Publisher’s Letter

“Every father should remember one day his son will follow his example, not his advice.” – Charles Kettering

Bo, Calhoun & Keeling Birdsong

Dear Readers,

As we celebrate the gentlemen in our lives this month with Father’s Day and this annual gentleman’s issue, I can’t help but think back on my father and what a gentleman he was. He had many sayings I often heard while growing up that I thought were hilarious at the time. But today I totally understand sentiments like “anything free I can’t afford” or “if it wasn’t that, it’d be something else.” I never heard the man raise his voice, and maybe that is because I was afraid he would raise his belt too – and that, I did see him do! He never met a stranger. He treated everyone with kindness and as an equal. I think back on numerous times that I watched him do for the elderly, care for and provide for those in

Celebrate the Gentlemen in YOUR Life need. He always wanted to give a helping hand especially to those who might be in a rough spot or down on their luck. I can recall he would pick up hitchhikers and bring them to our small town, buy them a motel room and a meal and then early the next morning, he would take them a change of clothes and drive them an hour in whatever direction they were heading. But not before making sure he gave them some spending money. I am certain there was a conversation with them before he let them out about straightening up, and he wished them well. He came from very humble beginnings, and I am sure he knew firsthand what it was like to be down and out. I realize, only now, what a success he had become from where he came from. I know he did all he could as a father and for that, I am eternally grateful. The older I got, the smarter that man was in my eyes. Remembering him now with the eyes and experience of an adult and father myself, I am saddened that he never got to know my children and even more so for them, growing up without him in their lives. As life tells us, I can carry on the lessons I have learned from him and try to be more like him in many ways. Hopefully, I will pass those best qualities down to my children, especially

my sons, as I raise them to be the southern gentlemen their grandfather was. Those qualities of: Being kind, caring, fun and funny, thoughtful, respectful, appreciative and humble, truly do define him and what I think of when I think of what a southern gentleman is. Once a year, I pen this Publisher’s letter as part of our annual tribute to our community’s leading men. I enjoy this issue for all that it holds of interest to gentlemen as well as all of the summer content – my favorite season! This issue is no exception and, in some ways, even more so, as we pay tribute to several gentlemen both my wife and I know and knew. Saying goodbye to some greats in our community and lives in general, with profiles and features in this issue, gives meaning to the word legacy. The legacy of great men is all around us, and I know I am better having known so many of them personally. Even to hear about those I did not have the privilege to know, fills me with respect and honor to recognize them here. Enjoy this issue, gentlemen AND ladies. Happy Summer!

YOUR Health & Wellness

Top Five Essential Men’s Health Screenings WITH WILLIAMSON MEDICAL CENTER Your annual physical generally includes a standard battery of screenings, from checking your blood pressure levels to checking for diabetes and cholesterol. But what other screenings might be necessary for your overall health and wellness? June is Men’s Health Month, so we are looking at a few additional screenings you may want to talk about with your healthcare provider. Melanoma Screening While melanoma is a less common form of skin cancer, it is much more likely to affect men and can quickly spread to other parts of the body if it is not caught and treated early. According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 60,000 men will be diagnosed with melanoma in 2022. Dr. Don Patterson, who practices internal medicine at Williamson Medical Group, suggests wearing sunscreen, using barrier protection such as long sleeves and solid hats, and limiting your exposure to UV rays to protect against melanoma. But, also make sure to keep an eye on your skin, noting any changes to moles, freckles and other marks. Note any abnormalities and ask your physician for a skin exam as part of your annual physical. Colorectal Cancer “Most patients are familiar with a colon cancer screening,” Patterson said, “but some of my patients have not been aware that you need to start those screenings at age forty-five rather than fifty.” According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancers are the third leading cause of cancer death in men. Routine annual testing is one of the most effective ways of preventing colon and rectal cancer. In addition, screening can help doctors detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous. Prostate Cancer According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting American men after skin cancer and most commonly affects older men. “But prostate cancer is a very treatable, curable disease if detected early,” Patterson said. Your doctor can perform several screenings to look for possible signs of prostate cancer, 22 | SUMMER 2022

including a digital/rectal exam. Still, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is the most common. If these screenings point to cancer, your healthcare provider may perform a biopsy to confirm. While the exams can seem similar, Patterson cautioned patients not to confuse prostate exams with colonoscopies. “Some of my patients conflate colonoscopies and prostate exams,” he said. “Even if you have had a colonoscopy, you still need to consider a prostate cancer screening.” Calcium Score A calcium-score screening heart test detects calcium deposits in the coronary arteries, which can restrict blood flow to the muscles of your heart. The scan often helps to identify possible heart disease before you develop symptoms. “People can have heart disease and not know it,” Patterson said. “This scan allows doctors to see the calcium in your arteries, even if you do not have symptoms. It has helped detect heart disease in highly trained professional athletes who probably would not have been picked up otherwise.” Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. “Sleep apnea is more than just snoring,” Patterson said. “Because the body is deprived of oxygen, sleep apnea can contribute to heart failure, weight gain, diabetes and more. It is more serious than most people think.” If you snore loudly, gasp during sleep or notice extreme daytime tiredness, even after a full night’s sleep, you may want to talk with your physician about a sleep study. While blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol screenings should already be a regular part of your annual check-up, you might consider talking with your doctor about all these additional screenings to ensure optimum overall health. Ready to schedule your screenings? To find a physician, visit Williamson Medical Group at williamsonmedicalcenter.org.

Fashionable YOU

A Gentleman of Southern Fashion CRITTENDEN RAWLINGS: WEAR SOMETHING WORTH IT BY JOHNNY BIRDSONG

I live every day believing that nothing happens in my life by accident. I met Mr. Crittenden Rawlings a few years ago, totally by chance, while visiting and writing an article on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. One day, an article popped up on my phone about him, entitled “Dressing the Coach,” referring to John Calipari, world renowned basketball coach at the University of Kentucky. I called Critt up and said I was going to be in the area and would love to meet him while there. The moment I walked into this extraordinary gentlemen’s clothing store in small Midway, Kentucky, I felt something special. Being a man who loves his clothes, I instantly knew I was leaving there with something, and of course, I did. But, I left with much more than a new sport coat – I left in awe of the gentleman I had the opportunity to share some time with. A gentleman that I came to know, admire and I am proud to have called my friend. I got a call last week letting me know that Critt had passed away. That was a tough one to hear. I had only just started my friendship with him, such a short time ago and now he is gone. But, his impact on both myself and the gentleman’s clothing industry, will never be gone. I thought it only fitting that we include this marvelous man and his story in this, our annual gentlemen’s issue. Crittenden “Critt” Rawlings was a sixty-year veteran of the men’s tailored clothing business, working with and serving as the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of well-known companies like Polo/Ralph Lauren, Norman Hilton, Cricketeer and Oxxford Clothes. Critt led the sales and creative teams at these prominent companies in the fashion and menswear industries in New York and throughout the United States. His passion for quality, eye for timeless style, and “encyclopedic knowledge of fine fabrics,” was truly unmatched and a “trademark” of his business. At the age of eighty-two, Critt left us with quite the story to tell. Crittenden Clothing was founded in 2001 after Critt attempted to retire to his horse farm in Kentucky, but found it hard to stay away from the world of fabric and design. Critt realized he did not want to rest until he found success in a personalized line of welldesigned, well-made, well-priced tailored clothing. With his true passion for fabrics, design and the men’s clothing business, the Crittenden Rawlings clothing line originated. This line, and Critt;s philosophy on clothing described here: “Quality clothing that lasts for seasons is a modern, sustainable way to dress; American design, European craftsmanship, and excellence in quality in every detail; Bespoke features at a great price for work, for leisure, for sport, for celebrations. Crittenden Rawlings for a modern gentleman’s life.” SLOW FASHION When Critt founded Crittenden Clothing, he brought insider knowledge, great taste and hallmarks of his storied career to a small, artisanal company, making a product designed thoughtfully,

with respect and love for the great traditions of men’s tailored clothing. He preserved the traditions and history of the industry–the charming woolen mills of the United Kingdom, the silks and cotton of Italy and the many family-run businesses that still existed in the fashion industry, yet were beginning to struggle in the age of “fast fashion.” Critt worked with friends who were traditional tailors and true artisans worldwide and began to make his garments with the utmost care and attention to detail while supporting small businesses the world over.

and decades of relationships with European mills, tailoring professionals and manufacturers.

In addition to bringing “slow fashion” to the market and re-introducing the old-fashioned value of “slow clothing,” Critt saw that his brand could provide what other luxury brands lacked: Excellent quality for a great value. As a result, he filled a hole in the marketplace for the American man by providing a luxury product at a price point that made and continues to make dressing well accessible and available to more men.

Critt’s daughter, Allyson Rawlings tells us: “My dad delivered many speeches and talks to the fashion world over the years and liked to start with his story of growing up on a farm in Lebanon, Kentucky, with an outhouse. Recently, during his illness, my family began gathering information for an obituary and my dad jokingly said he’d title it ‘From the Outhouse to the White House’.” Critt felt this was fitting since he clothed Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush as well as many celebrities and personalities – very different from his quaint upbringing!

EXCELLENCE IN QUALITY, EXCELLENCE IN VALUE The Crittenden Rawlings Line offers classic but creative tailored clothing that is made with attention to every detail: Piped seams, working buttonholes, authentic French facing, unique and luxurious fabrics and more. What sets Crittenden Rawlings suits, sports coats and trousers apart is the use of the same luxury fabrics, details and features commonly found with suits and sports coats retailing for thousands of dollars. The Crittenden Rawlings line brings beautiful garments to the market at a more attractive price through the legacy of Critt’s experience, impeccable taste

THE SOFT COAT One of Critt’s first designs for the Crittenden Rawlings line was the unstructured “soft” sport coat– A soft-shouldered, lightly constructed coat that was a modern revolution for menswear and was immediately copied industry-wide and became the standard for a modern jacket.

Critt’s life was what most would call the ultimate twentieth-century American success story. A Kentucky farm boy to CEO. A small-town kid to an exceptional corporate and entrepreneurial success. A legend and leader in his industry. I feel privileged to have known Crittenden, albeit for a short time and its so humbling to be able to honor him in this issue as the epitome of a gentleman of southern fashion.

Gentlemen of Distinction

PC PATRICK CASSIDY

30 | SUMMER 2022

Each Summer, we curate a group of men who embody what defines a southern gentleman. This year’s Gentlemen of Distinction features eleven such gentlemen, who exemplify integrity, leadership, character and unwavering dedication to this community. Each one has profoundly impacted Williamson County in ways big and small. But each, has left their mark. We are honored to share just a piece of their stories. We dedicate this issue to Brant Bousquet, a man of generosity and diligence, and Coach Gentry, the true legend of Williamson County. Here’s to the 2022 Gentlemen of Distinction.

Patrick Cassidy is the Artistic Director at Studio Tenn Theatre Company. This career opportunity, along with other factors, led the California native to make the cross-country move to Franklin in November of 2019 along with his wife, Melissa. As an Artistic Director, Patrick is planning one season while producing another. His role includes hiring designers, directors, choreographers, musical directors and casting actors, as well as directing himself or even performing at times. Patrick was born into show business, spending most of his adult life working as an actor in film and television. However, he is known for his roles in musical theatre, specifically on Broadway. Patrick’s career has inspired him to share his many years in the theater with this community. “Theater gave me an outlet, passion and career that allowed me to travel the world, meet people of all nationalities and tell stories that have made and continue to make a difference in people’s lives,” he says. His goal is that our community will be able to experience professional theater at the highest level. Patrick reveals that the people of Williamson County are what makes this community special. He admits: “Honestly, everyone in California told me how nice southerners were… the friends I have made here are better people than I have ever known.” Crazy enough, Patrick had never been to Tennessee before moving here. He says: “I drove my son out to Nashville after he had gotten a record and publishing deal. When I visited Franklin, I thought I would love to live here and my wife felt the same. A year later, we moved.” Patrick’s favorite pastime is being active with family and friends. Whether kayaking down the Harpeth River, going for walks or riding bikes, Patrick loves the south and learning Franklin’s history. When asked what it means to be a gentleman, Patrick replied: “Oh Gosh! It means that my mother did a good job. She taught me about integrity and character. She was a rock foundation of love and support. She instilled these qualities in me, which I guess makes me a gentleman!” What advice would Patrick share with younger men? “To be present and enjoy each day. Always see the glass half full. Perception will always lead to gratitude if you let it.”

CG CARMINE GRASSI

Business

Carmine Grassi is the owner of Ford Lincoln of Franklin and Infiniti of Cool Springs who employ more than 200 people in our community. “My businesses are operated the good ole fashion way: Family-owned and operated. I have a passion for leading a team. I teach, mentor and train by using my total of thirty-six years of experience in the automotive business,” he says. Carmine’s successful career began through a connection that brought him into the business, but he had a different start than most. Carmine reveals: “In the spirit of transparency, I left school in the 10th grade. I have always wanted to overcome the negative stigma that came with that.” Carmine found a niche in the automotive industry and worked tirelessly to become successful. He had little experience, other than at one time selling suits, but knew he could sell. He relied on his instincts with no formal training or education. Carmine says: “Now, being able to mentor and give guidance is one of the most rewarding accomplishments I have!” Carmine’s passion for the automotive industry energizes him to be better, work harder and do more. “Each employee and customer inspire me. I feel most rewarded seeing the successes of my employees and satisfaction of my customers, and that continues to push me each day.” Carmine believes a gentleman is a transparent community ambassador and a role model to all. He has been married for twenty-six ‘wonderful’ years to his wife Jolane and has three daughters, Jessica, Alexis and Rachael. Together, they love spending time with their Bernedoodle puppy, Bruno, and three grandchildren, eating locally and appreciating Williamson County’s history. Carmine would like to remind his younger self and our readers to “continue to work hard and maintain the passion you have inside of you.”

JC

JIM CHAPMAN

Jim Chapman is the Art Teacher and Head Varsity Swim Coach at Brentwood Academy (BA). Before his career at BA, Jim spent several years in country music as an artist with the group 4Runner, as a background singer with Loretta Lynn and as a studio background vocalist for many artists. In addition, he is a Dove award-winning songwriter and a professional artist specializing in painting and pottery. “Everything I do, whether coaching, teaching, singing or painting a wedding, I am mindful that I represent Jesus and the BA community.” Jim strives to weave all his worlds together and particularly notes that it is “a pleasure, joy and an honor to teach at BA,” just one of many places he has poured his talents and heart into. Jim and his wife of thirty-six years, Yolanda, have eight kids. Their family began with four biological children: Jordan, Canaan, Bethany and Abigail. Then, after eight years, they adopted four more daughters from China: Isabelle, Lydia, Jayne and Fahlin, two of whom are walking miracles. Jim says: “I tell my wife all the time, and she still does not believe me, even after all these years…she inspires me to be better, to be the best husband, to stay in shape, to work hard to provide (thus the many irons in many fires), and to be the best dad.” The Chapman last name may ring a bell when learning that Jim’s sister, Mary Beth, is married to CCM recording artist and fellow Williamson County resident Steven Curtis Chapman, solidifying the overflowing talent in this family!

Education

When asked what it means to be a gentleman, Jim jokes; “well, I still open doors for ladies, does that count?” But, he admits: “As I have gotten older, I think it is important to care about others and empathize with people who are all going through something. I am trying to be interested, not interesting.” Jim would like to remind others to “get where you are going sooner and live by the fruits of the spirit.”

Financial

TP TIM PAGLIARA

Tim Pagliara is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of CapWealth. Though Tim was not raised here, Williamson County has become home. Tim explains: “There is a sense of family in the community that other cities cannot claim. So, it is never surprising when Williamson County ranks as a top place to live.” In addition, he notes: “Local leadership has consistently preserved the culture and heritage as a historically significant town that embodies all the qualities that make it a great place to live and work.” Thus, it only made sense to create the CapWealth headquarters in Franklin. Tim grew up in a middle-class family outside the “big city” of St. Louis. His upbringing ingrained the importance of a good education, and as he began to consider careers, one thing was evident– “lawyers ran the world.” This led to Tim becoming a Juris Doctorate candidate at the St. Louis University School of Law while also taking an entry-level position at a local Edward Jones financial firm. Tim explains: “As I juggled both school and work, I was assigned an account of a very well-known MLB Cardinals pitcher. As I began reviewing his portfolios, I uncovered discrepancies that even a seasoned advisor might have overlooked. This catch set me on a life-long path, where my Juris Doctorate became helpful to my career, but not in the courtroom.” Tim worked his way up through the firm and was charged with opening the first Edward Jones office in Nashville. In early 2000, after nearly twenty years of experience in the industry, he formed CapWealth. “Since opening our doors, we have successfully worked through the financial bubble, the housing market crash and a global pandemic,” he says. CapWealth has grown to sixteen employees and was recognized as a top advisory firm in the state and the country by Forbes and Barron’s. Tim says that his most significant accomplishment is climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro twelve times! “The accomplishment was not because of the hike but more because of the lesson it taught me...and the similarities of overcoming adversities in life,” he says. Tim explains that being a southern gentleman “is all about character, which derives from one’s values. I live by the same values in my business as I do in my personal life–integrity, transparency and generosity. A gentleman always aspires to be better and is aware of his blessings.”

ES ED SILVA

Ed Silva is a Managing Member at Hartzog & Silva, PLLC and has been a practicing, licensed trial attorney since 1974. His primary role as a lawyer is to be an advisor and advocate, assisting clients in navigating the sometimes troubled waters of the legal system. Ed says, “I believe it is incumbent on me to mentor young attorneys to ensure our local bar members continue to exhibit and foster the high standard of ethics and professionalism.” Ed has served as past President of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County and Carnton Plantation. In addition, he was a Founding Director of the Downtown Franklin Association, Chairman of the downtown Franklin Streetscape project and was named Franklin’s Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club. Ed has been recognized by “Best Lawyers of America” and “Mid-South Super Lawyers,” each year since 2006 and was selected “Best Lawyer’s Nashville Area - Lawyer of the Year,” in Family Law in 2010, 2017 and 2020.

Law

Ed’s inspiration to work harder and enjoy the fruits of that labor is a direct consequence of his early upbringing in a family with an unparalleled work ethic. “We were a middleclass, blue-collar family that fully appreciated and utterly enjoyed all we had, albeit a simple and basic lifestyle,” he says. If he could give his younger self advice, he would remind himself to “separate things within my control from those that are not and always give my best efforts no matter how simple or difficult the task.”

34 | SUMMER 2022

Ed has lived in Franklin since 1976. Ed and his wife, Suzanne, a published writer, have a daughter who is an Associate Law Professor and a son that is a filmmaker. Ed appreciates that Williamson County offers its residents a unique, suburban lifestyle in a community rich with history, beautiful landscapes, a highly rated public school system and effective local governance. Other than his work, Ed’s main interests are reading crime novels and sports. He played recreational polo for twenty-five years and still enjoys a round of golf, at least his “own version of the game,” and pond fishing with his son.

Medical

AR ANDY RUSSELL

Dr. Andy Russell is an Emergency Room Physician and the Chief Medical Officer at Williamson Medical Center (WMC). He has lived and worked in Williamson County since 2004, along with his wife of twenty-five years, Nancy, and their two daughters. Andy was born and raised in Memphis and attended Rhodes College, followed by medical school at East Tennessee State University College of Medicine and an Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Kentucky. Andy says: “My first shift in the Emergency Department (ED) at WMC began with a bang on July 4th, 2004.” He has worked in the ED since and has served as the Chief Medical Officer at WMC since 2019. “I became interested in hospital administration as my ED career progressed. While I love making a difference for the twenty or so patients I see every day or night shift, I also enjoy making a difference on a system-wide level, helping to oversee the quality care provided by the staff at WMC to our patients.”

When asked what a gentleman is, Andy replies: “Being a gentleman is all about treating people the way you want to be treated. Show respect and compassion to everyone. Listen more than you talk. Be a humble observer but be assertive when necessary. A firm handshake, a smile and a direct look in the eye are always important. Take care of yourself and your appearance– if you don’t take care of yourself, how can you be expected to take care of anyone else?” Andy is motivated to be better because he wants to be an example for his daughters by showing them that you can accomplish anything with sacrifice and hard work. He spends a lot of time on the soccer fields as both daughters have been avid soccer players with Tennessee Soccer Club. Andy also enjoys bike rides, time on the golf course, attending church at Franklin First United Methodist and long training runs – he has completed a marathon in all fifty states!

RD RALPH DRURY

Philanthropist

Ralph Drury is the CEO of The Drury Group Insurance Company, a successful business that he started from the ground up, over forty-five years ago. “I have always been very proud to be a business owner in Williamson County and have worked very hard to establish a superb and honest partnership with our clients,” Ralph says. “Our business is built on hard work, and we feel that it is imperative to have local representation for our clients. We live here, play here and work here; we want to be known for our level of commitment,” says Ralph. Ralph has lived and worked in Williamson County since 1972, saying, “I am so happy that I knew the old Williamson County, the real movers and shakers, the characters, the hard-working people that made this county what it is today. I hope we slow down a bit and let Williamson County be the quaint little town it used to be.”

36 | SUMMER 2022

Ralph is an active community member through his philanthropic efforts. He tells how Mercy Children’s Clinic, now Mercy Community Healthcare Center, came to be. In 2000, Ralph was approached by Dr. Tim Henshel, who saw a need for health care for economically disadvantaged children in our community. Shortly after, A Vintage Affair, a wine charity event inspired by Ralph’s love for the California wine country, was founded, to fundraise for local women’s and children’s charities. Ralph’s family and community were always his inspiration to work harder, be better and do more. “At eighty-two and failing health, I am happy to just wake up in the morning,” he says. I am proud that YOUR Williamson even sees me as a Gentleman of Distinction. I must have done something right to be thought of in that way. Thank you.” Ralph believes a gentleman is one who “treats others with respect, displaying values of hard work and leadership… committing to higher standards, lending a helping hand and taking responsibility for your actions.” His life advice is to “take care of your health, drink the good wine now, laugh more, apologize when you know you are wrong…do not hold grudges, volunteer…do not stress the small stuff.”

Civil Servant

DS

DUSTYN STEVENS

Officer Dustyn Stevens has been a police officer with the Franklin Police Department for nearly four years. You may recognize his name from his recent heroic act of stopping a suspect and surviving being run over and dragged down Interstate 65 North. Dustyn reveals, “In my role as a police officer, I feel I contribute to keeping Franklin safe by providing professional police services with integrity, honor and courage. Also, I hold myself to high-performance standards, and I am dedicated to maintaining the trust of the community I serve.” Dustyn reveals his greatest work accomplishment was Chief Faulkner hiring him to work as a Franklin Police Officer. Dustyn notes that his most significant accomplishment in life, was marrying his best friend and “the most wonderful person he knows,” his wife, Holly. They live in Franklin with their chocolate lab, Coco and enjoy kayaking, fishing and hiking in Williamson County. Before having the honor of being a police officer, Dustyn coached baseball at Battle Ground Academy. Dustyn finds inspiration to be a better person and servant through his convictions as a Christian, husband and leader in the community. When asked what a gentleman is, Dustyn replied: “It’s staying true to your values, upholding your dignity and the dignity of those around you and respecting others.” He would like to remind our readers to “stay focused on your faith and be true to yourself and your friends.”

DA

DANNY ANDERSON

Real Estate

Danny Roy Anderson has been in real estate for thirty-nine years, ten of which have been with Parks Real Estate Company. Until two months ago, he was Managing Broker of Parks Franklin, a job Danny truly loved. “But, as I started reflecting on my life, my age and wanting to spend more time with family and friends, I decided that I needed to step down from the Managing Broker position,” he says. “I decided to just focus on listing and selling properties with my son Reid and it was the right decision.” If Danny could give any advice, it would be “to jump on the wagon and run with it. Do not be afraid to get involved. Your ideas and visions are important to the future of our county. Be yourself but respect others, as we do not all have the same opinion.” Danny has earned many professional accomplishments – such as that of former President of the Williamson County Board of Realtors, President of the Heritage Foundation, President of the Historic Carnton Board, Studio Tenn Board, Development Services Advisory Board for City of Franklin, Police Academy, a Heritage Foundation Patron’s Award recipient and most recently, he was appointed to the Williamson County Industrial Board. However, he says: “The thing I am most proud of is being a husband to Teresa, father to Reid and father in-law to Cameron.” Danny and Teresa moved to Franklin fortyseven years ago for the position of Public Relations Director at the former Carter’s Court shopping center, working with the wonderful Calvin and Marilyn Lehew. “That period of my life was one of my favorites, he says. “Calvin and Marilyn are still dear friends and mentors.” Shortly after, the Anderson’s opened The Bunganut Pig Restaurant with one of Danny’s best friends, Ed Silva, and eventually opened D-Roy’s Gift Shop on 4th Avenue. When asked what it means to be a gentleman, Danny says: “Well, my mother made sure I acted like a gentleman, and if I did not, I would hear about it in words or sometimes in action. I am old-fashioned, but being a gentleman is being courteous, polite, having good manners, treating people with respect, and, this is really old-fashioned, dressing well. Being a Gentleman is earned, not a thing that is given.” 38 | SUMMER 2022

BRANT BOUSQUET POSTHUMOUSLY

Brant Bousquet was a Franklin resident and a well-known advocate for affordable housing and racial reconciliation in the community. With over thirty years of experience in fundraising development, Brant began his life of service with Vanderbilt’s Campus Crusade for Christ’s ministry. Through that endeavor, he met Scott Roley, a pastor at Christ Community Church, who had the same passion for protecting the rights of the impoverished. Brant joined the Mount Hope Hard Bargain Association that Scott and the late Denny Denson developed to educate and advocate for those living in the historic Black community. Next, Brant transitioned into the Director of Development at Mercy Children’s Clinic (MCC), now Mercy Community Healthcare. His colleagues noted that Brant’s strong fundraising program was the foundation for what MCC has become. Most recently, Brant was the Capital Campaign Officer at Battle Ground Academy – his son’s alma mater. Brant’s wife Virginia writes: “He was an unusual blend of a people-person and an effective task-person. He was an advocate, a champion and a tireless worker for the causes that mattered to him–Franklin and beyond. He often canvassed door-to-door for political candidates he believed in. He had a gift for writing letters of recommendation, and he was much sought-after in that capacity.” She goes on to tell how Brant embraced

the human condition; “the highs and lows, the joys and sorrows, the imperfections and the incredible potential in every person.” Virginia says: “Brant was a southern gentleman, and he loved to dress like one– seersucker and all. He was polite, looked people in the eyes and cared for others. The advice Brant would give is to look at who or what is in front of you and do something positive. Reach out and work for the greater good. Do not live in a bubble. Find the local places and not just give money but give your time, presence, energy and your gifts – it is worth it.” “Brant loved to dance, sing, make wry comments, joke, pray, discuss, read, talk to a friend or, for that matter, a person he just met. He loved to nap on Sundays and walk around his neighborhood. He loved getting smoothies from the Juice Bar and eating breakfast at McCreary’s Pub with his friends. He read the newspaper’s print version every day,” Virginia writes. Brant was a great friend, wonderful husband, compassionate dad and fierce Christ-follower who is missed by many people in Williamson County and worldwide. Brant passed away at fifty-six this past March of 2022, leaving behind a legacy of service and humanity on Williamson County. YOURWILLIAMSON.COM | 39

IN HONOR OF COACH GENTRY’S RECENT PASSING, WE RERUN OUR 2021 PROFILE OF THIS TRULY GREAT EXAMPLE OF A SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN

JG JIMMY GENTRY IN LOVING MEMORY 40 | SUMMER 2022

Jimmy Gentry was a soldier, teacher and coach who lived in Franklin his entire life. Born in 1925, he was one of eight children that grew up in a working-class family during the depression. After high school graduation, he left for the European Theatre of World War II and he returned home a changed man. He was awarded two bronze stars for his actions during the invasion of Germany and was among the first Allied troops to enter Dachau, the infamous Nazi death camp. You can read more about his time in the war and his transition back into home life in his book An American Life. Shortly after his return, Jimmy married his high school sweetheart, Rebecca Channell, and they had three sons. The family lived in downtown Franklin initially, then on Murfreesboro Road and eventually moved to Rebecca’s family farm in the mid-1970s. Jimmy lived on the farm until his passing with both of his sons and their wives. He had five grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Jimmy decided to further his education at Tennessee Tech University but he later transferred to Peabody College to be able to coach football at his alma mater Franklin High School because he “thought that sounded like something I would like to do.” He continued coaching into his eighties. While in college, he majored in education, and one of his most significant accomplishments was shaping and molding students in Williamson County to become contributing citizens. Jimmy has mentored and challenged local young men and women throughout his career as a teacher and coach. Many of his students have gone on to prominent positions locally and nationally. He has always been a hard worker and has always advocated for others to do the same. The thing that inspired Jimmy to work harder, be better and do more was at the age of twelve when he lost his father and had to start providing for the children who were left at home. He helped contribute to the family through

hunting, fishing and trapping with his brothers. If he could give any advice to his younger self, he says: “I might suggest that he consider those who have been through a lot of life before him. That they know things he does not and to always listen well to your elders. I’d say to always consider your physical body as something God gave you and to take care of. I took care of myself by not smoking or drinking, while everyone else around me was. I have tried to eat well, go to bed early and keep a positive outlook on life. I would also say to always keep looking around you. Everything you see in nature and people was created by God. He made it all and He deserves the credit.” When asked what makes Williamson County special to him, he responded: “Well, that is hard to answer because there is so much special about Williamson County. Just look around at the terrain and all the hills and valleys. It is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, besides Austria. Another thing is that we are so close to the big city of Nashville for commerce, and yet still out here in the country. Also, all of the history here is very interesting. Lastly, the people of Williamson County have traditionally been very warm, Christian, friendly people.” Here at YW, we cannot forget the reason Jimmy is on this list once again. When Coach Gentry was asked what he thinks it means to be a gentleman he responded: “Well, being a gentleman, you have the feeling that you are not just a human being, you are a gentleman. I think mostly it means having respect for those around you. You can talk to someone for just a few minutes and know if they are a gentleman, by the words they use and how they present themselves. Please, thank you, sir and ma’am lets you know they were raised right and to be respectful of others. Opening the door for women? Well, you should not even have to think about that. All these things are a part of being a gentleman.”

Huckleberry Brewing Company FAMILY FRIENDLY FULL KITCHEN & BAR

Huckleberry Brewing Company began with two Cub Scout dads who wanted to add a familyfriendly brewery and eatery to the community. The co-owners wanted to create a place to spend more time with their families since their other business is in downtown Nashville. Cool Springs offered the ideal setting for a new restaurant and brewery close to their home bases. Thus, Huckleberry Brewing Company was formed. Mat Lumm, Huckleberry Brewing Company’s brewmaster, began homebrewing while working for Breakwater Brewing in Oceanside, California. “I eventually joined the brewing team after pestering the head brewer for a better part of a year with a plethora of questions,” says Mat. “He saw the passion and the potential in me and considered me as an assistant brewer. We won Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup medals for several beers…truly a great experience. After several years, I went to Stone Brewing in Escondido and worked my way up

from the bottom, eventually learning every side of the brewing production operations; cellar, centrifuge and brewhouse. In the last couple of years, I have relocated to Nashville and worked at Southern Grist Brewing and Tailgate Brewery. There was an opportunity for me to be the head brewer of a small brewpub, and I knew I’d kick myself down the road if I did not give it a shot; as a brewer, I have never been the #1 at the top, the highest I had gone was #2, so I knew this was the next step for me to grow in my profession.” Mat’s brewing began at Huckleberry and now they currently have four of their original beers – Amber, Wheat, IPA and Lager – and will soon have five. “We initially picked a good spread of highly sought-after styles that are all balanced approachable examples that should please everyone from your craft beer snob to a craft beer novice,” he says. “Going forward, we will still maintain that goal of approachable beers; however, occasionally, we throw some curve balls into the mix. We also feature guest

taps who will all be predominantly local to Tennessee. We like to support our local beer companies because there is plenty of room for everyone to shine.” Regarding the warmer months, Mat says you do not need to change up your beer options. “There is an unfortunate stigma about beer; heavy high gravity dark beers should be consumed in colder months, and light low gravity beers are best for the hot months. Break those chains and do yourself a favor by not limiting yourself as a consumer because beer is too good, and life is too short for that.” So, if you are searching for a new brew to refresh you on a hot day or a new place to enjoy with family and friends, visit Huckleberry Brewing Company. You will find tasty food choices, select beers and a full bar, as well as large screens to watch all the sports, a game room for the kids and a relaxed atmosphere... And you are sure to find yourself a “huckleberry friend” while there.

Raising By Raising A Glass NASHVILLE WINE AUCTION Nashville Wine Auction’s mission is to unite the wine community to fund the fight against cancer. The nonprofit hosts three main largescale fundraising events annually, with smaller supporting events throughout the year. The 43rd Annual l’Eté du Vin will be held July 21st23rd. The new Music City Harvest Party will be held on October 14th, an inaugural outdoor event featuring some amazing wines from South America. Pairings: Nashville’s Ultimate Wine and Food Weekend will be February 23rd25th. Established in 1980, the Nashville Wine Auction has raised more than thirty million for organizations whose purpose is directly related to cutting-edge research, innovative treatment as well as family and caregiver support. Brian Junghans, Board Chairman of the Nashville Wine Auction and Williamson County 44 | SUMMER 2022

resident, has been involved with the organization for several years. “In early 2014, my wife, Kristen, and I built a wine cellar. Kristen was hosting a group of friends for a birthday party, and one of the guests noticed the cellar and invited her to a Nashville Wine Auction event,” Brian explains. “We were quickly hooked by the events’ quality, the group’s friendliness and how much fun we had. In addition to attending parties, we started volunteering at events and hosting dinners at our home. We got to know the organization more deeply, and the cause behind the fun became a focal point for our involvement. Both of us have lost grandparents to cancer, so anything we can do to help patients and families in need directly, groups that support patients and families going through a cancer journey and research organizations working to find a cure - we are in!”

The Nashville Wine Auction supports nine organizations directly related to cancer research, innovative patient treatment and caregiver and patient support. “Each year, organizations that meet those parameters submit grant applications by December 31st. Those applications are reviewed by the Nashville Wine Auction Grant Committee, who evaluates the applications based on the specific projects sought to be funded, the amounts requested and the measure of impact,” says Brian. “The Grant Committee provides a proposed list of beneficiaries to be approved by the Nashville Wine Auction Board of Directors for the following year, and then funds to support those beneficiaries are awarded at the end of each year after our fundraising events have taken place.”

615.395.0102 | arringtonvineyards.com “One success story that shows our impact involves our beneficiary Ascension Saint Thomas who runs the Our Mission in Motion (OMIM). OMIM is a mobile unit that provides 3D Tomography in Middle Tennessee. OMIM offers screening mammograms and breast health education programs to more than 3,000 disadvantaged, under-served and uninsured women annually. With the help of a grant from Nashville Wine Auction, OMIM was able to launch a second mobile unit to double their outreach to increase early detection, prevention and ultimately save lives,” he says. Brian says that one common phrase they hear among their donors and patrons is, “We came for the wine, but we stayed for the cause.” He also says that Nashville Wine Auction curates amazing events and experiences. They also foster relationships within the hospitality, wine making and food-loving community –there is something for everyone at their events. “Whether you are just learning about wine or you are a seasoned collector, there is a way for you to become involved. Our beneficiaries tell us the positive impact our donations have made on their organizations for over forty years. And our donations would not be possible without the incredible support of our wine-loving community.” The Nashville Wine Auction continues to break its own fundraising goals and records, demonstrating that Nashville’s wine community loves wine and hates cancer! Millions of dollars have been raised for local nonprofit cancer-related organizations. This year’s beneficiaries are American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, Ascension Saint Thomas Foundation, Gilda’s Club Middle Tennessee, HopeKids, Inc., Leukemia Lymphoma Society, MakeA-Wish Foundation® of Middle Tennessee, PearlPoint Nutrition Services, Survivor Fitness Foundation, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Gentleman Entertains

Hosting a Summer Soiree WITH HUGH HOWSER Lord, it is hot! As summer rolls in, we begin to take long looks at our yards and think, how on Earth did I let this happen!? The overwhelming heat of the summer does not help either, especially when entertaining! We all experience party panic! Frantically searching garden centers for the perfect shade of pale pink (after landscapers turn you down), or you realize you are having friends over for a dinner al fresco–or the absolute worst is when your holly shrubs will look worse than your humidity perm that night! Here are a few ways to stay COOL and calm this year!

Make sure you have more fans than you need! Insects pose huge issues during the summer; fans help. There is nothing worse than swatting all night. You will notice more people asking to use the restroom, then, somehow, they never return and gather in the kitchen for the rest of the night!

Offer guests cool towels in ice chests if needed! These can be doused in lavender to add a refreshing touch for the hot season.

Parting gift! Leave guests something cool and refreshing for the ride home! For example, cute signage could read: “Don’t drink and drive...refresh and drive.”

Make this summer fun and stress-free by having a COOL and comfortable gathering! Guests will never leave!

A Southern Gentleman Chases

G R E AT N E S S HOW MICHAEL OHER CHASES GREATNESS TO INSPIRE OTHERS WITH INTRODUCTION FROM KEVIN HERRINGTON, LINEAGE BANK

It is an absolute honor to introduce Michael Oher as this month’s A Southern Gentleman Is... feature gentleman. Michael is the epitome of a Southern Gentleman and is not only a valued friend to Lineage Bank but also our community. Of course, many of us know of Michael’s college and professional football accomplishments, but that is not what defines his character. His off-the-field accomplishments of giving back to the disadvantaged youth in the Greater Nashville area through education, is just one example

of his willingness to support the people in this community. So, without further ado, please enjoy this month’s Southern Gentleman, Mr. Michael Oher. - Kevin Harrington For those who may not immediately recognize the name, Michael Oher is a former National Football League offensive tackle, playing for eight seasons on three teams; the Baltimore

Ravens, Tennessee Titans (Go Titans!) and Carolina Panthers. You may also recognize his name from the Academy Award filing film, based on his life story, The Blind Side. But as we learned both upon first having the privilege to meet Michael and during our interview at his home, there is more to the man than meets the eye. Enjoy this feature interview with one of Williamson County’s coolest southern gentlemen!

Why did you choose Williamson County as your home? What are some of the things you love most about WC? My roots have always been tied to the city of Nashville ever since I was a kid. Nashville, in particular, was the first city I visited outside of Memphis. We used to play all our championship games here, whether basketball, football or track and field. Then once the NFL Draft approached, I did all my training here. Eventually, I would return to this city to play for the Titans in my sixth year in the NFL. It was then that I decided I wanted this city to be my home.

How did you get started in football? Did you always have a love for the sport? I got started in football at a very early age by playing around in the neighborhood with the other kids. I grew up a big Dallas Cowboys fan ever since I could remember. Being a fan and having a team that you could say you were a part of was very special for me – that is one of the biggest reasons I clung to the sport. Football gave me a family atmosphere where being held accountable and the idea of setting goals and accomplishing them were fostered. These attributes only contributed to taking me further to where I wanted to be in life.

Today, Nashville has grown into a powerhouse, which is why I love the specific charm reserved in Williamson County. It has maintained its southern roots and culture that I was so used to growing up. Even though nearly a quarter of a million people are here, it still maintains that small-town feel. The comradery of feeling like you know everyone can be attributed to all its residents’ friendly southern disposition.

I also knew that sports were a way that someone like me could make it to college. Even as a kid, education was important to me. It was the key to success, and football was my way of getting there.

Of course, if I am being honest, the number one reason Williamson County has earned its title as the home of Michael Oher is the food. I am so pleased to know that it has grown into a ‘foodie town’ because cuisine is the one creature comfort I cannot live without. My early life made me appreciate the blessing of a good meal, and that is something you don’t lack in a place like Williamson County. 48 | SUMMER 2022

What motivates you? My biggest motivator is the one principle that I have adopted ever since I was a kid on the streets of Memphis. That principal is trying to become the best version of myself every single day – mentally, physically and spiritually. I wake up each day wanting to be a role model for others. My hope is that if anyone else were to look at me, they would say, ‘That’s it. That’s the blueprint I want to follow for my own life.’

The only way I know how to do that is by creating the best version of myself each day. You will watch yourself become better and better over time if you do that consistently. What advice would you give a young you or today’s younger generation to help them reach their potential and be the best they can be? The advice I would give to the young generation of today would be this: 1. Enjoy the process, and do not try to rush life. When you enjoy each day, you are building a masterpiece. 2. Take the time to perfect your craft. 3. Find and take opportunities presented to you daily. 4. Do not get caught up in the difficulty of a situation; instead, find the good in it. 5. Opportunities are everywhere – Make the most of them. 6. Be thankful. Do not complain.

What does that mean? Greatness is the highest value you can achieve compared to the alternative. So, greatness can change depending on what a culture or society values. For example, in the south, society values kindness, compassion, authenticity and integrity. This is seen day to day in the small gestures of holding the door for someone, smiling or doing a good deed for someone. That is the ideal gentleman to me - someone who can show kindness to others on a daily basis because that is who they have chosen to be at the core of their character.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM SANNER

What do you think it means to be a Southern Gentleman? A key requirement of a gentleman is to be someone who has built themselves in greatness. That does not mean you have to be rich or famous, but it does mean that you have to chase greatness daily.

YOURWILLIAMSON.COM | 49

Of course, to be deemed a Southern Gentleman that chases for greatness, you must embody these values. If we can raise this next generation to value these qualities, we can ensure that the Southern Gentleman is not lost to time. That is what I believe this world needs more than anything right now–men who embody the kind spirit and character of a Southern Gentleman. Kindness through strength has the best chance of changing a community for the better. When you were young, who did you want to be or be like when you grew up? Who are your most significant role models? My biggest role model was Michael Jordan. His energy, the way he carried himself with class, and that when he would talk, he knew exactly who he wanted to be. He knew exactly what he wanted to say. He got his points across. Whenever he was doing an interview, he had those gentlemanly qualities. He spoke well. Those were the attributes I liked and enjoyed about him. As we know, Michael Jordan was a basketball player. So, without him, I would not have gone down the path I did with sports.

What are your favorite pastimes? My favorite thing to do when I am not giving back is spending time with my family. My most cherished moments are going to the baseball fields and attending basketball games to watch my kids play. Tell us about your philanthropic endeavors in this community. Why do you feel it is essential to give back? Right now, I am working on getting my foundation, the Oher Foundation, up and running. Through it, I hope to make access to higher education a possible reality for kids who are just like me. Growing up, I did not initially have the opportunities or resources to improve my academic standing. When you do not have a stable home life, experience poverty and live in an underfunded district, excelling academically to pursue higher education seems impossible. Unfortunately, homework takes a back seat to survival for the kids facing starvation and sleeping on the street. I want to have a hand in championing the kids experiencing these adversities. I want to make sure they have the same opportunity I had to earn their way to a better education without being bogged down with the stress and hopelessness of poverty. In short, I want to provide that path for kids starving for success to escape the cycle of despair by giving them an option to pursue higher education. When given a platform as I have, you are responsible for using it and giving back to the world. That is why I am using the Oher Foundation as a platform to give kids like me the same chance I had. I hope to ensure stories like mine are no longer a miracle but rather a reality we can come to expect for our future generations. How has The Blind Side movie impacted your life? Do you feel it portrayed you and your life and achievements accurately? The Blind Side gave me a great platform. More than anything, it helped raise eyebrows for so many other kids to have the opportunity to be adopted. If someone did not get a chance before, the story might have provided that one. Although, the movie portrayed some of the hardships I had to face accurately, it did not depict the amount of effort required of me to get where I am today. Anything else you would like for our readers to know? Never think you are done. You can always get to greater heights. There are a million things you can be great at. No matter how many doors may close in your face, there will always be another opportunity on the horizon. Look for those, and when they present themselves, take them. Everyone, no matter the circumstances, can chase greatness and inspire others. You are never too old to continue your story. Until your book closes in life, there is always room for you to write your best chapter yet.

Thank you, Michael, for helping make Williamson County a wonderful place to live for all of our community.

BUILDING A LUXURY HOME SHOULD BE A LUXURY EXPERIENCE I would classify working with the Legend Homes team, from our initial concept meeting to completion, as my most seamless build. This is my seventh luxury home build experience and my favorite home to date. When dealing with hurdles brought on by the pandemic, the Legend group of professionals were always prepared to shift to ensure my dream home would be to my specifications — quite the feat when dealing with a noted perfectionist like myself who has high standards and discerning taste. Since my first visit to a Legend Parade home years ago, I knew we would work together in the future. I don’t believe there is much that could top this well-thoughtout concept of a one-level living home and my great experience with Legend Homes. COMMUNITY

Days Gone By BY KATIE SHANDS

An entire community is mourning the loss of William Robert “Bob” Canaday, Jr., a beloved photographer who made it his personal mission to preserve Franklin’s past by collecting and archiving the area’s historic pictures. After forty-seven years of making an indelible mark on Williamson County, he peacefully passed away in April. Bob and his wife, Jackie, moved to Franklin in 1974 from Miami, where he had established himself as a successful medical researcher. Forever self-effacing, Bob never spoke about this part of his past. Still, he was instrumental in developing the heart-lung bypass machine and actively participated in the first kidney transplant. It was highly unusual to work on both the harvest and transplant teams, but Bob was more than qualified. “He truly was a visionary. I always marveled at his intuitiveness,” Jackie says. After the Canadays’ arrived in Franklin, Vanderbilt University Medical Center offered Bob a position, but he had his sights set on a different career path: Photography. He had an uncanny ability to attract people into his orbit and soon connected with Togue Uchida, the premier photographer in Nashville during that time. Togue became his lifelong mentor and friend. For two years, Bob operated a color lab out of his house. He made prints for a local photographer, Marvin Lee Compton, Jr., and when Marvin died, Bob acquired all of his negatives. This was the beginning of Bob’s lifelong role as custodian of Franklin’s photographic history. He later purchased the entire pictorial library of Woody Dickerson, a Franklin photographer whose work spanned the late forties to the mid-sixties. Woody’s negatives were a priceless record of the town, and Bob recognized their historic value.

Bob Canaday HONORING THE LIFE OF BELOVED PHOTOGRAPHER & ARCHIVIST

56 | SUMMER 2022

In 1975, the Canadays’ set up shop on Franklin’s Main Street in the building where McCreary’s now operates. Jackie ran a bridal store on the first floor while Bob opened Canaday Photography upstairs. As it turned out, his studio provided the perfect opportunity to add to his growing archive. “People started bringing in pictures of their families,” Jackie says. “Bob would ask if they had any photos of Main Street or the surrounding area. Then, he’d copy the images for the archives and make the person a print as well.” After years of collecting photographs, disaster struck on March 2, 1981. Redmond’s Liquors on Main Street caught fire, and the blaze spread to the Canaday’s building two doors down. Jackie lost more than 100 wedding dresses, but Bob’s studio suffered the worst damage. The blaze obliterated his photography equipment and about 17,000 negatives from the Dickerson files. Despite this setback, Bob was not deterred. He started his archives anew, and eventually, the Canadays’ published the pictures in two

volumes titled Franklin: A Photographic Recollection. Bob contributed to other books, including Rick Warwick’s Franklin’s Public Square: A Pictorial History. After Bob’s death, Jackie gifted their photos to the Williamson County Historical Society. Bob is remembered as a talented photographer and dedicated archivist, but his connections with people stretched far beyond portraitists and subjects. “People were always at the house talking to him,” Jackie says.

“I’d think, ‘I can do that, too,’ but as I got older, I realized you can’t just do that. It’s a God-given gift.” May Bob’s life be a lesson to us all—an enviable body of work is certainly something to be proud of, but one’s true legacy lies in the people we have impacted along the way. Bob’s memory will live on through the kindness and love he showed to many. “We lost a great man,” Jackie says. “There was no one in his life he did not touch.”

Mission to Lead Revitalization and Purposeful Evolution THE DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN ASSOCIATION

BY HEIDI HOOD, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN ASSOCIATION

The Downtown Franklin Association (a division of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County), is gearing up for a productive summer! As a nationally accredited Main Street program, the Downtown Franklin Association’s mission is to lead the continued revitalization and purposeful evolution of downtown Franklin - in the context of historic preservation - by maintaining a diverse economic base, promoting a unique local shopping experience, fostering accessible and inviting public spaces, and forging partnerships across all sectors. DFA UNIVERSITY In support of the economic vitality downtown, the DFA hosted its first DFA University on May 10th at the Heritage Foundation headquarters on Bridge Street, with guest speaker Joni Cole, co-owner of Gray’s on Main. Joni shared educational content on “Creating Culture & Retaining Talent,” as an exclusive benefit to DFA membership. DFA University will continue to cover business-building points of interest for the business community downtown with additional workshop-style events in the final months of this year. DFA MASTERMINDS The DFA is excited to launch DFA Masterminds in June! This program benefits members of the organization, creating space for intentional,

solution-focused conversations that help various membership sectors, including nonprofits, retailers, restaurants, building owners and professional services. In addition, this program will provide yet another resource for economic vitality and development to businesses within a one-mile radius of the Public Square. SMART START™ This month, the DFA was proud to build a resource for local start-ups and growing businesses, collaborating with DFA members and community partners to create this resource built around the unique needs of building a business in downtown Franklin. Visit downtownfanklintn.com/ smartstart to view this live resource. FRANKLIN LOCALS May also brought recruits for DFA’s beloved hospitality program, Franklin Locals. Having hosted a successful spring season, the DFA is ready to launch a hopefully even larger team of volunteers to provide hospitality on the streets, answer questions and welcome new friends on Main Street. The organization would like to see this volunteer force double in size by the end of the fall season this year. For more information and to apply to join for the next season, visit downtownfanklintn.com/ franklinlocals. In the ever-changing landscape of Franklin, the DFA is working hard to ensure downtown remains one of America’s favorite historic districts.

When Ken Thwaits opened Franklin Road Apparel Company in September of 2017, his mission was to offer a quality men’s clothing store to the downtown Franklin neighborhood. The concept of Franklin Road Apparel came about when Ken was shopping on Main Street with his wife. He noticed the gap in retail options for men, and despite his lack of experience in clothing, he took a chance and went for it! Ken explains the reason behind the name: “Franklin Road is the main artery to travel from Franklin to Nashville, and it will be here for a long time. Just as the road will remain consistent, so will Franklin Road Apparel. We want our customers to know that when you visit our store year after year, we will provide you with the latest, greatest stuff!” Franklin Road has a wide array of men’s apparel but specializes in denim– salvage denim, high-end denim, to be exact! Franklin Road prides itself in offering new, cutting-edge designs. Ken says: “Our store is

unique and continuously evolving, so if you visited us last year or even last week, you would see all new merchandise today.” Ken gives credit to their fabulous Visual Merchandiser, Earl Smith. Ken admits: “It is overwhelming for me when I walk in because I have to hold myself back from buying stuff…it is a designer overload in the best way possible!” Franklin Road brings a tailored shopping experience to consumers while providing an atmosphere you will not see online or in a department store. They also have a women’s section, but unlike most retailers’ floor plans, you must walk through the men’s section first! So, whether you know exactly what you want or need assistance cultivating a completely new look, Franklin Road is here to serve you in their specially curated storefront in the former fire station. Visit them in Franklin at 508 West Main Street! Follow on Instagram @franklinroadapparel and visit their online store at franklinroad.com.

Get Out & Explore NASHVILLE’S BIG BACKYARD PART IV & V BY JOHNNY BIRDSONG

NBBY Part IV: Leiper’s Fork Nashville’s BIG BACK YARD truly begins in Leiper’s Fork. This little town is special, and I had the chance to spend a day discovering why. I started my morning with a Mama Byrd latte at the RedByrd Coffee Shop. The scenic drive and the coffee alone were worth the trip, but I was just getting started. I made my way inside Leiper’s Fork Market for breakfast with the locals. Here, you not only get a warm, southern welcome but throughout the store it is a virtual museum of the area’s history on the walls. The owner told me: “Not all of our locals can go to a museum, so we brought the museum to them.” To tell the story of Leiper’s Fork, I spoke with some of the folks that have been here the longest, to learn the history of this fascinating village. Aubrey Preston is a Nashville-area entrepreneur, avid preservationist and the Founder of Nashville’s Big Back Yard. Several months back I was meeting with Mr. Preston, and he started telling me about all the cool things we have to offer - right in our backyard! His excitement was contagious. I learned more about Nashville’s Big Back Yard and wanted to experience it for myself. Over the past few issues, we have had the opportunity to see for ourselves and pass along our adventures to you. It has been a fun ride. I thank Aubrey for what he and his team are doing and for letting us be a part of it. Now, back to my adventures. Aubrey came here to Leiper’s Fork in 1991 and started the “Back to the Land” movement to preserve land in 1995. “My goal was to transform our public schools and restore our village where most of the buildings were broken down and many unoccupied, to a place the community could enjoy. We have retooled our community to experience food, entertainment, home stores and art. We have a very vibrant little village versus the broken-down area that it was in 1995,” says Preston. Did you know that Leiper’s Fork has had three names? That’s right; Benton Town, Hillsboro and now Leiper’s Fork. There is an old saying about New York, New York: “The town is so nice they named it twice.” With this town, you could say: “It’s so nice they named it thrice!” Leiper’s Creek Gallery leiperscreekgallery.com After breakfast, I visited Leiper’s Creek Gallery and talked with Lisa Fox, the resident Artist and Owner. Lisa has been in Leiper’s 64 | SUMMER 2022

Fork for twenty-three years, twenty of those with the gallery. Lisa says: “I want to have a variety of representation work to abstract art. I currently have twenty-five artists; seventeen are local. It is strange to have an art gallery in the middle of nowhere, but this is top quality artwork and includes four master painters, artists from Venice Italy, and artists prominently known nationally and internationally. I think that is what is truly unique about this gallery.” When I asked Lisa her favorite thing about Leiper’s Fork, she replied: “That it’s colorful. The people. The mix of people… the locals, the farmers, the horse people, the celebrities. No one is treated any different from another.” Fox & Locke foxandlocke.com Founded in 1947 by Jack Fox and Martin Locke, the historic grocery has been in continuous operation for seventy-five years and counting. In the beginning years of Fox & Locke General Merchandise, folks would stop in for gas, groceries and snacks, but stay for the friendly banter and grapevine news. In 1960, the Puckett family bought and renamed the grocery and the store continued to serve the surrounding area for decades. Everything changed when live music came to the grocery in 2002, attracting songwriters, artists and visitors worldwide. Today, Thursday Open Mic Night is considered the unofficial gateway to Music City by upand-coming musicians. Fox & Locke had no idea their little country store would someday be known as a top-shelf music venue, but they did know how an authentic, friendly gathering spot can create a tight-knit community.

“Fox and Locke is proud to be THE 120seat boutique performing arts center venue supported by excellent food and beverage operations here. But we are not really a restaurant – Fox & Locke is a serious music venue that offers a unique experience for visitors. Creators and studio musicians, like David Hood of the Swampers, do not go on tour but will play at the venue. You will see things here you will not see anywhere else,“ Aubrey Preston says. “We will have musicians that travel all over the world that play at places like the Blue Note in New York City or even from Tokyo. We do take a lot of pride and place a high priority on raising the next generation of creators, players and performers,” he says. Although it is not really a restaurant, if you like southern flavor and good music…you gotta go! They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a full bar, of course. I HIGHLY recommend the catfish and maple pecan pie. Leiper’s Fork Distillery leipersforkdistillery.com Put this on YOUR MUST DO list! This is an experience you will be telling everyone about and will not soon forget. “Leiper’s Fork Distillery is recapturing the lost art of small-batch production, using local ingredients and pouring our heart and soul into every drop we produce to bring a premium Tennessee spirit from grain to glass,” says Lee Kennedy, the Proprietor and Distiller. The retail store is located in a 200-year-old log cabin built by one of the mid-state’s early settlers. The look and feel of the distillery takes you back to an era before

the industrial revolution. Lastly, Leiper’s Fork Distillery sits on twenty-seven rolling acres just outside the historic village of Leiper’s Fork – a breathtaking getaway just down the street! They offer tours on the hour, every hour! Visit them for a tour and tasting…you will not regret it! A Real Local leipersfork.com Cindy IS real estate in Leiper’s Fork. Cindy Garvey is the Owner/Broker at United Country Real Estate Leiper’s Fork. Cindy has lived here for thirty-three years and tells: “When I came here there was Puckett’s Grocery (when it was a grocery), Leiper’s Fork Market, which looked nothing like it does today, Country Boy Restaurant and where the art gallery is today, was a gas station. Some of the biggest changes are family homes being converted into businesses.” She has watched families raise their kids across the street, but come to town today, any day, and cars are lined up and down the street. I asked her what the reason for the popularity is, she replied: “It’s the Kool-Aid! Everybody is drinking the Kool-Aid. You come, you drink it and you love Leiper’s Fork.” Cindy describes Leiper’s Fork as Mayberry with music. You owe it to yourself to take a break, take a day and enjoy a visit to Leiper’s Fork. You will thank yourself later. Enjoy.

NBBY Part V: Muscle Shoals On our final leg of exploring Nashville’s Big Back Yard, I had the absolute pleasure of visiting The Shoals along with Mr. Rob Carnegie, President & Chief Executive Officer of Florence-Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Shoals comprise the metropolitan areas of Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia and Sheffield, Alabama. The Shoals offers a rich musical heritage, is home to the birthplace of Helen Keller, houses the state’s only Frank Llyod Wright Home and the University of North Alabama. This area presents a wealth of recreational opportunities in their parks and the beautiful Tennessee River. It was a trip I will never forget and cannot tell enough people about it! Getting to meet Rob was a blessing; it was quite the experience and built what I hope is an ongoing friendship. So, without further ado, come along with us to The Shoals. For starters, any discussion about American music that does not include Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is not really a discussion at all. Heart-pounding. Soul-shaking. Iconic. Many words have been used to describe the Muscle Shoals sound. The sound implored a generation of musicians to travel to the southern banks of the Tennessee River, searching for a bit of that Muscle Shoals magic. FAME Recording Studios famestudios.com Originally housed above the city drugstore in Florence, Florence Alabama Music Enterprises was founded in 1959 by Rick Hall, Billy Sherrill and Tom Stafford. In 1960, Rick took over sole ownership, moved the studio to Muscle Shoals (Wilson Dam Highway), and shortened the name to the acronym FAME. This is where Muscle Shoals would have its first international success with Arthur Alexander’s You Better Move On – also recorded by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. After a year of success, the studio moved to its current location at 603 East Avalon Avenue, Muscle Shoals. 66 | SUMMER 2022

The famous sign above the entryway into FAME’s studios reads: “Through these doors walk the finest Musicians, Songwriters, Artists, and Producers in the World.” This is as true today as it was in 1961. Since it first opened its doors, FAME has welcomed a literal who’s who of music royalty from Etta James, Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin to Alicia Keys, Demi Lovato and Jason Isbell. They have all come searching for the beautiful, soulful, sonic footprint that defines FAME Recording Studios. Muscle Shoals Sound The studio opened in early 1969 by the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, The Swampers (David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Roger Hawkins and Barry Beckett). They began working together at Rick Hall’s Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals, where they became well-renowned in the recording industry for playing a unique style of funky R&B. The musicians decided to become entrepreneurs, leaving their positions at FAME, and establishing Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield, Alabama. At the time, this studio was the only recording studio owned and operated by the session musicians. The four musicians were equal partners in the endeavor working as studio musicians, booking sessions, paying the bills and handling all aspects of a running business. I had the opportunity to visit both historic studios and walking through the doors was magical. As I thought about all the talent and history that took place before me, I was mesmerized. Then, I met and talked with David Hood, bassist for The Swampers, and his wife Judy Hood, Chairwoman of Muscle Shoals Music Foundation. When I asked Judy to describe Muscle Shoals, she said: “For many people, the music created in Muscle Shoals is the soundtrack for their lives. The vast catalog of hits recorded here reflects the talent, creativity and diversity of the musicians who recorded at FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound. The Shoals area is a magical place; visitors are always surprised at the natural beauty and depth of the culture in the

area. Those who come here should expect an experience like no other. When I welcome visitors here, I always ask them if it is their first visit to the Shoals. If they answer ‘yes,’ I smile and say, ‘It won’t be your last.’ People always come back; some even move here.” IVY GREEN: Birthplace of Helen Keller helenkellerbirthplace.org The Ivy Green home was built in 1820, only one year after Alabama became the twenty-second State of the Union. Since 1954, Helen Keller’s birthplace has been a permanent shrine to the miracle that occurred at a well-pump in the small southern town of Tuskegee, Alabama. Standing at the side of the seven-year-old blind and deaf Helen Keller was a young woman named Anne Sullivan. Anne was steadily pumping cool water into one of Helen’s hands while repeatedly tapping out an alphabet code of five letters on the other hand. Suddenly the signals crossed Helen’s consciousness with a meaning. She knew that W-A-TE-R meant the cool something flowing over hand. By nightfall, Helen had learned thirty words. Sue Pilkilton, the Executive Director of Ivy Green, said: “We try to focus on all the accomplishments and barriers that Ms. Keller had to face due to her disabilities. Our mission is to keep Ms. Keller’s legacy alive by bringing hope to those struggling with disabilities. Helen Keller’s birthplace is an international tourist attraction bringing visitors from all fifty states and fifty-five foreign countries in 2019.” The Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House Museum wrightinalabama.com The Rosenbaum House, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a single-family home built for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in Florence, Alabama. The Rosenbaum is the only Wright architecture in Alabama and one of only twenty-six pre-World War II Usonian houses. In 1960, Architecture critic Peter Blake wrote, “during the 1930s, Wright built four structures of a beauty unexcelled in America before or since.” After

touring The Rosenbaum House, I got to see what all the fuss about Frank Lloyd Wright is…and it is impressive. Every little detail, foresight and planning...genius! As the evening rolled around, I checked into the Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa. And I was NOT expecting this – it is incredible! The hotel includes an upscale spa, indoor pool, outdoor resort-style pool, Swampers Bar & Grill and the 360 Grille. Rob and I had dinner at the 360 Grille, a revolving restaurant on top of the Renaissance Tower, some twenty-plus floors up. The food is fantastic. The views are breathtaking. Plan your visit soon: marriott.com/en-us/hotels/mslmc-marriott-shoals. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail rtjgolf.com On the final morning, I got to play the Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail and… WOW, I was not disappointed. The RTJ Golf Trail is home to two eighteen-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson Dams on the Tennessee River. The Wheeler Dam is named in honor of General Joseph “Fighting Joe” Wheeler, the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals was the first trail course to break 8,000 yards. While the second course, The Schoolmaster, is named for President Woodrow Wilson, who was known as “The Schoolmaster” of politics and was responsible for constructing the Wilson Dam. “Visitors will fall in love with The Shoals for the hospitality and rich variety of attractions in the area. If you love music, we got it! If you love history, we got it! If you love golf, we got it! And that is just the start. So, come and see why we are the Hit Recording Capital of the World and experience the food, comfort and excitement of The Shoals!” says Rob. I’d say that sums it up! There is much to see and do just 100 miles down the road in our BIG BACK YARD. So, do yourself a favor and mark this on your list! And I’ll meet you in The Shoals!

THE HEAT THIS SUMMER LAKE WATER SPORTS INFORMATION COURTESY OF KOA.COM

Yearning for a bit of H2O with your sports? There are many water activities you can do right here in Tennessee. So, whether you are looking for an adrenaline rush or a relaxing time, there is a water sport for everyone!

Wakeboarding Wake boarding is the ultimate sport for those who want to try jumping the boat’s wake. A wake board has a significant amount of “pop” to it. As you ride up the slope of the wake, it naturally wants to hold and release the tension, giving you as much air as you are willing to try for. Water skiing Water skiing is a full-body workout! From gripping the tow rope to keeping your legs underneath you, you are sure to feel its effects the next day. Nevertheless, the sport brings a unique joy and accomplishment when you achieve standing height as the water zips underneath you. The key to getting up on your skis is this: Keep your skis directly in front of you with your knees tucked up against your chest. The farther you extend your

knees, the harder it is to get up, so staying crouched lets you pop out of the water quickly and with less effort. Knee boarding This sport involves resting on your knees on a teardropshaped board, with a strap over your thighs to keep you secure. Knee boarding is easy to pick up and is an absolute blast for anyone looking to rip around the water behind a boat. It is the easiest water sport to pick up compared to water skiing and wake boarding. Canoeing & Kayaking With all the lakes and rivers in middle Tennessee, there is nothing better than hopping in a canoe or kayak and paddling around to see what you can find. The best part about kayaking and canoeing is the quiet it brings. With nothing

but the sound of your paddles lapping the water, you can travel in blissful peace to every nook and cranny of the body of water you are exploring. So pack a picnic, explore hidden coves and travel up and down rivers. Fishing Fishing is a favorite pastime for many. Whether fishing to eat or catch and release, something is enchanting and rustic about casting a line into the water and seeing what nibbles. Fishing in rivers and lakes is considered one of the most relaxing forms of fishing. No matter a kayak, canoe or on foot, it is sure to be a therapeutic experience. Ensure you have the proper permits to go fishing - check local hunting and fishing authorities to ensure that you have all the licenses you need.

You’re One in a Melon REFRESHING WATERMELON RECIPES

There truly is no other fruit as synonymous with summer as the watermelon. With its bright color and delicious taste, it’s the perfect hot-day treat. So whether you enjoy yours by the slice, in cocktail form or prepared as part of a dish, make sure to enjoy some this season! These watermelon recipes are not only refreshing but are full of vitamin B, antioxidants, potassium and calcium – the perfect way to stay hydrated during the hot, southern summer!

Watermelon Salad with Herbed Yogurt Sauce COURTESY OF COOKIE + KATE Total time: 30 minutes Servings: 6 WATERMELON SALAD INGREDIENTS 3 pounds ripe seedless watermelon (about ½ small round watermelon or 4 cups cubed), cut into ¾ inch cubes 2 mini cucumbers or 1 small cucumber, thinly sliced into rounds ½ cup thinly sliced shallot (1 medium-to-large shallot) 3 Tbsp. sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar ¼ tsp. fine sea salt 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil Flaky sea salt or kosher salt, to taste Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Garnish: small handful of fresh mint and basil leaves, torn if large HERBED YOGURT SAUCE INGREDIENTS 1 cup Greek yogurt ⅓ cup lightly packed combination of fresh basil and mint leaves 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 tsp. honey or maple syrup Pinch of fine sea salt DIRECTIONS 1. In a small bowl, combine the sliced shallot with the vinegar and ¼ tsp salt. Toss to combine, and place in the refrigerator to lightly pickle while you prepare the rest of the salad. 2. Make the yogurt sauce: In a food processor, combine the yogurt, fresh herbs, olive oil, honey and a pinch of salt. Blend until the herbs are broken into tiny pieces, and the sauce is pale green. (If you do not have a food processor, finely chop the herbs and whisk the ingredients together in a bowl.) 3. Swirl the yogurt sauce (all of it) over the base of a large serving platter. Scatter the cubed watermelon on top, followed by the cucumber. Arrange the pickled shallot on top and spoon the leftover vinegar over the salad. 4. Drizzle two Tbsp. of olive oil on top, sprinkle generously with fresh herbs and season with salt and pepper to taste. If you will not be serving it immediately, place the salad in the refrigerator to stay chilled. This salad is best served within an hour or two. 76 | SUMMER 2022

Watermelon Salsa COURTESY OF GIMME SOME OVEN Total time: 10 minutes Servings: 6 – 8

Chocolate-Covered Watermelon Bites COURTESY OF JUST A TASTE Total time: 40 minutes Servings: 6

INGREDIENTS 4 cups diced seedless watermelon 1 cup diced red onion (about half a medium red onion) 2/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint leaves 1–2 jalapeno(s), seeded and finely diced (add more/less to taste) Zest and juice of 1 lime

INGREDIENTS 3 cups cubed watermelon (1-inch cubes) 1 cup chopped chocolate Garnish: sea salt, coconut, almonds, etc. (optional)

DIRECTIONS Toss all ingredients together until combined. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate for up to two days. Fresh Watermelon Margarita COURTESY OF THE SPRUCE EATS Total time: 5 minutes Servings: 2 cocktails INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup sea salt, for rimming 1 tsp. chili powder, for rimming 1 cup watermelon cubes 2 oz reposado tequila (or blanco) 1 oz triple sec 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice, from 1 large lime Garnish: watermelon wedges, lime wedges and mint sprigs

DIRECTIONS 1. Line a baking sheet or large plate with wax paper. Arrange the watermelon cubes on the wax paper so that they are not touching one another. Stick a toothpick atop each piece of watermelon, then place the baking sheet in the freezer for thirty minutes. 2. Melt the chopped chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave. Dip each frozen piece of watermelon into the melted chocolate. Shake off any excess chocolate, then immediately sprinkle the chocolate with sea salt. (The chocolate will harden very quickly.) Return the dipped watermelon pieces to the wax paper to set fully. Serve immediately or store in the freezer until ready to serve. Note: Do not use chocolate chips in this recipe due to their waxy coating, which makes it difficult for the chocolate to adhere to the watermelon.

DIRECTIONS 1. Rim two double old-fashioned glasses: Mix the salt and chili powder in a shallow dish, wet the rim by wiping it with a lime wedge, then dip or roll it into the chili salt. 2. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the watermelon cubes into a juicy pulp. 3. Fill the shaker with ice. Add the tequila, triple sec and lime juice – shake well. 4. Use both a cocktail strainer and mesh strainer to strain the drink over fresh ice into the prepared glasses. 5. Garnish with watermelon and lime wedges and a sprig of mint. Serve and enjoy.

Be a Block Star!

THREE PROJECTS TO MAKE YOUR LANDSCAPE THE NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITE WITH GARDEN MEDIA GROUP

The days of the ho-hum landscape are gone. Now more than ever, our yard is truly an extension of the home. Crafting an outdoor space for entertaining, relaxing or playing is not all about construction projects and expensive stonework–thank goodness! The plants and trees you choose are just as important as hardscaping to maximize your outdoor living space’s beauty, functionality and efficiency. Try one of these planting projects and watch as your space takes on a whole new life. A ‘BERRY SWEET’ HOLIDAY Did you know July is National Blueberry Month? Celebrate by planting tasty treats that look as sweet as they taste. Blueberries may be small, but they pack a big nutritional punch! Midnight Cascade and Sapphire Cascade from Bushel and Berry produce tasty fruit all summer long without needing much space. Also, these blueberry plants have pretty spring flowers and bright fall foliage to sweeten the deal. If you have enough space to create a hedge of blueberries, BerryBux is an ideal choice. This ornamental blueberry plant looks like a boxwood but has the bonus of blueberries. Its boxwood-like foliage and compact habit make it perfect for planting as a hedge or in groups in the garden. Plus, it is easy to care for with very little pruning. A MINI CHILDREN’S GARDEN Experts agree that a child’s exposure to nature can have a lifelong impact on their appreciation of plants and animals—plant seeds of learning and discovery with a mini children’s garden. Children naturally gravitate toward plants that attract the five senses. So, appeal to their sense of touch with silvery soft lamb’s ear; its subtle blue hues pop against purple shrubs like Purple Diamond Loropetalum or Autumn Majesty Encore 80 | SUMMER 2022

Azalea, which use bright colors to enchant little ones. Next, children can not resist a deep whiff of a fragrant flower like gardenias, which thrive in Middle Tennessee. Try the ScentAmazing or Jubilation Gardenia varieties from the Southern Living Plant Collection with their crisp white blooms and perfume-like scent. And finally, what sensory garden would be complete without a tasty treat? Herbs like rosemary and thyme smell and taste terrific, and their dense growth habit makes them attractive in pots and as garden borders. Educators have observed that children are more likely to try new foods if they have grown or picked them–so if you have a picky eater at the dinner table, give home-grown herbs a try! MADE IN THE SHADE Sun protection is critical in the hot summer months, and plants can be an essential partner in this regard. “Large canopied, low-maintenance trees are one of the best investments you can make in your yard. They raise home values, provide shade for play structures and eating areas and can even lower air conditioning bills by keeping homes cooler during the hot summer months,” says Scott Johnson, a certified arborist with The Davey Tree Expert Company in Nashville. Scott recommends white oak, tulip poplar and sugar maple as excellent local choices for their coverage and natural beauty. Some homeowners fret about landscaping in the shade, but a world of colorful, vibrant options awaits in the full and partial shade plant palette. Beneath larger trees, layer small to mid-sized shrubs with texture and blooms; try the delicate foliage of Soft Caress Mahonia or the bell-like flowers of Mountain Snow Pieris for two striking shade-loving options. When you center your outdoor space around creative and functional plants, their beauty, utility and growth will bring you season after season of delight.

THE WORLD OF WALLPAPER PERSONALIZING YOUR HOME WITH MALMBERG WALLPAPER BY AMELIA ROSE SMITH

Robert Malmberg, an award-winning portraiture, still life and landscape photographer, has over fifteen years of experience in the industry. Robert’s career as a professional photographer took off in New York City in 2006. He had a commercial studio and gallery space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, for eight years where he produced photo shoots for clients and hosted events. This endeavor influenced Robert to sell his photography print to interior designers as a way to make connections and be known. What started as a side project turned into another realm of his business, which eventually led to… Malmberg Wallpaper. 82 | SUMMER 2022

Malmberg Wallpaper launched in March of 2021 as a result of the pandemic and extra time for creativity. Robert’s extensive background in art, paired with his curiosity for interior design, inspired this venture. He has also pulled artistry for multiple of his creations from the Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach. Rorschach’s education in art helped develop the set of inkblots that were experimentally used to measure unconscious parts of a subject’s personality. The inspiration from Herman Rorschach is found in Malmberg’s designs, “Ink Blot Study” and “Cheetah.” Malmberg Wallpaper combines professional fine art photography with mixed media artwork, resulting in striking designs. Most of the prints

begin with a photograph shot by Robert himself. From there, Robert starts designing the pattern and the unique qualities it will involve. Robert feels that his use of photography within his wallpaper gives it a unique edge - and we agree! As you look closely at Robert’s prints, you can see the raw moments and real-life subjects captured through photography. These details bring life into a space by sparking conversation and drawing attention to the room’s features. The design process from start to finish takes time and intention, but Robert has found gratification through the appreciation of his designs by interior decorators, designers and homeowners alike. The wallpaper is printed in the United States

of America with eco-friendly, heavy nonwoven vellum paper. Each uniquely-crafted pattern is digitally printed and is available by the yard in residential and commercial grade paper. As of now, sixteen designs come in multiple different colorways. Robert

describes the collection as it stands as “quite bold, colorful and maximalist leaning.” In addition to wallpaper, Robert offers original fine art prints, both framed and unframed. Malmberg Wallpaper is featured in showrooms

in Chicago, Houston, Miami and New Orleans, with hopes to open one right outside of Williamson County in Nashville! For more, visit robertmalmberg.com.

WALLPAPERING 101 Wallpaper truly reshapes a space. Robert says, “Having done it in our own home, it is totally transformative. Wallpaper is a way to revamp, recreate and personalize a room, no matter how big or small! Wallpaper can set the mood of a room, whether that be calm and serene or bold and moody – a style MALMBERG Wallpaper has captured – it can create a frame of mind or essence in a space. Robert acknowledges that wallpaper can be intimidating. But, if anything, start with a water closet, powder room or kid’s bedroom to step into the world of wallpaper! CHOOSING THE RIGHT WALLPAPER 1. It is so deeply personal – go with your gut! Work with a designer if needed and feel free to step in and add your input too. “YOU will be the one living in the space and seeing it every day. YOU need to love it!” 2. Order samples– Browse the offerings, narrow the selections, pin them on the wall and live with ‘them’ for a while. As you walk by and live in the space, one will catch your eye! 3. Hire a pro! A professional hanger will save you the stress of mistakes. They know how to measure the precise amount of paper needed for the space.

INKBLOT STUDY: ‘Inkblot Study’ is inspired by Herman Rorschach’s ink blot test. The Rorschach test was introduced in 1921 and is a psychological test where subjects’ perceptions of inkblots are recorded, then analyzed. Robert was artistically drawn to this test due to its hieroglyphic-esque symbols that create a bold and unrepeatable pattern. The ‘Inkblot Study’ comprises numerous original “plates,” as Robert refers to the mirrored images. Robert made the print by using mars black and iridescent gold acrylic paint. This pattern is a beautiful statement for a room or lounge area. Available in: White, Hummingbird Pink and Gold

SETTING UP FOR

Retirement Retirement WITH LINEAGE BANK

You have heard it: “Saving early is the best thing you can do.” While starting to save for retirement prematurely is essential, those in their 30s and 40s who have not paid much attention to retirement, can still set themselves up for a pleasant life post-retirement. However, you don’t want to wait too long, because time is vital, and you need time for your money to grow in a retirement account. Even $20-$25 a month in your 20s can pay dividends later for those just beginning their careers. So, if you feel you can not set aside more than that right now, don’t worry. It is perfectly fine to set money aside for immediate needs first and focus on retirement later. However, the longer you wait, the less time you have for your money to work for you. Paying Off Debt Everyone’s primary goal should be to reach retirement debt-free. This includes credit cards, student loans, car payments, mortgage loans, etc. You never want to be in your non-earning years owing money. Creating a Budget Everyone should track their current earnings and spending. Therefore, your budget should reflect all your current income and expenses. It is also a good idea to put retirement savings in your budget, just like your necessities (food, home, etc.), so you ensure you are adequately saving. Emergency Account The first thing most people do when facing financial hardship is tap into retirement accounts. A separate emergency account with about six months of salary savings allows you to cover unexpected costs without dipping into your retirement. Automatic Transfers Automatic transfers allow you to swiftly move money from your checking account to your retirement account. For example, you can set it up on the same day every month – the day you get paid. Eventually, you will get used to not ‘having’ that money in your everyday spending. If you need help setting up retirement accounts or need answers to the tough questions, call Lineage Bank today at 629.248.9085. We will help you get on the right track towards a retirement you will enjoy, no matter your age.

“Someday” Will Come. Plan to Enjoy it.

Read Between the Lines

Iconic Male Authors TALENTED AUTHORS WHOSE BOOKS ARE WIDELY READ AND LOVED BY EMILY EVANS

Summer is here! Of my many memories of summer, one of the best is going to our local bookstore in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, with my dad to stock up on books to read. As an educator, administrator and English teacher, summer meant he had a more flexible schedule. We spent lots of time playing tennis, swimming, riding bikes, boating and reading, especially during the four weeks spent on a lake in Maine every summer. I distinctly remember the summer before I started seventh grade and middle school when he introduced me to The Red Pony by John Steinbeck. I felt so grown up reading a more sophisticated novel and loved discussing it with my dad. I then read Travels with Charley and The Pear, also by John Steinbeck. I was so proud that I had broadened my reading repertoire and could discuss novels with my dad that I know he taught and admired.

Throughout middle and upper schools, in our English classes, we read novels by many iconic male authors such as George Orwell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, Mark Twain, J.D. Salinger, Nathaniel Hawthorne, among many others. I especially loved Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath. As a parent, I have loved rereading and discussing some of my favorite books with my children as they have read them in school. It has been interesting to see which books they have enjoyed and which authors are now introduced to them today as opposed to in the 80s when I was in school. My three children have all had to read Catcher in the Rye and some Shakespeare and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Big Short by Michael Lewis. This summer, my rising high school junior is reading Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and Never Let Me

Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I am excited to see a diverse summer reading list for today’s students in addition to the many classics. Most of us were introduced to countless authors in school, such as Charles Dickens, William Faulkner, James Joyce, Stan Lee, C.S. Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, and Leo Tolstoy. Furthermore, Sherman Alexie, Bill Bryson, Dan Brown, Tom Clancy, Harlan Coben, Pat Conroy, Michael Crichton, Clive Cussler, John Grisham, Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut and Tom Wolfe. They are all incredibly talented authors whose books are widely read and loved. Whether it is a classic book on a summer reading list or a debut novel, I hope you will find time this summer to enjoy expanding your reading repertoire and sharing the power of the written word with family and friends.

MAY WE ALL: A NEW COUNTRY MUSICAL WITH FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE’S BRIAN KELLEY

It All Starts With a Song FEATURE Arts & Culture

BY AMELIA ROSE SMITH

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNY ANDERSON

Brian Kelley is an American musician, best known as a member of the Nashville-based duo Florida Georgia Line (FGL). In addition to his success as an artist and music producer, Brian is the co-producer of May We All, a country music musical set to debut at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center on June 15th. May We All takes the audience to “the town that sings,” called Harmony, Tennessee. The story follows Jenna Coates, a local sensation who left her hometown of Harmony, to pursue her dreams of stardom in Nashville. Four years later, Jenna still has not landed a record deal nor has a dime to spare, so she returns home. The musical follows Jenna as she reconnects with those she loved, makes peace with her past and fights to save the small town she loves! The idea of May We All came about in 2017 when Michael Barret from Lively McCabe Entertainment approached Brian and his cousin, Stephen Snedden (co-owner of CuzBro Productions), about creating a country music musical. Between Michael’s expertise in Broadway, musical licensing and everything the industry entails, and Brian’s success as an artist and music producer, it seemed like the perfect opportunity! Immediately, Brian and Stephen were intrigued by this fresh, new concept that had never been done before. “It was a no-brainer; blending both worlds felt like the perfect fit and the pieces to the puzzle were connecting so easily,” explains Brian. Brian tells how the process of creating this musical has been different than creating an album. “It’s a longer game than making a record; In the past, it has taken about one or two years at most, which is a quicker turnaround than a show of this magnitude.” He goes on to say: “This musical is a different process. We are always editing the script and story and really fine-tuning everything. It takes patience.” The musical takes a twist on the traditional casting of a show by incorporating a rotating lineup of country music guest artists who will step into the role of “Bailey Stone.” Brian Kelley will make his debut as Bailey on June 15th, the musical’s opening night. The star-studded roster expected to perform includes: Alana Springsteen, Alexandra Kay, BRELAND, Canaan Smith, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Chris Ruediger, Cooper Alan, Danielle Bradbery, Jamie O’Neal, Lainey Wilson, Lindsay Ell, LOCASH, Nick Fradiani, Robyn Ottolini, Scarlett Burke, Thomas Mac, Tigirlily, Trent Harmon and many more. The show includes an authentic country score of songs by Dolly Parton, Chris Stapleton, Johnny Cash, Kasey Musgraves, Keith Urban and more top chart country songs. The set list also includes two original songs written by FGL’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard. Brian explains that hearing these songs live a different life through the story of May We All allows the audience to find different perspectives. It takes a team, and this crew is working hard to create a musical for people of all ages to enjoy! Brian, along with the rest of the cast, hopes to see May We All evolve into a touring show, traveling to places where country music tours go. So, bring your kids, grandparents, siblings and friends to enjoy a night of song, story and a taste of Nashville’s country music culture!
