note Be the change you wish to see in the world.
Gandhi’s words will remain evergreen, whether in the midst of a skirmish against the British or in a battle against the attitudes of our society. Like everyone else, when the news of rape in the capital broke out, I was outraged. In 21st-century India, I find it deplorable that women are still treated like this! All one hears about these days is children being molested, money scams and scandals. Even pets are not spared when just last week a friend’s Chihuhaha was abducted right outside her home. Progress is not just about having the highest GDP and the swankiest infrastructure; progress is also – and most importantly – about allowing the people of a land to live freely and comfortably without fear or prejudice. If we truly wish to progress, let us focus on changing the way we think and behave towards our fellow beings. Change is inevitable, not just in our social fabric, but also in our culture and entertainment. Bollywood, which is dominated by older stars, has now opened its doors to young talent. Sidharth Malhotra, one of those fresh faces, whom girls dream of kissing and boys are envious of, took us completely by surprise with his debut film. When we sat down to have a chat with this hunk, we found him down to earth, casual and open about his life. From talking about playing rugby in college to working as an assistant director for My Name is Khan, Sidharth told us all, and we are very pleased to have him feature on our cover this month. Meanwhile in Hollywood, the annual Academy Awards are just a couple of weeks away and we are caught up in Oscar fever. Do you have favourites for the golden statue this year? While you wait for the day to see if you are right, walk down memory lane with us and revisit some favourite Oscar moments from the years gone by to put you in the mood. Speaking of moods, love is in the air this month. Love it or hate it, you can’t escape Valentine’s Day, but you can celebrate it differently. You could play video games the whole day or run off to the palaces of Jaipur with your loved one, but if those are not for you, we have many more suggestions to pep up the 14th. Love, respect & peace!

Around the World Airtel launches mEducation for students
E
ducation seems to be a fairly unexplored sector for mobile phone service providers, particularly in the value added services capacity, which is why Bharati Airtel have tried to tap into the sector extensively. Previously, Airtel, in association with Hungama mobile, had launched a 30-day crash course called CAT Fastrack which was aimed at aiding Common Admission Test (CAT) applicants. They have now followed it up with their recently launched mEducation, a platform that will allow Airtel mobile service customers to avail of educational services on their cell phones for courses in language skills, aids to entrance exam preparations and career counselling for university applications. Airtel users will be able to make use of these educational value added services through Interactive Voice Response (IVR), SMS and WAP. The services have been priced from `1.5 per day to `99 for a course. The list includes such services as English Guru (via IVR) priced at `30 for 30 days, Mock Tests (via WAP) priced at `99 for 12 mock tests or `49 for 5 mock tests and Scholarship Alert (via SMS) which is priced at `1.5 per day.
MODERNISED SEX ďƒŽ EDUCATION, A BMC INITIATIVE
W
ith a view to increasing awareness about sex and sexually transmitted diseases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is adopting a modernised method of sex education by setting up a gallery in its pre-existing sex education museum Antarang in Mumbai. While the main target audience for the initiative is students, people from all age groups will be encouraged to visit and brush up on their knowledge of sex. The primary aim is to instruct students from civic schools where the taboo of sex is not discussed in the family owing to the parents not being educated in in the subject themselves. There will also be more scientific information on ways to prevent diseases, as well as medicines which can be consumed which will help those who are previously educated in the subject to get a more in-depth understanding. The initiative will also educate people to undergo regular check-ups for sexually transmitted infections to keep themselves healthy and to prevent the spread of diseases.

NID CAN NOW OFFER DEGREES
News
T
he National Institute of Design (NID) has been declared to be an ‘Institution of National Importance’ after the Union Cabinet approved the motion by Parliament by law. Providing this status to NID, Ahmedabad, the institute will be authorised to offer students degrees as opposed to only diplomas which is currently the practice. This will also allow the institute to improve the standards of professional design in the country by equating education according to international standards. At the moment, NID offers professional education in undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas with five faculty streams and 17 diverse design domains. The launch of the degree courses will most likely benefit students who wish to pursue postgraduate programmes in professional design.
UGC to pay for sportspersons’ education
Studying in an IIT to get more expensive
G
etting an engineering degree from India’s premier technology institutes is set to get much more expensive with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) announcing an 80% hike in student fees for undergraduate courses. This will take the annual fee up to `90,000 from the current `50,000. Since its last fee hike in 2008-09, when annual fees were doubled from ` 25,000 to `50,000, the IIT Council has appointed the Kakodar Committee to look into developing the physical and intellectual infrastructures of IIT colleges across the country. In November 2011, the Kakodar Committee recommended a fee hike from `50,000 to ` 2 lakh-` 2.5 lakh annually, claiming it would make the IITs financially independent. The IIT Council held a meeting to discuss the proposal and the decision was made to increase the annual fee from the year 2013.
A
spiring sportspersons around the country have new encouragement to pursue their sporting passion as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a new plan to financially aid those who are studying while fighting for laurels on sporting fields. Those eligible to avail the scholarship include medal winners of national games, participants in international sporting events recognized by World University Service, International Olympic Committee and Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA), who have taken admission to different universities and colleges under UGC. As per the central commission, there are two categories under which sportspersons will be given assistance. The first category is for medal winners at Olympics, World Championship, Commonwealth Asian, Afro-Asian Games, Asian Championship and SAF Games who will be reimbursed their entire course fees if they are enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses. The second category includes people who are winners at national level games who will receive 75% of the actual money spent on the course. Similarly, for those pursuing MPhil, MBA or other professional courses and if in the first category, they will be given ` 7,500 per month in addition to reimbursement of the actual fees, and if the second category, will be given `5,000 plus the actual fee amount. UGC will bear complete costs of hostel expenses including boarding and lodging.
AAKASH 2 TABLET TO SEE LAUNCH OF NEW EDUCATION-BASED APPS
F
ollowing its rocky launch, efforts are being made to increase the productivity of the highly affordable Aakash 2 tablet. The Government of India has appointed a fourmember technical committee to supervise the software ecosystem of the tablet. The committee will facilitate the release of applications for the tablet pertaining to the education sector. While the tablet has a small list of applications for games and networking, there is a lack of India and education-centric applications. Reports claim that 25 academic institutions and private companies, including IITs, American Digital University, Mango Learning, TopChalks, Digital BackPack and more, have signed on to design and build education based applications for the tablet. IIT Bombay is working on an application called Proximity which will make lectures of IIT professors available on the tablet; Mango is developing games that will teach students maths; and IIT Madras is conducting a four-day crash course to train 5,000 engineering students to build applications for the tablet. There are talks of creating an App Market to make these apps available, or they will be put up on Google Play Store which is already available on the tablet. FEBRUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 13

TRUST ME, I’M NOT AN The crème-de-la-crème of Indian engineering colleges have shaken off their thoroughly technical coat by offering degrees in more streams. Sean Sequeira gives you a breakdown of the few nonengineering subjects you can study in an IIT
L
ong gone are the days of the IITs being looked at as colleges solely for budding engineers. The Indian Institutes of Technology were started with the primary aim to provide a quality education to engineering students, but with the increasing number of students in the country, the IIT colleges have opened their doors to more departments and have allowed expansion in their campuses. The cream of the crop in Indian engineering colleges now serves up more degrees (and diplomas) in multiple streams and brings together students from more platforms into one large conglomerate. Here are some of the few non-technical subjects that are offered by IIT colleges.

ENGINEER
Now, if you are pursuing a management degree, you need not go to an Indian Institute of Management. You can walk into one of the IITs at Mumbai, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Chennai or Roorkee and pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. These IITs have schools of management and the relevant departments within the campus which offer degrees in the core specialisations of Finance, Marketing, Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology and more. Some of the programmes offered also include options for a student to major in specialised subjects within business like Technology Management and Business Analytics.

One of the more surprising fields to be available at technical colleges is Humanities and Social Sciences. Some colleges have also incorporated subjects from this field into their engineering courses. Courses under this category cover a wide range of subjects which include Human Resource Development, Social Ethics, English and Sanskrit based language subjects, Gender Studies, Film Studies and many more. One of the main reasons I joined IIT Bombay was the fees and scholarships. If I had joined an institute such as National Institute of Design (NID), I would be paying close to `4.5 lakhs as course fees for a two year programme. At IIT Bombay, I am only paying `1.5 lakhs which includes course fees, rent and mess for a 2-year programme. –Abhishek Verma, Animation Design student, Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay

It is possible to acquire an LLB from an IIT college as well. For those who would like to pursue a degree of Bachelor of Law, the programme at IIT Kharagpur is quite a good option. The programme is a six semester, three year full-time residential course in accordance with the Bar Council of India. The degree provided at the end of the course is an LLB with specialisation in Intellectual Property Rights. It is also possible to follow the degree up with a doctorate at IIT Kharagpur itself as they offer a PhD programme in law.
WIKIMEDIA COMMONS USER TOMEQ183
Most of the IIT colleges also offer courses in the field of design. Ranging from Animation and Visual Communications courses to programmes in Product Design and Ergonomics, there are many options for students of design to choose from. The Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is the all-India entrance exam students must take to study design programmes in the IITs at Mumbai, Delhi and Kanpur. The CEED is conducted once a year, in the end of January or beginning of February, by IIT Bombay and after clearing it, there are interviews and other requirements from the individual colleges.
MASTER’S DESIGN PROGRAMMES AT IIT COLLEGES
The IIT PhD programmes cover topics in multiple disciplines, thus it is possible to attain a doctorate from an IIT in a field other than engineering. IIT Gandhinagar, for instance, offers PhDs in Psychology and Sociology, apart from the conventional Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering subjects which are available in engineering colleges. There is also a PhD programme in Liberal Arts which can be completed at IIT Hyderabad, a programme in Management Studies which is available at IIT Delhi and a PhD in Design at IIT Bombay. Admissions to the PhD courses are primarily interview based. yi FEBRUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 15

_SPECIAL FEATURE
Your college experience depends purely on the kind of friends you keep. Vatsala Chhibber introduces you to the different cliques in college to help you make the right friendships
THE BARBIE DOLLS This group is easy to spot with their poker straight hair, branded bags and oversized glares. They generally travel in cars and avoid the sun. Their other interests, apart from air conditioning, include shopping, boys and gossip. They always address each other with affectionate names, even during a fight (sweetie, babe, hun, etc). BEFRIEND THEM IF: You have a platinum credit card – outings will never be cheap. AVOID THEM IF: You have acne or you can spell. They’ll look right past you. 18 Youth Incorporated ║ FEBRUARY 2013

21-01-2013 14:34:31
THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS Students who have left their home towns and come to the city for their education are generally drawn to each other. Their friendship is strengthened by shared issues like rent, food, bills, etc. Since most of them are under no parental guidance, they are free from the constraints of curfews and deadlines. Since they have to manage their money, they usually find cheap but exciting forms of entertainment. BEFRIEND THEM IF: You want access to inexpensive parties and a house to crash at. AVOID THEM IF: You don’t want to risk lending money (they might ask for small loans now and then), can’t stand messy houses and don’t want to get involved in roommate fights.
THE ACTIVISTS No they will NOT eat at McDonalds, they will NOT buy leather, they will NOT waste paper on assignments and they will NOT bathe for days. They comprise the small percentage of youth that know exactly what they want to do with their lives – make a difference one protest at a time. BEFRIEND THEM IF: You are passionate about a cause and have a voice loud enough to shout slogans. AVOID THEM IF: You enjoy eating meat. They will NOT tolerate you.
THE INVISIBLE GROUP This group, much like Halley’s Comet, is an extremely rare sight. You will spot this group only on the following occasions: assignment submissions and examinations (sometimes not even then). The rest of the time this group can be seen at their favourite haunt – which could be a coffee shop or the bus stop near your college. BEFRIEND THEM IF: You ever manage to find them. AVOID THEM IF: You’re scared of being on the blacklist, being asked to call your parents or expulsion from college.
THE OVER-ENTHUSIASTIC GROUP
THE TWOSOME
You can recognise this group through their constantly raised hands, jumping movements and voices as animated as characters from Disney movies. There are times when you might wonder if they are human due to their unrealistic energy levels. You will find their name in any volunteer list – for college festivals, social service groups, library monitors, etc. BEFRIEND THEM IF: You can invest in a lifetime supply of Red Bull and can remember more than 800 names and faces. AVOID THEM IF: You like to sleep on weekends.
They spend their college lives oblivious of the people around them. The twosome could consist of a romantic couple or just two ‘buddies’. All activities such as travelling to college, attending lectures, working on assignments (sometimes even visiting the washroom) are performed together. If one of them falls sick, the other avoids college till he/she recovers. BEFRIEND THEM IF: You have no one else to hang out with. AVOID THEM IF: In every circumstance. yi JANUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 19

HONG KONG
E
nclosed by the vast expanse of China and washed by the waters of the South China Sea is the autonomous and special administrative region of Hong Kong. Known as the melting pot of the East and the West and as the land of ample business opportunities, Hong Kong is today being recognised as a world-class higher education destination.
A BRIEF BACKGROUND ÔHong Ô Kong was a colony under the British Empire for over a hundred years, from the mid-1800s to the late 1900s. Therefore, although Cantonese is the local language, English is one of the official languages. ÔHong Ô Kong and China function under the principle of “one country, two systems”. Hong Kong has its own laws, judiciary, government
and immigration policies. This means the country is not bound to China’s communist system. ÔHong Ô Kong is economically healthy and stable. The Hong Kong dollar is the eighth most traded currency in the world. WHAT HONG KONG OFFERS STUDENTS ÔHighly-rated Ô universities that offer internationally recognised degrees in a variety of subjects. For years, Hong Kong mirrored the UK system of education with threeyear undergraduate degrees, but it internationalised the system in 2012, rolling out four-year degrees instead. ÔContrary Ô to popular perceptions, most courses at universities are taught in English. Although, if you do want to learn Cantonese or even Mandarin, that is possible too.
With Asia rising as an economic super power, Hong Kong is emerging as a prime education destination. Aparna Sundaresan introduces you to the region ÔHong Ô Kong is the gateway to China as the mainland is just a train ride away. Some universities allow foreign students to study in Beijing or Shanghai for a year or two. ÔAfter Ô graduating, foreign students are allowed to stay back and work in Hong Kong. The government issues work visas even if the student does not have an offer of employment, provided the student applies within six months of graduating. ÔThe Ô student body is diverse and international. Local students are friendly and hospitable and more than eager to show foreign students around. LIVING IN HONG KONG: THE PROS AND CONS ÔThe Ô standard of living is high, so the quality of amenities is good. Unfortunately, this means housing is exceptionally expensive, but
20 Youth Incorporated ║ FEBRUARY 2013
20 Destination Hong Kong.indd 20

fret not: many of the universities’ student accommodations are cheap and located in prime areas. ÔThe Ô public transport system is excellent. Buses, minibuses, taxis, trains, trams – there are numerous ways to go from one place to another. The train is the fastest way to travel and is cheap. The taxis too
are not very expensive. ÔThere Ô is much to eat and discover in Hong Kong. Cantonese cuisine is easy to come by and sample, what with several restaurants all over the region. Cheap yet quality meals are available aplenty. Vegetarians might be apprehensive about eating out, but there are a surprising number
of vegan restaurants. These are, however, expensive. ÔA Ô lesser known aspect of Hong Kong is that most of its landscape is covered by national parks which offer many outdoor sporting opportunities like cycling, trekking, hiking and rock climbing.
WHERE TO STUDY
Hong Kong has eight government-funded universities that accept international students

How will you make sure Preity Zinta creates headlines once again? I think if Preity Zinta turns a polititcian, she will surely make headlines, as most celebs who take the political path create good ‘breaking news’. Although, she would need to marry Rahul Gandhi and then turn a politician, and that would ensure hoardes of headlines carrying her name.
Ishkq in Paris has definitely killed any chance for Preity Zinta to make headlines anymore. I don’t think there’s much scope left for her in the film industry, so no headlines coming out from there. Putting her foot into any new business venture or further into the IPL can give her a few chances to make headlines.
ROUND 2 What is the most effective way to discourage eve teasing? Tit for tat is definitely not the answer for this one. I think today’s generation is way more responsible and civilized than they are portrayed. One’s upbringing does reflect on one’s values. The right company, not giving in to peer pressure and a sense to distinguish between wrong and right is the main key for discouragement against eve teasing.
Empowering girls is the first step. Instilling self confidence in them does make a huge difference as it prevents one getting subdued. In this day and age, having the knowledge of self-defense techniques like Kickboxing or Martial Arts also helps. Maybe then the next generation will complain of ‘Adam Teasing’.
ROUND 3 If Gandhiji’s principle of nonviolence is timeless, how do you think it can curb terrorism? According to me, nothing is timeless in this day and age. Terrorists neither have brains to think rationally or intellectually, nor a heart to feel humanity or compassion. As the Indian Army has rightly said “let God punish them”, so we too must do our duty and send them to God.
I’ve personally never been a follower of Gandhiji. According to me this principle isn’t enough to curb the nuisance of terrorism. Terrorism is such a huge problem in today’s time that we must tackle it by targeting its cause/roots – which is tackling people taking advantage of other persons’ poverty and religious beliefs.

GIRL ADVICE
Consider this revelation made by UNICEF last year: 57 per cent of Indian teen boys think it’s okay for the husband to beat his wife if the wife burns the food, argues with her husband, goes out without telling him, etc. More appallingly, 53 per cent of Indian adolescent girls say that this behaviour is justified. Like everything else, only the change that comes from within has the power to change things outside.
Don’t be a female enemy
Us women like to gossip about the new girl in the building, or so-and-so who has landed such-and-such job that requires her to work late. And we love jumping to conclusions. The girl
it”, not even the one who wears short skirts.
Don’t be in denial
who invites guy friends over is having multiple dalliances. The girl who wears short skirts is of ‘loose’ character. The conclusion for all is common: today’s woman is shameless and is asking for inappropriate advances from men. Before you point accusatory fingers at Asaram Bapu or the RSS Chief, make sure you are not contributing to the prejudice that exists against women with your views. No woman “asks for
That brings us to the next point – untoward incidents do not happen only to women who “ask for it”; they can happen to all women. Don’t brush away the seriousness of any crime against women by thinking, “It won’t happen to me.” It might. Prepare yourself. Take lessons in self-defence. Invest in a pepper spray. Prep your phone to act as an SOS device (flip to our Technology pages to see how).

Don’t spare the little things
It’s the little acts that snowball into a massive crisis. An eve-teaser on the street might make a lewd comment or touch you improperly, but don’t ignore him. Turn around, face him and give him a piece of your mind. If you let him go, you will only give him more confidence to continue eve-teasing and up his ‘game’.
Kill the shame
If you do become the victim of any kind of verbal, physical or emotional abuse, you must speak out. Hiding such incidents will only make you more of a victim and re-enforce the feeling of power in your violator. We women in this country collectively need to liberate ourselves from the shackles of shame and ‘dishonour’. It is true that society’s views will not change overnight, but we need to be able to point out the ever teasers, molesters or men who commit any sexual offence and say, “He’s the one”. Let the shame be his. Even as future parents, we need to make sure the next generation is given the confidence to speak up against wrong-doers without being judged.
GUY TALK
How often have you noticed men, travelling in trains or buses, walking down the road, standing near junctions, or anywhere at all, notice a woman and stare? Chances are, if you are a guy, you have also noticed a girl and ‘checked her out’. And in our great nation, it goes a few steps further than this when it enters the territory we like to call eve teasing. The problem isn’t as small as leching because it is the attitude towards
women and the manner in which they are treated in our country. This has to change or there will continue to be reports of terrible crimes against women.
The simple stare
Now guys, everyone knows you look. You might see a girl out of the corner of your eye and turn to get a second glance and think there is no big deal in that. But it gets disgusting when you keep staring and make the girl feel uncomfortable. Living under the rouse that you are ‘appreciating beauty’ may just be your justification for being a pervert.
Crude is not cool
You got drunk with your mates last night and had fun abusing a big busted teacher or boss who is giving you hard time? It is well known that guys use crude humour as a form of bonding. Good on you! But every time you make a sexist joke you are helping enforce the attitude that demeans women.
DON’T BE THAT GUY CAMPAIGN
An advertisement campaign run by NGOs, the Edmonton Police Service, and other groups and individuals, the Don’t Be That Guy campaign was created to stop sexual assault by targeting the people responsible – the perpetrators. Some of the taglines used in the campaign were: Just because she isn’t saying no, doesn’t mean she’s saying yes. Just because you help her home, doesn’t mean you get to help yourself. Just because she’s drunk, doesn’t mean she wants to fu*k
Not just your women
Just because you treat your sister, mother or friend well, doesn’t exempt you from treating other women poorly. It isn’t enough to respect the women in your life and look down on other women you don’t know. You should treat every woman well, whether acquaintance or not.
Not a trophy
Another important piece of information for guys to remember is that women are not a trophy. In fact, women should not be objectified in any way. Period. Eve teasing may be one of the extremes but a more common example that practically every guy will be able to relate to is chasing skirts and trying to go out with women as a way of achieving a trophy among their guy friends.
That slu*
A couple of guys are at a party, or in a club, a girl walks by in a really short skirt and it seems to afflict every guy’s attention. What ensues after the staring is usually a discussion about how high her skirt rises and a few tags which may be too perverse to put in print. If a guy can put a tag on a girl without even knowing who she is, there is definitely something wrong with the way society treats women. This can also extend to name calling with girls who you know. We say it’s all fun and games till someone gets hurt, but why wait for that drastic moment to make the difference when you can start being civilised now.
Be proactive
Finally, if you see a women being treated badly or if you see or hear a guy refer to a woman in an impolite way, raise your voice. Don’t shrug your shoulder and move on with life because ignoring the little things makes us insensitive as much as the big ones. yi FEBRUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 25

UPG College of Management, Mumbai Miloni Sheth writes about her college and why she thinks it’s the best place to study SUBURBAN UTOPIA
Vile Parle – popularly known as Parla, the heart of suburban Mumbai – is home to Usha Pravin Gandhi (UPG) College of Management. UPG is part of the famous SVKM trust series of higher education institutes. This trust is also responsible for NM College, another well-known Mumbai college. UPG College was established in the year 2003. It is strategically located right between its sister, NM College, and Mithibai College. It is affiliated to Mumbai University. UPG’s infrastructure is remarkable. Importance is placed on facilities.
Classrooms, washrooms, staff rooms, computer labs and even corridors have been given plenty of attention and care to ensure they have the right ambience to make education a fun and immersive experience. Classrooms are equipped with air conditioners and each class even has its own projector to make lessons and lectures more interesting and interactive.
STUDY OPTIONS
UPG is a fairly new college, but has already come to be recognised as one of the best higher education institutes for the Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) course. Other degree courses offered here, which are just as popular as BMM, are Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), BSc in IT and a twoyear integrated postgraduate course – MSc in IT (part 1).
FOOD, FRIENDS AND FUN
The canteen, fondly called Aditi by us students, is our favourite place to hang out. The canteen is common to three colleges – UPG, NM and Mithibai – which means this place is always full of students and no one is ever bored when they are here. The food at Aditi is wide-reaching because of its allencompassing menu. While the usual South Indian and North Indian items are available, there are also a variety of parathas and a thali for those who like their meals to be elaborate and satisfying. And for those who are tired of regular Indian fare, there are Chinese and Italian items. Stepping out of the campus, there are umpteen places to eat, drink and make merry. The Chocolate Heaven is easily the preferred hang out. All items

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
College life is thoroughly enriched with a host of activities for students of all talents and abilities. We UPGites are particularly proud of our Rotaract Club. Through this club, we perform community service in the form of hands-on field work, and have workshops and seminars for us as well as affluent members of society. The club also provides a global platform via Rotaract International which gives us national as well as international networking and socialising opportunities. Our Rotaract Club was placed fifth among 120 Clubs in the year 2012. The National Service Scheme on campus also focuses on social service with its aim to “inculcate the social welfare thoughts in the students, and to provide service to the society without any prejudice”. UPG also has Women Development Cell to spread awareness of women’s rights and their roles in today’s society. yi FEBRUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 27

Tackling that first job audition is an art. Jasmine Chabria tells you about the tactics you need to fire or hire to bag your first job

he hiring manager isn’t solely hiring your skills and achievements, but a candidate as a complete individual. First impressions, personality, attitude, presentation, responses, questions – all matter. Each factor you display is evaluated by the hiring manager. THE CARLESS CARELESS CV Your CV speaks before your mouth, so ensure that it doesn’t etch the hiring manager’s brows. A professional email ID consisting of <real name><real surname> is digested better than rohit_killerboy@gmail.com. It’s safer to state your skills and interests in the conventional manner like ‘I keep myself updated about current political affairs’ rather than ‘I got the political curioisity thing in me’. Spell check before submission. In the section of hobbies and interests, state activities that would complement the job you’re applying for. For instance, if you’re applying for a journalism job, stating that your’re interested in reading and writing rather than gossiping and chicks. FLUSH… WHEN THE AUDITION CALL ARRIVES The moment you are given a ring to come for an interview is as crucial as the interview itself. Below are some of the confessions of candidates who committed disasters at this crucial moment and got fired before being hired. • “During a phone call, I flushed the toilet while talking to the hiring manager. He instantly told me, ‘Sorry, it’s better you stay there.’” • “I just got out of the shower, and my interviewer called me for an interview in the next 30 minutes. I responded, ‘With my hair soaking wet? I just got out of the shower lol’. I wasn’t hired for the job.” ‘I’M SORRY, I SUFFER FROM MEMORY LOSS! Even if you have submitted a resumé when you applied for the job, you may also be asked to fill out a job application. Make sure you know your information well – previous internships, graduation dates and previous mentors’ contact information. Research the organisation you have applied to. Be aware of their targets and needs. Use LinkedIn and similar tools to find people who worked at the company or who may have interviewed there. Ask them what the interviews there are like.

SMELLY FELLOW, EH? Heavy perfume, body odour, unkept nails, messy hair and gaudy, revealing attire may get you entry into a rock band, but not into that office. Formals are the safest attire. If you aren’t sure of what the employees in a particular organisation dress like, stand below the organisation’s office building for a few minutes a day prior to your interview and gauge what the employees entering/exiting are wearing. The desi mistake committed by most candidates is removing their shoes at an interview, worse still, sporting smelly socks. UMM… YOU’RE NAUGHTY! Umms, ahh and other sounds in the middle of your speech encourage regret in the interview’s mind. Flirting with your interviewer is another outrageous mistake, post which you may find yourself outside the door that just slammed in your face. BLABBER DAY One of the most tormenting things interviewers face is a candidate who can’t stop the blah-blah-blah. The interviewer isn’t there to slyly write your autobiography. Keep your answers to the point and focused. THE MANAGER’S TAKE These are what hiring managers consider the most outrageous mistakes by a first time applicant: 77 per cent cited answering a call or texting during an interview. 75 per cent said appearing uninterested. 51 percent listed dressing inappropriately. 44 per cent cited arrogance on part of candidate. 29 per cent stated not asking good questions.
don’t badmouth, you never know when you will be in need of that boss from heaven/hell. Learn from your mistakes and move on to the next boss from hell/heaven. FUZZY ANSWERS FOR STAPLE QUESTIONS Staple questions are embedded in the blood of the interviewer, even if you don’t like them (or him). Find out what can get you fired or hired. Q: What sets you apart from recent graduates? Way to get fired: Just look at me. I mean, c’mon! I have it all! Way to get hired: Emphasis on the number of accomplishments you have achieved, all before you graduated. Q: What are your strengths? Way to get fired: My voice is sexually persuading. I can get you more deals. Way to get hired: State your qualities, skills and aspects which most people can’t tackle (for instance, I can work in the company of people whose views don’t match mine). Q: What are your weaknesses? Way to get fired: Sweets and sleep. Way to get hired: Honestly mention qualities you lack and state that you’re improving upon them. Q: Do you have any questions? Way to get fired: I really don’t have any/Do you get good food nearby? Way to get hired: Ask about the company’s positioning in the market, their USP. Try presenting a few beneficial/ creative ideas if you have any. yi

e it to genuinely make the environment greener or to be branded as a green firm or to avoid their projects being shut on grounds of being environmentally slack, several Indian companies have set up green departments. These departments strive to preserve the environment while attaining good profits. As a result, the demand for hiring green professionals is on the rise. Whatever be the actual motive of the firm, it’s a win-win situation for all – the green firm, the green professional and Mother Nature.

THE GREENER ESTATE
The field of real estate is going greener by hiring environmental designers, architects, managers and engineers. Developers like Rahejas, the Wadhwa group and Nandlals have incorporated more of green in their projects. Right from using recyclable paper for their brochures to carrying out demolitions in eco-friendly ways (like uprooting trees from their roots and replanting them elsewhere), developers are striving to earn the tag of ‘the green developer’. This tag simplifies the process of acquiring some of the many
permits required to develop new projects. With corporate heavyweights like Wipro, Microsoft, Cognizant and Infosys already operating out of green spaces or planning to in the near future, India will clear 45 million square feet of land for green buildings, the Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) study estimates. “There will be a huge demand for people who can certify green buildings, and architects and project planners who are adept in green building norms” observes Abhishek Kiran Gupta, JLL’s chief of research and intelligence services.
IT’S A HAPPY WORLD
Products like gadgets, batteries, clothes and eatables have to undergo strict environmental screening before they are made available in the market. Aegis, a BPO outsourcing solutions company’s back office has a separate sustainability team called Happy World. Happy World consists of 55 employees who work on green issues. They assess the varied impacts of their products on the environment. They are gathering the ream cover packets of A4-sized papers, which would normally be discarded as waste. These covers are being converted into spiral notepads. Apart from taking several energysaving measures to reduce overall consumption, initiatives have been taken in the areas of air-conditioning, lighting and raw power.
BANK ON E-STATEMENTS
Private as well as nationalised banks have creative teams brainstorming on green measures. The most commendable idea executed was to provide customers with an option of receiving their bank statements in an e-format. Several customers have opted for this option because it involves only a few clicks to access one’s monthly bank statement and saves the trouble of physically going to the branch. This has not only been beneficial for customers and our environment, but also the banks who save their capital and energy resources. FEBRUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 31

THE YOUNG GREEN ACHIEVERS
Tapping the right knowledge of hydrogeology (dealing with the distribution and movement of ground water in the soil) aids companies utilising water resources to cut down on their energy levels massively. Coca Cola India has an environment team led by a general manger. Five people at the company level are dedicated to sustainability. They are one of the few companies to have a hydrogeologist. Each of their bottling plants has its own dedicated resources and as a result, none of the plants overuse any natural resources.
STRUCTURAL GREENNESS
A company’s structure and the operations carried out in any office impact the environment. In India, data centres are striving to go green by emphasising on their structure and daily operations. Wipro, a global IT company, enables eco-sustainability initiatives for customers. They build green data centres (or ecooperationalise existing centres) so that they consume 10 to 20 per cent less energy. Talking of eco-friendly structures, Infosys has the first commercial radiant-cooled building in India. Their Hyderabad building proves that radiant cooling is more efficient than conventional airconditioning.
ROUTES AND RUPEES
Several courses devoted to green technology have been introduced in India, like BSc in Environmental Science, BE in Environmental Engineering, BTech in Environmental Engineering, Carbon Finance Course, MSc in Environmental Science, MTech/ME in Environmental Engineering, ME in Hydraulics and Flood Engineering, Phd and MPhil in Environmental Management and a Phd in Environmental Protection and Management. Many renowned educational institutions like The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) University, Delhi University, Pune University, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai and the Indian Institution of Technology (IIT) offer these courses. A person with an experience of two years can draw a salary of `5 to 7 lakhs per year, the compensation package of a chief sustainable officer can go up to `40 to 50 lakhs a year. It is estimated that the hiring of such professionals would see a phenomenal increase to the tune of 60 per cent. Executive search firm GlobalHunt Director Sunil Goel said that hiring of green professionals began a decade ago, but picked up steam 5 to 6 years ago when many industries faced mandatory regulations to have environment experts and green departments to manage waste and hazard. yi

My Thoughts on NRIs Our intern Pritika Behrawala shares her thoughts on what she calls ‘Non-Reliable Indians’
NRIs are considered one of the most intelligent species globally except in India. Even Obama is intimidated by their brains!
We all have at least a couple of relatives who’ve fled from their motherland and settled abroad. Maybe Karan Johar and Yash Chopra films are responsible for this kind of behaviour. Maybe they did not want to stay in a country where pollution and population have taken a stronghold like the Ambanis and the Bachchans. Whatever be the reason, they have ditched their native country and are fit to be called Non-Reliable Indians!
NRIs should know that We no longer go for puppet shows every weekend and that Mc Donalds, Ferrero Rochers, multiplexes have been here SINCE FOREVER (or at least it feels like that now).
_OPEN SPACE
They earn in dollars now and should stop converting each dollar into rupees. They must also stop bargaining everywhere they go. Every person here is not trying to loot them!
We can’t really blame NRIs, can we? A plush villa, a posh BMW, a good salaried job is definitely more appealing than the deadly local trains, neverending traffic jams and changing weather patterns.
Knowing about Indian culture and religion makes NRIs feel closer to India and no one can match their daily rituals and weekly trips to satsangs. But they should stop boasting about that in front of our grandparents, It leads to a lot of tension and almost results in World War 3! If you have an entertaining mind, we want a piece of it. You could be involved in researching, designing, programming or testing robots, improving the efficiency of existing robots, assisting companies and other users in the use of robots, etc. Currently there are a myriad of fields where robotics is being actively
used such as automobiles, health care, education, military and security, etc. Another upcoming sector is the personal robots industry, i.e. robots used for personal use such as performing daily chores. WHAT DO I STUDY? Robotics is a career specialisation in the field of engineering, therefore, the first step to enter this profession would be to study for a BTech or BE degree (in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics or Computer Science). Since there are limited specialisations available in India at the undergraduate level, you can opt for a post graduate specialisation in robotics. One can

WHERE WILL I WORK? There are firms that deal primarily with robots such as Kuka Robotics, Precision Automation Robotics India Limited, Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, etc. As the field of robotics is vast and diverse, so are the employment opportunities. Currently, the main user of robotics in India is the automobile industry (70 per cent). Tata Motors, Tata Leather, Reliance Industries, etc are just some of the big companies that have a dedicated department for robotics.

Addressing the challenges in the field of robotics, Mr. Amit Bansal, CEO of PurpleLeap says, “As robotics is a multidisciplinary subject, it involves a person to be good at many subjects from various fields of engineering. The person needs to be a good hardware

designer from electronics engineering point of view, he needs to know [the] mechanical design aspects of a robot, he has to be good at programming through which artificial intelligence can be brought inside a robot. Even if all this can be done by having people from the actual domains, knowing the interfaces between electronics, electrical, mechanical and computer engineering is always a challenge.” A WORD OF ADVICE: “It is important for a student to give themselves a start in the field of robotics either through a small workshop or a short term programme and get a feel of engineering,” says Mr. Amit Bansal. “It is very important that the student chooses the right programme at the initial level because if the student does not get the experience of designing something on their own from scratch, they might get disinterested in the field itself. The field of robotics is very interesting and has a lot to offer for young, enthusiastic and creative technical minds,” he adds. yi FEBRUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 35

_CAREER WATCH
RESEARCH TO THE RESCUE
If math, research and logical reasoning interest you, a career in marketing research might appeal you. Pritika Behrawala gives you a gist of this career option What is marketing research?
Have you ever wondered why Nestlé stopped producing their chocolate malt beverage, Milo, in India? What went wrong or why people stopped consuming it? Maybe their marketing research team had got it all wrong. Are you thinking of ways you could fix this? If yes, then marketing research is the perfect career option for you.
Due to increasing competition in global markets, marketing research has become an extremely essential tool for any organisation’s survival. Researchers systematically collect, record and analyse data that is used to identify and solve marketing problems. It includes research in products, consumers, packaging and pricing which help the company make production and marketing policies,
introduce new products, identify new markets and collect information on competitors. The company uses this information to fight competition and reduce the gap between demand and supply.
Types of marketing research
Marketing research can be partitioned into two types, based on the target
36 Youth Incorporated ║ FEBRUARY 2013

market: • Consumer market research is the first type. Its goal is to study the purchasing habits, likes, dislikes and expectations of the target audience. This is done by tallying up how much of a product is sold, through surveys or through other means. The information gathered from consumers can be used to analyse current marketing campaigns and to create new ones. • The second type of marketing research is business to business (B2B) research, which studies how businesses sell products and services to other businesses. It is important to understand how companies find out about other products, how well these products are marketed and how good the market is for that particular product.
How can you get there?
Anyone who has passed their 10+2 level in any discipline is eligible for the undergraduate courses, whereas, for the postgraduate degree and diploma courses, you must have graduated in a relevant field from any recognised institute or university. Bachelor of
range of research methodologies and focuses on learning both in the classroom and on the field. There is a growing preference among recruiters for people with master’s degrees specifically in marketing research.
Personal skills and traits
Marketing research has many layers to it as employees need to have an understanding of the market, the target audience and the competition. Employers look out for certain traits while hiring – an analytical mind, strong knowledge of statistics and computers, excellent communication and written skills, an interest in psychology and behavioural science for qualitative research, excellent people skills and confidence when dealing with a wide variety of people.
Remuneration
If you are looking for a job as a marketing researcher, a well-paid, fat salary is guaranteed in India. Since this category of job often calls for a master’s degree or even a doctorate, pay can be quite good. In the early stage, a marketing researcher can earn between `10,000 and `12,000
A HURDLE ON THE WAY The biggest challenge a market researcher faces is of remaining relevant, staying ahead of the brand game and knowing more about the client’s business than the client himself. Those who do this well thrive in this industry. There is a premium on expertise and the researcher must live up to this. Sridevi Rao, Vice President and Head of Human Resources at IMRB International Business Administration (BBA) at the undergraduate level, Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the postgraduate level and several diploma courses are some paths you can choose to study marketing research. A small number of business schools also offer a more specialised Master of Marketing Research (MMR) degree. An MMR degree typically prepares students for a wide
per month. With two or three year's experience, one can get around Rs. 18,000 - 25,000 per month. Experienced market researchers can earn a lot in this field.
Scope in India
Marketing Research forms the core of any company as it helps identify and solve marketing problems and take major decisions. It is fast
growing in its importance due to increasing competition, fast moving technological developments and changing consumer needs, expectations and attitudes. Even in India, companies are always on the look out for efficient and skilled marketing researchers as a result of which the courses related to this field have gained much popularity in the present day. But, be advised, it's not for the faint-hearted; it is a place for the shrewd, brave and intelligent! yi

• Marketing research and market research are sometimes used interchangeably. However, they are NOT synonyms. • Market research is a subset of marketing research. • Marketing research is the study of place, product, price and promotion to understand the consumer’s behaviour. It covers areas such as research into new products, modes of distribution, product development, pricing and advertising. • Market research is the study of place i.e. a specific market or segment, customer, competition and the industry in general. MBA programmes offer specialisations in many nontechnical disciplines like Marketing, Finance, HR, International Business, Media & Entertainment, Communications, etc. These are not necessarily linked to technical work. MBA programmes also offer sectoral specialisations in Banking, Insurance, Rural Management, etc and they too have no relation to technology in the form that you studied in your engineering degree. Even if you were to work in a technical company after your MBA, the work and the projects you would be handling would not be technical.
For a successful career in journalism you will need excellent writing skills, strong research skills, ability to work independently and creatively, strong news sense and news judgment, well-developed analytical skills, organisation and prioritisation skills, the ability to meet deadlines, quick response to breaking news, good interpersonal skills, accuracy in reporting and attention to detail for checking facts before breaking a story. There are excellent institutions for studying journalism in India. Most of them admit candidates through a written entrance test followed by a personal interview. Some institutes also conduct group discussions. The written test usually has a mix of objective and subjecting questions to assess writing and editing skills, general awareness and reasoning ability. The group discussions test speaking abilities and the candidate’s tact in presenting their views under duress.

If you want to establish yourself in a career in academia, research or consulting, then search for a PhD programme. A few years of related and/or relevant experience would enhance your prospects of getting into a PhD programme. Since PhD applications have to be made to the concerned faculty member of a university who is working or focused on the field of your interest, you would have to search through the departments of education, psychology and guidance and counselling in different universities to identify the faculty member(s) whose academic/ research interests mirror yours. In shortlisting universities, you may focus on the most prominent and well-known universities so that your qualification is most widely accepted afterwards when you seek employment, or you could instead choose to focus completely on the university/professor whose work enthuses you. Search for PG Diploma or MSc/ MA programmes in the field of your interest if you actually want to get a specialised job in that field. While a PhD would take at least three years, MSc or PG Diploma courses would be expected to take one year or at most two years to complete. Your budget and career goals together would determine the decision. Look through http://www.educationuk.org/india and http://www.prospects.ac.uk/search_courses. htm for links that may be used to explore options for postgraduate studies in the UK. PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION IN CANADA Q: I would like to know when and where to pursue professional education in Canada in fields like engineering, medicine, dentistry, etc. How strong is the competition for admission? What would be the right time to start exploring possibilities? Rohan ANSWER ANSWER
FURTHER STUDIES IN PSYCHOLOGY Q:I have a master’s degree in career and developmental psychology. I am interested in further studies in the UK that are focused on learning disabilities, child development and/or testing and assessment. How do I begin my search? Taniya
Engineering, optometry, medicine, veterinary medicine, law, and dentistry are fields where the first professional degree is considered an undergraduate programme in Canada. There is a great deal of academic competition for these spaces and most universities have limits or quotas on the number of qualified applicants accepted each year. Often, at least two years of undergraduate study in a related field are required before you can be admitted to the first professional degree programme. However, it would be far better to consider applying after having completed up to four years of university study. You must also check the university calendar to identify tests such as LSAT (law) or DAT (dentistry) that may be required. Deadlines vary, but generally, you should apply to a Canadian university at least eight months in advance. Hence, you should start researching the university/colleges you want to apply to approximately 15 months in advance. You need this time to go through the complete application process which includes identifying which institution best suits your needs and in turn if you fit into their applicant criteria, apply to the university, wait for a response from them and then get into the visa application process. Typical entry points for international students are the September and January semesters. You may consult the Directory of Canadian Universities (DCU) which is the official guide to Canada’s universities published by The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) (www.aucc.ca). THE BUSINESS OF FAMILY YOUTH INC CHATS WITH PARIMAL MERCHANT, DIRECTOR, FAMILY MANAGED BUSINESS COURSE AT SP JAIN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, ON WORKING WOMEN, CHOOSING THE RIGHT MBA AND MORE
What differentiates SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) from other business schools? SPJIMR is innovative right from crafting its mission to its programmes and its pedagogy. It aims to promote valuebased growth. While it has best of placements it also has unique leadership development programmes. Students work with corporates as well as NGOs and learn the values of life through programmes like Gita Shibir and those that mentor slum children. SPJIMR is the first in India to create a management programme in Family Managed Business and a management programme for social sector. Your institute has academic partnerships with Dubai, Sydney and Singapore branches of SP Jain Institute. Do you believe an international exposure is crucial for students? In today’s time, global exposure is crucial not only for the students but also for the faculty and the institute itself. Why do you think the Women Manager programme is necessary? Can you give us a brief overview of the programme? Women in family businesses face a peculiar position. Traditionally, they are not expected to work and tend to spend a good amount of time parenting. Once the children grow up, there is a vacuum in their life. Family businesses need talent and 50 per cent of the family’s talent, in the form of the women, remains untapped. Now that business has become gender-neutral, time-neutral and locationneutral, the possibilities for women to play a stronger role have increased. The programme provides management inputs to these women. The programme has been good for self-employed women, women who are fully or partly involved in business, and even for housewives. Coming to the college for three days a month and then applying these concepts in their business for the remaining days gives them
conceptual and practical orientation. It is not that after the programme they should start going to the office. They start playing a more constructive role in their family as well as contribute in thinking for the business. You have also been actively involved in the humanist movement. Can you elaborate on your endeavours towards these causes? Humanist Movement is a global force of volunteers working for a better society and personal life. It has programmes for social actions as well as for personal development. We believe that good people should be actively involved in politics and have our party, Humanist Party, in over 100 countries. As a part of that I have contested the elections twice – once for MLA and once for MP. We believe that one of the greatest dangers is not so much ecological as the threat of weapons and wars. We organised a World March for Peace and Nonviolence that began in New Zealand, passed through 90 countries and ended in Argentina, to promote world opinion against weapons and wars. With many B-schools sprouting in the country, what advice would you give students to help them select the right MBA programme? Do not do MBA just because everybody is doing it. Be clear, do your homework and select the right institute. MBA is not just for getting good jobs; it is for influencing business, society and your own life. It should enable you to grow from being only a consumer to a contributor. Any tips for students who wish to be the entrepreneurs of tomorrow? Believe in yourself. The path is not easy but the journey is extremely exciting. Doing things that you are most excited about is the best part of your life. yi

From Hedge Funds to Online Schools
There are always doubts about the Internet doubling as an educator, but Salman Khan has made virtual schooling a reality
T
he story of the Khan Academy organisation starts in 2004. Its owner and creator, Salman Khan, was working as a hedge fund analyst after completing a Master of Business Administration programme from Harvard Business School. His cousin was facing some trouble with learning maths so he began teaching her via the phone with the assistance of an interactive notepad which functioned over the Internet.
HELPING HIS COUSIN
The technique seemed to help his cousin understand quite a bit of what she was learning, especially since the informal setting allowed Salman to slow down every time she was finding it difficult to grasp the subject, and speed up at topics she was able to
learn quickly. His cousin also found the teaching style to be relaxed and practical which was much better than the rigid teaching methods which were being adopted in classrooms. Word got out and by 2006, Salman had begun tutoring more than 15 relatives and friends. Salman decided that it would make more sense to make videos of his tutorials and upload them to the Internet so everyone could learn. With this in mind, he started uploading tutorials to a YouTube account in November 2006.
GAINING MOMENTUM
The YouTube account soon received many hits from students looking for alternate ways to study. Students were finding it incredibly easy to learn using
Salman’s technique and had started referring to his notes as their primary learning tools. They enjoyed his casual approach to the subject along with his use of humour and the fact that the videos could be paused so the students could have in-depth practice in certain topics before moving on. There was plenty of praise for Salman’s teaching methods on the YouTube account in the form of comments from students. This prompted him to quit his fulltime job as a hedge fund analyst in late 2009 and focus entirely on uploading new videos to his YouTube account which was given the alias Khan Academy.
KHAN ACADEMY
The Khan Academy website was soon launched which hosted the same videos as Salman’s YouTube

account, along with other functions such as progress tracking, practice exercises and a variety of tools for teachers. The website featured many interactive programmes and tutorials. There were options on the website tutorials to alter the pace to suit the needs of each individual student. It propagated a one-to-one learning system so each student would get the individual attention they needed as opposed to a classroom scenario where a single educator’s attention is divided between multiple students. The website also made learning fun by turning it into a game and awarding badges for doing well by tracking students’ progress in an overall leader board. This system was found to improve motivation, especially among younger students. By 2010, Khan Academy achieved considerable success and was among the leaders in web-based education programmes. The YouTube channel recorded more than 202 million visits from over 2,000 instructional videos and had an excess of 429,000 subscribers. The system was hailed as an innovative approach to education, as the format had managed to emulate one-on-one tutoring without the flagrant cost it would require to employ countless teachers. There
was also praise for Salman Khan for having put the tutorials on the Internet where they are easily accessible to those who cannot afford tutoring on a personal basis.
RECOGNITION
Salman Khan was featured in PBS NewsHour, The Colbert Report, Forbes magazine, on Fortune magazine’s list of 40 under 40, in Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and in several other news bulletins. He was awarded the Microsoft Tech Award for education and was invited by Bill Gates to speak at TED 2011. Khan Academy receives significant funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Google also showed its appreciation by providing the Khan Academy US$2 million to create more courses and translate their core library into the world’s most widely spoken languages.
“I’d say we’ve moved about 160 IQ points from the hedge fund category to the teachingmany-people-in-a-leveragedway category. It was a good day his wife let him quit his job.” -Bill Gates
WIDESPREAD USE
The techniques employed by Khan Academy were soon adopted by classrooms in the USA. Students were allowed to learn from Salman’s tutorials first to grasp the subject. Their teachers would then explain it to them afterwards. Salman Khan visited many schools to explain his tutorials and provide tips to teachers who were using his tutorials in the classrooms. Offline videos were distributed in Asia, Africa and Latin America by not-for-profit organisations. In mid-2012, Khan Academy had a multi-language release in Indonesian, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Swahili, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Xhosa, Greek, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Bengali, Hindi, and Mandarin.
FUTURE
At the moment, Khan Academy primarily offers pre-college mathematics and physics tutorials but Salman Khan aims to revolutionise teaching methods by creating “tens of thousands of videos in pretty much every subject” and hopes to create “the world's first free, world-class virtual school where anyone can learn anything”. yi

What has been the highlight of your photography career so far? In music photography, the highlight was being able to shoot Metallica. What is the next step? Any more projects like #TAD365 lined up? I am shooting a lot of video content. I also hope to do more professional work and set up a business. No more personal social projects for a while. I need to make a living.
How did you get into photography? I used to photograph music gigs on a camera that I borrowed from my cousin. That’s where it all started. I used to be a regular at gigs and used to make frequent trips to Goa and travel a lot around Mumbai itself. Why did you choose to specialise in music and artiste photography? Musicians loved what I photographed and that’s what built a strong rapport with them. My professional career started when I borrowed a DSLR camera from another photographer friend and began working at Blue Frog. How did you manage to juggle between college and studies in the day and working on nights and weekends? I hated college. I managed to submit projects and maintain a decent enough attendance to be able to avoid being blacklisted. Also, back then I didn’t have that much serious work. Where was the starting point of #TwitterADay365? What inspired the idea? I’ve always wanted to do a 365 day project but never got down to it. Shooting portraits was another thing that was always on my mind, but it
never took off. #TAD365 was perfect because it didn’t involve music and it meant that I shoot a lot of people I don’t know personally. It’s nice to study their reaction and make them feel comfortable in front of a camera. Can you tell us any particular incident that stood out during the #TAD365 project? Quite a few. Once, I had a friend wait on the middle of a road while I waited across the road for a bus to pass by to get a perfect long exposure. It was quite funny seeing him getting stares from passersby while he was holding a white placard in his hand. What kind of challenges did you face during #TAD365? Tons of problems, the first being monetary. It’s a self funded project. Secondly, it’s really difficult trying to coordinate with people. When I started the project, it was during the monsoons so I had to endure the heavy rains on my motorbike so I could photography people in whatever time was available. Which are your 3 favourite images from #TAD365? Can’t answer this. The project is still underway and I’ve shot 335 as of today.
What advice do you have for budding photographers? Hard work. Buying a camera doesn’t make you a photographer. Photography and photography as a potential career/business are two different things. yi

Favourite photographer – Zack Arias/Martin Prihoda/ Todd Owyoung Your style – Very non-fine art and real Music gigs and festivals – Great as long as they’re well spaced and not saturated A celebrity you’d want to photograph – Eminem A handy tip for photographers – When in doubt, use Auto White Balance. Always shoot in RAW. Take multiple backups.

I wish I had taken dancing classes prior to becoming an actor and my parents had encouraged me a little bit to learn ‘naach-gaana’ Tell us about Sidharth Malhotra the student. Were you anything like your character in Student of the Year? Not at all. Nobody broke into a song when I entered, neither did I wear such cool clothes. I went to Don Bosco School in Delhi and after that I went to Bhagat Singh college, where I studied BCom (Hons). I wasn’t really inclined towards studies. I think the only place my mum can call me ‘Student of the year’ is in the film, nowhere else. But I used to play sports, as I did in the film as well. In fact, I used to play rugby, not in college, but for a club in Delhi. Do you still find time for sports? You know, very sweetly Abhishek
Bachchan called me recently and said a bunch of actors play football every Sunday for this charity, so I’m very excited to join them. Hopefully I can go and try my hand at football. I think Ranbir, Abhishek, John and everybody else play together so I’m looking forward to that. Did you have any difficulties adjusting to Mumbai when you first moved here? Of course. Mumbai is a very harsh, lonely place when you come here for the first time. I think being an outsider in the city is tough, even if someone was going to Delhi from Mumbai it would be the same. But luckily, Bollywood worked out for me and now I feel much calmer. I’ve been
in Mumbai for 5 years, but it took me four years to settle down here. It takes a while. Did you always want to be an actor? What was your very first acting role? No, actually I was mostly into sports and didn’t participate in any plays or audition for any acting roles as a student. How did you foray into modelling? Could you share with us what your journey in this field was like? After school, when I just entered college, I thought I would probably do an MBA, because my brother did it, and get a job in Finance. But I got into modelling in college and after that the ‘Bollywood bug’ bit me, not before that.
BOLLYWOODHUNGAMA.COM
How did the transition from modelling to acting happen? That actually happened through the same agency I was modelling for. Anubhav Sinha was producing a film for newcomers and I was lucky that I auditioned and they liked me. Then after a second audition, I signed the contract for the film. That’s how it all started; I wouldn’t have come to Mumbai if I hadn’t signed that contract. Luckily, the film never got made. After the film bombed, he took SRK (Ra One) and I took KJo. It’s funny if you think about it because he worked with SRK after 4 years and I worked with KJo after 5 years. Coming from a non-film family, what where the biggest challenges you faced while trying to make it in the film industry? If you are from the industry, you know people, you know how the industry functions, you know who to meet and it becomes much easier

to get a meeting because your family knows them. But the most important difference is awareness, even in how to conduct yourself off-camera. Because on-camera everybody tells you what to do, it’s how you act off-camera that makes or breaks your career and that’s what someone from a filmi background is really aware of. Your first big break in the film industry was as Karan Johar’s assistant director (AD) for My Name is Khan. How did that happen? When the Anubhav Sinha film didn’t happen, I was out of work and living at a friend’s house and he had a lot of friends who were assistant directors. They used to come to the house and speak about their work as ADs. And I felt that if you tell someone you want to be a Hindi film actor, you need to know something about the field instead of just saying I want to be an actor, because there are so many people like that. That’s when I realised I don’t want to go for auditions and I decided to make a résumé and start sending it out to people. Because of my fashion background, I knew a lot of designers such as Manish Malhotra, and I think that’s the reason people think I’m Manish’s nephew. I got through Dharma because of Manish.
are. We have sat in studios waiting for actors to come in at 1 AM as everybody has their own timings and lifestyle. So hopefully I’ll remember this for a long time, because most actors tend to forget it. Have you taken any acting lessons? How important do you think prior training is for debut actors? No, I haven’t done any formal acting training. I think more than acting, it is important to learn the technical aspect of filmmaking, because no one can really teach you how to act. But I wish I had taken dancing classes prior to becoming an actor and my parents had encouraged me a little bit to learn naach-gaana. So if you think you want to become an actor, you should enrol in a dance class and train 6-7 times a week. Today in Bollywood, boys are dancing more than girls. And I have entered the industry at a time when they want men to do item songs. It’s sad, ten years ago heroes were not meant to dance, it was the girl’s job to dance. But now, this is a phase when actors are supposed to dance, be it stage shows, television or movies.

How was your experience as an assistant director? Do you sympathise with them now, having worked as one yourself? I actually worked as an AD for Dostana first, but that for a brief while towards the latter half of the film. My real experience as an assistant director was for My Name is Khan. For me, it was the best acting school I could ever go to. You’re working with the best people from the industry and Dharma productions takes good care of all its technicians, actors, everybody. And yeah, the experience teaches you what not to do. Because you know if someone is asking you to come on time to the set or for a dubbing, you know how important their deadlines

PARTY AT A CLUB OR CHILLING AT HOME? I prefer chilling at home, probably calling some friends home. SACHIN TENDULKAR OR LIONEL MESSI?
I grew up with Sachin, but because of the football I played for SOTY, I’m leaning towards Messi now.
Khan and Karan knew both of us wanted to be actors. After the film ended, we approached Karan and we were auditioned for the company. Meanwhile, Karan started developing the script of SOTY with Tarun Mansukhani and we thought Tarun was going to make the film. We were really excited that the director of Dostana would be directing us. But suddenly, I don’t know why, Karan changed his mind. Luckily for us, he said, “I want to make this film” because he had co-written the script and wanted to make a younger, cooler film instead of epic love stories. So we were just at the right place at the right time. He didn’t even audition any other boys for the film, he knew he wanted us.
Did SRK share any acting tips with you? During my stint as an AD I used to clap the slate when the shot was ready, so I was very close to the actor all the time. Whenever we had time, SRK used to give me advice on his
Did you find it difficult to transition from modelling into acting? Modelling has nothing to do with acting; they are two completely different professions. In acting, you are using all your senses; you are talking,
Farah ma’am screaming on the mic is not the easiest person to work with[...]your palms are actually sweating, you’re forgetting steps and taking breaks own. Once he told me, “Always keep looking at your props.” I was amazed at how sweet he was because one of the first times he spoke to me, he was giving me acting tips! He told me to observe my surroundings because he does that. Gradually, since we shot for a long period, I gathered the courage to go up to him and ask him questions. He was very sweet and encouraging. We have seen Shahrukh and Kajol do stuff in half an hour which we took hours to do because they understand continuity, camera angles, they know everything. And they were very sweet to share their knowledge with us, SRK I think more than Kajol. How did you manage to grab your big break with Student of the Year ? Both Varun and I were working as assistant directors for My Name is

THE ONE ACTOR YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF WORKING WITH: Mr Bachchan. It would be cool to share screen space with him. I don’t think I’ ll be able to do much, but it’ ll be cool to perform with him.
What was your first meeting with Shah Rukh Khan like? I was completely star struck. Our first real meeting was in LA and after four days of shoot, I realised that he knows my name when he said “Sidharth woh dena”. It feels cool when someone like him knows your name. And he does make a lot of effort; I remember he gave people from all the different departments (costume, art, assistant directors) a book each. And he gave different people different books; he gave me a book on James Bond with Daniel Craig on it. And he wrote that this reminds me [SRK] of a ‘not-so-good-looking’ version of you [Siddharth] and also I hope you become whatever you want to in the industry. I still have that book with me.

on the mic is not the easiest person to work with. It’s tough to pretend to be a hero in the first song and hold the girl, twirl her around and then look into the camera. The first five days were very torturous to understand what all needs to be done. It is a very overwhelming thing, firstly, because you are on a Karan Johar set with thousands of dancers and Farah Khan is screaming on the mike. We were also pressurised because we were working with Karan Johar, who has never worked with newcomers before. It’s difficult to pretend to be confident when you walk onto the set on the first day, when your palms are actually sweating and you’re forgetting steps and taking little breaks because you’re just so nervous. You have to control your nerves; it took me 5 days to do that.
SOTYTHEFILM.COM
hearing, expressing and reacting. In modelling there is only one element – you just have to pose for a picture, so it’s comparatively easier. Anybody who is a good model cannot think he is a good actor or even if he is a bad model, doesn’t mean he will be a bad actor; you cannot mix modelling and acting together. Just because in the recent past good looking models such as John Abraham and Arjun Rampal have become actors, people think that transitioning from modelling to acting is easy, but that’s not true. Did acting come naturally to you? Do you remember the experience of your first scene? Not at all, it was really tough. The shoot actually started with a song called Radha. Farah ma’am screaming
Are there any scenes you find more difficult to enact than others? For me it would be dancing, the only thing that scares me is dancing. I feel I have improved but I wish I would’ve learnt this two years ago. I think Karan was really intelligent in using us in a way that was close to our real personalities. He never asked us to pretend to be someone else, he used to say, “How would you do it in real life? How would you and Varun fight?” So he kept it very real. He made a ‘filmi picture’ real. We found it difficult to do the fighting scene and the screaming, which you see in the climax of Student of the Year and was shot in Kashmir. To hit somebody and then say dialogues and then topple over someone; it’s almost like a dance you have to do while saying lines. I remember both Varun and I were stuttering and mumbling, also because it was really cold. That was probably one of the most challenging scenes for both of us, but we were very happy that we managed to pull it off in our first film. I think action and angry scenes are challenging, but for me dancing is probably the most difficult.
SHORT TAKES ONE PLACE YOU CAN HOLIDAY YEAR AFTER YEAR: I would like to say New York, but I can’t afford it year after year, so it would probably be Goa. They’re totally different cities, but I’ve been going to Goa recently, and it’s the most convenient place to go.

SHORT TAKES A FILM YOU WISH YOU’D STARRED IN: Agneepath. I’m a big Bachchan fan, I find the ‘ hero entries’ and things like that quite cool. The film demands a very intense hero and I like that. If I get a chance to do a film like Agneepath, I would love to do it. With respect to Hollywood, I would love to do a superhero film. More than Batman, I think Superman because they’ve still not figured it out. The last one didn’t work out, so maybe I’ ll audition for the next one.
Last year Bollywood saw the entry of a number of fresh faces such as Ayushmann Khurrana, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Pulkit Samrat. How critical is the second movie choice for newcomers? I think it’s very tough. Your first film chooses you; you choose your second film. We were destined to be launched by Karan Johar, the film came to us. For Varun and me, since we didn’t do a solo film (unlike Arjun and Ayushman) which helps as a better barometer of your work, it is even more important. People are watching SOTYTHEFILM.COM
AN ACTOR WHOSE BODY YOU ADMIRE: Katrina Kaif is hot. And I’ve seen recent photographs of Hrithik and I think he’s at his fittest right now. So I would aspire to have a body like his.
YOUR MOST SINFUL INDULGENCE: I like jalebis. But it’s too much sugar so I haven’t had one in a while.
Did you ever think Student of the Year would be such a huge success? Were you prepared for the stardom that followed? Not at all. We got a taste of it during the promotions; it was a big deal that Karan Johar was launching a bunch of newcomers. Initially, we thought, who’s going to want to see us give interviews, no one knows us. But Karan and Dharma productions went all out; we went to 13 cities, including London and Dubai to promote our film. It’s not an easy task when you’ve not done any work and people question you on television about your views on things. It’s very tough to not come across over confident or arrogant or seem dumb. All three of us went through a phase of chatting with each other and discussing how the promotions were much tougher than the film itself.
and judging us. The ones who like us are looking forward to better work and the ones who don’t, we need to convince them that we can do better. It's difficult to top Karan Johar, but which other directors are you looking forward to working with? I am a big Imtiaz Ali fan, Zoya Akhtar fan, Shimit Amin, even Tarun Mansukhani – I loved Dostana. So there are a lot of directors; we’ve not even started as yet. Hopefully, we will work with them in the future. But as you said, you cannot top Karan Johar in Bollywood, so I think our struggle begins now. Do you have any advice for young people who come to Mumbai with dreams of being a film star? You cannot just sit at home and wait for that phone call. That’s very idiotic. If you want to become an actor, you will do anything that will help. I have seen people, some of my friends also, who used to give auditions and then stay at home and hit the gym. It’s best if you can find something that relates to films, even a part-time job, writing or shooting or any other aspect. Also, everyone wants to do a solo main-lead. We didn’t get a solo role in our first film, even though we got Karan Johar to launch us. Everyone wants the role of the lead, but I think you need to be aware of what you’re capable of. For example, Aditya Roy Kapoor is doing a film, Yeh Jawani hai Deewani, where he is playing Ranbir’s friend. It’s really cool that he’s doing this and also a solo film on the side. He could easily say, “No, I don’t want to play Ranbir’s friend”. Now it’s more about performance and characters. So it’s more important to break in rather than wait for that one solo lead for years. It is a common belief that there is no place for friendships in Bollywood. Do you agree with this idea? I’m too young to figure out any friendships here, but I do get that psyche. Maybe because Varun and I

met as ADs and not as actors, we do share a bond. But all the people I’ve met, I found them really cool and regular, especially the younger lot like Ranbir, Arjun Kapoor, etc. I’m not friends with them because I am only 3-4 months old in the industry but I think there is the possibility of that friendship. But it cannot be beyond a certain point because it’s tough. The lifestyle of an actor is such that nobody has the priority of making friends, work comes first. Even if I want to be friendly with somebody, even if I’m friends with Imran, it’s not possible that I can meet him everyday; if I’m in the city, he might be shooting for something else. I won’t say you can’t be friends, but there’s only a degree of friendships you can have in Bollywood because of our profession. BOLLYWOODHUNGAMA.COM
48 Coverstory.indd 55
Who would you say are your closest friends from the film industry? I’m close to Varun. I’ve only been here for 3 months, so whatever interaction I’ve had...I think Ranbir’s really cool, I’ve met him socially, I went to Imran’s house recently. So I think this is just the beginning. I’ve had a lot of firsts in the last three months, first time I went to Mr Bachchan’s house for Diwali, so it’ll happen gradually. Karan is very considerate about how he portrays us or introduces us to people. Varun and Alia still had a lot of friends in the industry, I think for me it was more important. Till now everyone has been nice and cool, I think I’ll find out later if this lasts or not. I’ll tell you after a year’s time if I am friendly with anyone, because right now everybody is warm and encouraging.
SHORT TAKES THE ONE ACTRESS YOU SECRETLY WISH YOU COULD ROMANCE ON-SCREEN: Lots. I haven’t romanced any of them. Kareena Kapoor, even Kajol. I would love to do a film with Kajol, I don’t know if I can romance her, but it would be an interesting script, something like a younger boy-older woman story.
Do you feel comfortable at the social gatherings in Bollywood? At times I feel a little out of place, at large gatherings. Whoever I’ve met in the younger lot are cooler; with the senior actors, I am almost in awe of them and don’t really know what to say. What can we expect from Sidharth Malhotra in 2013? There’s going to be romance and there might be some action as well. It would be nice to do another genre, something very different from SOTY, but that’s not confirmed as yet. There is a film with Dharma and Phantom (Anurag Kashyap’s company). It’s like a light romantic comedy, starring me and Parineeti Chopra. It is being directed by Vinil Matthew who is an ad filmmaker and first time film director. What plans for Valentine’s Day? No plans for Valentine’s Day as of now. No girlfriend, no relationship right now. I think Valentine’s Day is a day when everyone pays for love through flowers and gifts. Till now there’s no relationship in sight, I wouldn’t mind a date though, but you can’t plan these things. yi FOR MORE CANDID CONFESSIONS FROM SIDHARTH MALHOTRA USE THE QR SCANNER ON YOUR PHONE

Glimpses of a
Beautiful Mind TIME FOR INTROSPECTION
Today all other issues seem insignificant in comparison to what we seem to be facing in our country. A terrible moment of reflection and pain at the cost of an innocent life. A young medical student tried to go home in a public bus and faced one of the most violent gang rapes known in recent times, a journey back home became a journey to a traumatic painful death. One that the entire country is reacting strongly against. One that we feel deep revulsion and anger against. What is it that can revolutionise our future so that society progresses in a positive way? At a cocktail with Shimon Peres, Nobel laureate President of Israel, I was riveted by enlightening thoughts on culture, values and love that seem so apt for our times.

revitalising moments of my life. I was prepared for a chat about politics, technology and where the world is headed, and yes, all that did get discussed. What was invigorating was how he linked everything to humanity so brilliantly, and the secret of all success and creation to love, compassion and decoding the human
In light of the recent crimes that have rocked the Indian consciousness, Nisha JamVwal shares Israel’s President Shimon Peres’ inspiring philosophy on humanity brain. Progress, according to Peres, is not about introducing computers and computer-literate people to be high-tech. He spoke eloquently about changing and sensitising society, to enable women to work, to focusedly educate the youth of our country. “Whoever discriminates against women discriminates half a nation and if women don’t have proper education their children will not be well educated,” warned Peres, echoing my intrinsic belief that we need to create the foundation of values at schools. “If children will not be educated there can be no progress. You have to invest in the youth more than ever before because the youth is going to face tremendous challenges and competition in the future and take the country to great progress. The past is too poor to answer the calls of the future. Past is passed away,

let us concentrate on a future without prejudices” is the realistic approach to the future of the world presented by one of those people, whom you hear, and feel inspired toward further metamorphosis and growth within you.
STATE OF THE NATION
Rape, corruption, political unrest, scams. We live in the midst of violent, dishonest, turbulent times where we don’t believe in the capability of our leaders and find society has given too little thought to safety, civil behaviour and looking out for the common man. The recent shocking rape and murder has churned the souls of our people. Seeds of this grotesque and terrible behaviour must also lie in the upbringing stages at homes and schools. I feel strongly about this acquisitive world where value systems are sacrificed at the altar of materialism and we need to instil a sensitising approach to women and children, rather than uncivilized animallike behaviour at grass root levels. Ironically, Peres felt we are a nation of love and tolerance. “China is cruising forward at a breakneck speed. But I feel India has an edge as it teaches us a lesson in co-existence – in a collection of differences – in language, in sects that coexist facing great suffering. You keep full freedom of your people without any attempt to impose equality. Such a diverse people live in your large country, with a heritage of culture, values and love. India can teach many countries of the world how to deal with delicate problems without compromising freedom. You may have many problems but you do not impose force but work with freedom,” he said endearingly. “In a world where the air, water, land, all is insufficient, it is technology and science that can solve problems,” and with this in mind, Peres reaches out to the youth of the world, urging them not to follow the path to banks and stock exchanges but to laboratories and learn and solve the problems of and for the future.
LOVE IS ALL WE NEED
The message of compassion and love which is so needed in our times is the one
aspect that came through to me in his inspiring talk on nanotechnology, world politics and the human brain – aspects that can bring change, success and rapid technological advancement. I recall Peres’ inspiring words at that cocktail on passion intertwined with modernism and technology. “In Israel, our land lacking in natural resources, we learned to appreciate our greatest national advantage: our minds. Through creativity, love and innovation, we transformed barren deserts into flourishing fields and pioneered new frontiers in science and technology,” he shared, and that brought to me strongly how fast we could move ahead if India practiced tolerance and instilled values of mutual respect, tolerance and compassion at a young age in schools. Peres fell in love too, and in a candid moment shared, “Early in the morning [of my life], I fell in love with the girl who went on to become my wife. At that time, we were so naive. I wanted to charm her, so I read her Das Capitol by Marx.” He twinkled charmingly, “Many of us were educated on the literature of India – when we fell in love we read Rabindranath Tagore, and when we matured understanding Gandhi, who in our eyes was a prophet. He had said he couldn’t save the poor farmers from poverty but he could offer them spiritual wealth. If today’s minister wants to be a leader he must have an intrinsic love of the people like Gandhi did. People say to a leader – you have to love us, not us love you. People expect from leaders not to be on the top, but to be ahead.” Yes indeed. Our leaders need to lead and govern not rule and terrorise.
THE YOUTH ARE THE FUTURE
It is his vision on the youth as the new future, the game changer that resonates with my views on the country blazing a success trail worldwide. And I quote Peres verbatim, “I read a fascinating book that says a baby is born totally altruistic. A baby doesn’t have an ounce of ego. What then develops ego is his existential need [to survive]. Who are his enemies? The baby starts his fight with parents. The baby is born free, the parents love him but they want to control him. The minute he is born he has to fight for his freedom and existence and as he grows the fight becomes more and more complicated and then the baby develops its ego. Which means the baby can be a good man. If we would know what put us in love or hatred then we have decoded and know there is machinery for it. We already know that if we tackle the youth properly we can overcome some of the most dangerous maladies of wars, fires, agony and hatred in the world.”
WE’RE ALL CHANGEMAKERS
“We need to better understand with the help of nanotechnology what makes us happy, angry, moderate, not aggressive. I believe the future is biological and I think the greatest achievement until now in science was done by the Lord in heaven because he produced our brain. Whether we know whether there is lord in heaven or not we have to have the Lord in our heart. Before we look at the skies let’s look inside ourselves. That is I believe what can change our future,” said Peres who so aptly pointed out that it is the human brain that created the computer. Not the other way around. So if we use that brain for the betterment of our fellow men than the destruction of the world and our fellow men, we shall have ourselves a better world, a better future and yes, however blonde it might sound, even ‘world peace’! yi Read more of Nisha’s point of view at www.nishajamvwal.blogspot.com. And the And the Oscargoes to… Oscar goes to… As Hollywood gears up for the 85th Academy Awards, Vatsala Chhibber complies a list of award categories and winners as a tribute to the Oscars
10 Biggest Oscar Omission Award JACK MITCHELL
There have been moments in Oscar history when the wisdom of the Academy’s decisions have been questioned. For example, some of Hollywood’s most celebrated classics such as Citizen Kane, Psycho andWizard of Oz have been denied the golden statue. But possibly the most regrettable omission is Alfred Hitchcock’s. Unfortunately, the master of suspense never recieved an Oscar in the Best Director category, despite being nominated five times. When he was finally given the lifetime achievement award, Hitchock limited his acceptance speech to a cold and curt “Thank you”. Ouch.
9 Best Host Award
Being asked to host the Academy Awards is almost as great an honour as winning the gold statue. Some of the famous names who have hosted the Oscars over the years are Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin, David Letterman, etc. But the best remembered and arguably the wittiest host on the Oscar stage is Billy Crystal, who has hosted the awards 8 times, more than anyone else in the history of the Academy Awards. Since last year’s hosts Anne Hathway and James Franco were subjects of much mockery due to their awkward hosting skills, we hope this year’s host Seth McFarlene (creator of Family Guy) can meet the expectations of the millions who will be watching on the 24th of February.
8 Best Political Statement Award
“Shame on you Mister Bush!” These words used by documentary filmmaker Michael Moore during his acceptance speech resulted in immediate drama. The auditorium was filled with sounds of booing and cheering, and much was said about Moore using the Oscar platform to criticise George Bush and his policies, who was then the American President.
7 Best Gown Award
The one question that is heard more than anything else on the Oscar red carpet is “Who are you wearing?”. While nominees worry about winning the prestigious golden statue, most other celebrities are battling pressures of a different kind: making it to the ‘best dressed’ list. Some of the most memorable gowns in Oscar history include Audrey Hepburn’s dainty floral dress, Hillary Swank’s deep blue gown with an equally deep back, Anne Hathway’s sparkling Armani gown and Angelina Jolie’s white silk number with a daring neckline. However, Kate Hudson’s gown at the 2003 Academy Awards, designed by the talented Donatella Versace, is best remembered for its sophistication, elegance and glamour. The dress was made of 14 karat gold and contained intricate embroidery that transformed Hudson into a glowing, golden beauty.

6 Best Performance Award The Oscar stage has witnessed performances by musical legends such as Bono, Micheal Jackson and Madonna. However, at the risk of seeming biased, we’d like to say the most mesmerising performance at the Academy Awards has been that of A.R. Rahman, whose collaboration with another music maestro, Hans Zimmer, easily qualifies as musical heaven.
5 Best Acceptance Speech Award
4 Biggest Scandal Award
Looks like some children never grow up. Last year, Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the role of Harry Potter in the popular movie franchise, openly critisised the Academy for not giving Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows due recognition. He said, “I don’t think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids’ films, unless they’re directed by Martin Scorsese. I was watching Hugo the other day and going, ‘Why is this nominated and we’re not?’ I was slightly miffed.”
1 Biggest Curse Award
Angelina Jolie tops the list of Oscar scandals because after the event where she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Girl Interrupted, the sultry actress shared a rather lingering lip lock with her brother! Tabloids immediately caught the intimate moment and speculations of a non-platonic relationship between the siblings emerged.
3 Longest Standing Ovation Award
Winners of the Best Actress Award face marital trouble, which ends in divorce soon after their Oscar win. Leading actresses such as Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Hillary Swank and Julia Roberts are some victims of this Oscar curse. However, some Hollywood wives have escaped such misfortune, such as Helen Mirren who won an Oscar for her performance in The Queen and remains happily married. For now. yi
FLICKR USER TWM1340
Cinematic legend Charlie Chaplin made his way into the Oscar record books in 1972 when he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Chaplin was honoured with a 12-minute long standing ovation, the longest ever in the history of the Academy Awards.
2 Sore Loser Award
JOELLA MARANO
When Tom Hanks recieved the Best Actor award for his performance as a gay lawyer in the movie Philadelphia, he created one of the most memorable moments in Oscar history. A visibly emotional and teary-eyed Hanks thanked his high school drama teacher and a classmate in his speech. “I mention their names because they are two of the finest gay Americans, two wonderful men that I had the good fortune to be associated with, to fall under their inspiration at such a young age,” Hanks said. “I wish my babies could have the same sort of teacher, the same sort of friends.”

The end user has to feel comfortable in wearing the garment he/she has invested in. The clothes should also compliment the personality of the user and enhance his overall image. What will be the hottest trend in men’s fashion in 2013? Prints and solid dark colours will feature a lot. Traditional ethnic wear like bundgallas will also be seen on the ramp this season.

Fret no more about getting pouty with your boyfriend this Valentine’s Day. Here’s all you need to know about getting irresistible lips in 4 simple steps

Moisturise your lips, ideally with a colourless, vitamin E-infused lip balm or chap stick. For the Indian climate, it helps if the balm has SPF as well (Dior Crème de Rose Smoothing Plumping Lip Balm, `1607) and is not water-based. Lining your lips is not always necessary, but if you have small lips and would like them to be bigger and poutier, you will need to line them. Draw the outline a little outside your natural lip line carefully. Either use a liner that matches the colour of your lips or that blends with the colour of your lipstick (Colorbar Plum, `325).
Now apply lipstick. Your lipstick should complement your complexion. Medium to dark skin tones are perfect for nude shades with a peach undertone (Lakme Enrich Satin Lip 266, `225). Lighter skins can pull of a range of pinks (M.A.C Après Chic Haute Altitude, `990). Dark lipsticks like red and orange are loud and are best left for late night parties.

If you have chosen to keep your lips thin, finish off with a light layer of lip gloss (Revlon Colorburst, `500) on the centre of your bottom lip and the cupid’s bow on the upper lip to add a polished and pouty touch to your look. Pucker up!

Magic makeup trick
On days when the weather makes your skin misbehave or you have worked up schedules so your skin shows eruptions, just take a lot of baby lotion and let the skin absorb it. Follow this up with pressed powder to avoid the skin looking too shiny. Wear lots of smudge proof kajal and dollop some waterproof mascara. PRE- AND POSTPROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL
AMBRO, FREEDIGITALPHOTOS.NET
HAIR REMOVAL
Hair can be removed in various ways. Some of the methods, such as shaving, plucking and waxing, only provide temporary results. Some other methods, such as electrolysis, are painful and tedious and associated with a risk of scarring. In recent years, laser hair removal has been found to offer the safest and most permanent solution for hair removal. The results depend on the type of hair present. Usually the coarser and darker the hair (for example in the armpits, lower legs), the better the response to laser. In other areas where the hair is finer and lighter (for example facial hair), the response may be slower. Laser hair removal is carried out as an outpatient procedure. Before the treatment, topical anaesthetic cream (numbing cream) may be applied for 30-60 minutes. During the laser, there is minimal discomfort. The time taken depends on the area of hair removed. There is no special skin care required after the laser. The number of treatments range from 4-8, and treatments are performed every 1-2 monthly. Results may vary on individual hair growth patterns and hormonal imbalances.
• Stop bleaching/threading/waxing hair a month before your appointment • After the laser treatment, avoid excessive exposure to the sun, especially between 11 am and 4 pm for at least a week • Use SPF 15-30 sunscreen lotion regularly • Do not splash warm/hot water to clean the treated area for at least 2 days after the treatment • Do not scrub the treated area too hard • Do not swim for 2 days after the procedure • Do not bleach/thread/wax the treated area in between the treatment. You could, however, shave the hair 2-3 times. During treatment, hair regrowth occurs in three phases: • 1st to 2nd week – the shedding hair will grow out and fall off, or can be shaved; but do not shave too often • 3rd to 4th week – usually no hair growth occurs • 5th to 6th week – the hair grows, but is thinner, softer and less dense • 6th to 8th week – repeat next laser session
“Women have been known to have soft skin since ages, thus we inculcated that belief in our minds – that women are best without body hair. But if one wishes to leave their body hair unshaved, it’s her choice and there is nothing wrong with it.”
-Nikhil Shardhara
“It’s kind of a turn off, especially on the back and armpits!”
“Chest hair kind of looks sexy on some men, but I don’t like men with back hair.”

WORLD’S TOUGHEST RIDERS If you consider yourself a true biker, where is your Iron Butt? Youth Inc tells you about the extreme biking group which calls themselves The Iron Butt Association
T
he result of any long bike ride is an uncomfortable, aching backside. Perhaps in an attempt to glorify this endurance undergone by bikers, the Iron Butt Association was formed and thus named. The Iron Butt Association is located in the United States but is accessible to bikers around the globe. The association promotes long-distance riding and sports a number of endurance-testing rides.
THE DIFFERENT RIDES Depending on your endurance abilities, the Iron Butt Association offers various rides for biking enthusiasts to choose from. As a word of advice, the Association suggests you try one of the easier rides first to assess 74
your abilities and prepare yourself for the more demanding rides. The major rides offered by the IBA are: • Saddle Sore – 1,000 miles in 24 hours • Bun Burner – 1,500 miles in 36 hours • Saddle Sore 5,000 – 5,000 miles in 5 days • Bun Burner GOLD – 1,500 miles in 24 hours • BBG 3000 – Two back-to-back BunBurner GOLD rides; 3000 miles in 48 hours • 100k club – 100,000 documented miles in one year
WHAT ARE THE RULES? Choose a suitable route You know the distance you have to cover, so the next step is to choose
a suitable route. Most riders select scenic, familiar routes as it is an advantage to ride on familiar roads. Choose a witness If you want your ride to be verified by the Iron Butt Association, you need to get a witness to check the beginning and end of your ride. The witness could be a friend or acquaintance who is willing to be present during the start and finish of your race and also be willing to answer questions about your race to the IBA.
KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS
One of the ways the IBA verifies tour rides is by checking your fuel receipts. Therefore, you need to submit these receipts as proof as they contain details such fuel amount and time. The date, time and location on the receipt is

This includes a map with the cities you’ve travelled to marked on it, your fuel receipts, the declaration form filled by your witnesses, etc. Once your ride has been verified and approved, you will recieve a certificate from the Iron Butt Association, which is yours to flaunt! So, can you handle a saddle sore? yi
What motivated you to attempt an IBA ride? Were you successful in your first attempt? It took me three attempts to get it right. The first attempt, I rode my TVS Apache150 to Belgaum but wasn’t successful due to improper time and distance calculation. Second attempt was on my FZ16, where I travelled from Mumbai to Indore and back to Mumbai. But while returning to Mumbai, I had severe back pain and wasn’t able to complete the ride. My third attempt was the final attempt at doing the Ironbutt Saddlesore ride after which I would give up attempting it. I rode my FZ16 from Mumbai to Eklingji (North of Udaipur) and back to Mumbai, this time everything worked out fine and I was happy to have finally successfully completed it. The most challenging part about your ride was… The most difficult part was night riding, where insects started hitting my helmet visor and frequent stops needed to be taken to clear the visor. Also, temperatures in the night drop
The best routes are the ones where you can do a turn around and come back to the place you had started for completing total distance required. I would advise people to do their rides along NH4 and NH8, as the roads there are in good condition.
TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO WISH TO ATTEMPT THE IBA RIDES 1. Do a small trial to cover 400-500 km to see whether you and the bike are up for the challenge. 2. Everything has to planned before starting the ride – where you will be heading and how much distance you will cover. 3. Be ready for uncertainties. You may come across problems due to which completing the ride will not be possible. There is always another day to attempt the ride again. 4. Carry snacks and refreshments for the 24-hour ride. Also carry caffeinated drinks like coffee/Redbull which will help you stay alert. 5. Don’t waste time clicking photos during the ride.Take few important ones which have signboards displaying distance and places covered. FEBRUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated

Rating:
If your earlier Battlefield experience had novel techniques incorporated into your gaming experience, here’s a shot at adept graphology, several pitches, excitement and a complete range of action, sans gunships. GAMEPLAY: Markaz Monolith, together with low-rises to steer through, narrow alleys for flying choppers and rolling tankers to grind around, create sophisticated destruction. With several access spots and unassailable corners, excitement engulfs your action. Markaz Monolith, not the pick of the pack, still outshines Armored Kill. ENVIRONMENT AND MAPS: Epicenter, the most intriguing map, uses focus as its mainstay. Classically Rush – the matches played on this map are simply captivating. Debris, defending capture points, sniper-covers, are all great for conquest. Secrets unfold gradually. Azadi Palace eases into the better ranks of Battlefield 3 maps presenting an opportunity for online combat. Talah Market, as a topping to the maps, is infantry based. Its difficulty lies in ensuing complex team play towards winning. FINAL VERDICT: Online shooting skill is being tested here and the maps are simply enchanting. Put aside your analytical views, spoilt rotten with complex gaming, and you’re left with an easy and relaxed experience. An experience you can keep returning to.

AMERICAN BEAUTY
GREEN DAY – !TRE!
The last of Green Day’s album trilogy, !Tre! is about Green Day returning to their punk roots but experimenting with mainstream music by throwing a mix of pop into their sound. At least, that seems to be the message which is audible from the start of the album with the songs Brutal Love, Drama Queen and Sex Drugs & Violence. As the track list progresses, the songs return to the typical style that would be expected from any Green Day album. The album peaks with the songs Walk Away, Dirty Rotten Bastards and 99 music Revolutions with the energy and drive that is associated with the name Green Day. The final song on the album is a down tempo, ballad-style melody called The Forgotten. Overall, the album will be a hit for hardcore Green Day fans but is probably just passable for others.
WATCH
American Beauty won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1999. It tells the story of an office worker who has a midlife crisis and becomes infatuated with his daughter’s best friend and decides to act on his desires. At the same time, unknown to him, his daughter is dealing with a confused, adolescent phase in her life. The film is narrated by the protagonist as his life spirals out of control into oblivion.

QUICK FIRE INTERVIEW WITH VINOD SHANKAR NAIR Pride of Lions, debut book of ex-army man and celebrated strategist and consultant Vinod Shankar Nair (better known as Captain Vinod), is one that straddles thrills and an honest insight into the army life. Working within the structure of a story within a story, the book is about how an enigmatic teacher helps a group of students find answers to the plague of corruption in India by telling them a story of a fierce war between two armies in No Man’s Land. The book is racy and gritty with numerous twists and turns which will keep the reader guessing until the end. And given that it addresses one of the most pertinent issues of India, it is sure to stay relevant for a long time. Pride of Lions is a rather intense book. What inspired the story? Pride of Lions is a story within a story. It had been stewing inside me for years together but life and the current situation in India today decided that it’s a story whose time has come. It just exploded out of me and the timing couldn’t have been better. We sold our entire first print run of 3000 copies within the first 10 days of release. Your book is obviously drawn heavily from your stint in the Indian Army. How much of it is fact and how much fiction? The story is a work of pure fiction; it is entirely a figment of my imagination. However, the characters and instances are definitely inspired by real people and real life itself. Corruption has become the watchword in India recently but do you think the youth have decided to fight it rather than complain about it? Corruption is the new ‘ignite’ button for Indians today. While we are all galvanized by the thought of eradicating it, I suggest we should first define it, grade its levels, then create a system of ownership and accountability which will decide how to deal with each grade of corruption. Corruption has seeped into every strand of the very fabric of our society, such things don’t happen overnight. We could not have been completely pure till yesterday and suddenly woke up completely corrupt this morning. So eradicating it is going to be a long drawn process. I am convinced that our youth have the potential. The real question is “Will they tap that potential?”
