THE ERA OF SPECIALISATION We are in an era where specialisation and super-specialisation have arrived. Even a website for that matter exchanges various hands in the making from a designer, user interaction expert, user interface expert, coder, project manager, etc. Each a super-specialist, in their own domain. While the need for generalists will never die, the emphasis on specialisations has gained importance in today’s day. In Marketing Communications too, you will find specialists in Advertising, Digital Communications, Media Management, Journalism, Public Relations, Entertainment Marketing, Brand Management, Social Media, Rural Marketing, Events Marketing, Direct Marketing, etc. Each of these areas, provide youngsters interesting career opportunities. The world of Marketing Communications is exploding each day with the entry of new mediums, new innovations, new consumer insights, etc. This leads to the need for trained talent who will hit the ground running when they join an organization. The Northpoint Post Graduate Career Program in Marketing Communications aims to develop high quality manpower expertise for the fast changing Advertising, Digital Marketing and Media Industry. After having gone through a complete orientation on the Marketing Communications industry, the 11 months program leaves a student with the option to specialize in Advertising, Digital Marketing or Media Management. Editor's Note Love one another but make not a bond of love, let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your soul – Khalil Gibran uch powerful and resounding words have been spoken about love over the centuries. Monuments have been built, wars have been waged, countries have been torn apart. It is something that has possessed us all from the time we were children in the arms of our doting parents till our last dying breath where our near and dear ones despair in the last hours of separation. We have all known the great feeling of being in love and the pangs of missing a loved one. One of my great loves is travel and my wishlist is to see all the countries around the world. A holiday has always made me feel like a new person in some ways. Having returned from the Paris of Latin America - Buenos Aires, a country where people love the good life. They have invented the sexy Tango dance, which is the ultimate expression of love. There are all kinds of love like the one for family, friends, partner, pets, objects and a lot more. Sometimes, we tend to make ourselves and others miserable when we bargain, manipulate or control in a relationship. As they say, love with all you have and do not expect anything in return. So in this celebrated Valentine month, we bring you some unique love bonds for our cover story, Love, Actually (page 42) from the beautiful people who have shared their lives and bared their souls for you. Keeping up with the Valentine’s spirit, we gorge into what it takes for a relationship to last a lifetime; a phenomenon which is pretty rare these days. High School Sweethearts takes us on the journey of practicality vs emotions and which overpowers the other in today’s time. A little light on the heart is our listicle on Bizarre Valentine’s Day Traditions across the globe which will certainly make you laugh out loud.

WITH HR A INTERACTS AUTHOR RISHI VO YOUTH INC AT THE LITERATI FEST 2016

Letter of the Month I’m in the 11th grade right now, and I’m doing IB. In short, I am what you call ‘youth’. I absolutely love reading this magazine. It has everything a teenager would ever want to look at; avoiding the boring intricacies of events and giving us something we look forward to. I really appreciate the efforts taken by the team. -ANUSHKA SABOO

akashakumar.wordpress.com Growing up in a household that celebrated individuality and opinion, Akash was bound to be a strong-minded person with his own set of beliefs and ideals. While his friends were challenging each other to PSP trifles, he would be absorbed in a parallel universe where the Secret Seven, Nancy Drew and Birbal caught his fascination. While enthusiastically pursuing a degree in Chartered Accountancy, he’s made it a point to keep writing. Social issues like feminism, religious tolerance, bullying and homophobia were his priority up until 2015 when he decided to put himself out there and ventured into fiction and challenges. He finds meeting and interacting with people who do the same thing, fighting the same battles and standing up for the same things refreshing and awakening. His focus has always been different - to inspire people, to be the reason why someone took to writing, to be remembered.

The Ireland Education Diaries

Madhura Sansare gets into the details of Ireland Education to give you a complete insight into the education in the country, and why you should definitely consider pursuing it

T

hink Ireland, and a picturesque image of snowclad mountains, charming towns, bustling cities and mythical leprechauns comes to mind. Fantastical as it may be, Ireland has a lot more to offer. Now we understand how you can never think of education when you think of Ireland, but with the wide range of noteworthy universities situated in this magical city, education can easily be considered as one of its major selling points. Those who study in Ireland have the chance to not only pursue a fabulous education that will surely add a feather to their educational hats, but they also have the chance to fall in love with the rich cultural heritage of the country. A country known for its friendly people, magnificent culture and diverse natural landscapes, it is no wonder that Ireland has produced some of the world’s most internationally renowned scholars, poets and writers. STUDENT CITIES IN IRELAND Student life is a popular part of Ireland’s culture. And considering the large number of students residing in its major cities due to the number of colleges placed there, we are not surprised. DUBLIN: With the greatest concentration of universities and colleges presiding in the Irish capital, Dublin is one of the biggest student-dominated cities in the country. It is also a popular city-break destination, with a wide

16 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

range of things to do and see in the city. Students can stroll around admiring the fabulous medieval architecture, retracing the steps of eminent novelists, or they can discover the meaning of ‘craic’ – a popular Irish term meaning fun times in good company – at a visit to the Guinness Brewery. Sure, Dublin is an expensive city to live in, with living costs far higher here than anywhere else in the country. But if you look at it from an international standpoint, Dublin doesn’t even come in the list of the world’s most expensive student destinations. Besides, it certainly gives back more than it takes. The west-coast city is home to a number of universities which include University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University and Dublin Institute of Technology. One of the world’s leading medical schools, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland also has a home in Dublin. GALWAY: Residing on the east coast, Galway is parallel to Irish capital in all that it offers. With gorgeous beaches and a buzzing city center, Galway combines traditional and modern with a dose of the Irish for a perfect student experience. From cobbled streets to bright buildings and busy pubs with live music; Galway has it all. The harbour city is a hub for the arts and culture. Galway is home to reputed universities like the National University of Ireland and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

CORK: Located on the south coast of Ireland, Cork is well-known for its cultural activity. With a vibrant cultural life and charming historical architecture, this city gathers a lot of interest for students and tourists alike. From traditional pubs to a spectacular countryside, Cork has it all. Prestigious universities like University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology can be found here. UNIVERSITIES IN IRELAND Ireland life is definitely one of the major selling points of the country, but for a student, education is a mandatory selection criteria to consider when choosing where to study abroad. And Ireland takes the cake with education just as well as it does with culture. TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN: Ireland’s oldest higher education institute, Trinity College Dublin was established in 1592 and is one of the seven ‘ancient universities’ in UK and Ireland combined. Modelled after the esteemed Oxford and Cambridge Universities, it is the only constituent college of the University of Dublin. Ranked 78th in the world, Trinity College Dublin is currently the most prestigious university in Ireland. The University has three main faculties; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences; and Health Sciences. UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK: University College Cork is the third-ranked Irish higher education institute. It was officially renamed to National University of Ireland, Cork in 1998, but it still widely known as University College Cork, or UCC. With an enrolment of around 20,000 students, it has around 3000 international students representing more than 100 nationalities. It was also the

first university in the world to receive the International Green Flag for environmental sustainability. National University of Ireland, Galway: With more than 17,000 students enrolled currently, the university is undergoing a €400 million redevelopment program. The university prides itself on its wide and unusual range of courses, including a BSc in Podiatry (is a branch of medicine devoted to the study of diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower extremity) and a BE/MEng in Sport and Exercise Engineering. DUBLIN BUSINESS SCHOOL: Specialising in career focused business and law education as well as education programmes in arts, media, social science, humanities and psychology, Dublin Business School is one of the acclaimed independent colleges in Ireland. Their courses are designed in collaboration with industry and professional bodies. One of the most fascinating innovations by DBS is DBS Advantage, which gives students the opportunity to engage in a development programme that runs parallel to the students’ academic studies. With a student population of 9000 students, DBS offers over 100 accredited programmes. DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY: The University was established in 1975, but gained university status in 1989. Ranked at 353 in the world, the University has a student population of 12000, including a 1000 students enrolled in distance education courses. So now that you know all you need to know to study at an Irish University, it is also important to consider what the Irish universities look for in the students. We spoke to Trinity College Dublin, and Dublin Business School regarding what a student should keep in mind while considering an education in Ireland.

FOREIGN SHORES Ronan Hudson, Regional Officer for India at Trinity College Dublin, talks about what studying in Ireland is all about. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A STUDENT APPLYING FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY? As the highest ranked university in Ireland, and in the top 100 internationally, admission to Trinity is competitive. Applicants will require a strong academic record and a keen interest in their chosen subject area. Trinity is also a thriving scholarly community, famous for its ancient societies and vibrant extracurricular activities, and is especially well suited to students with varied interests and passions. DO YOU OFFER PLACEMENT OPTIONS FOR YOUR STUDENTS? WHAT TYPE OF EMPLOYERS DO YOU USUALLY HAVE FOR PLACEMENTS? Many of our professional courses offer paid internships as part of the degree programme. As Ireland’s number one university, Trinity graduates are the most highly sought-after by employers, thus making Trinity the only Irish university in the 2015 Global Employability University Rankings.

We speak to 27 year old Santhosh Balasa, a Python Developer at the Irish company Ammeon about his experience in Ireland. He completed his MEng in Computer and Communications Systems from the University of Limerick in 2013, and has since worked at IBM in Dublin, before moving to his current job. WHAT IS THE USP ABOUT THE COUNTRY AS FAR AS EDUCATION IS CONCERNED? Ireland has very low corporate tax, around 12%. Thus most of the blue chip companies have established their offices in Ireland. Also, Ireland is one of the largest software exporting hubs after the US. All these factors have placed Ireland in an important position, where software opportunities are lucrative. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE OF STUDYING IN AN IRISH UNIVERSITY? My experience was absolutely amazing. Apart from digital notes and assignments, the professors gave us practical challenges to solve, which really enhanced my thinking, also encouraging out-of-the box thinking. I believe that is what enhanced my skills

Cliona OBeirne, Director of Marketing & Admissions at Dublin Business School, says the students’ all-round ability is important for studying in Ireland. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A STUDENT APPLYING FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY? We are looking for students with great academic ability that can be translated in to successful career. Students with critical thinking, passion for & intellectual commitment to the course applied and motivation to pursue the same. We would also be looking for students that are enthusiastic to participate in extracurricular activities that include sports, literary & social activities. Some of the employers that our graduates work for include City Group, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Ebay, Accenture, AIB Bank, Bank of Ireland, KPMG, Yahoo, Oracle, Twitter, HP Ireland, Amazon, Deloitte, IBM, Nokia Ireland, SAP, and E&Y to name a few.

Like Santhosh, Neha Thethi too has stayed on in Ireland after her studies at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. She’s currently working as an Information Security Analyst at BH Consulting in Dublin. WHAT IS THE USP ABOUT THE COUNTRY AS FAR AS EDUCATION IS CONCERNED? According to me, the USP of Ireland is its location. It offers great opportunities for people working in the IT sector. Some of the best tech companies, including Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Dell, Google, IBM, HP, Microsoft, and Twitter have their offices in Ireland. That also includes top security companies—for instance, antivirus companies like McAfee and Symantec. There are also several security conferences and training programmes organised here all year round. Some conferences such as IRISS organise a Capture the Flag competition too which helps students sharpen their security skills. HOW IS THE COMPETITION LEVEL? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE OF STUDYING IN A FOREIGN UNIVERSITY? The competition level is great as there are students from all across the globe. Moreover, if you are a fresher, you may also compete against students with several years of industry experience. For me, it was an incredible learning experience. The lecturers here are very friendly and approachable. The course material outlined is quite practical and application oriented. yi

YOUTH ISSUES

EFFECTS

S

ay you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a particular game that happens to be one of your favourites. "Oh, that game's easy. So not worth the time," one of your friends says dismissively. The others agree. Inwardly, you know that it is a game you happen to enjoy quite a lot but, outwardly, not wanting to debate the issue, you agree with the crowd. You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure. It is probably more accurate to refer to this as peer influence or social influence to adopt a particular type of behaviour, dress, or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your equals (peers). As a teen, it's likely that you've experienced the effect of peer influence in a number of different areas, ranging from the clothes you

20 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

We all have our group of friends and love being a part of it, but what happens when we don’t realize the effect they have on our day to do day lives and thoughts. Fatema Kathawala takes us through this integral and deep system of peer pressure

wear to the music you listen to. Peer influence is not necessarily a bad thing. We are all influenced by our peers, both negatively and positively, at any age. For teens, as school and other activities take you away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than you do with your parents and siblings. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life. Sometimes, though, particularly in emotional situations, peer influence can be hard to resist, it really has become ‘pressure’ and you may feel compelled to do something you're uncomfortable with. It’s rightly said - “Don’t change so that people like you, be you and the genuine people will love the real you” Every teenager goes through a phase of trying to fit in. Every teenager likes to be among

the so called cool crowd. While in school, every adolescent loves to be with people who make them look and feel popular. But sometimes this affects them psychologically and emotionally as well. Teenagers find it easy to confide in their ‘group mates’ about all their problems and secrets and not talk to their parents about it. This in turn leads them to start following each step that their group mates take towards growing up and becoming cool. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PEER PRESSURE – WHAT TO HAVE AND WHAT TO DO ‘What to have’ peer pressure refers to what brand of clothes to wear or electronic gadgets to have just to be better than your friends. This kind of behaviour can put a lot of pressure on parents. ‘What to do’ peer pressure would be based on the behavioural aspect as the

behaviour of the adolescent in different situations start changing due to the influence of their peer groups behavioural tactics in similar situations. Everyone gives in to pressure at one time or another, but have you thought about why people sometimes do things they don’t actually want to do? Here are some reasons: n They want to be liked and don’t want to lose their friends n They want to appear mature n They are afraid of being rejected by others n They don’t want to be made fun of n They don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings n They aren’t sure of what they really want n They don’t know how to get out of the situation TYPES OF PEER PRESSURE : NEGATIVE OR HARMFUL PEER PRESSURE This kind of pressure forces a teenager to do things and take decisions that are harmful or will prove to be harmful in the future. Such as: SMOKING AND ALCOHOL: Taking up smoking or consuming alcohol will more than likely be the first areas where your teenager will face peer pressure. With movies and television portraying smoking and drinking characters as being tough and rebellious, teens imitate this type of behaviour in order to flaunt their independence. SEX: Some girls feel pressured into having sex in order to be popular or liked by boys. Be open to your parents or someone you look up to for advice about all forms of sexual intercourse. Know that there are other reasons to not become sexually involved too early. Besides worrying about pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, you must remember to also consider pride and self-respect. DRUGS: A more dangerous and potentially life-threatening pressure faced is the usage of drugs. If your

friends are doing drugs, then you’re very much at risk. Hard drugs such as sleeping pills, barbiturates, pain pills, crystal meth and coke are not only highly addictive, but they can be fatal. Combine temptation and opportunity with a teenager’s curiosity, and you have a recipe for disaster. Teens don’t believe that one does not have to be a regular user in order to become addicted. By the time they finally believe it, it’s too late for them to stop. "There are two main features that seem to distinguish teenagers from adults in their decision making," says Laurence Steinberg, a researcher at Temple University in Philadelphia. "During early adolescence in particular, teenagers are drawn to the immediate rewards of a potential choice and are less attentive to the possible risks. Second, teenagers in general are still learning to control their impulses, to think ahead, and to resist pressure from others." These skills develop gradually, as a teen's ability to control his or her behaviour gets better throughout adolescence. According to Dr. B. J. Casey from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making judgments and decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they have to make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by external factors like peers. In a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. What the researchers discovered was that the number of risks teens took in the driving game more than doubled when their friends were watching as

compared to when the teens played the game alone. This outcome indicates that teens may find it more difficult to control impulsive or risky behaviours when their friends are around, or in situations that are emotionally charged. POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE Peer pressure isn’t always bad. While it can be hard for teens to resist peer influence sometimes, especially in the heat of the moment, it can also have a positive effect. Just as people can influence others to make negative choices, they can also influence them to make positive ones. A teen might join a volunteer project because all of his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because the social group he or she belongs to thinks getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each

SEVEN CONDITIONS THAT PUT YOU AT HIGHER RISK TO GIVE INTO PEER PRESSURE n Low self-importance n Lack of confidence n No particular interests or hobbies n Feeling isolated from family n Curiosity n The need to fit in n Being made fun of or called a

loser other to study, try out for sports, or follow new artistic interests. In this way, peer influence can lead teens to engage in new activities that can help build strong pathways in the brain. While we are constantly influenced by those around us, ultimately the decision to act (or not to act) is up to us as individuals. So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you. yi

HOW DOES ONE RESIST PEER PRESSURE? n Understanding your own values and beliefs n Have Self-confidence n Choose your friends wisely n Talk to a trusted adult n Don’t make excuses, say exactly how you feel. 2016 FEBRUARY YOUTHINCMAG.COM 21

FOCUS FEATURE

HONE YOUR With the increasing number of employers looking at job aspirants’ technical skills instead of their degrees, many students have started focusing on improving their skills. Bernadette Braganza looks at four flourishing fields in which technical skill development is a must

I

nterviewers consider technical skills as an important asset. Technical skills mean the knowledge and capability of a person to perform a specific task. These skills could be in the form of mathematical skills, computer skills, engineering skills, management skills, etc. Following are some careers which require technical skills.

TEXTILE DESIGN If you have an interest in designing your and others outfits or home décor, then this is the field for you. Textile design is the development and creation of designs for fabrics. It involves designing the structure and look of the textile. A textile designer can work in various industries like the fashion industry, home textiles and accessories designing among others. It is essentially the process of creating designs for woven, knitted or printed fabrics or surface ornamented fabrics. Textile designers are involved with the production of these designs, which are used, sometimes repetitively, in clothing and interior decor items. The field encompasses the actual pattern making while supervising the production process. In other words, textile design is a process from the

22 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

raw material into finished product. Fibre, yarn and finishes are the key elements to be considered during the textile design procedure. A textile designer can earn anything in between Rs. 190,000 to 220,000 per year depending upon experience, skills and industry. Getting trained in textile design can open doors to various fields. CHALLENGES: With the large amount of designers designing various patterns, it’s a competitive industry. The work of a textile designer may also involve repeated exposure to various chemicals and dyes. Also, another challenge is in keeping up with the changing technology, working at irregular hours and coming up with design ideas quickly.

JOB PROSPECTS: The Indian textile industry contributes to about 14% of industrial production, 4% to the Indian GDP and employment to over 35 million people. The career opportunities for this field are varied. A person with a Textile Designing degree can opt to work as an apparel designer, pattern- maker, textile researcher, costume designer and much more. Bhushan Huddar, who is the product & development incharge at Livanto says that “It is difficult to state the scope because in today’s world the scope depends on the individual rather than any field. If we see things traditionally then the scope is decreasing due to closing down of mills and digitalization of designing. But a creative and hard working person may look at this as positive points. Conventional jobs in industrial houses are getting lesser but new opportunities are opening up if you know designing techniques well.” INSTITUTIONS: National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) National Institute of Design (NID) Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology National Institute of Fashion Designing (NIFD) INSTITUTES ABROAD OFFERING THIS COURSE: Philadelphia University University of the Arts, London Accademia Europea DIS Scandinavia

Prodigy

Body Wise A fitness enthusiast and a go-getter by nature, we talk to entrepreneur Neha Motwani, founder and CEO of Fitternity about how she nurtured her brainchild

What convinced you to leave the corporate world and set out on the entrepreneurial journey? I have always been one to make work fun. I thoroughly enjoyed my stint in the corporate world and always wanted to explore the fun of starting something of my own. I decided to jump into entrepreneurship when the idea of Fitternity started taking shape. I have always loved fitness (in any form) and have always yearned for a smarter way to explore fitness. Fitternity was that answer I needed to meet my personal and professional goals. How did the idea of Fitternity conceptualize and tell us more about how it works? Fitternity is a result of my weary experience of exploring fitness options. Fitternity is India’s biggest online fitness discovery and booking platform. It first functions as a directory for different kinds of fitness forms, with in-depth information like detailed descriptions, list of

26 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

amenities at the respective centre, kind of fitness options provided, images and more. Added to this are services like healthy tiffins and personal trainers along with soonto-be-launched categories of dieticians and nutritionists. These features allow our users to explore holistic fitness with over 8500 listings for them to view across Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Bangalore. The platform then facilitates experience by allowing users book a free trial or schedule a VIP session to try the services and know whether it suits them. Keeping with our customer first approach, our dedicated and well equipped Fitness Concierge assists them throughout this journey. Finally the platform becomes the best avenue for our customers to buy the fitness memberships of their choice. With easy payment options (Credit/Debit Cards, Netbanking , wallets, etc.) and clean invoicing, customers enjoy the convenience and accountable facility. We have also offered customers a hassle-free EMI payment option to allow them to buy memberships comfortably. Our motto stems from these points to become: Explore – Try – Buy. To sum it up you could call us India’s biggest fitness services aggregator and buying platform for all fitness services. The website was launched in early 2014 and after multiple business model pivots evolved into: - A hyper-local online discovery and booking platform providing trials and membership discounts - Holistic fitness aggregator including working out (gym, yoga, zumba, marathon, crossfit, etc.) and eating healthy (healthy tiffin services, healthy snacks, beverages etc.) - India’s largest fitness marketplace with 8,500 listings across Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi & Pune that has helped more than 100,000 customers access different fitness options

What were the initial challenges you faced while setting up this venture? Startups are riddled with challenges. Mainly because the good ones try to solve a problem and fill gaps that exists in the industry. Fitternity’s journey was no different.

When we launched our beta website early in 2014 there wasn’t a single startup / model in the space – Cut to present day there are over 45 startups operating in this segment. While some decided to follow our business model, others have brought the ClassPass model to India. And there are 4-5 startups springing up every month since the environment has become favorable for new entrants in the space. Hence competition does seem to be the first challenge we face. The biggest and perhaps classic challenge we face as aggregators is balancing demand (fitness consumers seeking fitness) & supply (fitness service providers – gym/studio owners & trainers) – Who’s problem are we solving first? Which problems are larger? How to fortify one side of the market? How to cater to demand with short supply and generate value to the supply side without having enough demand? These challenges inherently emerge from our need to change the buying & consumption behavior in this category. We have been able to address this challenge effectively over our journey and have been able to find the right balance by giving customers great options in their vicinity and connecting suppliers to new customers. We are now moving on to scaling this model effectively across markets. By virtue of being a dynamic tech startup some challenges we face: recruiting and building a high performing team across different locations along with dynamically adding verticals within our business model and constantly running experiments on new business lines while keeping track of current growth and progress. Now with a $1 million seed fund what are your future plans for Fitternity? It’s been a great journey so far. Our business has quadrupled in the last 6 months – with monthly unique visitors, transactions and sales of fitness memberships growing at 30% every month. Over 100,000 users have booked trials and purchased memberships through Fitternity across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Pune. We operate on a strong 30% conversions ratio on trials thereby generating great value for service providers. Engagement / repeat rate is going strong at 25% where users access Fitternity again to engage with service providers, discover other fitness services (like MMA & Kickboxing, functional training, healthy tiffins, kids fitness, healthy snacks and beverages). We are planning to venture into more cities in the next 3-6 months. Currently our operations are in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore & Pune. We are looking to add Ahmedabad, Hyderabad & Chennai in the list. Our free mobile app is also going to be out within January 2016 across iOS and Android app stores which will enable users to book workout sessions in a 'pay-per-use' format where users will now be able to combine different forms of workout in their routine and not miss their workouts if they’re travelling to a city we’re present in.

What are some of the things the youth can do to incorporate fitness into their daily lives? - Make time for yourself from your schedule: Start with 15 mins and increase as you move along (this is great for both physical fitness and mental health too) - Find a fit buddy: It is true that your chances to make fitness a habit increase substantially if you have company. - Be realistic: About your fitness goals, match of fitness form to your body and level of intensity you want to achieve and finding the right guidance for fitness - Start young, start now! : This is the best time for you to make fitness a habit. It may not seem like much right now because you feel invincible with youth, but you will realise how important this conditioning will become as you grow older and busier. How do you define holistic healthcare? To put it very simply, I define it as Healthy Selfishness. I believe taking care of yourself, by yourself is the best measure of achieving wellbeing. The reality is you know your body best and can choose not to ignore the signals it gives you. We go out on a limb to pamper ourselves cosmetically. We need to just do a fraction of that of our holistic wellbeing. An exercise can be that perfect start to this pampering by giving yourself as little as 15-20 minutes every day of a good workout where you condition your body, collect your thoughts and plan the day. Take it further with regular bodily checkups, setting and achieving certain fitness goals (like lose weight or be able to run a mile impromptu) and you are on your way to holistic healthcare. yi

LET’S LOOK AT FACTS Research has shown that 58% people lie on their resumes and 33% of them said the problem has worsened after the onset of the recession. Most of the falsifications, shockingly, are associated with educational qualifications. 70% college students said they would be willing to lie to land a dream job. These are quite common with applicants for senior management positions as well since they go through a series of interviews, their C.Vs aren’t much focused on. THE GOOD The experience you have should be showcased in a better way. It should highlight your roles and bring out the best in you. Using resume designs and unique layouts to project creativity are also great. Be as comprehensive without being repetitive. Explain each position in your experience and all your job responsibilities and skills. There is no good side to lying on your CV aside from being noticed from the sea of resumes that some companies receive every day. Slightly exaggerate but know when to stop. THE BAD Some may argue that lying on your CV just enough to impress the officials to interview you, is “not really lying” but it’s important to realize there are dire consequences for serious offences. If this is discovered after you are hired, it can result in, not only your job being retracted but will be jeopardizing your future prospects You could, in fact, be better suited to a job than an applicant that has more experience but being caught lying shows the level of credibility, or lack thereof, that you possess. And credibility is one of the most major things that officials seek in

prospective candidates. HOW FAR IS TOO FAR? Though lying might get you further on in the selection process, hiring officials aren’t living under a rock. You may be asked to prove your skills in the interview room, your ex-“boss” may be contacted and your educational institutes can be verified with. Background checks are a major part of the hiring protocol and when those are questionable, they are forced to reject your application. Nobody cares if you increased a month working at a company but if you create a fictitious company, it’s going to come back and bite you at some point. It is a felony and can hamper possible chances of employment with other companies in the future. HOW TO IMPROVE IT ANYWAY You can use the time spent stressing about what to fib, to improve your CV without all the lies. Research the company. Find the values it stands for, the qualities that its top employees embody and personality traits that gel with the company culture. Now more than anything, transferrable skills are taken into consideration. Showcase passion and talent in soft skills that relate to the post you are applying for. The interview plays the biggest role for any hiring HR manager and once you ace that and prove yourself to them, an average resume is not going to be a big hurdle at all. The intent for a job is a major factor in the decision-making and making that clear through knowledge is the best substitute for lack of experience. Realize there is a difference between exaggerating and plain lies. If the lines between these get blurred, rejections might not be the worst thing you face. That is when things start turning ugly. yi

THE FUNNIEST LIES ON RESUMES n An applicant applied for the

same position with two different resumes listing different work histories. n An applicant decided to include “Assistant to Prime Minister” of a country that didn’t have a prime minister in the first place. n A work experience that mentioned “Construction Supervisor” referred to the building of a doghouse n Under the Achievements section of the CV one applicant wrote: Being Sober n An applicant claimed to have 25 years of experience when he was 32 years of age. n One guy decided it was okay to use the work experience that his father had, just because their names were the same. n One candidate explained a gap year by stating that he was getting over the death of his cat for three months n Another candidate explained an arrest on his record by stating it was because they stole a pig, “but a really small one” n In answer to “Why should an employer hire you?” – “I bring doughnuts on Fridays” n Under comments: “It’s best for employers that I not work with people”

How To

HOW TO WRITE YOUR

RESEARCH

PROJECT IN

5 STEPS

30 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

Most students are faced with the daunting task of making a research project at least once in their lifetime. However the dilemma of getting their research project done in the correct manner is always daunting. Tasneem Patanwala lists five easy steps that will help you complete your research project like a pro

1

Deciding a research topic The first step to starting your research project is a very painstaking task in itself and also the most important of all because your entire research project will be based on how good or bad your research topic is. Determining a good and informative research topic is very essential for creating a good research project. Start by making a list of topics that interest you as making the research project will then be something very pleasant and you will enjoy doing it. Make sure that the topic you select is relevant and is not a very broad topic. The topic should be narrow and very specific.

2

Assembling research tools Accumulating your research materials is another important task you need to consider while making your research project. For this you will require primary as well as secondary sources of information. Primary sources are the original concepts you are writing about whereas secondary sources are comments regarding a primary source which you can search online about. You can search online for reference material which might help you locate open access journal articles, indexes of sources or other media. You can also take help from your local public library as it will help you find relevant sources which did not appear in your web based search. You can also take the aid of a librarian. However, it is very important to know whether your research sources are accurate or not. Make sure that the work has gone through a peer review process. Be careful about the websites you are gathering your information from. Rely on popular websites but make sure to cross check the resources. You can also trust on journals for your research information. Also try looking for footnotes or endnotes. You can also try finding valuable articles in relation to your respective topic.

3

Utilizing research material carefully After gathering your research tools wisely it’s time to utilize them correctly. After you have skimmed through your entire research material you will realize that not everything is likely to help you out. You have to decide which sources will be useful to you and which ones are irrelevant so that you can discard them. It is also very important to take sensible notes as you go further with your work as it will keep you well organized and also help you remember important points. As you take notes make sure that you also indicate important citations. Mentioning citations is extremely important as failing to do so may also lead to accusations of plagiarism or academic dishonesty. Make sure you

cite your sources appropriately and also build your bibliography. After doing the mentioned things organize and consolidate your notes and information adequately.

4

Constructing a layout This step consists of constructing a layout for your research project. Constructing a layout is an important step to creating your research paper. A good layout will keep you concentrated and willing to work further on your research paper. It will also speed up your writing process. Your layout should be brief, to the point and not very lengthy. You can arrange the information on the basis of their importance later. Make sure to come up with a speculative thesis statement for your research project. Your thesis statement should be an argumentative and convincing statement and not something that is very basic. Also include an introduction to your research project. Provide a literature review for your research project. Make sure to provide some sort of evidence to prove your research project is correct. After this, move on to the body part of your research project. Make sure to organize, compel and structure your body paragraphs. Your body paragraphs must include all the relevant information related to your research project. After compelling your body paragraphs move on to the conclusion for your research project. A good conclusion is very important as your entire research’s authenticity is based on it.

5

Dealing with writer’s block Give yourself a lot of time, ideally at least two weeks to work on your research project. If you are feeling exhausted by writing too much about your research project, shift your writing to some other topic that interests you as it will get your mind flowing. Also if you find a particular section difficult to write, move to another section that is easier or that interests you. Understand the concepts completely before penning them down. If you get stuck somewhere while writing your research project don’t get hung up on that particular word or sentence and instead move ahead and think about that perfect word or sentence later on. For now just focus on getting your ideas down on the paper. If you are struggling with a certain paragraph for a long time, take a short break from writing and come back to it after some time. Make sure you are in a good frame of mind and have clarity in your thinking while you are writing your research project. Your research project should be well organized. yi

With the craze about sports in the masses increasing exponentially, the need for sports psychologists is rising. Meera Jakkli brings to you the lowdown on this up-andcoming branch of psychology

Career Paths As a graduate in Sports Psychology, you can pursue: 1) Research – A lot of research is conducted on the effect of sports exercise on the body. The relationship between personality, mindset and performance is one that is examined in detail. Some areas of research currently are the effects of participation in sports by the youth, how teams can perform better using personalities and other psychological techniques. Evolutionary perspectives are also being taken into consideration in recent research. Observation of teams, players and their trends and successful conversions of those inferences into theories and practical plans are also being researched upon. 2) Applied/Clinical Sports Psychology – Applied sports psychology is the practical application of the research being conducted. The work involves coaching, mentoring and counselling sports players, coaches and teams on the importance of psychological factors during the game. They use techniques like Goal Setting, Imagery, Pre-performance routines to boost the team or individual’s performance. Different aspects like pressure, social situation, team mates and their personalities are taken into consideration while counselling. It also includes following up with the rehabilitation process of any player that has undergone a major injury or is going through mental stress. A school or a university may also hire a sports psychologist to encourage and help the competitive players. 3) Academic Psychology - These either work in colleges or universities as professors for sports psychology and its various sub-fields. Alternatively, they advise coaches on the best way to go about bettering their team’s performance by using psychometric techniques.

We talk to Shayamal Vallabhjee, Sports Scientist and EQ expert on what sports psychology is all about Tell us a little more about yourself. I’m a sports scientist and an EQ consultant; EQ’s aspect is sports psychology. Sports science is the study of the physiological parameters that give an athlete a performance advantage. So I look at all the variables, be it physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, training methodology, psychology, sports vision, nutrition; all those aspects and I map it together to see what would give an athlete a 0.5% advantage. In my field, I’ve spent 15 years in professional sport. I travelled a little bit for the ATP tour, the EA Sports PGA tour, the Asian games, the Commonwealth games, and then about 8-9 years ago I also started delving into the psychology aspect in order to understand the role of emotions in stabilising performance. My job as a sports scientist is not to answer questions, but is in fact to question the answers. My job is to take the existing science and question it, and dissect it, and keep digging deeper and deeper. It is to always play the Devil’s advocate to the science, to understand if we are thinking in the right direction or not. As a sports psychologist, which are the areas you tend to focus on while you’re training with a sportsperson? There are various aspects, but if you want to stick predominately to the EQ aspect, then what happens is that you have a thought, and that thought triggers an emotion, and it’s the emotion that triggers off an action. Whether you’re on the field or whether you’re off the field, you need to know the emotional state that you perform best at in. For this, you need to have a lot of mental resilience. Mental resilience is the ability to stick to your game plan irrespective of the outstanding circumstances. Now, mental resilience is superimposed with certain emotional patterns as well. When things are not going your way, your emotion is going to change, because you’re going to be upset, you’re going to be angry, but your mental resilience will come in to sticking to that plan. So that is what I teach athletes. Do you think the youth can benefit from this in their daily lives? I don’t think just the youth; I think everyone can benefit from this. My advice to any young person starting off is irrespective of what field you’re in, irrespective of how good you are, people would invest in you

as a person. So my question is what are you investing in making the person you are, better? And it starts of by doing a SWOT analysis of the person. Reflections of this SWOT analysis need to happen periodically, because we are constantly evolving, every cell in our body is changing every single second. And even our minds are changing. So the answers of last time are not going to remain relevant forever. There’s a beautiful study that came out of the Stanford University that says that your success is about the ability to be adapting to the changing environments. If someone is putting so much emphasis on your ability to adapt that means that they are putting emphasis on the fact that everything is ever-changing. You have worked with both the South African cricket team as well as the Indian cricket team. What were the major differences you noticed between them with respect to their strengths and weaknesses? I’ve worked with our Indian athletes for the past 8 years now, and one of the characteristics is that in India, we don’t work hard enough on our physical attributes. I’ve had numerous athletes, whether you’re a batter, baller, badminton player, or a squash player; an Indian athlete will come and tell me you know what I’m on the tennis court or the squash court for 4 hours, and he thinks he’s done work. A South African would have to be in the gym for 4 hours to earn the right to get on the court to practise. So that’s the difference in our thinking. South Africans look at play as a privilege. So they do the hard yards first, which literally gets you into the area to play. Whereas in India, we look at play as our form of practice. And that’s been the most distinguishing difference. What was the inspiration behind H.E.A.L Institute? H.E.A.L is a sports medicine and high-performance centre. I set it up because the country has a very dire need to raise the standards of non-surgical care in the countr y. If our athletes and our children or anyone has a hope in hell, then we need doctors and practitioners and nurses who understand how to look after them. We need to create an ecosystem of people who understand that pain. H.E.A.L was set up to educate the country on non-surgical care. We’re also building a tech platform currently so that we can disseminate information quicker. yi

CITY BUZZ

Sustaining the Now The concept of sustainable development has caught the attention of change makers the world over. So much so that the United Nations has taken it up as an initiative to reach every corner of India. Pearl Mathias talks about what this means for our country and the world at large

W

e are in the midst of a generation that is progressively moving forward on their own terms in fields unimagined by people in the earlier centuries. We are quick to think and prompt to act. Being caught up in this successful humdrum and getting ourselves places, we fail to look at what’s happening around us, in our very own society. We are so easily drawn towards all things nice that we don’t care enough to look beyond all of it. We overlook the bigger picture, the real picture. In the past year, there have been several glorious moments for India as a country and they’ve been much talked about for months on end. What about the less talked about stories? What role do they play in the building up of our nation or are they just as easily forgotten? Personally I hadn’t given much thought to it till I attended the United Nations Young

Change makers Conclave that was held in Mumbai. Sanjay Jha, the Executive Director of Dale Carnegie Training India, spoke about Gajendra Singh, whom a lot of people didn’t seem to recall hearing about. He jumped from a tree during an AAP rally, thus sparking a blame game inside and outside Parliament on the plight of farmers in distress. This moment caused a stir in Mr. Jha, who then took the decision to reach out and empower people not just in the city but also in the remote areas where such cases are now frequent. Mr. Piyush Pandey , Executive Chairman of Ogilvy and Mather, narrated a story depicting the common scenario prevalent in every household. The story of how we muster up respect for somebody and butter them up, pleasing them in whatever way we can only when we are in dire need for something that is beyond our control. We take

for granted those who make our daily living so easy – the house help, the cylinder delivery guys, the plumbers and carpenters. Yet, these are the same people we don’t give two hoots about. He stated in simple terms that unless each of us garners enough respect for every individual out there we encounter, this world will not progress. Our feelings of superiority must diminish and we need the humbleness that comes from knowing that at the end of the day, we cannot get by without the help of the other. Achieving this goal of sustainable development is not only the job of the rich and powerful but the duty of every citizen. Every single person can do what he does best and use it to create awareness in the society. One such example is that of Poulomi Basu. Hailing from a traditional family where women got married early and started their family, she paved her own path and followed it with a camera strapped around her neck. Her passion for photography took her to the corners of the country, where she was exposed to the plight of women who had no access to proper sanitation and latrines. Denial of this basic right moved her to create a documentary on this subject, which then went on to become a nationwide campaign, drawing in the attention of thousands of eager people willing

to help. Hundreds of her pictures portraying the real India are now on display the world over. It doesn’t matter where you come from, what’s more important is where you’re headed. As Mr. Jha stated, we don’t need another farmer committing suicide for us to wake up and realize what our country has come to. We need to be more aware of these happenings and instead of being momentarily inspired we should step up and do something about it. In the words of Ms. Lakshmi Pratury, founder of INK Talks, be shaken, be inspired and be courageous enough to act and follow through. To create the future, we need to change today.

We talk to Natasha Mudhar CEO & MD – Sterling Media who is currently spearheading a historic UN campaign in India. As the India Director of the campaign, she plans to take the new goals on Sustainable Development to every corner of India — especially the hardest to reach communities. WHAT LED TO THE AWARENESS OF THE NEED FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN OUR COUNTRY? Leading philanthropist and acclaimed British filmmaker Richard Curtis, founded the Global Goals campaign, which aims to promote the new Global Goals for Sustainable Development that were agreed by 193 world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015, to citizens globally. The ultimate goal is to end poverty, fight injustice and inequality, and

tackle the threat of climate change by 2030. The premise of the campaign stems from a credible point Richard made “You can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are”. India is a developing nation and faces multiple challenges. Paradoxically, the country is also the world’s biggest democracy with the world’s youngest population, which, if made aware of The Global Goals, could lead the way in achieving great change. India is at the cusp of change and the plan to create positive change has already begun, through a range of initiatives that aim to empower Indians ground-up. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has driven the message of “Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vikas” (With Everyone’s Support, there’s Progress for everyone) to citizens nationally. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE CAMPAIGN AND HOW WILL IT BE CARRIED OUT BY THE UNITED NATIONS? The Global Goals campaign is supported by the United Nations. As UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon said “The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are our shared vision of humanity and a social contract between the world’s leaders and the people. They are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success.” World leaders are committed to 17 Global Goals to achieve three extraordinary things in the next 15 years. End extreme poverty. Fight inequality & injustice. Reduce the effects of climate change. The larger aim is to become that generation that ends global poverty, the most determined to fight injustice, inequality and the last to live with the threat of climate change. In India, the aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the Global Goals to each and every citizen. Some of the ways we activated the campaign are by launching the largest collaborative education project the world has ever seen, The World’s Largest Lesson, in partnership with UNICEF and with

support from TES Global, UNESCO and ELS Educational Services. NGO Magic Bus conducted classroom lessons in schools across the country on the Global Goals by translating the World’s Largest Lesson online toolkit into local languages. Youth icon Arjun Kapoor participated at this year’s Global Citizen Festival in New York City as an Indian Ambassador for the event. This is the same event Rt. Hon Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi attended in 2014 during his visit to the USA and pledged his government’s commitment to eradicating poverty from India. HOW CAN THE YOUTH CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS ACHIEVING THIS DEVELOPMENT? With India having the largest youth population in the world, children and young people will be most affected by the implementation of the goals. It is their future we are committing to improve. The youth, whether they are students or the employed and unemployed, need to be given a sense of ownership in the campaign as in doing so, they will become more empowered and motivated to act and encourage change. The Global Goals campaign doesn't just target urban or the “cool” millennial audiences but it is about reaching individuals irrespective of their caste, economic background, creed etc who need to be informed about the goals that have been agreed to support their now and future. Our campaigns thus have to be multi-pronged to reach every touch-point as possible in multiple ways. For instance, as well as targeting online savvy communities, we also conducted grassroots activities which were aimed at capturing the attention of parents and children in rural areas who are most receptive to change and hold the key to India’s development and future. We also planned activities in media-dark villages of impoverished states like Bihar via our partner Reliance. yi

Awareness

Not So Blurred Lines Sexual consent has become one of the most important worldwide conversations off late. Madhura Sansare delves into the depths of this much-talked about philosophy, and reminds you that yes means yes, and no means no It all started when she met him. She met him through some common family friends, and he seemed like a very nice guy. He was educated, polite, understanding; everything you would wish for in a future partner. With their parents’ approval, they started hanging out more. They went for dates, held hands, spoke on the phone all the time; they matured into a relationship. After a while, both their parents started asking them to define their relationship further. She liked him, he liked her; and though it hadn’t really been a long time since they got to know each other, they decided to take the leap and get engaged. It was the day after the engagement when her mother entered her bedroom and closed the door. She knew it was serious; her mother always hated closed doors.

36 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY FEBRUARY2016 2016

She sat up on the bed as her mother sat next to her and proceeded to congratulate her on her engagement. She warily asked her mother what had happened that she was so serious. Her mother replied, “You know what this means, right? You’re an engaged woman. The date of your marriage is set. Your fiancée is going to have certain expectations out of you now. And it is your duty as his future wife to fulfil them.” She was confused. What did her mother mean? Sensing her perplexity, her mother proceeded to explain that these duties constituted of the physical nature of a relationship. Uncomfortable, she told her mother she understood, just in an attempt to stop the conversation. She had already spoken to her fiancée about her discomfort and unease with regards to this, and he had understood. She was sure it wasn’t going to be as big of an issue as her mother was portraying; she had to be mistaken. She hushed her mother, told her she had it all in control, and scurried out of the room. Turns out, it wasn’t her mother who was mistaken, it was her. Few days into the engagement, her fiancée started getting frisky with her. She tried to stop him, but he would get angry. The next time he did, she remembered her mother’s advice, and believing it was her duty as his future wife, she didn’t stop him. Encouraged, he took it a step further; they had sex that night. He hadn’t asked her if she wanted this, she hadn’t said yes, but she hadn’t said no either, so obviously he thought that he had her consent, right? So why was she feeling vulnerable, and scared? She tried to reason with herself that she wasn’t even a virgin, and this time, she was just completing her duty. But then why did it feel so wrong? Why did she feel like a victim? If you ask us, we think it’s because she was one. If we go by technical terminologies, rape has a very precise definition. Rape is defined as an act of sexual assault that involves penetration without consent. But should that be all that can be constituted as rape? And what does ‘without consent’ even mean? Is saying no the only equivalent of not giving consent? What is consent? It is not as tricky as it sounds. Consent is given only and only when both partners have explicitly agreed to a physical act, together. If one partner has said no, or hasn’t said anything, or either of you hasn’t bothered to ask the other explicitly, in simple terms, you do not have their consent. The idea of consent is often misunderstood in our society. Not just our society in India, but the human society as a whole. It is often said that wearing sexy clothing is equal to asking for it, that silence during the act is equal to consent, that if there are alcohol or drugs involved, it is clear that neither party is going to deny it, hence they have each other’s consent. Let us be clear. Unless you have looked a prospective partner in the eye and asked them, explicitly, if they want to engage in a physical act, and they have said yes,

you do not have their consent. And if it is that simple to be sure about something, if it is as simple as asking, why not just do it, right? Why is consent important? People have a right to their own bodies. Every person, whether man or woman, has a right to decide what happens to their bodies, what they do with it, and who they choose to have as a partner. It is always said that trust and respect are the founding stones of a healthy, happy relationship. It is vital to understand that this applies to the physical part of a relationship as well, and you can’t expect to have trust and respect in other parts of your relationship without having it here. Even if the two concerned partners are not in a monogamous relationship, you owe it to your prospective partner to be respectful of their wishes and decisions. Consent isn’t a privilege; it is a basic human right. Why is it important to educate the youth about the same? There are a lot of misconceptions about consent prevalent among the youth today. Maybe it is so because this topic is considered taboo, maybe it is because there isn’t enough awareness about the topic, maybe it is even because of the gender roles prevalent in society; but it is commonly found that the youth tends to rely a lot more on misinterpreted physical cues than on direct verbal ones. Things are changing in our society now, though. Specified gender roles are slowly diminishing. Sexuality is being brought out from that dark, damp cave that it was always hidden in, and being celebrated. These changes are slow, and gradual, but they are definitely happening. In wake of these changes, we cannot stress enough on how important it is for the youth to completely understand the idea of sexual consent. For example, there is a very common misconception that heterosexual men specifically, don’t need to be taken consent from. The societal gender norm that a man will never deny the chance of having sex is the culprit for this misconception. Consent is not categorised into genders, sexual preferences, race, or any of the other categories that we as humans have divided ourselves into. Consent is uniform, and it applies to everyone. Basically, yes, if you are a heterosexual woman who wants to engage in a physical act with a man, it is just as important that you get his consent as it is for him to get yours. Sexual consent may have become a very confusing topic of late, with almost everybody talking about it over the net and giving their opinions, but the essence of the entire worldwide conversation can be stripped down to one simple phrase; Just ask them. There is no alternative to consent, and honestly, there needn’t be one. Talking about what you want to do is humane, legal and well, sexy. So go on, just ask. yi

2016 FEBRUARY YOUTHINCMAG.COM 37

Nirva Vira I really don't have any experience in this but from what I perceive sexual consent is far from propositioning. Two individuals just know when they want to have sex and there is also foreplay that leads up to it. If a partner does not want to have sex, he or she should let the other person know. Respecting that decision is sexual consent. Look up the registered rape rate in India, think about marital rape and then multiply that with 3. That’s how important it is in India

Punya Suri Sexual consent is present only when the parties involved specifically mention that they’re ready. The only form of knowing whether or not a person is ready is by asking them. However, this is not applicable when either one is under the influence of drugs or alcohol due to lack of judgement skills. Also, blackmailing and/or pressurizing someone to engage in non-consensual sexual activity (or sexual assault and rape) leaves a longlasting emotional scar.

Nukul Jain Sexual consent is absence of force or coercion during sex. It is what makes sex a pleasant act for both the partners. I think it is the basis for a healthy sex life and a happy relationship. India or abroad, it is of prime importance. Though, it is highly underrated in India.

Itisha Singh Sexual consent is the positive and voluntary decision of the participants to engage in any sort of sexual activity. Everything from inappropriate touching to sex is included. Every day we read about horrifying incidents that take place in India, but what people don't seem to understand is that clothes, time of outing and consuming alcohol aren't forms of sexual consent and invitations to rape. *Consent is never implied and cannot be assumed.* Thus phrases like "she was asking for it" are wrong and need to stop.

Yash Radia For me, sexual consent should be something when both the partners agree and are willing to get intimate. But, violating or forceful attempt shouldn't be tolerated at any cost. In India, especially after seeing the Nirbhaya case, there seriously needs to be a change in the law, for any forceful attempt or rape the rapist should be given immediate punishment that he/she regrets.

STUDENT OPINION POLL 38 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

Husain Rajkotwala Sexual consent is like a license to drive a car. You have it? - "take the car where ever you want man!". You don't? - "you better not go close to the driver's seat!" A sexual consent is not a "chalti kya 9-12" and you getting a reply "ek ghante ka 100rs". Sexual consent is more like making a move and the girl/guy doesn't object. Probably sexual consent is what India lacks. The awareness of sexual consent is not found amongst the ones who rape, its found amongst the ones who sit there watching and doing nothing, thinking that if the help the girl in need the might be charged under " attempt to rape".

ANSWER ANSWER

At this stage without much knowledge about the professional courses, higher studies, etc. and what they lead to, it is difficult for him to decide. Since he is much above average in his studies, and is interested in science and maths, he could opt for plus two with physics, chemistry, mathematics, English, and any other optional subject, and use the next two years to assess whether his interest in physics, in particular, and science in general, is backed by his ability to handle the rigour of these subjects. Having studied science, he would be free to pursue science related courses or opt out after class 12th, and take up non-science courses.

n the words of Christian in Moulin Rouge, “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return.” That truly is the essence of love and of living. We could be the kind of person who wears their heart on their sleeve or someone who is indifferent to all the mushiness in the world, but there is nothing more sincere than genuinely feeling for someone other than you. We begin to exhibit selflessness and fondness which we never thought we possessed. That is precisely what love does to us, it transforms us into something other than ourselves and at the same time letting us be who we are. Relationships form the core of our being. They are vital in shaping the people we inadvertently become. The bond we share with our parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, neighbors and even our pets for that matter, help us grow and realize the value of things we otherwise take for granted. It is so easy to overlook the people around us and what they do for us day after day. How often do we turn back and whisper a thank you or even do something small yet meaningful in return to show them how we really feel. In our cover story this Valentine’s month, we bring you ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Tales of love personified in various ways through different relationships. We look at a young, unmarried man who didn’t shy away from adopting a Down Syndrome baby and raising him on his own. A gay couple who courageously

went forth with what they really wanted, to be together and went ahead and got married. The bond shared between siblings who live countries apart. A girl who cares about animals, not just pets, but strays and neglected animals as well. Decade-old friends who reunited one fine day and have made sure to make time for each other ever since. While we read through these compelling stories, we need to understand that not everyone can recount a tale worth sharing. We may be drawn to the ever dramatic lives of celebrities or twisted movie plots with make believe scenarios, but in all honesty we need to rise above all the spicy controversy. The wait for something magical to take place has never gotten anyone anywhere. Engage in the here and now. Make time in between busy schedules for people that matter. Practise gratitude and appreciation while you still can. Learn to give more than you get without the cold calculations in your mind. Rather than whiling away our time and worrying about meeting the right person, we should spend our days trying to be the right person. A better child, student, sibling, employee, neighbor or pet lover. Let’s learn to love more and be more during this season, whether you’re single or dating, living with your family or away from home. We might not love every bit of another person, but as they say, “People call those imperfections, but no, that’s the good stuff.” yi

COVERSTORY TEACHER & STUDENT

The Guru-Shishya Connect

Mandeera Tracy Chaudhari has studied Bharat Natyam under her guru, Sandhya Tai for over 30 years. We talk to her about what this relationship means to her and how it changed her life

Above: Mandeera Tracy Chaudhari Below : Sandhya Tai with Mandeera

44 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR GURU, SANDHYA TAI. Normally when you think of a guru you think of somebody who’s a lot older than her student; someone who keeps preaching and giving philosophical lessons. It wasn’t like that between Sandhya Tai and me. She’s only 10 years older than I am. When I started off studying dance, I started it just like a hobby class. But over a period of time, I saw that this was not like a regular class because she made it so. We used to go out a lot. My guru took me out for a lot of programmes. In fact, I saw my first Russian ballet, The Swan Lake with her; because she thought that I needed exposure to dance forms apart from Bharat Natyam. It was only because of her that I could go watch performances of dance legends like Protima Bedi and Sanjukta Panigrahi. Even beyond these performances, she has taken me to the aquarium and melas. At that time I thought of it as just entertainment; I just thought she loved me a lot and wanted to spend time with me. But it wasn’t until much later that I realised that her intention was to have me observe movement and expression. In Bharat Natyam, we have something called Mainavi Gati, which has to do with the movement of a fish; so when we would go to an aquarium she would subtly tell me to look at how the fish is moving. When we used to go for these horse rides, she would tell me to look at how the horse is standing, in its particular stance and posture. We call it the Ashvakranta, and there is actually a lot of resemblance between the posture of the dance and the posture of a horse. I started studying under her when I was 10, and it’s been 30 years today that I’ve been studying under her. In today’s day and age, sharing a relationship with somebody for 30 years is a feat. You can’t even be sure to have a good, healthy relationship with your spouse for as many years now. I can say that we have stood the test of time and seen it all, the ups and the downs and everything in between.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT WITH YOUR TEACHER? I’ve been with her for so many years that it’s quite hard to pinpoint one single moment, but if I had to, it’d very obviously be my Arangetram. Being her first student, she had a lot of expectations from me and I wanted to fulfil those expectations. She was very happy with the Arangetram that I did, and I think that was the first memorable moment that I had with her. After that, the moment she chose me to present the Marathi Nirupan, which is like a margam of around 18 items and also the research work of my Dada Guru, Acharya Parvati Kumar; that was also a very memorable moment because I don’t think anyone in the class has presented this Nirupan after I did. These moments have been like wow moments in my life that I’ve had with her and they wouldn’t have been possible if not for her training and her guidance. HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR RELATIONSHIP HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? Through college, I was a very good student, very disciplined. I give myself credit for that. I believed in everything my guru told me. So if she said, “Mandeera, this is good for you”, I believed in it and I did it. For example, I majored in Sociology. She wanted me to major in Sanskrit, but at the time, no English medium college was teaching the subject, and I could not have done my graduation in the Marathi medium. So I majored Sociology. I was also pursuing Dance very seriously at the time. She had told me that if I wanted to pursue a career in Dance, I should learn it. I went on to do my Masters in Sociology and then followed it up with another Masters in Dance from my guru’s institute, Bharat College of Fine Arts, which has Nagpur University affiliation. Then one fine day she told me I should give my PET exam. This was long after I’d finished my education, I’d gotten married, and I had kids. I remember telling her that I was unsure about being able to pursue an education again after having been out of it for so long, and she just said, “If I’ve given you the best in the knowledge that

Though I can tell her everything and share absolutely anything with her, there is a line that I would never cross with her. It’s a maryada that is essential to the relationship between a teacher and her student.

I have, I’m sure you will do it.” The PET exam is a common entrance exam for a Ph.D. I gave it, and I passed, and I’m currently doing my Ph.D. under her from the Kavi Kulguru Kalidas University, Nagpur. STUDENTS ARE GENERALLY INTIMIDATED BY THEIR TEACHERS. WHAT WAS IT ABOUT YOUR TEACHER THAT MADE YOU SO COMFORTABLE, ENOUGH TO STILL LEARN UNDER HER FOR SO MANY DECADES? There’s this Hindi saying that says ‘Bhit bina nahi hoye priti’, which means, without fear, there is no love. I wouldn’t say that I’m scared or intimidated by her; I would actually term it as respect. Even today, if my guru walks into class, I will stand. Or if I’m sitting too casually, I will cross my legs. I don’t see this in children today. Times have changed, and today these children believe that outside the classroom, their guru is their friend. It is not like that with my guru and me. Though I can tell her everything and share absolutely anything with her, there is a line that I would never cross with her. It’s a maryada that is essential to the relationship between a teacher and her student. WHAT DO YOU ADMIRE MOST ABOUT YOUR TEACHER? I admire her dedication to the dance form and her thirst for knowledge. She doesn’t believe in rest time. She’ll just go crazy working, and teaching, and studying, and researching. Everything for her is a form of learning. I remember when we had gone for a study tour of the temples and sculptures in Tamil Nadu. We would do different taals, or we would learn the 108 karnas, just in the way that you would play a memory game in the train for fun. So by the end of the trip we had all learnt 108 karnas. Or she would ask us to sing a popular Bollywood song in Mishragati or Tishragati; something that gets her students thinking about everything in connection with dance. Another thing I admire about my guru is that she’s very patient. She has lots to give, but she is very down to earth. She always believes she have more to learn. And truth is, students can be very nasty at times. They can say terrible things about you, but she’ll just forgive them. She’ll say it’s okay, they made a mistake; it’s okay, let it go, let’s move on. My relationship with her is very beautiful and I believe I’m very fortunate to get a guru like her. She made sure to hone my talent and impart her knowledge onto me perfectly. And I will always be thankful to her for that. yi 2016 FEBRUARY YOUTHINCMAG.COM 45

COVERSTORY SIBLINGS

The Sibling Bond

Living separately from the ones you love can be hard, but living apart from your sibling is a completely different ballgame. Tanya and Jash Balwani have lived apart since they were kids, in separate countries, and they tell us about how the bond of siblings can withstand any kind of distance

Above : Jash Balwani Below : Tanya Balwani

46 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

YOU HAVEN’T TECHNICALLY SPENT YOUR CHILDHOOD TOGETHER. SO WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN AN EXPERIENCE THAT YOU TWO BONDED OVER? TANYA: We spent three years apart and then we stayed together for about 4 years, and now we stay in two different cities and it’s been almost a year now. The distance has only made us a lot more independent and yet at the same time a lot more supportive and protective of each other. So I guess living apart and leading our individual lives and figuring out our place in this world has been an experience that we’ve bonded over time and again. We don’t just wake up one morning and realize that so much has changed and we’ve grown up, in fact we get to see bits and pieces of it every now and then and that has a joy of its own. JASH: We haven't spent much time together, but every single minute with her has been like a bonding moment. From the late night movies we saw on laptop to the crazy dances we did, it all counted. But perhaps the most important thing was that we have always had each other’s back, with every mistake we have made. IS IT HARD TO DEAL WITH LIVING SEPARATELY WITH SEPARATE PARENTS? HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT? TANYA: Our parents have lived apart for a significant amount of their marriage and it’s because of their work and careers but then again they find a way to make it work. We’ve never seen that as a negative aspect of our lives, rather we’ve always aimed to be as hard-working and driven when it came to our goals. And living apart as a family has only taught us to never take anything or anyone for granted. Being apart does get difficult at times for all of us but then we remind ourselves that home or family isn’t about whether or not we’re together or living under the same roof. It’s a lot like branches on a tree. We grow in different directions but our roots remain as one. JASH: It’s definitely hard to live separately in two different cities. But I guess we make do with all the memories we have made with each other. Recalling upon them from

time to time makes me feel bit better in my heart. WHEN DID YOU FIRST START BONDING? TANYA: There was never really a time or place where we started bonding or where or when we got closer. We were always tethered to each other but with every moment that we spent together and every argument or fight we had and will have, inevitably, and no matter how far apart we are, family will always be above all else. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS THAT YOU LIKE TO DO TOGETHER? TANYA: We love binge watching and hogging on midnight snacks like there’s no tomorrow. That’s an actual excuse that we give our parents. Who knows there might not be a tomorrow and we need to know how Sherlock faked his death. DO YOU HAVE ANY SIMILAR INTERESTS? TANYA: A lot actually and that’s mostly because he likes to do whatever it is that I’m doing. In fact, he’s quite the charmer and mostly known to be the fun guy amongst my friends and I’m not always happy about that. He says that he likes to do it because it annoys me but then deep down everyone knows that he looks up to his older sister. I’m kidding but it doesn’t make it any less annoying, I guess all younger siblings are like that. JASH: We do. Most of the things that I like to do, she’s already doing. I see her as my role model so whatever she does, I like to do the same. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER? TANYA: He likes the fact that he’s taller and stronger than me now. Thanks to adolescence he can totally beat me at wrestling but I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. He’s better at cooking so that basically means I never have to step in the kitchen when he’s around. But no, on a serious note, what I absolutely admire about Jash is that he cares a lot about people in general and that’s what makes him special. It’s rare enough to know a person with that quality and to have someone like that as a

brother; I honestly cannot express my gratitude in words. JASH: I like her crazy ideas and her madness the most. She makes these crazy faces that crack me up all the time. But what I like most about her is that she has a very soft spot for me, and that’s fabulous. TELL US ONE OF EACH OTHER’S MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENTS. TANYA: Since we’re talking about the time that shall not be mentioned and we do have plenty of dirt on each other, we’ve come to a mutual agreement of sharing something that’s haunted us both for most parts of our childhoods, which are naked baby pictures. Parents need to know that they can be traumatizing for a kid between the ages 4 and 14. WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE MORE LIKE FRIENDS THAN SIBLINGS? TANYA: We’re a lot like both. When we hang out or we’re doing something together, like travelling or a sport, we are a lot like friends but at the end of the day our bond is one that’s forged of stone, paper, scissors; all the elements of the universe, sweat, blood and Kryptonite. And nothing ever could compare to that. JASH: You can actually say that we are a lot like both but at the end of the day, we are siblings and nothing in the universe can change that because it's just perfect as it is. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF HAVING A SIBLING IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY ALTOGETHER? TANYA: We were in two different countries for about three years, and I was 10 and he was 5 when I first moved to India and he was still in Hong Kong. The greatest challenge was not being able to be there for the important things like the kindergarten graduation, the birthdays, the camps and the school plays and having to be okay with just a phone or Skype call and a few pictures every now and then. Today, although we’re in two different cities the only way we get an idea of what we’re doing or what’s going on in our lives is through our Instagram and Twitter handles and it’s not that great of an experience. JASH: We stayed apart for a while but then were lucky enough to stay together again, only 3 years after she moved to India. I was the happiest person in the world when we got to stay together for a bit. But now we’re apart again, and I can only hope it’s not for long. yi

48 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

YOU CHOSE QUITE AN UNCONVENTIONAL ROUTE, AT LEAST FOR THE INDIAN MENTALITY. HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT WITH MAKING THE DECISION TO ADOPT YOUR SON? On 13th September, 2014; it’s my father’s birthday. I visited an orphanage called Missionaries of Charity in Indore, which is my hometown. I’m a software engineer for Barclays in Pune. I was born and bought up in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. And I keep visiting Indore as my family still lives there. It was my first visit to an orphanage, and at my visit I saw a lot of kids; some adopted, some still not adopted. And there was this one kid who nobody wanted to adopt. His name was Binny. Upon further inquiry, I found that Binny was the only kid who wasn’t adopted, because he was a ‘special child’, as the caretakers anointed him. Now back then I didn’t know what a special child was. The caretakers told me he was an abnormal child and he won’t have a normal mental growth. They told me his legs are weak, he has some issue with his eyesight and he has a hole in his heart. They also told me his parents gave him up to the orphanage because he isn’t a normal child. Even after I left the orphanage that day, I could picture Binny’s face in my head, so I thought on it and decided to adopt him. I wasn’t aware of any of the adoption guidelines yet so when I went over to the centre head of Missionaries of Charity, they told me that they couldn’t let me adopt Binny as it was against the guidelines; I wasn’t married and was under the age of 30, which used to be the minimum age for single parent adoption. I told them that was okay, but I wish to take care of all of his expenses and when I get married in the future, I will adopt him. They agreed and I started taking care of his expenses since then. It has been a long and hard battle from then till now to adopt my son. HOW DID YOUR PARENTS REACT TO YOUR DECISION? Well, at the start, my parents weren’t really happy with my decision. And it was for very obvious reasons.

The thing is, we as a culture do put a lot of importance on ‘what will people say?’ In fact, even if were doing something wrong and other people at large are appreciating it, we will accept it. My parents were just troubled and worried at the mental, physical, and financial turmoil I was going through for this adoption. Secondly, I was trying to adopt a special needs child. And even today, in India, it is hard to find a partner ready to accept an adopted special child. It is after all, an additional responsibility. But the day I took over the custody of the child, everybody started appreciating it. Articles were published all over the media, and people were happy and appreciative of my efforts. My parents also were very happy and proud of me. So while it did take a while for them to understand and accept my decision, in the end, all was well. All they care about now is their grandson, and they have no concerns anymore. WAS THE ADOPTION PROCESS HARD FOR YOU? HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IT? The adoption process was quite intense. From being someone who didn’t know anything about Down syndrome or India’a adoption process, today, I have gotten to a place where I have experienced all of it firsthand. Binny was moved across various centers of Missionaries of Charity; Indore, Delhi and Bhopal. At the start, they tried to hide him from me, told me that they would file a police complaint against me if I didn’t stop pursuing him. I have gotten the media involved, I’ve spoken to CARA (Central Adoption Resource Authority), ministers like Maneka Gandhi and Maya Singh among others for help, and basically gone through a whole lot of travel, emotional and financial turmoil in my quest for Binny. My only thought was that I wanted to give this boy a family, who was abandoned by his only because he had Down syndrome. DID YOU ALWAYS PLAN TO ADOPT? Adoption has been my childhood dream. I was always inspired by my parents to help people. They haven’t adopted anybody, but they’ve always helped people in whatever way they can. The first example of adoption that I’d ever seen in my life was Sushmita Sen’s, when she adopted her first daughter some 15-20 years ago. And it was right then that I had decided I

My only thought was that I wanted to give this boy a family, who was abandoned by his, only because he had Down syndrome.

will be adopting a child in the future. I hadn’t decided then if I will be adopting a girl or a boy, or whether it will be after marriage or before. My initial plan was to, of course, adopt after marriage. But I knew forever that I will adopt a child. AVNISH WILL NEED A LOT OF THERAPEUTIC AS WELL AS MEDICAL ASSISTANCE AS HE GROWS UP. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO DEAL WITH THAT? The truth is, as a country, we are not ably equipped to deal with the needs of a special child, especially one with Down Syndrome. There isn’t enough awareness about it in our society. After these articles were published, I have received a lot of calls from all over the world, including UK, US, France, Australia, Canada, among others, telling me of various ways to help and take care of a child with Down Syndrome. In India, the ratio for kids with Down Syndrome is 1 in 500-600 kids. And there are more cases in the US and Europe comparatively. Now though Down Syndrome cannot be cured completely, it can be corrected up to 50-60%. Avnish has a hole in his heart, which will get corrected by surgery. His legs are weak, so he will need a therapist for that. He will also need speech therapy. My aim is to make sure that Avnish doesn’t have to depend on anybody in the future. I want to make him independent. WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THE YOUTH AFTER YOUR EXPERIENCE? My message to the society after almost one and a half years of my experience with adoption is very simple. I’m a single person from a middle class family. I’d just like to tell the parents at large, who are educated, belong to well to do families; they are dropping their kids of at an orphanage because of the fear of society. I’d just like to tell them to not care about the society and just take care of their child. Secondly, I think the government and the society should encourage people who want to adopt a child, whether they’re married or single. After all, we are all human beings and we are here to help each other. If I want to adopt a child, it’s my prerogative, and it’s a good thing. So why should anyone else think about why I’m doing it, and if nobody does it usually, why am I doing it? We always think from a profit perspective. Society always tends to ask you what your profit is in something you want to do. Sometimes, there isn’t a profit. And that doesn’t make something I want to do any less important or right. yi

COVERSTORY PET LOVER

For the love of animals

Nilufer Irani has always been an avid animal lover. We get in conversation with her about her bond with her pets, and the change that the country desperately needs with respect to animal laws and welfare

Picture: Nilufer Irani with her beloved dogs

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A LOVER OF ANIMALS? CAN YOU TELL US HOW THIS CAME ABOUT? My earliest memory of loving dogs goes back to the age of 3 or 4. It was of my 2 Irish Setters, Bernard and Busy. It was a cold morning in Delhi. Our dogs were sunning themselves. Bernard, the bigger of the two, got up and came towards me so I could cuddle him. He was a large dog and I was tiny. I was shorter than him and when I hugged him, I used to pull myself up. I must have been very young. Secretly Bernard was my favourite! He had the most beautiful nature. My parents always had dogs and I was brought up with strong values of showing empathy and kindness to all animals. They imbibed in me an understanding that all life on this planet is precious and should be respected. DO YOU BELIEVE ONE HAS TO BE EITHER A CAT PERSON OR A DOG PERSON, OR CAN YOU BE BOTH? Of course one can love both! Love has no boundaries. We can love cats, dogs, horses and many other animals! It's just a matter of preference. I have a nephew who loves frogs. He plays with them and then puts them back where he found them. He shudders to think that the French actually eat his beloved frogs. I have had dogs and cats my whole life. So I am definitely a lover of both DO YOU THINK PETS ARE BETTER THAN HUMANS? There are many good humans. And there are

50 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

some real nasty ones too that create havoc, are cruel and senselessly take life whether it be of another human, animal or our environment. Their vile actions are mostly for profit or for sadistic pleasure. On the other hand, animals show unconditional love to their owners. You are their world and family/pack for their short lives. It’s a pity that the same can't be said for some of their human counterparts who abandon their pets due to some inconvenience. Even animals in the wild don't kill for sport or entertainment or any sociopathic tendencies. The carnivores kill solely to eat and feed their young. Animals don't know malice, hate, greed, jealousy or vindictiveness. So yes, animals have better hearts than human beings. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT WITH YOUR PET? I'm blessed to have quite a few pets. Each one of my dogs has enriched my life with joy and laughter. Each has brought their unique personalities, quirks and all, to brighten my day. One common thing they have all gifted me with is unconditional love. So rare in a human, but so free and natural for our pets. I have had so many wonderful memories with all my pets and animals. My recent most memorable moment was when my rescued Boxer, Leo, who had an aggression problem as he was an abused dog, climbed onto the sofa and put his head on my lap and went to sleep. It showed me that he had probably forgiven humans and laid his trust in me. WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON ANIMAL RIGHTS AND TREATMENT OF PETS? In India we have laws for everything, including animals. However no one follows these laws and no one can implement them. We as a country flout all laws. Animal rights are possibly the last agenda on most people’s list. I have seen rich/literate people neglect

their pets badly. Then when they are too sick or have some issue that takes time to be solved, they abandon them or put them to sleep. We have terrible puppy farms in India. We have laws here, but who will implement them? Most of the police are clueless on Animal Welfare Laws. We have to inform them under what IPC code to note a complaint against an animal abuser/criminal. I have seen people hurt animals with the police standing and doing nothing. I don’t know if it is lack of empathy or pure ignorance; either way it is sad state of affairs. I am a part of an NGO called People for Animals headed by Mrs. Maneka Gandhi. There are plenty of ways to help animals even

if one is not an animal lover of doesn’t have a pet. You only need to have empathy and care for all living beings. If you do, you are a boon for all animals and birds. You can be their voice. If you see someone hurting an animal, you can make sure you stop them or report them. You can get involved in raising money and awareness for animal NGO’s. It just takes a willing mind and a kind heart. You can leave water on your balconies or building compounds for birds in summer when it gets very hot, and leave water in bowls for the local dogs and cats in your area. You can spay and neuter your local dogs or cats. You can help an injured animal in need by calling the help line of many animal organizations or you can take them to the vet. Social media has played a big role in creating an awareness of Animal Welfare in India. I do hope it continues with more people joining in to help and spread this to all corners of the country. With education, change will come. We need to push for this to happen and everyone who speaks about it and shares a post is helping in their own small way. I am sure if this happens, there will be a big change in India and Animal Welfare laws will be followed. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” PLEASE SHARE YOUR MOST SATISFYING EXPERIENCE HELPING AN ANIMAL. There are too many to list here. Last year a few friends who are animals lovers and I formed a group called Animal Adoption Crusaders. Animal Adoption Crusaders are committed to the adoption of homeless animals. We organized an adoption event last year in South Mumbai which was very successful. We had 30 puppies and cats that got adopted through this event. We had another one a couple of weeks ago which was also quite successful. We raise animal awareness and help raise funds for other animal NGOs to aid them in the process of fostering, adoption and any other help that they need. We raise money for feeding programs for animals as well as neutering and spaying. We have lots of cats and pups and adult dogs that have been abandoned and are now up for adoption. You can find more information about us from our Facebook page. There is so much satisfaction from just being around animals and helping them in all ways possible with love and care and time. yi

Mildred Castelino recounts decades of love and bonding with her friends Judy, Doreen, Nancy and Faye, portraying how some of the best things in life are the people you spend it with

TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT HOW YOU MET. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN FRIENDS FOR? We stepped out of the portals of our school in Bandra way back in 1966 and went out into the wide world to seek our fortunes. The majority of us of course, set forth to pursue our education and subsequent careers and quite a few settled into matrimonial bliss. We lost track of each other over the ensuing decades. However we re-ignited our schoolgirl bonding in 2004. This year we usher in our golden year - 50 years of our schoolgirl bonding. WHAT PARTICULAR THING/INSTANCE WOULD YOU SAY YOU’LL HAVE BONDED OVER? A few of the group found themselves unable to dispel a distinct feeling of nostalgia for our school days, the plethora of memories of our carefree school days always seem to tug at our heartstrings. The grim realization that death had robbed us of our classmates, the inevitable and inexorable trudge into middle age with old age hovering in the not too distant future. What really helped us to bond together, with the initial efforts of a few stalwarts to locate our batch mates and then everyone got caught up in the exciting frenzy of locating one another in real earnest. At around this time one of our classmates lay dying of cancer and we rallied around her in little ways. One of them being penning down hilarious anecdotes of our school days for her to read and laugh over. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO TOGETHER? The grand coming together of the local girls and some of the diaspora after 40 years in 2006. The pure undiluted joy in having found each other reigned supreme on that day. Our reunion thus became an endearing and enduring tale of love and friendship which we have

managed to sustain. Meeting together over a cup of tea has Develop your inherent now become a firm tradition strengths but think and is hardly ever missed. We are in the process of planning beyond the lure of a memorable Golden Jubilee money, career and Reunion sometime this year. fame. Remember to HAVE YOU HAD ANY INSTANCES THAT HAVE sustain a firm grip on THREATENED YOUR reality and honesty. FRIENDSHIP? WHAT WERE Keep in mind that love THEY? and friendship are very Not really. If there is one factor that threatens our important ingredients friendship is the fact that in life. It starts with baring the local residents, it your family, friends and is hardly possible to keep in touch with our overseas batch society at large. mates on a regular basis. However, we make that extra effort to meet up when they visit from time to time. TODAY, WE HEAR OF SO MANY FRIENDSHIPS WITHERING AWAY WITH TIME. HOW DID YOU’LL MANAGE TO KEEP YOUR BOND ALIVE? By meeting from time to time, sitting together reminiscing about the good ole days when we actually got slapped for misdemeanors in the class. Taking selfies and the usual round of hugs with renewed promises to stay in touch. All this helps to keep the group together somewhat and of course being there for each other in good times or bad. DID YOU EVER HAVE ANY INSTANCES WHERE

YOU FELT COMPETITIVE OR JEALOUS OF EACH OTHER? We are now beyond that age where competitive rivalry or jealousy ruled the roost. If antipathy or ill will does exist in the group, it is usually consigned to the back seat in the larger interest of putting aside our domestic chores aside and reveling in each others company. PEOPLE CHANGE OVER TIME. HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY CHANGES IN YOUR FRIEND’S PERSONALITIES AS THEY GREW UP? HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH IT? Of course changes are inescapable over the decades, but we gleefully take it in our stride. We are a diverse group of women. We have had many professionals in our midst not to mention two nuns, all which only serve to accentuate our delightful divergence. WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS TOGETHER? Our first ever reunion in December 2006. It was amazing how in just 2 hours we transcended a whole lifetime. It was an evening of dancing in gay abandon to music in quick tempo, bouts of helpless giggling and a veritable overflow of bon-homie. We were on an euphoric high. The takeaway from this memorable evening was the firm resolve to be in touch in the remaining years of our lives. AFTER HAVING KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR ALL OF THESE YEARS, YOU MUST KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT EACH OTHER. SO WHAT DO YOU TALK ABOUT NOW? Our families, our children and grandchildren. We moan and groan over the trials and tribulations of running a household, rising prices of onions and pulses. We also dabble in political chitchat. Of course we wouldn’t be women if we did not relish some random piece of juicy gossip. But the air of camaraderie is never absent. You can label us re-cycled teenagers at best. YOU’VE BEEN TOGETHER THROUGH ALL OF IT; BOYFRIENDS, CRUSHES, MARRIAGE, KIDS, EVEN GRANDCHILDREN. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO GIVE TO THE YOUTH ABOUT FRIENDSHIP? Develop your inherent strengths but think beyond the lure of money, career and fame. Remember to sustain a firm grip on reality and honesty. Keep in mind that love and friendship are very important ingredients in life. It starts with your family, friends and society at large. yi

COVERSTORY LOVERS

What they say is true – love conquers all. Sameer Samudra talks about his marriage with Amit Gokhale and how it takes a little courage to get where you want to be

Above and Below: Sameer Samudra and Amit Gokhale

WHEN YOU’LL FIRST MET, DID YOU THINK YOU’LL WOULD GET THIS FAR? Amit and I met through the online ‘gaybombay’ mailing list. He was a student in Cleveland and I had recently finished my Masters in Engineering and was working in Columbus, Indiana. We started off as good friends and there was no talk about being in a relationship or dating each other. At that time Amit was very much in the closet and he did not have the courage to come to terms with his sexuality. He felt that he would need to marry a girl because of societal and family pressure. I was looking for a boyfriend at that time, so since our goals in life were completely different at that point in time we started off as just friends. At that time if someone would have told us that we would be together I would have laughed it off. But without realizing it, we fell in love with each other in the first couple of months itself and the rest as they say, is history. WHAT WOULD BE ONE QUALITY THAT YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT YOUR SIGNIFICANT

54 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

OTHER, IF YOU COULD? I don't know if we can change anything about another person, but a quality that I always feel Amit can improve on is his worrying nature. He is a worrier and he needs to chill. I keep telling him that life is not as complicated and tough as we think. But worrying about things is just his nature. And I know that has impacted his health and mental well being at times. So, I guess if I could I would try to change this nature of his. WHICH OF THE TWO OF YOU WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MORE POSSESSIVE ONE? Not sure if we are possessive now, but I know in the initial days of dating I was very possessive about him and our relationship. I think with age and maturity we have grown in the relationship and built that bond of trust. HOW DO YOU SEGREGATE BETWEEN YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE? DOES ONE GET IN THE WAY OF THE OTHER? We work for same company, so at times it is hard to not talk about work at home. But we do try to maintain our home life separate from our work life. I love cooking, so I spend a lot of time at home doing that. He enjoys following American politics and related news, so he is usually doing that once home. We prefer to spend quality time together talking about social issues happening around the world or achievements of individuals from different walks of life. These conversations with each other help us explore life together and exchange our thoughts on different topics. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR DIFFERENCES IN OPINION? We agree to disagree on some topics and on other topics we try to find golden mean. For example, I am an activist at heart. I believe in social justice and speaking up against injustice and cruelty in society. I am a person who will

Trust and communication are biggies for me. Also the desire to make a relationship work is very important. People often don't realize but relationships need work. You have to nurture the relationship, you have to take care of the relationship and it takes energy and time to do that.

participate in marches or speak up at town halls and write letters to senators. Amit on the other hand is not much into social activism. Initially it upset me because for me, life has no meaning without social activism. But now, we both have agreed to come to common ground on topics like this. He will participate in his own way in social activism and I don't push him to do things that he doesn't want to. He has made me a calmer person and I had initiated some level of an activist in him. I think that's what relationships do to you; it stretches you to get into these uncomfortable territories. WHAT HAS BEEN THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’LL HAVE EVER DONE TOGETHER? Marrying each other in an extremely conservative state and city I guess. Initially we were not sure if having an Indian gay wedding in Columbus, Indiana is that great an idea. But then we realized we both work and live here. We have met here for the first time, so why not. Other than that, I think the second craziest thing we did together was kissing each other in front of a homophobic group of protestors in the New York City Gay Pride. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE SOCIAL STIGMA

ASSOCIATED WITH BEING A GAY COUPLE? Over the years I have learnt to only pay attention to people that matter to us and our relationship. I used to react to every negative response or person, but then I realized it’s not my problem that they have an issue with us and our relationship. Amit and I live an honest and successful life. We work hard, we pay taxes, we love our nephews dearly, we take excellent care of our parents, we go on nice vacations, we participate in social activities for the betterment of the underprivileged and we are unapologetic about the way we are and the way we live. For me, that has worked best to deal with social stigma - living an open and honest life. Over the years I have seen people change their perception of gay people when they see our lives which is just same as anyone else's. Also, living in America gave us the courage and confidence to be who we are. Unfortunately there is still a big taboo and social stigma about gay people within our own Indian American community. Hopefully with time that will change. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE SECRET TO A HAPPY RELATIONSHIP? Trust and communication are biggies for me. Also the desire to make a relationship work is very important. People often don't realize but relationships need work. You have to nurture the relationship, you have to take care of the relationship and it takes energy and time to do that. Both the parties need to have the desire to make it work. Amit and I have been together for 13 years now and one thing we realized is all the work that it takes to build and nurture the relationship is really worth it. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TELL SOMEONE WHO IS IN LOVE WITH A CLOSET HOMOSEXUAL? Being in love is a great feeling however being in the closet can be suffocating. I know it takes courage and time to come out of the closet. However if you want your love to be respected and appreciated, there is only one way to do it, by being out and proud. I spent lot of my shaping up years being in the closet and worrying about things but now when I am open and out about who I am, it feels extremely liberating. Being myself has opened up a completely new world for me which I would not have experienced if I was in the closet. Trust yourself, value your love and feelings and come out. There is a lot of support and help available for people once they come out. yi

Relationships

High School Sweethearts “We fell in love, and paved our way Skeptical eyes often led us astray People fed on our weaknesses but we stayed strong Not thinking with our brains, but instead our hearts” - Ruhi Gandhi

W

e all know that relationships very rarely last, especially if they start in high school. That is the truth which is what makes the concept of high school sweethearts so enticing and rare. Let me be honest, I actually went around for a couple days in search of someone who could tell me how they managed their relationship with their high school sweethearts, and yes, I was genuinely surprised at the response I got. High school sweethearts are practically unheard of today. Practicality of the Situation Let’s be a little pessimistic for a second and acknowledge the issues, or some of them to say the least. Often these relationships tend to not work out for the most obvious reasons. People in high school tend to move apart, face struggles with distance considering they move off to universities which are possibly in different states or countries; they tend to meet new people which gives rise to jealousy, insecurities, and so on so forth. Of course people also argue that distance should never be the reason for a relationship to end, but that is where practicality comes in. Practically, we all tend to need

56 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

the physical presence of our loved ones; we want the affection, and the interaction. What happens is that people grow apart for this simple and basic reason, change in life visions and personal goals. People, naturally as they grow older, tend to start looking at things in a long term perspective, matching everything up to their life and where they ultimately want to see themselves and hence this very directly relates to where they want to see their respective partners. Today we tend to look for immediate gratification and it seems we have also succumbed to short term visions. Now Put That Negative Aspect Aside Occasionally, this works out. It can be said that today’s generation is highly unlikely to see themselves in these situations as frequently as maybe their parents' or grandparents' generations, but it still isn’t impossible, I guess. Ending up with your high school sweetheart might actually be one of the best decisions you could end up making. Think about it, you both have obviously spent your essential years with one another, you mature together, and in this process you probably happen to

mold yourselves to one another, so there is a comfort level. You naturally happen to know more about each other than anyone else, you probably have a lot of mutual friends, and an abundance of memories to share with one another. The fact that you are labeled as “high school sweethearts” means that you probably overcame the biggest struggle of any relationship, distance, and yes you obviously understood that people can change, but you accepted it with grace. You hardly have to spend time anymore understanding each other’s likes and dislikes and you already knows the small things about each other that either set both of you off or console you. You both have one goal, to stay focused on where you want to be and making sure a part of that is being together. Opinion on Plausibility Today Given that we live in today, it is important to know what this generation thinks of high school sweethearts because at the end of the day it is these people who would one day maybe end up so themselves. Who better to ask than college students, right? Crystal Gandhi (sophomore, Long Island UniversityC.W. Post) “There aren’t many couples who can make it through high school and college, coming out the other end still going strong and wanting to spend the rest of their lives together. You tend to change so much during high school and college because you are trying to find yourself and who you are. This can be hard when you are with someone who wants things to stay the same. I think only strong couples who are willing to go through the arguments and hurt that causes change and are also able to fight through that to reach the other side make it. You don’t really hear a lot of people making it, but when you do, you feel instantly motivated only because you know how hard it can get. High school sweethearts are what people see as goals today; the type of goals that are hard to achieve. My best friend and her boyfriend have been dating since tenth grade; they hardly fight, and have mature ways of handling their arguments. The problem they are currently facing is the distance between them. They both are studying and working, this makes it hard for them but whenever they do find time they dedicate it to one another and that is where it all starts.” Victoria Boccella (freshman, Long Island UniversityC.W Post) “I think high school sweethearts have a negative stigma attached to them. People always like to say that they won’t last or that it’s so rare that they actually happen. I think the whole idea of them is cute. If you can find someone at a young age to love for that long, it’s actually pretty amazing in my opinion. Why wouldn’t you want to spend as much time as you can with the person you love?” yi

BIZARRE VALENTINE’S

Jack Valentine on its sleigh Valentine’s Day in England is celebrated like everywhere else. Couples exchange chocolates, flowers and love tokens but people in Norfolk gave a twist to this occasion by coming up with the ‘Jack Valentine’ tradition, also known as Old Father Valentine or Old Mother Valentine. The tradition is similar to Santa Claus on Christmas. Parents and loved ones sneak into the children’s rooms and leave small gifts and treats for them. Couples also do the same for their lovers.

Everybody gets chocolates! On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, the Japanese believe that nobody shouldfeel left-out; so everybody gets chocolates. Also in Japan, it’s women who give chocolates to men, and the type of chocolate signifies the relationship. HonmeiChoco are special chocolates prepared for lovers, boyfriends and spouses. Giri- choco or obligation chocolates are given to bosses, close colleagues and loved ones.

While brainstorming ideas to make this February the 14th different for your Special Someone,MinalSancheti takes a glimpse at some weird Valentine’s Day traditions across the globe that’ll make you go from ‘aww!’ to ‘whaaat! Red hearts, lovey dovey cards, goodies and candies flashed at every nook and corner on the Valantine’s day. It’s a common trend to exchange gifts and chocolates with our partners. Couples spend the day going to fancy restaurants or long walks on the beach. There are even Valentine’s Day themed lounges and clubs. In several countries, corporates give holidays on the day. The global cutoms of Valentine's Day are very unique that some of them will definitely make you chuckle

Count your roses For a Chinese man to show his love, the most important thing that counts is the number of roses he presents to his lover on Valentine’s Day. If it’s one rose then it indicates ‘my only love’, if it’s eleven it says ‘you are my favorite’, 99 is for ‘promising you an everlasting love’ and 108 roses is when men want to propose their lovers to marry them. So if you are in China, the number of roses you give your girlfriend on Valentine’s Day can say a lot.

Guess the name? Denmark and Norway both have quirky but sweet ways of celebrating Valentine’s Day. In this tradition, a man sends his woman a ‘Gaekkebrev’ or funny little romantic poems or rhymes in an anonymous love note. If the woman guesses her secret admirer correctly, she wins an Easter egg on the Easter Day but if she loses, she owes an Easter egg to the admirer.

Drawing for love France is one of the most iconic places to celebrate love and romance. Strangely it also has one of the weirdest Valentine’s Day practices ever. ’The tradition is called ‘un Loterie d’amour’ or ‘drawing for love’. Single men and women of different ages gather in houses facing each other and take turns to call the opposite sex from the window till they find their pair. If a man is not satisfied with the woman, they leave her for the other men.

‘Lupercalia’ Along with exchanging gifts, flowers and chocolates with their lovers, women in South Africa also put their hearts on their shirts. They pin up names of their lovers on the sleeves of the shirts. This is an ancient Roman tradition known as ‘Lupercalia’, which also refers to the Roman Festival of fertility that is celebrated a day after Valentine’s Day.

Forever-alone day Like the Japanese, South Korean women perk their lovers with chocolates. In return, one month after Valentine’s Day, which is on 14th March, men give them presents; this day is also called as White Day. But what makes this custom interesting or rather humorous is that if a person doesn’t receive any gifts or treats, he or she goes to a restaurant and orders ‘black noodles’. This happens exactly a month after the White Day, which is14th April.

Saint of springs St. Valentine is known as saint of springs and as the Slovenian proverb goes ‘St. Valentine brings the key of roots’. The 14th of February is considered to be the first working day in the fields. It’s also an auspicious day for farmers to resume to their vineyards and fields. There’s a popular belief that on this day birds in the fields propose and marry thier lovers. To see the love birds, one must go bare feet through fields or sometimes even through still-frozen grounds.

Have a sweet dream It’s said that during the 18th century in Great Britain, on the occasion of Valentine’s Day, spinsters would sprinkle rose water on five bay leaves and place each leaf at each corner of the pillow and one in the center. Before going to bed they would then eat a hardboiled egg with salt and sing prayers to Saint Valentine. It was a belief that this ritual would bring dreams of their future husband. However, people in Great Britain no more follow this tradition.

Love spoons On Valentine’s Day, Welsh men gift their women decorative carved wooden spoons. The age-old custom is said to have started in the 17th century. They present beautifully carved wooden spoons to the ladies they wish to marry. Welsh also celebrate St.Dwynwen’s Day on January 25th which is similar to Valentine’s Day. Saint Dwynwen is also known as the patron saint of lovers, so like Valentine’s Day, people celebrate this day with their partners and loved ones.

POINT OF VIEW

Manners Maketh Man Good manners will never run out of fashion. Nisha JamVwal talks about how courtesy and etiquette is the need of the hour

I

want to start this article by asking you a question, “Are good manners passé or a thing of the past and considered uncool?” It is however my belief that people who have an inflated attitude, ride roughshod on friends, are off-hand, do not return calls or pick up calls, behave in a manner which they believe is 'superior' and 'cool' are people with a glaring lack of

64 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

self-esteem. There’s no point wearing McQueen or Louboutin when basic etiquette, warmth and goodness is lacking. To watch your P's and Q's actually makes you a superior and not an inferior person. I've always found high self-esteem people more assured in their good behaviour and unsuccessful people brash and impolite. To denigrate and show down a friend, to be discourteous

or believe one appears popular by ignoring calls and not acknowledging messages is cavalier. That sense of entitlement to be offhand is not a statement of strength but of weakness. You’re sitting with a friend and furiously Whatsapping some of your groups. Why would you then be with the friend in the first place? Why not just stay at home and be on WhatsApp. It is extremely bad etiquette to sit at a table and use your phone. Next time you go out to a restaurant, observe and you will see that many people don’t converse with their companions but are on the phone furiously typing away and smiling into the phone. Such people are big bores and friends begin to surreptitiously avoid them and make excuses for not meeting them. The smarter thing is to disengage from this addictive habit of continuous phone stimulation and learn to enjoy some gap time having a human to human conversation. Bad enough is the phone fever of the yacka-minute vacuous bimbette, now you have incestuous groups passing around alarmist misinformation about death and devastation engaging monumental time and energy which could be spent rehabilitating actual storm and abject poverty victims. Phew! Today’s people are more stimulated with the beep and buzz of a phone than a real life conversation and companionship. It’s a message you’re relaying to your friend, that they are less important to you than your conversation on the phone with someone else who engages your attention at that time. Etiquette and niceties are becoming obsolete in the face of being ‘a dude’. Do you remember the scene from ‘The Intern’ when the unflappable Robert De Niro advises his junior to wear a tucked in shirt as opposed to a hoodie on a date? Unkempt hair, a dishevelled appearance, open overused shoes and a general appearance of nonchalance and contrived unconcern about ones look is also the new age ‘cool’ thing to do. You come dressed in well ironed clothes that give you a professional neat look and you’re generally considered a ‘nerd’, ‘square’ and uptight. And yet if you go for a job or want success in your chosen career it is important to recognise earlier than later in life that you have to look and feel like a performance oriented, ‘with-it’ professional. It is important to look the part and play the part of a well-groomed, oriented professional. An interesting piece of information I got on vacation at my favourite holiday destination Switzerland, is that in the formative years there is greater stress upon good conduct than pumping kids with information overdose. Children who go into school are taught good manners, standing in a que, P’s and Q’s and etiquette early in their education. Schools and teachers give as much priority to good behaviour as to information and knowledge so that time is set aside to teach them about the importance of good manners and proper social conduct. Parents of

l a w V m a J a h Ni s Swiss kids are asked to support schools in instilling of value systems and social behaviour into children even before bookish knowledge is meted out. The same atmosphere is maintained at home where restraint and good behaviour is taught and kids are steered toward the right path so that it becomes second nature. Whatever happened to excuse me in our generation? I find ladies with big handbags in the supermarket just bumping into me all the time and never a word of remorse. And yes only in India do I see people blustering in front of a group posing for a picture. Everywhere else in the world (and I’ve travelled extensively) I’ve seen people wait politely when they see a photograph being taken. There is an informality that has crept into society, and I’m not objecting to that, it might even be more relaxing and chilled out overall in a high-pressure performance oriented existence, but what is bad form is impoliteness and brashness. It is easy to recognise that if you make demands than requests you will find that you are not very loved or coveted. It doesn’t hurt or cost to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, in fact you’ll find yourself to be more popular. And if you use the ‘F’ word a little less and dress in well ironed, washed clothes and comb your hair you might find yourself a good job too. The interesting thing is the better your manners, the more respect you command, and so the viral effect of good attracts good works. On the other hand inappropriate behaviour puts you at a disadvantage in your career, personal life and even your friendships. So what is this if not an all around win-win situation to work at being cultured, civilized and gracious? yi

Fashion

Accessories You could add some fun and statement accessory pieces, for example a fun brooch which adds character to a solid color outfit. This is also versatile and can be worn with a dress or a top.

Palazzos My favorite silhouette, you can dress this up or down depending on where you are heading after college and spend the long hours in class in comfort. Wear with a tee back to dress it down and with a stylish structured crop to add some glam.

Quirky prints Wear a quirky print to college and stand out in the crowd. This is a great way of expressing your individuality. Easy dresses in print or shirts are a great way of incorporating print, you can even try print on print if you want to make your look more dressy.

State Your Style Grown tired of staring at a full wardrobe and still wondering what to wear in the morning? Nisha Sainani gives us her take on how to make a style statement by using what you have Kurtas So comfortable and wearable and yet you can style your kurtas in different ways. Don’t forget the ethnic element in your wardrobe, a particular favorite of mine are the kurtas with a modern twist.

Keep it simple Add classic clean dresses to your wardrobe which you can play with and accessorize in different ways. A black shirt dress can take you easily from that presentation in class to a night out at the local bar.

Beauty Rainbow Turn up the drama in your hair game and wear it off in style! If you think only celebrities can pull off this look, think again. If you’re a colour freak and funk lover, the hair colour for you is Le Rainbow. Originating in U.S and having travelled through Europe, this trend showed up in India as well. Make your hair eye catching and turn heads wherever you go.

It’s a

Mermaid Opal We would totally call this one “candy colour confetti”. It is for the girls who like to be edgy, but the look also has certain regal-ness to it. One can own their look thoroughly by just pulling this trend off. This trend is a mixture of fun and natural hues for every skin tone to enjoy. These colours are more saturated and that’s what makes it so pretty.

Hair Story Ombre The Ombre hair style isn’t showing any signs of disappearing since it originated last year. With its new incarnations constantly evolving, from free painting balayage to extremely simple ‘sombre’, there’s never been a better time to get involved. Classic ombre hues still seem to be big hit among celebrities and commoners as well. There’s no denying the fact that this trend is here to stay and can be pulled off by almost everyone giving your outfit a classy and fabulous finish.

Oil Slick Rainbow hair and mermaid opal are pretty, sure. But they’re like a slap in the face for brunettes. Thankfully, there’s now a trend that’s just for brunettes. It’s also knows as petrol hair and is all about layering shades of blue, purple, and green and works perfectly on dark hair. The end result of it is super pretty, but has more of a dark, edgier feel than the pastel tone. 68 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016

The last year has been a year of change in colours and trends that kept getting better. Which were the passing trends and which were permanently here to make a mark on the world? Fatema Kathawala has compiled a list of trends that are taking hair fashion to a whole new level Sunset Take a minute to bask in the beauty of it, because damn, it’s beautiful. People are painting the colours of the sunset into their hair and the results are so pretty, it hurts. Some people keep it relatively subtle while other’s go all in with the hair dye. It looks mesmerizing on short hair while on long hair it will definitely make you feel things. However you choose to do this trend, wear it well. Because just a head’s up, people will ask to take a picture of your hair. Now go paint with all the colours of the wind.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER The story focuses on Ted Mosby who recounts his adventures with his friends Lily, Marshall, Barney and Robin to his two kids and how he eventually meets their mother and all the funny and epic things he did all those years. This show makes one believe that life shouldn’t be taken too seriously and having friends by your side makes life worth it. It portrays that sometimes waiting for the right person to come along is the right thing to do, and in the mean while, life is full of surprises.

TRANSPARENT

MODERN FAMILY

Three modern-day families from California try to deal with their kids, their quirky spouses and their jobs in their own unique ways, often resulting in crazy capers. The sense of humour depicted in this show is out of the world. The characters played and depicted make us see family life in a deeper way and make us realize how important a role family plays in one’s life. It’s like a breath of fresh air in the comedy genre. The entire cast is likeable and the script is superb. If you haven't watched this yet, then you are missing out on quite a lot.

Mort has a secret that he really wants to tell his three adult children, who are so self-absorbed they don't see that something has changed for their divorced, girlfriendless dad. This LA family with serious boundary issues have their past and future unravel when dramatic and new admissions cause a lot of secrets to spill out and a lot of skeletons come out of the closet, metaphorically.

LOUIE

Louis C. K. has to adjust to his life as a stand-up comedian, after he divorces his wife and is shouldered with the responsibility to raise his two daughters in New York City. It’s a thrilling and weird and funny foray into the brain of Louis and a comedy that’s impossible to pigeonhole or predict or even label as a comedy. Louie will never be a massappeal hit, nor would the show likely be such a critical darling if it were. Yet given the mix of laughs and sheer weirdness the comic delivers, his misery really is deserving of company.

YOU’RE THE WORST

‘You're the Worst’ isn't a typical romantic comedy. Narcissist Jimmy Shive overly thinks all relationships are doomed from the start, while stubborn cynic Gretchen Cutler is certain that amorous bonds aren't her thing. Geere stands out as an actor in the show with his charm and cynical remarks, and is truly hilarious to watch.

second year computer science engineering student who aspires to become a full time musician soon, a third year mechanical engineering student who is not only hard-working at college but in the band as well, a full time musician who knew what his calling was as soon as he got done with his 12th grade boards and a second year mass media student who is film maker by the day and a musician by the night come together to make music. Ferry Tales is comprised of four individuals from Navi Mumbai with a common calling for rhythms and beats. Nischal Chaubey is the lead guitarist of the band and has a unique approach towards the kind of music they play. He leads the progressive side of the band, tapping his way through the delay and reverberation of life. Akshay Dakhane has a John Mayer kind of a song writing approach in which he adds his own flavor. He's the front

man who takes on Rhythm guitars and vocals. Complex chords, groovy ideas and mad compositions are his cup of coffee. Siddhant Vetekar is the bassist of the band who recently upgraded his 6 stringer bass to a fretless one. He plays a major role in the sound and arrangements of the tracks. Groove is his middle name. Nilay Singh is the time keeper of the band who later hopes to add a pinch of his beat-boxing skills to the compositions. He literally plays the drum-kit and makes sounds out of any part of the kit. How did the four of you come together to work and create music? We started jamming a bit after Nischal and Siddhant's board papers. After sitting it out at home and making riffs and chord progressions, Nischal and Akshay had some pretty interesting ideas and after getting Nilay and Siddhant on board, we've never looked back. It didn’t intend to

be a band at the start, but after a few jam sessions there was no doubt that we were going ahead. What was the reason behind choosing the name ‘Ferry Tales’ for your band? We initially thought we'd keep a chiller name because we weren't that serious about ourselves but as our music grew onto us we couldn't help understanding the fact that we love our music to the core and why not look deep within ourselves. Hence, we thought of Ferry Tales, punintended though since we're a band from Navi Mumbai and fairy tales. What can we look forward to from you in the near future? We'll be releasing our EP titled 'There She Goes' after the song this January. We are coming up with new material and intend to go around and do more shows. We're planning to release some good quality live videos as well.

CAFÉ HAQQ SE

THE CAPTAIN’S TABLE

CUISINE: North Indian, South Indian BITES AND BOOZE: Cafe Haqq Se believes in sticking to their roots and bringing back the almost extinct ancient Indian taste. We started with the mocktail Kairi Mary, a blend of Aam Panna and spices with a dash of Tabasco, with a Jaljeera-coated rim. The chilly-rubbed rim on the cocktail Firangi Narangi, a whiskey based drink infused with orange with hints of ginger hit the tongue with just the right amount of spice. For the appetisers, the Lacy Gul Kebab and the Bhuney Chicken Wings are a big hit. The place serves some great appetizers to please the vegetarian palate as well, Samudri Methi Ke Karare Bitoks being our favorite. For the mains, the Crab Mango Quorma and Wild Mushroom Kerala Fricassee along with Pan'Naan is an absolute delight. The authentic flavor of the curry made us nostalgic. We concluded the main course with Smoked Daal which was heavenly and Fragrant Ghee Bhaat which had a warm fragrance that increased our craving for it. Our scrumptious dining experience ended with a delightful Rossogolla White Mousse and Pista Jaam Pie. FAB OR DRAB: When we entered the Café the first thing that caught our glimpse was the ‘Make in India’ symbol. The walls are full of beautiful artifacts and graffiti, each of them depicting India. Lovely Indian classical music and soft Bollywood music adds to the amazing dining experience. The Café also has unplugged music shows on the weekends which are an ebsolute must-visit. CUISINE: Sea Food BITES AND BOOZE: Usher yourself into one of the most fine dining experiences of your lifetime. With its classy and imperial ambience, this place can be labelled as ‘Love at first sight’. The slow relaxing music in the background added to the geniality and good sheer of the restaurant. Our dining experience began with some savoury potato artichoke and Sea food stew soup. Ensuing it, we were apportioned with well-seasoned and toothsome platter of starters which embodied Butterfly prawns, kebabs and really appetizing flavours which are a never seen before novelty. The salads that were served apace with these made us want more of that flair. The main course consisted of a tray of scoops of squids and ravioli’s along with chicken breast and the most exquisite mixture of palatableness. The cocktails made us go gaga. The most awaited dish, deserts of course, was dainty, pleasing and errorless being served as a medley of carrot cake, chocolate and peanut butter truffles and Gianduja Mousse. FAB OR DRAB: A typical sea food restaurant over and above the classiest fine dining experience for a foodie. An amalgam of wanting more and being content to the brim by the end of your meal, this restaurant makes you go bats for sea food. An absolute must visit for all sea food lovers, and don’t miss out on the pretty counter erect, it’ll give you an aura of being aboard. Alan Rickman’s death Alan Rickman a.k.a Professor Snape of our beloved school of witchcraft and wizardry, Hogwarts, passed away on the 15th January at the age of 69. He will definitely be missed, not only for his role in the Harry potter series but for all the different and wonderful roles he has played despite having started his film career at 41. He has taught the youth the meaning of the term ‘always’ in all senses. He has been a malicious, slithering and petty professor on the surface, but deep down driven by good.

Odd-Even car rule in Delhi The policy dictates that car registration numbers ending with an odd digit can ply on odd-numbered dates while those ending with an even digit will be allowed on an evennumbered date. The pilot initiative, which is being tested to cut down on polluting vehicular emissions in the city’s air, will not exclude the Delhi government and its officials, including the chief minister. Those who will be exempted from this rule are women drivers, CNG and electric cars, two wheelers, emergency services and people with disabilities.
