Editor-in-Chief NITISH SHAH nitish@youthincmag.com

It’s that time of the year again—roses and cakes, candlelit dinners and movie dates, kisses and hugs; most of you are gearing up to celebrate Valentine’s Day. But, has our society accepted that Valentine’s Day is a festival of love and not a threat to culture, or worse, immoral? In this month’s Special Feature, ‘Make Love not War’, we take a look at how there has been a surge in the number of attacks on couples, especially on 14 February, by self-appointed moral police in the name of upholding Indian culture and maintaining public decency. How valid are their reasons? While we aspire to be as developed and economically forward as Shanghai or New York, we’re still stuck on insecurities about our culture being eroded and invaded by foreign elements. Can’t we have the best of both worlds—to be rooted to our culture and also welcome new changes? Our Prodigy of the month is Bhakti Sharma, the 24-year-old open-water swimmer set the world record for swimming 1.4 kilometres of the icy cold Antarctic Ocean in just 52 minutes. Being the first Indian woman to manage this feat, she was also congratulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee. This is a big step up for India’s youth as Modi’s 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' kicks into action, proving that the girl child is as important and capable as her male sibling. She has made India proud and has inspired young girls to push their limits and fulfil their dreams. Cricket lovers, you’re in for a treat this month, as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 rolls around the corner. To get you warmed up for the biggest sporting spectacle of the year, we give you a run-down on everything you need to know in our Cover Story, Cricket Crazy: who will surprise us, who will be in form, the promising teams and the potential disappointments, the players and the rankings. Whether you’ll be looking for the perfect place for a date or the perfect spot on the couch to watch the World Cup, here’s wishing you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

WITH INDIA’S GENERAL ELECTIONS SCHEDULED FROM 7 APRIL TO 12 MAY, YOUTH INC DISCUSSES THE POLITICAL PARTIES, MANIFESTOS AND ISSUES WHICH WILL DECIDE THE RULING PARTY AND LIKELY FUTURE PRIME MINISTER OF THE COUNTRY

ost young Indians look at politics with a certain disdain. What they fail to realise is that politics is part-and-parcel of everyday life. The people we elect to power today will decide the policies of tomorrow which will result in the changes in our quality of life, the amount we spend for our amenities, the likelihood of better infrastructure, the number of schools that will be opened and more. All this stems from policies made by the central government and budget allocations made in accordance. Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally, directly or indirectly, through elected representatives in the proposal, development and creation of laws. The backbone of a democracy is thus voting citizens. Voting isn’t just a right; it is a responsibility. Voting for the right party will bring the right candidate to power as the head of the nation. Universal suffrage should therefore not be treated as a luxury but be exercised by every citizen over 18 years. The elections will be held from 7 April to 12 May in 9 phases across 543 constituencies. The Election Commission of India (ECI) will organise the elections and announce the result on 16 May. The process might be daunting to a first-time voter; we have thus explained the process, analysed the philosophies that drive parties, represented the needs of the youth and estimated the issues that will cause a young Indian to vote a particular party and their representative to power.

Hands-On

Industrial visits are a great way to get an insight into what your dream job involves. Neeti Vijaykumar takes a look at the rising trend in India

U

nlike our parents’ generation, we have so many more career options to choose from. We’re lucky that we have a list of diverse career options and luckier still that the universe is being nice to us by preparing us in every possible way to make the transition from education to career as smooth as possible. The idea of an industrial visit (IV) or an educational tour is not new in India; a lot of the IIT and IIM institutes as well as other colleges and universities organise tours that give their students a feel of the prospective industries they

might join after college. However, this trend is opening out to include students from all fields and careers of all kinds. Industrial visits and educational tours are tools you can use to get an exposure into the industry or career you’re keen to grow in. There’s no dearth of where you can go to learn about the potential company or industry you want to get involved in. Whether it’s a milk-producing factory in a rural village, a scuba diving start-up at a picturesque beach, a bioengineering lab belonging to a highend pharmaceutical corporation or the

sets of a television serial, today mostly all kinds of organisations are open to giving students a feel of their workplace.

Agencies specialising in IVs

Apart from the planned visits organised by colleges and universities, many travel agencies have taken the plunge into arranging educational trips for students. There are also a few start-ups that specialise solely in making industrial visits a fun and informative adventure. These agencies can give you, as an individual, the freedom to choose the time, place and itinerary to follow. Purple Squirrel is one such a venture.

The impact

Through a user-friendly app and a website, founders Aditya Gandhi and Sahiba Dhandhania provide experiential learning tours that are tailor-made to a student’s classroom syllabus. Funiskool, a New Delhi-based educational tours operator that was founded in 2007, has a special NASA tour package for students, besides a range of other kinds of industrial tours across India. Vikram Kirtani, product head at Funiskool says, “An industrial visit can help a student get an idea about how the industry is changing. By interacting with the HR and other professionals, he or she can gauge the future changes in technology and acquire an understanding of the past of the industry as well as the present.” Samarth Tours, a travel agency founded in Mumbai in 2004, has educational tours to various industries

based in urban centres as well as off-beat vacation places such as Mahabaleshwar, Chandigarh, Mysore, Ooty, Goa and Nainital. From big corporations such as Wipro, Pepsi, BHEL, Dabur and ISRO, there are also visits to marble factories, ship yards and cottage industries in Rajasthan. An industrial visit is not just about touring a factory and getting a lesson on how it works. It also involves meeting delegates, talking to representatives of the industry who could be potential mentors, and exchanging information about the trends in the industry. And, to take it further and add an element of fun, companies like Purple Squirrel also includes non-academic activities and games for students and corporate employees in their after-work hours.

Students have always come out of such tours with a better understanding of their field of work and the kind of environment they’ll be working in. It gives them an idea of their work roles, the hierarchy in the organisation and the kind of people they will be interacting with. Such an exposure is important so that you can decide whether this is what you really want to do in life. For Yash Sharma, a student of Electronics & Telecommunication at the SIES Graduate School of Technology, Nerul, his visit to Larsen & Tubro was a great experience filled with learning opportunities. He says, “The real shop-floor experience was helpful in understanding the concept of fabrication and assemblies in a production line. The principle of ‘Safety First’ was very visible in the industry. Even a motivating speech by the Assistant General Manager had really inspired us.” It’s not just students who have all the fun. Even organisations and professionals who interact with them discover what makes the younger generation tick. Mohan Kumar, CEO of Trendwise Analytics, was delighted to connect with students in a tour of his organisation. “I think this is a great initiative which will add tremendous value to the students,” he says adding, “One of the challenges the industry faces today is that a majority of the students graduating out of colleges are not employment ready. This initiative will go a long way in filling that gap. I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with the youngsters!” Make the most of these visits by engaging with the employees, both young and experienced, as they’ll have several stories to share. What you learn in the classroom is not an accurate reflection of what your work environment will be like. An industrial visit is essential as it gives you the chance to see how you can apply your classroom lessons to the professional sphere that you strive to be a part of. B

Are you up for an ‘Eduventure’?

ridging the gap between the academic world and industrial experience, Purple Squirrel founders Aditya Gandhi and Sahiba Dhandhania believe in giving students all the exposure they can so that they make informed decisions about what career they want to take up. “Purple Squirrel is a recruitment term used to describe an ideal job candidate, someone with the qualifications that perfectly fit the job’s multi-faceted requirements,”

say the ex-IIT duo, explaining the idea behind the quirky name. In an interview, they give us an insight as to what a typical industrial visit is like and how it helps students make the right choice. How did the idea for starting such a venture come up? Have you ever been on such an industrial visit (IV) that helped you think of the same? During the course of our individual work lives, we noticed an undercurrent

of frustration in professionals of all age groups and industries pertaining to the professional choices they made. Two out of 10 were actually doing what they believed in, while barely four out of 10 were strongly holding themselves back from jumping jobs. After some research, we found that making unhealthy career choices was the major problem. The idea for starting Purple Squirrel Eduventures came to us when we were looking for a solution to nip this in the bud. We

18 Youth Incorporated FEBRUARY 2015

16 Focus feature.indd 18

1/27/2015 8:53:40 PM

figured that a potential work-force, who makes more informed choices by experiential learning and work culture immersion, could and should be the future of our nation. More than 10,000 experiences, 350 partners and 10 destinations later, we’re proud to say that it was the most fulfilling idea we’ve had till date. How will these industrial visits/tours help students understand what career to choose? The industrial visit is very carefully designed to suit the curriculum a student is studying in his classroom environment. By making the industry his classroom, we essentially ensure that students make more informed decisions about the choices out there. They get to decide whether they like what they see, and listen to what it’s going to be like from the very people who work in that environment. After this, they will be in a better position to decide if they’d like to take up a job in an MNC, work for a social enterprise, join their family business or even start something by themselves. Which industries/professions tours are offered by you as of now? Do you include social work, entrepreneurship and off-beat careers (such as scuba diving or DJ)? Absolutely. We’re all about giving the student exposure to every kind of option there is. From unconventional careers like wine sommeliers, to taking a look at the backend of how an NGO functions, informative walks across the offices of up-and-coming start-ups, to learning how a bottle of Coke is produced by going through its bottling plant — we have it all. Media, engineering, bio-con, IT, cloud computing and entertainment production are just some of the industries covered by us. A student is free to make his decisions and then chalk himself his most ideal path. What happens in a typical industrial visit—what does a student get to see, whom do they meet and interact with,

and what activities (if any) are they engaged in? A typical industrial visit is a study tour that is crafted entirely based on the student’s classroom learning. Relevant companies, start-ups, enterprises and speakers are contacted and an itinerary is set such that it spreads comfortably across the next few days. At the visit, the students get to interact with corporate delegates who are on-the-job and actually see what they can expect in a work environment. An info-seminar is organised for them with diligent speakers and a substantial Q&A session lets them further have their fill of exposure to the industry. This ensures that the student gets enough time to soak in all that he sees, as well as enough time to leave him rested for the next day. After official work hours in most organisations, academic team-building activities are organised to keep these students engaged. Various activities include impromptu theatre performances that are scripted around college life, Scrabble or Pictionary tournaments, dance sessions or even DIY workshops.

How are these tours planned for individual students? Any student can log on to our website or app, and simply profile themselves via a questionnaire. Our app then determines what the student will experience on this IV based on his choice of demographic, industries and even faculty. These are then layered with engaging activities, and a customised itinerary is generated. The student makes his payment in full or opts for COD. What has been the general response from students who have gone on these tours? The response is what makes all of it worth it. Take the case of a batch of bio-con students who visited SAMY Labs; they came out with a completely reversed mindset. They said that they had never considered a full-time job in their core area of study, let alone one that gives them access to a lab and offers work on the actual research of the drug. From life-changing statements to healthy feedback on what more they’d like to see when they undertake their next eduventure with us, we get them all. yi FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 19

A

s the world celebrates Valentine’s Day this month with gifts, cakes, fancy dinners and walks under a moonlit sky, most of us in India will have an eye open for cops or mobs armed with sticks. While corporations eke out whatever they can out of the occasion, our moral brigade is preparing themselves to look for the tiniest hint of ‘moral degradation’. About 10 days before the dreaded Valentine’s Day, cops, politicians, college and school authorities, and sundry others warn us about ‘not indulging in overt celebrations’ on that day. We’re all familiar with the sudden increase in the number of cops out on the streets — not for our security or safety but to stop and penalise us in case we indulge in what they consider indecent behaviour. This indecent behaviour could include anything from a peck on the cheek to walking hand in hand with your loved one. In student-dominated towns like Pune, there are even prohibitory orders that prevent more than five people from assembling together, aimed at anti-Valentine’s Day protestors, and warnings that couples engaging in ‘indecent behaviour’ will invite strong action. In Chennai, couples (regardless of how they’re related to each other) are questioned and driven away from beaches and public spaces by cops. When you make a list of all the reasons and threats that our selfappointed guardians of moral values come up with, it comes off as though they’re daft and have absolutely no connection with reality. From threatening to ‘marry off couples seen on the street’ to burning effigies and Valentine’s Day cards, shutting down stores selling Valentine’s merchandise and blackening couples’ faces, their campaigns to ‘protect Indian culture’ have become ridiculous.

THREAT TO CULTURE

When it comes to our personal lives, there seems to be a whole brigade of authorities who know what exactly

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED MORAL POLICING? “We are morally policed almost on a daily basis by people simply because we may have guy friends. It seems as though the only time this is permissible is when you’re in a big group or when the man in question is your husband, brother or in more liberal circles, committed boyfriend.” – Amrita Dasgupta, 23, Delhi is right for us. From the police to politicians, college authorities to housing society members, there are so many elders who take it upon themselves to keep our ever-degrading morals in check. But are they right? Maybe, but mostly not. Why is there such a divide between what we consider to be normal and what they consider to be morally right? The often repeated argument is that we are losing our morals by ‘aping the west’. Perhaps it’s true, we are aping the West; after all, Valentine’s Day is an imported festival, purely globalised and commercialised today. But the festival is about celebrating love, not just with your boyfriend or girlfriend, but with family, friends, and even strangers. Is that a Western concept?

According to the moral police, our ‘immoral acts’ are a threat to public decency. Because, as we all very well know, eve-teasing, hooting and passing comments at women is an honourable act of public decency,

while consensually holding hands with a girl or a boy is too vulgar to even look at. Violence is normal, but anything to do with love and affection is evil. It’s etched into our mindsets; it’ll be a while before we, as a society, can let ourselves go. There’s a law out there that allows authorities to penalise us for engaging in anything that is against public decency. But of course, decency means different things to different kinds of people and is ever evolving; this is what causes so much trouble. But it’s not like we’re asking for freedom to go all out on the streets; what we’re expecting is the freedom for us to choose what to do with our time in our personal lives and to be ourselves. Why is there so much restriction on what we should and shouldn’t do, and why is it dictated to us by people who have no business doing so? Whether it’s about how we should dress, who we should hang out with, where we go, how late it is in the day and what festival to celebrate – we don’t need to be herded around like cattle, lectured on what’s acceptable.

MORAL ATTACKS

Usually, the moral police aren’t pleasant people who will sit you down to explain things nicely, at least in India. A 15-year-old girl recently jumped to her death in Bengaluru because she was suspended from school for ‘being friends with a boy’. In Kerala, a pregnant woman was beaten up by some men for waiting alone at a bus stop and talking on the phone (with FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 21

WILL YOU PLAY IT SAFE THIS YEAR AND AVOID CELEBRATING VALENTINE’S DAY?

her husband; but they refused to believe that), while a man and woman were put into lock-up for a day because they were travelling together on a bike at night. A young girl is interrogated by a group of strangers and accused of being involved in immoral acts. In 2009, women were dragged out of pubs and beaten up for drinking in the infamous Mangalore pub incident that prompted the Pink Chaddi campaign. Such incidents happen almost every day in every part of the country today, and it’s not just reserved for Valentine’s Day. The end of the year 2014 was marked by protests against moral policing down south, mainly in Kerala. The protests came to be called ‘Kiss of Love’. After a number of uncalled for attacks on young men and women by the moral brigade, the enraged youth in major cities of Kerala organised a mass rally of people coming out on the streets to do that sinful thing with their lips. And of

course, there were anti-Kiss of Love protests too, by staunch traditionalists who thought that preventing the peaceful protest by rioting would drive home their point of public decency. Those who had opposed the women in Mangalore drinking at the pub had come up with the brilliant explanation that Valentine’s Day wasn’t about love, but about lust. And lust is against Indian values. The fact that debate about morality in our country primarily revolves around sexuality goes to show how much we’re mentally developed as a society. Does it occur to our moral police that the moral character of a person is made up of more — ethics, manners and attitude towards other people? In that sense, they fail the morality test. Right from using violence to break up peaceful protests to resorting to damaging public property, from attacking innocent unarmed people to blaming and mentally, emotionally harassing victims.

“I’d play it safe to avoid unwanted trouble; especially in the Southern part of India, where people pretend to uphold their heritage by condemning activities that may bring harm to their beliefs and values. So if you’re seen with a girl on V’day, take it for granted that people will try and get you married to her. It’s the moral police who need a makeover, not the public.” – Vinnie, 23, Bengaluru “I will definitely celebrate it because no law can prohibit me from holding a girl’s hand or kissing her on the cheek. It’s love and the police has no business interfering in it.” – Sanil Gosavi, 20, Mumbai

MOVE ON

IS THE YOUTH TODAY REALLY OUT OF THEIR LIMITS MORALLY? “I don’t think the term ‘moral decency’ can be applied in life as a strict rule obviously because it’s so subjective. The only time I think the youth is out of its limits in terms of moral decency is when young men sit around, whistling or singing at and molesting young women.” – Disha Ramanan, 23, student, Delhi

AS A PARENT, DO YOU THINK THE YOUTH NEEDS TO BE MORALLY POLICED AND RESTRICTED FROM GOING OUT ON VALENTINE’S DAY? “I don’t think we should tell the youth how to dress or whom to be friends with, or even not to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We should rather advise or discuss these things with them. It’s all about proper communication and not just laying down rules and expecting them to follow it. It’s wrong to tell the youth not to do something without discussing why.” – Shilpi Gode, fine artist and mother of twin boys, Pune

PIXABAY.COM

Being one of the largest democracies in the world, to develop as a nation and be on par with the others, we have to change our social mindsets accordingly. It’s not that there aren’t moral brigades in the US, Australia or the UK, but they’re still more liberalised and believe in letting the youth practise decision-making and face its consequences on their own. The sexuality of a person (whichever way it swings), the choice to celebrate love, the right to enjoy life like our counterparts in more liberalised parts of the world are individual choices. We’re okay with opinions on morals; but to use violence and forcibly stop people from engaging in their private lives is surely not okay. The right to celebrate Valentine’s Day is certainly not something to pin as the hallmark of a liberal society. But the freedom to make that choice — whether it is to buy a card, gift roses, ask someone out on a date that day or to sit at home and watch movies — would be a more sensible indicator of a free-thinking, reasonable and mature society. yi

FOREIGN SHORES

The College

Confusion After the tedious application process, you’ve successfully applied to your dream schools abroad. Now the acceptance letters would come around, which brings you to the next difficult step of the process: how do you choose between two equally incredible schools into which you’ve been accepted? Nimi Jayachandran takes you through important points to consider while deciding which school to accept

Know Your Requirements

When applying to colleges, students are quick to learn what each college looks for in a potential candidate. The same rule can be applied in reverse, as a potential student, what do you expect to get out of attending a specific school? Jerry Weichman, a clinical psychologist specialising in adolescent counselling, sees students struggling with this every year. He instructs his clients to indentify different aspects of college life and to numerically rank each aspect according to the importance it plays in the students’ life. He adds, “When you get a number out of it, you can see how much more it really weighs on their minds.” Another method to approach selecting a college is to think back to why you applied to each in the first place. Erika Coplon, director of the College Admissions Coaching programme at Inside Track suggests, “[Identify] schools that you initially deemed a good fit for you and match this option against other schools.”

Cost and Financial Aid

According to College Board, most students don’t realise how significantly annual tuition differs from school to school. They should take the time to plan out how much tuition, boarding, books, supplies and other necessities will amount to. Most of the time, financial aid offers are sent around the same time as acceptance letters. It is vital to compare costs of the schools and decide accordingly. According to College Board, the annual tuition fees for a public four year college on average costs about $20,000 and for a private college it’s around $35,000. Furthermore, if a student is receiving a scholarship or any financial aid, it is important to understand the nature of the award. “Reach out to the financial aid office to understand exactly what is being offered,” says Myra Smith, executive director of finances at College Board, “Grant aids do not need to be repaid, while loan aid does. Many students do not realise this difference.”

Teaching Styles and Learning Methods

Reach Out to Current Students

Long Term Goals

If You’re Still Unsure...

“It’s important that students know what environment they learn and work best in so they can appropriately select a school which caters to their learning style,” recommends Nicolas Tynes, director of College Quest. Some students prefer working in small environments, with more one-on-one interaction, while others thrive in environments where there is more independent studying involved. Whatever the needs are, it is important that the student addresses them and selects a school accordingly. “I found Harvey Mudd College very appealing because of its small and selective classes. It makes us students feel like we aren’t just another number in the system,” says Adithya Jay, a high school senior on his decision to apply to a particular college. “Think about why you are going to this school in the first place. Keep your eye on the end: where do you want to be in your career and financially? All of this has to be weighed,” says Mary Beth Lopresti, the mother of a high school senior who is faced with the decision of choosing a college. You know what your strengths are and what you hope to achieve with them. Look for a college which holds more promise in moulding your strengths to perfection.

Whether going on a campus tour or reaching out via social media, finding current students at the college will definitely give you more insight into making a decision. “Current students will really give you an idea of what life will be like as a student at any given university,” says John Katzman, founder of The Princeton Review. If you are not able to directly visit the campus, the next best thing would be to get in touch with students who currently attend the school. International colleges will inadvertently have social media pages through which you can easily get in touch with students from similar backgrounds with whom you can share your doubts with and get their feedback.

Alright, so you’ve done all the research and made your a list of your pros and cons, but are you still confused about what the right decision is? “Flip a coin,” says Katzman, “if you’re honest with yourself, you’ll know how you want it to land.” On a serious note, remember that you’ve already crossed the difficult part and have been accepted. There is no wrong choice. Don’t rush your decision; review your options and you’ll surely find the best college for you. yi FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 25

YOU!

With recruiters rummaging through social networking profiles of potential candidates, Palak Kapadia shows you how to put your professional foot forward when you’re online

G

one are the days when the only way for recruiters to screen you when you applied for a job was your resume. In the age of omnipresent digitalisation, recruiters can, and do check the profiles of candidates before they make a hiring decision.

Unlike your CV, here you cannot control every bit of information and choose exactly how you want to present yourself. Unfortunately, a lot of people fail to realise just how public their digital selves are. In a bid to get to know as much as they can about you and to determine

whether you are exactly what they are looking for, browsing through your activity online gives them a much clearer picture than a CV does. Read on for our advice on what you should do to get your online act in order before looking for a job.

in your resume. A mismatch between the two might give the recruiter the idea that you may be lying on one of them (or both of them!)

Censor yourself

While Google and LinkedIn are still professional portals, social networks like Facebook and Twitter are more private spaces. Nevertheless, they are still subject to scrutiny, majorly to check if the potential employee would be a good fit for the organisation’s culture. You need to realise that everything you post online will be public and so there is a need for censorship. Ask yourself if you would be okay with that very thing ending up in a major newspaper with your name and picture next to it. No? Well, then it’s probably not a very good idea to post it online.

Opt for Privacy

Facebook has certain handy tools such as privacy settings which allow you to pick who can view the things you post. You could make your profile private as well as use the privacy settings next to individual posts and determine who would you want your audience to be – ‘friends only’, ‘friends of friends’ or ‘public’.

Google yourself (if you haven’t already!)

Searching for yourself on Google is more than just an act of vanity. It puts you a step ahead of your recruiter because that is exactly what they are going to do too. The kinds of results that pop up after a Google search are going to make or mar your first online impression. So make sure you create a LinkedIn profile or create a page about you on your blog to direct them to the kind of online version of yourself that you would like to flaunt.

Match your LinkedIn profile to your resume

Your LinkedIn profile is nothing but an online version of your resume. Ensure that it gets updated with every update

CAVEAT, JOB APPLICANT! If you're planning on applying for a job anytime soon, then make sure you tidy up on these social networking platforms!

Use good grammar

As silly as this may sound, careless grammatical mistakes can be a very strong reason why you may not get hired. Hirers equate use of sloppy sentence structures online with having poor communication skills, which in today’s day and age is a taboo. If you are looking for a job in any field that involves writing, then God bless you. “A friend of mine didn’t get selected at an interview because, well she typed ‘lyk dis’. Ever since I’ve heard about it, the kind of English I use online would make Shakespeare proud”, says Devanshi Jangla, a media student.

Untag from what’s unbecoming

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, the same goes for your online photos. So, the pictures from that crazy party last weekend are best left off social networks during a jobsearch period. If a friend uploads them, untag yourself from the pictures so that they do not appear on your profile.

Don’t rant about past employers

Yes, we know social networks are modern day tools of freedom of expression but rants about past employers will raise red flags for the recruiters. You did it once and you may do it again. FYI, nobody wants their company to be bad-mouthed online.

Create positive content

Instead of looking at your social media profiles as a threat to your job, look at them as another channel to present yourself. Creating positive online content or sharing what is bringing you happiness will always gives you brownie points. After all, who doesn’t like a positive, happy person around office? That being said, it’s also unnecessary to censor so much that you aren’t yourself. You can still speak about what’s interesting, exciting and funny to you, but a little caveat – if you are really keen on landing that job, then feel free to express yourself online, but do so eloquently and with an eye for potentially risky content. yi FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 27

AWARENESS-ADDICTED

The high from drugs is only temporary, but the damage done is not. Neeti Vijaykumar takes a look at its effects and how to get out of it

What starts out as an exciting experiment at your friend’s house party can turn out to ruin your life sooner than you can imagine. Consumed in whatever form — smoke, pills, powder or dissolved in liquids — the effects of all kinds of drugs are nearly the same: a heightened sense of awareness, feeling elated and ‘so alive’. But, here’s a bit of science to break your trip. The more you use chemicals to alter and artificially manufacture feelings of euphoria and wonder, the more likely it is that your brain loses the ability to produce it on its own. In simple words, you can get dangerously hooked on to drugs in no time. It won’t seem like you’ll get addicted the first few times. It would look like you have complete control over yourself which, maybe, you do; it’s not that every person who does drugs is an addict. But, the line between having control and losing it is often blurry. Rupa (name changed), 24, had first tried MDMA at her best friend’s birthday party the week she moved to Mumbai. “It was like something I hadn’t experienced before,” she says, “I felt like I was at the top of

THECHRISTOFF, DEVIANTART

the world.” Soon, as she settled into living in the city, she would go to parties every other day, and tried more kinds of drugs. Within seven months, her sister noticed her peculiar habits: she took leave from work more often, slept all day, felt tired and would be out all night partying. “One day, I blacked out at home and had to be rushed to the hospital. I had just woken up after a night of drugs, and I hadn’t eaten for two days straight.” It had killed her appetite and made her weak. Following the doctor’s recommendation of a rehab, it took her four months of therapy, psychological counselling and diet control for her to get back to her normal self.

Why it’s bad for you

An Indian study found that most young addicts were introduced to drugs by their friends and about 35% got addicted to it after they tried it for fun. Amit Chhabra, counsellor and director of Trucare Trust in Mumbai, explains the trend: “Among the youth, most of them start using drugs for enjoyment. Most of the addicts who are admitted here are college students, some as young as age 16.” The negative impact drugs can have on your health is sometimes irrevocable. Apart from killing brain cells, an addiction can make you feel lethargic and weak, unable to

concentrate and lead to dramatic weight change and impotency. Also, impure, adulterated drugs are a risk; you can never know what else has been mixed into the ‘stash’. Its side-effects can actually make you less productive than your nondrug-abusing peers. There can be many who disagree with this point; they’ll point out to various cultural icons and talk about how they’ve produced most of their best work when they were high on drugs. From Jim Morrison to films like The Rum Diaries and Pineapple Express, there’s a lot of emphasis on how it’s a really ‘cool thing’ to do, along with a lot of half-baked myths circulating on social media. The least evil of all the drugs out there could be marijuana and hash. There are petitions to legalise it in the US based on studies that claim that it’s a recreational drug. But there are always abusers who don’t use it recreationally. The rest, called party drugs, such as cocaine, meth, MDMA, and LSD are second on the list of dangerous drugs. The absolute evil of all, heroine, is best never touched at all. In India, the youth find trouble overcoming their addiction most commonly from party drugs. “Nowadays, we are getting many cases for drugs such as meth and MCAD,” says Chhabra.

The way out

When you feel the unpleasant and terrible urge to get another hit, it could be a sign that you’ve become addicted. Whether it’s the withdrawal symptoms or the temporary low that you experience when the effects of the drugs are wearing off, this is where you need to get help and use all your willpower to not turn back to drugs. It’s easier said than done, but it’s not impossible. Today, Rupa tries to encourage her friends out of their drug habits after getting through the ugly phase of addiction. “During the therapy, I realised how badly addicted I had been; this realisation helped me heal faster, when I knew I was going in the right direction,” she says glad about having come out of the rotten habit. “I now have a normal, clean life. Even if I go partying, I steer clear of drugs. I’ve learnt to enjoy life without the need to get high. All it takes is to be positive.” Chhabra’s Mumbai-based rehab is based in Thane. He also has centres in Surat, Pune and Dehradun. They offer in-patient recovery programmes that include group and individual therapy sessions, counselling, and yoga. According to him, it would take a minimum of three months for an addict to start recovering; it could take longer, depending on the individual. yi FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 31

hat do you do when a stranger bashes you up? What do you do when someone offends your religion, your country, your family, or something really dear to you? What do you do when you feel like you have been wronged, treated unjustly or when you’re fed up of being pushed around? Taking the law into one’s own hands has always been the knee-jerk reaction to being treated unfairly throughout history, especially among the youth. From the hippies who rebelled against war in the 60s to politically-motivated skinheads influenced by neo-Nazi philosophy through the 80s, to the Naxalite fighters in India to the brigade of hacktivists, it’s mostly always bloodraging youth who are notorious for threatening civil peace. It’s not a new craze; rather, this boiling extremism is what led to many protests and revolutions around the world in the past — consider the freedom fighters of India, the youth involved in the Arab Spring and the Cultural Revolution of China. There is, of course, a very fine line between a youth uprising and mindless, misguided violence. While we’re not exactly fighting for freedom from colonialism or oppression at the moment, the growing concern is that there’s an alarming lack of consciousness among certain sections of the youth. They pick up guns to go out in the street and open fire; there are those who use something as simple as a pressure cooker bomb to blow up crowded events, such as in the Boston Marathon attack; attacking people in the name of religious blasphemy, as in the case of the Charlie Hebdo office attacks. Our access to social media has definitely made it easier to round up a group of like-minded protestors and gang up to ‘teach him/her/them a lesson’. But what one often fails to reflect on is the consequence of such unwanted violence: the casualties, the FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 33

collateral damage, the rage it causes in the minds of other youth, the quest for revenge that only leads to more violence. For instance, out of all the (recorded) homicides that happen around the world annually, 43% occur among the youth, according to the WHO. They’re both the perpetrators and the victims of their own violence.

Portal to the dark side

One of the major factors that influence and provoke the youth to indulge in violence could be technology and media. We’re all always connected to technology. Everything is at our finger tips and we have easy access to all kinds of information online. That’s how the Boston Marathon bombers learnt to create the pressure cooker bomb. There can’t be a check on what’s out there on the World Wide Web. Cyber-violence is also mostly attributed to the youth. You know the trolls online who always seem to drop a hate-speech bomb to taunt and tease other people? It’s a form of violence too, one that can have serious psychological impact. Online harassment has also led to a rise in suicides. Under the garb of anonymity, hiding behind a computer screen, it’s easy to work up a storm on the

Who you hang out with can tell a great deal about whether you’re likely to be violent or not internet that could potentially also lead to more violence out in the real world. We’ve had one close to our homes: the Twitter account operated by a Bengaluru-based IT executive, who helped in propagating the ISIS philosophy online. In the same vein, popular video games are well-known for their high levels of violence. Research also shows that youngsters who get addicted to these games start developing a tendency to indulge in violence in real life. And then there’s violence in films and television. We can’t really put a check on reducing violence on our screens without encountering a debate on creative freedom. The only way out is to awaken our own consciousness, and bring about the awareness between fiction and reality.

The fight club

Who you hang out with can tell a great deal about whether you’re likely to be violent or not. Consider the

juvenile who hung out with the drugaddled older men who brutally raped and murdered the girl in a moving bus in New Delhi two years ago. Much debate has gone underway discussing the youth’s innocence, or lack of it; how peer pressure could have pushed him into committing the atrocious crime. It even led to the discussion within the government to bring down the juvenile age to 16, so that anyone over 16 who has committed a crime would be tried in the court of law as an adult. Even if an individual’s conscience tells one that being violent is wrong, one tends to accept it, as at that moment, being a part of a social group holds the highest importance in their life. They believe that being a part of a strong, powerful and even violent friend circle would help them keep their self-image intact and maintain a kind of status. Peer pressure contributes in increasing the level of violence to such an extent that today we have various shows that cover criminal stories of the young. This also brings to light the social menace of substance abuse, which can lead to addiction, and the consequent need to have continuous access to drugs and alcohol. We cannot deny the fact that a lack of strict patrolling at this end has made alcohol and drugs easily available to underage young adults. We have many examples of youngsters who indulge in robbing or physical violence such as murder in attempt to raise money to support their habit. Apart from an overload of information, young impressionable minds have another threat: opportunists who lurk around every corner, looking for vulnerable minds to brainwash and indirectly guide on to the path of violence. There are many measures that are suggested to try to curb violence in the youth. From banning violence on television to controlling web access and amending gun control laws, the onus is on the government and society to teach young people about

What Haider’s mother said

Whenever there are incidences that shatter our notion of peace, we always see youth from different parts of a nation organising rallies, peace campaigns and revolting against it. Have these peace campaigns also just become another fad? Everyone wants to be a part of a peace campaign or a candle march, but that’s where it all ends. It’s a temporary feeling of standing up against wrong and fighting for justice. It takes more than just walking with candles on roads and yelling out for peace and harmony to genuinely work. Every youngster should have a peaceful approach towards life, and also ensure the same among their friends. We must realise that resorting to violence is nothing but a step to selfdestruction. Violence can never be the answer. It only provokes more anger, and the cycle goes on. There are other ways to fight for justice, to vent out frustration and complain and rant; just as the pen is mightier than the sword, our voice and our creative imagination are sharper weapons than the gun. Use that rage and anger into developing long term solutions. Every individual has a frame of reference which acts as a window through which a person looks at the world and believes in various things according to the individual thought process. All one needs to do is to try and change negative point of views. Have a different frame of reference and look, understand and react to personal and social issues a little more sensitively. Build strong roots of good thoughts and high principles. Believe in peace and harmony and let it overrule feelings of violence.

SHOCKING EXAMPLES OF YOUTH VIOLENCE AROUND THE WORLD Boston Marathon bombings On 15 April 2013, Czech brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev used two pressure cooker bombs at the Boston Marathon, which killed 3 people and injured around 264. While they were on hot pursuit, they killed an MIT policeman and a police officer during a gunfight. Tamerlan was injured and eventually got run over by his brother in a SUV, and was pronounced dead on scene.

Colorado shootings There are four shocking incidents that stand out — in 1961, a 14year-old boy shot his classmate with a .38 caliber gun over an argument, while a stray bullet shot and killed another girl. In 1982, another 14-year-old killed a boy younger than him. In 1999, two senior class boys set out on a shooting spree, killing 12 students and one teacher, injuring 21 others. They committed suicide soon after. More recently, in December 2013, an 18-year-old, kicked out of the debate team by a professor, went to school armed with guns and a machete and when he could not shoot her, shot another student.

violence and its side effects. But as youngsters ourselves, it’s us who have to understand what signals violence in our life. In order to understand the importance of peace and harmony, we should know what we want and what the right ways of achieving it are.

Charlie Hebdo attack On 7 January 2015, two masked gunmen barged into the offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris. They fired 50 shots and killed 11 people and injured 11 others. They also killed a police officer and five other people outside the office. They also took hostages while taking refuge at a signage company two days later. The duo were gunned down by the police on 9 January 2015.

The scenario in India While there are miscellaneous incidences of youth rioting and starting fights that escalate quickly, there’s also the political connection that gives them immunity from the fear of consequences of violence. yi FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 35

Who are the most important people in your life who have helped you get to where you are today? My parents, relatives and a small (but supportive) circle of friends and a lot of strangers who contact me via various media. Most importantly, my guru who has taken me through this entire journey. Your mother is also a national level swimmer. How much of an influence or inspiration has she been in your life for you to take up swimming as a sport? She has been the sole reason for me to take up swimming. She has been my coach and mentor ever since the day she taught me how to swim, which was when I was two and a half years old. When I was 14, my mother pitched the idea of swimming the English Channel to me and I decided to give it a shot. I’ve been doing open water swimming since then. How was the transformation from a regular pool swimming champion to someone who set the world record swimming in the Antarctic Ocean? Physically, the transformation was drastic. But, since I was always more comfortable with long events even in pool swimming, I could adjust to open water real smoothly. It required me to increase my stamina, get used to being alone with myself in the water for hours and hours at a stretch and cope up with the fear that comes with jumping in different seas and oceans. I trained my body by swimming non-stop for hours in the pool or in a lake back home. I increased my diet to gain body fat which gets converted into energy during long swims and I trained mostly by my mother's and my instincts. Mentally, I had to train myself a lot as open water is mostly mental strength. For the swim in Antarctica, I prepared myself with the help of meditation.

RAPID-FIRE

QUESTIONS

• The most challenging swim you’ve ever had: Swimming 1.4 miles in Antarctica • What you love most about open water swimming: The beauty of nature and the variety. Each sea is different and teaches me something new. • Proudest moment of your life: When strangers tell me that my swims have inspired them to achieve their goals. • Hobbies: I love to read, watch movies and sleep. How did you manage both studies and swimming? At home, swimming was never an excuse to escape from studies. So, since I was a child, I had been brought up to not take studies lightly. That attitude remained with me throughout my life. So, before exams, my entire focus would be on studies. I could manage to cover up whatever I had missed during the sessions in a short span of time. It was a lot of pressure but nothing that could not be done. I wanted to get into a good college on my own merit and that's what motivated me to top the commerce section of my school in the 12th grade. Likewise, doing a master's in communication was also my wish, so I made sure to work hard for it and over

the two years managed to get a good GPA, (one of the highest actually!) I believe it is always about being sure of what you want to do at that certain point of time and focusing completely on that. You’ve already covered the five oceans of the world. What are your plans now? I have no plans as of now. I wish to stay put in my home town and work for the social cause that I have taken up for the girl child and women empowerment with the help of my sponsor. I am the brand ambassador of the two campaigns that they run – ‘Sakhi’ and ‘Khushi’ and I will be working on their agenda as well. Give us a sneak peak as to what it felt like to achieve this feat.. The logistics of this swim were a major issue and I had gone through a lot of trouble arranging it. So, after a long journey of almost four days, when I boarded the cruise from Ushuaia that took us to Antarctica, I thought to myself, “We have made it so far, this is really happening!” When we started entering the Antarctic peninsula, the view completely changed from seeing water everywhere to ubiquitous icebergs and ice everywhere. It was intimidating at first but the beauty makes you almost weep to see the magnificence of god's amazing creation. It was all very surreal. The journey back home was actually so tiring that for a bit, I had forgotten about the swim (laughs). Do you have other hobbies that keep you busy, or do you devote all your time to swimming? I love to read, watch movies and sleep. So when I am not swimming, I am doing either one of these things. What message do you have for young aspiring swimmers in India? Dare to dream and believe that you have it in you to achieve it. My motto is – Dream. Believe. Achieve. Repeat. yi FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 37

COUNSELLOR Q&A

JAYANTI GHOSE

AFTER CA What further study and specialization options can I target after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and completing MCom? Neha Bhambri The 3 year LLB and 2 year MBA (full time) are typical choices. Think of a part-time MBA after working at an executive position for at least 2 years. Look into the opportunities of training to be an actuary through the Actuarial Study programme offered by the Institute of Actuaries of India or post-graduation in Finance/Financial Economics/ Financial Markets. Continuing education through ICAI should definitely be considered. MPhil and/or PhD in accounting and allied fields would add value to career opportunities in academia and consulting. As an employed CA, certifications by NISM, or international certifications related to finance, accounts, financial/securities markets, CFA, etc. related to your work experience would add value to your resume/CV.

Lifestyle Accessory Design complements and enhances a person’s lifestyle. Research into the way people live and their habits helps such designers create better products, systems, spaces and accessories for them. It would be an umbrella discipline encompassing jewellery, leather goods, giftware, tableware, watches, footwear, handicrafts and lifestyle products. Therefore, you’d have to choose between programmes in accessory design, product design, toy design, jewellery design, leather goods design, footwear design, or craft design. Choices would vary between countries/institutions and the level of education (undergraduate or postgraduate/ graduate).

The possibilities are wide ranging, including LLB, or LLB Intellectual Property Rights, post-graduation in design (industrial, visual communication, etc.), strategic design management, design space, or postgraduate diploma in sound recording, cinematography, photography design, MBA, master’s degree in Economics or Social Work or Human Resource Management, Forensic Science, Digital Forensics & Information Assurance, Cyber Security & Incident Response etc. You need to do your research so that you can shortlist those that would lead you in the direction of your aspirations and interests.

LIFESTYLE ACCESSORY DESIGN How do I pursue studies in Lifestyle Accessory Design abroad? Is it offered as a specialization or is it a specialization within a broader field? Neha and Samar

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS (MIS) I would like to pursue MIS in the US. What are the programmes and what kind of jobs are offered? Manish Pandey Management Information Systems focuses on improving business processes through IT. MS in MIS includes limited general business courses and focuses on developing advanced technology skills as well as the skills to manage that technology. An MBA with a concentration in Management Information Systems focuses more on business courses with some concentrations on MIS related topics. Management roles open more quickly for an MBA than an MS if looking at the IS track and other business functions too. For staying in the technical track for a career goal of CTO, the MS is all you need, but the MBA makes someone more attractive at that level too. Hence, you should focus on MBA or MS depending upon your aptitude.

Truth or

n today’s day and age, media is being consumed in all its forms virtually everywhere. Be it at home or at work or on the move – there are countless ways nowadays to access news and information. With more ways to read news, the demand for talented journalists has increased exponentially. News organizations require well rounded individuals to file stories, produce videos and explain large amounts of information. Journalists are now expected to adapt and be multifaceted. New age journalists will have to understand the different forms of media and embrace ‘digital-first’ reporting, if they want to survive in the constantly evolving and incredibly convoluted world of journalism. It’s still a great time to become a journalist since there is no dearth of resources for journalists to tell their stories. Countless pages of information and sources can be found online with a click of a button. The ‘click and share’ mindset that exists today coupled with the growth of Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat has made each and every one of us a potential news source. Journalists are now faced with the dilemma of ‘making news’ in the rush for ‘breaking news’. In India itself, we have seen how dialogue and reason has been reduced to mere (high decibel) rhetoric in the news space. Paid news is a growing concern not only in

34 Youth Incorporated JANUARY 2015

India, but all over the world. That being said, the media is still one of the most exciting places to be in the 21st century and with India having experienced a rollercoaster of a year in the form of 2014, it’s an industry that’s only headed one way – and that is up! 2014 was truly a huge year for India. It was a year that firmly cemented the media’s role as the fourth estate in the world’s largest democracy. We witnessed an iconic election which was and lost in the media space. India’s M&E Industry reaches 161 million TV households, over 94,000 news papers, nearly 214 million internet users. The numbers might sound massive but they are still a very small percentage of our population of over 1.2 billion people. India’s potential seems infinite and as Indians, our opportunities are endless. But, in today’s media environment, where journalists have become household names, it is imperative that they remember the saying “with great power comes great responsibility”. Journalists must ensure that they act responsibly, efficiently and transparently. Today, journalists and consequently the media play a pivotal role in influencing and being an agent of positive change in society.

ricket is more than just a sport in India. It’s a religion. It’s a way of life. Cricketers are revered like Gods and every victory is celebrated like a festival. Hockey and football are also popular sports in the subcontinent but none of them enjoy the status and respect that cricket commands from millions of Indians. In every gully, field, park and residential complex, children seem to be overawed by cricket. Big match days automatically mean that nobody will be working constructively as all cricket buffs will be glued to the idiot box. Why are we all so crazy about the sport? Is it the history of the game and its imperial roots? Is it one man who defined its fate in India? Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. In a country of over a billion people with so many disparities, this legend of a man has been a source of pride and joy to all of us. Fondly referred to as the ‘God of cricket’, Tendulkar will always be one of the greatest batsmen of all time. For most of us cricket

fans, he’s one of the primary reasons that we all got hooked to the sport. Cricket is one sport that unites people from all other religions in a country as diverse as India. This is that one time when the whole country forgets all their differences and supports our national team. The best thing about this game is that there is no gender discrimination. Men and women of all ages and from all walks of life, young boys and girls are all as kicked to watch a cricket match especially if it’s one from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. Will Virat Kohli’s consistency trump Dale Steyn’s supersonic delivery? Will the innovative AB De Villiers pull a fast one over the world’s tallest cricketer Mohamad Irfan? Will seasoned veterans like Shahid Afridi and Mahendra Singh Dhoni bid farewell to World Cup cricket with that one last triumph? These are questions that hog the minds of cricket fans around the world and that’s why this month’s cover story aims to prepare you for the magnificent spectacle that is the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

he land that invented cricket has yet to win its first World Cup Title, ironically. Over the years, England has displayed some fine cricket that got them to the runners up podium in 1979, 1987 and 1992. What keeps this team in the limelight is the great England-Australia rivalry. Taking a step back in time helps decode what really concocted this rivalry; well, it was The Ashes. The Ashes bring together two nations who are connoisseurs of the fiercest rivalry in cricket history. A sight to see is the travelling ‘Barmy Army’ a.k.a England’s unofficial 12th man, showcasing some strong vocal support with slogans and songs alike. Watch out for Moeen Ali’s all round performance; being a top order batsman capable of playing spinners well, not to forget his lethal ‘sliders’ that can acid test even the most experienced batsmen.

South Africa

ne of the most promising teams in the tournament, yet another one of the teams who haven’t lifted the Cup just yet. With an impressive line-up of players, South Africa promises to be a heady dose of cricket and entertainment. We’d miss good ol’ Robin Peterson and Ryan McLaren from South Africa’s top order. AB De Villiers dons the captain’s cap and assuredly wearing the gloves full time, a world renowned wicket-keeper and batsman, hope is never lost as long as AB is on the white line. David Miller will surely pack a brutal punch! Fast bowler Dale Steyn, with his speed comparable to a Lamborghini on steroids, will surely aid South Africa in its bowling attack.

India! India!”, that familiar cheer brings to mind Kapil Dev’s historic innings in 1983, and in recent times, in 2011, when India was crowned champions at home in Mumbai. Defending champions in this Tournament, they invariably have the bull’s eye on their back! Meeting the expectations of a billion people isn’t going to be easy. With a power packed 15-man squad, handpicked by Indian selectors, this season is going to give Yuvraj Singh a miss for Jaddu a.k.a Ravindra Jadeja. One can’t talk about India and our chances this World Cup without mentioning the tempestuous young lad named Virat Kohli. He has has earned him a rock solid reputation and of course that comes with some serious performance pressure. It’s a real shame that he can’t stay with his lady luck Anushka Sharma. All of us Indian fans (and Anushka fans) empathize with you, Virat! But, don’t you worry child, she’s going to give you enough Jazba from the stands. MS Dhoni will lead India again this year, balancing the team’s enthusiasm and skill sets (not to mention Jaddu’s ego). Previously injured Ravindra Jadeja is back in action, known for his impeccable fielding, this guy can engender a match triumphant, with his electric bolt like batting.

our time World Cup title holders (more than any team in the world), Australia are like a pride of lions dressed in yellow. An entire squad filled with big hitting all-rounders, the team isn’t going to be easy on anyone. A clash with England is certain and almost predictable. This squad has practically all the big names of the cricketing universe associated with them – Shane Watson, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and James Faulkner just to name a few; coupled with high pace attacker Xavier Doherty, known for his spinning abilities is also on the squad this year. Playing at home this time around, guarantees a highly boosted morale for the players and of course, for Australia.

Sri Lanka

W

ith the nation blessed by the Pope’s recent visit, Sri Lanka gears up for yet another World Cup Tournament. Having tasted success last in 1996, India’s neighbours have a rather senior team this time. Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan have been in absolutely scintillating form. The team is playing the stakes with Lasith Malinga, who owing to fitness levels, may or may not play this season. In his absence Nuwan Kulasekara will have to rise to the occasion and run the frontal pace attack. The magic wand however for Sri Lanka is none other than Kumar Sangakkara. Showcasing a super impressive batting record, Kumar knows how to set the score meters running. To add to this, being the keeper enables him to decipher opponent tactics and use this spontaneity on field. If he doesn’t play this year, Malinga’s ‘slingas’ are sure going to be missed! But, we can all only hope that he returns to fitness in time to bedazzle us in this World Cup. 46 Youth Incorporated FEBRUARY 2015

he last time they played in Australia and New Zealand, they took the Cup back home. Pakistan looks a little deprived of skilled middle order batsmen. No longer being serviced by phantom bowler Saeed Ajmal – the star dressed in dark green, is going to impact on field performance too. Nonetheless their bowling attack is their most powerful weapon in this competition. The evergreen (pun intended) Shahid Afridi was a sure shot pick by the Pakistani selectors this year. His leg breakers have won the team quite a few matches, while abandoning his captaincy for Misbah Ul-Haq provided him with undivided attention to the game. Will Pakistan be able to recreate the triumph of 1992 this time around down under? Pakistan has a lot to prove this time around.

o-hosting the tournament this year will be New Zealand, sporting some brilliant players and a genuine home ground advantage, New Zealand looks sure to make a strong impact on this tournament. Boasting of possessing one of the world’s top skippers Brendon McCullum, alongside Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson, the squad looks packed with serious game performance and delivery. Neutral cricket fans around the world will look at the Kiwis as one of the favourites to reach the later stages of the tournament.

ne could be forgiven this year if they were to ask the question, what really were the West Indies selection panel thinking during the selection process? No Dwayne Bravo? No Kieron Pollard? The squad looks severely devoid of strength this year, although it houses a good combination of fielders, bowlers and batsmen. Having won the first two titles of the World Cup in 1975 and 1979, West Indies are strong contenders in any game. Chris Gayle is back on the crease this time (and in top form too) to register a few more metaphoric ‘Gaylestorms’.

et to progress through the knock-out stages Zimbabwe sports decent bat and bowl combinations. The African nation has definitely shown signs that there’s still some spark left in them. Hamilton Masakadza, who made his international debut 14 years ago, is all set to play his part in his first ever World Cup. The bowling group will be led by Tinashe Panyangara, who is likely to share the new ball with Tendai Chatara. They will be joined by Tawanda Mupariwa, the right-arm pacer, who last played an ODI in 2009. Zimbabwe is placed in Pool B alongside South Africa, India, West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates. The African nation will kickstart its campaign against South Africa in Hamilton on 15 February 2015.

ll these teams have earned a ticket to play in the World Cup 2015 by qualifying through the ICC World Cricket League Championship or via the ICC World Cup Qualifier 2014. UAE is much like a new player in the tournament, playing for the first time since 1996, it will be looking to make some contribution in this tournament. Scotland is touted to be the weakest side in the tournament, having qualified this time after two

successive failed attempts. Afghanistan and Ireland are still on the stronger side with Ireland upsetting Pakistan way back in 2007 and England recently in 2011. They might all seem like minions up against ‘El Macho’ in the likes of Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and India. But, even the biggest armchair pundits of the cricketing world can’t deny that the smallest names can upset the most established powerhouses of cricketing nations, when it comes to the ICC Cricket World cup.

Most Memorable Cricket World Cup Moments With the World Cup around the corner, it's only normal for cricket fans to start reminiscing about their favourite moments from previous World Cups. That's why Harsh Mehta has listed his top 10 moments of all time

FASTEST CENTURY MAKES 10O'BRIEN’S HISTORY IN IRELAND AND THE WORLD

GLORY 8GLORY, AUSTRALIA

Kevin O’Brien put cricket on the front pages of his Irish hometown with a stunning win against England in Bengaluru. He made a century from 50 balls, the fastest ever achievement of a century in World Cup history, a feat that will forever be etched into Irish sporting folklore.

Australia, a strong contender in the world of cricket, has the highest number of World Cup wins at four times. The team won its first World Cup in 1987 against all-time rival England. Later, they won three World Cup finals in a row: in 1999 against Pakistan, in 2003 against India (where they posted the largest ever World Cup final total of 359 runs and defeated India by 125 runs), and against Sri Lanka in 2007. It was a glorious moment in Australian cricket as it was the first time that a team had won three World Cup finals in a row.

RHODES BECAME THE 9JONTY SUPERMAN OF CRICKET

South Africa’s first World Cup match was in 1992 after they were reinstated into the cricket world. In a match against Pakistan, Pakistan's bowlers restricted South Africa to 211 for 7. At 48, Inzamam-ul-Haq was off crease and was run out by Jonty Rhodes in a fabulous airborne spectacle, where he picked up the ball mid-run and jumped to break the stumps.

LLOYD LEADS WEST 7CLIVE INDIES TO THE CUP IN 1975

In the first ever World Cup, Clive Lloyd made his first ODI century against Australia. He made a striking 102 from 85 balls, and was a magnificent innings by Lloyd which won the West Indies the inaugural World Cup in 1975.

AKRAM SHINING STAR 6WASIM FOR PAKISTAN

3MAXIMUM GIBBS

In the 1992 World Cup final Wasim Akram was the star performer for Pakistan against England. Akram had scored 33 runs of 18 balls which propelled the total to 249 for 6, and also took three crucial wickets in England’s innings. This led to Pakistan winning its first World Cup under Imran Khan’s leadership.

Making a perfect 36 with six back-to-back sixes, Herschelle Gibbs hit Daan van Bunge’s leg spin in a match against Netherlands in 2007. He became the first batsman to hit six sixes in a row in World Cup history.

WINNING HIS 5SACHIN FIRST WORLD CUP

Sachin Tendulkar, the greatest player in cricket, won his first World Cup in 2011 in Mumbai under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. It was Sachin’s fifth World Cup appearance, higher than any other player. It was a proud moment for every Sachin fan all over the world, in Indian as well as international cricket history.

DHONI DELIVERS A 2MS WORLD CUP GLORY

It was a glorious moment for India when MS Dhoni conquered the World Cup with a magnificent six against Sri Lanka in Mumbai in 2011. This got India its second World Cup title after a span of 28 years.

DEV GETS VIVAN 4KAPIL RICHARDS IN 1983 FINAL

It was a stunning moment when Kapil Dev took Vivian Richards’ catch by running backward in the World Cup final in 1983 in England. It was a difficult catch to take but was taken by the Indian captain, which changed the game for India and got them its maiden World Cup in 1983.

During the 1996 World Cup, Sohail slashed Venkatesh Prasad’s delivery prompting the crowd to boo Prasad. In a show of bravado, Sohail pointed to where the ball had gone as if to tell Prasad to fetch it. When Sohail tried to repeat the infamous slash off the next ball, he was bowled out. This time the crowd erupted in cheer as Sohail was sent off to the pavilion, his aggression leading to his downfall. FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 51

RELATIONSHIP

‘That time of the month’ P

Shreya Shah observes how the third person in every relationship is not actually a person, but a crazy, raging monster – that is popularly known as PMS!

remenstrual syndrome is commonly known as PMS, and even more commonly referred to as ‘that time of the month’ with an obligatory roll of the eyes or a long-suffering sigh, sometimes both. If girls think that guys aren’t sensitive enough to their predicament, guys take ten steps back and claim that most girls use this condition as an excuse for murder. Well, let’s get some of the myths busted and help banish the relationship destroyer. Because jokes apart, behaviour during this period (no pun intended!) is rapidly becoming a make or break factor in today’s relationships.

Cribbing and complaining about how unfair the world is or how your guy really should know that a Nutella sandwich is the best definition of lunch or how your wardrobe has conspired to make you feel your fattest best or the fact that he never listens to your problems or a snide observation that a kick (in his, ah, privates?) will never compare to the agony of PMS? Let’s face it! No matter how much of a gem of a person he is, he really isn’t going

to understand what his lady is going through. Another thing – it's not his fault, so stop giving him so much grief about it! It’s not easy dealing with a swirling cocktail of hormones in your body, which makes thinking straight difficult. Still, if it’s not easy for you how will it be easy for

What is PMS?

Boys, please listen carefully! It’s not easy for girls to deal with stomach cramps, loss of a lot of blood (I know, gross, but it's important to say this!) and stomach pain a few days a month. And that’s just the actual time. The PMS period is a whole different gamut of pain – bloating, mood swings, headaches, backaches, leg aches, and a whole list of craziness that sets in a week before! How is this fair? It's not! So boys, be nice to the ladies.

The Other Side

Girls, this is definitely not an excuse for biting your guy’s head off! 52 Youth Incorporated FEBRUARY 2015

your partner to deal with a problem he can't even begin to understand? Here are some easy bits of advice for partners to keep the boat of love steady:

1

Whisper the three magic words and they are: ‘I am wrong’. Essentially this means, you must agree with her on everything. No, it doesn’t mean you’re helpless. But, if there’s a legit argument where you feel you're definitely right, mumble a vague ‘fine, maybe, okay’. Keep track of it and approach her five days later when you have a chance to talk to a much calmer version of her.

2

Slip her some chocolate periodically. Stop laughing and/or shaking your head. Clichéd as it may sound, chocolate releases loving sensations into her body and she’s going to feel that much more loving towards you! Win-win, right? Exactly!

3

Stop raising your eyebrows when she devours an entire pizza, garlic bread, two glasses of cola, a large box of fries and still has place for that double cream tiramisu. At all costs, avoid offering her an anti-indigestion tablet. Let the binge phase pass quietly, and be ready for some tearful exclamations at how you let her get fat in a day.

4

She is going to be bloated, okay? It’s to do with water retention, not buying two sizes too small of clothes. If she wants to wear that little black dress, which for some strange reason, doesn't make her look size zero, then tactfully drop in a hint about how she looks so gorgeous in casual jeans and a top.

5

Unexplained bouts of anger or crying? Do not, under any circumstances, ask her with condescension if her irrationality has been brought about by hormones. If she feels like crying because the day has just been too hot, then lower the AC temperature. If she gets angry at you for not having surprised her on your anniversary of holding hands for the first time, (even if you guys haven't celebrated it for the past four years), give her a giant hug and distract her! Next, go to your secret stash of gifts (you do have that, right?), pluck one out and offer her one with your best apologetic-yetwinsome-smile looks. But, let me make one point clear. Do not, under any circumstances, become her puppet. Do not dance to her tunes,

or agree with bowed head to her every irrational command. Be as loving as possible, but do put down your foot at letting her boss you around for tiny things. We may be emotional fools right now, but there is a perfectly inexplicable reason behind all of it and we already respect you for being an amazing guy! If you become overly nice then that surprises us too, because we aren't really expecting you to suddenly become a doormat! So don't leave your identity behind while trying to keep us happy, but do try to go out of your way to make us happy because it will be much appreciated! yi

TRAVEL

The Walk on Heer Paresh Kothari explores the festive notes on soft sands as she gives her views on the Rann of Kutch festival Sindh region of Pakistan where visitors can watch the border proceedings at the crack of dusk. Primarily occupied by people of Kutchi origin (a subcast of Gujarat who generally communicate in Kutchi language as well as Gujarati), this region comes alive with festivities in the winter months, beginning early December and ending in March.

The festival

C

onsumed by the pristine beauty of white, we take a walk in the largest salt desert of the world. Walking on this desert on a full moon night will simply sweep you off your feet. The luminous light from the full moon delightfully flirts with the crystals of salt, leaving a shimmering lasting impression in the eyes of the beholder. The White Rann is a seasonal salt marsh, which is part of the Thar Desert, located deep in the heart of the Kutch region of Gujarat, India. This region spreads across the

The festival started in 2008 and is now in its seventh season. Initially, the festival lasted only for a few days, but with the overwhelming response from tourists, it now goes on for a little over three months. Last year, the festival saw over 12,000 visitors from various parts of the world. This year it commenced on 1 December 2014 and will go on till 5 March 2015.

The initiative

The Government of Gujarat has taken the initiative to invite people from various parts around the country to witness the environmental beauty of this part of India especially during the winter months. Over the years, the festival has garnered much clout

in international circles as well. Today, the White Rann has become a hub for travel enthusiasts from around the world to come and witness the charms of Gujarat unfold right in front of their eyes.

The proceedings

A hoard of cultural activities showcased by the locals and tribal people of this region captivates travellers and cultural enthusiasts alike. You can spend the night in the tents set up at Dhordo. Relish a typical Kattchi meal of rotla (chappati made out of black millet flour), chilly pickles, khichdi (a rice and lentil amalgam), kadhi (sweetened yoghurt tossed in gram flour and spices), chaas (creamy and lightly salted butter milk). All of this is then topped off with sweet jalebi or dudhpak (spiced milk and rice). Tourists are regularly ferried in luxury buses from Bhuj Airport and the Bhuj railway station to the campsite. The campsite offers visitors four categories of tents for accommodation, varying in price and standard of luxury. It is better to book a tent well in advance as they fill up really fast. The government also offers

travellers the provision to book online in advance on the festival's official website – www.rannutsav.com.

The tent covers an area of 44 sq. meters and comprises of basic amenities, including an air conditioner and heater. THE DELUXE A/C SUITE COTTAGES: they covers an area of 36 sq. meters, and offers facilities similar to those of the Premium tents. THE NON-A/C DELUXE COTTAGES: these cover an area of 36 sq. meters. The flooring is finished in ‘Mati Lipan’. Though the basic amenities are provided for, there is no air-conditioning or heater facility. THE DARBARI SUITE: these suite is ideal for a big family, a group of friends or a couple. The tent covers a large area of 1600 sq. meters, and the interiors are decorated with cultural elements that speak volumes on the culture of Kutch. The inner spaces of the tent are luxuriously designed too.

Take the camel cart ride that cruises to various parts of the desert in the wee hours of the night to enjoy magical moments under the moonlight. You can also enjoy the brilliant warm hues of sunset in the winter skies of Kutch. The campsite too comes alive with a riot of colours and folk music. Watch the local women create bed sheets using tie and dye, patchwork, mirror work, or shell work. Take a trip to Kala Dungar (the highest point in Kutch) to enjoy the panoramic view of the White Rann. Don’t forget to visit the Dattary Temple located on Kala Dungar, especially when jackals are heralded in the evenings to accept offerings. A visit to the border outpost is another important highlight of this trip. The villages dotting the Banni Scrub and grassland areas, like Bhirendiaro, Hodka, Gorewali, Dhorodo and Ludia can give you a great insight into the local lifestyle. Also check out the numerous forts, palaces and temples around the area. Adventure enthusiasts must take a

HEALTH

WHEY The Right

They say, “Protein is King”. If we don’t get enough protein from our diet, then it can take a massive toll on our health and fitness. But, the million dollar question remains unanswered. How much protein does your body require? We try to find out

56 Youth Incorporated FEBRUARY 2015

56 Health.indd 56

1/27/2015 9:41:53 PM

HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO YOU NEED? •A common recommendation for gaining muscle is 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, or 2.2 grams of protein per kg. •If you have a physically demanding job, or you walk a lot, run, swim or do any sort of exercise, then you’re surely going to need a lot more protein. Endurance athletes also need quite a bit of protein, about 1.2 – 1.4 grams per kg • If you’re at a healthy weight, you don’t lift weights and you don’t exercise much, then aiming for 0.8 to 1.3 gram per kg is a reasonable estimate.

P

rotein is incredibly important. Most reference guides suggest that you need 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. That’s 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man and nearly 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman. Considering an average Indian diet, which is predominantly vegetarian, most of us fall terribly short of the mark. Some studies also suggest that even these figures are far from sufficient to ensure optimal health and body composition. So, the optimum amount of protein for any one person is very

subjective. It depends on many factors such as your physical activity levels, age, muscle mass, physical goals and current state of health.

WHAT’S ALL THIS FUSS ABOUT PROTEINS?

Proteins are the main building blocks of the body. They’re used to make muscles, tendons, organs and skin. Proteins are also used to make enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and a variety of small molecules that serve vital functions. Without protein, life as we know it would not be possible. Proteins are made out of tiny molecules called amino acids, which are linked together like peas in a pod. Some of these amino acids can be produced by the body, while we must acquire others from our diet. The ones we cannot produce and must get from our foods are called the “essential” amino acids. If your source of protein is animal protein (meat, fish, eggs), then you’re getting all the essential amino acids in the right proportions. If you’re eating animal products every day, then you’re probably already doing pretty well, in terms of protein. If you’re vegetarian, like most Indians, then it can be a bit more challenging to get all the protein and essential amino acids that your body needs. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need protein supplements, but they can really be useful for athletes and bodybuilders.

CAN PROTEINS AID DESIRED WEIGHT LOSS?

Protein is incredibly important when it comes to losing weight. In fact, its optimum consumption can ensure you never put it on in the first place. Weight loss is based on one basic premise. In order to lose weight, we need to take in fewer calories than we lose. Eating protein can help with that, by boosting your metabolic rate and consequently reducing your appetite. But, perhaps the most important contribution of protein is its ability to reduce your appetite and cause a spontaneous reduction in your calorie intake.

Not only does protein help you lose, but it can also help prevent you from gaining weight in the first place. Also, an elevated protein intake helps to build and preserve muscle mass, which burns a small amount of calories around the clock. In a nutshell, a protein intake at approximately 30% of calories seems to be optimal for weight loss. It automatically boosts your metabolic rate and leads to a spontaneous reduction in the amount of calories you consume.

MORE PROTEIN = MORE MUSCLE

When you work out, your muscles are constantly being broken down and rebuilt. So in order to gain muscle, the body must obviously be synthesizing more muscle protein than it is breaking down. For this reason, people who want a lot of muscle will need to eat a much larger amount of protein and also be working out intensively. Also, a little caveat: if you wish to hold on to muscle that you’ve already built, you may need to increase your protein intake when losing body fat. That’s because a relatively high protein intake can help prevent you from losing muscle that you tend to lose when dieting.

YOUR PLAN OF ACTION

The best sources of protein are meats, fish, eggs and dairy products. They contain all the vital amino acids that your body needs. For the vegetarians, there are also plants that are reasonably high in protein content, like quinoa, legumes and nuts. If you’re working out in any way and require more protein, then you can also supplement yout diet with whey protein powders. Most popular whey protein supplements contain nearly 24-25 grams per scoop and now come in various delectable flavours as well. If you’re not working out much and have 56-91 grams of protein per day as an average male or 46-75 grams per day as an average female, then you’re good to go! But, do remember a little more protein will never do you any harm. yi FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 57

POINT OF VIEW

V-Day or D-Day? Has Valentine’s Day become all about the pressure of showing off your love to your social network followers? Nisha JamVwal explores

58 Youth Incorporated FEBRUARY 2015

58 Point of view.indd 58

1/27/2015 9:44:23 PM

I

s love about a day or a moment? Do we have to celebrate it for one day or for every single day, nurturing it and allowing our lover to feel cherished, indulged and desired? Now don’t get me wrong, there’s no harm in celebrating love like we celebrate a birthday. It’s perfectly delightful to have one day in the year when you reiterate your vows, your love, and your passion more than the others. And who does not want to be treated to a special date night once in a while? Even for your parents, siblings, and friends — making it special and is great. But when it comes with pressures of presents, holidays and expenses, materialism that is imposed upon you by propaganda and social media, it becomes a commercial gimmick of shopkeepers. Sort of like monkeys performing in a circus, we are taken to perform to our social network audience, by posting pictures on Instagram and Facebook to prove how much of a fuss you were made of and how grandly your lover celebrates you. The pressure is to put out the perception that that you are so much in love and showering each other with red hearts, red velvet cake (never mind your girth) and mass produced prototype valentine's greeting cards. Don’t forget that this ultimately leads to dissatisfaction, disappointment and a lack of true fulfilment in a relationship over time.

ALL HYPE AND NO FEEL

That said, I’m definitely one for romantic dates, staring into each other’s eyes, holding hands, receiving surprise presents, kissing publically and just making much of special occasions, birthdays and anniversaries. And yet, when my roommate from LA calls her mother only on Mother’s

Day and sends her a present (charged to her mother’s credit card), never concerned about her mother for the rest of the year, it just proves to me even more how much of a farce all this is. The charade of proving points to other people about your love for your loved ones is such an absurdity. And when I see couples bored or nagging each other on all other days other than Valentine’s Day, I begin to wonder about this much-hyped day, and how it creates such disparities in behaviour Advertisements on gifting are feverishly making an appearance on television, and red hearts on shop

windows, pendants brandished through online marketing, friends boasting, and a commercial ‘ring’ are all in the air, just after you’ve heaved a sigh of relief that the performance pressure of New Year’s Eve is finally over. It’s inevitable. There’s no way out of giving cards and gifts to best friends, parents, lovers and probably even the domestic help. Why must we succumb to all this pressure proliferated by the sham of propaganda and circus of advertorials? Speaking purely for myself, I instead look for a ‘no reason’ moment

to pamper, love and show indulgences to the special people in your life. There really does not have to be a reason to rejoice and spoil your loved ones.

KEEP IT REAL AND SIMPLE

What happened to the joy of just kissing and walking barefoot on a white beach in that intangible moment of unadulterated desire? Desire of each other, of proximity, of love! No material desires and expectations. Moments stolen in the knowledge of what both of you want and desire is sometimes more meaningful than surprises that can throw you off guard. Sometimes your expectations may not be what your partner has planned to surprise you with. A candlelight dinner could be his idea of romance; yours might be a passionate getaway at a beach house. So it’s smarter to discuss and decide what works for both of you. Perhaps a light candlelight dinner at the beach house? Pink La Perla lingerie or mass produced heart-shaped pop-up cards, a twelve carat diamond or a couple’s ticket to holiday at Tahiti wrapped in a red heart box —these do not endorse your lover’s love. All the pampering is fabulous if it’s spontaneous, but not so cool or of much value if it’s forced and gimmicky. Love is supposed to be a feeling in the heart that makes your spirit flutter with joie de vivre, not with the wanting of solitaires! Let’s cherish every special moment with each other. Nothing lasts forever; even life itself is transient. Don’t wait for just one day to spoil, pamper, and celebrate love. Little gestures spread over the year make for happier relationships. yi Tweet Me at @nishjamvwal blog nishajamvwal.blogspot.in nishajamvwal@gmail.com FEBRUARY 2015 Youth Incorporated 59

TRAVEL AND TECHNOLOGY

Over the years travel has transformed from being a ‘means’ to an ‘experience’. Manil S Dodani tries to figure if there is any truth to this claim and to what measure

Travel, as defined by Google, is to ‘make a journey, typically of some length’. With the infusion of technology in all that we do from sleep to eat to rave and repeat, travel is another sphere of life where technology has set the pace going. Technology has not only made the world a smaller place to live in, but has also made commuting faster, easier and most importantly safer. Way back in 1912, when the Sperry Corporation introduced the first ever autopilot system at a Paris aviation safety conference, little did we fathom that technology would morph travelling

into an ‘experience’ from the previously known ‘means’. Today, modern aircrafts can fly entirely on their own, capable of making landings and taking off at the push of a few buttons. Flight collision avoidance and fly-by-wire systems ensure that the airspace stays accident free. But these are extremely advanced technologies that take care of the air, but what about the roads? The rampant growth of the number of cars in India has meant that safety plays a large part in all that happens on the road, and off it. A few years ago automobile manufacturers boasted about how airbag technology would save your life in the event of a crash, but in-car safety technology has come a long way since then. Cars rolling out a few years from now will sport their own collision avoidance systems (akin to ones that are currently installed on passenger and fighter aircraft). Reports suggest that once this technology reaches a higher point of evolution, systems can be devised where brakes can be automatically applied in the

event of poor visibility, car parts failure or even slow reflexes on part of the driver! The future holds multiple possibilities for self-driving cars as well. However, what would be far more relevant here would be to discuss the safety aspect of a passenger in a public vehicle especially in metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru etc. The invention of app-based travel has handed power to the end user to control what he travels in, how he travels coupled with reasonable pricing and premium convenience. Entire train and bus schedules, maps and fares, and important landmark are now available in smartphones for the world to see.

APP BASED CAB SERVICES OLA

TAXI FOR SURE

UBER

BOOKMYCAB

MERU CABS

App based taxi services allow users to book cabs wherever they are at any point in time via their phone’s GPS location. These apps offer extremely accurate details pertaining to your travel in the city; from driver’s details to the ETA of your cab, every detail is offered. Users are free to choose from sedans to vans to luxury vehicles and if you a true blue Mumbaikar, the good old kaali-peelis. OLA is an app that has gone one step ahead with this and now offers auto rickshaws in cities like Bengaluru and Pune. The massive penetration of the internet and smartphone technology has only made it trendier to use these apps. The ease of use and great service are contributing factors to the success of these companies. Case in point, OLA recently reported raising 250 crores from foreign investment companies! It is this razor sharp focus on mobile technology that has made travel safer. However, the question really is: at the end of the day cabs are a personal service and is this personal service really safe? SAFETY IN TRAVEL | THE JUXTAPOSE The infamous Uber app that offers luxury and semi-premium pickup cars in minutes to anyone who requires them got itself some serious publicity and bad mouth reviews after the Delhi rape incident involving a 27-year-old financial executive from Gurgaon. While Uber has managed to retrive its Delhi operations implementing ‘higher than industry standards’ such as an emergency button on its mobile app and the institution of a dedicated incident response team, it is crucial to ask if heinous crimes can still be committed during travel? A simple understanding of a Radio Taxi License and the much ignored Terms and Conditions will let you in on how your friendly neighbourhood cab service operator functions: ****Excerpt from Meru T&C**** (in case of taxis not owned by Meru) “Please note that we are not

responsible for the behaviour, actions or inactions of drivers of taxis, quality of cab which you may use (through us or otherwise). Any Contract for the provision of taxi services is between you and the driver and not us and we simply provide a platform to introduce drivers and passengers.” Seems fair doesn’t it? ****Excerpt from OLA T&C**** “The Company shall not be liable for any conduct of the drivers of the taxis. However, the Company encourages you to notify it of any complaints that you may have against the driver of any taxi that you may have hired using the Company's services.” Denying all liability to anything that might happen to you in the cab after the door slams shut, is the sum and substance of the T&C. These apps tout themselves to be mere ‘intermediaries’ or ‘information providers’ simply ‘linking passengers to taxi drivers’, but I firmly believe these apps are doing much more than that. They’re handing your life, your freedom and your safety in the hands of stranger who will be driving you home. That’s dangerous, it simply is. The above excerpts might sound like something straight out of Ripley’s Believe it or not, but we suggest you believe this, because it’s true. Whether or not these apps are safe for women is still debatable. That being said, womens safety is an issue of grave concern and requires the undivided attention of this nation. yi

Remarkable love stories Love Story

By Erich Segal A classic tale of love that endures in the face of adversities, this 1970 book is about Oliver Barrett IV and Jennifer Cavilleri. Oliver, a Harvard jock and heir apparent to all of his dad’s fortune, is expected to take over the family business. Jennifer is an arts major and the daughter of a baker. They meet, they fall in love. But the real story starts when they decide to get married; Oliver’s father, against this love, cuts off all ties with him, including his finances. Taking up odd jobs, they work out ways to make ends meet, until a fateful day when Jennifer is diagnosed with leukaemia. Oliver asks his father for financial help to save his wife; what happens next will touch even the coldest hearts.

The Notebook

By Nicholas Sparks Noah is haunted by the memory of Allie, the beautiful girl he met 14 years ago. Try as he might, he cannot forget the summer that they spent together, a love that couldn’t be possible because of class differences. One day she unexpectedly returns back to his town, only to get engaged to someone else. While they wallow in their love for each other, Allie has to choose between going ahead with her marriage, or a possibility of being with Noah, against the wishes of her mother, who hid his letters from her over a year ago. Written as if Noah is telling an old woman this story, there’s a pause at this point when he reveals a secret that’s both endearing and touching.

Norwegian Wood

By Haruki Murakami A story of Toru Watanabe, who falls in love with two beautiful but completely different women, set in Tokyo. Naoko is an emotionally disturbed girl, fragile and prone to episodes of depression and unsociability after the deaths of her sister and her first boyfriend, who happened to be Toru’s best friend. They fall in love later, despite lingering feelings of guilt. Midori, on the other hand, is a bubbly, quick-witted girl who is in Toru’s class. She runs her father’s bookstore, and falls in love with Toru gradually. While Naoko is admitted to a sanatorium, limiting the number of times Toru can meet her, he is also attracted to Midori. Murakami puts into words the myriad conflicting emotions that each of the characters go through in a way that no other writer can.

The Mango Season

By Amulya Malladi A beautifully worded novel filled with secret love and longing, this one is set in the heat of India’s summers. Priya Rao has just returned from a seven-year long stay in the US. She has news, she’s engaged to her American boyfriend Nick Collins. As she figures out a way to tell her family about him, she’s hounded by her parents and hordes of relatives who talk about nothing but getting married to a good Indian boy. How will she tell her family, who considers marrying for love a sin? There’s always a way, though, as she has to decide between obeying her parents’ wishes and choosing her love.

Pride and Prejudice

By Jane Austen Though this story is set in 19th century England, it’s still a relevant and highly admired one. Mr and Mrs Bennet have five unmarried daughters, and the story starts by revealing that Mrs Bennet is primarily concerned with getting her daughters married. A well-off Mr Bingley has moved into the neighbourhood, along with his friend Mr Darcy, who has trifle difficulty getting adjusted to the manner-conscious society. What follows is a story of love that is sometimes unrequited, clashes, proposals, rejections, and indecision in a society that puts an onus on manners, upbringing and morality.

Trends Of The Month Ronaldo wins Ballon d’Or

Charlie Hebdo publishes first edition after the massacre

It took only a week for French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to bounce back up after the attack on their office that killed 11. They reportedly published nearly five million copies of their subsequent edition; people had to wait for over an hour to get the magazine, and many stores all over France had to put up a ‘sold out’ sign soon after they ran out of copies. Is that a show of resilience or chutzpah?

Cristiano Ronaldo gave all his fans a very emotional moment this month when he the won Ballon d'Or 2014. To receive the award, he took his son to the stage along with him, and gave an emotional speech, thanking his team, girlfriend and son. The whole world went ‘aww’ when he choked up and tears rolled down his eyes.

Censor Board Chief resigns followed by eight other people

Sakshi Maharaj: every woman must produce four kids

Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj has a brilliant idea to protect his religion: every Hindu woman must produce at least four children. After all, India belongs to the Hindus and will always be owned by them (according to him). Yes, Sakshi Maharaj, India is totally not the second most populated country in the world.
