Editor's Note ust having ridden the Make in India Week euphoria I think we ought to share some of the highlights for all those who could not make it. The pavilions, conferences and forums were very curated and organized. All the sectors like Aerospace, Defense and Navy by the Indian Government were well represented. It was the perfect platform for handicrafts, FMCG companies, Auto companies and other top Indian brands. DC launched an exclusive Make in India sports car called Avanti. There were solar powered and intelligent garbage systems, an extension for the Swatch Bharat campaign which is a must on each street corner. The first Indian industrial robot BRABO was showcased by Tata. The underlying reason behind this major initiative was to focus on job creation and skill enhancement. The initiative also aims at high quality standards and minimizing the impact on the environment. I can say that never have I been more proud of my country and that we are not far from becoming a super power soon with this attitude and enthusiasm. We are back in March the time for publishing our undergraduate rankings so we bring you the Global University Ranking of 2016. Four years into the ranking survey what is noticeable is that most top schools retain their position and few schools have even managed to move ranks up with the positive changes they implement in their curriculum, managing student recruitment and diversity of programs available. So it is extremely vital for universities and schools to keep themselves updated and not just rely on their laurels. I hope this endeavor helps you make the right decision. Being exam time we thought some tips on preparing for your exams will help you get through the grind. So wishing you all the best in your exams.

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY SHARES RENEWABLE ENERGY EXPERTISE WITH INDIA
n Loughborough University engineering experts are helping to improve lives in India by sharing essential knowledge of how to turn waste into clean energy. n To help empower disadvantaged women connected with the Russ Foundation in South India, Dr Blanchard built a simple prototype wooden press in order to make biomass briquettes. Matthew then enlisted the help of students Sahil Jhamb and Dominic Cowell, from the School of Business and Economics, to devise a briquette formula made from paper, sawdust and ash - materials which are easily accessible in India and often go to waste. n This has all been made possible thanks to MyIndia - a social enterprise project which aims to tackle fuel poverty in the country. It is led by students who make up Enactus Loughborough – an entrepreneurial action group established to make a positive change in the world. n “This project demonstrates the power of collaboration and I hope it inspires other student engineers to take up opportunities outside their degree and get involved with projects such as MyIndia. This is also a great example of students and lecturers working together to share simple engineering knowledge overseas. n To find out more about Enactus Loughborough, visit www.enactuslboro.co.uk.

FOCUS FEATURE
To work
OR
not to work?
While studying in itself can be like a full-time job, students all over are now opting to work along with their regular studies. Rucha Solgama finds out whether they should or shouldn’t be doing the same
S
tudent jobs help to aid students who are in financial need. It is divided into two spectrums – Federal work-study and Non work-study program. These jobs can be acquired part-time, full-time, through internships, on campus, off campus or from Federal Work-study; it consists of government agencies, non-profit organizations, and also in community services, which are all on contract basis with the universities. Whereas in Non Work-study, it involves individual departments from private and public sector companies. The students can explore and take their pick accordingly, once their application is approved by the Financial Aid office. Once selected, they are granted with a specific allotment of money as per their qualification and requirement. In here, they are paid on an hourly
16 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
basis, either federally (Federal Work-study FWS) or by an individual department (Non Work-study NWS) as per the student enlisted. Students can use this liquidity in their education bills, transportation or to ease up their cost of living.
PROS SUPPLEMENTS FINANCE – A student can either enroll
for Federal Work-Study (FWS) or Non Work-Study (NWS). Once approved, they are eligible to earn an extra amount of income to pay for their books and stationeries and support their lifestyle. It helps them to be flexible and meet all of their requirements. VALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE FOR RESUME – We all know nowadays students who acquire more experience
in work, get the cookie. It elevates the students’ resumes and weighs more authenticity compared to students who just completed their studies without any work experience, even if they had scored better than their peers with work experience. STUDENT LOANS - It’s a nightmare for students to even think about loans in these apocalypse days, where the jobs are not guaranteed to even deserving and highly qualified students. Student jobs save the day for those in financial need. It gives them the freedom to earn money first without any stress about paying anything in the future. LET’S GET NETWORKING - As students, we all have those job positions we crave for. We enlarge our networking so as to reach our aims. As we often hear, ‘contacts get you a job faster than your resume’. Student jobs help students to observe how a professional work environment functions and lets them meet countless people in their interested fields. FREEDOM OF TASTING DIFFERENT CAREER CHOICES - Getting an insight into an industry, to try it out and learn how it works, before they become a life-long goal, gives students the clarity in what they can and want to do. Student jobs give them the opportunity of sampling different careers or professions they aspire to work in. LET’S GET REAL - Question to the beginners who started working: Now you know what you got yourself into? Yes, all jobs are difficult at some point. But, now you are in and you know how it feels. Student jobs give the students the trailer and instill what they are studying academically and what it propels to be, in practical and realistic terms. ENHANCES FUNDAMENTAL WORK SKILLS - Practice makes man perfect indeed. By studying theoretically and performing it practically, it impels the students to understand where they lack and what’s to refine in their skills, professionally. This practice compliments the student’s academic performances as well as drives them to improve themselves for the positions they seek in their fields. LEARNING VALUE - As student jobs save them from taking scary loans, these jobs give them the gist of making money and saving money for better. Two important money lessons; a student who works, learns and banks. It improves their school performance, as they understand what they’re working so hard for, and value where their time needs to be deposited such as homework and where money should be invested, like books, food and transportation.
CONS NOT FOR ALL STUDENTS - Basically, federal work-study
(FWS) is for students who are in real financial need. Even though many applicants must qualify the requirements, not many get that crown of ease. With funds limited,
the students who win the ‘most in need of financial assistance’ are first accountable. FEAR TALKS: ARE YOU APPROVED YET? - Don’t even get excited or energetic that you will work your elbows out. Unless and until once you are approved by the Financial aid office. All these hopes of earning, experiencing and elevating your resume will pop your bubble if you don’t make it to the list. WHAT’S ON THE JOB MENU? - Like when you go to a particular restaurant, and they hand you a list of their selected foods on their menu, this is an identical example with the student jobs, where the universities provide their selected list of companies. You go to a particular college, they provide you with a list of jobs. Nothing from outside. No other alternative. NOT HELPFUL WHEN IN TIME - So you want to work in summer and not during your academic year? Alas, you can’t have that flexibility. In varied colleges, there are some packages made like a list of companies, other certain rules and limits, by the student union of the university and not many offer you the luxury of choosing the time you can invest. CAN’T GET SALARY AS YOU’D LIKE - For the students, they work as any other in the job; for a number of hours with a certain amount of wages rate decided and later, get their income. But, if you believe that income should be raised according to how much work you put in. Well, you still can’t do anything about it as you were approved with a certain allotment of funding. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s fixed. PROFIT: EMPLOYER > STUDENT JOB EMPLOYEES - You are as qualified as any other graduate, you do the same level of work, but you receive less income. Who wins for now? The employer. The Work study program truly reimburses a large digit of your wage and gets the work done too. Henceforth, it makes it attractive for them to hire you. Sounds a bit unfair, right? HEALTH /ACADEMICS MIGHT COMPROMISE - At a certain point in time, all the students are not the same when dealing with attending full-time college hours and also having enough energy and concentration to work part-time. This can cause difficulty for the students physically, emotionally and mentally, leading to exhaustion and poor performances in academics. YOU GOT PERKS OR NOT? - Every college does not give perks. Perks of what, you’d ask? They are such as employee discount like 20% in BearWear and other store items that UCLA provides where they also give bigger discounts on Employee Appreciation Day several times a year, meal allowance etc. There are Bonus Programs like Exceptional Performance Awards and Spot Bonus Awards too. There is also an employee referral program, where student employees can receive extra cash for their extra hours of sweat. yi

Crime
CAREER
The Science Behind A Nilanjana Dutta talks about Dexter Morgan’s day job and also what helps him stay out jail despite his night errands while explaining what it takes to be a forensic expert
A
forensic report solely has the power to determine the murder weapon, impact of the attack, probable proportion of the attacker and sometimes even the exact human being who is the attacker from the DNA found on the body. But when the attacker is caught, it is always the detective who interrogated a witness or the cop who did all the footwork, who are given the credit. A lot of people believe that a career in forensics is not advisable because it is always the 12th player, but the only place that is true is CID and that too because the CID forensics guy keeps stating the obvious and they should really get a new one*. (*I meant scriptwriter.) Forensics come out to be the unsung heroes of a successful crime investigation because the crimes that get a lot of media coverage hold a lot more dynamics than a key forensic clue. But there are plenty of cases where the forensic report has defined the outcome of the case. Mr. M. S. Dahiya, Director, Institute of Forensic Science, GFSU, is known to have said how there is hardly anything that can’t be resolved through forensics, starting from a petty theft to paternity disputes in a social sense. SCOPE Your professional field is only as good as you are. If you are not good at what you do, even engineering will not promise you a stable career. Forensic Toxicology and Forensic Biology has always had a lot of scope and India is moving forward in this field quite prominently. The Gujarat Forensics Science University was set up exclusively to facilitate the same. Moreover, now with India keeping up with technological changes across the world, forensics is more exciting than ever. JOB OPPORTUNITIES Largely depending on one’s area of expertise, just like any other profession, one can work in government and private agencies, hospitals and independent labs.

But depending on the passion you hold for it, you can take up more challenging positions in areas such as anti-terrorist operations, mass disaster management, cybercrime investigation and protection against violation of human rights. Amazing Exam Preparation Tips With final exams just around the corner, we are all eager to study smarter rather than harder. With that in mind, Jeannie provides you with 10 amazing exam tips to help you get to the top 20 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
01
GET ORGANISED Getting organised is the best way students can save time while preparing for exams. There are three aspects to this: Notes Condense all the information you need to prepare for the exam in one place. Having all your notes in one place and in easy access can save your life. Dedicated Study Place It is always prudent to have a dedicated place to study which is equipped with everything you need to study. This conditions you to study whenever you sit there and primes your brain to concentrate on your work. Time Table Once you have all your study material organised, it is time to organise your time. Just like a dedicated place to study, having a set time everyday to study primes your brain and puts you in the mood to study.
02
PLAN AHEAD Every single student has had that one night of last minute preparation for an important exam and regretted it, only to repeat it. It is always better to plan ahead once you get your exam schedule and prepare a study schedule. This allows you to prioritise certain subjects and smartly organise your time. It might be unpleasant but it makes sense to dedicate more time to subjects you are struggling with. Also, tackling the least interesting subject first, when your concentration is high and then progressing to the most interesting will make things easier.
03 04 TIMING
Despite the fact that schools generally operate from 8 am to 2 pm, everyone has a different time of the day at which their concentration is at its highest point. It could be at 5 in the evening or 2 in the morning. Once you have identified whether you are an early bird or a night owl or anything in between, setting a dedicated study time becomes much easier and you are able to use every minute efficiently.
STUDY TECHNIQUE As with timing, every student has a specific study technique which suits them best. Broadly, there are two different categories of learners: Visual Learners Visual Learners, as the name suggests, study best using visual cues. For these types of readers, highlighting and mind maps are the best mediums to study. Auditory Learners Auditory Learners remember and understand what they hear best. For these learners, recording themselves and listening to the recordings is the best way to study.
05
POMODORO TECHNIQUE Spacing out study sessions into small chunks as opposed to cramming in long 10 hour sessions is always better. One technique developed by Francesco Cirillo is the Pomodoro Technique. This involves traditionally 25-minute study sessions separated by 5-minute breaks with every third break being 15-minutes long. This helps you grasp your content better without exhausting your brain. Of course, feel free to play around with the timings to find out what works best for you.
06 07 08 09
DEVELOP INTEREST There is nothing better at killing motivation than a lack of interest and no better motivator than a genuine love for the material. Connecting what you are studying with your life helps develop interest because finding its relevance will make the content fascinating and help you grasp the concepts even better.
FLASHCARDS
No matter your grasp of concepts and interest in the subject, some things have to be memorised and using flashcards is the best way to memorise small bits of information. Whether you prefer simple physical flashcards or virtual flashcards, which use spaced repetition software, they always help.
HACK AKRASIA 'Akrasia' is a term that dates back to Plato and means 'lack of command over one’s self'. It is Akrasia that draws you from your Math practice to YouTube videos. One of the best time management techniques is to hack your Akrasia and avoid procrastination. So put your phone away and turn that laptop off.
PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! One of the best ways to succeed in any exam is to get your hands on past papers and practice in examination settings. Set a timer so that you are under the same time restriction that you would be in during the exam. This will help you familiarise yourself with the examination format and also help you realise how long you take to write every individual answer so that you will not run out of time on D-Day. It also trains your brain to retrieve rather than just recognise information.
10
RELAXATION IS NOT A LUXURY One simple fact that students tend to forget is that relaxation is not a luxury. It is a necessity, especially when you are preparing for examinations or your brain will be in a daze. Studying can be mentally exhausting and if you don’t give your brain some rest, it will burn out. But relaxation should not become procrastination. Ensure that you hack your Akrasia and relax in moderation.

T
he inevitable leap from the classroom to a workroom is anything but an easy run. You may have landed your dream job but there are very few things that your degree can prepare you for once you’re seated at your workstation. Work etiquette may come naturally to some, although in majority of the cases you need to bear a few things in mind in order to be at your professional best. Loud colleagues These fun, bubbly people are alright to be around during breaks or afterhours, but if they are being constantly meddlesome, you need to press pause on them. It becomes difficult to work alongside a person who is loud and has no regard whatsoever about someone else’s work getting disrupted. Don’t lose your cool on them and don’t even ignore their behavior; doing either can result in the loss of a friendship or less peace of mind for you. Go up to them when they’re alone and politely request them to keep their voice down around you when you’re in the middle of something. If this doesn’t work after a while, go up to your senior and ask him to shift you to someplace more quiet. Take, but don’t give There are those who feel the immediate need to borrow a pencil, your post-it’s or even a book from your desk while you’re gone. You seat yourself at your desk only to realize your favourite stuff is missing. You shouldn’t turn them down forthrightly. Hand them over your supplies when they need it, but make sure you go over to their workstation a couple of hours later and ask them to return your things, saying you need to use them as well. If they make excuses while returning them, don’t lash out on them. You can keep your things locked in a drawer if you have one or get yourself a small box for your supplies which you can keep locked at the end of the day. Office politics Who doesn’t want to be a part of the cool group at work? The people who chill out, poke fun, even plan out the after work scenes. But what usually comes along with this group is incessant talking, more like gossiping, about co-workers. Although it won’t kill to indulge in some juicy stories, don’t let yourself get caught up in these frivolous talks. Always remember, a person who talks about someone else to you, will also talk about you to someone else. You can spend time with them, don’t dismiss their company altogether. Be careful about getting involved in unwanted drama thus leading to sourness in relationships. Talking about the boss One common mistake that people make is cribbing and complaining about their boss to their co-workers. It’s a given that you won’t completely love your boss at the initial stages and sometimes till much later on in your job. Those feelings should never be strong enough to compel you to talk behind his back. Although it’s a very common mishap that takes place and is considered normal in office’s today; it’s better to set yourself apart before getting into this negative groove. There will be days when your superior will be unnecessarily expectant
of you, what you should do is call up a friend out of office and vent out your frustration or just take a few deep breaths, try to keep yourself calm at that moment and remind yourself that, this too shall pass. Restrict your use of social media You may be tempted to check your phone and facebook every 10 minutes, like you did in your college days when you had a lot of time to spare. However, this habit needs to go as soon as possible because if you’re spotted whiling away your time on social media when you have work on your hands, you’ll end up in the boss’s cabin soon. You may not have a lot of work on a particular day but try keeping yourself busy by reading about things that matter, sites you won’t get pulled up for. You don’t want to seem like you’re not interested in your work from the start itself. Don’t divulge too much You may connect with someone real quick and feel like they’re your new best friend already; but try to get to know them better before baring your soul to them. It’s not that you can’t trust them, but it’s too soon to pour your heart out to someone you haven’t known more than two weeks. The same goes for a person of the opposite sex you might find attractive. Don’t jump into a relationship because you start to feel comfortable around a boy or girl. Talk to them and try to enjoy their company first before fantasizing about possibilities of the future. The reverse also applies in this case. If a colleague bares stories of her life to you and they seem a tad bit personal, make sure you don’t disclose it to people around. It’s very easy to be a blabbermouth, but no one enjoys the consequences. Your dress code Every company requires its employees to follow a fixed dress code. You’re lucky if you are allowed to go to work dressed casually. If not, then you should appear dressed formally, because the rules apply to everyone. You should bear in mind that low-cut, tight fitting and short clothing at work is a bad idea. It can let you down and award you with a negative reputation and poor judgment in the office. It doesn’t matter if your wardrobe is limited, make sure you always have a neat appearance. Treat your organization as your own You got through a series of interviews to get to this place today. Don’t make the mistake of taking it for granted. Treat your organization as your own and invest into it genuinely and not just because you’ve landed there. Take your work seriously and put maximum effort into it, not just at the start but all through. You may feel like you’re not getting the necessary credit or praise, but that isn’t what your work should be about. You should engage in your work because that’s what you love doing and it’ll show in time. You can’t begin to imagine the ways you’ll be appreciated in the long run. Don’t spend your work hours looking for something better out there, it’s common knowledge that the mind perceives the grass to always be greener on the other side. Start by watering the field on your end and before you know it, you’re a young professional. yi

ver felt that tug of a rope, tied to your conscience, holding you back? That nagging sense of self doubt, constantly plaguing your mind like a fly that just won’t leave your food? Yes, that’s what we’re getting at; the ceaseless waves of insecurities. The web that has been woven since our toddler years has only multiplied in magnitude and complexity as we step into life, entangling us at every step. If not nipped in the bud, it creates such havoc on our self-esteem that every time your toes touch the ground below, a notion of self-doubt reaches your feet and travels up your spine. This not only hinders every facet of your life, but it also acts as a limiting factor for any task you want to undertake. Insecurities are the bane of our existence. However, the question remains how can you extricate yourself from this demon’s clutches? The first step to overcome anything, is acknowledging its significance and in order to do that, it is imperative to understand what it fundamentally is. There is no need to boggle our mind with psychological and scientific jargon. Let’s talk in absolute layman’s language - insecurities are nothing but an emotional interpretation. It’s merely what you think of yourself in relation to society. Like offense and bitterness, it grows in a layered fashion. Insecurity robs by degrees; the degree to which it is entrenched equals the degree of power it has in the person's life. Regardless of whether we realize it, we all have very carefully painted an ideal picture perfect image of what we think we should be like and constantly strive to emulate this persona of perfection. While our appearance must be just like the look on the glossy page of Vogue, our minds cannot be anything short of brilliant. And let’s not leave out the toned legs of a swimmer and the confidence of a leader - a mere necessity, right? We put ourselves under a permanent strain, failing to comprehend that one day the elastic may just have been stretched beyond its limit. First and foremost, the image of perfection needs to be completely obliterated from your mind. Shattering that glass is not enough; break it into a million pieces, set all of them on fire, and dance on the charred remains. Relish every second of destroying your shackles. Once you have solidified who you shouldn’t be, start to appreciate who you actually are: a whole and unique entity. We are a generation that compares, evaluates and judges ourselves with great scrutiny, leaving absolutely no room for our own individuality, or as we prefer to term it as – ‘imperfections’. Embrace those flaws and kindle your flame of uniqueness. “Acceptance is one of the most challenging things for humans, but it ultimately leads to mental stability,” Dr Kunal Shoebh said. 1,10,000 tonnes of concrete was used for the foundation of the Burj Khalifa- the towering building that seems to ooze with grandeur and burst with strength, was only possible thanks to an extremely stalwart base. Unsurprisingly, we humans aren’t very different- we need to have roots of self confidence well grounded. If you can come to indisputable terms with yourself, be dead sure of who you are and what defines you, no external force will be able to touch even a strand of your hair. Another essential step is to get rid of everything that is standing in the way of loving
yourself- if it’s people, surroundings or even just clothesbe completely and absolutely unapologetic. Sadly enough, some of us don’t need others to sow the seeds of insecurity. We have a waging war going on within ourselves; our thoughts are our own bullets, we load the gun and our own fingers manage to pull the trigger. If the typical and as clichéd as it sounds ‘I’m not good enough’ is proving to be the impediment in your life, your fire and spirit is slowly going to slip from your fingers leaving you to eternal hopelessness. If you want to sidestep such a condition (let’s be real, who doesn’t?) you have to refer to these thoughts as external negativity that must be silenced. Stand up to them. Make them shut up. Figure out what makes you different, what makes you shine, and centre all of your frustrations onto this one spark. Work towards something with passion and before you know it, the confidence will set up its camp in your mind; there will be no room for insecurities that will consequently be pushed out. Insecurity stems from the very fact that we allow other’s opinions of ourselves to be a barometer that defines our character. The key of your happiness is conveniently taking shelter in someone else’s pocket. You could fall any second because your self-image can be squashed and squirmed by a mere comment or notion. The minute you learn how much significance to give to what other people say, you free yourself from the confines of judgment, self-doubt and unnecessary criticism. A competent and self-confident person is simply incapable of harbouring insecurities. Here’s a trick- ask yourself why something that somebody else says bothers you, then just laugh at the answer.
“Acceptance is one of the most challenging things for humans, but it ultimately leads to mental stability,” Dr Kunal Shoebh Why would you seek external validation if there were love pouring from within yourself? That gushing waterfall of confidence needs to be of such immense force, that nothing can deviate from its path. Don’t misunderstand my words and become a pompous, narcissistic brat who thinks he is the bee all and end all of life- be open to constructive criticism, never stop improving yourself but never stop to doubt yourself. If someone is more intellectual than you, It’s fundamental human nature to attempt to equal, if not outshine their capabilities- this is absolutely normal. You must start to read a little more but you must not dive into a pool of self-hate about how useless are (making you counterproductive). Insecurities end the moment you accept yourself and live your dreams, not because of what it will prove or get to you, but because that is all you want to do. yi

Rushabh Mody The reason people are insecure in relationships is because of the fear they have of them losing their partner or their partner finding somebody better. It's a brain game. Get your mind straight, trust your partner and know that they are not going to leave you. If they really wanted to, they would have left already. There is a reason why she is dating you and there is something about you that made her fall in love with you.
Samruddhi Bari Lower self esteem could be the most important and least discussed reason behind insecurities in a relationship. There's always fear of your partner finding someone better or smarter than you. In a world where almost everything is temporary, it's very difficult to find someone to hold on to, but it comes with a fear of losing them. One must keep assuring their partner to make it work.
Gargi Vengurlekar Insecurity is a negative feeling which tends to have a huge control over individuals. When it gets obnoxious it just ends up suffocating the entire bond, whether its the ex jazz or some present guy/girl being too close to your beloved. It could also be a professional insecurity mainly when the female is more successful than the male. Now it’s only sheer control and acceptance that can help curb insecurity. Since insecurities are derived from negativity and dicey trust in one another, it’s all about working on yourself.
STUDENT OPINION POLL 26 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
Satyanshu Mishra There can be many reasons that make people insecure such as distance, past or insecurities arising out of a friends circle. The biggest reason is ego. Ego is an important thing, and everyone should have it, but only to the required limit and not at the cost of others. It's not a task to get out of these insecurities, your partner sees how good you are. I think one must see how much their partner is trying for both of them to be together and be appreciative about it, put your ego aside and be with them.
Anushka Bhatnagar I believe the reason for major insecurity in a relationship is lack of communication accompanied by trust issues. If one has a sense of insecurity then it should be resolved there and then with their respective partners in order to move forward with a healthier relationship. These insecurities can be overcome by more interaction with the partner, where the both of them are open to deal with various scenarios. Insecurities in a relationship signify the lack of strength in a relationship, where the partner having them shall be helped. With things all clear there shouldn't be any news for anyone to feel insecure or jealous as the sense of their belonging being taken away doesn't exist.

Continuing with our annual rankings for the best global universities, we have conducted extensive research work spanning several months to sort through voluminous raw data and bring out a finished analysis that is practical and can be instrumental in the selection process for students looking to enroll in the best programmes the world over. We got in touch with 1900 institutes to gauge their responses to unbiased questions that would help us evaluate the quality of the educational experience provided by them.

We also considered the responses from the current students attending the universities as well as official responses from their respective administrative bodies. In addition to this, we procured information from 9000 recruiters that have previously recruited graduates from the institutes considered in the surveys. Once the data was gathered, we broke down the information by placing emphasis on the most important criteria a student considers when enrolling in an institute. Factors such as value for money, student and recruiter satisfaction, infrastructure and facilities, teaching methodologies and much more were considered while ranking the institutes. This meticulous method was employed by us to bring out the rankings of the top 100 universities worldwide. We were also able to provide rankings based on regional distribution and streams of study. To give the readers a holistic view of how a particular institute has fared over the years, the ranking for this year was placed against our previously conducted annual rankings. We hope our in depth survey will guide students in making the right choice yet again! yi

lacing the 2016 top rankings against those we conducted in 2014 and 2015, a comparison of the performance of the institutes over the years in clearly visible. Harvard University has retained its pole position at the top of the rankings with a perfect score that it managed to attain in the previous years as well. Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology rank second and third respectively with near perfect scores. The top 10 of 2015 have managed to stay at the top of the table with a few universities improving on their previous rank and a few dropping by a rank or two. The top 10 continues to be dominated by American institutes with the exception of University of Oxford and IE University which has moved up to rank 10 this year. Among the Asian universities, University of Tokyo retains its position at rank 15 from 2015 and 2014. It’s followed by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay which has retained its position at 20 and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi which has moved up to rank 24 followed by the National University of Singapore which is at 25 since last year. As is evident, most universities in the top 100 seem to show a consistent performance over the years with similar rankings.

T
he 2016 Global University Rankings haven’t had too much of an effect on Indian Universities per se. The four colleges that have always appeared in our rankings are still the same, and we haven’t seen any new college rising up to the top 100 as we would have hoped. IIT-Bombay managed to crack into the top 20 of the world in 2015, and has managed to maintain its position at the same rank. IIT-Delhi fared very well, jumping up three spaces from its earlier 27th rank, and is now ranked at 24 in the global rankings. IIT-Kanpur also showed a positive climb, jumping up 4 spaces from its 2015’s 80th rank to the 76th in 2016. Considering IIT-Delhi and IIT-Kanpur had both been showing considerable consistency over the past few years, we were optimistic of this climb. We hope to see IIT-Delhi in the top 20 next year, or at least closer to the mark.

34 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
India has always been a youthcentric country. The latest 2011 census data that was released this January showed that around 41 percent of India’s population is below the age of 20 years, with more than 50% below the age of 25. A recent UN report also reported India to have the largest youth population in the world, and this is despite having a smaller overall population than China. There is a high demand for quality education in the country, sure, but are we supplying this demand? There is a lot of talk about how Indian students prefer to study abroad and then eventually end up settling there, thus not spending their valuable resources on developing India. But can we blame them? With just four Indian universities in the top 100 global rankings, students preferring to study abroad to better their chances of getting a more advanced education should not come as a surprise. Universities abroad also show an advanced level of infrastructure and placement opportunities, which is a key factor that students consider while deciding upon where to pursue their future studies. For a country that bases its youngsters’ success on their education, at least from a societal perspective, India certainly needs to focus more on developing its educational institutes further.

RANKING ANALYSIS THE TEACHING FACULTY AT MY INSTITUTION ARE VERY RECEPTIVE TO DISCUSSIONS, QUESTIONS AND NEW IDEAS 80 per cent of students polled from our top 100 universities agreed that their teaching faculty was open to discussions, questions and new ideas. This is one of the best indicators of a good educational institute, so it is clear that the best institutes encourage interaction between the students and faculty.
THE PROGRAMMES TAUGHT IN MY INSTITUTE ARE INNOVATIVE AND INCLUDE COMPANY VISITS. 75 per cent of students at the top 100 institutes agreed that the programmes that they were taught were innovative. Education is constantly evolving, and the best institutes update their curricula regularly to keep in touch with the times.
THERE IS SUFFICIENT GENDER DIVERSITY IN MY CLASS 45 per cent of students polled felt that the gender diversity in their classes was insufficient. These top institutes need to do more to encourage women to take up science and business related fields to encourage gender equality in society.
THERE IS SUFFICIENT INTERNATIONAL DIVERSITY IN MY CLASS. 70 per cent of students polled felt that the international diversity in their classes was sufficient. International diversity is a strong factor that attracts students from all over the world to study at these top institutes. In recent years, the numbers of scholarships offered to international students have been reduced and this trend needs to be checked to maintain a diverse classroom.
I FEEL THAT MY INSTITUTION PROVIDES VALUE FOR THE MONEY I PAID.
MY CLASSMATES ENHANCE MY LEARNING EXPERIENCE BY CONTRIBUTING TO CLASS DISCUSSIONS. 80 per cent of students polled felt that their learning experience was greatly enhanced by their peers’ contributions. The best institutes competitively select the best students, and learning at these top 100 is clearly enhanced by the quality of classroom discussions.
70 per cent of students polled felt that the institutes they were at did not provide value for money. The top 100 institutes in our rankings list are the most expensive to study in the world. With the economic crisis affecting most of the West and fluctuations in the Asian markets, it has become more difficult for gradates to find jobs. The institutes need to work harder to build up their career services and internship opportunities for students.

W
e sent survey links to 1900 institutes and provided them with unique codes so that they could submit their responses online. Institutes were also provided links to online surveys where their current students were asked to rate specific statements that pertained to the factors considered in this ranking. Institutes also sent separate survey links to their recruiters who in turn rated the institute’s career management cell as well as student employability. Over 9000 additional recruiters were sent emails with a survey link. The recruiter list was prepared from the responses of the institutes and also included internationally well-known recruiters.
CAREERS, RECRUITMENT AND INDUSTRY VIABILITY OF STUDENTS – 55% This category significantly impacts the overall score of an institute since it is the most weighted factor. One of the most important criterions to select institutes is the student’s industry viability after graduation. Recruiters were asked to list and rate the institutes that they were most likely to recruit from. They were asked the likelihood of recruiting again from the same institute and their satisfaction with the institute’s career cell. Recruiters rated students on various factors including analytical and problem solving skills, leadership potential, communication and interpersonal skills and so on. Institutes and students were also asked about the availability and functioning of a career service cell on campus and how active such a service was. We also considered what percentage of students were actually placed, both domestically and internationally, through the institute’s career service cell. Students reported the availability and ease of obtaining internships.
DIVERSITY AND INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK – 10% This category looks not only at diversity of faculty but also at diversity of students in class. The international outlook includes international students that are attracted and retained by the institute. Institutes were asked to report the total number of
students on campus and what percentage of the students were international and speak two or more languages. Gender diversity of the students was considered. Institutes also reported the percentage of the faculty that was international, holds a doctorate degree and accredited with their own publishing material along with the gender diversity of the faculty. Students were asked to rate the student and faculty diversity in their class.
INNOVATION – 10% This category looks at the innovation used to construct and teach programmes and how faculty engage the students; an important factor in the overall perception of an institute. We considered the different ways in which an institute constructs programmes. Institutes were asked to select from a list of different teaching methodologies that we considered innovative - some of these included company visits, dual or multiple majors and course collaborations between different departments at the institute. Our list was made after surveying students across different campuses worldwide. Students were asked to report how satisfied they are with faculty who use innovative ways to teach subjects.
CAMPUS, EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES – 15% This category considers the support students receive on campus and the availability of extracurricular activities. The exchange programmes offered by the institute and how actively students are encouraged to opt for such programmes was also considered. We asked the institutes to select the different types of assistance provided by the student office or a similar body on campus. Our initial list was selected after surveying students across different campuses worldwide. Students reported if they were encouraged by the institute to participate in different extracurricular activities on campus. Institutes were asked to report the percentage of students that opted for exchange programs. We also considered the exchange students present on the institute’s campus.

TOTAL
MONEY, STUDENT SATISFACTION – 10% This category takes into account a critical part of college education today – finances. And more importantly, how satisfied a student is with the institute. We considered students’ opinions on whether a particular institute was perceived as ‘value for money’. We also asked institutes to state the percentage of students who received some sort of funding from the institutes. Students were asked to rate their institutes on various factors including attitude of staff and professors, location, course content and so on and institutes were asked to report the graduation rate of students enrolled and what percentage of students transfer out of the institution.
If we found discrepancies in the satisfaction scores and the subjective descriptions, we omitted the data. This happened in the case of 5 institutes.
MISSING DATA In a few rare occasions, some institutes did not supply data for all the questions in the survey. When data was missing which affected factors which were low-weighted such as value for money or campus support, we entered an estimate between the average and the lowest value reported by the institute. By following such a practice we did not excessively penalise an institution with a ‘zero’ for data that it could not provide. At the same time, the institute was not rewarded.
SCORES
EXCLUSION OF INSTITUTES
We calculated the standard deviation and standard scores (Z scores) so that we could combine and analyse the data with more accuracy and reliability. Below is a summary of the factors and the weightage given to each factor when we ranked the institutes. Each factor was made up of a set of questions. The total percentage attributed to that factor was based on the average score of the responses multiplied by the assigned weightage. The total scores were then sorted from highest to lowest. The institute with the highest score was ranked first.
We required that at least 20% of the class size (of any specific institute) answer the student survey. Hence, some institutes were disqualified from our ranking because of rack of responses to the student survey.
NOT JUST NUMBERS After we calculated the total computed scores for the institutes, we subjectively analyzed the data provided by the institutes, current students, and recruiters.
46 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
INSTITUTES THAT DID NOT FILL OUT THE SURVEY REPORTS IN TIME Out of 1900 institutes that were contacted, 16% of the institutes did not complete the survey on time or did not respond. We used publicly available information on some of these institutes to include them in our ranking. We also contacted current students and recruiters of these institutes and compared the data we received with the data from institutes that participated in our survey. yi

DIETITIAN IN USA I completed post graduation in food, nutrition and dietetics (MSc) in India and wish to be qualified to practice in the US. What should I do? Would a master’s degree in the US meet the requirements to become a registered dietitian? Anindita You could have your academic degree validated as equivalent to the bachelor’s or master’s degree awarded by a US regionally accredited college or university by a non-profit agency (e.g. IERF, WES, etc.) that performs this specialized service. If your master’s degree programme is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) then it would help you to chart out the path to becoming a registered dietitian. ACEND-accredited programmes with a list of advanced degree programs can be viewed on http://www.eatrightacend.org/
STUDY ABROAD
Cardiff University, University of Leicester, University of Glasgow, Warwick University, University of Chester, University of Birmingham and University of Salford, Manchester are among the universities offering postgraduate programmes in diabetology and allied fields in the UK (not an exhaustive listing). Relevant experience in diabetics following registration as a healthcare professional may be required for admission to some of the programmes, while in some admission to MSc may be via a postgraduate diploma course in diabetology.
ANSWER ANSWER
Sports Physiotherapists treat athletes with sports injuries. They identify the injury, devise a programme to improve the movement and function of the injured area and also advice on how to avoid injury. Follow up a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy with a master’s degree in sports physiotherapy and get sports-related work experience alongside more experienced therapists to develop expertise and confidence to treat sports injuries. Work opportunities could be in private practice, in health and fitness clubs, leisure centres, sport associations, sports clubs or you could become self-employed and combine a sports team, with a more general physiotherapy position in a hospital or teach at a university.
DIABETOLOGY I am interested in postgraduate studies in diabetology in the UK. Please suggest a few universities where postgraduate degree/ diploma courses are offered. Prakash Nair

Cartoons Through The Ages
ENTERTAINMENT FEATURE
Cartoons have existed since forever, and have always been a major part of our childhoods. Madhura Sansare goes through the pages of history to bring you the crux of cartooning, and how its evolution represents our evolution as a society at large
I
f you’re a 90’s kid, we’re sure you keep talking about how the cartoons of today are so different from the cartoons of your childhood, and how they used to be so much better. We have a strong suspicion every generation secretly feels the same thing; the 90’s kids just have a louder voice on the situation because of the rise of social media. Cartoons have most definitely gone through their own form of evolution. Just like the human race, our art forms have also evolved along with us. Art forms like fashion, design, fine art, graffiti, can all be denoted as representations of society in their own eras. Cartoons are no different. In a time where cartooning is slowly being considered a lost art, we delve into the depths of history, and base a timeline on what cartoons used to be, and what they have become. So come along and take a ride with us through the evolution of cartoons, and cartooning as an art form.
50 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
It just takes a look at the past century to reveal the evolution of our cultural consciousness. The masses’ attitudes regarding sex, violence, and even each other have gone through a tremendous change, and our cartoons have documented all of it. From being a people divided by cultural norms and fragmented categories like race, gender and sexuality, we have finally reached a place of oneness. Well, almost. And the only way to precisely understand this change is to go through cartoon history decade by decade. But before we do that, we need to define cartoons for what they are.
A cartoon can be described as a form of twodimensional illustrated visual art. But this definition has changed over time. Currently represented as nonrealistic or semi-realistic drawings or paintings intended for satire, caricature or humour, cartoons are now meant for so much more than just entertainment. Today, they can be used to have a voice, a voice that is sometimes so controversial and offensive to a certain sect of people that a Charlie Hebdo situation can occur because of it. But before we get into the intricacies of cartoons today, let’s take a step back into history’s proclamations of this art form. Let us start off with the cartoons with the 1920s, the decade of the revolution. One of the most popular cartoons of the era was the happy-go-lucky cat, Felix. Created in the Roaring Twenties, the time period between World War 1 and the Great Depression that gave rise to jazz and Prohibition, the surrealistic Felix The Cat series played before the silent motion pictures in movie theatres. He was a big favourite for dealing with the prevalent issues of the day, like prohibition and alcoholism while also drawing open the curtain on the established ethnic stereotypes. It was during the silent era of the 1920 that Charles Mintz, Walt Disney’s cartoon distributor asked him to create a cartoon that would rival Felix. All of this was before the birth of the legendary Mickey Mouse. Disney first came up with a mischievous black and white character called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who was known for his straight, long ears. Disney and his artist employee Ubbe Iwerks made 26 Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons till 1927, before realising that Disney’s distributor, Mintz had stolen the character from him by copyrighting it under Mintz’s name. Heartbroken and on his way back from California with this sad news, Disney came up with a black and white mouse character with big round ears and a long skinny tail. Though Disney had first named this character Mortimer Mouse, he changed it to Mickey Mouse on the suggestion of his wife, Lillian. Mickey Mouse premiered in Steamboat Willie, the world’s first sound cartoon, at the Colony Theatre in New York on November 18, 1928. The seven minute long film received rave reviews, with the audiences adoring Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie Mouse, who also made her first appearance in the short film. It is for this reason that November 18, 1928 is considered Mickey Mouse’s official birthday. Moving on to the 1930s, January 13th first saw a Mickey Mouse comic strip appear in nationwide newspapers. Other cartoons like Popeye were portrayed much differently than the incarnations we are used to as well. Due to the frustration that came along with the Great Depression, the 1930s Popeye was rougher around the edges, more likened to a cursing sailor who threw punches at people, animals and objects for no reason.
The 1940s were all about America’s entry into the World War 2. This led to the birth of more patriotically costumed superheroes like Wonder Woman and Captain America, who were both created in 1941. The 1940s were majorly significant because of Wonder Woman, who was one of the first female superheroes in the country. This was massively due to the fact that women were continuing to expand their roles in the workplace, and also because World War 2 was the first conflict in which women served in the military. As gender inequalities were finally being addressed by the cartoons of the time, racial inequalities were bought to the white audiences’ attention by cartoonists like Dr. Seuss. Though there was an attempt by a few cartoonists to eradicate racial inequalities, some cartoons tended to the opposite demographic. Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs by Censored Eleven is one of the major examples of the racist cartoons of this age. The 1950s saw a radical change not just in the cartoons of the time, but also society at large. Following the soldiers’ return from the war in 1945, a redefining of gender roles took place. All the hard work of the 1940s was diminished as the 1950s cartoons started showing gender disparity and a return to women being showcased as accessories to men once again. But the downfall of the 1950s was temporary. Come 1960s, the Flintstones came to our screens, and they were very responsible for a radical change. The Flintstones was actually the first cartoon ever to show members of the opposite sex sleeping in the same bed. The 1960’s also saw the Jetsons, who were way ahead in their time by pointing to environmental pollution, but had the family dynamics of a 1960s family. Scooby Doo also entered the cartoon scene by 1969, created by Hanna-Barbera as a peaceful alternative to the violent cartoons that were being protested against by the parents. We have come a long way from then, with the 1970s showcasing the effects of the Civil Rights Movement by being a mixed race group that showcased overt sexuality, to the wide variety of cartoons available in the 1980s; trigger-happy cartoons like G.I Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and feel-good, community-focused cartoons like the Smurfs, Muppet Babies and Strawberry Shortcake coming together in the same decade. Since the 1980’s, cartoons have changed drastically, but they are still representative of a society’s trials and tribulations in some way or another. Political cartoons and comic strips have existed through the ages, but even our everyday cartoons have a lot to say about who were are as a society, and where we stand. The evolution of cartoons has been a magnificent one, and while we’re proud of it, we are just as proud of what this evolution represents, which is the evolution of the human society. yi

Of Careers And Cartoons Being a freelance cartoonist for almost 15 years now, Balraj KN has contributed cartoons to major publications like The Times Of India, Bangalore Mirror, Midday and Deccan Herald among many others. He tells us more about what it takes to be a cartoonist today
52 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
WHAT AREAS DO YOU TEND TO FOCUS ON, THAT MAKE YOUR CARTOONS AND COMIC STRIPS DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER CARTOONISTS OUT THERE? The cartoons I create can get uniquely visual as well as verbal. My interest in exploring visual variety in communication often tends to move away from using just human figures and a punch line. The advantage is that they stand out from the rest, but also at times tend to get cerebral, in effect reducing the wideness of my audience. WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS WITH INDIAN CARTOONING THAT HAMPER ITS QUALITY AND DEVELOPMENT? Cartooning as a term includes many practitioners in India, like editorial cartoonists, comic illustrators and graphic novelists. As an illustrator, there are multiple other applications to cater across industries for an individual. Cartooning is like the pickle and not the main course on the menu. People need cartoons once in a while to spice things up. Hence there is a lack in the encouragement or eagerness of aspirants in pursuing a career in cartooning. An average young Indian who looks for security in his future career is averse to the risk and struggle of such an
offbeat path. Societal perception of a ‘struggling artist’ too does a great disservice to the profession. Only those with a fire in their belly, who are brave enough to choose the line and fight against all the odds, tend to pursue it as a full-time career. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANY IMPACT OF CARTOONING? DO YOU THINK CARTOONS CAN BRING ANY SOCIAL CHANGE? We need cartoons like we need music in our lives. Not listening to music for a day or two will not kill us but you can never imagine a world without music; it is absolutely essential. Cartoons can entertain, tickle, educate, inform, pique your brain, make you think, change your mind, affirm your belief or simply help you make your point. Cartoons have always had a social impact often in unknowing ways, just like music. If you think Asim Trivedi getting arrested on sedition charges for his cartoons is social change, I would say that cartooning making it to the front page, just like our sportsmen’s Olympic win makes it the front page. WHAT’S THE FUTURE OF INDIAN CARTOONING; WILL THE UPCOMING TRENDS LIKE ELECTRONIC MEDIA INFLUENCE IT? Internet and social media is where cartooning is seeing its rebirth in full glory. As internet penetration increases in the coming years, cartoonists will be connected with a wider audience that was once achieved by newspapers, print publications and books. Facebook, Twitter and other social networks also help cartoonists get a live interaction with their audiences. yi
Journalism Through Cartoons Recently featured as one of the top 24 India-based intellectuals by Forbes India, Satish Acharya has definitely taken strides in his career as a cartoonist. We talk to this MBA-turned cartoonist about the role of cartoons in journalism
WHAT COMPELLED YOU TO CARTOONING WHEN YOU STARTED OUT? WHICH WERE THE COMICS THAT YOU READ AS A KID AND WHICH WERE YOUR FAVOURITES? It began with Amar Chitra Katha. As a school-going kid the illustrated story books of Amar Chitra Katha attracted me. I felt the power of illustrations to tell a story is amazing. Later the cartoons of Laxman, Mario that used to appear in The Illustrated Weekly of India fascinated me and helped me take keen interest in cartoons. Though I hardly understood the message/opinion in those cartoons then, it was clear that I wanted to draw cartoons because it gave me
happy moments. YOU WERE FEATURED AS ONE OF THE TOP 24 INDIA BASED INTELLECTUALS NAMED BY FORBES INDIA IN DECEMBER 2015. COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE MORE OF HOW THIS CAME TO BE? To be frank, I’m not sure how I landed up in that list. I have just been drawing cartoons and trying to reach as many people as possible. And social media has been a great help as a platform in this process. I guess, during the Anna’s anticorruption movement and the General Elections (where corruption was a decisive issue) my cartoons travelled a lot and reached Indians
abroad as well. That reach formed the basis for Forbes pick, I presume. WHAT AREAS DO YOU TEND TO FOCUS ON, THAT MAKE YOUR CARTOONS AND COMIC STRIPS DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER CARTOONISTS OUT THERE? My focus is always on doing justice to the space that my cartoon occupies and doing justice to the time a reader spends on my cartoon. Also for me as a cartoonist, being unbiased is the primary goal. I try to be as unbiased as possible. 'Without fear or favour' is my mantra. Also, since I contribute most of my cartoons to news portals, I can comment on any trending topic more quickly through a cartoon. And I’m also passionate about cricket and cinema, so that helps me widen my cartooning area. WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS WITH INDIAN CARTOONING THAT HAMPER ITS QUALITY AND DEVELOPMENT? Editorial cartoonists work with
tremendous job insecurity. There are chances that one of your cartoons doesn’t go well with the ideology of the paper or editor. On the chance that the publication suddenly decides to cut cost, cartoonists are always the sacrificial lambs. Media houses should consider editorial cartoons as a serious part of journalism. The cartoonist’s opinion might differ from editor’s opinion, but he’s also a journalist and his opinion should be respected. They should put in more sincere efforts to identify, groom and safeguard cartoonists. There’s hardly any award for cartoonists organised by any media house. That’s sad. yi

ICC Twenty20 World Cup
Fiesta
Cricket isn’t just s sport in India; it’s a religion. With India being the host for the ever-exciting ICC Twenty20 World Cup for the first time, 2016 is all set to be a thrilling year for the cricket fanatics
O
ne of the biggest cricket sensations to hit cricket in the last decade, Twenty20 has taken over the world, and people’s hearts in a very short span of time. Ever since India’s historic win against Australia in the first edition of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, we have remained hopeful for yet another spectacular win. In a country where cricket is likened to religion, the level of preparation and excitement is the country is no surprise. What is the Twenty20 World Cup? In order to know more about the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, you first need to know about what Twenty20 cricket is in the first place. Twenty20 cricket, often abbreviated to T20, is a short form of cricket. It was originally introduced at the professional level by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003, for an inter-country competition between England and Wales. A Twenty20 game consists of two teams playing a single inning each, which is restricted to a maximum of 20 overs. A typical Twenty20 game is completed in three hours, with two 75-90 minute
56 YOUTHINCMAG.COM FEBRUARY 2016
innings, one by each team, and a 10-20 minute interval. Being much shorter than the previouslyexisting forms of cricket, as well as being closer to the time span of other popular team sports, Twenty20 cricket gained fast approval from the spectators and cricket-lovers. The ICC Twenty20 World Cup is the international championship of Twenty20 cricket. The World Cup is organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), and currently comprises of a tournament between 16 international teams. It is generally held every two years, but there is a scheduled 4-year gap between the next two tournaments, 2016 in Indian and 2020 in Australia. History At the inception of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, it was decided that the tournament would take place every two years, barring the possibility of a Cricket World Cup being scheduled in the same year, in which case the Twenty20 World Cup would be held a year earlier. The inaugural tournament was held in 2007 in South Africa. No Indian can ever forget India’s spectacular win against Pakistan at the event. The two associate teams that had played in the tournament were selected through the 2007 ICC World Cricket League Division One, which was a 50-over competition. December 2007 saw the decision to hold a qualifying tournament with a 20-over format to better prepare the teams for this fast-paced form of cricket. Two out of six participants would qualify for the 2009 World Twenty20 and would receive $250,000 (almost Rs. 1.7 crore) in prize money. Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in England in the second version of the tournament in 2009. The next tournament took place only a year later in 2010, which was won by England, who battled against Australia and emerged victorious in West Indies. The 2012 ICC World Twenty20 was won by the West-Indies, by defeating Sri Lanka at the finals. This was the first time that a host nation, as the 2012 finals took place in Sri Lanka itself, competed in the final of the ICC World Twenty20. It was also the first time the T20 World Cup tournament took place in an Asian country. 2014 saw a win by Sri Lanka in the host city of Bangladesh, with India coming up as the runners up.
The Current Scenario Today, as we await with bated breath for the advent of the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup, we also await its arrival in India for the first time. Playing host to the event has everybody from the organisers to mere spectators like you and us very excited. ICC Chairman Mr Shashank Manohar, who attended the launch ceremony in Mumbai, said: “India is a country where cricket is a religion and not many places can match the passion for the game like India. I am fully confident that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will deliver an outstanding world cricket event, just like the ICC Cricket World Cups in 1987, 1996 and 2011.The ICC and BCCI are fully committed and will work together to make this a memorable event. I invite fans from across the world to witness fast-paced cricketing action on the field and enjoy the hospitality and culture of India, off it.” BCCI also seems to have gotten their game on point. BCCI Secretary Mr Anurag Thakur said: “We, as hosts, are fully prepared to organise one of the most entertaining spectacles in world cricket. We draw experience from hosting three ICC Cricket World Cups and are ready to make the ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 one of the most memorable events. Our preparations are in full swing, and BCCI and ICC is working together to make it a lifetime experience for the players and the fans. India is a vibrant country – young, full of colour, energy and exuberance - and is very much like the concept of Twenty20 cricket itself. We would encourage everyone involved with the game to experience the best of India.” What should you look out for? According to Vishaal Loganathan, News Head at Cricbuzz, international players like AB de Villiers, Ravichandran Ashwin, Glenn Maxwell, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and Kane Williamson should be on our list of players to look out for. “The spinners will definitely play a big role in the tournament, and thus, batsmen who can counter their threat will be the most vital
for their respective teams. With the relatively small grounds in India, batsmen who pack a punch, the likes of Chris Gayle, David Warner and Martin Guptill, will be keen on making the most of a hard new ball and fresh conditions. In the pace bowling depratment, Mohd Amir's return to the Pakistan team holds a lot of promise, while Lasith Malinga, Josh Hazlewood and Mustafizur will look to add to their stature in international cricket, he says. The Competition: We are playing on home ground this time, but that does not eliminate the competition. So who do we focus upon as competition? “Africa and Australia have never won the tourney before, and they will be keen on opening their tally. Pakistan and Sri Lanka, like they have shown previously, can never be ruled out. England is showing a lot of promise this time around. But my pick would be New Zealand, despite them missing Brendon McCullum, to spring another big surprise,” says Loganathan. The Indian Team: According to the specialists, the Men in Blue’s strengths lie primarily in the duo, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. Virat Kohli is known for his aggressive play, and we are looking forward to his innings this time. Suresh Raina had also managed to impress the critics in 2015’s IDD Cricket World Cup, by saving the entire team from a defeat. Loganathan says, “Batting has always been India's biggest strength, and hence, Virat Kohli's name will naturally appear atop the list. Ashwin has turned himself into one of India's biggest match-winners over the past year, and he should revel in familiar conditions. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah add a lot of value to the team despite their relative inexperience, and their performance will go a long way in paving the way for India in March.” yi

DISRUPTING TECH - By Manil S. Dodani Disruptive technology on its own is a very obscure concept. Let us walk you through the intricacies of what disruptive technology is all about
R
emember that week when Netflix announced that it’d be finally entering India? The online binge watching community welcomed it with a resounding YES (you couldn’t hear them because they said it at home). Such is the power of a corporation that started out by renting out DVD’s by post and is now the global leader in streaming television. Netflix has over 75 million subscribers today who spent a total of 42.5 billion hours streaming television in 2015. Netflix is a classic example of what is defined today as ‘disruptive innovation’. The term disruptive innovation was coined by a Harvard professor, Clayton Christensen. In simple terms, when a firm innovates disruptively it allows a new population of consumers to access a product or service that was previously only available to consumers with either lots of money or lots of skill. To illustrate, a personal computer is a disruptive innovation because it handed computing power to regular customers; ones who couldn’t afford a mini or mainframe computer that was as big as a condo once upon a time. Cellular phones disrupted fixed landline phones to create a whole new industry (and an addiction disorder) for themselves – now that’s what we call disruptive. Disruptive innovation has primarily been witnessed in the technology sector since these innovations set benchmarks for other industries to follow or adapt to. What makes Netflix so chill is its insatiable desire to make customers addicted to the convenience it offers, the convenience of having great multimedia content in front of your eyes,
for a fraction of the price of real cable television. Netflix in its growth displaced a very popular rental store called Blockbuster that enjoyed 1.62 billion dollars of market cap. In essence, Netflix disrupted the way we consume digital media content, forever. But hey, that’s a lot of global out there; the Indian industry isn’t far behind at showing the world how things are to be done either. Know that dingy little vehicle you’ve seen zipping in your city a few times? The one with the engine at the back? The one without the AC? No, not the three wheeled one, that’s what we call a rickshaw. I’m talking about the Tata Nano. The infamous ‘common man’s car’ that retailed at slightly more than a lakh, has been touted to be an industry disruptor (not because it shook up a few politicians here and there) that forced those honchos who make fancy wheels to sit up and take notice. The world’s cheapest car uses plastic instead of metal, reduces performance to focus on a low cost design and cuts out all those frills that keep a car out of reach for an average working Indian. In this case, Tata didn’t target car owners to buy the Nano, instead they urged two-wheeler owners to trade in for a brand new car and harnessed this want of a certain upgrade in lifestyle to make the Nano a success. Although the reception for the Nano was lukewarm, it simply can’t be written off as a failed innovation just as yet. Why? By April 2011 the Nano had sold 10000+ units and grabbed a double digit market share. It continues to grow even today. Disrupt today for a better tomorrow. yi

Relationships
The Ye Ole Dating Game Looking back or looking forward, there are certain types of people you are sure to have a romantic inclination to at some point in time. Pearl Mathias brings you some easy, some hard to forget people you will date in your 20's THE ONE WHO’S GOT IT ALL I’m talking about the hottest person in the squad. The one’s who look like they’ve got it all. The perfect hair, shoes, clothes and attitude as well. They’re loved by everyone and those who don’t like them, secretly want to be them. You can’t help but fall for them, even if it’s for a really brief period of time. They’re cute, charming and extremely bad for your heart and mind; because rarely does anything fruitful come out of such a crush, or if your lucky, relationship. However, they’ll be fun to hang around, you’ll be introduced to some really fun friends of theirs and you might even get to attend the cool parties. There’s one in a hundred chance that there’s a future with this kind of person, so they won’t really go beyond your college years. But in class, they’ll be all you think about and you’ll catch yourself dreaming being alongside them in multiple scenarios. What you need to know is that this person is mere eye candy. They’re the ones who have the innate capability of making you smile with just a moving glance. On some really crappy days, that is all you’ll need. Even though this may not culminate in a relationship, there’s a high chance you’ve already dreamed out a superficial future with this hottie.
THE ONE WHO’S GOOD ON PAPER They’re smart, they’re funny, they’re ambitious; in short, they’re everything you would want someone to be. They can crack you up in an instant and in your heart of hearts you know that it can’t get any better than this. Yet, there will be this nagging feeling at the back of your mind indicating that something is amiss. What could be wrong with something so right, you ask. Well nothing really, apart from your underlying instinct signaling you that something better lies ahead. Although there’s no harm in enjoying this relationship while it lasts, you might feel a tad bit bad about leading them on. These relationships often start off well and are long lived. You really get to know each other and you love every moment with them. The feeling of ‘it can’t get better than this’ is common in such a scenario. You might also end up getting overly attached and that’s alright because these kind of people will never let you down. You can also count on them to never hurt or betray you; they’re few but they’re true. You will often end up being friends with this person even after you’ll have gone your separate ways.
62 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
THE ONE WHO’S TOTALLY WRONG FOR YOU You know they’re bad for you, but it only makes you want them more. They’re seldom available for you, they make you chase after them; they’re stubborn, needy and pretty much a narcissist. All your friends will warn you about them, but nothing will deter your feelings for this one. You will sit up nights on end crying about what they’ve done, but come morning and you go running back into their arms. You can’t figure out what it is about them that makes you want them so bad; is it a certain charisma they exude or you just like the way they treat you. Their pattern of come and go may appeal to some while others get hooked onto it. But whatever it is they’re upto, we’re ever willing to take them back despite it all. It’s the one relationship where you bare it all only to realize later how naïve you were. Anyway, you will suffer inevitable heartbreak but get over it eventually in good time.
THE ONE WHO ISN’T OVER THEIR EX We all know that one person who just cannot seem to move on completely. They’re so fixed on their past that they easily overlook what’s in front of them; even if it’s the best thing to ever happen to them. They’re the ignorant type and if you’ve been with them, I’m just glad you’re done with it. Sure we want to know about our partner’s ex and how things went down. But you definitely cannot (should not) bear listening to someone you like talk about someone they like. The sad part about this relationship is that there is actually a chance to make this work, however they just don’t seem to get it. You try so hard to replace that ex but it’s all in vain. You just can’t get over the fact that they can’t get over someone. This kind of relationship is totally worthless and you will realize earlier on that it’s going nowhere. You will still keep going at it with all you’ve got and when you’re exhausted, you will be left fanning their ego.
THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY Then there’s this one person with whom everything seems so good and real at the same, you can hardly believe it’s true. So much so that you’ll may not end up dating just so that things remain uncomplicated. They could be your best friend, your soul mate even, but neither of you’ll will dare to take it a step further lest you’ll lose this special something. You won’t think about them all the time, but your mind will wander over to them when you’re in the middle of a beautiful day and something quirky strikes you. You won’t want to tell them about the happenings of the day, but they are your 2 a.m. buddy. Nothing serious ever turned out for you’ll but they’re here to stay. More often than not, you’ll won’t be in touch anymore but you’ll wonder what they’re doing in a random moment in time. You’ll always, always be clueless about why it didn’t work out and how would it have evolved even if it did. Although things do turn out for the better for both of you’ll, this relationship will be etched as a question in your mind for a while.

The G-Spot HEALTH
Supplement
Yourself With your current diets and schedules, getting all the required vitamins and minerals is a difficult process. Jay Mehta tells us how essential it is to start taking supplements from an early age

L
ife’s moving very fast and so are we. Work stress, irregular diet, regular junk food, and irregular vegetables and fruits consumption, preservative rich foods, irate dieting, forgotten exercise schedules, etc are all creating a big gap in everybody’s lifestyle, thus advancing and accelerating diseases early. Indeed, there is a disruption happening in everyone’s lifestyle with rise of imbalance of high impending stress levels and ebbing nutrition levels, culminating to invisible health problems. There are television ads telling you ‘Jiyo Jee Bhar Ke’. There are ‘hot yoga practice videos’ launched every week to keep you healthy. But the real issue is that in our daily lifestyle we are missing some very important constituents which are the real fuel for the body. Looking at the current lifestyle of any urban citizen, it’s obvious that deficiencies in one’s body exist. Looking at the multiple factors involved in a typical urban lifestyle, the need for a substitute for organic food is essential. Prevention is better than cure, is the mantra for today’s young workforce. It’s the new uber cool thing happening to consume products which assure you a life that gives you a freedom to enjoy and lead a productive and vigorous lifestyle. To prevent before health is ruined is the clear principle which has been taken up seriously by most. The focus now is to increase the quality of life and essentially living a healthier lifestyle. More and more people have started resorting to multivitamin supplements. The nutrients missed need to be earned and regained. To refill this lost wealth of nutrients, most doctors prescribe multivitamin supplements. There is a big catch in the menace of health supplement consumption as no tangible metrics exist to map the right deficiency of the nutrients. Somewhere the message is clear that consuming vitamins and minerals in today’s time needs to be started at a young age. The human body requires such supplementation on a daily basis to keep one healthy and functioning at the highest possible level. Before the start of any vitamin or health supplement consumption, the right question to be asked is what
the actual deficiency is and what is required. Doctors also need to create emphasis on trying to understand what kind of health supplement treatment should be considered for different set of people. A normal doctor’s prescription for multivitamins or health supplements is more of a carpet strategy, where one size fits all approach is considered. Before preferring any brand or product claiming to be a health supplement, the first question is to ask the amount of vitamins and minerals it contains. An array of novel and innovative products flurrying in the markets, is evident of growing demand to stay healthy and fit. Numerous health supplements, vitamins and minerals have now thronged the chemists to cater to the deficiencies perceived. However the all-time questions permeate like which supplements are right for one, how much and why? The requirement of health supplements and vitamins change with age. It is given that the requirements of health supplements vary from individual to individual based on the body makeup, lifestyle and diet, nature of job, any underlying disease or deficiency and level of stress. So these factors stand out to be clear parameters in analyzing the requirement of vitamins and health supplements. The journey of making vitamins and health supplements your daily friend very first starts with a self-analysis of the key symptoms of your deficiencies. It mostly starts with one feeling tired easily or feeling weak often, or lacking enough stamina. What are the basic supplements one should take? However let us try to understand the basic categories of health supplements which can be consumed for a well maintained lifestyle. When it comes to calcium, women should start taking calcium supplements mostly after the age of 35. The key reason is that in a female’s body after the age of 35, generally bones start falling weak due to loss of calcium. Also post menopause, the condition adds to the problems of weak bones.
Antioxidants that are produced by the body as a defense are capable of handling daily life stress; however they are produced in small amounts and need to be supplemented externally. So it is certainly advisable to start the detox therapy of antioxidants at an early age of 25. Major antioxidants can be availed from vitamin C, Vitamin E, Green tea, etc. It is recommended to take as much as 1000 IU of vitamin D supplements per day in the fall and winter when sunlight exposure is limited and otherwise 400 IU of vitamin D daily, for adults aged 19 to 50. Getting your vitamin D (along with calcium) in your 20s will help boost your bone strength, and then maintain it once you enter your 30s and 40s. For women in their childbearing years, folic acid is also recommended if you’re planning on conceiving anytime soon. It is good to ensure pre-pregnancy high levels of folic acid because low rates of folic acid can cause a number of birth defects and recommended dose is 400 micrograms. Iron is another key consideration for menstruating women. The iron deficiency commonly occurs in pregnant women, causing anemia, which can result in fatigue and weakness. Young women should take about two capsules of fish oil containing Omega 3s. They protect against inflammation, which is at the heart of many chronic diseases, including heart disease and stroke, Omega 3 fatty acids are also a major component of our brain and nervous tissue and can be important for developing fetuses. Strict vegetarians may need extra B12 and folic acid supplements as well. B12 is present in eggs and dairy, so vegans should get this nutrient from supplements at a young age. Get insured early, prevent health problems early and enhance your quality of life. yi

POINT OF VIEW
of
Freedom Choice Why must one conform to the norms of society and ignore our personal feelings? Nisha JamVwal stresses about how it’s time we change our narrow minded views
66 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MARCH 2016
W
ith a country raging forward in the global scenario, I wonder how we hope to be recognized as an inclusive force if we wear blinkers about very real and tangible factions of our society. The relationship of a gay couple is indeed very genuine and tangible. I studied design at school in California, the home of free love and relationships. It is beautiful to see different manifestations of love, without apology or shame only to return to a country where gay marriage is a legal crime. I have close friends who have alternate preferences -gays and transgender and I know them to be good friends, sensitive, caring and decent in demeanor as anyone else and very very creative. Do you not feel they have a right to seek a life of caring, companionship and fulfillment just as much as all of us? I feel narrow minded concepts have had their day – relationships of love, sex and marriage are personal preferences and should be allowed a freedom of choice between two consenting adults. In India, the Supreme Court ruled Homosexuality as a criminal act (Sec 377) of the Indian Penal Code -the archaic 377 instituted by the British in 1861 – but this is against what India stands for. The bases of our nation’s founding principles are equality, justice and a fair life for everyone, regardless of sexuality, creed, and identity. Pluralism and liberalism was part of our civilization where diversity signified us as a people in India, long before equality was touted by philosophers. Primeval ideologies have no place in the modern world where gay relationships and marriage are accepted and championed. If we want to be a 'global power' we must legalize gay marriage at the start of 2016 and banish 377 dwarfing a liberal nation which had recognized and allowed gay relationships as is acknowledged by Indian Historians. Conservatism and dogmas are dwarfing our liberal nation with people like Baba Ramdev championing stunted thought and regressive hate mongering. By marginalizing gay relationships and making it unacceptable in society, the very practical issue is that they will anyway exist and do what they need to do to live but we will lose out on their contribution to our society. Significantly large sections condemned to degrees of depression, guilt, humiliation and subterfuge stunts society, where they may be an intelligent, productive contributing sector that find themselves unhappy misfits and outsiders. Worse still they may be struck with clinical, psychological or psychiatric conditions and lead tortured lonely lives. Moral policing has its place but it’s a broadminded world. I do believe that it must be a live and let live world. It’s alright for people to be inclined towards different partners to the majority norm and
l a w V m a J a h Ni s this is hardly reason enough to oppress and suppress their potential towards happy productive lives. Even the country suffers manpower loss due to the psychological and humiliating loss of productivity. Pursuit of happiness and freedom of choice when it does not infringe on the wellbeing of others is a right. And one cannot dictate relationship choices upon anyone but oneself. Without gay relationship coaching and help available to society, a gay individual has to often live his entire life without a companion, due to the social stigma and guilt piled upon him. It is rare for him to find fulfillment and love until he is able to shake away the limiting beliefs piled upon us by a misguided society that speaks of ‘preserving’ a misinterpreted past culture . Once again I refer to communication as being the most powerful tool in a relationship. To communicate and use the right body language to connect work in seeking and finding a fulfilling relationship, whether it is a male, female or same gender relationship. The most important path to follow with a same gender relationship is to be honest about it. The worst track is to marry the opposite sex to please one’s family when under pressure instead of going with one’s biological reality in order not to ruin one’s own and the other person’s life. yi

hair. It’s thus preferred to play Holi with organic and safer colours. Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, MD, ISAAC said: ‘'Holi is the time when the skin gets totally ripped off its natural oils and softness, owing to the chemicals contained in colours, so taking proper precaution is important.” This festival can sometimes wreak havoc on your skin and crowning glory, but all it takes to keep them safe and beautiful is a little care, both before and after Holi. Since taking care of your hair and skin during Holi is extremely vital, we put together a list of things to do for decent skin and hair care. POST HOLI Add two tablespoons of lemon juice to a bowl of curd and apply it on the coloured areas. Then, take a bath with normal or lukewarm water to take the colour off. Rinse your hair completely without using shampoo at first. Once the colours are removed, then you can wash them with a mild shampoo and conditioner. Use cold water to rinse the colour off as hot water only makes the colour stick to the roots. Take 1 tablespoon each of olive oil and coconut oil; mix 1 teaspoon each of castor oil, glycerine, vinegar, conditioner and your shampoo to it. Apply the mixture on your hair and the scalp and leave it on for an hour and then rinse it off.

Best of TV / Music / Movies / Books
We all need those motivational songs to get us through various phases of our lives. Fatema Kathawala compiles a list of women empowerment songs to show everyone out there who really runs the world
SUNO SUNO MERI AWAAZ
'Suno Suno Meri Aawaaz' is entirely based on women empowerment from the album 'Suno Suno Meri Aawaaz. The album is much more than just a collection of five musical tracks. It is a call for change, woven with the mesmerising thread of music and expressed vividly to touch the hearts of one and all. This album was composed by Anandmurti Gurumaa who belongs to a musical background as well. It portrays through the powerful form of music about what kind of role a girl plays in the society and all her responsibilities she carries out with ease.
A WOMAN’S WORTH
BEAUTIFUL
Beautiful is a song recorded by American singer Christina Aguilera on her fourth studio album, Stripped. Beautiful has been widely embraced as an anthem by the LGBT community for its message of self-empowerment and inner beauty. The song is widely recognized as one of Aguilera's signature songs and has been covered on numerous occasions and featured on several television shows. This song helps a girl to gain confidence and musically portrays the hassel’s that every teenage girl faces in her everyday life.
A Woman's Worth is a song by American singer–songwriter Alicia Keys. A piano-driven soul ballad, it was written by herself and musician Erika Rose and produced by Keys for her debut album, Songs in a Minor (2001). This song portrays women empowerment at its best, showing that a woman is worth a lot more than she thinks she is and sometimes self confidence is what takes her through all the difficulties of the world.
FIREWORK
Firework is a song by American singer Katy Perry from her third studio album, Teenage Dream (2010). With some noting its catchy melody and danceable beat and comparing it to songs by British band Coldplay, the song was commercially successful, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top five on 20 charts around the world. It makes all women around the world feel strong and beautiful as well as motivated. Beautifully portrayed by Katy Perry, it clearly shows that no matter what size, colour, race or caste a girl is beautiful in her own way.
RUN THE WORLD (GIRLS)
Run the World (Girls) is a song recorded by American recording artist Beyoncé, from her fourth studio album 4 (2011). The song's development was motivated by the fact that Beyoncé wanted something different, a mixture of different cultures and eras, a new sound and a message which would give women strength. Best of TV / Music / Movies / Books We all enjoyed Fight Club and Chaplin mocking the government in the Modern Times, but have you ever tried literature that made you laugh? Sonali Shelar brings you fascinating books based on satire
I AM A CAT
Originally written in Japanese by Natsume Sōseki, this book is a collection of views of an anthropomorphized, sarcastic feline which walks around observing behavior of the ‘well-bred’ people surviving the suffocating mix of Japanese and Western culture. The pompous and smart cat talks about human behavior, criticizing his owner’s institutional ideologies and the selfish nature of humans. The observation and wit is so fresh, you can totally relate it to today’s world.
THE GREAT INDIAN NOVEL
COMPANY
How often do you come across a work of fiction so relatable to real life that it leaves you awed? Whether you work in the corporate world or not, you should definitely read Company, if you enjoy subtle humour. It’s the story of Stephen Jones and his journey in a huge corporate company, and what happens behind the fancy names and classy presentation. Join Jones as he descends deeper into the irrational policies of the brands and unethical working of the corporate minds.
Imagine Mahabharata’s Dritarashta in the 20th century, fighting Gandhi’s fight in the Indian freedom struggle? How would all these characters fit into those times? Interesting, right? If you appreciate snarky political humour, this is the book for you. Tharoor cleverly blends the characters from mythology in the pre and post independence era of the Indian history to create a satirical riot.
THE DOGS OF LITTLEFIELD
Though not a complete satire based novel, the mystery of the curious dog killer and the reactions of the residents of the ‘best place to live in’ Littlefield will leave you thinking about the hypocrite words and fake smiles of the upper middle class. Enjoy exploring what actually happens behind the manicured lawns and discover the unease behind the good quality of life at Littlefield with Dr. Clarice Watkins. The book is a compelling study on human behavior, with the bonus of suspense.
NIGHTMARE ABBEY
Do judge this book by its cover, I mean the title; it’s so catchy, right? This 18th century book is even more interesting with its gothic satire of romanticism and philosophy, the trends of those times. Though the language is a bit heavy, this novella is worth the time and the effort. Some characters are said to be inspired by Peacock’s friends, which makes it more compelling.

THE UNITED SPORTS BAR & GRILL
THE KORNER HOUSE
CUISINE: Fast Food, Italian, Finger Food BITES AND BOOZE: We had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant on a Friday night. The first thing that caught our eye was the fabulous interiors, designed specifically for that perfect Sports Bar feel. We started off with a few mocktails and cocktails, with the Virgin Colada, the Red Wine Sangria bulb and the Orange Popping Boba, a whiskey and orange concoction with boba pearls being our favourites. The menu also has a section called Chucks, which is a must try. Their Khichiya Papad Masala and Channa Express will have you licking your fingers as you order for another round. We started our dinner with the Jerked Chicken with Yogurt Mayo, Butter Garlic Prawns and Teriyaki Chicken Skewers. All three starters were an absolute delight, with the perfect mix of spice and sweet. A Smoked Out Pasta with chicken and little bits of bacon and that coveted smoky aroma and a lipsmacking Ranch Burger with southern spices made up our main course. On an ending note, we have to give a special mention to Uncle Ronnie’s Vegetable Xacuti, a coconut-based curry served with rice. FAB OR DRAB: With the perfect sports bar vibe, The United Bar & Grill is an absolute delight. Head in on a weekend night for a fine mix of sports, delightful drinks, a gorgeous food menu with a wide variety of dishes and a thriving dance floor. CUISINE: European BITES AND BOOZE: When we entered the restaurant on a sunny Monday afternoon, the first thing I noticed was their classic interiors. The calm lighting and soothing music complimented the quaint, classic seating and peaceful ambiance. We started lunch with the not-so-usual-sweet Roasted Pumpkin Soup; made of mascarpone, chives and harissa, it was spicy, not too much, but just enough, accompanied by a delicious watermelon margarita. For appetizers we were served Lamb Sliders, Chicken BBQ Flat Bread and Salmon and Fish Cake. The Lamb Slider was made of the finest and leanest lamb meat. The Salmon and Fish Cake with white butter was so mouth watering that we ended up repeating our order. A mean, zesty orange margarita was served with Mushroom Risotto and finely oiled classic spaghetti. The Risotto, made of overnight soaked rice went nicely with the cocktails as well as the well garnished spaghetti. Then followed the most awaited dish of the afternoon, dessert. The milky Tres Leches which was well condensed, was buttery and had a nice spongy filling. Towards the end, the Lemon Panna cotta arrived and we couldn’t resist how lovely it tasted. JAL - PICK OF THE MONTH CUISINE: Awadhi, North Indian It was great catching up with celebrated artist and sculptor Rouble Nagi with her husband, Saahil Nagi and study abroad counsellor, Karan Gupta on a breezy Saturday night over dinner and drinks at this fabulous new restaurant in the city. The outside area has a casual look, which is why we chose to sit inside the lounge area, which has the feel of a cozy living room. Their head waiter, Raphael was very warm and welcoming. Unlike other places where you're given an extremely elaborate 20-page menus, Jal's menu is concise, and just two-sided, which makes our choices easier. We trusted Raphael to get us the best treats of the house, and we were truly delighted with his picks. We started with the Soya Bean Matar Shammi, Kumba Malai Tikka, Galouti Kebab, Jhinga Methi Malai and the Paneer Till Tikka over a lively discussion on the current political scenario. There was a great red wine to complement the dishes served to us. We were quite full with our first course itself. For our main course, we will recommend the Sarso wali Dahi Aloo, Dum ka Paneer and the Murge-Khaas, which is Jal's unique take on the common Butter Chicken. And no meal here would be complete without their lip-smacking Black Dal with steamed rice. To top it all off, we indulged in a Zafrani Firni and a sumptious Parde ka Halwa, which is a fusion dessert of Gajar ka Halwa inside a baked pie. Over a nice, long dinner, it was great exchanging notes on the rapdily changing education scenario in our country. Our guests being true-blooded Punjabis, they truly relished the exquisite array of North Indian cuisine and gave it a 5-star rating.
