SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE Enjoy a worry-free ownership experience that includes Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles; whichever comes first. Plus, complimentary oil changes every 7,500 miles.
LUXURY EVOLVED The luxury car experience has been out of balance. World-class levels of performance and design, comfort and safety, quality and craftsmanship are only a starting point. What’s been missing until now is an ownership experience where the excellence you enjoy is equally high - whether you’re inside your car, or virtually anywhere else. In the winged emblem of the Genesis brand, there is true symbolism: Genesis flies by its own set of rules, daring to boldly go beyond your expectations. Isn’t that how luxury should be? Come in and take a test drive today.

Home is Where Our Story Begins Dear Readers, Every year, we present several issues that focus on real estate or home and what makes Williamson County one of the most desirable places to call home in the country. With countless accolades to its credit, Williamson County and its attributes can hardly be discredited. Those of us who reside here, find ourselves blessed to live in a place such as this. When we exist in times of great violence and strife throughout our country, including protests and attacks on human life and dignity by those who seek only to perpetuate hate and disparity about the country which is all of our home, to devastation and loss in natural disasters such as the Texas floods, our own home becomes even more sacred to us. I have said many a prayer these last weeks to please Lord, protect our home. Home is not a building. It’s not a plot of land. It’s not a purchase price or a square footage value. Home, to most of us, is where our story begins and ends, each day, every morning and every night. It is a feeling, a sense of place that defines what home is.
Most of the incredible real estate professionals and builders we have the privilege to work with all seem to have an innate sense of what home “Where we love is home is and why Williamson County is such a unique - home that our feet may and special location, not only to those already leave, but not our hearts.” living here, but to those wanting to live here. - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. It’s not a hard sell - hence incredible housing markets year after year - and when you listen to the Chamber and their sales pitch, courting companies to come here along with all of their employees, it resonates. I enjoyed dinner with family at a friend’s beautiful farm recently. It was literally minutes from the hustle and bustle of our downtown, but it felt like a world away. It was a bucolic example of our home here. Keeling loves to swing and she found the tree rope swing and was giddy with her free flying legs, and her laughter, intoxicating in the late summer dusk, sounded like heaven. It sounded like home. Fellow Williamson Countians, please join all of us here at Your Williamson as we pray for victims of flooding, victims of unrest in other nations and here at home in Charlottesville, and everywhere that hate attempts to permeate good. Make the rest of the world more like our own home - more like Williamson County. Shelly Robertson Birdsong Publisher

LIFESTYLE | Beauty Junkie
BY JULIE JORGENSEN
Is it that time of year already? The change in seasons and the start of a new school year is the perfect time to revamp your bathroom cabinet and even add a spark of school spirit to your beauty routine. Open your notebooks and sharpen your pencils, because we’re going back to (beauty) school.
K C BA TO OL O H SC
FOCUS ON YOUR SKINCARE ARSENAL Now that you’ve finished buying school supplies and whatever else children need these days, it’s time to focus some attention on your skincare arsenal. If you’ve not used a product in a few months, toss it. Are there multiple products in your cabinet promising to do the same thing? Pick the one you use most consistently and throw away the others. Pare down your routine to a manageable number of steps - you don’t need more than a few; cleanser, anti-aging serum and eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen are the basics. The same goes for your makeup drawer: weed out cosmetics you don’t use or have “turned,” cracked compacts, funky eye pencils, etc. BEAUTY “SCHOOL SUPPLIES” Give your makeup bag a rubdown with an anti-bacterial wipe, and rejoice in the blissfully streamlined products that you truly love and use daily! A fun approach to take involves a grownup translation of essential throwback school supplies: pad, pencil, paper. The “pad” is a makeup palette containing shades and products used regularly; the “pencil” a go-to shade (or two) of eyeliner that you can apply in a flash; and the “paper” refers to blotting papers for you oilyskinned lovelies or for those days when the humidity just refuses to go away without a fight. SKINCARE ROUTINE Mamas to pre-teen girls, this is the perfect time of year to introduce a simple but reliable skincare routine. Keep it as simple as possible without sacrificing product quality or performance. Those sweet girls can have some very hormonal, angry skin. Avoid harsh chemicals like alcohol and steroids as much as possible, and aim for a gentle but effective cleansing, toning and moisturizing combo. A mild formula like Cetaphil gently cleanses, contains witch hazel tones without irritating and a high-quality coconut oil soothes while also battling breakouts. 18 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
SCHOOL SPIRIT “But, Beauty Junkie, I love to rep my favorite team on the weekend now that football has started,” you say. No problem, my spirited sweeties! You can incorporate your favorite school’s or team’s colors without looking like some deranged super-fan. A colorful mani always makes for an easy way to show your spirit - I love choosing the alternate shade for my ring fingers for a pop of contrasting color. Another option, especially if loud nail colors are frowned upon in the workplace, is to rock a pedi with the two shades of your fave team on alternating nails. Please don’t use hair chalk or colored spray if you’re old enough to legally buy alcohol. Those cute little stickers in your school’s logo placed high up on one cheekbone are just fine for game day. Should your favorite team’s colors include blue, green, purple, or even gold or silver, a tasteful swipe of eyeliner in that shade, on upper lids only, is another way to show your spirit in a classy way. Do y’all feel a tiny bit smarter? I sure hope so! Go forth into the fall with gorgeous skin and a simple but beautiful makeup routine, showing your team’s colors and all. And maybe rocking that pedicure in a cute pair of open-toed booties! Love,
The Beauty Junkie JULIE JORGENSEN Beauty Junkie

Photography by K. York Monty & Lisa McInturff hosted the Patron’s party for the sixth annual Friends of Franklin Parks “Raise the Roofs” fundraising event. Guests gathered at their home, for a fun evening of entertainment, delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Architect renderings of the newest project at Harlinsdale Farm, the Equestrian Museum and Visitor Center, were presented to the McInturffs as a thank you for their hard work and dedication in returning the horses to Harlinsdale Farms. ALIGN THAT SPINE BY ALISON KANABY, D.O.
We all have habits during the course of the day that wreak havoc on our posture. From sitting at a computer for extended periods of time, to talking on the phone, to slouching while eating. It’s these simple things that add up over time. Having good posture is so important to our overall well-being. In fact, poor posture can, over time, lead to a permanent change in the shape of your spine and cause chronic changes in the muscles. There are simple activities and exercises you can do during the course of the day to improve your posture and your core strength. “But I don’t have time!” is the most common response I get from people. Just think simple...basic. You don’t need a lot of time to do the following life changes and exercises, and they can make a lasting impact on your body and your future! ACTIVITIES AND CHANGES YOU CAN MAKE TALKING ON THE PHONE. With cell phones being so thin, we hold them to our ear and that raises our shoulders up, which causes the spine to rotate and the muscles to be pulled. After being on the phone a while, you will notice your trapezius and neck muscles feel tight. If it’s possible, just put your phone on speaker. It’s a very simple change, but it can save your muscles a lot of aggravation. SITTING AT A COMPUTER. It’s easy, as we spend hours at a time sitting in front of a computer, to slowly let our shoulders drop forward. Then, our thoracic spine starts to curve forward. Make a conscious effort to take a deep breath and roll your shoulders back. This will straighten the spine and return your shoulders to their normal position. It will allow the trapezius muscles and upper back muscles to relax. BASIC EXERCISES Performing simple exercise a couple of times a week will strengthen your core. Your core muscles include your abdominal and back muscles. There are basic exercises that won’t take a lot of time to help you strengthen these muscles. PLANKS. I think a lot of people get nervous when they hear the word “planks!” It’s actually not a scary exercise to do, and there are multiple versions. You can do this exercise at work, at home or at the park. It’s versatile! Lay down on your stomach, resting on your elbows. Then, 22 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
lift your body up, still resting on your elbows, forearms on the ground, and toes on the ground, straighten your back. Tighten your abdominal muscles, buttock muscles, thighs, calves, and pull your elbows to your toes and your toes to your elbows. Hold this for fifteen seconds. Repeat a total of four times. Yes, you will likely be shaking by ten seconds the first time that you do this. Slowly, build this up to sixty seconds. No need to go past that point because you don’t gain any more strength at that point - just fatiguing your muscles more. SIT-UPS. There’s a lot of controversy about sit-ups due to people injuring their neck from holding their hands behind their head. So, there is a different version, a more fun version that your can do. You will need a ball, weighted is best, and a friend to help. Lay on your back, legs straight, hands straight resting on the ground, holding the weighted ball. Sit up, keeping your legs on the ground, and throw the ball to the person standing in front of you. Your friend can toss the ball back to you, and you lay down again. Repeat this twenty times, take a rest and then repeat again another twenty times. Build up, increasing the number of groups that you do. PRONE SUPERMAN. Lay down flat on your stomach with your legs straight, and your arms straight out in front of you. Slowly, raise your arms and legs off the ground and hold for five seconds. Then, slowly lower them back to the ground. Repeat this ten times, and do two sets of this. This can be done in the office or at home. I would recommend having a small yoga mat if you are planning on doing this at work. Core strength is a really important part of your long-term health, and core exercises will help you to achieve it. If you can do these exercises two to three days a week, you will be in significantly better shape than you are today. Just stick with it! Getting into a routine of these simple changes and exercise will leave you with a happier and healthier back, and overall feeling better! Feeling good doesn’t have to be complicated. ALISON KANABY

Photography by K. York The Pay It Forward Festival is one of Spring Hill’s most anticipated family and community events. The festival promotes the importance of building strong community bonds through helping each other and paying it forward. Many civic groups, local businesses, representatives of community services and health and wellness groups, greeted the community with information on the goods and services they provide. Festival goers enjoyed treats from local food trucks, fishing at the pond and listening to the sounds of local talent and getting to know more about the community. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME BY CONNIE HALEY
Coming home. For most of us, these two words elicit feelings of comfort and joy, safety and security, love and laughter. The image might be our current home, a childhood memory or a place we feel most loved and accepted. The positive feelings of coming home, however, don’t have to apply to a physical space. Some folks know how to create a permanent sense of home within themselves. We all know that person who seems perfectly content in their own skin. They emanate a sense of calm and security about who they are and what they believe. They are a pleasure to be around. The stories behind these amazing folks are varied, but they all share similar characteristics:
Mary Schofield, Whitney Sollito, Ashton Chappell, Riley Claire Sollito, Jessica & Cade Robertson, Bowen & Alica Webb, Jennifer Ketchum
Grace, Sadie, Carl, Sue & Michelle Granmatico
Rodney, Owen, Josie, Isaac & Kelley Blankenship
Nallely Rodriguez, Maogan McElhaney, Jennifer Rodriguez, Noley Roberts & Nasia Smith
Kolby Gifford
Worthiness. They know they are inherently worthy. They think everybody has a right to be here and take up space, regardless of who they are or what they have or haven’t done. They don’t hustle for acceptance by trying to get other people to like them or by pretending to be somebody they aren’t. Knowing that worthiness is static, they learn from their mistakes and move on. Being kind to themselves first, makes it easier to extend compassion, acceptance and kindness to others. Boundaries. A foundation of worthiness allows these people to create loving boundaries. They know how to protect their own energy. They have empathy for the plight of others, but don’t take on negative emotions that aren’t theirs. They are respectful to others, but know they don’t have to associate “Just keep coming with people that don’t feel good to be home to yourself. You around. Saying “no” to offers that aren’t are the one who you’ve appealing to them is done without guilt been waiting for.” or over-explaining. When they do show – Byron Katie up, it is with a glad, open heart. Practice extreme self-care. These folks know self-care is essential, not selfish. They don’t outsource the responsibility to others. Taking care of themselves in mind, body and spirit is an inside job. This enables them to give to those they care about from a place of love, without expectations and resentment. Their self-care includes creativity (anything they enjoy and makes time stand still) and following their bliss. Knowing life will have difficult moments encourages them to seek people and activities that bring them joy whenever possible. Feeling worthy and enjoying life is a birthright and available to all of us. Ironically, hard times and challenging life events are often the catalyst for these people to develop this viewpoint on life. Our attitudes are always a choice. Choose wisely, because there’s no feeling like coming home - to yourself! CONNIE HALEY

Historic Homes Along Del Rio Pike BY RICK WARWICK
MAPLESHADE
I never tire of driving out Del Rio Pike from Franklin to Forest Home. I remember my first experience in 1970 driving along this winding byway through one of Williamson County’s finest landscapes. The area was more rural then with broad expansive plowed fields at every turn. I couldn’t wait to catch a second glance of the many historic homes along this six-mile trek. A little over a mile from town I discovered the old Baugh homestead, known as Richmond Place, then in a sad state of repair waiting to be demolished to make way for Magnolia Place Apartments. Originally,
it was the home of Isaac Hilliard, built in 1830, and for many years the home of the Joseph W. Baugh family. The interior was originally papered in exquisite landscape patterns depicting scenes from Shakespeare’s plays and Scott’s Lady of the Lake. The adjoining farm was known as the Y.M. Rizer place with a striking Second Empire house built in the 1880s. The beautiful Mansard slate-roof and double bay windows set it apart from any other residence in the county. It retained the name Mapleshade through the ownership of the Joe Reese family into the 1980s. Sadly, today it is surrounded by a subdivision and Del Rio Pike has been diverted through another subdivision so that it does not pass in front of this old homestead anymore.
RICHMOND PLACE-GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
RIVER GRANGE
Just past Mapleshade, you can see Sweet Home sitting among a grove of trees with a straight-as-an-arrow driveway. Sweet Home was built for James B. Davis in 1845 in a vernacular Greek Revival-style consisting of a one and one-half story brick dwelling surrounded by fields of corn. Its interior alone makes it unique to the county and possibly all of Tennessee.
SWEET HOME 30 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
In the next bend of the road, you will see or almost see among a grove of large trees, River Grange, the 1826 home of Thomas Moore, son-in-law of Nicholas Tate Perkins. In the 1940s, General Jacob McGavock Dickinson bought the farm and renamed it Traveler’s Rest, after his former home in Nashville. The Arabian horses from Dickinson’s stables were nationally acclaimed.
TWO RIVERS
Passing by Cotton Lane, you will next approach Two Rivers, the home of Nicholas Tate Perkins, built in 1820, a plain Federalstyle two-story brick. In 1848, Two Rivers became the home of the Simon Shy family of Kentucky. A son, Lieutenant Colonel William M. Shy of the 20th Tennessee Infantry CSA was killed at the Battle of Nashville and his body was returned home in an iron casket and buried in the back yard. Grave robbers vandalized the sanctity of Lieutenant Colonel Shy’s grave in 1978 causing an outcry across middle Tennessee. Unfortunately, a crime never solved.
MEETING OF THE WATERS
After crossing the West Harpeth River bridge, you will approach Meeting of the Waters, the home of Thomas Hardin Perkins, built in the first decade of the 19th century. Thomas Hardin Perkins was considered the richest man in Williamson County with iron furnaces, more than three-hundred slaves and over a thousand acres of rich farmland. Below the house, one can see the confluence of the Big Harpeth and West Harpeth Rivers, giving the house its romantic name. Around another bend in the road, you will come to Old Hillsboro Road and the sleepy community of Forest Home. You are encouraged to take a Sunday drive along Del Rio Pike to witness for yourself its beauty but please respect the privacy of the owners of these magnificent historic homes. Warning! Watch out for bikers, they too enjoy this glorious landscape.
RICK WARWICK Days Gone By | historicfranklin.com Rick has lived in Williamson County since 1970 and has been serving our community for many years. He currently serves as the Williamson County historian at the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® PROVIDES VALUE TO THE COMMUNITY BY LISA WURTH
As Williamson County continues to grow, so does the Williamson County Association of REALTORS® (WCAR). It’s been a busy and exciting 2017 thus far, serving our Realtor® member family. Joining WCAR this year to lead the organization, is Executive Vice President, Rob Wigton. Rob has more than twenty-two years of experience in various parts of the real estate profession. Rob has served as the CEO of both state and local associations. He was the CEO of the Nevada Association of REALTORS® from 20092013, and was most recently the CEO of the Greater Gateway Association of REALTORS® in Glen Carbon, Illinois, outside of St. Louis, Missouri. “As the search committee was interviewing me a couple months ago, I told them that within a few months I wanted our membership to be able to proudly proclaim that we belong to the very best local REALTOR® association in the state of Tennessee! Living up to that pledge is what drives me each day,” says Rob. The real estate market in Williamson County continues to be a thriving, challenging market. In July, Williamson County residential single-family home sales experienced the highest median sales price year-to-date at $489,900. “The tremendous growth, along with lower than needed housing inventory, is creating multiple offer situations,” says Lisa Wurth, President of Williamson County Association of REALTORS®. “Our members take pride in helping their clients find that perfect home but also understand that this fast-moving market needs experienced and educated professionals that know and understand real estate contracts and are equipped to accurately price housing for this current market,” reiterated Lisa. There are many ways REALTOR® members represent their clients. Here are just a few: Fiduciary responsibility. When you work with a REALTOR®, their fiduciary responsibility is to you. That means you 36 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
have an expert who is looking out for your best financial interests, an expert who’s contractually bound to do everything in their power to protect you. REALTORS® operate according to a strict code of ethics. In place for more than 100 years, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics ensures that consumers who work with a REALTOR® are treated professionally and ethically in all transactionrelated matters. Complex, ever-changing real estate regulations. Buying or selling a home is not like purchasing a plane ticket. Every home is different, and laws change every year and vary from state to state. Generally speaking, people purchase a new home every seven to ten years, and a lot can - and usually does change between transactions. REALTORS® are immersed in real estate, and they must stay current with all the updates in regulations, laws, contracts and practices. Once you retain your REALTOR®, they put that knowledge to work for you. Contracts and negotiations. In this fastmoving Williamson County market, it’s not uncommon for a home to have multiple offers on it. While that seems like a slam dunk for a seller, it can also be very confusing and create a great deal of stress for the seller. Because REALTORS® are committed to a high level of standards, they are constantly keeping their education up to date regarding changes in the marketplace that could affect their client’s offers. This allows them to help navigate these complex documents and craft an attractive offer that makes sense for you if you’re a buyer
and to help coach you through how best to approach multiple offers if you’re a seller. REALTORS® represent their clients, but they are also standouts in the community as well. Recently, the REALTOR® Good Works Foundation (RGWF), WCAR’s local philanthropic arm, donated $30K to the Franklin Special School District to enhance the playground for the kids of Williamson County. RGWF has granted a total of $210,000 since its inception in 2007, via scholarships to graduating seniors and promoting fine arts education in Williamson County Schools. The Foundation also hosts a Student Art Competition in partnership with Williamson County Medical Center that is open to all high school students in Williamson County. WCAR has numerous fundraisers throughout the year including the next fundraising event, the WCAR’s twenty-ninth annual Golf Scramble at Hideaway at Arrington, a beautiful golf facility tucked away in the rolling landscape of Arrington. This event is always a good time and brings together hundreds of local REALTORS® and business professionals to support the rewarding work of the REALTOR® Good Works Foundation. For more information about the 2017 WCAR Golf Tournament, contact Tiffany Claxton at tiffany@wcartn.org or visit their website at wcartn.org/events.

FEATURE | From Our House to Yours
The Andersons LOCAL REALTORS CREATE DREAM HOME WITH “HOUSE HUNTERS RENOVATION” BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM
Two of Williamson County’s very own favorite realtors - who also happen to be married - were recently featured on HGTV’s show “House Hunters Renovation.” Cameron and Reid Anderson have each worked in real estate for several years, giving them many advantages for when they were ready to find their new home together. They had been residing in Reid’s home, or “bachelor pad” as Cameron described it, and it was time to find a home they could make into their own while blending both of their styles. They both wanted a house with character, but with the ability to renovate - and they were willing to show it all on national television. Their “House Hunters Renovation” journey actually began with clients that Reid was working with at PARKS Realty. In October 2016, House Hunters approached the PARKS Realty office and asked if any agents had clients looking to buy a home in the greater Nashville area that was in need of updating, and with the willingness to participate in filming for the show. Reid thought of some of his clients initially, but they decided to go with new construction instead of a reno project, which had Reid and Cameron toying with the thought they might be willing to do the show themselves. “We jokingly let ‘House Hunters Renovation’ know that, although my clients no longer fit the bill, we found ourselves searching for a historic home in Franklin to renovate. . . Surprisingly, they asked us to audition in their place. We started the auditions at the end of 2016, then found out early 2017 that we had been selected to be featured on one of their episodes,” explains Reid.
“The show is like a live scrapbook of the whole process; House Hunters did a great job of showcasing everything! Reid and I would love to have our own HGTV show one day about Williamson County. We think Franklin could make for a fabulous series!” When it came to finding a house that fit their needs but also needed a facelift, Reid and Cameron knew where they wanted to be located and worked off their strengths and differences to find the perfect place. “If you have seen the episode, you see that Reid and I are polar opposites. Reid is steady, methodical and grounded in all his decisions. I am the creative thinker, but tend to be impulsive,” Cameron says. “The one thing we absolutely knew was that we wanted to be as close to downtown Franklin as possible. We think it’s the best place in the world! As we were searching, I would show Reid homes that were in the area that had character then share ideas for what we could do to renovate. Reid would piece in the logic and plan for the project. He was great at taking a vision and playing out if and how we could make it happen.”
They did finally find the perfect house and project located right in the heart of Historic Downtown Franklin. The stone bungalow-style home had character and potential for their visions to come to life. After the home purchase began, so did the renovation journey with a camera crew to boot. Those that know Cameron and Reid, or that watched the show, were entertained by the dialogue, sense of humor and family dynamics seen throughout the episode. “If you’ve met us, you know the Anderson’s are the life of the party! In all honesty, we think having a family so centered around real estate was the most interesting perspective. Our family has three agents on board who are knowledgeable about the market and the industry so it made for fluid conversation. It was strange being on ‘this side’ of the contract - but we had fun being the buyers for a change,” says Cameron. Viewers were also right there feeling the pain of unexpected expenditures and challenges that the couple faced during the renovations. “The tight timeline was a big challenge! We were fortunate to have Majors Construction doing the renovation. They actually finished the project early and did a wonderful job! Also, Reid and I undertook a few smaller projects of our own. . . Needless to say, we won’t be doing that again! Other than that, as many buyers are experiencing, increasing prices in the housing market limited our overall home selection,” Cameron explains.
Luckily, Cameron and Reid had the help of Reid’s parents, Danny and Teresa Anderson, as well as interior designer JoAnne Haynes. They truly appreciated having her expertise in bringing their styles together in the spaces and creating the beautiful finished look. Cameron says, “If you are designing a new or existing home, JoAnne should be a key player in your crew. She solidified our vision, was a great mediator, and helped us make decisions that would allow us to enjoy our home for the long term. We are extremely appreciative of her and her team. I think everyone’s favorite part of the episode was the charcoal gray sink! Which, by the way, is also made of quartz so you can throw in hot pans and it will not scratch. See, the lady knows best!” Reid and Cameron had to keep their renovated home out of the spotlight until the show aired on August 5th on HGTV. They threw a viewing party and invited close friends and family over to witness their big television debut, while also showcasing the many changes made to their historic house. They loved being able to share their journey with everyone and also really enjoyed the filming process. “We loved the limelight! The best part was getting to see the project really come alive on the screen,” explains Cameron. “The show is like a live scrapbook of the whole process; ‘House Hunters’ did a great job of showcasing everything! Reid and I would love to have our own HGTV show one day about Williamson County. We think Franklin could make for a fabulous series!”

IT’S NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL WITH THIS GREATER NASHVILLE AREA REALTOR THE INNOVATIVE WAY ONE REALTOR IS HELPING HIS CLIENTS BUY THEIR DREAM HOME BY HELPING THEM DISCOVER THEIR DREAM LIFESTYLE It’s not business as usual with this greater Nashville area real estate expert. Every good realtor in middle Tennessee knows that homes are a hot commodity in the AARON DWYER greater Nashville market, and realtor, Aaron Dwyer, with EXIT Real Estate Solutions and Team Leader of The Music City Home Team, knows first‐hand he is not just selling a home, he is selling a lifestyle. As a fourth‐generation native Nashvillian, Aaron specializes in listing and selling golf course, luxury and lake front homes. Proud of his hometown, Aaron was determined to show his clients, many of whom are from outside of the area, that a home on the lake is more than just a beautiful view, that lakeside living in Nashville is an entire lifestyle. So, Aaron recently purchased a Sea Doo Speedster 150 and began showing homes from the lake as well as from the front door, giving his clients a perspective of lake front living from the water.
“I wanted my clients to experience what it would feel like to pull into their dock and walk up to their home after a day on the lake. It’s incredible. You can’t duplicate that feeling of overwhelming satisfaction any other way. My clients love it and I love sharing the experience with them,” says Aaron. Since including this added client service with home showings from the water, Aaron has had more listings and lake home viewings than at any other time in his career. “Business is good and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Buying a home is so much more than just buying a house or a piece of property. For my clients, it is about experiencing and living life the way they want; having a place to get away from the grind of a busy day and enjoying time with family and friends,” Aaron explains. AT A SLOW TEMPO WITH
Adagio BY SHELLY ROBERTSON BIRDSONG
I have been traveling to the Florida Panhandle for nearly four decades and while I have always had favorite resorts and locations where we stay, I have had the luxury of sampling, so to speak, many of the different options while enjoying this little slice of beach heaven we call the Gulf Coast. In recent years, my family had the pleasure of staying in a beautiful seaside condo at the Adagio on 30A. At a slow tempo - the definition of the word “adagio,” is spot on when it comes to this luxurious property nestled conveniently near both Rosemary Beach and Seaside. When we walked out the patio door from our condo, we were greeted with the ocean. Right there. The slightly elevated view was breathtaking and we were within steps of white sand and that gorgeous water. Oh, and then there was the other water right before our eyes - the oceanside infinity pool that was literally outside our door. We felt like we had our own pool in our very own backyard oasis.
We must have timed it exactly right, because the slow tempo of our week at Adagio was impossible to miss and not often replicated at any other rental property location we have stayed in. I couldn’t believe we had not found this place sooner. So very peaceful and tucked away off bustling 30A, you could almost forget you had a vast array of dining, shopping and recreational opportunities within walking distance. Laying by the pool, it was virtually silent and the beach was hardly occupied. It was blissful. Granted we were there during off season and clearly the parking lot was full, but it just had a veil of peacefulness wrapped around it. Our condo was incredible. Most of the units here are made for family or group stays as they have three to four bedrooms and some have extra bunk areas, so kids are welcome! All the amenities you could want are here, including, in addition to the ocean front pool, a larger resort style, familyfriendly pool, workout facilities and onsite grills. Again, it is within walking or biking distance to restaurants and shops, accessible to the nearby airport in Panama City as well as the multiple roadways that lead from middle Tennessee straight to this heaven on the Gulf. Another great thing about the Adagio is that our rental was managed by Southern Rentals & Real Estate and they have an onsite office at the Adagio community, a nifty smartphone app to help you with everything from check in, to restaurant ideas and beach rentals - any and all needs you may have will be met. If you are ready to enjoy a vacation “at a slow tempo,” contact Southern Rentals today and book your next stay at Adagio or any of their other amazing rentals on the Gulf Coast. Who knows, we may run in to you. . .
If you are looking to rent at the beautiful Adagio community or anywhere along scenic 30A, our choice for accommodations is Southern Rentals & Real Estate. They have an office onsite at Adagio and represent properties all along the coast in most of the South Walton beach communities. Learn more by visiting southernresorts.com. To view the property and see units available at Adagio go to, adagiogulfrentals.com. If you want to invest in the area, Brad Shoults, owner and broker with RE/MAX Southern, is the goto guy. With over twenty years of real estate experience and a local, he knows real estate. YOUR JOURNEY HOME BEGINS WITH
CASTLE HOMES With more than twenty years of building experience, founder and president of Castle Homes, Alan Looney, creates dream and “castle like” homes for his clients throughout middle Tennessee. Alan was inspired at a young age to create the beautiful homes he does today. “Growing up in Weatherford, Texas, my high school was very unique and offered architectural drafting and mechanical drafting classes which ignited my love for building. I actually won a contest as a senior and went on to continue my studies in college. Ultimately, I earned an engineering degree and began my career in cost-estimation for General Dynamics. Now, after building homes for the past twenty-five years, this attention to cost and to detail is one of the foundations of Castle Homes which clients greatly appreciate and respect,” Alan explains. The Castle Homes team are more than just home builders. They strive to connect with their clients, the community and build
relationships with everyone they work with. It is important to them that your dream home is carefully constructed and that all your elements of the home have fallen into place. Before they begin their work, they connect with their team and interior designers to discuss budgets and make sure their clients know what they are working with. “Castle Homes has distinguished itself from other firms with our design-build expertise and we produce a gorgeous home with a guaranteed price. This process is so much more enjoyable for the client as it takes out the unknown from what they are receiving and what they are spending. We don’t have unforeseen overruns due to our estimating and level of detail before the first speck of dirt is moved. Our love for architectural integrity also sets our homes apart. From English Tudor and French to Contemporary and Italianate, we capture unique architectural elements with a style that ultimately reflects the way in which our clients live,” Alan says. Castle Homes’ professional project managers and degreed interior designers utilize the design build process with meticulous pre-construction planning, comprehensive budgeting, combined with the latest in client interfacing web technology to produce master craftsman homes of timeless quality. As certified green professionals, Alan and his team ensure each home operates with energy efficiency within the standards set by the United States Green Building Council. Alan and his wife and partner, Heather, are also members of a national builder peer group where they regularly travel to major markets in the United States and Canada to learn about new standards, technologies
and trends in the custom home-building industry. Alan’s achievements have been accomplished as he weaves his industrial engineering background and cost analysis experience to create a synergy of impeccable detail and quality for Castle Homes’ custom building and neighborhood developments. In 2012, Castle Homes was named Southern Living magazine’s Custom Builder of the Year for their work producing the Nashville Southern
Living Showcase Home. This honor helped land Castle Homes the prestigious build of the nation’s only 2013 Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel in Nashville – the magazine’s most ambitious build to date. The team followed this up with the hugely successful Nashville Symphony Show House benefiting one of Nashville’s greatest treasures. The team will return for the Pinnacle Financial Partners Parade of Homes in the new Witherspoon neighborhood of Brentwood, Tennessee and will run from October 7th through the 22nd. “Inspired by the great British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, our English Country Parade of Homes house will be unveiled in October and will be stunning. With incredible craftsmanship and an ode to the English Arts & Crafts vernacular, the home weaves outside and
the inside architecture seamlessly with a very livable floor plan. I’m very proud of our in-house designers for the great attention-to-detail in the three-level home as well as our entire building team. When Rozanne Jackson and her Iron Gate team finish styling the interiors and adding their gorgeous furniture and furnishings, it will be a real show stopper with tons of great inspiration for visitors,” Alan says. Being involved with the community is very important to Alan and his team. “We’ve been blessed by incredible growth and relationships. Giving back to our community is a priority. Annually, we sponsor and assist with a Habitat for Humanity build. As we began launching premier home events, the Ronald McDonald House benefited from our Southern Living Showcase House. St. Jude’s was the benefiting charity from our build of the national Southern Living Idea House,” he says. “Most recently, we established the Nashville Symphony Show House benefiting one of our city’s greatest treasures. One of the foundations of our country’s economy is home building which grows businesses and jobs, helps people achieve the America dream; and, it is right that part of this equation for a home builder includes giving back to our community.” Alan loves calling Williamson County home and is honored to be a

His commitment to his clients and team is relevant in the Castle Homes built. “Most people agree that Williamson County and middle Tennessee are great places to live, work and play. The people are friendly and Castle Homes is honored to be creating houses and communities which reflect this unique way of life. Ultimately, we aren’t just building a home for today but creating a house which will be part of the future architectural history of the area,” he says. Alan says that the homes they create are based on historical precedent with a fresh design perspective, which achieves a home with architectural integrity reflecting the way in which families want to live today. “We are proud of every home Castle has created for our valuable clients who have become friends and our greatest supporters. Our homes have earned local and national media coverage and we think they are all beautiful, award-winning and cover worthy! HOW TO BUDGET FOR
Wedding Invitations BY ALYSSA DICICCO OF NASHVILLE BRIDE GUIDE
Wedding invitations are your guests’ first impression of your wedding. And this is why having a great stationer to work with like Nashville’s Paperkuts Studio is key! From personalized invitations to place cards to menu cards, we have so many incredible wedding stationers here in middle Tennessee that can create custom designs specific to your wants and needs for your wedding. But here’s where it gets a little tricky with invitations and paper goods - pricing. How much should you be spending on your invitations? Let’s break it down with Kim of Paperkuts Studio and get real with the numbers of how much your invitations should cost. So, let’s get to it! How much should you spend on your wedding stationery? Kim with Paperkuts Studio says, “Well, it’s a hard question to answer! However, statistics show the average wedding costs around $30,000 and your stationery budget should be between four to eight percent or more. Budgeting between $1,500-$1,800 is a good rule of thumb based on the average wedding cost.” What are the must haves for your wedding invitation suite? According to Kim, the invitation and RSVP card are first and foremost. From there, you can add a reception card, accommodations card, directions card, or even a Nashville area map depending on your budget and your vision. Thank you cards and save the dates are also items your stationer can help you design to go along with your main invitation suite. Expanding to your place cards, menu cards and more for your wedding day is something your stationer can price out for you as well. Remember - the key is to be cohesive! 58 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
What’s another way you can save on your invitations? “Ensuring your guest list is accurate and confirming that the information on the invitation is correct - location, time, names - is crucial!” says Kim. Re-ordering paper, reprinting and redesigning your invitations because of a typo is not an ideal situation. Proofing your invitations with your stationer before printing is a must! “The best money saving tip is to stick with your budget,” says Kim. Many brides tend to see an invitation on Pinterest that they fall in love with at a higher price point. The key is to not only be flexible, but be original! It’s great to find inspiration for what you like and don’t like. And there’s no shame in showing those images to your stationer. However, get creative and work as a team to take elements from those inspirational invitations and mix them with your own wedding aesthetic to create something completely unique and within your budget. What’s the final word of advice? “Most of all, relax, savor the moments and enjoy the designing process!”

First Impressions FROM REAL ESTATE TO RETAIL, A WELL-DESIGNED SPACE CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE BY KELLY OAKLEY
This month, we are hoping to help you understand how and what your home looks like when a stranger walks in and decides whether or not to purchase your home. It’s all about how it looks. It’s what we call “staging.” Staging is most commonly used when you’re a builder or realtor and you’re trying to sell a brand-new home. Our team at ReFresh Home has found a way that home-staging can benefit a wide variety of clients and homes. From new-construction to pre-owned and from vacant to occupied, we’ve tackled a little bit of everything. When talking about staging, the target to consider is your audience; the home-buyer. At a glance, it might seem like the only thing real estate and retail have in common are sales. However, just like a clothing store, potential home buyers are shopping for something that fits their needs. So, when you’re ready to open up the house and show the masses what you’re working with, here’s what we recommend you consider. FINISH SMALL PROJECTS We get it. We all have our list of “honey-do’s.” Maybe it’s that one outlet in your guest bedroom that quit working or maybe it’s the wobbly faucet in your bathroom. There always seems to be something that needs fixing, but other activities and events can top these chores. If you’re a builder, you might have a similar list of punch-items and you’ve been bugging your subs to get out to the site. FINISH THAT
LIST. If you run a clothing store, you aren’t going to call it your best item if it’s missing a button or has a small hole in the sleeve. That’s what the clearance rack is for. Your potential buyer doesn’t want to come into their new home with a list of to-dos. Trust us, they will accumulate their own list rather quickly. DE-CLUTTER Do you know what it’s like to walk into a new clothing store, but every rack is over-packed? There are clothes falling off their hangers and you can’t get to your size without knocking items on to the floor. It’s overwhelming. You can’t even see past the clutter to what you’re searching for. No matter how much you love that store or the actual quality of the product, the experience has automatically been cheapened - and it seems that what you’re purchasing might not be worth the price. It’s the same when shopping for a home. Make sure when a buyer walks into the home, they’re seeing the house and its unique features. Anything that distracts from the quality of the home instead of contributing should be removed. CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN It might seem like common sense, but so many of us have those small problems, like the little bit of dog hair or saw-dust on the baseboard we keep overlooking. Don’t overlook it. Your buyer is going to check

PERSONAL TOUCHES For our staging team at ReFresh, there is a difference between “personal touches” and “personalized.” We find it important to incorporate small details such as a painting in the upstairs hall or a throw on the arm of a sofa. These items make the home feel warm and welcoming, helping the purchaser process the property as a livable space. It’s like the difference in selling a t-shirt that reads “Franklin local” vs. “Tennessee local.” You want to identify with the buyer, creating something that feels special and unique without ruling out all of those shoppers who were born in Tennessee, but not in Franklin. When your home is too personalized by having very specific style elements, too many family photos, an abundance of cultural or religious accessories, it’s easy to make a space feel foreign to a large portion of your audience. If a potential home owner feels like they’re intruding on someone else’s space, it’s going to be difficult to see the house as their home. We hopes this helps you create the best, first impression of your home.
KELLY OAKLEY

over this house with a fine-toothed comb. For a home buyer, it’s likely they are investing at least a good chunk of their savings into this property. Although dirt can be an easily solved problem, it also makes the overall impression of the home a little disappointing. Now that we’ve addressed your job as the seller, we can get to the staging guidelines. DESIGNATING MULTIPLE TYPES OF SPACES If you are running a clothing store, you’re going to rely on repeat customers. You can’t operate a successful business by selling twenty varieties of floor-length red dresses or fifteen varieties of blue suede suits. You need to have a lot to offer. A consumer only needs so many formal outfits. That’s why you make sure you offer items that appeal to other areas of life. Houses have to be able to do the same thing. They need spaces for work, sleep, to relax, play and entertain. At ReFresh, we like to make sure the home feels livable and functional by designating different spaces for different purposes. Not every room needs to be the same. USING APPROPRIATE FURNITURE There are two aspects to selecting furniture that is appropriate for the space, style and size. Your furniture should fit the home just like an outfit fits you. Not just any outfit; THE outfit. Your go-to that never seems to go out of style and always fits you just right. Let’s face it, many buyers will walk through your home and think that because the furniture layout is strange, it means the floor plan or room sizes are strange. Similarly, they can often be so distracted by the style or size of the furniture that their opinion of the staging becomes their opinion of the home.
SOCIAL | Franklin Hot Air Balloon Festival Photography by K. York The Westhaven community of Franklin presented the second Franklin Hot Air Balloon Festival to an estimated crowd of 5,500 people. Food trucks and local vendors lined the streets with delicious treats and unique goods. The family-friendly event had a kid zone with inflatables, face painting and games. There was live music, canoe rentals and a beer tent. At dusk, all eyes were on the east bank of the lake as the festivities’ main attraction unfolded. One by one, five hot air balloons were inflated entrancing the young and old alike. For information on the event, visit franklinballoonfestival.com.

LOCAL REMODELING COMPANY SHINES ON NATIONAL TELEVISION Whitestone Custom Homes and Remodeling company, located in Franklin, recently had the opportunity to work with HGTV’s “Property Brothers,” on several projects they were working on in middle Tennessee. Chris Veal and his team from Whitestone Enterprises, LLC, will be featured on three episodes of HGTV’s fifth season of “Property Brothers: Buying and Selling” this fall. One of the episodes aired on August 30th, with two more episodes set to air on September 13th and October 4th. They spent three months filming in Nashville and Franklin last spring. “When the Property Brothers invited us to participate in the show, it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” says Chris Veal, president of Whitestone Enterprises. “Drew and Jonathan Scott are experts in home remodeling, and nothing is more fun for us than partnering with peers who are as committed to high-quality craftsmanship as we are. It was an honor to work with them.” Whitestone Enterprises is a design-build contractor, which means they handle the entire construction process rather than leaving it to the homeowners to piece together a team. That means when clients work with them, they don’t have to worry about professionalism, reliability or craftsmanship. It’s what they are known for. Because they are experts.
At Whitestone Enterprises, we know when you allow us into your home, you allow us into your life. We consider it an honor, and we treat it as so.
Chris Veal has been featured as an expert contributing writer in Your Williamson in the past, and represents the consummate creative professional homeowners and buyers are looking for when taking on a big project like a remodel. The Whitestone team has more than forty-seven years of combined experience in luxury custom design and construction across the Nashville metropolitan area. Whether it’s a complete design-build or the renovation of a specific space, each project has its own Whitestone team of professionals, who will guide clients through crucial decisions to ensure their expectations are met – and exceeded – from start to finish. Take a look at some of their projects and them online – they would love to talk with you. You can find out more about the design-build difference at whitestoneenterprises.com.

Chef Whitney’s Top 10 Kitchen Staples
BY WHITNEY MILLER
Thank you to Castle Homes for hosting our photo shoot at their Parade of Homes house. The Parade of Homes is October 7th through October 22nd.
Are you an aspiring chef? Our Eat, Drink & Be Merry contributor and chef, Whitney Miller, explains what top ten essential items you need in your cabinets to be a successful chef. 1. Cast iron skillet. Biscuit-making is an art, passed down through generations. I had the privilege of learning how to make biscuits from my greatgrandmother who always formed her biscuits by hand and baked them in a cast iron skillet. Whether an heirloom or new pre-seasoned cast iron skillet, have fun cooking everything from casseroles to desserts in yours. To keep it seasoned properly, only wash it with hot water and never soap. 2. Chef’s and paring knife. If I could only have two knives in my kitchen, it would be these two. I use them every day. If you aren’t comfortable using a chef ’s knife, take a knife class and practice. Using the right knife makes all the difference in efficiently and easily preparing your meals.
3. Rubber spatulas. I have different sizes and colors of these. Whether mixing, folding, or scraping, a rubber spatula is essential. Your non-stick skillets will thank you. 4. Wooden utensils. My great-grandmother always used a wooden spatula to make her roux for gravies and gumbos. I too love using my wooden utensils for roux making, baking and more. 5. Small food processor or food chopper. My personal favorite is Ninja’s sixteen-ounce food chopper. What I love is that it isn’t heavy and I can process small amounts. I use mine to make pestos, purees, smoothies and sauces. 6. Casserole dish. All Southern cooks need this dish for making family favorite casseroles, cakes, and cobblers. I put a Southern spin on a Mexican “casserole,” enchiladas with turnip greens and my Southern verde sauce. For easy assembly, I layer my ingredients with the tortillas. 7. Box grater. My box grater has four sides with grating options. I can grate cheese and vegetables on the coarse grate and zest fruits and mince garlic on the fine grate. 8. Pie dish. My personal favorite pie dish is glass. I like being able to see the bottom of the crust to ensure it is done. I also like how glass allows the pie to be the star. My toasted coconut cream pie is a show stopper with its fluffy torched meringue, toasted coconut, nuts and chocolate. When I am not using my pie dishes for baking, I use them for a breading station for meats, fish and vegetables. 9. Round biscuit/cookie cutters. Unlike my great-grandmother, I prefer to cut my biscuits instead of hand forming them. I have multiple sizes for making large cathead to mini biscuits.
10. Measuring spoons. Baking is a science. If a recipe isn’t followed exactly with the correct ingredient amounts, the recipe won’t turn out. Measuring spoons are essential in adding precise teaspoons, Tablespoons, etc amounts in recipes.

Olive Oil Biscuits 1/4 cup plus 2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 cups self-rising flour, plus more for biscuit cutter 3/4 to 1 cup whole milk Softened butter Preheat the oven to 425°F. Grease a 9-inch cast-iron skillet with 2 Tablespoons olive oil. Sift the flour into a medium bowl. Make a well in the center of the flour, and pour 1/4 cup olive oil in the well. Using your hand, gently stir the olive oil into the flour until incorporated. Add the milk a little at a time while continuing to work the flour with your fingers. When a wet dough forms, begin using a downacross-up-and-over folding technique to incorporate the flour and milk until a moist and sticky dough forms. If the dough is too wet, add 1 to 2 Tablespoons more flour. Be careful not to overwork the dough. Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Gently press the dough into a 1-inch thick round. Coat a 2 1⁄2 - to 3-inch round biscuit cutter in flour, and cut out the biscuits, being sure to press straight down through the dough. Re-form the scraps of dough, and continue cutting. Place the biscuits close together in the greased skillet. Bake the biscuits for about 12 minutes, until they have fully risen. Do not overcook. If the tops are still pale, change the oven setting to broil, and cook until golden brown. Serve warm with butter. Makes about 7 biscuits.
Toasted Coconut Cream Pie with Chocolate and Pecans 1 graham cracker piecrust 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons sweetened shredded coconut, divided 1 (13 1/2-fluid ounce) can unsweetened coconut milk 1 cup whole milk 1 cup pure cane sugar, divided 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 Tablespoons cornstarch 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt 4 large eggs 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter 1 Tablespoon coconut cream, optional 2 Tablespoons chopped pecans 1/2-ounce semi-sweet chocolate bar
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
egg yolk mixture into the saucepan. Return the pan to the heat, and cook until the mixture has thickened or coats the back of a spoon, about 12 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the toasted coconut, 1/2 cup of the untoasted coconut, and butter. To intensify the coconut flavor, stir in the coconut cream. Pour the filling into the prepared crust, and let cool completely.
Bake the piecrust for 6 minutes, or until golden brown. Set aside to cool. Spread 1/2 cup of the shredded coconut on a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes, stirring halfway through the baking time. Let cool. Combine the coconut milk, milk, and 3/4 cup sugar in a saucepan. Whisk in the flour and cornstarch until smooth. Heat over medium to medium-high heat until hot, about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the salt. Separate the egg yolks from the whites into two medium bowls. Whisk the egg yolks, and temper them by whisking a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks and then whisking the
Beat the egg whites with a hand mixer on high speed until soft peaks form. Reduce the speed to low, and gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup sugar. Increase the speed to high, and beat until stiff peaks form. Spread the meringue over the top of the pie, creating peaks with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle the remaining 2 Tablespoons untoasted shredded coconut and chopped pecans on top.

Bake until the meringue is golden brown, about 6 minutes. Use a vegetable peeler to shave the length of the chocolate bar on top of the toasted meringue. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM
Williamson County has a new dining experience to offer right in the heart of Brentwood. Ludlow & Prime, a steak and seafood house, opened its doors in June 2017 in the space that was formerly Cross Corner Bar & Grill. Ludlow & Prime owner Tim Kohler snagged the opportunity with the available space to bring the area a restaurant that pulls together his passion of a second to none dining experience with an approachable menu, but without the “fine dining” tag line. Their philosophy is to cook from the land to create authentic cuisine and truly let the food speak for itself, starting with sourcing from local farmers and purveyors, they enhance the inherent flavor of ingredients with all of nature’s elements. They do this all while taking inspiration from the local community’s rich culture and providing a welcoming atmosphere for and by the community. Tim and his wife, Rachel, moved to Williamson County with their five children to settle down after living between Houston, Texas and New York City for many years. Tim’s previous corporate life kept him moving around the country reinventing fine dining establishments in casinos and hotels as well as working directly with CNBC’s “Billion Dollar Buyer,” Tilman Fertitta. Tim and Rachel both decided it was time to find a place where they could focus on their family and Brentwood felt like the right place to put roots down and to also have a new adventure. Combining their passions of a unique dining experience while surrounded by family and good company, the creation of Ludlow & Prime became a reality. I had the opportunity to visit the new restaurant and sit down with Tim and Rhett, Tim’s oldest son, and sample some of their favorite dishes offered. When you step inside the newly renovated space, you are greeted by an old Manhattan speakeasy vibe mixed with “farmhouse chic,” as Tim describes it. The entire space is a mix of metals and woods, adorned with unique pendant lighting. There are two separate dining areas, one surrounding the bar area which showcases an L-shaped bar with seating and televisions, a long sofa, copper bistro tables and farm tables. The larger dining
area is separated from the bar with booth seating. There is also a private room that can seat up to thirty-five for events, meetings and special occasions. The first dish I tried was the Smoked Seattle Salmon Slab, which is cured for eighteen hours then slow-smoked for twelve hours to perfection. It is served with a greens mix topped with champagne vinaigrette and crostinis. This dish can be an appetizer or a meal with the amount of salmon you are given. The flavor is fine-tuned to perfection, giving not just a smoked taste but also a perfect caramelization. Many order the smoked salmon to top their wedge salad or pasta. Step aside cream cheese and capers, because you are not needed here!
RHETT & TIM KOHLER The next dish I tasted was their Gulf Seafood Gumbo with jumbo shrimp and lump crab, gulf oysters, crawfish, andouille sausage, okra, rice and topped with crab claws, a crawfish hushpuppy and fried oysters. This gumbo is special as it is created with a true and traditional style burgundy roux, along with many “secrets” according to Tim. With other gumbos, many folks would line up their crackers and hot sauce, but I found that nothing was needed at all. The flavor was spot on with the perfect balance of heat from the white and black pepper already cooked in.
Up next was the Plancha-Seared Scallops with a summer succotash and corn purée. First, let me just say, this plate is served beautifully. The colors are bold and the flavors are right there to match. I have found that scallops are either a hit or a miss at most places. Ludlow & Prime offers up a home run with their collaboration of seared scallops and the sweet, crunchy mix of the succotash. This dish is filling, yet light. After that, I sampled the Bear Creek Farm Burger with Bear Creek Farm beef, Benton’s Bacon, pickled red onion, fontina, smoked tomato aioli, arugula and served with truffle fries. I am always on the hunt for a great burger and they are simply few and far between, but this is now my new favorite burger to beat. I loved that the toppings melted into the burger and there was a delicious balance of flavors. Go try it and, trust me, you won’t be saying “a burger is a burger!” Lastly, by recommendation from Rhett, I sampled the Blackened Red Fish with dirty fried Carolina rice, peppadew-almond romesco and cilantro chimichurri. This was also a beautifully plated dish. As my entire experience had already proven, this was another seafood lover hit. This dish had a sweet heat with the peppadew-almond romesco and incredible texture with the crunchy exterior to the red fish paired with the dirty rice. Overall, my dining experience with Brentwood’s new restaurant destination was delectable. It is hard to say what my favorite dish

was, as I can see myself going back to order any and all of them. The atmosphere was enticing for a special occasion or date night, yet inviting for game watching and family dinners. I highly recommend you head over to Ludlow & Prime and check it out, and then go back again and again because they have plenty of fabulous fare to offer any craving. Ludlow & Prime is now open six days a week for lunch and dinner and will be adding a “fast favorites” menu to for quick bites on one’s lunch break. They will also be adding Sunday brunch this October. Ludlow & Prime 330 Franklin Road | Suite 226 B | Brentwood, TN 37027 615.942.5907 | ludlowandprime.com

City Winery Nashville’s 2015 Reserve Pinot Noir from Hyland Vineyard in Willamette Valley, Oregon, exemplifies the elegance that has become synonymous with Willamette Valley. Aromas of strawberries and cassis mingle with the floral notes of lavender and violet, which come together harmoniously with focused tannin structure and gentle finish. Enjoy now or allow to age up to five years as it continues to evolve in bottle.

Our 2015 Reserve Pinot Noir is one of my favorite house-made wines here at City Winery. Pinot is one of the most pairable reds. It’s season-friendly and has more complexity when it comes to fruit balance, earthiness and herbaceous qualities. I love the slight hint of dry roses and I especially adore its Oregon origin. Oregon runs along the same latitude line as Burgundy, so wines from these regions are going to be similar in climate style and body. Pairing well with duck, lamb, pork, vegetables, light fishes and cheese, I would happily sip a glass of our 2015 Reserve Pinot Noir with a perfectly cooked pork tenderloin. Want to try for yourself? This specific wine is not only made in Nashville at City Winery, but it’s also available on tap, in the bottle and available to take home in one of our growlers.

The reason The Henderson sounds familiar to many, is because it is a new adjacent property to the well-loved Henderson Park Inn, with whom it now shares many amenities and guest services. And while the name may be similar - both properties stand on their own in their unique and highly sought-after way. The new hotel and resort, The Henderson, is located on one of America’s highest-rated beaches along nearly two miles of white powdery sand and emerald-green water

in Destin. The stunning property features sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico and pristine dunes, as well as a thoughtful and respectful design. Every aspect of the The Henderson has been meticulously planned including the art displayed throughout the property. One of the many interesting and special details that were definitely noticed on our recent stay here, were the thirteen local Destin artists’ work chosen to create custom pieces, specifically for The Henderson. These custom pieces also include a pictorial history of the area, so that every trip from your room, down a hall, or into a new area of the hotel, is enriched by this nostalgia. The result is a stunning coastal resort with an inspired sense of place. This detail along with so many others including truly luxurious accommodations, sublime views of the coastline and Henderson Park, the incredible dual pools and terraces,
vistas from balconies and verandas that provided sunsets and sunrises to inspire, made our stay one we would not soon forget. This area of Highway 98 in Destin is very familiar to most who have visited this resort town. And the options for where to stay are, indeed, endless. But if you are looking for a boutique hotel experience where children are welcome - as are pets - then look no further. The multi-phased resort features a spectacular grand anchor hotel which offers 170 spacious rooms and suites, with incredible views, providing the quintessential oceanside experience. Even though the hotel can accommodate quite a few, it still felt small and intimate staying there. Every employee knew us by name - from the concierge to the valet. Every employee spoke to us as soon as they saw us, with a welcome, a good morning or what can I get you. Doors were opened, gates parted, bags carried, child entertained, towels and cold water brought. It really was a unique hotel experience that, when combined with the overall property and services, is incomparable. Much of the hotel faces Henderson Beach State Park, preserve and beach. Specifically designed to connect guests to the environment, the resort is infused with several gathering areas. For those wanting a more active setting, The Henderson features a sun-lit fitness room and a variety of other water experiences, including a family-oriented pool with a lazy

There are numerous family activities, including a dedicated children’s program - Poppy’s Kids Club. Guests can easily stroll or bike to the beach, or they can utilize the resort’s fleet of luxury cars or concierge shuttle to visit nearby attractions. Guests of The Henderson also enjoy a beach experience that features sunset cocktail hours, a wide pristine beach, waterfront dining, umbrella and chair service, as well as a base for activities like sailing, snorkeling and volleyball. The Henderson features 10,000 square feet of event space, including a dedicated meeting wing, a spectacular 5,221 square foot ballroom, a junior ballroom, private boardrooms, as well as 20,000 square feet of outdoor spaces, including unrivaled oceanfront function locations. The resort is also the perfect location for a wedding celebration, a renewal of vows or a memorable anniversary. For every stay at The Henderson, they collect an optional nightly $2 donation that is given directly to the neighboring Henderson Beach State Park; being a steward of the land and protecting what makes their home. Drawing on the inspirational beach venue that incorporates the natural surroundings, The Henderson’s onsite spa features treatments and amenities, and a women’s locker room which opens onto a private relaxation terrace overlooking the preserve. Oh yes, gentlemen are welcome too! The resort offers a signature restaurant, Primrose, with a display kitchen and a dedicated experience with freshly prepared sushi. It also features a striking octagonal shaped bar, Horizons, a poolside grill called Sea Level, and an old-fashioned ice cream shop, Sprinkles. Whether you are traveling for a romantic getaway, enjoying a family vacation or maybe even on business, The Henderson was built to impress and provide you with a sense of place. A place of sanctuary, style and serenity.

Photography by Haley Anthony Friends of Franklin Parks held their sixth annual Raise the Roofs event at Harlinsdale Farm in August. Presented by Kemp Orthodontics and Randy Jones & Associates, it was one of the biggest equestrian-themed parties of the summer. The evening featured food from more than a dozen of Franklin’s local restaurants, live music from Boy Named Banjo, silent and live auctions, and a polo match. For the last three years, Harlinsdale Farm patriarch Bill Harlin, has donated horses to be auctioned at Raise the Roofs. Although Harlin passed away in June, the Harlin family honored his legacy and donated three horses and a foal to the event’s fundraising effort. All proceeds benefit Friends of Franklin Parks and the organization’s efforts to continue to improve and connect Franklin’s sixteen-park system. SOCCER GAINS MOMENTUM IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE BY HARRISON CHEATHAM
The atmosphere at a soccer game is second to none. Games last exactly two hours and are usually watched by fans that stand, chant and cheer for the entirety of the match. The game clock does not stop, there are no timeouts and there are no breaks, besides halftime. Soccer is two forty-five minute halves of continuous action. Soccer, or “football” as it is known in every other country, is the world’s biggest and most popular game. It has taken quite some time for soccer to build a solid foundation in the United States and to expand to what its current state is today. However, in the last few years soccer has become the country’s fastest growing sport; including rapid growth of professional teams, drastically improved attendance at games and an overall growth of knowledge and interest from the fans. I have been playing soccer since I was a young child. In 1991, I was a four-year-old that liked to run around with my friends and play tag, chase butterfly’s, and share snacks. I also need to mention that all of these activities occurred every Saturday morning in Franklin at the Williamson County Soccer Association. This was how I was introduced to soccer at an early age. Soccer, at this time, was more of a two-hour relief for parents to let their kids run around and get tired. Once I reached high school I had to decide on a single sport to focus on. Among all the sports I had played growing up, it was a no brainer soccer would be the one I chose. After high school, I played for several colleges, each at different levels from junior college, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division I, and several summers playing for an amateur team called the Nashville Metros, which at the time was part of the highest level of soccer in Tennessee under the PDL (Premier Development League). 90 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
Soccer was not a sport that many people in the middle Tennessee area followed. Most of the youth coaches were fathers of a player on the team and would carry around a soccer manual to try and learn the game as it was being played in front of them. This was the beginning of soccer in middle Tennessee and no one ever thought it would be anything more than some foreign sport that gave their kids good exercise. Fast forward twenty-six years later, and soccer is one of the most talked about sports among kids, teens and adults altogether. Soccer is here and thriving in the United States and Nashville is in the hunt for a piece of that pie.
“Among all the sports I had played growing up, it was a no brainer that soccer would be the one I chose.” It is no secret that soccer has been growing at an extremely fast pace for the last handful of years in this country. There are many contributing factors to this rapid growth in the states and for the growth in the middle Tennessee area as well. One major factor is the influx of people moving to the city. Nashville has become a melting pot of people moving from different states and different countries. With this huge influx comes other cultures where soccer is the main sport which has helped create an even bigger soccer audience. Another factor is the major TV deals that are being made for leagues around the world.
Companies such as NBC Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports and BEin Sports have all signed huge TV deals to make the top leagues around the world much more easily accessible here in the states. ESPN has also signed a major deal to televise more Major League Soccer (MLS) games nationwide, which will bring more viewers to our domestic league. This has brought viewers to the sport and allowed them to become more knowledgeable at the same time. This summer has taken Nashville from a mid-table contender to a frontline contender for an MLS expansion team. The ownership group is pushing for a bid to take this team to the highest level to compete in the MLS by the year 2020. There are twelve cities currently fighting for four expansion spots. However, there are several reasons why Nashville has become a very strong contender in this twelve horse race. One reason is the strong ownership group that is backing this huge push for a team. The ownership group includes, but not limited to, the majority owner John Ingram of Ingram Industries and the Wilf family who are owners of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings as well. Another reason why Nashville is becoming a favorite is because of the progress on finding a location to build a soccer specific stadium. The owners have a vision to build this team from the ground up, and to do it right the first time. Nashville currently has a team that will play in the second tier of professional soccer in the United States, The United Soccer League (USL), next year at the Sounds’ First Tennessee Park. This will allow the community to have a first-class venue to see the team play for the first year while a permanent stadium is being built at the fairgrounds. One of the most important factors involved in a new team is whether or not the city will support it. If the last few months are any indication, Nashville has nothing to worry about. This summer, Nashville saw more than 100,000 people attend soccer events. In early July, the United States National Team played in front of more than 47,000 people and over 56,000 attended the Manchester City vs. Tottenham game later in the month. These numbers were more than impressive not only for the city, but for the ownership group and the MLS as well. Soccer has fully arrived in middle Tennessee and I believe it is here to stay.

Love Your Libraries The Williamson County Library Foundation has supported the library since 1948. They help to enhance programs and services at the main library in Franklin, as well as the branches in Bethesda, College Grove, Fairview, Leiper’s Fork and Nolensville. Recently, the Foundation has focused on supporting children’s programs, including the Summer Reading initiatives. The Foundation supports the ever-evolving nature of libraries. The Williamson County libraries are changing to meet today’s expectations supporting the need for gathering spaces at the library for collaboration and study, and growing the digital resources and capabilities. The libraries consist of books. . . and much more.

Pain-Free Care
The six public libraries in Bethesda, College Grove, Fairview, Franklin, Leiper’s Fork and Nolensville, are community centerpieces, especially for children in Williamson County. For example, since the opening of the Franklin library in 2003, there have been nearly 400,000 visits by children - for programs, resources, activities as well as for checkouts. The varied resources offered in our libraries, all free of charge, are for residents from all walks of life. Today’s library patrons are looking for much more than books on shelves, and the Williamson County Public Library system strives to meet these needs. Donations to the Williamson County Library Foundation can go above and beyond the basics to ensure that a place of learning, discovery, and success will always be available to each and
every Williamson County resident, at all of the library branches. The Williamson County Library Foundation is holding its first ever fundraising event in support of the Williamson County Public Libraries on October 19th at the new Williamson County Enrichment Center - just next door to the library. They are hoping to raise $30,000 to purchase two rolling carts of sixteen laptop computers each for use in the libraries. The proceeds from this year’s event, “Technology on the Go,” will be used for laptops to provide students with additional resources to enhance their education and learning. Many of the library users come from lesser-advantaged backgrounds, and these resources are not readily available to them at their homes. These items will be purchased for the library system: -Two portable storage carts. -Thirty-two laptop computers each with Microsoft Office, Adobe programs package and access to the library’s catalog system.

The 411 of the Thank You Note While this topic may seem overly discussed, it was recently brought to the forefront of my etiquette mind, and I was in need of some insight and thought you would enjoy a refresher too. I immediately went to the source of all things etiquette for my thank you note dilemma - Emily Post. You see dear Emily, as a harried business owner and mother, the last four years since said toddler was born, evidently have rendered me somewhat deficient in what previously had been very important and sacred to me - the remembrance of gifts and kindnesses and most of all, the hand written thank you note. Of course, I say that, but the quandary I found myself in recently was not that I had not written the thank you notes. I had written, addressed and even stamped them, but not mailed… four years ago now on the occasion of the baby shower… Now to what to do. Throw them away? Four years does seem more than the reasonable expected time to send a thank you. Or send anyway, addressing the issue individually with each person, as to how sorry I am for the delay? BEING THANKFUL Sometimes it’s easy to write off a heartfelt thank-you note. Other times, writer’s block can set in - especially when you are staring down a large stack of them. Before you start, remember that thanking people needs11:14 to beAMabout LCB-092-Your_Williamson-half_page-9x5.3125-General.pdf 5 5/1/17 just that: expressing thanks.
BY SHELLY ROBERTSON BIRDSONG AND EMILYPOST.COM
WHO NEEDS A NOTE? All gifts should be acknowledged with a note, unless the present was opened in front of the giver - then you have the chance to thank them in person. An important exception: Many of an older generation expect a hand-written note. Providing them with one is an appropriate gesture of respect and consideration. Also, send a hand-written note for gifts received at a shower, even if you said thank you in person at the time. WHEN SHOULD THANK-YOU NOTES BE WRITTEN? Write your notes as soon as possible, and don’t hesitate if you feel you’re late; a late note is always better than no note at all. Thank-you notes for wedding gifts should be sent within three months of returning from your honeymoon, though an immediate turnaround is recommended, both to acknowledge the gift arrived and to stay on top of them. WHAT ABOUT EMAIL? Email is okay to thank for a coffee or meal that was casual or whose invitation was extended by email in the first place. It’s also okay for very small favors. But for dinner parties, big favors, an actual gift, or being a house-guest, handwritten thank-you notes are your best bet for an expression of warm, heartfelt thanks.

YOU WILL SPEND UPWARDS OF
45 YEARS
BY ALEX JONES
If your goal is to save enough to fund a long retirement, and you’re not sure how to start or how to catch up, remember there’s more than one path to success. Retirement rules that work for some may be a myth for others. Here’s why knowing that some retirement rules are myths could potentially benefit you in your quest for long-term retirement success. SET ASIDE TEN PERCENT OF YOUR CURRENT PAY This is a nice, simple number; too bad it only applies to the younger saver. If you’re nearing retirement age and have just started to build a nest egg, putting ten percent in savings may not be enough to create a comfortable cushion. Saving takes time; put aside whatever you can manage. 100 MINUS YOUR AGE EQUALS THE PERCENTAGE OF STOCKS TO KEEP IN YOUR PORTFOLIO. If you’re forty-years-old, for example, this rule recommends keeping sixty percent of your portfolio in stocks. The problem is, this equation is too reductive to apply to the many possible nuances in personal retirement strategies and goals. Instead, consider creating an asset allocation that matches your risk tolerance, time horizon and financial goals. And be willing to adjust it more than once a year. Investing involves risk, including loss of principal. YOU’LL NEED SEVENTY PERCENT OF PRE-RETIREMENT INCOME IN RETIREMENT While a thirty percent reduction in
spending may work for some, this number is going to fluctuate over time. To make a better estimate of post-retirement spending needs, take a look at your expenses. What will change when you retire? Some expenses will probably go up (healthcare costs), some will go down (wardrobe bills, car payments), and many will remain the same (grocery bills). A SUSTAINABLE WITHDRAWAL RATE IS FOUR PERCENT Determining how much money you can safely withdraw from your savings and investments in retirement is an important calculation. But no one can predict how much money you’ll need to sustain a comfortable retirement. Only time will tell. YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON SOCIAL SECURITY Social Security is not designed to replace pre-retirement income, so it’s best to view it as a helping hand - and not as a central source of funding. Also, we’re living longer than before, and incurring higher health care costs. You’ll be better served to plan on covering these types of expenses using 401(k) funds and other forms of savings. THE ONLY RULE THAT MATTERS: STAY FLEXIBLE There’s only one rule you can successfully follow in retirement: to stay flexible. Have a plan, stick to it and be prepared to reassess and modify as time goes by.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY Francine Edmondson, Kim Francis, Kim Pregnall & Tracy Christie
BY RANDY JONES
My wife and I have always enjoyed visiting Franklin. We love the small-town feel, the people and the community. We are so very excited to now be a part of Williamson County. I am the Principal Agent of Randy Jones & Associates, Inc., which recently became affiliated with the Keith Massey Agency located in historic downtown Franklin at 222 Fourth Avenue North. The office is a beautiful, historic home that was built in 1915 and was originally the home of a former Mayor of Franklin, Mayor Wagner. The Keith Massey Agency had worked out of the office since 1984. We love this location and its history. We are excited to have the same wonderful staff with more than fifty years’ experience. I understand the importance of service to the community. From the small town of Guntersville, Alabama, my agency has been involved in everything from the local PTA to the Arts Council to United Way. I currently am a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Board of Trustees, the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Foundation, and the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees. Here locally, the agency was a presenting sponsor of the recent Friends of Franklin Parks’ annual fundraiser, Raise the Roofs. The agency is also a sponsor of the upcoming Wine Down Main Street, benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee. We have plans to continue to become more involved in local events and nonprofit organizations. Randy Jones & Associates was established in 1978 with one office and no staff and has now grown to twelve offices across the Southeast, with a total team of sixty people. The members of the agency have one goal in mind and that goal is
“Service is our number-one passion to our customers and to our communities.” their mission statement - Provide Service. “Service is our number-one passion to our customers and to our communities. Randy Jones & Associates has over 1,500 farms insured across the southeast and their Agribusiness Team has over one-hundred years combined experience. We have policies that can be designed for farmers with coverage specific to their needs. The agency began with one mission - to provide service - and their goals go above and beyond that mission. The building had been known as “The Wallman House” for the building’s first owner, H. H. Wallman, a prominent shoemaker for the city’s elite at the time. The property features a charming red brick exterior, tall ceilings, large picture windows, a lush outdoor courtyard and a chic, private rooftop terrace with downtown and neighborhood views. “My business partner, Phil Hyde, had the original vision for the Inn. He negotiated the purchase of the historic structure in mid-2015. After getting it under contract, he worked with an architect in taking what was a personal residence and re-imagining it into a six-room boutique hotel. He approached me in late October of 2015 with the idea and house under

contract. He needed some assistance with the funding side of things and getting the historic residence to the closing table. After considering his proposal, I loved the idea and jumped right in to raise private equity and navigate the remodeling and construction financing. We closed on the residence in late December 2015 and started the remodeling and addition project in April 2016,” says Jim Creason, Principle of Trust Development, LLC. Germantown is a quaint neighborhood just blocks from downtown Nashville and the Germantown Inn is within walking distance from some of Music City’s best restaurants, high-end shopping and more. The property’s proximity to the city’s main interstates also makes it ideal for business travelers and tourists alike. “Germantown had become a major destination for visitors of Nashville, both for business and pleasure. Germantown did not have a hotel option much less a boutique hotel to select from. Since opening, we have held several neighborhood functions from the Germantown Historic Candlelight

Chic sophistication meets traditional style at the Germantown Inn. The design, led by Nashville-based interior designer McLean Barbieri, includes modern textures and updated amenities to balance the original character of the 1860s building for a contemporary and functional space. Throughout the Inn, custom pieces were commissioned from local artists to highlight the vast creative talent in the city. History guides the inspiration and design, as each of the six light-filled suites is named for a former United States president who have had some connection to Tennessee or whose name is a street name in Germantown. The suites are named after former president, Jackson, Monroe, Taft, Madison, Polk and Buchanan. Local artist and graphic designer, Caitlin Mello, created the colorful presidential portraits that hang in each suite. Holiday Tour to a pop-up Easter brunch to a graduation party to the Germantown Garden Guzzle. This is a quaint location for residents to host functions and enjoy the splendor of a remodeled historic gem,” says Jim. “Phil and I love Germantown. He found the property available and thought Germantown would be a perfect area of Nashville to have a boutique hotel given its historic charm and proximity to several restaurants. The fact that the property was one of Germantown’s oldest structures, we thought it was the perfect location with its storied history to house a boutique hotel experience for Nashville visitors,” he says. The building underwent many changes in order to bring the vision of the Inn together. “The house was in dire need of major renovations. Given it was a residence, in order to modify its layout to house six boutique rooms, required some interior wall adjustments. Also, we demolished a two-story side porch that was no longer usable and rebuilt it to serve as the primary hallway to enter each room in addition to adding a social parlor for a gathering spot for our guests. We also included a roof top terrace on the addition so our guests could enjoy Germantown from atop the parlor. We replaced all the electrical, plumbing, HVAC and windows of the historic structure as all were in really bad shape. Fortunately, we were
operations, but Jim also enjoys being a part of the operations. “From time to time, I stop over for our daily wine hour to meet and greet our guests. I really enjoy this part of involvement as we have folks from all over the world staying with us. This gives me an opportunity to learn how they heard about us and also thank them for their stay. It is amazing to interact with our guests and we learn a lot about how to make our services the best boutique experience possible,” he says. Jim and Phil both have ideas to continue to grow the vision of bringing historical inspired inns to other areas in the South. “Phil and I are looking at the potential of other historic areas of other southern cities to replicate the Germantown Inn. However, we want to fully appreciate the experience of perfecting the Germantown Inn first before moving into other markets. The boutique hotel industry is very unique and each market has its own individual opportunities and challenges,” Jim says. Accordingly, this room, which is upstairs to the back of the Inn away from the hustle and bustle of the day, may be the quaintest but features a king bed, original hardwood floors and carries the Inn’s charm throughout.

HELPING YOUR CHILDREN TRANSITION DURING A MOVE
BY GINGER JONES
Moving from one home to another can be a big, scary challenge for a child. Whether you are moving in the same town that they’ve always lived in or taking them across the country, there will be a lot of changes that your little ones have to prepare for. Here are a few things you can do before, during and after your move to help them ease into it. Inform them early on what’s happening. Tell them as early as possible that they’re leaving their home for a brand new one. Don’t hold back any details about where you’re going. Explain to them why you’re moving, and make sure they know how excited you are for this big change. Is it a new town far away that you’re traveling to? Pull up as many pictures and videos of where you’ll be living. You can look at them on a phone, computer or tablet, or you can even make a little book for them to flip through and see their new hometown. If the house isn’t too far, take them to see it before you move in, so they’re familiar with their surroundings. The more preparation you can do before the big day, the better. INVOLVE YOUR KIDS IN THE MOVE.

You want them to feel like they are helping and part of the decisionmaking process. Show them pictures of potential houses and ask for their opinions, and write their opinions down so they know you’re taking them seriously. When it comes to the actual move, ask them how they’d like their stuff to be packed, and discuss with them how they want their new room to look. The more say they have in the matter, the easier the transition will be for them.
ro
MAKE MOVING DAY A PARTY!
l
If you’re moving somewhere close, ask friends and family to help. That way they’re surrounded by people they’re familiar with, and people who care about them. At the end of the day when all the hard work is done, order pizzas for everyone - there’s not a child out there who doesn’t love a good pizza party.
GIVE THEM THEIR SPACE. Once you’ve gotten into your new home, it’s a good idea to involve your children in the decorating of their room as much as you feel comfortable. From deciding where they want their night stand to picking out the paint colors - give them ownership of their new space so they can make it theirs. ONCE THEY’RE SETTLED, ESTABLISH A ROUTINE. Breakfast before school, reading time as soon as they get home, playtime in the backyard, etc - a routine helps a child feel at home and gives them the structure they need to adjust to this new environment. EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT AND SO IS EVERY MOVE! As the parent, you know how much help your kids are going to need during this big transition. The most important thing is to listen to them and make sure they know that you love them and care how they feel. Your move is going to be great!

What Happened to Recess? BY ANNIE OSTEEN
School has started and each summer I always say that what little break the students and teachers have to enjoy, goes by faster and faster. The summers are inevitably the time to relax and recharge for the children AND their parents. Then the fall season kicks off a new school year which brings back early mornings and sometimes late nights, along with full calendars. It’s the time to bid farewell to the brief resuscitation that we receive after nine long months of academic and scheduling overload. However, do the children returning to school, particularly in elementary and middle schools, still have what they need to recharge throughout their day like they did in the summer? These days most public and private schools begin their day anywhere from 7am to 8:30am, ending seven to eight hours later. With each passing year, the academic standards which need to be met by state and federal guidelines, seem to get more stringent and with less opportunity for free time, whether that’s during the lunch hour or during recess.
Some will argue physical education classes can be used as the outlet for children to get their physical activity. While this is in part true, PE classes are more structured and are controlled environments. Especially in urban areas, recess may be the only opportunity that a child has to develop social skills with children his or her own age. But for all children, recess is another chance to be active and release the academic pressures that are now beginning in kindergarten. It goes without saying that recess also creates a positive crusade against the “our children are becoming unhealthy and obese,” era that this country seems to be moving towards. Research from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that fewer than half of children ages six through eleven met the minimum recommendation of sixty minutes of moderate exercise per day. The study also found that children can accumulate up to forty percent of that exercise during recess.
Some of our fondest memories were made on the playground growing up. Hosting a Painting Party BY KRISTA EHRET
If you haven’t had the opportunity to go to a wine and painting storefront, I highly recommend it. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet up with the girls or have a unique date night and get in touch with your creative side...which is always more accessible with wine. The only downside to these artsy escapades is that by the time you coordinate what works for everyone, the subject matter of the actual painting may not quite vibe with your home décor. This leaves you the morning after with the burning question: “Do I hang this masterpiece in the laundry room or the garage?” I may or may not have two such originals lovingly placed in the attic. My solution is to select your own inspiration and host a painting party at home. Here are some tips to get you started. Grab the Gear. You will definitely have to do some shopping for this soirée. Get a firm guest count and purchase a canvas, tabletop easel, brushes and paint for each person. For added flair, get each guest their own smock (preferably with a cheeky phrase or a monogram). Select the Subject. Being the hostess, you get the benefit of choosing a design that vibes with your home. I suggest going with something fairly simple since you won’t have an instructor to walk you through each step. With fall just around the corner, maybe find a cute seasonal option guests can personalize with their last name. Even the biggest art-fails can stand to be displayed once a year. Prep the Studio. You’ll want a table that everyone can sit at comfortably. Cover the table with wrapping paper or craft paper to protect it. Place the paint supplies, small disposable plate for mixing colors, a cup of water for rinsing and a print out of the inspiration piece at each station. Bring Out the Vino. If you plan to feed your guests, have them arrive about thirty minutes prior to the paint start time. Eating even finger 106 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
foods will be tricky while channeling your inner Monet. Plus, you need that hand to hold your wine glass. Keep the bar menu simple with some sparkling water and a couple of offerings of red and white wine. Need More Instruction? If you want to make things even easier, check out the website Social Artworking. It’s a company that specializes in at-home painting parties. Each of their prints comes with detailed painting instructions. You can also purchase all needed supplies or even hire a local consultant who will come to your home and lead the class. Think Outside the Box. For an added touch, purchase some cute ribbon and a staple gun so that guests can create a hanging canvas if they’d like. If you’re not interested in an art piece, get creative with your medium. You could paint pillowcases, wine glasses or even ceramics. The point is to make this functional, so consider something that could be given as a gift, even if it is a dirty Santa offering. Lastly, make sure you have some scrap paper or trash bags handy that guests can lay in their car to get their piece de resistance back home. This type of party actually makes for a great family night as well! Select a fun kid-friendly design or a collage set that can be displayed as a gallery. Cheers!

The main focuses are on mentorship, education and the championing of projects created by women. membership. Creatives Day in Nashville, which celebrates the art of all, is a commitment I relish,” she says. Nancy is excited about the Franklin International Independent Film Festival arriving to Williamson County. The mission of the festival is to promote and celebrate independent film that incorporates universal themes such as relationships, the family, environment, diversity and cultural challenges in today’s society. With an emphasis on the short film genre, FIIFF encourages submissions from around the globe. Nancy’s enthusiasm for bringing an event that celebrates film and filmmakers to the area is elevated by her knowledge of how a film festival can positively impact the community. “I have been involved for a number of years with film festivals from the exciting Nashville Film Festival (third oldest film festival in the United States), to Sundance, Los Angeles, Tribeca and Cannes. As a filmmaker and president of two arts organizations, it is exciting to believe that a world class film festival can be sustained in our community. Film festivals truly bring the world to our door. More than that, and of great significance, is the economic impact of film festivals. It is undeniable,” Nancy says, “As a filmmaker, my work is to tell visual stories. I have found an abundance from the rich history and the sorrow of the battlefields to the celebrities who find a sense of anonymity and from the county fair to the social engagements of the highest order - the stories are here,” she says. Debbie has brought places and people of Williamson County into a whole new light. Her pictures are of places you may have driven by hundreds of times, but never really taken a step back to admire. “I’m inspired by the beauty of this area, historic homes, buildings, history, farmland and some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever captured,” she says. “I love to shoot anything in nature, but I also love abandoned or unloved buildings… Sometimes I don’t really have a plan for the day, I just decide to go on a picnic or a ride. I like someone else to drive in case I have to jump out for that quick shot.” In addition to taking photographs, she also collects them and is an archivist and family historian. “I have always been drawn to Williamson County, not only for its beauty, but my ancestors were Pioneer Families of this area over six generations, or two-hundred years ago. I am very proud of their sacrifices and contributions. I feel at home when I am here,” she says. “I think that photographing families together is so special and important. I believe that onehundred years from now someone will look at the photos of their ancestors and will be grateful to have their images.” Debbie feels she is best known for her images of downtown Franklin, which includes one of her most loved photographs captured. “My favorite image ever is called ‘Snow on Main.’ It happened on the second day of Dickens of a Christmas festival in downtown Franklin several years ago. It started snowing and all of the vendors packed up and left. I was in a restaurant and was itching to go out and shoot in the snow. As soon as I walked out the door, this couple was walking down the middle of the street. It was so romantic, and I knew it was the perfect shot that just seemed to be waiting for me,” she says. “I am also grateful to know that my art is owned by people all over the world,” she says. O’More College of Design, located in the heart of downtown Franklin, is continually making strides as a university and proving to be a leader in the design and fashion world. Recently, O’More College of Design made the list for the Top Ten Fashion Design Schools and Colleges in the South, taking the ninth spot in the ranking. They are the only Tennessee college included in these national rankings by fashion-schools.org. “It means a lot to be in the top ten list, especially since all the other universities are much larger,” says Jamie Atlas, Design Chair of the O’More Fashion Programs. “We are one of the only two private design colleges, us and SCAD.” Fashion-schools.org considers academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program and faculty, value as it relates to tuition and geographic location. When setting themselves apart against other design schools, Jamie explains, “We are the one of the only schools that offer business classes along with the fashion curriculum. Not only do you need to learn about the fashion, but students need to learn and know about having a successful business.” Since O’More College has a smaller student body, this helps them to get to know their students on a more personal level, know their strengths and what they like. “Our goal is to set up our students for success, for graduation and beyond,” says Jamie. “We want to help and work with our students to get internships and gain experiences outside the classroom.”

THEATER The Nashville Shakespeare Festival (NSF) is returning to Williamson County for its second annual Shakespeare in the Park performance. From September 28th through October 1st, theater and Shakespeare lovers will have the opportunity to see The Winter’s Tale and Antony & Cleopatra at Academy Park in Franklin. “We received a warm and wonderful welcome last year from Williamson County Parks and Recreation and are thrilled to bring both shows to Academy Park this year,” says Denice Hicks, Executive Artistic Director of the Nashville Shakespeare Festival. “The Franklin community appreciates professional theater and enjoys the great outdoors, so Shakespeare in the Park is a perfect choice for a beautiful September evening.” The NSF was founded in 1988 and was developed to educate and entertain throughout the mid-South community through celebrating Shakespeare and his great, artistic works. Each year, the group brings different Shakespeare performances during the winter and summer months with, “Shakespeare in the Park,” “Winter Shakespeare,” “Shakespeare Allowed” and “Bard’s Birthday Bash.” Since their founding, more than 280,000 people have attended, with admission remaining free, with donations always welcome. Aside from giving back to the community by showcasing the great theater and history of Shakespeare, NSF in 1992 helped develop an educational outreach program, beginning with a series of fifty-minute versions of Shakespeare’s best works, known as “Shakespeare Samplers,” to help with the need for an arts-in-education outreach program in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. The NSF has never produced Antony & Cleopatra, and audience members have been awaiting this well-known tale. “We started this season with Romeo & Juliet in January, a story about young people falling in love 112 YOURWILLIAMSON.COM |SEPTEMBER 2017
NASHVILLE SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL amidst a feud,” says Denice. “We’re following that with these two shows about middle-aged relationships centered around fascinating and complex characters. One of the plays starts as a romance and ends in tragedy, the other starts as a tragedy and ends as a romantic comedy. In whichever order you choose to see the shows, you’ll be guaranteed an evening of world class acting, masterful poetry and beautiful imagery.” “These stories are rich with language and complex characters. We wanted two epic stories that are not easily associated with just one genre. These shows together cover a wide gamut, if not the entire gamut of what Shakespeare does. This is the ultimate experience. You have history, tragedy, magic, young love, heartbreak, romance, music, dance, war, snakes and bears taking place in four different worlds. It’s not just Verona and Milan or Denmark, it’s Rome, Egypt, Bohemia and Sicilia. The vast array of things you will see and experience with these two shows is quite impressive,” says Santiago Sosa, director of The Winter’s Tale. David Ian Lee, the director of Antony & Cleopatra exclaims, “This is a play I’ve wanted to direct for over a decade, and it’s not a text that is presented as frequently as some other works in the cannon. It’s a play that means more to me as I grow older – as I see the choices that I couldn’t have made as a young man, and the challenges I face with both the aide and detriment of my own experience.” Be on the lookout for their winter performance… Hamlet! Admission to Shakespeare in the Park is open to the public with a $10 suggested donation per person. LITERATURE MICHAEL J. TUCKER
Michael is the author of three critically acclaimed novels, Aquarius Falling, Capricorn’s Collapse and Summer Haze. His numerous short stories are available on Amazon. In addition to his poetry collection, Your Voice Spoke to My Ear, his work also appears in the Civil War Anthology, Filtered Through Time, and By Blood or By Marriage, a Harpeth River Writers Anthology. His latest work is Summer Haze. This is the story of three gifted musicians who rise up out of tragic childhoods that included verbal, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by their fathers. Digger, Chip and Aria put their pasts behind them, blend their talents together, and achieve stardom on the stage in the songs they write and perform. Each finds comfort in music and devotes focus to their instrument - Digger, the keyboard; Chip, the guitar; and Aria, her voice. Best friends Digger and Chip find a drummer, start a band, and then hit the road. They play in dive bars throughout the South and casinos along the Gulf Coast. The trio catches the eye of an agent, Eli Bowditch, who lures them to Nashville - Music City USA! Eli adds the beautiful blonde singer, Aria, to the boys’ band, changes its name to Summer Haze, and sends them on tour. Performance by performance, success comes, but resentment, jealousy and suspicion threaten to fracture the band. The novel Summer Haze is a coming of age of three youths - their bond of creative talent and skills mixed with friendship, their struggle for success and against infighting and their handling of fame followed by loss. Michael resides in Williamson County with his wife Lynn. For more information on Michael Tucker and his work, visit michaeltuckerauthor.com.

Michael grew up in the cold northern climate of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As an only child he was often trapped indoors and left to his own devices, where he would create space ships out of cardboard boxes, convert his mother’s ironing board into a horse and put on his Sunday suit and tie and his father’s fedora and become a newspaper reporter or police detective. This experience left him with an unlimited imagination and the ability to write electrifying short stories and novels.

While some claim that Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting is a self-portrait of the artist himself in drag, research has concluded it is likely a portrait of a woman named Lisa Gherardini, a member of a prominent Florentine family and wife of a wealthy silk merchant. Leonardo’s father allegedly knew Gherardini’s father very well, and the painting was possibly commissioned by him.
