Dear Readers,

Ashley Robertson marketing & sales director

A s always, I am in awe when a month seems to come and go – poof – gone! That is how it feels now that June is over and I suppose being busy is a good thing, but then again what happened to the lazy days of summer? Ahh… I guess as an adult, most of us must reconcile ourselves to the fact that those days are long gone. Unless we are lucky enough to have children in our lives to remind us of what it means to experience summer vacation, we kind of have to challenge ourselves to find that magic in different ways during this three month period of time. I have yet to be at a pool and have not seen the beach yet, but I did have ice cream and have enjoyed a few barbeques; Sat on a patio on Main Street and listened to music and I have enjoyed a cool evening on my screened in porch while it thunderstorms outside. Feel like summer to you yet? I sighed with glee when I saw the first fireflies in my backyard and I have found myself stopping mid stride and closing my eyes and just smelling…. Whatever fragrance or summer smell was in the air. Whether it’s the blooming of flowers or fresh cut grass, the smell of grilling or even that whiff of chlorine or suntan oil as you, at least, walk by the pool – there are truly some awesome sensory reminders of summer all around us. Now we enter July and ,of course, we all start this month off with that all around summer event of the 4th of July. One big birthday bash we all celebrate as Americans complete with fireworks and a hot dog! I know I look forward to it every year as a rite of summer and one that elicits many many wonderful memories of summers gone by. Where is the watermelon? Tomatoes and corn on the cob bought at the road side stand, anyone? And you can find plenty to do for the holiday at any number of community celebrations including those in downtown Franklin, Crockett Park in Brentwood and the big bash in downtown Nashville, as well. July does slow down a bit after starting with a bang – but Williamson County will still offer some activities to beat the heat. Take a look at our calendar and make sure you get some socializing in with neighbors and friends at great events like the Franklin Tomorrow Shrimp Boil, movies in Leipers Fork at the Lawn Chair Theatre, the Carnton Summer Concert Series and so much more. Now…. I am off to the back yard to set my lawn chair up in the kiddie pool – if I close my eyes and play some Jimmy Buffett I can almost hear the waves crashing!

Franklin Tomorrow Shrimp Boil: July 9

Y

OUR Featured Event for July is Franklin Tomorrow’s 5th Annual Shrimp Boil and Anne T. Rutherford Exemplary Volunteer Awards. This event is presented by Dickenson Wright PLLC. Held at the Shed at the Factory at Franklin, the Shrimp Boil is a fun and yummy summer event to support in YOUR local community. Daily Dish Café & Catering will provide the tasty shrimp boil. What a fun summer treat! During this special evening, many individuals in our community will be honored for their outstanding support to Franklin Tomorrow and exemplifying volunteerism in our community. Franklin Tomorrow is a nonprofit community organization that communicates a shared and evolving Vision for the future of Franklin and focuses that vision through education, advocacy, implementation and recognition of the Vision’s specific goals. In 2005,

Inspiring Eyewear for Expressive IndividualsTM 407 Church Street•Franklin•615-599-1800 James Tilley, O.D.•Penny Fishpaw, L.D.O. www.charactereyespc.com The Gold Boutique on Church 14 www.yourcommunitymag.com

Franklin Tomorrow initiated a process to review its original goals and strategies, assess the implementation effort to date, identify priority strategies, collect public input, and develop a plan of action. Three critical activities comprised the effort: Strategy Roundtables, Vision Fair and Board of Directors Workshop. At the Strategy Roundtables, community leaders assessed implementation efforts to date and proposed new strategies. The Vision Fair provided the public with the opportunity to review the existing strategies and give additional ideas. The Board of Directors used the feedback from these efforts and laid out the revised Goals and Strategies. Tickets are $50 per person and $25 of the adult ticket is tax deductible. You can purchase tickets to this year’s Shrimp Boil and Anne T. Rutherford Exemplary Awards at franklintomorrow.org or by calling 615-790-4077.

Franklin Theatre Grand Opening

story & photos (Jande Jackson)

ranklin welcomed back an old friend and landmark, the Franklin Theatre, on June 3, 2011. The steets of historial downtown Franklin were full for all the celebrations a hint of the 1930s flavor. While there were amazing costumes ranging from flapper dresses to movie charaters, the unique dress worn by Maggie Nietdeld turned heads on the red carpet(featured right). The dress material is the original curtian from “Gone With the Wind.” Whether you were on the red carpet or in the Square,

you were having a blast. From dancing to the sounds of live swing bands to “sneaking” off to a Speakeasy, you could find something for everyone. Most showed up to watch old films. Several lucky people were able to get their hands on a ticket for the 9:30pm viewing of “Gone With the Wind” inside the theathre. However, 3 large ourdoor screens showed “The Wizard of Oz,” “King Kong,” and “Swing Time.” To see upcoming events and purchase tickets, head to w w w. f r a n k l i n t h e a t re . c o m

Love YOUR Look from Day to Evening

Hues of orange are very popular this season and are available everywhere! Finding the perfect shade of coral/orange for your skin tone should be simple…and is a must have for your lips! Luckily, when it comes to hair, messy is in! Keep that just-offthe-beach hair and “clean it up” with a dry shampoo. My favorite right now is Umberto Beverly Hills Dry Shampoo ($8.99 at Target). With just a few sprays around the outside hair line, it instantly provides volume and cleanliness. Grab a clear elastic hair band, throw it in a pony tail or give it a quick run thru with a brush. By now, your hair and makeup are rockin’!

W

ow, where did spring go? Summer is already upon us and you know what that means: kids home from school, vacations, stifling heat…and sunburns. My hope is that you will find some answers below on how to beat the heat (and those sunburns) as well as how to effortlessly go from day to night with a few of my quick makeup and styling tips! I’m going to begin by telling on myself… At the beginning of every summer I promise that I will not overdue and overexpose my skin to the sun, pledging to faithfully applying my favorite Coola SPF regularly throughout the day and, of course, re-apply as directed. But without fail, one-week in, I find myself thanking my Momma for passing along an amazing sunburn remedy that I have shared with so many over the years and now passing the secret on to you - Milk Of Magnesia. By applying a thin layer with a cotton ball to the skin and allowing to dry before you go to bed, the Milk of Magnesia will create a soothing “milky-chalk” like layer on your skin. Give it a quick rinse in the morning and it washes right away. The hot sting associated with the sunburn will be reduced dramatically and in some cases, gone the next day! So remember, before heading out to any summer event, whether simply sunbathing poolside, surfing the waves or enjoying a picnic in the park, make sure to throw some sunscreen in your bag! (Be sure to check the expiration date on your sunscreen if you are using last year’s.) No sunburn issues, but worried about how you will look for a night out after a long day in the heat? Who wants to fret about getting ready or what to wear? With a few of my quick makeup and styling tips, you can easily go from day to night in just minutes with little to no effort! One of my favorite summer looks is a light amount of makeup with pop of great color on my lips…It’s quick and easy and the lip color helps create a more finished look to my face as if I spent twice as long getting ready! Start by applying a sheer tinted moisturizer to the entire face. You don’t want to cover up your beautifully sun-kissed glow with a heavy foundation, but instead enhance it! The tinted moisturizer will help do that as well as even out the skin tone without giving you a powdered-down look. You can also spot treat with concealer as needed for extra coverage in certain areas with blemishes, sun spots or dark circles. Apply a small amount of creme or powder blush to the apples of your cheeks. For the eyes, shoot for a shimmery light color (close to flesh tone) and apply over the entire lid (depending on time, you may also quickly run eyeliner across the top of your lash line), add a couple coats of mascara and a pop of color to your lips and... FINITO! 20 www.yourcommunitymag.com

Now all there is left to do…figure out what to wear. No more fretting ladies…it doesn’t have to be difficult! Every summer I purchase a great new pair of jeweled sandals or flip-flops and a pair of wedges [Dolce Vita for Target wedges ($22.49)] that go with almost everything. Gold and silver hoops and a studded earring are also must-have accessories. Make it easy…a great summer sundress with some fabulous wedges or jeweled sandals can go a long way, especially paired with what I like to call the “hot lip.” Choose one of your go-to hoops or studs to finish off your look perfectly. You will be turning some heads with little to no effort at all…guaranteed! As always, providing a one of a kind style for your one of a kind life… In Love (and Sun),

N

atasha Smith and Robert Hendrix were joined in matrimony by their family friend, Pastor Dave “Poppy” Asch, on May 7, 2011 as the sun began to set at the historic Carnton Plantation. The ceremony took place in the garden beside the mansion under the grand 150 year old Osage Orange tree. The music for the ceremony consisted of traditional Irish instrumental songs performed by flutist Marney McCague Hardin of 13B and guitarist Travis Johnson. The bridal party proceeded down the aisle to “Inisheer” and the bride was escorted by her father to “Hector the Hero”. The wedding party recessional was “Dave White’s”. Immediately following the ceremony, the guests were invited to tour the mansion and then gather for the reception on the beautifully lit

patio of the Fleming Center. The bride’s southern belle themed ivory gown was a strapless, corseted sweetheart bodice with a chapel train covered in flowing “pickups” throughout. The matching decorative rosettes on the gown and birdcage veil were created by Annie McCreary of “My Swallows Nest,” in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The bridesmaids wore lavender tea length dresses with matching wedge heels, perfect for the outdoor spring event. The flowers in the bridal bouquets, boutonnières and reception center pieces were a mix of wildflowers in lavender and pale pink that consisted of sweetheart roses, stephora and gerber daises that showcased the beautiful blossoming colors of spring, courtesy of Shea Freeman of Freeman’s Flowers.

The drinks were provided by McCreary’s Irish Pub and Eatery, owned by the bride herself, and the food for the reception was a delicious buffet of homemade favorites from Will and Judy Matheny of Providence Farms Catering Company. The buffet consisted of an array of tables with breads, cheeses, fruit, pasta and spring salads with unique dressings like Honey Sunflower Vinaigrette, Horseradish Pesto and Fresh Basil. The main dishes were shrimp and grits and citrus chicken skewers. Casey Thompson, of Cakes by Casey, baked a delicious red velvet cake with butter cream icing decorated with a beautiful wire replica of the Osage Orange tree as a cake topper made by the bride’s

sister and local artist, Ashley Smith. The groom’s cake was a festive UT orange creamsicle cake. The couple’s first dance was to John Legend’s, “I Love, You Love” and the father of the bride chose to dance his father daughter dance to “Forever Young,” by Bob Dylan. The guests then danced the night away to a compilation of music put together by the bride and groom. At the end of the reception the couple left in a 1960s Mustang Convertible, driven by the groom’s father, to set off on their honeymoon in the Dominican Republic. Every moment was captured by photographer Chrissy Katina, of MagnifyU.

Tyler Berry, Mayor Rogers Anderson, Mayor Ken Moore, Phil Fawcett

I

n honor of Father’s Day, Dr. David Vanderpool was selected as Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s Hometown Hero in June. Joined by family members including his son who nominated his father and the staff at Darrell Waltrip Automotive, Vanderpool was commemorated for his honor. Vanderpool was nominated by his son for his passion to improve the lives of others. “I have been profoundly

influenced by my father and his selfless giving and am grateful that others see him as the hero that I know him to be,” says son, David Stalling Vanderpool. From Ghana, Haiti, Honduras and Mozambique to New Orleans, Alabama and Nashville, Vanderpool has been an aid to global poverty and worldwide disaster relief for many years. In 2005 he founded Mobile Medical Disaster Relief, an international nonprofit that works to serve the destitute in areas left impoverished by natural disasters and human oppression. The $500 donation from Darrell Waltrip Automotive will go toward MMDR’s next campaign in Ghana to leverage healthcare and water purification to release children from slavery. Darrell Waltrip Automotive’s Hometown Heroes is a monthly event honoring Middle Tennessee residents who have made a positive impact on their community. Nominate your hero at www.darrellwaltrip.com. Zumbathon to fight Cancer

M

elissa Thomas, a Zumba instructor for Williamson County Parks & Recreation recently coordinated a Zumbathon at the Longview Recreation Center in Spring Hill to fight cancer. The funds raised benefited the American Cancer Society and another local beneficiary, Cat’s Warriors Relay for Life team. Cat is a dear friend of Melissa’s and she is battling cancer. She is the mother of two children who need her, a friend to many and the type of person who would drop everything to care for someone in need. She is fighting with everything she has and her friends and family are fighting right along with her. The very successful Zumbathon was a stand of support for her and the millions of other women and men who are in this same battle, and to fight against this deadly disease. Overwhelming support came that day to dance, helping Melissa donate funds to this incredible cause so one day there will be a cure for cancer!

The idea is for people to live, work and shop in the same place, all within walking distance. “I do think there is a trend of people who want to hearken back to the old neighborhood feel. Being able to walk to the butcher, baker — know everyone,” Shelby Larkin, a Boyle Development official, said. “I think people are looking for that sense of community right now.”

Y( )UR wedding

Share your special day with YOUR community. I

n March of 2011, when Annie and T.J. asked our 17 year old son Alex to be “one of two best men” at their June wedding , he was delighted. Annie Shebuski and T.J. Antaya are a young couple living in Knoxville, Tennessee. They were recently wed in Franklin, Tennessee in Annie’s parents’ back yard. Flowers and shrubs of a terraced garden was the scenic setting for the ceremony. Their invitation to Alex to be included in their wedding day was very special. Annie first met Alex three years ago, in a spin class with Alex’s father at the gym. They were using sign language to communicate, as Alex is hearing impaired and speaks with great difficulty. Annie, the spin instructor, joined in and spoke with Alex in sign language. When anyone signs to Alex, it makes his day. This was the start of a wonderful friendship. Annie helped Alex at the gym to become more fit, she accompanied him in a support capacity at high school venues and spent time just being a friend. Annie became an extended member of our family.

During this time, as Annie got back into signing, she realized her gift and love for working with hard of hearing and deaf children. She successfully commenced her career at TSD (Tennessee school for the Deaf ) two years ago. T.J. entered the picture last fall and warmly shares Annie’s genuine friendship with Alex. So together they extended the kindest invitation for Alex to be included in their garden wedding. The story doesn’t quite end there. Annie and T.J. decided to have a small celebration, cutting many costs associated with their wedding day. They did this in order to give anonymously toward the wedding of a young engaged couple who hit financial hardship due to serious illness. In the end, Annie and T.J.’s wedding could not have been more perfect. The day was warm, the sun was shining, the minister delivered a beautiful marriage ceremony and a terrific time was had by the forty guests, whom all witnessed Annie and T.J.’s love for one another but also for God, their family and friends.
