note

The Internet is booming in India like never before. There was a time when people were afraid of carrying out transactions online, fearing that their money or valuable information would be sucked into the Internet ‘black hole’. Today, it’s difficult to think of a single transaction that we have NOT carried out online. From shopping for airline tickets to finding a life partner, the Internet has transformed into a genie that efficiently grants all our wishes. But behind each of these dotcom facilities and brands that we so heavily rely on is an enterprising mind running a successful business. The Internet has grown into a full-fledged e-commerce industry, allowing many young entrepreneurs to innovate and take advantage of this space. In this issue, we have interviewed four charismatic and cool entrepreneurs who have led their innovative online businesses to success. There is immense value in their experiences, learnings and advice, especially if you aspire to start a business of your own someday. We hope their insights serve as inspiration to get you started on your own entrepreneurial journey. Part of being an entrepreneur is developing and leveraging your own identity. Being interactive on social networking sites, networking at events and being at the right place at the right time – they are all imperative for your personality. Sounds complicated? We simplify it for you and reveal how you can create your own personal brand and empower yourself. Our story includes inputs from experts who have succeeded in building on their personal strengths and converting them into successful brands. Friends are everything to us today. They become the family we choose rather than the ones we are handed out in life. August brings us Friendship Day, a great occassion to reach out to special friends in our lives. In an attempt to help you preserve your cherished friendships for life, we offer you a guide to help you through turbulent times. This issue is rich with stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. I hope these stories inspire you to be the best that you can possibly be. Happy Friendship Day!

Malhar on Wheels (MOW), 2013 St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai

This innovative campaign began in 2010 as a means of reaching out to colleges and acquainting them with the cultural aspects that Malhar, St. Xavier’s inter-collegiate youth festival, has to offer. This year, 20 students will be visiting various colleges in Mumbai to publicise the events of Malhar. Several contests will be held at the colleges to encourage participation. Passes will also be distributed. The dates for this year’s MOW are 6-8 August and 12-14 August. The student delegation will travel in a bus with their fun and evergreen (quite literally) mascot, Puddles. Their aim is to create an outlet for every college to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be a part of Malhar. The idea of MOW itself is ‘Zara Hatke’ and fits perfectly with Puddles, the Malhar mascot at K.J. Somaiya College, Mumbai the theme of this year’s Malhar.

YOU! WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB, FREELANCE WORK OR JUST A PLACE TO FILE YOUR INSPIRATION, DEVELOPING YOUR BRAND IDENTITY IS KEY TO SHOWING OFF WHAT MAKES YOU, YOU. NATHANIEL D’COSTA TELLS YOU MORE

N

ot sure what a personal brand is? Google yourself. If you have a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn account, your name along with these links will most likely pop up on the search page. There’s your personal brand right there. Now the next question you will probably ask is how is this important? If you’re already a 65-year-old CEO of a huge multinational company making a gazillion dollars a year, then you

can probably skip this, but if you are looking to promote yourself to potential employers or looking to stand out in a country of a billion people then personal branding will go a long way in letting others know exactly what you are about and what you have to offer. The term personal brand first came about when Tom Peters published ‘A Brand Called You’ in Fast Company Magazine in 1997. As Peters writes, “Regardless of age,

regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.” Just having a fancy resume no longer works. You now represent your resume. The more you are able to market yourself, the better are the chances of you landing a job.

So now you know what a personal brand is, but how do you take that next step and get the country raving about your product? Here are five simple ways to get you noticed

STAN WIECHERS, FLICKR

STEP 2

STEP 3

BUILD YOUR NETWORK No, don’t send friend requests or follow everyone that FB or Twitter suggests. You will just end up getting a whole lot of spam like Justin Bieber’s pictures on your feed. Instead, start interacting with people who are in the same field as you or are connected to your brand. Follow experts, learn from them and create relationships. Actively participate in groups and forums and attend outdoor events that pertain to your field.

STEP 4

STEP 1

CONAA PHOTOGRAFIES, FLICKR

LAN BUI, FLICKR

STAY IN SIGHT Do you remember how Felix Baumgartner continued tweeting until minutes before he took that epic leap? The next time you take a trip to the hills to find inner peace or plan to hibernate for the winter, make sure you have Internet connectivity. That’s not to say you can’t have time off, but don’t stay away for too many days at a time. If you do, you risk losing your influence and when you’re back, you’ll need to start creating your social media footprint all over again. Don’t let people forget who you are! MRGREEN09, FLICKR

YOU ARE AWESOME! SHOW IT Unfortunately, everyone else thinks they are awesome too, so you need to let your uniqueness outshine the others’. Be witty, quirky, sarcastic or plain silly if that’s who you are. Let your personality promote your brand. Have your own style that others will instantly recognise as yours, whether you are talking about world politics or about how you tripped on your own laces this morning. Warning: Don’t indulge in too much selfpromotion – you know how there’s that person who keeps talking about himself and annoys everyone around? Yeah, don’t be that person. No one wants to engage with someone who is constantly campaigning for themselves. You can promote your writing, opinions and ideas, but don’t forget to do the same for your followers.

ADAPT TO YOUR AUDIENCE If you notice that you got more likes and retweets for the picture of your shoes than the picture of your face then maybe you should go in for plastic surgery. We joke. Study your retweets, your shares and your comments. What are your followers telling you? What are they telling you that they like? Why do they love it so much? How can you do more of it? Figure out what your audience likes and share that type of content more often. Try and make assessments of your performance regularly and make sure you learn from your audience. Accept criticism even if it hurts your ego and work to make your content better. AENEASTUDIO, FLICKR

BE THE EXPERT Figure out what is that one thing you know so well that you can take on a super computer or that two-year-old girl in Britain who seems to know everything, and beat them with your knowledge. It could be anything: sport, fashion, food or pink fluffy unicorns (not highly recommended, though). The more specific and knowledgeable you are on a certain subject, the more relevant and endorsed you will be. If you’re not sure what you are really good at, ask your friends and family to help you out.

FOCUS FEATURE

How does social media impact your brand? Social media has brought the world at our finger tips, and thus, your brand worth is now just a click away! People can Google you in seconds and form judgments about the worth of your personal brand based on the social media and digital footprint you own. You cannot afford to exist in the 21st century and live in the 10th! You cannot ignore the purpose and power of social media, and at the same time, you must not undermine the perils it presents. Be wary of what you say, what you post and what you tag online – remember, it’s like being in a press conference 24x7, so never post what you won’t host. What goes online stays online; social media can break or make your personal brand, all it takes is just one click. How do you keep your personal life separate from your brand? Your personal brand is your reputation. Your personal life will have a huge impact on what you do in your professional life and thus influence your brand reputation. The three golden rules to demarcate your personal life from your professional life are: • Never mix your personal and professional circles online on various social media platforms. You may use Facebook for personal, LinkedIn for professional and Twitter for your social circles. If you do blog, keep your personal musings on a distinct blog away from your professional portfolio. • Do not publish personal/intimate/crazy/freaky/wild/inebriated pictures of yourself/others on the web; you do not want to end up being a victim to the same. • Brand yourself to highlight the best of both worlds – personal and professional life: for e.g., on Twitter, you can be anything but @sexysenorita or @thebikerhunk! Be relevant and YOUnique at the same time. Remember: every tweet you tweet, contributes in building or breaking your personal brand. yi

Be inimitable: Being good at what you do, mixed in with a go-getter attitude, used to be all you needed to get noticed and be considered for a great position in your field. Now you need a brand that’s absolutely unique if you want your card, or resumé, or portfolio to get a second look. Find and dominate your niche; celebrate your expertise. Malini Agarwal extended her passions and her expertise to her blog MissMalini which is now synonymous with Bollywood and fashion. Be valuable: A strong personal brand is focused on serving others. It sounds strange, but the easiest way to make it big is if others find value in your brand. Make your brand about the impact you can have on others. You’ll find that you won’t need to be concerned with self-promotion. Oprah Winfrey made sure viewers found value and connected with her show, thus building up her brand and making her one of the most powerful women in television. A strong, useful brand empowers your network to spread your story for you.

RANDY STEWART, FLICKR

Be yourself: Nothing connects people to your brand like your personal story. Adding your personality to your brand is what gets people to connect with you. Just ask Matthew Inman a.k.a The Oatmeal. Inman started a comics and articles website called The Oatmeal in 2009 that became so popular that Inman himself is now known as The Oatmeal and he carries that personality all over the Internet.

BACKGROUND

A JOB AT THE WORLD BANK HAS A VERY SUIT AND TIE FEEL TO IT. NEERJA DEODHAR FINDS OUT WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WORK AT ONE OF THE BIGGEST INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS WHOSE DECISIONS AFFECT THE ENTIRE WORLD

The World Bank is a 69-year-old financial institution attached to the UN that provides loans to developing countries. They work towards the upliftment of the poorest nations and for the care of economically fragile countries that have gone through conflict. The World Bank tries to achieve what individual countries sometimes cannot; their work also includes developing new vaccines and reducing carbon emissions to prevent global warming.

HOW TO APPLY

The World Bank Group receives a very large number of applications every year and they only accept applications for advertised positions, received through the online application form available on the World Bank website.

20 Youth Incorporated AUGUST 2013

20 Career.indd 20

7/25/2013 3:26:19 PM

WHY SHOULD YOU WORK AT THE WORLD BANK?

The World Bank has a compelling mission and cause; it does not function like a regular bank. It doesn’t work for profit essentially and aims to reduce poverty and support development. It gives competitive compensation and benefits. The work is challenging and rewarding and you will be part of a diverse workforce. You will be provided an intellectually dynamic environment to work in. It has a respected standing among the international development community and provides opportunities for continued learning, career guidance and marketability. You will get a firsthand experience of the system that the United Nations follows. It shines on your CV, even if you work for a short term period! DOUAS, FLICKR

WHAT WILL HELP PUT YOU AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION

DOUAS, FLICKR

TYPES OF JOBS

If you are over the internship route and want to get a taste of the real deal, the Junior Professional Associate, more commonly known as JPA, is the ideal job for you. JPAs are the youngest lot of World Bank employees. There are also various other positions like short term consultants, extended term technicians, open contract consultant, etc. Each sector also has its own kind of specialists who are hired by the World Bank because of their expertise in fields like water, agriculture and infrastructure. The World Bank needs resource management staff, which look after the accounts and finances of the Bank and legal associates. The Bank also offers scholarships and fellowship programs.

RECRUITMENT, WORK ENVIRONMENT, RENUMERATION

Some jobs are internally placed but most are available through a competitive process of written exams and interviews. The interviews are competitive to see if you are the best fit. “The work environment is good and friendly; it gave me great exposure as a development sector professional,” says Sonal Gaurishanker, who worked as a short term consultant with the World Bank. Sometimes your work may also involve a lot of travel. The pay depends on the nature of the contract you sign and also your qualifications and experience. You may get paid even on a daily or monthly basis depending upon the duration on your job, and the income is predecided by the Bank for each region. A recurring response that World Bank workers keep giving when asked about their job, is that the work is demanding and you have to multitask but you learn so much on the job. Getting a job at the World Bank sounds intimidating but if you work towards it, it is extremely fulfilling. yi

The qualifications and skills required may differ from programme to programme and the kind of job you apply for, but there are certain essential credentials that everyone who works at the World Bank must have:  Fluency in English. While you don’t need to know the complete works of Shakespeare, you need to master subject-verb agreement and exhibit an above-average level of technical English, especially in your field of work. Fluency in one or more of the Bank’s working languages – Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish – will be a bonus.  You must possess academic achievements that place you in the top 10% of your graduating class.  The basic qualification that you will need is a postgraduation in a social science like economics. Besides that you must also have analytical and research skills that extend to areas of specialisation, such as finance, human resources development (public health, education, nutrition, population), social sciences (anthropology, sociology), agriculture, environment, private sector development, as well as other related fields.  Network and contacts. While the World Bank hires through applications online, it is extremely advantageous if you know someone on the inside. It might not directly land you a job, but an inside contact can tell you of potential new openings before they are advertised on the official website and other media outlets.

AWARENESS

THE YOUNG AND THE IRRELIGIOUS In the birthplace of four major religions and home of many more, Jai Vipra finds out what it is like for young people who are good without God

T

he year is 500 BC. India is Vedic, but India is also Buddhist and Jain. And as this country has always had space to accommodate all kinds of diversity, India is also atheist – the Charavaka movement (which is mentioned in every article about Indian atheism ever) is alive.

ATHEISTS DON’T COUNT

The year is 2013, and Jatin Chaudhary is annoyed. Jatin is an engineering student from Delhi and finds it very odd that the Census does not have an option to check atheism. “We’re just lumped in with ‘Other’,” he says, “This leaves analysts with no reliable statistics, and atheists with no way to

record their beliefs. So what if we’re a minority? Indeed, who even knows how much of a minority we really are?” This summarises what it is generally like for an atheist in urban India – while it does not interfere with your daily life, there is an atmosphere of condescension or even outright non-acknowledgement.

ATHEIST MOVEMENTS IN INDIA

“I haven’t been horribly castigated for my atheism yet,” says Ravikant Rai, a 23 year old from Mumbai, “My parents and close friends do not have a problem with it. But some acquaintances ask me, rather seriously, if I believe I am above God or angry with God.” Neehar Kulkarni also mentions that his parents laughed it off when he declared his atheism. Akshay Jadye, another young professional from Mumbai, has a somewhat different story. “Once people find out about my beliefs, they lose all respect for me and think I’m a high-headed rebel who has given up God because it’s cool. They even become aggressive and treat me like an outcast. This is why many people are not openly atheist.”

NIRMUKTA: TOWARDS FREE THINKING

Akshay believes that the first and foremost religion anyone should follow is humanity. This sentiment has been promoted by Nirmukta since 2008. Nirmukta, in their own words, is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of science, freethought and secular humanism in India. A post on one of Nirmukta’s regional Facebook groups implores members to stay away from sexism, casteism and racism – an indicator of the group’s willingness to go beyond a simple rejection of the idea of God to being ‘freethinkers’ – people who attempt to be humane and nondiscriminatory while understanding their privilege.

Indian atheists also do not have many popular Indian texts to look at, apart from Bhagat Singh’s Why I Am An Atheist. Most of the people I spoke to, mentioned Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, enormous influences in the west. Anway Pramanik, a student from Bangalore, has a possible answer, “There is lack of room to think beyond religious boundaries here, unless you discover Dawkins or Hitchens by chance,” he says. Anway agrees that the Bangalore ‘scene’, with respect to atheism, is quite laid back. “There is indoctrination, but no persecution per se,” he says. This is probably because in the south, several atheist movements (the Self Respect movement, for example) have been popular historically. Even today, M Karunanidhi, A.K. Antony, P. Chidambaram and Siddaramaiah (Karanataka’s Chief Minister) have been identified as atheists.

LIFE WITHOUT A GOD Priye Mehta, who studies at Indraprastha University, says, “Few realise that you can keep your cultural background while rejecting the idea of a divine being. And while I cannot say I agree with Veer Savarkar, I keep my culture.” Priye finds it awkward that people blame everything on God.

Leaders from diverse political backgrounds have been identified as atheists. While Jawaharlal Nehru and Jayaprakash Narayan are prominent examples, what is perhaps more surprising is that Veer Savarkar, who is generally credited with the popularisation of Hindutva, was also an atheist. “I see it as a way of avoiding personal responsibility. Personally, I do not need a God or the fear of retribution to tell right from wrong,” he says. It is famously said that whatever you may say about India, the opposite is also true. This peculiar characteristic of India makes the case of atheism very interesting. So while Sanal Edamaruku, president of the Indian Rationalist Association, was almost arrested for disproving a miracle, Jaidev Ramakrishna, a computer engineering student from Mumbai, says he realises how dangerous it is to be an atheist in many parts of the world and thinks he is lucky to have been born in India. Lalit Chawla, the Nirmukta representative I spoke with, sums it up very well, “Being an atheist in India is like having a mohawk – people think it’s a phase. Then there is the dangerous side, where casteism, misogyny and submission to authority are all sanctified by religions, which makes opposition to them very difficult.” yi

GIVING GROWTH

IDEAS TO

Inspiration isn’t all you need to be an entrepreneur. Transformational experiences, life-changing lessons and eventful work hours are just some of the things AIESEC will provide to help you on your way, finds Sidhant Bhutani

H

istory seems to have had its time watching researchers and educationists debate over the definition of entrepreneurship. Most scholarly attempts at characterising entrepreneurship would revert to an elementary explanation, which is ‘Entrepreneurship is the process of discovering and being able to sort out opportunities from risks, and strategising plans, which on effective execution leads to financial self-sufficiency.’ While I was scrolling down my LinkedIn homepage, I came across an article by Linda Descano, Managing Director at Citi, titled ‘8 Cardinal Rules to be a Successful Entrepreneur’. In an uncomplicated language, Descano hits the nail on the head and hence comprehension was like shooting fish in a barrel. She has shed light on little yet critical things such as clarity of work, innovation, perspective thinking, the need to plan, adaptation, etc. What stood out even more was that entrepreneurship required evolution, more than just learning. Transformational experiences, life-changing lessons and eventful work hours – it is impossible to find these tailored onto a mannequin. For

decades, AIESEC has been catalytic in guiding the youth through an inimitable array of practices and activities, which directly or indirectly sows the seed of an entrepreneur within. In his interview to Forbes by Subroto Bagchi in 2010, Rajeev Mecheri, currently the Managing Director of Mecheri Smart Capital, owes his gratitude to AIESEC and its programmes, of which he was a part in the early 90s. It was here that Rajeev got his first business idea – iMetrix Tech. His business skills were so astounding that Siemens decided to buy out his company with one condition: Rajeev and his brother came with the business. While Rajeev In recent times, a gazillion articles, success stories of bright young people, self-help guides have inundated book shelves. Looking at it closely, one will be pushed to the simple conclusion that a lot of people, especially the youth, are hoping to be entrepreneurs. From ticket dispensers at metros to fast food counters all around, the world is bewitched under a spell that we call ‘instant’. In such an outline, a to-be entrepreneur needs to possess unique qualities that will place him or her on a pedestal of limelight.

moved on a few years later, his brother remained in the building technology business, located out of Switzerland. The acquisition then was valued at a whopping $100 million. This story reassures us that young people of today are the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The idea of business ownership as a vulnerable career for youth requires, as mentioned before, an evolutionary learning. This is where unique youth organisations such as AIESEC come into play. Inspiration is available all over the Internet. But the power to get ourselves started lies in our hands. Aspiring young entrepreneurs need to wake up to the living dream of better tomorrows. Until then, we can bask in the glory of all the forever-young, who have etched their names in the pages of history. yi

OUT OUTOF OFTHE THEBOX BOXCAREER

If you possess good organisational skills along with a strong heart and an even stronger stomach, consider a career as a funeral director. Palak Kapadia explores this ‘grave’ profession

T

he death of a loved one is a traumatic time for the family. Funeral directors aid a bereaved family to plan a memorable funeral service in honour of their deceased beloved. Contrary to the popular myth, this gloomier counterpart of wedding planning does not require actual handling of the dead. Rather, it is concerned with coordinating all aspects of a funeral. Though funeral directors cannot bring back the dead, they can ease the transition between life and death for families.

What will I do?

Here’s what goes into planning a typical funeral:  Consulting with the family about the details of the funeral such as the time and place  Making coffin provisions, arranging for flowers, headstones, etc  Meeting with officials of the selected cemetery to purchase interment property  Completing legal requirements such as obtaining death certificates and burial permits  When required, carrying out the

dressing and embalming of the bodies

What is the scope of the profession?

Despite being a popular occupation abroad, funeral direction is not as common in India. It is however, gaining popularity at a rapid pace. “In the Western and European countries there are funeral colleges and courses. One has to become licensed and trained as per the international standards. In India, it is still growing,” says Elroy Noronha of Indian Rescue and Funeral Services. While the

with internships in funeral homes are recommended

What perks will I enjoy?

 Since this profession is still emerging in India, it is not very competitive; establishing yourself is relatively easy  Since death is certain, it is a profession that never dies, no pun intended  The biggest perk is the feeling of satisfaction and pride in caring for the dead in the most honourable way possible. Being there for a devastated family in their time of utmost need ensures that you are brimming with inner contentment and are rewarded with a sense of satisfaction.

WEIRD, WEIRDER, WEIRDEST

While celebrities are known to act quirky every once in a while, these top three wacky celebrity funerals define new levels of bizarre! As per his request in his will, James Doohan’s family launched his ashes into outer space for burial. Well, it was only appropriate for Scotty to have a Star Trek funeral.

What challenges will I face?

It is a very challenging profession as death is an unplanned event. “Funeral directors have to work odd working hours, [get] no weekends at times and [face] harsh working conditions,” Noronha says. Besides being physically demanding, it is also emotionally taxing. Dealing with death all the time and an omnipresent feeling of sorrow in the work place can often bring you down. yi

clientele consists mainly of Christians, nowadays a lot of people from other religions request the services of funeral directors as well.

What do I study?

 Two or four-year course in mortuary sciences at universities abroad  Course covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, embalming techniques and business management  No prescribed qualification for funeral direction in India. Studies in a related field, such as business or event management, coupled

Income: Individual funeral services are priced between `2,000 and `10,000, depending on the services clients use. In a mid-sized firm, remuneration can range from `25,000 to `50,000 a month. Skills set: Emotional stability and a

strong heart, compassion and empathy for the aggrieved family, ability to provide psychological support, a strong stomach for post-mortem sights and smells, a good black suit

cuba diving is slowly forming its own niche when it comes to water sports in India. Especially after movies like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Blue, tourists have discovered that there is no better way to see the visual wonders that the ocean has to offer than scuba diving. As Carlos Eyles says, “Scuba diving is very much a black and white world in terms of the laws and rules one must abide by. It comes down to clear-cut physics.” Just as diving is gaining attention, so is training to be a scuba instructor.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Ideally, an instructor must have an innate love and respect for the ocean; he/she must be totally comfortable in the water. He must be a responsible person because he is taking people’s lives into his hands and he should be able to think on his feet in case there is any emergency. “An instructor must also be patient with his students because essentially, he’s a teacher and a lot of learners may have aqua phobia”, says Akshay Tanna. He should have a sound understanding of the sea and its flora and fauna, but that can be picked up while you’re on the job too. Someone who aspires to be a diver must have a fit body.

INSTITUTES

Some well-known institutes to train at are Barefoot Scuba and Dive India in Andaman. Dive schools like Andaman Bubbles and Barracuda Diving offer master courses but only. A few like PADI can certify you as a professional diver. Dive schools in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore take their students to destinations all over the world.

REMUNERATION

A beginner dive master can earn up to `15,000 a month, a beginner instructor earns about `30,000 and an experienced instructor can earn up to `45,000 a month. Sometimes the institute you’re working for might cover your daily expenses and your food and stay may be paid for. Work conditions differ depending on which dive school you work for and what your qualifications

are. However, young diving instructors are realising the potential of freelancing and entrepreneurship where they decide what their pay will be like.

PERKS AND CHALLENGES

The ocean is unpredictable and weather conditions are constantly changing. Sometimes divers have to swim through strong currents. Another challenge is to ease students and tourists, who are initially scared, into the water. “Sometimes work scenarios could get scary. It made me realise that in a job like mine, safety is paramount,” warns Tanna. The perks of being a diving instructor aren’t the typical companycar-and-driver, or monthly raises, but you do get to live at exotic places. However, your job will take your around the world and you will have the opportunity of meeting a lot of interesting people belonging to different cultures.

GOING AGAINST THE TIDE

In this dog-eat-dog world where everyone is striving to get a better salary, a better job, better employment benefits, a scuba diver’s life may seem very laidback and easy. The general perception of the Indian parent and society of a ‘real job’ is one which involves sitting at a desk behind a computer for hours at length. Scuba diving breaks all these career stereotypes. It promotes a healthy lifestyle and a pollutionfree work environment. The interest in water sports and snorkeling is still developing in our country, as is the need for marine conservation. People understand the seriousness of this career now. Tanna’s advice to people considering this profession is, “Making the initial decision to take it up as a means to earn a livelihood, especially if you are switching jobs, is usually the toughest. But nothing beats the satisfaction that you gain from doing what you love and earning money while you’re at it.” yi

COURSES YOU NEED TO COMPLETE Open Water: The most popular diver programme worldwide which allows you the freedom to dive with a buddy, independent of a professional. You will learn about scuba fundamentals, equipment and diving techniques, then practice your diving skills in the pool before actually going into the sea. You must be able to float/swim for 10 minutes and complete either a 100-meter continuous swim or 300-meter continuous swim with snorkel & fins. Advanced Water: This course offers the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities and inter-related skills to enhance your interests and capabilities as a diver. Rescue Diver: This course enables you to build the confidence, knowledge and skills required to anticipate, prevent and manage potential dive-related accidents in the unlikely event that a problem should arise. From assisting a tired diver to handling realistic emergency scenarios, locating and resuscitating an unconscious diver to first aid and oxygen administration, the safety and wellbeing of others is your goal. Dive Master: You will work with divers, handle boats, tie knots, and guide certified divers. This course will prepare you for a professional role within the industry. You will complete exercises such as mapping, underwater problem solving and managing a dive accident scenario. Instructor: After this course, you become a master of instructorlevel dive theory, knowledge development teaching and confined water teaching. AUGUST 2013 Youth Incorporated 33

Yet, since the dawn of civilisation when countries were kingdoms, trade thrived between them. International relations, good and bad, gave birth to world politics, conflicts, treaties, wars, human rights, etc. Sustaining these

THE EXPERTISE OF A DIPLOMAT

Diplomats have been an integral part of international policies even before foreign ministers and their departments were established. It’s as

much an art as is a profession, requiring great tact and equanimity, to deal with sensitive international matters under great strain. If you wish to develop that tact and composure, a smooth tongue, zeal to get what you want and the cunning to make someone give it to you; if you’re interested in international culture and languages, politics, economics, humanities, environment and world peace, becoming a career diplomat is the choice for you.

The most challenging aspect of this profession, according to me, is the ability to be at ease with milieus, which are poles apart, from Tirana to Timbuktu, Port Moresby to Panama City. Nobody is born a diplomat. The meticulous and never-ending training makes him one. Which is why becoming an Ambassador of India takes almost 18-20 years. How did you decide to take up open water swimming? Since I started swimming at the age of three, I was very good at swimming competitively. I remember vaguely that my parents took me to a beach when I was seven and the view and the atmosphere struck me. It was the zing and the thrill that I imagined and I asked my coach if it was possible for me to swim in the open water. Luckily he put me in a competition swim from Chorward to Veraval on the coast of Gujarat which is considered to be the most dangerous water body across India, famous for its sea life and turbulent waves. Since then I’ve always been an open water swimmer because of the adventure value. Which has been the most challenging swim for you till date? Every swim that I have done so far

Sufyan Shaikh, the first Indian to complete swimming in ten seas and the youngest recipient of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, talks to Sean Sequeira about his achievements and challenges

36 Prodigy.indd 36

has been challenging. Every sea has different temperatures and sea life. But a swim that was challenging both for me and my parents emotionally and physically was the English Channel. Before swimming the English Channel I had not gone to another country to stay and train for three months. Whatever swims that I had done were funded by my parents and when I decided to swim

destination a month or so in advance so that I can train in the right weather and get maximum results. Does any particular stroke help you in open waters over others? Being a swimmer you are supposed to know all the four strokes of swimming. Mostly, open water swimmers prefer freestyle because it’s more direct and you can swim for hours and hours without being too tired. My stroke of choice is freestyle as well.

the English Channel, my family was nearly bankrupt. The government was not helpful and sponsors would shy away as swimming does not have a guaranteed return in our country. Moreover, I had dislocated my knee and had to undergo a major operation a month prior to my scheduled leave. In short, I had everything to lose if I failed and a lot to gain if I succeeded. How do you train for a competition? My swims are mostly endurance based. I have to swim for hours, maintaining a steady speed, and have some energy reserved in the end for sprinting. My training lasts for about six to eight hours a day focusing on maintaining speed and constant hand movement. The thing that challenges me the most while practicing is that I am an open water swimmer who practices in pool but competes in ocean. This is why I prefer to train minimum in the pool and reach my competition or swim

Do you prefer the competitive swims with other participants or solo swims? Personally, I like to challenge other swimmers to race. I am a speed driven athlete and knowing that someone is challenging you on the other side just makes a swim much better. The solo swims are good but after a while they do get boring when it’s just you and the sea. What mental and physical challenges did you face in your accomplishment of being the first Indian to swim across nine/ten seas? A lot of both. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but my parents gave me the luxury and lifestyle of a prince. I can say swimming the English Channel was a turning point in my life. I got some recognition from the press which made people aware who I am and what I am here to do, but before that, there were a lot of fights in my family regarding my travels for swimming competition but the dedication of my parents helped me reach where I am today. The government was never really helpful in any way as most of the time we were told to meet someone who didn’t exist. Also, training was a big issue because of swimming in the pool and competing in the ocean. When can we expect you to complete your personal challenge of swimming across all 102 channels in the world? It will take about 30 to 40 years

considering the time and the goal. But I do believe it is achievable (if I have a long life). Each sea is different and the training that goes under it is unique to the swim. You did not qualify for the Olympics in 2012 because of lack of funding and support from the government. Is this pushing you over the edge to leave the sport of swimming? Nothing can push me to quit swimming. However, looking at my current situation, funding has been a major part for me to think about stopping to swim competitively. For example, I went to the World Championship in Shanghai 2011 and I wasn’t even provided with a shirt that says I represent India let alone having a team of seven people to take care of me. Every other swimmer had facilities of a doctor, manager, therapist, coach, and nutritionist while I was the only one wearing a plain white t-shirt and competing. An estimated cost to compete at World Champs requires about 7 to 8 lakhs. And to qualify for the Olympics I’d have to compete in 14 of these events each year. Now I ask you a question – how is it possible? yi

A

degree and a diploma are both recognitions conferred on a person after he/she successfully completes an educational course. However, there are differences between both of them and it is necessary for one to know and understand those differences.

DEGREE

• 3 or 4-year-long course (after HSC exam from a statutory board/a university in India or an equivalent) • Emphasises on academics and imparting in-depth knowledge of the opted subject

DIPLOMA

• 1 or 2-year-long course • More vocational in nature • Concentrates only on the important areas of study 38 Youth Incorporated AUGUST 2013

CHECK LIST

Opt for a DEGREE if:  You want to gain indepth knowledge in your interested field  You have financial support for 3 or 4 years  Getting a job soon is not your priority  You want broader job opportunities

Opt for a DIPLOMA if:  You have scored less in your 10th/12th exam (this doesn’t mark the end of your education; opt for a diploma since the admission criteria is lenient on marks)  You think you cannot cope up with the degree curriculum after your 12th; choose a diploma programme and ease your way into a degree  Entering the work force is topping your priority list  You want a more practical and focused education  You don’t have the funds to cover a 3 or 4 year study period

What about CERTIFICATE COURSES?

 Costlier than a diploma course since they are affiliated to private institutions or international universities  Aim at providing careeroriented knowledge  Guarantee finesse in your already existing educational qualifications and add plus points to your resume  Usually last a few weeks to a number of months, depending on how you choose to complete the course – full-time or part-time yi

The worth of nature

time to take

stock Nisha JamVwal analyses the state of the world today with reference to the Uttarakhand disaster and highlights the need to live in harmony with nature

As mundane as it may seem compared to nanotechnology, space flight, Mars landing and flying cars, it is still important to plant trees, on a small scale or a large scale. Considering the devastation of Uttarakhand and the increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, a tree cover is essential to prevent fatal soil erosion. My pious pundit proclaims that it is Lord Shiva doing the angry tandav due to the atrocities meted out to his mountain, and the news channels shout political machineries that were negligent, but I believe the time to find fault is later. It is now time to worry about our environment. And this is India, the land that from ancient times has been steeped in a culture respectful of nature to the point of devotion. This is also true of other prominent civilizations in China and Japan. Even today in Japan one washes one’s feet before entering a garden – as one would before entering a temple.

A dead planet

My favorite animation film Wall-E so aptly depicts a horrific future where Earth has become an uninhabitable dumping yard with layers of plastic, waste and detritus of human lifestyle. This poignant and dark depiction should set us all thinking. Another favorite, Erin Brockovich, is a movie about us. Just one company’s lack of

40 Youth Incorporated AUGUST 2013

7/25/2013 4:45:49 PM

concern for the environment can do damage to very large populations. But we are the ones, individually and collectively, who need to be watchful and prevent this carelessness.

No takers for the environment

The level of concern and interest for the environment in India is way below than in the West – perhaps with our large population, survival in the normal course is such a struggle that concern for nature diminishes. I personally feel passionately about environmental issues, never before than now, having watched the death toll at Uttarakhand. Be it global warming, pollution, noise, denudation of forests, extinction of flora and fauna, waste of resources and energy, over-population or traffic emissions – we need to control our impact on the environment. Most environmental issues are reflective of the lack of concern for the next man’s needs or those of the next generations. Many people tend to dismiss these issues with the attitude that a single person can make no difference. I am dismayed at this callousness and arrogance that eats through resources for self-gratification with little cognizance toward other life. There is so much each one of us can do – and Erin is a good example (that movie is based on a true story). Environmental issues should be a burning concern and have to be urgently addressed if we are to make peace with our conscience.

India’s history with nature

In Vedic times, that forests and trees are sources of well-being was understood at all levels. The sanctity of all living things is a constant theme in the literature and religious and scientific treatises of those times. An entire branch of science, Vrishayur (vrish meaning tree and ayur meaning health), revolving around these aspects developed. There were sacred groves appropriated to temples. Certain trees were sacred to certain deities and were

not to be cut. It is believed that the tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment still lives in Sri Lanka, from a branch graft carried there in Emperor Ashoka’s time. Certain flowers are sacred to particular gods. Many flora and fauna were given specific persona and treated with love and respect. There is a charming story in Kalidasa’s play Shakuntala where Shakuntala is bidding goodbye to her ‘sisters’, the trees, as she leaves to be married, and instructs her friends to care of them. In the same play, an ascetic in a hermitage restrains the monarch Dushyant from releasing an arrow upon a deer, saying, “Your weapon was meant to protect the weak, not smite the innocent!”

“We need new creation of myths to repair the damage done by our recklessly mechanical abuse of nature and to restore the balance between man and the rest of the organisms with which he shares the planet.” - Simon Schema Indian mythology abounds in tales structured around such harmonies – Krishna revelled in the forest; Rama, during his exile, displays a relationship of harmony and loving co-existence with nature. The forest nurtures him with fruits, berries, nuts and roots, and bark for clothing. The birds and animals are his devotees, friends and aides. Mahabharata too depicts a world of lush forests of fragrant beauty, abodes of sages and saints. The portrayal is of an environment that is ever nurturing of the spiritual self of man. An ancient text called Mangalashtaka mentions a grove of ten trees and expresses hope that this flowering grove may herald the wellbeing of the whole world! This affinity for planting trees and increasing greenery is strong through India’s

history as we know from the accounts of Chinese traveller Huen-Tsang, the diktats of Kautilya, the edicts of Ashoka, and until more recently, from the Mughals with their penchant for creating garden ‘paradises’ on Earth.

Environmental damage today

Unfortunately, today’s whirlwind of development has flung this heritage to the background, almost obliterating our cultural imprint. We are denuding forests and hillsides, and putting up unplanned residential developments and toxic waste-spewing industries, robbing our noble species of their habitat and driving them to extinction. There is lack of vision of the larger picture, driven by apathy, lethargy, indifference and corruption. In this land of karma where every cause is said to bear irredeemably upon the effect, every wasteful, unconcerned act that causes some loss or damage or hurt somewhere is as much a part of my karmic record as another’s. We have seen the repercussions in Uttarakhand and the devastating effects with the rising of the sea level when it envelops lands and heritage structures. Yet people gleefully fling plastic bags everywhere. We waste electricity, water and energy, choking the cities with a surfeit of cars, when less would do. It is time that we remind ourselves and other Indians of our beautiful heritage which teaches that all things that exist – plants, animals, humans – are made of the same prana or vital breath. We must gratefully nurture the environment that bountifully nurtures us. And, however modest the scale, any effort at concern beyond one’s own self will make a difference. Just as a ripple follows a ripple when one throws a stone in a still pond, today I think of my brother, tomorrow of my neighbour, and the day after of the world. yi

JOBS S K E E W S E T A ST Jubanashwa Mishra has travelled eight states and has become a photographer, a mountain cleaner, a rafting instructor and a sevak at the Golden Temple among other things in the last eight weeks. Youth Inc talks to him to learn more about his incredible journey

T

he ‘One Week Job Project’ was started by Canadian Sean Aiken in February 2007 after he wasn’t sure what career to pursue. He then expanded the project to Australia, USA, UK, and India. Jubanashwa Mishra is the first Indian attempting this epic project of 28 jobs in 28 weeks across all 28 Indian states.

What motivated you to job-hop across the country?

After I quit the IT industry to do my postgrad, I also got involved in many new ventures. I was fortunate enough to come across various industries like film, advertising, media and energy. I realised that in every industry, job satisfaction is a serious issue. Everyone’s story starts with “I wanted to do this, but…” and ends with “Someday I will”. When I got through the One Week Job Project whose motto is to “Discover Your Passion” worldwide, I easily connected with the idea. Through these 28 different jobs in 28 weeks throughout the 28 states of India, I’m trying to rejuvenate everyone’s dreams to discover their passion.

Which of the jobs you have attempted so far has been most fulfilling? And most challenging?

The most fulfilling would be the job as a movie marketing executive because I love Bollywood! I cannot choose the least favourite as I enjoyed all my jobs.

Did you have a list of jobs in mind when you started the project? Or did you accept whatever jobs came your way?

I had a wish list of jobs, like a Bollywood marketing executive, a tattoo artist and cremation assistant in Varanasi. However, I am open, ready and willing to take any and all job offers that are presented. I can’t wait to discover what other jobs are available out there, many of which I may have never even heard of.

Are you taking breaks between jobs? Do you find the time to explore your new city while you are employed there?

I do not take breaks in between jobs. I usually work from Monday to Friday. I spend the weekends to travel to the next destination. While working in

a new city, I hardly get time to explore, except for the city areas that I cover during work. If there is any particular place that I really want to see, then I try to visit that place.

Which jobs do you have lined up for the following weeks? Any particular job you are particularly excited about?

I’m currently working as a movie marketing executive in a leading Bollywood PR firm. I am really excited about the job because I get to know how a name becomes a celebrity brand and how a signature becomes an autograph. I also learnt how to position a movie before its release, strategising the target audience according to what the movie is based on, etc. It’s all new and very interesting.

Having worked as an employee and an entrepreneur, which role do you prefer?

There are pros and cons in both the roles. An entrepreneur enjoys the freedom and decision taking capability while an employee enjoys the security and financial stability. However, I always prefer to take risk and live the life of an entrepreneur.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE A START UP FACES HIRING, FUNDING

been a major asset to us. What one also needs to understand is that you don’t need to know all the answers when you start out, but an entrepreneur needs to have the innate curiosity to learn the various aspects of their domain as they go along, as well as hire a strong team of talented individuals who will feel just as passionately about your product as you do.

How much did your education contribute to your becoming an entrepreneur?

What’s the one thing about being an entrepreneur that you learnt the hard way?

The one thing that IIT Delhi taught me was how to get things done, more than just the technical education. My biggest takeaways from IIT are focus, persistence and follow-through.

When did you realise that there was a space for a company like Zomato?

Back in 2008, I was working at Bain and Company, one of the largest management consulting firms in the world. At Bain, I noticed that my colleagues used to line up to view the stack of menu cards in the cafeteria during lunch hour. There was a rule that you cannot take the menus to your desk since people generally ended up losing them, causing inconvenience for everyone. Looking at the queue, and to save the trouble for everyone, I just scanned these menus and put them online for everyone to use. This small intranet website started getting a substantial number of hits from people within Bain. That was when we realised we could build a business out of this. That is how Zomato was born.

How important is it to have a background in the business you start? Since we are in the domain of consumer technology, having a technical background has definitely

DETOX MANTRA I TAKE A BREAK AND TRAVEL WITHOUT MY LAPTOP.

Hiring the right people.

How has success changed the way you work?

I think the reception we have got so far only makes us try even harder to create a product that our users like. We are all the more driven to create a world-class product with lesser room for error.

BEST WAY FOR A START UP TO GET FUNDING: BUILD A GREAT PRODUCT How much of your personality is reflected in your company?

‘Get things done’ is the bedrock of our culture here at Zomato. Going the extra mile and doing more than you’re required to, often on a very tight deadline, is something that comes naturally to everyone here. It’s an ethos we very strongly support, and it’s encouraging to see it permeating throughout the organisation.

Are there specific traits you look for while hiring people for your company? We look for individuals who are actually passionate about the role that they want to take up at Zomato. We are a group of people who love our

A BOOK EVERY ENTREPRENEUR SHOULD READ “HOW TO STOP READING BOOKS AND MOVE YOUR ASS” work, and that stems from the passion we have towards Zomato and also the joy we derive from what we do. Besides their passion for the company, we look for qualities like ethics, respect, attitude and skills – in that order.

How can you tell when the business isn’t working? How much time should you give your start up before you decide it’s time to pull the plug?

Depends when your patience runs out. Generally, however, when you are about to give up, you are always two feet from gold.

How can you tell if one is cut out to be an employee or an employer?

In a growing organisation, there is place for both kinds of people. You cannot identify this in a course of an interview. You figure this over a period of time. When it happens, you have to put the right people at the right place in the organisation.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE AN ONLINE START UP FACES: FUNDING off on your own, you end up learning from mistakes or through experience, while an education teaches you how to execute certain things without having to commit mistakes. It makes the learning curve easier. [A degree] allows you to understand risk very well; so many people with a good education will weigh all the risks before diving into a business.

With a number of competitors entering the e-retail space (Myntra, Yebhi, Zovi, etc), how do you ensure your business has the strongest brand recall among customers?

THE INDUSTRY WITH MAXIMUM POTENTIAL FOR YOUNG BUSINESSES HEALTHCARE, EDUCATION AND E-COMMERCE How much did your education contribute to your becoming an entrepreneur?

I don’t think a degree at a college is necessary to becoming an entrepreneur. I have seen a lot of people without a degree doing really well. If you start

If you have more players it proves that it’s a bigger market, be it automobile or retail. Having said that, there is always a market leader and when we started there were already existing players but we saw the opportunity to create our presence in a very positive way. Today we have more than 80,000 options on our website in the lifestyle category which is not comparable to the others. We improved on customer experience. For example the promptness of delivery – we ensured that we could deliver products to certain areas on the same day or the next day. Another thing was all the companies gave the customers a 30-day return policy but none of the delivery guys allowed you to check the product on delivery, so we started that as well. We realised that size, look and feel is an important variable so we gave that experience to the customer. We also started swipe on delivery and quick exchange. So it was a combination of all these small initiatives that we started to ensure that the customer feels the difference when they do business with us. A BOOK EVERY ENTREPRENEUR SHOULD READ IT DEPENDS, FOR INSPIRATION IT WOULD BE STAY HUNGRY, STAY FOOLISH BY RASHMI BANSAL; IF YOU NEED TO MAKE TOUGH DECISIONS THEN YOU NEED THE BHAGAWAD GEETA

How do you know if you’ve come up with a great dotcom idea?

There are two ways to work. Many ideas are run by self belief. There are a lot of entrepreneurs who did not know how much money they would make. But their belief in the product pushed them to create something that users liked. Then there is also a rational and analytical way to look at it, which is to ask what problem am I solving or what delight am I creating? Will customers pay for it? How scalable will that be? How much time will that require? How much investment? You need to do a thorough sanity check while removing your attachment to the idea.

BEST WAY FOR AN ONLINE START UP TO GET FUNDING COME UP WITH SOMETHING THAT’S NEW AND SCALABLE DETOX MANTRA I LOVE WALKING, ESPECIALLY WHERE THERE IS LOT OF GREENERY Is there potential for young fashion brands to use Jabong.com as a platform to sell their products?

Of course, we have a created a platform where small and big entrepreneurs can enter. Though there are two parts to this. One is product development, second is selling. The good news for the entrepreneur is that if he/she is really good in product designing and manufacturing, then the second part is taken care of. But they should fulfil the criteria of our listing; they should be of the right quality and the right price.

What’s the one thing about being an entrepreneur that you learnt the hard way?

I keep making mistakes. But one thing I learnt though was to keep your pitch ready because it is not easy to attract the best talent to a start-up. And some advice I would give is that whatever you thought and planned in terms of timelines and cash, multiply it by two or three. It might reduce, but it pays to create a buffer. In one year we had 100,000 downloads – we then realised that if just one magazine can get 100,000 downloads in just one year, then what if we create something that can cater to ALL magazines of the world! This is what prompted us to create Magzter in 2011.

What’s the biggest challenge Magzter had to overcome?

Being a newcomer in a 100-year-old industry, the biggest challenge was to get the top publishers to sign up with Magzter. It took more than 9 months to get our first major publisher and then it no longer was a challenge.

How much of your personality is reflected in your company? My personality is to be meticulous,

Surprisingly, in developing countries like India, since literacy levels are still rising, there is still a rise in print but due to the rise of tablet and smart devices, we are hugely confident that our future is very bright.

How important in the business equation are the people you employ? How much of a difference can they make? Our people are our main asset. We spend a lot of time to hire the best possible people in each field, keeping in mind the cash constraints of any

Convincing the first major brand was quite difficult but when we met the top team from the brand and showcased Magzter to them, they loved it and then signed up. Now we have all the world’s top magazines on Magzter!

What do you keep in mind while selecting a business partner?

How much did your education contribute to your becoming an entrepreneur? My education is actually entirely responsible for me being an entrepreneur although in a perverse way. As a college student in India, I never saw value in the kind of education that was being imparted in commerce, arts and science degrees. I spent most of my time attempting novel business ideas, which invariably failed. That is when I decided to move to the [United] States. I lived there for ten years, and started to think

INDUSTRY WITH MAXIMUM POTENTIAL FOR YOUNG BUSINESSES CLEARLY, DIGITISATION AND THE INTERNET HAVE THROWN UP IMMENSE OPPORTUNITIES TO BUILD BUSINESSES IN A CONNECTED WORLD. THESE BUSINESSES ALSO REQUIRE LESSER CAPITAL AND CAN BE BUILT ON MERIT ALONE for myself, play the devil’s advocate, and back my own ideas with reason and logic. These are key attributes for any entrepreneur and I might not have developed them, had it not been for my disenchantment for the education system in India, or at least my experience of it.

When did you realise that there was space for a company like Shaadi.com?

In 1996, there was a lot of buzz about the Internet in India. That’s when I came across a professional matchmaker in India and his business model intrigued me. He went from door to door within his community, to people he knew, and carried ‘resumés’ with him. Essentially, the choice of a life partner was determined by how far the matchmaker could travel and how much weight he could carry. I wondered what would happen if we took away the spatial and geographical limitations away by putting up profiles on the Internet. Thus, Shaadi.com was set up.

How do you know if you’ve come up with a great dotcom idea? That’s a $1b question! Frankly, you

don’t really know whether or not you have come up with a great idea in the early stages. You might have the conviction and you might even be stupid enough to actually flog a bad idea hard enough that you end up making it work, but when you start you don’t really ‘know’. Are [young entrepreneurs] doing it because it’s cool? Are they doing it because somebody else is? Or are they doing it because they really think there is a problem out there that they can solve better than anybody else? If one can identify a problem before someone else does, pursue the solution with all

What tips would you offer young entrepreneurs on the effective use of social media and other digital platforms to leverage one’s business?

Economists find jobs in business/financial journalism, stock broking, in financial and credit rating agencies, the government, banking sector, and consultancies. It would be difficult to attract jobs in your early thirties with no relevant prior work experience. Government and public sector organisations hire freshers only upto thirty years of age. Since the eligibility test for lectureship (NET/ SET) has no upper limit, you may be able to apply for a lectureship, but a younger applicant would offer strong competition. Finding a foothold in media may be possible if you possess strong writing, reporting, analysing and communicating skills.

First identify the university offering the most relevant programme in the context of your background (that is, study the eligibility requirements, entrance test requirement and application deadlines). As things stand, employability of a foreign national isn’t a sure bet in any country. Also, a country that has some potential today may not be in the same position by the time you complete your studies. Research the universities that you have prioritised, study their industry interaction, their country’s policies on work visas and choose the one which offers the optimum mix. Look for relevant work experience while you are deciding.

It would be a good idea to enroll for MSc IT/ computer science or MCA after graduating. Plan to apply for a master’s degree abroad during the final year of your master’s degree in India. If you want to do MBA, then you should work for three years or so before applying for admission abroad so that by the time you join, you have at least 4 years of work experience after BSc. Placements in both cases can be good, but when it comes to jobs abroad, there is never any certainty for international applicants.

GOING SOLAR Q: I wish to take up a master’s degree abroad in solar energy. I would like to get an initial placement after completing my studies. Which country should I target? Prakash

JOBS IN PSYCHOLOGY Q: I am in Std XII (arts) with history, psychology, English, economics and fashion technology as my subjects. I am interested in pursuing a career in psychology but I have no clue about the job prospects in this field. Indrani Chakravartty Psychologists (that is, postgraduates and doctorates in psychology) enjoy excellent job prospects in teaching, counselling, testing, and research, in healthcare primarily in offices of mental health practitioners, hospitals, physicians’ offices, and outpatient mental health and substance abuse centres. Government agencies employ psychologists in correctional facilities, law enforcement, schools and colleges and other settings. Market research and rehabilitation counselling and therapy are other options. Academia, government, private consulting, and industry/corporate sector are prospective employers.

The unofficial rules of

friendship

What’s life without friends, eh? Friendship may be as eternal as the ever-expanding universe, but it’s not a relationship that always runs as smooth as creamy butter. Aparna Sundaresan explores some lesser known facets of friendship

F

riends are that precious group of people to whom we can say anything and with whom we can do anything. However, few realise there’s a more complex side to friendships. Friends are essentially other people, and people are complicated. All relationships need work to survive and friendship is no exception. While there is no one way to conduct a friendship, there are some ‘rules’ that apply to most people.

When in doubt, make friends with people who have the same sense of humour as you What! Why? Why not? Wouldn’t you rather hang out with someone who understands what makes you tick? One man’s joke is another man’s insult, so stick to someone for whom it’s a joke too! People who laugh together stay together.

But how? Test the waters; crack your jokes in a social situation and look for those who laugh at them. Who does that? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They met at a comedy improv group before working together on the TV show Saturday Night Live. Since both have a subtle, observational sense of humour, they got together well and became firm friends. Fey has written very fondly of Poehler in her autobiography Bossy Pants.

Great co-workers may make good friends but good friends don’t always make great coworkers What! Why? Just because you get along well with someone as a friend doesn’t mean you two will have a brilliant working relationship – you will soon find stark contrasts in working styles, work ethics, ideas, opinions and problem solving approaches which could effectively kill your friendship. But how? Personal and professional relationships work differently. You are more flexible in a personal relationship, but less so in a professional one because there you are driven by goals, not by the person. Say you believe all your emails should be responded to immediately, but your friend-colleague thinks it’s okay to reply to emails later; you two will soon be bickering over efficiency and etiquette and yada yada; it’s a trivial example, but little things like this tend to flare up into a proper war. Familiarity breeds contempt: Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie

DAVID SHANKBONE, FLICKR

Sisters in humour: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

Who does that? Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. They were best friends growing up and decided to cash in on their fame with the reality show The Simple Life. Alas, during the filming of the show they had a bitter fall out and ended their friendship. The show was subsequently cancelled.

Know when to break up with a friend What! Why? Unfortunately, some friends cannot and should not last forever because their company will, after a while, make you miserable and your life difficult. But how? As said before, people are complicated. And they change. The friend who cracks stupid jokes might have been endearing when you were 12, but plain annoying now at 17. Here’s how you recognise a toxic friend:  You often find yourself giving them multiple chances after they mess up in the friendship department one too many times  They seem to want to gossip and b*tch about other people more than have a nice, regular conversation  They insert their problems every time you talk about your issues  They don’t respect your personal space anymore which you find extremely uncomfortable  They blab your deepest, darkest secrets  They constantly belittle you  You two have no shared interests any more And here’s how you do the breaking up: • If you’d rather do it the honest, upright way, sit them down, tell them you’re ending the friendship and why, listen to their side of the story and decide if you want to move on. • If you’d rather do it the cowardly way, stop going to social events where you’re likely to meet them; put some distance in between – stop calling them, delay responding to their texts, make excuses to not meet them, ignore them online, etc. Who does that? Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox. After being besties for more than a decade, they have apparently broken up. Tabloids reported that Aniston had been snubbing Cox for a while because Aniston’s fiancé, Justin Theroux, wanted her to give up old friends and make new friends instead. quoted a source saying, “Courteney is sick of forgiving and forgetting. She’s been slighted by Jen one too many times now.”

Getting back in touch with a friend after many years can be a good thing What! Why? Come on… don’t tell me you haven’t considered it. Everyone has a long lost friend they want to reconnect with. But how? That’s the tricky part.  If you and your friend drifted apart because of the years, just send them a quick, friendly message by email, phone or Facebook, telling them you’ve been thinking of them and that you must meet up when you can.  Sometimes you’re so comfortable with an old friend that you pick up right where you left off and there’s no awkwardness.  If you parted with bad blood, you have to be more careful. If you two had an argument or a fight and it was your fault, own up to it and apologise in your message before suggesting you two reconnect. If it wasn’t your fault but you want to get back in touch anyway, tell them you feel bad about what happened and that you’d like to put it behind you and move on.  Once you’ve reconnected, keep the friendship alive. Don’t let it slip into

oblivion again. Exchange messages, meet up often and stay in touch. Who does that? Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. They were friends for years until a spat in 2008 lead to five years of cold war between them. At an iftar party last month, the two reconnected, and have seemingly ended their cold war. Let’s hope their friendship lasts this time round.

One-night friendship stands are nothing to be ashamed of

CARINE06, FLICKR

ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE

What! Why? One-night friendship stands are much like one-night stands. What you do is you click with a random person (friend of a friend, or a stranger at a party), have a great evening talking, joking and swapping stories, and then go back to your respective lives. It’s more respectable than a one-night stand, isn’t it? But how? It’s all about the magic of the moment – you have a friend for one night with whom you have a great time, no strings attached. When you slip back into your comfortable life of daily schedules and usual friends, you realise there’s really no place for this person. Who does this? Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. They have known each other since they were 11 because of tennis tournaments, but Murray, in one of his Wimbledon interviews this year, said that they only have a “professional friendship”. They meet only during tournaments and occasionally text each other, otherwise they’re not friends in the conventional sense.

Compartmentalised friendship is the order of the day Friendship reestablished: Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan

What! Why? Today we multiple friend groups – childhood friends, society friends, school friends, college friends, office friends, art/dance/music

class friends, party friends, movie friends, etc – as a result of our varied interactions. And never do we meet or hang out with these groups all at once because, obviously, it’s too many people and not everyone gets along. But how? Nobody can keep up with so many people at the same time. You meet with your different groups at different times to talk about different things – you compartmentalise your social life. Each group serves one interest of yours. And it’s not weird. That’s how friendships work in the 21st century. Who does that? Angelina Jolie. When she wants to talk to someone about the issues in her life, she turns to Brad Pitt. When her kids want

to hang out with other star kids (like Gwen Stefani’s, because they’re friends) she goes on play dates with those stars. Otherwise, Jolie admits, she is “not very social”.

Your circle of freinds is an autocracy… and you don’t realise it What! Why? Analyse your group of friends very, very closely. Isn’t there one person who calls the shots on everything? One person who finalises all activities? One person who takes charge of the WhatsApp group? One person who decides who is and who isn’t allowed in the group? Yeah, thought so.

But how? Some people are natural leaders. And people always need a leader; it’s instinctive. Here are some signs you play follow-the-leader:  You and your friends all use the same ‘lingo’, but you remember a time when you didn’t talk like that  Whenever plans are made, you all look to one person to approve of them  Every time someone says something funny or shares an interesting story, they want a certain person in the group to hear it Who does that? The Beatles. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were good friends offstage, but it was obvious that Lennon was the alpha male of the group. In fact, many people say that his marrying Yoko Ono and changing his interests broke the group up. That’s how influential he was. yi AUGUST 2013 Youth Incorporated 63

Mumbai-Goa Distance: 677 km

Weapon of choice: Any car or bike that keeps you comfortable. A vehicle with strong torque is recommended to overtake heavy vehicles on the highway. Why you should do this: Goa is one spot where the destination could potentially outshine the journey. That’s not to say that the journey will be difficult – far from it, actually. Boasting one of the smoothest highways in the country, the Mumbai to Goa road trip is the ideal way to get to those beautiful beaches. The highway passes through long stretches through Maharashtra’s hinterland, interloped with a moderate ghat section that a driver will enjoy.

Pit stops: Besides the ghats, you also pass the famous Karnala Bird Sanctuary and the scenic beauty of river Vashisti. If you’re the type who likes to make the most of the trip then you could take a slight detour and visit the unspoilt beaches of Ganpatipule and explore the village of Malvan, which has the historic Sindhudurg fort built by Shivaji. If you’re travelling in summer aka mango season, make sure you pick up the famous Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes along the way. HIMANSHU SARPOTDAR, FLICKR

oad trips in India were once exclusively for those longhaired, Bullet-riding men. And truck drivers. The lack of comfortable long haul bikes or cars, coupled with roads that rivalled the moon’s surface and highway hotels that would make a visit to your in-laws seem exciting, meant that you took a road trip only if you were fed up with society or had to get away from a really annoying girl/boyfriend. But now we have four and six-lane highways, street cattle are at an all time low, and GPS and smart phones give you directions to the nearest McDonald’s. This means the time is ripe to pack your bags, fill up your tanks and laugh at the ridiculous road signs that the Highway Authority of India puts up.

Delhi-Manali-Leh Distance: 1018 km PRABHU B, FLICKR SANKARA SUBRAMANIAN, FLICKR

Weapon of choice: An SUV (preferably with 4-wheel drive) or a Royal Enfield Why you should do this: This route is the big daddy of Indian road trips. This route has gained fame with the challenges it throws and the rewards it offers upon successfully accomplishing them. While the Delhi to Manali ride is relatively easy and affords you great views, the Manali to Leh trip is undoubtedly the toughest. Manali-Leh has the highest roads to navigate in the world and only opens in June. Though it can be exhausting and unpredictable, you will return with an experience of a life time. Pit stops: This route is known for its breathtaking and spectacular views of the Himalayan hills, valleys and glaciers. Stop at any chai shop and the view should make your day. There also a number of Buddhist monasteries along the way that serve as a good resting point for a breather. AUGUST 2013 Youth Incorporated 65

Weapon of choice: This route does not have the greatest of roads and some stretches are prone to landslides. Make sure your vehicle is sturdy and not too fussy. Why you should do this: The east of India is not very well represented as a tourist destination. Not many people know about the natural beauty or the land’s rich cultural heritage that make this region a fabulous tourist spot. Pack in your rain gear because you will be visiting the wettest spot on the planet at Cherrapunji. The drive starts at the Golden City of Jaisalmer which houses palaces and ornate Jain temples, and ends at the forests of Ranthambore where you might just spot a tiger in the wild. Pit stops: Make sure you visit the old city of Jodhpur where you are taken back in time to the era of Rajputs. Next on the agenda is the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur. The final leg of the trip will take you to the green fertile hunting grounds of the kings, Ranthambore. Aishwarya-Abhishek to come together for Masoom remake

kiss&tell _FOCUS FEATURE

Check out Hrithik’s poem to his sons Hrithik Roshan, while recovering from his surgery last month, dedicated some time to his kids while posting a small poem dedicated to them on his Facebook wall. “Innocence inspires so silently and discreetly and yet all so powerfully! Missing my sons. (I’m not allowed to see them yet..). The following words I write for them inspired BY them...And wish to hear it from them someday.... If I could fly... i’d fly my highest. When I can run... i’ll run my fastest. If I walk... i’ll walk my tallest. If I stand... i’ll stand my strongest. If I need to sit... i’ll sit with my head up. If I must sleep... i’ll soar above clouds in my mind. If I can...I will. I can. So I will. I’m Great. No matter what.” If you’re wondering what prompted this sudden emotion flow, well it was a small but mighty effective get well note Hrithik received from his kids. The actor who is India’s first onscreen superhero, is definitely the biggest real life hero for his kids.

Aishwarya-Abhishek to come together for ‘Masoom’ remake Himesh Reshammiya has been awfully low-profile these days. Quietly we hear he has negotiated for the remake rights of Shekhar Kapur’s 1983 classic Masoom which starred Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi as a couple grappling with the reality of an illegitimate son in the husband’s life. Now 30 years later, Himesh Reshammiya has bought the remake rights of Masoom, which will be directed by Bedobrata Pain. What's more, Himesh has zeroed in on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan to play the two roles immortalized by Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah. According to a very reliable source, Abhishek and Aishwarya have agreed in principle to be in Himesh's remake. “Now, the details are being worked out,” says the source.

MISA’S FUGUE

Frank Grunwald: An account of how art and music helped Grunwald survive the trauma of the Holocaust. A high school media professor, along with his students, decided to document Grunwald’s experiences during the Holocaust, which included living in various concentration camps. Misa’s Fugue, while heartbreaking in its tragedy, is ultimately testament of human survival and endurance.

WOODY ALLEN: A DOCUMENTARY

10

Woody Allen: The talented, quirky, neurotic, self-confessed recluse finally agreed to be filmed for a two-part doumentary. The exact volume of Woody Allen’s work, ranging from film scripts to short stories is almost as incomprehensible as his eccentric mind. In this documentary, Woody’s peers describe him as ‘gifted’, ‘intelligent’, ‘not normal’, ‘an idiot’ and ‘a little nutty’. Highly recommended for writers, actors, comedians, filmmakers, anyone with creative pursuits and of course, Woody Allen fans.

8

Mariel Hemingway: Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter reveals details about the family’s history of depression and suicide, while battling her own demons. Seven members of the Hemingway family lost their battle with depression and committed suicide. Mariel’s revelations about her family's fight with depression, including that her grandfather, celebrated writer Ernest Hemingway, is a bold attempt at understanding mental turmoil.

RUNNING FROM CRAZY

MARLEY

Bob Marley: The story of the music legend as told by some of his closest friends and relatives. This documentary captures the charm, the rhythm, the soul and the compassion that was characteristic of Marley’s music and his life, while exploring related themes of Jamaican culture, Rastafarianism and reggae music. Marley fans will relish the unknown facts and unheard music unveiled in this film.

MAN ON WIRE

West Indian cricket team of the 1970s: How one team managed to dominate world cricket in the seventies. This one is more thrilling than a World Cup final. It’s no secret that in the world of cricket, the drama continues off the field. Fire in Babylon captures the drama that took place on and off the field in the seventies when the Windies formed their indomitable team of fast bowlers to end the Australian rule on the cricket field.

Timothy Treadwell: This quirky, entertaining man filmed his interaction with his beloved grizzly bears in Alaska. Treadwell was ultimately killed by one of them. “If I die, if something happens to me, make that movie. You make it. You show ’em.” This was Treadwell’s message to his friend and co-founder of Grizzly People, an organisation that propagates the fair treatment of bears. Treadwell’s story, most of which consists of footage shot by Treadwell himself, is now an award-winning documentary. This is one story you will never forget. Sixto Rodriguez: The musician who was unaware of his own success for nearly thirty years. A must-watch for music lovers and musicians. Never heard of Sixto Rodriguez? That’s not surprising since most of the world had never heard of this failed American musician with two unsucessful albums. However, in South Africa, Rodriguez aka Sugar Man (named after his popular single) gathered a mammoth fan following. One such fan embarks on a mission to find Sugar Man; what follows is a fairy tale involving fate, redemption, humility and great music.

FIRE IN BABYLON

THE MOST HATED FAMILY IN AMERICA

Westboro Baptist Church: The family that pickets funerals of dead soldiers with signs like ‘God hates fags’. Documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux spends three weeks with the Westboro Baptist Church, popularly known as ‘the most hated family in America’, in an attempt to understand their controversial beliefs. You might want to count the number of times you shake your head in disapproval/ disgust/disappointment as you watch this.

Philippe Petit: A man in possession of an incredible talent and an incredibly reckless spirit, who decided to perform a high-wire walk between the World Trade towers. Man on Wire features in almost every top ten list involving documentaries. And why wouldn’t it? The film documents the preparation and unfolding of Petit’s unbelievably risky, borderline illegal plan to walk across the World Trade towers with no harness. Watching Petit aggressively follow his outlandish dream will definitely inspire you to follow yours.

1

Aryton Senna: The Formula One champion whose victories, rivalries and techniques make for a gripping, memorable watch, even for those who are not fans of the sport. Director Asif Kapadia manages to tell the Brazilian racer’s story, who died tragically during one of his races, with commendable skill. The documentary relies heavily on footage from various interviews, press conferences, races as well as the family’s personal videos, making you less of a distant viewer and more of a participant in Senna’s dramatic life. 15 minutes of daily exercise can spruce up your fitness level without taking a step out of your home. Short bursts of intense exercise can deliver many of the health and fitness benefits of hours of conventional exercise, finds Pravya Pravin MODEL: POOJA

JAISWAL

1

First start with a warm up by jogging lightly on the spot for a few minutes. This does not have to be intensive, so no high knees or jumping is required. Rotation of wrists and ankles can also be done. (3 minutes)

2

Move on to jumping jacks, the cardio exercise, by standing straight with your feet together, then jumping out to the sides, just wider than shoulder width apart, while lifting your hands upwards. When landing, bend your knees slightly. (2 minutes)

3

Get into a regular push-up position, with your heels against the wall. Do as many push ups as you can. This helps the arms, shoulders and chest. (2 minutes)

4

Next target the abdominals by doing crunches. Lie flat on your back with knees bent. Place your hands at the sides of your head, elbows pointing outwards. Flex your waist to raise the upper body from the floor. This exercise is a belly beater. (3 minutes)

6

For triceps and calf muscles, set your legs slight apart and do as many squats as you can. Ensure your knees do not go beyond your toes when squatting. (2 minutes)

Stand in front of the stairs and alternate your leading leg on each step. This helps tone the gluteal muscles, which help to make the thighs and buttocks stronger. (3 minutes)

7

Finally, cool your body with a slow jog and then do a couple of stretches. Place one hand on your back and the second on the elbow of your first hand. Pull down on both as much as possible. Rotate your neck slowly and stretch your neck muscles by placing your chin on your chest. Lastly, replenish your body with water.

RELATIONSHIPS

Dating Disorders

A number of things can go wrong in a relationship. While you cannot completely avoid them, you can always try to set things right. Pooja Salvi shares some relationship gyaan and the remedies to your troubles

friend Obsessiivseobrodyer d

Symptoms: Sending a number of texts to your partner without any replies from him/her, constantly calling in spite of knowing that they are busy, asking them for their Facebook/ Twitter passwords to check on their personal messages, checking their

their passwords because that will be invading their privacy.

MEET MY EXPECTATIONS!

Symptoms: Need to establish cordial relationships with your partner’s family/friends, expecting him/her to

72 Youth Incorporated AUGUST 2013

72 Relationships.indd 72

25-07-2013 19:04:13

spend a lot of their time and money on you, or something more drastic – embracing your partner’s religion. Effect: Irritation, he/she may completely avoid communication or may get stressed. Remedy: Discuss your expectations with your partner. Be a little understanding of their situations and don’t expect them to bend according to your needs. “Girls need too much of time. If I tell her I’m busy and that I’ll talk to her later, she gets upset and then expects me to call her up and apologise for it. This is so irritating! Was it even my fault in the first place?” says Taha Sayed.

SEX! SEX!! SEX!!!

Symptoms: You cannot wait to gets into your partner’s pants, you prioritise sex, you ‘sext’ every time you pick up the phone to text them. Effect: It can gross out your partner by making you look desperate. Remedy: Sex is a very big step in a relationship. Before doing something that you might regret later on, make sure it is worth it. Have a proper conversation about it before rushing into anything. If your partner is uncomfortable about the entire idea, talk to them about it instead of forcing it on them.

I DON’T TRUST YOU. NO, WAIT! I DO. MAYBE. Symptoms: Constantly nagging them with questions (where, with whom, why, how), getting insanely jealous, feeling insecure, checking e-mails/ messages/contacts. Effect: This can not only hurt them but they might also resort to lying to escape your interrogation. They may feel suffocated and irritated because of too much interference. Remedy: Find out if the reason behind your being insecure is really your partner. If not then you have certain issues to solve first.

BABY, YOU ARE THE WORLD TO ME!

Symptoms: Spending way too much

time with your partner, doing things for them by going out of your way. Effects: Your partner might think that this is invading their personal time/space. They may feel suffocated and irritated. Neglecting yourself also has adverse effects on you – their friends become your friends, and you have no interests of your own. If by chance you break up, you are left all alone with no chances of recovering. Remedy: Try spending some time apart. It is not only healthy for the relationship but also healthy for you as an individual. Plan a day out with your own friends and spend time with them – go shopping, go out to a pub. Don’t keep your life confined to your partner alone. Drishti Valecha, 20, says, “While neglecting yourself in the relationship you don’t realise that you are neglecting other important things as well, like your studies or your friends. You start loving yourself a little less and moulding your priorities around your partner.”

YOU WANNA FIGHT? GAME ON, BABY!

Symptoms: Picking fights for no reason, going off topic during an argument or using tears/emotions to win a dispute. Effect: This is really stressful not only for your partner but also for yourself. Constantly fighting for no reason means that you both have unresolved issues as a couple. Remedy: Try talking things over and discussing about the problems instead of having irrational and pointless arguments.

I DON’T WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH YOUR FRIENDS

Symptoms: Escaping meeting/talking to their friends, making excuses to avoid outings with them, acting cold and arrogant when around them. Effect: Not being friendly enough may disappoint your partner. Remedy: You can try being a little friendly even if you are shy or reserved. There’s no harm hanging out with

YOUR PARTNER IS A KEEPER IF...  They aren’t embarrassed about introducing you to their friends or including you in their outings.  Even if what you like might not be their favourite thing, they are always willing to give it a try.  They encourage and support you in pursuing your dreams.  Your friends enjoy being around him/her.  You are both able to communicate about your feelings and needs honestly without a horrible fight.  You are capable of doing your own thing from time to time without the other becoming irrationally jealous, suspicious or angry.  Most importantly, he/she makes you laugh! your partner’s friends. If at all you are uncomfortable around his/her friends, let your partner know.

TIME FOR A LITTLE CHANGE

Symptoms: Not liking that shirt he wears or him hanging out with the women she detests or the dark red lipstick she puts on or her wearing short clothes. Effects: This cannot really be taken by your partner in a positive manner. They can get offended and feel that they are probably not able to keep you happy. Remedy: Dropping subtle hints asking him/her to get rid of their habits is not the remedy. There are two things that can be done – if you value being with them, adjust and appreciate the way they are. If not, get over it already. yi AUGUST 2013 Youth Incorporated 73

LAH L U D AB A H ALIS

Alisha Abdullah has the unique distinction of being India’s only woman super bike racer and the fastest Indian woman car racer too. Alisha started racing when she was nine and was winning go-karting races by the time she was 11. She has raced in the National Superbike Championship, the Rotax Karting Challenge, as well as the Volkswagen National Polo Cup

Tell us about your most memorable racing moment?

The best moment had to be when I finished third in the championship despite a very bad accident on my 600cc bike.

What would you choose, MotoGP or Formula 1? Definitely MotoGP. It’s a very dangerous sport. A sport that I could kill for just to be there.

What bike according to you is the perfect track machine?

It depends and varies. I love Hondas because they are small and compact for me.

What is your dream racing track?

It has to be Suzuka in Japan for bikes and Silverstone in England for car racing.

Among all the forms of racing that you have competed in, which did you find the most challenging? Racing with superbikes without a doubt; it’s close to a nightmare. And the second would be the Rotax Karting Championship which

83 Rising Star.indd 87

I’m currently competing in. They have one of the fastest go karts in the world.

the sensation and would do anything to get that feeling that in my body.

If not racing what would you do?

A long straight road or twisties up the hill?

I love tennis and I think I would be a tennis player.

What is the biggest challenge as a woman racer? Facing critics. The way people look at you, the way they speak to you just because you are a woman. I thank them all though because they have made me stronger today.

Who is your favourite Indian racer besides your father?

I really don’t look up to anyone. I learn from every racer I meet. Every racer has their own way of racing. I grasp and grab whatever I can from everyone.

What is the one aspect of racing that thrills you? Oh my god, it’s the speed. I just love

A long straight road any day. Only because I can test the maximum capability of the bike or car I’m using and boast to my friends about the speeds I touch! The last was when I raced my own bike and hit 250 km/h. yi

Three vehicles you would love to have in your garage? An Audi R8, a Ducati 848 and a Porsche Panamera

Name two people you would love to race against?

Lewis Hamilton for sure, as he is my dream racer. I would not want to race against but with him so that I can get few tips from his side and Jorge Lorenzo in MotoGP. AUGUST 2013 Youth Incorporated 87 25-07-2013 19:46:01

OF MAGIC, WONDER AND A POND THAT IS ACTUALLY AN OCEAN It’s been a really long time since a book has absorbed me in its tale. I can’t remember the last time that I wished to spend every free moment wandering through a book’s pages. Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean At The End of The Lane gave me that feeling. It’s the kind of book that makes you fall in love with the art of storytelling all over again. The novel follows a man’s journey back to his village to attend a funeral. He then remembers snippets of his past and the story then takes you back to his childhood, particularly to the strange and magical events that unfold after the death of a man who lived with the protagonist’s family. I would describe the book as a fairy tale for adults, for while Gaiman leads you on an Enid Blyton like tour of a magical Essex village, adult themes of love, death and greed are subtly juxtaposed in between. Gaiman is a wonderful story teller whose words and characters grip you like a sudden cold wind on a sunny day. He shows you glimpses of different worlds devoid of space and time and reminds you of the innocence and wonder of being a child in an adult world. -Nathaniel D’Costa

PLACES AND EVENTS FOR THE MONTH

SOUL SOUFFLE, GOA Located within the hinterland of South Goa’s serene Verna village, Soul Souffle boasts of a natural spring to keep you company while you feast on some great continental cuisine. CUISINE: While it serves a bit of everything, continental is what you should go for FOOD AND DRINKS: Indulge yourself on the many exotic cocktail mixes while you wait for your food. Try their Sangria which will set the tone for the rest of the day or their creative mixes of local liquor that you wont sample anyplace else. The food is to die for and the presentation is rather spectacular. Go for the Cordon Bleu which will seduce your senses, or go wild with the butter garlic crab. Just remember to keep the cutlery away for this one. OVERALL IMPRESSION: Visit Soul Souffle when you have a nice, long, lazy day ahead of you. Enveloped by the sounds of gushing spring water, this place is perfect to completely rejuvenate your senses. Make sure you carry a pair of shorts for a dip in the spring. LE CAFÉ, MUMBAI Le Café is not so much a café as it is a full-fledged restaurant. It serves a combination of ‘café’ food – breakfast items and sandwiches – fast food items like pizzas and pastas, and proper meals like stews and shepherd’s pies. CUISINE: European, West Asian FOOD AND DRINKS: Make sure your stomach is entirely empty when you visit, because the portions are massive and more than sufficient for two people. However, there is more variety in the non-vegetarian items. We tried the crispy fried potato skins which lived up to their name and were lip-smackingly delicious; the Cajun chicken skewers which were infused with a multitude of flavours; the Sicilian risotto which was scrumptiously spicy; and the gluten free chocolate gooey and the blueberry cheesecake, both of which were rich and satisfying. OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is a great place to test your tastebuds with lesser known Arabic, Lebanese and Mediterranean dishes. Go with a group of friends to split the dishes and save on your pocket money. G 42, Phase II, Ground Floor, R City Mall, LBS Marg, Ghatkopar West, Mumbai - Aparna Sundaresan

POLLY ESTHERS, MUMBAI

Polly Esthers , one of Mumbai’s oldest nightclubs has re-opened. This popular nightclub located in south Bombay is retro in its feel and is suitably decorated. CUISINE: There is quite a lot of variety when it comes to food, however, Chinese is the popular pick along with finger food. FOOD AND DRINKS: As can be expected of a nightclub, Polly Esthers offers a wide range of choices across all of its drinks. Drinks are on the expensive side. If hungry, one can head down to the hotel’s noodle bar. The flaming shots (mostly tequila) are popular picks of the young crowd. OVERALL IMPRESSION: Spacious and well decorated interiors (lava lamps, mirrored walls) make it a nice alternative to the other smaller nightclubs in the city. Even after renovation, the nightclub retains the 70s feel, and has added hip hop, R&B and commercial house to its music repertoire. What is unfortunate, though, is the prices. The club charges `1500 per couple and pairs of women. The Gordon House Hotel, 5, Battery Street, Apollo Bandar, Mumbai - Soham Bhaumik
