Ninety days. I said it would take ninety days and lo and behold…. For once in scheduling and timing... I was right. I predicted and planned as part of my business plan just a few short 90 days ago that I needed three months to get my business started and determine success for our magazine launch. Clearly we felt success when the first issue in May launched. A huge accomplishment worthy of celebration. Then that second issue prints and you breathe a sigh of relief that it wasn’t just a first time fluke. The third issue is well… the start of the monthly drone really. Every month we are going to have to sell the ads, cover the events, edit, edit and edit again, design and publish a magazine? Yes that’s what goes through your mind at 2 am when you are on deadline. But when the sun shines and you go to press on your 4th issue with THIS adorable cover, you smile and know it’s all worth it and in 90 days’ time a dream is realized. The personal journey of starting Robertson Media Group and launching YOUR Williamson and YOUR Community Magazines is one that matters not to the community at large or appropriate in such a forum as this letter. However, the compulsion and desire to be here, present today as the Publisher of your community magazine is relevant in that I hope my personal success has been truly a community success. I want this publication to be something the community can be proud of. Something that they want to read every month. Something they look for and talk about and enjoy as they flip through the pages of a month in the life of their community. I hope we have succeeded in showcasing great events, great causes, great deeds and wonderful people. I hope we make building business and prospering possible through our affordable opportunities to advertise and our integrated marketing for local businesses – where we don’t just make money selling an ad, but truly care about your business succeeding and being a part of our county’s greatness. I have laughingly said many times, in this business, in this age, no one is here to get rich in publishing a community magazine! And that is so true. If money motivated me in that way, well…. I guess I would be doing something else. I have a “day” job so I can get my baby going and I relentlessly push myself and my staff to be better, do more and make it happen. After all, no dream came true, ever came to fruition, without effort and prayer and determination – sometimes sheer force of will. For those that actually know me, I have got all of those in sometimes annoying amounts! So here we are 90 days! Take that and step back because 90 months from now I look forward to celebrating another issue and in 90 years… well maybe my nephews’ grand children or perhaps my own great grandchildren will upload (or whatever happens in publishing in 90 years) their next issue of YOUR. In the meantime – enjoy THIS issue. Savor its summerness and all the great events of the last month. Gear up for fall Williamson County because we will bring it to you in September’s pages – in 30 days. Call me, email me, reach out and let me know what we did right. What we did wrong. And what you would like to see as we continue to evolve – for YOU!

ranklin on the 4th is a true summer tradition in Williamson County! It brings a great number of people from all over the state and beyond to celebrate the 4th in our historic town! Hosted by the Franklin Lions Club and the City of Franklin, the festival was successful again in its 15th year! It featured
on the 4th a patriotic costumed parade, free music and entertainment on two different stages, a petting zoo, a display of antique cars and so much more. The end of the day was of course wrapped up with a spectacular firework show that wowed the whole town and all of its welcome visitors! Happy birthday America!

ark your calendar for BrightStone’s 3rd annual BOWLABILITY, set for Monday and Tuesday, August 15th and 16th at Franklin Family Entertainment Center. You will want to be part of the fundraising efforts for BrightStone! BrightStone’s BOWLABILITY is structured around teams of six or fewer who pay $150 to register and reserve their lane. Each bowler is then expected to fundraise a minimum of $100 each. Everyone

new event venue was unveiled in July. The McConnell House, which is located at the historic Jail House on Bridge Street in downtown Franklin, opened its doors to the public for a viewing and open house. The McConnell House will have a focus on being

he Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County can be found in historic downtown Franklin behind the post office at the corner of five-points. For those that do not know what this amazing 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization does; The Heritage Foundation is dedicated to protecting and preserving our past by saving the places where great moments from history, as well as the important moments of everyday life, take place. They are helping revitalize neighborhoods and communities, spark economic development and promote environmental sustainability. Since 1967, the Heritage Foundation has sought to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Franklin and Williamson County through ongoing revitalization of Historic Downtown Franklin and the surrounding communities and countryside throughout our beautiful community. Many of the supporters of the organization gathered at Andrews Cadillac in Brentwood to honor fifty wonderful years of caring in this community. County Mayor Rogers Anderson spoke to the crowd, highlighting several of the countless activities this organization
helps with throughout every year. Since 1961, they have brought together resources and people with passion and expertise to create innovative, positive and lasting change that improves lives. Cars from 50 years ago were parked out front to remind guests of what it was like in 1961 at Andrews Cadillac. rentwood’s Crockett Park summer concert series welcomed Who’s Bad: Michael Jackson Tribute Band to the Eddy Arnold Amphitheater this July. Hundreds of people brought their blankets, lawn chairs, pets, food, drinks and dancing feet to enjoy the songs of The King of Pop. Who’s Bad had the crowd on their feet; everyone from old to young, all generations were dancing to the beats. The band is composed of two lead singer who greatly favor

he 37th Bethlehem United Methodist Church Fish Fry was held in mid-July on a hot, hot, hot day! But the heat did not slow down the people coming out to enjoy the best all-you-can-eat catfish around. The BUMC Fish Fry is the largest community event held in
the Grassland community, bringing thousands out to eat, listen to live Bluegrass music, bid on a silent auction and purchase items at the many different vendors. The proceeds from the Fish Fry help to support several church missions; including the River of Life youth mission project and Kathy’s Backpacks program.

Sally Poe in memory of
I
t was with much sadness I awoke a few Saturdays ago to read the news on Facebook, of all things, that Sally Poe had passed away suddenly the evening before. My mind immediately went to not a week prior when I had waved to Miss Sally on Main Street one evening as I crossed the street and she was standing outside her beloved HRH Dumplins’ restaurant – smiling and waving to everyone, friend or not, who passed down the street. I also had to think with a smile, of sitting behind she and her forever sweetheart, husband Bob, at a showing of “Gone with the Wind” during the opening weekend of the Franklin Theatre. Being around the two of them was so fun! There was never such a lively duo. Two things synonymous with this tiny but great lady – Franklin’s downtown and her great love with her husband. Whenever someone passes away that we know and thought much of, we are saddened. When it is without warning and unexpected, that sadness is coupled with poignant realization of how short life is and how our time here can go in a blink. It’s sobering to say the least, but it is also profoundly joyous when you think of how this person lit up a street and a community and all the wonderful memories she has fueled in recent weeks since her untimely death.

Quotes abound about Sally. Sitting at her funeral, I was struck by the truly heartfelt and wonderful emotions of those blessed to have had her in their lives. The tearful eulogy of her co-worker was a testament to the ability she had to run a business well, but also love her employees as family. And she loved the diners in her restaurant, as well. She was always stopping to read the guest book daily and walk around whenever possible and personally greet her many customers from far and wide. An online memorial tribute was given by a man from New York who had, only the week of her death, met Sally and been in the restaurant. Tourists abound in downtown and I am willing to bet there are former guests from all over the world who would remember her feisty demeanor and grace. As a community magazine publisher, it’s sad to lose someone so much a part of the fabric of our community. And knowing Sally for a long time, I too have my share of memories. I first knew Sally through the Heritage Foundation, on whose board of directors she served. She often brought us leftover Dumplins’ rolls to the office! Sally never missed a Heritage Ball; she and Bob were always there dressed to the nines and dancing the night away. She was integrally involved in the Historic Presbyterian Church and was a Pink Lady. Her contributions to our world are great. A bright light has gone out but her memory will burn forever bright for those who knew her a little or a lot. Sally herself espoused the adage “beautiful is as beautiful does.” No truer more apt words can be spoken for her. -Shelly

Fundraising Event for Big John ‘Art Blooms’ During Historic StARTS Art Classes

istoric StARTS art classes for children, sponsored by The Arts Council of Williamson County for children, ages three to six, will discover how “Art Blooms” on Tuesday, August 9, at 10 a.m. at the Carnton Plantation. The objectives of the class will be to learn how gardens were designed in the 19th century, hunt for shapes and colors to inspire individual work and explore watercolor as a medium. During the tour of the gardens, the children will also explore the scents created by the different herbs in the garden. The instructor for this class will be Casey M. Kirk, of Franklin, who was atelierista at Spring Hollow Early Learning Center in Franklin. Other teaching experience includes

n July 11th Hard Bargain Mount Hope Redevelopment and Sweet Cece’s in downtown Franklin hosted a fundraising event for John Murphy, AKA Big John. Twenty percent of all of the proceeds of yogurt bought that evening at Sweet Cece’s, went to helping rebuild Big John’s home, which is located in the Hard Bargain development. Big John has been a resident of Hard Bargain his entire life, and on June 5th his home caught
fire. The home, which is located on 9th Ave. North, caught fire early one Sunday morning. Fortunately, a neighbor spotted the fire, banged on his door and notified John that his back room was on fire. Thankfully, John escaped unscathed and is healthy and in good spirits.
Heritage Foundation Announces 2011-2012 Board
E accepting the award, Garrett dedicated the $500 honorarium — and pledged he and wife Vivian would match it — to the newly formed Friends of Franklin Parks LLC, which was founded by Franklin Tomorrow in April 2011 to accept tax-deductible donations for park improvements in Williamson County. Garrett specifically donated his money for improvements at the Park at Harlinsdale Farm, a 200-acre facility located on Franklin Road which is often referred to as the birthplace of the Tennessee Walking Horse.

The Lotz House welcomes home another Matilda Lotz painting
T
he Historic Lotz House museum in Franklin has been gifted another painting by the late artist, Matilda Lotz, who grew up in the historic home. After being open for only 32 months, this is the fourth painting acquired in the house collection. According to Lotz House Executive Director J.T. Thompson, the painting was a gift from an anonymous donor living in Helena, Calif. The piece is still held in its original gold leaf frame; it has a small golden badge in the center reading: “Matilda Lotz, Paris.” The painting, entitled “The Herd,” was completed in Paris between 1885 and 1886. Lotz was around 26 years old at the time. The donor told
Thompson how the painting survived the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but was damaged when it fell from the wall it was hanging on. The piece was repaired here in Nashville by conservator Sherry Oats; it is currently on display at the Lotz House Museum. The Lotz House is located at 1111 Columbia Avenue. hen Peggy Blake took over as the chair of her company’s United Way campaign committee 21 years ago, she had no idea that her service would still be carrying on today. Since that time she has even furthered her commitment to the United Way of Williamson County by serving as a member of the allocations panel for the past eight years. The allocations panel, which is comprised of community volunteers, is responsible for distributing funds to United Way partner agencies. In addition to her already full workload, Blake has just completed a three-year term serving as a board member of the Medius Circle, a young leaders organization that promotes volunteerism and is sponsored by the United Way of Williamson County. “I choose to
