For unto you is born this day in the cit y of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord Dear Readers, We hope you enjoy this Christmas card of a publication from all of us here at Your Williamson. As we do every year, we have tried to fill this issue with as much holiday spirit and Christmas cheer as possible! There is so much to do and see this festive time of year and hopefully, you and yours, will find plenty of ideas here to plan and enjoy a fabulous season. While we celebrate and run from party to party, shop til we drop and imbibe and indulge in all myriad of ways - remember the reason for the season too. Whether as the Angel proclaimed - “For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord; or as The Sun editor tells Virginia - “ Not believe? The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.” This is truly a season of magic and love and peace. Rejoice and celebrate that in all you do. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Shelly Robertson Birdsong and all of us here at Your Williamson
MY YEARLY TRADITION OF SHARING A FAVORITE CHRISTMAS LETTER - ENJOY! Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial September 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies and other editorials, and on posters and stamps. DEAR EDITOR: I am eight years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would
be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

2019 Beautiful You Gift Guide
Shop Clean. Shop Sustainable. Shop Local.
It really is the most wonderful time of the year! I cannot think of a better way to get into the holiday spirit than bundling up, grabbing a warm drink from Merridee’s, and strolling up and down Franklin’s historic Main Street. If I didn’t know better, I’d think I was walking on the set of a Hallmark Christmas movie. The charming storefronts are decorated with the colors of the season, child-size nutcrackers stand at attention outside Gray’s, and holiday music fills the air. From the glow of “NOEL” atop the White’s Building to the twinkling lights on the Square, there’s no mistaking that the holidays are officially here. Do you still have a few names to check off of your list? No need to stress! Whether it’s a last-minute hostess gift or something unique for that special someone, close your laptop, grab your coat, and head to Main Street. ’Tis the season of giving, so why not support the independent shops that make our town so special. It’s the perfect time of year to be a conscious consumer and support businesses having a positive impact on human health, the environment, and the world. What better way to gift those we know and love than with a gift that keeps on giving! Instead of purchasing just any old gift, we have an opportunity every single day to invest our money in companies committed to giving back. Certified B Corporations are companies that truly stand apart. "Meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability," B Corps use business as a force for good. Their bottom line? People, planet, then profit. A few of my personal favorite B Corps are ABLE, Allbirds, Apolis, Athleta, Beautycounter, Bombas, Dr. Bronner’s, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, and Patagonia. (You can find a full directory of Certified B Corporations at www.bcorporation.net.). From beauty products to accessories, here are just a few of the many gifts you can purchase right here in Franklin and feel good about giving! I hope you will join me this holiday season in supporting our local stores and investing in socially responsible companies that are making a change that you want to see in the world. 18 DECEMBER 2019
ABLE Mamuye Classic Tote in Cognac, $178 This is not the first or last time you will see this best-seller on a holiday gift guide. What makes this gorgeous cognac tote even more beautiful is the mission behind the company that creates it. With their headquarters and flagship store right here in Nashville, Certified B Corp ABLE “is an ethical fashion brand that employs and empowers women as a solution to end poverty.” I found it challenging to select just one ABLE gift for this list! I encourage you to check out their other fabulous bags, jewelry, and shoes at livefashionable.com.
Hearne Dry Goods Necklace, $95 This unique, boho-chic necklace with its signature nylon strap was created by Nashville jewelry designer, Leigh Hillenmeyer. Wanting her customers to “do good while looking good,” Leigh donates a portion of her proceeds to support a community health clinic in Lwala, Kenya, that provides clean water and other resources to children and their mothers. Check out her other fabulous goods here: hearnedrygoods.com Dry Bath Brush, $28 Looking for an affordable clean beauty gift? A dry body brush is a simple option with amazing health benefits. Best done before showering, drying brushing exfoliates the skin leaving it smooth and radiant. It also helps release toxins from one's body by stimulating the lymphatic system and increasing circulation. The health and wellness enthusiasts on your list will love it!
Herbivore Botanicals Soaking Salts, $22 Ethically sourced and sustainably harvested, every ingredient in Herbivore’s products have a therapeutic purpose. Key ingredients in the Calm Soaking Salts exfoliate and moisturize the skin while the calming aroma of ylang-ylang and chamomile helps to relieve tension. The Detox Soaking Salts contain invigorating eucalyptus essential oil and Cambrian Blue Clay that balances the skin and draws out impurities.
Apolis “Franklin Tennessee USA” Market Bag, $68 Go ahead and buy two of these bags... one for them and one for you! This durable, 100% jute bag with leather straps has a waterproof lining and can hold up to 100 pounds, making it the perfect beach, farmer’s market, or everyday tote. A proud B Corp, Apolis was founded on the “simple idea that people can live better lives when they are given equal access to the global marketplace.” Through sales of this handcrafted tote, Apolis has been able to provide Fair Trade wages and sustainable work to mothers in Bangladesh. To learn more go to: apolisglobal.com.
Goop G.Tox 5 Salt Detox Body Scrub, $40 A must-have from Gwyneth Paltrow’s non-toxic beauty brand, this body scrub is loaded with mineral-rich salts and moisturizing essential oils that exfoliate the skin, lock in moisture, and leave skin “velvety-smooth” and smelling divine. Ranger Station Soy Candle to Cocktail, $36 There’s no shortage of 100% soy candles on Main Street. Why choose soy? Soy wax is biodegradable, making it a cleaner choice for the environment. This Nashville company creates vibrantly scented candles in weighted whiskey glasses, resulting in a reusable, collectible gift. Committed to changing lives, Ranger Station employs the women of Thistle Farms, whose mission is to “heal, empower, and employ women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction.”
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Gift Card Less than a mile from Main Street is the Factory at Franklin. There you will find one of the best ice cream spots in town. Grab a gift card from this B Corp and then do yourself a favor…treat yourself to a scoop of Brambleberry Crisp while you're there. Holiday Style BY EMILY GOODIN OF EFFORTLESS STYLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY WEATHERLY PHOTOGRAPHY
The holidays are finally here! The hustle and bustle of this time of year is exciting! And with so many holiday parties and gatherings coming up, you’ve got to find something to wear to each event! Deciding what’s appropriate for the occasion as well as finding pieces that flatter the body can be a challenge. However, I’m here to help with some tips and tricks for finding the perfect look for every holiday occasion. First things first - the trends! This year there are several notable holiday style trends:
“Over-the-top” Glam!
For those who just can’t decide which glamorous piece to wear, then over-the-top glam is a perfect choice for you! Fur, sequins, pearls and diamonds...wear them all! To pull off an overthe-top look, choose a color palate and stick to it. Mix fabrics, textures and bold accessories within that color scheme. Keep hair and makeup simple and clean to provide balance to your overall style.
Jumpsuits
20 DECEMBER 2019
Jumpsuits can allow you to feel comfortable, yet stylish. However, fit is key! Think about a perfect fitting pant - that’s how the lower half of your jumpsuit should fit. No gaping, pulling, stretching or tugging. If that is happening then you have the wrong jumpsuit for your body type. It’s all about trying on several jumpsuits before you find the right one. As far as the top, it should fit against your body without blousing, unless that is part of the style of that particular design. The middle of the jumpsuit should fit at your natural waist. Often, there will be a belt attached. Make sure the belt (or tie) covers the waist seam. If the pant leg of the suit is a wide leg, the hem of your pants should skim the floor. If the hem is a jogger style, the cuff should fit around your ankle. Pair the jogger jumper with a strappy or pointed toe heel.
Velvet
The holidays start ‘The Season of Velvet’! Whether it be a top, pant, dress or jumpsuit, velvet is a go-to when it comes to being on trend and feeling festive. I’ve chosen several pieces that include velvet in my holiday style collection. This chic, off-the-shoulder dress that Arlena is wearing would be ideal for an office Christmas party. The jumpsuit, as we’ve mentioned is a comfortable, yet beautiful choice for a cocktail party or an in-home dinner party.
The Pant Suit
The pant suit is all the rage in formal and cocktail attire! I’ve chosen a version of a suit look with a velvet wide leg, velvet pants paired with a metallic top and blazer. For this look, celebrity hair stylist, Genia Church suggests hair up. With this metallic gold, makeup artist, Faith Tramp, suggests a bold, dark lip with a simple eye or a metallic, smokey eye and a neutral lip.
Sparkle with an Edge If you haven’t noticed, leather leggings have been “a thing” for several seasons now. They continue to be a popular choice with unique textures and colors. Pair your edgy, leather leggings with a sequin or sparkly top and boot and you’ll have the perfect festive outfit for that holiday happy hour!

LIFESTYLE | Fashionable You
Holiday Style for Men Men’s styles for holiday range from a fitted, colorful suit to a more traditional, casual layered look. For the modern suit, add some personality by choosing a button-up with a quirky graphic, such as this Scottie dog shirt shown on our model, Colten. I opted for an open collar (no-tie) and pocket square to finish off his suit style. If you’re attending (or hosting) a dinner party at home, choose a layered look in a more casual fabric such as this courdoroy blazer and pant. I styled our model, Josh, in a white button-up, a lightweight sweater and a plaid scarf. He looks put-together yet casual. I chose muted holiday colors - deep green and maroon sweater so that he is modestly festive!
No Jeans
For your holiday parties, stay away from your everyday jean. Although it seems to be a great casual choice, I challenge men and women to try a great fitting pant instead. Level up this season and I promise, you’ll get compliments! 22 DECEMBER 2019
tips & tricks Undergarments
Ladies << it’s all about that base! Find a bodysuit or one piece that has all the support you need. If you’re fumbling with several items underneath, you will find that adjusting them will be part of your evening. If you’re wearing a strappy shoe, you’ll want to go with a bare leg. That can be scary to some. There are several leg makeup brands that will smoothe and tone without stepping in the gym. If you’re wearing a closed toe shoe, you can choose shimmer, nude or black tights. Men >> your undergarments are usually more simplistic. However, I have many male clients who enjoy an undershirt with some hold. It will create a leaner line under fitted dress shirts. You can find these undershirts with medium and firm hold. For your socks, choose a complimentary, patterned sock for your outfit. Solid is always a given, but I challenge you to add a little personality to your feet!
Hair and Makeup
Hairstyles and makeup choices should balance your outfit. When wearing a statement outfit, choose a simple up-do or sleek ponytail. When your outfit is simplistic, you could do an intricate hairstyle to add interest to your look. The rules are the same for makeup. If the outfit is bold, choose clean and beautiful makeup. If the look is more understated, you can go bold with the eye or lip color...but not both.
{ CHALLENGE }
Try something new this season! If you normally wear a dress to the Christmas party, switch it up this year with a pant suit! If you’re normally in jeans and a sweater, try my suggestion for the Sparkle with an Edge trend! Whatever you choose for your holiday look this year, make sure it has personality! Have fun with your fashion! Cheers to a stylish NEW YOU!

Slow Down the December Dash
How do I approach the holidays with a healthy pace for the most enjoyment? BY LAURA BETH PETERS AND LAINIE STUBBLEFIELD
You can’t do everything and you can’t be all things for all people. So, taking time to have some conversations with your family and/or circle of friends, an intentionality of opportunity will set you up for success. Let go of unrealistic expectations that Hollywood and Instagram have put in our heads and you can find delight in each day of the season.
Mindfulness and Reflection- Most importantly, ponder what you are
celebrating. What are your values and how is the season going to be reflective of those values? How is your health and the health of your family and friends? Will there need to be changes made this year around health? Have there been significant changes this year with adding/losing family members? Any job changes that might affect the budgeting? Questions like these are going to help in your planning.
Prioritizing- What activities do you enjoy the most? What is important to your
spouse, children, and friends? What do you want your children to focus on this season? Start your plan by including those activities on the calendar. Have a discussion about these things. You may be surprised at some answers that you receive.
Stick to your budget and let comparison go- Love does not equal
amount of money spent. In fact, some of the most memorable gifts are the creative ones that don’t cost much money. Debt is so stressful that it is sure to rob you of the joy and peace that this season is all about! Keep going back to your values and what you are celebrating as you consider these things and which ones you will be able to include. Keep in mind the money required for any service projects and take that out of the total budget too.
Planning the Calendar- You already have the most important activities on the calendar after the mindfulness and reflection conversation. So, now consider the things you would like to say yes to and the things you will need to say no to in order to savor the season. Continue to look at possibilities through the lens of your values and goals for the season. Make sure to consider the time it will take for each activity including the shopping, cleaning before and after, cooking and decorating. Do you have to travel during the season? How can you best prepare and not over commit around your travel to make it most enjoyable?
Build in time for rest- Schedule times of rest scattered throughout the
calendar and plan for time alone and with family to appreciate the meaning of the season. If you rely on your faith, read the Scriptures and commentaries to get further revelation. Advent is the season leading up to Christ’s birth. There is an acknowledgment of anticipation of His coming. There are many books that will walk you through daily readings that can help keep your focus on what the celebrations are all about. Reading by candlelight and with a special, warm drink may enhance your enjoyment of the season. Another beautiful expression that can cause deep reflection is to attend a church music event or celebration. LAURA BETH PETERS & LAINIE STUBBLEFIELD Steel Magnolias Podcast

Cooking in Style Happy holidays from your Haute Hostess! In this month’s issue, we celebrate all things holiday. And what could be more holiday than my line of Haute Hostess Aprons? I was inspired to create the Haute Hostess Apron line after finding my grandmother’s holiday apron among the family’s treasures. I always adored them. She and my Mother were the consummate southern hostesses, and loved answering the door on Christmas Day in these beautiful netted aprons with gold rickrack and gold bells on the tips of the sashes that tinkled when they walked in their crocodile high heels. They wore the aprons over their chic sheath dresses and sometimes a cocktail dress, on New Year’s Eve. Those aprons from my childhood days were the inspiration from which evolved the collections of Haute Hostess Aprons. Now the company is celebrating its ninth year in business.
Since Elizabeth is the most fabulous of holiday hostesses – we decided to turn the tables and the interview questions on her as well for this issue! YW: What are your holiday party tips? ES: I use only unscented candles on my dinner table and throughout my home with the exception of my entry hall and bathrooms. Also, I change my light bulbs to pink and amber. I hire a professional bartender and DJ, plus I bring on my own glam squad, so I don’t have to leave my home to get party ready. I love to cook, but I don’t sweat the small stuff. If I don’t have time to make the dessert, I order it. YW: What is your favorite holiday cocktail? ES: The Poinsettia in a perfect crystal coupe’, made with 1 oz. Cointreau, 1 oz. cranberry juice, and champagne to fill the glass, garnished with pomegranate arils. YW: Which five fashion items are on your holiday haute list? ES: I have to have seven: A little black cashmere cardigan, black strappy diamanté four inch sandals, a fabulous evening gown, a chic black cocktail dress, an ink green faux fur stole, black cashmere slacks, plus pearl and diamond earrings will take you everywhere. YW: Do you have a new take on holiday appetizer? ES: They should be tres’ chic. Delicious and stylish canapés are a must. How about a tiny bit of meatloaf on a potato slice, crabmeat and avocado toast, or a mini piece of tenderloin of lamb on a leek pancake with black trumpet mushrooms? All of these are instant fashion comfort food. YW: What is your Christmas wish? ES: I wish for an entire night and day of my childhood with my grandparents and parents, who are no longer on this earth. That would be pure joy. 28 DECEMBER 2019

In this season of oft-indulgent holiday shopping, it’s nice to remember that there are other ways to give. My favorite charity has always been Meals on Wheels. It speaks to me. Providing a hot meal to an in- bound senior citizen is an act of God’s love. Share a smile, bring a meal, and be a friend. You may be the only person they see and talk to all day. Also remember to check on your elderly neighbors and invite them for tea and cake. Listen to their stories of life. Make sure they have someone to share the holiday with. We are our brother’s keeper. Wishing kindness and a safe holiday to you all!
Fabulous Holiday Hostesses Marty Ligon, Nancy Smith, and Mary Ellen Tyson exemplify the art of holiday entertaining. Truly gifted tastemakers, their parties are beyond holly and mistletoe. These ladies can mix it up, make it fun, and also make their festive gatherings look stress free, all the while, looking glamorous fluffing the flowers. Their stylish and colorful soirées always light up the season in Williamson County.
Marty Ligon Marty has lived in Williamson County for fifty years. She loves to entertain and decorate for the seasons. Marty is grandmother to six girls and one boy. ES: What is your holiday cocktail? ML: Eggnog with Prichard’s Rum. ES: Tell us about your #1 holiday entertaining tip? ML: Plan ahead! Early planning of your event is so important. Do as much as you can before the event day. The day of your party should be a rest day. ES: What is your favorite family holiday recipe? ML: Fudge Pie topped with peppermint ice cream and chocolate sauce. Pie can be frozen and pulled out the day of party. ES: What is your favorite Christmas tradition? ML: Family Christmas Dinner. We celebrate the Sunday before Christmas with a seated dinner and enjoy each other’s company. Gifts are exchanged at another time. ES: Your Christmas china? ML: Christmas Tree by Spode.
Nancy Smith Nancy is a resident of downtown Franklin and an avid community preservationist and volunteer. She is the mother of three daughters. ES: What is your holiday cocktail? NS: Rye Old Fashioned. ES: What is your favorite family holiday recipe? NS: Side dish created with our vegetarians in mind such as Asparagus Roll Ups. ES: Your Christmas china? NS: Vintage Noritake Gold & White.

ES: How are you decorating your house this year? NS: Greenery, chartreuse, gold and white.

Cheers to the Holidays! BY CARRIE DRURY
At Harvest Beverage C o m p a n y, w e a r e passionate about discovering new boutique wines and spirits and bringing them to Middle Te n n e s s e e ’ s table.
We all have different traditions but one thing is for sure, the holidays are better with wine. For me, Christmas is a moment together with family when all gather around a beautifully set table of delicious dishes. It’s the perfect time for extraordinary wines. My parents have an exquisite wine cellar and Christmas at my parents means Burly Wines! Burly has been in the portfolio of our family owned distribution company for eight years. McCrorie Family Vineyards is located East of Napa Valley California; the vineyard boasts a climate generally cooler than others in Napa Valley, allowing for longer hang times which promote intensified flavors and layering in the finished wine. Annual production is usually 2,000 cases or less. Did I mention these wines tastes like velvet on your tongue?! Affectionately known as our “Burly Christmas,” my sisters and I arrive with our families in tow and kick the festivities off, basically a reason to arrive early to enjoy light appetizers with our first wine pairing. 2016 Burly Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from a low-yielding block of grapes and produces an intense wine with aromas of white peach and lemon. At first swirl, stone fruit and pineapple aromas leap from the glass. The palate has rich flavors of lemon meringue which is supported by elegant minerality and lively acidity. The sur lie aging rounds out this wine, creating a broad mid palate and a smooth lingering finish. We enjoy a light charcuterie board of different cheeses; goat cheese and beets pairing well, and my personal favorite with a glass of Sauv Blanc, is a homemade deviled egg. As we settle at the table to enjoy our first entree of crab cakes with a delicious remoulade sauce, the 2017 Burly Chardonnay with the smell of oak and vanilla and a touch of butter, leap from the glass. The palate has rich flavors of lemon and melon which are supported by elegant minerality and lively acidity with a smooth lingering finish. The grapes for the 2017 Chardonnay were picked early in the morning and came in cold. The grapes were pressed into new oak barrels and cold fermented by native yeast. The fermentation took forty-five days at sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit. The wine was then aged sur lie for sixteen months. An exceptional Chardonnay; but we allow ourselves only one glass as we prepare for the main course. My sister, Annie, does many things well but her prime rib and burgundy mushrooms at Christmas is one I envy and have tried to replicate without success. Even after the wine flows, we can’t get her to give up the recipe. Nevertheless, it is our family favorite and pairs deliciously with the 2016 Burly Cabernet Sauvignon. A striking balance of fruit and a thick viscous mouthful, the 2016 Burly Cab is truly a remarkable wine that will provide years of enjoyment. Aromas of cassis and blackberries meld seamlessly with notes of chocolate, and anise. The rich, plush mouthful, elegantly transforms into sweetness with supple tannins and lovely oak integration. A wonderful mineral note shines through the whole experience. Layered, complex, and lingering, a true wine drinking experience. Wonderful now, this wine will benefit from further bottle aging, reaching its peak in five to seven years but drinkable for ten years.
Through strong relationships with our suppliers and retailers, our mission is to offer a portfolio of unique wines & spirits that will peak interest, evoke excitement and uphold our desire to provide variety and value for our customers and u l t i m a t e l y o u r c o m m u n i t y. h a r v e s t b e v e r a g e c o m p a n y. c o m

Should you sell your home this holiday season? The holidays have arrived and so has the time of year when home sellers wonder whether they should keep their properties on the market or take them off. The idea of listing a home during the holidays can be daunting but it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few reasons why homeowners should consider listing their homes this winter: 3009 Columbia Ave. Franklin,TN 37064 www.williamsonmemorial.com

5239 Main St. Spring Hill,TN 37174 www.springhill-memorial.com

Less Inventory. For many homeowners, selling their
home during the winter holidays seems like too much work and many will either take their home off the market or wait until the warmer months to list. This creates an inventory shortage, which is good news for a seller. Since there are limited choices for buyers, the homeowner could have a higher asking price.
Control Your Showings. Homeowners do not
need to let their homes be constantly available for showings. Let your real estate agent know if there are certain days/times that won’t work for your schedule. You can have blackout dates where there are no showings, or create a daily schedule outlining when potential buyers can come through the home.
Staging. Staging your home during winter can be easy as
most people decorate for the holidays. Just don’t overdo it, as décor that is too large or over-the-top can distract buyers. Using general fall and winter decorations rather than using religious themes is recommended to keep from offending potential buyers.
Motivated Buyers. People hunting for homes during Open Saturday 10am-5pm & Sunday 1pm-5pm Free Hayrides•Hot Chocolate•Games
Santa will be at the Farm December 7th-8th for free visits & pictures!
the holidays often have a reason for doing so, meaning that they are more motivated buyers. Most buyers who aren’t incredibly motivated will put off a home search during the holidays and pick things up again in the spring. Finally, the most important thing that you can do is hire a REALTOR® affiliated with the National Association of REALTORS®. Realtors have real insights and unparalleled knowledge of your local market and can help you sell your home this winter so that you and your family can get back to celebrating the holidays. Christmas in Color BY JENNIFER PARKER
A
very exciting start to this holiday season for Parker Haven Interiors as we launched our Holiday Decorating Division, lead by the infamous J.R. Roper. After recognizing the need from our clients to assist them throughout the year with various projects, the idea was launched to help bring the holidays home for everyone. By personally customizing all the decorations for each home and talking through the vision with each client, our firm was able to bring the beauty of the holidays, without the hassle and frustration, to multiple clients this season.

A favorite interiors client, Lisa and Pat Davis, recently purchased a new estate home property this year, and wanted to create a magical Christmas setting for family and friends that included lots of color and whimsical fun. By incorporating outdoor and indoor needs, we were able to present the ideas for a classic Christmas entry that leads into the interiors that are constructed with multiple bright colors and vibrant decorations. The result is a Christmas wonderland that exudes the joy and wonder of the holiday and also excites the grandchildren with new colors and unexpected designs. All of the decorations were hand made, constructed, designed and styled by J.R. Roper who executed the vision by working with Lisa and Pat. The main Christmas tree in the kitchen foyer is a focal point starting with a flocked tree and layers of vibrant color, ornaments and ribbon. The royal jewel tones are carried throughout the home including the stunning entry staircase with custom garlands, ornaments and lights. Each room in this stunning home, including the outdoor living spaces around the pool, are also lit with garlands and special touches to help set the stage for a wonderful Christmas season for this special family. Our entire team here at Parker Haven Interiors is grateful for a wonderful and prosperous year. We are most thankful for all of our fabulous clients and the opportunity to help bring function and beauty into their homes. We wish all of you a joyful holiday season! As always, let us know if we can help you bring beauty, form and function into your home throughout the year and now through the holiday seasons as well!

New & Old Traditions for Kids During the Holidays BY KRISTA EHRET
The Christmas season is, by far, the number one time of year when traditions reign supreme. We all have fond memories of times spent during our childhood and it only makes sense that we'd want to pass those on to our own kids. However, as families blend, grow and evolve, sometimes we have to create new traditions to either replace or coincide with the old. Here are some of my favorites from past and present:
Baking Christmas Cookies.
I love to bake, and the holidays are the perfect excuse for Lyla and me to gather around the stand mixer as much as possible. She loves mixing, stirring, and whisking anything that I hand her way and then using the cookie cutters to stamp out the fun shapes. Obviously, the most fun part is the decorating. While messy, it's totally worth it to watch her little face light up. I've baked for many years, so the new tradition comes in as I get to share the fun with my daughter. The nostalgia shows through as we use my late grandmother's vintage cookie cutters. Baked goods make the perfect gift for friends and neighbors as well. FYI: I do not let the two year old help with gifted treats as we have a few years to go before her kitchen hygiene skills have been perfected to a satisfactory level for others. Try to do the “real” baking when the babes are out of the house so they don't feel like they're missing out.
Charitable Causes
Getting the kids involved in the true spirit of the season is very important and a great tradition to start. They are never too young to learn the beautiful art of selflessness and charity. Going caroling, adopting an Angel Tree angel, visiting the animal shelter, participating in school toy drives, whatever you can get them involved in, do it. Kids love helping others and performing simple acts of kindness, especially this time of year, will make the holidays that much better.
Candy Cane Hunt
A friend told me about this one and I think it's adorable! It's essentially an Easter egg hunt, but with candy canes. You hide the candies either inside or out and then give the kids a set amount of time to find as many as they can. Whoever finds the most gets a prize. For older children, you could have teams and turn this into a scavenger hunt with clues to find the next candy cane.
Reading The Night Before Christmas
This is an oldie, but goody. On Christmas Eve at bedtime, turn off the TV, have everyone in the house gather around, and let someone read this book aloud.
Best Lights Award
I've never done this, but we plan to start this year. You tell the kids that it's bedtime and have them get into their jammies. Then as a surprise, load the family into the car (warmed and ready with hot cocoa and Christmas carols). Drive through your neighborhood and select the house that offers the best light and decoration display. Place a $5 or $10 gift card in their mailbox with a card that they are the “Jones'” family's 2019 favorite and this is a thank you for spreading such cheer. KRISTA EHRET

Five hundred gift boxes, 500 ornaments and 500 LED Edison bulb style electric lights decorate the Banquet Hall Tree. PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE BILTMORE COMPANY 48 DECEMBER 2019
George Vanderbilt opened Biltmore House for the first time to family and friends on Christmas Eve 1895. Today, Biltmore’s Christmas events are based on what was learned from archives about that first holiday celebration. That attention to tradition and detail is what has made Christmas at Biltmore one of the Southeast’s most beloved holiday travel destinations. Known for its monumental scale of traditional holiday décor and dazzling lights, this year Biltmore’s annual Christmas at Biltmore celebration will offer even more than ever before. If you have been or never been to the Biltmore, a trip during the holidays is a requirement to see this amazing structure and grounds in all its festive best. A yuletide feast for the senses, Christmas at Biltmore began the first of November. he interiors shine with the sparkle of more than fifty of the hand-decorated Christmas trees, ribbons and garlands measured by the mile, and thousands of lights. A majestic thirty five -foot Fraser fir in the Banquet Hall is the home’s holiday centerpiece. For the first time, hand-decorated Christmas trees will be displayed on the balcony that wraps around the home’s two-story Library. Special Holiday 2019 Events:
Candlelight Christmas Evenings
During Candlelight Christmas Evenings, candlelight, firelight, and live music will create a magical environment that elevates seasonal celebrations inside Biltmore House. A fifty five-foot Norway Spruce on the home’s front lawn lit with 55,000 lights will greet guests as they arrive to enter Biltmore House. The warm welcome continues at Antler Hill Village & Winery with a constellation of holiday lights leading to the Winery and estate restaurants. A towering tree of lights will illuminate the Village Green, with a sea of lighted grapevine spheres nestled in the landscaping. Lights cascading from the trees that surround the bonfire area near Antler Hill Barn will offer a unique touch to the experience.
Downton Abbey: The Exhibition
Downton Abbey: The Exhibition will feature interactive elements that connect fans to their favorite characters, fashions, locations, and historic events of the era. Showcased in two estate locations, the exhibition pairs seamlessly with the real-life story of the Vanderbilt family at Biltmore. Amherst at Deerpark will be set with multimedia presentations and some of the series’ most recognizable sets—including Mrs. Patmore’s hectic kitchen and the gossip-fueled servants’ quarters. At the Biltmore Legacy in Antler Hill Village, a gallery of more than fifty costumes from the series will be on view. The exhibition will run through April 7, 2020. Access to Downton Abbey: The Exhibition is included with daytime admission, Candlelight Christmas Evenings admission, or an overnight stay that includes daytime admission. YOURWILLIAMSON.COM 49

The Organization Behind the Franklin Christmas Parade BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM
It’s time to celebrate the holidays in Williamson County! A true Christmas tradition in Franklin is the Kiwanis Franklin Christmas Parade which is rolling into town on December 7th at 2pm in downtown Franklin! The Kiwanis Club of Historic Downtown Franklin has been organizing the Franklin Christmas Parade for more than twenty years, bringing joy and the spirit of Christmas to the community. The Kiwanis Club is an international organization with 550,000 members of all ages in eighty countries, all with a common mission of improving the lives of children one community at a time. Each local club identifies ways to achieve that goal in their respective communities. The Franklin Kiwanis Club was originally chartered in 1980 and has been serving our local community since.
“The club gave scholarships to kids several years ago but had stopped due to limited funds. When we started our parade sponsorship program three years ago, we were able to resume the scholarship program,” explains Marta. “Our plan was to award five $1,000 scholarships to seniors from the five local high schools. The applicants were so outstanding, we weren't able to narrow it down to five, so we awarded ten. Information about the scholarships is available through guidance counselors at Franklin High, Independence High, Page High, Centennial, and Renaissance High.” In the past five years, the Franklin Christmas Parade has grown by leaps and bounds, with nearly 100 entries. Those participating range from nonprofits to businesses to school groups to Scouts. “The excitement this year is our band participation has grown from five or six bands, to four states and approximately 850 young adults,” Marta says. “If you love a parade with bands - don't miss it this year! We will also have Mrs. Claus riding in the sleigh with Santa this year which is a first!” Marta says, although the Kiwanis Club organizes and promotes the parade themselves, they could not do it without the help and support of the local firefighters, police, streets and sanitation, city and parks. The Kiwanis Club of Historic Downtown Franklin is a small but growing club. To learn more about the club or to become involved, contact franklintnkiwanis@gmail.com.
The Franklin Christmas Parade is now the primary fundraiser for the club, although there have been other fundraising activities over the years. “In addition to the scholarship program we implemented last year, we have repeatedly given financial support to the GraceWorks Fuelbags program, Saddle Up, ABLE Youth, Special Olympics - to name a few,” says Club President Marta Eynatten. “A year ago, we sponsored a local young man who competed in the National Para Games representing the state of Tennessee. We've purchased Christmas gifts for residents at My Friends House and CASA kids, as well as purchasing gifts for children through the Franklin Firefighters Association Toy Drive.”

LIFESTYLE | A Southern Gentleman Is...
...A thoughtful gift giver! BY TIM KEARNS
With Christmas right around the corner, it is time to think about a gift for that special someone in your life. A Southern Gentleman doesn’t just grab the first thing that he sees. He puts thought into the person receiving the gift and chooses something that will make their face light up on Christmas morning. That doesn’t mean, however, that he needs to mortgage the house or charge up the credit cards to buy a thoughtful gift. One begins the process by being observant; listen for little hints that are being thrown out. Are there things that are mentioned periodically in a passive way: “I really wish I had...,” or “such and such would make life easier for me.” Little nuggets of information throughout the year would go a long way to help make gift-giving easier. How much more would a gift mean to her if she opened it and said, “Wow! You remembered me telling you that?” Or, “how did you know I liked that fragrance?” That my friend, will make your gift supersized by comparison!
that was something I was interested in?” Awe honey, you know I listen to everything you say! (Wink, wink).
However, if you miss the hints, use information you already have; her style, color choices, the accessories she buys for herself, etc. Become the gift detective that creates lists of potential items that you know she already likes or needs. One thing I notice is that stores are filled with winter clothes and items because, after all, it is winter. However, there are tips and hints that you should be taking note of for all twelve months of the year, make yourself a gift list as you hear ideas throughout the year. It may be summer and your significant other might see or mention something that would be a good gift idea-- just jot that down in the notes area of your smart phone and look at it when the holidays roll around. With online shopping you can get anything, at any time, regardless of the season. For example gents... I’m at the beach with my wife and she sees something that she thinks might be “handy to have,” I’ll drop that back in my notes and order it later. I can hear her now on Christmas morning: “how did you know
A Southern Gentleman is going to think outside the box. He’s going to listen. He’s going to pay attention and this holiday season he’s going to step up and get a gift that will be thoughtful and meaningful! This is our year guys, let’s get it right! From this Southern Gentleman and my family, I wish all of you a very Blessed Christmas and New Year!
If you’re still having a hard time finding the right item, how about giving thought to a labor-intensive item that gives her some relief in a time of need. As an example, if she’s a new Mom, how about a few hours of babysitting service she can use when she’s at her wits end? If she works away from the home but still takes care of her own house cleaning, how about a certificate for a house cleaning service she can use when she feels the need for some time off? She already has a nice car, but after a rainy winter it might be nice to have it fully detailed? There are many options for those gift cards here in Williamson County. How about the gift of flowers? There are a variety of options for a monthly arrangement to show up at the house or her place of work? Talk about a gift that keeps on giving!
TIM KEARNS A Southern Gentleman Is... Tim is a Williamson County business owner who lives, works and plays all within the county limits. He has been a triathlete for thirty-three years and married to Bess Kearns for thirty-two years. All of his commitments are for the long haul!

5 FINANCIAL GIFT IDEAS FOR CHILDREN
GIVE A GIFT WITH LASTING IMPACT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY DAVID MCDANIEL
Requests for super heroes, slime, Legos, and electronics are sure to fill Santa’s mailbox this year. But as adults, we know these toys are all soon forgotten. A financial gift may not be what they’re telling Santa they want, but it is a gift that can have a lasting impact for the children in your life. Here are five ideas to give a gift that keeps giving this holiday season:
PERSONAL FINANCE BOOK
Even children as young as three years old know that money can buy them the things they want. Learning about budgeting, saving, and earning money can be more fun with a story. From board books to pre-teen to young adults, there are many options out there that can help put the child in your life on the path to financial success.
SAVINGS BOND
The classic financial gift for children; Savings are not subject to state or local income taxes and offer a locked rate of interest over a fixed period of time and can help ready your child for the future.
STOCKS
Purchase even a single share of stock to a company your child loves and help them watch it fluctuate over time. This will help your child learn to be not just a saver, but an investor.*
ROTH IRA
If your child has earned income, you can open a Roth IRA. You can then contribute to a Roth and encourage them to add to it throughout the years by offering a match for every dollar they contribute.*
529 COLLEGE SAVINGS ACCOUNT
College costs are increasing, and this trend is expected to continue. 529 College Savings plans are tax-advantaged plans that your child may not understand now, but they will be sure to thank you for later.

Holiday Entertaining with Little Kids Around
BY KRISTA EHRET
As a first-time mom of a two-year-old, I'm quickly learning that kids truly make the holidays so much more fun. Everything to them is new and beyond exciting and that excitement radiates out to everyone around. One aspect that can become a bit more challenging with young kiddos in tow is entertaining. Here are some do's and don’t’s if you're planning on being the hostess with the mostess slash mom of the year this season.
Do’s
Do: Get your dates set now. If you haven't already nailed down your party dates, stop reading (briefly) and do it immediately. Guests and babysitters get booked quickly, so it's important to be on top of it. Do: Decide if you plan to host a kid-friendly family party or an adult cocktail event. Don't try to blend the two together. You're looking at two completely different vibes here and you want to embrace each for its individual fun. Do: Go in with your friends for a group babysitter. The holidays are expensive. By hosting several children at the same house with a couple of sitters, parents are free to attend the party and also save a few dollars. Do: Let the kids help prep for the party. They will enjoy being a part of the event, especially if it's one for their own friends. Do: Decorate your home with kid-friendly pieces. I've now realized how much seasonal décor is breakable!
Don’ts
Don't: Plan to have a sitter at your house if you're hosting an adult party. This works for some types of gatherings, but unless you have a newborn, find lodging for the young ones somewhere else. Don't: Limit yourself to one event. If you love your traditional boozy, tacky sweater party with friends, but also want to plan a fun day for kids, do both! Make the kid party a daytime event and then select a different evening to host your adult group. Don't: Get stressed out. I know this is so much easier said than done especially when you're trying to prep for an event. However, kids pick up on these vibes and you want them to remember the holiday season for how much fun it was; not how tense and snippy mommy and daddy were. KRISTA EHRET

MONTHLY | Did You Know?
The Nutcracker Ballet It’s Christmas time which means it’s time for that timeless holiday classic... The Nutcracker Ballet! Here are some facts about the famous ballet and the infamous Nutcracker you may not have known! The classic fairy-tale ballet, The Nutcracker, has become the most frequently performed ballet in the world.
The first fulllength production was in the U.S. and performed in 1944 at the San Francisco Opera Ballet. In Germany, there is a folklore tradition based on the idea that nutcrackers protect your family and bring your home good luck. For this reason, nutcrackers were often given to children at Christmas time.
Did You Know? - TRIVIA -
Walt Disney used some of the Nutcracker music in his 1940 animated movie Fantasia. People liked the movie and started to take an interest in the ballet.
The story originally wasn't for children. The beloved children’s ballet is based on ETA Hoffman’s darker themed: The Nutcracker & the Mouse King. Hoffman's original work showed humanity's dark-sided nature and was definitely not appropriate for children. The ballet chose to follow a lighter adaptation of the story written by Dumas — a prolific French author in the 19th century.
