Their communication skills are hands down the best we’ve ever worked with. Not only do they build a beautiful, quality home, but they all work so well together and it shows in the final product! “We asked around before we started the building process, and everyone was so complimentary of Legend Homes. What we found out after the fact, is that they were everything we hoped for and more. We could not recommend them more! They are knowledgeable, well prepared, and always made sure we were well informed along the way!” Matt & Nicki Robins

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” – LUKE 2:14 CALHOUN & KEELING BIRDSONG WITH SANTA
I share with you, as I have every year since I started publishing this magazine – the wonderful letter of old, sharing the story reminding us all that: “Yes Virginia, there Is a Santa Claus.” And how, do you ask, am I certain of this? Because I believe. I believe in the spirit of Christmas, and I believe in a baby born in a manger so long ago. I believe in the power of that moment of light in the darkness of the world. So, this holy season, I know my prayer is your prayer. I know my belief is yours. From our house to yours, Williamson County, may this Christmas season be filled with light, hope, love, faith and a belief in something that cannot always be seen. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Shelly Robertson Birdsong | Publisher shelly@robertsonmediagroup.com
Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial September 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies and other editorials, and on posters and stamps. DEAR EDITOR: I am eight years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would

Celebrating 10 Years
be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

The Importance of Being Antibiotic Aware WMC offers state-of-theart diagnostic testing to help determine the cause of most common infections rapidly. For patients with bacteria in their blood, we can identify the specific cause in roughly twelve to twentyfour hours. These advanced diagnostic tools help our providers make educated decisions on antibiotic selection more efficiently to get patients on the road to recovery. Also, our antimicrobial stewardship team is alerted real-time of rapid diagnostic results to further ensure appropriate antibiotic protocols.
WITH KELLY BYRGE, M.D. AND WILLIAMSON MEDICAL CENTER Antibiotics can save lives, but they can also cause adverse effects if not taken appropriately. The issue of antibiotic resistance is critical, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working to drive awareness about the importance of safe antibiotic use. Hospitals such as Williamson Medical Center (WMC) are not only striving to educate their communities about this topic but are also driving standards of excellence to guide appropriate antibiotic use by healthcare providers. WMC established an award-winning Antibiotic Stewardship Committee comprised of a multidisciplinary team of specially trained physicians, pharmacists, nurses, laboratory staff, patient safety and quality, and informatics personnel working together to develop processes and procedures to optimize the use of antibiotics. Kelly Byrge, M.D. Infectious Disease and physician chair of the committee, and Montgomery Green, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP and pharmacy committee chair, are sharing information, misconceptions and recommendations to help empower you to navigate your health in the event of illness or infection. Not all infections respond to antibiotic therapy. Not every type of infection will respond to antibiotic therapy. Antibiotics should only be used for bacterial infections and are not effective for common viral infections such as the common cold, the flu or COVID-19.
Keeping a record of prior allergies or intolerances so that your practitioner can make the most educated decision regarding antibiotic selection is also important as is an open conversation with your provider before beginning a course of antibiotic treatment. Antibiotic resistance is one of the most urgent threats to public health. Antibiotics are effective resources when they are needed and can cure life-threatening infections, but the more we utilize them (especially inappropriately) the less effective they can become. Bacteria are smart, and each antibiotic exposure allows them the opportunity to create mechanisms toward resistance. Antibiotics kill bacteria that are susceptible to that specific antibiotic, but there are small populations of bacteria that can develop ways to survive being killed by certain antibiotics. Those bacteria pass on their resistance mechanisms not only to their offspring but also to the other bacteria in the environment around them. Bacterial resistance develops faster than we can develop new antibiotics to tackle these new resistance mechanisms, and the pipeline for new antibiotic development is not as robust
as needed to compete with the speed that bacteria are developing resistance to our current therapies. The more frequently antibiotics are used within a community, higher rates of resistance may develop in bacteria that circulate between members of that community. The judicious use of antibiotics including using them only when they are necessary and choosing the right antibiotic can help minimize this development of antibiotic resistance. To help combat this, the WMC Antibiotic Stewardship Committee works on an individual level by reviewing charts of patients on antibiotics during their hospital stay to ensure they are receiving the most appropriate medication at the correct dose and optimal duration. In addition, we work on a larger systems level by analyzing our antibiotic use as a facility and translating this information into decision-support tools to aid our providers in their antibiotic prescribing habits. Williamson Medical Center is dedicated to enhancing antibiotic use protocols. WMC was recently recognized as an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). This designation acknowledges the health system’s efforts to optimize the use of antibiotics to maximize patient benefits and minimize both the rise of antibiotic resistance as well as adverse effects to patients from unnecessary antibiotic therapy. We are passionate about this work because the impact is not just confined within our hospital walls. Smarter antibiotic prescribing on an individual level also plays a large role in reducing the incidence of antibiotic resistance within the entire community. The Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence designation should make WMC patients and their family members confident they will receive only the best when it comes to antibiotic prescribing while under our care. To learn more, visit williamsonmedicalcenter.org.
KELLY BYRGE, M.D. Williamson Medical Center Dr. Kelly Byrge is an Infectious Disease Doctor, and physician chair of the WMC Antibiotic Stewardship Committee and Montgomery Green, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP and WMC Antibiotic Stewardship Committee pharmacy chair.

I Am Williamson County
The “Starr”of the Leiper’s Fork Christmas Parade BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM
Jennifer (Jeni) Starr Housley is a very familiar face throughout Williamson County. Especially in Leiper’s Fork. Jeni and her beloved eye-catching mule, Hooch, take trips in the area often - riding throughout the area and this time of year, participating in the Leiper’s Fork Christmas Parade. They can be seen carrying the American flag during the parade, decked out in red Christmas attire. Jeni and her family have lived in Williamson County for over forty years, with three generations living locally. Involvement in the community runs deep, and we wanted to share more about this unique lady and her horse with our readers. YW: What is it about WC that makes it home? JH: We chose this area because it was familyoriented, rural and scenic, had good schools and people were friendly… We all say “hi” and introduce ourselves and become friends for life. We like the feel of Franklin… We could have horses and other animals in our neighborhood. We could ride trails in the woods and also ride to town with Leiper’s Fork people. Franklin had city and country…the best of both worlds.
YW: How long have you been a part of the Leiper’s Fork Christmas Parade, and how did that begin? JH: Ten years ago, Laura Musgrave, director of the parade, recruited Hooch and me to carry the flag in the Leiper’s Fork Christmas parade. The parade is so much fun! The town is alive with incredible energy and creativity. You never know what unusual floats, costumes and elements you will see.
Being in Williamson County has enabled me to create, relate, grow, and enjoy life with friends and family.
YW: Tell us about Hooch. JH: Hooch is a Tennessee Mule that I’ve had for thirty-one years. He’s won numerous trophies for his appearance, conformation, disposition, and equine abilities. But, what makes him so special is that he loves people and loves to please.
YW: What community organizations are important to you? JH: Community involvement is very important to me, and I just realized Hooch has been involved in all of my local organizations as well! Hooch and I have been involved with Saddle Up!, where he would attend many events and let kids ride him. He is very attentive to special needs and children in wheelchairs. We have been active with the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County events - riding at PumpkinFest and Dickens of a Christmas. I have been a cowgirl during the Rodeo Parade. Friends of Franklin Parks and Harlinsdale has been another love of mine. Hooch has helped out the Old Glory Daughters of America group by carrying the flag at the 2020 Veterans Day Parade at Harlinsdale Farm.
20 HOLIDAY 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
Hooch is a media star! He has been in calendars, featured in USA Today, and has been on the local news. I have ridden him sidesaddle in the Rose Bowl Parade, Kentucky Derby Parade, opening parade of the Cowgirl Museum in Fort Worth, and performed in Branson at a show. He has also been a part of the Wilson County Fair and Tennessee State Fair. Hooch and I love to make people smile and enjoy experiences. Hooch has helped me make friends with all kinds of people in many places - and all of this started here in Williamson County. Hooch gets mail and has people come to visit him and take pictures. I am so grateful for all of the friends and supporters in our journey. I love this quote I heard from a man who studied
Hooch at an event: “How long did it take the Lord to think up an animal like that?!” YW: What is your “day job,” and how does it involve your creativity? JH: My day job involves spending time with my two sons, Decker and Cooper, and their families. My Jeni Designs business keeps me busy creating jewelry and fashion accessories, with products in Big Sky, Vero Beach, Banner Elk, Dallas, Pagosa Springs, and locally in Nashville. I also started modeling in Williamson County with Advantage Modeling several years ago. My animal entertainment has given me additional joy over twenty-five years - I have loved sharing my mini donkey and mules with many wonderful people. The I Am Williamson County column features individuals in Williamson County who are known and unknown as staples of our community, doing good, being seen and exuding Williamson County! If you know of someone to whom we should ask our questions, let us know at info@ yourwilliamson.com.

‘Tis the Season DECK THE HALLS WITH JILL & HOLLY
BY HOLLY HAMILTON
It is finally here…for most! Although, for Jill and myself, we have been decking the halls since October 31st! And, for Christmas, not Halloween. This brings us to this issue, featuring our client in Kinnard Springs, just on the outskirts of Franklin. I will be sharing some ideas of ribbon choices, tips for sprucing up, wearing Styrofoam cranberry garlands, as well as pine cones and other tips of the trade. Do you know when to purchase new or how to mend the old? What about the dreaded fuse making your lit tree go out! Or worse still - one lone strand! You can do all of it yourself or better yet… “Deck your Halls with Jill and Holly” can! But if you do decide to go it alone, remember: Patience and following through is key once you start digging out the boxes in the attic or storage area.
38 NOVEMBER 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
The Hogg family has shared their home with us for two years of decorating their home for the holidays. We always like to begin with any new client, with a conversation about your heart’s desire on decorating the tree, the front scape around the entryway, and the banisters and railings. It is always a treat to see everything lit up when your guests arrive for the family meal or gathering on Christmas day. One big piece of advice to all of you do-it-yourselfers: Remember to set a budget… And stick to it. Decide your color scheme and overall theme in color, texture, and style. I always enjoy monochromatic looks that coordinate the home’s furniture and color scheme. In contrast, Jill likes more festive colors, like reds and plaids that traditionally speak Christmas.
The most important element of any design has to be the lighting! We can even add incandescent mini lights, lush ribbons and a key fob timer to the outlet with a push of our finger to turn off or on from inside your warm home! For example, the Hogg’s tree, banisters, and outdoor entry are all set to convenient and pleasant timers. After a long day coming home from work, what a terrific ‘push of a button’ to get everything on quick, instead of bending over and fooling with plugs and outlets. Nativity porcelain keepsakes make a lovely statement, such as the one on the mantle at the Hogg home. Mingled in with pine needle garlands adorned with mahogany pine cones, lights and ribbons make us all remember the season as you walk in the main living area.
• •
•
Another quick fix is a spool of ribbon… Take off old faded and crinkled ribbons and make new bows and streamers. When the top half of your tree inadvertently goes out, don’t be quick to anger; just fix it. Open up the plug, it has a sliding plastic movable door (most do not know this), slide it open. A spare fuse is on the left, and the blown one is between the gold metal brackets. Replace and VOILA! You are back in business with lights all a glow!
One more tip: Next year will go even faster for decorating if you properly store your decor away in tubs, labeled by room and itemized by specific area. A little more time-consuming on the front end, but a wonderful excitement the next year when pulling it all back out. Putting effort into something is an excellent return if you follow through! And remember, we are just a phone call away! Happy Holidays and a Merry Christmas to all!
A few tips: •
•
For those undesirable red berries that have faded to a pale pink or have white holes - use a red fingernail polish bottle and repaint them. Children love to get involved and help mom or dad, too and it’s a great way to spend your Saturday afternoon with the family! A spray can of polyurethane is outstandingly a quick fix to spray your brown pine cones and bring their luster back to life. It takes fifteen seconds for total restoration.

The South’s Grand Hotel THE ICONIC PEABODY HOTEL CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS
Enjoy the holidays at the Peabody Memphis! With a style and tradition befitting one of Memphis’ grandest, most legendary hotels, The Peabody Memphis offers a magnificent bridge between the “Blues City’s” celebrated past and cosmopolitan present. Known as the “South’s Grand Hotel,” The Peabody is legendary for its charm, elegance, gracious hospitality and rich history. This Memphis icon, opened in 1869, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is world-famous for its five resident ducks, who march daily through the lobby at 11am and 5pm. When you’re ready to experience Memphis’ most unique and distinctive hotel, The Peabody is waiting. And there is no more fitting time than now, during the holiday season when the hotel is decorated in fabulous holiday décor and featuring a number of specials and promotions for celebrating a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’s. Peabody’s story as one of the grandest, most historic hotels in downtown Memphis dates back to 1869 when the original Peabody Hotel opened on the corner of Main and Monroe, immediately becoming Memphis’s social and business hub. In 1925 a newer, grander Peabody was built at its present location of Union and 2nd Street, continuing the legacy of the “South’s Grand Hotel.” It was 1933 when ducks were originally placed in the hotel’s lobby fountain, setting in motion an eighty five-year tradition that continues today with the March of the Peabody Ducks.
The Legend of the Ducks How did the tradition of the ducks in The Peabody fountain begin? Back in the 1930s, Frank Shutt, General Manager of The Peabody, and a friend, Chip Barwick, returned from a weekend hunting trip to Arkansas. The men had a little too much Tennessee sippin’ whiskey and thought it would be funny to place some of their live duck decoys (it was legal then for hunters to use live decoys) in the beautiful Peabody fountain. Three small English call ducks were selected as “guinea pigs,” and the reaction was nothing short of enthusiastic. Thus began a Peabody tradition that was to become internationally famous.® In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke, a former circus animal trainer, offered to help with delivering the ducks to the fountain each day and taught them the now-famous Peabody Duck March. Mr. Pembroke became Peabody Duckmaster, serving in that capacity for fifty years until his retirement in 1991. Nearly ninety years after the inaugural march, the ducks still visit the lobby fountain daily. Book your holiday getaway and enjoy this fabled and beautiful hotel.

AVOIDING HOLIDAY
Shopping Stress WITH KRISTA EHRET Embracing the season’s true spirit is a blessing. The stuff is awesome. I’m not opposed to the stuff. But I am no longer succumbing to the stress associated with stuff. Delivery dates, cargo in limbo, inflated prices, the fifteen magazines that we’ve received from retailers simply for my daughters to fawn over pages after pages of toys. My mom-goal this season is to bask in the glow that is the magic and joy that radiates out of Lyla as she spots new inflatables on our drive to dance and watch Rose truly take in. We all have the images from Black Friday gone wrong ingrained in our brains. The mobs of desperate shoppers pushing and shoving their way to snag the last of the great deal item while onlooking store clerks wish they could be home with their families. Gift-giving is a fun and well-intended part of the holiday season but has unfortunately evolved into a greed-driven scheme of the marketing world. It arguably is also one of the biggest stress inducers as we circle the mall parking lot and break our budget to find just the right item. Online shopping has definitely made crowds no longer an issue. But what about the glorification of “stuff” that comes with this pricey territory? Do we really need all of the “stuff” to have a fun holiday? It’s not that we care as adults about lots of gifts, but we want the kids to be happy. So, the question arises, how do we not deprive our children of a fun Christmas morning but keep the complete obsession with material goods at bay? I believe that a balance can be found between the “stuff” and creating experiences. If you think about your childhood and your favorite Christmas memories, you may remember one or two gifts that were really coveted and exciting. The rest of the good times were likely traditions
and fun things that you did with your family. Baking, caroling, watching your favorite holiday movies, decorating the tree, etc. These are the moments we wish we could relive with our loved ones. However, in the moment, you can’t very well explain to a five-year-old that these memories are so much better than that silly old dollhouse she wanted and didn’t get. Still, the precedent of how we will do Christmas starts early. I know some parents who limit the number of gifts and tell their children to list three things that they really want, and that’s what they get. Good in theory. The problem arises when the kid is sixteen, and their shortlist includes a convertible and new Prada bag. I know other parents who do a few gifts but then ask family and friends to please abstain from sending additional items. Another one that’s good in theory, but I’m not going toe to toe with my mom and her fun to shop for her only grand-babies. Others go on trips versus buying gifts. I love this idea as you are definitely creating memories for the family, but I am nostalgic and still get giddy waking up Christmas morning to gifts under a tree. So, unfortunately, we’re back to phase one with no universal solution. Everyone has to find a system that works for
them. Personally, I shop early and mostly online. I create a budget and do not allow myself to go over it. Items are not put on credit cards because that makes overspending way too easy. I believe in quality over quantity, especially for the adults you shop for. Baked goods are the only gifts given to friends and extended family, and I stick to the same simple recipes. As new items come in, old items go out. Charity is essential and will continue to be a staple, especially as I teach my daughter the true meaning of giving. Experiences such as zoo memberships and tickets to sporting events, concerts, or plays always make great gifts and give the recipients something to look forward to. Living intentionally and being present is so important this time of year. Create a game plan but give yourself some grace to avoid unnecessary stress. Recognize when you are being pulled into a marketing scheme and remember that more is not always necessary to make your loved ones happy. Your time is more valuable than anything tangible, and adults and children alike can recognize when you are genuinely engaged and at the moment. My closing tip: focus on creating those memories and leave all of the other “stuff” behind.

Styling YOUR Everyday
MAKING HOLIDAY MAGIC WITH JENNY REIMOLD & HOMEGOODS AT HOME TIPS Don’t rein it in: I like to take an out-of-the-box approach and repurpose items in new ways when styling any space. I spotted an oversized metal reindeer punchbowl on HomeGoods.com that I styled at the base of my fireplace. Instead of filling it with punch, I stuffed it with faux greenery, glass and metallic ornaments, then wrapped presents to create the ultimate statement piece!
swags and join them together with wire to cascade over your mantel. I find some of the best swags at HomeGoods, and they are always affordable and have unique decorative details like pinecones, flocked fir, ribbon, ornaments and more. They’re perfectly pre-decorated, so it helps to save some time!
Cut & Tuck Mix and match garlands for an over-the-top greenery mantle display! After securing faux cedar or cypress “foundation strands” with adhesive hooks, cut and tuck pieces from a second piece of garland and nestle those in amongst the first layer. By layering garland with faux greenery, you add extra texture and volume to any seasonal display. At HomeGoods, I always look for garland with pre-decorated ornaments or pinecones that add a pop of color and work well for this technique.
Overdo the Ornaments Ornaments are not just for the trees! I love placing them in bowls, adding them to greenery and hanging them on garland for that extra pop of color. This year, I used them on my faux sprigs to create an illusion of a glistening gold waterfall cascading off my mantle. Adding ornaments doesn’t have to add up either – stores like HomeGoods have tons of unique ornaments in a variety of colors, patterns, shapes and sizes that you can find in bulk for under $15! Pro Tip: opt for durable felt, plaster or melamine ornaments for the areas that kids can reach.
Don’t Skip the Swags One of my secret styling tips is to use front door swags to style your fireplace mantle! It’s an easy trick that makes a big impact. Take two

by the oversized metal reindeer punchbowl, I leaned into metal reindeer silverware, napkin holders and a smaller reindeer punch bowl on my kitchen table. Similar to the presents at the base of the fireplace, I also incorporated faux fir and swags into the place settings to bring through that earthy energy! Ski Chalet Guest Room Décor for all Ski’son Long Transform a guest bedroom into a thematic ski cabin this holiday. First, create the perfect “pillowscape” using flannel and ski-inspired embroidered pillows. Next, for the bedding, layer buffalo checked quilts with Scandinavian-influenced tassel blankets to create a warm, cozy oasis for visitors all season long. The beauty of this look is that it doesn’t have to be taken down right after the holidays; enjoy it throughout the winter! Serve Up the Season When hosting, I love setting guests up with a themed room to make them feel extra special, and I always make sure to include some seasonal goodies for them to snack on. While it may be a traditional sign of hospitality to style a bed tray, get creative by using a decorative sled instead! Top a vintage-inspired sled with a Nordic mug set and fluffy, snowman marshmallows from HomeGoods, an extraordinary welcome that costs less than $30! Winterize the walls: Don’t forget to incorporate wall art to polish off your winter space. Hang standard 24” x 24” or 40’ x 40” canvas art prints on the walls to elevate any themed look. Changing out wall art doesn’t have to
be expensive, stores like HomeGoods have a variety of affordable seasonal canvases, like this acrylic, downhill mountain piece that helped inspire my Ski Chalet guest bedroom. Create a Cozy Corner Create the ultimate outdoor hot chocolate spot and transform an ordinary bench using a simple styling formula. Layer a fringed, holiday throw diagonally across the seat and then add two solid colored, textured pillows. Top that with a third printed or patterned pillow for a pillowscape under $50 and more than worthy of Santa’s annual visit. Now, you’ve got the perfect spot for sipping hot chocolate all season long. Ho-Ho Holidays Front Porch Front Porch to Impress Use larger-than life holiday décor on your front porch, steps or walkway to impress guests (and your neighbors). I love all the oversized accents at HomeGoods like Nutcrackers, moose, faux Christmas trees and wooden holiday signs which can create a grand entrance outside of your home for under $200. Oh, Christmas Tree This year, for a dramatic effect and a bold statement, I grouped 10 trees together for the ultimate holiday runway. I love using faux greenery on my front porch as it’s less temperamental than real greenery and can be reused seasonally! I opted to include a variety of shapes and sizes to help add intrigue and keep it from feeling cookie-cutter. As a final touch, to give each tree its own unique flair, I added bright pops of color throughout the trees by layering felt pom pom garland, string Santas and faux berry sprigs.

THE 2021 WILLIAMSON COUNTY REAL ESTATE MARKET
Need a conversation starter for your holiday dinner this year? Look no further! We have the perfect content to engage your guests and have their jaws on the floor. This year has been nothing short of a whirlwind in terms of the real estate market. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a quick look at this year in review. In January 2021, the Median Home Sales price in Williamson County came out to $582,000, compared to 2020’s $518,000. That is a substantial increase of 12.4%.
NEW YEAR NEW HOME
As the year progressed, the median home sales price continued to escalate. In October of 2021, the median home sales price landed at a whopping $758,366. This is a 30% increase in the sales price over the span of 2021. Not to mention, the average number of days on the market has decreased from twenty-five in January 2021 to a mere nine in October 2021. We are certain November’s data will reveal the same reality: homes are flying off the market, and FAST. So, what can we expect for the end of the year and 2022?
for an ice breaker or to add shock value to your dinner conversations. Follow along with WCAR on instagram for more insight and data on the Williamson County real estate market. Happy Holidays!
“As we move into what has historically been a slow time of year for the market, I see no signs of it slowing down. I am optimistic for a robust holiday season in the Williamson County market and am looking ahead toward a promising 2022,” said 2021 WCAR Board President Lorie Layman. So, folks, as you gather around the table this holiday season, be sure to put these astonishing numbers in your back pocket

Historic Churches of Franklin WITH RICK WARWICK
As we approach the Advent season each year, a popular theme on conservative talk radio is a cry to “Keep Christ in Christmas.” Well, with that thought in mind, I will avoid discussing elves, reindeer, mistletoe and sugar plum fairies and, instead, focus on the physical representatives of that humble teacher who stressed loving one’s neighbor as thyself; that being our historic churches in Williamson County. The Big Harpeth Primitive Baptist Church was the first church in Williamson County, organized in 1799, and was first located three miles east of Franklin. In 1909, a cyclone demolished the church, and the new church was built on Liberty Pike, one mile from the Square. Unfortunately, Franklin only has one antebellum church structure, and that is St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, organized in 1827 and built in 1831. Rev. James H. Otey came to Franklin to teach at Harpeth Academy and was instrumental in establishing St. Paul’s and the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee. St. Paul’s is noted for its English Gothic style and beautiful stained-glass windows. Franklin’s First United Methodist Church was the first church in downtown Franklin to organize and has worshiped in three locations, all on Church Street. Bishop Francis Asbury preached here in 1812 when the church was located on First Avenue and Church Street. Part of the congregation still meets in the 1873 church on Fifth Avenue and Church Street, but the majority worships at
the new campus on the Nashville Pike and Mack Hatcher Parkway. The Historic Presbyterian Church at Five Points can trace its origins to Rev. Gideon Blackburn when in 1811, the first church was located next to the Old City Cemetery. The congregation moved to Five Points in 1842. The present building was built in 1908 in a Romanesque Revival style. Catholic mass was celebrated in Hugh Dempsey’s home in 1821, but St. Philip Catholic Church was not built until 1871. The first congregation consisted of Irish immigrants, who built the brick chapel at the corner of East Main and Second Avenue. Today, St. Philip enjoys the largest congregation in downtown Franklin. Fourth Avenue Church of Christ was organized in 1833 with seventeen members. Leading preachers of the American Restoration Movement such as Alexander Campbell, Tolbert Fanning, David Lipscomb and Joel Anderson preached here. The congregation built its first meeting house in 1852 and has worshiped in two other buildings on Fourth Avenue. Franklin Cumberland Presbyterian Church was founded in 1871, and the beautiful Gothic-style church, located at Seventh Avenue and West Main Street, was built in 1877. This congregation has maintained a reputation as a “singing church.” Their gospel singings were popular monthly events in years past. Cummins Street Church of Christ was established in 1877, and the
congregation shared a meeting house with the Olive Branch F&AM Lodge No. 4. until 1944. Elder A.N.C. Williams was the leading minister until his death in 1930. Shorter Chapel A.M.E. Church was established in 1873, and the new congregation purchased the Franklin Methodist Church, located at Second Avenue and Church Street. The congregation worshiped there until 1925, when they moved to the corner of Natchez and Fowlkes Street, having built their new church with material from the old 1830 Methodist church. First Franklin Primitive Baptist Church on Hardbargain Hill was established in 1865 and is the oldest black congregation in Franklin and the second oldest in Williamson County. In years past, the Fourth Sunday in May meeting brought hundreds of visitors to enjoy allday preaching, dinner on the ground, and washing feet. First Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1870 and has maintained a large membership in the Natchez Street neighborhood. Providence United Primitive Baptist Church was established in 1883 and has worshiped at the corner of Natchez and Granbury for one hundred and thirty years. Yes, I am sure any of the twelve 19th century congregations in Franklin will welcome you to join them this Yuletide season in celebrating peace on earth and joy to the world.

The living room has always been referred to as the ‘heart of the home.’ It’s where we all gather, making it one of the most important rooms to transform for the holiday season. Adding greenery and foliage is always a great place to start. It’s perfect for dressing mantels, walls and window frames. Faux garlands are also ideal since they won’t leave berry stains on the floor! Not only can garlands be used to drape around doorways, but they can create impressive statement pieces around the home. Candles also come in; they complement any décor, from modern to traditional. Here’s a tip to try with larger pillar candles: circle them with mini wreaths and watch them transform a room before your eyes. Even though a Christmas tree is a tradition for the holidays, a mini tree can still provide impact and is perfect for smaller spaces! Leave the tree naturally green or add lights to create a warm, soft glow. No home is ready for guests without a welcoming wreath on the door. Or why not go a step further and hang a wreath on a wall to bring more joy inside? The rich
ruby red berries will make a space pop! While the decorating list is getting checked off, don’t forget the muchloved tradition of an Advent calendar. They add excitement to Christmas, with a countdown to the big day. Another tip is to follow what’s trending. To light up the festivities, neon is already showing up everywhere this season. Paired with traditional wreaths and garlands, these glowing lights with joyful messages will add a modern twist to classic décor. For additional information, visit lights4fun.co.uk.

AULD LANG SYNE
POP INTO THE NEW YEAR WITH THESE BUBBLY OPTIONS BY GINO SALVATORE WITH FRANKLIN WINE & SPIRITS
What a year! We thought last year was crazy, but the recovery year was just as crazy. The recovery has been bumpy, sometimes confusing and many adjustments were made. Shortages, vaccines and continued virtual communication and work became, and still are, a reality. When I was preparing to teach our Sunday school class for the month of December. My topic is on the meaning of Christmas as seen through the story of “It’s A Wonderful Life” and George Bailey. In researching the story and the meaning of Christmas, I became interested in the last song sung in honor of George: Auld Lang Syne! We sing this song every year at midnight to close out the previous year and usher in the new one. This poem’s focus on lyrics is about remembering our friends, celebrating our friendships, and our connectedness to others. It questions whether or not we should remember those from the past, the good times we had and what our friends mean. It is a time of celebration and yes, we remember those who have been part of our lives. This song just brings to mind celebrating. We toast the past and look forward to the new year. So what better way to welcome in the new year than with some champagne or a bubbly drink? I have provided some options for you to have as you sing this song and celebrate. To all of you, Happy New Year, and may 2022 keep you safe, prosper and continue to celebrate what we have, not what we don’t! Happy New Year from your neighborhood wine store-Franklin Wine and Spirits.

The Dream Team
TOP 5 COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYERS PER POSITION BY BRITTON HEADDEN
The air is getting brisk, the holidays are coming, the work year is winding down, and college basketball is heating up. A number of factors went into determining who made the list: Stats, team’s potential this season, value to the team, and pro potential. So, here is your college Dream Team lineup for the 2021-22 season.
POINT GUARD
SHOOTING GUARD
SMALL FORWARD
POWER FORWARD
There are a lot of good Running Point Guard prospects from Freshman to Grad students, but one, in particular, stands out as an elite player on a strong team: Jaden Ivey [Purdue]. Ivey is a 6’4” sophomore who has proven himself an asset for the Boilermakers. What is impressive about Ivey as a player and teammate is his improvement from last year to this year. So far, his shooting has improved from 39.9% to around 50%, and his assist numbers continue to climb. Ivey is an excellent choice for a point guard who can get his offense the best possible shot.
A familiar name to NCAA basketball fans in the Shooting Guard position comes from Kansas, Ochai Agbaji. This 6’5” shooter can make plays on both ends. Quick hands and a long build have proven Agbaji a detrimental defender, and he is shooting around 40% from the 3-point line this year. A highlight reel chock-full of dunks and sharpshooting shows lots of NBA potential with this one.
In the Small Forward position we have an all-around solid player from Villanova. Jermaine Samuels is a 6’7” forward who can score, rebound, and defend. What else do you need? Samuels is just as comfortable shooting as taking it to the rim. At 230 pounds, Samuels is not one to get pushed around easily. He’s a capable playmaker with an NBA build.
From Duke comes maybe the best Power Forward in college basketball, Paolo Banchero. Banchero is a 6’10” slasher who can shoot from anywhere and handle the ball better than the average big guy. Banchero moves like a wing player with the body of an athletic center. Duke has a weapon in Banchero, and to leave him off of this list would be a travesty.
CENTER At center is the 7’, 285 pounds, Jamaicanborn, NBA-bound Kofi Cockburn of Illinois. Averaging a doubledouble and around 70% from the field, no team has found an answer to this offensive force. Cockburn was an essential piece of the Illini’s March Madness run last season and will be this year as well. He is a more than capable shot-blocker, and having Cockburn in the paint opens up outside shots as well on offense.
BRITTON HEADDEN Keeping Score Britton Headden is a born-and-raised Franklin local and Broker/Owner of Headden Home Real Estate. Britton has a lifetime love of basketball and other sports, including playing and coaching experience on all levels elementary through college.

A SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN INTERVIEWS...
Santa Claus BY JOHNNY BIRDSONG
Upon making it to the first city, I discovered a lot of doom and gloom, all work and no play, even with the children. Here I wanted to bring joy, giving gifts and toys, but so many seemed blue. I told the children, you better watch out, you better not cry and told them why. I was there to bring toys, compliments of The Kringle Toy Makers. I found immediately that kindness, a warm smile and gifts could melt even hearts of ice. Everyone’s outlook changed from bad to good. I wondered…would it last? There was still a lot of ‘Bah humbug.’
Happy holidays everyone. If ever there was a distinguished gentleman that comes to mind this time of year, it would be Santa Claus. Recently, I had the opportunity to have a conversation with him. There were so many things I wanted to ask and learn:
SG: Why do you wear a red suit?
Why come down the chimney? Is your name Kris Kringle or Santa Claus? A lot of why, why, why… We have photographed the main man often but never had a conversation with him. So now, let’s do this: Straight from his own mouth - all the answers!

As I was loading up to make my first pilgrimage from the far North to the nearest city, Mama Kringle gave me my first red (OFFICIAL KRINGLE) suit. I have worn one ever since. Yes, it may be, now, my trademark, but I try and look my best. I love the cheery colors - it matches my personality - and to carry on a family tradition gives me great pride.
On that journey, I met two very important people that would change my life. The first was a beautiful lady who was a school teacher, and she could see all the happiness I brought the children but, also, she was a child at heart… Loving, trusting, caring and believing in good. That lady, Jessica, later would become my wife, and without her, the rest of my story most certainly would never have happened. The second was a man, a magician, who initially seemed mad at the world. But, by showing him kindness and friendship, he shared magical powers with me that I could never have been able to
do all I set out to do without them. After returning home, I began getting tons of letters from children everywhere. I replied there would be plenty of toys if they behaved. With my new magical powers, I could check on them and tell them to be good, for goodness’ sake. Yes, I have always kept a list of each child and what they wanted. The Naughty or Nice thing…well they are all pretty nice.
SG: What a gentleman. I see
as I get older that we all have so many things to be thankful for. A family that loves us and prepares us for adulthood. The by-chance meeting of an individual or individuals that “magically” change our lives and help us on our journey to our destiny and that “very special someone” who becomes our lifelong partner and makes life worth sharing and enjoying together.

Featured Banker WILLIAMSON COUNTY PRESIDENT, WILL POWELL
WITH MANDY GARLAND, FIRSTBANK
It’s rare to find someone who can claim to be a native of Williamson County, but we are lucky enough to have several folks that fit that bill here at FirstBank. This means our customers can work with someone familiar with the community’s history, progress, businesses, and schools. FirstBank’s own, Will Powell, was born in the old hospital that everyone now knows as the place to renew your car tags. After graduating from Ole Miss, Will began his banking career as a teller at the former Cadence Bank. From there, he moved on to Franklin Synergy Bank, where he learned from some Williamson County banking fixtures – Jody Bowman and Jere Pewitt. Will credits the two of them with teaching him the lending ropes in Williamson County. He worked his way up through the various ranks, making him very good at taking care of the customer. So when FirstBank acquired Franklin Synergy in August 2020, Will was the natural fit to become FirstBank’s Williamson County President.
Will believes that banking, at its most simple level, is nothing but a people business. “We are here to serve our community and the people that live within. If we do our job well, then anytime someone thinks of finances, they think of FirstBank and how we might be able to help them get to where they want to be in life.” When asked what he loves most about his job, Will doesn’t hesitate to say it’s the opportunity to meet or talk to new people every day. He loves to hear everyone’s story on where they were born and raised, where they have been, and what brought them to Williamson County. He takes a genuine interest in the people he meets. In addition to banking, Will enjoys travel, exercise, and reading. Combining travel and exercise is the best of both worlds. He most recently scaled Angels Landing in Zion National Park (Utah) and has the pictures to prove it. Please stop by any of our bank locations for help with any of your financial needs, or you can reach out to Will directly at will.powell@firstbankonline.com.

Read Between the Lines
After the shopping is done, the cards are mailed, the decorations complete - perhaps there will be a moment to curl up by a fire and enjoy a good read. And what season has more options than the Christmas season? This is a well-known and probably well-worn list for most, but in case you forgot some of your childhood favorites – head to the nearest bookstore or library and pick up a BOOK this Christmas and READ!
A Christmas Carol CHARLES DICKENS
Merry Christmas, everyone! “Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug!” With those famous words unfolds a tale that renews the joy and caring that are Christmas. Whether we read it aloud with our family and friends or open the pages on a chill winter evening to savor the story in solitude, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a very special holiday experience. It is the one book that every year will warm our hearts with favorite memories of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future - and will remind us with laughter and tears that the true Christmas spirit comes from giving with love. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer ROBERT L. MAY
Every year at Christmas time, young and old alike fall under the finger-snapping, a joy-inspiring spell of this song. Now fans of the most famous reindeer of them all can become acquainted with the original story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, written in verse by his creator, Robert L. May, in 1939. This is an American holiday classic and is a book to treasure and to share, year after year. 74 HOLIDAY 2021

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The Gift of the Magi
DR. SEUSS
O.HENRY
“Every Who down in Who-ville liked Christmas a lot...but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did NOT!” Not since “’Twas the night before Christmas” has the beginning of a Christmas tale been so instantly recognizable. No holiday season is complete without the Grinch, Max, CindyLou, and all the residents of Who-ville, in this heartwarming story about the effects of the Christmas spirit on even the smallest and coldest of hearts. Like mistletoe, candy canes, and caroling, the Grinch is a mainstay of the holidays, and his story is the perfect gift for young and old. Frosty the Snowman JACK ROLLINS
Frosty the snowman was a jolly, happy soul, with a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal! Everybody’s favorite snowman comes magically to life in the pages of this picture book. Featuring the festive spirit and rollicking lyrics of the original song, it’s the perfect read-aloud for this holiday season.
O. Henry’s classic tale of the wisest gifts of Christmas is itself a gift to share and treasure. In a shabby New York flat, Della sobs as she counts the few coins she has saved to buy a Christmas present for her husband, Jim. A gift-worthy of her devotion will require a great sacrifice: selling her long, beautiful hair. Jim, meanwhile, has made a sacrifice for Della that is no less difficult. As they exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, the discovery of what each has done fills them with despair until they realize that the true gifts of Christmas can be found more readily in their humble apartment than in any fine store. O. Henry paints a masterly portrait of unfaltering love, a haven from the harsh world outside. Twas the Night Before Christmas CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE
A Visit from St. Nicholas”, more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas” and “ ‘ Twas the Night Before Christmas” from its first line, is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who acknowledged authorship in 1837.

FRANKLIN BAND COMPETES IN GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The Franklin Band is celebrating a successful performance at this year’s Bands of America (BOA) Grand National Championships in November. In a field of ninety-eight high schools from across the country, the Franklin Band’s halftime show Lucy earned a fourthplace finish in the Class AAA division and a 20th rank overall. The performance pays tribute to I Love Lucy and comedian Lucille Ball. The BOA groups bands into four classes based on the number of students in tenth through twelfth grade at each school. At each competition, class awards are based on scores received during the preliminary round. Bands advance to semi-finals and then finals based on overall score regardless of class.
WCS HIGH SCHOOL MEDIA STUDENTS NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL AWARDS Media students from two Williamson County high schools are in the running for two National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) 2021 National Student Production Awards. Nominees were selected from high school student entries across the country in twenty-five categories. More than 2,000 pieces were submitted from the regional chapters and were judged by industry professionals and media academics.
Each of the students who earned a national nomination won a regional award in the spring. Brentwood High’s Eliza Linney, Noah True and Stuart Beaton are nominated in the Public Service Announcement (PSA) category for their video, One Second. Ravenwood High student Brooks Taylor’s work on the Raptor Sports Report earned him a nomination in the Sports Story or Segment category. The recipients of the award will be announced in a webstream hosted by NATAS in late November. The date of the ceremony will be announced at the beginning of the month.

LIBERTY ELEMENTARY NAMED 2021 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Liberty Elementary School is among 325 schools across the nation, and one of only six in Tennessee, to be named a U.S. Department of Education 2021 National Blue Ribbon School. There are two ways in which a school can be awarded Blue Ribbon status - by overall academic performance or by progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Liberty’s designation is based on its overall academic performance. The work to become a National Blue Ribbon School is intense. For the past thirty-nine years, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has recognized schools from across the country on an annual basis. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years. The 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony is scheduled for early November in National Harbor, Maryland. A total of 302 public and twenty-three non-public schools will be honored and receive plaques and flags.
