O

n a recent trip to Dubai, I can surely say I was amazed at the sheer scale of hotels and malls, the variety of cuisines offered at restaurants and the groovy décor at nightclubs which just gets better with each visit. What stunned me the most was shopping at my favourite Shoe District in the Dubai Mall, where I came across a 24 carat gold shoe by Alberto Moretti and another Italian brand who were creating live tattoos on their shoes with your preferred designs. Upon exiting the mall and waiting for my car to show up, I spotted a gleaming hard-to-miss silver-plated Rolls Royce parked at the entrance with the Royal family number plate. The flight back home on the new A380 with its state-ofthe-art bedrooms in the sky got me in a tizzy. Luxury has taken leaps of epic proportion and the level of comfort, elegance and richness has increased exponentially. Even here in India over the past few years things are scaling new heights across all segments, so we enter the alluring and glamorous domain of - The Luxe Life for our January 2016 cover story (Page 36). It brings to light some lesser known facts about the industry and the much talked about radio, video and disc jockeys today. So meet the popular DJ Bosco, RJ Hrishi K. and VJ Gaelyn Mendonca for an inside scoop. 2016 is all about the new year at Youth Incorporated. Studying On Considering a postgraduate degree, but concerned about spending money and time and end up disappointed? Madhura Sansare takes you through the pointers of why your decision to pursue a postgraduate degree will be a positive one

P

eople’s motivations for deciding to apply for postgraduate study vary hugely. Whilst deciding if postgraduate study is right for you there are several questions you can ask yourself. There are a lot of benefits to studying a postgraduate degree. But your reasons have to be right. Why do you want to study further? Are you hoping your postgraduate qualification will enable you to move into a particular career? Are you doing it because you love the subject? Do you just enjoy academics? Do you want to study abroad and gain exposure to the international industries? Are you ready to continue your education in a higher form which will definitely be more complex than your earlier academic life? Be honest with yourself, and then finally ask yourself if your reasons make enough sense for you to invest your time and money in a postgraduate qualification. If you have reached a positive conclusion after your intervention, congratulations. There are many benefits to studying a Master’s degree, and the degree will certainly help you in your career. Pros of pursuing a PG: • Studying, learning and researching can be highly enjoyable and satisfying. You get to know a lot more about your chosen industry in a PG, which will give you an edge over your peers. • Though the starting salaries of postgraduates and undergraduates are not significantly different, considering they have similar work experience, a PG certainly helps your chances to getting a higher pay grade more quickly as you gain more experience. • Some jobs sectors like academia and law tend to favour postgraduates over undergraduates, thus making entry into these sectors easier. • A postgraduate degree gives you a certain edge over your undergraduate peers as your increase specialist knowledge is a major plus, especially when applying for the same job.

16 youthincmag.com January 2016

• A postgraduate teaches you a lot more than just your course study. It teaches you skills like project management, research, organisation, networking and team work. These will definitely come in handy at your next job. • A postgraduate degree is the perfect way to shift professional fields and convert to a new subject. Postgraduates Over Undergraduates From a jobseeker's point of view, we have hit what can only be termed as ‘degree inflation’. A first degree, even if it is a Science or Engineering major, has become the norm today. In a world like ours, where the competition is fierce and the jobs are too less, any addition to your CV is a desirable one. A postgraduate course is kind of an academic finishing school. It helps you brush up on your academic skills while teaching you the industry standards for work ethics. The increasing competition in the research fields is much stronger. If you want to pursue a PhD in your life, you

should know that university departments across the globe are exceedingly wary of taking on PhD without a Masters, and if you are considering research grants, without a postgraduate, your chances are nothing more than slim to none. What does a postgraduate offer from an academic perspective? If you are one of those who expected your major in your Bachelor’s degree to have given you a greater insight into your chosen field and have been disappointed by it, you have nothing to fear with your postgraduate course. Since the numbers of students pursuing a PG are lesser,

students are given more individual attention, thus guaranteeing an increased prowess in your field. Sure, the work is also more intensive, but then you knew that when you decided to pursue a higher course. And what’s more, lecturers are also more interested in teaching a generally more motivated group of students. Unlike your Bachelor’s, you will surely learn a lot in your PG degree. In addition, postgraduate courses are usually more focused and specific than general first degrees, which can reassure concerned employers further. Personal Development One of the most underestimated benefits, we believe that this should be considered as the most important one of all. Skills like time management, research, presentation and writing skills, which are guaranteed to help you in not only your career but also your daily life, are the first things you have to learn while pursuing a post graduate degree. You may find yourself in a small class, having to learn to work closely with people who may not share

your background, and who might be starkly different to you. A Masters degree gives you an insight into team work and tolerance, teaching you to not only understand these people but also to learn to work with them. This is a skill that will become very important to you in the job market. Being fuelled by a dream of being successful in your career is a great reason to consider a postgraduate degree, but we cannot stress enough on the other benefits of making this choice. For most postgraduate students, the fuel to study further is the desire to learn and contribute to their field of expertise. And you will find that there is nothing more important than that. yi

educate Awareness

Unveiling Emotional Abuse The ramifications of emotional abuse can be just as bad as those of physical abuse, if not worse. Madhura Sansare gets into the details of what emotional abuse entails, and how to combat it

E

motional abuse can be defined as any kind of abuse that is emotional rather than physical in nature. It can include anything from verbal abuse and constant criticism to more subtle tactics, such as intimidation, manipulation, and never being pleased. Emotional abuse can take many forms. Three general patterns of abusive behaviour include aggressing, denying, and minimizing. Emotional abuse can result in an altered self-worth and emotional wellbeing for the victim. Blaming, shaming, and name calling are all kinds of verbal abuse which emotionally hurt a victim. The victim may experience severe psychological effects. Tactics of brainwashing and manipulation of emotions can all fall under emotional abuse. Extreme cases of emotional abuse result in the victim not being able to recognise their own feelings on the issue that the abuser may be controlling. This can result in the victim’s and independence and concept of self being systematically taken away. Emotional abuse is not only seen in romantic relationships, as it is popularly thought to be. Many cases of emotional abuse have been noticed and registered in parental, social and professional relationships as well. In an emotionally abusive relationship, a person may feel that there is no way out of the relationship or that without their abuser, they will have nothing. It is hard sometimes to even think of the person who is emotionally abusing you as your abuser, only because the concerned person is usually someone the victim is very emotionally attached to. The idea that emotional abuse is not as terrible as

18 youthincmag.com January 2016

physical abuse is a sham. Just because the wounds cannot be seen, does not make them inexistent. Emotional abuse can do a terrible amount of damage to a person’s mental health. Physically abusive relationships are also found to include aspects of emotional abuse as the only way to maintain power and control in the relationship is through the same. The Silent Abuse Emotional abuse is not all about yelling and shouting matches. It’s more common to find emotional abuse in cases of a distracted or preoccupied partner. Constant criticism or stonewalling (refusing to accept anyone’s perspective but yours) can also lead to emotional abuse. People who stonewall others do not consciously try to put anyone down. But refusing to even think about other people’s perspectives or just dismissing them does tend to hurt others significantly. Distracted partners are more in a ‘do what you want, just leave me alone’ zone. They try to deal with their sense of inadequacy in relationships by simply not trying, and no attempt means failure. Both stonewalling and being distracted can make you feel like: a) You’re unseen and unheard. b) You’re unattractive. c) You don't count. The Effects of Emotional Abuse The most sinister effect of living with an emotionally

abusive person is not the obvious nervous reactions to abusive episodes; it is the adaptations you make to try to prevent them. You tend to become more withdrawn and you walk on eggshells to keep a semblance of peace. Women have a greater tendency to be vulnerable to anxiety, thus making them more susceptible to the negative effects of walking on eggshells. It is common to find them engaging in constant self-editing and selfcriticism to not push their abuser’s buttons. Emotionally abused women may second-guess themselves so much that they may feel like they have lost themselves. Emotionally abused men, on the other hand, tend to isolate themselves and focus more in work or hobbies, just to avoid family interactions. If it is within a family, emotional abuse affects a lot more than just the victim. Everyone in the family tends to lose some degree of dignity and autonomy. Reports suggest that no less than half the members in a family with an emotional abuser suffer from clinical anxiety or depression. Children don’t develop a healthy sense of self-esteem, while adults tend to lose theirs. Signs of Emotional Abuse: You’re on an emotional roller coaster: Manipulation plays a major role in abusive relationships. One minute you feel you are loved, and the next one you’re unsure of if they love you at all because they never seem to be happy with you. You feel isolated: They tell you they want their own time and keep you away from their friends and family. Having your own space is a good thing, but if you’ve started feeling isolated from their life, it may be time to consider walking away. Your arguments with them tend to escalate very quickly: Arguments are a part and parcel of every relationship, but if your arguments tend to move from one topic to another and escalate very quickly, beware. You’re nervous around them: You might notice yourself tip-toeing around them, subconsciously trying to avoid pushing their buttons. If this is happening, take note. It’s time to move on. You go out of your way to make them happy: There’s nothing wrong with wanting to keep the person who is so important to you happy, but when you find yourself pleading for their happiness, there might be an issue. You feel trapped: Helplessness is the first sign of emotional abuse. It is often found that emotionally abusive people try to control all aspects of their victim’s lives, including their phones and laptops. If this is a common phenomenon in any of your relationships, it’s time to pull the plug on them. You self-blame: Because of the constant arguments and put-downs, it may have reached a point where you firmly believe you are the problem, not them. You aren’t the problem. You never were. Walk away. yi

SHHH! It’s no secret!!

Heer Kothari gives her insight on the need to tell your parents about the prospective other

I

opened my inbox this morning and was delighted to receive an email from my editor, instructing me on my next assignment, ‘Should you tell your parents about your significant other’, my jaws dropped! It seemed like he had read my mind. I then decided to face the predicament more practically, delve into the crux of the issue and then write of what I have been personally shoving under the carpet for so long. I pondered deeply about the same, and I realized that only when we see things from the third person’s perspective, would the whole situation become crystal clear. At that age! Well, when we are young, around 14 -18 years or in fact while we are still in school, high school or junior college, it is certainly not a very wise idea to let your parents know of who you are dating. This is because one, you will only learn of what you like or dislike when you make your mistakes. (So you do need to allow yourself the room to tackle your own share of heartbreaks). Two, you could be way too young (and obviously you are too young, as you haven’t even cast a vote or got your driver’s licence yet) to date. Well in this case you are totally stepping on your own toes as you are on the brink of making your career and distractions like these could be side tracked for a later age. Also you may not exactly find the right person at that age (You could’ve probably dated someone for as long as just a fortnight, giving you little chance to tell your parents about the girl or boy you like). A serious thought (What gets involved) The fun and games begin to take a back seat when you’re nearing your mid-twenties. Well, by that time, most of us are on the verge of settling down with our careers and it’s now time to wear the blinders and

20 youthincmag.com January 2016

begin thinking straight. In a nutshell, you need to focus on what you want of a certain relationship. Family backgrounds for instance, compatibility, trust, finances and all the other aspects that get involved in shaping the solid bedrock of the institution of marriage. Reality is harsh but one doesn’t only survive on love. Being a little more introspective and practical too will only work to your advantage in the long run. At such times it isn’t a wise idea to keep things from your parents. You must let them know what is going on in your life. Initially you could face some resistance but you need to suss out real concrete reasons as to why they are resisting a certain relationship. Advantages of going OFFICIAL Telling your parents about the prospective other has its own advantages too. To begin with, you are investing your trust in them and also letting them know you don’t intend cheating them or doing something behind their back. Also it will reassure them that you are not just going to waltz out without their permission, and you respect their opinions. It also underlines the high level of maturity and steadfast value system you have garnered over the years. One must understand that if you genuinely love the prospective other you are seeing, you

aren’t doing anything wrong and if your intensions are clear there is no purpose of keeping things under wraps. Bringing things out in the open will give you a broader picture on the nuances of cultural exchanges and a better insight on the persona of each other’s family members. It gives you and your family the opportunity to conduct a background check in order to uncover the truth that could be hidden from you. Also being parents, they know you best and hence could point out all the red and green flags before you take a stand. After all, we’re not really living in a world where everyone can be trusted. We could go wrong in judging a person. Hence when they see things from a third person’s perspective, they have a better understanding of your partner’s details. In the Indian society speaking to our parents openly about the prospective other seems like a daunting task. But education and exposure are making things slightly easier as parents are becoming more accepting with every passing year. Sometimes their own experience on such matters could make things easier for you to speak up in the open. Tackling the older route Even when one goes by the norms of arranged marriage, it becomes very crucial for you to spend time with your

partner and discuss the confusing aspects and social norms with your parents. A million questions could pop up in the arranged marriage scenario and keeping the questions at bay will only further your confusion, enabling the frustration to get the better of you. One shouldn’t completely succumb to the whims of society. If you think there is something that you strongly disagree, feel free to discuss the same with your parents and take your stand. Also do bear in mind that the ultimate decision rests in your hands as either of you’ll could be wrong in judging a person. Discussing predicaments such as these with your elders can resist a feud from growing into a forest fire. The differences between you and your prospective partner could be vast but one must understand that only if you are able to cope with the differences after convincing your families, will you be able to make things work better. Also don’t go against your parents and walk out. Try your best to put forth your point by communicating with utmost clarity. Consider well what they have to say too. If need be keep your feet grounded and do not get swayed by the decisions imposed on you. Please do realize that the life is yours and it falls upon your shoulders to make fitting decisions for yourself. yi

Stem Cell Research How you can be part of it ? Mr. Vijayaraghavan, General Manager - HR & Shared Services of Stempeutics Research, tells us how we can be at the forefront of scientific research that is building the future

T

he world is rapidly changing around us. We speak in 142 characters and through a constant stream of images. We photograph and document every aspect of our lives. We are moving further and further away from the familiar into the unknown. Science and technology rule our lives, through smart phones and smart televisions. Speed is of the utmost importance here, we want information in a matter of seconds. We want answers to all our questions and cures for all manner of diseases. The wonderful part of all this? It’s actually happening right now. We are getting the answers and moving closer to cures. We are living in a world where we are living the future every day. This is all thanks to advancements made in scientific laboratories. Over years and years of research have led us here. The tireless work of laboratory researchers, looking into making the world a safer and better place has given us cures and treatments for diseases and life threatening ailments. Consider the hottest industry at the moment – the stem cell industry. Students of biology with an inclination towards research are viable candidates in this field. All one needs is a Post Graduate in

22 youthincmag.com January 2016

regenerative medicine or in science and knowledge of biology. Stem cells, the cellular building blocks in our body are the ones responsible for repair, regeneration and now creating treatments, new drugs and cures of a number of life threatening ailments and sicknesses. Working in the stem cell industry is akin to working towards an exciting future. India provides an invigorating field of research for students interested in the stem cell industry. The country is one of the key players in research and development of the stem cell industry in the Asia Pacific region. The Indian government has implemented a number of policies to help encourage the country’s role in leading the way towards stem cell research. The current investment in stem cell research in India is more than Rs 1,000 crore. However, it’s not just the government that has worked towards this endeavor. A number of private companies with attached laboratories are helping to conduct research and create patents of revolutionary drugs and supplements. One of the companies that is at the forefront of this movement is Stempeutics. Based in Bangalore and Manipal, Stempeutics is a company that excels in stem cell research. Their prime objective is to develop stem

cell based medicinal products, through their facilities based Bangalore and Manipal. “Established in January 2006, Stempeutics has been developing innovative stem cell products by nurturing cutting edge research and clinical applications through dedicated efforts of its highly qualified team,” says Mr. BN Manohar, Managing Director at Stempeutics Research. Advanced science is more than just babies growing in test tubes and beginning life in Petri dishes. Research topics like stem cells give us the opportunity to tackle diseases that are tearing apart the planet, from sudden epidemics to terminal urban diseases. Science is changing itself and our world everyday step by step. Along this line, scientists working at Stempeutics have filed over 25 patents and have published over 50 peer reviewed international publications. The company’s main objective is to “deliver safe, effective and affordable stem cell products in a ‘Bench to Bedside’ approach.” As a major player in this field, it’s a fine space for interested parties and students to start training. Working in these laboratories gives students an opportunity to be at the forefront of the development of cutting edge science. Stempeutics is the first company ever to receive a process patent from the state intellectual property office of China (SIPO), for a Stem Cell Drug based on Pooling Technology. Stempeutics is not just making headlines within the space of its research. It’s an extremely evolved space that encourages more and more women in the workspace. The Research and Development arm of the company is actually comprised mostly of women, with just one man. “There has been a drastic change in the statistics of women working today as compared to that in the last 15 years in India,” said Mr. Vijayaraghavan. “Women today feel safe when they step out of their house knowing they have certain facilities, which allow them focus more on their work. Women are more productive and enthusiastic, solve problems, use their creativity, meet challenges and learn new concepts and skills; all this because they know they have excellent people policies at work to back them.” A multi-facted approach like this to move towards the future, not just through their product but

also through their HR system and processes is indeed a rare thing. “With the establishment working in favour of building upon this realm of science, it is becoming easier to spread awareness in the country about the importance of stem cell research and implementation in the realm of science,” said Mr Vijayaraghavan. He also said, “Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modiji, has also urged the scientists to interact with school children and motivate them to build careers in the field of stem cell research.”

“Women today feel safe when they step out of their house knowing they have certain facilities, which allow them focus more on their work. Women are more productive and enthusiastic, solve problems, use their creativity, meet challenges and learn new concepts and skills; all this because they know they have excellent people policies at work to back them.”

In a stronger move to add more to these efforts, India – SAF (an advocacy forum for stem cell) has also announced Stem Cell Awareness Day, from this year on. It’s an effort to make more and more aware of the regenerative, reparative and curative properties of stem cell research. Working with stem cells essentially means working with the future. It’s a very new field that changes every day. In turn, it also changes the world with it. It fills gaps left by existing ailments and creates solutions that are the least intrusive and most beneficial for patients. It’s also an exciting field for those interested in it as a long term career. A comprehensive medical background is not required to be part of it. Instead biology students with an interest in research, who are ready to dive deep into laboratory work, will be perfect candidates. It’s a fulfilling space for those interested in cutting edge scientific research. yi

educate Workplace Hacks

The a rt of

negotiation Be prepared, aware and sure before you enter your senior’s cabin to discuss a pay hike. Anjali Shetty lists easy and stress-free steps to ask for a raise or promotion at your workplace

24 youthincmag.com January 2016

A

sking for a pay hike at work is worse than asking your parents for a raise in pocket money. However, the steps to doing so are the same. You have to have a plan, be patient and yes, be ready to face rejection. We all think we are worth much more than what gets credited in our accounts every month. But, not all of us are comfortable demanding what we are worth. Also, approaching your senior for a raise doesn’t assure that you will get one. It is a lot like a game of chance. You have to take the step and wait for a response. The interaction will be complicated, awkward and above all, uncomfortable. However, if you are ready for it, then things get easy. Are you worth it? The foremost aspect that comes into consideration during an appraisal is the employee’s performance. Before you walk into the cabin, ensure you are 100 per cent confident of your performance. Make notes, collect data and have a concrete plan to argue the point out. You simply can’t keep saying you are productive. You need to have enough proof and reference to go with your claim. There was a time when a yearly raise was mandatory. However, today with the economy not doing well, we have seen this norm diminish. Today, you have to ask for more money. Be prepared By now you know how your company functions. You are also aware of your senior’s mood swings. So be wellprepared with your proposal before making the move. One wrong step and you can ruin your chances of getting a bonus too. Ask yourself questions. Do a mock session with a friend. Be alert and ready with all possible answers to ‘Why do you need a hike?', ‘What has been your latest achievement?’, ‘Do you really deserve it?’, etc. Is the business doing well? You know your worth and you are prepared with an argument. The next big thing to check off your list is: Is the business doing well? It is logical. For instance, you never dared to ask your parents for anything more if they had a rough month. So, why should you expect the same from the company? You have to be realistic. Leverage If preparation, confidence and perseverance isn’t helping, then it’s time to play the leverage card. An offer from a competitor with a fat package will do the trick. Your senior will fear losing you to competitors and will work around a promotion or salary hike. Remember to be polite and humble while discussing the same. Don’t be rude or act pricey. Research Company policies may not allow you to look through their previous pay scales or appraisals. However, you need to do your research well. You need to figure out information by speaking to colleagues or the human resource department. You can also get them to share details on your role and responsibility and appraisal charts. This will

help strengthen your proposal with your senior. Check your new responsibilities If you get the raise, your work doesn’t stop there. You will be required to put in more hours and efforts for the company. This means you will be given a new set of goals and targets. Make sure you are ready for the same. A pay hike is not just about an increase in salary figures, it also means an increase in responsibility. Find out about your new role and prepare to step in. Don’t just sit and watch The appraisal systems and timings vary from organization to organisation. In some companies, salary hikes are discussed with employees, while in some they are announced directly. So, irrespective of the type of functioning at your workplace, you have to make the first move. You can’t just sit and expect your company to take notice. You will have to approach your senior with a request much before the procedures start. A head start will be good for you as well as your company. Plan your timing Remember how you would slyly do your homework on time and pester mom for extra television time? Well, the same rules apply here. You have to approach your senior when he/she is aware of your existence. The right time for the same is after the completion of an important task or project. Sell, don't beg You are an employee and not a pet of the company. No matter how desperate you are, you are not supposed to beg for a pay hike. You cannot use drama, guilt or emotions to convince your senior for a salary raise. It has to be completely based on your potential and worth. Look at yourself as a product and sell yourself to your senior. You have to convince him to invest in you. Ask what more can be done After all of this, if you are still not able to convince them for a fat salary hike, then maybe it’s time to stop. There is no sense in pushing it too much. That being said, your senior has to give you a solid explanation for not accepting your proposal. It has to be valid with enough reasons. Also, do take a checklist of things you should do to ensure a salary hike in the coming months. Raise vs. title Here’s one last try! In case your company sticks to the fact that the sales have been dipping and they can’t afford raising your salary, then you can suggest a change in title. Ask them to give you a higher designation that will justify your role better and encourage you to keep the good work going. yi

Interviewing with Foreign Universities

W

hether you’re a prospective student, a recent graduate or an international student looking for a placement abroad, a Skype interview is a must these days. Although the nervousness of waiting outside the room, muttering a few last minute prayers or straightening your outfit to look presentable, won’t be the same. However, knowing that your fate lies on the other side of the table or internet is daunting enough. Exam results and personal statements can only say so much about your suitability for a degree, especially on competitive courses, so your interview is your best chance at setting a good impression. When preparing for interviews abroad, simply slipping on your smartest tie and memorizing a set of interview answers may not be enough to secure a place at your desired school. On asking Professor Jane den Hollander, Vice Chancellor, Deakin University, Australia; what qualities did they look for in students besides their academic qualifications, she replied, “Enthusiasm for learning and a curiosity about new challenges. The confidence and communication skills to actively engage in discussion with peers and lecturers. The ability to engage with

Excelling in your exams and being shortlisted by the University of your dreams is a major feat. But Pearl Mathias tells you about the next big step, acing your interview

a diversity of cultures. Strong technology skills and a willingness to keep learning. Problem solving ability and also the ability to think outside the square. The ability to think critically, to analyse and discriminate, navigating the vast array of information facing us today. They should also be good at working in teams.” WHAT ARE THE MOST FREQUENT QUESTIONS ASKED? • Tell me a little bit about yourself. • What was your greatest responsibility in your work or daily life? • How would you deal with difference of opinions in a team? • How would you demonstrate your leadership qualities in situations such as the above? • Who are your role models? And what is the single most important lesson you have learned from him/her? • How would you implement this life lesson or quality in your daily life? • What is your biggest strength/ weakness? • What do you consider to be one of your biggest accomplishments?

“Enthusiasm for learning and a curiosity about new challenges. The ability to engage with a diversity of cultures and a willingness to keep learning. Problem solving ability and also the ability to think outside the square. These are a few essential qualities in a candidate", states Professor Jane den Hollander, Vice Chancellor, Deakin University. What students who interviewed with foreign universities had to say: DISHANTH KEMBHAVI who interviewed at BiTS (Business and Information Technology School) , Berlin “Know about your interviewer with a clear prior conversation or conduct a small research. Know the intricate details about the course or program you are applying to. This will help in good conversation with the interviewer and will also help you understand what and how you would benefit from the program, and which subject is most apt for you. Stay honest and say what is needed, not more. In an interview with a foreign university, one must learn to stay true to their word when asked questions which are subjective. Speak when spoken to. Especially in a Skype interview, although at times a bad internet connection will not prevent this.” SACHIN NAIK who interviewed at Deakin University Geelong Australia. “First of all the university representatives would ask you for a statement of purpose. It should explain in detail why you want to pursue the course. Then they would like to know what kind of a person you are apart from studies. What are your hobbies, accomplishments and so forth. The best way to prepare for an interview is to keep your documentation in order, know what you want to achieve, have a clear idea of the course and what the university symbolizes.” RASHI ARORA who is studying at London College of Communication “The best way to be prepared is to be really confident and as alert as to what you speak. The way you present yourself to them; if they ask you to show your work do show them, talk about it in detail so that you can keep them interested as to whatever you have done. Don't keep repeating your sentences, try to bring some good points for the things you want to talk to them, get to know the background, professors of the university which you plan to apply for. Choose the best projects, don't show too much of work, always show the rough work that you have done along with the final project that you are interested to execute to them.” SHWETA RAO* who interviewed at London Business School, INSEAD, and Stanford “Research: Read up all the material available online about the university and the program you are applying to. Understand what they are known for / good at. Tap your networks: get in touch with alumni or current students to learn about their experiences, how they went through the process, and why they decided on the

specific university. Know your story: Understand their selection criteria and pick out some stories of yourself that highlight some of those traits and most importantly, practice.” *name changed for privacy purposes

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU NEED TO KEEP IN MIND DURING A SKYPE INTERVIEW? • Wear a shirt or dress formal and groom yourself just like it’s a face-to-face interview. • Stay focused on the screen or webcam. Always maintain contact and don’t get distracted. • Be seated in a silent room without echo. • Check your headphones and keep them ready well in advance. • Put your phone on silent as you would during any other interview. • Try to talk at a normal pace and be loud and clear as bad internet connection could lead to misunderstood conversation or having to repeat yourself. • Greet and introduce yourself properly and precisely. • Don’t talk too long. Be concise and answer to the point. • Prepare yourself well in advance. Make a bullet point list that you can refer to during the interview. • Tidy your surroundings. • If you encounter an unexpected question, it is OK to take a few seconds to gather your thoughts and even use fillers while you do so, such as “that’s an interesting question, I don’t think I have considered it before. • Remember why this is important to you, it will set you up well to answer any question. • Think about how your experience (part-time jobs and volunteering for example) translates into the skills that are important for international study. • Don’t be trapped by your own frame of reference, think about why the interviewer is asking a particular question. yi

educate How To

Your First Professional

Impression

Your internet presence is the window into who you are for everyone on the other side of the web. Pearl Mathias tells you how to manage your account on the professional front

28 youthincmag.com January 2016

T

he internet today is more than just a social web for interaction. Business and profession has taken over the net as much as recreation has. However, we cannot be as free on our executive profiles as we are on social platforms. For people who haven’t seen or met you and are scouting online for a potential employee, your page will tell them everything there is to know about you, even if it’s the half-truth. WHY YOU NEED TO GIVE THIS A THOUGHT Recruiters are relying more and more on online research and many job seekers are already taking full advantage of this. This gives you even more of a reason to be pro-active and create a professional online presence to be proud of. You don’t have to exaggerate about your achievements and talents. All you need to do is be yourself and show your personality, intelligence and interests. HOW YOU CAN GET STARTED Social networks like LinkedIn and Twitter are important to join when you’re in college and when you are actively job seeking. Recruiters and hiring managers use them as sourcing tools and having an active presence can lead to getting noticed. LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network with over 300 million members in over 200 countries around the globe. Bottom line, it is the network to join if you are a professional, but you must have a good profile and a strategy. Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service you can use to stay updated in your industry, connect with industry professionals and find some of the best hidden jobs out there today. To get started, you need to build a strong student profile. Connect with friends, professors, family, mentors and important people you may have met. Look for specific groups you can join and be a part of discussions. Read up a lot and be updated on industry specific events and happenings. Browse through wanted jobs in your free time so you get an idea of what companies out there are offering. Be careful about what you tweet. Encourage replies given by other people. Always remember that everything you say and put out there is presented on a public domain. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR PROFESSIONAL ONLINE PRESENCE It doesn’t matter if you are a student, small business owner, an educator, a project manager, retail worker, manager or c-level professional, today, all of us need to regularly and comprehensively review our web presence. Here are some of the DO’s and DONT’s you need to follow while working on it.

DO: nBe aware of how others are representing you online. Monitor friends’ pictures, “tags”, and other content. nUse neutral photographs on social networking sites.

Photos taken that show detail into your personal life are not well perceived by a potential employer. nSet up a LinkedIn profile. Facebook may connect you to everyone out there, but take advantage of the professional connections that LinkedIn offers you. nUpdate your profile regularly. You need to be up-to-date on your tasks and achievements for others to notice what you have done. nBe careful about the content in your blogs. Posts that feature anything inappropriate about yourself or your employer isn’t taken in good taste. nResearch social networking sites. Know which are frequented most, which will work best for your professional image, and which offer the best privacy controls.

It doesn’t matter if you are a student, an educator or a project manager, all of us need to regularly and comprehensively review our web presence. DON’T’s nDon’t badmouth your current, previous, or future employer online. This information can be easily accessible and it won’t work in your favor henceforth. nDon’t ignore the importance of having an online presence. A lack of information can be detrimental, as someone with the same name can be mistaken to be you. nDon’t mention your job search if you are still employed and you haven’t yet informed your supervisor. nUse your discretion when tagging links to any other site or post which may be inappropriate for your employer. nDon’t forget that others can view your online friends. Employers may look to find out more about a candidate. Therefore, your friends’ profiles and pictures may influence an employer’s impression of you. nMost importantly, don’t ever lie on your online space. What you say you have done will catch up with you and you will not be able to get out of it. Once you have your online presence sorted, you can take things one step further. The new term in the business web world is ‘Careerpreneurs’. This term refers to people who manage their career like an entrepreneur and promote themselves while looking for opportunities. Remember, the people with the most online visibility are more likely to be picked up by recruiters. Even if you feel like you don’t have much time, try taking some time out to fill in your pages online. Don’t make the mistake of creating a page and leaving it half done. Your professional online presence cannot be taken lightly by you as it won’t be taken lightly by your recruiter. All the tools you need are at your disposal on the screen in front of you. Get creative, but don’t falsify. yi

T

he study of ancient and recent human past through remains is archaeology. An archaeologist presents a perspective on history and culture after drawing information from the past. The science helps us understand how people lived, the changes they made, the transformation, cultures, patterns and lifestyles. To make things simple, we interviewed Professor Vasant Shinde, Vice Chancellor, Deccan College, Pune. Professor Shinde has a BA in History from the University of Poona and a Master’s Degree (First Class) in Archaeology from Deccan College, Deemed University. He completed his PhD in Protohistoric Archaeology on Early Settlements in Central Tapi Basin from the same University. He has been teaching the Post Graduate course in Archaeology since 1982. “I started my career in 1979. During this time there was a lot of confusion about the gap between history and pre-history. This led us to discover sites in Maharashtra and North West region of the country where we surveyed a large area and brought to notice a number of sites. Now we know that the settled life in the region of Maharashtra started in 2000 BC that is 4,000 years ago. This has helped bridge the gap between the historic and pre-historic period,” says Professor Shinde who is presently working on a very prestigious research project at the largest Harappan site of Rakhigarhi in Haryana. We all are aware of the Harappan civilization and we know of their lifestyle. Unfortunately, no effort was made to convey their routines and lifestyles to common people. Professor Shinde adds, “We want to showcase Harappa’s contribution to the country and the world. There is so much to learn from them. To understand their ways, you have to understand their base. You need to go to the roots. Their achievements were not sudden. Their lifestyle, if adopted, can make a remarkable change in our living.” Archaeology helps maintain the traditional knowledge system which is dying in our country. Archaeologists are working towards, ‘How archaeology is going to be

relevant to modern society’. Professor shares that archaeology as a profession is definitely gaining popularity. In addition, the government of India has realized its importance too. Countries like Egypt and Italy has encashed on their history to boost their economy. Similarly, India has the potential to up its tourism with the help of archaeology. “This will lead to requirement for experts in the field of museology and archaeology. Students studying archaeology can suggest changes and variations to government to make things better. They can play an important role in preserving and conserving sites. They can create awareness at the grassroot level thus ensuring our history remains in safe hands.” Historical remains are spread across the country and it is not practically possible for the government to look into all of it. Here, common people need to come in huge numbers and support the cause. “The scope of archaeology is increasing and many more youngsters should come forward to be a part.” So, what has been the best and worst part of being an archaeologist? “Well, the best part is that I have been able to contribute to my country. The worst part is that I have ignored my family in the bargain. You have to lose to gain. That being said, one has to learn to balance their profession and personal life. You can’t blindly keep going. You have to draw the line.” The do's and don’ts of being an archaeologist include a keen interest of going out and exploring. You cannot just sit in the library and expect to make a discovery. Research is necessary; so is practical moving. One has to adventurous and ready to experiment. A skill in photography is important as well. It will help while documenting a site. Professor Shinde has completed 16 major research projects, generating over Rs.2 crore in research funds from both National and International agencies, in the process of which he has collaborated with scholars and institutes from around the world, from institutes such as the Universities of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in

the United States of America to Cambridge and Oxford Universities in the United Kingdom, to the International Research Center for Japanese Studies and Research Institute for Humanities and Nature (both in Kyoto, Japan), Seoul National University College of Medicine, South Korea, and so on. Presently, he has been directing a very prestigious research project at the largest Harappan site of Rakhigarhi in Haryana. Body Language Faux Pas

Are you questioning why certain things aren’t going your way even when you’re saying all the right things? Maybe it’s not about your words at all. Maybe it’s about something else. Nirva Vira talks about five body languages mistakes we all make, without realising it

I

n an interpersonal, normal interaction, our body talks a lot more than our mouth does. It certainly doesn’t help that the message it puts across is vague and is perceived differently by different people. You do not have to be saying something for your audience can easily read into it. A simple action like flexing your fingers can speak a thousand words and give out messages that can either make or break the conversation. Here are five body language mistakes we commit, but never notice.

The Lean:

While making conversation, many of us get carried away and

34 youthincmag.com January 2016

become unaware about our bodily movements. The forward and backward lean is something that sneaks in and ruins our conversation without us even realising it. Leaning slightly forward during a conversation signifies interest but a little more and you could be playing the risky terrain that is personal space. The ideology of personal space varies across cultures and one must be mindful of maintaining a decent distance from the person they are conversing with. Leaning backwards however screams blatant disinterest and disrespect. It tells the opposite person that either you do not

consider him worth listening to or are just going to counter him irrespective of what he says. When the conversation is about your responsibilities, a backward lean could make you look laid back and uncaring. To understand this little concept of leaning better, draw front and backward slanting lines on a piece of paper and concentrate on the emotions you counter while drawing each line.

The Limb Cross:

Crossing your limbs, be it your arms or ankles, is a statement your body is making. This statement, however, is not a very positive one. Crossing

your arms during a conversation makes you look defensive and while answering questions, in fight mode. If you cross your arms during a seminar or a lecture, it gives off the ‘I don’t find you worth listening to’ vibe. Crossing your ankles with your legs spread in front of you during a serious conversation is also a no-no. It makes you look disinterested and too relaxed.

The Excessive Nod:

It is a good practice to nod at people while listening to them as it shows you are interested in what they are talking and are paying attention. Although sometimes, when we are bored, tired or genuinely do not wish to pay attention to the person talking, we nod too much to make up for it. Now, you may not realize it, but the person you are talking to may find this constant nodding patronising and insulting. This puts people off and gives of a very bad impression about you. You can be assumed to be arrogant or too self-indulging, people won’t bother taking your exhaustion into account. Also, nodding too much can make you seem spineless or sycophantic. Next time when you are tired or disinterested to pay attention to the conversation, be mindful of how often you nod, you could also count to forty-five in your head before every nod.

The Constant EyeContact:

What happens when you maintain constant eye-contact? You come off as creepy. It is well known how important maintaining eye contact with your audience is, but if your audience is just one person, it is important to look away for a few seconds. Looking at the person for too long will make them feel uncomfortable and make your conversation awkward. Also remember to not look at the person’s mouth or forehead. A safe area to look at is the triangle that the eyebrows and nose make. Staring at the forehead intimidates

the person while staring at the mouth seems inappropriate.

The Fidget Mania:

Everybody is familiar with this. Either you are guilty of it or have felt the irritation it causes. Constant fidgeting is a sign of nervousness, insecurity and instability. It shows lack of confidence and trust. During a conversation, fidgeting may also be perceived as a sign of dishonesty and deceit. Constant shaking of your leg, twisting your fingers, tapping

your fingers on a table or playing with a pen are some common blunders we sub-consciously commit and overlook. In order to control your fidgeting, make sure your hands are relaxed by your side while standing and resting casually on your thighs while sitting. Keep conscious of your legs and reduce wobbling. Also, no matter how anxious you feel, do not allow your hands to go anywhere near your face. This is something many people do very often and don’t realise it. Touching your face constantly doesn’t paint a very confident and reliable picture of you, so refrain from doing this. With our usual mindless bodily actions creating space for unnecessary miscommunication, it is necessary to pay heed to the small blunders we commit. After all, it is the small details that actually end up

Use body language to your advantage: 1.Exude power, spread your presence: Simply standing with your legs a little further apart and claiming more space through gestures, builds a powerful aura around you. The more space you claim, more power you seem to command. Since power helps calm, you will also do away with your nervousness. 2.Sit straight: Sitting straight will automatically make you look and feel attentive, confident and enthusiastic. 3.Gesture while talking: Usage of gestures (in a moderated amount) involves and invites your audience into the conversation. It also gives you a more open and intelligent look.

Back in the day we longed for those Burberry coats and Gucci bags we saw the Hollywood stars don. Only the fortunate could travel across the globe and pick up that much coveted piece. Cut to 2016, the malls are lined with the the most famous luxury brands in the world. There’s good reason why the most aspirational global brands are descending on the Indian market in large numbers. Euromonitor states that, international luxury brands command only a tiny share of the Indian market, where they face strong competition from local fashion designers and jewelry makers. Indians prefer traditional dresses and jewelry but shoes, bags and watches from global brands are a hit. Indians are also developing a taste for high-end skin care as well. The number of the uber rich is rising rapidly in India with many coming from tier-2 and tier-3 cities with enormous spending power and the desire to stand alongside the wealthiest. According to a recent study released by ASSOCHAM, Indian luxury market is estimated to be worth $18 billion by 2017 from the current level of $14 billion. Seasonal Fashion, Timeless Style Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla met by chance but it didn’t take too long for them to realize that they wanted the same thing; to create impeccable fashion. The duo tells us about their journey and gives us their take on luxury fashion

38 youthincmag.com January 2016

What inspired you to collaborate with each other and create your own label? Abu and I met on 15th August 1986 at a common friend's luncheon. We struck up an instant rapport and decided then and there to combine forces. I am a natural risk-taker, Abu the reticent artist. He had been offered a space in Juhu to open his own boutique by a client, but was hesitant about doing it solo. As the afternoon progressed we knew we wanted the same thing. To create the most fabulous clothes. Clothes that carried all the hallmarks of India. Our fabulous embroideries, colours, textiles. Mata Hari became our first boutique and collection. Our parents gave us the seed money of rupees five lakhs and it was every penny they had to spare. Their complete faith in us and the freedom they gave us to follow seemingly impossible and unfashionable dreams, because fashion wasn't seen as a career choice then as it is now, is something we will be eternally grateful for. You have redefined luxury Indian wear so what would you say is USP of the AJSK label? The finest, that which is original, rare, exceptional, impeccably executed to the most minute detail. Unfortunately luxury like love is

an over-used, misused and abused word/concept. Most of what passes off as luxury is mediocre, average, and missing many links. Products and services apart, the ultimate luxury is to live Life on one's own terms. To be mistress or master of your own time and destiny. To bow before nothing except that and those whom you love. February will see the launch of our new diffusion label, ASAL by Abu Sandeep. Our mission is to make our personal brand of creativity and aesthetics more affordable, more accessible to a whole new youth oriented clientele and demographic. Because while we love Couture, we love the thought of so many more people becoming a part of our world, and ASAL is that dream brought to life in the form of fashion. What kind of marketing strategies are required to create a strong fashion brand in today’s market? For us, we let our work speak for itself. We don't advertise nor do we 'market' ourselves in any strategic or planned manner. It’s not the best business move especially since one lives in a time of instant celebrity through promotion and propaganda. We are tremendously blessed that our work has found an appreciative audience and a loyal clientele. 2015 marked 28 years in design for the two of you. Tell us about your journey so far. We believe in hard work. Blood, sweat, tears and big dreams. We have never allowed our circumstances to contain our ambition. But we haven't planned or predicted paths either. It is highly gratifying to know that we have been blessed with a wide and loyal clientele, who have loved our creations, and bought our work in both India and across the globe. It is wonderful to have your work appreciated and coveted by so many discerning people. yi

The Science of Men’s Grooming From royal barbers to the most coveted men’s grooming salon in the country, Truefitt & Hill has gone through all aspects of luxury. We speak to Mr. Krishna Gupta, Director of Truefitt & Hill India, about what luxury grooming actually entails

How did Truefitt & Hill become the royal barbers and continue the tradition onwards? William Francis Truefitt was appointed Court Wig Maker to George III in 1805, thus how the tradition began. In 2005, Truefitt & Hill is honoured by HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburg with a royal warrant. What would you say is your brand mantra today? Grooming Men for Greatness Can you tell us a little about your grooming services and product range and is it any different in India than your branches worldwide? Enriching men’s grooming lives for more than two centuries, Truefitt & Hill has provided discerning gentleman with only the finest in products and services. We accomplish this by offering consistently high quality grooming services and by developing superior grooming products that are perfect for daily use. Our offering gives men the opportunity to look and feel their very best. In terms of services we have royal shave, haircut, manicure, pedicure, facials and massages

for men. Along with this we have shaving cream, colognes, aftershaves, razor, brushes etc. You are the first company to have female barbers in your fold. How is it faring? It is great; we have received positive response from clients as well as the barbers. We are in the process to train more female barbers to have one or two in each outlet. What were the market entry challenges for the Indian market and how did you overcome them? Attrition of staff was one of the challenges. We overcame it by incentivising and with the help of internal growth prospects. Another challenge we faced was of bringing a new concept to a new market. But we could overcome it by selling the experience and getting many people to try the services and concept. We were the first company to offer luxury and high end products for men’s grooming, with a wide range dedicated towards men. It was a big challenge to increase product sales initially, but once people started experiencing the quality of the products in the service and purchasing it immediately, we could overcome this one too. What are your views on the Indian grooming industry? The Indian grooming industry is evolving constantly with several new brands and concepts coming in. Men have become more aware about grooming and they take the time and effort to go out and get groomed. It is an extremely fast growing segment with great scope throughout the country. What would you say are the most important grooming tips and must haves for our young readers? Always stay well groomed for a great impression in any situation! yi

Prime Time

Right from its origins almost 250 years ago, the inventor of the automatic or selfwinding watch, Perrelet has consistently cultivated an avant-garde spirit teamed with complete mastery of the elaboration of its timepieces. Karan Jain, Regional Manager at Perrelet SA, tells us about their collections, the competition and what sets these timekeepers apart

40 youthincmag.com January 2016

Being an established horologist since 1777 what do you say essentially defines luxury watches? Luxury watches are defined by two traits – craftsmanship and service. Beyond the utility of an instrument that tells the time, customers are buying into a brand’s pedigree, name and prestige, as well as a higher, more personalized level of service. Once you buy a luxury watch, your relationship with the brand has just begun. One of your most popular collections has been the Turbine collection. What was the idea behind the same? With the Turbine, we wanted a watch that was unique and immediately recognizable. The Turbine mechanism was inspired by the turbine fan in aircraft engines. Implementing it was a challenge, but our engineers were able to design a watch that successfully integrated a free-rotating high-speed titanium turbine with Perrelet’s industryleading automatic movement. The results are there for everyone to see – the Turbine collection has become symptomatic with the quality and innovation that watch connoisseurs expect from a brand like Perrelet. The luxury watch category can be a tough one, with limited brands and a domination of historic models. How does Perrelet compete in this arena? The luxury watch marketplace is definitely a busy one, but there is always room for growth and improvement. Perrelet is one of the few surviving brands from the golden era of watchmaking

innovation from 1750 to 1800. It was during this time that miniaturization of horological processes made rapid progress and technical innovations – like the tourbillon, BreguetOvercoil and, of course, the automatic – saw the light of day. Today, Perrelet is popular because of its unique style and modern innovations. All our watches contain in-house movements with mechanisms both designed and manufactured by us. We are the only watchmaker in the world to make double-rotor watches, and we continue to be an innovator in the industry. Your Turbine Sheriff timepiece is said to pay tribute to your founder, Abraham- Louis Perrelet. What makes this watch so special? The Turbine XL Sheriff was a one-off piece made specially for the Only Watch charity auction 2015. Only Watch auctions unique timepieces from various brands to raise money for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy. It has been doing this since 2005 to great support from the horological community. The Sheriff was a fun take on the current Turbine XL. We replace the turbine with a sheriff’s star and stamped the words “Wanted: Dead or Alive” above the name of the founder of our company, Abraham-Louis Perrelet. It’s a fun reference to old American westerns, as well as acknowledging the original Perrelet. What can we expect from Perrelet in the coming years? The last year has been one of consolidation for Perrelet – where we have streamlined and fine-tuned our collection. While the Turbine has been a great success for us, we are now focused on the future and the next big technical innovation. What our customers can always expect from us are cutting-edge, avantgarde watches that are a joy to own and wear. yi

All That Glitters

Did you start out with an aim in mind? Did you ever think that you would be referred to as the ‘jeweler to the stars’ today? I didn’t get into my profession to make money or to be successful. I got into it because I was very passionate about it. I believe that if you do something, you do it all or nothing. You put in your best and let your work speak for itself. I didn’t have any agenda to be the ‘jeweler to the stars’ or a brand to reckon with when I started out. Even today, I’m still learning. I put in more than 100% and those efforts are recognized by people and it shows in my work. I just love to create, I live to design. For me pictures speak more than words, it’s very important for me to depict what I’m saying visually. I’m an extreme personality, eccentric to the core, unpredictable

was growing up, my mum always used to tell us to look for goodness in people and beauty in things. Don’t look for what you don’t have and focus on what you do have. When I see something that attracts me, be it nature, colors, architecture or any form that captivates me, I just view it in a magical perspective. All of us think alike, but the way we perceive things and interpret it is what makes us all different. Any form that can hold my attention for more than a minute can transform into something beautiful. You’ve come a long way, what were some of the challenges you faced along your journey? The greatest challenge I faced was learning the hard way. Contrary to what people believe that hailing from a Bollywood family, my parents must have set me up to start my own

and somewhere in all that chaos, I find myself. But at the same time, I’m extremely focused and disciplined. You have to be eccentric to be creative and you need the discipline to come up with something beautiful. Where do you derive your inspiration from? I’m a creative person. I like viewing beauty in everything I see. When I

store and do my own thing. But the truth is, I worked my way to the top. My father always believed that an education was the best legacy he could leave me and I admire and respect him for that. I struggled for many years of my life and it took me 18 years to start my own store. I had to put everything I made into it. I also learned a lot along the way. This industry is very closed; they don’t encourage outsiders to get into it. I had a few bad incidences with people but every roadblock in my way was a stepping stone to further success. yi

Somewhere between looking for the good in people and finding magic in the ordinary, she designed her way to the top. Farah Khan Ali tells us why you need to love what you do above all else

How would you describe your design journey? I remember from a very young age I had definite opinions about art and design, and when I look back on it, I find it amusing that at that age I was so opinionated. Growing up in the hustle and bustle of the city life and in the midst of all the symbols, vibrancy, heritage and pride in Bombay, I started from a young age working with textiles in my family business ‘Zeba’, absorbing the inspirations that would later inform my designs. I went on to work with several renounced brands

On the rocks

The luxury single malt company from India, Amrut Distilleries, recently completed a decade. We speak to the Executive Director, Rakshit N. Jagdale about putting themselves on the world map

When did the vision to create Amrut (Fusion) Single Malt come to fruition? We began with distilled malt whiskey in 1798 to use it in our branded whiskey portfolio. It was in 2001 that I went overseas to do my MBA and that is where the idea of the Single Malt Whiskey took shape. I was asked to do a project as part of my dissertation for the university and I showcased a live project report to the company and the board approved of it in 2002. In August 2004, Amrut launched India’s first indigenously distilled, matured and bottled malt whiskey. What was the thought behind launching this fusion single malt overseas first and then bringing it to India? We wanted to get the accolades overseas first and when the word of mouth got to India, we then planned to introduce it in our country. It was a deliberate marketing strategy that we undertook. Is the declining demand for whiskey in the Indian market of

serious concern to the brand? The overall sprits market in India is stagnant as far as growth is concerned. The entire spirit market growth has plateaued out in India. The entire spirit market is growing at a rate of 2.5 to 3% annually. There is more stagnation of growth where the mid range whiskeys are concerned. Whereas we see a small bit of growth happening in the scotch and whiskey segments. Basically people are graduating up the segment to premium whiskeys and scotch and hence we are witnessing a premiumization of single malt whiskeys in India. Can you tell us about the ‘Amrut 10 Year Old Greedy Angels’ limited edition which sold out within 2 days of its release and some of your other limited edition best sellers? We had just 2 casks maturing in our warehouse for 10 years and we bottled 320 bottles out of them. The stocks were presold even before we bottled them. Our other limited editions are Amrut Kadambham,

We do not see any difference between Indian and overseas consumers as both are very knowledgeable about their whiskies Amrut Portonova, Amrut Two Continents, Amrut Herald and Amrut Sherry Finish. Are there any new innovations for the limited edition series on the cards? If so, can you tell us about them? Nothing new planned for this year. We have close to about 18 single malt variations in our portfolio. We have to benchmark and keep up a consistent profile on the quality and that is a challenge in itself. What are your favorite malt whiskey brands and why? Glenfiddish 15 yo / 18yo, Lagavullin 16 year old, Laphroigh 18 yo, Macallan 12 yo and Bunahaveen 18 yo. yi

Whatever Floats Your Boat If you think flying business class is the best as travel can get, try setting aboard a yacht which has been sailing its way through the luxe market. Riyhad Kundanmal, Sales and Marketing Director of Ocean Crest Marine tells us about this much sought after form of recreation

Can you tell us a little more about the Indian yacht industry? The yachting industry is in the nascent stages here in India. For the industry to become an "actual" industry, infrastructure is the key. With a country of over 12,000 kilometers of inland and ocean coastline, we may be one of the few countries that do not have connectivity by waterways, considering that it could well become one of the cheapest ways of transportation with no heavy expenses on roadways, bridges etc. With infrastructure in place, breakwaters, marinas and sewage marine falls, India would not only become a tourist destination for sea goers, but it would bring in foreign revenue, ensure water security, jobs for the locals and put India on the yachting destination whereby Super Yachts too could make India a hub like Monaco. 2010 saw a lot of bankers and corporates being the consumers for yachts, as opposed to 2008 when the consumers were primarily industrialists. What is the consumer trend as of 2015? With the world economy at an all time low, coupled with the INR/ USD being affected, not to mention the raised import duty structure on boats and yachts, the trend over the last few years has not been very receptive towards necessities. Boats that were once considered a rich man’s toy, have not become a necessity for some to get from place to place due to the driving distances and traffic snarls. With the current trend 'Make in India', our company Ocean Crest Marine shall be dwelling into the manufacturing of suitable high speed boats for transportation and recreation and by 2016 we are hopeful that we would be able to have our brand on the water.

What are the most important facets to consider while buying a yacht? The builder’s reputation, materials, design, fuel economy, range, sea stability, reliability, engineering, amenities and certification are some of the facets to get into when considering a suitable boat or yacht. The after sales service is another key component, which must be looked into as not many companies have their own marine workshop and product display center, which in the boating industry is the key considering the logistics involved when dealing with boats and yachts. As a brand, what is your market strategy for the India and how do you see it growing? Ocean Crest Marine is optimistic that after this economic downturn the economy will see a change in the wind and at that time the waters would become the key to transportation. With the country connected by waterways, the government themselves have realized

For the industry to become an "actual" industry, infrastructure is the key. With a country of over 12,000 kilometers of inland and ocean coastline, we may be one of the few countries that do not have connectivity by waterways the importance of its usage. Plans are underway to develop marinas for the convenience of the citizens. Our strategy is to showcase our product within our exclusive showroom for boats and yachts in Mandwa (the only one in India) and make the process and decision of buying a boat as simple as buying a car. See it, feel it, like it and sail away in it. yi

he luxury industry is on an all time rise in India right now. With the industry being just about a decade old in the country right now, the time is ripe for expansion. Why should you study luxury management? India has been reported to have the world’s fastest-growing population of millionaires right now. The number of millionaires in the country has grown from 196,000 to 250,000 in the past year. That is a 27% rise as compared to 2014. Wealth-X, which is the global authority on wealth intelligence, predicts as much as 437,000 Indiabased millionaires by 2018, and the number to have doubled by 2023. They also note that the key indicators for India’s potential economic growth are its new reformist government, well-defined legal system, and the immense rise of entrepreneurship in the country. Even in times of financial uncertainty, the growth rate of the Indian luxury industry has been tremendous. China is considered to be the largest growing market for luxury brands in Asia, and though India hasn’t taken over the title just yet, the diminishing sales in the Chinese luxury markets is a noteworthy detail to consider. The Indian luxe market is currently estimated at a whooping USD 7.8

46 youthincmag.com January 2016

billion, and is set to grow at a staggering rate of 86% in constant value terms between 2013 and 2018. With the massive list of positive statistics, there is a huge need for managers who have an in-depth idea of the trends of the luxe industry. Armed with specialised management degrees in luxury, hordes of students are flocking to this new career option. What segments can you pursue luxury brand management in? The need for luxury-educated brand managers increased exponentially as luxury permeated across various segments like cars, fashion, wines, chocolates, spa services, jewellery, leather accessories, watches and more. A December 2011 survey report by Luxury Connect states that a trained manpower of 1.76 million would have been required by last year in the luxe field. What more, luxury brands have started spreading their operations to newer countries. A brand manager with a large luxury house is almost like the face of the brand in India or abroad, for example the Asia Pacific region or the Gulf area. A luxury brand manager is also required to continually question and redefine the lines of luxury. This is done by keeping the changing times, perceptions and tastes of the region's public in mind.

Your son has to maintain consistently good academic performance since the class 10th board exam aggregates are the primary determinant of his choice of college/ school/ subjects, etc. At plus two level, choice of subjects must include physics, chemistry, mathematics and English to lay the academic base for further professional training in computer science. Studying computer science as an elective subject isn’t necessary. Taking the engineering route would be the obvious one after class 12th, for which he must gear up during plus two for handling the engineering entrance exams. The rigour, discipline and determination that he must bring to his studies in plus two and alongside for the entrance exams will set the pace.

The focus of the application has to be you, your further education and life goals. Academics matter, but colleges look for a balanced personality with involvement and engagement in extracurricular and community activities. Colleges are looking for somebody with substance, someone who is comfortable and free enough to be real. Engage in those activities and initiatives for which you feel a personal interest or for which you can learn to care, which may be sports, community activities, dramatics, music, photography, etc. There is no ‘ideal’ candidate or application, so introspect and pick out what and how much you can handle successfully and effectively, because if you spread yourself too thin, it will show.

SPECIALISATION I would like to apply for MBA abroad, but am not sure what specialization to choose. I would prefer that I get a placement, so does my choice of specialization affect that? Poppy You would have at least three years of work experience after graduation when you are applying for MBA abroad. The nature of your experience, sectoral/ industry related or functional, and your long-term career plans would have a bearing on your choice of specialization. In fact, your choice of b-schools would be determined accordingly, I presume. However, job markets being dynamic and easily changeable, you need to remain adaptable to opting for a specialization that your b-school considers the best foil for your resume in the context of placement prospects as an international candidate.

Ram Redux – The Eternal Relevance of the Epic God – by bestselling author Amish Tripathi:

great stardom comes responsibility’ before contradicting it by saying that ‘his own (Kher’s) political preference shouldn’t matter to the audience’.

A serious 41-year-old author who writes about Indian mythology with relevance to current times, Amish Tripathi, certainly does not look the part with his childlike demeanour. His new book title, Scion of Ikshvaku, is apt as it not only lives up to the storyline but also somewhere defines Amish’s place as an established and widely loved author. He announced that there are going to be 5 books in his new much-awaited Ramchandra series. He recalled that his inspiration for this series was when he was approached by a lady at a similar event, few years ago, who claimed to hate Lord Ram for being blindly righteous, for not looking out for his family, for insulting Sita, and that's when he decided to write a book bringing to light the various aspects of Ram. He explained how nobody, not even Gods, can be all black or white, thus hinting that Raavan might be seen in a different light altogether in his upcoming books.

ust like every year, the Times Lit Fest 2015 too was a place of intellectual splendour and fabulous conversations with literature elitists. Here are some of the talks we found interesting: Whose Tolerance Is It Anyway - Anupam Kher in conversation with Nalin Mehta: Speaking about a much talked about word and it’s widely varying definition, Anupam Kher delivered a talk worth being heard. The purpose of the talk was to provide an answer to the raging debate over intolerance but more importantly an answer mocking everybody else who spoke against his motion; his motion being: India is a tolerant country. His favourite topic seemed to be Aamir Khan’s infamous statement about India's intolerance. He blamed Khan of spreading fear instead of hope, with reference to the Muslim cab driver in Chennai who felt scared now that people of Aamir Khan’s stature were thinking of leaving the country. He warned Aamir by saying that ‘with

educate City Buzz When the Times Lit Fest come a’calling, us literary enthusiasts have to respond. Nilanjana Dutta covers the event and talks about some of the major talks that caught our eye Laxmi or Sarawati – The Nation Wants to Know – by Devdutt Pattanaik: With the skills of a storyteller from the days when people used to sit under banyan trees roped in the narrative, Devdutt Pattanaik had the audience hooked right from the beginning. He started with making a personal connect with the audience with the mention of his mother’s demise and dedicating the talk to her. He began with explaining the difference between Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati as Lakshmi being the aim while Saraswati is seen as a means to achieve that aim, as we are always told, “Padhai karo toh acchi naukari milegy”. He provided food for thought with insightful concepts like, “Does the poet create a poem or is it the poem that turns man into a poet?” and with stellar advice, “You can’t control anything, even though you feel like you can." But what really stole the show was his subtle remark about the religious temperament as he said, “The best way to destroy a concept is to worship it.” yi

The World of Jockeying

The dream of becoming a DJ, RJ, or VJ is not an uncommon one. Madhura Sansare delves into the lives of these pop & youth icons to tell you more about their fabulous lives

H

ave you ever wondered what it would be like to live the life of a jockey? No we don’t mean the horse-riding ones. We mean the ones that get to be on air and do cool stuff. Whether it be a radio jockey, a disc jockey, or even the long lost video jockey; these people always seemed to have the coolest jobs ever. If you are a 90’s kid, we can guarantee you, like us, wanted to be one of them at some point in your life. So what exactly goes into the world of jockeying? And how is it that such seemingly different job profiles all seem to have the same kind of vibe? The world of jockeying saw a revolution around the 2000s. Radio in particular, saw a sea of change. But today, radio is no longer what it used to be. From the sober sounds of Akashvani, radio has metamorphosed into the non-stop lively, witty monologue of new players such as Radio Mirchi, Red FM, Radio City, etc. FM Radio had already bought in a brand new style of radio presentation, making it interactive and a lot more fun. While RJs took over the radio world, it was all about the VJs on TV. With the advent and rapid rise in popularity of music channels like MTV and Channel V, the youth got new idols to look up to like Nikhil Chinappa, Cyrus Broacha and Cyrus Sahukar. Not only did they become pop idols, but they also went on to become household names. Opportunities grew not only for RJs and VJs, but for jockeying in general. All you needed to become a part of this world was the gift of gab and a passion for music and entertainment. All work, some play Music jockeys broadly work in three areas—as DJs, RJs and VJs. But even as they fall under the same category, their aspects of music are very different from each other. Disc Jockeys: A disc jockey or a DJ is someone who is mostly seen in discotheques and nightclubs, banging up the tunes for the crowd. They typically play from a selection of music that’s in tune with the rhythm of the audience. But that’s not all. It is not uncommon to see DJs at everything from private marriage celebrations to music concerts. They are quite literally your musical fix for everything. Video Jockeys: Though we haven’t seen them for a long time now, VJs were the ‘It’ crowd of the youth back in the days. They used to host TV shows and live music programmes. The success of a VJ depended not only on how well they could speak, but also on how presentable they were. Radio Jockeys: The coming of FM ushered in a new genre of the radio jockeys, or RJs. Though their job is only to anchor music shows on the radio, while playing requests from listeners and interviewing guests, it is not uncommon to find them heavily involved in social causes due to the immense number of listeners they have a following with.

Spin That Disc Parties and music encompass a DJ’s world, but the experience is far more than that. World-renowned DJ Bosco tells us more about his life as a DJ You started your journey as a DJ way back in the 90’s. What would you say got you into DJing? What was your inspiration back then? It all started in college. I firmly remember that moment in my early college days. We had this afternoon jam session which I had happened to go for. I just kept watching this guy behind the console plying music and making the whole crowd dance with his tunes. It was at that moment that I thought I should this try too. The impact that I got from that Disc Jockey was so immense that I knew instantly that this was something I wanted to do as well. What would you say is the most important aspect to consider while performing for a new crowd? I’ve been a freelancer for the last 20 years of my career, out of which for the last 15 years, I have personally been doing my own thing as a DJ for private parties. Through my experience, I have gained this power where I can read people’s mind and soul. Being spontaneous is my forte, but it was through reading the crowd’s tastes that I was successful

Your favourite song: How Deep is your Love – Calvin Harris Your favourite video: Lean On- Major Lazer Favourite genre of music: Pure House music What do you love doing besides your job? Spending time with my family, especially my kids What has been the craziest request you received from your audience? Someone from the audience at a corporate event asked me to play a Tamil song once. I played Apdi Pode Pode which turned out to be a Madrasi song, but he was happy at the end of it.

in being able to play for any given crowd in any part of the globe. Which is your favourite genre to perform? Being an old school DJ, I have always liked retro from late 70s to 90s. I love playing this genre as you can make anyone of any age dance to it. But if you ask me my favourite

genre now, it would be pure House music. It just gives me lots energy to play and make the crowd dance till the end of the night. You have been around the globe. Have you seen any specific crowd preferences in musical tastes across various countries? Yes, I have seen various tastes in various countries. For e.g. In Spain, there are so many Indians that besides playing Bollywood, like Spanish music, which is also one of my personal favourites. In America RNB, hiphop and Hip House are the popular genres while in Asia, we mostly have a mixed genre ranging from commercial to EDM and Bollywood is like a must-play. What would you say has been your most memorable experience till date? I try to make all of my gigs memorable because I put a lot of hard work in to make it memorable for my clients. For me personally though, my most memorable experience has been the moment when I played for Abhishek Bachchan’s sangeet ceremony and made whole film industry dance till wee hours. I remember Mr Bachchan coming over to me and hugging me, saying that I was right person for tonight’s entertainment; I was so overjoyed when I heard that from him. I can honestly say it was the best moment in my career as a DJ so far. Do you think it is necessary to go through training institutes to become a DJ? Yes, any newcomer now has to go through a proper training to become a DJ. It helps you gain momentum and confidence and learn the basics of DJing. With the new rage of EDM artists becoming popular world over, do Indian DJ’s have the same potential? To be honest, I’m not an EDM fan. I’ve always respected pure House music. But I’m very happy to hear about these few Indian DJs out there who have even gone ahead to enter Beatport charts in EDM music. 2016 January youthincmag.com 53

Radio Life RJing is not all fun and games. Hrishikesh Kannan, popularly known as Hrishi K., producer and radio host for 94.3 Radio One tells us what it’s all about You made a shift from a Bollywood RJ to and English music RJ. How has this transition been? Actually life comes full circle. It is a little known fact that I actually started my career in the 90s doing English/International radio. My first radio presentation job was at the Times FM when the government first opened the airwaves to private players. When the big radio boom happened, I moved to regular Bollywood heavy, desi CHR (current hit radio) format stations as that is what seemed popular at that time. Having grown up with Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar blaring out of my speakers along with Sting, Bryan Adams, The Doors and Led Zeppelin is what helped in my move across the genres of music. And now, in the fourth year of Radio One’s international format, I’m back doing what I started my career with! So that’s the story, morning glory! Can you tell us about the most 54 youthincmag.com January 2016

popular content of your show and your inspirations for it? Every day is unique – it’s a 5 hour daily show so a world of content is covered. The idea is to curate conversations for listeners that can add value to their lives. We start off on Monday with my favourite part of the week, the finance show where we simplify numbers and financial concepts. Come Tuesday I talk current affairs and city happenings - anything from the Sheena Bora murder case to storm water drains. Everything from gadget and app reviews, food trails and book reviews, movie comparisons and backpack travel take up the rest of the week. Apart from all of this, we also cover inspirational people for the corporate, media, sports and entertainment worlds. Personalities like Adi Godrej, Gautam Singhania, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Salman Rushdie, Chetan Bhagat, Amish have all been on air with me. Anu Aga, Flavia Agnes, Bittu Sehgal; people who make a difference to society have also shared their life and times with me. Would you say being spontaneous is a prerequisite of becoming a radio jockey? Which other qualities would one need to be a great RJ? Constantly reading and keeping abreast of what’s happening in the city and world and listening to music - in particular the format that you are working in. Work hard and create a foundation and then use that knowledge to improvise intuitively on the spot/mike. Don't you think radio has become too commercial with heaps of brand activations and is taking away from pure music? There is space for all formats - pure music or pure talk or a hybrid of music and talk like we do at Radio One - the trick is to do it right. In fact, brand activations, if done intelligently help decongest the inventory of ads and add value to mainstream programming.

Where Are All The VJs? In a time where VJs have almost disappeared, we talk to VJ Gaelyn Mendonca about what VJing was all about, and what happened to them You won the MTV VJ Hunt in 2013. Tell us more about the entire experience. The VJ Hunt was amazing in every way for me. It was a great way for me to go out there, be myself and be appreciated for it. I made some great friends through the process and I'm eternally grateful for that. What prompted you to participate in the VJ Hunt in 2013, by when VJs had become quite scarce? Much like most people my age, I've grown up watching MTV. I've even tried calling Nikhil several times on Select. I loved the fact that VJs were these young, energetic, uber cool people; so different from everyone that was on television at that time. So when I got the opportunity to give it a shot, it was only natural that I went all out. What would you say is the most challenging thing about being a VJ? If you're a good VJ, no challenge is big enough. A host of VJs are known to host events or reality TV shows. What is the reason behind this correlation?

Your favourite song: Stay by Rihanna/ Latch by Sam Smith. Your favourite video: Run the world (Girls) by Beyonce. Favourite genre of music: Blues and Bollywood. What do you love doing besides your job? Baking! I make really good healthy treats. What has been the craziest request you received from your audience? To do my Rakhi Sawant impersonation at a formal live gig.

The thing that separates VJs from scripted TV anchors is spontaneity and the fact that they are more relatable. The audiences like a person who they feel they could actually have a conversation with. This is why VJs end up hosting events and reality shows a lot more than others.

VJs are not as popular today as they were in earlier days. What, according to you is the reason for that? Well that's not entirely true. We still have a lot of people rooting for us. But having said that, the programming on music channels has changed immensely which most definitely has led to VJs not being as out there as they used to be. Music channels across the country becoming more entertainment-related and less music-oriented. What is your take on this? Personally, music trumps everything for me. However, the audiences viewing music channels have changed immensely, and so the network is trying to maintain a balance between both music and entertainment. I'm just glad that we still go out there and make shows like Coke Studio, Bloc Party and Unplugged which keep the music alive. What advice would you give you an aspiring VJ? Be yourself and be confident. You're good enough. You always were. 2016 January youthincmag.com 55

Relationships Over The Net

I

Technology and the Internet have changed a lot of things in our world, including human communication and relationships. Janvi Manchanda tells us more about what virtual relations are all about

n the time of smart phones and internet, where the world has become a global village, virtual relationships have become very common. We normally come across news articles on people who met on the internet and end up getting married and we also come across articles about cyber crimes.

What are virtual relationships? Virtual - Not physically existing as such but made by software to appear to do so. A virtual relationship literally means having a relationship with someone in the world that physically does not exist but is made to appear so by a software.

Types: 1. Online dating: The most common type of virtual relationship is online dating. Today finding someone to get into a virtual or real relationship is as easy as finding a red dress on an e-commerce website. People use apps and websites like Tinder, TrulyMadly, Fling, Zoosk, OkCupid, Inner Circle, DoingSomething, Hinge, Muddy Match, Happn, and Coffee meets Bagel, among others for online dating. But how can a relationship that does not exist in the physical world be considered as a real relationship? Then there are websites like Shaadi.com, Bharatmatrimony.com, Simplymarry.com and Jeevansathi. com which help people find brides and grooms while sitting at home! 2. Virtual sex: It refers to internet or cyber sex. Exchanging sexually explicit messages, pictures & videos over computers or cell phones is called virtual sex. It is not uncommon for people to send sexually explicit messages to each other. Sexting, phone sex, video sex, etc are very common today. 3. Social Networking: In a time like today, when people don’t have time to make new friends in person or meet up with their friends and catch up on old times, people depend on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc to make new friends and interact with old ones. 4. Online Gaming: People who love gaming tend to play games on the net and end up meeting many anonymous gamers. 5. Chatrooms & Forums: There are many chatrooms & forums where people post their issues and get responses from random strangers on the internet. Forums not only are a very good platform for discussion, but they’re also a very good platform to get reliable information and guidance.

56 youthincmag.com January 2016

6. Business partnerships and professional relationships: Companies and institutions that have partnerships or dealings with people who are in a different city or country use the internet in an efficient way to connect with them when a face to face meeting isn’t possible. These institutions and companies maintain healthy and professional virtual relationships with people via the internet.

Pros of virtual relationships: 1. Stress Free: Virtual relationships are relatively stressfree as they do not require much effort from people. At a click of a button one can connect with the other person in seconds making it easy to sustain a virtual relationship. 2. No intimacy: In a virtual relationship, the lack of physical presence or touch makes it less intimidating. It can be very easy to flirt with someone over text than in person. It can be very comforting when it comes to professional relationships because negotiating over email might be easier than negotiating face to face. 3. Less Conflict: People tend to fight less when in a virtual relationship as they don’t get complete and verified information. 4. Identity Protection: People have a choice of protecting their identity on internet by using privacy setting or by not giving the correct information or by creating fake profiles. 5. Time Saving: Virtual relationships are time saving. At a click a person can connect with the other person via the computer or the phone and communicate for as long as they want to as it allows them to multi-task.

Cons of virtual relationships: 1. No physical presence: Sometimes physical presence is very important. Two people can date each other via internet but at some point they will need physical presence which is not always possible and brings the relationship to an end. 2. Identity issues: Information on internet is not always verified. A person can be whoever they want to be. In real life someone may not be as fun loving and

confident as they appear on their social networking profile. This sometimes leads to identity issues. 3. Addictive: Virtual relationships can be addictive. People get so used to it that it becomes difficult for them to meet & communicate with people in real life, and they tend to get uncomfortable with physical contact and lose confidence. Sometimes it also becomes impossible for them to handle a real life relationship. 4. Sham people: The choice of protecting one’s identity also has a drawback. It gives sham people and fraudsters the freedom to fake their identities and give out wrong information and cheat people on the net. The girl that you’re talking to may not be the girl she says she is or she may not even be a girl! It could be a fake profile made by some boy to trouble some girls or to stalk someone. 5. Cyber crimes: It is very important for us to be extremely careful about the information we share with people on internet. Every day we come across many cyber bullying, cyber stalking and cyber fraud cases. We also come across many cases where personal information, pictures or videos given out to one wrong person turns out to be harmful for the other person. Cyber crimes are very common. In the end what matters is how carefully you use the internet to connect with people. One wrong person and one wrong move can destroy people and at the same time it helps professional people to make money and get more business. How virtual relationships end depends on us, crime or love; it’s all about how careful we are. Be safe. Be smart. Be virtual. yi

Nathan William Stevens, 20 years old, S.Y.B.Com, Vidya Bhavan College of Commerce, Pune It is the physical presence that provides relational, psychological and physiological effects on people which virtual relationships cannot provide. Our thinking changes in the presence of another person and their behaviour. What does ‘I love you’ mean in a virtual relationship? What do you love? How do you love a person you don’t even know properly is the biggest question here and how in today’s time we trust our ‘vibes’ or ‘instinct’ and learn that being physically present can speak the unspoken?

e wants me back, should I risk it?” asked my school friend Monisha, on getting back after a bad break up and rather a public one too. “I’m thinking of getting back with him.”Getting back with someone you were in a bitter battle some years ago is not something I’ve ever thought easy. Of course you have the famous Hollywood couple Liz Taylor with Richard Burton. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton came together after devastating their celebrated marriages only to have such a tempestuous marriage that they divorced and then came back to remarry because they couldn’t live without each other. Only to repeat their history of volatile warring that delighted the

paparazzi and sold film magazines but drove each other to alcoholic binges of hurt and rage. They had married each other twice, and when Liz grew older she had said that had Richard lived, she was sure they would have married again. Having personally seen a rebounding or two I set about finding if there are indeed possibilities on making the second time around quite a winner. “I didn’t learn from my mistake, he's broken my faith again, after promising and promising it won't happen again” I’ve heard that often from my girlfriends. It is said that promises are made to be broken. It is likely to be

true in defective relationships. People never change, may to some extent be true. In my mind there are two simplistic ways of looking at getting back after a broken relationship with your ex. One is that if the bitterness and temper is the cause, the pattern is not easy to change. The second view for the cause is that once you have made mistakes, parted and lost each other you may then become more careful about being hurtful and be consciously caring about each other so that you avoid doing things that created the parting in the first place. The barriers to success are self-imposed First of all, a separation is a grave step that is taken as perhaps the last resort, then getting back together is an

even more serious consideration. Certainly a brave step and not for the faint-hearted, but then if there's a wish then there needs to be a will. Ideally it sounds like all’s well that ends well for many reasons, but one needs deep thought and perhaps help from all around you. The familiarity between partners works both ways, conducive to greater success the second time around after the earlier mistakes and aberrations, or disaster prone from rancorous earlier memories that will not go away. It’s not "one size fits all" with cases of successful reunions and not. If one is very forgiving it is workable,

however if one clings to the bitterness and rancour that brought about the divide and the "you did this and you did that" syndrome then it’s not a workable relationship and it is better to go your separate ways. It could also be that one got back out of loneliness, not for the correct reasons, or then the hurt or betrayal was too painful and runs too deep. Where there is pain and past angst unable to be swept away with love and affection it is often better to move on and make a new start. Only when you close one door can you allow others to open. Yet statistics suggest that when a couple that has broken up comes back there is approximately a sixty seven percent success rate. Reuniting with the help of a counsellor is advisable as you are both then equipped with guidance and some mental rulebook to make it work. You came together to make it work after all, especially if there is a long term relationship on the cards. Things you should do differently The success rate of reunited relationships is also for reasons like ‘the absence which made the heart fonder’ to quote a cliché. Secondly you went your separate ways and found that the grass on the other side of the hedge is not really better. You had created the right fit with your boyfriend, lover or spouse and yet you let it go because you took each other for granted. Also the second time you have more care and respect because you realize that the factor beyond the attraction, the physical aspects, even the companionship, that will stand the test of endurance in the long run is mutual respect. Keeping in mind the "different strokes for different folks" idea, reuniting with your estranged partner works out to be a great comfort zone if the couple are open to each other’s views, to listening, to empathising, understanding and most of all, making it work. A formal or informal contract of resolutions and most importantly a large-hearted endeavour to forgive and forget works well. Having separated, getting back together is idealistically a good idea often because of your friends and family involved and so much past investment that endures and makes things conducive to new beginnings. The priority has to be harmony at almost all costs. Also, sometimes a couple may be hasty and be caught in their decisions or maybe over concerned advisers take sides and urge a separation. Then, when things take on a more reasonable perspective, and extraneous influences are put aside, maybe reuniting is a great idea. It is ultimately not about whose fault it is, (which may not be totally one-sided) but how much mature sincerity the partners bring to making it work. Sensitivity to the other, which is very different to the counterproductive oversensitivity, addressing the reasons for the break up and a will to try and bring mutual understanding that can make a happy and permanent relationship. yi

High and Hypoxic Did you know that the air we breathe plays a major role in fitness regimes and the proper moderation can lead to various health benefits. Read about how Altitude Training incorporates this technique

A

thletes and fitness freaks alike are competitive about their health, diet and performance. We are constantly trying to grab hold of the next best thing in the market that will make us fitter. Scores of people make it a point to attend either a yoga or zumba class or maybe even visit a gym before heading to work. Apart from the usual dips and lifts, the new fad in our gym’s today is Altitude Training.

What is Altitude Training? Altitude training, also known as

66 youthincmag.com January 2016

hypoxic training, involves exercising in, living in or otherwise breathing oxygen reduced air for the purpose of improved athletic performance, pre-acclimatization to altitude and / or physical wellness which involves weight loss, better management of asthma, better management of diabetes among others. Earlier, individuals had to travel to or live at high elevations to obtain the benefits of Altitude Training. However, gyms have eliminated this hassle by allowing high altitude training facilities to

be set up anywhere, even at sea level. Through the production of normobaric hypoxic or oxygen reduced air, simulation of altitudes of up to 5000 meters can be achieved. As a result, athletes, fitness enthusiasts and health conscious individuals worldwide can take advantage of the benefits associated with altitude training while at sea-level or otherwise.

When did it first begin? While we’ve heard much about altitude training in recent years,

its use as a means of improving athletic performance is not new. Indeed, it’s been used by coaches and athletes for more than 40 years with much success. Wikipedia states that the study of altitude training was heavily delved into

and that short events would not see significant negative changes. This was attributed not only to less resistance during movement due to the less dense air but also to the anaerobic nature of the sprint events. Ultimately, these games

air are 20.9% (eg. Mumbai) while in the Simulated Altitude Room one is training at approx 2500 mtrs. or so where the oxygen levels are approx 15.3% and hence due to this there are certain physiological changes that take place in one’s body which help the client burn upto 200% more calories by training at Simulated Altitude, so it is a much smarter way of training.”

Benefits of Altitude Training n200% more calorie burn nIncreased Weight Loss due to increase in metabolic rate nImproved Cardiovascular health nImproved Sleep Cycle nStrengthened Immune System nSlow down the ageing process nImproved Oxygen Utilization nImproved aerobic performance nPre-acclimatization (before travelling to area of high altitude) nElite Athletic Training nType 2 Diabetes Control nAsthma Control

Mechanisms involved in this training “When an individual trains in a low oxygen, or hypoxic environment, their body struggles to produce enough energy and hence adapts, by increasing the number of red blood cells or altering muscle metabolism. These adaptations allow the body to utilize oxygen better and increase the efficiency of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems” said Namrata. during and after the 1968 Olympics, which took place in Mexico City with an elevation of 2,240 meters (7,349 ft). It was during these Olympic Games that endurance events saw significant belowrecord finishes and anaerobic, sprint events broke all types of records. It was speculated prior to these events how the altitude might affect performances of these elite, world-class athletes and most of the conclusions drawn were equivalent to those hypothesized, that endurance events would suffer

inspired investigations into altitude training from which unique training principles were developed with the aim of avoiding underperformance.

How is it different than training at a gym? Namrata Purohit, co-founder of The Pilates Studio tells us, “Most of the training done in the Simulated Altitude Room is similar to the workout done in a gym, however the most important difference is that in a gym, one is training at sea level where the oxygen levels in the

So you don’t require the same level of commitment from a financial and time perspective, meaning it is probably the best option for most people out there. yi

If Jon Snow knows nothing, I am sure you don’t want to be him in these harsh winters, especially when it comes to skin care. Here are a few home remedy tips Moumita Chakraborty wants you to try for healthy winter skin

I

t's that time of the year again when all the warm clothes are out for the winter rescue. But among the entire winter hustle bustle, one thing which is of prime concern is skin care. The skin becomes crackly, dry, rough and flaky and the hair becomes dry, sometimes resulting in dandruff too. Moreover when the festive season is on, nobody wants to step out of the house looking ragged.Well, you can easily find some simple tips around when you look for it. What works best are nothing but home remedies. Here are some tips you can use to take care of your lovely skin in the harsh winter.

Lemon and honey solution Lemon and honey is without a doubt available at home. What you need to do is, squeeze half a lemon in 2 table spoons of honey and add some sugar granules to it. Mix it well and apply it on your face with a cotton ball. Lemon is rich in vitamin C while honey has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to soothe itchy irritated skin during the cold winter months.

Petroleum jelly and glycerine Glycerine is one of the best products for the winter. It is a natural moisturizer and helps to restore hydration of the skin, making it soft. It is easily available in the local markets or medical stores. The first word that comes to mind when we hear petroleum jelly is Vaseline. Well, one can make the best use of it during winter. It can be used on dry skin, dry lips and cracked heels. Petroleum jelly has moisturizing properties and helps to get rid of a host of dry conditions.

Yogurt and buttermilk face pack Take equal amounts of yogurt and buttermilk, mix them well and apply all over your face and body. Keep it for 15- 20 minutes and then wash it off with water. Yogurt is rich in zinc and other useful enzymes. Buttermilk contains lactic acid which has a mild peeling property and hence it helps to clear dry and dull skin in winter.

Rose and honey face pack Rose water and honey are easily available in stores. What you need to do is take one teaspoon of honey and mix it with equal amounts of rose water. Now apply this face pack on your body. Rose water is an anti-inflammatory product which rescues the dry skin in winter.

It’s the season of weddings, mithaai gorging and bright light-filled streets. You don’t want to miss out on looking shimmering either. If you’re one of those who isn't satisfied with just that lehenga or choli and want to style it up a bit, here’s some trends you could try.

INDO-CHIC THE BOHO-CHIC GIRL Pick out a tribal printed, colourful long skirt and pair it up with a black spaghetti top. Add on a few bangles and you’re good to go.

THE NOT-FUSSY GIRL Pair up that chic palazzo pant you picked up months ago with a sexy short kurti or a backless choli. This is the most comfortable way to binge eat those sweets without it showing on you.

THE SUAVE LOOK Pick up a waistcoat, something in brocade or silk to keep it traditional. Pair it up with well fitted pyjamas and you’ll exude confidence.

THE COOL LOOK Ditch the traditional kurta-pyjama and don the dhoti and kurta. Walk around in style while you’re in total comfort.

THE MINIMILIST Grab a monochrome outfit, in a neutral colour (white, cream or black preferably) and team it up with a pretty embroidered dupatta. Something like a phulkaari or a bandhani style dupatta would look fab.

On the occasion of his bithday month, Aniruddha Sharma tells us how Justin Timberlake – singer, songwriter, actor and record producer, has never failed to amaze us

Cry Me a River

What Goes Around... Comes Around

Justin stated that this song was about betrayal and forgiveness and was described by some music critics as a sequel to his 2002 single “Cry me a river”.Featuring Scarlett Johansson, the video goes on to show that he did not really get over Britney cheating on him.Justin Timberlake revealed that the song was written for the experience his friend went through. The song is a bit repetitive but it has a catchy tune, it keeps playing in your head once you hear it.

Mirrors

This track was inspired by the marriage of his grandparents. Timberlake sings to a lover on realizing that she is his other half. It’s an emotional mid-tempo track that finds the singer preserving a perfect union that somehow went bitter. Timberlake wins over our hearts again with this song, throwing a challenge to his contemporaries in pop music on how to make one.

SexyBack

SexyBack became Timberlake's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, staying seven weeks at the top spot. Being remarkably different from everything else playing on the radio at that time, it was a revolutionary song for his career. The song features a pounding bass beat and electronic sounds, and does not include Timberlake's famous falsetto. Timberlake felt that radio music had gotten bland and was lacking anything remotely sexy, hence he came up with the lyrics “I’m bringing sexy back”, which were the first lines he thought of.

Suit & Tie

It serves as Timberlake's highly anticipated musical comeback after six years during which he pursued his acting career and developed his lyrical skills writing for other singers. The intro of the song makes you believe that it is a down tempo, EDM influenced track. But no. Timberlake chose to not go with the current trends at that time and went classic instead. 2016 January youthincmag.com 71

music

Written by Timberlake and Scott Storch, the song is about a broken-hearted man who moves on from his past. A ton of personal turmoil fuelled the story behind the song. His relationship with Britney Spears abruptly ended and they went their separate ways since. Following its release, there was media speculation that Spears had written a song in response. This song has become a classic of its genre saying much more via one acoustic version than several media-trained interviews. It should act as the benchmark for any future pop star break-up songs.

Bandit queen

The very famous movie was banned by the censor board because they found it offensive, vulgar and indecent. Directed by Shekhar Kapoor and starring Seema Biswas, Bandit Queen showed the life of Phoolan Devi who was also known by the same moniker, detailing on how she was raped by the Thakurs and her eventual revenge on them, was banned as it enclosed explicit sexual content. The movie was later released in 1994 and won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie and Best Direction that year.

Inshallah Football

This Indian drama film directed by Raj Amit Kumar is a documentary about a Kashmiri boy who aspires to travel abroad and become a famous footballer someday. However, the boy is deprived of travelling outside the country because his father is charged with militancy in the 1990s. The movie captured the irony of Kashmir’s physical beauty, the claustrophobia of militarisation, the anxiety and despondency of children born into war and the nuances of relationships. The movie talks about the inherent castism that is present in India.

Sins

Sins is an erotic journey of a Kerala priest who falls for the charms of a woman and gets sexually involved with her. The film also projected Catholicism in a very immoral light. The whole idea of the film is based on a news story that director and producer Vinod Pande read in 1988 about a Kerala priest sentenced to death on sexual harassment and murder charges. 72 youthincmag.com January 2016

Unfreedom

This 2015 movie is a modern day thriller that talks about a lesbian love story entangled within an Islamic terrorismrelated angle. The story revolves around a Muslim fundamentalist who kidnaps a broad-minded Muslim scholar with an intention to kill, while a closeted lesbian in New Delhi kidnaps her bisexual lover with the intent to love. Set in these two different cities , the film approaches sexuality and violence head on with the focus on Muslim and LGBT identities. The two extreme taboos in a single movie got too much for the Censor Board.

The Pink Mirror

The Indian release title ‘Gulabi Aaina’ is an award-winning Indian drama produced and directed by Sridhar Rangayan. It portrayed the concept of trans-sexuality. It is said to be the first Indian film to systematically focus on Indian trans-sexuals with the entire story revolving around the two and a gay teenager's attempt to seduce a man.

In the mind of

Manto

Known as one of the greatest short story writers in the Indian sub-continent, Saadat Hasan Manto has been known for his highly controversial stories. Puja Roy reviews this legendary writer’s story collection, named Manto – Selected Short Stories, as translated form Urdu by Aatish Taseer

F

ew years back when I was still in my graduation days, reading up literature from various lands (mostly in translation) for my B.A degree in comparative literature, I remember my professor introducing a class full of us to ‘this author’ by stating that he is the best short story writer from the Indian subcontinent. Years later when I read him again, I realized that best he is indeed, albeit an ignored and neglected one. This is the author who decided to go and settle across the border (Pakistan) post partition for reasons inexplicable and regretted this decision of his for the rest of his life. He died a sordid death at the age of forty two as a Pakistani citizen in 1955. Saadat Hasan Manto, for those who have read his works, the name conjures up images of partition and its gory details portrayed beautifully through words which only he could have chosen, in a fashion unmatched by any of his contemporaries. His stories are real and unlike; so is he. They are boorish, vulgar yet true. His characters are burnt & charred due to the sufferings that hard times had to offer, yet they have the courage to move on. Speaking out the actual as is has been the hallmark of Manto’s writing. Life is mysterious, lustful, yet haggard and squalid and that exactly is Manto’s world. This book, Manto- Selected Short Stories has a total of 12 short stories written at different times of his career, translated from Urdu by

Aatish Taseer. The book is a good conglomeration of some of Manto’s well-known works (have been staged, translated widely) like ‘Toba Tek Singh’, ‘Khol Do’ together with other lesser known ones, which are gaining popularity only now. One such story is ‘My name is Radha’. Probably written at a time when he was working as a film journalist in the Bombay film industry, this tale beautifully brings out the poignancy of the infatuation/ love that a vulnerable new comer feels towards a well-known star, many years older to her, from the same industry. His stories are often developed through a third-person narrative and sometimes as in ‘Ram Khilawal’ and

‘My name is Radha’, through Manto himself (the writer, donning the narrator’s hat). However, Manto the author is not to be confused with Manto the narrator. He, if anything, is a creation of his own imagination. In a city like Bombay, where people from different lands come and reside, Manto offers a perspective of his own as an outsider into their lives. The reader can comfortably place himself in these spaces created by Manto and be guided through the lanes and by lanes that he carefully carves out. An extremely talented writer and a very popular film journalist/ script writer of his times, Manto as an author has been highly ignored for all these years. There are few readers of his work and those who have read him have done very less to restore his work. Aatish Taseer summarises, “He was not an Indian or a Pakistani writer as much as he was a Bombay writer, and more than India, the city of Bombay must reclaim Manto”. IRISH HOUSE

Mirchi and Mime

Cuisine: European , American Bites and Booze: Set up in the typical Irish backdrop, this outlet amongst the 6 in the city is a must visit. Located among the hustle and bustle of Bandra, The Irish House has a buzzing ambience with their new menu. For the starters, the Cajun Spiced sweet potato fries were a brilliant find. Adding to it were the pulled pork cigars that combined with chilli flakes in a homemade phyllo pastry. The Bar menu was a major crowd puller, as expected. Starting off with the Jameson’s Sperm, a delicious cocktail made with Jameson Whisky, orange juice and grape juice is a total Yes! The inverted Bird; Vodka, apple juice, passion fruit syrup served with an inverted bottle of kingfisher. Flaming s‘mores: 6 marshmallows dipped in Sambucca, flamed on the table.Overall the bar menu has fruity flavour touch to it. The main menu was no less. To try with is Cheeky grilled chicken burger which is seasoned and with grilled chicken topped with paprika and mayo, garnished chopped hardboiled egg, assorted lettuce and cheddar and mozzarella spread served with sweet potato and chill pineapple relish. The Legendary Burrito chicken containing Mexican rice, baked pinto beans, tomato salsa, sour cream, jalapenos, lettuce wrapped in soft tortilla garnished with nacho chips is also a must try. Fab or Drab: This place has a wonderful crowd and great music adds to it. An absolute weekend retreat with your buddies. 7, A-Wing, Gasper Enclave, Palinaka, Pali Hill, Bandra West, Mumbai. Moumita Chakraborty

Cuisine: North & South Indian, Mughlai Bites and Booze: Let me start of by saying that this is the only restaurant in Mumbai that encourages usage of sign language as all their staff are differently abled, but that doesn’t stop them from displaying utmost hospitality. The ambience was absolutely pleasing with hues of copper and gold adorning the walls. We started off with margaritas, of which the Mango and Chilli, with its refreshing and slightly spicy tinge is a delight. The dips were unlike any seen before and made to suit various palates (made in-house). The Assorted veg Tava Platter was a surprise with their take on the Maharastrian kotambir vadi being the highlight. The Tandoori Fish and Prawn platter was prepared in a never before see, Seekh Style. The flavors were blended together to perfection and it tasted like heaven. For the main course, we were served the Raw Mango curry and Rice which was prepared in a coconut base. The prawns were as juicy as they could get and the raw mango pieces were the perfect add-on. Fab or Drab: The calm and laid back ambience this place offers was a seller. That, coupled with very reasonable rates should be enough reason for you to try this place out. If that isn’t enough; their dessert list will make your mouth water. With the Eton Mess which took over our hearts with its unusual recipe and the Nutella and Toffee Tarte Fine, which leaves you wanting more; this restaurant is an all round winner.
