PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Shelly Robertson publisher Dear Readers, It’s clearly a cliché but I cannot help but look at the month of April, as a beautiful month of rebirth and renewal. We have emerged from the cold and dreary winter, figuratively rather than literally in Middle Tennessee’s case! But the true beginning of the spring season always brings out a bounce in the step and a face towards the welcome warmness of the sun. Brighter colors and of course the celebration of Easter with eggs, chicks and bunnies, gives us a feeling of joy as we see flowers and budding trees and begin to spend our time outside whenever possible. I am in love with our cover shot this month featuring some beautiful children and shot on the ever gorgeous grounds of Westhaven. Appreciate their making sure our stage was perfect for an Easter inspired shot! This issue was full of special meaning for all of us here at Robertson Media Group. As hard as it is to believe, we are celebrating our company’s one year anniversary in April. It was a year ago that with sheer will and a strength of purpose inspired by a desire to produce something to promote this great community we are lucky enough to call home, that Anna, Ashley and I decided to launch our own company and publish what has become YOUR Williamson. Starting and running a business has its challenges and we have been blessed to have so many intelligent, wise and helpful friends along the way. Our first customers and the people who had faith in us and this product before we ever shot the first event or sold the first ad, is humbling to this day and inspiring to say the least. We had never done it, but we were determined and we started running and haven’t stopped or looked back once even when we had mountains to climb and fire pits to get around. They say don’t go into business with family? Well in this instance, that has proven untrue. And those who share my name and those who simply share my passion, are all family and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you Williamson County for letting us take our leap and for catching us and embracing us. We promise to keep at it and keep getting better, bigger and more more more of what you want. Our readers, our clients, the events we cover and the organizations we try to help, are all like family now too. Look for some REALLY big changes and additions to the magazine with our anniversary issue in May. We have a lot of new clients on board with us, new expanded distribution including all county Harris Teeters and Kroger grocery stores and our staff continues to develop and expand. We definitely have spring fever these days and not to get out of the office but to get to our office – Williamson County and its’ residents and businesses. We are so excited we can’t wait to go to work every day! Thank you for allowing us to be YOUR Williamson. See you at some really special events this month – get the sundresses and sandals out and join the ladies at Monroe Carrell Jr’s Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Friends and Fashion, luncheon and Fashion show produced by Belk, attend several nights of delicious wine tasting events with Williamson County’s premiere wine event – A Vintage Affair, dance in the streets at the Main Street Festival, and scramble at the BRIDGES Golf Scramble hosted by Westhaven. April promises much fun and we look forward to seeing you! Happy Easter, Shelly

story & photography by K. York It was the night for a Fight! A Fight for Kids in need and the faithful supporters of the Charley Foundation fought the threat of incumbent weather to attend the eighth annual Ringside: A Fight for Kids charity event at the Factory. It was an evening of musical performances and professional boxing , but it was Michael Stanley singing our National Anthem and Hailey White sharing her wish to attend the 2012 Olympics that brought this crowd to their feet and had them digging deep into their pockets to make sure the dreams of children in need do come true. It was a “Knock-out evening indeed!

Cool Springs

Opening April 2012 Ken Melrose, Personal Training Director B.S. Fitness & Wellness FMS Specialist, NASM-CPT, USAW-SPC

It can be intimidating to join a gym or start any type of exercise program, as we are constantly bombarded by fad diets or exercise programs that guarantee results. Each person you talk to will give their own opinions on weight training, the best cardio activities and what you should be doing to get results. Even when coupled with good intentions, this can all add up to a confusing mess, causing more frustration than necessary. We all know that exercise is beneficial to our health and have likely heard this from people of authority in our lives. Knowing this may be enough to get you to the gym, but what should you do now? Where do you start? You start at the basics, in the same way you start with a foundation before you build a house. While the foundation may not be considered glamorous or exciting, it is equally, if not more, important than the number of repetitions you can do in any exercise or the number of miles you can ride, run or walk. Neglecting to learn the basics may potentially cause harm to your body, so why not start learning now? Learning about movement quality is where you begin to build your foundation. Think of how many day-to-day tasks that you perform: lifting, bending and squatting and whether or not they are or have been painful. Are you going through these movements in a way that may hurt you at some point in life? Has your Personal Trainer ever talked to you about this? If they haven’t, you are not alone and we are here to help!! The first step in the right direction is to identify what movements you cannot do by finding someone who can take you through the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). The actual screen only takes about 15 minutes and consists of 7 movements: Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, InLine Lunge, Shoulder Mobility, Active Straight Leg Raise, Push Up and Rotary Stability. Take the time for you and your body to learn what movements need improvement, you deserve it! After you have been through a FMS, learned how to move properly and mastered the basic movements, it is easy to decide what to do for an exercise program! So, what should you do? Whatever you enjoy the most! Just don’t lose those basic movements. Interested in a personal FMS with Ken? Call 615.708.5500 or email Ken@workoutanytimenashville.com for more info. Be one of the first 200 members & join for $49!! (Regular price $99)

The street was packed with beer enthusiasts donning their best Irish attire. These eager participants tasted more than 50 beers presented by Lipman Bros. and enjoyed this festive event featuring more than 20 shops on Franklin’s awardwinning Great American Main Street. Many Franklin residents and others from around the community make this their St. Paddy’s Day tradition. This continually sold out event is definitely one not to miss! story & photography by Andrea Davis Stylists, model hopefuls, and lots of fans gathered at The Mall at Green Hills to hear what nationally renowned fashion consultant and television star, Tim Gunn had to say about the latest trends. With a personality as colorful as the spring line, Gunn shared his expertise and sometimes brutally honest opinion of the Do’s and Don’ts of what to wear for all body types. After models took the runway in what’s new from Kate Spade, Lucky and Juicy Couture, the audience was able to participate in a question and answer session with Gunn, followed by an after party. Gunn is most known as on-air mentor to designers on the reality television show Project Runway.

The crop pant is not for everybody, just those who are tall. Un-tucked shirts are only ok on men in shorts or with a tucked t-shirt underneath. Maxi dresses can only be dressed down. No heels with the Maxi ladies! Everyone should have a great trench in his or her wardrobe. If you have the body and are wearing short shorts, pair them with a volume top. Tank tops with short shorts are “vulgar”. Deep purple is the new black. Navy is also replacing black. Horizontal stripes are ok. It’s all about the size of the stripe. Not too wide! Dresses and skirts should not be longer than the lowest part of the kneecap and shorter than two inches above the knee. Always shop your closet first. You never know what you are missing. Know who you are, own it, and don’t try too hard! 22 Y( )UR | www.yourcommunitymag.com

With April, we not only get Spring and fresh flowers in our community, but the High Schools also hold their Proms. This is an exciting time of year for many juniors and seniors! With all the new colors and trends this year, prom fashion is nothing short of stylish. YOUR Williamson has partnered up with some of your local businesses to help you dress for Prom 2012. Models Katie Hill, Taylor Knight, Anthony Brayer and Steven Kupecz are all seniors at Independence High School. They are showing off the latests trends for your prom fashion needs. Katie and Taylor show their colorful side with Katie in a bright orange v-neck dress with an adorable yellow clutch to create color blocking paired with a layered chain necklace. Taylor wears the multi colored metallic dress with bold gold jewelry and a gold clutch to match. They also show the classic princess style with fuller skirt gowns in different shades of pink, both with added flare from sequins and silver metallic. Metallics are very in style this season and the silver is really stunning with the pale pink. The sequins paired with tulle make for really fun textures in a beautiful color. Anthony and Steven showcase the classic tuxedo with the splash of color on the vest and ties. This year, bold colors are in and these guys are not afraid to show that off! Gentlemen can match their dates dresses, or go with a stand out bright color of their choice. Thank you to Belk Department store of Cool Springs Galleria for the gorgeous gowns, jewelry and clutches, Men’s Warehouse in Cool Springs Galleria (upstairs near Sears) for Steven’s tux and Street Tuxedo of Franklin, TN for Anthony’s tux. Go see them to get your look for this year’s prom!

Magnolia Hall

THE GRANDE DAME OF FRANKLIN photography by Caitlin Daschner, story by Shelly Robertson

Anyone who has driven west down 96 out of downtown Franklin, passes by the expansive iron gate, the green sloping lawn, pond and fountain. The imposing brick columned showplace is known as Magnolia Hall. This local treasure has graced the pages of Southern Living, National Geographic, Antique Magazine, Classic America by Wendell Garrett and various other local publications. Adding to its colorful history; actor Sylvester Stallone lived here while filming the movie, “Rhinestone. Magnolia Hall is a timeless beauty and an impeccable example of a classic Italianate architecture. Built in 1840 by William S. Campbell, this truly southern mansion has maintained much of the original structures or their remnants throughout the years, including a guest house converted from the original kitchen and connected to the mansion via a covered breezeway; a stone building constructed out of the original slave-built stone fence; a garage and tool house built around the original smoke house; a small barn with tack room; and a spring house. Other more modern features include the painted board fencing with three-wrought iron gates, two antique and one reproduction; imported statuary; a spring fed lake and fountain; a kidney-shaped pool and stone patio. Magnolia Hall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 1975; being certified on the register as the CAMPBELLGARRETT Home. The home was formerly known as the William S. Campbell Place and it stayed in the hands of the Campbell heirs until January 1899. april | Y( )UR 37

Y( )UR news

The impressive structure has many unique features on the interior as well. A full size storage attic or trunk room is accessible by permanent stairway from the second floor level. A cupola with widow’s walk and wrought iron railing rests in the center of the roof. Identical twin stairways rise majestically from the central hallway to the second floor. The central hallway is about 12’ x 50’ and extends the entire depth of the home. There are two matching parlors, a state dining room, powder room and bedroom with bathroom on the first floor. The second floor has a 12’ wide full-length hallway with built-in bookcases, four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are eight fireplaces in the home. One could lounge all day on the double-decked verandas enjoying the in town but seemingly in the country view. The windows and doorways of the home are gently arched with solid zinc cornices. A covered brick porch extends the full length of the rear of the one-story wing, while a stone patio lies across the front extending off the kitchen and breakfast room. Magnolia Hall has the original pine and poplar floors. Beautiful lighting adorns much of the house including the entrance hall featuring three matched English early 19th century Waterfall crystal chandeliers. The parlors have matching antique French bronze and crystal chandeliers and the state dining room has an antique French crystal chandelier. Other chandeliers include an antique French Empire bronze in the upstairs hall. The hall and principal rooms on the main floor also feature massive crown molding and medallions. Nationally known decorator, Mark Garrett, restored the home in the 1970’s and it was the location of the very first Heritage Ball in Williamson County. Current owner and local realtor with John M. Green Realty, Ann Inman, moved to Williamson County in 1977 and fell in love with the historic Magnolia Hall after having lived in a contemporary home. She and her children, Dixie, Hooper, Tina and Jan enjoyed life in this seemingly magical 38 Y( )UR | www.yourcommunitymag.com

place when they were growing up and carry fond memories of the eleven doors to come in and out of! No locking doors back then! As well as sliding down the central hall staircase rails and celebrating holidays with family and friends numerous times over the last 35 years. There are now wonderful Easter egg hunts and indoor golf in the central hallway for the grandchildren! Ann has collected many beautiful antiques and other treasures over the years which fill this lovely structure with both a homey and historic ambiance. The property is certainly one of the most unique in Franklin sitting on one of the largest tracts of land within town. Despite its grand feel upon approach and from afar, this home has been anything but cold. Rather, has provided a wonderful, warm and enthralling place to call home. The property is currently on the market listed with John M. Green Realty. For more information contact Ann Inman at 615.790.1610.

Local finance and tax planning expert Peniruth Ingram contributes to “Breaking The Tax Code: 2nd Ed.” Peniruth (Peni) Ingram, certified public accountant, recently joined a select group of America’s leading financial professionals to collaborate and co-write the finance book titled, Breaking The Tax Code Second Edition: America’s leading Tax Professionals Reveal Proven Strategies to Legally Minimize Your Taxes and Keep More of What You Earn. The book features advice from financial professionals and experts from across the country. Each author reveals tax secrets and strategies to help people from all walks of life “break the tax code” and keep more of what they earn. Peni Ingram contributed a chapter titled “Home Office Deduction For your Business – Yes! You Can!” On the day of release, Breaking The Tax Code: 2nd Edition reached best-seller status in three Amazon.com categories: Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Planning and Forecasting and Book Keeping. Peniruth (Peni) Ingram is a certified public accountant who has 26 years of experience working in public accounting firms as a senior auditor and tax expert. She is now using this experience in her own practice doing audit, accounting and tax preparation. She recognizes that in this busy world, there are many business owners who have an expertise in providing goods and services to their customers, but haven’t the time or ability to maintain their financial recordkeeping and are looking for solutions. Reading her book makes it easy to understand basic accounting principles which many small business owners are challenged to learn quickly when dealing with business and tax issues. Peni’s goal overall in her business is to help small business owners in a fair and easy to understand terms. She wants to be a part of your business and help you grow. During this tax season, this book is a must read for anyone in business or in general for personal tax questions. The experts who authored this book wish to de-mystify the Tax Code for you. They come from many different areas of tax practice. They will relate experiences with their tax practices and add their advice for dealing with the Tax Code and the IRS for your information. You will be pleasantly surprised at their detail - and you probably will wish to discuss the relevant sections with your CPA/ Tax Accountant or Tax Attorney. We are all aware that tax evasion is illegal, but seeking to minimize one’s income taxes according to the law is totally acceptable per the Supreme Court. by Matthew D. Magallanes Being a big fan of SEC basketball I was surprised to run into famed Alabama All American, Jim Farmer at the Artistry Spa Salon in Westhaven Town Center. I was even more surprised to learn that Jim actually owned and operates the upscale venue with his lovely wife, Angelisa. It was no surprise to see Jim surrounded by hip and beautiful people. During his tenure at Alabama he was an SEC fanfavorite. After going in the first round of the 1987 NBA draft he spent five years under the Pro ball spotlights. Jim later enjoyed a successful stint in Los Angeles, playing with the popular Magic Johnson All Stars and building a very successful modeling career, landing on leading magazine covers such as Men’s Fitness and appearing in seven national television commercials. His handsome good looks and superb physic were in great demand both on and off the court. “After basketball I made my way to Franklin to pursue my lifelong interest in singing.” Upon releasing a well received debut album “Baby Come On” in 2002, Jim was diagnosed with colon cancer. “The experience changed my perspective on everything, as you would expect. I dropped my musical ambitions to be home, get more involved at church and to start my own business right here in the Westhaven Town Center. You, know... to live the small town dream,” says Farmer. A former Miss Maryland - Teen USA, Angelisa Farmer, had also enjoyed the limelight of pageants, concerts and official appearances. Like Jim, she traded her burgeoning singing career to become a mother and salon operator. “My family was not surprised that I ended up with a salon. My mom says as a child I would disappear whenever she shopped at department stores; always to be found at the make-up counter covering my face with any sample I could reach. It is still a running family

community Y( )UR joke.” Today Angelisa is recognized as one of Nashville’s leading makeup artists for top performers, photographers and adding a special touch for brides-to-be. “Makeup is something I really enjoy. I especially love weddings and proms. It’s fun being part of these exciting events.” Jim says running a small business is every bit as challenging as playing in the NBA. The work ethic and dedicated teamwork are every bit as important in the Spa Salon as in Pro Basketball. “I’m not a beautician, a masseuse or a stylist. It turns out my core value is really being a coach; moving a diverse team of artists in a direction that satisfies the customer and creates a good work environment.” Angelisa manages the shop when not in makeup sessions. Jim handles operations and bookkeeping and helps to care for their two children James, age 4 and Jorian, age 14. “These days I do much of the parenting and housework, which is fine by me. It is quality time with family that my other career options made impossible. At age 47 Jim is still a jock at heart, playing basketball, coaching the 17-and-under AAU Tennessee Tigers and providing elite personal training to a select clientele. When you visit the Artistry Spa Salon in Westhaven Town Center you can’t miss the 6’4”Jim, who usually dons crimson Alabama logos and the latest Nike sports gear. (Nike still sponsors him.) “My NBA and professional sports pals like to tease me about running a ‘salon’, instead of a ‘saloon’,” he mused. “The jokes are all in good fun, but I tell them they don’t have the guts to run a salon. Sure I liked the spotlight, but there is plenty enough glamour for me at Artistry Salon.” Artistry Spa Salon is Located at 188 Front Street in the new Westhaven Town Center on West Hwy 96. Visit www.artistryspasalon.com, or www.jimfarmer.com or www.westhaventc.com for more information.
