Editor's

note

Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humour to console him for what he is. Philosopher Francis Bacon wrote that nearly 400 years ago, but the truth of his words have never faded in all this time. In fact, today humour has so many uses that we do not realise how important a crutch it has become to our existence. We use humour in so many ways to help lead our lives. Let me count the ways: When we are happy, we tell jokes to heighten our sense of merriment. When we are upset, we actively look for funny entertainment to take our mind off things. When we are angry, we employ sarcasm to make our point of view heard. When we are nervous, we attempt to break the ice by cracking lame jokes. Comedians, then, have perhaps the most important job in our society. As messengers of laughter, they extend a helping hand to us in our search for humour. This is precisely why we have picked Vir Das and a host of other comedians for our cover story. These people have helped make comedy go mainstream in a variety of mediums – for instance, Vir Das alone delivers chuckles through his stand-up routines, through his comic performances in film, via his comedyrock band Alien Chutney and with a variety of shows through his company Weirdass Comedy. As for the other comedians, they have found avenues as obscure and innovative as coasters, web comics and podcasts to disseminate humour. Closely allied to the business of entertaining people is the business of managing entertainers themselves. We adore the personalities we see on stage and screen, but we never know about the nameless, faceless people responsible for shaping and delivering those personalities to us. Talent management is one heck of a job and we’ve explored this upcoming career avenue in this issue. This month we’re all going to be glued to our televisions for another kind of entertainment – the IPL! We’re quite excited to watch our favourite teams battle it out for the wins and the glories, so we’ve put together a list of exciting IPL matches that will make this a memorable tournament. Sports fans will find another item of delight in this issue – an interview with squash star Dipika Pallikal. For those whom entertainment can wait on account of a string of competitive exams they have to take this month, we wish you all the very best. May you ace every test!

Around the World Goa students will now get tablets and notebooks for `25

I

f you are a student in the smallest state of the country, there is great news for you. Goa has long been one of the forerunners in educating students on technological knowhow and familiarising them with gadgets of the modern day. In the past, the state was the first to distribute free laptops to students and a new scheme will make notebooks and tablet PCs readily affordable for students in the state. The state government has shuffled aside a budget of `95 crore to purchase nearly 50,000 notebooks and tablet PCs to be distributed among students who register for the scheme. General category students will need to pay `25 while students in the SC and ST categories can pay `10 to register for the scheme. The computers will be installed with security so they cannot be misused to visit pornographic websites and other controversial websites but only those that fulfill the purpose of educating students. Students registering for the scheme will also need to submit a no objection certificate from their parents before receiving the computers.

DIGIGIRLZ WILL HOPEFULLY HELP MORE WOMEN JOIN IT SECTOR IN INDIA

A

running joke for most engineering college students is that women are rarely seen on campus. There is some truth in this joke since the number of female students enrolled in IIT colleges amounts for only 15% of the entire student body and the figures are only slightly better in other institutes. But this number is sure to change if Microsoft is able to influence the young Indian women of today. The software giant has launched a programme called DigiGirlz to encourage female students to take up technology and engineering as a possible career choice in India. The programme will allow young women to visit Microsoft’s offices to learn about careers in technology, interact with the employees at Microsoft for a firsthand understanding of working in the sector and participate in workshops for a hands-on experience. In surveys conducted previously, women accounted for only 30% of employees in the IT sector which will hopefully increase after implementation of this programme. The programme was launched in Microsoft’s Hyderabad office in February with a participation of 80 women and will be launched in their offices in the coming months.

Scholarships to increase diversity at ISB

S

tudying at the Indian School of Business (ISB) can be expected to become cheaper for those opting to apply for their one-year programme (PGP). ISB has made it possible for anyone applying for their one-year course to be eligible for their Diversity Scholarship which aims to improve the diversity of the ISB classroom. 40 scholarships will be given under the category, amounting to a total of `2.50 crore. The scholarship will cover the sectors of healthcare, government, social service, hospitality, media, fashion, manufacturing, finance, marketing and sales, and technology. There will also be scholarships for women to increase the gender diversity in the class. The scholarship will be awarded subject to past academic record, GMAT scores, personal and professional achievements, essays, etc. and a round of personal interviews for shortlisted candidates.

DUAL DEGREES:

_FOCUS FEATURE

D

ual degree programmes have been around for quite some time but it is only in the last decade that they have made their foray into the Indian landscape. Their rising popularity can be best summed up in what the student gains out of them. For students, completing two degrees in a span of five years always makes for a good choice as they end up saving a year – for example, doing a BE and an MSc normally takes six years (four plus two years respectively) but under a dual degree programme, it can be wrapped up in five years. Students familiar with the programme will tell you that pursuing it isn’t exactly a common scenario in India. Also, once you get into it, you can expect a considerably hectic schedule to follow. And unless you see the absolute need for it, it won’t work for you. This leads us to our question: is a dual degree programme a viable option for you?

INDUSTRY

Strictly speaking, the industry doesn’t differentiate much between a student who has pursued, say, only a BTech and someone who has done a dual degree course. However, this extends only as far as non-core companies in IT, finance, consulting, etc are concerned. Companies may give preference to dual degree holders as

their requirements are better filled. “The possibility of campus placements for dual degree students is higher than those who have done a pure master’s course,” says S. Sadagopan, director at International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bangalore. Also, there are organisations that prefer individuals having multiple specialities as it enables them to make the most out of their skills. Thus, chances of hiring such candidates are higher than those with a single degree, which means dual degree holders might advance faster in their careers.

RESEARCH

The IITs are the pioneers of the dual degree programmes in India. They felt a need for having a greater research culture among students. These programmes are a great option for those planning to enter the pure sciences as it saves them a year which would have otherwise been spent in completing their master’s degree. It also works for those planning to pursue their doctorate after the completion of the five-year course.

CERTAINTY

There’s no doubt that the dual degree programme is brilliant and works amazingly well. At the same time, it would do well to reflect on its pros and cons in equal measure. You can make the most of its benefits, only

if you need them in the first place. Along with its merits also come a few drawbacks which make it a programme of choice and not an absolute necessity for all. Let’s assume you’re a BE student and don’t exactly have the research bent of mind. Your priority is to find work quickly. Pursuing a master’s in the dual degree programme may actually be counter-productive for you as you end up doing a course that has no material value for you. There’s also a school of thought that perceives doing master’s from a foreign university as a better option than doing it in India. Again, in their case, a dual degree programme doesn’t make for a viable option. That said and done, there’s a great opportunity the dual degree programmes has brought in recent years. Considering the growing tendency of pursuing an MBA right after graduation by many students, many colleges have started a dual degree programme wherein a student can complete his BTech and MBA in five years. Inter-disciplinary programmes are a great way to set up one’s career and save a year in the process too. Much like any other career choice, it comes down to whether it works for you or not. A dual degree programme isn’t meant for everyone, but if it clicks for you, go for it. APRIL 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 17

HOW USEFUL IS A DUAL DEGREE?

ROHIT BHAT, BITS PILANI GRADUATE “A dual degree in BITS Pilani consists of an MSc degree along with a BE degree, completed in five years overall. Often, the right combination of the two can be worth more than what a single degree can achieve. Maths and computer science complement each other, while any engineering degree with economics might be fruitful for people looking for an MBA or start up. Also, a dual degree is an added advantage to people who might not have scored that well during the entrance exam, as it gives them equal opportunity during placements and higher education as the single degree students. Dual degree students in BITS Pilani have the option of doing a thesis or internship for a whole year, which adds great industrial and research exposure to the academic education they would have received in the previous four years.”

KAVITA SINGH, CEO, FUTUREWORKS CONSULTING “I speak to several potential applicants who believe that a dual degree programme is always better than pursuing an MBA alone. It’s actually really important to assess if it is the right programme for you. Assess your background to determine what skills you already possess and what skills you need to gain. Then assess whether the MBA alone could help you to gain through requisite skills. For example, during your MBA you could choose to cross register at another school for a couple of classes to help you build specific knowledge and skills – if that is sufficient given your background and goals then the dual degree may not be right for you.”

INSTITUTES THAT OFFER DUAL DEGREES

Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT): • Guwahati • Kanpur • Kharagpur • Indore • JNTU Hyderabad • BITS Goa • BITS Pilani • National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT): • Hyderabad • Allahabad

PRANAV KAMAT, STUDENT, UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO

“When you’re pursuing engineering in India or for that matter, anywhere else, you only have the slightest idea of what lies ahead. For example, many of my friends in CSE [computer science] now think that ECE [electronics and communications engineering] would have been a better choice. Moreover, master’s [degrees] are traditionally done in a field you find interesting during your bachelor’s [degree]. If by chance, the discipline you chose turns out to be the one you love, its kickass. But personally, I don’t find it worth the risk.”

All about SUMMER SCHOOLS Aniket Nikumb and Apurva Raghavan, who spent a summer at London School of Economics (LSE) and Harvard University respectively, write about the summer school system outside India and its benefits

M

WHAT IS A SUMMER SCHOOL?

ost universities around the world take a hiatus from their standard academic programmes during the summer months (June to September) as students head out for vacations or internships. During this period, some universities including Harvard University, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and University of California at Berkeley offer a summer programme that lasts for 3 to 7 weeks. A summer school programme would typically cover a single topic or subject that is taught over the course of one semester with high intensity over the few weeks. Applications are open to both internal and external students.

THE ADMISSION PROCESS

Admission process for a summer school starts usually by January of the year for which one is applying for summer school. The admission process is relatively simple as compared to a traditional full-year programme. Schools will generally not ask for a Statement of Purpose (SoP), specific test scores (GMAT/ GRE) or letters of recommendation. For advanced courses, schools may require one to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in subject fundamental – for instance, the Alternative Investments programme at the LSE prescribes prerequisites as basic mathematics and statistics, microeconomics and introductory finance. Students can prove their

THE ADVANTAGES OF

summer schools

_FOREIGN SHORES

• Summer schools offers students a unique opportunity to study a topic that might not be offered in one’s undergraduate course, and bring together world-class thinking and the latest knowledge on the subject. • Schools such as Harvard and LSE are cultural melting pots with students of different nationalities. Interacting with different students helps to broaden your own views while making lasting friendships. • It provides a unique opportunity to ‘experience’ a university if one is keen to study further for a postgraduate program in that university. • It provides one ‘bragging rights’ on having been an alumna of a really prestigious university. This undoubtedly helps in job applications and interviews as it can be a real stand-out on one’s resume. Most summer schools also conduct written exams, provide transcripts and offer credits for the course taken.

proficiency via an exam-passing certificate in the specified subject from any university. In Harvard, students may be required to write an exam in the first week of their course and are allowed to continue only if they pass the same to a satisfactory degree. Since individual schools may have their own policies, it is best to check them up on their website or with their admission office before applying.

schools. The other key factors one should consider are the reputation and prestige of the university (nothing matches a Harvard on your resume), the professors for the course, the location of the school (London is one of the most amazing places to spend your summer) and of course, the programmes it offers.

CHOOSING A SUMMER SCHOOL AND A COURSE OF STUDY

PROMINENT SUMMER SCHOOL UNIVERSITIES

Making a choice between the manicured greens of Cambridge, the cosmopolitan life at the LSE or the charm of Berkeley in California is a tough task. One key constraint for students is school dates since summer holidays at home universities will match programme dates of only a few

• LSE, UK: http://www2.lse. ac.uk/study/summerSchools/ summerSchool/Home.aspx • Oxford University, UK: http:// www.oxfordsummerschool. co.uk/ • University of Cambridge, UK: http://www.ice.cam.ac.uk/ courses/summer-schools/ summer-school-programmes • Harvard University, USA: http:// www.summer.harvard.edu/ • New York University, USA: http://www.nyu.edu/summer/ • University of California, Berkeley, USA: http://summer. berkeley.edu/ • Stanford University, USA: http://oso.stanford.edu/ programs/29-stanfordsummer-session

Generally speaking, when choosing a course of study, try and pick courses that will complement your current programme that are not offered in your home university. For instance, a summer programme on alternative investments is a very good fit for someone majoring in finance, since most universities in India do not offer it in their undergraduate programmes. It is also a very good idea to look at courses that complement the expertise of the university, for instance, finance or law is a better choice to study at LSE rather than marketing.

MONEY MATTERS

Summer schools are an expensive affair and can cost as much as US$2,500-US$5,000 (`1,34,200`2,68,400) in tuition fees. Accommodation and meals are generally extra and can cost another US$1,200-US$5,000 (`64,416`2,68,400) depending on the duration of the programme and the type of accommodation chosen (shared, single, etc). In budgeting one’s expenses, one should not forget to include lifestyle expenses, flight tickets, visa fees and incidentals which can easily go up to an additional `2,00,00 at least. Unfortunately, most schools generally do not offer financial aid or scholarships for summer school students. yi APRIL 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 21

HOW TO BE A

‘SUPER INTERN’ Gearing up for your summer internship? Meher Manda lets you in on some tricks to help you make the most of this opportunity

A

t the threshold of graduation, confusion about choosing what you could be doing for the rest of your professional life is tricky matter. And that’s where the loving world of an internship comes in handy. Not that it is the happiest place to be in, but the long, strenuous, no-pay hours will unearth the professional in you.

COLLEGE, ONLY BETTER

Your internship is not your college. Period. College lectures come with a sleuth of information overload that just push you to a greater academic performance. Let’s face it, most of the

education meted out to you is hardly going to help you in your professional career. And that is a sacrifice you pay for a graduation degree from a commendable university. But fret not, an internship is exactly what’s meant for you. Between those fixed time segments when you might have to go get coffee for your colleagues, there is a lot of learning, some good dose of criticism and a lot of practice time offered your way. Very often, in most organisations, you might not get to do the important work at all. But to participate and to see a work structure unravel in front of your eyes is very enriching. And it is an experience that you will take back and encapsulate in your college

projects as well, adding a sense of professionalism to your work.

CRITICISM? DEAL WITH IT

You’re an intern. Everything you do will be strongly scrutinised, checked over and over again and harshly criticised. But taking that to heart and letting it affect your work behaviour and performance is foolhardy. Remember, your superiors are not ganging up on you for fun; in the process, they are building a great learning network. Tunali Mukherjee, a freelance photographer, writer, filmmaker and full time ‘doggy momma’ agrees, “The perfect intern is one who’s eager

24 Youth Incorporated ║ APRIL 2013

24 WALK OF LIFE.indd 24

to learn, doesn’t make excuses for their mistakes, buts thinks about what went wrong and learns from it. You need to be mature and open to people teaching you, scolding you and criticising you; instead of going into a shell and thinking they are mean. They aren’t being mean because you’re an intern, but know more than you and are guiding you – even if it may sound rude to you.”

LET COMMITMENT TAKE THE FRONT SEAT

Internship, for some, may seem like a la-la land – intensely friendly colleagues, barely any work to be done, and a professional set-up – built just for you. But never ever be the one to not participate in things. Always be eager to do a job, offer to take up a project and come with suggestions. Ideating never hurt anybody. Make sure your superiors realise your level of commitment to the opportunity given to you. Having said that, don’t behave like an eager bunny set loose, which brings me to my next point.

politics. Your stay in the organisation is albeit temporary, so never say things that might deem your presence unfavourable.

ANSWER YOUR OWN QUESTIONS

Firstly, and most importantly, figure out why you’re following the internship. As Roshan Kokane, a second year BMM student points out, “Internships will only help us to understand the market better. One cannot learn how to swim unless pushed in water. Also, internships will help us to understand ourselves – what we like and how our future would be.” Channel the reason behind your internship in everything you do at work. That alone will help you be a good intern as you will direct your energy towards building for yourself a fruitful resume.

1. First outing with your team: If you do develop a good relationship with your colleagues, they might just invite you with them for an after-work plan, a movie or dinner. This will just make your internship a much better experience. 2. You’re the man behind the food: Well, interns generally don’t have much work to do, so sometimes you will have to fetch coffee or lunch for your colleagues. If they are nice, they will most likely beg you to do it and even pay your convenience. Either way, it’s an experience you must have.

KEEP YOUR SOCIAL ANIMAL IN CONTROL While pursuing an internship, you will most likely be the youngest in your department. While it is nice to be friendly to everyone, especially to the people closer to your age group, your colleagues are not your ‘chums’ or ‘bros’. While one may never deny that you might develop a special friendship with a few and a great working relationship with others, never take office behaviour for granted. By the end of it all, they are still your colleagues, senior to you on most counts, and more knowledgeable. Make sure you are the note-taker and not the loudmouth, and do not absolutely ever engage in office

THE COOLEST MOMENTS OF AN INTERNSHIP!

“[The perfect intern is] someone who strives to do more than what’s expected of him/her, who understands that the real world is different from college projects and realises that it isn’t all that easy, but that’s why it is truly rewarding.” - Raj Lalwani, Features Editor at a photography magazine

3. Upper and lower boss moment: Each intern is under the responsibility of one head, who is under the main boss. In your moments of weakness, the boss may vent out his frustration on your head, assuming you know nothing, which makes the moment better, if your head is just plain rude to you. 4. The internship letter: Nothing is as beautiful as a job accomplished. The internship letter frees you and sends you back to bunking lectures and delayed submissions. ST RS BEHIND THE

is not born accidentally, but handpicked, honed, showcased and (Amadecelebrity famous. This is the job of a talent manager, finds Aparna Sundaresan (

B FLICKR USER TCDISRUPT

efore Justin Bieber became an international sensation, making music, movies and appearing in TV shows, he was just a school boy in Canada who sang into a camera for fun and uploaded his videos to YouTube. But when Scooter Braun, an American, found those videos by accident, he decided to make Bieber a star.

Scooter Braun

Scooter Braun is a talent manager who manages such musicians as Carly Rae Jepson (of Call Me Maybe fame) and PSY (who gave the world Gangnam Style). Talent managers,

broadly, are those people who guide and manage the careers of people with talent. They are also responsible for spotting artists and potential stars and bringing them to the attention of the world. Additionally, they also keep talentless stars in the limelight for as long as they can. MORE THAN JUST A MANAGER A talent manager’s job is partly secretarial, partly managerial. Managers look for business opportunities for their client – the artist – and hone their talent, promote them and help them make money from their work. This includes helping the artist create content in their area; promoting them through publicity campaigns and endorsements; directing their public appearances for shows, parties and launches; and grooming the artist to become a celebrity. It is now easy to see how Justin Bieber, with Braun’s assistance,

became the megastar of the 21st century. Girish ‘Bobby’ Talwar of OML (Only Much Louder), India’s pioneering music management firm that manages such acts as Pentagram and Swarathma, says of the job, “It’s... someone who is everything to an artist...a roadie, a shoulder to cry on, someone who tells the artist’s girlfriend/wife/other person what the artist is upto from time to time. It’s an individual who understands the artist more than anyone else...The person [must] gauge when an artist gets excited about something and when an artist requires inspiration, when an artist requires monetary support, and to take care of the artist’s day-to-day activities. Today your artist is having a bad day and he doesn’t want to record or shoot or do a show or nothing and you suddenly become a counsellor… so there is no real definition of what an artist manager is supposed to be.

TALENT MANAGEMENT FIRMS IN INDIA • OML (Only Much Louder) • Artist Aloud • CAA KWAN • Carving Dreams • Approach Entertainment • IOS Sports and Entertainment Everything an artist requires is what you need to be.” INSIDE THE STAR’S HEAD A talent manager must think like their client, must understand what is coming out of their head and know what is best for them. If the client is a multi-talented person, the manager decides which of their talents must be promoted when. Talwar illustrates this with his client. “Let’s say someone like Vishal of Pentagram,” he says. “A PR [agent] may feel that the best thing for us to do is to harp on the fact that he’s part of the biggest Bollywood duo in the country at this point, but as an artist manager of Pentagram, that would be the worst thing they could ever do to the band… to start promoting the fact that Vishal is…one half of Vishal-Shekhar, when you’re trying to piggyback on a Pentagram thing. That way, it would just ruin the reputation that you’ve built as an artist manager for Pentagram.” NOT JUST ANY PERSON FLICKR USER AVLXYZ

Managing a star is a difficult job, so a talent manager must be someone who is very well organised and capable of handling the stress of celebrity life. And since stars are never punctual, their managers definitely must be. It’s imperative for managers to think on

their feet too, whether handling their client’s tantrums or when negotiating a deal for them. “You have to be street smart,” adds Talwar, “because most of the time you’re taking decisions which you’ve not thought about and you don’t have the time to think about.” Talent managers are always up for a conversation because this helps them promote their clients. They are also always aware of their client’s moods and know when to give their stars a good talking-to and when to back off, especially before a live show, because then the artist can simply refuse to do the show. STUDY VS. EXPERIENCE There are no specific courses one can study to become a talent manager, but it is helpful to do programmes in cognate areas like marketing, public relations, advertising, media planning, event management, etc. But according to Talwar, nothing beats experience. “Production experience helps. If you’ve done any kind of

events, sound engineering, lights, and technical stuff, that helps because you understand the artist’s head space,” he says. “If you’ve been part of a band or been an actor yourself, that helps you understand what the talent themselves have gone through and are going through.” An internship with a talent management firm would be the right place to pick up the necessary experience. MAKING A LIVING Independent talent managers work on a commission basis and usually charge 15% of their client’s earnings. Those who work for a talent management firm start earning about `15,000 a month and then go up the pay

Bobby Talwar

“The most important thing about [being] an artist manager is you must be passionate...It’s almost like you were the person. You are the musician or you are the actor, because if you are passionate about it, you’re thinking about it 365 days a year. And that’s when you realise what is required.” - Girish ‘Bobby’ Talwar, CoFounder, OML ladder, as they accrue experience. Talent management firms value the relationship managers cultivate and maintain with their clients. LIFE IN THE STARRY LANE There are challenges enough in this job, the biggest being the bankability of the star. Since fame vanishes as quickly as it appears, talent managers have a tough time keeping their artists in the public eye. Not every aspiring artist makes it big, so at the end of the day, the managers struggle just as much as their clients do. The other challenge is its viability as a career option. Talwar says that until five years ago, talent management was not considered as a career choice. “Today, it is a growing field and there is an opportunity for you to be able to get into that space,” he adds. “But…it’s still on shaky ground. Five years in the future, maybe it’s a completely steady space you can get into.” But there is plenty that makes up for the toil. For one, talent managers travel a lot and meet a number of people on the road – most of them creative – which makes for interesting interactions. Second, it allows them to immerse themselves in their area of passion. And third, without them there would be no stars to receive people’s adulations. yi APRIL 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 27

Financial Prophets

re you someone who is fascinated by the future? Not in the Star Wars and Terminator kind of way, but the simpler things of how businesses would get back on track after Hurricane Sandy was done destroying whole cities; or, breaking it down even further, how would your neighbour manage her livelihood after her husband, who was the bread winner of the family, has passed away? If you also have a penchant for finance along with a curiosity for the future, then one of the best career options waiting for you may be as an actuary.

WHAT DOES AN ACTUARY DO?

Actuaries are the guys that make financial sense of the future. An actuary will analyse the past, create a model for the future and assess the risks involved to convert what the future holds into financial terms.

With the increasing demand for actuaries, Sean Sequeira finds out what an actuary does and what it takes to be one ALAN CLEAVER, FLICKR

BEN SALTER, FLICKR

_CAREER WATCH

An actuary will work as an advisor to the decision-making process by taking into account the risks involved in making a decision and plotting a plausible path that the future may take in a financial capability.

WHAT ARE THE SKILLS NEEDED TO BE AN ACTUARY?

Apart from spending hours staring at books to prepare for exams, a person needs to have a few key professional skills as well as some personal traits that will help them be successful in their actuarial career. The professional skills rank as follows: • Specialised maths knowledge in calculus, statistics and probability • Keen analytical, project management and problem solving skills • Good business sense in finance, accounting and economics • Solid oral and written communication skills

MIKE BAIRD, FLICKR

The personal skills required for the job are: • Self-motivation • Creativity • Independence • Ability to work with others • Ambition You will also need to have a strong foundation in basic computer skills which will require you to formulate spreadsheets, operate statistical analysis programmes and work with programming languages.

WHAT FIELDS DOES AN ACTUARY WORK IN?

An actuary will work on problems in finance, risk management and product design to put their skills into effect in areas of insurance, pensions and investment. Recently, there is a need for actuaries in such fields as project management, banking and health care. The actuary will be responsible for designing and pricing products like insurance policies. They’ll also perform functions related to financial management and corporate planning. Actuaries are directly or indirectly involved in the overall management of insurance companies and pension, gratuity and other employee benefit funds schemes. They have important roles to play when it comes to drafting insurance and employee benefit schemes as well in governmentsponsored social insurance.

HOW DO I BECOME AN ACTUARY?

To become an actuary, you need to be a registered member of the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI).

In the initial stage, you need to have a minimum qualification of 10+2 to appear for the entrance exam which is called Actuarial Common Entrance Test (ACET). Upon clearing the entrance test, you can register with the IAI as a student member and appear for the actuarial examinations. To be classified as a Fellow member of the IAI, you need to clear a total of 15 subjects. You will also need a minimum of three years of relevant experience to be a qualified actuary.

WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE INDUSTRY AT THE MOMENT?

To find the answer to this question, we contacted accomplished actuary Mr Khushroo Dastur for an insider opinion: What opportunities lie ahead for someone starting as an actuary? Starting out as an actuarial student one does fairly routine work at first. Once hired, actuaries are encouraged to finish their examinations to attain an associate level designation first and then a fellowship (fully qualified) designation. Some fully qualified actuaries may rise to the top managerial jobs such as vice president. Others may take up roles in consultancies. Fully qualified actuaries are highly ranked with a great deal of responsibility. Salaries can vary widely especially depending on the qualification level and also experience. Actuaries are generally better paid within the industry compared to their peers in other fields. Which field of actuary do you see maximum growth in the near future? Traditionally actuaries worked in Life Insurance, General Insurance, Pensions or Health & Care with reinsurance being a part of each of these fields. More recently, the role of the actuary has widened to include roles in Finance & Investment, Enterprise Risk Management and Solvency II. More and more financial companies are

starting to realise the skill and value an actuary can add to the business and this is opening up doors within banks and other financial companies too. What advice would you give someone who is thinking of entering the profession? Try and pass the first few exams while in college. First, you'll be able to judge the difficulty level of these exams. Second, you'll be more fluent with the material, and third, because most employers now expect you to have passed a few exams when you apply. Try to continue passing exams quickly while working. It will help advance your career, give more flexibility with jobs/ assignments and you'll have less time for study later in life as responsibilities increase both at work and home. yi APRIL 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 29

_IN CONVERSATION

Exploring the Fearlessness of ACTUARIAL

SCIENCE

M KARUNANIDHI, PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTE OF ACTUARIES OF INDIA (IAI), DISCUSSES THE COURSE STRUCTURE AT THE INSTITUTE AND THE CURRENT AND FUTURE STATE OF THE ACTUARIAL PROFESSION has embraced more holistic risk management principles and that is paving application of actuarial skills in areas other than the traditional core insurance and pension disciplines.

How does Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) fair alongside other actuary associations around the world? The Institute’s actuarial qualification standards more than meets the minimum requirements to become an actuary outlined by the International Actuarial Association and well on par with a number of overseas actuarial professional bodies. The Indian actuarial qualifications are broadly recognized as being equivalent to that of UK and Australia. What are the ideal personality requirements for one who wants to become an actuary? Sound analytical bent of mind and good communication skills

What tips can you provide for someone who is planning on attempting the Actuarial Common Entrance Test (ACET)? The exam is sort of self evaluation to check if you possess the basic skill set to be able to pursue a career as an actuary. There is good quality study material and guidance available upon registration. How has the profession of actuaries changed in the last 10 or 20 years? The risk landscape has changed and become increasingly complex. The profession has greater recognition of the importance of interdiscipline interaction and the need to communicate the complex stuff in simple language. The profession

How does the course at IAI help students with the possible changes in the profession? The IAI curriculum is aligned to that of the UK actuarial profession. There is regular review of examination pattern and content. Specific work-shop based examinations on modelling, documentation and communication are some of the recent changes. What job opportunities can be expected for someone who becomes an actuary today? The average time span to full qualification is well over five years. Typically, students get employed as they progress through their exams in insurance companies, actuarial consulting firms and off-shored actuarial units. The actuarial skills travel well. So, opportunities exist both locally and internationally. Gaining practical work experience is as important as completing the exams. yi

f cowering behind computer screens and pretending to lord over the virtual world is your thing, then look no further! Presenting the place to confess and discuss your deepest desires, the college confessions page – now on Facebook. Stuff that was just confined to the school’s yearbooks, or in shuddering minds, has now made its way to cyberspace and in quite a rebellious fashion. Colleges and schools, unknown to themselves, have taken a fetish for these pages as soon as they were deemed ‘trending’ by the social media pundits. So how do you participate? Here is a picture-perfect way of going about it the way the tweens and teens, and all those refusing to step out of adolescence, pour out their feelings on Facebook, the anonymous way. _YOUTH ISSUES

LEVEL 1

Look around your college campus. Do you feel subjected to a lack of popularity or have a tiff which you can’t do much about? You still won’t be popular but you can plot a sinister plan to get back at the ones who you hate for some reason, and more importantly, the ones you hate for no reason. All it takes is a single post to get started. Alternatively, if you did something crazy within the college campus and no one knows about it, chances are that you want to tell the whole world but can’t risk getting thrown out of college. Here is your perfect opportunity to tell everyone your secret and still keep it your own.

LEVEL 2

You can say a prayer of thanks to the admin of your college’s confessions page. Never mind that the admin, when creating the page, had contrary ideas about its creation. Something on the lines that it would create a sene of nostalgia in the alumni and create some fun for collegians on Facebook. Instead, it has become a sort of public forum where you can rant and rave about everything that the college has done and denied its students. A few good souls may have a few better things to add about the institution but that’s disregarded. You see, the ‘anonymous’ tag usually brings out the worst in people.

LEVEL 3

As has been chronicled through the ages, right from Romeo to the current day roadside Romeos, asking a person out is hard, to put it mildly. Harder to explain is the logic behind asking out online by shouting it out on a public page. But being anonymous has

CONFESSIONS? GOOD OR BAD? Srinidhi Iyer, 18, FYBA student It’s the new ‘in’ thing and its fun to read a few of these confessions. But sometimes, it can become quite personal, turning into insulting or hurtful stuff. Percy Karat, 18, media student It’s good for those timid people who want to express their views or confess their feelings. It’s entertaining as long as it doesn’t go against you.

Phalin Shah, 19, social media professional It’s fun to an extent. Lately, a lot of my WhatsApp conversations have been centred on who likes whom and who b**ched what about someone. I feel these pages have made Facebook more interesting. You can discuss or laugh together over a confession. The virality will die soon; confessions will get boring but let’s enjoy the fun while it lasts!

Trupti Panicker, professor, Ruia College Personally, the idea of the confessions page is fantastic as each confession brings back the memories of our own college days. At the same time, people should exercise basic common sense when using the college’s name.

its perks. Gather the guts to tell them how you feel and you can continue to lament about the lovethat-never-was but feel good about getting it out of your system.

LEVEL 4

Now that you’re done patting yourself on the back for having submitted your post, it’s time to sit back and wait for the comments with the same level of eagerness that befits fooddeprived beings. In an attempt to soothe their egos, someone is bound to comment with their own perspective on the post, only to inspire some corresponding replies. Feel free to join in if you have anything to say, but if you don’t find the need to comment, simply grab a tub of your favourite popcorn and savour the fights. Facebookers with nothing more constructive to do are sure to draw other people into long discussions.

LEVEL 5

College’s reputation? Who cares? It’s not exactly opening Pandora’s Box when you say that you’ve made out or got drunk in your institute. But doing that in school and then washing your dirty linen in public won’t do any good for your college. You may love or hate it but the least you can do is not to leave its reputation in tatters. Stuff which is best described as an ‘open secret’ should be kept that way instead of being flagged on social media platforms. Let’s be honest people, we may not love everyone in college or school and that can’t be helped. But squabbling in public, ranting about your professors and ruining the prestige of your institution isn’t exactly the cool thing to do. Done in the right spirit and taken in that sense as well, these pages can be a hotspot for entertainment and joy. yi

_COUNSELLOR CONNECT

JAYANTI GHOSE

Jayanti Ghose is a career and education consultant. She holds an honours degree in economics and a degree in education. Her research in career counselling and guidance spans more than 25 years. She pioneered the concept of career counselling and career writing in the print media. She is actively involved in personal and group counselling.

SPORTS JOBS Q: What are the prominent career opportunities in sports? How can I choose the right one for myself ? Vinod Raut ANSWER ANSWER

There are several professional careers in sports, including being a sportsperson, athlete, coach, umpire/referee, commentator, sports reporter/ writer/journalist/photographer, or a sports manager handling the careers of professionals in various sporting avenues. You could also market sports events or be a sports event manager. You could manage sports venues/facilities, work for sports goods/equipment companies or a sports federation/ association, etc. You have to identify what type of work best suits your abilities, interests, and long-term goals while deciding where exactly in the sporting business you would like to work. You can then pick the courses and programmes you want to study accordingly.

Graduates may look for jobs in sales and marketing, customer services, handling inventory, etc. Assess what kind of work you could do best and look for such jobs. Generally, luxury stores and businesses hire employees with experience in handling high-end clients or in sales and marketing, managing inventory, visual merchandising, etc. Hence, you could look for jobs in the function that suits your personality in any industry or segment, or any job in luxury stores and services. MBA (marketing/fashion/ retail) from a reputed business school in India or a specialised MBA in luxury brand management/ luxury and retail or equivalent from abroad could be a long-term goal.

A good Statement of Purpose or SoP may not guarantee admission to the course and college of your choice, but a poorly crafted one will most certainly ensure your application package is headed towards the ‘reject’ pile. The SoP is often a difficult and painful part of the application process for most students, one that is put off till the last possible moment. The SoP is a crucial element of your overall application that should not be taken lightly. It is your chance to “sell” yourself to the admissions committee. Along with the necessary letters of recommendation, academic transcripts and test scores, it plays a significant role in determining your admission as well as financial aid. Why do you want to study a particular course? What have you already achieved and what kind of person are you? Naturally then, it demands the time, effort and attention on par with other aspects of your application. So what do you write? More importantly, what do they want to read? Most admission officers look for signs that you’ve challenged yourself by taking honours courses or doing extra project work and that you are really passionate about studying the subject. Extracurricular achievements and social service also rank high on their list. This info can be gleaned from the other forms you fill, but the essay allows you to flesh out the details and paint a picture of you, the person. Essay anxiety is common and natural, but here’s a word of advice: Don’t let someone else to do your essay because you ‘can’t write’ or ‘don’t know what to write’. Avoid the temptation to just adapt a senior’s essay. Admission officers aren’t dumb – they go through thousands of applications and can smell a rat from a distance. Your SoP must be reflective of you. Write out your SoP in your own voice and then show it to a friend,

teacher or parent – they may suggest some style and grammar changes. Concentrate on substance rather than trying to dazzle them with your style, wit, intellect or humour. This is one portion of the application that you get to control completely. Look at it as an opportunity rather than as an ordeal. It is your chance to reveal the dimensions of your personality that make you special. It’s also an opportunity to make you pause and think and understand your own motivations and goals. Be truthful. It’s pointless making things up because they sound good; if you can’t say why you’re attracted to a subject or certain courses and you haven’t read the relevant books, are you sure you want to study the subject at degree level? Honest self-questioning now could save you much heartache and expense later. Get creative. Remember: your application will be one among hundreds if not thousands that are reviewed, so you need to catch the eye of weary admissions committee members snowed under a huge pile of applications. Explain why you want to study the subject at that particular university. It needs to be a better reason than your having heard that student nightlife is good or because your aunt lives nearby. Study the course options and modules and mention them in your personal statement. As a general rule, two-thirds of this should cover the course and university you’re applying for and the remaining third should be about extracurricular interests such as music or programming. Mention work experience if you have had any, and don’t forget other skills such as IT, numeracy and teamwork. Be direct and persuasive. Avoid spelling mistakes and bad grammar. Get somebody reliable to proof-read your submission for you. Try to write naturally and avoid pretentious long words and jargon. Quick pointers: Don’t start every sentence with “I” and don’t try to be funny – you know nothing about the admissions tutor’s sense of humour.

Canteen food is NOT meant for eating. What canteen folks describe as ‘Chinese’ actually tastes like a cross between cough medicine & stale meat. Consider yourself warned!

Hasina Khatib explains the pains of college life which you are not warned about before starting

As a cardinal rule, never go for a rock concert. The chances of getting out alive are slim. This point is null and void if you are a guy in which case you are probably inherently programmed to risk spinal injury the instant Led Zeppelin starts playing. However, before you oblige the mosh pit with your full and undivided attention, give us a headsup and we’ll have a first aid team dogging your steps.

Clerks & cashiers are a different species altogether. They stare, they glare, they insult. Spend too much time scrambling about for receipts or fishing out change and you’re dead meat.

Attendance registers have the power to change lives. The penalty for not making it there regularly includes protracted yelling matches, indefinite grounding and in some extreme cases, internals in jeopardy. Shudder!

To prove your mettle as a normal, sane student you are fully expected to ditch a couple of internal tests. Now, of course, if you are the type who scores a minimum of 18/20 in all tests, even the surprise ones, we request you to stay on your guard. Chatur Inc For Shamefully Brainy Students should have a recruitment offer for you before you’re done reading this piece.

Watchmen have a weird fetish for identity cards. Come hell or high water, they simple do NOT allow you to enter without that tiny 10 inches of low-quality plastic slung around your neck. Given the number of deadened terrorists blowing up half-empty college buildings that these watchmen encounter on a daily basis, we get their point. Not.

India’s Squash Sensation Your mother captained the Indian women’s cricket team and your grandmother was a state level athlete – was that an important factor in your career choice? At home, we were never allowed to just sit and watch TV; we had to go out and play sport. I dabbled in a lot of sports, from basketball to field events to tennis. Playing a sport was a part of my growing years. So when I took up squash my family supported me regardless of how tough it was going to be to make squash a career since it’s not amongst the “elite” sports of India. Since it is not a popular sport, what lead you to pursue squash over tennis and badminton? I loved the game as soon as I stepped on the court, and my family has been instrumental in getting me to where I am today. I had to fund myself for the first five years when I was training in a different country. It was tough to make a career out of the game, but I was doing it because I loved the game. I think squash deserves as much recognition as tennis and badminton. At the age of 14, you moved to Egypt. What was the reason for this move? What difficulties did you face training in a foreign country? It was a combination of a number of reasons. I didn’t get along with the Indian federation during those years so I had no place to train and decided

to leave for Egypt. Egypt was home for me for four years. It was tough staying away from family and friends and not having a “normal” life for someone my age. At 14, I had to stay alone in an apartment, clean the house, cook, and do things a normal 14-year-old wouldn’t usually be compelled to do. However, it did make me a stronger and more mature person. Being a sportsperson requires hard work, discipline and long training hours. Did that affect your social life as a teenager? I never really had a life as a teenager. Although I did make it a point to go out with friends to unwind, it was once a month on average. I was either training most of the day or on flights travelling from one continent to another. But I guess you have to sacrifice a lot to be a top athlete and I have no regrets whatsoever. How much do you train in a day? I train six days a week for about six hours every day. My regimen also includes going to the gym and/or running pretty much on a daily basis, over and above training for squash. You like reading and have mentioned the autobiographies of Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal as your favourite books. Do you see yourself penning your career on paper?

DIPIKA PALLIKAL, THE FIRST INDIAN TO BREAK INTO THE TOP 10 OF WOMEN’S SQUASH WORLD RANKINGS, TELLS US ABOUT HER PATH SO FAR AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

It takes a lot of time and concentration to write a book and I can’t afford to put aside time and, more importantly, my focus at the moment. I would love to share my story, so will definitely do so if and when I get the time. Are you pursuing any academic qualification at the moment? I’m in my last year of college; pursuing a degree in English literature. My college has been very supportive of the fact that I live outside India an average of 10 months a year. So whenever I am in the country, I take my exams and attend lectures.

You were world no. 1 in the under-19 category. How difficult has the switch to the senior category been? It is always a different atmosphere when you shift to the senior category, as it is a lot tougher. In fact, it took me a few years to get used to the senior circuit. But I love it now. I have friends and I’m always travelling for tournaments. It’s great. I’m only 21 and I have a lot to look forward to.

I’ve been lucky to have had some great results, exposure and experiences at such a young age and I hope I carry on and make it to the world’s #1 one day! Squash hasn’t been a much celebrated sport in India and remains excluded from the Olympics. How do you plan on changing this? I hope we win the bid and get to be part of the 2020 Olympics. It is every athlete’s dream to win an Olympic medal, and mine isn’t any different. I think our sport deserves to be up there with all the other sports. You’ve been in headlines for your sporting successes as well as your stunning looks. Do you have any modelling or acting aspirations? Right now, all I’m thinking of is squash. I have got movie offers but I don’t have the time to think of any of them. My goals are set and I’m focused solely on achieving my goals. Any advice for budding squash players in the country?

I think it is important to remember that success and failure are a part of every athlete’s career. It’s important to take the losses in a good way and work towards the positives. I believe, to get up, you have to fail once in a while. That’s what teaches you how to win matches. I think, in order to be successful at anything, it’s important to be able to see the failures and rise up from them. As long as you enjoy and love what you are doing, nothing can stop you from reaching your goal. yi APRIL 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 39

An

opus called

opera

Media student Frazan Adil Kotwal lets us into the fascinating world of opera music, confessing that his dream is to be ‘the first great Zoroastrian singer of the classical world’

It’s an unusual choice in India to be an opera singer. What lead you in that direction? Yes, it is indeed a very unusual choice, especially for a 19-yearold BMM [Bachelor of Mass Media] student who is also a Parsi priest! I have always been fascinated by opera as a child, but ever since I shifted to Mumbai I discovered there is a small but growing crowd [of opera lovers] here. I happened to meet Patricia Rozario (a world renowned opera singer) who heard me and encouraged me to sing in the operas at the NCPA [National Centre for Performing Arts], that was my first tryst

Arpeggio with Frazan Frazan in 5 years will be: still studying and also will be performing side-by-side. Although if it’s 10 years, then the first great Zoroastrian singer of the classical world.

If you were a song, which one would you be? Silent noon by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Hindi – Aao milo chalein from Jab We Met

Favourite musician, living or dead: Sarah Brightman FLICKR USER JOHANFERREIRA15

Dream role to play on stage: Turridu from Cavalleria Rusticana and Beppe or Canio from Pagliacci, as those are the first operas I had sung in. with live opera, the irony being that I have never seen a live performance but have sung in one. But as soon as I got on that stage I knew for sure that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life and after that I have been performing every 3 to 4 months with orchestras like the Bombay Chamber Orchestra. I also had the undying support of my college Jai Hind and my BMM co-ordinator Dr Varalakshmi without which I wouldn’t have been able to be a part of any of these productions. When did you realise that you have a gift for music? I always considered myself as a performing artist; ever since I was a toddler I used to take part in all the plays and choirs. Singing was what I connected to the most and felt happiest when I was singing for others. I started learning the piano and used to compose my own tunes and soon took up the violin and just practised very hard. It’s also a lot of hard work and dedication.

Any contemporary story (film/book/ play) that you think would make a great opera for India: I think most Yash Raj and Karan Johar films like DDLJ and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham

How many musical instruments do you play? How easy/difficult do you find switching from one to another? Well, violin is my primary instrument. I also play the viola, cello, harmonica and a spattering of piano. I don’t find it difficult at all switching between instruments as all I need to do is focus and all the practice pays off.

that they don’t enjoy opera because they don’t understand the language and the music. To everyone out there I say, it’s not only about the language but you should be able to sit back relax and enjoy and “feel” the music and interpret it in your own way. You only enjoy the whole experience once you surrender yourself completely.

If you could be part of any international music-based project (orchestra, opera, musical, etc) which one would it be? For opera I would love to be a part of a big scale production like Aida or Parsifal or Die Zauberflote. The sheer magnitude of these productions always send chills down my spine and just watching them on screen gives me the inspiration to work harder.

Since you dabble in theatre, do you have aspirations to move to Bollywood? Opera is just like Bollywood – full of drama! Yes, when the right opportunities present itself I will definitely consider them. But as of now my focus is performing on stage, there's nothing quite like that feeling.

For someone untrained in opera music, what is the best way to enjoy an opera? Is it about the emotion and the voice or the story and the characters? Almost all my friends and family say

Speaking of Bollywood, what is your opinion on Bollywood music? Do you cringe when you go to a club and hear, say, ‘Sheela ki jawani’? Oh no, not at all! I appreciate all genres of music and try and appreciate them too. When I hear Sheela ki jawani I don’t cringe, I dance. yi APRIL 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 41

_RELATIONSHIPS

SHE’S UNINHIBITED, SHE’S ADVENTUROUS, SHE’S SEXY AND SHE KNOWS IT. RAZI SHAIKH EXPLORES THE LURE OF THE ‘BAD GIRL’ AND WHY MEN FALL FOR HER TIME AND AGAIN

W

e celebrate the idea of this specimen of womankind in films and books alike. Men love her; women secretly wish to let out their wild side to be the bad girl. The bad girl is the one who breaks the norms and sets herself free. Someone who is wild and has no particular love for the status quo. Someone who is all about experimenting. Wild, crazy, unpredictable, you say the words for her and they’ll fill this page. But that’s not the point. Question is what makes her click for the guys?

Bad Girl you say? Rutika Yeolekar, a mass media student says, “The things which are hard to get are the ones that are most desirable. Most guys desire and lust for girls in a sexual way. What happens if the girl turns the tables, uses the guy and walks away like nothing happened? That’s when the girl throws an open challenge to the guy’s psyche of girls being vulnerable.”

 THE INDIAN JUGAAD

No household is complete without stories of the father having a crush on a college hottie. You’ll be forgiven for

thinking why that hottie didn’t land up with your father. Blame it on the Indian psyche of having fun; living the moment with the bad girl and in the end, settling for the girl who will manage the house with limited candour, lesser troubles and more of agreement than disagreements. Very far from the notion of the bad girl. Thankfully, times are changing. The modern-day man who is modern in the real sense will be more than willing to accept the bad girl as his spouse, provided the other nuts and bolts of the relationship work out fine.

56 Youth Incorporated ║ APRIL 2013

22-03-2013 14:26:00

‘There are no good girls gone wrong, just bad girls found out.’ > MAE WEST, late Hollywood actress TO HANDLE THE

‘BAD GIRL’

Pining for her openly isn’t going to help you one bit. Play it out slowly. Patience – required to deal with every girl but this one demands it all the more. Balance the egos. Not just hers, yours as well. Be a sport. Your joyride will go haywire if you refuse to jump on the fun bandwagon. Get serious, only if the relationship starts going that way.

 THE POWER GAME

Yes, men like to be the one in charge. They like to be the one calling the shots in a relationship most of the time, but a change in routine doesn’t necessarily turn them off. Instead, a man will certainly be aroused if he sees his partner taking charge of things (not in bed alone!). Nothing arouses a man more than seeing a confident female. This, however, doesn’t apply to the entire breed of men. You can find that this quest for a power-centric woman is mostly limited to guys who are looking for an adventure – those

looking for something other than the run-of-the-mill kind of girl. Echoing that sentiment, Aditya Raste, an engineering student says, “What guys will always like about girls is looks. At the same time, intellect and attitude of the girl matter. A rebellious nature attracts a guy as it signals an air of confidence and independence.”

 OUT OF THE ORDINARY

Ever heard that variety is the spice of life? Old phrases apart, this statement goes both for the guy and the girl in our equation. The guy on his part would love nothing more than a girl who has a wild side and doesn’t shy from showing it. For the guy, falling in love with a girl who stands out in the crowd is but inevitable. Every time he goes out with her, everything from her obvious confidence to her sexy figure will make others go green with envy. At the same time, one would do

well to remember that handling her won’t be the easiest of affairs. You can expect some rough bumps on the way; you’ll be at your wits end on some days on how to deal with her. Most of all, the dream of a long-lasting relationship from day one will be shattered for the guy because there’s not much to ride on the hope that it’ll actually happen.

MEN JUST WANT ONE THING

A conversation about this topic among a group of male friends brought one word to everyone’s lips. Sex. Sex figures in the universal statement that is used to describe a man and it is based on a kernel of truth. Body language guru Allan Pease’s book Why Men Want Sex and Women Need Love has a title that most ladies swear by. The bad girl knows this best and, instead of preaching on the virtues of love, makes the most of of her man’s wishes. No, we’re not implying a bad girl is your ticket to quick sex in any way. But we can say that if nothing else, she’ll make the ride a lot more interesting.

 MORALITY BE DAMNED

Damned, for the simple reason that morality isn’t part of the picture here. Yes, mainstream Bollywood would like us to believe otherwise but the idea of a bad girl isn’t based on what’s right and wrong but what works for her. If she makes a guy go weak in his knees, it’s as much for the promise of having an adventure ahead in his life as for the prospect of having a partner who is strong enough to separate her from the rest. She’s smart, she plays around and she has her vices too, but in the end, she draws the men’s attention. If it works for the guy, he would accept his girl, in all her avatars. At the end of the day, it’s not about her being good or bad. It’s about the girl, for she is who she chooses to be. yi APRIL 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 57

What’s in a Catchphrase?

FLICKR USER SPADGE6868

The Small Screen

Television has always been one of the biggest contributors to our catchphrase lingo. A certain epic show called Friends gave us the popular catchphrase/pick up line How you doin’ while How I Met Your Mother has taught us to be Legend-wait for it-dary. We have also picked up Bazinga from The Big Bang Theory which we tend to use in day-to-day life, just for fun. But, thankfully, not a lot of people caught on to Donald Trump’s You’re fired! or Paris Hilton’s That’s hot. Indian television also has some cool catchphrases, particularly ACP Pradyuman’s Kuch toh gadbad hain and Daya, darwazaa tod do in the hilariously serious tv show CID, as well as Bas,

Hansa, bas and Bade log, bade log from the popular comedy show Khichdi.

The Big Screen

Where to start? There have been so many dialogues that it becomes difficult to restrict the list to just a few. I definitely remember Jim Carrey teaching us to spell in Bruce Almighty with his constant uttering of B-e-a-utiful. Sometimes a simple

onestly, I can’t quite remember the very first catchphrase I heard. In fact, when I think about it, the oldest I can recount from memory would be back in the day when I watched cartoons and drank milk that was forced on me, mixed with chocolate flavoured supplements. I’m not sure if anyone else remembers it, but Scrappy from the Scooby-Doo cartoon series yelling “Ta dadada ta daa! Puppy Power!” is etched in my

memory. What the hell is ‘puppy power’ anyway? Does that phrase actually mean anything? But I think that sums up our topic. A catchphrase doesn’t really have to make any sense; it’s just something uttered by a character, or real person, which they may repeat over and over again in a particular way that it eventually makes it to popular lexicon. Simple as that.

GEOFFREY CHANDLER, FLICKR

As we continue to be bombarded by information in our day-to-day lives, Sean Sequeira slows down to look at and savour the best catchphrases of the 21st century

dialogue in a movie becomes a popular catchphrase with constant use in daily life. Many such examples can be found in the latest Batman trilogy – consider the lines I’m Batman and Why so serious? Other examples would be This is Sparta! from 300, and Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder saying You went full retard, man. Never go full retard, both of which have become popular from repeated use. Even Gangs of Wasseypur can be cited as a contributor to popular culture with its catchphrase-worthy line Keh ke lenge uski.

Advertising jargon

Advertising is definitely a big contributor. Sometimes a jingle or a tagline takes off virally and friends keep telling each other to Just do it. Why? Apparently, Because you’re worth it. Advertising aims for the viral, since it’s the best way to sell their brand; thanks to this ideology we have Thanda matlab Coca Cola. Nowadays, friends keep telling each

Whatcha talkin 'bout?

FRED HSU, FLICKR

Oh yes! Politics doesn’t like to fall behind on anything, does it? Catchphrases can always be heard when it comes to politicians and their campaigning. The world was in awe whenever Barack Obama said Yes, we can. But when our Indian counterparts had their go at the wheel, India Rising became more of a joke than a positive slogan. Although it might be a little out of the political league, I would like to add Arnab Goswami’s The nation wants to know in this category, considering how many politicians have had it yelled at them.

It seems like no list could ever be complete without the Internet contributing in some way. The Internet has become a place for inventing and dropping catchphrases, especially after the bombardment of memes. People saying Bi*ch Please, Like a boss and Haters gonna hate has became popular after everyone read it on the internet. But I’m still waiting for the day Indians will start fights by saying Come at me bro.

A catchphrase doesn’t even have to start in the media to pick up in popular parlance. Saying What’s the plan? and Cheers have become commonplace after someone, somewhere on the planet first said it and everyone started using it. And while That’s what she said was actually first referenced in the movie Wayne’s World, I reckon it has picked up its catchphrase status only from common use in the last few years. yi

When does a catchphrase come to your aid?

YOUR

VOICE Renita D ilva, 21 (social m’S e d executive ia )

I like making up my own catchphrases. Once, I had a fight with a friend, and when we had cooled off, I said “Let’s hug it out b**ch”. It was funny, we laughed and forgot about the fight. I used that for months before it wasn’t funny anymore.

Andre Fernando, 22mer) (computer program I loved Samuel L Jackson’s character in Pulp Fiction when I saw the movie for the first time. I liked the way he talked, his dialogues and everything, and since then I have picked up one of his lines which has become a personal catchphrase I keep repeating to myself. Whenever I find myself getting stressed out or angry, I just tell myself “Be cool, b**ch”. It’s kind of funny so I manage to chill out quickly.

For someone who visits 9GAG more than Facebook, ‘If you know what I mean’ is a hard to put down expression! The phrase, now synonymous with Rowan Atkinson’s face, is meant for the use of those whose imagination stretches beyond the ordinary, if you know what I mean!

Vinay Gholap, 21 (media student) Having grown up watching the Star Wars films, the line “May the force be with you” stuck with my friend group. We use it in the same context as best wishes, for instance a journey or an exam or any other task. Once, our friend set out to approach a girl and we told him the same thing, “May the force be with you!”

22 Royce Noronhac, utive) (marketing exe My favourite television character is Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother. I don’t get a chance to quote him often but I remember one occasion where I was going to a costume party. A friend and I decided to dress up as superheroes. My friend was really nervous because he thought no one else would actually dress for it. I was dressed in my costume, went over to his house before the party and when he opened the door, I stuck my chest out and said, “Suit up”!

Un-branding

_POINT OF VIEW

“F fashion

ashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months,” said Oscar Wilde, and wouldn’t you agree when you see society ladies with bulges and protrusions in all nonrequired places at ‘fashionable’ soirees strutting designer labels meant for an entirely different body type with all the bliss of feeling that they are immensely ‘right’ on the fashion front. What doesn’t seem to count is appropriateness, comfort, or the fact that an outfit must be right for the figure and age, but of paramount importance is the desire to don a ‘brand’ and be socially acceptable.

DESIGNER HORRORS

Brands and style are not synonymous as many believe; style comes with a good dash of self assurance, says Nisha JamVwal

watching the pageant. The glitter and sequins were out of place and the outlandish cuts did not look like skirts, lehengas or gowns but some confused mix. Why would the designer kill a graceful sari with so much embellishment for an officers’ ball at a formal colonial club? Their bad diction only managed to subtract more elegance from the ladies. The content was inane, but all said and done, the fervour with which the girls came to win the crown carried them through; three girls finally made it to the Navy Queen and the runners up.

WHEN COOL IS UNCOOL

I also cringe when jeans go way below the derriere, and when the trousers reach the ankles. I must admit I have to fight away the desire to go and yank it up in order not to tempt fate. Is it so important to be ‘cool’ that you really forget the importance of all else in view of that one state of being? As much as fashion has been a magnet for some, it has always undergone palpable disdain from certain others. While I would not reject a creation by some of the more inspired thinking designers, fashion is something that must speak about YOU… a signature that makes one stand apart. Not because of ‘whom’ you are wearing, but how you’ve put it together to enhance your personal feeling – an identity, not a clone! My take is this: don’t be slaves to brands, instead enjoy dressing for you. Don’t blindly follow trends but dress appropriate for an occasion. Try not to bow to that herd mentality ‘cool’. Attempt that sense of well being that comes with being comfortable in your skin – no, that does not mean frumpy grunge; it means sharp, professional, making the impact of someone who is with it but without trying too hard and being someone you are not. It means making an impression without shouting out aloud. yi

Whatever happened to the joy of wearing a great designer for the admiration of his cut, style and signature than to prove a point to the paparazzi and society at large? Part of India is still so nascent in its mingling with the big designer labels, even though big brands are begging to make a foray into our luxury malls. We need to enjoy the look, feel and philosophy of a designer for our own experience than becoming fashion victims ‘branded’ for life. As for me, I see clothes as an experimental adventure created for me – a woman who does not conform to accepted norms of age and ‘beauty’. I endeavour to retain the free spirit of the person I am, one who strides over barriers of narrow traditionalism and preconceived confining notions of feminine, masculine and ‘branded’. As a judge for the Navy Ball a couple of weeks ago, I worried about the fashion interpretations of the youth today when I saw the ladies pirouetting on stage. If you can call what they were wearing fashion, that is. When I see what the ‘designers’ churn out in the name of fashion, I shudder, especially at the OTT bridal outpourings that the unsuspecting Navy Queen aspirants had adorned. Listening to Hookah Bar on your mobile phone is not a crime, but subjecting those around you to the same agony is certainly one. Unfortunately, some people love taking on the role of ‘public DJs’ by playing music on their phone speakers in public places. And by some twisted stroke of luck, the more unbearable the song playing around you, the greater seems to be the volume capacity of the speakers. Punishment: Wearing headphones 24 hours a day for an entire month listening to nothing but Justin Bieber. That should help these culprits understand the hazardous effects of their listenig habits.

SAYING ‘BABES’

“Babes, can you please pass me that phone?” No matter how sweetly a girl says it or how strange her accent is, ‘babes’ will always be a word that sounds condescending. And it is grammatically incorrect. Babe – singular, babes – plural. We’re sure there must be less annoying ways of being a ditsy blonde. Punishment: No wearing pink or straightening your hair for a year.

7

Motorists, undisciplined as they might be, are still accountable for breaking any traffic regulation. However, some pedestrians take greater risks than the most adventurous speed demon by sprinting across the road despite there being moving traffic, sometimes even sauntering across the road while vehicles come to a screeching halt. Punishment: Being a pedestrian in Indian cities is punishment enough. We just want them to be more cautious.

LOUD MUNCHING

CARELESS PEDESTRIANS

Sharing a meal with a person who makes loud munching sounds while eating can easily be used as a cruel torture method. A sloppy, loud eater can make the most disciplined, tolerant monk lose his cool (along with his appetite) by his monstrous eating habits. Arresting loud, disgusting eaters is probably a significant step towards attaining world peace. Punishment: Liquid diet for 6 months.

BRINGING INFANTS TO MOVIE HALLS

Children are generally adorable, in photographs, at large family gatherings, in the park, etc. But the one place when most infants transform into the little devil Damien from The Omen is at movie halls. They wait for the most engaging point in the film to unleash their loud, uncontrollable wails. And if the children are slightly older, they yell out a series of unending questions at their parents. Punishment: House arrest till these children turn 18.

ENDORSEMENTS BY AMITABH BACHCHAN

“Hi baby, I had such a nice time yesterday. I love you! Forever!” You would think this is a personal message exchange between lovers. Well, it’s not. It’s one of the many mushy post exchanges that couples make public on their Facebook pages and unfortunately feature on our news feeds. Couples today are quite innovative with their PDA: joint Facebook accounts, profile pictures displaying 101 ways to cuddle and hourly wall post exchanges. Let’s hope couples tire of such mawkish displays and return to regular nauseating activities like snogging on Juhu beach. Keep it off our Facebook pages, guys. Punishment: Banned from social media sites till their relationship ends.

APPLE UPGRADES

PHOTO EDITING ADDICTION

You can be sure that any image you see on social networking sites has passed through Instagram, Aviary, Hipstamatic, Snapseed and several other popular photo editing apps. There is no harm in adding filters and enhancing the colour of images but lately images are being processed multiple times until skies turn pink and the colour of the sea looks purple. Even Life of Pi didn’t use as many special effects! After all, we wouldn’t want unrealistic photography to dampen the beauty of reality, would we? Punishment: Only black and white photography allowed for the rest of your life. KYLEM, FLICKR

BOLLYWOOD HUNGAMA

Celebrities will endure any form of public humiliation in order to secure an endorsement deal. And one can safely assume Amitabh Bachchan’s Gujarat tourism campaign will be remembered as some of the ‘most horrifying moments in advertising history.’ A 70-year-old man rapping about the cultural beauty of Gujarat is almost as intolerable as Priyanka Chopra’s album. We propose a retirement age for endorsements; just to protect the elderly from the consequences of such senile decisions. Punishment: For every new endorsement deal signed, one of his precious gemstone rings will be confiscated.

Ah, the thrill of owning the latest Apple gadget! You gleefully unpack your new iPhone 5, after finally saving enough money (and that’s a lot of saving) for the purchase. But you soon realise that one can never keep up with the frequent Apple ‘innovations’ when Apple announces the launch date of the iPhone 5S the next morning. No matter how much hard earned money you blow, Apple will always make you feel outdated – either you don’t have the new design, the new colour or the new operating system! When art meets FASHION... AARTI VERMA, FOUNDER OF THE LABEL ART MEETS FASHION, TALKS TO YOUTH INC ABOUT THE ETHNIC INSPIRATION BEHIND HER HANDMADE WORK IN BAGS, JEWELLERY AND HOME DECOR Tell us a little about yourself. I am a 27-year-old designer from Mumbai, passionate about Indian art and craft. I love painting on fabric, making ceramic jewellery, travelling, photography, and also doodling at times. I also do some freelance illustrations. I am closely associated with a Delhi-based NGO called Protsahan as the creative head. How did Art meets Fashion begin? Art meets Fashion was started in September 2010. It’s an amalgamation of art and fashion, a fusion of contemporary and traditional... I have done an art teacher diploma from Sir JJ School of Art and have worked as an art and craft teacher for a year. While working in school, I was fascinated by a colleague’s collection of ethnic jewellery and that inspired me to experiment with different mediums. I started making jewellery with M-Seal and then paper mache and got an amazing response for the designs I made. Why the name ‘Art meets Fashion’? All our designs are handpainted and handcrafted. Also, I come from an art and fashion background. Art and fashion being my twin passions, I wanted to start something which holds equal love for both. Since your work is so rooted in ethnic Indian art, do you involve local artisans and craftsmen?

Use a dry shampoo, which is like a hair spray and can add life to greasy hair. All you need to do is part your hair in separate sections and spray the shampoo on your roots. This absorbs the excess oil in your scalp and saves you time. But this is no replacement for shampooing; save it only for emergencies.

MY HAIR IS A FRIZZY MESS! Humidity, frequent hair treatments and windy auto rickshaw rides all contribute towards the deadly frizz. A few drops of ‘magical Moroccan oil’ works wonders for last minute frizz control.

THERE’S AN OIL SPILL ON MY FACE! Using an astringent is a necessary beauty treatment for oily skin. However, Garnier overuse could make your skin dry and Fructis flaky so use it sparingly. Also, carry Sleek & Shine blotting paper in your bag. Quick trips Moroccan to the washroom to soak the extra oil Oil `250 will reduce the shine on your face.

For guys, it should be effortless; something comfortable is always the best. Also, you shouldn’t copy anyone; make your own style statement. For girls, I think dressing up well and using light makeup is the best.

FIGHTING THE UV RAYS

Sun emits two kinds of UV rays, Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB). Both these rays play a different role on skin. UVA rays cause your skin to wrinkle and age faster (UVA = aging) while UVB rays cause your skin to tan and sunburn (UVB = burning). DELHI DAREDEVILS VS. KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

IPL 6 kicks off with a match between the two teams at the iconic Eden Gardens. For the KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir, it will be a match against his hometown and his former team, where he opened alongside Virender Sehwag. Over the past few seasons, Kolkata has gained steam, summing it up with an emphatic win in the IPL final last year. Delhi, on the other hand, hasn’t been up to the mark.

OUR TAKE:

Considering its current crop of players, we expect KKR to keep up the momentum and get the better of their Delhi counterparts.

DALE STEYN VS. SACHIN TENDULKAR

The Hyderabad team, newly bought and renamed as Sunrisers Hyderabad, will take comfort from the fact that they have a fast bowler in their arsenal that’s known as much for his speed as for the lethal accuracy of his deliveries. Dale Steyn is the world’s deadliest fast bowler as of now but facing up to the greatest batsman of the modern age will be a different ball game altogether. Keep an eye open for this contest as it promises to be a cracker!

OUR TAKE: If the pitch doesn’t favour him, Steyn will have to take cover against the Mumbaikar.

PUNE WARRIORS INDIA VS. MUMBAI INDIANS

This won’t just be a contest between two teams from Maharashtra. It’ll be a clash between an ex-Aussie skipper and the current one. It will be a battle in which Yuvraj Singh will lock horns with his paaji, Sachin. A clash in which Angelo Mathews will try to outdo his Lankan mate Lasith Malinga. The two star studded teams will ensure that you will be hooked onto your TV till the very last ball is bowled.

OUR TAKE: Considering that Pune are still

finding their feet in the IPL, we feel that the scales will tip in the favour of the Mumbai Indians.

ADAM GILCHRIST VS. M S DHONI

OUR TAKE:

Considering Dhoni’s prolific record in India, there are strong chances that he’ll be the one taking the cake and the cherry in this encounter.

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS USER BLNGUYEN

The Indian captain once confessed to holding Gilchrist as his favourite wicket keeper and role model. In style of play, they have a stark resemblance in their reliability behind the wickets as well as in the manner in which they smash bowlers for runs. Both are also captains of their respective teams. When they clash on the cricket field, entertainment is guaranteed, with the result going in the way of the captain who leads from the front.

IRFAN PATHAN VS. YUSUF PATHAN

This is as much a tale of two brothers competing in the field as of two all-rounders possessing some awesome cricketing skills. Either Irfan bowls and gets Yusuf’s wicket. Or the vice versa occurs. This time, it won’t just divide their family but the overall fan base in the world as they clash in the very first match of IPL 6.

OUR TAKE:

One can never rule out the talismanic Yusuf but considering their recent forms, we favour Irfan to outdo his elder brother. yi

Rating: 

OVERVIEW: Action, game-play, fire and plunder, guns of the past along with breath-taking modifications add a dimension not conceivably attributed to the Borderlands brand, rendering it a must-have. Your vision of weaponry comes alive, spurting acid, missiles, and multiple grenades PLOT: Pandora continues as do you, the secret vault-hunter. Not the best plot, but brewed with humour and unforgettable characters. The adversary, Handsome Jack, rules, even though Claptrap and Scooter are enhanced in the new format. Commando, Siren, Gunzerker, or Assassin – you choose your player. GAMEPLAY: Oddly, menus are packed closely, on a PC packed with pixel strength. Combat is powerful, continual, and terminates in rubbish scattered through the combat zone. You find yourself overseeing your strengths, putting appropriate ones to use. A way to earn a key in-game would have been appreciated. The four modules come with extraordinary capabilities. Implementation has a lasting impression, Gearbox achieving its objective, if this was intended. Effortlessly include whichever Steam friends you want, making the game in progress more captivating; or link up with gamers who equate your level. Pillage is divisible among squad mates, just as you please. Polished and finished to the core, race into the more difficult levels. Defeated adversaries create pools of blood, while elements blow up persistently and the battleground is strewn with fragmented reminders of the violence that transpired. PhysX manages to impress in appearance, and makes wanting worthy. FINAL VERDICT: Borderlands 2 is overwhelmingly laced, yet deficient in some parts, making it an irritation, at times. An amusement of continuing interest; with True Vault Hunter mode for the most hardcore player, and online co-op, this game will have us glued for quite some time in the future.

BARRY TROTTER AND THE SHAMELESS PARODY

Timed with the release of Amish’s final book in the Shiva trilogy, the Vayuputras music album comprises 11 tracks, each depicting a different part of the story. Although a devotional album, the big names on the cover and the large number of Amish fans will ensure that this album has a larger audience. The opening track is Taufiq Qureshi’s haunting Shiva Trilogy Theme, and is the highlight. The delightful rendition of the flute leaves the listeners wanting more. Bhadra Bam Bole is also a theme song, lasting music for around three-and-a-half minutes. Jawaab Do Prabhu is a bhajan while Kashi to Panchavati is an engaging and soulful instrumental track. Bikram Ghosh’s Nataraj – Lord of Dance sees the composer mixing the sitar and tabla beautifully. Each track adds a different flavour to the album and will leave listeners spellbound.

Read the adventures of Barry Trotter and his two friends, Lon Measly and Ermine Cringer, at Hogwash School for Wizardry and Witchcrap. Barry is 22-years-old and will probably never leave Hogwash because G.K. Rollin’s books about him have made him rich. Hollywood then decides to make Rollin’s book into a movie and Barry and his friends are worried about the commercialisation of his tale, so Barry and Bumblemore hatch a plan to stop film production. QUICK FIRE WITH SANDEEP DAS Chetan Bhagat really did open Pandora’s box. In the wake of his success, IIT and IIM graduates have been churning out books. An IIM graduate, Sandeep Das’ Yours Sarcastically is, in spirit, a cousin of Bhagat’s Five Point Someone. The book is narrated by its protagonist, Nikhil, as he lives through business school and the pressures of his first job. Fans of Bhagat will instantly notice the similarities not just in the novel’s setting (yet another premier Indian campus few have the privilege of experiencing) but also in the style it is written – the book is peppered with jokes and plenty of conversational dialogue in ‘Indian English’. There is another similarity too – both Bhagat’s and Das’ works are no literary gems. In Yours Sarcastically, characters appear and disappear with no prelude or explanations while the story zooms ahead with poor descriptive writing, which makes for a tiresome reading experience. If you are, however, a Chetan Bhagat fan, you will forgive all these trangressions and find this book entertaining. Since you’re an IIM graduate, how much of your book should we take with a pinch of salt and how much of it should we believe in? Although Yours Sarcastically is a work of fiction, some of the more interesting and spicy incidents mentioned in the book are actually real. I have used my own experience at IIM and at my workplace to create the right environment for the story to be told. Would you say that Chetan Bhagat, another IIM graduate, has been influential and instrumental in helping you write the book? I wouldn’t say Chetan Bhagat has been instrumental in helping me write the book. I wrote Yours Sarcastically because I thought I had an extremely entertaining, sarcastic tale to be narrated. Chetan Bhagat has definitely helped in changing the perception of publishers in India – they are now more open to first-time authors on stories about the youth in India. Where do you see ‘Yours Sarcastically’ going? Perhaps a film adaptation? Yours Sarcastically has done extremely well till now. It has been critically well received by most major newspapers and magazines in India...Every author wants his or her book to be adapted to the big screen. The adaptation to the big screen is seen as the ultimate measure of acceptance and success for a book. I think Yours Sarcastically has all the elements to be converted into a commercially successful script. Some of the plot elements like interviewing 60 size zero south Bombay women, working with underworld dons, managing drunken managers, indulging in everyday office politics and back biting will resonate well and make for an interesting read.

What next for Sandeep Das? Are you going to continue writing? As of now, I have been writing articles for various newspapers and magazines. I definitely plan to continue writing. I am currently working on my second book. My second book is a sarcastic take on a career in management consulting.

PLACES AND EVENTS FOR THE MONTH

FISHETERIA, MUMBAI

Fisheteria is a chain of fast food outlets which are present in the food courts of different malls in Mumbai. CUISINE: Seafood is the only fare available in varieties of prawn and fish preparations FOOD AND DRINKS: The lack of choices is quite a deterrent since you are essentially only choosing between bass fish and prawn in five preparation styles – breadcrumb fried fingers, grilled, wraps and burgers. The food is passable for the good use of spices, but the breadcrumb fried items are too heavily coated to enjoy. Their homemade dips and sauces are quite delicious and go well with the food. The wraps and burgers definitely fare better than the starter items. Another plus is the drinks are refreshing and tasty. OVERALL IMPRESSION: A decent place, but at the prices and variety, you are better off at most other fast food outlets. Infinity Mall, New Link Road, Oshiwara, Andheri (W), Mumbai 40005

THE BIERE CLUB, BANGALORE

The Biere Club is Bangalore’s first craft brewery, churning out their own beers to inculcate a a beer culture in the city. CUISINE: The eats here are mostly finger food and Mediterranean cuisine FOOD AND DRINKS: The finger food is delicious, particularly the mushroom preparations. Since it has an almost pub-like atmosphere with its wooden tables and décor, the menu options are also pub-style food. The service is quick and the waiters are patient. All their beers are good but it is particularly fun to try their samplers which is a tasting of five of their beers so you can make up your mind about what to drink. OVERALL IMPRESSION: A fun environment with nice lighting and music. It would be best to visit on a Saturday night; in spite of being crowded and noisy, it has a great atmosphere. 20/2, Vittal Mallya Road, Lavelle Road Area, Bangalore - Shreeya Rao

Anuradha Sawhney’s The Vegan Kitchen: Bollywood Style! is a collection of vegan recipes favoured by Bollywood stars. Anuradha Sawhney is an animal rights activist and has served as the editor of animal rights magazine Animal Times’ Indian edition. She has also headed the Indian operations of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Here she shares Rahul Khanna’s recipe for crispy, salted baby potatoes.

RAHUL KHANNA’S CRISPY, SALTED BABY POTATOES Recipe for 4 – 5 servings INGREDIENTS Ingredients 500 g baby potatoes 1 tsp oil Salt to taste Freshly ground black pepper to taste

RECIPE METHOD 1 2 3 4

Soak the potatoes in a bowl of water for 30 minutes to loosen any dirt on the skin. Rinse and scrub them well with a brush so they become squeaky clean. Soak them again. Put a non-stick or a ceramic pan that has a handle and a lid over high heat. When hot, add the oil and the wet potatoes. If a few drops of water go in with the potatoes, it is fine, do not drain or dry them. Cover the pan immediately. After about 4 minutes, shake the pan vigorously so that the potatoes get dislodged. Leave the lid on. Reduce the heat to moderate and keep shaking the pan every 3 minutes. After 12-15 minutes, open the lid carefully, making sure that no water that may have condensed on the lid falls back into the pan. Check if they are cooked. The skin should be crisp and the potatoes should be tender from inside. Pierce one with a skewer; it should feel soft all the way through. If not, cover the pan again and cook on low heat, till tender. Do not cover the pan once the potatoes are cooked, else they will lose their crispness. If you are serving them immediately, add salt and pepper and serve in an open dish. If you are not serving them right away, leave them in the pan, without any seasoning, and cover with a light net cloth. When ready to serve, reheat without covering, season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.
