Publisher’s Letter

STAYING RELEVANT TO YOU

I

“Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow.” MARY ANNE RADMACHER

I always seem to have the letter from the publisher sitting in my to do file at the end of magazine production – every single issue as the very last thing I churn out. Probably because I am compelled to want to share something that is profound and relevant to YOU – our reader, rather than something that may be of importance to me solely. Obviously that would be the purpose of this forum; for those of us at the magazine to offer up some thoughts on our issue, this month in our community and our publication’s place of relevance in both YOUR life and the life of our county. Luckily for us, every issue we produce is filled with relevance since it’s all about YOU! Your businesses, your talents, your organizations, your charities, your giving! Whenever I am asked how we came up with the name of our magazine it makes me laugh as I have always felt like it was so obvious – Williamson is where we live and YOUR is what we are about. That being said we constantly strive to be of greater purpose overall and look for innovative methods and strategy to do just that. Recently we decided, based on hours and weeks and months of research, discussions with the more astute and in general just smarter people than us – to figure out how to make YOUR Williamson more meaningful in our neck of the woods, for our readers, our clients and of course for the organizations and events that abound here, doing such good work for our community. And we realized, as many of our fellow print media have, that in order to compete in today’s ever changing and evolving world of in your face media outlets, online, social media, and integration of media strategy, we had to step up our game. So we are. We may not get it perfect on the first try. But then who ever does? But one thing we will promise is that we will keep at it until we get it right – for YOU! This month we have taken our print product to a whole new level of quality. Something we felt it deserved as it represents Williamson County and part of our new efforts and strategy will be to showcase our community not just within, but outside our area to those who will visit here, move here and in general hear about us and want to learn more about why Money Magazine recently listed Franklin #52 in the top 100 small towns in which to live; saying Franklin was included among “those terrific small cities that offer what American families care about most -- strong job opportunities, great schools, low crime, quality health care, and plenty to do. And they’re true communities too.” Couldn’t have said it better myself about Franklin and of course really, overall the entire county of YOUR Williamson. We have partnered with multiple non local destinations and counterparts for future projects and cross promotional opportunities we know will benefit our core demographic. We look forward to sharing those affiliations ongoing. We are stepping up our game within our own structure, fine tuning and growing our staff, implementing quality control and doing our best to address your concerns, needs, wants and issues whenever we can within our publication’s reach. We are making sure that the numbers we give our clients and readers are truly reflective of our distribution and circulation and we are growing those two areas as much as possible, a little at a time, each issue. We are now able to provide an integrated media offering for advertisers that includes our brand new website at www.yourwilliamson.com, which will feature ongoing monthly content independent of the print version and will allow us to serve our customers and readership from the online perspective in a much more dynamic and strategic way. This will also, of course, include the ability to promote on Facebook and other social media outlets and we will be utilizing our already very popular weekly eblasts to get the word out faster about events, business news and more. If it’s happening in Williamson County – you will find it on yourwilliamson.com. Please take a moment and sign up for our eblasts via the website and also LIKE us on Facebook so that you can enter lots of fun contests and promotions and get daily community news! Well, that feels like a pretty good list of ideas turned into reality now in tweaking phase for these last 30 days. So for the next 30 days – tell us what YOU think and by all means hold us accountable. Because that’s why we are here. For YOU Williamson County. Thanks for the opportunity to serve and provide a place for all that makes this place not #52 on my list, but by all definitions #1! Shelly shelly@yourwilliamson.com Your Publisher

On June 16th, The Park at Harlinsdale Farm was the site of the inaugural “Raise the Roofs” benefit hosted by Friends of Franklin Parks, LLC. Country band, Diamond Hitch, performed while guests bid on silent auction items and enjoyed great food and much needed cold drinks. The historic barn and the Hayes’ Farmhouse at Harlinsdale are both in need of new roofs to stop further deterioration of the structures that date back to the mid 20th century. Roofing the two main structures at the Park is expected to exceed funding budgeted by the City of Franklin. Friends of Franklin Parks, LLC, hopes to help in stopping the ravages of time on these structures through this event and pledges. To Paint or Paper...

That is the Question!

THINK PAPER! WALLPAPER I S BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER.

H

THE LOTZ HOUSE

ANYA LARKIN Sultan

by Chris Carlisle

Have you been busy picking out paint colors without considering other wall covering alternatives? When you think of wallpaper do you still envision velvet, flocked damask in avocado green and gold from the 60’s and 70’s? Do you assume wallpaper is old fashioned or a thing of the past? Well, it’s time to reconsider papering your walls once again. If you really take the time to see what’s on the market, you will discover that wallpaper has made a huge resurgence and is the hottest trend in wall covering today. Interior designers are using it all the time and the variety of fresh, stylish options are endless. Imagine your walls embellished with Swarovski Crystals, or a great room covered in hand stitched leather. For something really unique, consider metallic or beaded wallpaper. Your search for the perfect wallpaper could lead you to paper with sand effects, faux cork, rich embroidered patterns, geometric shapes, textured grass cloth, hand painted paper or colorful chinoiserie! Your options are limitless. I’m not opposed to paint. Nothing beats a fresh coat of paint, but I want you to think outside the box. You may have the perfect room with an accent wall to use as your focal point or a small powder room that calls for wallpaper. Perhaps your dining room has a long wall that could be covered in a mural of birds, brilliant flowers and spiraling ivy, or you could even paper your ceiling in gold or silver metallic. Gorgeous! To begin your search for the perfect paper check out Osborne & Little. I love the Sariskar Collection in “Maharani,” which depicts a pomegranate and grapevine trail in bold reds and purples. This pattern will offer a delightfully whimsical pattern to any wall. Two of my most favorite wallpaper lines are Fromental and Anya Larkin. Both lines offer exquisite wallpaper designs that I consider to be nothing less than magnificent works of art. I asked Anya Larkin recently, what trends we can expect this year and into 2013? Ms. Larkin shared, “silver leaf paper, which has been tinted, glazed and antiqued work with contemporary interiors, because they are toned down and subtle. Opalene paper is our most popular wallpaper and it interprets antique nickel and old silver. Old nickel has patina of age.” Ms. Larkin went on to say, “The use of silver and gold leaf was coveted in ancient times, because of its reflective quality.”

14

YOURWILLIAMSON.COM September 2012

Anya Larkin originals can be seen at Tiffany Stores all over the world. The stores feature Ms. Larkin’s Opalene paper, because it’s real silver-leaf and it works with the Tiffany design. Ms. Larkin’s wallpaper will be in Mexico, Japan, Brazil, Las Vegas and London stores. Anya Larkin is also featured at Chanel Boutiques. Pictured at ANYA LARKIN left and above, you will see a couple of my most favorite String of Pearls, Anya Larkin designs. Sandpiper Fromental’s original designs adorn some of the most prestigious properties across the globe. Fromental focuses on craftsmanship, which is essential to the elegance of their work. Pictured above, left, are some of my favorite Fromental designs in vibrant exhilarating colors! Lastly, I must make mention of a historical wallpaper re-furbishing project, completed about a year ago, in Franklin at The Lotz House Museum. J.T. Thompson, owner and executive director of The Lotz House, has painstakingly replicated the lovely English wallpaper in one of the bedrooms known as Matilda’s room, where Matilda Lotz stayed as a child. (See top, right.) Mr. Thompson carefully uncovered what is believed to be the original wallpaper and had “Cole & Sons” replicate it to the tune of $1500. per roll. Mr. Thompson, “J.T.”, said that there were 10-12 layers of wallpaper uncovered over a ten year period. The next wallpaper project will be the Music Room. The historical Lotz House Museum staff, independent researchers and J.T. Thompson continually strive to authentically represent one of the most important landmarks of the American Civil War and the Battle of Franklin. Tours are conducted daily and The Lotz House Museum continues to be one of the top attractions in all of Middle Tennessee. Please stop by for a visit and tour. The location is, The Lotz House Museum, 1111 Columbia Avenue, Franklin, TN., 37064. Phone: 615-790-7190. The Website: www.lotzhouse.com. I hope you will discover your favorite wallpaper to paper your world and make it perfectly pretty. Happy papering!

HOME PROFILE

FORGE SEAT

Living in history in Williamson County

Williamson County is full of beautiful old homes but few are as steeped in history as the Samuel Crockett House, also known as Forge Seat. This property in Brentwood, Tennessee was the home of Samuel Crockett, son of Andrew Crockett. Andrew Crocket received a 640 acre grant for Revolutionary War services. He built his first log home on the southeast side of what is now Brentwood in 1799. His son, Samuel Crockett, built a two-story brick home nearby, which was completed in 1808. The home became known as “Forge Seat” because of the iron forge located on the property. Samuel Crockett and his son, Andrew, made iron implements here and specialized in rifle making. Crockett’s rifles “were identified by their fine craftsmanship and the initials ‘S. & A. C.’ engraved on the barrels.” On his way to New Orleans and the Indian wars, Andrew Jackson stopped here and purchased rifles to arm his soldiers. Samuel and Andrew Crockett and other family members are buried in the cemetery nearby. The log building containing the forge and the seat of the stone forge itself still remain. There has been no other early blacksmith or forge site found in the county. That history has kept this lovely piece of property at the forefront of Brentwood and Williamson County’s colorful and cherished treasures. Forge Seat is one of the county’s most beloved landmarks . Built of Flemish bond, it stands in a wide shady lawn at the corner of Wilson Pike and Crockett Road. The floors are of white ash. Davy Crockett, the famed frontiers man who fought and died at the Alamo, once spent the nite under this historic roof. Today Forge Seat boasts more than just historical significance but also a carefully restored and maintained structure that now serves as a modern home for a modern family with the charm of the past. Complete with original brick (3 bricks thick), original hardwood flooring, guest quarters and a swimming pool, Forge Seat makes for a wonderful country estate only moments from the interstate and the Galleria! No doubt those who walked its halls and acres, could never have imagined it!

Southern Land Company’s Westhaven Town Center was created and designed as the cornerstone of the Westhaven community to provide its residents all the convenience of the traditional neighborhood design; a post World War II concept. This planning allows residents to live, shop and play all within the community. As Southern Land Company works to recreate the timeless character and charm of the traditional neighborhood, a quaint and legendary shop now calls Westhaven home. Freeman Flowers and Gifts is located at 188 Front Street in the Westhaven Town Center. Their story began in 1970 when Louie and Betty Freeman purchased an established Truett Floral Company, then located on Franklin Road. Truett Floral Company was originally established in the 1840’s and is thought to be the oldest floral company in Tennessee, while also being the first floral shop located south of the Ohio River. The Freeman’s purchased an abandoned gas station in 1973, and moved Freeman’s Flowers and Gifts’ operations there, located at the corner of First and East Main Street. Mr. Freeman trusted the business to Mrs. Freeman after that, as he was a nationally known speaker and traveled quite frequently prior to his death. Mrs. Freeman lived and breathed the business. “I brought the children there when they were babies and bedded them down near the displays,” said Mrs. Freeman. Family members continued to join the business over the years including Shea Freeman Patrick, a granddaughter to Mrs. Freeman, who runs the store’s operations today. In 2009, the Freeman’s building was sold, and they were forced to find a new home for Freeman’s Flowers and Gifts. They moved their business to the Westhaven Town Center, where they have melded their family’s business and traditions with the families and traditions being built each day at Westhaven. Mrs. Freeman now even lives in the Westhaven community, and at her ripe young age of 91, she spends days in the store, helping as needed, answering phones and making the store’s extraordinary flower arrangements. But most importantly, she’s simply there to greet patrons with a warm smile and a welcoming hand. The warmth and inviting nature of the store hasn’t changed since its inception in 1970. “We are so pleased to be here in Westhaven,” Freeman said. “This has been good for us.” The sense of family, friendship and community exists in all corners of this community. Freeman’s Flowers & Gifts is a store surrounded by love, family and hard work, which Mrs. Freeman has instilled in her family since day one. “She’s been my inspiration,” said Shea Freeman Patrick. “Continuing on her legacy is what I’m proud to do every day when I come to work; to continue what she began 40 years ago, when I was just a baby.” Freeman’s Flowers & Gifts embody the lifestyle of Westhaven and its residents…a warm smile and a friendly wave always greet, just like your neighbors and your family.

story & photography by Andrea Davis Inspired by a similar festival in Ithaca, New York, Westhaven held its inaugural Porchfest on June 16th. With so many musicians in the neighborhood, the festival was a way for neighbors to showcase their musical talents on ready-made “stages.” Bands, singers and instrumentalists from a wide variety of musical genres participated in the festival and residents volunteered their porches, as a way to support the local music scene and interact with their neighbors. Artists such as JoDee Messina, Darren Warren and Brea Lawrenson performed and the afternoon of music was wrapped up with an evening lakefront concert with the PawnShop Kings. Westhaven’s Porchfest hopes to become an annual event that is one day as successful as the original Porchfest in Ithaca. For more information, go to www.westhaventn.com/porchfest.

THE HERITAGE BALL

SERVES FARM TO TABLE MENU

F

story by Vicki Stout

For the second consecutive year, the 39th annual Heritage Ball, set for Saturday, September 22nd at the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park adjacent to Historic Carnton Plantation, is taking Williamson County’s agricultural heritage into account and planning a farm to table dinner for the black tie gala. “We are using local vendors and farmers for as much of the meal as possible,” says Angela Calhoun, design chair for the Ball. “Among those we’re working with are Real Food Farms, Delvin Farms, Kenny’s Kentucky Rose Cheese, Bloomsbury Farm and Spring Meadow, Allenbrooke Farms, Hatcher Dairy and Noble Springs Dairy.” The menu has been planned around fresh seasonal offerings and has come as a result of much time and effort by Calhoun, Dani Kates of Kates Catering and New York Times bestselling cookbook author Chuck White, who is also a personal chef and Franklin resident. “Farm to table meals and events are popular across the country, and with the amount of farming here in Williamson County, we well should be leading that parade,” said Calhoun. “The Farms of Williamson and our region are closely connected to preserving our sense of place and community character and therefore an integral part of celebrating our heritage,” says Heritage Foundation executive director Mary Pearce. Calhoun says the meal will be even more fabulous than last year’s farm to table multi course seated dinner. 26

Appetizers, which will be passed during the two-hour cocktail reception, include a specially made Noble Springs Dairy cheese, Harpeth Fleur, with fig marmalade on toast; a yellow heirloom gazpacho shooter with bourbon smoke salt and pepper on the rim and a homemade lamb sausage with pickled mustard seed en croute. The salad course offers an innovative and delicious baby heirloom tomatoes and arugula with cornbread and micro basil with a truffle vinaigrette. The beef entrée will be accompanied by Anson Mill’s creamy grits, sautéed cabbage and roasted heirloom baby carrots. The autumn inspired dessert is a divine sweet potato cheesecake with salted caramel in a gingersnap crust created by Kates especially for this event. Calhoun says the menu offers new culinary ideas, will be a delightful, creative dinner and very satisfying. “Many of our participating farmers attended last year’s Ball, and we anticipate them doing so again this year. It’s wonderful for them to come see what we’re doing with the fruits of their labors,” she said. The Heritage Ball begins at 6 p.m., featuring a cocktail hour prior to the seated dinner at 8 p.m. and dancing follows. Proceeds from the Ball benefit the Heritage Foundation. FASHI ONABLE YOU

WHAT TO WEAR

FASHION & STYLE

Heritage Ball The Heritage Foundation of Franklin & Williamson County will celebrate its 39th Annual Heritage Ball on September 22nd. This year’s Ball will be beautiful on the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park in Franklin and consist of a “vintage chic” style and theme with dusty roses and peacock blues. Jennifer Parker, who is chairing the Heritage Ball this year with her husband, Jamey, will be wearing a Prophetik gown for the event. Jeff Garner, owner of the eco-aware label Prophetik, has headlined the Fashion Weeks of London, Paris and Vancouver and more, becoming known not only for plant and earth based dyes and durable, sustainable fabrics, but also for a design sensibility that translates as well on the runway as on the rack. A film crew from The History Channel was in downtown Franklin earlier this month shooting Garner as part of a “40 Great American Artists Under 40” exhibit currently underway at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. His work was selected from among 2,500 artists around the nation, and will be featured on a television special in early 2013. Jennifer’s fitting was filmed as part of the television show. Garner says that, despite his worldwide success, Parker’s dress for this signature event is every bit as important. “This dress was made for the catwalk at London Fashion Week this year, but we’ve changed it a bit to make it special for her and for the Ball,” Garner said. Along with Jennifer, Heritage Foundation Ball volunteers Connie Haley, Mary Kate Brown, Kelly Harwood and Zane Martin showcase what to wear to the longest running black tie affair in Williamson County. With this year’s theme, one can have fun with the attire. Mary Kate wears a vintage style cream and rose embroidered tiered dress with a rose sash. Connie wears a classic ball gown with a gathered skirt for a more modern look and rose sash to incorporate this year’s theme. They both accentuate their dresses with vintage style rhinestone jewelry that complete the chic looks. Zane wears a classic tux, which is always the go-to look for men at the ball. One cannot go wrong with the sleek cuts now in the classic look. Kelly struts his stuff in a more formal, yet fun, tailed tux. He also includes a flash of peacock blue to create a statement. Let these ideas inspire your attire for this year’s ball. Thank you to Jeff Garner, Jessica McClintock of Cool Springs Galleria and Street Tuxedo of Cool Springs for styling. Also, thank you to Gallery 202 for providing the fantastic setting for our fashion shoot. 30

WITH ANDREA DAVIS Your Williamson’s gal about town for everything arts, culture & leisure

ART: Carpe Diem featuring Will Jordan It’s hard to believe, but my husband and I have lived in Franklin for almost ten years now. After visiting this wonderful town for the first time, I fell in love and knew I wanted to live and raise a family here. Looking back, I realize I had no idea how much I would really love it and the people I’ve met have played such a big part in that. In 2003, not long after settling in, I was introduced to Franklin native, Will Jordan. We instantly bonded through all of our artistic commonalities. Will is a photographer, a journalist, a musician and one of the most creative people I have ever known. The walls of his home are covered in his photography and I have found myself many times stopping and admiring all that he has captured. Will is the type of person that can look at anything and see art. He can take an old pair of shoes, a rusted piece of metal, a dirty street…anything… and turn it into something beautiful. To say he has an “eye for art” would be an understatement. He has an unbelievable talent and I am happy to say that there is now a place you can go and experience it for yourself. Will has opened a boutique gallery called “Carpe Diem” at 212 South Margin Street in Franklin. The gallery’s location, formerly Scarlett Scales, is a perfect addition to the area that has always been the antique district but is quickly becoming the art district, as well. I’ve been fortunate enough to see the gallery come to life from bare walls to what it is now. Walking through the doors is like getting a glimpse into Will’s mind. It’s an explosion of art and music and love- love for the community of other artists, art enthusiasts and really anyone that’s a part of his life. Will has a big heart, a kind spirit and many adoring fans who are just as excited as I am about his new venture. The art is an eclectic mix of Will’s experiences over the last fifteen years. He doesn’t limit himself to one subject, but he says he prefers promo shots for bands, album covers and individual portraiture. I asked Will what his favorite place to shoot was, but I was pretty sure I already knew the answer. I did. Will goes to Bonnaroo every year and comes back with the most incredible photos. You’ve probably seen some of them hanging in Kimbros Cafe and The Mellow Mushroom in downtown Franklin. In addition to Will’s art, the “shotgun shack” gallery also houses Lee Hall custom furniture, Justin Martin vintage motorcycle helmets and artwork, John Baugh custom leather accessories, Tod Brakebill custom ammo boxes and pic boxes, Beverly Ford Evans abstracts, Greg Bennet guitars and many others. Will has also started Vagabond Clothing Company, which contributes to the “boutique” part of the gallery, along with WeWOOD watches, Tawapa body jewelry, Dragon sunglasses and more. Brandon and Kate Hagan are partnering with Will as owners and will be contributing their art as well. They all want to support as many local artists as they can and will even be hosting cd release parties for area musicians. Carpe Diem encompasses so much of what Franklin is about. It’s unique. It’s beautiful. It’s unlike any other. Will Jordan has created a space that allows him to further unleash his talent in our community and inspire others to do the same. Just when I think Franklin can’t get any better, I now have a new reason on my list of why I love this town. Carpe Diem. 34

THEATER: The Nutty Professor

Working for this publication for the past several months has allowed me to be a part of so many exciting things going on in our area. Someone recently read my last column and said, “Wow, you are really living life!” Well, I couldn’t agree more and the subject of this particular story is a great example. First let me say that I am a Broadway junkie. I could go to New York City and see shows all day everyday for a week, especially the musicals, and never get tired of it. The back of my “I heart New York” t-shirt should say “Thanks to Broadway!” Therefore, on July 11th, I had one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. I was invited to the Media Day for The Nutty Professor at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC). If you didn’t know while it was open, let me get you up to speed. “The King of Comedy” Jerry Lewis directed the new musical “The Nutty Professor” based on his 1963 hit movie. Before a show hits Broadway, it has to be previewed somewhere else to determine if it’s worthy and to test it out in front of an audience. TPAC is one of the few facilities in the country that can provide all that is needed to create a Broadway musical from the ground up. Collaborating with the now late Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line), winner of Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, for the music and three-time Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) for the book and lyrics, Lewis is very hopeful that the musical will open on Broadway next year. When I arrived at the TPAC for media day, I was still in disbelief that I got to be a part of something so spectacular. It was very surreal, and I kept telling myself to soak all of it in and not take one moment for granted. It all started with a press conference with Jerry Lewis (Director), Rupert Holmes (Book and Lyrics), Michael Andrew (Professor Julius Kelp/Buddy Love), Marissa McGowan (Stella Purdy), JoAnn Hunter (Choreographer) and Ray Roderick (Assistant Director). I really didn’t know what to expect from Mr. Lewis. When I found out he was directing at 86 years old, I was a bit shocked. However, he was still as funny as ever and definitely on his game. When asked, “Why Nashville?” Lewis responded by saying, “Nobody else would take us!” After we all had a good laugh he went on to explain that Nashville is a hot bed for theater. People here are “theatergoers” and this is the type of audience needed. He said, “Nashville itself sounds theatrical.” He was so passionate about the musical and said that the cast has more talent than anyone he has ever seen. For someone that has been performing for over 79 years, that was quite a bold statement, but he stands by his word, especially concerning Michael Andrew. Andrew says that playing the part of Julius and Buddy has been a dream of his since he saw the movie for the first time at nine years old. He was really into magic and thought that Lewis’ ability to change from Julius to Buddy was the best magic trick he had ever witnessed. From that day on, he wanted to be an actor and, more specifically, play that role. Lewis says that the name Michael Andrew will spread like wildfire after the first show. After getting to see the set, another part of the Media Day was attending a rehearsal. This was definitely the best part. The rehearsal room was a lot smaller than I thought it would be, which made it even better. The actors were literally a few feet in front of me and Mr. Lewis was just a few feet to my right. The rehearsal was amazing. The performances were definitely all that had been described and watching Jerry Lewis direct was unbelievable. I was astonished at Michael Andrew’s ability to portray two completely different people with seconds between one character to the other, and Marissa McGowan’s voice was flawless. The only bad part about it was not getting to see the whole thing! When opening night finally came, I have never been so excited to see a performance. I was already so invested in the actors and all that had happened to make the show possible so seeing it come to life was incredible. Jerry Lewis was spot on about Michael Andrew and Marissa McGowan’s voice was again, flawless. I even got to tell her that in person at the cast party! It was all such a great experience and I am very hopeful that the show will make it to Broadway. I will definitely be on a plane to NYC to see it again, except this time my t-shirt will say, “I’m from Nashville, where it all began!”

MUSIC: Pearl Clarkin

When I told a friend of mine that I would be writing the Arts and Culture column, she recommended that I meet a young singer by the name of Pearl Clarkin. She spoke very highly of Pearl and said she had something special. So, of course, I had to see it for myself. Before meeting Pearl, I searched the Internet to see what she was all about. I would describe what I saw as a beautiful girl with lots of confidence and a zest for life. Upon meeting her, I would definitely add to that list kind, humble and determined. Pearl says she wrote her first song “Even Though I Want To” at the age of twelve with Macy Gray at an American Idol camp. She was chosen to be in the finale of the camp and the camp director told Pearl’s mom that she had it all. At age fourteen, Pearl recorded the song and made a video. Pearl’s parents moved her from Pensacola, Florida to Nashville for professional training. On her second day in town, CMT called wanting her to be in a songwriter contest. Things started happening really fast for Pearl and she says, “It just got crazy.” She moved back to Pensacola to live a normal life for a while. Now seventeen and living in Brentwood, Pearl is back on track and headed in the right direction. She has been working with Cowboy Troy at AStar Promotions and has opened for Charlie Daniels and Zac Brown Band. She will also be opening for Montgomery Gentry in the fall. She’s been seen around Nashville on stage at the Hard Rock Café’, Just Kickin’, and she performed at the CMA Fest. With all that she’s done in such a few short years, Pearl knows she is still learning and has a lot more to experience. As I was interviewing her, she had a lot of questions for me about my experience in the Nashville music scene. My advice to Pearl and anyone in this crazy business is to take good care of yourself, find musicians you can rely on and get along with and don’t let anyone take advantage of you. I hope Pearl listens to my advice. I will be following her and wishing her the best in her career!

CHARITABLE SELF

‘Catch Me If You Can’ Inspires High-Flying Fun The opening of the upcoming season at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and the distinguished contributions of John Ferguson to the arts, were celebrated in August at TPAC’s annual gala. Inspired by the hit movie and Broadway show ‘Catch Me If You Can,’ this year’s benefit for the art center’s educational and cultural programs featured a stylish 1960’s atmosphere. Guests were invited to get on board with Pan American World Airlines, travelling back to the golden era of flight when the term “jet set” was coined and national culture was on the cusp of dramatic change. John Ferguson’s service to the community has been as rich and varied as his successful career that has spanned finance, entrepreneurial ventures, corporate turnarounds and government experience. In addition to his personal giving with his wife Carole, he helped facilitate corporate gifts to TPAC Education’s curriculum-based programs and other non-profit organizations. “John is widely admired and respected for his level of community involvement in Nashville and Tennessee. His generosity, leadership, and commitment—personally and professionally—have had

a profound positive impact on the growth and vitality of the performing arts in Nashville and Tennessee. At TPAC, for instance, his support has meant that tens of thousands of school children took part in our education program at no cost to them,” said Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC’s president and chief executive officer. Bringing arts and music, dance and drama to Nashville and all of middle Tennessee, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center administers one of the most comprehensive, curriculum-based arts-in-education programs in the United States, offering a variety of learning opportunities for children and adults. Bringing students to TPAC for performances, providing teachers with resources, and sending artists to schools, TPAC Education has served more than 1.5 million students from pre-school to high school over the past 27 years. The five distinct programs of TPAC Education are ArtSmart, Disney Musicals in Schools, Humanities Outreach in Tennessee, TPAC InsideOut, and Wolf Trap Early Learning for the Arts. Since 1980, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center has welcomed more than 11 million audience members. TPAC serves several hundred thousand audience members each year with the annual series of Broadway shows, a variety of special engagements, and the productions of the three resident artistic companies—Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera and Tennessee Repertory Theatre.

A LITTLE BIT OF BRITAIN IN COOL SPRINGS Chris and Jane Hartland relocated from the United Kingdom to the United States, with their two young children, at the end of 2008. Up until this point, Chris had served as an Infantry soldier in the British Army for twelve years and was deployed operationally four times, including deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. The couple decided to relocate to Franklin, Tennessee having purchased a failing restaurant called Guido’s New York Pizzas. So, recognizing existing successes, such as the thin crust New York style pizzas, the couple successfully established Cool Springs Brewery, Williamson County’s first Microbrewery. Twelve months later, Cool Springs Brewery was offering the best craft brew in town. Within days of the Brewery’s opening, beer sales skyrocketed! Chris says, “We wanted to create almost an English type pub atmosphere, where everyone knows your name and you feel at home, not just a number on the corporate report. We both work at the Brewery and you will see us there working and welcoming our friends and customers daily.” At the beginning of 2012, following their original Brewmasters move to pastures new, Cool Springs Brewery was delighted to welcome Derrick Morse to the team, a Brewmaster all the way from the beer capital of the USA, Boulder Colorado. Chris and Jane continue to upgrade the menu and, along with New York style pizza, pasta, burgers and a fresh and varied lunch buffet, Cool Springs Brewery also offers arguably some of the best wings around. You will find on the menu the most amazing English Fish & Chips you will have seen or tasted; Described by the Nashville Scene as “the Holy Grail and the best Fish and Chips in Nashville!’ Coming soon will be other favorite traditional English dishes such as shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash with onion gravy, both of which will be made with family recipes from England. This year, Cool Springs Brewery purchased the NFL Sunday Ticket. In addition to offering beer and food specials, you can enjoy your favourite teams on numerous TV’s including the monstrous 117” big screen. So if you are tired of the big chain places and want somewhere with an authentic pub atmosphere, Cool Springs Brewery could be the best kept secret in Cool Springs! Take advantage of a daily ‘Happy Hour’ at Cool Springs Brewery from 4pm until 7pm and enjoy great prices on craft drafts, non craft drafts, wines and selected liquors. Additionally and in recognition of the armed forces and emergency services, Chris and Jane offer a 15% discount on food to all armed, police and fire services. The Men of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in downtown Franklin, recently held their 52nd annual cookout, silent auction and bake sale on the grounds of the historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The menu included finger licking barbeque chicken, scrumptious side dishes, mouth watering hoe cakes and award winning home baked goods for desert. The silent auction items were many. It was a fabulous family fun event that actually started a little early as the Men of St. Paul’s joined the fun festivities of Bluegrass Along the Harpeth Fiddler’s Jamboree this year serving burgers around the square the evening before their annual cookout. Proceeds from this event help support St. Paul’s ministries and outreach programs, as well as many charitable organizations.

HOSP I TABLE YOU

Southern Soiree

PARTY & EVENT PLANNING

Make Your Wedding YOURS

Y

by Lauren Hartman and Krista Cook

Your wedding day should be the ultimate reflection of you and your fiancé! However, sometimes it can be hard to see beyond the “oh-so-trendy” bridal inspiration blogs and bring the focus back to the two starring characters. Here are some ideas on how to make it exclusively yours.

56

1

The personalization can be incorporated in unexpected ways and may even be as big as the venue! Perhaps there’s a place that’s special to you, like your family’s farm or where you had your first date or got engaged, like a park or restaurant. Did you share your first pucker somewhere magical? Why not let this be where you lock lips for the first time as husband & wife?

2

Do you prefer a formal dinner party feel or a more casual vibe? The set up of the reception can actually tell your guests quite a bit about you. Using long rectangular tables gives an intimate dinner party feel. Want your guests to get up & mosey around instead of going for that second trip to the buffet? Try using lots of cocktail tables with lounge furniture and fewer seated tables to encourage people to move and head to the dance floor.

3

Programs are a great way to personalize too! Use a fun font, color, or shape to mix it up. Think outside the box and showcase you and your fiancé with “He and She” fans where you each write little known facts about one another on opposite sides of the fan. Want to provide even more mental stimulation for your patient guests? Try adding something interactive such as “What Tree Did You Fall From?” This Celtic form of astrology allows your guests to discover, based on their birthday, which tree they are, along with a list of personality traits. Get creative; the catchy prelude music will only keep them entertained for so long.

4

The food that you serve is also super easy to personalize. If you and your fiancé love noshing on cheeseburgers, have mini cheeseburger sliders on the menu. Want to celebrate being southern? Try a macaroni and cheese bar with yummy add-ins or a cultural favorite such as shrimp and grits. Think of your wedding as if you were having all your friends over for dinner…what would you serve?

5

Personal flair perhaps can be shown the easiest through attire. Are you preppy? Have your girls wear seersucker dresses and fun shoes! Love vintage? Guys in suspenders and bow ties look great! Don’t forget the super cute flower girls and ring bearers. They can pull off more adventurous options without jeopardizing the integrity of your wedding party.

6

Who doesn’t love a fun round of bocce ball? If you and your fiancé enjoy games and are going for an outdoor casual feel, set up a designated area for activities such as cornhole, horseshoes or even a dartboard during your cocktail hour! This gives guests something to do & encourages conversation.

Always remember what’s most important during the whirlwind of planning your wedding; it’s simply that your day be what you want. COMMUNITY PARTNER

Caroline Cross A TRUE AMBASSADOR OF WILLIAMSON COUNTY photo by Anita Blake

T

There are many people in our community who we can look at in admiration for their ongoing efforts and contributions to the activities and people around them. Among them in Williamson County is Caroline Cross. For those who don’t have the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Cross personally, there are many of her “children” in important and prestigious positions of government, business and community here in Williamson County. That is, her so called children and graduates of Leadership Franklin, the leadership program she helped found here and has run, as a volunteer Executive Director for over 15 years. Mrs. Cross grew up in Smyrna, Tennessee in a family that loved Tennessee Walking Horses and moved to Williamson County in 1959. Mrs. Cross states that she never knew what she really thought about what she would do for a career. And she eventually partnered with her husband, James, in their business, Century Construction, which began in 1958. She remained involved until the time of his passing in 1993. Caroline’s son, Jim, now runs Century Construction Caroline and her husband always had a love for non profits and helping the community. Caroline started getting truly involved in non profits in the 90’s and began Leadership in 1996 with the founding board members Richard Harrington, Julian Bibb, Gayle Harris and Jim Cross. They agreed that what Leadership Nashville had done for those who had completed the program, was so beneficial that Franklin needed a Leadership class, as well. The first class in 1996 had a class of sixteen people. Leadership Franklin’s goal was to educate residents in Franklin and Williamson County on their community so that they could become or be better leaders of the community. The program at its core encourages an interest in and knowledge of your community as well as involvement with local organizations and businesses in order to be successful. There is a very rich history and thriving life force 58

YOURWILLIAMSON.COM September 2012

in Williamson County that Leadership Franklin communicates to their classes each year, teaching them how to be more in tune with the local efforts and revitalization. With class starting in September and graduating in April, Caroline made sure that every class each year consisted of people of various work fields. Participants enjoy field trips to local businesses and sites learning about them and how they make their mark in Middle Tennessee. Caroline’s mission with Leadership Franklin has become more and more appreciated over the past 16 years and the classes have grown to twenty, which she says about the maximum number they prefer. Caroline Cross keeps herself busy with her involvement in local charities and organizations. She has served as executive director of Franklin Tomorrow, a lead member of the Williamson County Library Foundation, the Columbia State Foundation Board for the new campus, the Heritage Foundation, the Franklin Rotary and Rodeo, antique shows and is a member of the Heritage Church of Christ. She travels all over the world still and continues to learn. Mrs. Cross has made a positive impression on all those she has met and she most certainly is an inspiration to so many. She not only has an intriguing philanthropic life, but when asked what one thing that people may not know about Caroline Cross would be, she simply responded, “I have been sports fishing since I was sixteen years old and I can catch the big tarpon.” This woman has amazing stories that could fill chapters. And have. Learn more about this wonderful and interesting lady and a true example of someone who has lived giving back to her community, in her autobiography – “A Delightful Life,” which could not be more aptly named.

Caroline Cross was honored for her relentless dedication to making Franklin a place that people are proud to call home. Her vision for the community was so strong that she volunteered as the Executive Director of Leadership Franklin and helped to launch the program. It was her volunteer position as Director, for 16 years, that exemplified her commitment to making Franklin the best place to live and work. Many friends, dignitaries and community leaders attended the dinner at the Embassy Suites to pay tribute to a woman who saw her vision become a reality and to wish her the best upon her retirement. Thank you Mrs. Cross for helping make Franklin what it is today.

story & photography by K York The African American Heritage Society hosted their eighth Annual Juneteenth Celebration at the McLemore House Museum in Franklin. It was a delightful day to hold a celebration reflecting and remembering the move from slavery to freedom that began 150 years ago. The music, the art, the historical artifacts and storytelling, reflected the journey of local families and how the move impacted their lives. The sharing was powerful and sacred and the music and the games were playful and fun. Great food, lots of laughter and so much pride made the best combination for a real back yard celebration. It was an eventful day for all!

FINANCE

YOUR BEST INTEREST

Voyage of a Lifetime By Joseph G. Budd, Managing Partner, CFP®, ChFC®

When you are planning a trip that spans at least a week, you usually plan ahead. When the pilgrims came to America, they had more planning to do in addition to risking their lives. There are many similarities to a long voyage and planning and investing for your families goals. Think about the rough seas going up and down throwing a ship around as they do at random. This very much reminds me of the day to day news du jour that sends the markets up and down each day. Both can make you nervous and sick at times if you let them get to you. Short term movements are very seldom indicative of what’s ahead in the long term though on your journey. Just like the four seasons can bring different storms on the seas with unique challenges, there are economic seasons as well. The Summer drought ends with hurricane season. This, of course, is followed by Fall with the mold from the falling leaves for our allergies. Then, a bone-chilling Winter sets in while plants and animals rest and we get to do some creative driving occasionally. Contrast this with the economic seasons of: recovery, expansion, prosperity and recession - The last one being the most vivid in our minds. At times it is much easier to tell what season we are in than in which economic cycle. Sometimes the economic fog is tough to see through. Any good captain will have charts and a course set to get you to your destination. They know to anticipate some areas of the voyage that will pose some additional challenges than others. That sounds a lot like an investment plan that guides the course of action for investing in the first place. Supplies are needed for the trip, such as fuel, food and water. Families need income that that lasts throughout their retirement. We can estimate how long a trip may take, but a life span is hard to predict. Might as well plan for the life expectancy swabby! If your ship is heading into a headwind, it will take more effort and time to get to where you are going. Think about the effects of a pension over the course of 10 years. If just doesn’t buy what it used to. Decisions need to be made to redirect the ship to maintain purchasing power along the entire journey, not just at the middle of the journey. How much was that car you bought new ten years ago? So when going on an extended trip, a trip of a lifetime, plan ahead. Be prepared for changes you can’t predict but anticipate them. Be ready for the seasons changing, the wind, sun, rain and most of all, enjoy the ride. It is the only one you will get. Ahoy there . . . story & photography by K York Leiper’s Fork is a community that knows how to have fun and Dancin’ in the Fork is one of the many events everyone enjoys. People come with their lawn chairs and blankets, some with picnic baskets and, of course, their kids in tow to enjoy kickin’ up their heels Dancin’ in the Fork. The Cajun swamp-pop band, L’Angelus, performed at the Lawnchair Theatre with special guests The Hog Slop String Band, along with Leiper’s Fork favorite duet, 2 Country 4 Nashville. You don’t want to miss the next event because it’s always the best of times in the Fork!

FROM OUR TABLE TO YOURS

The Chef and I

FOOD & DRINK

Music to Your Mouth:

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MUSIC AND FOOD IS DELICIOUS.

W

by Erica Rains and Executive Chef Chris Rains

Williamson County is full of music. And food. We see the connection always, and it isn’t just because The Chef and I have both coursing through our veins. It’s apparent that the two go hand in hand around here, and when you pair them up, it sounds (and tastes) delicious. From the incredible musical entertainment at the Franklin Theater to the music in the vines at Arrington Vineyards, we are so lucky to live here in one of the most affluent and well-known counties in the country. When you throw a chef in the mix, he can’t help but find the synergy between food and music. WE’RE A L I TTLE B I T C OUNTRY

Recently we cooked this dish for clients and it was an incredible southern hit, straight from the syrupy slow cooked charm of the south and enjoyed by many at a rustic country wedding. Chef Chris Rains put a spin on a regular beef wellington:

MINI-BEEF WELLINGTONS WITH A COUNTRY TWIST Collard Greens and Goat Cheese Beef Wellingtons Take your families best recipe for collard greens and apply (if you need a recipe and help, call Chef Chris Rains directly at 615.305.4869. Now you’ve got your own chef on speed dial!-And he does share recipes any time you want. He can also come over and teach you alone, or you can have a group of friends learn as well-fun cooking lesson parties!)

For each mini beef wellington, you will need: Tablespoon of collard greens ½ oz. of seared beef tenderloin 1 tbsp. of goat cheese 2”x2” square of puff pastry (look in the dessert section of the frozen food aisle and find puff pastry sheets. They are near the pie crusts.) Layout your puff pastry sheets, and cut into 2 x 2 squares with a knife.

For your preparations:

- Cube your beef into ½ inch cubes, season in salt and pepper. Sear in a very hot pan about 15 seconds on each side. This is just enough to sear the outside, but the inside is still rare. You’ll be cooking it further in the pastry so you don’t want to overcook it during this step. - For each puff pastry square, place the goat cheese in the center, layer collard greens on top, and then top it with your seared beef tenderloin cube. - Now pull each corner of the puff pastry up to the middle until they all meet. This will create small holes between the four corners. Pull pastry up over the corners to complete the seal. - Place on an ungreased baking sheet with the seal facing down and brush the tops with egg yolk. - Bake in a 450 degree oven for 10-15 minutes depending on your oven until a golden brown color is achieved. - When done, let them rest for five minutes, then pop them in your mouth or put them out for your guests. Before you know it, everyone will be doing a tasty two-step.

WE’RE A L I TTLE B I T RO CK N’ ROLL We’ve been playing with injection needles. Don’t worry they’re filled with liquor, and they are injected into chocolate covered strawberries. The Chef and I started this phenomenon about four years ago, and it has really taken off. From national media coverage on GAC to showing up at many local weddings and fabulous parties, the Strawberry Injection Bar has really taken shape. We don’t condone the use of needles when drinking alcohol, and we are professionals. If you do want to try this at home, do it at your own risk-we can easily bring it to you and save you the trouble. First of all, we started with one liquor and started injecting it into hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries. The chef likes to use Ghirardelli due to the way it melts and really sticks to the strawberries without falling off completely after one bite. However we ‘ve also been talking to several fabulous local chocolatiers in Williamson County and are working with them to pair their amazing infused chocolates with our concept. The end result will be like a good guitar solo-rich and delicious. We use a few choice liquors, and it does kind of feel like a rock band. Each liquor has it’s own distinct characteristic when injected into these insane desserts, and we might just hit the road for a world tour.

THE DRUMMER: This guy loves to sit back and be the favorite. He’s Godiva Chocolate Liquor. THE BASSIST: Too cool – he screams Kahlua. THE GUITARIST: In your face and a little sweet – Red Stag by Jim Beam. With the chocolate, totally divine.

THE LEAD SINGER: A bit of a trouble maker – Jack Daniels. This is surprising…just wait. We use other liquors as well, and for those that don’t do alcohol, the strawberries themselves are local, fresh, ripe and incredible with that rich creamy chocolate. Yes, you will need a napkin. Want to know more about the Strawberry Injection Bar? Visit www.thechefandicatering.com or call the chef (you should have him on speed dial by now: see at left.)
