note

For the past two months, the country has been consumed by the IPL saga: record performances, shameful controversies and heated on-field interactions. As audiences willingly invest into cricket with their support, their money, even their emotions, other sports in this country are left longing for their due. For example, Sunil Chhetri’s historic I-League title win with Churchill Brothers last month remained comparatively uncelebrated. While I am among the guilty who reserve their passion for cricket, this month’s cover story has altered my perspective considerably, and I hope it does the same for you. Sunil Chhetri, India’s football captain, is a man with a long list of achievements. But what really stands out about him is his dedication and passion for the sport. In the interview that follows, you will find Chhetri to be both realistic and inspiring. He is humble about his laurels, optimistic about the future and innovative in his suggestions to improve the condition of football in India. If you do not know much about the sport, don’t fret, his responses will not leave you alienated. For football fans, there are several reasons to rejoice as Chhetri reveals honest details about his stint in Portugal, his iconic match against Manchester United and his life off the field. This month we also make Wimbledon predictions with a list of probable successors that can match Roger Federer’s record winning streak. Here’s to a month of new sporting discoveries! While some of us prepare for a month of sports, others are preparing for a slightly daunting transition from school to college. For all you nervous newbies, we have a guide to help you sail through the first month of college coupled with valuable tips from college seniors. Those of you planning an overseas education, we have something for you to ponder over. While most students contemplate between pursuing a degree in the UK, USA or Canada, we would like to acquaint you with some emerging education destinations to help you make a more informed decision. If you are already armed with your degree and ready to embark on your professional path, we tell you about the coolest offices in India, known for their unconventional work environment and innovative policies. Meanwhile, the highlight of my month has been my interaction with Lior Suchard. The supernatural entertainer and mentalist, who performed in India last month, left me speechless. During the interview, Suchard’s ability to read my mind left me convinced that there is no trickery involved; this man truly has a gift. Summer, sports and supernatural experiences – June cannot get any more exciting!

NEWBIE TO

COLLEGE? When you’re fresh from high school, it is but natural to be apprehensive on the first day of college. We tell you how you can get through those first few days

WEEK 1

PREP BEFORE THE BIG DAY!

ENTERING THE COLLEGE

Now that you’ve settled the first major question ‘which college?’ here comes the next big one, ‘what in college?’ Don’t fret over how the first day will shape up, it usually ends before you’ve time to think over it.

The first day is almost here. The institution where you’re going to spend the next few years has been finalised and you are set to step into college life.

Just remember:

 You may need certain things like bags and stationery before the start of college. Besides, shopping has this wonderful ability to soothe nerves in some people.  Avoid late nights the day before college starts. You don’t want to be late on the first day itself. Also, figure out well in advance how you’re going to commute to your college.  College is the next big step in your life after school. And much like school, you’ll be nervous on the first day and inconsolable on the last. Everyone around you will be in the same boat.

 The Orientation – Expect some lengthy lectures from the principal and the professors on how to behave in college right from day one.  Familiarise yourself with the campus. Getting lost in the campus while searching for classrooms is perfectly fine on the first day.  Ensure that you get done with the requisite paperwork on campus for stuff like ID cards, library cards, travel passes and so on. NIYAM BHUSHAN, FLICKR

TIM MOORE, FLICKR

Just remember:

Getting through the week: Make sure that you take the initiative in starting conversations with your classmates. That way, college becomes a lot friendlier right from the first week.

SENIORS TO THE RESCUE

Unlike the heydays of ragging, seniors in college today are, thankfully, a more civilised species. Here’s why you’re going to need them:

WEEK 2

BLENDING IN

You may be missing your old gang of friends, but before you realise it, you will become part of a new one in college. This part can be tricky as the group you pick will have a significant impact on your college experience.

Just remember:

 Unlike your neighbourhood and school, you will get to see a more different and varied group of people in college. Be open to them and resist the temptation to judge them.  You don’t need to become best buddies with everyone you meet, but being friendly helps. Seniors are the ones you should keep in touch with. All the important information that cannot be imparted in the class (advice on dealing with professors, which rules you can work around and which ones need to be taken seriously, exam and assignment tips, etc) can be gleaned from seniors.  You may have thoughts of needing to dress differently for college. Nothing on the lines of the latest diktats from Lakme Fashion Week is required. Find a comfortable style for yourself and flaunt it in college.

definitely need a special mention here. Since time immemorial, it has been a great tradition for students to skip lectures to loiter in and around the college campus. However, it’s not always as good a joyride as it seems.

Just remember:

 Bunking just for the heck of it doesn’t make sense. Some colleges do take the 75% compulsory attendance rule seriously.  It is important for you to be familiarised with teachers, exam schedules and so on. In order to do that, you will have to stick around in the classroom once in a while.  Finally, being absent from the class for long durations can leave you gobsmacked on the eve of the exams. Make sure you have back-up plans to counter this eventuality.

Sincere students know the subject; the smart ones know the professor. Get as much information about the faculty as you can. For attendance, assignments and examinations, you’ll need every bit of information you can get. If you’re worried about anything, like misplacing an ID card or being in trouble in a subject, see what your seniors have to say. They usually know a way out of the situation as they might have been in it before. If you’re too lazy to write notes, see if any of your seniors have preserved theirs. Notes from your seniors are handy during exams. You’re new to college and are all geared up to join some extracurricular groups. Consult your seniors to know which ones will suit you best.

Getting through the week:

You need to attend important lectures, internal tests and assignment submission dates. Don’t skip these bare essentials just for the sake of bunking.

WEEK 4

BEFORE COLLEGE

PROFESSORS HAVE THE POWER

The power that professors have to alter the course of your college life is almost magical. Most students would readily agree that, like Professor Charles “X” Xavier in the X-Men films, your professors can either be your closest allies who will vouch for you when you need the help, or your harshest critic to help you get the most out of your life in college. Either way, chances are that by the time you are done with college, you will jovially look back at the time spent with them in a positive light, so it’s best to start off on the right foot.

Morning shows

There is usually a cinema house in the vicinity of every college. If not, go the extra mile to hunt for one. Morning shows are a great steal as they usually come cheap and are a good way to while away your time.

 Don’t go around licking their boots just to become the teacher’s pet, but don’t commit the mistake of getting on their wrong side either since it can be fatal to your college life.  Behaving rudely or insolently with your professors can become your Achilles’ heel, especially during the time of internals and journal and assignment submissions.  Some professors tend to be very friendly with students and can help you in your career. Be sure to spot them and maintain good relations with them.

HOW TO IMPRESS YOUR PROFESSOR

© WARNER BROS

Johhee Sherma answers a question that many of her classmates have asked her in an attempt to uncover her secret – how do you impress your teacher?

REASONS

What interests me more is ‘Why impress a professor?’ And I realise the very origin of this shtick is lack of confidence. “Be in his good books or else he’ll target you for his deadly questions” is what they say. And what if you’re not able to answer while his act of humiliation is in progress? The very thought of ‘your image’ being crashed is demeaning, so the fear of it actually happening is reason enough to be in his good books

ANSWERING IN CLASS

Well, you don’t need to walk the extra mile to impress your professor. When it comes to their cross-questioning sessions in class, all you need is a bit of revision of the lesson and the right moment to answer to leave their eyebrows raised at your impressive knowledge. And if you don’t really know the answer to their question, expect to hear “That’s why we ask you to revise,” as they begin the assault on your ears with a lecture. But then you can coyly state, “Sir, I wouldn’t have attended the lecture if I knew all the answers.” Sure, it may come across rude, but a cool teacher may just be impressed. Of course, this isn’t alright with every teacher, but that is down to your own judgement.

TEACHER’S PET

There’s a fine line between ‘ass-kissing’ and impressing that you should be aware of. Asking questions too often and nodding frantically to everything they say won’t be of much help. Students usually believe in the maxim ‘the more you’re seen, the more you’re remembered’. But chances of getting busted are very high. Teachers don’t appreciate an irritating face popping up in front of them all the time. A genuine tip – try only when needed.

THE ONES TO BE AWARE OF

Some teachers are flexible. They are comfortable with opinions which are poles apart and with giving the ‘best student’ award to the bad guy. They can proliferate narcissism and suppress modesty. They often leave you confused because there’s no definite way to impress them. They may find being sweet to be offensive and being blunt as broad-horizoned. Sounds fascinating in theory but be careful what you wish for. I wouldn’t recommend attempting to impress them.

ALWAYS REMEMBER

Teachers never get impressed. They just get pleased – pleased to see students do homework, follow their advice, take interest in the subject or just stay mum when they turn to the blackboard. You can assume they’re impressed if they look at you and nod when you disagree. But according to me, the best way to impress a professor is by not trying at all. yi

FROM

TIPS seniors Don’t get nervous over being nervous!

Pradnya Surve, TYBMM

Nervousness, excitement, a new environment and new people – the first few days of college rotates around these words. On the very first day my professor asked for our introduction and then as I went on the podium I felt short of words to describe myself as nervousness ate half of the things I would have liked to share. My suggestion is, just be yourself, be calm and enjoy the way things come and don’t rush when it comes to forming groups.

Don’t rush to fit in

A.V. Shruti, SYBA

Although I knew college would be fun I always pictured it as a harsh place where I won’t be able to fit in. But it turned out to be a whole new experience which I cherished a lot. My suggestion to freshers is don’t try to fit into certain groups; don’t do things that you aren’t comfortable with. There is no need to prove anything to anyone. Do things differently and be unique. Stand out, be different and you’ll be acknowledged. Don’t follow the crowd because people usually get lost in it.

Being open to others On the first day, every group (yes, even on the first day, there were groups!), was more than nice to me. The first day for me was scary and kind of nerve-wrecking and still happy-shiny somehow. But isn’t it so for everyone? As a fresher, all one can do is trust others and be open to everyone else for that’s how you soak in the college atmosphere in the starting few days. And that helps a lot.

Shruti Sundaram, SYBTech

Making friends

Sundaresh Sankrith, SYBSc Just shake as many hands as you can, because you never know who’s going to be that college buddy who helps you out with everything and you do the same for him/her – in short, your best friend. You need to know that on your first day every single person in your class is a newcomer so everybody will be feeling the same way you do. The first few days of your college are when you reach and leave home on time but once you’ve got friends you might leave home on time but you’ll never reach home on time. The only tip for a newcomer would be – go with the flow!

It mimics a person in real time and replicates his/her movements. What: A concept reminiscent of the movies Real Steel and Transformers, Parinat (Sanskrit for transform) is IITB’s first transforming humanoid. Uses: As a transforming humanoid, it can have several applications, ranging from carrying out rescue operations to exploration and research work in harsh climatic conditions. Current stage: Under development. A dedicated team of 10 students is working on a 14 degree of freedom model that it will have greater

flexibility in its movements. This can transform between a humanoid mode and a vehicle, similar to the ones in the film Transformers. Team: Ashay Tejwani, Alap Kshirsagar, Sundaram Prasad, Urvesh Patil, Krishnakant Saboo, Goutam Bhat, Nimit Kumar Singh, Vishweshwar Singh, Aman Berlia and Aayush Yadav What its developers are saying: “We started off with a simple biped (two-legged robot) and are currently assembling a 14 degree of freedom transforming model (our fifth prototype).”

TUM TUM TRACKER

A bus tracking system developed for the buses of IIT Bombay. What: TUM-TUM Tracker, named after the popular bus service in IIT Bombay, is a bus tracking system which can be implemented by creating a mesh network all over the campus using the modules present in buses and at bus stops. Unlike the GPRS one (which needs data connection from a cellular network), it requires only a one-time investment in the form of a wireless device (X-BEE Pro). Current stage: The prototype of this model is ready to be implemented. However, gaps in funding as well as a cap on student projects are hindering its mass implementation. The developers are trying to fund the infrastructure through other means. Uses: With its novel design and application, it has the potential in making bus travel a lot more convenient. Team: Sudheer, Jithendar, Varun, Sumanth, Sushanth What its developers are saying: “We provide display interfaces at bus stops displaying the time and route of the approaching buses and also have web and Android application which displays the position on Google maps for users. The major challenges in our project are implementation of mesh network and long range communication without any recursive cost.”

Zumbl, invented by the students of IIT Delhi, is an online platform to chat and interact with strangers. What: Meeting random people online and chatting with them has been around for quite some time. Zumble.com takes the process a step further by refining the user experience. It takes the user’s basic information as well as likes and dislikes into account, which allows the user to chat with people having similar interests. It can be downloaded both on the phone and the computer. Current stage: The site is live now. Users can create a profile through their Google or Facebook accounts. Uses: A brilliant way to change the user experience of online conversations, Zumbl is a fun application that will appeal to many. Awards: Finalist in Samsung Innovation Awards 2012 Team: Abhishek Gupta, Devashish Tyagi, Saurabh Kumar , Sherjil Ozair What its developers are saying: “Zumbl basically makes your chats with strangers more meaningful and fun by giving you features like having a profile without your real name and tags (what people think of you as). The tags that you earn will shape your online identity that is your Avatar and show you how you look through a stranger’s eyes! Zumbl is here for you whenever you feel like talking to someone! ” - Saurabh Kumar

HAND-PIC’D

A versatile and easy-to-use controller that can function as the digital extension of our hand. What: It is a generic gesture-based controller that can track the tilts and position of whatever object/body part it is attached to and can be used to control another gadget based on the movements of the object it is tracking. Current stage: The concept involved in Hand-PIC’d is still under development, similar to Parinat, which uses it to make the bot mimic the user. Uses: It has a wide range of applications and can serve as a computer mouse, a robotic arm among others. It understands the motion of the user, instead of the user learning how to operate it. Awards: Finalist in Samsung Innovation Awards 2012 Team: Ashay Tejwani What its developers are saying: “The prime advantage HandPIC’d has over most devices currently available as controllers is the fact that it doesn’t have any buttons or joysticks which need to be learnt and adapted to, nor is it dependent on ambient lighting conditions or limited to a certain 3-D space for its use. That was the prime driving force behind its development.” - Ashay Tejwani

SELF-BALANCING SKATEBOARD

A skateboard capable of carrying a person which functions mostly like a segway. What: As the name suggests, this is a self-balancing vehicle that uses sensors to balance it while the turning can be done manually or by integrating it with pressure sensors. Uses: An easier alternative to the current skateboard, this can help those who shy away from skateboarding. Team: Kalpesh Patil, Prateek Shah, Akash Patil What its developers are saying: “Our main motivation for this project was the self balancing bot (a small scale model) we made during our first year. The control of the skateboard is based on the simple idea of how we balance things: Give a torque opposite to its angle with the vertical. This is achieved by calculating the angle using sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) and applying the corresponding torque with motors.”

IITs are known for their impeccable teaching standards. What according to you constitutes good teaching? Firstly, good teaching is about the teacher who should have a good understanding and command over the subject. He tries to convey it in the class setting and is responsive to whether students are receiving it or not. He is able to moderate it to the level that students can understand. Finally, the teacher should be able to inspire the students.

In the classroom, to what extent would you advocate the use of technology for teaching? So long as the technology is not a substitute for teaching itself – technology should enhance communication. It should not make the lecture come across as routine or scanned. The vibrancy of the classroom should be maintained. It should get the students engaged. For example, the clicker method of teaching is a great thing, for the whole class gets involved and they can see how they’ve responded to a

What new departments and courses will IIT Bombay be introducing in the coming year? We’ve added two major departments in the last 2-3 years (bioscience, energy science). What would you say to the students who fail while chasing their dreams? Most endeavours in life are quite fruitful if we take the right amount of interest in them. Sometimes, we’re just not aware of the opportunities available. If some doors are closed, then some other doors will open if you explore again and persevere. You will be able to find something that will interest you, engage you. One should not take a short view of one’s failure to meet originally planned goals in one’s career. yi JUNE 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 25

Satej Karandikar gets you the inside scoop of the intern’s side of the story in an open letter addressed to his boss

This is to bring to your notice that the intern who has been slogging away at the computer desk at the far end of the corner of your office has had an awesome experience here.

Don’t remember me? But of course, you wouldn’t. You’ve had so much to manage, like manipulating office bills, playing solitaire on your PC and last but not the least – acting BOSSY.

It is always a pleasure to bring you coffee at any and every hour of the day just like a manservant, There’s verbal thrashing over petty issues, being kept in the dark about basic things like salary, amount of hours expected to be put in work, inconvenience caused by your pot belly and listening to trivial trivia about irrelevant things.

I would also like to bring to your notice that I have wasted over two months of my life in your dingy, air-deprived office that has given me asthma, sinus and other health issues. Not to mention poring into a monitor – this has given me high-power spectacles and absolutely zero knowledge of work. For this, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Let me state the obvious for you: The staff hates you. You should be demoted to the clerk level. You need to go for Liposuction. Instantly.

RAGGING VS BULLYING

Ragging is widely defined as ‘any action or situation created by a group

to intentionally produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule among those wishing to join the group.’ Professor of psychology, and a key researcher in bullying, Dan Olweus defines school bullying in a general way as “repeated negative, ill-intentioned behaviour by one or more students directed against a student who has difficulty defending himself or herself. Most bullying occurs without any apparent provocation on the part of the student who is exposed.” The fundamental difference between

ullying and ragging have long remained a smear on independent India’s script. Countless efforts have been undertaken to tackle the deepening menace and various legislations have been enacted, and while some have been effective, there is an overwhelming feeling that the law can have more of an impact to improve security of students in Indian institutes.

Many Bollywood celebrities are openly against ragging and have spoken about the need to eradicate it. Amitabh Bachchan has vaguely spoken of a traumatic ragging encounter in his college days while Arjun Rampal has also spoken of a vow he took in college to never rag his juniors after he was subjected to ragging by his seniors. During the launch of 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan said that the film was specifically antiragging and hoped to highlight problems in the education system.

When it comes to ragging, a victim who has been physically and mentally tormented by his seniors might start believing them to be his friends who are putting him through a rough time to prepare him for the future. This can be equated with Stockholm Syndrome where a kidnap victim empathises with their captors after having spent enough time in their presence. Unfortunately, this will ultimately result in the victim justifying the act of ragging who will, in turn, impose it on their juniors in the following years. Bullying causes physical and emotional pain among the victims from continuous tormenting by their perpetrators. But with time, the effect is also felt by the perpetrator who spirals further into trouble-making activities which can be in the form of conduct disorder, substance abuse and other forms of crime.

from turmoil at the hands of his seniors under the guise of a socially accepted norm. However, strict laws need to be set up which will allow legal redressal to the victim and book the perpetrators for their heinous acts. It is only by effective legal recourse that a mass taboo would be placed upon the act of ragging, thereby eradicating it from our schools and colleges. Bullying dances to a different fiddle since it stems from a psychologically affected individual or group of individuals who are asserting their will upon a weaker person. Emphasis should be laid on providing appropriate care to the victim as well as to the perpetrator in the form of counselling and psychiatric therapy. Restructuring the juvenile crime system will also allow strict legislation which will nip the root in its bud and help eradicate the problem from modern society. yi

India ranks third after China and Singapore when it comes to cyber bullying. Reports have indicated that cyber bullying cases persist in the country due to perpetrators believing that they can get away scot free and because of intolerance towards minority groups who have been the prime victims of the crime. Cyber bullying is punishable under Section 66A of the IT Act which states that a person can be booked for sending false, offensive messages through communication services.

While ragging was originally meant to help freshers mingle with their seniors and break the ice, it has become a tool for seniors to impose social hierarchy and implement their will upon their juniors. EVERYONE NEEDS AN ART DIRECTOR

We live in an age where visual communication dominates all forms of media. It is no surprise then that art direction is prevalent across media such as television, theatre, advertising, websites and even gaming. However, there are broadly two varieties of art directors: those that focus on graphics and visuals in the digital form and those that work with sets, props and production design. For example, if you are an art director working on print advertisments, you will work in collaboration with the copywriter (who is in charge of the verbal communication) and create the visuals for a print ad. But if you are working on a film project, you will be collaborating with the production designer to create the right visual look for the film (by planning the set design, props).

IS THERE JOB MOBILITY?

“Of course there is!” says Raj Khatri, Art Director at Marching Ants. According to Khatri, creative vision is not restricted to a medium, and the shift from graphic design to set design is easily achievable. “Artistic sensibilities can always be adapted to any medium as far as it fits the brief! Only the tools of the trade change and it takes a while to adapt; before you know you have a new canvas ready!” On the other hand, freelance art director Boishali Sinha is slightly more sceptical about the suggested ease in mobility. “I mostly do ads and movies. There is only one print campaign that I have done and those are the publicity posters for Ramaiya Vasta Vaiya, which is Prabhu Deva’s upcoming flick,” she explains. “It is not easy to shuffle [between print and ad/film projects] but if you know your job, shuffling is not a problem.”

DO YOU NEED TO GO TO ART SCHOOL?

PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

“Please don’t let money be the reason to enter designing /illustrations. Let it be your love for art. Enjoy it, love it, hone it, excel in it and money will surely follow. That’s the main mantra – ENJOY what you do, else you are dead even before you start!” - Raj Khatri, Art Director at Marching Ants

(Above) Film posters designed by Raj Khatri

Raj Khatri feels the ‘urge to create’ overpowers a college degree in this profession. “I am from a science background and I never went to any art school, nor do I have any formal art training. In my case, I have always been a movie poster fanatic and loved sketching since childhood. Hence the transition from science to arts came naturally to me.” Art direction, like most creative professions, allows you to be assessed on the basis of your creations rather than your college grades. As Khatri emphasises, “Later in life, only your work and portfolio will speak for you. No one cares or remembers which college you went to!” But before you throw out your college application, consider the merits of an arts degree. “It becomes a little easier for an employer to gauge a designer based on his/her college work and environment and gives you a ready first step,” admits Khatri.

CAN YOU HANDLE THE CHALLENGES?

The life of an art director is not about surreptitiously playing computer games behind large iMac screens or watching fantasy films under the guise of ‘referencing’ (though these could be occasional perks). “There will be times when you will want to quit everything and run away because of the pressures and client amendments,” says Khatri. “It is never a glamorous job. We are the backbenchers who do all the ‘dirty’ work to make the stars in the limelight look glorious.” So while your visuals might gain nationwide popularity, you will probably remain nameless to the masses. “Chances are no one will ever know your name among the aam junta. You have to learn to live with that and enjoy your work,” advices Khatri. JUNE 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 33

Before each shot also there are a lot of breakdowns. But we do go through the requirements scene by scene and then by call sheet. For example, for Rowdy Rathore,

shoot of Bigg Boss for ETV Bangla and suddenly there was a requirement of a long table where Mithun would play chess. This we had to do in 30 minutes and we created a table. These are the things that keep happening, so we have to be prompt in thinking and figure something out ASAP. yi

BUT IT’S NOT JUST READING…

Commissioning editors do not just read manuscripts; they also conduct market research to investigate and study reader habits so that they can identify which kind of books people are reading and would like to read more of. For example, if the research reveals that people like reading about history and mythology, then a commissioning editor will get writers to write books on the subject. The editor will work closely with them, advising them at every stage. Most editors also assist with cover ideating, publicity and marketing. FREEDIGITALPHOTOS.NET

He settles into his chair and picks up one. His day has just begun. Chatterjee is a commissioning editor for Penguin Books. Every publishing house has a commissioning editor – a person who decides which manuscript gets made into a book and which doesn’t.

A degree in English is the standard requirement… BUT degrees in cognate subjects like history, sociology, etc that require good language skills are also acceptable. Serious fiction alone is not published because commercial interests are important too, so a degree in any field – arts, science or commerce – is acceptable as well. Media studies programmes that teach editing, publishing and writing are good preparatory courses.

Read: Be ready to read and read and read. Commissioning editors go through multiple manuscripts daily. Ideate: Study the typical reader and come up with ideas for a book. Manage: Study the sales, stock levels and demands of previously published books. Any time a book needs to be reprinted, take a call. Work with writers: Contact writers and work with them systematically. Work with numbers: Work hand-in-hand with the administrative, finance and budgeting teams of the publishing house. Have an eye for a good story: Pick up stories, ideas and feedback from book fairs, conferences and events.

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

India is getting to know book and magazine publishing better as this industry is still growing. The pay may vary from one publishing house to the next. Freshers with no prior experience can expect a salary of `1.2 to 2 lakhs per annum, and people with an experience of two years and above can expect `3.5 to 4 lakhs per annum. These amounts usually vary with experience and position. However, Chatterjee adds, “If you’re looking to become a millionaire, this is not the job for you.”

The job of the commissioning editor is very intense. The editor needs to stay on top of multiple projects at most times. “It’s important to see that the lists of books you handle are given equal rigour and attention,” says Amish Raj Mulmi, Assistant Commissioning Editor at Hachette Book Publishing. There are perks like attending book launches, book fairs and conferences, but the job itself is exacting. “Other challenges include ensuring that each one of your authors is well taken care of, that their queries are addressed promptly and efficiently,” adds Mulmi.

E X PERT SPE A K “I think internships are the ideal way for students to break into the industry. It will give them first-hand work experience as well as a tangible idea of how the publishing industry functions. All publishing houses are on a regular lookout for interns. Penguin hires editorial interns on a regular basis throughout the year. I stumbled into publishing not knowing what exactly to expect. It’s been more than three years and I have no regrets.” - Ambar Sahil Chatterjee, Commissioning Editor, Penguin Books

“A good way to break into the industry would be to apply for summer internships, which allows students to understand how publishing works. Most companies take in summer interns, including Hachette India. One needs to love books, and must love to read.” - Amish Raj Mulmi, Assistant Commissioning Editor, Hachette Book Publishing

Is print dying? It is almost dead abroad, but the publishing industry in India is expanding. English readership is evolving, along with other regional language publishing. Online media has taken the prestigious place of the print industry, what with the rise of e-books. But Chatterjee says, “Although it is too early to determine what shape the future of publishing will take, one can expect it to continue expanding.” It’s not just about reading books, after all. But then, creating a book right from the scratch, ideating and then publishing your ideas – what more can a book lover ask for? yi JUNE 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 39

The ground work for management entrance tests in the form of expanding and reinforcing your vocabulary, speeding up reading and revising high school mathematical concepts should begin straight away and must run while you hunt for a job and even after you start working. You should aim to get at least two years of work experience after your graduation before you embark on a full-time MBA programme as it is recommended you have that amount of professional experience before the course. If you are unsure of self-study and would like to opt for formal coaching for the MBA entrance tests, take it up after a year of work experience.

European B-schools are popular on account of their shorter MBA programmes (12-18 months’ duration). However, the students admitted to such programmes are usually graduates with more than five years of work experience after graduation. In many cases they have around six or seven years of work experience. Hence, applying for such programmes after two or three years of work experience after graduation would not be advisable. It would be advisable to gather work experience in a function or industry that would be relevant for placement after you finish the MBA.

began drinking when I was 16. Six months later, I started taking drugs. My drug addiction began with marijuana and cocaine, but later I started using various other drugs like LSD, morphine, anything that my friends said would give me a high and anything that I could get my hands on. My addiction lasted for five years.

EXPERIMENTS WITH DRUGS

My first experience with alcohol was right after my class 10 board exams. I decided to go out and celebrate with a few friends. It was evident that my capacity to drink was far more than theirs; they would drink about half a glass of beer and I’d manage to have two glasses or more quite easily. The

I BEGAN TO STEAL FROM MY OWN HOUSE

I decided to go to a college in Kerala. I ended up spending most of my time drinking and smoking. I barely attended college and my studies suffered. I would end up sending counterfeit report cards at home so that my parents wouldn’t know what I was really doing at college. I lost out on five precious years of my education. If I was not blacking out or passed out, I was definitely drunk and high. I began to steal from my own house and when I couldn’t find money, I would hit my mother and force her to give me some. My own family members stopped trusting me and I lost all my close friends.

JOURNEY TO REHAB

I was aware of the fact that I was slowly getting addicted. I would tell myself every night that it was my last drink, my last smoke and the last day I would be addicted. But the next day I would succumb to my addiction. However I never thought of approaching anyone to overcome my drinking or drug problem. It was my parents who decided to send me to rehab.

RESISTING HELP

While I was being taken to Hope Trust, I resisted and yelled. I had this misconception that addicts were given pills that would turn them into psychos. I did not co-operate with the doctors there. The doctors at the rehab center told me that I was 21, but I had the heart of a 41 year old. This shocked me deeply. After my system was cleared of all the drugs and alcohol, the withdrawal symptoms started appearing and I was frustrated. Then I realised that the doctors were in fact only trying to help. The overall experience was

motive to drink was initially the need to feel ‘grown up’ and behave like an adult. One more reason to drink was to be socially accepted [since] I was not in my comfort zone at college. My peers introduced me to drugs. The feeling of smoking a drug filled a void, a sense of emptiness in me.

positive. I stayed in rehab for four and a half months.

MY BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT

The first time that I attended a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting, I realized that I could give staying clean a shot. It was at NA that I was told, “We will love you until you start loving yourself.” I gained strength from the stories of other people at the rehab center and challenged my own ability to overcome my addiction.

LIFE AFTER REHAB

Life is simpler after coming out of rehab. I have been able to completely avoid both drugs and alcohol by filling my day with activities like attending college, studying, going to the gym and playing basketball. I also use my time to meet cousins and friends with whom I had lost touch. I have an extremely tight schedule so there is no free time where I can even think of going out for a drink. I try my best to avoid situations where there may be alcohol or people taking drugs. I use NA’s motto of HALT – Hunger, Angry, Lonely, and Tired. This motto teaches addicts how to abstain from drugs when they are in any of the aforementioned situations. Whenever I feel the urge to drink or take drugs, I talk to my parents or to my colleagues at NA who help me restore my faith in myself.

ADVICE FOR YOUNGSTERS

People say that your peer group or your friend circle is the reason you take up smoking or drinking. I don’t think this is completely true. Even if majority of your friends are addicted to something, you can still hold your ground. I strongly feel that the media has a great influence on how youngsters perceive drugs and alcohol and that films promote addiction to an extent. Drugs that I considered to be my best friend turned out to be my worst enemy. If you have started doing drugs and think you are in control, think again. You may need a reality check. yi

Usually it is difficult to distinguish normal teenage moodiness from signs of drug use or alcohol addiction. Hope Trust India lists truancy, changes in friend circles, neglect of appearance, extreme isolation, red eyes, disturbed sleep patterns and change in appetite as a few warning signs.

HOW TO HELP AN ADDICT

 Prepare yourself to be a support system. Put your own self-care and sanity first.  Set an appropriate example – never drink or smoke in front of a friend who is an addict.  Stop reacting to their emotional outbursts or tantrums. Keep the focus on the addict. Screaming and losing your temper draws attention towards you.  Give an ultimatum such as ‘Go into rehab or I won’t be part of your life anymore’ but don’t resort to bullying. Give ultimatums only if you can enforce boundaries with your loved one.  Leave them or detach yourself emotionally temporarily till they stop using drugs and consuming alchohol.  Don’t project the image of rehab with a negative tone, don’t equate it with going to jail. Encourage them to visit a counsellor.

_STUDENT SPEAK

How did a career in dubbing begin for you? I had zero knowledge about the dubbing industry [and] dubbing wasn’t even considered a career option. I never took any training. I used to mimic Bollywood celebrities and popular cartoons. In 2000, I participated in a dance reality show where I was asked to mimic a few actors. The response was fantastic and that’s when I was approached by a famous dubbing director. What was your very first dubbing project? Can you remember how you felt when you first stepped into the recording booth? My first project was Buzz Lightyear of the Star Command for Disney Hour on Sony in 2001. On the first day I was a bit nervous. The director was extremely sweet. She showed me a few clips of the show and told me how to go about it. The script was in Hindi and for an eight-year-old it was difficult to understand a few words. But I [had] a wonderful team. I was thrilled to stand behind the mic, wear the headphones (which didn’t fit my head that time) and dub for one of my favourite shows. After completing the dub, I got my first ever salary.

Speaking in

voices Priya Adivarekar, who has just finished studies in journalism, has been a dubbing artist since she was 8. She talks to Youth Inc about lending her voice to the Hindi dubs of films like ‘Bolt’ and for stars like Demi Lovato

Do you mimic the original voice in the Hindi dub or do you have your own take on what the character should sound like? In most cases, I don’t get a chance to watch the episode or film in advance as they are new releases. But there are times when the director insists I watch at least one episode (in case of a series) or a scene to understand the character. For most of my projects, I didn’t have to mimic anyone. I was just asked to be myself. But voice modulation is always necessary. Also, there were projects where I was required to sound slightly younger or older. 44 Youth Incorporated ║ JUNE 2013

What characters have you dubbed for? I got an amazing response for my character Pia in the Hindi version of Disney’s Bolt. The original voice was done by Miley Cyrus. I was also the voice of teen sensation Demi Lovato in the series Sonny with a Chance and films like Camp Rock [and] Princess Protection Program. Other projects include the Tinkerbell movie series, The Lion King 2, Minnie’s Bow Toons, How to Train Your Dragon (movie and series), Ice Princess 2 and many more. I have also given voiceovers for a couple of advertisements. What was your most high-profile project? Bolt has been the best project. It was huge, because it got a theatrical release and Miley Cyrus had dubbed for the original version. I was told that I was selected for this role because my voice is very similar to Miley’s. I remember dubbing one day before my HSC board exams. We finished recording the entire film (my part) in just four hours. I couldn’t stop smiling when I saw my name in the end credits on the big screen. A lot of times people feel that a dub in another language takes away the charm of the film. What are your thoughts? Not really. Voice-over artists in India always try their best to match up to the standard of their western counterparts, and in some cases do a better job. Some

jokes do fall flat, but that cannot be helped. The script writers try their best to replace it with something good. Dubbed films have a target audience [who] are happy with the result because they get a chance to watch an English film and understand [it]. The overall box office collection of dubbed films is really good. For all those who aspire to be a dubbing artist, what advice would you give them? If you can modulate your voice, act behind the mic [and] be expressive, you should try your luck at dubbing. Be prepared to spend hours in the recording studio, repeating lines and sometimes even coming back for a session on script corrections. Watch some shows, keep the channel on mute and try doing some fun voice-overs at home (I keep imitating Shin Chan all the time). I think dubbing has come a long way. The industry has grown so much. Several shows are being dubbed, not only in Hindi, but also in other Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu and Marathi. People can look at it as a career option, but I personally feel it is better off as a part-time career. Everything depends on your voice and the kind of characters available. There might be days where you won’t have anything to do. But as a student, it has definitely helped my savings and got me a lot of recognition. Plus, I enjoy what I am doing. yi

ONE MOVIE YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE DUBBED: Any of the Disney princess films, especially Beauty and the Beast HOW RICH IS VOICE DUBBING MAKING YOU? Enough to keep my savings account and parents happy ANY CELEBRITY/ACTOR YOU’D LIKE TO WORK WITH: Amitabh Bachchan because he has a powerful voice. Shahid Kapoor – he can mimic people really well. From the west, working with Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams is my dream. THE RIGHT FOOD FOR YOUR VOICE: I stay away from ice creams, cold water and aerated drinks. A glass of warm water with honey and lime always helps. Ginger powder (with a pinch of powdered sugar for those who find it spicy) is also great. BIG NO-NOS FOR A VOICE ARTIST: Don’t be late for your recording, avoid overacting, stay away from all things cold and stay grounded, no matter how big or famous you are IF YOUR LIFE WERE TO BE NARRATED, WHOSE VOICE SHOULD NARRATE IT? Shahrukh Khan – his voice [would] suit my ‘oh-sodramatic’ life story ONE PERSON WHOSE VOICE SHOULD ALWAYS BE DUBBED OVER: Katrina Kaif and Nargis Fakhri, unless they play a character where their accent is a must JUNE 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 45

hen did you first realise you had supernatural abilities?

When I was six years old I started developing a rare intuition. I discovered that when people think, they transmit. But not many people are receivers. So I had to find a way to receive that information. I read a lot from books on psychology, body language, non-verbal communication and underground psychology. Eventually I developed my talents through formal and non-formal education techniques.

You mentioned you have ADD. How does the disorder play a role in your work as a supernatural entertainer?

at all. I only do things for positive outcomes.

Has there ever been an instance of an audience member freaking out during your routine?

Yes, yes, definitely. Every show is different and once in a while someone in the audience freaks out and goes, “OH MY GOD!” It’s so funny for everyone and I like to take advantage of it because I’m also a comedian, I’m not just

a mentalist. I have seen every reaction that you can think of; people have cried, people have screamed and much more.

Can you predict an important world event right now?

No, no, I can’t predict. I don’t believe in fortune-telling because I believe you control your own destiny. I don’t believe there is

My show is not just me standing on stage and doing mind tricks. If it was, then people would say, “Okay, so you do mind tricks, what else?” But I love to perform and interact with people and part of the show is the interaction. If somebody screams something, I answer them immediately. The ADD allows me to divert from the show and entertain the audience every now and then.

Have you attempted putting audience members into a trance?

No, I’m not a hypnotist. I don’t use hypnotics. I use energy and the power of the mind for mind reading and influencing. But I don’t do hypnotics 46 Youth Incorporated ║ JUNE 2013

LIOR’S PASSING THOUGHTS

anyone who can accurately tell you what is going to happen in the future. Some of the stuff that I do can come across as a prediction but it is just about intuition.

A celebrity’s mind you would like to read

Films and shows have depicted a mentalist curing a person’s fear of flying using telepathy. Do you utilise any such influencing techniques?

With my abilities, I work as a freelancer with companies and develop unique shows based on infotainment; a combination of information and entertainment. For example, you may be wearing a watch which you have had for two years, but if I ask you whether the watch has Arabic or Roman numerals, you wouldn’t be able to answer without looking at it. But if I ask you, what you were doing when you heard about the terror attack on the twin towers in New York over 11 years ago, you will remember. This is because it is connected to something big, an emotional impact. I design my shows around a company’s products. I take the key messages and create metaphors in my acts which create an emotional impact for the audience to remember the brand.

Which celebrity have you enjoyed performing for the most?

My good friend Gerard Butler. We became very good friends because I love his reactions. When he saw my act, he screamed, “I cannot believe this!”

Barack Obama

Suchard and David Beckham (right)

Which is the most challenging of all your techniques?

Everything is challenging, nothing is easy. I do multiple shows and it takes a lot of energy. Utilising my mind power is very tiring too. I have to practice a lot and do tests and experiments. I try things, sometimes I fail and sometimes I succeed. But I never give up.

Back to the Future

How do your abilities in telepathy help you in everyday life?

It definitely helps. I can understand if someone is lying to me or being honest in a simple conversation. But I can also shut off my abilities when I don’t want to use them.

Are you religious?

I believe in God; I’m Jewish. But I’m not religious. I’m just a regular person like anybody else. I just know how to use my brain in a different way and I’m a good stage person.

Can one train to become a mentalist or is it a talent you have to be born with?

I always say that anyone can learn to play the piano but not everyone can be Beethoven. So you can learn some elements [of being a mentalist] but it doesn’t mean you can directly step on stage and perform.

Favourite hobby

Playing the piano and guitar

Your message to sceptics

I love you and I hope you come to my show because you will enjoy it whether you believe it or not

Any message for the youth?

Always think happy thoughts because you never know who is reading your mind. yi

Off The

Field

Reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Watching Entourage and The Avengers and Three Idiots Listening to A.R. Rahman Eating Anything my mom cooks Playing PS3 FIFA. The best game ever!

In a country where sports equals cricket, how did you take up football as a profession? I never decided I wanted to take it as a profession; I used to play it just for fun. When I first played for the country, which was under-17 India team, my only motive was to get a certificate and get into St Stephen’s in Delhi. I think I was just an average student who got 70-75% so for me it was very important to play for India to get into St Stephen’s. I never thought that I was going to be a professional one day. But in due course, I played the Durand Cup for City Club in Delhi and Mohun Bagan saw me. They gave me a call and I had to give trials and then finally I realised that this is a profession I can do well at. Have you ever gotten into an on-field incident which you have regretted? If you have seen my performances before the last two years, I had a very bad issue with temper. But the last two years have been a total change. I was always quite clever, I never got caught so I never had to regret as far as any decision is concerned. But I do regret saying a lot of things, I do regret going for a lot of tackles and I

I was the the backbencher, the one who was pulling everybody’s leg. Then suddenly I was made the captain.

have actually gone up to all of them and said sorry. But I have never been caught, I’ve never got a red card in my career. But it happens. One day something might get triggered and I might do something silly. To give you an example, if in a World Cup final [Zinedine] Zidane, can do that stuff [headbutt a player] then you can imagine. It’s just a blood rush, just the situation in the game and can turn into something ugly. Are you superstitious? Do you follow any ritual before your games? I don’t have any ritual but before a game, if I drop anything accidentally then I am almost certain that I am going to score. I know it sounds very stupid but I think to myself every time ‘You cannot do it purposely’. And I never do it purposely. Some day or the other it happens that I drop something while having a bath or drinking tea, and automatically I think ‘Today I’m going to score’. And 90% of the time it has happened. You have managed 40 goals in 69 competitive games for the national team. Which is your most memorable goal? That is a very difficult thing to answer (laughs). But if I could point out some of them – my first goal against Pakistan will always be memorable; the hat trick against Kazakhstan in the AFC Challenge Cup; the goal against Maldives in the semi finals of the SAFF Cup; the penalty against Cameroon in the finals of the Nehru Cup. These are the most memorable ones but when you play for the country, every goal is important. You will not remember your club goals no matter how many of them you

have scored. But when you score for your country, you always remember them. You are 3 goals away from breaking Baichung Bhutia’s international scoring record. What do you think about reaching that milestone? I don’t know. Because whenever I think about my national team goals, I never thought that when I am 28 I will be scoring 40 goals, not in my wildest dreams. The only thing that I want is to be fit, to stay injury free and to play as well as I can for the country. I’ve already played 69 games and I think only Baichung bhai is in the 100 club in appearances for the country. In the history of Indian football, there’s only one guy who has played 100 matches for the country, so you know how difficult it is. That is one feat that I am really chasing. I would say playing 100 matches for the country is something which will be very, very pleasing and a big milestone for me. When you stepped into the shoes of Baichung Bhutia as the Indian team captain, what challenges did you face? When I became the national team captain, I was very happy and I felt very honoured and privileged. But then, I’m probably saying this for the first time, I got lost. I was the one who was the backbencher, the one who was pulling everybody’s leg. Steven [Dias] and I were the prank-masters of the team. Then suddenly I was made the captain. I found myself in a place where I had to behave to set an example, not only on the field but off the field also. So I was lost. But now slowly and steadily I am learning.

How has the atmosphere in the dressing room changed since you took over? Right now if you ask me, we are in a transition period; there are a lot of juniors and I just hope I can be a good teammate and leader to them. We are all trying to learn something about each other and that makes my job a little more difficult since I have to bind the team well. I’m trying my best to do that. I feel that as fast as we can do that, we’ll be a better team. You helped the Indian team rise up 24 spots in the February 2013 FIFA rankings. At the end of your career, where do you hope to see India placed? I haven’t thought about it because I never thought that I have to take my country to such a level or such a ranking. The only thing that came to my mind was, let’s go to the team and make it a better team. Now that we have reached 145, it is a process, it doesn’t stop here. It is very important for us to play a lot of international friendlies. I definitely believe India is much better than 145. Does the poor infrastructure for football in the country and lack of backing from regulatory bodies frustrate you? I have been frustrated for nine-ten years now, but it has never helped. One thing that I’ve realised is that if a coach is frustrated, if the players are frustrated, if the AIFF is frustrated, if the fans have given up, if the media don’t want to telecast the games, it won’t help. We have pointed fingers at each other a lot of times now and it’s enough. In India we do have money and interest in football, no doubt. It’s just that we have to do our jobs properly, and I’m sure the day is not far when we are going to make huge progress in football.

To think about when India is going to play in the football World Cup is like chasing a dream, a task which is too high right now What are India’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup? I think the chances of seeing the Indian under-17 team play in the 2017 World Cup is high, because we might host it. To understand when India is going to play the senior world cup, we have to understand that we are 20 or 21st in Asia [FIFA rankings] right now. To have any realistic chance of qualifying for the World Cup, we have to come in the first ten. To think about when India is going to play in the football World Cup is like chasing a dream, a task which is too high right now. And being the captain of the nation right now, I have no qualms saying that. If we are in the first ten [teams] of Asia, then we have an easy chance of becoming something in the world stage.

Why does Indian football seem to lack the standard of international competitors? The quality will not be there [if we continue to play matches in the afternoon] because it is impossible for anyone to run and to perform at the best of their ability at 40 degrees. Even if you bring Messi or Ronaldo [to play in India], they will not be able to play with the same intensity [as they usually do]. If you saw Borussia Dortmund running against Real Madrid or Bayern Munchen chasing after Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals – I would bet any amount of money they wouldn’t be able to do the same thing at 3 pm in Kolkata under the heat. What do you think needs to be done to improve the current state of football in India? The clubs who invest so much money in India now should really go and get their own grounds. They can have their own matches at their own timings. If five teams in a state play on the same ground, the ground maintenance goes for a toss. But if every team has their own field, play at 8 in the evening and build their own fan base, people will want to come to see the match. The Ten Sports TRP goes sky-

teams to understand this; if you want to make the present I-League better, every match has to be [at] 7:30 pm. Then both the crowd and the match broadcasters will come.

Even if you bring Messi or Ronaldo [to play in India], they will not be able to play with the same intensity

high because at 1 am in India, kids, girls, boys, old, young, everybody wants to watch Champions League. So if those people are brought to the ground [for I-League matches] at 7 o’clock in the evening, given some incentive, given some safety and good facilities, they will come. Do you think Indian football needs a tournament on the lines of the IPL to increase the popularity of the sport? I think we have to make the existing tournament [I-League] a tournament like that. If there is a Mohun Bagan match, there are 100,000 people coming to Salt lake Stadium; doesn’t matter what time and the kind of atmosphere. In Delhi, when we played the Nehru Cup, it wasn’t properly advertised. Still there were 20,000 people who had come to see the final. People do want to come and see the matches, it’s just the right marketing and the right timings. It’s very important for the I-League

What are you doing personally to improve the quality and popularity of football in the country? Right now as a player, the only thing I can do, and I have always tried to do, is give as much as I can for my club and my country. I think I am somebody who is very passionate and wants football to do well in India. As the captain of the nation, I try my best on the field as well as off the field. In time I will be getting into academic stuff or something like that. I do not have a definite path of how I am going to do it; whichever way I can, I will do it. You were the first Indian footballer to play professionally for a Major League Soccer club (Kansas City) in USA. Tell us about the experience of playing against Manchester United. Oh, that was massive, man. We had a friendly against them and if you know Manchester United, no match is friendly for them. It was a game that I played for 30 minutes. I was supposed to get one half but [since] we got a red card I was brought in a little bit late. We won the match 2-1 and it always will be one of the best memories of my life. We really played our skin out as a team and we beat Manchester. And sharing the field with the likes of Giggs, Scholes, Nani, Rooney was excellent and something I am going to cherish all my life. Whenever I think about it or watch videos of the match, I always feel good about it.

You were set to play in England for Lakshmi Mittal’s team Queens Park Rangers in 2009 but a work permit stood in your way. Does it bother you that Indians have been investing in foreign lands instead of their own country? At the end of the day, it’s their prerogative, it’s what they want. But as a football fan, I would love to see a lot of investors coming to Indian football. The McDowell’s group have been there for the last 20 years. Now I have heard that Mr. Jindal is coming to the I-League. It’s always good when big popular houses want to come and invest in the I-League. I would like to see an Indian owning a club on foreign soil but I would be happier if there were investors owning teams in India only. Why did you decide to return to India after signing for a reputed team like Sporting Lisbon? When I signed for Sporting Clube de Portugal, I believed that I am not at the same level – not only in terms of skill, in terms of mentality, the pace and everything. I worked my a** off, everything humanly possible. I reached a place where I thought ‘Now I do deserve a chance’. But what happened in the B-team is, if from Monday to Friday you work hard and are about to get a chance, on Saturday you get news that four-five players from the A-team are sent to the B-team. And when players from A-team are sent to the B-team, they have to be played. It happened almost every week and I used to get so disappointed because I used to work so hard to get into the team. I had a talk with the owner and the coaches that it was not fair. I knew the chances of me playing in the A-team

was more than the B-team but without proving yourself in the B-team, you can’t go to the A-team. So I was really getting frustrated because even though I was training really hard and doing well in the trainings, I was not getting enough match time. I took a very hard decision that I have to come back to the country and play in the I-League. Will you return to Europe to play? I have a two-year long deal left with Sporting [Lisbon] so after the league finishes over here, I will talk to them again. I will ask them properly and in writing as to what they think about me and if I am satisfied with what they say and what they think about me, only then will I take the plunge. How many years of football do you think you have left in you? I think I am definitely going to shock and amaze myself because this is something that

I feel really, really passionate about. This is something that I want to keep doing. I know there are certain limitations when you reach a certain age. But I want to go as long as I can. There will come a time when I can’t, and I don’t know which year it’s going to be or what age I am going to be at the time when I call it quits, but now the day is very, very far because I am really someone who wants to work hard and keep playing. Do you think you would have a successful career as an actor in Bollywood or TV shows? Actually, I was offered Jhalak Dikhla Jaa for two years continuously but I couldn’t do it for some or the other issues. One day, I might. I don’t know. As a player, you never plan these things, it just happens. If one day it happens and if at that time I’m in a frame of mind that I want to do it then I will do it.

When I signed for Sporting Clube de Portugal, I believed that I am not at the same level What would you say to budding sportspersons to convince them to choose football over other sports? I would tell them to choose what they want to choose. My parents never forced me to take football. First of all, it’s very important for a kid to understand what he or she wants. If you want to be a guitarist and you are forced to take a cricket ball or a football, you will go nowhere. Only when you enjoy something you will excel in it, especially when it comes to sports. yi JUNE 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 55

A Guide to Desi

Being hipster is no longer hipster. Nainika Agrawal tells you more about mainstream hipsterdom in India A cool hat is likely to be part of their look

Spunkily styled facial hair which you are unlikely to have seen before. Their hair is likely to be untidy

One piece of their outfit looks like it was stolen from a parent or a grandparent’s closet

Large, nerdy spectacle frames (without the lenses, if they don’t actually need glasses) are almost a given

Hatke frock made from an old cut-up sari. With skinny jeans. Yes, to them it is okay to wear frock AND jeans

DEFINITON OF A HIPSTER Hipsterdom – the origins

The modern context of the term ‘hipster’ started off as a label for people with peculiar dressing and living habits in gentrified New York City suburbs, and became a more global term as these trends spread across the world.

\hip-stur\n:

Someone who thinks their cool because they aren't "mainstream" but in reality have become mainstream by trying not to be mainstream. A paradox in and of itself. - Urban Dictionary

‘Hipster’ describes someone whose way of living and thinking is different from that of the majority. In other words, it is supposed to mean the opposite of ‘mainstream’. However, ironically, being hipster has now become mainstream itself. But not to worry – irony is very greatly appreciated among hipsters! Originally, hipsterdom was more

of an international phenomenon, but hipsters are becoming easier and easier to spot in our very own Bharat. One can spot these people at one of the coffee shops in Hauz Khas Village in Delhi, or at Mumbai live music scenes like Blue Frog and Hard Rock Café, or in miscellaneous thrift shops or indie bookstores.

In Dubai, the mall experience is not restricted to shopping. From diving with sharks in Dubai Mall to skiing in -2 degrees Celsius at Mall of the Emirates, the indoor experience in Dubai is never claustrophobic. You will find plenty of adventure options both for the weak-hearted as well as the seasoned adventure junkies. For instance, iFLY, located in Midriff City Mall, introduces you to the thrill of skydiving through a 2-minute session in a wind tunnel. Giant fans situated below the chamber will have you airborne and spinning around. The session ends with mutliple acrobatic leaps and plunges (this is when your instructor takes control). You’ll step out with a pounding heart and irrepressible smile. TRAVEL TIPS iFLY, Midriff City Mall: First-time flyers pay 215 AED (`3,225) for 2 minutes. You can also opt for one-on-one skydiving lessons with an instructor. Ski Dubai, Mall of the Emirates: Passes start from 140 AED (`2100). Main attractions: ski slope, chairlift rides and giant snow ball (xorbing). Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, Dubai Mall: Passes start from 55 AED (`825). A structure 828 meters tall dominates not only the Dubai skyline but also the rest of the world. Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world is a sight you cannot and should not miss while in Dubai. In fact, you can also buy a ticket to visit the top of this mammoth structure. A lift ride that barely lasts a minute takes you to the 124th floor of the Burj Kalifa (the highest point accessible to the public). At the top, you are led to the observation deck – a glass panelled section with stunning views of the city. TRAVEL TIPS Entry to the Bhurj Khailfa is from the Dubai Mall, which incidentally is the largest mall in the world. Make sure you visit the dancing fountain shows (again, the largest in the world) outside Dubai mall from 6 pm onwards at half hour intervals. Book your tickets in advance because immediate entry to the top costs 400 AED (`5,900), while booked tickets cost 95 AED (`1,400).

BARACK OBAMA IS A DISASTER AT BOWLING

Barack Obama is a good basketball player, but he is terrible at bowling. Out of a maximum score of 300, he scored only 37 at a bowling alley in 2008 while running for President. A journalist commented, “He bowls like my four-and-a-half-year-old daughter.” Ouch. Obama attempted to poke fun at himself by saying, “It was like Special Olympics.” Double ouch. Needless to say, he had to apologise to the Special Olympics chairperson. AP/ALEX BRANDON

JOSH HUTCHERSON IS A KLUTZ AROUND GIRLS

Josh Hutcherson aka Peeta Mellark of Hunger Games may be a charmer on-screen, but in real life he gets awkward around girls like any other guy. In a magazine interview he said, “I was on a date, and we were sitting at dinner I tried to put my arm around her; I was doing the yawn thing where you lift your arms up. As I did that, I hit the table and spilled a drink.” There’s a lesson here, boys. When in doubt, don’t yawn.

In 2009 Priyanka Chopra had a brush with anonymity, regular person-style… and seemingly didn’t like it. She was denied entry to Shahid Kapoor’s birthday party because her name was not on the list. She was stopped at the gate and had to wait for some agonising minutes until another guest recognised her and convinced the guards to let her in.

Sure, celebrities look perfect thanks to makeup, but even makeup malfunctions. When American singer Etta James passed away last year, Christina Aguilera was invited to the funeral. While she was performing a tribute song, brown streaks started running down her legs. Twitter was immediately abuzz with speculations and jokes about what those streaks were. A source close to Aguilera later said the streaks were spray tan that mixed with her sweat and ran down.

GEORGE BUSH THINKS HE’S FRIENDLY, BUT IS ACTUALLY CREEPY

While there are innumerable Bushisms that have marked George Bush’s Presidential reign, we are particularly tickled by the time he gave his ‘friend’, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, an unasked-for neck rub at the G-8 summit in 2006. Merkel looked uncomfortable and pushed his hands away. Comedian Jon Stewart joked, “The Chancellor of Germany disengaged herself…using a move she learned in date rape prevention class.” Being unfriended is a thing among politicians too.

FERGIE GETS ON STAGE… AND PEES HER PANTS

In 2005, fans of the Black Eyed Peas were treated to a little more than the band’s music. They were also treated to band member Fergie’s wild bladder. In the middle of the song Let’s Get It Started, Fergie peed into her pants, which became instantly visible. She later admitted that this incident still embarrasses her. “We had to rush onstage before I had the chance to go to the restroom,” she explained. There’s a reason why adult diapers were invented, Fergie. FLICKR USER METHODSHOP.COM

If you thought being tagged in whacky pictures is bad enough, consider what happens to celebrities. In 2009, a picture of Miley Cyrus and a group of friends pulling a slant-eye pose that looked ‘Asian’ was leaked to the internet. A spokesman for the Organisation of Chinese American said, “Not only has Miley Cyrus…encouraged and legitimised the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American friends.” Cyrus responded angrily on her website that she and her friends were just making “goofy faces” and not “making fun of any ethnicity”. What do you think?

Charlie Sheen’s dismissal from Two and a Half Men was a WTF series of incidents, but it proved that badmouthing the boss can get anyone fired, even celebs. In 2011, Sheen made derogatory statements about the show’s creator Chuck Lorre, calling him “a stupid little man” and “that piece of sh*t”. This got Sheen fired from the show, but it didn’t end his bizarre behaviour. He called himself a “warlock” with “tiger blood” and said, “The only thing I’m addicted to is winning.” That wasn’t the end either, but I’ll stop here because I’ve made my point.

JUSTIN BIEBER HAS A GASTRONOMIC ACCIDENT

When it comes to on-stage humiliation, Justin Bieber takes the cake. In September last year, Bieber threw up not once, but twice, during a concert in Arizona, USA. The first was right on stage. In the middle of a song, Bieber turned his back to the audience and hurled. The second was slightly more elegant: he rushed backstage in the middle of a song to take care of his tummy troubles. He tweeted after the show, “Milk was a bad choice! Lol.” Cows, take note. yi JUNE 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 65

WHICH EARPHONES TO BUY?

 CREATIVE EP-630 EARPHONE IN-THE-EAR HEADPHONE (`930) Pros:

Once you up the decibel, you’ll get a truly gratifying music experience. The bass and treble on this earphone easily outperforms its competitors. Unlike the offering from other brands, comes in a variety of colours. Also, a warranty with the earphone.

 SENNHEISER MX 270 HEADPHONE (`890) Pros:

The build quality of the MX 270 ensures that it has a longer duration than what you expect from normal earphones. You get a 2-year warranty with the earphone.

Cons:

It has decent bass but if you’re a hardcore rock fan, you may want to look elsewhere.

Cons:

The build quality isn’t all that great and raises doubts about its durability. Vulnerable to a quick end unless you take very good care of it.

 SKULLCANDY S2INCZ-033 (`990) Pros:

This earphone stands out on the basis of its looks alone. Doesn’t get entangled that easily. Its subtle bass and treble ensures that it plays most kinds of music perfectly.

Cons:

Durability isn’t one of its stronger points as its build is susceptible to damage.

 JBL TEMPO IN-THE-EAR J01U HEADPHONE (`899) Pros:

Vocals are an absolute delight to hear on these earphones. The sound quality of the JBL Tempo gives you value for your money.

Cons:

This isn’t the best in its class when it comes to bass. The build of this earphone isn’t sturdy by any mile and ranks low on durability.

FINAL VERDICT: Considering its performance in different genres of music as well as its bass and treble quality, we would suggest going with the Creative EP-630 earphone. However, if your usage is the rough and tough kind, we recommend the Sennheiser MX 270. 70 Youth Incorporated ║ JUNE 2013

_RELATIONSHIPS

TEXTUALLY

Razi Shaikh examines flirting in the digital age through tweets, Facebook posts and BB status updates which hide as much as they reveal

As you read this, you’ll be aware that  One of your friends just broke-up  One is on the verge of breaking up  One is on the verge of declaring his love And all this is probably happening online right now. Here are the dos and don’ts of flirting in the digital age.

MEETING UP?

Old school: The first step mandatory to any attempt at having a relationship – you need to know each other. Now, in the good old times, people had to muster courage to ask someone their name, class and stuff to their face. Hard times, eh? Digital flirting: Make use of the friend request on Facebook. Even if you’ve never spoken to each other face-to-face, there’s no reason not to do so in the virtual world. Once that friend request gets accepted, it paves the way forward. You can then see their profile, their posts and you know flirting has never been easier.

PICK UP LINES

Old school: We’re not saying that they’ve completely fallen off the radar – Barney Stinson’s existence is proof of the power of pick up lines. But carrying them in the virtual world in their bare avatar may end up hurting you a lot; you know, a line like ‘you may fall from the sky, you may fall from a tree but the best way to fall…is in love with me’ is never going to work online. Digital flirting: Message something like that and you’ll creep the hell out of him/her. Instead, do it the subtle way. Drop a thoughtful comment on his/her profile picture, something like, ‘If that image isn’t photogenic, I don’t know what is.’

DEVIANTART USER COLOURFULNINJA

Old school: Mills & Boons has demonstrated time and again that love stories start with some flirting and that they would be totally incomplete without the exchange of gifts like flowers, chocolates, etc. Again, such social conventions haven’t died out but with the advent of social media, there are whole new avenues to do the same in a different way. Digital flirting: You need to let your crush know that you have them in your thoughts. Post a music video on their wall or make a meme dedicated to them. Send an image relevant to their interest, some links that they would like to go through. All in all, think of ways of showing your crush that you care.

The virtual world may give you the complete freedom to stalk but hanging onto that thread will do no good to your credentials. Says Pooja Patki, 18, “People have been using these sites to make friends and sometimes with the futile hope of finding a ‘soul mate’. Not to be completely pessimistic, some people do end up finding love. But half of the time, people end up as stalkers.”

SAY THANKS

Old school: Dressing right and in a way to seek the attention of your heart throb is still a must in the digital age. But here’s the scoop, your efforts just don’t end there. Digital Flirting: People are going to judge you by your profile picture. Hazy and unclear images don’t exactly work wonders, which is why you need to invest your time and effort in getting a good image.

SAFETY FIRST!

It doesn’t always need to turn out right with flirting through social media. Considering the unprecedented number of trolls residing on the internet, it’s but natural that you need to take some precautions. Says Archita Datar, 18, “Textual flirting is a growing trend in India. I guess it’s alright as long as the people indulging in it know what they’re doing and who and how the person at the other end is. But doing it for the fun of it without being aware of the repercussions is pretty dangerous.” Make sure you’ve got your privacy controls in place. If some unflattering images get leaked, you’ll be in a very tight spot.

DON HANKINS, FLICKR

Old school: Exchanging notes was the rage then among love birds twittering with excitement. And there’s no reason for the good old habits to die. Just that in today’s age the medium has undergone a slight change. Digital flirting: If you have gone on a date, make sure that you follow it up with a text expressing your gratitude towards them for taking their time. Might be old school, but showing some etiquette always helps.

 Emoticons are add-ons and not the sole message. If you’re the initiator, don’t expect to gain much by relying solely on those smileys.  You know you’re struggling when you get monosyllable replies like ‘k’. Best close the chat and exit with grace.  It’s only when you act interested in someone that you can expect them to be interested in you. Give them the talking space on chat so that he/she can free up with you.  Mind your grammar. Reading broken English and grammatical errors is no fun and is a hallmark of teens and tweens who don’t understand the importance of getting language right.  Stay selective in your interactions as too much of it can backfire. You know, replying to or retweeting all their tweets kind of gives you away. JUNE 2013 ║ Youth Incorporated 73

THE RETURN TO INNOCENCE

2

THE PERFECT POSE

If a book is judged by its cover, a social media profile is judged by its display picture. A perfect profile picture does not just happen, it has specific guidelines

1

THE GENUINE SMILE

It’s about time that people realise that posting pouting smiles and clichéd poses makes as much sense as linking your Twitter and Facebook accounts do. Instead of those depressingly overused images, go for a genuinely happy picture. That smile, you’ll be happy to know, reflects on the user viewing it as well. A ‘winning smile’ as we would term it.

74 Youth Incorporated ║ JUNE 2013

72 Relationships.indd 74

What’s more interesting than looking at a picture of someone smiling? A picture of them doing something funny. Making your profile picture work to your sense of humour will instantly get people to like you. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be funny. Just strike a good pose and make sure your winning smile is visible and you have a profile picture which is nothing short of perfect.

3

THE PARTY LOOK

This is old hat but still an effective one. If you’re the party animal kind of person who is always visiting new hangout spots and meeting cool people, then let the world know about it. You can change your profile picture every week if you get out as much. Alternate this with point number 2 and you have an excellent combo.

4

THE OFF-BEAT LOCATIONS If you really want to stand out in the overcrowded profile pictures feed, the background of your image needs to play its part too. The pre-requisite for this profile picture is to travel as much as you can and take good quality pictures at each of these locations. Make sure your face is clearly visible and there is ample view of a picturesque background in the photo.

Most of the time, using a current image of yourself is advised. The exception to this rule is when you put up a childhood picture of yourself. An image of you as a child is bound to bring out a few comments in the form of ‘aww’ and ‘so cute’. Quite a few ‘likes’ are also guaranteed, so pick your best childhood picture to upload.

JUST SAY ‘NO’ TO THESE PROFILE PICTURES If you want to be popular on social media, stay away from these image styles

 Group photos. How the hell is one supposed to notice just you when you’re swarmed by so many others?  Abstract. That’s euphemism for inconclusive and blank. Some images are way too deep and function as the virtual equivalent of the ‘Entry Restricted’ sign.  Over-editing is a bad choice. Instagram your food photos as much as you want but five effects on a photo of your face is pointless use of technology.  Any picture other than of yourself. Your picture is meant to be your identity and not the medium to some natural wildlife imagery. MODELS: MANISH USAPKAR ALIFIYA PUGAWKAR

HOW TO REDUCE UNWANTED TANNING IN SUMMER Sun protection is guarding the body from adverse effects of sunlight. Sun damage can lead to the following: - Premature wrinkling - Signs of aging - Pigmentation - Precancerous changes in the skin

D

Ways to prevent sun damage 1. Limit sun exposure between 10 am and 3 pm. 2. Wear protective clothing and a long-brimmed cap. 3. While on the beach, wear long sleeve shirts/t-shirts, caps and shades and remember to apply sunscreen.

Rules for sunscreen application 1. The ‘LY’ rule – Liberally and Religiously. Recommended times are 9 am, noon and 3 pm. 2. Apply sunscreen every 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and re-apply every 2 hours.

80 skin.indd 80

Tips for sunscreen usage 1. Always look for sunscreen with a matte finish that contains zinc oxide and titanium oxide. They give better UVB protection as they reflect the UV rays. 2. Sunscreens containing octocrylene called cinnamates, and avobenzones provide UVB+UVA protection. Sunscreens are available as creams, lotions, ointment, gel and spray. The SPF (sun protection factor) is indicated by numbers 15, 30 and 50 which denote the degree of sunburn protection.

3. Use sunscreen everyday in the summer, irrespective of stepping out in the sun (including Sundays and holidays). Remember, UV light also comes from LED lights, halogen lights and laptop screens. Keep in mind 1. Wear dense, tightly woven fabric and avoid see through material for better sun protection. 2. For even skin tone and maintainance, one can apply creams containing brightening agents at night. 3. Reduce the number of peel sessions and facial lasers as they make your skin more photosensitive, that is you become more prone to sun damage which accelerates the aging process.

Dear D, My mom keeps worrying me about my boyfriend. She says that I am too young to date at the age of 16 and that I should be conscious of my relationship and where it is heading. I’m not going to be irresponsible or anything, I mean we have only slept together once so far. What can I do to stop her nagging? – Troubled Teenager

Dear Concerned Friend, Oh no! What a catastrophe! Your best friend may find a girl he is happy being with and another of your close friends will find a guy who admires and appreciates her. We cannot let this happen. You should try sabotaging their relationship. Start by kidnapping yourself and jumping off a cliff, the shock alone should bring their relationship to an end. Less concerned, D

Dear Troubled Teenager, You do realise that your mom is just looking out for your best, right? I am hoping to dear God that you used protection that one time you indulged yourselves. If not, please don’t blab about it to dear mom or you are in for a hell of a time. My advice is to be responsible when it comes to your relationship and be patient when it comes to your mom. My best, D

DOCTOR WHO

TOUGH ON TOBACCO – BIG BIG JOKE

WATCH

This phenomenal British sci-fi TV show is the longest running of its kind. Begun in 1963, it follows the adventures of an alien time-traveller called The Doctor in his timetravelling spaceship called the TARDIS (disguised as a blue police box) with his human travel companion. The original series went off air in 1989 owing to lack of viewers, but the modern revival jumpstarted in 2005 became an instant hit. Even those who aren’t fans of sci-fi will be instantly drawn to the show for its action, creative plots, humour and subtle romance.

yi EXTRA TERRESTRIAL

PICKS

Four years after launching their debut album, veteran indie pop-rock-reggae band Tough On Tobacco have finally launched their second album. The album titled Big Big Joke is a neglected child of over three years during which time the band members focused on their individual and side projects. The result, unfortunately, is that the album material sounds terribly outdated as compared to other contemporary acts. While parts of their music have progressed towards music heavy alternative rock, most of it is their usual pop and reggae (noticable in Yahweh, Nice and Ordinary). Decent songs on the album are Blow Yourself Away and the title track Big Big Joke. The album artwork and title are nods to the band’s humorous branding. Alas, the songs could have done with some improvement.

LISTEN

Do aliens exist or are they imaginary? Blink-182 tries to convince the world of the existence of extraterrestrial neighbours with this song. Listen closely to the lyrics; they’re simple enough to follow, but they’re also so imaginative that you might just be led to an unexplored alien turf without realising it.

QUICK FIRE INTERVIEW WITH RAJORSHI CHAKRABORTI Rajorshi Chakraborti’s latest work – a collection of short stories and novellas titled Lost Men – is like an ode to bewildered characters stuck in sometimes absurd, sometimes wretched situations. All stories are narrated by male protagonists faced by life-altering situations – the latter being one of the constant themes in Chakraborti’s works. The effectively interwoven element of mystery manages to grip the reader’s attention. However, in places, the plots do seem scattered, due to the inherent nature of short stories. Hence, these anecdotes need to be taken one at a time, as they tend to be overwhelming so much, so that the reader tends to lose his way halfway through the book. It’s a good read if you can stomach fast-paced narratives and a whirlwind of activity with enough patience and attention. All your previous books have been novels. How different was it, working on the short stories in ‘Lost Men’? It was liberating, in a way, to know that I was only trying to provide one short glimpse at a time into a character and his or her world. Of course, I wanted to make that glimpse as interesting and mysterious as possible, but it is different to the planning and level of absorption that a novel demands. Although being a work of fiction, is any story from ‘Lost Men’ inspired by a books real-life incident? Some of the stories do explore a road-not-taken scenario, where I try and imagine what might have happened if a character follows a series of paths that I didn’t follow, or an important moment in life had turned out slightly differently. What if I missed my plane to come abroad the first time as a student, because I simply could not make myself get to the airport? What if I had been expelled from school at a critical moment for an honest mistake? Believe me, more than once I did get close. Phew. Not only in ‘Lost Men’, but also in your other novels, you have created situations involving paranoia, challenge, disaster, dark humour, uncertainty, etc. Any comments on this particular style of writing? No, except to say that I like those adjectives as descriptions of my work. I guess what I’ve often tried to do is create stories in which my characters have to react when life around them is particularly challenging, when they are caught up in its full flow, and I like to show how this feels to them. Another feeling I’ve tried to evoke is that of characters who find their own lives to be quite mysterious, unfamiliar, strange. How did I get to this point following that path? So, yes, your words feel like appropriate descriptions, but I would add a couple of others to the list: adventure, mystery, surprise, even occasionally, joy. - Sindhu Mansukhani Read the entire interview on www.youthincmag.com

With fluorescence lighting, a stylish décor and a huge dance floor, it has the perfect ambeince for clubgoers. The bar menu is extensive and includes a variety of innovative cocktails and mocktails, classic wines and spirits. Keep a track of overall performances to make sure that you focus on delivering results as pressing deadlines approach. If you feel the need to be more secretive about some important plans, then do so. As emotions might run high, keep a low profile and try to tone down potential problems. Don’t waste time in making decisions; rather, get going.
