improve the hand you’re originally dealt. To get started, you’ll need a full deck (or two for more than six players) and something to keep score with. Start by dealing each player the same amount of cards. For two to four players, each person gets ten cards. For five players, each person gets six cards. With any game over five players, each person should be dealt seven cards. Use the leftover cards to create a stock pile face down, then take the first card on top and lay it face up in a new pile. This creates the discard pile. The player to the left of the dealer can either draw a card from the stock or pick up the top card from the discard pile. The players’ objective is to make your cards into two types of combinations: either a run (numeric sequence of three or more cards in matching suits) or a set (three or four cards in the same rank). The first person to do so with one card left to discard wins that round. The cards in your combination will determine your score based on their value. SPADES Spades is played with four players with two players per team. The game begins with the dealer giving each player thirteen cards, face down in a clockwise rotation. Each player will then take a turn placing one card clockwise around the table. The card must be in whichever suit is played first. Four cards played in a unit create a trick. Before each round begins, players will say a random number, the total of which, combined with their partners number, becomes their guess of how many tricks will occur that round. The goal is to get as close to your guess or “bid” as possible. If your team hits your target number of tricks, you win points, and if you don’t your team is penalized. If you make more tricks then you bid, you are also penalized. You play rounds this way until someone wins what is known as the rubber, which is typically achieved by the first team to score 500 points.
