CELEBRATE!
SPRING IS NATURE’S WAY OF SAYING ‘LET’S PARTY!’ - ROBIN WILLIAMS Dear Readers, I remember an April not so long ago, ten years to be exact, when, with the spring, came a huge change in my life. I started this company – Robertson Media Group – and embarked on what has been a truly incredible journey; an unplanned career path. Business owner was not in my long-term goal plan. Or at least, it had never crossed my mind. But now, here we are, a decade later, and we are STILL in business! And after the year that was COVID, that is saying a lot! Ten years ago, I had been running another social/community publication for several years; had several family members on my staff and felt a lot of pride and satisfaction personally and professionally, that I had been able to translate my local, event and fundraising background and experience in Williamson County, into running a publication about Williamson County. You never know what life is going to bring, but all things happen pretty much as they should. A slight bump in the road turned into an enormous opportunity which was made even sweeter, by the outpouring of friends, clients, associates and other community people who not only encouraged me to take on this new endeavor – but insisted, that I do so.
Never looked back…true enough…but there have been times, I have closed my eyes and begged for a reprieve! Then I read through our magazines, and remember every single thought, hope, word, detail, that went into a story, a profile, an event spread, an ad…in ten years, that’s A LOT of stories to recall. But telling stories is what we do. I couldn’t have done anything at all without wonderful staff over the years. My steadfast right arm, sister Anna Robertson Ham, has been through it right alongside me. Then my husband Johnny Birdsong, decided to join the fray! There are more photographers, writers, contributors, salespeople and designers than I can name right this second – but they will be named and recognized for sure in coming weeks, as we continue to celebrate our anniversary. So many people, who worked for us yes, but ultimately gave of their time for a purpose they really cared about – producing a quality publication for and about the community and people they loved. To simply say thank you to all of them doesn’t really do their contribution to my success, justice. Now, here we are, about to embark on the next ten years and I am excited! Spring is here, and rebirth and rebounding are in the air. I am ready for this next chapter, and I am putting our small, but mighty team back
CALHOUN & KEELING BIRDSONG
together after the forced separation in so many ways, of the pandemic. In coming months, we hope to look even more like we used to; attending and covering real, actual, live, in-person events and being part of that “normal” we all are so desperately craving. We start our “rebirth” with a new face to the team – Christian Headden joins our staff this month as our Director of Creative Services and Marketing. And there will be more new faces to come. I can’t wait to see what you are doing, the events you are planning, the charities you are benefiting and the many, many ways you are making this a truly Distinctively Southern Place called Williamson County! Having Fun In The Sun... Safely! WITH TISHA O’DOWD, SKINTHEORYRX
As summer quickly approaches, we need to start thinking about increasing our sun protection. Having grown up near the ocean and working as an aesthetician on the west coast, I have seen my fair share of sun damage and skin cancer. I have had countless clients in their mid-thirties who have told me that they haven’t been in the sun in years and are now getting brown spots and wrinkles on their face. The skin is very forgiving, but it doesn’t forget. Damage from years of sun in your teens and twenties can lead to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and even skin cancer in your thirties and beyond. I know it’s not realistic to stay completely out of the sun, but there are ways to prevent aging and damage. I have educated my clients for years on how to protect themselves from UV rays and still have fun in the sun safely. Here’s a list of Q&A’s that I have been asked over the years: Do I have to wear sunscreen when it’s cloudy? Yes! UVA and UVB rays are just as strong on a cloudy day! Not only can you still get a sunburn, but you might also get a worse sunburn. 80% of the sun’s rays can pass through light cloud cover. Is it better to use a high SPF? Not really. Most dermatologists recommend an SPF of 30 daily and 50 when you are going to be outside for long periods of time. I don’t recommend an SPF higher than a 50. I think it gives people a false sense of security and they don’t need to reapply as often. How much sunscreen should I use for my face and body? It might sound like a lot, but you need to use a shot glass of sunscreen for the body. Apply it twenty minutes before you go out, so it has time to set in. Reapply every two hours! What’s the difference between a chemical sunscreen and a physical sunscreen? A chemical sunscreen absorbs into the skin and then absorbs UV rays, converts the rays into heat and releases them from the body. A physical block sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun’s rays. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the main active ingredients in physical 18 SPRING 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
blocks. I like both types of sunscreen, but if I had to choose one, it would be a physical block for the beach. Is my tinted SPF enough for outdoor activities? I would highly recommend wearing an SPF of 30 or more under your tinted sunscreen just to be safe! Is there a better time of the day to go outside? Try and avoid the sun between 10am-2pm. This is when the sun is most intense and produces the greatest chance of a sunburn. If you must be outside during this time, find shade and wear protective clothing! Is there anything else I can put on my skin to help prevent damage? Vitamin C serums serve as a second line of defense under your sunscreen. Apply your serum to clean skin and follow with a moisturizer and SPF. Not all serums are made equal. You want a serum that will penetrate to the dermal layers of the skin and will sit in your collagen and elastin and protect that layer from any free radical damage and aging. LOVE my Vitamin C! Are tanning beds safe? NO NO and NO. I don’t know how they are still legal. Just ONE indoor tanning session can increase the risk of developing skin cancer!! DID YOU KNOW?... Only five sunburns double your risk of melanoma! My Sun Damage Prevention Tips! Get in the habit of wearing an SPF 15 throughout the year! Ergonomic Stretches to Keep You Pain Free While Working From Home
WITH WILLIAMSON MEDICAL CENTER
Increasingly, more people are working from home to stay productive while practicing social distancing. However, some common practices that result from turning your home into an office could be causing pain, especially in the neck, back, hips, legs and hands. Thankfully, these conditions are preventable and treatable, and we’re here to share some tips and ergonomic stretches to make sure you’re feeling your best as you’re working from home. Make Sure Your Workspace Supports Your Neck and Back Many people working from home don’t have a dedicated office space, and it’s tempting to work from the couch or bed. While this may seem more comfortable than sitting at a chair and table, it can be harmful for your neck and back. A good rule to follow is making sure the top of your screen is at eye level when sitting erect, and you are sitting in a chair that gives you some lumbar support. If your chair has no lumbar support, use a small pillow in the natural curve of your lower back to accomplish this. Try to adjust your chair and workstation to allow for the “rule of 90s” (90 degree bend at knee, hip and elbows) to decrease joint and muscle strain. Sitting straight will help prevent neck, shoulder and lower-back strain that can occur from slouching. Incorporate Ergonomic Stretches Into Your Routine Neck and Back If you are feeling neck pain, try tilting your head from side to side, followed with nodding and gently shaking your head a few times. To ease back pain, try rolling your shoulders forward and backward, or extending your arms to your sides and squeezing your shoulder blades together for a few seconds. Stretch your lower back by standing and reaching both arms toward the ceiling, and tilt to the right and left to stretch your sides. 20 SPRING 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
Hips Staying seated for too long can tighten your hips, causing uncomfortable tension. For relief, stand and cross one leg over the other and reach down to touch your bottom knee. Repeat this stretch on the other side. Feet and Calves If your legs and feet are feeling numb or stiff, a calf stretch can help. Stand tall and place one foot a large step behind the other. Slowly bend your front knee while pushing your back heel into the ground and keeping your back knee straight. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat on the other side. To relieve ankle soreness, lift your leg while in a seated position and rotate the foot a few times. Hand and Wrist Working from home is a great opportunity to work on writing projects but typing on a keyboard or writing on a notepad for long periods of time could cause hand and wrist pain or even produce carpal tunnel syndrome. For some soothing ergonomic stretches, try extending your arms in front of you and gently tilting your wrist to the left and right. Another good stretch is extending one arm and using your other hand to gently flex and extend your fingers. Stay Active if Possible Sitting in one position for an extended period of time could cause pain in your legs and especially your hips. We recommend getting up to move around every hour and developing a workout routine, even if it’s as simple as going for a 15-minute walk. Get Help if You’re Experiencing Persistent Pain If you’ve tried the stretching exercises and tips above and are still experiencing pain, call The Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee at 615.791.2630 or schedule an appointment online with a physician at boneandjointtn.org.

THE ARLINGTON BRINGS NEW LEVEL OF LUXURY TO ‘LIFE & PLACE’ IN DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN Latest Project from Visionary Developer Bernie Butler is Another Landmark Addition Over the last fifteen years, Bernie Butler, President of D9 Development, has made his mark on downtown Franklin by taking eyesore properties and turning them into landmarks; places to be lived in now but appreciated for generations to come. When Butler had a vision for the Brownstones in the early 2000s, he was staring at a brown field on the sleepy eastern edge of Franklin’s historic core. It was a big idea — one that most in town thought was crazy. They were puzzled even more when he altered his plan to construct just twenty six units, instead of the thirty nine the city approved. Yet the finished project helped drive one of the most successful real estate markets in the nation — a trend which continues today. Over the years, Butler took blighted properties and turned them into gems, including commercial projects such as 131 Third Avenue North and most recently, the 231 Public Square building, that dramatically transformed the scenic backdrop of some of Franklin’s most celebrated places. Now he’s tackling another monumental residential project in The Arlington on West Main. A mere two blocks from the historic Square of Franklin, six of the ten luxury condo units have already sold, purchased at a market-moving price per square foot before the structure is even dried in. “The concept of ‘Life & Place’ is why I exist, and why I do what I do. Life matters — how you live your life, and where you live it,” Butler says. “We are so incredibly fortunate to have a place in Franklin that allows us to do these things in the right way, and all of us prosper relationally as a result.” The Arlington on West Main, which replaced a “historically non-contributing use” apartment complex, is about living where you want, how you want, and when you want in downtown Franklin. One-level units ranging from 2,500 to more than 4,400 square

feet are constructed of concrete and steel, yet every residence is finished on the inside exactly as each owner chooses. The Arlington’s exterior will be finished in brick and limestone to blend seamlessly into the National Register of Historic Places-listed, Hincheyville neighborhood. Conditioned underground parking and storage, extensive landscaping, smart technology and concierge lock-andleave management bring a new level of luxury living to what is often referred to as “America’s Favorite Main Street.” Buyers from Williamson County and from all over the country could live anywhere they want, but are choosing to make The Arlington their primary residence. Still, Butler recognizes it’s a select audience who can contribute to what The Arlington seeks to create, and his primary focus is creating a community of people who bring something to the table for Franklin. “The stories of the people who are moving into The Arlington are just incredible — the kinds of people who have done great things here and in other places. People who are fun to be around, and we’d all love to have as our neighbors,” he says. “Just because people have the money to buy something doesn’t mean that I always feel
it’s the right fit, but we’ve been so fortunate to attract owners who will be involved, support non-profits, who want to be in downtown Franklin…but they’re not interested in maintaining an old house.” Butler believes buyers have been attracted to three key elements at The Arlington: They don’t have to give up any of the conveniences, luxuries or size and scale of the rooms they live in day to day; it’s located exactly where they want to be; and they can leave anytime they want without having to worry. “If you can deliver those three things, the environment of downtown Franklin, and amazing architecture with completely custom finishes, then it’s a great fit,” he says. “I’ve been entrusted to develop and deliver the right place for these very special people. When I think about what matters most to me in life, professionally and personally, those are the things I know I can contribute to these new friends.” Located at 725 West Main Street, just two blocks from Five Points, The Arlington promises a next-level lifestyle. THE KENTUCKY DERBY
&
The Hat The spectacular female fashion often seen at the Kentucky Derby is not solely a product of modern times; rather, opulent feminized dress has played a large role in the history of the Kentucky Derby. What Derby founders envisioned was a racing environment that would feel luxurious, reminding people of European horse racing. For a well-todo late nineteenth and early twentieth century woman, a day at Churchill Downs, especially on Derby Day, was an opportunity to be seen in the latest of fashions. A journalist from a 1901 Courier Journal stated, “The seats in the grandstand were filled with gaily dressed women and men. The mass of green, pink, red, yellow, blue, all the colors of the rainbow, blending into one harmonious whole was as beautiful a sight as His Eminence in the lead.” Nothing is more prominent amidst the parade of fashion beauty than the millinery. The hat has become synonymous with the race’s place in history In stands along the racetrack, you see ladies flaunting elegant attire with flamboyant hats perched on their heads like crowns. Men accompany their classy ladies, decked out in sharp suits and ties, embodying a look that’s classic, cool and edgy or bold and flashy. This is the Derby look. The history of Derby fashion stems from the era of famous long-established races such as the Royal Ascot (1711) and the Epsom Derby (1779) in England. The popular term “derby” was even coined from the Epsom Derby—originally named The Derby after one of its founders, Lord Derby. When these races were established in the 18th Century, the racetrack was a place of not only
30 SPRING 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
sport but also class. Originating as a social engagement among the upper class, the racetrack was characterized as a venue where you dressed formally and stylishly, displaying your station in society. Wearing hats was not only the trend in the early years of these races but a form of etiquette that distinguished classes. As the racetrack quickly attracted people from beyond the upper class, many people wore hats and formal wear to uphold the level of class and showcase their own style.
As times and fashions have changed, tradition has remained the same —most notably with hats and fascinators. If you’ve dreamed of the chance to dress in the formal style of another era and still look fashionable, this is your opportunity. The Derby isn’t just any race—it’s an experience that never goes out of style. Every year the hats get more outlandish, more colorful and more expensive. Sounds like an American tradition, if ever there was one! Do not miss the “Greatest two minutes in sports,” The 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby, May 7th. For more information go to kentuckyderby.com. Whether you make the pilgrimage to Churchill Downs or watch at your favorite Derby soirée, make sure your hat is fabulous!

Spring Yard FOUR EASY STEPS FOR SPRING TREE CARE
With weather this nice, there are plenty of reasons to get outside. This month, why not add ‘healthier trees’ and ‘a better-looking yard’ to that list? In just one day, you can make a difference in your yard that lasts all year. “Spring yard projects aren’t just about getting outside when it’s nice out,” says Scott Johnson, certified arborist and district manager with The Davey Tree Expert Company in Nashville. “After months of winter storms, spring is actually an important time to check your trees for any damage they may have suffered.” Johnson adds, “Homeowners may be surprised that the same simple steps that make your yard look better actually make it safer too.” 1. TEND YOUR TREES Want healthy trees? Now’s the time to clean up unsafe, broken or hanging branches that were damaged in winter. But don’t reach beyond your limits! Any pruning that can’t be managed with your feet on the ground should be handled by a certified arborist. Your trees are preparing to enter their peak growing season, so now is the perfect time to apply a slow-release fertilizer. This replaces nutrients and improves resistance to disease, insects and stressful weather. 2. BRACE YOURSELF Spring can bring unpredictable weather to Tennessee. Before the storms arrive, cable, brace or remove weak tree limbs; if your tree looks unstable or at risk of falling down, it’s time to call a certified arborist. The goal is to identify and fix a potentially damaging tree before the storm. Doing so could save you thousands of dollars, or even your home. 3. ADD SOMETHING NEW You already know that adding new mulch gives your yard a crisp look. But did you know it’s also a great way to improve the health of your trees?
Adding mulch secures the organic matter trees need beneath the soil surface. But don’t “volcano mulch!” Pull mulch 2-3 inches away from the trunk. This allows the base of the tree to be exposed and lets moisture escape, minimizing the risk of decay. Spring is also a great time to refresh your landscape with new trees and shrubs. Not sure where to start? Ask a certified arborist or your local garden center for practical advice on what would work best for your space! 4. DO A VISUAL CHECK-UP Is your tree looking unusually sparse this spring? Something might be wrong. Often when a tree is stressed (due to a number of reasons, from insects and diseases to drought or root issues), branches die from the top down. Next, check the trunk and limbs for wounds, holes and cankers, peeling bark, insects, and diseases. Finally, inspect the roots for stunted growth, discolored, loose, or soft wood and mushroom-like fungi growing near the base of the tree. Weakened wood at the roots can lead to tree health and safety issues down the road. If your visual check-up raises any questions or concerns, contact a certified arborist like The Davey Tree Expert Company in Nashville. Certified arborists have the skills and tools to identify tree problems, offer solutions, and partner with you to keep your trees healthy and beautiful for years to come.
The Davey Tree Expert Company provides research-driven tree services, grounds maintenance and environmental consulting for residential, utility, commercial and environmental partners in the U.S. and Canada.

Five Simple Swaps to Make Your Spring Cleaning “Cleaner” BY KRISTA EHRET THE “PEONY PINCHER”
It’s that time of year. It must be genetically wired into us. We find ourselves ready for the new season and looking around to freshen up our environment. Cleaning can be cathartic, so try embracing a good scrub down of the house versus dreading it. Take the purge to a new level and make your home a few steps healthier by eliminating these items:
3. Toxic Cleaners Cleanliness has become more important over the last year than ever. This is why it is vital to educate yourself and become more aware of what you’re spraying all over your surfaces and floors. I clean most of my bathroom with baking soda and vinegar. For everything else, I use doTERRA’s OnGuard Cleaner Concentrate in a spray bottle.
1. Plug-In Air Fresheners I could make my entire apartment smell “great” simply by plugging in the adorably decorated seasonal wall oil warmer! Fast forward about fifteen years and I diffuse doTERRA’s essential oils. It’s important to mention the brand here because not all oils are the same. There are tons of options of blends that smell amazing and offer the added benefits that come with breathing in 100% pure plant fragrance versus toxic pretend scents.
4. Candles Y’all, I saved this one for last because out of all the things I have removed from our home, this one is the hardest. Especially since having kids, I knew I needed to wean myself. What I have done is invested in some nice flameless versions that flicker and are visually appealing. For the scent, my oil diffuser saves the day once again! On occasion, I do still give into my old habits, but I’m smarter. Find a local candle maker (or one on Etsy) who uses essential oils for the scent instead of chemicals.
2. Aerosol Room Sprays We’ve all seen the commercial of the disgusted mom heavily spraying down the kid’s stinky room. Over 90% of the chemicals manufacturers use to create synthetic fragrances actually come from petrochemicals that are known to cause a whole slew of issues to our systems. DIY your own spray with essential oils, distilled water, and witch hazel.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES CAN’T MISS DESIGN TRICKS TO TRANSFORM ANY ROOM By Eric Ross There are so many decisions to be made when decorating a home. What color should the rooms be? What shade of white should we paint the trim? Should we use shutters instead of draperies? Anyone who knows me knows I always prefer draperies. With all these questions, homeowners can get what I refer to as decision fatigue. This is when you are so overwhelmed by all the questions that arise during a decorating project that you just revert to the tried and true answers. But, nothing untried is necessarily true. This 34 SPRING 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
is where I think many of my clients reach their limits and reach out to me for help. Or when they do make a decision on their own, they call me to “tweak” their selections. The clients will have made “safe” decisions. They’ll have white ceilings, beige upholstery and solid rugs. All of these “safe” decisions I really see as missed opportunities. So, I have come up with a list of six can’t miss design tricks that will transform your room from safe to savoir faire.
MISSED OPPORTUNITY #1: WHITE CEILINGS I have heard it referred to as the fifth wall. So, don’t just slap on a coat of “designer white.” This is what painters recommend to most of their clients cause it’s easy, of course, and it sounds like a designer chose it! Let me assure you, most good designers obsess over the color of every surface in a home. Great designers see the ceiling as opportunity to create another moment in the room. An opportunity to create a grand gesture to grab your attention or a quiet accent to complement other finishes in the room. One option is to paint the ceiling a color. This is a very inexpensive choice as you will be painting the ceiling anyway. When I suggest painting the ceiling a color other than white, clients are immediately scared. But it really helps highlight the crown molding. Creating contrast with a color on the wall and the ceiling really makes the trim pop. Or consider using wallcovering on the ceiling. This is more of an investment, of course, but it can really add a sense of drama. I typically use a geometric pattern of some sort, which creates a grid pattern that gives a sense of geometry, which is many times a counterpoint to floral motifs I would use on window treatments or rugs. MISSED OPPORTUNITY #2: COVERING A CHAIR WITH A SINGLE FABRIC This may seem obvious, but you have to cover a chair with some material, either fabric or leather. Or both! So, instead of just using one fabric to cover a chair, consider two or three. Now, this does create anxiety for many of my clients, but that doesn’t stop me. Often I will select a solid fabric for the overall cover and then select a contrasting fabric for the back of the chair. This really works to great effect in a dining room by placing a second fabric on a dining chair it breaks up the monotony of 8-10 chairs all in a row. When you enter the dining room, you will see the backs of one row of chairs and the fronts of the chairs on the opposite side of the table. MISSED OPPORTUNITY #3: PLAIN WHITE DOORS When selecting trim colors for interiors, I always like to change up either one room of paint with dark painted trim, OR I like to paint the interior doors a shade or two darker than the baseboards and casings. This gives more visual interest to the architecture. This is especially effective in small areas where you have limited surfaces for decoration. If you have a small hallway with nothing to look at but doors, not only can you paint the door a contrasting color, but you can upholster doors to create a decorative element in an otherwise blah space. MISSED OPPORTUNITY #4: MATCHING METALS So many clients ask me when I am designing their homes, “What
metal finish should we select for the doors, faucets and cabinet hardware?” When I answer brass and chrome, or bronze and copper, I get a look that says, “I think we need another designer!” This is a BIG mistake homeowners are making today. It’s safe to have all the finishes match because you can’t get it wrong. My rule of thumb for fixture finishes is that in a room, all plumbing fixtures should match. Regarding hardware, each floor should have the same finish on the door hardware. Historically, the best hardware was installed in the public rooms, which were on the main floor. MISSED OPPORTUNITY #5: RECESSED LIGHTING VS. DECORATIVE FIXTURES If you follow interior design at all you may have noticed how many decorative lights, or chandeliers, designers are using in a room. This is one of the most significant changes I’ve seen in building/remodeling in the last three years. In my opinion, this is because homes have gotten so large that to continue to place hundreds of cans in a home creates a Swiss cheese effect on the ceiling. Today, decorative lighting is so beautiful. It really is jewelry for the home. Not only is it decorative, but, it’s much more effective, and flattering to light rooms with a combination of surface mounted fixtures and sconces. This allows you much more control when lighting a room than just light coming from the ceiling. So, which of these opportunities have you missed in your home? Even small changes can set you on your way to realizing your home’s fullest potential.

SPRING INTO A GARDEN PARTY BY KRISTA EHRET
Spring has definitely sprung a little early this year. While our allergies may not love the premature arrival, our inner hostess loves it. Outdoor party season is usually wedged into a few short weeks that exist after the icy temps but before the humidity runs us back inside. With an extended spring comes the opportunity for new and fun entertaining ideas. On my list for this season, a feminine, floralinspired garden party. Here are some ideas that can be adapted into your personal style. Work with the space you have. The majority of us don’t have a lush English garden in our backyard. However, you can still pull this theme off. If at all possible, find a level outdoor area that will work for a dining table and drink station. If your green area consists of a balcony, consider opening the windows and doors and getting as much of that fresh air in as possible. Guests can mingle outside, but the actual meal can take place inside. Time of day depends largely on your guest list and their availability. Ideally, I would make this a brunch or lunchtime affair. Make sure guests know they will be outside. When deciding your menu, bring in some natural elements that are fresh, light and flavorful. Fresh basil, mozzarella, and tomato skewers with a balsamic drizzle make the perfect appetizer. The entrée can consist of a citrus vinaigrette salad, rosemary chicken salad with toasted almonds on croissants and fresh melon. For dessert, try something like lavender tea cookies or lemon basil sherbet. Beverage options should also be refreshing. I recommend a blend of hot and cold options. An assortment of herbal teas with fresh lemon 36 SPRING 2021

and honey can be set in pretty teapots with floral cups and saucers. Iced options such as strawberry basil or blueberry honey lemonade can be offered with an optional splash of vodka. Serve these in tall rocks glasses with decorative straws. The garden theme should really come through when selecting your décor. If you have a healthy budget, bring in lots of flowers. Your centerpiece can be a lush mix of peonies or garden roses, hydrangeas and stems of green and pink hypericum berries. Fill old fashioned pitchers with more flowers and use those at varying sizes to decorate the beverage and dessert tables. If your budget is more modest, focus on greenery and herbs. Create a loose greenery runner for the table by using a mix of seeded eucalyptus, lavender stems and a leafy filler of your choice. Drape this down the center of your table as the centerpiece and then create a similar one to tie as a swag across your beverage station. Your dining table should have a clean ivory or light gray linen topped with place settings consisting of a plate or charger, linen napkin, silverware and a glass water goblet. I love the idea of dressing up each setting even more with a pretty place card or menu card, as well as a floral bloom or sprig of greenery. This last suggestion is completely optional, but I would encourage my guests to dress for a tea party. Whether you want a more traditional feel with A-line dresses and hats, or a more bohemian vibe with long flowy dresses, it’s fun to have an excuse to get dressed up and it will really complete the vibe of the event.

Story & Photography by K York There was plenty of Irish cheer along Main Street in downtown Franklin as the 12th pre-St. Patrick’s Day Brew Fest was held. Cloudy skies and some rain did not keep beer lovers from celebrating the Downtown Franklin Association’s annual festival. Twenty different tasting sites with the best local, national and international brews were available to sample. The event raises money for the DFA and its programs that maintain Franklin’s nationally recognized Main Street retail district.

THE LANGUAGE OF
flowers BY MARGIE THESSIN
Although, many societies from the past ascribed meanings to flowers and other flora, it was in the Victorian era that the practice blossomed in England and America. During that constrained time, flowers and plants were used to communicate in cryptic ways words that could not or would not be said aloud. Today, the best way to explore the various signals, signs and messages flowers transmitted by flowers is by exploring late 19th-century cemeteries, called by Douglas Keister, in his field guide to cemeteries Stories in Stone (Gibbs Smith, Publisher, Salt Lake City, 2004), the “Golden Age” of cemetery design and decoration. There, by examining gravestones, one can see the messages survivors communicated about their deceased love ones. Often, the words are flowery, too. But, sometimes the words are plain and simple. The flower says it all. “In Memory of Lucy R. J. Daughter of Mary & William Brown. Born in Susex Co. Va July 14, 1831 And died in Franklin Tenn Sept. 10 1855” The flower engraved into the stone: a bleeding heart. Even young children I lead on tours of Franklin’s City cemetery understand the symbolism of a bleeding heart. At Rest Haven, across the street, “Little Alice McLemore, Born Apr. 5th 1859, Died June 28th 1859” is also remembered with a bleeding heart. Daisies are another flower to represent children, as the simple bloom reflects the innocence of children. On the other end of the age spectrum, a sheaf of wheat carved into a stone represents a “long and fruitful life” of ones allotted four score and ten. William O’Neal Perkins’ marker in City cemetery has not only a sheaf of wheat, it is rife with other symbols. The marker itself is a treestone, which gets the most attention from my visitors who’ve never seen one.
40 SPRING 2021
Treestones developed in the late 1800s from a style of architecture and décor called Victorian Rustic. The treestone was generally just the trunk, carved of limestone, that was also covered with other growing things found Celebrating 10 Years
on living trees. On Perkins’ stone, we find what looks like English ivy. Ivy, an evergreen, represented a belief in eternity. Other meanings were immortality and fidelity. The three-pointed leaves represented the Trinity. The typical treestone was meant to be an oak tree, Keister calls the oak the “King of the Forest,” and oak trees or its leaves are symbols of strength, endurance, eternity, honor, liberty, hospitality, faith and virtue. Flowers and trees serve as Christian symbols. The most obvious is the Easter lily, found on many gravestones. Another is the morning glory, another sign of the Resurrection but also of youth and the bonds of love. Grapes are said to represent the blood of Christ, and the rose, adopted by early Christians, is most often found on the graves of women. In Catholic circles, the rose represented the Virgin Mary. The weeping willow is an obvious symbol of grief and sorrow but has a deeper association with the gospel, because the tree will flourish and remain whole no matter how many branches are cut off, says Keister. Another Perkins’ family grave, N.E. is engraved with a palm tree with the verse “The Righteous Shall Flourish Like a Palm Tree” from Psalm 92:12. The pansy, from the French “pensee” meaning thought, is a symbol of memory and the belief that “attending to the plucked blossom enables one to hear a beloved’s thoughts,” according to Keister. Some stones show just one flower, often a single perfect rose, while others present bouquets with a variety of blooms, including evening primrose, meaning eternal love, memory, youth, hope and sadness, calla lilies, for beauty and marriage and ferns, for humility, frankness and sincerity. Take a stroll with me sometime through Franklin’s historic cemeteries. You’ll be surprised to hear what they have to say! Franklin on Foot offers guided walking tours of Franklin, including City and Rest Haven cemeteries, by reservation.

Pantry Perfect SPRING CLEANING: HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR PANTRY AND KEEP IT THAT WAY BY KATIE JACOBS, STYLINGMYEVERYDAY.COM
42 SPRING 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
PANTRY DESIGNED BY JOANNA TEPLIN AND CLEA SHEARER FROM THE HOME EDIT.
An organized pantry is a real relief for the home cook. Knowing where your go-to items are, and having a system in place to re-stock the pantry when necessary, helps in meal planning and grocery shopping. When you know where everything is, you’ll waste less and thus spend less. Plus, getting that pantry in order is easier than you think! First, start by emptying the entire contents of your pantry. It’s best to start with a clean slate. By taking everything out, you can assess your needs, clean shelves and floors and organize items before putting them back in. Toss expired or stale food (there’s probably more than you think), and combine duplicates - like two half empty bottles of vegetable oil. Next, invest in quality storage solutions. It’s best to buy clear, BPA-free, air-tight, stackable containers. Measure the shelves of your pantry and write it down along with how many containers you’ll need for each category; how many canisters you’ll need for cereal, pasta, dry goods, etc. Take your list to the store, along with a tape measure, and only buy the storage items you need. Look for additional items like Lazy Susan’s for sauces, tiered shelves for canned goods, and baskets for snacks. Don’t forget to think beyond the kitchen section of the store—file folder dividers are great for cake boxes or baking pans.
PANTRY DESIGNED BY JOANNA TEPLIN AND CLEA SHEARER FROM THE HOME EDIT.
Transfer all food to chosen storage containers and label each using clear printable labels or a label maker. Cut cooking instructions and expiration dates off food boxes and tape them to the bottom of the canister lids. Finally, put everything back in the pantry thoughtfully. Arrange items practically by putting food accessed more often on convenient shelves. Group items categorically; canned goods, spices, grains, oils, making it easy to locate specific items down the road. To maintain an organized pantry, declutter on a weekly basis (perhaps during meal planning). Take some time once a month to re-group items logically that have wandered during every-day use. After spending some time using your pantry, it’s okay to reprioritize items or reconfigure storage solutions as needed. The most important thing to remember is to make it work for you! A clean, organized pantry makes meal planning and cooking a lot easier and more fun.

TIPS: • Line up spices in alphabetical order. • Store lunch boxes on wall hooks. • Use stackable metal baskets for vegetables. • Use glass jars, Mason or Weck, for smaller items like chocolate chips. • Turn all packaging labels to face out.

Nashville Homes Are the 18th Most Expensive per Square Foot One of the COVID-19 pandemic’s most noteworthy economic effects is the unusual set of conditions currently facing the real estate market. After a full year of working and schooling from home—and with many employers considering whether to continue remote work arrangements even after the pandemic is under control—living space is at a premium. Simultaneously, government stabilization and stimulus measures during the pandemic, including sustained low interest rates and multiple rounds of cash payments to individual households, have pumped money into the economy. For middle and upper-income earners whose jobs easily transitioned to remote work—and never experienced the economic shock of losing a job—these measures have helped boost savings rates to record levels. A growing number of would-be home buyers now have both motivation and means to buy. But buyers’ interest has not been met with a surge of supply, and inventories are at record low levels. And the laws of economics hold true: when demand is high and supply is low, the outcome is rising prices. Over the last year, the average price of U.S. residential real estate is up $27 per square foot from February 2020 to February 2021, an increase of nearly 20%. The analysis found that in 2020, the median price per square foot in the Nashville metro area increased by 8.99% in 2020 to $175.95 per square foot. Out of all large U.S. metros, Nashville is the 18th most expensive per square foot.

POOL PREP 101 with Clearwater Pools
So you’ve dreamed about it, imagined the many ways it will enhance your family’s lives, discussed it with your significant other, and you’ve decided: You are going to build a swimming pool! Now, where to start? Building a swimming pool is a very large project that you will love (or hate) for the rest of the time you own your home. Choosing your contractor is a big decision! Here are some tips to help you get started and choose the contractor that will best meet your swimming pool needs! and drawings, the contract and warranties and decide which contractor you would like to work with. Ask the contractors more questions to clarify their proposals.
5. VERY IMPORTANT: Your contractor
should have a contractor’s license, liability insurance, and strong customer references. Make sure you ask for proof of these and actually call at least three of the references!
6. SIGN UP Let your contractor know you
would like them to build your pool. Once you sign the contract you will be asked to provide a down payment. 10% to 15% is the most you should be asked to put down. The contract should include a draw schedule that keeps at least 10% for your final payment.
7. WAIT Building a pool takes anywhere from
1. RESEARCH Google, the Yellow Pages, referrals from friends and local home publications are great resources to create a short list of potential contractors. This is also the time to check the Better Business rating of the companies you are considering. Look over the websites and review sites like Angie’s List and Yelp. 2. MAKE CONTACT Call to set up appointments with the contractors you have
chosen. Start with at least three companies so you can compare proposals. You’ll probably be asked if you know if you’d like a gunite or vinyl swimming pool, if you want a spa and water feature or other questions regarding your project. The answers to these questions will help the contractor bring appropriate materials to your meeting. Some clients know exactly what they want, while others are looking to their contractor for guidance.
3. MEET WITH YOUR CONTRACTORS At this meeting, your contractor will look at your yard and home and talk with you about what you are looking for in your pool and backyard. Your contractor will show you pictures and examples of different styles and materials available in pool construction. You may also discuss spas, outdoor kitchens and fireplaces, planters and fire features! This is a good time to discuss a ballpark budget with your contractors. At the conclusion of the meeting the contractor should have a good idea of the pool he needs to draw and bid for you. 4. MEET AGAIN Once your contractor has a proposal and drawing ready for you, he or she will call you for another appointment to go over them. Review all proposals

six to twelve weeks depending on the project and the weather. As they say, you can’t bake a cake without breaking some eggs, and building a pool is a messy project! Be prepared for mud in your project area!
8. SWIM AND ENJOY Once your project is complete you and your contractor will meet again to look over the project and come up with a punch list. Once the punch list is complete, your contractor will ask for the final payment and your project will be complete! 9. MAINTENANCE Make sure to ask how
to care for your pool. You can take your water in to a local pool and spa chemical retailer and they can test your water and recommend chemicals needed to balance your water. Or you can test your water on your own and add needed chemicals or you can pay a service company to clean your pool weekly! Follow these steps and you can have the pool of your dreams in no time!!

Three Entryways, Walkups, and Porches that Wow ‘Easy-to-DIY’ Plant Combinations WITH THE SOUTHERN LIVING COLLECTION FEATURING ENCORE AZALEA
When it comes to home landscapes, nothing says spring in the Southeast like a front entry lush with bright blooms, cheerful colors, and the gentle scents of the season. The right combination of plants can dazzle all season long but picking plants that complement each other can be tricky if landscaping is a new frontier for you. Luckily, we’ve taken the guesswork out of gardening with three “easy-to-DIY” plant combinations that are guaranteed to wow every time!
Teriffic Texture
Texture provides the biggest payoff from a design standpoint when used to create contrast. Looking to line a flagstone path, brick wall, or stone stairway? Start with sinuous foliage close to the ground and build up from there. The fine-textured foliage of a grass-like Carex (we love ‘Everillo’ EverColor Carex from the Southern Living Plant Collection) softens the hard edges of stone and brickwork, settling hardscapes comfortably into the garden. To complete the look, soar to new heights with the pillow-soft texture of a hydrangea like the deep red Heart Throb® Hydrangea or bright White Wedding® Hydrangea.
60 SPRING 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
Floral Fragrance
Fragrance and flare are a classy combo that folds seamlessly into any style landscape. Rooted along a walkway or framing a formal entryway, use dramatic foliage and nostalgic aroma to engulf the senses. Add the dreamy fragrance of a gardenia like Fool Proof™ Gardenia to evoke memories of grandma’s garden. Next, combine chartreuse hues like ‘LemonLime’ Nandina with rich jewel tones (try Purple Pixie® Dwarf Weeping Loropetalum or Purple Daydream® Dwarf Loropetalum) for a combination that is decidedly modern. This white-chartreuse-purple trio also performs beautifully in large containers. Another classic Southern choice for fragrance is a magnolia; the new ‘Stellar Ruby’ Magnolia figo, or banana shrub, offers pinkish to ruby magnolia-like flowers scented like bananas in late spring into summer and early fall.
Cheerful Color Pantone’s Color of the Year, a cheerful “Illuminating Yellow,” has us looking on the bright side for garden color combinations. Start with golden foliage, like Touch of Gold® Holly, to bring the sunshine. Next, try a row of cheerful golden flowers that can be enjoyed in the landscape, or even arranged as cut flowers. ‘Real Goldcup’ Leucanthemum Realflor® is a sunny Shasta daisy that attracts birds and butterflies. Accent your yellow plantings with a warm complementary color to make their sunny hues pop. It’s a Breeze® Rose or Autumn Starburst® from Encore® Azalea offers flowers in reds or bright corals that will repeat bloom across multiple seasons. When planning your landscape, be sure to consider the size of your area, its natural features, hardscape materials, and sun exposure. By choosing plants that add color, texture and fragrance, you’ll make winning combinations every time.
Encore® Azalea is the world’s best-selling multi-season blooming azalea. Its 33 varieties and range of sizes enliven landscapes with rich, colorful blooms in spring, summer and fall. Visit EncoreAzalea.com to learn more.
The Southern Living® Plant Collection provides gardeners with innovative new plants designed to solve specific landscape challenges and to excel in Southern gardens. Privately situated at the end of a picturesque winding drive, this home has been described as “the finest Greek Revival home” in Middle Tennessee. Our Black
Brick House WITH JOELLE MASTERSON, EPICALLY STYLISH
When I first told people I was going to paint our house black I got two reactions, either “Wow! That is going to look amazing!” or they’d look at me like I’d lost my mind. We did it anyway and let me tell you, our home looks incredible. Actually, it looks way better than I ever imagined. We paint our homes white, gray, navy or brown. Why not black? Black is a neutral color and in my personal opinion, the best color. It appears these days everyone building new homes are going with a white home with black accents. However, recently black on black or black with white accents is trending. Black paint emphasizes the architectural details of the home or building. From the moment we purchased our home, I knew painting the exterior was a must. For the last three years the interior of our home did not match the outside. We almost painted our home white when we first moved in and I am so thankful we waited. With a 66 SPRING 2021
Celebrating 10 Years
love for home decor and interior design, each room of our home is decorated with mindfulness and style. The inside is classic using a black and white color pallet, mixed with glam and modern details. I knew from the moment I saw a painted black brick wall, our exterior had to be black. Since painting our home, we have had so many people stop to take pictures and ask questions. With being bold and brave we gave our home the ultimate makeover. We used Sherwin Williams outdoor paint in the color Tricorn Black. Make sure you hire a professional to do the painting. We used the company CertaPro and they did a fantastic job! I am a big believer that the outside of your home shares a little bit of who you are with the world. Our house now tells a story of our style from the outside in. If you are considering painting the exterior of your home black, I am here to tell you to do it. Xo, Joelle
Coat Cubby DIY Elevate your entrance by adding a touch of style to your cubby space. Brian and I had so much fun knocking out this DIY project. It’s amazing what tape, paint and baskets can do. I rarely paid attention to how boring the cubby area of our home looked. Now it pops and every time I hang a jacket or take off my shoes I can’t help but smile. Loving the spaces you live in truly makes the difference. The fun part about this project is you can be creative. Naturally, we did black and white to match the rest of our home. I didn’t want to black out the entire space, instead we left the outside white and painted the interior black. To give our coat cubby a fun funky feel, we added stripes on the beadboard and wallpaper behind the hooks. I personally don’t love color and prefer to mix prints. If you have space like this in your home I highly recommend making it your own. It’s a simple budget friendly project that takes minimal time has a grand result. I hope this inspires you to create a fun space to hang your coats and place your shoes!
What we used: • Painters tape • Sherwin Williams satin cabinet paint in Tricorn • Paint & Primer black spay paint for hooks • Opal house speckled dot wallpaper • Decorative baskets are from Target and the pillow is from TJmaxx JOELLE MASTERSON epicallystylish.com
Joelle Masterson has always had a love for fashion and interior design. Classic black and white decor speaks to her soul. She finds great joy in sharing our home and styling tips and her goal is to inspire others to step out of the box, be unique and create a space they love to live in.

Southern Etiquette Must Do’s
WITH SHELLY ROBERTSON BIRDSONG
While we realize that the days of white gloves and calling “cards may be gone, good manners and solid traditions should
never go out of style. After all, Southern gentility, hospitality, and good manners are as central to a Southerner’s identity as sipping a glass of sweet tea on a hot day. While the world is changing, things like humility, courtesy, and basic politeness are mainstays of any civilized society and that should never change. - SOUTHERN LIVING
That quote says it all as far as I am concerned. Living in today’s society, lacking in moral character and decency and civility so much of the time, while raising two children of my own, I am keenly aware of the lack of manners and traditional childhood behavior teaching in today’s society. A world of difference from when and how I was raised. Obviously, all of this starts at home and I am of course quite capable of rising to the challenge. Trust me… if any and all of these things on this list are possible – between myself, my parents, my grandmother, Emily Post, and Scarlett O’Hara - I will ensure that they continue. Some things just never go out of style, and acting proper, is definitely one of them! SAYING PLEASE AND THANK YOU Um… can I get an amen! Saying please and thank you are the bedrock of human civility. Children who have just learned to talk can master the art of expressing gratitude, yet many adults have seemingly forgotten the skill. SAYING MA’AM AND SIR Again...When children call adults sir or ma’am it is a sign of respect and teaching children to respect each other, and their elders is important. As the Manners Mentor website says, “Respect is so important to emphasize to our children because it’s the cornerstone of other invaluable character traits such as tolerance, selflessness, giving, and compassion.” PROPER TABLE MANNERS Well, in today’s world of electronic devices, we are all challenged to make the dinner table, if nothing else, the center of decorum and manners in your home for at least long enough to have supper! You don’t have to know the proper placement of an oyster fork in a formal table setting to have good table manners. The rules are the same for children or adults: Put your napkin in your lap, talk to people on your left and your right, wait until everyone has their food before eating, and, of course, no phones at the dinner table. (As for that oyster fork, it goes to the right of the spoons, according to Emily Post). 70 SPRING 2021

”
CURSIVE WRITING Thankfully not a lost art as my child came home from school the other day to show me (albeit marveling at the uniqueness of the idea), cursive letter practicing. Thank goodness some things are sacred! HANDWRITTEN NOTES My children had stationary with their names on it before they were born! Nothing says gracious like personalized note cards for thank you’s and even with a gift. I admit to being remiss often, with getting a thank you out, and have even sent one as much as a year later, realizing that it is NEVER too late to be polite and grateful. RECIPE CARDS I do love Pinterest – but my grandmother’s handwritten recipe cards are treasured. And really – the worn edges and spill marks make it even more special when you whip up that cake recipe still staining the card, that you had as a child! SUNDAY SUPPERS I am still trying to convince my family to make this a weekly ritual. Sitting down to a meal or simply the act of gathering – is a time honored and lovely tradition, that keeps all family, a regular part of a child’s life and upbringing. HOLDING THE DOOR FOR OTHERS Male or female – always, always, always, when you can. If you’ve gone to the trouble of opening the door, it’s easy enough to hold it for another minute or two to help the person using the door after you. WELCOMING NEW NEIGHBORS Again, something I am remiss at and want to get better at – because who doesn’t love the neighbor who brings them a pie or bottle of wine to say welcome to the neighborhood! A GOOD HANDSHAKE In the age of COVID, so many have abandoned this simple way to assess a person almost immediately. I mean really, carry your hand sanitizer with you and you can rid yourself of any germs you may feel you have encountered. But please, please, please – continue to shake
hands. Fist bumps are awkward and do not convey a person’s sincerity. I can size someone up in an instant just by how they shake your hand: Do they look you in the eye directly while doing so? Do they know to shake with the right hand? Is that grip firm or flimsy? And are they truly committed to it with a hand over the handshake or leaning in for a hug while shaking the hand? DRESSING UP FOR CHURCH I can still remember picking my grandmother up for church every Sunday, and she never came to the car without stockings and gloves on. I firmly believe that church is a time for honor and respect. One way to show that, is in your attire. At best, go ahead and wear a suit and or a dress – yes even the kids. I know everyone wants to be casual these days, and of course the Lord doesn’t care what you wear- but some things are just more reverent when you aren’t in shorts, a t-shirt or jeans.
Live Music Tuesday - Sunday
SMILING AT STRANGERS Again, in the age of COVID and masking, we have all gotten used to never seeing a smile anymore. And that my friends – has got to end. Smiling at fellow human beings across the way, is how we show who we are and that we value them. Or that we simply want to brighten their day. And it does doesn’t it – when you smile at someone and they smile back, or you get smiled at when you least expect it! It warms the heart and instills faith that we are all in this together. RSVP OMG! Please. Just do it. Even if by text. JUST DO IT! HOSTESS GIFTS Keep bottles of wine, scented candles or grab some fresh flowers on the way – but never, ever, ever, ever, maybe if it’s your momma’s, but probably not even then – NEVER, go to someone’s home that you have been formally invited to for a meal or gathering – and show up empty handed. Please. Just do not. This list could go on and on. But you get the idea, I am sure. I long for the day of seen and not heard... oh wait, did I say that outloud? But, there was a time, when the very thought of raising our voice or behaving disrespectfully around adults, would incite the fear of... a switch or having our mouths washed out with soap! Oh, the good ole days! Truth, but tongue and cheek, of course! Until next time... remember... if you can’t find something nice to say... come sit next to me. (Classic one-liner stolen from that favorite of all southern chick flicks: Steel Magnolia’s). Insight and list provided by the fine folks at southernliving.com

LIFESTYLE Eat, Drink & Be Merry 2015 Celebrating 10 Years of Fabulous Content with Special Anniversary Repeat Article
RUN FOR THE R SES Friends, We have hopped into spring with our Easter bonnets on and will continue wearing many hats during the next several months. These next few weeks we will begin our spring planting in our favorite pots, window boxes and gardens. Hopefully, some of the rose bushes have survived the winter freeze and we will be able to start enjoying their beautiful colors and aromas. When I think of roses, the Kentucky Derby comes to mind. The Kentucky Derby is the horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky the first Saturday in May. The race is known in the United States as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” and is also called “The Run For The Roses.” In 1872, Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. traveled to England to visit their Derby. From England, he went to Paris, France, where in 1863, a group of racing enthusiasts formed the French Jockey Club. Returning home to Kentucky, Clark initiated all the plans for a Derby to be run in Louisville. On May 17, 1875 the first Derby was run and the rest is history. A horse race mandates stylish hats for both men and women, beverages and, of course, the finest of food. Often the guests will have a brunch before the race as well as box lunches in tow for enjoying later. Years ago, I began having a brunch for my friends before the big race and titled it: “Run For The Roses.” Captured in this article is the entire brunch menu from “Hosting Without Hassle.” I have shared several of the recipes here, and will be sharing more via social media. Whether you are at the race or in front of the television, these recipes will guarantee you will be a winner. Hats Off to the Races!

Every Home Needs A Well-Stocked Bar WITH CHRISTY BURKHALTER AND GINO DESALVATORE OF FRANKLIN WINE AND SPIRITS
Having a well-stocked bar at home has a different meaning for everyone. If you enjoy entertaining guests, a properly stocked home bar is a must. Think about what you like to drink and serve at home and set up your bar to fit your individual style, taste and budget. If your favorite cocktail is the Negroni, you will need a great gin. Love making Margaritas for friends? Tequila should be your first purchase. Keep in mind, the main customer of your at-home-bar is YOU and selections should include your favorites and those of your frequent guests. Our first tip…start small. Stocking a home bar can be affordable and easy with at least one or two bottles of the base spirits. This will help you create a well-rounded bar as these are the foundations for most cocktails. Vodka’s versatility makes it an essential spirit for any home bar and is the key ingredient of some of the most popular cocktails such as vodka tonics, screwdrivers, and the vodka martini. The best tequilas are made from 100% agave – check the label. Sweeter tequila-based mixed drinks such as margaritas and palomas are best made using silver tequila. In contrast, reposado and añejo tequilas are barrel aged therefore mellowing the taste, making a better choice for sipping.
Gin for martinis, negroni and gin and tonics can all be made using a quality London Dry style. Rum for daiquiris and mojitos are typically light, crisp and sharp. Dark rums tend to be rich and smooth and mellow for making a Mai Tai or a rum Old Fashioned. A bottle of whiskey could easily become the single most expensive item on your bar, but if you are making Manhattan’s, an old fashioned or whiskey sour there are many affordable options such as Benchmark Bourbon made by the Buffalo Trace Distillery or Rittenhouse Rye named best affordable rye. Stocking aperitifs and cordials elevates your home bar’s total offerings and adds true sophistication and finesse. Flavor profiles range from creamy, luscious and nutty to fruit-forward and bold. Bitters are your spices. The three essential ones are Angostura, Regan’s Orange Bitters and Peychaud’s but there are also a lot of fun flavored bitters available (such as chocolate or rhubarb), and it is an easy way to change up a familiar cocktail. Tools, glassware and mixers: A few rocks glasses, martini glasses and highballs will get you started. Cocktail shakers and spoons are the
foundation of any bar utensils set. The jigger helps measure out proper alcohol amounts. A two-sided standard jigger holds half an ounce on its smaller end, while its larger end measures one full ounce. High-quality tonics, like Q or Fever Tree brands are ideal. You will also want to keep a supply of soda water, seltzer and ginger beer — any of these go with a base spirit and ice to make a highball. Don’t forget garnishes such as a lime slice or cherries, other popular choices may be fresh herbs, including mint, basil and rosemary sprigs. A bar space will become a gathering point in your home when you entertain. We hope this inspires you to get started stocking (or replenish) your home bar today. Stop by Franklin Wine & Spirits for shopping assistance! Simple recipes to get started…
MANHATTAN 2 oz. whiskey (bourbon or rye) 1 oz. sweet vermouth 2 dashes bitters Cocktail cherry Combine ingredients over ice and stir for 30 seconds. Strain into a glass and top it with the cherry as garnish.
MARGARITA 2 oz. tequila (or split it evenly with mezcal) 1 oz. fresh lime juice ½ oz. agave nectar (but you can make simple syrup at home in a pinch) Lime Combine ingredients in a shaker, over ice. Give it several good shakes, then strain into a chilled glass over a single large ice cube.

Losing a pet is very scary. Pets can get loose from their owners while on walks, from out of their backyard, at the dog park... Williamson County Animal Center has a guide on what to do if your pet is lost or if you have found a lost/stray pet. Visit wcac.org for more information.
If you have a LOST dog or cat:
1. Check the neighborhood first, asking if your pet has been seen. 2. Find photos of the pet that shows the face and body markings. 3. Please complete the online “Lost Pet” form and include a photo. 4. Notify your pet’s microchip company to flag the pet as lost, and update your contact information. If you adopted from WCAC, your dog or cat should be microchipped. If you don’t know your pet’s microchip info, please contact them. 5. Register and upload a head shot of your lost pet to FindingRover.com, a photo facial recognition system. 6. After filling out the lost pet report, please also post your pet on neighborhood social media and neighborhood lost and found pet pages below. Be sure to include cross streets of the last known location.
If you have FOUND a stray dog or cat in Williamson County:

Take a photo of the pet in good light. Get a front-on nose shot that shows the pet’s face. 5. Please complete the Found Pet online form and include a photo. 6. Register and upload a head shot of the found pet to FindingRover.com, a facial recognition system. 7. Consider offering to hold the pet for a STRAYcation during the required five business day stray hold period. WCAC can provide you with everything you need: Leash, bowl, food, crate, litter, and basic vaccinations. 8. After filling out the Found Pet form, please also post the found pet on neighborhood and local lost and found social media pages below. Tip. Do not mention gender or collar details. If you are contacted by another person directly claiming to be the owner, ask for proof of ownership or contact WCAC for assistance. 9. Post signs in the neighborhood. Include a photo and your contact info or shelter where the pet has been taken. 10. If owner is not found, you may bring the stray to the shelter Monday-Friday from 10am-6pm. Distinctively Williamson Business
Where Home and family Come First David Webber, originally from Louisville, Kentucky, opened Limestone Title in 2009 after having moved here nearly a decade earlier to open Heritage Title Services. He subsequently sold the company and started Limestone. A family owned business, Limestone Title now closes transactions in four states: Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky and Florida. They have five physical locations across Tennessee and Kentucky and close both residential and commercial transactions. “I moved to Middle Tennessee in 2001 at the ripe age of twenty one to open a title company,” says owner, David Webber. “I quickly learned that I was going to have to do something out of the box to gain any sort of position in this market. The solution was to bring a new level of customer service to the real estate title process. We realized that most closings were happening in an attorney’s office between 9-4 and not after 3 on Fridays. We started offering closings anytime, anywhere, at no additional cost. We also got licensed in
multiple states as a way to get in the door of local banks. The strategy paid off as we grew that business and sold it in 2007. “ David has been married to Tarah Adkins Webber since 2007. They have three children: Hadley, Henry and Jackson. Family and the community are an integral part of the culture of Limestone Title and David wants to grow the business while also maintaining strong community ties with Battle Ground Academy, where the children attend school and everything in between. “We stay busy traveling and playing sports. We are either skiing, on the lake, or watching volleyball, basketball, football, or swim meets. We adore all things Franklin and would not want to raise our children anywhere else. It is truly the perfect place to raise a family,” he says. “Throw in the fact that it’s one the fastest growing real estate markets in the country - and it is amazing!” When Limestone began in 2009, it was with a goal in mind to achieve distinction on the customer service level and also be able to raise a family in a unique and thriving community. Focus on the local markets, rather than national has proven to be a very successful plan. Now, in 2021 they have fifty employees and close approximately 800 or so transactions a month with 90% of those being in Nashville and Louisville, Kentucky.

Home Improvements GIFTING IN 2020 WITH KELLY FIELDS, FIRSTBANK
IMPROVE MORE. ENJOY MORE. WITH A FIRSTBANK HOME EQUITY LINE OF CREDIT
Can we officially say that spring is here? With warmer weather, comes the desire to spruce up your home. The parking lots at home improvement stores stay packed. Neighbors have bags of mulch in their yard. More daylight and warmer weather mean more time outdoors. Whether you are looking to build a new outdoor kitchen, add a home addition, or install an irrigation system, now is the time. Home improvement projects don’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help get you started. 1) Plan your project and priorities. Have a vision. Look at various magazines, do some searching online, head to a paint store. There are so many options available now to give you some inspiration. Prioritize your various needs. Projects can get stalled if you take on too much at once. 2) Unless you are doing the work yourself, use your network to find a proven professional. Check reviews on the web or ask your neighbors for recommendations. Meet in person and ensure you are on the same page. It’s important to establish good rapport with the person working on your project. Good communication is a must. 3) Once you have identified who will do the work, create a realistic budget from their estimate. Consider giving yourself some cushion to allow for any unexpected items that might pop up. No one likes additional expenses when it comes to home improvements. 4) Explore your options on how to pay for the project whether it be a credit card, personal loan, or home equity line of credit (HELOC). A HELOC is a revolving credit line secured by the equity you’ve built in your home and can be used as needed. They typically have lower interest rates than a personal loan or credit card. Ask your local bank about a HELOC if you don’t already have one established.
Whether you need cash for a new home project or to fund your vacation plans, ask about our Home Equity program that can give new meaning to dream home. • Competitive Rates • Flexibility • Apply Fast & Easy
5) Don’t forget to track expenses to your budget. Approving a few extra dollars here and there can really add up over time. Keep up with your costs through each project phase to ensure you are sticking to your plan. While you might need to be flexible, it’s good to know exactly where your money is being spent. Hopefully, you will find these tips useful as you begin to plan for your next project. With that in mind, bring on summer!

Let’s Play In The Dirt
BY MINDY SPRADLIN
So much of this past year has been focused on cleanliness and sanitizing everything, so the thought of letting your child play in the dirt, dig in the dirt, roll in the dirt, and even put dirt in his or her mouth might totally freak you out. But hang with me for a second. Playing in the dirt is actually HIGHLY beneficial, both for younger kids and older kids. Dr. Jack Gilbert, Director of the Microbiome Institute and author of Dirt is Good, states: “Let your kids experience as much microbial diversity as you can find. Get them outside, let them interact with animals, allow them to play in the dirt, rivers, streams, ocean. Don’t sterilize everything they are going to touch or put into their mouth.” Yep, you read that correctly. Dirt is good and over-sterilizing can actually create health issues in children. So, send them outside! Let them make mudpies, feel the dirt between their toes, cover themselves in it, and have some good, old school, fun. There are many, many benefits children experience when allowed to play freely in dirt and mud, but I’ll share three of my favorites with you: Lowers Stress Levels and Anxiety Playing in the dirt benefits children’s sensory development, grounds them, and encourages creative thinking. This leads to calmer, happier children.

More Vitamin D Having optimal levels of vitamin D is vital for overall physical and mental health. If kids are outside playing in the dirt, they are also more likely to be getting sun and an influx of vitamin D. Even just thirty minutes outside can make a massive difference in overall vitamin D levels. GOOD for the Immune System “Without exposure to everyday germs, which can be found in mud, children miss out on building a stronger, more robust immunity to sickness,” Dr. Ryan Harvey from House Call Doctor explains. In small doses, the microbes found in dirt help our immune systems learn what they need to fight off illnesses later in life. Research also shows that being introduced to a wide variety of microbes early in life decreases the chances that a child will struggle with common issues such as allergies and asthma. So not only is playing in the dirt FUN for children, but it also offers fantastic health benefits. Let the kids be kids and get DIRTY! And whatever you do, don’t run and grab sanitizing wipes and sanitize them as soon as they come inside. Clean them off with water and plain soap if needed but allow those microbes to do their job. Williamson Countian Pens Memoir During 2020 Pandemic Author Illuminates Places Locals Call Home, Tells Stories of Service Overseas Crossing Creeks, Bridging Rivers and Laying Cornerstones: Recollections of Ronald Crutcher offers readers a heartfelt memoir that begins in rural Williamson County, where the author, the first in his family to graduate high school, experienced an adventurous boyhood in the post-World War II era. Inspired to write his life story by his Battle Ground Academy mentor and friend, David Wood, Crutcher set out first to create clever prose for his grandchildren. Soon after he began his project, all manner of social life came to a halt when stores, churches, public and private organizations, and businesses shut down operations as the world witnessed the beginning of an unprecedented pandemic. The recollections for his family became the primary focus for Crutcher. But his wife of fifty four years was not convinced his stories were limited to the interests of his children and grandchildren. Joyce McMillan Crutcher, an avid reader and retired teacher, urged him to consider expanding the book as she began editing his work. One year later, the culmination of his writing and research is a beautifully illustrated collection of stories that offer fascinating portraits of people and places, from the frigid winter isolation of farm life in Williamson County’s Owl Hollow to the sweltering heat of Southeast Asia on the coast of South Vietnam to the arid desert of Saudi Arabia.
this book will capture and stretch your imagination. But I am also excited to share the stories of my adult experiences in construction management including my early work with Nashville’s Foster and Creighton Company and, most especially, the opportunity to establish The Parent Company, which continues to serve Middle Tennessee today.” In what could be considered a full-circle event, Crutcher will deliver his first published book to Main Street’s Landmark Booksellers in Franklin, seventy years after his grandmother “carried” him in 1951 to the same Main Street to purchase his schoolbooks for first grade. It is fitting that Marie Crafton Hicks, Crutcher’s maternal grandmother, is among the family members for whom the book is dedicated. Crossing Creeks, Bridging Rivers and Laying Cornerstones features several hand-illustrations created especially for Crutcher by Nashville artist Caroline Harwood, who also graphicallydesigned the book for BookBaby Publishing. The collection of more than seventy photographs includes selections from Tennessee’s State Library and Archives, the Metropolitan Nashville Archives, as well as images provided by The Parent Company of Brentwood, Tennessee. The author’s personal collection highlights home life in rural Williamson County, even an image of interstate construction on land once used to grow tobacco.
Divided into three parts, readers are invited to join Crutcher as he recounts the mischievous but hilarious antics of youth in Crossing Creeks, the turmoil of Vietnam in Bridging Rivers, and the satisfaction gained in Laying Cornerstones while overseeing the construction of a central landmark in the town he calls home.
Crossing Creeks spins story, upon story of how Ronald Crutcher finds delight in exploration, trust in education, and liberation in laughter. These qualities of character enabled him to make the leap into what might have been an overwhelming culture at Vanderbilt University in the early sixties. Trust in education was central to Crutcher’s persistence, even as personal struggles could have stalled his journey toward graduation.
“I hope what I have written gives an honest and clear picture of what it was like to grow up in Williamson County, with limited means but abundant possibilities,” said Crutcher, whose engagement in numerous community organizations spans decades. “This memoir offers a fresh look at a familiar place. What that means is, whether you are ‘from around here,’ as we say in the South, or ‘just moved here,’ I believe
In Bridging Rivers, the pride gained from his Vanderbilt engineering degree was a humble memory as he joined American troops in the jungles of Vietnam. Charged with building roads that were critical to troop movements, Crutcher employed his formal Vanderbilt training, but also used the much-valued ingenuity he learned growing up on the farm. He was resourceful, creative, focused, and tension-driven to

The events outlined in Laying Cornerstones are a gift of circumstance, but also the natural outcome of a deeply personal connection to Crutcher’s home community of Williamson County. The heyday boom years of suburban development in Middle Tennessee left Williamson County leaders with a true dilemma – how to manage a burgeoning need for public schools. These years, decades that connect two centuries in history, solidify his legacy as a steward of fate, good conscience, and sound construction principles. Touchstones of Nashville’s history and Franklin’s charm abound in this down-to-earth memoir, an important recollection of events, relationships, and business experiences that shine a personal light on how people forge ahead when Crossing Creeks, Bridging Rivers and Laying Cornerstones. A Williamson County, Tennessee native, Ronald Crutcher is retired from The Parent Company, a construction management firm he helped found in 1984. He was with Foster and Creighton Company, a 100-year-old Nashvillebased construction concern, where he helped lead the first major renovation and expansion of Vanderbilt Stadium since its establishment in 1923. He played a major role in the construction of The First American Center in downtown Nashville, at which time a prehistoric cave was discovered during excavation. The relics unearthed in 1971 were secured by archaeologists and later became the inspiration for naming Nashville’s hockey team, The Predators. His assignment to oversee the expansion of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was his second experience overseas and one that solidified his love of the “good ole USA.” Beginning in the eighties, he managed the construction of twenty-six public schools and, in 2004, the new Williamson County Courthouse. A graduate of Battle Ground Academy and Vanderbilt University School of Engineering, he is a Vietnam veteran who served with the 35th Engineer Group of the U.S. Army. He has volunteered his time and talents to support such non-profits as Habitat for Humanity; The Housing Fund; The Franklin Rotary at Breakfast; the Boys and Girls Club; and Franklin Tomorrow. He and his wife Joyce reside in Franklin where they attend Franklin First Presbyterian Church. The couple’s two adult daughters reside in Missouri and Virginia with their families.

MONTHLY Did You Know 2015 Celebrating 10 Years of Fabulous Content with Special Anniversary Repeat Article
DID YOU KNOW? THE KENTUCKY DERBY It’s that time of year when horse racing takes center stage — and track. None more famous and celebrated than the Kentucky Derby.
ALTERNATIVELY REFERRED TO AS “THE RUN FOR THE ROSES” OR “THE MOST EXCITING TWO MINUTES IN SPORTS,” THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS A 1.25 MILE RACE FOR THREE-YEAR-OLD THOROUGHBRED HORSES. THE KENTUCKY DERBY DRAWS AN AVERAGE OF 150,000 VISITORS EACH YEAR, INCLUDING RESIDENTS, OUT-OF-TOWNERS, CELEBRITIES, PRESIDENTS, AND EVEN MEMBERS OF ROYAL FAMILIES. By the early 1900s, owners of winning Kentucky Derby horses started sending their winners to run in the Preakness Stakes in Maryland and the Belmont Stakes in New York. In 1930, sportswriter Charles Hatton coined the term “Triple Crown” in reference to the same horses running the three races consecutively.
The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. It is an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint, and a sweet syrup and is traditionally served in a commemorative Kentucky Derby glass.
THE FIRST KENTUCKY DERBY RACE OCCURRED IN 1875. CLOSE TO 10,000 PEOPLE WATCHED AS 15 THOROUGHBRED HORSES RAN WHAT WAS THEN A 1.5 MILE COURSE. IN 1876, THE LENGTH OF THE RACE WAS CHANGED TO 1.25 MILES.
The fastest horse to ever run the Kentucky Derby was Secretariat. In 1973, the Triple Crown-winning horse ran the 1 1/4 miles in 1 minute 59 seconds.
