Global university rankings have come to be the Bible for students looking to pursue a higher education within their country or outside. Youth Incorporated firmly believes in being the bridge that connects students to their future university by bringing to the fore a list of top universities from across the globe along with their worldwide rank. Like the past two years, this year has been no different; meticulous surveys undertaken of universities both in India and abroad have resulted in this compilation of Global University Rankings 2014. Rankings across varied universities, the streams offered, on-campus activities, extra-curricular activities and infrastructure, and current student feedback define this year’s set of rankings too. All these, we believe, are imperative when choosing an institute for higher education. As we delve into the subject of rankings across different streams, one stream that is continuing to garner attention in India is that of business management. Understanding the MBA is imperative and we thus uncover the degree and analyse its worth in the current job market. With scores of MBA graduates year after year, does the degree still hold its own or is its sheen wearing out? While the MBA degree is one of the most popular mainstream career options, there are other specialisations that are taking centre stage too. The two that we bring to light this month are jewellery designing and sports management. Previously known as mere hobbies as opposed to full-fledged careers, the two are gaining widespread popularity today. As an ode to the fairer sex this Women’s Day, we asked six talented photographers to depict the strength of a woman through their lenses. Each one of the images part of the presentation has a beautiful story of its own and is an intimate narration of women from different walks of life. 8 IELTS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS BY THE BRITISH COUNCIL UP FOR GRABS The British Council is awarding eight scholarships worth `3,00,000 each through the IELTS (International English Language Test System). This scholarship will be towards the university tuition fee. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you need to • be a resident and citizen of India • have taken the IELTS test with the British Council recently • have at least a IELTS band score of 6.0 • have a valid offer letter or letter of acceptance from a recognised institution that accepts the IELTS as part of its admission criteria • Begin an under or postgraduate programme outside India in the 2014 academic year You may apply online by first downloading the application form, filling it and sending a scanned copy to ielts.scholarship@britishcouncil.org. The last date for sending applications is 30 June 2014.
DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES SET UP BY IIT KANPUR JEE MAINS 2014 SCORES TO BE USED FOR UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING ADMISSIONS The separate CET that used to be conducted earlier in Maharashtra for first year undergraduate engineering admissions has been done away with and JEE Main’s Paper 1 marks are going to be used. The HSC marks will also be used in addition to the JEE Main’s marks for the year 2014. The JEE Main question paper is available in Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi and Urdu.
Department of Earth Sciences has been started by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur on the recommendation of the Academic Senate on 5 February 2014. The course will focus on the study of the earth, its evolution and its internal dynamics along with a study on the human induced and natural metamorphosis of the telluric environment. Rajiv Sinha has been appointed the head of department for a period of 3 years. The department has PhD programmes in earth sciences for students.

NEW FORMULA FOR GATE SCORES
PHD IN NANOSCIENCE LAUNCHED BY JNU The Special Centre for Nanoscience of the Jawaharlal Nehru University has launched a new PhD programme that specialises in the study of nanoscience. The UGC-recognised PhD programme is beginning this year with only five seats. The course will consist of one year of classroom lectures followed by four to five years of comprehensive research. Candidates should have completed their MSc in biological, physical or material sciences and should have also cleared their CSIR-UGC NET/JRF examination. Applications are open until 26 March 2014. Medical, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries mainly require nanoscience experts. Though it is still coming up as a concept and career in India, it has scope for growth.
The 2014 GATE examination was organised by IIT Kharagpur and the scores are being calculated on the basis of the following formula: GATE Score= Sq+(St-Sq)[(MMq)/ (Mt-Mq)], where M is marks achieved by the candidate Mq is the qualifying marks for a general category candidate Mt is the mean of marks of the top 10 candidates who appeared the examination Sq is 350 St is 900 The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) that was held from 1 February to the 2 of March was a series of computer based online tests. The results are scheduled to be out on the 28 March. The GATE scores are used widely as admission criteria for the Indian Institute of Technology, the Cochin University of Science and Technology, some institutes in Germany and Singapore and quite a few public sector companies.
BRITISH SCHOOLS ARE NOW OFFERING SCHOLARSHIPS WORTH `7 CRORE TO INDIAN STUDENTS A federation of leading boarding schools in the United Kingdom has been put together by the Anglo Schools International Services (ASIS) to offer seats to Indian students. Scholarships are being offered in the 25% to 100% range to interested and deserving Indian students. The ASIS has brought a change in the admission process and have created a common entrance test for all British schools for a common fee of £250. The test duration is 2 hours and can be taken until 31 March. The last date for registration is 21 March. The test is to be conducted at Pearson VUE test centres all over India. he past decade has seen the influx of a number of MBA students in the Indian and international job markets. However, a recent statistic showed that the number of applications for MBA and MMS courses has in the last year diminished by more than 50%. The reason stated for this sudden and surprising drop is believed to be the emergence of market-centric postgraduate degrees and courses.
As the MBA scene in India is going through drastic changes, there are still a number of students who choose the course year after year. While some students believe it is the only degree worth pursuing, there are others who delve into the scene with little knowledge and understanding of what it entails. The grave question amidst the MBA entrance coaching, the spending of huge sums of money on the degree and the quitting of already
well-paying jobs to pursue an MBA for better prospects is – is an MBA really worth it?
WHAT AN MBA DOES?
An MBA or a Master of Business Administration degree teaches an individual management skills, increases business and all-round knowledge, allows for market-based thinking, and acts as a CV booster while looking for a job. It is one

coursework commences. However, clearing the entrance test is not the biggest hurdle; the degree itself is one long obstacle course. Dealing with long college hours, undertaking mandatory apprenticeships, coping with an unending series of assignments and tests, and of course, having a keen interest in the degree to last you two years are some requisites that should be considered before diving head-on into an MBA. Not everyone can cope with the stress than an MBA degree comes with and hence making an informed decision is always recommended.

The first obstacle of an MBA aspirant would be the entrance test. Once this has been cleared, the rigorous MBA
There are a series of mistakes MBA aspirants make. The first is enrolling for an MBA just after graduating. A lot of thought has to go into selecting the right kind of MBA major and the college with future job prospects in mind. Jumping into an MBA without any kind of prior knowledge about what it encompasses can be detrimental as somewhere through the course a sense of boredom in the course or an interest in a field more creative might arise. A top management position in the best company and a high salary are reasons most students give for studying an MBA. That said, it is almost impossible to coach a student to be a manager within the confines of a classroom. Although extremely expensive, a number of students go through with it in the hope of recovering the money spent by means of a job on its completion. The scope of a good job after an MBA depends on varied factors, some of which include a person’s calibre, performance, competition, the job market and the reputation of the college. A MASTER’S DEGREE V/S AN MBA DEGREE
A lot of MBA aspirants who tread the MBA waters go into the course already decided on the specialisation or the subject that they wish to focus on in their second year. In that case, why not consider a master’s degree in the subject instead of an MBA? While an MBA allows for a specialisation in its second or third year, the information learnt in just a year might not be deep or sufficient enough. A master’s degree on the other hand, comprises an in depth, detailed study of a subject and is usually studied over two years. The choice between a master’s degree and the MBA must be closely associated with a student’s academic background. For a person looking to build on his/her academic subjects, a master’s degree outweighs an MBA. An MBA works for those looking to enhance a professional career or for those who wish to learn business without any kind of prior backing or education in it. yi
YI PERSPECTIVE The trend prevalent in India is to study for an MBA right after a bachelor’s degree. In truth, we think an MBA must be looked at as something that adds to a person’s credentials as opposed to something used to accelerate it. Rightfully, considering an MBA mid-way through your career would be ideal as it broadens knowledge while also accommodating on-the-job learning in the case of executive and part-time MBAs.

There are also those who jump into an MBA with the sole purpose of making more money as opposed to being motivated to actually learn about business. At some point the stress of the degree will weigh a person down leaving one utterly disappointed. The best way out is to question what kind of job you would want if it wasn’t for the money. Disruption in employment is another drawback of pursuing an MBA. This holds true for the many who quit their jobs to pursue a fulltime MBA. On an average, an MBA might amount to either one or two years; having a gap of this duration on a résumé is always a bad idea and questions a person’s willingness and effciency to undertaking a job in managerial positions in top companies.

Sports management is a specialised field which combines administrative, business and marketing functions. The sports manager is a combination of an agent and an advisor who handles the off-the-field aspects of the sport on behalf of the client so they can worry solely on their performance in the sport itself.

Though sport management is yet to enter the mainframe of career choices, Sean Sequeira finds that being a sport manager in India is not altogether a gloomy option courses in sports management. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) was set up in 1984 by the Indian government to promote and improve the quality of sport in the country. The SAI run two institutes offering courses in sport which can aid someone looking forward to a career in sports management. The two institutes are Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala and the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Thiruvananthapuram. The one year Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management (PGDSM) is the most recognised course in India. A few private

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS The most successful sports managers are usually those who have engaged in professional sporting activities previously. Retired sportspersons who become sports managers tend to understand the commitments of their clients and therefore have an edge to be successful. Executives who haven’t been directly involved in sports before can also succeed if they have passion for their job. The job may require further commitments apart from a regular 9-to-5 workday which the sports manager should be ready to undertake. Apart from this, a high level of energy and enthusiasm also goes a long way.
INTERNSHIPS It is advisable to do an internship before or while pursuing an educational programme. The realm of sports management strongly depends on the contacts you build. An internship can give you an early insight into the field thereby improving your chances of employment and giving you a head start in your career as a sports manager. Internships tend to be rigorous with little pay.
CHALLENGES The biggest challenge for a sports manager in India is attaining a sponsorship for their client. In a country that is obsessed with cricket, it becomes difficult for
sports managers in other sports to attain funding through corporate sponsorship for the sportspersons they are representing. Companies usually look to invest a minimum amount for maximum returns which becomes an added challenge. The career of the sports manager is closely associated with the performance of his client. If the client’s performance takes a nosedive, the sports manager will receive fewer returns and have added difficulties. Therefore a manager should be weary of the client’s day-to-day needs to make sure nothing hampers their performance.
CAREER SCOPE Sports management hasn’t developed in India yet. It is still in its nascent stages. The only job Indians perceive in sports is professional cricketer which leaves limited opportunities for other professions and other sports. Designer Dream Jewellery design has transitioned from being a luxury career to a mainstream one. Sangeetha Thiyagarajan profiles this lucrative profession
Jewellery designers are architects of jewellery. They ideate, design, prototype and then create jewellery. A designer might produce mass designs for a commercial manufacturer or custom jewellery for a select clientele. They might be specialists focusing on one type of ornament or generalists who create entire themed collections. Most designers also have complementary degrees in gemmology, jewellery manufacturing, business management and retail, which give them more command over the creation process and the flexibility to apply their skills to different facets of the business.
The Indian connection
India’s gems and jewellery industry is likely to double in the next five years, according to a study titled All that glitters is gold: India Jewellery Review 2013 by global consultancy firm A.T. Kearney. Additionally, more and more international brands are setting up shop in the country. It is evident that there is an increasing need for a workforce skilled in fashioning jewellery.

“We will teach you the skills. All you need is passion and energy,” says Radhika Sapkal, Assistant Manager at GIA. Vast arrays of courses
are available for design enthusiasts. If you are a beginner, you can start with fundamental courses on design and composition. If you want something niche, explore courses that deal with Indian and western design styles or the ones about manufacturing, marketing and retailing jewellery. Choose a reputed course. Bachelor? Foreign universities offer a number of qualifications apart from the regular bachelor degrees. Karan Teckchandani introduces you to some of them

owadays a number of recognised institutions and universities award a variety of qualifications for those who may not have either the time or money required for a bachelor's degree, or perhaps would want to pursue a short course to help with their career. Most of these qualifications serve as introductory courses to a field of study. Some others do away with the unnecessary credit requirements and only focus on the core subjects.

Associate Degree
This is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges and degree granting institutions in the US. It is the lowest in the hierarchy of post-secondary academic degrees offered. In spite of persistent high unemployment, there is demand in the US for people with ‘middleskills’ that often require no more than an associate degree, such as lab technicians, teachers in early-childhood programmes, computer technicians, draftsmen, radiation therapists, paralegals and machinists. An associate degree is awarded to students who complete 90 quarter credit hours or 60 semester credit hours of schooling.
Higher National Diploma (HND)
The Higher National Diploma or HND is a qualification granted in the UK after two years of study. Most coursework units of the HND are awarded with a Pass or Fail, in addition to one graded unit each year which is awarded with an A, B or C. It is popular in business and computer science courses. Those pursuing engineering HNDs usually go on to study a third year to obtain their bachelor degree. This process is called a top-up. HND holders are permitted to use the postnominals HND or HNDip after their name, usually followed by the course name in brackets.
Diplôme D’études Universitaires Générales (DEUG)
The DEUG is a diploma in France that is conferred through a bachelor’s degree – it is awarded after the completion of the first four semesters of a six semester degree. It is up to individual universities to determine which areas of study and which courses award the DEUG to its students.
Foundation Degree
Foundation Degrees are awarded in the UK. As the name suggests, the degree lays the foundation; it gives basic knowledge in a subject for the student who will pursue employment or further studies in that field. It is usually offered by universities working in tandem with further education colleges – specialist and adult education institutes – and lasts for two years with full-time study. Foundation Degrees aim to give students industry experience, the ability to place practical knowledge in an academic perspective, and a study structure that is accessible by working professionals. Foundation Degree holders may ‘top-up’ too by continuing their study for one more year after which they receive a bachelor’s degree.
NON-BACHELOR SUBJECTS • The list of subjects ranges from philosophy to gastronomy to auditing. • Most relate to the arts and commerce fields. • Many associations, formed since the early part of this decade, grant charters – professional designations – to candidates who clear their exams. An example is the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association that confers the CAIA charter on candidates who clear both their exams.
Higher Diploma (HD)
A Higher Diploma is an academic degree that is awarded in Hong Kong, UK, Ireland, Iraq and Oman at different levels. Iraq awards it after the completion of a year of master’s degree study. In Hong Kong it is considered equal to an Associate Degree – it is higher than a certificate and diploma, but lower than a bachelor’s degree. The emphasis is on specialisation and job training. In the UK, it is considered equivalent to the student passing class 12.
The pros
They cut out unnecessary courses. They take a shorter time to complete. They are more geared towards the specific job skill set you need for your career. They are low cost options.
The cons
Not all recruiters favour such degrees. There are limited courses such degrees can be pursued in. Should one choose to do a higher degree (master or PhD) afterwards, these qualifications would not be sufficient. A bachelor’s degree is the only recognised qualification. There is a lack of campus life, since many students use the light workload and the excess time it comes with to be more productive by participating in activities or working jobs.
Recognition in India
At the moment, the scope of employment in India for people attaining such degrees is very low since the current job market has become difficult enough for those with advanced qualifications such as master’s degrees. Companies in India are able to get well-qualified talent at a low cost; hence there is little or no incentive to hire people who have non-bachelor degrees, even if they were pursued from educational hubs like the US, UK or Australia. Yet, many sectors do not place emphasis on academic qualifications but rather on skill and knowledge. Creative sectors such as film making do not require an academic qualification. 28-year-old Sneha Thakker, founder of Thakker Technologies, talks to Aparna Sundaresan about the challenges of being a young, female and first generation IT entrepreneur

neha Thakker started her business in 2009 at the age of 23 without a business background and no external funding. Five years on, her company Thakker Technologies sees an annual turnover of `5 million. In 2012, she received the Priyadarshini Award from the Federation of Indian Women Entrepreneurs.
What prompted you to quit your job and start your own company?
It was to challenge myself because during my job I never got a chance to prove myself. Rather than helping me grow, my seniors were diluting my work and holding me back from realising my potential. More importantly, there were certain services in the marketplace that I knew I could successfully fulfil if given a chance. So after doing a job for couple of years, I told myself, it’s enough. One fine night I talked with my father; fortunately he agreed.
With what vision did you start Thakker Technologies?
Honestly, I just started my venture in the ambition to learn something new and deliver something new and open source to the market. But now as we have grown to international levels my vision is to get my company listed in the top IT companies of the world.
What difficulties did you face in starting your own enterprise?
The very first problem any entrepreneur may face is money. I have started my business with my pocket money and zero capital.

As I did not have a business family background, [the big problems] were attracting and retaining customers, keeping an eye on cash flow, creating a good team of people, finding the right business location, dealing with competition, etc.

Where did you draw inspiration from to keep going?
It’s your own battle with a one man – oops – one woman army! If you are from a business family, you would get exposure and experience while growing up which can’t be taught in B-schools. Being a first generation entrepreneur is a double-edged sword and it can be challenging yet rewarding. You have to create contacts, raise capital, balance finance to survive, etc. Sometimes you lose a deal not because you are not capable enough, but because [someone else] has good references.
My parents. I grew up seeing them doing hard work. Parents and family members always inspire me to focus on my goals. They inspired me to take a risk. Also my venture greatly stimulates economic development in the community and creates new jobs for many people, which motivates me.
What is it like being a female entrepreneur in the maledominated tech industry?
You walk into a crowded seminar and can count the number of women there on one hand. In business, you deal with different kinds of men and women – some are more honest than others, some are hard-nosed and aggressive, whilst others are easygoing. You have to put on a front to protect yourself and compensate by adopting the typical male attitude in the business world – that of being aggressive, competitive and even harsh. With female owners, men think they can be dishonest or give her a bad deal because she’s a woman – something they probably wouldn’t try with another man. So you always have to be alert and not emotional while dealing for a business.
How welcoming is the industry of young, twenty-something entrepreneurs? When you are in your twenties, you look more like a collegian than an entrepreneur. You have to impress leaders with your skills and ability. You have to create contacts. If you are a budding entrepreneur, you do not have space to stand with the industry leaders. You have to prove yourself at every stage to create your own space in their circle. [Initially] they were

What is your typical day at work like?
I don’t really think there’s a ‘typical’ day. You’re always putting out fires. Hopefully you’re having fun, but you’re also under stress. You’re doing a hundred different things. You’re wearing all these different hats. It’s exciting. It’s nerve-wracking. You never know what the next day is going to bring. You’re basically just running from one thing to the next. I know I was working 18 hours a day and Monday through Sunday. I loved every minute of it.
Has success changed the way you work? When you get rewarded and recognition for the work you do, it always boosts your work style and keeps you going to achieve more.

Having conducted expansive research by contacting 1,300 institutes and over 8,000 recruiters around the world, Youth Inc has ranked the top 100 universities in the world to pursue an undergraduate programme

elcome to the Youth Incorporated, Education Times and Rediff.com Global University Rankings 2014. Continuing with our annual rankings for the best global universities, we have conducted extensive research work spanning several months to sort through voluminous raw data and bring out a finished analysis that is practical and can be instrumental in the selection process for those looking to enrol in the best programmes around the world. We contacted 1,300 institutes to gauge their responses to unbiased questions that would help us evaluate the quality of the educational experience they provide. We also accumulated responses from the current students of the universities. In addition, we procured information from over 8,000
recruiters that have previously recruited graduates from the institutes considered in the surveys. Once the data was accumulated, we broke down the information by placing emphasis on the most important criteria a student considers when enrolling in an institute. Factors such as value for money, student and recruiter satisfaction, infrastructure and facilities, teaching methodologies and much more were considered to rank the institutes. This painstaking method was used to bring out the ranking of the top 100 universities worldwide. We were also able to provide rankings based on regional distribution and streams of study. HOW HAVE THE INSTITUTES FARED COMPARED TO 2012 AND 2013?
Placing the 2014 top 100 ranking against those we conducted in 2012 and 2013, a comparison of the performance of the institutes over the years is clearly visible. Harvard University has retained its pole position at the top of the rankings with a perfect score that it managed to attain in the previous years as well. Stanford University and University of Pennsylvania rank second and third respectively with nearperfect scores as well. The top 10 of last year have managed to stay in the top of the table with a few universities improving on their previous rank and a few dropping by a rank or two. The top 10 continues to be dominated by American institutes with the only exception being University of Oxford which has moved up to rank 4. When set against the surveys of the previous years, most universities in the top 100 seem to have a consistent performance with a similar ranking over the years. MARCH 2014 Youth Incorporated 33

THE INDIA STORY The four Indian institutes that appear in the ranking this year are the same institutes that figured last year as well. The only difference is how much they’ve slipped in their scores and ranks. This disconcerting outcome notwithstanding, we again question why no institutes other than the IITs (save for University of Delhi) are comparable to international universities. We were hopeful last year about educational reforms in the country, but it seems in one year the reforms have had no effect on India’s higher education institutes. As recently as three years ago, the government’s favourite phrase was ‘knowledge economy’ – build an economy on the foundations of world class education. This plan seems to have gone pear-shaped. According to UNESCO’s 11th Education For All Global Monitoring Report, which was released in the last week of January and reported by Hindustan Times, 90% of children from poor families remain illiterate despite completing four years of school education. level, if the National Skill Report 2014 (prepared by the CII, PeopleStrong and Wheebox) is anything to go by, about 70% of the graduates produced by Indian institutes are unemployable. Contrary to what the government’s spin doctors would like us to believe, the standard of higher education in India is sliding. Perhaps to salvage what is left of it, the FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry), has developed a roadmap for improving the state of education in the country. Vision 2030, as written about by T.V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman of the FICCI Higher Education Committee, envisions that by the year 2030 “50% of our youth would be in the higher education system, at least 23 Indian universities would be among the global top 200 and 6 Indian intellectuals would have been awarded the Nobel Prize. Our country would be among top 5 countries globally in cited research output, its research capabilities boosted by annual R&D spends totalling over $140 billion.” This is a lofty aim indeed, but it cannot be achieved without the government’s participation. e chose institutes across the world after having discussions with thousands of students, recruiters and faculty. Youth Inc’s Research Unit (YRU) also studied domestic rankings in various countries to find the best institutes. We sent survey links to 1,300 institutes and provided them with unique codes so that they could submit their responses online. Institutes were also provided links to online surveys where their current students were asked to rate specific statements that pertained to the factors considered in this ranking. Institutes also sent separate survey links to their recruiters who in turn rated the institute’s career management cell as well as student employability. Over 8,000 additional recruiters were sent emails with a survey link. The recruiter list was prepared from the responses of the institutes and also included internationally well-known recruiters. Below are the factors we considered and the overall weightage assigned to them: Careers, recruitment and industry viability of students – 55% Diversity and international outlook – 10% Innovation – 10% Campus, extracurricular activities, exchange programmes – 15% Money, student satisfaction – 10%
CAREERS, RECRUITMENT AND INDUSTRY VIABILITY OF STUDENTS – 55%
This category significantly impacts the overall score of an institute since it is the most weighted factor. One of the most important criteria to select institutes is the student’s industry viability after graduation. Recruiters were asked to list and rate the institutes that they were most likely to recruit from. They were asked the likelihood of recruiting again from the same institute and their satisfaction with the institute’s career cell. Recruiters rated students on various factors including analytical and problem solving skills, leadership potential, communication and interpersonal skills and so on. Institutes and students were also asked about the availability and functioning of a career service cell on campus and how active such a service was. We also considered what percentage of students were actually placed, both domestically and internationally, through the institute’s career service cell. Students reported the availability and ease of obtaining internships.
DIVERSITY AND INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK – 10%

Institutes were asked to report the total number of students on campus and what percentage of the students were international and speak two or more languages. Gender diversity of the students was considered. Institutes also reported the percentage of the faculty that were international, hold a doctorate degree and accredited with their own publishing material along with the gender diversity of the faculty. Students were asked to rate the student and faculty diversity in their class.

We asked the institutes to select the different types of assistance provided by the student office or a similar body on campus. Our initial list was selected after surveying students across different campuses worldwide. Students reported if they were encouraged by the institute to participate in different extracurricular activities on campus. Institutes were asked to report the percentage of students that opted for exchange programs. We also considered the exchange students present on the institute’s campus.
INNOVATION – 10%
MONEY, STUDENT SATISFACTION – 10%
This category looks at the innovation used to construct and teach programmes and how faculty engage the students; an important factor in the overall perception of an institute. We considered the different ways in which an institute constructs programmes. Institutes were asked to select from a list different teaching methodologies that we considered innovative – some of these included company visits, dual or multiple majors and course collaborations between different departments at the institute. Our list was made after surveying students across different campuses worldwide. Students were asked to report how satisfied they are with faculty who use innovative ways to teach subjects.

This category considers the support students receive on campus and the availability of extracurricular activities. The exchange programmes offered by the institute and

This category takes into account a critical part of college education today – finances. And more importantly, how satisfied a student is with the institute. We considered students’ opinions on whether a particular institute was perceived as ‘value for money’. We also asked institutes to state the percentage of students who received some sort of funding from the institutes. Students were asked to rate their institutes on various factors including attitude of staff and professors, location, course content and so on and institutes were asked to report the graduation rate of students enrolled and what percentage of students transfer out of the institution. We calculated the standard deviation and standard scores (Z scores) so that we could combine and analyse the data with more accuracy and reliability. Below is a summary of the factors and the weightage given to each factor when we ranked the institutes. Each factor was made up of a set of

questions. The total percentage attributed to that factor was based on the average score of the responses multiplied by the assigned weightage. The total scores were then sorted from highest to lowest. The institute with the highest score was ranked first.
By following such a practice we did not excessively penalise an institution with a ‘zero’ for data that it could not provide. At the same time, the institute was not rewarded.
NOT JUST NUMBERS
We required that at least 20% of the class size (of any specific institute) answer the student survey. Hence, some institutes were disqualified from our ranking because of lack of responses to the student survey.
After we calculated the total computed scores for the institutes, we subjectively analysed the data provided by the institutes, current students, and recruiters. If we found discrepancies in the satisfaction scores and the subjective descriptions, we omitted the data. This happened in the case of three institutes.
MISSING DATA
In a few rare occasions, some institutes did not supply data for all the questions in the survey. When data was missing which affected low-weighted factors such as value for money or campus support, we entered an estimate between the average and the lowest value reported by the institute.
EXCLUSION OF INSTITUTES
INSTITUTES THAT DID NOT FILL OUT THE SURVEY REPORTS IN TIME
Out of 1,300 institutes that were contacted, 19% of the institutes did not complete the survey on time or did not respond. We used publicly available information on some of these institutes to include them in our ranking. Qualifying as an architect in the United Kingdom is typically a combination of academic studies at a university and practical experience. Amazingly, this girl was still determined to go rappelling. There she was, all set, standing right at the edge of a 180-feet high waterfall. She knew one wrong step would send her down, but she was prepared. With no fear, she was down in minutes. The incident reminds of something I once read – the strength of a woman is not measured by the impact of hardships in life, but by the extent of her refusal to allow those hardships to dictate her and who she becomes.”

“This image was taken on a visit to the Ambawadi school in Dahisar, Mumbai. While walking the streets, I was immediately struck by the radiance of this woman’s smile. In a situation that would appear to some as desperate, here was a woman that had an aura of happiness and satisfaction surrounding her. Sitting outside her house in Ambawadi with her five year old daughter running around her feet, she told me of her joys in life, raising a family, making a home and her aspirations for her little girl. Having a disability didn’t stop her from having the same hopes and dreams as anyone else and working hard to achieve them. Take charge of your picture by cropping out any extra elements, keeping the horizon levelled (no crooked photos!), thinking about where you want your subject to be – in the background or foreground. Be sure to keep anything that would distract the image out of the picture. To make things interesting move your subject away from the middle of your picture. Try playing around with depth-of-field. A smaller depth of field focuses the attention on your subject. A larger depth of field will make everything in the picture clear and sharp. You will also want to become familiar with the way your camera focuses (most auto-focus cameras focus on whatever is in the center of the picture). Pilates is an exercising regimen that focuses on building one’s muscles, flexibility and endurance in order to improve balance, muscle strength and posture without an increase in bulk. It was created and developed by a man called Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century in the US. Pilates was originally practised to recover from injuries and was employed by professional dancers. Thus, today Pilates shows influence of physiotherapy.
THE PRACTICE
Pilates is performed on a mat and with a specialised apparatus. Mat exercises are done often with no accessories, although sometimes gym balls and stretch bands may be used. There are a few Pilates apparatuses that are designed to provide resistance to the body. Working against resistance is the very core of any exercise, and the apparatuses help achieve that by requiring the practitioner to lift against gravity and overcome the resistance of springs.

Trending big time on social networking sites, thigh gaps have become one of the latest trends teenagers are considering necessary in order to look desirable. So, how do you know if you have what silly teenage girls all over the globe are vying for? Simple. Stand straight with your back upright and feet together. If you see space between your thighs, congratulations! You’ve got yourself a thigh gap. Though the thigh gap is not very popular in India, it has spread like wildfire in the west. The movement began in early 2013 and gained momentum through sites like Tumbler on which it began trending under the #ITG or #innerthighgap tags. Cara Delevinge, a 21-year-old supermodel, is believed to be the inspiration behind this crazy trend. There are also several Twitter accounts that are dedicated to Delevinge’s thigh gap which shockingly have thousands of followers, most of whom are vulnerable teenage girls.
Can everyone get a thigh gap?
The answer is no! A person’s genes determine hip and bone structure, thus making it is impossible to make the pelvic girdle wider or narrower even through intense workouts. Women with wide hips have a chance of having that gap between their thighs, but that too is just a chance. You cannot workout and undertake crazy diets and expect them to do what your genes could not either.
A bikini bridge is the hollow space that is created between a person’s bikini bottom and hip bones when lying down. Started off as an internet hoax, the bikini bridge has somehow found its way into the wish lists of thousands of young girls across the globe. A mere prank pulled off by a 4chan user – an imagebased site where users post and comment on a number of topics – was enough to create an online stir which has now come to witness mass participation in this unhealthy fixation. Once the trend caught pace, what ensued were an increased number of fake tumbler accounts, photoshopped bikini bridge pictures shared on Instagram and fiery tweets both for and against this new body fad. THE GAP TRAP
BRIDGES WE’D RATHER NOT BUILD
How is one supposed to achieve a Bikini Bridge? The Bikini Bridge has so far affected thousands of girls who are either posting pictures of their bikini bridges online or are busy starving themselves to achieve one. Crazy diets, strenuous workouts, starvation and unrealistic and unhealthy fitness goals are all being used to build bikini bridges. Young girls are also readily succumbing to substance abuse to lose what they deem as being unnecessary weight.

It has only become more infamous today with several teenage girls aping models and harming their bodies.

It is a known fact that women are extremely conscious about their bodies. Although smart and strong, when it comes to their appearance and body, women often find themselves in vulnerable spots. Unhealthy fads such as the thigh gap, bikini bridge, visible collar bone and ribs make women feel like their missing something, or that they will never really have ‘perfect’ bodies until they have a thigh gap or a bikini bridge to flaunt. The want for these trends ultimately leads to diets that do not meet the body’s required calorie count, and rigorous workouts that suck out all remaining energy left in a person. Obviously, the combination of a bad diet and excess workout lead to detrimental results and a series of health issues. Young girls should respect their bodies and stop subjecting themselves to physical and mental agony. Let’s start healthier trends. Let’s make social media friendly. What is slacklining?
Slacklining is a sport which involves walking, jumping, balancing and performing tricks on a slackline. A slackline is a flat webbing made of nylon or polyester which can be best described as a 2-inch trampoline. Although commonly confused with tightrope walking, slacklining is entirely different since the line is not actually taut but slack with tension which allows for bouncy movement. A person who practices slacklining is called a slacker.
How did it start?
Slacklining originated when American rock climbers Adam Grosowsky and Jeff Ellington started walking on loose chains and cables between two anchor points in 1979. They later used flat webbing and started performing tricks while on the line. The sport began to grow when Scott Balcom and Chris Carpenter used nylon webbing to cross under the arches of a freeway bridge in California in 1983 at a height of 120 feet above ground thus giving rise to what is now commonly known as highlining. The most pivotal activity which brought slacklining to fame occurred on 13 July 1985 when Balcom crossed the Lost Arrow Spire highline in Yosemite National Park at a height of 2,890 feet.
How to slackline?
The best gear for a beginner is a 2-inch wide flat webbing slackline and a ratchet. The best anchor points for a slackline are trees with a minimum diameter of 12 inches and are at a distance of 15-20 feet from each other. For a beginner, it is most advisable to set up the slackline 3 feet above the ground with as much tension. Once the slackline is set up, balancing on a single spot is the first step followed by learning to walk, walking backwards and turning on the line. Other tricks can be practised once you are more familiar.Slacklining without a safety harness is called free soloing which should be attempted only once you are well trained. 66 Youth Incorporated MARCH 2014

Slacklining is known to have many benefits. Improvement of balance is the first benefit of slacklining. Many athletes use slacklining as a means to train and improve for other sports. Slacklining also improves concentration and focus. It helps relieve stress and calm the mind. It is also an effective full body workout by building muscle and joint strength while improving posture. Slacklining is also a great leisure activity.
Styles
Slacklining can be broadly divided into: TRICKLINING: This is the most popular form of slacklining. The slackline is usually set up 3-5 feet above the ground and is bouncy so tricks can be performed.
LONGLINING: One of the tougher styles of slacklining, longlining involves walking a slackline which is more than 30 metres in length. It requires more concentration and better quality gear. TUNELINING: Simply put, tunelining involves playing a musical instrument while slacklining. SLACKLINE YOGA: It combines slacklining with traditional yoga poses so as to increase the challenges and improve the experience of yoga. WATERLINING: Any form of slackline activity conducted by setting up the slackline over water is known as waterlining. HIGHLINING: Slacklining at a height of over 30 feet above ground is called highlining. It is one of the toughest forms of the sport as the height adds risks. RODEO SLACKLINING: A rodeo slackline is extremely slack and has no tension. It can be setup between anchor points at 20 feet above ground but droop down to 3 feet above ground in the middle. It is extremely difficult to master. TIMELINING: Balancing on a slackline for a certain length of time without falling or stepping off is called timelining. It requires immense concentration and endurance. URBANLINING: Slacklining in urban areas is known as urbanlining. It can be a form of or an amalgamation of other styles of slacklining.

The World Slackline Federation (WSFed) is an officiating organisation for slacklining around the world. They are responsible for governing the quality of slacklining through requirements for teachers and world rankings of professionals. They also define scoring and refereeing criteria for competitions and uphold the quality of slacklining competitions around the world. Official slacklining competitions are ranked as: WORLD SLACKLINE CHAMPIONSHIP The biggest international slacklining tournament held once a year where only the top eight ranked slackers in the world are invited to compete. NATIONAL SLACKLINE CHAMPIONSHIP The biggest slacklining tournament to decide the best in a country for the respective year. SLACKLINE WORLDCUP Up to five WorldCup competitions are held in a year giving competing athletes an opportunity to gather world ranking points. SLACKLINE OPEN International competitions which also allot world ranking points but of lower prestige than a WorldCup. Up to 20 opens may be held in a year. SLACKLINE JAM Unlimited number of jams may be held in a year but they have the least amount of points allotted to competitors.
The slacklining community is quite small in India. A Facebook group called Slack.in is the best place to converse with fellow slackers. Founder Kunal Bedarkar says, “Slack.in was inspired by Slack.fr, the national slacklining community in France. I was hoping to bring the Indian community together to schedule activities and help each other out.” Slacklining is mostly practiced in Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Slackers are known to be environment-friendly. Trees are a natural anchor to set up slacklines which is why tree protection is a major concern in the slacklining community. Always use tree protection gear when setting up a slackline. This may be rudimentary like cushions and foams or professional gear from stores.

THE EQUALITY OF PAIN
When in life we’re feeling down in the dumps, we so easily assume that everyone else has it so good. We just cannot accept that even those with all the ostensible trappings have trying times too. The thing is, life is a package deal and the human flesh comes with its share of suffering. This is a universal truth. There is no life sans pain, depression, trial and suffering. How many cars and homes one has is irrelevant to the amount of suffering or worry a human being is subject to. The truth of this came to me when I saw an interesting message in my Facebook inbox last week. A follower on my page said, “Ma’am, you have a perfect life. Everything is so glamorous and wonderful in your life.” Ironically, this message on Facebook had come to me when I was undergoing a real gruelling trial. Quite amusing this; the truth is quite the opposite – life has trials and tribulations for everyone.
DON’T LOSE SIGHT
That message on Facebook was indeed a sweeping assumption! A revelation. One that made me realise that everyone presumed conveniently that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Because you look glamorous and live in luxury, life has to be just perfect. And it brought home a very universal truth that life and the cycle of birth and death had to have its share of sunshine and darkness. How we deal with it is where the choice comes in. When you reach that roadblock of energy drain, body ache, over study, pressure, homework, hard work, depression, lack of motivation and the desire to hide from the world, to pick up and move on is definitely not easy. Suicide and ending it all is not the answer, trust me. In a milieu when drug overdose is on the rise, escape in terms of chemical drugs is not the answer. Seeking help, sisterhood, brotherhood, bonding, seeking counselling, working out,
friendship and seeking help and support from parents and ones support structures are the answers.
MENTAL STRENGTH
The trick is to never extinguish the inner spark to heal and move on. It is the inimitable survival instinct that all of us are born with, a magic that gives us resilience and sparks initiative. Most important is to give positive affirmations to your brain instead of telling yourself that you are down and the only one in the world with problems. Do not overwhelm yourself with the perils and problems of the world, or fret about all the negative aspects of your life. Deal with problems selectively and in priority. Most important, cross a bridge when you reach it; do not imagine problems and create mental mountains of molehills.
On a serious note, a chat with your friend or mentor is definitely healing. Comparisons always debilitate. At a low phase one tends to choose the escape of licking one’s wounds and the comfort of staying alone. I’d suggest the opposite route – however tough – keep up with low maintenance social activities even though you don’t feel up to it. Train the mind to clear itself of recurring disturbing thoughts and problems.
STAY SOCIAL
Retreating into a shell is dangerous and is the instinctive thing we want to do when under the fog of depression. Instead reduce isolation and gauge how bad you’re feeling. If it’s getting worse, meet a counsellor and share your experiences with that impartial outsider to gain guidance on how to cope and get perspective on the situation. At the very least call a close friend or family and pop over for a cup of tea and confidences. It isn’t always necessary to maintain a masque of happiness when you are feeling beaten and tired.

As hard as it is to believe, CID is one of our country’s most watched shows. While it has positioned itself as an ‘intelligent’ show, it is anything but that. Its popularity extends beyond its run time and through the slew of hilarious jokes about the inane moments of the show that do the rounds. We say stop. Stop now! Running since 1998 The mother of all soap operas, The Young and the Restless was created out of the need to have a day-time show dedicated to the youth. With a whopping 10, 355 episodes, the series is showing absolutely no sign of ceasing. Although a recipient of a number of awards, we wonder if it is relevant today. Are the youth really interested in unending and irrational storylines? We think otherwise. Running since 1973
Known for its brazen and brash contestants, Roadies was one of the most watched shows in its initial few seasons. As of 2014, we are bored of its mundane tasks and competitions, back-stabbing, politics, and of course, its annoying duo of judges – Raghu and Rajiv who try a little too hard to be nasty. Was there any particular purpose for using a repetition of phrases in your stories? Yes, most definitely. The reason you will find repetition not just in phrases but also in characters and certain situations is because I was trying to establish a connect between the two novellas in my book, Roselyn and Hariya, since their protagonists were at some point in time incarcerated in the same mental institution – Shanti Memorial. Did you have qualms about using strong themes and violent descriptions in your stories? Whatever tools I used in the construction of my stories were both integral and essential to their development and with regards to them, I am not in the least bit squirmish [sic]. Did you have to detach yourself from a normal style of thinking when writing the novel to get into the minds of your characters? When writing a book or story, if your understanding of your characters is strong, you don’t need to think unusually or differently. Shanti Memorial is a novel of two stories. The title of the first story is Roselyn which is the name of a mansion where most of the story takes place. The title of the second story is Hariya which is the name of the protagonist. The protagonist of the story Roselyn is a hitman of the Mumbai mafia who is contracted to assassinate a reputed psychiatrist in his family home. The assassin readily takes up the task assigned to him but is shell-shocked to find out that the hunter has become the hunted when he is locked up in the target’s house and must survive a cat-and-mouse game by killing the person chasing him. The second story Hariya begins with an unknown man mailing a diary to the editor of a newspaper. The diary belonged to a man named Hariya who recounts his story beginning with the deplorable conditions of his childhood right up to his prediction of how the diary would be found. The first story of the novel is an enthralling thriller while the second banks on gore to create horror through elaborate descriptions. The characters are shocking to the point of being unrealistic. The dialogues use poetic rhythms at times while the narration tends to take on an explicit tone occasionally.
