Blessed in Abundance “WHEN YOU FOCUS ON BEING A BLESSING, GOD MAKES SURE THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS BLESSED IN ABUNDANCE.” –JOEL OSTEEN

COME SEE US FOR YOUR

Thanksgiving Centerpieces! 227 Franklin Road | Franklin, TN 615.591.7990 alwaysinbloominc.com

Dear Readers, As we all prepare to begin the season of excess and stress – commonly referred to as THE HOLIDAYS – let me just repeat another rhyming word: BLESSED. I use that word often when describing my life and our community. We are abundantly blessed. One area that makes our community so blessed, is our business community. It exceeds expectations, projections and national averages, doesn’t it? When the rest of the country seems to be succumbing to the gloom and doom of a recession and difficult economic times, we continue to shine and drive forward the idea of hard work, diligence and perseverance paying off to provide a good life. Business is good in Williamson County seems to always be true. Of course, there are hardships. Some are not so lucky or able. And to those, we owe our help and kindness. As our community shows, THAT makes us blessed as well; to be able to be thankful we can help others in need. Small businesses in Williamson County consistently and constantly come through in that area. Here at YW, we have spent almost twelve years in business providing over a million dollars in advertising and promotion to our non-profit and charitable friends. And we will spend the next twelve years trying to double that! This issue is filled with inspiring business stories and information that I hope is both interesting and informative. I know I will be reading four books courtesy of four inspiring businesswomen whose knowledge and experience has reignited my passion for my business, how to grow it and be a better leader to the incredible team I have assembled. I look forward to a holiday season filled with blessings and thankfulness for all those blessings. From all of us here at YOUR Williamson – Happy Thanksgiving Williamson County! BUILDING A LUXURY HOME SHOULD BE A LUXURY EXPERIENCE Working with Legend Homes was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made! The decision to build from the ground up can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time and during a pandemic. The Legend team never missed a beat; they made the process so easy and fun with no delays. They are trustworthy, collaborative and their weekly communication updates through the app and throughout the process were superb. They were always available to answer questions and provide great advice even after we closed. We are so grateful for their team and our dream home. We would highly recommend Legend Homes to anyone considering building a new home in Middle TN. Amanda & Kevin

Not Alone

NAVIGATING A DIAGNOSIS WITH WILLIAMSON MEDICAL CENTER’S LUNG NODULE NAVIGATOR

A lung cancer diagnosis can be scary, but at Williamson Medical Center (WMC), no patient has to walk through the process alone.

so I would know ahead of time what to expect. Any time I’ve had a question, I can call and talk to her.”

While Connie is still undergoing treatment, she said having a calming presence in the middle of the uncertainty has made all the difference.

When a lung screening reveals a concerning lung nodule, Laura Taylor, MSN, RN, comes alongside patients and helps them navigate their next steps. Laura’s job is a mix “between a nurse and a social worker.” She tells, “I guide and educate patients who may need a pulmonary consult or a biopsy and collaborate with their physician to serve as a conduit to facilitate their recommended care plan. When additional care is needed, I expedite additional imaging and consults, minimize barriers to care, and support patients’ physical, mental, emotional and practical needs.”

Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in the United States. “According to the American Cancer Society, the chances that a man will develop lung cancer in his lifetime is one in fifteen. The chances that a woman will develop lung cancer in her lifetime is one in seventeen,” Laura said. “Approximately eighty percent of lung cancer deaths are attributed to smoking; therefore, the risk for smokers is much higher while non-smokers have a lower risk. Smoking is one risk factor within our power to change.” Other risk factors include exposure to secondhand smoke, harmful chemicals, air pollution, smoking marijuana and a family history of lung cancer.

To schedule your lung screening or learn more, please call 615.790.4159.

Modern technology allows doctors to look at a patient’s imaging scans, identify abnormalities such as new lung nodules and assess existing lung nodules for growth. Sometimes the lung nodule can be other pulmonary conditions, such as pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, COPD or asthma, that need to be addressed by a physician to improve one’s quality of life. However, there are times when a scan is ordered for a totally different purpose, but the radiologist incidentally identifies a suspicious lung finding. Such was the case for middle Tennessee resident Connie Widener, who sought emergent care in the WMC Emergency Department for a possible stroke. While being scanned for the stroke, the radiologist identified a suspicious lung nodule and with follow-up care and tests with pulmonologist Devin Sherman, M.D., Connie was subsequently diagnosed with lung cancer. Connie says having a guide to help navigate scans, tests and treatments is vital — especially when the diagnosis comes as a surprise. “The diagnosis is so scary, and you don’t know what to do or what to expect,” Connie shared. “Laura sat me down and walked me through all of it 24 | NOVEMBER 2022

This is not an easy journey — but Laura, Dr. Sherman, the nurses and the Williamson Medical Center staff, they’ve treated me amazingly and been there when I’ve needed them. They are very informative and helpful.

The United States Preventative Services Task Force recommends annual screening with a low-dose CT scan for people at the highest risk of developing lung cancer. While Medicare and many private insurance companies now cover lung screening as a preventative service, certain criteria must be met. “The criteria have recently changed,” Laura said. “It now includes current smokers or smokers who have quit within the last fifteen years who are between the ages of fifty to seventy-seven for Medicare and between the ages of fifty to eighty for private insurance with a twenty-pack-year smoking history and are symptom-free.” Since lung cancer may not cause symptoms until it has spread, early detection and routine screenings are vital, and the five physicians who comprise the WMC Pulmonary Group serve as strong lung screening advocates. Tufik Assad, M.D., is the Medical Director of the Lung Nodule Program. He and Dr. Sherman, provide interventional procedures using specialized equipment when lung nodules need to be biopsied.

The Downtown Franklin Association (a division of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County) is ready for all things fall! As a nationally accredited Main Street America program, the Downtown Franklin Association’s mission is to lead the continued revitalization and purposeful evolution of downtown Franklin – in the context of historic preservation – by maintaining a diverse economic base, promoting a unique local shopping experience, fostering accessible and attractive public spaces, and forging partnerships across all sectors. On behalf of the DFA merchants and business owners, we hope you make visiting beautiful, historic downtown Franklin an essential part of your seasonal plans. PUMPKINFEST™ The Heritage Foundation of Williamson County’s thirty-seventh Annual PumpkinFest took place on Saturday, October 29, 2022. This iconic event boasted a full day of autumn-inspired food and drink, children’s activities, live music, costume contests for pets and families along with outstanding arts and crafts – including seasonal and specialty gift items. In addition, the “Scarecrow Crawl” encouraged guests to visit the businesses throughout the footprint, enjoy discounted shopping, and make memories throughout the day. The “Eaves with Leaves” fall decorating contest winners were also announced, with storefront Hester and Cook taking first place this year!

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Every November, Small Business Saturday becomes an important weekend on Main Street. Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Its purpose is to support small businesses and celebrate communities across the country. With Black Friday sales the day before, everyone is encouraged to “Shop Small” on November 26th. The downtown Franklin merchants pull out all the stops to make it worthwhile for guests. Mark your calendar to shop small in downtown Franklin this year! HOP & SHOP TROLLEY To encourage local shopping, the Downtown Franklin Association partners with The Factory at Franklin and the Franklin Transit Authority to provide free transportation with the Hop & Shop Trolley on weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The shuttle is a heated and handicap-accessible transportation for passengers to take into downtown Franklin from The Factory. Running in thirty-minute shifts from 10am–5pm, the festive trolley will be available for guests on November 26th, December 3rd, December 10th and December 17th. DICKENS OF A CHRISTMAS Our thirty-seventh annual Dickens of a Christmas festival, presented by Wilson Bank & Trust and produced by the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County, will recreate the time of Charles Dickens using historic downtown Franklin’s charming architecture as the backdrop. A variety of musicians, dancers and Dickens characters will fill the streets. Guests can expect to see and interact with the nefarious Fagin from Oliver Twist; Jacob Marley, Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the rest of the Cratchit family from A Christmas Carol; and, of course, a Victorian Father and Mother Christmas with treats for children. This is one of Franklin’s favorite holiday traditions, taking place on December 10th and 11th on Main Street this year. We can’t wait to see you there!

THE FRANKLIN THEATRE 32 | NOVEMBER 2022

THE

Jewel

OF MAIN STREET BY AMELIA ROSE SMITH

The Franklin Theatre has been a long-time staple on Main Street. When the doors opened in 1937, it was the first air-conditioned building in town. At the time, admission was a dime for children and a quarter for adults. With a seating capacity of 260 downstairs and forty-four on the balcony, for seventy years, the theatre showed movies of all genres. In the early days, it even served as a Vaudeville-style theater. Over the next seventy years, the city of Franklin changed, but the theatre stood untouched. It was a true artifact from the early 1900s, but, eventually, the charm turned wretched. Then came the Heritage Foundation. Unbeknownst to some, The Franklin Theatre is a nonprofit organization and a division of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County. So, in 2007, when the doors to the theatre closed, the Foundation put its mission statement to work to save and preserve The Franklin Theatre.

YOURWILLIAMSON.COM | 33

The mission of The Franklin Theatre is to provide diverse, world-class performing arts experiences to Williamson County residents and visitors and to be a platform for local philanthropic engagement and education, while providing unparalleled guest service. Eric. “I truly believe that any venue can sell a ticket, but The Franklin Theatre provides an experience. Downtown Franklin is so special that it’s not just The Franklin Theatre experience, but rather the full Franklin experience.” The theatre’s prime location on Main Street allows guests to grab a bite to eat, drink or browse the shops before and after a show. Many theatres today do not have this luxury of a community outside their doors. The Franklin Theatre in the 1940s

Performers such as Vince Gill, Steve Martin, Sheryl Crow, Mac Davis, The Judds, Chubby Checker, Richard Marx, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, BJ Thomas and numerous musicals have graced the stage over the years. And, with The Franklin Theatre in Nashville’s backyard, you never know what local artists will show up to perform or enjoy a show. The Theatre strives to provide a comfortable space for performers, including a green room, tucked away upstairs. The green room is stocked with any and all things the performer(s) may need – complete with a dressing area, a full bathroom and, most importantly, a washer and dryer for those traveling on the road. Eric Dilts says: “The Franklin Theatre has established an incredible holiday tradition of showing classic Christmas concerts and movies in our beautiful historic theater. Our holiday movies and shows sell out as early as July.” People of all ages dress up as their favorite characters to watch movies ranging from White Christmas and It’s a Wonderful Life to Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. To see the upcoming schedule of events and reserve tickets for the best place to see a holiday movie, visit franklintheatre.com.

Save The Franklin Theatre After three years of work — and an investment of more than ten million dollars — the theater re-emerged better than ever in 2011. Now, it serves as a multipurpose venue for music, movies and community events. “The mission of The Franklin Theatre is to provide diverse, world-class performing arts experiences to Williamson County residents and visitors and to be a platform for local philanthropic engagement and education, while providing unparalleled guest service.” 34 | NOVEMBER 2022

This past February, Eric Dilts became the Managing Director for The Franklin Theatre. In 2018, Eric moved to Nashville for the Executive Director position at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Eric admitted that since his move, he has always admired The Franklin Theatre from afar. So, when the opportunity presented itself to be the new Managing Director, he knew he wanted to be considered. “At The Franklin Theatre, our goal is to offer something for everyone,” says

BEATING the ODDS HOW A FRANKLIN SERVICE STATION OWNER SENT TWELVE KIDS TO COLLEGE

N

BY KATIE SHANDS

ear the intersection of Downs Boulevard and West Main Street in Franklin, an old service station sits empty and a bit forlorn. Just down the road, a brick house with plywood-covered windows awaits demolition. These two structures look like plenty of other properties that have weathered the years, but don’t let appearances fool you. Behind their time-worn facades is a beautiful story of how one family rose above their circumstances and created a legacy of excellence that endures to this day.

Our inspiring tale begins with Monroe Booker, born on November 21, 1921, in Hohenwald, Tennessee. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Franklin, where he spent his formative years studying at Franklin Training School on Natchez Street. Seventeen days after Monroe turned twenty, the United States declared war on Japan. He was drafted into the Air Force and spent about three years in the South Pacific. After his discharge, he opened Booker Brothers Service Station in 1946 with his brother, William. The business quickly became a fixture in their community. Monroe wed Mary Pope in 1950, and the couple lived near the service station in the now boarded-up house at 1508 West Main Booker’s service station on West Main Street in Franklin, today.

Street. They eventually grew their family to twelve children, all of whom they supported with Monroe’s modest income from the service station. Monroe and Mary’s formal education went no further than high school, and they were determined to open new doors for their kids. Like so many black families, they had plenty of racial and socioeconomic barriers to overcome, but they did not let anything stand in their way. For example, the Bookers

lived just one house away from the city limits, so they paid extra for their children to attend school in Franklin. Incredibly, all twelve kids attended college— six at Fisk, two at Vanderbilt, and one each at Harvard, Spellman, Tennessee State and Concordia. They went on to establish successful careers in law, social work, civil engineering, banking, broadcasting, teaching and coaching. Not only did the kids achieve academic excellence, they also shined in athletics. Karen Booker played in the WNBA with the Detroit (now Tulsa) Shock, Utah Starzz and Houston Comets. Barry Booker was a standout basketball player for the Vanderbilt Commodores. In 2017, he was named an “SEC Basketball Legend.” Monroe and Mary’s exemplary parenting earned them a letter of recognition from former United States president George W. Bush, a write-up in Jet magazine, and many other accolades, but they weren’t in it for the laurels. As Mary said in one of their many interviews, “I just did what the Lord wanted.”

After about fifty years of running the service station, Monroe sold his portion to his brother. William eventually rented the building to Frazier Beech who operated Frazier’s Car Care there. He was also a pastor at Burns Tabernacle. When Frazier’s closed, the property remained vacant until it was recently purchased by Eric Smith of Valley View Builders.

Chiropractic · Hypnotherapy Homeopathy · Herbalism Wellness Coaching

Eric is renovating the space to use as his company’s office, and while his crews were clearing it out, they discovered a vintage Pepsi chest cooler filled to the brim with encyclopedias. Religious materials, such as sermon notes and a Ten Commandments plaque, were also found. These items likely belonged to Frazier, who last occupied the space, but they are a fitting homage to the Bookers and everything they stood for.

Though dust and grime now coat the former Booker Brothers Service Station, the years have not faded Monroe and Mary’s legacy. To borrow a line from a poem penned by Monroe, “Our success or failure lies in our ability to endure.” That is a truth that will always withstand the test of time.

FEATURE | Styling YOUR Everyday

‘Tis The Season JENNY REIMOLD’S THANKSGIVING TIPS

W

ith the holiday season upon us and decorative styling a hobby for many, there are many ways to elevate your home for Thanksgiving. Whether you are looking to add warmth or need a few creative ways to display your fall feast, here are functional design tips that can make your holiday space one to remember!

Refresh with a new Rug: To dramatically, yet easily, update your dining area for an upcoming holiday, such as Thanksgiving, consider swapping out the rug within the space for a fresh, seasonal look. The rug section at HomeGoods is filled with high-quality and super-affordable finds, most for under $300, which makes it easy to transform spaces throughout the year. For my Thanksgiving table this year, I opted for a natural, textured jute rug with a diamond design that instantly warmed up the space. Tablescape Horizontally: Ditch the traditional table runner styled vertically down the center of your table and double up on color and texture by styling horizontally. For a table that seats up to seven, you should use two to three table runners and can find great options at HomeGoods in-stores and online for under twenty dollars with modern designs and added elements like tassels. Set the Mood with Metallics: Metallics are super on trend right now and something I love to use, especially around the holidays, because it works for any style from traditional to bohemian coastal, like my new home. I used gold decorative accents and tableware throughout my Thanksgiving tablescape, all from HomeGoods, including matte gold flatware, white ceramic plates with a gold rim, “thankful” gold napkin rings and festive

Bonus tip: Use left-over pampas grass and dried botanicals from your flower arrangement as a creative cake topper on your desserts. I bought a plain, white frosted cake from my local supermarket and made it festive with pieces of pampas grass and faux florals I found at HomeGoods.

gold candlesticks and turkeys to further set the holiday mood. Weave in Woven Textures: To complement metallic accents, add texture to your tablescape with placemats. HomeGoods has an array of organic textured or woven options that help add an earthy, warm element to the table. I chose woven jute placemats which are a durable option for a Thanksgiving feast and coordinate with the rug in the space. Create Custom Centerpieces: Take your tablescape to the next level by repurposing lanterns into custom vases for a creative centerpiece. For example, I took large rattan lanterns that I found at HomeGoods for only twenty dollars, then filled them with a mix of faux florals (also from HomeGoods) and fresh florals from my local florist.

Serve Your Thanksgiving Feast in Style: The most important part of your Thanksgiving celebration is the food – serve it in style on an oversized, hand-carved olive wood cutting board. Stores like HomeGoods have a great selection of wooden cutting boards that make for a beautiful display when garnished with kale for under twentyfive dollars. It is also functional to carve your turkey on and can be used for many other occasions throughout the holiday season. Extend your Design: Elements of a Thanksgiving tablescape can be more than just the décor; extend the design to the food served by incorporating colorful casserole dishes and festive serving ware to cook and display your Thanksgiving meal. By adding a few harvest-inspired ceramic serving sets from HomeGoods, such as this unique pumpkinshaped deep dish, I was able to finish off the table with a few wow-worthy pops of color. YOURWILLIAMSON.COM | 43

Create a Cascading Seasonal Scene: Don’t forget to decorate the area around your Thanksgiving table! You can repurpose faux gourds and pumpkins you already have from previous years by mixing and matching with a few new ones on a fireplace mantle or even cascading from within your fireplace (if you don’t plan on using it). No matter your design style, HomeGoods has so many seasonal gourds and pumpkins in materials like woven, wooden, ceramic, velvet, and metallic online and in-store for under thirty dollars, making it easy to choose your favorites to display.

Five Easy Steps for a Welcoming Front Porch: Nothing says “Gather” like a well-decorated front porch display! Using a simple five-step method that is under $250, you can easily put together an affordable ensemble with décor from HomeGoods to make for a grand entrance. • • •

• •

Start by flanking the door with autumnal faux plants to last all season; long styled in wooden and rattan plant stands. Add a seasonal wheat and barley wreath to the door using adhesive, outdoor-friendly hooks. Make the space functional by adding seating like a textured weather-proof pouf or woven side table that can also serve as a display for additional décor. Add festive flair with a fall welcome mat! Layer a sturdy coir door mat on top of a woven outdoor rug for an inviting and warm look. Lastly, finish with wow-worthy, oversized and unique decorations like woven pumpkins and metal and wooden turkey figurines to create an eye-catching welcome.

Patina Home & Garden BY AMELIA ROSE SMITH

P

atina Home and Garden is much more than a store. It is a new gathering place for the community to learn, connect and create in Leiper’s Fork. Owners and couple, Brooke and Steve Giannetti say, “Our dream is to create a place for the community to gather beautiful pieces for their home, to gather delicious, healthy food from our farm shop, and to gather together to learn new skills like beekeeping, floral design, jamming and biodynamic farming practices.” THE PATH TO LEIPER’S FORK Meet Brooke and Steve Giannetti – Soulmates, creators, caregivers and business partners. While Steve attended architecture school at the University of Maryland, Brooke invested her time in decorating their own home and helping Steve’s clients with their interiors. Thirty-five years and counting, and they are still a husband-andwife team. After living in Los Angeles, California, for over twentyfive years, the couple decided to move to Ojai, just northwest of Los Angeles, where they designed their dream homestead, Patina Farm. “Living on Patina Farm, we realized that the spaces we created were inspired by and connected to nature, allowing us to feel more peaceful and present in our lives,” says Brooke and Steve. About seven years ago, Steve began designing a home for a client in the Nashville area. He was moved by the natural beauty as well as the friendly community. Over the next several years, Brooke and Steve visited many times and, with each visit, felt a stronger pull to become part of the Leiper’s Fork community. It became so strong that they thought it must be part of their destiny. So, Brooke and Steve packed up their farm animals and headed east.

THE ANIMALS “When we started our life on Patina Farm, we slowly began adding animals. First, a few miniature donkeys to graze on the land, then a couple of mischievous goats, next, some docile baby doll sheep – they all added their personalities to our days,” says Steve. “When we started looking into applying biodynamic principals to our land, we realized that all of the animals played essential roles in the process…our sheep, goats and cows grazed the land and provided manure for our compost, our chickens spread the manure and kept the insect population at bay, our donkeys kept predators off our land and our pigs ate all of our table scraps.” Before they knew it, Brooke and Steve had a farm full of life. PATINA FARM Patina Farm, Brooke and Steve’s previous family property in Ojai, California, will always be one of their favorite projects. Brooke explains, “Our own homes always provide us with an opportunity to delve deeper into our design philosophy. We test our theories and push our designs to the next level. At Patina Farm, we wanted to see how many ways we could connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. We used the same material palette and connected the spaces with big windows and doors,” says Brooke. They incorporated antique building materials like reclaimed barn beams and antique French limestone mantels to make their home feel like it had been on the property for generations. Through Patina Farm, Brooke and Steve discovered their love for biodynamic farming and living with farm animals. Though they felt a deep connection to their homestead in Ojai, Leiper’s Fork was calling. PATINA HOME & GARDEN Since its construction, many years back, the new Patina Home & Garden storefront has been a gathering place for the community. The building has served as the town’s general store, post office, and, more recently, an antique store. Many memories have been had there, and it will not end here. Brooke and Steve share, “We want to discover local makers, farmers and creators to learn from YOURWILLIAMSON.COM | 55

and allow them to share their knowledge and products at our new shop.” The couple hopes for Patina Home & Garden to be an authentic place to gather – interpreted in many ways. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Nature, History, and Community.

THE MEANING BEHIND “PATINA” “In 2011, we titled our first book, Patina Style, because we love how natural materials age over time when used. It’s why we are all drawn to antiques. They are much easier to live with when you share your home with children and animals!”

Inspired by historical architecture and the unique lives of their clients, Brooke and Steve strive to design spaces that are not only beautiful but feel intentional and personal. “We pull inspiration from Nature (the location of the project); History (the stories our clients share with us about their life); Community (the dreams our clients share with us about how they want to connect with the ones they love).” Brooke and Steve call their design style “Patina Style.” They explain, “We love natural materials and how they age with use over time. We incorporate as many antiques as possible in our design projects because they add their own stories and history to the spaces we design.” PATINA MEADOW Patina Meadow is the new property Brooke and Steve are designing near their store and homestead in Leiper’s Fork. “We have

Above: Steve & Brooke’s Scottish Highland Cows, Clementine and Annabel Right: Patina Home & Garden storefront in Leiper’s Fork Below: Inside the Patina Home & Garden retail store

so many dreams for Patina Meadow. We plan to build a demonstration barn which will include a pottery studio for community classes and a gathering space for other farm and culinary classes.” They also hope to add rescue animals to their existing animal family. “We want to offer forest walks to discover the healing properties of the forest. Of course, we remain open to discovering what the future holds for us and Patina Meadow as our dream evolves.” Brooke and Steve are also renovating the 1850s log cabin on their new property, paying homage to the original structure while opening the spaces to the views of the animal pastures and forest surrounding it. Brooke and Steve will live in the cabin while designing their new home on the property. Patina Home & Garden is open and awaiting guests to gather. Follow their journey on the Velvet and Linen blog at giannettihome.com and on Instagram at @patinahomeandgarden.

WHO: Nashville Wine Auction | nashvillewineauction.com WHAT: Music City Harvest Party WHERE: Cedarwood WHY: The Nashville Wine hosted its first-ever Music City Harvest Party on October 14th at Cedarwood, in Nashville. This new event for the Nashville-based nonprofit was a successful fundraising celebration that followed this summer’s record-breaking l’Eté du Vin, the charity’s most iconic and impactful fundraiser of the year. The theme was “A Fall Fiesta” featuring wines from South America. Guests enjoyed a one-hour auction of wine-themed luxury items, a seated dinner for more than 250 guests, a lateparty for the younger crowd, a cigar and bourbon bar, fire pits and live music for dancing. The Nashville Wine Auction is the country’s longest-running charity wine auction and has raised more than $32 million dollars over the years to support local cancer-related nonprofit organizations.

The True Spirit of Christmas GIVING MACHINES NASHVILLE

C

hristmas shoppers at CoolSprings Galleria will be able to embrace the joy of giving while making the season a little brighter for people struggling to meet their most basic needs. From three #LightTheWorld Giving Machines, visitors can purchase and donate items ranging from clothing, food and hygiene supplies for refugees and people facing terminal illness and visual impairment. Local beneficiaries include Catholic Charities and Tennessee Resettlement Aid, currently serving hundreds of Afghan and Ukrainian refugees who fled with nothing; Angel Heart Farm, which provides equine therapy for families with children diagnosed with chronic and life-threatening illnesses; Achilles International, providing opportunities for blind people to live fuller lives through competitive running; and Graceworks Ministries, which serves thousands of low-income neighbors with the fulfillment of basic life needs and wraparound care. Katie Finn, Executive Director of Tennessee Resettlement Aid, serves 730 Afghan refugees who assisted the United States military and, as a result, were forced to flee their homeland. “Our Afghan allies are here because they risked their lives for our troops, and they came with literally nothing,” Finn says. “We’re hoping to meet basic needs through the Giving Machines, such as pots and pans, bedsheets or a pair of shoes while raising awareness. They are starting new lives here in Nashville, learning a new language and culture while combating isolation and depression. And now we are seeing 60 | NOVEMBER 2022

waves of Ukrainians fleeing their war-torn country.” At Angel Heart Farm, Tracy Kujawa uses horses to give families a respite from the challenges associated with a chronic illness. She currently works with more than thirty families facing this stark reality. Visitors can purchase a riding helmet or boots or feed for the horses through the Giving Machines.

"

We’re hoping to meet basic needs through the Giving Machines, such as pots and pans, bedsheets or a pair of shoes, and raise awareness. They are starting new lives here in Nashville, learning a new language and culture while combating isolation and depression. And now we are seeing waves of Ukrainians fleeing their war-torn country. “You never think it will happen to your family, but when it does, it is life-altering,” Kujawa says. “Our mission is to empower them to have the confidence to get through this fight and to help families reconnect during a difficult diagnosis and illness. As we’re celebrating Christmas, we want people to understand that others are suffering through hard times. This is a great way to help.” The #LightTheWorld Giving Machines were launched in Salt Lake City by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which covers the cost of the machines and associated fees. As a result, charities receive 100 percent of donations made

through the machines. Since 2017, the initiative has raised over $15 million through the contributions of more than 1,200,000 people. Nashville is one of twenty-six cities worldwide to be selected to receive Giving Machines. Carla Parker, a co-chair of the Giving Machines Nashville campaign, says, “In a time when so much is about ‘getting,’ it’s rewarding to be a part of a collaborative effort that promotes the importance of serving and caring for others. Each person who participates with the Giving Machines gives a loving and selfless gift.” Each charity selected five items for the machines most needed by those they serve. Gifts like books, meals, personal care items, fresh food, school supplies — even ducks — are represented by cards in bright red vending machines. Visitors pay by credit card or mobile pay, then choose, just like a regular vending machine. Instead of “getting,” visitors “give” as they select and buy items from the machines. Prices start at $5 and top out at $150. The Giving Machines will be in place on Monday, November 21, at CoolSprings Galleria and will remain through the holiday season. An official kick-off will be held on “Giving Tuesday,” with speeches from government officials and representatives from each charity. For more information about the event schedule or items inside the machines, please visit givingmachinesnashville.org.

TALK TURKEY TO ME A CHAT WITH A GENTRY FARM TURKEY

G

obble! Gobble! I can’t wait until Thanksgiving! All the family is together and there are yummy things to eat… My Momma is careful about what I can have, but I do get certain yummies on Thanksgiving. I used to love turkey too but, now that I know one, I don’t want turkey on Thanksgiving anymore! Turkeys are nice birds! Truman the turkey is a resident of Gentry Farm, in Franklin. I chatted with him about how he feels with “Turkey Day” around the corner, and he had quite a bit to say.

Ollie: Since you don’t have anything to worry about on Thanksgiving, what do you enjoy most about the holiday? Truman: We do tend to be celebrated quite a bit on the holiday and leading up to it. Even though Pilgrims didn’t even have turkey at the first Thanksgiving, we have become synonymous with the holiday. People even decorate with turkey décor! Ollie: You have wings… Can you fly? I only see you walking around. Truman: I can fly, good sir! I can make my way to branches and

get from one side of my pen to the other in flight… But I cannot fly like an eagle – if that is what you are asking. We can fly up to speeds of fifty-five miles per hour and run up to twenty-five miles per hour! Ollie: I feel you are very misunderstood birds. What would you like the readers to know about you? Truman: Presidential pardons for Turkeys became formalized in 1989. I wish more people – not just the President – pardoned us from being on the Thanksgiving table. That would be something and sure would make our feathers relax this time of year! Ollie: I hear that Benjamin Franklin once said the turkey was “a much more respectable bird” than the bald eagle. What do you think about that? Truman: I would say that Benjamin Franklin fellow was one smart man. I believe we would have been good friends. Happy Thanksgiving, folks! And pardon that turkey this year!

INTENTIONAL OASIS

Preview of Southall Farm & Inn 66 | NOVEMBER 2022

By AMELIA ROSE SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRIS RAE & JAY WILLIAMS

“The luxury of time allowed Southall an opportunity to be mindful of how they will showcase local artisans, current and past, and have them work their magic into the Southall experience. All of it was created and curated with a purpose—to do the job well, but also one small way we can acknowledge and honor a job well done.”

L

ocated in historic Franklin, Tennessee and less than twenty miles from Nashville, Southall encompasses over 325 acres of bliss. Southall is set across rolling Tennessee hills and includes a working farm, luxury inn and cottages, a spa, a signature restaurant and outdoor activities. This getaway will offer an escape for guests, or locals, to enjoy an array of experiences based on the property’s core principles of exploration, discovery and connection. THE ROOTS “Southall started with the vision of my wife, Laura, who wanted to own land, grow food to eat and donate the rest to those in need. But having no experience or expertise in farming or land management, my wife and I knew we had to build a team to execute the vision. So, we hired experts across many disciplines and asked them to dream big, to find ways we could create something new and special, here in Williamson County,” Founder, Paul Mishkin shares.

The luxury of time – eight years, to be exact – allowed Southall an opportunity to be mindful of how they will showcase local artisans, current and past, and have them work their magic into the Southall experience. STAY A WHILE According to Southall, “Fulfillment can be elusive; it means something different to each of us, but generally, we believe it centers on well-being. An unforgettable meal, a day spent melting away in the spa, an exhilarating challenge, an extraordinary experience. Memories made with loved ones, bathed in luxury against a stunning backdrop.” This and more can be found at Southall. Southall offers sixty-two guestrooms and suites with modern yet natural touches. The Polk Rooms provide a place to recharge with views of the property’s picturesque landscape. The Cumberland Rooms are the perfect way to end a day of exploration, cozied up by the in-suite gas fireplace with views of the meadow and Polk Creek. Take your stay a step further by staying in the Caney Fork Suites. These elegant and expansive third-floor suites include a king bed, living space, separate powder room and gas fireplace; unwind and enjoy the sprawling scenery from indoors. Finally, the Tennessee Suite is the premier spot to recharge. The 1,529 square foot suite includes a baby grand piano, luxurious bathroom, gas fireplace and conferencing capabilities for small meetings. Not to mention, all rooms and suites have an oversized soaking tub. Southall features sixteen separate cottages for those wanting a more private 68 | NOVEMBER 2022

stay. Tucked away among towering trees, the cottages offer privacy, exclusivity and luxury. “Expansive yet intimate, modern yet rustic, the nine Hillside Cottages offer the ultimate escape.” Each features one or two king bedrooms, a patio and a spainspired bathroom. Guests will savor the open air from their spacious outdoor living area. The two-bedroom cottages also include a gas fireplace and conferencing capabilities for small gatherings. Communing with nature takes on new meaning with the seven elevated Arbor Cottages, which offer a patio and large wraparound deck with an inviting swing bed. Ideal for those seeking a luxurious glamping-style experience, each includes a king bed and a spa-like bathroom. THE FARM The working farm serves as the heart of Southall and is rooted in the craft of growing, raising and preserving ingredients that lead to incomparable cuisine. The Farm is constantly evolving and has a 1,300-tree apple orchard. It also includes hydroponic and conservatory greenhouses, a dedicated seed-saving program, formal kitchen gardens, largeformat crops, and an array of heirloom varieties and heritage ingredients. Not to mention, an abundance of acres for foraging.

Meet the People of Southall Paul Mishkin

FOUNDER “Southall started as a dream to create a place for people to stay and experience all a farm has to offer, and it’s become more than I could have imagined. Southall will be a truly immersive experience, and I look forward to welcoming our Franklin neighbors and guests to this remarkable destination to see what we’ve grown.”

EXPERIENCES Southall will be a backdrop for one-of-akind events and group experiences, including weddings. With acres upon acres of outdoor space, including a manicured lawn overlooking Lake Mishkin, flexible indoor space with the 4,000-square-foot Orchard Event Center, an on-site preservation kitchen (The Jammery), a natural amphitheater and hilltop lookout, the entertaining options are endless. LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN From hiking, biking and running trails through bygone forests to fishing, canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle-boarding, there is an adventure for all! The rolling property of Southall hosts a plethora of things to keep visitors busy; an aerial obstacle course, archery or fly fishing in Lake Mishkin – Southall’s man-made lake. With five miles of trails and a wealth of local flora and fauna, guests can explore the pristine beauty of Southall on one of the guided hikes—or discover it on their own. Did you ever think you would try falconry hunting? You can experience the thrill of a hunt with a falcon perched above. THE APIARY Located above the orchard, near the sundial, the apiary is home to approximately four million honeybees, which live within six apiaries. These pollinators are vital to the health of the farm, increasing harvest yields on a range of crops. Working to reverse the trend of bee decline, Pollination Program Manager Jay Williams and

Shane Pappas

GENERAL MANAGER “Our guests should expect a unique, curated experience that they can only have here. Whether they want to indulge in our culinary offerings and spa treatments, or if they want to get their hands dirty on the farm while they learn about our sustainability practice, there is something for everyone. Regardless of their reason for coming to Southall, guests can truly disconnect from everyday life and immerse themselves in the experience.”

David Mishkin

EXECUTIVE PROPERTY MANAGER “In the early years of Southall, much of the efforts were on trail layout and construction, specifically focusing on the cleanup and safety of the woods. Many of the activities are family-friendly, with various degrees of difficulty. I hope everyone who tries our adventures enjoys the exhilaration and feels more alive afterward!”

Andrew Klamar

EXECUTIVE CHEF “This project has been years in the making, with each detail carefully curated. I am excited for guests to see the culmination of their experience at Southall with farm-to-table meals at Mary Amelia through daily menus.”

Jay Williams

POLLINATION PROGRAM MANAGER “As Southall’s pollination expert, I work to establish and grow new hives in hopes to reverse the trend of bee decline. Our honey has won coveted awards for its complexity of flavor and is used throughout Southall in The Spa, dining experiences and more.” YOURWILLIAMSON.COM | 69

Forged By Fire is a branding bible for anyone wanting to build a personal brand. Whether an employee or an entrepreneur, the goal of this book is to walk you through a step-by-step journey on how to be seen, valued and rewarded. Mila tells, “So many people go through life not reaching their purpose…it is vital to be able to know your gift, share it, market it and be seen. Pieces of Mila’s journey are interspersed throughout the main content of building a personal brand. Her story is one of grit and redemption, of building an unshakeable foundation amidst adversity and rising above it to be better than ever. She shares the painful and inspirational parts of her journey along with a proven framework for navigating hardship and utilizing it for personal—and professional — growth. admits Brittany. “I became obsessed with the idea of creating a framework any business owner could follow to feel that same ‘rockstar status’ reserved for entertainers. That’s what led me to sell the majority interest in my startup, move to Franklin and become an author and speaker!” So, what are “superfans”? Brittany shares, “I define a ‘superfan’ as a customer whose experience with you is so good that they come back and tell their friends. Put simply, superfans are customers who create more customers.” Brittany Hodak is an entrepreneur, professional speaker and author with a background in the entertainment industry. Before launching her startup, ZinePak, Brittany worked with several record companies, exceptional talents and brands. She was even invited to appear on the hit television show, Shark Tank, to pitch ZinePak – centered around creating products and experiences for superfans. She received six-figure offers from four of the five sharks! “Over time I realized the same principles artists and brands use to create ‘superfans’ can be applied to non-entertainment businesses,”

Hannah Paramore Breen is a pioneer in the digital world. In 2002, she started creative agency - Paramore Digital in Nashville. With a fresh business concept, a stunning office in a prime location – the corner of Fifth and Broadway – and an excellent team, why would she eventually end up selling her successful company? Let’s start from the beginning. “Like many entrepreneurs, I became a business owner by accident,” admits Hannah. CitySearch.com was her first experience with a startup. “I loved the pace, the young team and the fact that I learned something every day.” But, after three years, CitySearch was at a turning point, and it was time for her to move on. This was in early 2000 when the internet was young, and the first dot com was happening. Hannah tells, “In those days, it wasn’t hard for me to find a job, but it was hard to keep one.

“But, here’s the thing about superfans: You can’t buy them; you can only create them. How? By creating the kinds of experiences people want to have again and again,” explains Brittany. “The world we live in is so connected, and good businesses don’t stay a secret for long. Customers tell their friends. They come back and bring their friends. A well-executed superfan strategy is one of the most powerful ways to future proof your business because your customers literally become your competitive advantage.”

However, at each job, I learned valuable lessons about how to manage change, how to network and how to unwind a company.” Eventually, Hannah realized she felt safer on her own than working for any of the people offering her jobs, and that is when everything changed. “Things came together quickly. Less than three years later, I had an office (in that prime location) and a handful of employees.” As she was approaching fifteen successful years, Hannah got an offer to buy her share of the company. The crazy part, she was not marketing to sell it! With the guidance of her husband, Bill Breen, PGA pro, she took a leap of faith and let go of her beloved business to pursue new things. Fast forward a few years, and now Hannah is here to help those in the same situation. Business Ownership is the story of Hannah’s exit from

When Brittany started writing Creating Super Fans, she set out to make it “really fun.” She wanted people who don’t necessarily love books to want to read this book. So, Brittany used color throughout the book and song titles for every chapter and major heading. Brittany shares, “And, of course, there are plenty of fun stories from working with celebrities and brands.” The book is about customer experience. It’s a how-to manual that any business owner can use to improve the experience employees and customers have with their business — ultimately leading to more repeat business, more referrals and more revenue. Creating Super Fans will help you define, understand and share your unique brand story. The book includes checklists, exercises and easy-to-implement tools too “Whether you’re launching a career as a recording artist, running a tech startup or helming a hundred-year-old brand, you, too, can tap into the power of superfandom.” Purchase Hannah’s book at Barnes & Noble, amazon.com and Books-A-Million.

her company and the lessons she learned as she handed her business over to new owners. Many people questioned her, “Why would you sell a business you love?” In truth, she grew older and wiser, and what she wanted to pursue evolved with her. Hannah says, “One’s business needs to serve their life rather than their life to serve their business. If you understand that quote, you will manage and prioritize how much time you spend working, the clients you take and the people you hire.” Hannah’s experience preparing for the future of a company or brand is an invaluable resource to professionals of all ages, and her book is just that! Hannah’s book was written from a space of total vulnerability and honesty, detailing her successes and mistakes, the good, the bad and the crazy! COMMUNITY | A Southern Gentleman Is...

Building YOUR COMMUNITY A SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN IS JOHN MAHER

What do you love most about Williamson County? The people. It has been a very welcoming community to me. It is a great place to raise a family, and start and run a business; plus, with four children, the school system – academics and sports – are all awesome! I love downtown Franklin; it has its unique charm. People talk about the Williamson bubble, and I feel like we truly are in an ideal place. Tell me about your family and where you grew up. I grew up in Kentucky with my mom, dad and six siblings. I was the oldest, and she had all seven of us before the age of thirty. In 1972, I received a football scholarship to play football at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) as an offensive lineman. I have been married to my wife, Margie, for forty-five years. We have four children; three daughters and one son, who are part of the family business.

John Maher

BY JOHNNY BIRDSONG

We all know how blessed we are to live in this amazing community. There are so many wonderful things that make it special. I am convinced it’s the people that make the biggest impact. I had the privilege of meeting one of those people who make the difference, Mr. John Maher. As we talked, I not only understood why and how he has been so successful in life and in business but also as a role model and a true Southern Gentleman. 78 | NOVEMBER 2022

Your story of how you came into the home-building business is intriguing. Tell me a bit more. Well, in 1978, I got licensed as a real estate agent. John Green had a local real estate/insurance company in Franklin, and I was affiliated with him most of the time while I was a teacher and coach. I became more interested in real estate and began investing in properties – buying a house and renting it behind us for the first seven years we were married. By the time I quit teaching, we had fourteen rental units. I bought a book by Carl Heldmann, Be Your Own House Contractor: How to Save 25 Percent Without Lifting a Hammer, the latter being the key. So, I borrowed money from a local banker and built a 1,200-square-foot home. After my tenth year of teaching, I went full-time into building. How does it feel to be Spring Hill’s #1 homebuilder for over 30 years? We feel blessed and fortunate. A lot of it was timing – the right place at the right time. In the beginning, it was starter homes. But, as this community has matured, we have grown with it. Currently, we are selling and building the first million-dollar neighborhood in Spring Hill. We take great pride in watching Spring Hill grow and participating in the growth. I project Spring Hill will double again in the next ten years. One in every six homes in Spring Hill we have built, which at this time is about 2,700 to 2,800 homes. A lot of credit goes to my employees; the core people have been here since the start, which is over twenty-five years.

What motivates you? I feel like I am still a teacher and coach at heart, and I have been able to carry that over into the business. I believe I have the God-given motivation to learn and the desire to be better. Also, the people that depend on me motivate me to do my best. What and to whom do you attribute your success? By far, the number one thing was marrying the right person. My wife, Margie, has been extremely supportive through it all. What advice would you give a young you or to today’s younger generation to help them reach their potential and be the best they can be…in life as well as business? The number one piece of advice for young people would be to search for something they really love to do. I have never looked at what I do as a job because it is something I love. If making money is what you want to achieve, find something you are passionate about. If you are in a financial situation to go to college, do it. Surround yourself with high-caliber people. In the words of motivational speaker Jim Rohn: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Find a mentor. The most successful people are the most open in giving advice. In your free time, take Dale Carnegie classes, coaching courses and listen to podcasts to better yourself. What do you think it means to be a Southern Gentleman? Are there individuals in your life whom you feel espouse what being a southern gentleman is? When I think of people that fit the description of a Southern Gentleman, they are business people that care about the community, participate and contribute. There is an intangible quality in the way they carry themselves. Local Southern Gentlemen that come to mind are Ed Moody, Jimmy Gentry and John Green. John Green was influential to me in a lot of ways. He taught me, “you got to let the other man make money… It has got to be fair both ways.” What are your favorite pastimes? When I have extra time, I love walking through new construction sites and homes. I try to work out five days a week. My wife and I enjoy visiting music venues such as The Ryman, City Winery and the Franklin Theatre – table ten is our spot! I also love to watch the Andy Griffith show. Tell us about your philanthropic endeavors in this community and why you feel it is essential to give back. Most of the things we have done have involved children and education. All my children have been blessed to have amazing influences and experiences, so awarding the John Maher Builders Scholar-Athlete scholarships for the past sixteen years to local students feels good. Also, this year marked the fifteenth John Maher Builders Whole Hog Festival in Spring Hill, benefiting The Well Outreach. Those are a few areas where we give back. Additional thoughts you would like to share with our readers: I was honored to be included with an amazing group of local people as one of Williamson County’s Community Partners when we were on the cover of the first issue of YOUR Williamson in May of 2011. AN INTERVIEW WITH

FEATURE | YOUR Community Partner

Matt Largen WILLLIAMSON, INC. PRESIDENT

E

very year, for our annual Salute to Businesses in Williamson County, we take time to speak with Williamson, Inc.’s President Matt Largen about the status of business and economic development in our county and region and what impact the Chamber of Commerce has had in growth and success in the previous year. 2022 has had its own set of challenges and changes for our country and our community. Let’s hear what Matt has to say!

WHAT WAS THE FOCUS AND GOAL FOR 2022 FOR WILLIAMSON, INC.? 2023?

ML: The central focus for Williamson, Inc. is always to help our members grow their businesses and grow the economy of Williamson County thoughtfully and strategically. In 2022, we remained focused on meeting our members where they were because every business came out of COVID in a different place. For the most part, Williamson County businesses have thrived this year. In fact, Williamson County saw the fifth-highest growth of physical business establishments in the country over the last three years. I believe we benefited from people and businesses leaving places that had more COVID-related restrictions and coming to Williamson County. Our focus for 2023 will be to build on our team’s great work this year in helping and supporting our members and businesses across Williamson County. As a team, we set a goal to improve our events and initiatives each year. WHAT WERE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS OF WILLIAMSON, INC. THIS LAST YEAR?

ML: Our work with our schools is always the most gratifying for me because I know we are helping to create and support future business leaders of Williamson County and creating a workforce that makes companies want to relocate and expand in our community. For example, we are working with Williamson County Schools and Franklin Special School District to design and deploy a leadership training program for all elementary, middle and high school principals. So far, we have delivered expertise on setting boundaries and getting organized, the importance of culture in a school building and managing conflict. The 82 | NOVEMBER 2022

program aims to equip our principals (building leaders) with the skills necessary to work constructively with parents, teachers and students.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY SAW THE FIFTHHIGHEST GROWTH OF PHYSICAL BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS IN THE COUNTRY OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT HOME PRICES DECREASING BUT INTEREST RATES INCREASING? HOW MAY THIS AFFECT WILLIAMSON COUNTY RESIDENTS AND THOSE TRYING TO LIVE HERE?

ML: There has been a recent shift in the housing market, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. A slowdown was needed due to the rapid increase in prices. The region is still seeing an influx of cash buyers, but the inventory is still low. From a corporate standpoint, I understand that it is very difficult to recruit talent from outside our area because of the escalating prices and affordability factor. This recent shift will help stabilize housing prices which will help their recruiting efforts and continue to make this an attractive location for companies. While the last few years have increased the size of our collective nest egg for retirement, the market is

returning to some level of normal now, which is great for people who want to move to or move back to Williamson County. DESPITE OBVIOUS CHALLENGES IN RECENT YEARS, THERE STILL SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF NEW BUSINESSES OPENING IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY. HOW DO STAFFING SHORTAGES IMPACT NEW AND EXISTING BUSINESSES? HOW DOES THE CHAMBER WORK WITH LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE?

ML: Staffing is the number one challenge of every business at this point. We are still viewed as a land of opportunity, and we know people are still moving here and returning after college. Williamson County is a great place for a career, and new companies moving to Williamson County create opportunities for our friends, families and neighbors. We work with our members’ companies and connect them with staffing resources in middle Tennessee. We also work directly with anyone looking for a job and connect them on a one-to-one basis with companies we know are hiring. The great resignation has become the great reshuffling, and we regularly share with our large employers best practices to retain and recruit talent. Employee expectations have changed, and companies willing to recognize and adapt to them are winning the war for talent. WHAT EXCITING BUSINESS NEWS CAN YOU REPORT ABOUT WHY IT IS STILL A GREAT IDEA TO OPEN A BUSINESS, RELOCATE A BUSINESS AND BE IN BUSINESS IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY?

ML: The most exciting business news is that we will set a record this year for ribbon cuttings in the midst of the increasing concern of a recession. Clearly, people are still willing to bet on themselves, their businesses and this community. It sounds a bit boring and repetitive, but our fundamentals are strong in Williamson County. Our quality of life is high, and crime is low. We have a variety of housing options, and taxes are reasonable. We have a AAA bond rating, and, more than anything, our public schools are strong. Public schools are still the number one economic asset in Williamson County. People are drawn here because of the schools, and companies are drawn here for the people. HOW CAN MEMBERS–OLD, NEW AND PROSPECTIVE–GET THE MOST BANG FOR THEIR BUCK OUT OF JOINING WILLIAMSON, INC.?

ML: We have such a great team at Williamson, Inc. dedicated to helping our members achieve success, however they define success. We take a very personal approach to help connect people thoughtfully and intentionally to others for mutual gain. When you join Williamson, Inc., attending some of our over 200 meetings and events per year is a great way to meet other people to begin or strengthen business relationships. In addition to attending our events, there are committees to join, like Women in Business, Engagement, Young Professional and Ambassador, that help you connect and engage with other business leaders in our community. AS THE HEAD OF THE CHAMBER IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY, WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND BUSINESS OWNERS?

ML: We are fortunate to live in a place that appreciates the critical role small businesses play in the overall health of our community. Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. I love hearing stories of prosperity and success from small business owners throughout Williamson County. I encourage people to continue to shop, dine and experience locally. 84 | NOVEMBER 2022

FOSTERING

Entrepreneurship IN Education WITH BRAD DENNIS, BATTLE GROUND ACADEMY

I

n today’s ever-changing world, fostering entrepreneurship throughout your child’s education is vital. While an entrepreneurial education builds valuable skills — such as collaboration, data analysis and presentation skills — it also gives students an even more valuable tool for the future: Resilience. As a Battle Ground Academy (BGA) graduate and a long-time faculty member, I’ve seen the value of an entrepreneurship-based curriculum firsthand. Entrepreneurship and inquiry-based learning are the foundation of the BGA experience. Since 2015, we’ve offered the Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL) Program, the nation’s first four-year, secondary school entrepreneurship program, as a concentration. As the new director of the EL program, I’ve seen students develop core competencies such as problem-solving, collaboration, critical thinking and other valuable skills that will serve them well in the future. But the value goes deeper than that. Through the hands-on, experiential opportunities that an entrepreneurshipbased curriculum provides, students learn that they can find creative solutions to real-world problems. There are no right or wrong answers, and when students are set free from those constraints, they find the freedom to be resilient, creative and innovative — 88 | NOVEMBER 2022

skills they’ll need to make our world a better place. Experiential learning gives students confidence and empowers them. At BGA, our students come into the classroom knowing that they have a task at hand, such as real-life critical questions they’re seeking to answer with a local entrepreneur or projects that allow them to create content or ideas our corporate partners may use in real-world campaigns. By fostering entrepreneurship principles throughout our curriculum, our students get the opportunity to dive into the subject matter and engage with it on a deeper level—in a way they never could through case studies or examples alone.

Idea Creation: Developing an idea or finding a solution that answers a need, question or a better way of doing something. This value also exposes students to the design process. Value Creation: Creating something that benefits society. The benefit to society can be emotional, social or physical and may range across a variety of fields, from ecology to mental health and anything in between. This value helps students to recognize that a problem society is facing can also be an opportunity.

In addition, an entrepreneurial approach to education also produces innovators and leaders who are well prepared to face the future, whatever it may hold. You can find numerous articles about the jobs of the future, but we don’t really know what those jobs are going to look like. While helping students build skills they’ll undoubtedly need in the future, an entrepreneurshipbased education also provides students with a framework with which to view their work.

More than anything, an educational approach that fosters entrepreneurship creates a safe environment for students to take risks and find innovative solutions that will make a difference in the future. While we may not know exactly what life will look like in the future or the problems our society will face, we know it’s in good hands with the young entrepreneurs we’re shaping at BGA.

To become valuable contributors in our ever-evolving community, students need to develop entrepreneurial approaches they can apply no matter what problem they’re trying to solve. These include:

BGA’s EL program will be hosting the next event in the BGA Ignite series (previously called symposiums) on November 17th from 9:45-11:15am. Focused on the impact of venture capital in Nashville, the event will feature a panel of well-known Nashville venture capitalists and is open to the public. For more information or to register, visit battlegroundacademy.org/EL.

Venture Creation: The process of turning your idea into a business. BGA really excels in this area through our capstone course, during which students design and pitch an idea for their own company.

THE WIZARD BEHIND JUDY: A GARLAND FRAGRANCE BY AMELIA ROSE SMITH

Vincenzo Spinnato is a Cosmetic Chemist, Certified Nose, Executive and Marketer extraordinaire. With his career spanning over twenty-five years, Vince knows a thing or two about beauty, and his introduction to the cosmetic industry is quite a story! Vince grew up in Vineland, New Jersey, surrounded by his religious, Italian family. Vince and his grandma would routinely watch The Young and The Restless Soap Opera, but, for him, it went deeper than the drama. Vince was intrigued by Jabot Cosmetics – a fictional cosmetic business owned by the character, John Abbott, on the television show. Vince says, “As a young boy, I used my sister’s easy bake oven and pretended I was making cosmetic products like in the show.” His passion and fascination only continued to grow. By age ten, he knew he wanted to create his own line of beauty products. And at the age of twenty, he headed west to pursue his dreams. After studying chemistry and international

business in college, Vince completed a twoyear apprenticeship learning about cosmetic chemistry as well as the national and international manufacturing and retail ends of the industry. During that time, Vince acquired vast knowledge and became an expert in identifying the effectiveness of ingredients and raw materials while working within a team framework. Vince admits, “There are a lot of cosmetic chemists out there, but ninety-nine percent of them are strictly chemists who work behind the scenes. It is unusual to have an extrovert like myself as a chemist. I engage myself with all the chemical suppliers around the world and make them educate me on what is going on trend-wise for each year.” From there, Vince writes a trend forecast detailing what will be the newest and greatest ingredients coming out, which is then sent to companies like Estée Lauder and L’Oréal. Vince has worked with well-known cosmetic companies such as Chanel, Procter & Gamble, Whole Foods, Johnson & Johnson, the list goes on. Additionally, Vince has worked closely with celebrities like Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan and

Seth MacFarlane to develop original products. Jennifer Lopez’s “Still” fragrance and Michael Jordan’s cologne are the two that helped his career take off.

listened to were ‘the Greats,’ Judy Garland being one.” Vince’s late father and grandfather were both talented musicians whom Vince looked up to and derived his love of music from. To Vince’s surprise, three years ago, Lorna Luft, daughter of Judy Garland, got a hold of Vince’s memoir, which mentions his love for Judy, leaving Lorna wanting to know more. After personally reaching out to Vince, one thing led to the next, and they began developing the fine fragrance to honor her mother.

Vince’s latest project Judy: A Garland Fragrance by Vincenzo Spinnato, is his most historic yet. This fragrance was created in honor of the iconic Hollywood entertainer Judy Garland. Vince says, “Growing up in my house, all we

Vince worked alongside Judy’s daughters, Lorna Luft and Liza Minnelli, and her son Joey Luft to design the original scent. “I wanted all three of Judy’s kids’ input to properly honor their mother, protect her image, her work and her legacy,” says Vince. “Each smelling note includes Judy’s favorite things, whether it is chocolate – her favorite treat – or the spices she loved to cook with, like coriander, and even her favorite flower, the rose.” As a result, each key note of the fragrance has a special meaning to Judy and the legacy her kids hope to continue.

This year, on December 10th and 11th, Vince will host a weekend-long event in Nashville to celebrate and debut years of work! The event will include a showing of Vince’s documentary, Skin Deep: Formulating A Legacy, a book signing for his memoir, My Pursuit of Beauty: A Cosmetic Chemist Reveals the Glitz, the Glam, and the Batsh*t Crazy, his skincare line, Vincenzo’s Skincare (Caviar and Diamonds), and most importantly, the debut of the fragrance “Judy.” For more information and to purchase “Judy,” visit judygarlandfragrance.com.
