TV, while they eat or do they eat around a dinner table with their family? Those things have to be factored into caring for a child. Unfortunately, with so many parents working and juggling hectic schedules, the first thing to go is all too often healthy eating. But we can’t sacrifice our health for convenience. This is why diseases like obesity, diabetes, depression and auto-immune diseases are so prevalent today – even in children. I try to tell parents that we need to try to eat like our great-grandparents did. They ate whole food. My grandmother was a schoolteacher, but every meal she made was a meat and three vegetables. Not meat and macaroni and cheese made from orange powder. They didn’t eat processed food that is full of things like high fructose corn syrup. We need to work on getting that out of our diets. We need to get the artificial colors and flavors out. It can be hard and even seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Below are just a few small changes you can make that will have a huge impact on your child’s health. It can all start by simply reading labels to look for some of the big red flag items. Kill the high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup shows up in places you might expect, like junk food, but it’s also in places you might not think, like bread. It’s everywhere, and it’s a marker for poor-quality food. Eat more fiber. The second-most important thing you can do for you and your child is make sure you get enough fiber. I tell moms to shoot for 20 grams of fiber every day. That seems like a lot, but it will help a lot. It will fill your child up faster, so they eat less. They feel full longer. Sugar. The number-one culprit with children and sugar is what they are drinking. Sodas, Capri Suns and even Gatorade are loaded with highly processed sugar and have absolutely zero nutritional value. If your child drinks one sugary drink a day, that can add up to 10 pounds of weight each year. I recommend just switching to water. Limit processed food. Parents ask me why kids aren’t as healthy as they used to be, and it is absolutely the sheer number of processed foods we are feeding them. The best way to begin to learn what is
processed is to read the label. If you see high fructose corn syrup or anything that is partially hydrogenated, that’s a sign of poor quality food. If it has an ingredient that you can’t pronounce, you generally don’t want it. Smart choices. It starts when your child is a toddler. Parents say they can’t get their child to eat vegetables. But I tell the parents that if you offer your 2-year-old French fries and broccoli, they are going to pick French fries every time. But if you offer them broccoli and carrots, they might pick carrots. Be diligent. Your toddler will eat what your family eats, if you will stop being a short order cook. Toddlers might only eat one good meal a day, but they should be eating healthy things, when they do eat. If you are feeding them healthy things, they aren’t going to go hungry. Focus. The key to promoting healthy eating in your child is to first open your eyes and pay attention to what you are feeding them. Read labels. Research what some of these mystery ingredients really are. Then begin to clean up their diet. Get the sugar out and increase the fiber. Eat with your family. If we can start there, that will snowball! Teresa White, M.D., is a board-certified pediatrician with Tennessee Pediatrics in Thompson’s Station and is a credentialed physician with Williamson Medical Center.
TOP WAYS TO CLEAN UP YOU AND YOUR CHILD’S DIET: 1. ELIMINATE FOODS WITH HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP 2. EAT MORE FIBER (FRUITS & VEGETABLES) 3. REDUCE SUGAR INTAKE 4. LIMIT PROCESSED FOODS 5. MAKE SMART CHOICES 6. READ LABELS AND LEARN WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE

Dickens of a Christmas Story & Photography by K York Dickens of a Christmas has become a holiday tradition in downtown Franklin, and the festival celebrated its 29th year in 2013. Crowds strolled along Main Street and traveled back in time to the days of Charles Dickens. Characters from Dickens’ stories were among the crowd, along with other street performers and period vendors. Dickens of a Christmas is the most wonderful way for the family to get into the spirit of the holiday season!

Love Stories
Will Canterbury & Tali Giles Written by Will Canterbury Photography by Brooke Kelly Photography
Tali and I have a special love. We honestly never fight and support each other in all that we do. It’s amazing the balance and peace that we bring to the other. I’m laid back, and she is very on point most of the time. The best way I can put it is that we just fit. Our road started out rocky, but through it all, I was able to see that Tali was different and really cared about me and loved me. God forged us through difficult and strange times but as purged by fire, the impurities burned away and left us with the strong bond we have. When I decided to ask Tali to marry me, I started looking for rings. After looking at several and picking bits and pieces of each that I liked or didn’t like, the jeweler I was working with said he would design her ring. We sat down and drew some ideas out on a napkin at first. By the time I received it, I was amazed. Since we both love music, I had two treble clefs designed that are interwoven on each side. The first letters of our names is what holds the diamond setting and to finish it off, a Georgia Bulldogs “G” was placed on the under side of the band because Tali is a HUGE Dawgs fan.
28 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM Winter 2014
Once the ring was finished, I had an idea for my proposal. I decided to have a caricature artist staged downtown Franklin the night of the proposal. I arranged for us to eat at 55 South with my sister and brother-in-law. After dinner, we walked out to go to Sweet Cici’s, and the artist was set up. I coaxed Tali into sitting down, and the artists and I began to talk, as if we had never met. When he finished he turned the picture around to show a caricature of me handing Tali an engagement ring. She looked at it puzzled and then looked at me, just as I was pulling the real ring from my pocket. She was so surprised that her first response was “Are you serious?” Thankfully, her next response, when I asked her to marry me, was “Yes!” We will be married on April 26th at the Loveless Barn.
Josh & Jessica Helton Written by Jessica Helton
I was 15 years old when I transferred into Independence for my two remaining years of high school. Being the “new kid” for the first time in my life made me feel timid and uncertain, but Josh’s memories of my arrival are a little different -- he swears that his awe and intimidation of the new girl he’d deemed “unreachable” is what kept us from ever becoming friends as teenagers. Although we brushed past each other in the hallways of high school without ever saying a word, I was well aware of his reputation for being a good-hearted prankster. When he hitchhiked across the country for charity in college, I silently followed his adventure over social media and wasn’t surprised that he was growing into a man whose life was wild but purposeful. After graduating college, I joined a program called The World Race and set off to spend the next 11 months backpacking across 11 countries as a full-time missionary. This time it was Josh who began following my journey from afar. I was living in a tiny home in the mountains of Nepal when he finally broke our past 7 years of silence from his camper in the backwoods of Tennessee. He wrote to me how inspired he’d been seeing my photos and updates as I’d lived in poverty the past 6 months, and I confessed I’d had the same feelings reading his hitchhiking journeys years prior. It wasn’t long before we started sharing our hearts and discovering our similar passions with each other through writing.
Over the next few months the full days of ministry couldn’t keep me from staying up all night for a chance to learn more and more about this remarkable man. When my internet was strong enough, we’d Skype as I squatted on a toilet or in a tent in the dark, trying not to wake my sleeping team members. We fell in love as I continued my journey from Asia to Africa, and Josh’s parents were perplexed when their untamable wild child told them he’d met the girl he was going to make his wife... and that she was living across the world. I ended my journey through the nations a little early, trading my time in Europe for the chance to have coffee with Josh Helton. I’ll never forget those first moments together picnicking in the back of his pickup truck on a spring night. What a strange and wonderful feeling it was to already know the depths of his heart, but not the curl of his lip when he smiled. We spent those spring months falling in love with the real life versions of each other, and only 8 months after our first typed “hello,” we were married. Watch Josh’s crazy proposal here on the web at: vimeo.com/69845456.
Fred & Anna Van Dusen
Written by Anna Van Dusen
Fred and I met in the summer of 1973, after I answered an ad for a “Mother’s Helper” (nanny) from an office in Stamford, Connecticut. I had just graduated from Morehead State University and wanted to do something different before I would begin a career as a schoolteacher. I was selected to be a nanny for a grandmother who was helping to raise her son’s three children. He was divorced and had custody of his two sons, ages12 and 11 and his daughter aged 7. The family was very welcoming and so kind to me. Fred was fascinated, I think by, a Kentucky girl who hadn’t been to NYC, and so he took it upon himself to show me the city. There were many times when it was just the two of us together. It wasn’t long before we realized were heading into something serious. He
began to allude to “us” being together toward the end of the summer and possibly me staying in Connecticut. This was a little too fast for me! My sister had found me a job teaching in northern Kentucky, so at the end of summer, I headed home. Fred and I began to have phone conversations, and I think it was on the phone that he proposed. He visited my family that fall. My parents were skeptical of this budding relationship, but Fred won everyone over, as he has always done me. His gift to my Mother, when he came to visit, was a small sterling silver watering can filled with silk flowers from Cartier. He’s always had great taste in gifts and still does!

Our wedding was in June of 1974 in my little Methodist church in Kentucky. My pastor there at the time was Howard Olds who later became the pastor of Brentwood United Methodist Church. Our first few years were not easy. It was not the “sound of music “. There was a time when I thought it was too hard, and I wanted to go home. However, Fred began to go to church and became a devoted husband and a wonderful father. We sold our Connecticut home in 2006 and moved to Franklin in January 2007. Our children, Beth Braden and Scott Van Dusen, attended Vanderbilt University, so we had visited this area many times. Both Beth and Scott married Tennesseans, and we are very blessed to have both of their families living in Franklin. When Fred and I moved here, we had one grand child. Now we have six! Fred and I will be married 40 years in June of 2014, and it would not have been sustainable without our faith in Christ. My husband has always loved me well and that only inspires me to love him back with the same loyalty and devotion he has shown me for so long.

The weather outside is still cold and dreary and many a mind is already wandering to spring…. Or in my case… the beach. Not too terribly far around the corner is spring break and hundreds, probably thousands of Williamson County and middle Tennesseans will flock in droves to the Gulf Coast. Options in accommodations abound in the areas that make up Panama City, Destin and everything in between, but I was lucky enough to discover a gem of a home away from home thanks to my dear friends Jamey and Jennifer Parker. Their home away from home, aptly named “Sea Haven” is located in Watercolor on 30 A and truly is a one of a kind vacation rental. Last fall we made our escape to this haven of a home and enjoyed not only luxury accommodations but also all there is to do and see in the quaint neighborhoods of Watercolor, Seaside and 30 A. Sea Haven is brand new and one of the most luxurious homes in all of Watercolor. This home is the essence of the perfect location, the rarity of expansive private outdoor living space, with a saltwater pool, spa and outdoor kitchen. The four porches and balconies, with wonderful privacy that is unique in Watercolor, add to the allure and popularity of this exquisite home. This home is surrounded by open space, a boardwalk to a private
park, and just minutes to the beach club, restaurants, boathouse, shops and Watercolor pools. Along with the five bedrooms, the outdoor kitchen and dining areas, the expansive porches and privacy make this home the perfect luxurious getaway for the entire family. We enjoyed cooking in the chef’s dream kitchen and playing games and enjoying meals for our large group around the extra large dining table. Already experiencing cooler temps when we were there in October, the outdoor living space was made even more enjoyable by the saltwater heated pool and hot tub. The beach and beach club pool at the Watercolor Inn were within walking distance but bikes on site or a golf cart easily available for rent while on vacation, also provided transportation to the seaside with all of our proverbial “stuff!” The best of everything you could possibly need or think of awaited us within the house. Bedding, towels and toiletries, cooking supplies, rafts and even games and toys for the children on hand. Including a pack and play and safety gate! There really isn’t much the Parkers have forgotten when outfitting Sea Haven for their guests. The house is perfect for a group of couples, a girl’s trip or even as accommodations for wedding parties, families, reunions or multiple families vacationing on spring break or in the summer.

FRIDRICH & CLARK
WILLIAMSON COUNTY REAL ESTATE If You Thought 2013 Was Strong in Real Estate,
JUST WAIT TILL YOU SEE Having completed one of the strongest real estate years in history, Williamson County enters 2014 with an even stronger message, more homes under construction, and a national appeal that makes it one of the strongest markets in the U.S. What’s the forecast for the coming months? And just as important, what makes this forecast so realistic? According to a quintet of experienced and successful realtors with Fridrich & Clark Realty, who provided a look at this exceptional county, the reasons are clear and rooted in the unique character of this community. First, how strong was 2013? Price Lechleiter, who just completed his one-year term as President of the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors and is one of Fridrich & Clark Realty’s leading realtors, said the statistics show that 2013 was a big year. “The latest report indicates that 2013 home sales were up more than 20% compared to 2012 in Williamson County. The average sales price was about $373,000, and inventory is shrinking. There’s new construction underway and that will continue to increase in 2014. The demand is clearly here.” So what are the elements that make this kind of performance happen so regularly in our communities? “I’ve worked in real estate for 26 years and this county has a special appeal,” says realtor Marty Warren. “Newcomers seeking the idyllic place to live in the Greater Nashville area typically place Williamson County at the top of their list.” There aren’t too many people who know Williamson County as well as Molly Edmondson, and her reason for Williamson County’s success is simple. “We have a real sense of community. Combine that with the standard of living and an attractive tax structure and you see why this county is so very inviting.”

Sean Simons’s list is familiar and compelling. “Nationally ranked public schools, proximity to Nashville, low property taxes, numerous sports fields and complexes, parks, land conservation, and the charm of Historic Downtown Franklin.” Nancy Tice really relishes the area’s history. “You sense a feeling of respect for the important history associated with Williamson County as well as pride to maintain it as a special place to live.” All of the realtors speak to the county’s variety of communities, as a real source of appeal, providing homebuyers with numerous options that fit lifestyle, budget and location. According to Tice, Franklin continues to boom, from the fabulous older homes or new brownstones and condos near the historic Square to the outskirts with lovely homes ranging in age, price and size. She also notes booming markets for young buyers throughout the county. “New subdivisions with affordable prices, especially attracting first time home buyers, are quite popular, and these are popping up from Nolensville to Thompson Station to Fairview.” Edmondson speaks to the power of the county’s communities. “Many new residents enjoy contained communities such as Fieldstone Farms, McKays Mill and Westhaven, as well as gated communities such as Governors Club for its social venue with optional clubhouse and golf course membership.” Simons points to growth in new areas. “New construction continues to bring new buyers into the area with planned mix use neighborhoods near the I-65 corridor. Locations like Berry Farms and Ladd Park provide homeowners with easier commutes to Cool Springs and Nashville with their close proximity to the interstate. These communities have also incorporated sidewalks, community pools, and community parks into their master plans.” Even the longstanding and oldest communities remain desirable. Tice noted, “Older, established Brentwood neighborhoods such as Brenthaven, Carondolet, Wildwood, River Oaks are being purchased at affordable prices and renovated accordingly. Truthfully, the whole county has desirable communities.” Lechleiter acknowledged that this growth brings challenges, like managing increased traffic, providing affordable housing options and balancing commercial and residential growth. But he’s confident the county will deal with these. “Williamson County will continue to be a leader in the state for home sales and economic growth. The great quality of life, low property taxes and good schools will continue to attract businesses and families from across the country.” Warren sums it up with a look to the sky. “Picturesque rolling hills, beautiful neighborhoods of lovely homes, excellent public schools, and a wonderful sense of community. All of the stars align with our great county.”
Molly Edmondson, Price Lechleiter, Sean Simons, Nancy Tice and Marty Warren are realtors with Fridrich & Clark Realty, focused on the Williamson County market.

She says, “I have always had a passion for my community and especially for being a role model for children,” and this desire serves her well in her role there as Board Vice President Chair of MFH’s largest fundraiser annually the Mardi Gras Ball. Her connection with this organization is simple in her mind; trying to be a leader and example for each one of the boys that the organization serves. “I want to teach the boys that there are opportunities to rise above their current conditions to be the future leaders of our community,” she conveys. “My Friend’s House is very important to the Williamson County and Middle Tennessee communities because we are the only organization of our kind,” she adds. My Friend’s House began its work on behalf of at-risk youth in 1982. As a nonprofit community-based organization, we have sought to meet the service/support needs of the youth of Williamson County communities and referrals from Middle Tennessee. The focus is helping youth change negative behaviors, learn to make good choices and provide opportunities to grow and develop into responsible young adults. My Friend’s House and its Evening Diversion Program serve youth in DCS custody in need of a stable/supportive short-term home-like environment, as well as private family referrals in need of respite, community-based A&D education and family assistance. As a Business Banker for a locally owned and operated bank, Courtney felt the responsibility to support other businesses and organizations that share the same vision of growing the community from within. “Local community involvement helps to form the bonds of the county to build a close knit community by helping each other with the same goal in mind of growing from within our local area,” she believes. She encourage strong community involvement and setting good examples, as positive role models to the youth in our community by local business leaders and encourages anyone who has a heart for and interest in my Friends House to visit their website at www.myfriendshousetn.org . She says, “We are constantly looking for great role models, churches, and businesses in the Williamson County community that want to volunteer, be the “Chef of the House” by teaching the boys how to cook a meal and enjoying the meal they cook together, maintenance work on the property and monetary donations.” This is an organization where just a little time and attention can go a long way in a child’s life, and anyone who wants to give is welcome at this house!

FROM OUR TABLE TO YOURS
CHEF GEORGE
“Well Mom, it happened last night. He asked me to marry him, and I said ‘yes’. There’s so much to do...we’re gonna need help!” Help has arrived. As an experienced caterer, we meet with newly engaged couples that have so many questions. After sharing our experiences and giving the couple an opportunity to taste our food, we usually can plan their menu and decide what would make their memorable day complete within a few minutes. The first thing we do is let them know that this is their special day and they will only do this one time. We do this many times a year and want to make it as completely stress-free and memorable for them, as possible. The second thing we advise a couple to do is to find a caterer they feel totally comfortable with, one that is not a typical cookie-cutter with set menus. We provide custom catering possibilities from “tie dye to bow tie.” Then, we must ask the couple questions that they have not even considered to determine what we can do to make that happen. Here are some questions you should consider when meeting with a caterer: • Do you have you a budget in mind? You will find that most caterers charge by the guest for their services. There can be many variables to determine what that per guest fee will be and you need to discuss at length what services you are paying for. • What do you anticipate as your RSVP guest count? A good way to go about this math problem is to take the number of guests you have invited and calculate that 60% of that number will reply with a “yes.” • Are there any family recipes you would like to incorporate into your menu? There have been many times we have been asked to prepare one of grandma’s favorites that a bride has fond childhood memories of and wants her guests to enjoy as a menu item. • Do you want to have an action station? Action stations are a good way to offer specially prepared foods such as chef-carved meats, pasta stations, mashed potato bar, etc. They help disperse guests around the room allowing faster self-service. • Do you want an ice carving as a focal point in the room or as a centerpiece for the buffet? We like to say that an ice carving turns a “party” into a “PARTAY.” • Do you need an appetizer hour to accommodate your guests? Your guests may need a little something, while waiting on the wedding party to travel from one location to another or giving the photographer time to get those photos taken. Awesome Catering “By George” would be delighted to provide you with our services. We specialize in both your visual and flavor senses. You may reach us at 615-504-3175 to help with planning your wedding needs. You can visit us for lunch at our restaurant City Café East at 1455 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN at 615-742-8900 the way cooking should be.

YOUR EFFORTLESS STYLE
KATIE RUSHTON
YOUR EFFORTLESS STYLE: HERE COMES THE GUEST...WHAT TO WEAR TO A WEDDING
Wish Collection Aztec Block Print Dress, Moxie Petites $75
Since this is the Bridal Issue, I found it only fitting to write a piece on what to wear to a wedding. Spring is quickly approaching, which means wedding season is just around the corner. As soon as those invitations come in the mail, there’s excitement for the bride and groom, and then there’s hesitation as we think to ourselves “what I am going to wear?” Before we get to the ideas on what to wear, let’s start with a few wedding attire don’ts.
• DON’T WEAR WHITE (OR SHADES OF IVORY). White is for the bride and the bride only on her wedding day.
• DON’T SHOW UP UNDERDRESSED. Pay attention to the dress code, and even if it’s a casual wedding, always wear a dress, skirt or suit. If the dress code isn’t mentioned on the invite, dress for the venue, or make sure to ask the bride or groom for direction.
• DON’T WEAR ANYTHING TOO FLASHY OR THAT SHOWS TOO MUCH SKIN. Now on to the “do’s.” Do you have more than one wedding to attend over the next couple of months? If so, investing in a great little black dress that you can wear more than once is the way to go. A black dress is so versatile, as you can style it different ways for each wedding you have to attend.
Is the wedding you are attending in the city? Most weddings in the city are often trendy events, so wear your little black dress with a statement necklace and a bold heel. Don’t be afraid to go with a printed dress or a fun bold color. This type of dress would be great for a destination wedding or a backyard wedding. Both of these types of weddings usually hint at a more relaxed vibe, and fun prints and bold colors go hand in hand with a more relaxed atmosphere. For more fun ideas, make sure and stop by my blog effortlesstyle.com, and don’t forget I offer a variety of styling and personal shopping services. If you need help this season, give me a call, and let’s schedule a wardrobe consultation. Your Personal Fashion Expert,

YOUR WINE GUY
JIMBO ELMERICK
Love
by Julie Jorgensen and Jimbo Elmerick
IS IN THE AIR
Congratulations and best wishes to all the ‘brides to be” out there! As you set out to plan for the perfect wedding day, don’t let the seemingly-ominous task of choosing libations make you nervous. This is one of the fun things on your wedding to-do list. Jimbo the Wine Guy has made things simple to understand and will leave your guests raising their glasses until its time to go home. Let’s get to it! Although sparkling wine is a wedding fixture, consider also serving one red and one white “still” wine if the reception includes a meal or hors d’oeuvres. I suggest serving equal amounts of red and white wine, if only so you don’t disappoint half the crowd. Keep in mind that not all sparkling wine is champagne. I find most champagne (sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France) to be over-priced and underflavored. Let’s go all wine geek for a few minutes with the scoop on sweetness categorizations for sparkling wines. Brut Naturale / Extra Brut
56 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM Winter 2014
/ Brut Zero: Bone dry, seriously austere. Serve with oysters or caviar. Brut: Dry. This style is what you’ll most often see in wine shops and restaurants. It’s more versatile. Extra Dry / Extra See: Medium dry. Confused? You should be. Don’t worry because you won’t see this often in the U.S. See / Dry: Medium Sweet. More confusion? Again, you won’t see much of this in the U.S. Demi-See: Sweet. However, due to the high levels of acidity found in sparkling wine, this sweetness is never syrupy, but rather delicate and almost ethereal in nature. The Italians pour Prosecco from the Veneto region as a welcoming beverage. It’s the cultural equivalent of champagne but made from different grapes and in a slightly different way. It is refreshingly evanescent, ideal for most hors d’oeuvres and far less expensive than true French champagne. Zonin, Astoria, and Zardetto are all reliable producers. The same goes for Spanish sparkling Cava. Good Cavas from Cordorniou, Segura Vuidas, and Freixenet are easy to find. Look for the “French Connection” sparkling wines from California. They are wineries that have connections to major champagne houses in France but make wines more suited to American taste. Some of these include: Domaine Chandon, Domaine Carneros, Mumm Napa Cuvee, and Roederer Estate. How much to buy? It’s better to have enough than run out. We’ve all been to at least one wedding reception that ran out of wine, which means we have all left a wedding reception earlier than
planned. Return the unopened bottles or give them to your outof-town guests as a thank you for traveling to be a part of your celebration. The standard 750 ml bottle holds 25 ounces, so count on five servings of five ounce glasses of wine from each bottle. For sparkling wines served in flutes, allow for four ounces per serving, plus foam, which equals six servings per bottle. Count on each guest consuming one half bottle of wine – roughly two glasses – every two hours. If the party lasts four hours, count on one 25-ounce bottle per person. These calculations allow for the fact that some folks will drink more, some less, and some not at all. One bottle each may seem like a lot of wine, but some attendees will want to sample everything, even though they do not drain their glasses. Half of your wine may sit on the tables in half-empty glasses, which is okay just for this one occasion. Now let’s dish some advice on purchasing wine, as it relates to your reception location. Local and state laws, and individual wedding venue policies, determine whether couples can bring their own wine or if they must choose from the venue’s wine selection or that of the hired caterer. Always ask about options and restrictions before booking a wedding site and/ or hiring a caterer. A hotel, for example, may not allow couples to bring their own wine, yet its banquet wine list could be uninteresting or overly expensive. Many caterers have reseller licenses and can purchase the wine for the couple; those who do not have a license require that clients purchase the wine themselves, though a competent caterer will make suggestions and help match the wine with the meal. Buying wine by the case can save you money. You usually get a 10-
20% discount. Consider the season. Brisk white wines, dry rosés, and light to mediumbodied red are ideal for warm weather weddings because they offer more refreshment. Choice whites include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris , Pinot Grigio, un-oaked Chardonnay, Riesling, and sparkling wines. Medium bodied reds include Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, Italian Valpolicella, Spanish Rioja, and Rhone Valley Côtes du Rhône. For winter and fall weddings, wines with more weight and power (Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Shiraz, Malbec, and Zinfandel) pair best with chilly temperatures and comfort foods. What time will the reception take place? According to wedding planners, guests tend to drink less wine, and lighter wines, in daytime versus evening. Buy chilled white wines, rosés, and lighter reds if you are expecting a sunny afternoon. In the evening, temperatures drop. If you are having a sit-down dinner and want guests to linger, caterers suggest budgeting for more red wine than you would for the day. Can one wine really make everyone happy? All above considered, the Jimbo-genius play is a sparkling pink wine. This is the one wine to do it all. No winery, distributor, or liquor store or paid reviewer would ever send you this route, but we are not talking about your average wine dude. White wine drinkers will secretly love it. Grandma will love it, if it is not too dry. Red wine drinkers will tolerate it. Sparkling rosé (pink) wine pairs well with hors d’oeuvres , cheese, fruit and CAKE! It always tastes delish and light; you can drink it day or night. You will like it on a boat; you can drink it with a goat. We could go on and on, but we aren’t the best of poets, obviously. The final bonus is that sparkling pink wine can be used for toasting and looks gorgeous in flute glasses! Jimbo’s picks are Emeiri Sparkling Pink Moscato by De Bortoli from Australia or Caposaldo Sweet Pink Merlot Moscato from Veneto in Italy. Neither is too sweet for experienced wine drinkers because they are similar in style to most Italian Moscato d’Asti. They are beautiful to look at and full of fresh strawberry, cherry and raspberry flavors. Now, let’s shift gears a bit and talk about wine for Valentine’s day. Romantically speaking, it is hard to do better than choose a wine that has some nostalgic value for you as a couple. Examples may include the wine that you drank on your first date, before or after your first kiss, during your first Christmas together, etc. There are a lot of newgeneration California red wine blends with flirty names. Some names to drop at the wine shop are Besitos (translates to “little kisses” ), Red Velvet, Troublemaker, Primal Roots, Maximus, Sexy Wine Bomb, and Fourplay. Here is Jimbo’s secret weapon – run, don’t walk to get a bottle of Banfi Rosa Regale Brachetto d’Acqui: a sparkling red wine, off-dry with intense raspberry flavor. Legend has it that Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony both presented Cleopatra with several gourds of Brachetto as a gift. The femme fatale believed that the wine had the power to unleash the passions of her lovers. It is one of the world’s only wines that pairs really well with chocolate. Just don’t wait until Valentine’s day to go to the store. It will all be gone. Kisses and hugs, brides and Valentines – Here’s to you! - Jimbo and Julie

HOSPITABLE YOU
SOUTHERN SOIREE
Here Comes the
Bride!
Photography by Jessie Holloway Photography
Happy New Year! January is such a fun month to be a bride. The holidays are over, and now the full focus can be planning every detail of your upcoming big day. Don’t hyperventilate just yet! You still have plenty of time and lots of great vendors to help you along the way. Here is a list of the ones you should check off the list first.
A Wedding Planner A great place to start is to seek out someone to work with you
along the way, a personal assistant of sorts to find vendors, schedule appointments, keep up with the budget, help with design and inspiration, etc., etc. Where do you find this magical wedding guru?? Why, with us, of course! Southern Soiree consists of a wedding planner and design team that can take care of every detail or simply be a source of guidance, from your engagement until the getaway. A wedding planner initially may seem to be a frivolous addition to the already tight budget. However, working with the right one can make your experience, as a fiancé and bride, much more pleasant and relaxing. There are some great options (ah-hem) right here in Williamson County. Think about it!
A Photographer Photography has grown into such a huge part of the day. Gone are
the stuffy days of posed family group shots. Photographers are finally allowed to be creative and take on more of a photo journalism role. With that being said, the good ones will book up quickly. Take some time to look at blogs and websites to see who’s style you like the best. Meet with a few, and see whom you click with (no pun intended). Your photographs are how you will remember your day, so don’t be afraid to sink a chunk of the budget here. There’s no point in investing time and money into your décor, if there are aren’t any good pictures to capture it.
58 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM Winter 2014
A Band or DJ If you’ve got a fun-loving guest list that is looking for a good time, the
entertainment will be a major factor. As with the photographer, the band or DJ can only do one event per night, so it’s important to put this vendor at the top of the list. We’ve found the best way to “interview” your options is to go hear them perform live. The videos on the website hardly do justice to seeing them in person and watching how they interact with the guests. As far as the band versus DJ dilemma, it’s about your budget priorities and what type of vibe you’re looking for. A DJ is less money and can be more versatile, but a band provides a live entertainment factor. This is where working with a planner comes in handy. They have insight on who can bring the party and who should have stayed at home.
Catering Your food and alcohol are usually the largest budget consumers, so be
thoughtful when selecting your caterer. Decide what style of food you are looking for- sit-down dinner versus buffet or heavy hors d’oeuvres. Are you looking for quality of food or presentation? Talk to other brides, and go to open houses. Tastings are great, but remember that when they are serving to guests, it is in bulk. This means that the steak that tasted great when cooked just for you, may be sitting in a hot box for an hour on the actual day-of. Most caterers are flexible and will make a custom menu just for you, so have fun and don’t be afraid to serve something unique that reflects your personal taste. Once you get these major vendors nailed down, it’s amazing how at ease you will be, and the others will fall into place. A fun and no-pressure way to meet some of your options is at a bridal show. Check out “Here Comes the Bride” at the Factory in Franklin on February 9th. Have fun mingling, tasting food & dessert, and getting some great inspiration.
Cheers to all of the 2014 brides out there!

YOUR BEAUTY & STYLE
CONFESSIONS OF A BEAUTY JUNKIE
YAY! He popped the question and you, being the smart gal that you are, said “yes.” Look at that gorgeous ring! Now the fun starts: parties, gifts, planning - being engaged and planning the wedding of your dreams is one of the most magical times in a girl’s life. Savor every moment of it. You’ll no doubt glow with happiness when it’s your time to sashay down that aisle, but why not make absolutely sure that you’ll look your beautiful best? Pour yourself a glass of celebratory bubbly and settle in ladies. It’s bridal beauty time! If there’s ever a time in your life to invest in getting your hair and makeup professionally done, your wedding day is it. Make sure to schedule at least a couple of “dry runs” to play around with different looks. Bring pictures. Bring your most honest bridesmaid. Take copious notes. Shoot, take up a collection. Just do it if there’s any way you can swing it. Finding and retaining someone whose entire livelihood depends on making others look their very best will take a huge weight off of your mind as you head towards the Big Day. I was fortunate enough to have the same guy do both my hair and my makeup, and I might as well have had a built-in therapist, y’all. No joke: on my wedding day, my daddy pulled my mama aside and said, “I don’t care what you’re paying him, he’s worth every penny. Julie’s as cool as a cucumber.” A bonus is that you won’t have to spend big bucks on all new makeup, as most artists worth their salt are packing a wealth of tools and products to bring out the most beautiful you. If hiring a professional just isn’t in your plans, get ready to play some serious “beauty shop” by playing around at your favorite department stores and cosmetic boutiques. Most reputable counters (Bobbi Brown, Trish McEvoy, Laura Mercier are just a few) have highly-trained artists who can offer a myraid of product suggestions and comprehensive looks for your wedding day. Make a day of it: grab your ‘maids, head to Nordy’s, get makeovers, then head to lunch! The Bobbi Brown artists are particularly skilled in putting together a beautiful wedding-day look that photographs well without making you look like a mannequin. Make sure you get “cheat sheets” for each look, complete with product formulas and shade names. Don’t be afraid to splurge if one entire look floats your boat; should that not be possible, spend your pennies on foundation, waterproof mascara, and a highlighter that won’t look glittery or harsh. One brand that has the photo-ready look nailed is Smashbox. I love love LOVE the Photo Finish Foundation Primer (in various colors and formulas to
60 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM Winter 2014
accommodate all skin types) and the Studio Skin foundation. The Camera Ready concealer and Photo Finish colorless loose powder are pretty dang amazing too. With your photographer flitting about during the course of your wedding day capturing your bridal glow, you want to make sure you look flawless, not chalky or as if you’re wearing a mask. Here’s a tip: avoid skincare or foundation with SPF, just for the day. They can appear whitish and ghostly in pictures. Also, go with waterproof formulas whenever possible for all products. I know, you don’t think you’ll cry. You will, and that’s perfectly okay, but there’s no need to ruin your makeup in the process. Get yourself a heavy-duty cleansing oil or balm to take it all when the party’s over and you’ll be just fine. Whether you’re the blushing bride, a bridesmaid, or just a beautysavvy guest, you will be the hero of the day by assembling a “bridal emergency” kit should one of the gals hit a snag (no pun intended). Grab the prettiest basket you can find and fill it with the following - yes, all of it: a pair of nude pantyhose, wet wipes, cotton swabs, dental floss and mouthwash, clear nail polish and a file, hairpins and safety pins, a sewing kit and straight pins, tweezers and band-aids, deodorant, eyelash glue and eyedrops, tissues, breath mints, body lotion, hand sanitizer, ponytail holders, Pepto-Bismol and Advil, to-go stain eraser pads and wrinkle-release spray, Blister Block (a miracle worker for tight shoes), super glue, earring backs, a disposable razor, lip balm, hairspray, and feminine products. Throw in a few granola bars or other portable snack and you have everything the wedding party could possibly need should an unforeseen issue threaten to spoil the parade (not today, halitosis!). Lastly, and most important - relax. Smile in the knowledge that all of your nearest and dearest are gathered to celebrate this wonderful milestone and to wish you a lifetime of happiness. Sneak outside with your bridesmaids and raise a glass to you, beautiful bride!

Weddings! Weddings, Weddings, Weddings...truly one of the most important events in any family’s life. “As the fulfillment of a dream - the daydreams of a little girl, the aspirations of a young man, the well-meaning wishes parents have for their children-the wedding is perhaps the single most telling institution of a culture. Like birth and death, the wedding is a rite of passage that comes complete with its own alphabet of traditions and historical associations. And yet, at the same time it offers two people a blank slate on which they can make their own distinctive marks. Those scribblings, at times hesitant and waffling, at times quite emphatic, ultimately become a portrait, not only of a bride and groom, but also of a society and its times.” from Weddings, Southern Style. That said, we are in the throes of planning our 4th wedding, which will take place this May, God willing, leaving only two more daughters and one son to “tie-the-knot!” Let us tell you folks, we could teach a course. One of the benefits of being in the book business is our ability to avail ourselves with every possible book on the subject, and we have! We have books on wedding etiquette, wedding planning, wedding venues, wedding decoration, wedding invitations, wedding gifts, wedding style, wedding fashion, wedding dresses, wedding cakes, wedding catering, Southern weddings, traditional weddings, barn weddings, rustic weddings, we even had one on “shotgun weddings,” but someone must have bought it because we cannot find it anywhere!
Within the covers of these books are a treasure-trove of ideas, advice and photos for all of our friends who say they don’t read. Great resources, providing hours of argument and entertainment for the whole family! So, if you, a family member, or for that matter, a worst enemy, has a wedding on the horizon, make Landmark Booksellers your next stop, and pick up several of these beautiful volumes to add to your library for years of entertainment, education and inspiration! YOUR PERFECT RING
TIFFANY & CO.
Fall in Love with
TIFFANY
THE TIFFANY ENGAGEMENT STORY
The engagement ring as we know it today, and the romantic traditions that surround it, are in large part the creation of world-renowned jeweler Tiffany & Co. Diamonds have long been an expression of affection and power. But it was Tiffany & Co. that turned these gems into the most exquisite and dazzling jewelry the world has ever seen. Tiffany’s insistence on absolute perfection produced diamonds of superior beauty. Each is a symbol that is worthy of true love and the promise of a lifetime of shared happiness together. With the introduction of the Tiffany® Setting in 1886, founder Charles Lewis Tiffany started a trend that grew into a cherished custom. This innovative setting lifts the diamond off the band into the light, maximizing the stone’s natural radiance. It remains the world’s most beautiful diamond ring and a popular symbol of true love, celebrated in literature, art and film.
64 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM Winter 2014
THE TIFFANY DIAMOND STANDARD
Tiffany’s diamond standards are far more stringent than those established by the industry. The jeweler accepts only .02 percent of gem-quality stones, which are graded at the Tiffany Gemological Laboratory, one of few such facilities operated by jewelry retailers. The laboratory’s master diamond graders give individual grades for cut, color, clarity, carat weight and presence. In the process, other diamond reports are frequently overruled.
These top-tier diamonds are placed in the hands of skilled diamond cutters who cut for brilliance, adhering to a strict geometric plan with exacting measurements, including precision of cut and symmetry. Together these factors give Tiffany diamonds their extraordinary presence: a breathtaking show of light, with utmost dispersion and scintillation created, when light enters the stone, reaching the perfectly positioned facets and mirrored directly back through the crown.
THE PROCESS IN SELECTING AN ENGAGEMENT RING
THIS YEAR, PUT YOUR BEST FACE
The selection and purchase of an engagement ring celebrates one of life’s most important moments, reflecting the love and commitment a couple has for one another. It is not only important to select a ring and diamond based on the popular 4 C’s, but on the “presence” as well. Particular attention should be paid to the precision of cut, the symmetry and the polish, which together influence the diamonds brilliance and overall appearance, as well as ethical sourcing methods. Remember to think long term. Engagement rings and weddings bands will last a lifetime and the style of it should reflect the taste and personality of the wearer. The possibilities are endless at Tiffany & Co., whether choosing a ring from our five icons or another of the many unique styles. Whichever it may be, know that by choosing a Tiffany & Co. diamond, you are selecting some of the most brilliant diamonds in the world.
THE FIVE ICONS
In addition to the Tiffany Setting, there is the Lucida®, an exclusive diamond cut with a setting of clean, sensuous curves. The diamond’s square mixed-cut shape combines the classic elegance of a step-cut crown and a brilliant-cut pavilion. Together these two faceting styles strike a balance between period cutting, with an emphasis on line, and modern-style cutting, with an emphasis on brilliance. Tiffany Novo®, a brilliant cushion cut inspired by the faceting of the famed Tiffany Diamond, epitomizes style now and for all time, with every subtlety of chic and originality brought to stunning fruition. Set in a customized mounting of four sleek, tapered prongs, the diamond generates an extraordinary show of light. Tiffany Soleste® is a cushion modified brilliant diamond encircled by a double row of exquisite bead-set diamonds. And Tiffany Harmony is a round diamond in a tapered platinum setting that is coupled with a contoured wedding band of impeccable style. Additional masterpieces from Tiffany & Co. include Tiffany Legacy®, Tiffany Grace, Tiffany Bezet, Tiffany Etoile and Tiffany Embrace.

Ashley Haggard & Woody Maddox Wedding Date: September 20, 2014 Woody and I met in the fall of 2010. I went to college with his brother and sister in-law, and we have several mutual friends. We hit it off immediately and started dating. From day one, Woody has gone above and beyond to show me how much he loves me. The proposal was no exception! The day we got engaged began with my friend waking me up at 4:00am. She told me I had to get up because I was going on a trip. I thought she was crazy, until she handed me a beautiful pink envelope. It was wrapped in a ribbon and sealed with a wax stamp. Inside was a custom printed card that said “Prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime!” On the card was a packing list and instructions to leave my house in one hour! In the car I was given an elegantly wrapped box. It contained seven more envelopes and a CD. The disc read, “Your destination awaits.” When I pushed play, Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York started playing! I was going to New York City! Envelope #2 contained my flight reservations, and said to open card #3 on the plane. When I was finally allowed to open it, I found reservations for a hotel in Times Square, and cab fare for my ride there. It was a beautiful summer day in NYC! We met at the hotel and spent some time exploring Times Square. After lunch, I opened card #4. It instructed me to dress up for a night on the town! As soon as we were ready to leave, I opened my next card. It said, “Proceed to Belvedere Castle in Central Park.” We drove to the park and made our way to the castle. Woody told me it was time for card #6. Inside was a handwritten love letter. He had me read it out loud. When I finished, I turned to find him down on one knee! I said yes! We spent the rest of the evening celebrating in the city! The whole experience was better than anything I ever imagined! I am so blessed to be able to spend the rest of my life with this incredible man!
PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME! Meghan Schmidt & Greg King Wedding Date: June 19, 2014 Greg and I met each other through mutual friends about three years ago. What began as a simple friendship between the two of us blossomed into an undeniable attraction about a year later followed by full blown head over heels love, which took us both by surprise. It has been a whirlwind ever since. Engaged this October 12th, 2013 in St. Thomas at the Ritz, he surprised me with a private sunset dinner on the beach and after dessert got down on one knee. He read a poem he wrote which ended in his asking for my hand. It still gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. He is my best friend, my rock, my person to be silly with, even let’s me call him goofy love names (which for his sake I won’t mention lol). Everyday I feel so truly lucky and blessed to have met such an incredible man to share my life with and cannot wait to call him my husband. We are getting married this June at the Ritz in St Thomas, which holds a special place in our hearts. We will say our vows on the beach at sunset surrounded by a few close friends and family. I can’t help but feel that all the puzzle pieces of our lives from before we knew each other and after have interlocked and completed a beautiful picture for our future lives together.

Chelsea Curtis & Will Bess Wedding Date: December 6, 2014
TIMING IS EVERYTHING.
Will and I met in college at Lipscomb University. We were both in the music department, I was a Music Ed major and he was a Nursing major with Music minor. He first wooed me with the sound of his voice! He is an amazing singer, and I have always greatly enjoyed watching him perform in concerts. We love to go on adventures such as hiking, kayaking, and flying. Will is a pilot, so we are fortunate to experience the awesome feeling of flight in a small aircraft. These adventures led me to go to graduate school and become an aviation management major. Apparently, I ruined Will’s plan to propose on multiple occasions. I wish I would have known!! Will was finally able to do so on New Year’s Eve 2013. All of our closest friends were with us to ring in the New Year, and there was defiantly a ring! Right after midnight, he led me to a secluded spot to “hear” the fireworks, then BAM! Down on one knee! Words cannot describe how excited I was to know that he was more than ready to take the next step in our big adventure. He is such a blessing in my life, and I am elated to know that I have so much support for our future endeavors.
THEN BAM! DOWN ON ONE KNEE! Krista Cook & Tim Ehret Wedding Date: November 8, 2014 The story of Tim and me is the perfect example of “timing is everything.” Tim played college football with the husband of my good friend, and now business partner, Lauren. We had met several times at random events and even have a picture of us sitting next to each other in the limo as a bridesmaid and groomsmen at Lauren and Richard’s wedding. Why did the fireworks not occur at first site, you ask? We were both in relationships with other people at the time and not interested in pyrotechnics with anyone else...a great testament to both of our characters, not to mention that Lauren usually presented Tim into a conversation by saying, “you remember him...Richard’s friend with the long hair? I think he had it in a ponytail the last time you saw him.” I can appreciate some healthy locks, but I’m not quite the rebel I may initially appear and prefer more of a clean-cut gentleman. Finally in January 2009 both of us were single (and well groomed) and the time was right. We “met” at Lauren’s birthday party. A couple of days after, Tim offered to cook Lauren a birthday dinner with the stipulation that she invite me. Five years later, I am blessed still with this amazing man! Tim proposed July 26th, 2013 after a sunset beach picnic at St. George Island. This is a moment that I had been dreaming about for over two years, yet no words can describe it. There is no other experience like realizing you get to spend the rest of your life with the person that makes you whole. After the crying and shaking wore off, we had a great night celebrating with champagne and six of our best friends. I will have the privilege of becoming Mrs. Ehret this November at The Hutton Hotel where we will share this joy with 125 of our closest friends and family. It’s a day I can’t wait for, but also pray that the months pass slowly so I can take in every minute of being a bride-to-be. It’s a once in a lifetime experience that I intend to enjoy, all the time knowing that the real adventure begins November 9th.

JUNE 29, 2013 On the beautiful evening of June 29th, 2013, David Matthew Teague, son of Garland and Myrna Teague of Brentwood, and Leigh Alyson Justus, daughter of Ron and Joan Justus of Knoxville, were united in marriage in Knoxville, Tennessee at Alyson’s childhood church, Central Baptist Church of Bearden. Friends and family gathered to witness the covenant marriage officiated by the couple’s current pastor, Carter Crenshaw of West End Community Church, and Alyson’s youth pastor, Mark Moreland of Central Baptist Church of Bearden. Alyson walked down the aisle to a string quartet performing the song “All I Want is You” by U2, David’s favorite band. The spectacular flowers which adorned the church and attendants were provided by Samuel Franklin of Clinton. The ceremony videography was provided by one of Alyson’s former film students Nick Serban of Fourthnick, and the entire event was photographed by Bill Waldorf of Waldorf Photographic Art. After the ceremony, a trolley car whisked the wedding party to the reception location, The Reserve at Bluebird Hill in Lenoir City. The guests enjoyed a Marble Slab ice cream bar, his and hers signature cocktails, wine, and Czann’s beer, brewed in Nashville by David’s friend Ken Rebman. The wedding cake, a three-tiered black and white design, and the groom’s cake, an homage to tri-athlons, were provided by Sweet Beginnings by Elaine. Various delectable dinner stations were catered by Deron Little of Season’s Cafe. Guests danced through the evening to a 9-piece Motown, pop, and Rhythm and Blues band, First Generation Band of Atlanta. Guests provided a sparkler exit for the couple making their way to their limo. The couple enjoyed relaxation and adventure on their honeymoon in Costa Rica. The couple resides in Nashville where David is a financial planner with Mayernick and Associates, and Alyson is an English teacher at Franklin High School.

Why Money Talk Should Come Before Bridal Talk
Probably the last thing on a bride’s mind when she’s planning her wedding is how she and her new husband will allocate the financial resources they’ll have in their new life together. But it should really be one of the first things couples think about when they decide to marry. In fact, I contend that discussions about how much money a couple will be making and how they’ll spread their income between spending, saving, investing and giving is one discussion they should have had long before talking about churches, dresses, attendants, music and ministers. Because disagreements about money is one of the most frequent causes of divorce. Here are some of the questions you both should be asking... and discussing. Because the fewer surprises, the better. • • •

What debts and assets will you be bringing to the marriage? How do you feel about debt? Are there some things on which we’ll need to borrow in order to buy? Do you save? Spend until its gone? What about paying cash vs. using the credit card? How will we budget? How detailed will it be? How often do we plan a budget? What happens if we can’t stay on budget? Do you invest? How much, where and how? Of the money we save, how will it be allocated? What is your risk tolerance? Would it be better to have joint or separate checking and savings accounts? What about individual accounts with a third account for the household? Who will pay the bills? Who will balance the account(s)? How much money is enough? How much is too little? How will we decide what we can afford?
Certainly, few couples will agree completely on all things financial. But a committed union will work through anything and find common ground that will ensure the stability and growth of the marriage and family. Knowing your partner’s concerns, aspirations and tolerances can keep you both moving toward the same goals. And that all starts with communications on the front end. Besides, who wants to say “I don’t” after you’ve said “I do?” Charlie Woodall, investment officer for First Farmers Investment Services, helps clients build personal wealth through investments such as mutual funds, stocks, fixed income securities, fixed and variable annuities and insurance products.

YOUR DINING GUIDE
RYAN AND SARAH
POMODORO
EAST
by Sarah Ballenger Photography by Ryan Musick
While we know that East Nashville is worth the short drive for hipster-gazing and the talent found in its music venues, its food scene also creates a magnetic pull to cross the tracks. Our luck took us there to Pomodoro East this month, which is one of Chef Willy and Yvette Thomas’s labors of love (they also own Eastland Café and Park Café). At Pomodoro, Chef Thomas teams with Chef Casandra Brooke to create authentic Italian fare, with approachable, modern twists, that stays true to Chef Thomas’s philosophy of “simple is better.” A diverse crowd was enjoying Pomodoro’s offerings: friends sharing a casual meal, couples out for romance, families with children, large parties, and neighborhood regulars. Pomodoro hosts a warm rustic environment - envision corrugated metal and reclaimed milled wood walls, exposed wooden beams and piping overhead, a wood burning pizza oven with bar seating (oh, the smells!) - and with its incredible food, generous portions, happy hour specials, and large outdoor deck, it is no wonder that it draws all kinds of diners. We were greeted with bread, made inhouse daily, lightly topped with sea salt and accompanied by olive oil with balsamic vinegar. Matt, our fantastic server, then presented a bottle of their 2011 Badia di Morrona Caligiano Chianti, which was ruby red, of medium intensity, flavored of black cherry and sweet spice, pleasing to the palate with a well balanced acidity, and an enjoyable pairing to each of our dishes! We then enjoyed the carpaccio, which featured a paper-thin slice of perfectly marbleized, beautifully clean Wagyu beef (sourced from near Atlanta) on
top of a subtle horseradish cream and finished with fried capers, micro basil, and parmesan cheese that provided great texture and salt, while allowing the dish to remain light, fresh and showcasing of the meat. Next, the Italian Chopped Salad, which was akin to antipasti over spinach, hearty, and dressed with a garlic Parmesan dressing. We then indulged with an “orangecello,” Pomodoro’s creative twist on limoncello - a delicious palate cleanser! For our main entrée, the Apple Braised Shortrib wowed. A mound of Parmesan mashed potatoes was surrounded by a sea of jus and topped with asparagus spears and the beef shortrib, which had a layer of truffle honey gremolata, acting as a boding agent for the crispy fried spinach on top. The meat was subtly caramelized and melted in your mouth, and the fried spinach was gently handled and without attempt to be turned into a potato chip. We hear the Bolognese and Chicken Parmesan keep people coming back from miles away and have pegged some pizzas as must-tries for our next visit. Pomodoro East is open for dinner nightly. Reservations can be made by calling 615873-4978 or online at opentable.com.

O’MORE STUDENTS DESIGN STEM ROOM FOR PEARRE CREEK ELEMENTARY
A group of O’More College of Design students had the opportunity to put their studies into practice last semester, when they helped Pearre Creek Elementary’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) design the school’s first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) room. The room, which is expected to be complete this spring, encourages young people to develop real-life solutions for problems through hands-on learning methods. It also enhances teachers’ roles as educators rather than information providers. When funds for the room are raised, Pearre Creek PTO President Alli Finney says the space will be completely built out hopefully with the help of O’More students. Prohibition Repeal Party Story & Photography by K York
Kathryn Tyminski
A Prohibition Repeal Party, presented by Three Blind Vines, was held in December at Gray’s on Main in historic downtown Franklin. Guests entered the restaurant on Main Street and were escorted to the back stairway to make their way to the second floor for the unique event. It was like stepping back in time being in the historic building, hearing the ragtime tunes of the Players Band and guests dressed in 1920’s and 30’s attire. A fabulously fun time had by all!

ART: Bebo The Franklin Art Scene on the first Friday of every month has become one of my favorite ways to spend my time. I get to meet so many interesting and talented people. One of those people is an artist that goes by the name Bebo. He creates colorful folk art that not only adorns walls but also puts out a positive message.
@YOURAndreaDavis facebook.com/artsandculturealacarte artsandculturealacarte.blogspot.com
Bebo’s real name is John Paul Daniel. In 1984, he moved to Nashville to pursue his career in music, as a songwriter and guitar player. His songwriting has lead to several cuts on the albums of artists like Clay Walker, Pam Tillis and Brian White. It was not until 1993 that he began creating folk art. Soon after, he had a dream that he was Bebo. He liked the idea of having a name that separated his art from his music. He started using Bebo, and it just stuck. “I was doing art and music, and the art just kind of took over,” Bebo said. “Now Bebo is just who I am.” Renowned folk artist, Reverend Howard Finster, heavily influenced Bebo to become an artist. Finster wanted to get his message out everywhere, and he did that through his art. Bebo has the same mentality. “Love God with all your heart. Love others, and the fruits of the spirit are all part of my message,” Bebo said. Bebo’s first pieces were out of old barn wood, using tractor paint. Now he uses a lot of lumber and regular house paint, in addition to old materials. He even has some really cool art made out of paint cans. Most of his art pieces are “all God’s creatures” and “blues men.” He makes the blues men because he loves blues music. However, he says he makes “Nashville hillbilly guys, too.” Bebo’s art is in galleries all over the country, but locally, people just call him to purchase his work. He loves to have them come out to his home studio. I have been, and it is very impressive. He definitely stays busy! “My main purpose for doing art is to put out a positive message,” Bebo said. “Love big. Love each other. People get that.” For more information go to bebofolkart.com

MUSIC: Kristin Larkin When I started this column in the summer of 2012, I first wrote about the weekly musical phenomenon that is the Deconstructed Songwriter Night on Tuesdays at Kimbro’s in Franklin. I shared about how amazed I was at the talent that I witnessed that night. One of the many incredible musicians was Kristin Larkin. I recognized Kristin from McCreary’s Irish Pub, but the only conversation that we ever had was her asking me what I wanted and me, more than likely, ordering a Woodchuck cider. I never knew what she was really about, until I saw her on stage.
Kristin’s style is Americana folk rock infused with a bit of a country flair. Her voice has been compared to Natalie Merchant’s, but she definitely has a sound of her own. She has a way of hypnotizing you with her raw emotion filled vocals and unfeigned lyrics, making you wanting more the moment she stops. Kristin’s music is about love and loss and heartache, knowing who you are and staying true to yourself through all of it. She is one hundred percent genuine about her life, and she shares it all with a great sense of humor. “Kristin is one of the most honest, heartfelt, down to earth artists I’ve ever met,” says friend and musician, Andy Selby. “Those qualities shine through in her lyrics and in the way she delivers a song. You can’t help but be moved by what she has to say.” So true.
About a year after I heard Kristin sing for the first time, she and I started playing some shows together and formed The Whiskey Wagon Radio Show. It came at a perfect time for her because she was promoting a Kickstarter campaign to help fund her new EP Regardless. In just under a month, she exceeded her goal due to the support of friends, family and fans. When talking about the upcoming EP, Kristin’s father said, “I have no doubt that the music on this little album is going to touch everybody that hears it.” He is so proud of her and says that she’s had this amazing talent her whole life. I was able to go into the studio one day to take some pictures and hear how the recording was going. I knew it would be great, but great does not begin to describe it. Julia Sinclair was in the studio with Kristin producing the EP, and the chemistry between them was unbelievable. Julia’s love and enthusiasm for Kristin’s music was exactly what was needed to take it to the next level. I am so excited to hear the finished product. The cd release party will be at Kimbro’s on February 14, 2014. I encourage you, dear readers, to come for the show and leave with a cd in your hand. You will not be disappointed. I am so honored to call Kristin Larkin friend. Now when she asks me what I want, my answer will be different. I want the world to hear her music, to know her heart and be inspired by her words. For more information on shows and how to purchase the cd, check out Kristin Larkin Music on Facebook.

THEATER: Ghost The Musical When I found out that the movie Ghost was made into a musical, I could not fathom how that could be a good idea. I love the movie, but it just does not seem one to include a chorus line. Well, it is coming to TPAC in March, so my skepticism has lead to a little research. Funny thing, I found out that Bruce Joel Rubin, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Ghost, initially thought the same thing I did. When he was first approached about writing the musical, his answer was no. “I couldn’t see an upside to it,” he says. “The film had a life, a reputation.” A couple of years later, Rubin met with the producers and discussed the idea of exploring the spiritual dimension of the story, meaning a cosmological view of the universe that does not begin with birth and end with death. The producers liked the idea, so the creating of the musical began. Still unsure, I began reading some reviews of the Broadway version. The most common theme is how surprised everyone has been about how good it is and amazed at the special effects. Apparently, this show has been able to do things on stage that no other has. Now I’m really intrigued. It seems that after seeing Ghost The Musical on Broadway, David Copperfield tweeted, “It’s rare for me to experience wonder, but my friend Paul Kieve gave me that experience for an illusion he created.” Kieve is the illusionist for the musical. He has won virtually every prestigious award bestowed by the magic community in his native England and in the United States. He has worked on over 100 theatrical productions – shows (Pippin, Matilda the Musical), ballets, and operas – in the West End, on Broadway, and internationally, and was involved in some capacity on all the Harry Potter movies. “I enjoy working in film, but I can’t compete with computer generated images,” Kieve says. “You really get the impact of magic in the theater. When you see something happen before your eyes, it gives you a moment of astonishment. And magic is such a huge part of drama. I recently did Kenneth Branagh’s Macbeth, and as I was working on it, I realized the similarities and overlap of themes between Macbeth and Ghost: jealousy, greed, murder, and a ghost coming back to warn or haunt somebody. That’s why Ghost is such a terrific story: it connects to great narratives and great tragedies. Working on it was a wonderful opportunity to use magic in such an honorable way; the story elevates the magic and the magic elevates the story.” Now that has me excited to see the show. For tickets go to www.tpac.org. The show runs from February 25th – March 2nd.

The crowds gathered along Highway 96, down Main Street and 11th Avenue to Boyd Mill Avenue, to watch the 2013 Franklin Christmas Parade. The annual event, organized by the Kiwanis Club, had over eighty floats and five bands marching in this year’s event. Rhori Johnston of News Channel-5 served as the Parade’s Grand Marshall. Children filled their pockets with candy and watched with excitement as Santa rode into town in his sleigh, waving and wishing them all a very Merry Christmas!
