note What are you going to be when you grow up?

It’s the single-most annoying question all adults, especially relatives, start asking us the moment we begin school. At least as children we could give them entertaining responses – bus conductor, florist, train driver, house maid, nun and so on. But as we entered our adolescence, the weight of this decision started sinking in and we could no longer fire back ‘Lion tamer!’ to those who asked us. Choosing what to study is certainly a confusing and frustrating compulsion. When it was time for me to decide, I looked at my options and realised there wasn’t much for me to choose from. In arts, there were only straightforward BA courses; in commerce BCom and later an MBA; and in science only engineering and medicine were subjects that commanded respect. When I look at the state of education in India today, I realise students now have a much harder time deciding their futures because the choices available to them have doubled and trebled in recent years. If someone now wants to design a lamp shade, there’s a course for that. Cook delicacies, there’s a course for that too. Dance, make movies, invent new technologies, manage sports teams – there are serious degrees for them all. How do you then decide what works for you? We’d like to help you with that – we have provided a comprehensive list of all the undergraduate degrees in India as well as a guide on how you can choose the course and therefore the career that is right for you. Once you have more or less chosen your path of study, look at our research on some of India’s popular student cities to see where you might like to study. As we celebrate the 64th Republic Day with our assessment of India’s global clout, we also list some other days we believe should be celebrated in the country annually. And do flip to our fashion section to see how you could dress up when celebrating those days. May the course be with you!

The festival will be held every year with venues alternating between FTII Pune and SRFTI Kolkata. The awards will be given in three categories; fiction, non-fiction and animation. Films can be submitted from any institution, as long as the films are made as a part of the institution’s curriculum. Films can also be submitted in any language provided that the films are subtitled in English. All entries must be sent in through an institution and a maximum of 4 entries per category can be submitted. The last date for submitting entries is January 15, 2013 and the tentative dates for the festival and awards function is set to be before May 2013. Indian graduates unfit for jobs?

I

f you think your graduation degree will guarantee you employment, think again. According to a report by McKinsey and Company, only 51 per cent Indian employers thought Indian graduates were prepared for entry-level positions in their field of study. However, 83 per cent of Indian institutions thought their students were well prepared for employment. The leader of McKinsey and Company’s education practice in India, Ramya Venkatraman said, “The skills the youth bring in do not match what the employers are looking for Employers find the largest gap when it comes to problem-solving and communication.” So if you’re looking to work after graduation, it might be time to start developing your soft skills.

Goa’s expansions into higher education

W

ith an attempt to further its aim of developing the state as a premier destination for higher education, Goa will be opening up new institutes for training students in the fields of law and fashion. The state has been given the go-ahead for new centres of the Indian School of Law and the National Institute of Fashion Technology which are expected to be opened as soon as possible. The next steps on the agenda are to get clearance to have a design school opened in the state as well as get as many already established institutes to be accredited by an organisation like NAAC. It seems Goa might soon become a key option for students of higher education.

AHMEDABAD Home to: IIM, Mudra Institute of Communications

Ahmedabad (MICA), National Institute of Design (NID)

Vibe: Leading mega city. Quiet with wide roads. Developed infrastructure. Hot and dry climate.

People: Friendly, hospitable people. Food-lovers who love

to eat and love to serve Gujarati food. Entertainment: Restaurants, eateries and food stalls are almost everywhere. Most of the cuisine is vegetarian. Nightlife is almost non-existent. Alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat, so all drinking is done in private. The kite market is worth a visit, especially in January, for its display of colourful, handmade kites. The city’s drive-in theatre is a huge draw. Malls are coming up in a big way. Cost of living: Comparable to Tier 1 metros in most aspects. Public transport is expensive, so most people own 2-wheelers. Autorickshaws don’t have metres, so cheating is rampant. Local food is quite cheap, especially at road-side stalls. Rent rates are low.

open spaces and clean roads in the main city. Progressive due to its rich art, literature and culture scene. People: Loud and outspoken which may be perceived as rude. Taxi and auto drivers tend to get aggressive. People in general can be friendly when approached politely. The young are status and brand conscious. Entertainment: Delhi’s markets are great for shopping, eating and even for cinemas. Plenty of art galleries, theatres and culture-specific restaurants like Japanese, Italian, Korean, etc. There are numerous pubs, bars and clubs that remain open until 1 am (some even longer). Many allow couples only so that women can feel comfortable. Cost of living: Cheaper than Mumbai in rent prices, but costlier in public transport. Advisable to travel by the metro train. Delhi buses are carelessly driven and have been in several accidents. Restaurants can be very expensive; streetside stalls and eateries are cheap and satisfying. Safety: Notorious for crimes against women. Rape, improper touching, groping and lewd comments are aimed at women in public in daylight; women prefer travelling in private vehicles and staying indoors past sunset.

Student opinion: “Delhi is beautifully planned with lots of open spaces and parks, yet has preserved its ancient heritage. It is interesting to see an amalgamation of people from all over the world here. However, the distances are mind boggling and the safety factor is a big concern, especially for women. And there are many hot spots like Karim’s near Jama Masjid, Dilli Haat for cuisines from all Indian states and Connaught Place for shopping and great eateries like Wengers and Keventers.” –Varuna Shunglu, LLB student, Delhi University Overall grade: B+

Student opinion: “The best thing about Ahmedabad is that eating out can be extremely cheap. However, the city shuts down by 10. If your campus is far away from the main city then rickshaws become a huge expense. The best entertainment spots in the city are Law Garden for street shopping and chaat, Alpha One mall, Buttercup and Souq, Bhatiyar Gali, Manek Chowk and the nearby notso-dry zones of Diu and Udaipur.” –Reshma Harikumar, PGDM-C student, MICA Overall grade: A

S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Tata Institute of Social Sciences Vibe: Insomniac city, throbbing with life at all times. Entrepreneurial, cosmopolitan and progressive, but has no campus life as most colleges are just a building. People: Mind their own business, which may be perceived as arrogance, but are actually friendly. Hindi is spoken by all, but police officers, government officials, etc. may not respond until spoken to in Marathi. Entertainment: The suburbs house theatres, malls, cinemas and activity spots for mini golfing, rock climbing, etc. Restaurants are plenty, from luxury to budget eateries, but the street stalls are the best for chaat and foods like pav bhaji and vada pav. Pubs, bars and nightclubs are many, but most shut by 1:30 am. Mumbai’s beaches are also pitiful. Cost of living: High, but cheaper than Bangalore. Rent can be exorbitant. Paying guest and rent share flats are more popular options. Buses are cheap and well-connected. The local trains are even cheaper and form the city’s lifeline. Autos and taxis are expensive in spite of being metred. Street stalls are cheap and serve good food. Restaurants tend to be costly, as do cinemas – especially multiplexes.

Student opinion: “I love Mumbai’s people. They are so helpful! When I had just arrived in the city, some friends and I got out on the wrong side of a station, after-hours. A couple delivered us safely to a taxi cab. I find the city’s vast distances most cumbersome. That one needs to schedule an extra hour or two just for travel really irks me. Although there are many places in Mumbai I love, my favourite is Pheonix Mills! They have everything I love: a shopping haven and good food!” – Nishtha Khetani, BMM student, Jai Hind College Overall grade: B+

attractions are several: caves, water parks, trekking routes, birdwatching sites, etc. Lots of budget restaurants. Numerous cafes, pubs, bars and nightclubs. Weekend getaway towns of Khandala and Lonavala are nearby. Pune has become the choice of venue for music festivals and touring international bands. Cost of living: Cheaper than its neighbouring city, Mumbai, but public transport is only marginally cheaper and the bus network is poor; has a large volume of 2-wheelers. Rent is slightly higher than other cities listed here, but manageable if shared. Student opinion: “Amazing climate, a predominant youth population and the overall vibe of Pune is quite positive for students. A number of restaurants/hang out places are open post-midnight which makes it very convenient. But public transport is pretty substandard making it mandatory to own a vehicle and that’s not impressive with the high fuel prices. One can also expect rickshaw drivers to boss around often. ” –Ernold Thompson, BE Mechanical Engineering student, MIT

Vibe: Cosmopolitan and progressive. Has a moderate

climate which makes for pleasant days most of the year. Silicon Valley of India. Unfortunately, has terrible traffic which might improve after the metro is complete. People: Friendly most of the times and converse in Hindi and English (at times even Marathi and Tamil). Auto drivers can be rough. Some areas are staunchly Kannada, so people there will not speak any other language. Entertainment: Shopping malls are commonplace with the usual options of movies, international restaurants and mid-range to luxury shopping. Once the Pub City of India, Bangalore still has several excellent pubs, bars and clubs, but are forced to shut by 11:30 pm due to police action. Bangalore’s parks are famous, notably Brindavan Gardens and Lalbagh. Bangalore is also the choice of destination for international music acts and touring bands.

BANGALORE

Bangalore has the dual distinction of being India’s Silicon Valley and its Pub City

Cost of living: High. Rent prices have increased because of influx of migrants. As per RBI’s Consumer Price Index, Bangalore is the costliest Indian city to live in. Grocery prices are high (a litre of milk can cost as much as `30), as are local bus fares (as much as `20 for one way). Auto drivers are known to fleece passengers in spite of metres. Student opinion: “I like Bangalore’s climate and its girls! Unfortunately, traffic is heavy and it takes a while to reach a place. Head to Garuda Mall, the pubs at Brigade Road, and MG Road for good food. Barbeque Nation, Mainland China, California Pizza and Jimmy’s are some other great restaurants.” –Sriram Iyer, BE Computer Science student, CMRIT College of Engineering Overall grade: B+

Cuisines in restaurants are limited. Few pubs and bars but they stop serving drinks by 11 pm. Cost of living: Comparatively lower than Tier 1 cities. While college fees may be higher, groceries and entertainment costs are lower. Rent prices are reasonable. Beware of auto rickshaw drivers; though the fare is metred, they might ignore the reading. Student opinion: “Hyderabad is quite a studentfriendly city, but has limited options for street shopping. Students hang out in their college canteen or campus, or at a pani puri bandi or chaat place. There’s always a major confusion over what undergraduate program to pursue. Sometimes it feels like the option you are looking for isn’t available and sometimes you don’t know which course is best for you. To make this decision easier, Youth Inc lists the undergraduate courses available in India

A

dolescence is a really difficult time of anyone’s life. It may not be the most difficult phase but it would certainly rank in the top three nerve-wracking timeframes for anyone looking back at how their life has panned out. While the emotional and physical turmoil is a stigma that comes with the term ‘adolescence’ itself, the professional turmoil is a pressure which everyone feels at about the same age and it is followed by confusion and tension. The reason for this? All across India, countless boys and girls in the age group of 12-14 years will be picking their undergraduate programs which will shape their future in terms of professional life and career. In India, doing well academically in the first stage of life and then following suit in a professional capacity are imposed as the mirrors of an overall successful life. It is a huge pressure on the shoulders of someone who is just stepping into a confusing part of their life to pick the right option that will decide the direction in which the next 45 years of their life will go. Quite often, we are aware of what we want to do with our lives. We know what field we want to work in and what kind of job profile we expect to have 20 years in the future. But the questions that need to be answered

While most are aware of their own Here are a few suggestions plus points and shortcomings, an aptitude test would help tell anyone to take into account what their skills are and which area when choosing your they would naturally succeed in. An undergraduate course aptitude test would help you focus on

O

nce you have seen the list of undergraduate programs which are available in India, it is clear that there is no lack of options in our country. There are plenty of courses in the streams of science, arts and commerce, and in industry-specific streams which provide students with hands-on training. There are also numerous specialisations within the main courses which provide a breakdown of countless industry-tailored subjects to choose from. How do you know which course and which specialisation is the best for you? This is what it boils down to in the big picture. It is about making the right choice which will set you on your way towards a successful career. And to make this choice, you need the right guidance and the correct advice. It

a stream and would provide you a goal to work towards.

GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS

An aptitude test can only help you by highlighting your strengths, it would be a good idea to meet with a guidance counsellor who can advise you on the situation of the industry you are looking to join. A guidance counsellor can also tell you the options that will open up for you with the specialisation you are choosing, the postgraduate courses you can pursue or the job situation for when you complete your programme.

INTERNSHIPS

Once you have figured out what career you want to move into, it would be a good idea to get an internship which would help you understand how the industry works and what your ideal

job profile would be like. An internship is meant to provide onthe-job training which will also kick-start your learning process. It is through an internship that you will understand how the industry works and the effort that will be required for you to be successful.

SPEAK TO PROFESSIONALS

Speaking to professionals who have been working in the field for a few years is also a good idea. You will be able to get advice and an understanding of the field over the long term and you will also be able to have them as a mentor for when you do happen to join the industry.

CONSIDER YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCES

Finally, take your own preferences into account. If the job profile does not match your personal preferences, it is likely that you will not be happy working in the industry. Some industries require commitments and sacrifices which may not be in accordance with the way you have panned out your personal life. Hence it is all down to you in the end. yi

You will need information about the world of work and available education and training opportunities to be able to make the right choice for yourself. Knowing the pathways would help you to obtain the appropriate qualifications that are necessary for your desired careers/occupations. You should also think about what you are good at and what you enjoy doing and could talk to people about what you want to do, refer to career books so that you can draw up a list of options that fit your goals in life. When you aren’t sure at all of where you’d like to be headed, what career path you may eventually take up, it would be advisable to opt for the most demanding subject choices/discipline that you can handle successfully. By doing so you’d keep open a wider range of opportunities to explore when you are surer of your goals. -Jayanti Ghose, career counsellor

Our educational scenario has undergone sea-change and a number of Universities are introducing new and various programmes to give our students the global competitive edge. For students who are unsure about their next move they need to do a lot of home-work by reading various career related articles (newspapers/magazines/ Internet), attending career seminars, career exhibitions, reading information related to various job profiles, industries, success stories of people in various fields and so on. They should speak to various professionals to get brief information of the area they have in mind. Most importantly, they should avoid being carried away with their friend’s decision or parental aspirations. It should not be an ‘impression-based’ decision rather it needs to be an ‘information-based’ decision. This can be done by taking up concrete steps. At the personal level one needs to access one’s strengths and weaknesses and be open to exploring the areas that might be new or unheard of. - Swati Salunkhe, career counsellor

I did an aptitude test at Don Bosco High School, Mumbai. The test was meant to help us discover what our strengths are and what aims we should have for the future. From the test, I realised that my ability to understand concepts was quite strong and I was told that it would be good if I worked on that ability. Based on that advice, I decided that picking the science stream would be a good option for me. Although the aptitude test wasn’t the only reason that I picked science, it was helpful to know what I would be good at and was one of the reasons for my decision to move into the stream. -Leon D’Costa, class 12 student JANUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 21

BIOINFORMATICS

ELECTRONIC SCIENCE

A synthesis of IT with biology, this field uses computer technology to manage and study biological data. This finds application in drug design.

This branch of science is a specialised one, concerned with just the study of electronics and its applications in the real world. There is heavy emphasis on theory and the course includes the study of maths, statistics and the basics of programming and computation.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

BOTANY This is a specialised major that studies only plant life extensively. Also included are the study of fungi and algae, botanical diseases, and plant growth, metabolism and structure.

This is an in-depth study of the chemical, biological and physical aspects of the environment. It combines social science principles to address issues of conservation and prevention.

FORESTRY

APPLIED PHYSICAL SCIENCE This branch is the study of the applications of a physical science subject of the student’s choice – computer science, environmental science, or even a pure science subject from physics, chemistry, biology and maths.

As India’s green cover is deteriorating at an alarming rate, this course fills the lacuna of a science degree that assesses the importance of open spaces and forests, studies tree and plant life in detail and looks at the conservation issues at hand.

CHEMISTRY

COMPUTER SCIENCE/IT

A pure science specialisation, a student would study all the branches of chemistry: physical, analytical, inorganic and organic. The thrust of this course is on theoretical concepts but also touches briefly upon cognate subjects like biomolecular science.

This is the study of computers and the theories involved in building and developing computing technology. BSc IT is more practical in its approach and deals with the application of computer science, while BSc Computer Science is all about understanding just the science behind computers.

MATHS/MATHS AND STATISTICS/STATISTICS A BSc in maths is dedicated entirely to mathematics which may be combined with statistics. Quantity, structure and space – all three are studied extensively using mathematical models.

NURSING

BUSINESS COMPUTING AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS This specialisation combines fundamental computing principles with the design and development of computer systems for commercial and industrial purposes. Also included in the coursework are IT management, project management and security issues.

This is a focused field of study for aspiring nurses and is 4 years long. Apart from covering the basics of biology, nutrition, health and physiology, the course draws on social sciences to impart to students the science of caring of individuals and families. JANUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 29

PHYSICS

In modern medicine, most medical care is performed with the assistance of special technology. Students learn to operate and use a variety of medical machines across all medical faculties in order to assist doctors. This is different from Medical Laboratory Technology in that it is not just restricted to lab equipment and procedures.

A new and exciting branch of science, nanotechnology is the study of matter and its manipulation in an atomic and molecular scale. It involves developing devices and materials that can deal with structures that are atomic or molecular in size.

While this specialisation is essentially the study of all aspects of physics, the course also includes the study of allied subjects like mechanics, electronics, maths and even technical writing.

_EXAM FEVER

With barely a few months left for the IIT-JEE examinations, Mr. Vivek Gupta, Co-Founder and Director, Plancess Edusolution Pvt Ltd, helps students with a month-wise study plan

ISITTU-JEE

DY GUIDE

FIRST STEPS

The aspirants should have finished the syllabus by November at the latest, and therefore the rewriting must have begun from the start of December. The revision has to be in an orderly manner: • The earliest days must be devoted to revision; you should be wrapping up every idea from every topic of. • Take a notebook and write everything in it with an abstract on every topic. For each concept, leave five pages. You will utilise them later. For now just look at every concept and gauge how well you know it: either you can answer any question on the concept or you do not know the concept at all; rate it on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. • For an exam like IIT-JEE, you cannot afford to miss any concept, so in the first 10 days the goal should be to recognise all concepts. • For the next 20 days your aim should be to strengthen the concepts you are unsure of. You must ensure that all the subjects are done by the end of the 20 days and that your ratings are all 5-star. • How can you find out how well you know a matter? There is no sure way, however, you can always attempt to resolve the trickiest questions/ problems from every lesson to gauge your proficiency. Tips to improve your rating: • Go back and self-check your practice questions/problems. • Ask the professor to explain the concept again. • Revisit the concept and solve more problems. • Take up related topics and work on them too. This will not only save you time, but also help you move fluidly to another topic, which is very important.

JANUARY

January is the month to combine all the revision. You might have got a 5-star rating on a concept, but that does not mean it will stay 5 till your exams. • Repeated revision is necessary. Start with practicing the concept you have learnt during December. You might have learnt it with some effort, but you must be able to recall it without any effort. During the exam, you won’t have a lot of time to think, thus the concept behind a complicated question should come to you easily. • At the end of each week you should again examine your ratings; they should not slip at any time. If they are

sliding than you should again revise the concept.

FEBRUARY

You might have strengthened your concepts, but in JEE the questions are not very easy. You should also know all the methods of solving a problem. • There are many ways to solve a concept-based problem and it is essential you know all of them. This will save you time during the exam. In the five pages you left in your notebook after each concept, write complications of the theories where altered approaches are used. • Analyse all approaches, since there

50 Youth Incorporated ║ JANUARY 2013

50 Exam Fever.indd 50

19-12-2012 17:50:43

is a chance that questions can be easily resolved by an unexpected approach. This will take you the whole month, but in the end, you will be proficient in every lesson and will know the different approaches and how they can be used to solve questions.

MARCH

The whole of this month must be focused on solving papers of past JEE exams. • You should consider each paper to be the real exam and aim to finish it within the stipulated time. It is important to practice writing papers, so that you can face the main exam with

more confidence.

• Write at least two papers a day

and aim for finishing at least 50 in the month. • The most important part of this exercise is learning from your errors in the papers. While going through every paper, analyse why the solution is wrong. Was it because you were unaware of the concept? The time was insufficient? You made a silly mistake? Do the necessary things to improve your score. Tip to minimise errors: JEE is competitive and even the loss of 1 mark will change your life. Thus it is very important to eliminate silly

mistakes. The best way to do this is to think through all your steps again before marking the solution. If you have been practicing you should be confident that your answer is correct.

APRIL

Rewrite every formula and concept again everyday until the exam. Revision here would entail reading the formula and pondering on the kind of problems you have solved using it. We hope you have a stress-free and fruitful study period in the coming months and wish you the best for your exams. Good luck! yi JANUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 51

_PRODIGY

When did you discover your passion for racing? It was always a sport that I enjoyed watching as a kid but it wasn’t till I started karting at local events that I realised how much I enjoyed racing as well. I was probably 12 years old when that happened. How was the journey that took you from participating in a local karting event to a race for Narain Karthikeyan’s team? As far as my career is concerned, it

was the changing point for me when I raced for NK [Narain Karthikeyan] Racing. Being a follower of Narain’s career as a kid, it was definitely special to be associated with his team for two years. The journey involved many years of karting and then two years of single-seater racing before finally racing for Narain at the age of 17. How does it feel to be the first Indian to finish on the podium at the Buddh International Circuit? To be the first Indian on the podium

was quite a nice feeling but to be the first Indian to win a race and hear the sound of the national anthem playing gives me goosebumps every time I think about it. Have you faced any injuries or accidents in your racing career? Do such incidents have an impact on your future races? So far, no injuries, but yes, I have had my share of accidents. I believe that if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger!

easy. It’s not like tennis or cricket where we go to courts and nets to practice every day. But if we really do put in the effort and a little extra money, then yes, we can make it accessible to us. In a few more years, we will definitely see many more race cars and tracks around the country. What are the next milestones you wish to achieve? Le Mans [endurance racing that lasts 24 hours], DTM [a German Silhouette racing car series] and GT [Grand tourer] cars

Meet Aditya Patel, the 24-year-old racing champion who is the first Indian to win an international race at the Buddh International Circuit in Noida and is now swiftly increasing his list of achievements Who do you consider to be your biggest competition in the Indian racing circuit? It wouldn’t be fair to say I have a big competitor on the Indian circuit. We’re all in it and heading in our own directions in different forms of motorsport for the country. Do you think India has sufficient facilities for budding racers? Well, we do have race circuits and go-kart tracks but India being a large country means that accessibility isn’t

What advice would you give people who wish to make racing their profession? Love what you do or don’t do it at all. While you are a speed demon on race tracks, what kind of driver are you on city roads? Slow, lazy and alert (don’t confuse yourself, it’s an art!). yi

Is social networking weakening human connections and making us anti-social? The answer seems to be yes as the results of a recent survey conducted by schools.com point to a socially awkward generation. The big surprise was when 39 per cent respondents said they prefer socialising online rather than face to face. However, Facebook is also helping the socially awkward as 83 per cent said social networking helped those who were shy and lonely to meet new people.

British singer Susan Boyle was part of a pretty embarrassing Twitter moment. While promoting the release of her album she used the hashtag: #susanalbumparty (susan album party) which, if read incorrectly looks like an invite for a kinky sex party (sus anal bum party)! While attempting to send a direct message to Justin Bieber, Charlie Sheen (of Two and a Half Men fame) accidentally tweeted his number to millions of followers. Despite deleting the tweet immediately, Charlie received thousands of phone calls and messages. Ryan Seacrest revealed the name of the contestant who would be eliminated from American Idol on twitter before the show aired.

DEPRESSION

There has been some debate on whether social networking sites can actually lead to depression. Researchers claim that comparing one’s lives with those you see on your news feed can lead to a feeling of inadequacy leading to ‘Facebook Depression’. In addition, a study conducted by The Centre for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt saw the following results: 75 per cent of people believe they need to lose weight after seeing their pictures online. 51 per cent said they spend time comparing their own lives to others based on the status updates they read and the pictures they see. 32 per cent said they felt sad when comparing their profiles to others on the site.

E

EMBARRASSING PICTURES

Sometimes the untag option just isn’t enough because you never know when that photograph of you with your head in the commode resurfaces. Luckily, Facebook has come to the rescue of ‘photo trauma’ victims by promising to delete embarrassing photos within 30 days of receiving a complaint. Phew! And if you fancy a quick laugh, SnapChat allows you to send pictures to your friends which automatically self-destruct in a matter of seconds, leaving no trace behind in the digital world.

F

FOLLOWERS

Twitter has transformed everyday people into rulers, Lords, Commanders, even Gurus by coining

one simple word – Followers. Here’s how you can increase the number of subjects in your Twitter kingdom: • Tweet often. One tweet a day is a must. • Your tweets should be humorous, informative, provocative or witty. Mundane or vague updates won’t work.

• Use hashtags, especially the ones

that are trending. You will find more information on hashtags later. • Follow people who share your interests as they are more likely to follow you back.

A hashtag (#) is essentially a tool to classify tweets according to topic. So if you use the hashtag #collegehumour, people searching for that particular hashtag will be able to view your tweet as well. Twitter displays a list of trending hastags, opting for one of those guarantees more viewers. The word hastag itself has become a trend, so much so that a British couple actually decided to name their daughter Hashtag! Some of the most popular Twitter hastags are: #threewordstoliveby #FAIL #nowplaying # idontunderstandwhy #whatimissmost

JUNKIES

J

Are you constantly refreshing your news feed to see how many Likes you have? Do you see social outings as an opportunity to get a new profile picture? Do you check your Twitter account before you brush your teeth in the morning? If your answers are yes, then you, my non-Facebook friend, are a social media junkie. Well, you’re not alone. In fact, youngsters in Australia are actually turning to hypnotherapy to cure their social media addiction. If you feel the obsession creeping in, it might help to go on a social-media detox for a couple of weeks.

As the English language dies a slow death thanks to social networking, here are some of the latest additions in the SML (social media lingo): IDK: I don’t know JK: Just Joking FTW: For the Win BFN: Bye for now Yoyo: You’re on your own

K

LIKES

L

Did you ever imagine a world where the word ‘like’ would be more powerful than ‘love’? If you’re looking for more Likes on Facebook, you need to post more photographs. According to a recent study, people generally Like and share pictures more than statuses, videos and other links.

MILLIONS

M

Facebook has more than 900 million active users (if Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest in the world). • More than 300 million photos are uploaded on Facebook everyday • 1 million people join Twitter everyday (that’s 11 new accounts every second!) • There are more than 190 million tweets everyday • Lady Gaga has the most popular Twitter account

NARCISSISM

It’s true. Social networking has created an increase in narcissistic tendencies. Not only that, a study claims it also results in ‘self-absorption, vanity, superiority, and exhibitionistic tendencies’. Are you sure you want to tell people what you ate for lunch today?

Actually, why are you friends with people who still play Farmville?

he Indian National Congress’s youth battalion is led by Rahul Gandhi, though he seems to be perilously close to breaching the youth bulwark at 42 years. However, there are other popular politicians who are more youthful, namely Sachin Pilot and Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia (a descendant of the Scindia dynasty and the present Union Minister of Power, a very crucial ministry considering the colossal power crisis pestering India). Other notable names are Jitin Prasada, Mausam Noor, Milind Deora, Priya Dutt and Navin Jindal – all descendants of families with a rich political heritage. Profiled here are young policymakers who have quickly and quietly made a name for themselves.

SACHIN PILOT Sachin Pilot (age 35) is the present Minister of Corporate Affairs. He is the son of Rajesh Pilot, who was a Union Minister from 1991 to 1996. When he was elected in 2009, he became the youngest Member of Parliament in the country. He is the first Union Minister to be commissioned as an officer of the Territorial Army, following in the footsteps of his father who had served as Squadron Leader in the Air Force before diving into politics. His father thus adopted the last name Pilot. Sachin’s education is a BA from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi, and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business, USA. In 2004 he married Sara, former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah’s daughter, deftly navigating heavy opposition from Sara’s family. He stuck to his father’s tradition of holding an ‘Open House’ every morning where people from his constituency drop in to interact with him. One of his most pertinent qualities, as writer Aashti Bhartia notes in her novel Votes of Confidence, is his ‘self-conscious evenness’; Sachin speaks in the same tone and dialect in his constituency as he would in Delhi, giving him an air of credibility. During his stint in the Ministry of Information Technology, he attempted to help non-English communities access mobile internet. He was aware of the fact that greater resources needed to be devoted to develope relevant content in local languages. Sachin has stated that he wishes to make the Ministry of Corporate Affairs a more approachable ministry that facilitates and ‘reduces the cumbersome nature of the red tapism and the time lag that we have sometimes’.

Agatha Sangma (age 32) is the youngest MP in the 15th Lok Sabha. Having completed her LLB from Pune University, she went to Nottingham University in the UK to complete her master’s degree in Environmental Management. At the age of 29 she became Minister of State for Rural Development, which made her the youngest minister in the 15th Council of Ministers. She planned to ‘incorporate environmental aspects and focus on vigilance in the work being done in rural areas’. Her appointment was an important step in reintegrating the Northeast with the rest of the country. Conscious of the discrimination against people from the Northeast, Agatha delivered her speech in Hindi while wearing a traditional outfit which made a social and political statement.

Anurag Thakur (age 38) is a member of the Lok Sabha. He is the son of the present Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Prem Singh Dhumal. Thakur, claims to have dropped his last name to pre-empt any accusations of dynastic politics. He became the President of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association at the age of 25. He is appreciated for enabling international matches to be played at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, which is situated 1,457 m above sea level. Anurag later became the President of the All India Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He was an integral part of the controversial Tiranga Yatra which aimed to hoist the Indian flag at Lal Chowk, Srinagar. Anurag can converse with an industrialist and an activist in the same breath, which will hold him in good stead if we were to go by the adage – politics is the art of compromise.

Akhilesh Yadav, the present Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is the youngest CM of UP at 38 years. He is the son of SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, himself a three-time CM and former Union Minister of Defence. Akhilesh began his political journey in 2000 when he was elected to represent the Kannauj constituency in the Lok Sabha. He was later elected the Chief Minister of the state as a result of popular demand. His performance in office, though, has been underwhelming. The law and order maintenance seems to have deteriorated, the youthful exuberance is absent, the investment in the state is still lackadaisical and communal tensions seem to be rising. Many sympathise with him as he is a youthful CM caught in a cabinet full of party loyalists with an inflated sense of ego he cannot afford to irk.

Kalikesh represents the Bolangir constituency of Orissa and is the son of Ananga Udaya Singh Deo, a veteran politician. Kalikesh, a graduate of St. Stephen’s College (New Delhi), was instrumental in starting the Legislative Assistance for Members of Parliament programme. It is an 11-month fellowship which gives the youth an opportunity to work with an MP, giving budding politicians a chance to acquaint themselves with the functioning of the parliamentary system. MAKE A VIRAL VIDEO DAY

beats of South star Dhanush’s Kolaveri Di or South Korean rapper Psy’s Gangnam Style make you feel envious of them? Are you wondering when you too shall become a viral sensation? Then this is the perfect day for you. Make a video of a weird talent you, your parents, cat, dog or friend possesses and upload it to YouTube. Lady Luck might just shine and make you richer and more famous than Mr Shahrukh Khan, and if not, at least more your neighbourhood rival.

8

PASS YOUR BLAME DAY

How would you feel if you weren’t blamed for losing important files, breaking up with your girlfriend or messing up your best friend’s birthday? Pass Your Blame Day allows you to not take responsibility or feel guilty for anything that you may (or may not) have done. On the contrary, you pass on your blame to someone else – your strongest competitor, your worst enemy or even your extremely sweet sibling. We can already see an evil grin on your face.

Pritika Behrawala makes an attempt to increase the list of national holidays keeping in mind the peculiarities of the country and its inhabitants, so gear up as the list unfolds

ANNOY YOUR RICKSHAW DRIVER DAY We’re tired of being bullied by auto rickshaw and taxi drivers. They go on strike every second day and hike prices every weekend. It’s about time we take revenge. Let’s celebrate this day by asking questions like “Bhaiya, yeh taxi mein TV kyu nahin hain?” (Why isn’t there a TV in this taxi?), “Dubai jaane ka kitna lete ho?” (How much do you charge to go to Dubai?) or “Aapka hairstyle aisa kyun hain?” (Why is your hairstyle like this?). Warning: stop before you are chucked out of the vehicle.

NO CURFEW DAY Indian parents are a bit conservative and want their children to come back home early as per given deadlines. They feel that there are deadly monsters outside ready to molest, kidnap or murder their kids. But imagine a No Curfew Day where people won’t have to adhere to deadlines, where you can return home whenever you want and party all night without getting scared of breaking the rules or getting death threats from your parents. Don’t get carried away, though. It’s only one day. MALE PMS DAY Girls always say, “Please bear with me because it’s that time of the month!” They yell, crib, throw tantrums and get weird mood swings during this time. Only murdering someone isn’t permitted. But don’t you think men too deserve one such day in the year? On Male PMS Day, men can pick fights, act like the world’s ending, whine like babies, eat tubs of ice-cream and bars of chocolate and have no one say a word. Have you guys already marked this day on your calendar?

SCARE YOUR RELATIVES OFF DAY Indians need to constantly please and socialise with their relatives so that they don’t become an outcast or the topic of gossiping sessions. They can drop in at your place any time they wish and your parents expect best behaviour from you. You can get rid of your relatives by observing this day. Come up with foolish, mean, scary tactics to shoo them off and derive sadistic pleasure from it. Speak in a language they don’t understand, act eccentrically in front of their kids or say that your house is haunted. Then sit back and watch them run.

TAKE A CHANCE DAY Do you want to do a lot of things but are afraid of the consequences? Are you unsure about your chance in succeeding at it? Life is too short, my friend! Take a Chance Day is when you take a leap into the unknown, unaware of what the future has in store for you. Ask out the cutie you are always eyeing, get rid of your fear of heights or go to work in your comfy pyjamas. It’s time you stepped out of your comfort zone! SCAM FREE DAY Does reading the newspaper scare you as you might come across another scam wherein your money has been pocketed by that uglylooking, fat politician? Does your blood boil when you see that person roaming scot-free, chilling in his/her palatial house? Maybe a Scam Free Day can help. Come up with small ways with which you can contribute towards stopping corruption. Don’t give bribes or fall prey to devious tricks of people who try to loot you. Don’t stand in queues at administrative offices. For a day you will feel relieved.

BOLLYWOOD DRAMA DAY Have you ever felt like saying “Rishtey mein toh hum tumhare baap lagte hain, naam hai Shahenshah” or “Mein tumhare bachche ki ma banne wali hun!” or dress up like Katrina Kaif and dance to Chikni Chameli in the middle of your lectures? If yes, then your prayers have been answered. On Bollywood Drama Day you can fulfil all your Bollywood fantasies by dressing, dancing, talking and acting like your favourite characters without even sounding cheesy. High voltage melodrama and oodles of fun is guaranteed on this day. BE ON TIME DAY

This day might seem a bit difficult to follow because it is fashionable to be late in India. Nothing starts on time here, neither the Parliament sessions, nor the Mumbai local trains or even weddings. Being punctual is considered sinful. But imagine a day when everything functions on time. Set your alarm clocks, avoid TV and sleep early as you can’t be late on Be on Time Day. JANUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 63

T

he most awaited and talked about car in the world is the Tata Nano! It has created a furore in the car industry with its price tag of just `1 lakh which makes it affordable for every Indian. Much has been said and seen since its launch in 2009 and now it is a regular sight on the Indian roads in a myriad of colours. This bite-sized car with its unique shape has revolutionized travel in the country.

SPACE & COMFORT

The highlight of the car is definitely the space inside – it is not as small as I imagined and is spacious for all four passengers though five could easily squeeze in. The car is high and offers easy access to get in and out of the seat and the height makes you feel like you own the road. The dashboard

is in the centre with the speedometer and fuel gauge displays. There are two glove boxes, one on each side making it convenient for the driver to keep things on his side. The engine is tucked below the back seat and thus the boot space is small.

RIDE

The ride is smooth and the car picks up speed easily. The optimum speed, marked in green, is between 40 and 60 km/hr and the maximum is 105 km/hr. In spite of not having power steering, the steering is quite smooth and the car has a turning radius of

4 metres. The brakes are powerful and quick to respond. The Nano is equipped with a 15-litre fuel tank and has an impressive mileage of 20 kilometres in a city and 25.4 kilometres on the highway. The horn is soft which is sensible when it comes to avoiding noise pollution. There is a single wiper on the front windshield with dual speed options.

FEATURES

The Nano’s engine is 624 cc with an impressive 38 PS of power and 51 Nm of torque. There is an inbuilt Blaupunkt audio system with two front speakers which offer good music. The AC has four vents and does a great job of cooling.

VERDICT

The car is extremely affordable for the youth at just `1.75 lakhs. Being small in size is a convenience in a country that drives bumper to bumper. It is also handy when parking in crowded cities where space is a premium – probably why we have seen an increase in Tata Nano numbers in our office and college parking lots. All-in-all, a great car that has made it possible to move on from a two-wheeler to a four-wheeler in a heartbeat, making it easy for collegians to impress their friends or take their girls for a spin. yi

The Empire

A

re we still living in the Raj? I mean, in our heads? Sycophants to foreign brands? Bowing and scraping to the white sahibs and scoffing at Indian people, brands, cars, clothes? Did we not learn a hard, bitter lesson all those years ago, with the British treating us like riff raff? What greater shock do we expect to hit us again until we wake up and smell the coffee? Or in this case the home-grown Darjeeling aromatic brew? To shake us out of this enamoured trance, which things from foreign shores with prices upwards of a few hundreds of dollars look attractive?

India: Flavour of the Year

Observe the current scenario and hold your head up proudly. We’re the flavour of the year, or maybe even the decade. The roles are reversed. The white sahibs need us to spend because Indians are nearly the only ones spending, travelling, wearing and winning. And that too stylishly. Indian takeovers of global companies is a trend and I could go on citing global takeovers, the many new factories Indian companies are putting up overseas, Indian nationals acquiring foreign software companies and BPOs, and so on. I want you to sit up and notice the few that stood out and have given me goosebumps of pride in the last decade.

Our trophy case

• Tata Tea took over a global company twice its size, Tetley Tea, the second biggest tea company in the world. • Subhash Chandra’s Essel Packaging formed Essel Propack after his takeover of Propack of Switzerland, where the impressive merger created the world’s biggest producer of laminated tubes, and an Indian MNC became the global number one.

• The world’s second largest steel maker, Arcelor, finally bent to a US$ 32 billion takeover bid by the world’s largest steel maker, Mittal Steel. It was reported to be a ‘wrenching turnaround for Arcelor’s management’, which had once dismissed Mittal as a ‘company of Indians’ but were forced to backtrack after shareholders threatened to revolt. And a few more heroes – Tata Motors, Ambanis, Ranbaxy (who acquired RPG Aventis), Khorakiwala’s Wockhardt (acquired CP Pharmaceuticals of UK and Wallis Laboratories), Kumar Birla’s Hindalco (acquired famed copper mines Mount Gordon and Nifty), Sterlite (also acquired copper mines in Australia), Sundaram Fasteners (acquired Dana Spicer in Europe and set up a plant in China), Amtek Auto (acquired the GWK group in the UK which is twice its size), Kirloskar Brothers (acquired a majority stake UK-based SPP Pumps).

We, the people

It is we who allow this very superior attitude to nurture in people from foreign shores. We have to respect ourselves, our country, our Indian brothers and sisters, rather than be ever-ready toddies and lackeys to every import that hits our country – human or inanimate. Be a proud Indian and a warm dignified host to the foreign guests; this is my plea this month when we celebrate Republic Day.

meant strictly for that one night. Says Tasneem Merchant, a 19-year-old, “I feel that a one night stand is strictly for those who are capable of physical intimacy without getting emotionally attached. A person should not expect more out of it and it should be seen as an outlet for pure bodily instincts.”

IS IT FOR YOU? Get this clear, one night stands aren’t meant for everyone. If you’re the kind who attaches to people easily, the type who would expect the night to be followed by a breakfast and even the promise of meeting again some time in the near future, this isn’t for you. You’re out to have fun and that’s

NOT SO SAFE This one seems legit. Let’s admit it; people do not carry their medical reports stamped across their foreheads. In the scenario of a one night stand though, that would be most helpful. Remarks Media student Priteegandha Naik, “I think it is too risky. You don’t know anything about the person.

What if the person has some infectious sexual disease? Granted that the experience may be exciting and adventurous but the stakes are too high.” The dude you met at the bar may have the most enticing body. Or the chick with those seductive looks needs to be taken head on without a second thought. Thing is, sexually transmitted diseases are very much fatal. Keep testing yourself regularly,

For me, I think it shows the level of disrespect you have towards your body, if you’re indulging in casual sex. If you’re in love with someone, it just doesn’t make sense to me why you would just sleep with someone to satisfy your sexual appetite…”

Hold on to this thought and then think of one night stands. A lot less draining on your nerves and your emotional attachments. For some, this is nothing short of paradise!

icknamed the Cidade Maravilhosa or Marvellous City, Rio de Janeiro has many distinctions for being named so: it is a World Heritage Site, it is blessed with stunning natural beauty, it plays host to the biggest party of the world and has a rich historical legacy on account of its position as the erstwhile capital of Brazil. Rio has the honour of being the most visited South American city. Its world-famous Carnaval draws huge crowds, as do its beaches, stunning landscapes and geographical marvels, and displays of samba dance and bossa nova music – genres that are unique and native to Brazil. The most recognisable symbol of Rio is the giant statue of Cristo Redentor – Christ the Redeemer – which is now one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Come mid-2013 and Rio de Janeiro will play host to some of the biggest international events: first, World Youth Day in July, a major Catholic event for the youth; next, the FIFA World Cup in 2014; and then the Summer Olympics in 2016. With all eyes on Rio, there has never been a better time to make a trip to the city. yi

Witness the Carnaval, a two-week party of parades, samba dancing and general eye-popping displays. Watch samba schools competing with each other in Sambadrome.  See the New Year fireworks at Copacabana Beach.  Hang glide from the Pedra Bonita (‘Beautiful Rock’) and land on the Praia do Pepino (‘Cucumber Beach’) in São Conrado.  Hike up Sugarloaf and Corcovado mountains.  Learn samba dancing or capoeira, a mix of dance and fighting.  Attend a bossa nova concert in the downtown district of Lapa.  Shop at the ‘hippie fair’ in Praça General Osório in the Ipanema neighbourhood on a Sunday.  Taste the feijoada, Brazil’s most famous dish, a black bean stew filled with big chunks of meat.  Drink at botequins, simple traditional bars that serve alcohol. They are ample in Rio.

ÂLearn basic Portuguese before you travel to converse with the locals, especially the shopkeepers and taxi drivers. ÂRio taxis are a good way to travel around the city. Hire yellow cabs with a blue strip on their sides as they are the legal taxis. Buses are also a great option as they are cheaper and cover more ground quickly owing to dedicated bus lanes. ÂMetrô Rio, the underground train system, is a quick, safe and comfortable way to travel from Ipanema to Copacabana and even beyond. Note that the last carriage of the trains is reserved for women in rush hour and the service shuts at midnight. ÂDrug lords and slums (called favelas) are located on many of Rio’s mountain slopes, right next to middle-class neighbourhoods, which are hotbeds of crime and violence. Avoid them. ÂDengue fever is prevalent during summer, so carry necessary precautions like insect repellents with you. ÂDon’t linger in the streets late at night. Likewise, don’t emerge outside too early in the morning. ÂIn case of an emergency, the number to call is 190 (like USA’s 911).

When it comes to facewashes there are many options one can choose from e.g. creams, lotions, pads, soaps, gels, scrubs and many more. These products also differ in their prices. Sometimes it’s very challenging to find what’s best for you. Skin cleansing is a very important part of the skin care routine as the face is subjected to elements from wind, sun, rain and pollution. It is important to choose the right cleanser which primarily works by clearing away dirt and dead cells, thus allowing the production of new and healthy skin cells. Poor and ineffective cleansing habits in conjunction with inappropriate and ineffectual cleansers, such as regular soap, dry the skin and make healthy, attractive skin harder to achieve. Skin has a natural barrier which is a very fine, slightly acidic coating that is a mixture of sebum (oily fats) and perspiration. This film is continuously secreted over the skin’s surface making a protective layer that is essential to keeping skin healthy. A well hydrated skin behaves like a shield and protects one from allergans and infection. The acidic pH of the acid mantle inhibits bacterial and fungal growth with a normal pH that is fairly acidic – in the range of 4.2 to 5.6. It is important to maintain this normal pH of the skin and not let the skin get too acidic or alkaline. Hence its important to choose a cleanser best for your skin and avoid any harsh soaps. It is important to know the type of skin you have. • Normal skin: This skin type has a proper balance of moisture, oil and durability. • Oily skin: Does your face look shiny, greasy or oily a few

Dr Good Skin hours after washing it? • Dry skin: Dry skin features facial pores that are hard to see a few hours after being washed. • Sensitive skin: This skin type often feels tight or itchy, and is prone to allergic reactions. • Combination skin: If some parts of your face are oily and others are dry or sensitive, you have combination skin. Oily or Acne-Prone Skin Use gel-based cleansers that are free of oil and heavy emollients. The cleanser removes the dirt and oil without clogging the pores. But the cleanser should have a light water-base also so that the skin doesn’t get dehydrated. For a very oily and acne-prone skin one could use a medicated facewash containing salicylic or glycolic acid, especially if one has active breakouts of acne. Dry Skin Cream cleansers or non-foaming cleansers help restore moisture and keep the skin hydrated. For very dry, scaly skin, one could use thermal spring water-based cleanser for additional cleansing. Combination Skin As this skin type is the most common, there are lots of facial cleansers to choose from. The best cleansers are ones that do not dry your skin too much and provide just enough moisture for that perfect balance. The cleansers may contain lactic acid.

Dear D, Every time my friends come over to my house, my mom sits down to hang out with us. My friends find her cool, but it’s an awkward situation for me. I don’t want my mom and friends getting along. It’s just weird! – Worried Teenager Dear Worried Teenager, What is wrong with you? This is your chance. Instead of whining, get back at your mother for all the times you think she embarrasses you. Try and make the conversations as awkward for your mom as possible. Talk about girls, boys, homosexuality, alcohol, sex, rock-nroll and more. And just for the fun of it, get all your facts wrong just to see that shocked look on your mom’s face. She’ll never talk to your friends (and maybe even you) again. All the best, D

Dear D, My boyfriend has the habit of holding on to me all the time. He always wants to hold my hand. He doesn’t let go of it no matter where we are. It’s sweet but the problem is his palms are very sweaty and it’s disgusting. What should I do? Should I break up with him? – Disgusted Girlfriend Dear Disgusted Girlfriend, Try this for starters – apply talcum powder on your hands every time you’re going out to meet him. This will help dry out his hands and maybe he will get the point. If he doesn’t, or if this doesn’t work, get yourself a hand buzzer to give him a shock whenever he grabs your hand. He will be trained like a dog and with time you can stop carrying the buzzer. Maybe then you will need to carry a leash instead. Lay off the doggie treats, though. Glad to help, D

Centre-stage Hong Kong, a cop with a covert mission: penetrate unlawful gangs using a range of elements in combat, and that keeps you thoroughly entertained. PLOT: Assuming the garb of Wei Shen, gamers pervade the mesh of the Sun On Yee triad with a mental sketch of how to finish the gangs. But the gangsters doubt Shen is really with them and the superiors question the extent of his involvement. GRAPHICS: The backdrop, though not entirely authentic, is enthralling and captures the essence of Hong Kong. GAME PLAY: Enjoy the simplicity of a mixed bag of assault mechanisms, several options for combat and a chance to construct play according to your inclinations. There is a free-play option where you inflict destruction at will, but is fun only for a while. The real delight lies in the story. Different actions offer unadulterated pleasure. Blaring stereos, changeable radio stations in cars, hip-hop, rock music – it’s all there. FINAL VERDICT: Holiday in Hong Kong with abandon. It may not be everything you want in a game, but it’s enough for your gaming pleasure.

BRUNO MARS – UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX

WATCH

A Wednesday! has a gripping story and engaging performances by Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah who form the crux of the film. Neeraj Pandey’s first directorial venture displays the status and power a common man posseses. It is the story of a man who calls the Mumbai police telling them that he has planted bombs in five places and they will explode if he doesn’t get four terrorists in return. An engrossing and thrilling suspense, this film promises to make you think about the issues faced by our country and how far you would go to resolve them.

With the success following his debut, Bruno Mars’ second album has been much awaited. The first single on the album, Locked Out Of Heaven, brings out influences of popular 80s musicians with Bruno’s own style of new wave pop which then flows through most of the album with songs like Treasure, Moonshine and Young Girls. He seems to have borrowed from 80s pop music with bass lines and beats but has added his own creative touch to the album to suit modern day pop music music. He has also added ballads like When I Was Your Man, which keeps you guessing with the tempo of the album. His lyrics also seem to have matured from a lovesick teenager to a lustful young man. The final verdict is that the album is fresh and will be enjoyed by most music lovers.

QUICK FIRE INTERVIEW WITH DURVA GANDHI Secrets of the Art Millionaires, as the name suggests, has been written with the intention of demystifying and making transparent the aspects of the art industry that were its best kept secrets for ages. Through it, Durva Gandhi, art collector and founder of breatharts.com, exposes readers to the inner workings of the art industry. This book will appeal to readers, whether they’re art lovers or art geeks, art enthusiasts or even art enthusiasts in denial. The bottomline is that the subject of making money appeals to many and that is exactly what this book is all about, albeit through art. Whether one wants to invest in alternative assets or just wants to read for fun, this book will speak to them. What is your book ‘Secrets of the Art Millionaires’ all about? Secrets of the Art Millionaires is about exposing the hidden truths of the art industry that have been unknown for ages. These secrets have been kept under wraps by some in the industry who fear that if everyone knows the inside workings, they will have the same chances of getting rich with this powerful knowledge. Some fear competition and feel that they arrived at this knowledge after years of experience and hard work, and sometimes, after spending a fortune buying art and making expensive mistakes. Secrets of the Art Millionaires is a breakthrough in understanding the workings of the art market. What inspired you to write ‘Secrets of the Art Millionaires’? At Breathe Arts, our mission is to help people become abundantly wealthy through art. We empower artists, galleries, institutions, consultants, investors, collectors, writers, critics, curators, art students and art lovers, demystifying concepts and changing attitudes, replacing negative ways with positive. In keeping in line with the mission at Breathe Arts, my book helps people become abundantly wealthy through their exposure in art. Knowledge that would otherwise be passed down from one generation to another, is all now available in this hand book which would be a must have for any person inside the industry or on the peripherals. No one would buy art without reading this manual, the bible of art that it is.

Does this book speak from your own experience or does it take from the experiences of other people in the industry? I write from my own experience and none of the insights are good or bad – they simply reflect my experience and the amazing results I have seen after applying these universal principles. If you want to further your knowledge and use it to your advantage, don’t just read this book – read it like the bible of art. This book will bridge the gap between your desire for success and your achievement of success in the art industry.

FLICKR USER DIGITAL BATTUTA

CUISINE: Bade Miya is a roadside restaurant that specialises in meat and kebab preparations. To the non-vegetarian Mumbaikars it could either be a place of exquisitely delicious food at an economic rate, or another roadside stall that has gained popularity for no reason. AMBIENCE: Being a street stall, on first glance it is a pathetic sight with chappalwala waiters serving a number of people mining into their delicious chicken on the bonnet of their Honda cars. The patrons look like the stolen crowd of the Taj Hotel, lurking around here. Yet, it has the best crowd that is hypnotized by the aroma of freshly grilled kebabs in the open night sky. FOOD AND DRINKS: A few dishes succumb their identity entirely to Bade Miya like the Chicken Baida Roti, which can be seen kept on almost every plate served. The Chicken Seekh Kebab gives a smoky flavour to your taste buds. The vegetarian food might not receive the highest run rate but it won't send you running back to your house either! Chicken Bhuna, too, is a fine deal. SERVICE: Service issues do not seem to exist as the waiters make sure that the food lands on your table within ten minutes. PRICE: The popularity of the foodie hub does not seem to have sky-rocketed the prices of the roadside shack as they are still deep-rooted in the soils of Mumbai. A meal for 4 will cost one at most a thousand bucks. OVERALL IMPRESSION: What outshines all the food is the apparent dedication and pleasure in the pursuit of eating in the people around, which leaves you hungry even on a full stomach. And lastly, the chalta-firta washbasin deserves a mention. A waiter carries a jug full of water and a huge vessel to your table and as you bend over the vessel, he pours water on your hands so you can wash off the crumbs. CUISINE: True to its name, the Yo! China Café serves delectable Chinese cuisine which its chain of restaurants is well known for. It also has few items of Oriental cuisine for those who appreciate options. The menu serves varieties in appetizers, mains, desserts and drinks. AMBIENCE: The restaurant has a glass wall which faces a food court and has a large illuminated sign that makes the restaurant very easy to spot. With the ample lighting and use of glass, the restaurant has the appearance of being bigger than it actually is which is comforting. FOOD AND DRINKS: The food varieties range from their unique Ramen style, which is a bowl of noodles in soup, to their Yo! Bowl Meals, which are noodle meals with different sauces and sides. They also offer other soups, dimsums and appetizers. There are quite a few options in the drinks menu with mocktails, shakes, sangrias, martinis and more. SERVICE: The service isn’t a standout. It is average at best. PRICE: The restaurant is affordable. A meal for two would amount between `800 and `1,000 based on the choices for the meal. OVERALL IMPRESSION: The restaurant is a good choice for those who enjoy Chinese cuisine and enjoy a variety of choices for their meal. At the least, a single visit will be suited for anyone to form an opinion about whether to visit again and how many times. 2nd Floor, DLF Mall, Saket, New Delhi -Adhiraj Sood

From bagging the runner-up title of 2010 MasterChef Australia to winning the prestigious MasterChef Australia All Stars this year, Callum Hann has toured Australian universities teaching students how to cook and eat well. The 21-year old has not only written his first Kitchen, but has also launched his own cooking cookbook, The Starter Kitchen school in Adelaide – Sprout Cooking.

FIERY STICKY CHICKEN WINGS

Put some of these out for your friends; they’ll love you for it! Just make sure you have a couple of cold beers on hand, they can be a little spicy. There’s no excuses for cutlery here – a good chance to get your hands dirty!

INGREDIENTS 1 kg chicken wings Marinade: ¼ cup tomato sauce ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup soy sauce 1 tbs smoked paprika 1 tbs cumin powder 1 tbs coriander powder 1½ tsp chilli powder ½ tsp cracked black pepper ½ tsp salt 2 tbs Dijon mustard RECIPE METHOD 1) Whisk all marinade ingredients together in a small bowl or jug. Place the chicken into a shallow, nonreactive (i.e. non-metal) dish and pour marinade over the top. Cover with cling film and refrigerate for a couple of hours, turning over whenever you remember to. 2) Preheat oven to 210 °C (190 °C fan forced). Line a big oven tray with baking paper, or two medium trays. Pick up wings from marinade and transfer to the trays, try to keep them in a single layer, not stacked on top of each other, to ensure even cooking. Bake for 30-40 minutes, turning half way, or until chicken is cooked through. You can baste the wings with leftover marinade during cooking if you like, but I usually forget. COOL CHEF CAFÉ, MUMBAI

VIBE: Cool Chef Café was a bungalow in Worli village in Mumbai which was converted into a restaurant and pub. It retains a homely vibe with showcases of crockery and other decor but it matches up as a lively and highly energetic nightspot with some great contemporary music. The restaurant section is spread over two dining rooms along with a bar and it has a separate room which serves as a pub area. MUSIC: The music played here is fresh and energetic. Most of the tracks featured are from a range of dance music which bodes well for the vibrant ambience. BITES ‘N’ BOOZE: The menu here is extensive with continental cuisine being the king of the lot. Its range covers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options in salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, pastas, lasagnes and more. Their speciality starter, Cool Chef’s Crunchy Chicken Thai Samosas, can be hailed as one which is not to be missed. Their drinks are quite unique as well with many refreshing options to choose from. BUCKS TO SHEEL: A meal for two, including food and drinks, would amount to `2,000 which is a bargain for the quality of the food and fun. FAB OR DRAB: Cool Chef Café has an excellent vibe which is inviting and homely. It is really energetic and worth repeat visits. BEST NIGHT: Weekends are the best nights to visit Cool Chef Café. CLUB 9 BAR, GOA

VIBE: Club 9 Bar was once the epicentre of the trance scene. It is chilled out and usually well accommodated but gets crowded when famous DJs perform. The crowd is relaxed and enjoys dancing. MUSIC: The music here is always trance and psychedelic, which is great for those who enjoy it, but not appealling to those who don’t. BITES ‘N’ BOOZE: The pizzas are magnificent. The food and alcohol is quite affordable with huge shots decently priced. You can groove on the dance floor while eating and drinking. BUCKS TO SHELL: It is easy to enjoy a night here with as little as `500 but indulgences take the bill higher. FAB OR DRAB: The music, food and vibe are brilliant which makes it ‘fab’. But if trance isn’t your preference then staying clear of this place is advised. BEST NIGHT: Any night is great but the atmosphere is amped whenever there is a famous DJ gig. My first act was when I was born. The doctors laughed and the nurse quit her job. Then around 2 years ago I took part in the Bombay Elektrik Project Krack You Up nights. That was when it all began.

An unfailing joke: I look like Malinga's long lost ugly brother.

Sahil Shah’s USP: Self deprecating humour and completely irellevant one liners.

One stand-up comedian you look up to: There are many but my favourite comedian of all time is God.

Your dream performance would be at: The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in front of around 20,000 people. That is when I will have hit it big time.

Sahil Shah is one of the youngest comedians who performs at a professional level. He refers to himself as a child stuck in a man’s body. Sometimes the child disagrees with this. He is a regular at the Comedy Store and has also performed in multiple cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Hyderabad. He has performed at numerous college festivals as a professional stand-up comedian. He is one of the founding members of East India Comedy, which is one of the country’s busiest comedy companies. He also loves to show off.

The person who stars in most of your jokes: I generally talk about myself and the things that happen to me.

Your worst heckler so far/the worst audience reaction you have ever received: This chap got up and said, y‘ ou'’re not funny’, and walked away. So sad. He missed the fact that the crowd was laughing at all my jokes and my rebuttal. I think he was just jealous.

Which 3 celebrities would you like to see laughing at your jokes? Deepika Padukone. I would love it if she found me attractive because of my humour  Aamir Khan. After all the tears on Satyameva Jayate he needs a few laughs. Amitabh Bacchan. If I could just hear that loud booming laugh, my day would be made.

Your worst nightmare: Getting into a relationship with Dolly Bindra.

Any advice to your fellow budding stand-up comedians: Don’t try to imitate anyone. Just be yourself. If you’'re funny keep at it and you will become better. Never steal jokes. Steal money if absolutely necessary but never jokes.

Sahil Shah in the next 5 years: I will be 26 and hopefully have a lot more shows under my wing. That is because at the age of 26 I will make sure I surgically implant wings on myself.

The worst joke you have ever heard: Every joke that I crack.

The best way to get rid of preshow jitters: Running around, jumping, screaming and constantly praying to God saying you will sacrifice a friend if everything goes all right. JANUARY 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 87

Effective communication will leave none in doubt of your intentions. You may not have things your way, but people will realise they can’t take you for granted. Don’t be let down by adversities as your shoulders will support people who look up to you. Old strategies will work better if you make necessary changes to adapt them to the current scenario.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS YOU SHOULD MAKE THIS YEAR So it’s that time of the year again. The one where you swear you’ll be a better carbon-based life form dumped on this planet to make yourself feel better about the stupid things you’ve done the whole year. It’s New Year’s resolution time! You swear to live in a clean environment. You do not ignore the fact that your room is a pigsty while you’re out saving trees.

YOU SWEAR TO HELP YOUR MOTHER OUT. YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT START PLUGGING YOUR EARS AND BARRICADING YOUR DOOR BY FEBRUARY. You swear to pass your semesters. You do not, under any circumstances, take retests.

YOU SWEAR TO BE MORE CHARITABLE. YOU DO NOT SQUEAL LIKE A LITTLE GIRL AT THE JUHU CIRCLE RED LIGHT.

YOU SWEAR TO USE SOPHISTICATED LANGUAGE. YOU DO NOT *BEEP* USE *BEEP* LANGUAGE VERY *BEEP* OFTEN ANYWAY.

You swear to get a girlfriend. You do not rear back in indignation when the potential one slaps you in response to your heartfelt proposal.

You swear to wake up bright and early and cheerful every morning. You do not drag yourself out of bed like Frankenstein’s monster This column is brought to you by Laugh Out Loud – The Indian Humour Brand
